What’s up, Blue Devils ? Happy September, and Happy Fall Season! Welcome back to a new school year filled with new members and new opportunities. As we are well on our way into the recruitment season, remember to keep an open mind and think outside of the box. Whether you’re a member, officer, or advisor, I encourage you to get creative with how you show why Key Club matters to you. It can be as simple as memorizing a short “elevator pitch,” which is a short, conversational speech in which you go through the basics of what Key Club is all about. Or, it can even be as complex as making a video, holding a large fundraiser the list goes on and on! Remember to talk to friends, new and old, about the importance of service to the community, and share some reasons why Key Club specifically is different from other clubs. Talk about the various conventions and large-scale events we have going on throughout the year, divisional projects and meetings, socials, and fundraisers. The point is for YOU to decide how YOU want the world to think about this amazing organization. In addition, we’re just around the corner from some of the biggest events of the year Region Training Conference (RTC) and Fall Rally North (FRN)! RTC is held every year in a joint event with Region 9 (which includes us and the rest of the East Bay) and Region 17 (Silicon Valley, Peninsula, and Central Coast) at Camp Jones Gulch in La Honda, California. It’s a great event for new and old members alike to bond with people throughout the Bay Area, explore new topics relating to Key Club and Preferred Charities, and develop leadership skills. Fall Rally North is our largest fundraiser for the Pediatric Trauma Program of the year at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom! Make sure you register early for both events, and don’t forget to order spirit packs as we approach Fall Rally. I highly recommend that you attend both events! Remember to fundraise, fundraise, fundraise as we approach Fall Rally! I’ll see you very soon, Blue Devils. Yours in Service,

A LETTER FROM YOUR DNE

Hey Blue Devils ! I hope the new school year is treating you well so far. We’ve reached the fall season, the most exciting part of the term! However, with the excitement also comes stress beforehand, and I know many of you are suffering from something called “senioritis”, which, I know I am for sure. You know, a great way to relieve stress from school is going to service events, whether it be a DCM or a DWS (; Two of Key Club’s most hyped events, RTC and FRN, are coming up FAST. HOWEVER, this does not mean you should skip out on all the division / club level service projects in between. Bring some friends with you to these events!! I promise they’re always a blast, plus you can knock off some hours for your FRN requirements this term. In case Justin and I haven’t made it clear already, there are new FRN requirements this year, and I hope you read through them on the Table of Contents or in Justin’s weekly emails. The Division Leadership Team is currently coming up with incentives to keep members active even after FRN and to reach our division’s service goal of 4,000 hours (one of them might be dyeing Justin’s hair blue for FRN). Stay tuned for updates on that!! As always, thank you to those who have been sending me articles and visuals; the newsletters would be incomplete without them (: I’ve been able to meet so many new people so far in this term, and I can’t wait to get to know more of you guys in future events !! Sizzling with Service,

Visuals submitted by Key Club Campolindo

On July 28th, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Concord Food Bank with other members of our division for our Division Wide Service event. It was really exciting because I was able to meet different people from the division that I had never met before and our club, Campolindo Key Club, had the biggest turn out. Since it was such a hot day as well, working in the cold and brisk refrigerated area was refreshing and a good way to simmer down from the heat. I myself, had never been in the food bank before so I was so shocked they they so nicely and readily accommodate the volunteers. They had a sign up sheet and area where we could put our bags. As soon as we got to the food bank, they put us to work. Since one of the officers at Campolindo had already volunteered at the food bank prior to the DWS, she was able to help us all to quickly get on task. The man in charge gave us a quick run down on what the Concord Food Bank does. Did you know that they unload and distribute close to 12 million pounds of food annually?! It was so encouraging to hear that they so selflessly

dedicate their time to help others in need. For the next two hours we worked tirelessly in order to bag two 700 pound boxes of apples into neon green netted bags. We had to carefully comb through each box so that we could do quality control and get rid of the inedible apples that were moldy or overly bruised. But it was okay, because we all had our gloves on! It was kind of gross, but we had fun disgusting everyone else with our unique finds. It was tiring but we had a lot of fun, we were able to talk and get to know each other better, as well as pretend apples were basketballs and shoot them into the trashcan. We had finished early but since we had extra time, we got to bag a big box of plums. They were a lot less bruised and easier to package! Since we had the experience from bagging the apples, we were able to work faster and more efficiently. After we had finished, we bid our goodbyes to our new friends. Overall, the event was very fun and successful, we were able to be upbuilt for doing such gratifying work. Also, if I ever want to do more community service, familiarizing myself with how the food bank works will prove to be very helpful.

by Charmae Wang, Campolindo On the July 21, Key Club members from Campolindo High School volunteered at the Salvation Army in Oakland. We arrived at 9:30 AM, where we first began cleaning up the open area where the Salvation Army lets kids who stay at their daycare play. We moved the play structures and toys to another location and removed the sand pit. Then we pulled out weeds from the ground and when we were

done, we distributed wood chips evenly across the ground. It was a great experience as it really made us key club members feel that we were contributing and bettering our community. Volunteering for the Salvation Army made me feel like I was really helping out people who are less fortunate than me and it was extremely gratifying to see all the hard work we had done when we finished.

by Jennifer Liu, Dublin On July 28th, we visited the Concord Food Bank for the division’s 4th July DWS to help sort out food to distribute to the needy. There were a total of 6 of us, from Campolindo, Dublin, and Monte Vista, and we worked in two groups of three. For around two hours, we managed to sort through two big tubs of apples and half a tub of stone fruit (we spent the time bagging them, which made our hands very, very cold). It was definitely a fun event, and it was wonderful getting to know some people I hadn’t had the chance to talk to before. Finishing up the work and seeing the amount of fruit we’d bagged at the conclusion of the two hours was also really rewarding, especially knowing it’d go towards keeping some people well fed. It was definitely a wonderful way to spend my Saturday afternoon!

On Saturday July 14th, an event so spectacular that it can be paralleled to the great Olympic games took place in Alameda crab cove. For the small price of $5, this event welcomed not just members of D26S, but rather all members in region 9 who had time to participate in the amazing Region 9 Olympics, with all the proceeds going to the Pediatric Trauma Program. I was lucky enough to be able to participate and compete in the Grand Prix Tournament themed event on Team Daisy led by the LTG of D8 Katrina Sacluti. To start the day off, we played a bunch of icebreaker games, such as huggy bear and simon says, while we waited for more people to show up. After that, an introduction was given by the LTGs of each division, and everyone was then separated into their chosen teams. Next came all the activities such as Dragon Tails, fastpaced obstacle course relays, trivia challenges, sponge relay races, photo frame, and spirit battles, with a lunch break in between. The day was full of fun and enjoyment, with key clubbers from all over region 9 being able to socialize and meet new people. The only downside about this event was not putting on enough sunscreen, so make sure you all bring sunscreen with you next year unless you want to look like a tomato.
