Our Lt. Governor Julia Shen A Message from LTG

Hey D26S Blue Devils!! Congratulations on finishing the school year! My name is Julia Shen, and I am so honored to be your Division 26 South Lieutenant Governor for the 2013-2014 term! Currently, I am a rising senior at Miramonte High School, and my past years of Key Club have been truly enjoyable. I hope I am able to spread that joy around to all officers and members!

This is a monthly newsletter, contrary to what the title may imply, so keep an eye out for our newsletter every month! It’ll be a great resource to find out about upcoming events, dates, DCM agendas, and more!!

Can you believe it’s already been three months since DCON?! I hope each and every one of you has been doing tons of service and fundraising! Don’t forget our division goal: $1500 as a division before Fall Rally! Although it may sound like a large total, if we work together as a division, we can definitely achieve it.

I’m so excited for the upcoming year, and I am confident we can reach all of our goals. By the time DCON 2014 rolls around, we can shout with spirit “I FEEL GOOD!” because we will truly feel good about our accomplishments as a division.

Here’s to an amazing year! DIVISION GOAL: $1500 Before Fall Rally! Blazing with service, Julia Shen

NEW DIVISION EXECUTIVES Claire Yu | Division Secretary Claire Yu Hello! My name is Claire Yu, and I go to Las Lomas High School, Class of 2016. I have recently joined Key Club and very excited for the years to come! One of my goals is to learn more about Key Club and influence others to join and make a difference. My hobbies are swimming, cross-country, and playing piano and violin. “Be the change you wish to see in this world.” -Ghandi

Connie Ng | Executive Assistant Connie Ng Hey D26S Blue Devils! My name is Connie Ng, pronounced –ing. I have been in Key Club for 3 years now. This past 2012 to 2013 year I was Monte Vista High School’s club treasurer and this 2013 to 2014 year I am the club president. And as many of you might know, I was also this past year’s Task Coordinator for “The Eliminate” Project. I was born between Christmas and th New Years on the 28 of December. Key Club has become an important part of my life and I want to share that with all of you. So this coming 2013 to 2014 year I hope to bring more fun to D26S and meet many of you individually!

Billy Huang | Division News Editor

Consectetuer:

Billy Huang Hey guys! My legal name is Liyang Huang, but I go by Billy. I will be a senior at Dougherty Valley High School and this will be my fourth year in Key Club! I’m really excited to be your Division News Editor for the 2013-2014 term! Just a little bit about myself—I like playing sports more than watching them, if I’m home then I’m probably on Netflix, I like winter and fall because cold beats heat, I hate spring because of allergies, and I like helping other people because in the end, “We’re just walking each other home” (Ram Dass). I promise to work hard on the newsletters if you buy me In-N-Out—double-double no onions, animal fries, and a vanilla shake. Thanks! 3

Car Wash/Moraga Community Faire Joe Li: It was a scorching 92 degrees that day as we were washing the cars with other people.. We volunteered at the Be The STAR You Are Charity Car Wash on May 11th. Volunteers from Dougherty Valley, Campolindo, and Miramonte came over to help wash cars. As some of the volunteers got there, one of the supervisors, Ho Wing was kind enough to elaborate on what BE the STAR You Are was as most of us didn’t know about the organization. Wing said, “Be The STAR You Are is a non-profit organization designed to help women, families, and youth-at-risk overcome obstacles, increase self-esteem, and gain a head start to beat the odds, through improved literacy and positive media.” It was a great way to help fundraise for this charity by washing cars because we saw that many cars needed a wash as they passed by. We didn’t have many customers at first, but later on, there were about 3-4 cars coming in at once, wanting car washes. So we got to work and helped clean cars until our shift was over. While this was going on, we also had two volunteers helping out at the Moraga Community Faire.

Dougherty Valley Water Balloon Fundraiser Mike Wang: Dougherty Valley High School was having its annual field day (a time for buying food and doing activities) and Key Club perceived this as a perfect opportunity for a fundraiser. At first it was decided we would sell pizza, but that idea had already been taken. Nearly all food selections were gone, and there was almost nothing available. After a day of consideration, Key Club finally decided to sell water balloons to our fellow classmates since it was a hot day. We made over 200 water balloons, which became an immediate success. They quickly sold out for a price of 2 balloons for $1 or 5 balloons for $2. Everyone enjoyed them, including us Keyclubbers! We raised over $60 for the whole fundraiser.

Spotlight on OTC

“Only 2 days left until OTC! I believe that OTC is a great way for officers to learn what they have to do to improve on in the upcoming year such as membership, fundraising ideas, and new service events. I like the idea that officers from other schools come together so that everyone can discuss about things that work well within each school.” – Joe Li, Miramonte

“I learned how to be a better president and role model for my members!” – Jennifer Chou, Monte Vista

“I finally learned how to properly fill out an MRF at OTC and a lot of other skills that apply not only to Key Club but to leadership in general. Probably the most important lesson I learned is either the necessity to delegate the work among the officers or the necessity of energizers.” – Larry Wang, Acalanes

“I realized I needed to recognize members more this year, and I really want to implement the 'Member of the Month' or 'Member of the Year' awards next year. As President, I felt like I fell into the trap of wanting to do everything, but this year I'll do my best to become a capable President and delegate tasks to keep all our officers involved.” – Janel Lee, Amador Valley

DISTRICT NEWS Attention Key Clubbers! Did you know? • Unintentional injury is the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S. • Unintentional injury kills more children per year than any other cause • 90% of these injuries can be prevented! One of Key Club’s major goals is to prevent unintentional injuries in order to reduce the number of children killed or injured by trauma. To carry out this goal, the Cali-Nev-Ha District created the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) which partners with children’s hospitals to train physicians and nurses and purchase medical equipment needed to save the lives of thousands of children. These achievements and goals are successfully realized through generous donations made by members like you! With this in mind, Division 26 South has set up a GOAL for all the your clubs—to raise $1500 for PTP before Fall Rally! So go out and help the kids Bee safe!
