Happy July! I hope you are all taking some quality time to refresh and rejuvenate this summer.

Summertime is one of the best times to get involved in your community, especially through Key Club! Remember that Key Club is a year round club, meaning that club and division activities continue throughout the summer. Be sure to attend as many service projects as possible! If you’re an officer, host events for the members that you serve. Plan club socials! Run a lemonade stand for the Pediatric Trauma Program! Find service projects in your community! If you’re a member, make sure you attend these events that your officers plan, and do your part in serving the community.

Be sure to attend the July DCM in Alameda on the 14th! We’ll be holding our Region 9 Olympics at this annual event. You’ll be able to meet members from all around the East Bay at Olympics, including your pen-pals, if you applied for that last month! It’s a great way to meet more people that have the same passion for service as you do.

Make it a great month, Blue Devils! It’s always a beautiful day to save lives.

Hey Blue Devils !

I hope you all are having an amazing summer so far! Thank you for all the love and support on my first newsletter (: I hope you continue checking in every month, and make sure you check out the CNH District Newsletter as well!

Even though it’s summer, service never stops, so make sure you’re attending events! I can’t believe we’ve already made so much progress towards our term goals even though the term’s just begun. We have an upcoming DCM on the 14th, the Region 9 Olympics, where you can meet your pen-pals and many other people who share burning with service just as much as you are. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

On May 19, the Key Club members enjoyed spending time volunteering at the walk to Cure Arthritis in Livermore. At the event, there were members from Campolindo High School, Amador Valley High School, California High School, Dublin High School, and Monte Vista High School and Dougherty Valley High School. Our members helped with blowing up balloons and later on helped with tying the balloons onto the pole frame, which was placed at the end of the walk to welcome the walkers. After completing the balloon entrance, we went on the trail, delivering pom poms and cow bells to other volunteers that were cheering for the walkers at certain locations. After completing the trial and passing out items, we returned to the end of the walk to cheer and congratulate the people that finished the walk. We did many of our Key Club cheers and it was very rewarding seeing the smiles on their faces.

Since there was a DJ playing music, many members took the stage and danced for everyone. As more people with children finished the walk and got food at booths, we helped with setting up games for the children or played along with them. There was a hula hoop contest, dance contest, as well as a limbo contest. Our members had a blast helping and joining in on the contest. It was very rewarding to see the happiness of people as they finished their walk to end arthritis and I am glad that I was apart of helping an event with such a significance.

Jacklyn Wang, Campolindo “At this DWS, Key Clubbers from all around came to help set up for this event and to cheer the walkers on as they came by. We got to release our iconic Key Club spirit to not only the walkers, but fellow Key Clubbers. Something that I really enjoyed from the event is when another school’s Key Club (I don’t remember which!) asked us how we felt as they walked by. This was my first time attended a DWS and I really enjoyed interacting with the other Key Clubs. Aside from meeting new people, I also made stronger bonds and new friendships between the people in my own club. Although most of the event was just us standing around waiting for people to pass, all of us had a lot of fun.

At the Art and Wind Festival held at Central Park, the Key Clubbers of DVHS and other volunteer clubs were given the opportunity to work in the kids area. There we all helped maintain and begin small craft projects/paint faces for those who wanted it. These events allowed us to help the kids and peer into our creative side. The art and wind festival was one of the best times I had that marked the start of summer and I would recommend this event to anyone who would like to do it next year.

For all students, June is an especially amazing month, because it marks the beginning of summer break. For Amador Valley Key Club, June was especially amazing because our club held a wildly successful fundraiser, raising $900 for the Pediatric Trauma Fund through selling graduation leis! The leis were handmade by club members, and sold during lunch and graduation. The ubiquity of the leis, worn by the vast majority of seniors at graduation, attests to the great job of the club members in making them. Not only did the fundraiser support a great cause, but it also fostered camaraderie and friendship in the club, as club members bonded and created happy memories by spending time with each other while making and selling leis.

On May 12th, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Moraga Community Fair at the Rheem Shopping Center in Moraga. Prior to the actual event we were actually somewhat included in the planning of the event and helped out the Moraga Chamber of Commerce and the Moraga Valley Kiwanis with volunteer coordination. It was exciting as well as we had many volunteers from Campolindo Key Club sign up for the event! When we arrived at the Shopping Center it was completely packed with locals and even people as far as Fremont.

We mainly helped with set up for the event and staffing kids play areas such as the bouncy house and basketball hoop. There were so many kids and they were, for the most part, sweet, cute, and innocent kids. It was so rewarding to help them have fun as the school year winded down and the summer started. I also believe that as a club there was a conflict at the event that we really grew from. Right behind the basketball hoops there were two booths, one with an older man sitting alone and another with a middle aged man and his robots. Unfortunately, many of the kids (who were anywhere from 5-13) had pretty bad aim and the balls sometimes ended up near their booths. When I, or one of the other key clubbers went to retrieve the ball we were treated quite rudely and told, “If it happens again, I’m keeping the ball”. Of course it happened multiple times and there was really nothing we could do about it; attempting to deal with, especially with the middle aged robot fanatic, was both incredibly frustrating and disheartening. Eventually, we learned that some people are going to be like that no matter what and that the only way to solve problems they cause are to bring them to justice with the people in charge :) Anyway, the event was incredibly fun and we learned so much!

“The Youth Expo was an event held in Emerald Glen Park of Dublin. I decided to volunteer this event because it sounded like a fun event because there was going to be bands playing. I went to volunteer and there we served pizzas, drinks, and helped the technicians that were in charge of the Expo. It was an amazing experience because I saw that many people were able to enjoy the event and the bands played really well. Well beyond my expectations.”

The Nephcure Bay Area Walk was actually an event that I found as a Vice President for my club, so I had a lot of hope for it, and I am happy to say it did not disappoint! I got up bright and early to attend, and received a volunteer shirt upon arriving. The event leader, Lisa, was very welcoming and organized. I was assigned to the face painting booth, where I used a kit with stencils, paints, and glitter to do face paint for children that came by. It was really fun! I got to hear a lot of inspirational stories about people who overcame FSGS, a cause of nephrotic syndrome and kidney failure. Overall, I’m really glad I got to go to this event with my fellow key clubbers, and I hope my club can do it again next year.

Marian Wang, Dublin The Nephcure bay area walk was surprisingly fun! I had the opportunity to meet people not only in key club but in interact as well.Originally I was in charge of the prize wheel station but this time I decided to help out with face painting. At first one of the paintings I did turned out horribly. But luckily with enough practice I managed to get the hang of it! I recommend any members to go out of your comfort zones and open yourself up to more service opportunities. You won’t regret it!
