Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo

The last issue of the year… what a busy year it has been. November reminded us to be thankful and December teaches us to be caring & generous with our feeling as well as what we can give. As a kid I remember the Christmas season as a magical time of year.. Mom & dad piled us in the car and off we went.. shopping, sight seeing, visiting, and making decorations for the ‘company Christmas party’.. great meals and plenty of holiday spirits.. Good times. But Christmas was more than that in our family… our church had the best live nativity scene, in town. At least that’s what I thought. All the kids at church wanted to take a part and we took turns, standing out there by the side of the road, under the hay covered makeshift barn the men in the church built for the occasion. It was special to us and we knew why we were there. No one was there to stop us from ‘goofing around’ they didn’t have to… we were there to remember the story of Christmas and that we celebrate the birth of Jesus this time of year. As traffic would pass by you felt proud to be standing there...cars would slow down, some even stopped and walked up to where we were. Charismas carols was the music of the day and the onlookers even joined in. Back then no one was trying to stop us, it wasn’t considered a violation of somebody's rights...political correctness wasn’t the law of the land.. peoples rights were. Jesus was the reason for the season… I love Santa, who doesn't, but the lesson of Jesus’ birth, life and death is a foundation that we should try and live up to. His gift was kindness to all of us. Shouldn’t we at least give him some space in our day to day lives...

17. 18. Jimbo, 19. John decided to go skiing with his buddy, Keith. So they loaded up 20. John's minivan and headed north. After driving for a few hours, they got caught in a terrible blizzard. So they pulled into a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered the door if they could spend the night. 'I realize it's terrible weather out there and I have this huge house all to myself, but I'm recently widowed,' she explained. 'I'm afraid the neighbors will talk if I let you stay in my house.' 'Don't worry,' John said. 'We'll be happy to sleep in the barn. And if the weather breaks, we'll be gone at first light.' The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the night. Come morning, the weather had cleared, and they got on their way. They enjoyed a great weekend of skiing. But about nine months later, John got an unexpected letter from an attorney. It took him a few minutes to figure it out, but he finally determined that it was from the attorney of that attractive widow he had met on the ski weekend. He dropped in on his friend Keith and asked, 'Keith, do you remember that goodlooking widow from the farm we stayed at on our ski holiday up north about 9 months ago?' 'Yes, I do.' Said Keith. 'Did you, er, happen to get up in the middle of the night, go up to the house and pay her a visit?' 'Well, um, yes!,' Keith said, a little embarrassed about being found out, 'I have to admit that I did.' 'And did you happen to give her my name instead of telling her your name?' Keith's face turned beet red and he said, 'Yeah, look, I'm sorry, buddy. I'm afraid I did.' 'Why do you ask?' 'She just died and left me everything.'

Here are some of the items on the menu. Cat head biscuits (4 oz), bacon or tomato gravy biscuits, 6 different omelets and the home fries, are cooked with onion and bell peppers in such away the flavor comes out great. The cooks know how to cook hash brown just as good as waffle house, maybe a little better. The other items on the menu are 4 salads, homemade soup and chilli along with 15 different sandwiches. How many restaurants can you go in and get a fried bologna sandwich? Well you can at Jeannie's Friday night is all the fried catfish you can eat for $10.99. Saturday is New York Strip steak with a special rub for $11.99 with side. Jeannie's has specials on the board that are not in the menu. Like meat loaf, foot long hot dogs, philly skillet, dirty eggs, ( like an omelet except it isn't folded over like a omelet ). I counted six different types of pies and 6 different cakes listed one day. So if you are in Panama City Beach go by Jeannie's you can't go wrong. I know the next time we go to Emerald Coast we will be eating at Jeannie's. Till we eat again J. R.

Jimbo My adventures in all things mechanical started at a very young age. Everyone's first vehicle was either a pedal car or a bike or maybe skates. I had a pedal car probably first and took it apart well before first grade. Got a bicycle in first grade proceeded to take it apart too. Took too many things apart as a kid too, lawn mowers, bikes you get the picture. In my pre teen years always rebuilt my own bikes cool paint slicks on the rear, skinny front, cool seats, cut up fenders, and always a sissy bar. By then I had also discovered Hot Rod magazine and those little Big Daddy Ed Roth creations he would offer on t-shirts. Well I began drawing those on t -shirts for kids in my neighborhood our gang so to speak. We lived down the street from a racer too. I got to sit in a rail at about 12 it was owned by the late Q Ball Wales. I was hooked. In my teen years I guess my Dad finally relented and I got a car around 16, you got it', took it apart made it better. This effort was repeated over and over with each vehicle upgrade. In my late teen years I now discovered the go fast aspect of cars and the need to do the same. Spent I think more time under the hood and under the car than in them. At about that time I also got involved in motorcycles too. You got it took them apart painted modified and made them better too. I remember fondly one of my Dad's last comments before his passing was “son you just don't leave anything alone” in regard to a new truck I had purchased and modified. I had to give some of this hot rod stuff up during the early marriage years, though I did manage to keep a motorcycle through most of it. And now and then picking up a cheap little project to keep me going. Then my kids began growing up the little guys were now teens and I realized I needed to channel or redirect some of that youthful energy. That's right I got them an old car project. I can assure you that was a great way to keep two young boys out of mischief. As they grew the young one bought the oldest son out and we completed it so he could drive it his senior year in high school. Not many kids owned a freshly done 67 Ranchero in 91. He still owns it today too. Oh the other son was hooked too he had a cool little low S-10 that he and I worked over. Kids were grown now and my daughter could have cared less about cars, as long as it started and steered no problem. I was now free to start my dream build. In the coming years I helped a friend build a 33 Ford, that he brought me to the NSRA nationals in Louisville Ky. Started my first roadster project that week. Met some fantastic people in the street rod industry too. To me some of these folks were legends. The long awaited roadster project was slowly taking shape. After several years of hard work it was on the road, my first hot rod had finally been realized a 32 Ford roadster. I went to shows, drove it to Louisville, Pigeon Forge, and just about anywhere, without a top. Froze, got wet, roasted, toasted and had a blast doing it. Got Big Daddy Ed Roth to autograph some of my pictures of this car too, the year before his passing. He was a one of a kind guy, to me an American icon. Brought the wife along on some of these misadventures too, and she always said you ever build another one it better be a coupe. Oh and my daughter forbade me to open or even go near the garage when one of her dates showed up, sometimes I must confess that rule was violated. Sold the roadster and began the coupe project in 2000. I was having a blast again gathering parts, going to the Nationals and spending countless hours in the garage making the coupe better than the roadster. After several years of work it too was ready for the road. First in black primer then gray primer then after the big mess in 05 and another rebuild some paint. Can't say I did not have fun with the coupe I had a blast, but it seems I just can't leave things alone. Few years ago decided it was time for another roadster this time would be easier, the plan sell just the coupe body and buy a roadster body, folks it just ain't that easy. It took much longer than I thought to do the necessary work to the roadster body than I had anticipated. It's done as far as I'm concerned and I am having a blast. Who knows maybe in a few years it will need some freshening up, and I can tear it apart and repaint it, make it better. Why one may ask? My answer should be, “that's what I do, I make them better, I make them mine.” Jimbo we as a hotrod community are a blessed bunch of folks. I can honestly say, of all the people that I have had the pleasure to meet and just chat with, most if not all are great folks. They share this strange addiction to make things better, to take something like an old car or truck and to

personalize it, restore it, modify it, and at times put way more money in it than one could ever recover, it's amazing. It takes a lot of commitment to do the things we do, but to me it sure is fun. And we all have to remember that, we do this for fun, and because we can, and because we enjoy it. I am now working on the next generation of gear heads, we have a grandson he's 4 and claimed a 51 pickup I am working on, and a 5 month old too, he's not saying much yet but its coming. May need another project for him too. The oldest grandson does keep an eye on the progress with his big truck I might add. He is also a blast to take to car shows and cruise nights. Planning on getting him his own tool box this Christmas, next thing you know he too will be taking things apart. Throughout my hot rod adventure I have met a lot of great guys and ladies, and have been able to learn something from each. I am thankful for them all. Been blessed to meet and shake hands with some hot rod legends too. Take a kid to a cruise night, or a car show, I promise you it's well worth it, you may just learn something from them. Later the other …………. Glen

The Mississippi Street Rod Association is proud to announce that the 36th annual edition of Dixie Run will be held March 21-23, 2014. Dixie Run 36 is a pre'49, street rod only event. Once again, the Mississippi Street Rod Association is bucking the trend and keeping it "Old School". We're street rodders, and are keeping the Dixie Run tradition alive as a pre-'49 street rod only event for our fellow street rodders. Car Shows are nice, and there are plenty of good ones around, but you can't beat an old fashioned pre-'49 three day ROD RUN !! On Saturday 22 we will be auctioning off a 1932 Ford Roadster donated by Jack Brown. All proceeds will be donated to Hederman Cancel Center at Baptist Medical Center. The new and exciting location debuted last year in Pearl, Ms., just across the river on the east side of Jackson and has been selected again for the site of the premier, oldest street rod event in Mississippi. The City of Pearl has enthusiastically welcomed MSRA and Dixie Run last year. They put their efforts into establishing a new home for Dixie Run which should carry it well into the future. As a result, MSRA and Pearl's city officials have joined with the new Holiday Inn Hotel and Trustmark Park, home of the Mississippi Braves baseball club, to again host the 2013 street rod spectacular. Last year, 163 Street Rods from eight states attended, and they all said they'd be back and bring someone with them. Area attractions include the Bass Pro Shop next door and a huge Sam's Club store just down the street. Restaurants of every description are within two blocks of the hotel. There is a very nice restaurant in the hotel lobby which will be serving a breakfast buffet every day, but if you choose to drive, you will find Ryan's, Logan's Roadhouse, Cracker Barrel, O'Charley's, Los Parillos, El Charro, Shoney's, Waffle House, plus all the fast food regulars, within blocks of the hotel. A huge new outlet mall is now open next door to the Holiday Inn. This new mall will have over 100 outlet stores, most of which will be unique name brand stores not previously available in central Mississippi. The new mall will definitely be an exciting place to shop in future years while attending Dixie Run. Dixie Run kicks off Friday, March 21 with registration at the Holiday Inn beginning at 2 p.m. Then at 6 p.m. across the street at Trustmark Park Stadium, there will be a BBQ supper for early arriving entrants. The best BBQ beef, chicken and sausage you ever ate will be cooked up on our grille on site. MSRA club members will be serving you a full barbeque meal with beans, chips, desserts and drinks. Bring your lawn chair or sit in the spacious stadium. On Saturday, March 22, registration continues at 8 a.m. Across the street games will begin in the stadium paring lot. With the added space the stadium parking lot provides, we will be able to have some driving games, similar to the ones we used to have " back in the day" at the old Holiday Inn location in Jackson, MS.

“Dammit! What in the world is wrong now? The damn engine just quit! It is not getting any gas.” This is what ran through my mind as my car sputtered to a stop as I was entering the Frog Follies in Evansville, Indiana. It was Sunday August 25th, 2013, the third day of the event. I was returning for the final day and envisioning a carefree day with the friends I only see once a year. I was heading up the hill when suddenly the engine quit. It refused to start. I got out, opened the hood, and looked at the fuel filter. There was no gasoline showing in the clear bowl. Crap, I needed a new electric fuel pump! The great thing about car guys and gals, as I have stated many times, is their willingness to help. It is more than just that. It goes beyond that to something even larger. The only way I can think to describe it would be family. I look up and several men have come to my aid. I am stopped going uphill on a fairly steep incline. There are street rods parked on both sides of the street. These benevolent strangers tell me to get into my car and steer while they push me over the hill, and down to my parking spot. I cannot begin to tell you how thankful I was. This made a potentially disgusting situation a little less problematic. Once I was back onto the grass under the trees, a group of people came hustling over to determine the problem. I told them I felt it was the fuel pump and pulled my jack out of the trunk to raise the car. The fuel pump is located on the frame rail. As I was jacking up the car, E. Dale Cassidy was already crawling under the car. It looked like a NASCAR pit stop from years past. He asked for my meter to check out the fuel pump, and determined that was the problem. At this point I still had not put a hand on the fuel pump. Bob Walker along with Richard and Paula Holekamp left the immediate area to secure the necessary tools needed to perform the repair. They had no difficulty obtaining them. E. Dale was still under the car, so he removed the faulty fuel pump and handed it out to me. To make this clear, E. Dale and I had never met. At this point in the story, I still didn’t know his name. I took the faulty fuel pump and rushed up to the vendor’s area hoping to find a replacement.

O’Reilly Auto Parts had a tent in the vendor area. I felt it was unlikely that they would have the fuel pump I needed at their booth, but thought they might have something I could use temporarily to get me home. As I explained my dilemma, I received another act of kindness from the young man at O’Reilly’s. He took the old fuel pump and called one of the Evansville stores to locate a new one. He then sent an employee from the booth to the store to retrieve the part. This kind young man asked me if it would be more convenient for him to call me on my cell phone when it was delivered to the Frog Follies. No need for me to stand around in the heat and wait. Now THAT is customer service with a capital C!! I asked the man for his name so I could praise him to the company, and he said he was just doing his job. He certainly was outstanding at his job in my opinion. I don’t experience this compassion and willingness to accommodate the customer from many retailers anymore. That was common in my past, but has fallen by the wayside in today’s world. I thanked him for his dedication. He called me on my cell and I picked up the new pump and scampered back to the car. We replaced the fuel pump and old Olive fired right up. She ran like a pickle seeder all the way home. Can you imagine how differently this would have played out if I had already been on the road when the fuel pump threw craps? This was the best case scenario. I might have been lying on my back under the street rod on the side of the road with cars and trucks roaring by. Then I would be forced to figure out how to obtain parts. The other alternative would have been to call a wrecker. No, no, this was a blessing on so many levels. I cannot express my gratitude. There are no words in my vocabulary to adequately express how I felt. Simply saying thank you doesn’t cut it. As I am writing this Thanksgiving is yet to come. I will be celebrating and believing that there are no small acts of kindness, but that every single one leaves a ripple with no logical end. As you read this we will be approaching Christmas. I hope you will stop to think about all the friends you have made and their generous nature. A special thank you goes out to my many wonderful friends…the ones I currently have and the ones I have yet to meet. God bless you all. Good friends are like stars. You can’t always see them, but you know they are there.

Jimbo, Money problems act as an accelerant on other problems and issues in our lives. Relationship issues, job issues, and health issues are compounded when you mix in your financial problems. It is the gasoline on the fire. Financial problems poured all over already inflamed financial problems seem to be a growing trend among people I run across everyday. No matter how much you try to hide it and no matter how you try to mask it with more and more stuff, others see your financial strain. Money problems take precedence over most other issues. You might as well get a hold of that situation and learn to eliminate money as being a controlling factor in your life. The leading cause of divorce is money. The number one reason for incarceration in America has to do with money. People are hungry, sick and dying because of the lack of money. Surprisingly it's not the lack of making money it's the lack of financial wisdom. Money management is just as important or more than knowing how to make money. No one should be broke December 26th, but so many people will be well beyond financially insolvent the day after Christmas. I guess it's okay because we can buy that temporary happiness for our children, spouses and loved ones. The Jones' get to try and keep up with us for once. So what if we have to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or bologna until March. We can pay everything off and catch up on all of the bills when the tax refund check get's here. I know you think you deserve all of the new technologies that are coming out, that nice new car, and all of those designer outfits. Maybe your children deserve the best presents and gifts that are out right now. If you haven't worked to build a substantial income, managed well and saved a good portion of your earnings, or haven't been living within your means, you don't deserve it. You and your family don't deserve to fall deeper into financial turmoil because of the commercialization of Christmas. Do the things that are necessary to ensure your family's financial security. I'm not saying be a Scrooge! Find a balance. Find away to really enjoy the Holidays without tapping too deep into your resources that are supposed to build your financial freedom verses take them away. The Christmas vow is to please Jesus not the Jones'…… R. Lewis - www.facebook.com/artphotosgraphics

Hi Jimbo, Teresa and I had the pleasure of attending the 6th Annual Halloween Classic Car Show sponsored by the Houston Mopar Connection Club in Houston, TX. It was held at the National Museum of Funeral History. What a location for a Halloween Car Show. The weather was beautiful as we arrived in our 66 AMC Rambler American. We were soon parked and decorating the American. Vehicles continued to roll in, 180 total attendance, 179 new to me. Being an open show, the entries covered about every known brand and some unknown mighty cool “rat rods”. Just a bunch of exciting rides making eye candy enjoyment…… There was plenty to do along with admiring cars; a haunted house, museum tour, costume contest, arts and crafts, vender’s booths and plenty to eat. The BBQ, done by club members was great! The event had its share of VIP’s in attendance. I spotted Mr. Gary Hamel so I knew his wife would be nearby and she was; working; the “Silent Auction” booth. You may know Gary H. as the Founder and Moderator of the world famous 62-65 Mopar site. He is also quite renown in Houston circles as the Web Administrator for the Houston Mopar Connection Club. I heard during the awards ceremony that some guy named Obama was trying to contact him about fixing/building a web site!! Best thing was I got to chat with him for a few hours ! A great car day in my life…. it’s fun to be with fellow car enthusiasts. A very well organized and run car show. Make plans to attend next year, I am positive you will not be disappointed. The Rambler had a good 1,000 mile run. Link to pictures and 62-65 Mopar site Ollie & Teresa Patterson

First up is a remake of the 70's classic horror flick Carrie. I was a little hesitant about this movie until I saw who was co-starring. Chloe Grace Moretz plays Carrie and Julianne Moore plays here sadistic and twisted mother. It is usually a mistake to try and outdo a classic and they did not try. This is more of a tribute to the original. Chloe was a good choice to play the innocent, social outcast. I have recently noticed this young actor's work and think she will be an 'A-list' player soon. It was fun to watch her transformation from a social outcast to a prom queen who brings the pain to her tormentors. I don't think anyone could top Sissy Spacek's performance, but Ms. Moretz held her own and was believable in the iconic role. Julianne Moore was a perfect choice to reprise the role that Piper Laurie perfected in the first Carrie film. I also enjoyed how director Kimberly Pierce was smart enough to leave all the quirky non-P.C. stuff in that made Stephen King's book true to life for all of us who grew up in the Wild West 1970's. I only have two points of contention with this future classic. The ending was a bit of a letdown compared to the original. I wish they had hired Justin Bieber to reprise John Travolta's breakout bad boy role. It would have been fun to watch Bieber meet his demise through Carrie's prom wrath. I think the entertainment world would be a better place; thank you, Carrie! I give this film 7 out of 10 picks. My second movie was one I was really excited about seeing. About Time is a romantic comedy/drama that was put out by the same production company who gave the world Love Actually. I knew this would be a great date movie, and I took advantage of that fact. I was accompanied by the beautiful Amy Bonnet and her twin sister, Angie. Also along for male backup was my good friend and coast skate legend Mark Tolbert. I was really interested to see how the male viewer reaction would differ from the female interpretation. I will just say this. I think Amy wiped more tears from my face than I'd like to admit. Oh well, it was a great tear-jerker, and I was caught up in the story. This was an interesting story that involves love and that supernatural gift of time travel. This English romp had everyone's favorite female romantic lead, Rachel McAdams. Her co-star was Domhnall Gleeson, playing Rachel's hopeful husband who found out at the age of 21 that he had the gift of time travel. What a perfect tool to make everything right in your love life and get the perfect mate. But all gifts come with a price, and that's what grounded this fanciful tale of romance. My favorite actor, Bill Nighy, plays the time traveler's Pop. Having far more experience as a time traveler than his son, he struggles to tell his him the best way not to abuse this newfound power. With power comes a responsibility, and people can be hurt if you are not careful. The actress, Lydia Wilson, did a wonderful job of playing the carefree sister of our young time traveler, whose life could be changed, either for better or worse, and that emotional pull really made this film work. Director Richard Curtis told this story effectively. The plot moved well and had tons of sweet scenes, but I wish he wouldn't have manipulated the viewer as much near the end. We all knew something sad was coming, but none of us could quite figure out what would happen. This is exactly what makes a great movie. I loved the film and was not disappointed one bit. Maybe this will be the go-to date movie for the new millennium. It worked for me! I give this tale of love, life, and redemption 8 out of 10 picks. Thanks so much for all the response I've been receiving from my readers. This is a bit of a format change for my column. I hope you all like it. "Hi, Santa! Remember me?!" Three years ago, a little boy and his grandmother came to see Santa at our Mall in Dallas. The child climbed up on his lap, holding a picture of a little girl. "Who is this?" asked Santa, Smiling. "Your friend? Your sister?" "Yes, Santa," he replied. "My sister, Sarah , Who is very sick," he said sadly. Santa glanced over at the grandmother who was waiting nearby, and saw her dabbing her eyes with a tissue. "She wanted to come with me to see you, oh, so very much, Santa!" the child exclaimed. "She misses you," he added softly. Santa tried to be cheerful and encouraged a smile to the boy's face, asking him what he wanted Santa to bring him for Christmas. When they finished their visit, the Grandmother came over to help the child off his lap, and started to say something to Santa, but halted. "What is it?" Santa asked warmly. "Well, I know it's really too much to ask you, Santa, but ." The old woman began, shooing her grandson over to one of Santa's elves to collect the little gift which Santa gave all his young visitors. "The girl in the photograph is my granddaughter .. Well, you see ... She has leukemia and isn't expected to make it even through the holidays," She said through tear-filled eyes. "Is there any way, Santa ... Any possible way that you could come see Sarah? That's all she's asked for, for Christmas, is to see Santa." Santa blinked and swallowed hard and told the woman to leave information with his elves as to where Sarah was, and he would see what he could do. Santa thought of little else the rest of that afternoon. He knew what he had to do. "What if it were MY child lying in that hospital bed, dying," he thought with a sinking heart, "this is the least I can do." When Santa finished visiting with all the boys and girls that evening, he retrieved from his helper the name of the hospital where Sarah was staying. He asked the assistant location manager how to get to Children's Hospital. "Why?" Rick asked, with a puzzled look on his face. Santa relayed to him the conversation with Sarah's grandmother earlier that day. "C'mon .... I'll take you there," Rick said softly. Rick drove them to the hospital and came inside with Santa. They found out which room Sarah was in. A pale Rick said he would wait out in the hall. Santa quietly peeked into the room through the half-closed door and saw little Sarah on the bed. The room was full of what appeared to be her family; there was the Grandmother and the girl's brother he had met earlier that day. A woman whom he guessed was Sarah 's mother stood by the bed, gently pushing Sarah 's thin hair off her forehead. And another woman who he discovered later was Sarah 's aunt, sat in a chair near the bed with weary, sad look on her face. They were talking quietly, and Santa could sense the warmth and closeness of the family, and their love and concern for Sarah. Taking a deep breath, and forcing a smile on his face, Santa entered the room, bellowing a hearty, "Ho, ho, ho!" "Santa!" shrieked little Sarah weakly, as she tried to escape her bed to run to him, IV tubes in tact. Santa rushed to her side and gave her a warm hug. A child the tender age of his own son -- 9 years old -- gazed up at him with wonder and excitement. Her skin was pale and her short tresses bore telltale bald patches from the effects of chemotherapy. But all he saw when he looked at her was a pair of huge, blue eyes. His heart melted, and he had to force himself to choke back tears. Though his eyes were riveted upon Sarah 's face, he could hear the gasps and quiet sobbing of the women in the room. As he and Sarah began talking, the family crept quietly to the bedside one by one, squeezing Santa's shoulder or his hand gratefully, whispering "thank you" as they gazed sincerely at him with shining eyes. Santa and Sarah talked and talked, and she told him excitedly all the toys she wanted for Christmas, assuring him she'd been a very good girl that year. As their time together dwindled, Santa felt led in his spirit to pray for Sarah, and asked for permission from the girl's mother.

12

DECEMBER 2013

She nodded in agreement and the entire family circled around Sarah's bed, holding hands. Santa looked intensely at Sarah and asked her if she believed in angels. "Oh, yes, Santa ... I do!" she exclaimed. "Well, I'm going to ask that angels watch over you,!" he said. Laying one hand on the child's head, Santa closed his eyes and prayed. He asked that God touch little Sarah, and heal her body from this disease. He asked that angels minister to her, watch and keep her. And when he finished praying, still with eyes closed, he started singing softly, "Silent Night, Holy Night, all is calm, all is bright." The family joined in, still holding hands, smiling at Sarah, and crying tears of hope, tears of joy for this moment, as Sarah beamed at them all. When the song ended, Santa sat on the side of the bed again and held Sarah's frail, small hands in his own. "Now, Sarah," he said authoritatively, "you have a job to do, and that is to concentrate on getting well. I want you to have fun playing with your friends this summer, and I expect to see you at my house at the Mall this time next year!" He knew it was risky proclaiming that, to this little girl who had terminal cancer, but he "had" to. He had to give her the greatest gift he could -- not dolls or games or toys -- but the gift of HOPE. "Yes, Santa!" Sarah exclaimed, her eyes bright. He leaned down and kissed her on the forehead and left the room. Out in the hall, the minute Santa's eyes met Rick's, a look passed between them and they wept unashamed. Sarah's mother and grandmother slipped out of the room quickly and rushed to Santa's side to thank him. "My only child is the same age as Sarah," he explained quietly. "This is the least I could do." They nodded with understanding and hugged him. One year later, Santa Mark was again back on the set in Dallas for his six-week, seasonal job which he so loves to do. Several weeks went by and then one day a child came up to sit on his lap.

"Hi, Santa! Remember me?!" "Of course, I do," Santa proclaimed (as he always does), smiling down at her. After all, the secret to being a "good" Santa is to always make each child feel as if they are the "only" child in the world at that moment. "You came to see me in the hospital last year!" Santa's jaw dropped. Tears immediately sprang in his eyes, and he grabbed this little miracle and held her to his chest. "Sarah!" he exclaimed. He scarcely recognized her, for her hair was long and silky and her cheeks were rosy -- much different from the little girl he had visited just a year before. He looked over and saw Sarah's mother and grandmother in the sidelines smiling and waving and wiping their eyes. That was the best Christmas ever for Santa Claus. He had witnessed and been blessed to be instrumental in bringing about this miracle of hope. This precious little child was healed. Cancer-free. Alive and well. He silently looked up to Heaven and humbly whispered, "Thank you, Father.” “Tis a very, Merry Christmas!”

Terry Mason’s

It's been busy both at work, with the Hot Rod Show and in my personal life this past month. My plan was to sell the T-Bucket during Cruisin The Coast and order a new show trailer for the Hot Rod Show. Sold the T-Bucket and got the trailer ordered. Now the trailer has been like building a house, 15 pages of details and about 7 hours on the phone with Mike down in Daytona Beach, FL. Mike works for BestPriceTrailers.com and has been super! His attention to detail has been incredible, now if the trailer comes out of the factory that way the second week of January, I will be relieved! The trailer is completely custom to fit my needs with the Hot Rod Show and also be pleasing to the eye. I'll keep you posted on the results. Before I could retire the current Hot Rod Show trailer I had one more show to do…Emerald Coast Cruzin in Panama City Beach, FL. We left on Wednesday morning heading for P.C., as we used to call it growing up. We checked in at the hotel and went over to get set up for Thursday. This year's show was the biggest ever. The new show site was awesome and allows room for growth. This year's Mega 50/50 set an all time record with me, the pot was over $9,800 with the winner taking home over $4,500, all off a $5 ticket. Plus the $10,000 give away to the registered cars is very popular.

DECEMBER 2013

With the show being on Veterans Day weekend we honored the Veterans as we kicked off the show. There must have been 300 or more Veterans that lined up, it made the hair on your arm stand up to be surrounded by such greatness! Great cars from all over the nation were at this year's show. You just can not beat a great car show in such a beautiful location as Panama City Beach, FL! All we did for 4 days was eat, work, eat and sleep. But the eating was good. We ate with a different group and I enjoyed a seafood platter every night from a different restaurant. Coming up Thanksgiving weekend I've got to run the old Hot Rod Show trailer down to Daytona Beach to Mike at BestPriceTrailers.com… The Turkey Rod Run at Daytona International Speedway just happens to be going on that weekend and my brother just happens to be going, so looks like it's all going to work out for the best. Next month I should have a good adventure to talk about and some good photos from the Turkey Rod Run. Did I mention it's been crazy! If I don't get this column finished and over to Jimbo you won't be reading any of this. Enjoy the photos from Emerald Coast Cruzin! Get that Hot Rod out of the garage and turn on the tunes of your day and enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind! Til next month… Terry terrymason@aol.com Facebook: Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show Hear a demo of the Hot Rod Show on Facebook or search for it on YouTube.com

Jimbo, It was 90 degrees in the middle of November. Mom was driving down a dirt road in Menifee California, stereo playing loudly, our car blowing up dust clouds around us as I carefully applied a finishing touch of eyeliner. As we pulled in to Wickerd Farm, we were warmly greeted by my good friend and talented photographer Allen Freeman, as well as Chris Gulyas, a very friendly Navy vet from San Diego, and the owner of the beautiful ’55 DeSoto I would be shooting with that day. So there the fun began, as I clambered beneath a huge oak tree to get dressed. I emerged from the tree in a longsleeved Santa dress made of wool, little sweat beads already beginning to form under my fortress of bangs. Despite the usual but strange autumn heat, I was ready and rearing to shoot this cover! As always when shooting with Allen, things blew by without a hitch, as we laughed and posed and shot away. We were all pretty anxious to escape the heat, though, so we cruised on down the road for some classic diner food and lemon iced tea, once I changed out of the Santa dress, of course! As the four of us sat and chatted over condensating beverages and greasy plates, Chris let us in on a little secret; the truth behind the story of his car. It was immediately clear how much Chris loved his car, so his

story made us laugh that much more, as he first admitted to recently purchasing the car from a Craigslist ad. He went on to tell us about all of the smack-talk he gets from friends at work, being a man with a ‘pink’ car, and the simple story that he came up with to cut himself some slack, as it is apparently much easier to blame the purchase of the car on your young parents from 1955. And that just makes his well-loved little car more adorable. Our uproarious laughter at lunch was cut short by opposing schedules, as Allen and I jetted up to Riverside for a Christmas art walk, but we promised to get together with Chris and shoot again soon. Plenty of amazing Christmas events were coming up in Southern California, and we would surely be running into Chris at some point. My fingers are crossed that I will make the final cut for the Mooneyes Xmas Party Pinup Pageant, having it be my first entrance ever! Christmas spirit is abounding down here, as we continually traipse the streets in our shorts and flip-flops, surfing Santa Claus statues on our lawns, toes in the sand, and margaritas in-hand. Even though we may sometimes wish for a white Christmas, we are secretly stoked for our sunny holiday festivities. By: Rusty Judy Walkman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's greatgreat uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor. On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.' So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle. Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research: "Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed." NOW THAT's how it's done, Folks! Brittany's Project car show at Lirette Ford Morgan City, Louisiana Raising funds for a future facility for those with disabilities

It was a happy day for Bruce and Sandra Saucier twenty-five years ago. They were having a baby! They had no idea that, that baby girl would be special. Brittany was born with a condition called Down's Syndrome. When Sandra learned of this news, she didn't cry, she didn't ask God why, she just accepted it. After all, Brittany is her little girl. Since that day, Sandra and Bruce have been striving to provide Brittany with a good, quality life. Their goal is to help her have as many experiences as a normal child would. In 1992, the family suffered a total loss from hurricane Andrew. They owned a body shop at the time, but the hurricane destroyed their home and business. Bruce and Sandra then moved to Pennsylvania where Bruce found employment and they remained there for three years. In 1996 they transferred with the job to Kentucky. During their time in Kentucky, Brittany was involved with the Special Olympics. Sandra noticed how expensive it was to have a child participate in the Olympics, so she decided to organize car shows to help families pay for those expenses. Sandra had never organized a car show before, but the shows were successful and raised plenty of money to help fund the families. In 2006 the Saucier family moved back to Louisiana to begin work with a family owned business, which Bruce is presently still employed. After being “spoiled” to all of the amenities that were available to Brittany in Kentucky, they came home to virtually nothing in Louisiana. After much thought, Sandra knew what she had to do. It would be her goal to have a facility built to help Brittany and other parents and individuals like Brittany, to have a safe, fun place for others with disabilities to go. She would fulfill that goal by planning fundraisers and of course, car shows. The first Brittany's Project fundraiser was planned for March 2011. A car show was added in March of 2012, held on property owned by the Sauciers in Franklin, Louisiana. A huge success, Sandra and the crew raised over $14,000 for the cause. Sandra met Mr. Wendell Neal with the Southeast Louisiana Mustang club at the March car show. He felt that one Brittany's Project car show wasn't enough and was led to approach Mr. Ronnie Lirette at Lirette Ford in Morgan City, Louisiana. He asked Mr. Lirette if he would host an event at his facility. Mr. Lirette agreed and a second car show was born! The first Lirette Ford show was in September 2012, it raised $11,000. This year marks the second year that the Brittany's Project car shows are held. The third one is set for March 22, 2014. In July 2013, Brittany's Project organized their first summer camp called “Brittany's Special Friends Camp.” It was very successful and there were eleven in attendance. They also offer support and educational seminars through out the year. One facility is the ultimate goal, so everyone won't have to plan and attend different events at several different places. 18

DECEMBER 2013

Also, on January 11, 2014 the first annual Brittany's Project swap meet will be held. Rumor has it, that this will be the biggest swap meet in Louisiana and it is only $10 per space! You can't beat that price folks! So far the Sauciers have raised a total of around $53,000 which is still a little shy of their goal. Please come out and support them at one of their cars shows and the swap meet. I promise you will have a great time and will support a wonderful mission! For more information about Brittany's Project and to volunteer or donate, please go to their website at brittanysproject.org You can also find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ Brittanysproject ~Denise “Neecy” Cobb

ome are in wheel chairs, most are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. Portrait of La Rue – I can’t give last names, for there may be children and others still alive. She would be about 80 now, probably still living in Southern California. She had jet black hair, dark eyes, and a heart stopping figure. She could have been an actress due to her startling beauty. One of her real favorite pleasures was to go dancing, anywhere anytime. It’s the 1950’s after the war, and she liked the Balboa Ball Room in Newport Beach. On Saturday nights when I was running my race car at Long Beach Veterans Memorial Stadium, she and her girl friend, (her name was Stella who we will write about another time) would drive down pacific coast hiway in Stellas car, and go to the dance. I would drive down there after the race. Newport was about 60 or so miles south of Long Beach. I would pick up La Rue and start for the “clock drive in” because that was the “hang out” for hot rods, racers, and great looking car hops. (everyone was great looking from 16 to 26 right?) So on the drive up, her favorite position (while I was driving) was to lay back against the passenger door (1946 Ford Convertible) take off her shoes (heels for dancing) and put her bare feet in my lap. It’s a bit difficult to drive a stick (3 on the tree) with one hand and rub 2 feet in your lap with the other. After the dance, by the time we would get to Long Beach, she would nestle up, kiss my ear, and say lets go to your apartment, I’m tired from dancing, and I want to shower and freshen up! Well of course that's where we went, and after she showered and came into the bedroom with nothing on, but a towel! (that’s another story for another time). Football players that you all like, get concussions from blows to the head. When we were racing in the 40’s (thats 1940’s guys) we first started out with helmet called a ‘Cromwell”. That helmet was heavy cardboard sprayed with resin. (Probably 8 layers 16th thick). Inside they had leather straps like the football helmet you had in high school remember? Our goggles were easy to get at army surplus and probably still are! (flyers goggles) Behind me in the photo, I think that’s a 1940’s Nash. It was 1949 I think at Playland Park in Galveston, Texas. (but that’s another story).

Nobody was running (wings?) in those days, but after that year, the modifieds entry blank said “no bill boards” (meaning in today’s parlance wings) I have only one thing to say about wings – It takes the talent away from the pit crew and driver. You run a “ton” of outside weight, and all it takes is someone to set the toe out, crank in the weight, and hope his right rear tire is big enough to cover the holes or ruts in the dirt. Again that’s just me, but “wings” have destroyed my kind of racing. JASON LEFFLER In closing, I have to mention a great midget race car driver. Died this year 2013. Won features in nationwide NASCAR. He died running those stupid “winged Sprints”. He was USAC National Midget Champion for 3 years. To the best of my knowledge USAC doesn’t run wings period! Well according to articles he jumped into a “Winged Sprint” at some track, caught a hole or a rut and got on his head! Never came out of it! You guys probably could care less, but I’ll tell you anyway 1. When you run a wing you are looking for the easy way out! 2. You have to build a NASA capsule around the driver, or when he hits a big hole or rut he is a gone dude! 3. They should limit wings to the pavement. 4. When you come to dirt without wings you get to find out how good you are! May the wind be always at your back, and your friends be still alive KEEP IT BETWEEN THE FENCES Larry Dunham - 228-671-6216 E-mail: usaclarry@yahoo.com

- Public Welcome -

So, I’m running the race track at Chula Vista, Ca. ½ mile dirt with ¼ track inside using the same strait (chute). I’ve been running a full house 327 in my sons 1969 Camaro stock car (body). Then the big kids come to town and put up money to run “open competition” “run what you bring”. Their ASSOC. put up ½ the purse, and I said bring em on! The 1st photo is Brad my son and I, the (2nd photo) is the “billboards” I made out of it, because we were running my daughters “327” drag engine and it always ran 7600 to 8600 back in 1979 -80. Well, Brad set track records on the ½ mile at Chula Vista, and Corona, both dirt! www.CoastCruizers.com

by: Lynn Makua Mele Kalimaka Hau`oli Makahiki Hou Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Many of my readers said they would like to know how to pronounce Merry Christmas in Hawaiian: Mele – “may-lay” - Kalimaka- “kah-lee-mah-kah” According to Hawaii Magazine the phase is not actually a proper Hawaiian phase. “The Hawaiians had difficulty pronouncing Merry Christmas, and so came up with a phonetic translation that rolled more easily off their tongues”. Happy New Year: Hou`oli – “how-oh-lee” – Makahiki – “mah-kah-hee -kee” - Hou – “ho” In the Hawaiian Language, the word makahiki means year. The Hawaiian word hou`oli means happy, cheerful, joyful. While hou means new in this context. Christmas in Hawaii is in many ways like anywhere else in the world with its own cultural twists and local traditions. See Photo’s of Hawaii at Christmas time. Back to Mississippi: I decided to have lunch at Tri-R-Bar & Grill on Coleman Ave in Bay St. Louis. Robbie makes great hamburger sliders and fries. (they deliver!) Rob the good looking brother runs the bar, just kidding Robbie! Girls, they are both single. Tri-R-Bar is run by the two brothers Rob and Robbie. Their dad is Robert. The dad apparently did oval dirt track racing in the “old days” which was the big thing before TV and such. Larry (Dirttrack Memories) plans on (bench racing) with the dad when he can catch him. Rumor has it that the “Dad” has purchased a home here. I think they are from Hattiesburg. Tony’s Restaurant next to the “Knock Knock Lounge on Hwy 90, is now open for breakfast at 6 am. I plan to try it out. Maybe I can talk them into making a Hawaiian Special Breakfast of Spam, Steam Rice and Eggs? It’s Sunday and Saints are on at noon. So I decided to jump into Precious (1990 300 zx) and head for Sam’s VFW in Clermont Harbor. The bar was full and he had great food as he always does. So, I helped myself and decided to head for the American Legion in Bay St. Louis. As I was headed for the Legion on Lower Bay Road I noticed that “Crickets” was open. As I walked in, and headed for the bar, and I see at least a 20 ft TV screen! The Saints were on. The picture was so clear. Cricket was sitting a one of the tables so I joined him and had a glass of wine. (not my 1st of the day) He said he has had as many as 150 in to see the game. For all you sports fans this is the place to come and see the game, big bar and plenty of tables to sit at. Good food on Saints Day. Cricket has tried a lot of things that are not usually done here. He is attempting to book the “Eagles” (yes the place is big enough) after they do “Biloxi” or somewhere. Check out next month for any new developments. Cricket surprises everybody and gets it done. It’s Friday and time for me to make my rounds. Larry decided to come along (so no Hawaiian music for me) He plugs in Glenn Miller & Harry James ( WWII music). I decided to check out the Blind Tiger on Beach Blvd in Bay St. Louis, MS. A glass of chardonnay wine is $7.00! They serve your wine in a plastic glass. (that looks like a wine glass) If I’m going to pay $7.00 I want a real glass! Tourists may buy this but not us local’s! I now head for Gabbie’s Bar on Main St., Bay St. Louis. They have happy hour 5 days a week. 4 p.m – 6 p.m. 2-4-1 well. It’s time to head for the VFW in BSL and check out our favorite bartender “Bite Me Star”. All the usual suspect were there! Watch next month for some of my old and new places! ALOHA Y’ALL PINEAPPLE

When you’re a car guy that’s what you dream about, and talk about, spend your extra cash on, and if you have the knack you draw them. Mississippi Gulf Coast’s own Vince Hoda has been drawing cars, truck, bikes, race cars, drag cars, fact is if it has wheels or looks fast he is going to put it on paper. for as long as he can remember. “I enjoy doing portraits of peoples Hot Rods and Cars or Trucks. It started awhile back when a friend asked me to draw her husband’s car. She wanted to surprise him with a present for Christmas, and I guess that was the my first paid drawing.” Vince can even take your ideas and incorporate them to create a rendering of your future project. Each of his works is completely hand drawn and colored with no aid of any kind from computer software or digital enhancements. If yo u r interest ed in mo re information about Auto Portraits by Vince Hoda you can e-mail him at vincehoda@gmail.com or check him out on facebook.

Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you. 13. Glibido: All talk and no action. 14. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly. 15. Arachnoleptic Fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web. 16. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out. 17.
