letter from your division news editor Hello hello Blue Devils! I’ve come to the revelation that I only have one more newsletter to create until my term is over! Time has flown like a bird (sorry, I’ll stop with the cringey similes). Since my term is almost over, I’ve put in my best work into these last newsletters to leave behind my best work. In this issue, you’ll find topics ranging from: - Getting to know your LTG-Elect Joyce Tong from Monte Vista - Guide to officer elections - Guide to officer election positions - Recap of February events (Conclave, club service events, trivia night) - A sneak peek into March events - Letters from myself (you’re reading it now!), your LTG, and LTG-elect - Updates to Devils’ Golden Cup standings - Monthly Recognition and so much more! Make sure to read through (or at least look at the photos! Our club editors have been doing an amazing job keeping track of the division’s accomplishments through visuals and articles) this issue to get more info on everything I’ve listed above. Thanks for reading, and I appreciate each and every one of you! Burning with service, Christine Oh D26S Division News Editor d26s.cnhkc.dne@gmail.com

Candidate Joyce Ton Maah
On the 23rd of January, we held the DCM plus the Concla tenant governors for the 2021 to 2022 term. I attended t intrigued by the Instagram post about the governors bein to stay for the whole thing. Now, the last time I had stayed extremely bored and anxious because I felt out of place, then hastily made me decide that I didn’t want to go to th when I tell you this was the most fun I had in a long time, I m see so many people sharing the same passion that I do fo all come together and chat even with distance learning and meeting new people, being a part of the elections fo ernor, and of course GETTING MEMBER OF THE MONTH!! It ing to see that I had received it among all the amazing b and I was extremely proud of myself. Overall, I absolute didn’t even notice time passing and I can’t wait to go to glad that I was able to help in the elections as well. By:

The first part of the event was the January DCM, where we went over the general old and new business. After that was concluded, we all played skribbl.io and conversed, which was very entertaining and amiable. It was nice to meet new people and get to know D26S as individuals, instead of the usual whole. Around 2:00pm our Conclave began, and I appreciated the detailed structure of the election along with the true passion shown from the candidates. Overall it was a fun event, and I look forward to experiencing Conclave in-person hopefully next year! By: Maahika Samudrala, Dublin

Hello Blue Devils! If you don't already know me, hello! In my experience serving as Monte Vista's Secretary, I have realized a joy in serving you. Now I want to give back to the community that accepted me with welcoming arms! By creating an atmosphere where everyone will share a special bond for each other and lean on each other in times of trouble, I want to serve you on my platform, LOVE. In this upcoming term, we'll stick true to our roots, not only as a service organization, but as a family and serve with love. Aside from Key Club, here are some things that I love: Thai milk tea, The Office, my dog (Toffee), Swedish Fish, Yakult, anything pineapple or strawberry scented/flavored, fresh snow, and laundry straight from the dryer! I'm a firm believer that I am not only leading you, but I am serving alongside you. I'm a pretty open book, and I'll tell you everything I can (as permitted, of course). Please know that I love you, I have faith in you, and I can't wait to hold you hand throughout your Key Club journey! Serving with LOVE, Joyce Tong Division 26 South Lieutenant Governor-Elect

Spotlight on Dublin K I did another Freerice event today and except this time, I was able to fully focus on just the event without having any other distractions around me. That made me feel really nice that I was able to answer questions and help the world so easily because even though I want to help the world, sometimes I do feel like it is a lot of work. This event simultaneously helped hungry people in need while also expanding my English vocabulary so I guess you could say the event was a win-win for me. I also loved the music and I was
jamming to it while I answered the questions. Although I did not get first place and I initially had trouble logging onto Freerice, in the end this event was very fun and rewarding to me. - Sanjana Vidhyacharan This event was the Smithsonian digital January, where we transcribed documents from the Smithsonian. Most of the documents were hard because they were written in cursive, so I mainly did the ones with numbers. The particular one I did was from Smithsonian Astro-

physics Center, transcribing a star's label, type, luminosity and others. This made me feel like a Key-Clubber, because I spent my time productively helping my community. - Arvin Andiappan This event made me feel good as a key-Clubber because it was my first hour of volunteering. It made me feel good for volunteering and spending my time usefully. This was the free rice event where we answered questions from various topics and gained rice for each question we got correct. This event took place on January 13, from 2 PM to 3 PM in the year 2021. - Arvin Andiappan The Freerice event was a success! We donated over 40,000 grains of rice and listened to some nice music. I was the DJ so I was able to pick the music for all of us to listen to! It was really
relaxing and very fun time - Richard Ch

The way that the goal of the competition was to compete each other in raising the most number of rice grains by answering simple questions was very fun to me. It made me feel good as a Key Clubber being able to help people on Earth with other Key Clubbers to donate rice. It was such a fun event, it helped me feel united with every other Key Clubber. - Seoyun Kim The Smithsonian DWS was a challenging event! We had to read a bunch of historical texts and they were very cool to look at but very hard to read. I tried transcribing the text but eventually moved to review other transcribers' work which was much easier for me. The event was super

fun and there were a lot of people that attended and overall I had a fun time. Also, the music was immaculate! Kudos to Caroline! - Richard Chung I participated in the January District Wide Service events by helping out the Smithsonian and it was nice to see people from the entire district. We transcribed historical documents and had to type them in a specific format. We could also review what other volunteers had transcribed instead of having to only write the documents. There were so many interesting documents including math calcu-
lations, interviews, letters, and diaries. - Ria Khatri I was able to attend the Smithsonian Digital DWS and the volunteering allowed me to view historical documents from a different perspective. It was difficult, yet fun how we were able to just listen to animal crossing music as we individually got to choose the project we wanted to work on. I liked the idea that many other key clubbers all joined together to contribute to transcribing history. Overall, I thought it was fun and interesting. - Victoria De Jesus

“Smartphones are one of the most ubiquitous features of our lives today. Many, including myself, can hardly imagine what a day (even more so, a day in lockdown) would look like without one. For me, lockdown has only exacerbated my reliance on technology like this to make use of all the extra time. While I’m sure it’s true that I’ve learned things from watching YouTube, or strengthened my relationships over text, it’s hard to ignore that heavy technology use does much to disconnect one from real life. It was for this reason that I decided to spend an entire day without using my phone or computer at all. Trying to make the most out of this experience, I printed out my homework assignments after school, and did my best to document how it went. The first thing that struck me was the total boredom. Not having my familiar source of entertainment, the first thing I did was finish my homework (likely much earlier than I would have done typically). Having exhausted my to-do list within an hour, I quickly realized how foreign to me developing my own entertainment had become. After a short bike ride, I was back in the same situation, unsure of what I should do. I decided to ask my mother if she needed anything and ended up getting groceries, doing the dishes, and cooking dinner. It was in the evening, after having gotten into bed, that I realized the genius in partnering Key Club with Pause For. While of course, I had earned money for charity by using the app, I realized that the more important charity had come directly from myself. In freeing myself from the time suck of my phone, I had been able to offer service to others, and more fully align myself with the Key Club spirit. In just one day, I already felt so much more connected to my family, and all I had sacrificed was idle entertainment. This is an experience I will surely be repeating in the future, and I strongly encourage anyone interested to go for it (just make sure you remember to start a new Pause session every hour)!”
aidan campbell “Freerice, one of the first Key club meetings at Monte Vista that I attended and actively participated in. The idea seemed really good, service hours for doing either Freerice or Math for UNICEF, while getting to socialize with other Key Club members. I wasn’t completely sure though as I didn’t know many people, but after my first meeting I realized that Key Club members were some of the most welcoming people to date. I was welcomed, not as the new guy, but more as a friend, and everyone was super inclusive. Not only did I have a really good time, but it made me want to go more. I couldn’t wait for the next session. I soon began to talk to members outside of the meeting and even ended up becoming friends with a few of them. All thanks to the simple one hours Freerice sessions from 5-6 pm on weekends. It also gave me something to do if I wasn’t already busy. What better way to make new friends? While helping make the world a better place, I also learned new material and reinforced previous knowledge. I couldn’t have asked for a better first year with the Key Club, given that it was fully online, having made new friends, helped communities from all over the world, and also got service hours from it. As much as I hope next year is in person, with the way Monte Vista currently runs Key Club online, I would be fine staying online.”
