Overall, golf ’s U S consumer base is now a record 41 1 million, with three distinct participant groups (see graphic)

When someone tells you they’re planning to retire, your most immediate thought is that they’ll finally head off into the sunset in their golf car t to play the game they’ve revered for their entire life. Not so with Tom Woodard Retirement is just another chapter for him His legacy will be forever be woven into the fabric of golf in the state
From meager beginnings in Midland, Texas, Tom and his family moved to Denver just 2 bloc ks away from City Park Golf Cour se in 1966 when he was 10 year s old. He quic kly learned how to
caddy for some of the best money player s in the area who ever laced up their steel spikes Caddies would of ten shag balls on the small range before and after their loops. Doing so, Woodard rapidly became infatuated with golf The attraction for young Tom was free lessons for the kids in the City Park GC area. The cour se also provided use of cut-down clubs for junior s The clubs were so heavy and stif f that Woodard developed a wristy style that ser ved him well over the years
When Woodard was unable to attain a scholarship to go to Colorado University, he applied for and was granted an Evans Scholarship as a walk-on af ter caddying
at City Park GC. A six-round qualifying tournament for the Univer sity of Colorado players netted Tom a spot on the team af ter finishing third. Les Fowler, CU coach at the time, asked his top player, “ Who is that kid” referring to Tom The player replied, “I don’t know, but he sure can play.”
Af ter a 4-year college career, Tom received financial help from local businessman,Willie Kellum, who used to gamble at City Park GC This financial stipend jumpstar ted his professional endeavor where he played the Asian Tour. This is when he played and practiced with Payne Stewart. In those days, all the Americans traveled and stayed together.
To prove the point, Tom proudly displays the picture of a gathering around a table with Payne and others. In 1984 Tom had his best year ever winning 9 times on the mini tour s Even though he won, there was not a lot of money on tour during those years.
He played in the old Qualifying School for the PGA Tour 5 times. In those days, a player had to re-qualify if they didn't win enough to keep their card Tom qualified and played on tour af ter 3 successful attempts and missed qualifying once by only 2 strokes For 8 year s during that period, he played and practiced with the best players on the planet. But tour life wasn’t as glamorous as you might believe, especially when he had a young family bac k home. Having your family tag along on the road with you isn’t much better Woodard got his PGA Tour card in the fall the next year. He had his best tournament at Quad Cities finishing 10th and made a paltr y $1600 Woodard played professional golf on the PG A Tour for 2 1/2 year s. With a wife and two kids at home and at 30 years of age, Tom felt like he couldn’t play any better than he was playing at that juncture in his life. Ultimately, he quit tour life and decided to pur sue a regular paycheck . Traveling in a van with his family wore thin on him. Eventually golf brought

Tom pictured here with Payne Stewart on the Asian Tour
At the time of his graduation, he played the most rounds (111) of any golfer in the CU program While his career CU stroke average was a shade over 75, it was still second all-time to Hale Irwin at the time.
him bac k to his golf roots in Denver in 1986 as the manager of golf operations at City Park Back to where his golf life began
In talking to the people that have worked with Tom over the years it’s obvious that not only is he a tremendous leader, wellrespected and successful, but also has an infectious sense of humor Todd Marley, who worked with Tom during his stint at the city of Denver recalls Tom saying that two things would happen ever y day “The sun will come up and my ball will go lef t to right.” Tom still loves to play golf and occasionally will tell his staf f they need to get out and play an emergency 9 holes with him. If he knows you play golf he’ll fir st of all ask what your handicap is, and then attempt to talk you into a small money game, regardless of age and ability.
On one occasion when he was Director of Golf for the city of Denver, Woodard c hallenged a young staf f member to a game of golf At the conclusion, Tom was the victor and came away with the young man owing him a few dollars, which he didn’t possess Tom said, “That's ok You don’t have to pay me Just call me Big Daddy for the rest of the month.” Less than a couple of days later, the young man showed up with the money he lost to Tom saying, “I can’t handle calling you Big Daddy.”
Tom’s putting eventually became an issue so he reached out to a local putter company at the time asking if they could construct a long chest putter for him Because of his height, there were no putter s available at retail. The long putter saved his game in his later years, and he fondly naming it Rodney. During a late round at Inverness GC, during the Colorado Open, Rodney wasn’t behaving and somehow ended up in the pond alongside the 17th green. After ever yone had completed their round, Tom trekked back to the 17th hole and went wading into the water to retrieve his old friend.
Randy Meyers, Tom’s co-worker and successor at Foothills Park and Recreation, was asked about the recent retirement par ty, whic h turned out to be a roast Tom spent 17 years at the helm as Director of Golf. Randy had written some glowing remarks about time spent being mentored by Tom The compliments seemed to go on until Randy looked at Tom and asked, “This IS how you wrote it up, isn’t it?” As expected, the crowd who was there to thank their beloved leader howled with laughter.
Quoting Tom is relatively simple because he uses the same quotes quite of ten. It’s common to hear him say on the first tee, “I won’t ask you to hunt for my ball because I’m not going to hunt for your s.” The reason being the eventual encounter with snakes in native areas of the course. He swears he can never see the ball and forever is saying, “ Where’d that drive go? Did anyone see it?” Tongue in cheek , he likes to remind his playing opponents that yes, he is in the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame
There are 4 golfers in the histor y of the University of Colorado who have been inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. Three of them have won majors on the PG A Tour Being recognized as an outstanding athlete, Woodard stands alongside Hale Ir win, Dale Douglass and Steve Jones. Because of his success at the college level, Tom made honorable mention All American his senior year. The list of accomplishments bestowed on Tom Woodard are lengthy and well-deser ved
It’s no surprise that Tom Woodard has forged a hall of fame career in golf. As a golfer he was the 1997 Golf Per son of the Year in Colorado Tom was also the Colorado PGA Section player of the year in 1992 and 1993. He was inducted into the National Black Golfers Hall of Fame in 2012 and inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame the next year. The University of Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame came calling in 2015 followed up by his induction into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame just two years later
Tom’s community involvement is just as broad as his playing career and achievements. In the past, Tom has dutifully ser ved on the Board of Directors for the First Tee of Denver for two terms, the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame and the National Black Golfers Hall of Fame. He has also ser ved on the Board of Governors for the Colorado Golf Association

Golf is a game of consistency whether you hit a big banana fade or a baby draw You want to know where it’s going all the time and playing for that ball shape should you assist you in going low on the golf course Consistency in putting is also just as important, yet very few recreational golfers ever concentrate on this part of their game. If you could become more consistent with the flat stick, wouldn’t it pay huge dividends for you in the long run? Of course
I’ve created a drill that you should incorporate into your practice routine and certainly before you go to play even the most casual of rounds Becoming a world class putter is within your reach. It will also eliminate the dreaded three-putts and dare I say the fourputts
On average, tour players hit their approach shots much nearer the hole than we do That’s why their putting averages are so much lower than ours If you could hit shots into the green much closer, wouldn’t your second putt become much more manageable, thus lowering your scores? Becoming a better distance put-
This drill requires two golf balls On any practice green, simply hit the first ball to whatever distance you want Then, attempt to hit the second ball the same exact distance The whole premise here is to create consistency in your putting, specifically in distance control This drill can be repeated hitting uphill, downhill, short putts, longer putts and across the fall line for breaking putts The more you can strike the same putt twice, the more consistent your putting should become. Extra benefit; you’re learning the speed of the greens for that day at the same time
For extra credit, measure the distance between the two putts and keep notes on how lengthy the space is in between them As you progress, the distance between the two balls should decrease Rinse and repeat this drill for a week and you’ll surprise yourself at how proficient you’ve become at judging the green speed and how much more consistent your putting has become Inconsistency will be fading negative memory You’re welcome Jerry Walters is co-host of the award winning podcast, In The Fairway, and teaches putting at different locations To reach him, email at freegolf1@gmail com D

Los Cabos is Booming!
New Projects Underway at Pueblo Bonito Resorts and Quivira GC
There are a number of reasons for the runaway success and enduring appeal of Latin America’s hottest destination
Counterintuitively, the global pandemic ignited a major growth spurt Holidaymakers and real estate buyers alike identified the stunning desert-meets-sea getaway of Los Cabos, which combines natural beauty, ideal weather and ample amenities, as a safe retreat
Golf, recognized as a safe ‘social distancing’ sport, has always been a key driver of upscale tourism to Los Cabos It’s also a prized amenity for guests of Pueblo Bonito Resorts, who enjoy exclusive access to Quivira Golf Club, its epic Jack Nicklausdesigned course etched across a spectacular clifftop site high above the sea
As the destination has grown, so have Pueblo Bonito and Quivira Here’s a sampling of what’s in the pipeline at the most desirable enclave at Land’s End, where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean
New Golf Course
Quivira will break ground this year on a second Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course Nicklaus, the man behind Quivira’s flagship course opened in 2014, will return to build a second venue as per the development’s original 36-hole blueprint
“The first golf course at Quivira is a spectacular layout playing across a remarkable piece of property,” Nicklaus said, adding that the second course should be
“stunning and equally as spectacular ” The new layout will expand the golf inventory at Quivira Los Cabos to satisfy increased demand from three new real estate projects currently under construction: St Regis Resort & Residences; Old Lighthouse Golf & Ocean Club (to be managed by Rosewood); and the Alvar condominium development
While the routing plan for the new course has not been finalized, it will occupy a prime parcel in the northwest section of the 1,850-acre development Holes will be carved into rolling desert foothills and broad valleys thick with cactus, with winding arroyos framing or crossing the fairways. The southern portion of the course will offer panoramic ocean views Tall peaks in the Sierra de la Laguna range will serve as aiming points on the interior holes
The Golden Bear, an indefatigable workhorse with 400-plus design credits to his name worldwide, is singlehandedly responsible for placing Los Cabos on the international golf map His design commission at Quivira is another (and perhaps final) chance to burnish his legacy in Los Cabos, which he has often described as “one of my all-time favorite places ”
Antonio Reynante, Quivira’s director of golf, believes Nicklaus has a special design opportunity “At the original course, especially along the cliffs and in the dunes, Jack was able to create a truly unique golf experience unrivalled for challenge and scenic splendor,” he said “But the land set aside
for the new course is more generous from a routing and strategic perspective Nicklaus and his design team will not be constrained by steep sandy hills, sheer granite cliffs and strong onshore winds He will have a blank slate on which to build whatever he feels the land can yield by way of a versatile, enjoyable test of golf.” Reynante added that Quivira’s second course will be a championship-caliber layout stretching to more than 7,000 yards
Beach Club
Created as an exclusive amenity for residents and guests, the $6 2-million dollar Beach Club at Quivira Los Cabos debuted last November. It is a valuable addition to a resort and residential complex that has grown
by leaps and bounds over the past few years Serene and luxurious, the familyfriendly Beach Club features a large zeroentry pool, beach deck, hot tub, snack bar, bathrooms with showers and changing facilities, a fully equipped gym, a beachfront restaurant-bar, as well as green grass areas for special events.
Sports fans gravitate to the large rectangular bar, which features six suspended flat-screen TV’s Snacks, refreshing drinks and specialty cocktails are served along with extraordinary views of the ocean Day beds, chaise lounges and a fire pit are available for relaxation A “sailboat cinema,” with movies projected onto a canvas sail, offers unique after-dark entertainment.
The Beach Club is part of Q Life, a

lifestyle club created exclusively for residents at Quivira Los Cabos, which offers a synergistic approach to individual pursuits and group activities With its comprehensive menu of programs, Q Life inspires residents to seek new ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle while developing friendships with those who share their interests This holistic club is also designed to promote physical, cultural, social and intellectual wellness among residents while maintaining harmony between the environment and the community
Reconfigured Golf Course
The debut of the Beach Club necessitated the elimination of the beachfront golf cart path that led from the staging area to the former first tee at Quivira Golf Club It also required a reconfiguration of the golf holes
The par-4 18th hole, a classic links-style par 4 with an infinity-edge green that appears to float on the ocean, now functions as No 1 Faced into the prevailing onshore breeze, it provides a firm but fair test and a solid start to the round.
The holes thereafter follow suit The original first hole, a left-to-right dogleg with a sandy arroyo crossing the fairway 100 yards short of the green, is now No 2
One advantage of the reordering of Quivira’s holes is the fact that the par-4 ninth hole (previously the eighth), which plays uphill to a green tucked in a cleft of the dunes, leads directly to the Oasis, the club’s main comfort station It’s now a true

halfway house that marks the midpoint of the round
Other advantages: with a par-35 front nine and par-37 back nine, the course is now better balanced
Quivira concludes at the previous 17th hole, a new creation debuted last June to replace a hole requisitioned by the Alvar condo development. Now the 18th hole, this tactical gem is a short par 4 that
doglegs to the right around a vast sandy waste area The target is a well-defended, triple-tiered green
When the final putts are holed, players can look up from the putting surface to savor a panoramic view of the sea
“It almost feels like a new course,” Reynante enthused. “Our members and residents love the new sequencing of holes We’ve also eliminated the long
drive from the previous 17th green to the former 18th tee ”
Recently named to Golf Digest’s list of the “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses,” Quivira lives up to its reputation as one of Jack Nicklaus’s crowning achievements as a designer and one of the most spectacular courses on earth.

Think-Aloud for Golfers
What is think-aloud?
Think-aloud (TA) is a cognitive strategy and research method The TA method has been characterized by verbalizing a task and expressing all relevant factors influencing choices (Eccles & Arsal, 2017). Verbalizing an action was adopted into psychology research because expert observation requires interpretation; however, the voicing process of participants provides data and cognitive introspection (van Someren et al , 1995) TA research in sports depends on an athlete's ability to verbalize, avoid distraction, and vocalize all thoughts connected to behavior and decision-making (Whitehead et al., 2015; van Someren et al., 1995). The suitability of golf in TA research is because it is a self-paced sport (Whitehead & Jackman) Golf has limited action and extensive analysis and decision-making involved in a golf shot (Whitehead et al , 2015) Therefore, does the data identify the performance benefits of this cognitive process?
Who Benefits?
The beginner to the expert golfer can gain from TA because it supports actions. However, the researchers explained that verbalization and situational awareness are essential, and some prospective participants could not verbalize significant elements connected to their behavior However, the golfer's skill level is not associated with the TA cognitive strategy During a laboratory putting experiment, the beginner golfer would express the technical requirements for a shot, while the expert golfer would explain the action plan (Arsal et al., 2016). In a competitive setting on the golf course, the pre-shot and post-shot analysis of golfers uncovered the mental activities of observation, planning, and reflection on performance; furthermore, the self-regulation and control induced by TA were meaningful to positive shot outcomes (Whitehead & Jackman, 2021)
Identifying what is happening as it happens has been significant in discovering TA benefits in sports performance. For example, golfer's recall of their actions in postround interviews was distant from their actual in-round think-aloud data; furthermore, the three tiers of TA were not distinguishable (Whitehead & Jackman, 2021; Arsal et al , 2016) The different tiers of this cognitive process are linked to increased performance outcomes in golf; however, each level of TA has been more suitable for specific shots or circumstances (Arsal et al ,2016) Meaning that too much thinking could prevent fluid motion; however, not enough thought could generate indifferent golf shots.
What are the tiers of this strategy?
The three tiers of think-aloud are 1) simple inner speech, 2) expressing concepts or sensory stimuli in verbal terms, and 3) verbalizing the why: notions, meaning,
and motives (Whitehead et al , 2015) As stated earlier, a beginner golfer would detail the technique needed for a shot which is a level 2 process. The competitive golfer implemented level 3 because the planning process included a deeper understanding of the conditions of the golf shot However, a one-foot putt elicits a level 1 process Although the descriptions of TA are simple, researchers train each level to participants to ensure rich data Therefore, golfers can benefit from developing this mental strategy
How is the cognitive process limited?
The golfer needs to be able to verbalize at different levels to employ TA; furthermore, the level of TA must be appropriate for the shot to elevate physical performance (Whitehead & Jackman, 2021; Arsal et al , 2016; Whitehead et al , 2015) Coaching becomes significant because each golfer processes information differently A cognitive coach can guide golfers to practical mental activities that complement physical activities because online research cannot identify personal needs and enable achievement

The K-T Tapper is a product designed to help people, young and old, who are having trouble getting their tee in the ground because it’s too hard or too cold If you have arthritis or not enough wrist strength, the KT Tapper will help by creating a starter hole for your tee. It will also help to get you off the tee quicker, which makes everyone happy The inventor, Amy Knott, is pursuing interested investors that are serious about buying this innovative patent and groundbreaking (excuse the pun) idea! The K-T Tapper is now ready to be on the shelves and sold to millions of golf lovers everywhere!
Amy’s story starts with an incident in 2001 when she was thrown from a motorcycle while riding as a passenger with a group of friends Subsequently, Amy suffered multiple injuries including a shattered shoulder
After two 8-inch pins were inserted, she was off to rehab, which was more than challenging having a three-month-old baby boy and a six-year-old little girl
Having worked through rehab and feeling better, Amy was in another accident in December, 2024. This time it was a single car accident in her home town of Towanda, Pennsylvania She was driving home after
finishing her finals at Lackawanna College at night while it was raining Amy’s jeep lost control and hit a maple tree head on The jeep was totaled and she was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead on arrival Because of the amazing paramedics and hospital staff, they were able to bring her back! The only thing on her mind when she awoke was getting home to her babies by Christmas, which she did She suffered from frontal lobe damage but was able to continue on with her education Amy was awarded a Golf Scholarship in 2005 and continued on to get her Bachelor ’s Degree in Forensic Psychology with Honors in 2018
As unfortunate luck would have it, Amy was involved in yet a third accident in 2019 Her wrist was snapped in half and her pinky was broken in three spots which she didn’t realize until after she pulled both of her parents out of the back of the wrecked truck Fortunately, no one was seriously injured; however, Amy still does not have full use of her shoulder, wrist or right hand pinky. In spite of her physical limitations, she has not allowed that to keep her from enjoying the excitement, challenge, and fun of her favorite
sport and pastime – golf.
One day while playing golf with her parents at Riverdale on the Knolls, they saw some gentlemen with a hammer and nail trying to get a starter hole in the ground for their golf tees Having suffered from her own injuries and understanding the difficulty of getting a tee in hard ground, Amy and her Dad looked at each other and said, “There has got to be an easier way!! Jokngly, her Dad said, “Invent something”, so he did, and the K-T Tapper was born The K-T Tapper has been instrumental in helpng golfers who struggle teeing it up on hard or frozen ground!
Again, she is now pursuing interested nvestors that are serious about buying this creative patented idea. Her Dad, Jack Rem-
snyder, was able to hold the first prototype two days before he passed and said, “Amy you got this figured out!” which is what he always said about his golf swing! “Thank you Dad!”
Amy would like to thank her mom, Roseline Remsnyder; her Dad, Jack Remsnyder; her Daughter, Sarah Moravec; her son Zane Neubert; her Fiance', Michael Mohney; her Aunt, Susanne Srb; her Lawyer; Daryl Lawrnce and all the engineers from LTM Plastics; and all her friends from Towanda Pennsylvania in the support through her long and exciting journey with the K-T Tapper!!

CheckPoint Golf Systems has solved the issue of “Making Putting Fun”
lower their score by putting correctly After all, a 300 yard drive has never shaved a stroke from your score
The primary reason for golfers not practicing putting more often (if at all) is that most do not know how to practice putting. Most golfers go to a swing coach (or a friend) to work on their swing but less then 5% actually practice putting, which as we all know is how you score in golf
To meet this objective we came up with a “brilliantly simple” product called the Putting Flag Stick, from which we built our 7 step putting program around Think of the Putting Flag Stick as a Putting Coach!
Here’s Why:
1) It provides a process to establish your pre-putt routine
2) It explains the importance of keeping your putter on plain and your stroke path consistent
3) It provides a means to hit the golf ball in the center of your putter
4) It ensures your putter face is neutral, neither open nor closed
5) It begins to address your commitment to the pre-putt routine establishing a repeatable process and proper stroke mechanics
6) It enables putting uphill, side-hill and downhill and begins to address reading the green
7) Finally, it will instruct you on distance and speed control over 3 ft incremental distances at 3, 6, 9 and 12ft lengths
Lastly, the Putting Coach will also do assessments between putting lessons to see if you are improving
The Putting Flag Stick does all of the 7 steps outlined above and provides for assessment capability. It includes drill scoring sheets, weekly tracking sheets, monthly tracking rolling up to yearly tracking The Putting Flag Stick is the only putting training product on the market to have this capability
To make “Putting Fun” we had to make the entire system a repeatable process and by doing this and applying metrics (gathering data with the tracking sheets) the golfer is now able to challenge themselves to improve and capture their “personal best”
scoring metrics
CheckPoint Golf Systems has solved the issue of “Making Putting Fun” in the following way:
• The Putting Flag Stick sets up in 60–90 seconds
• Its quick and simple to change between drills or you can set up the primary 4 drills (constituting our putting mechanic circle) to move back and forth between drills effortlessly
• Online instructional videos (easily accessible via your smart phone) to explain/demonstrate the 7 step putting program at https://puttingflagstick com/
• The Putting Flag Stick comes with premeasured tethers (of 3 & 6 foot lengths) measuring out the distances for all of the drills ensuring that each drill is repeatable Plus with the Eagle Accessory kit, which includes 2-12ft and 2-9ft tethers, you may perform the S-drill (step 7 or the program)
“Golfers have always had an issue with practicing their putts; they all know they need to practice but other than walking up and dropping a few balls on the green, sel-
dom do To correct this our solution incorporates ease of use, convenience, repeatability and I hope common sense; remember I’m a golfer too and all of these things are important to me as well.” said Colin Maclean, Inventor & President
The way this new product works is very simple First you remove the existing flag stick and place the Putting Flag Stick in the cup Next, you select the drill you want to practice, set up the Putting Flag Stick in that configuration and you’re ready to go Once you’ve mastered the teaching drills you set up the Putting Flag Stick in the many variations of the “Circle Putting Drill” No longer is the Circle Putting drill static, you now have multiple patterns and putting distances (from 8 locations around the cup) to truly hone your skill to drain those 3, 6, 9 and 12 footers; just like they were all 3 footers
One of the added features to the product is that the Putting Flag Stick’s “flag stick” is also a ball remover; once you’ve sunk a few putts, simply walk over and pull up on the flag and “presto” your balls come up out of the cup, ready to be re-positioned to continue your drill
“What attracted me to the Putting Flag Stick was not only how easy it was to set up and use but also the realism it provided as to really playing (putting) in the game. What I mean is that every one of the 8 shots is from a different position so in a very short period of time you are getting quality and quantity; which is a very uncommon scenario with training products By providing all sorts of drills, a quick repeatable process and the way it challenges the player; this is the most effective skill training device for putting that I have ever come across.” said Rob Akins, PGA Teaching Professional and former coach of David Toms
The Putting Flag Stick includes the unit and 16 tethers of which 8 are 3ft in length and 8 are 6ft in length To perform the Sdrill the Eagle Accessory kit is required The Putting Flag Stick comes in its own carry bag and all training material and instructional videos are posted on our website, which allows access with your Smart Phone as needed
The Putting Flag Stick costs of $150 00 (which includes shipping) and is available immediately from CheckPoint Golf Systems at http://www PuttingFlagStick com D
