Frequently, visitors and residents alike wish they could be in two places at the same time because there is so much to do in the Frederick area. Do you take in a theater production, or do you stand on the banks of a river in the moonlight and count the blinking fireflies?
Frederick is a welcoming place for the arts, including venues for music and theater, art galleries and an everincreasing offering of public art, from sculptures to murals on buildings. You may even see an artist with an easel and a fistful of brushes painting the breathtaking scenery.
Local parks are built around our natural wonders, including South and Catoctin mountains and the Potomac and Monocacy rivers. A section of the famed Appalachian Trail also runs through the county and we have a zoo.

More than 100 juried artists will be at the 30th Frederick Festival of the Arts on June 8 and 9 along Carroll Creek Park. DOWNTOWN FREDERICK ART TRAIL
Public art is embraced in Frederick, especially the creations of artist William Cochran with his Angels in the Architecture murals on buildings throughout Downtown and the Community Bridge on Carroll Creek. His style is lifelike trompe l’oeil (French for “fool the eye”). Yemi, another public art contributor, created portraits of noteworthy people in local history that are featured on the McCutcheon’s building, also near Carroll Creek. Public Art Trail, a walking tour of public art in Downtown Frederick, is hosted by Visit Frederick. The Middletown and Pleasant Valley area is the setting for professional artists and craftspeople who work from home studios to form the Valley Craft Network. For the past 41 years the group has hosted a Studio Tour, always held the weekend before Thanksgiving, to allow visitors to enjoy the scenery of back roads as well as experience the one-of-a-kind art being created.

The W.F. Moran Bladesmith & Artisan Academy, 4246 Old National Pike, Middletown, opened its doors several feet from the shop in which William Moran had for years created knife masterpieces that were owned worldwide. The state-of-the-art facility features a large forging hall as well as a classroom to teach a variety of blade smithing techniques and other types of artisan crafts, including leatherwork, silver inlay and woodworking. One of Frederick’s most ambitious public art projects, the Carroll Creek Kinetic Art Promenade, continues to grow with the installation and planned additions of more sculptures anchored in the creek that move about in the breeze.
Carroll Creek Kinetic Art Promenade was founded by Bernard Gouin on behalf of the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek in 2020. In spring of that year, the first three sculptures were installed, with more added each year. The project is a privately funded nonprofit organization and all sculptures are privately funded.

Frederick Book Arts Center Moves to a New Home

Book arts centers can be found around the country—places that facilitate the arts associated with books, whether it’s learning how to use a letterpress, metal engraving, photography, illustrations, book binding, papercut art and other facets. The Frederick center, a nonprofit, opened in 2018 and recently moved to the corner of Carroll and South streets as an anchor to the Carroll Street Creative District.

Numerous farms and orchards provide an opportunity for folks to pick-your-own, whether it’s strawberries in the spring, blueberries in summer, pumpkins and apples in the fall and finally in December when they can cut their own Christmas tree. Fall is an especially busy time of the year with an abundance of weekend festivals for families to enjoy hayrides, fire off pumpkins canons or wander through a corn maze. Getting up close to barnyard animals is also a fun experience for youngsters and adults as well.

The granddaddy of agricultural fun is the Great Frederick Fair, held in mid-September at the fairgrounds on East Patrick Street. Visitors can wander through barns filled with animals ranging from a sow with her new-born piglets, to llamas, goats and cattle. Chickens and other poultry can be found in their own building. The fair has a birthing center where calves are welcomed into the world and exhibit halls are filled with the largest pumpkins and perfect ears of field corn. It’s a wonderful way to see where our food originates.

Starting in Washington, D.C. and traveling through Frederick County to its ending in Cumberland, the Chesapeake and Ohio National Historical Park was established in 1961 as a national monument to preserve the remains of the canal and many of its original structures including lockhouses and aqueducts. The pathway hugs the Potomac River, encompassing 184.5 miles of beautiful, peaceful scenery.

PARK: FOR ALL SEASONS, ALL REASONS
A nonprofit community organization was formed in 1991 called “Friends of Baker Park,” a designation that might apply to thousands of residents and visitors that love and appreciate the 58-acre linear park bordered by 2nd and Bentz streets and Carroll Parkway. The park was created approximately 75 years ago and named for prominent resident Joseph Dill Baker who contributed money to the city to buy the land. After Baker’s death, a bell tower was built in his memory.
The park contains ball fields, a gazebo where weddings routinely are held, a band shell for concerts and plays, originally built in 1935 and replaced in the 1990s, a swimming pool and playgrounds, tennis courts, walking trails and Culler Lake, originally called Kidwiler Pond, The name changed to honor past Mayor Lloyd Culler and to mark upgrades to the body of water. Friends of Baker Park recently stepped in to make even more improvements to the lake, once again making it a highlight of the park.
No matter the time of year, Baker Park is filled with joggers, duck watchers, strollers and those enjoying a picnic in one of the many pavilions, Cross country skiers appreciate the park in winter and when July 4th rolls around everyone is looking up at the fireworks.

Baseball enthusiasts need not travel to Baltimore or Washington, D.C., to see plays on the diamond, not when we have the Frederick Keys, a minor league baseball team that has been here since 1989. The team plays at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Frederick Flying Cows, a professional basketball team, had its premier season in 2024, playing home games in the Hood College gymnasium, BB&T Arena. The season starts in March and runs through May, with league playoffs in June.
Frederick Skyline Club de Futbol, with Joel Ramirez as its founder and president, is a minor league soccer team with both a men’s and women’s team. Additionally, Ramirez has established a youth program. “Our money comes from sponsorships, donations and fundraisers,” he says. The program uses fields at county parks but expects to have a solid home either at a college or high school.

If ice hockey is your game, there are various leagues at Skate Frederick, 1288 Riverbend Way, Frederick, ranging from youth teams to adult leagues. Often, the sport is played by families and high schoolers have been known to continue the sport in college.
Swapping ice skates for wheels puts you into the world of Frederick Roller Derby, founded in 2021. In addition to in-house scrimmages, Frederick Roller Derby has a team that plays against other squads such as the Patuxent Roller Derby in Columbia and the Rocktown Rollers in Harrison, Va., among others.

Rye whiskey was recently named by the state of Maryland as the state spirit and Tenth Ward Distilling Company, 55 E. Patrick St., is doing its part with Maryland Rye Whiskey, created from rye grown and malted right here. CLUB FORMS ON APPRECIATION OF WINE
The president of the Frederick Wine Club, which formed in 2023, has a number of goals in mind, ranging from providing information about local vineyards and their products and events, to creating a community of friends and fellow wine aficionados who might in the future take trips to vineyards around the country and eventually branching out to the rest of the world.
Teresa Smith moved to Frederick several years ago, looking to become part of the community, when she landed on the idea of connecting through wine. “There is a social aspect to the club, where you can meet new people,” she says, as well as an educational component where, for example, you can learn what makes a malbec different from a merlot. Events are planned for members including visits to local vineyards, tastings and classes such as how to create a delicious charcuterie board to go with the wine you’re having.
Smith likes the idea of promoting small businesses, whether it’s a wine shop or a winery. “You may have a wine in a restaurant and later wonder where you can buy it,” she says, information the club may be able to provide. In her goal of bringing the community closer and promoting diversity, Smith says the club is also welcoming “to those who do not drink. They can take part with non-alcoholic options.” She is currently perfecting a buzz-free sangria for summer. www.frederickwineclub.com

REVIVING NATIVE HOP
In a feature written by J.D. Willoughby for the 2023 Homegrown Frederick, she notes that “before Prohibition, Frederick farmers provided about 20 percent of all the hops to Baltimore breweries. At the time, Cluster was a popular variety because it was cheap and fairly easy to grow. Many farmers got rid of their plants during Prohibition to make way for other crops. Today, very few Frederick farmers grow hops on a commercial scale, but the University of Maryland Extension hopes to change that with a hop unique to Maryland.

There’s no question our farmers produce the sweetest corn and most luscious tomatoes, but they also are filling their tables with some lesser known produce and other food items. Frederick’s History Has Deep And Compelling Roots
Frederick is older than the nation itself and was a vital part in the country’s story, including during the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War and important Civil War battles, with local churches turning worship spaces into hospitals for wounded soldiers.
Frederick received visits from historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Robert E. Lee, Winston Churchill, John Adams, and George Washington. With the creation of presidential retreat Camp David outside of Thurmont, modern day presidents have visited.
Some of history’s notable figures called Frederick their home—Francis Scott Key, author of The Star-Spangled Banner and fashion designer Claire McCardell are just two examples.

AARCH, an all-volunteer group, was formed in 2001 with a mission to inform the public about the contributions and history of local African Americans. Recently members received a gift from Frederick city of a 3,200 SF space on the street level of the East All Saints Street parking garage. First constructed circa 1848, the bridge
has been structurally modified and re-built. The bridge’s original timbers remain throughout the 90-foot-long structure that crosses Owens Creek and features a multiple Kingpost design. An adjoining park provides picnic tables and a play area.
RODDY ROAD COVERED BRIDGE

Built in 1856, the bridge rests where Roddy Creek Road meets Roddy Road at Owens Creek. The smallest of the county’s covered bridges, Roddy Road is a single-span Kingpost design bridge measuring 40 feet in length. Relax with a picnic or explore the natural beauty at this bridge and park.
UTICA MILLS COVERED BRIDGE

The bridge, circa 1850, originally spanned the nearby Monocacy River but was washed away during a severe storm in 1889. Local citizens gathered the remains and reconstructed the 101-foot-long Burr Arch design bridge at its present location at Fishing Creek.

WAR CORRESPONDENTS MEMORIAL ARCH
One mile west of Burkittsville in Gathland State Park, once the mountain retreat of Civil War journalist and novelist George Alfred Townsend, is the War Correspondents Memorial Arch. Unveiled in 1896, the monument stands 50 feet high and 40 feet wide and contains the names of journalists killed in action, both north and south. It was the world’s first such monument dedicated to members of the press.

Northern Frederick County is home to three historic covered bridges, all three listed on the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places. ‘WHERE THE DEAD COME OUT TO PLAY’
Take a journey through Frederick’s gruesome past—nearly 300 years of war, executions and revenge as part of Maryland’s oldest operating ghost tour. Mount Olivet Cemetery’s gates are generally open “by the dawn’s early light” and remain so until the “twilight’s last gleaming,” referring to the final resting place of Francis Scott Key who composed The Star-Spangled Banner. The cemetery is located at 515 S. Market St.

Enjoy the annual Candlelight Tour of Historic Houses of Worship during the holiday season in Downtown Frederick. This special open house celebrates Frederick’s tradition of religious diversity, local history and the holiday season. This is Frederick’s most popular church tour and is a great opportunity to step inside some of its most beautiful buildings.
Visitors can tour many of Frederick’s famous clustered spires and other historic houses of worship by candlelight. Guests will be welcomed with special programs, angelic choirs and nativity scenes. Education in Frederick County is shepherded by many hands, from teachers, administrators and support staff who keep students uppermost in mind, as well as parents and other volunteers who undertake many duties.
According to the latest enrollment figures, 45,220 students are attending classes through Frederick County Public Schools. FCPS has 29 preschools, 69 schools, including 43 elementary schools, 17 middle schools, 12 high schools, four public charter schools, a special education school, Flexible Evening High and a Career and Technology Center.

The student body at the schools served by Frederick County Public Schools is 52.6 percent White, 13.8 percent Black, 6.8 percent Asian or Asian/Pacific Islander, 20 percent Hispanic/Latino, 0.2 percent American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1 percent Native Hawaiian or another Pacific Islander. In addition, 6.5 percent of students are of two or more races, and 0 percent have not specified their race or ethnicity.
Also, 49 percent of students are female, and 51 percent of students are male.
At schools in Frederick County Public Schools, 20.3 percent of students are eligible to participate in the federal free and reduced-price meal program and 5.9 percent of students are English language learners.
Within Frederick County Public Schools, 96.6 percent of teachers are licensed, and 84.6 percent have three or more years of experience. The student-to-teacher ratio is higher than the state average, at 16:1. The district has 100 full-time counselors on staff.

The U.S. Department of Education each year recognizes schools that have achieved superior standards of academic performance.
