Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo I got a few e-mails with comments about how the shows that some of you attended, registration of participating cars was down, and what could they do to get more people to register. I can’t help but believe that the economy has really caught up to us. Those of us that depend on retirement income find it difficult to travel, eat, spend a night or two in a motel, when the prices of gas, food and household expenses keep going up. Our income has no way of keeping up and as everyone knows jobs are hard to come-by especially if you are over the prime working age. Younger folks are feeling the pinch too. It just cost more to raise a family; and in uncertain times more and more people are just staying home. Gone are the days when we can spend a registration fee, food, travel expenses, etc. every weekend no matter how much we miss going to the event. Today we tend to plan for the “Big Event”, the same way as we did when we were planning the “week of vacation” we got while working. The only other events we attend are usually only a daily round trip and some of us even pack a lunch to help with the cost. www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Now most of the events put on is a way of helping to raise money for a benefit or local charity…. these are tough times for these people too. It’s very hard to keep a positive attitude when you feel your work has very little impact and after all,…”we are all just trying to help” There is no single answer to increasing attendance but taking some of the monetary pressure off the people that do show up, may be one way. A donation is just... that.. A donation usually what I can afford to give away on that particular day. If your event is costing you more than you can afford to spend out of pocket cut back. Increase your hospitality and be engaged with those who attend. Great shows are where people say “I had a really good time.” and the shows that are hurting are the ones people tell their friends that “it cost to much and no-one was there” If you had to choose where would you go? Jimbo Don’t focus on what’s wrong. Things may not be perfect, but be grateful for the opportunity to experience each day. Live each day like it could be your last….. Joel Osteen Jimbo, I came home from the golf course today. The wife had left a note on the fridge: "IT'S NOT WORKING, I can't take it anymore!! Gone to stay with my Mother." I opened the fridge, the light came on, and the beer was cold... What the hell is she talking about? Sent in by: Tstauffer6@ Jimbo, Three old girls and their dogs were sitting on a park bench having a quiet conversation when a flasher approached from across the park. The flasher came up to the ladies, stood right in front of them and opened his trench coat. Gertrude immediately had a stroke. Then Maude also had a stroke. But Tillie, being older and more feeble, couldn't reach that far.

da Swamp Shack In May we had our first dinner cruise and we had a great turn out. We went to Taranto’s in Woolmarket, MS. It was the first time I have every been there. We had several members who had ate there and said it was great and it was. We made arrangements to get a large table in the back room. There were 15 of us so we filled up the long table. The food was great, some of us had seafood, some po-boys and the chicken and sausage Gumbo was great. You got plenty of food to eat and in some cases you had some to take home for lunch the next day. We had one member bring his new ride that he traded for at Burning Up the Beaches. It caught the eye of all of the customers, who had to stop and check it out. We will plan a cruise for each summer month. So members keep in touch and check your e-mail for the next one. If you haven’t been to Taranto’s you need to go once and check the place out. It won’t be the last time because the food is so good. They are listed as John Lee Road, but the door faces Lorraine road / woolmarket road. If you know where the Coalville Methodist church is, it's just down the road about 2 blocks.

Bright Built Hot Rod’s, 1931 Chrysler Model 309 Interview by: John Knight with Derrick Moline, Ryan Miller and Tom Russell

Story and photos by: Denise “Neecy” Cobb From rat rod...to hot rod...to hot wheels toy… The K.K.O.A.’s Lead Sled Spectacular in Salina, Kansas is one show you really want to check out. It’s been over thirty-three years since the first show was born in the eighties. Mr. Jerry Titus is the big man in charge and he strives to make this show better and better every year. During the garage tour in Salina, we came across this one of a kind 1931 Chrysler Model 309 hot rod at the award winning Bright Built Hot Rod shop. After learning of its history, we knew we needed to share it’s story. The guys from Bright Built Hot Rods found and bought the car complete, at an auction and it sat on a trailer for a couple of months, before they decided what to do with it. They first built it as a rusted rat rod. But one day they took it out to a wedding and a woman decided to “park” her Subaru on top of the motor! Yes folks, it really happened! Thank goodness the driver was alright, but not the rat rod! After the accident the guys straightened the frame and built a whole new rear frame with air suspension. The rat rod turned into a hot rod and they kept the original body from the top of the door up, minus the chop. There is also quarter inch roll cage square tubing and quarter inch wall one inch square in all the pillars, to beef up the body to make it more rigid. The hot rod has a 330 Desoto hemi with a 671 blower, three deuces on top and a turbo 350 with an adapter. A Vega steering box was added, and a custom built radiator was installed with the grill shell laid back. The ‘31 was originally a rear leaf spring car so they took the rear springs and moved them forward and put them on the front. The rod has a “72 Chevy pickup rear end with positive traction and two inch spacers. The hot rod’s fuel tank was placed in the rear, the battery is in the console in the dash and it has dual amps. The boys also fabricated a full exhaust with 2 1/2 stainless steel tips and also added extra stainless to them. The added stainless gives it the illusion to look like a bumper guard to fill up the rear end. Notice the fun color of the green flames on the rod. It’s actually a hot wheels, antifreeze green. Another interesting story about this hot rod is that it was in a PPG competition. PPG gave builders eight months to have a completed, painted hot rod and the person or persons that won the

6

July 2014

contest would have their paint scheme featured on a production hot wheels car. Larry Woods who was the chief designer at the time, retired a year after the competition. After he retired, he hosted a "retirement" series which was called the Larry Woods garage series. He chose twenty builds that he liked and out of those twenty, the ’31 was made into a hot wheels production car. The only thing different that they did from the original hot rod is that they turned it into a two door car instead of duplicating the original four door. ~This amazing ride can be seen at Bright Built’s Hot Rod shop in Salina, Kansas at 5680 W Old Hwy 40, 67401, Phone: (785) 823-0022. PIN-UPS:

What You Might Not Know By Candy Cocktail By definition, a pin-up is a poster showing a famous person or sex symbol, meant to be "pinned-up" on a wall. A pinup girl is a model whose pictures were mass-produced in popular culture. These photos are also known as cheesecake photos. The name originated from a male newspaper editor, who while looking at the photos that showed female shapeliness and charm, is believed to have said pin-ups were “better than cheesecake.” Pictures of celebrities like Elvis or James Dean are the male version of cheesecake, appropriately called beefcakes. Pin-ups have seductively carved an important and influential part in our history. Along with other rockabilly fans, I’ve always loved old movies, history, vintage and, of course, pin-ups. Some people are not aware of just how significant pin-ups were in our history, influencing numerous genres. Betty Grable’s famous white swimsuit photo immortalized pinups forever. One of the first super-star American pin-up girls, her poster universally graced the lockers of GIs during World War II. My grandma, like so many others, had that infamous Betty Grable poster on her wall. So of course, she is my biggest pin-up fan. I've always adored the pin-up look, with flowers or scarves on perfectly done hair and swing dresses or pencil skirts. I fell in love with that look when I first saw the movie Grease. I have also always considered myself to be old fashioned. I was raised by a single mother so I spent a lot of time with my grandparents growing up. They have been a huge influence on me and my interests. My time with my grandma was spent sewing, doing crafts and volunteering. My grandfather was like my dad. I grew up watching old movies with him. We watched lots of black and white ones, especially Shirley temple films, which were our favorite following Star Wars. He is still the quintessential gentleman. I love pin-ups because in addition to being an old-fashioned gal, I am not a size 0. I modeled in high school and lacked the perfect figure for main stream modeling. I found my home in pin-up modeling, where I could embrace elegant and vintage stylishness without starving myself. Pin-up represents this for all women. It is about looking attractive and feeling confident at any size or shape. You can still be sexy while dressing classy. Just a peak of stockings on a woman’s thigh gave men heart palpitations. It was about not showing all your cards at one time. Like burlesque, it was about the emphasis on the tease and keeping some things exclusively reserved. I feel that pin-up is the only genre of modeling in the 21st century where women can model with confidence regardless of what they

88

JULY 2014 July 2014

look like. Pin-up is for anyone and everyone. Every girl, or tomboy, deserves to spend a day getting dolled up and letting your inner diva shine. Photographers and studios are currently popping up everywhere for women to get made up as a glamorous pin-up. It is the one genre where women can still embody this tasteful, timeless style. I feel that rockabilly represents a simpler time; an era my dad was a part of. As he would say, life was like the movie American Graffiti, when driving your classic hot rod to the drive-in diner and hanging out with friends talking about girls and cars was what you did on Friday night. I yearn to be a part of that era. Even though the difficulties of World War II were not far away, it was an exciting time of change. European dreamers fled to the United States, war production pulled us out of the Great Depression and women left the home to replace men in the workplace. The world was at peace, the men in uniform were headed home and you could make your dreams come true in America. Everything was changing including the style of cars, homes, clothing and hairstyles. There were also convenient new inventions to simplify life. Everyone was excited about a future that finally had so much promise. Americans were getting indoor plumbing and the GI Bill allowed more men to go to college. The baby boom era is unlike any other in our history! Being an old-fashioned girly girl myself, I would have loved living in that era. To wear a dress every day, take pride as I spent time getting dolled up to go to the soda fountain and meet my sweetheart. Then jive dancing, listening to Elvis and watching my idols Marilyn Monroe, Bridgette Bardot & Mamie Van Doren on the big screen. When flying on an airplane for a vacation was such a splendid occasion complete with the flawless Pan Am stewardesses that passengers dressed in their best. Even though it still had its share of hardships and I would miss our modern-day conveniences (I would certainly mind not having air conditioning), I would choose that time over the stressed out society we live in today. Where family came first, you sat down and had a family dinner without everyone being immersed in cell phone apps and where you never heard of something like a school shooting. Those things just did not exist like they do now. The term pin-up sometimes refers to drawings, paintings and other illustrations done by famous artists like Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas. The creative artwork was similar to the beautiful celebrity posters, but portrayed a more dramatized look of the ideal woman. Today’s most popular pin-up artist is Olivia De Berardinis who is known for her artwork inspired by Playboy Playmates and Bettie Page. It is impossible to discuss pin-ups without mentioning the name Bettie Page. With her signature bangs, she was an icon of the 50s but she is the most popular and recognizable pin-up of today. World War II was deemed the golden age of pin-ups. During this period of time, pin-up artwork became more seductive in the manner in which it was drawn. Pin-up art was universally popular, but retained the most popularity with our military. It covered servicemen’s lockers, the walls of barracks and even the sides of planes.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

The pin-up darlings were such a favorite of our boys in uniform that nine million copies of Esquire men’s magazine featuring pin-up artwork were sent for free to American troops stationed overseas and in US military bases. The magazine’s renowned Vargas girls became so popular with the military from 1942-46, that they were painted as nose art on WWII bomber and fighter planes. The pinup art was viewed as good luck to ensure a plane’s safe return home. For the first time in US Military history, the military unofficially sanctioned this ‘nose art’ as a way of boosting pilot morale. The artists were usually servicemen who drew inspiration from men’s magazines, actresses and real-life models. This art form saw a revival of popularity during the first Gulf War, but was officially banned by the military in 1992 due to complaints from feminist groups.

As the pin-up popularity grew, numerous photographers created pin-up calendars. The photos displayed curvy, perfectly gorgeous women in innocent, yet flirty positions. Showing their legs and cleavage or back, stockings and garters in a coy manner in an array of themes, sometimes appearing to be taken by surprise and with quite an animated facial expression. Common themes like sexy house cleaning, a beauty on a beach, a girl doing yard work, holiday themes or sitting in her bedroom in a risqué negligée and so on. The possibilities were endless. One of my personal favorites was by Jay Scott Pike. His Dog Tied works showed a girl with her dog, possibly tangled in the leash, and oops! Her panties fell down to her ankles.

Another notable pin-up poster was the immortal Rosie the Riveter. This poster helped to influence the workplace for women in generations to come. While men were away during World War II, six million women replaced men working at industrial plants, welding steel and building planes. I am proud to say that, like Rosie, my grandmother worked for Douglas Aircraft during that time. The image of Rosie with her sleeve rolled up and ready to work appeared in magazines, newspapers and posters. The image increased women’s rights, earning power and finally an acceptance into many maledominated trades. Tattoos are another category of today’s pop culture not devoid of a pin-up influence. Pin-up girl tattoos first became popular in the 1890s when men’s magazines featured women as centerfolds. They were popular during the first and second world wars because Marines, Soldiers and military fighters would get this tattoo design before leaving for war as a reminder of what they were fighting for. Sometimes the tattoos resembled their sweetheart, wife or a famous actress or model. Later in the century, the pin-up girl tattoos evolved in that now the pin-ups would be in men’s attire, especially military and naval uniforms. Today pin-up girl tattoos tend to be more revealing than the classic images. Norman Keith Collins, also known as Sailor Jerry, was a prominent American tattoo artist who was famous for his tattooing of sailors. Along with his seafaring tattoos of things like sailors, anchors and nautical stars, his iconic pin-up girl tattoos have continued the Sailor Jerry legacy that is still popular today. His popular pin-up tattoos included hula dancers, geishas, pirates, cowgirls and cute Indians poised in alluring positions. Sailor Jerry Ltd. now produces a 92 proof spiced Navy Caribbean rum that displays the quintessential Sailor Jerry hula girl on the label. The

hula girl became a type of logo because of his life in Hawaii. Much of his pin-up work had Asian influence. As the bottle is emptied, additional Pin-up girls designed by Sailor Jerry are visible on the inner side of the label. With the resurgence of pin-up culture today, thanks to celebrities like Dita Von Teese, Sabina Kelly and Masuimi Max, you can see the pin-up influence everywhere; influences on everything from fashion to music to events and even with artists like Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera. Pin-ups plus rockabilly culture are finally back and gaining popularity. It is a style and look unlike any other. It has already stood the test of time and I believe its popularity will continue for decades to come. I am particularly proud to be a part of the pin-up culture.

The four Holestein (pronounced stine ) brothers, Norman, Lowell, Hiram, and Maxwell, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner on August 26, 1938. The temperature that day in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers strolled into Henry Ford’s office and sweet-talked his secretary into announcing them as gentlemen with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious enough to invite them into his office. They politely refused and asked that he come down to the parking lot to see their car. The Holestein’s persuaded Henry Ford to get into their car which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled off the car immediately. The old man got excited and invited them to his office to discuss his purchase of the patent. The four brothers were offered $2 million for their patent. Hiram, Maxwell, Lowell, and Norman refused that offer and submitted a counter offer of $3 million and recognition. They wanted each car sold with their air conditioning unit to have a plate installed on the instrument panels that read “The Holestein Air Conditioner” . Now Henry Ford was anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to agree to put a Jewish name on a Ford automobile. He refused the deal. They haggled back and forth for about three hours and they finally reached an agreement. He would pay them $4 million and only their first names would be used on the cars that were sold. To this very day, all Ford air conditioners carry a label that says Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max on the controls.

12

July 2014

Control yourself!!! That could be the hole truth! Or not! That is one of the theories of how air conditioning got into cars. There are others. Another theory is that Packard Motor Car Company was the first automobile manufacturer to offer air conditioning units in its cars beginning in 1939. These air conditioners were manufactured by Bishop and Babcock Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The “Bishop and Babcock Weather Conditioner” also incorporated a heater. Cars ordered with the new “Weather Conditioner” were shipped from Packard’s East Grand Boulevard facility to the B&B factory where the conversion was performed. Once complete, the auto was shipped to a local dealer where the customer would take delivery. There were many reasons why this early air conditioner unit was unsuccessful: The main evaporator and blower system took up half of the trunk space. The system was less efficient than those that would follow in the post-war years. It had no thermostat or shut-off mechanism other than switching the blower off. (Cold air would still enter the car with any movement, as the drive belt was continuously connected to the compressor—later systems would use electrically operated clutches to remedy this problem). The several feet of plumbing going back and forth between the engine and trunk proved unreliable. Finally, the system cost $274.00, an enormous amount of money in postdepression/pre-war America. Whatever the true story is, air-conditioning has become popular and is currently included as standard equipment on nearly every modern automobile sold today. It is fun to think back on my youth and remember the trips without this convenience. I was always aware that the faster my father drove, the more air came in the windows into the back seat. Little did I know that there was something more efficient. Gotta Cruise! Cubby

Laura West, featured here in this pristine 1954 Mercury, Laura is former Miss Greensboro USA. A young blonde haired green eyed southern belle in her twenties from North Carolina and she has always loved the oldies. She grew up listening to the oldies introduced to her by parents. She especially took an immediate liking to The King Of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. She has loved and listened to his music ever since she was about 2 years old and still does to this day. Her favorite type of modeling to do is Southern and 50’s & 60’s retro style! She really loves the oldies lifestyle and everything that it encompasses. Her dad even taught her how to drive a stick shift at age sixteen on one of his corvette’s he restored. Laura said, “My father has always loved classic cars too, especially Corvettes. “The Oldies just have a happy-go lucky, warm and fuzzy feel to it, and the music is fantastic, there is nothing like it!”

The King has not left the building! Along with Laura, her loving boyfriend Jake Slater, also shares the same love for all things vintage, oldies music, Elvis, and old classic cars. He also grew up listening to Oldies and Elvis just like she did, in fact he is even a National and International Award Winning Elvis Tribute Artist from Michigan! He has created his own business and it has soared into such a success! They have a very special bond and strong love. Laura quotes, “We like to say Elvis and the music really brought us together!” That’s exactly what happened. “We have several similarities, and whatever differences we may have, they only compliment each other. It’s just a bonus that we both share the love of the Oldies and Elvis, it’s kind of like a cherry on top!” Well, they sure look like a modern day Elvis & Priscilla. In this article you will also see pictures of Jake & Laura, along with a picture of the two of them in front of Graceland as well as at Sun Studio during their trip to Memphis this past October for Laura’s birthday! They are going to Memphis this coming August where Jake will compete in the Elvis Entertainers Network Championships competition! “We both really love helping to keep the Oldies & Elvis’s memory alive! 80th Anniversary In 1932 the international motorsport oversight body did what many Formula One fans wish the FIA would do today: declared that from 1934 there would be no restriction on Grand Prix racecar design beyond having a maximum weight of 750 kilograms (1,650 pounds). That led MercedesBenz to develop the Silberpfeil, the racer that began the Silver Arrows legend, the aluminum-bodied W25. In its first race on June 3, 1934 at the N端rburgring the W25 driven by Manfred von Brauchitsch won the event and set the track record. The day before the race, however, the W25 was painted white, but when it was put on the scales to satisfy the one condition it had to fulfill it weighed 751 kg. The legend is that the solution devised by team manager Alfred Neubauer: grind off all the paint. The aluminum dart with the supercharged 3.4-liter inline-eight-cylinder stayed at or near the front of grand prix racing for the next five years, then continued the trend after World War II, cementing the Silver Arrows legend into racing history. Sunbeam Tiger 50th Anniversary The Sunbeam Tiger turns 50 this year. The Tiger is a highperformance V8 version of the British Rootes Group's Sunbeam Alpine roadster, designed in part by Carroll Shelby and produced from 1964 until 1967. Shelby had carried out a similar V8 conversion on the AC Cobra, and hoped to be offered the contract to produce the Tiger at his facility in America. Rootes decided instead to contract the assembly work to Jensen at West Bromwich in England, and pay Shelby a royalty on every car produced. Two major versions of the Tiger were built: the Series I (1964-67) was fitted with the 260 cu in (4.3 L) Ford V8; the Series II, of which only 633 were built in the final year of Tiger production, was fitted with the larger Ford 289 cu in (4.7 L) engine. Two prototype and extensively modified versions of the Series I competed in the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, but neither completed the race. Production ended in 1967 soon after the Rootes Group was taken over by Chrysler. Dear paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers, if you find one, what's your plan.? I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people. I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out. I changed my car horn to gun shot sounds. People move out of the way much faster now. Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone.? That's common sense leaving your body. I don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom. You can tell a lot about a woman's mood just by her hands. If they are holding a gun, she's probably angry. I didn't make it to the gym again today. That makes five years in a row. I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim‌...I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

MEN JOKES A lot of jokes about blonde females float around the internet but some may be surprised that there is a whole group of jokes about men that many do not see. enjoy this other side of the coin. 'It's just too hot to wear clothes today,' Jack says as he stepped out of the shower. 'Honey, what do you think the neighbors would think if I mowed the lawn like this?' 'Probably that I married you for your money,' she replied. One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his Sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, 'What setting do I use on the washing machine?' 'It depends,' I replied. 'What does it say on your shirt?' He yelled back, ' OHIO STATE !' And they say blondes are dumb‌ Dear Lord, I pray for Wisdom to understand my man; Love to forgive him; and Patience for his moods. Because, Lord, if I pray for Strength, I'll beat him to death. AMEN A couple is lying in bed. The man says, 'I am going to make you the happiest woman in the world...' The woman replies, 'I'll miss you...... '. Q: What do you call an intelligent, good looking, sensitive man? A: A rumor Q: Why do little boys whine? A: They are practicing to be men. Q: What do you call a handcuffed man? A: Trustworthy. Q: What does it mean when a man is in your bed gasping for breath and calling your name? A: You did not hold the pillow down long enough. Q: Why do men whistle when they are sitting on the toilet? A: It helps them remember which end to wipe.. Q: How do you keep your husband from reading your e-mail? A: Rename the email folder 'Instruction Manuals' While creating husbands, God promised women that good and ideal husbands would be found in all corners of the world...............then He made the earth round.

To book DD Thunders Band : ddthunders100@yahoo.com -------it's been a bit of a dry spell lately but I managed to get three movies in without seeing a cape, a mask or a superpower used for evil! I've had a strong desire to see romantic comedies lately but no luck so far. So I just decided to see a comedy, a bio/true story baseball movie and a drama/romance. ------------First up is the crazy comedy from Seth MacFarlane, A Million Ways to Die in the West. This MacFarlane modern-day Blazing Saddles stars An ensemble cast; Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson, Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman and Neil Patrick Harris. This crazy rated R western had me laughing from the get-go. Sure, mostly lowbrow humor, punchlines you can see coming is nothing new, but there's intelligent writing And an original take on a tried-and-true western folk lore. -----------What made this movie so funny is the use of modern thought processes and slang while having the story told in the late 1800s. That is a nice touch and keep flick cruising at a good pace. It was nice to see Charlise Theron back on the big screen. I had forgotten what a great actor she is. She was as funny as any other star in this movie and also could flip her emotions and make it believable At the drop of a hat, a Stetson hat ! ---------This is a good summer film a great way to ease into summer block buster movie over load. I give this movie 7 out of 10 pics.

read more the more. But Things always work out and that is the theme of this movie. The only complaint I have about this film is that it stayed too long on the sadness of the characters conditions and was a bit heavy-handed on the last 30 minutes of the movie. I really enjoyed Willem Dafoe's portrayal of a bitter, alcoholic washed up author Who does not treat the kids well but makes the story very interesting. -------This is a bit of a chick flick? but a well done chick flick. Solid acting and good directing by Mr. Boone, make this a must see for all who want to fall in love, in the maybe lose love the hard way. Make sure you bring plenty of Kleenex! I will give this drama romance 8 out of 10 pics ------- I had a lot of good email responses from last month's column. Keep those emails coming bad or good to ddthunders100@yahoo.com and I will see you at the matinee. DD’s music reflects many years of experience from many walks of life. An accomplished guitarist and a natural showman, DD's knack for improvisation lends itself to a unique experience that never repeats itself. From his early years as frontman of the seminal skate rock band No Rules, recording contracts and touring provides a stylized presentation of many styles of music. His love of rockabilly, jazz, swing, country, standards, punk, americana provides a broad canvas that is constantly evolving.

--------Next up is another perfect theme movie for summer, a baseball movie titled Million Dollar Arm. This true story stars Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Suraj Sharma, Bar Paly, Lake Bell and Alan Arkin. -------This is a true story is about a down and out sports agent who has a crazy idea of going to India to export the first professional baseball player from the country. -------This Disney PG treatment was a bit light on content. There was a bit of on-screen chemistry between Jon Hamm's character and Lake Bell The story lite and airy. I'm a big Fan of Alan Arkin and he didn't disappoint in this time around a gruff old baseball talent scout that has seen better days but still has enough experience to help pick out the first professional ball players to come this unlikely part of the world. -------Plenty of culture clash, language barriers slows Hamm' character down but doesn't stop him. His characters tactics are viewed as a gimmick but the results cannot be argued with. Within a year he was able to find two young men that had never picked up a baseball and have them try out for major-league team. You have to see the movie to find out what happens at the end. I also really enjoyed the actual footage of the pro ballplayers from India while the credits were rolling, pretty cool stuff. ------This is a decent summer movie and a good family movie, I give it 6 out of 10 pics. ------And finally here is a romance movie, kind of a romance movie called, The Fault with our Stars. The story is based on a novel by John Green and is well directed by Josh Boone. ------It stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Nat Wolff, Laura Dern and Wilem Defoe. This movie is about terminally ill teenagers and young adults and how they handle their situation. I have always liked Shailene Woodley's work and was not disappointed with her performance. She plays a young lady that knows she will die soon but wants to live her life her way. She falls in love with another terminally ill teenager and they set off on an adventure, a lifechanging event. They travel to Europe to find the young ladies favorite author And asking questions about her favorite book she is

Atlanta is an exciting place to be, especially if you’re going to a car show! We headed out at 7am on Friday morning June 6, for the 3rd Annual Streetside Classics Charity Car Show. Four hundred miles… but we were not in a hurry. You lose an hour when you hit the Eastern Time Zone and we pulled into a suburb just outside Atlanta, a little after 4 pm. Normally I go to the car show site, get the trailer in the spot we’ll be using, drop the trailer and get the basic setup ready. This show being in an industrial setting didn’t offer a secure place to leave the Hot Rod Show trailer so we just headed straight for the hotel with the trailer. Not wanting to haul the trailer around, we just checked in and ordered pizza in our room. It was a very nice hotel; Scotty and I just enjoyed a quiet evening. The next morning after breakfast, we arrived at Streetside Classics a little after 7am in Lithia Springs. There were vendors and the Streetside Classics guys setting up tents and booths and getting ready for the show. We pulled into our spot and start setting up. We hadn’t been there ten minutes or so and they start opening up these garage doors spaced about every 10 feet or so down this gigantic warehouse. What I saw took my breath away. I knew that Streetside Classics was a huge Internet seller of classic cars… they have thousands on sale online. I knew they had offices in Atlanta, Charlotte and Dallas, but what I didn’t know is that they had what looked to me like a thousand cars inside this location. I figured they would have twenty to thirty there, not rows after rows after rows of classic cars. They grouped them together by style…57 Chevys, then 55 Chevys, the Mustangs, the Camaros, the Corvettes, the Bonnie and Clyde cars (I call them), The 30’s Fords, the 40’s Fords, the Super Cars, the Muscle Cars, Foreign jobs and the different years and models of trucks. Like looking at the ten 55 Chevys, you had a selection to look at, different styles, colors and prices. I told the guys working there they needed to hand out bibs when you came in for all the drooling you do when you see the cars! It simply took my breath away before the car show cars even got there. I thought … wow we have a car show just opening up these 20 roll up doors. It was amazing, a car show inside a car show. The weather was rainy when we arrived, but the forecast called for it to move out quick. The show cars started arriving a little later than they should have, but by 10am we were starting to fill up the 350 car area and the remaining cars had to go to the overflow lot in the rear. The back lot could hold about another 150 cars. Once the show fills up at 500, the remaining cars have to be turned away. Last year they said about a 150 were turned away. This year because of the weather being nasty early, they were off just a little. The day turned out to be beautiful, not a cloud in the sky and hot. Luckily there were shade trees on the perimeter so between the ease-up pop ups and the shade trees it was a great day. All the car show people got to walk around and check out all the cars for sale inside. Plus it was cool inside. If you saw something you liked better than what you were driving you could work out a deal with Streetside www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Classics. During the car show any participant that wanted Streetside Classics to sell their car, Streetside would waive the $150 consignment fee. Something else that made this car show unique was Streetside Classics ate all the expenses of the show. Every penny that was collected went straight to charity at the end of the show. Even the registration fee for the show was simply a donation. All except the Mega 50/50 which was over $1,800, half of it went home with the winner. The show gave out very nice and unique trophies also, they were like shields, very nicely done. Sreetside Classics is the nation’s top consignment dealer of classic cars. If you’re looking to buy, sell or trade, you can check them out at streetsideclassics.com…top notch folks to do business with. We got loaded up and made it back to the hotel in time to watch California Chrome make a run at the Triple Crown in horse racing… you all know how that worked out. We had a good meal and a good night’s sleep. We woke up early Sunday morning, ate a big breakfast buffet and we were back on the road for Mississippi by 7:30 am. We arrived home a little after 2 pm and spent an hour and a half at the car wash getting the Hot Rod Show trailer cleaned up and then put away in storage. After getting the bags unpacked, all the stuff put away and taking the truck to the car wash to get it cleaned up, it was back home to write the column. As I sit here on Sunday night thinking about what a good trip and car show it was and writing the column, I wonder about our next adventure… Paris, TN and The OverDrive Car show in August. What little I’ve heard about the show has been good and I know it will be another adventure. It’s never too late to get that Hot Rod out of the garage and get on the road to your next great adventure, plan it tonight and enjoy that 17 FOREVER state of mind! Til next month…

Criuse-in July 4 Pumkinvine Pike Thinking of the early automobile, you likely picture Henry Ford, the Model T, and Detroit, but did you know that Indiana was one of the leaders in Automobile production until the 1930’s when Detroit emerged as the nation’s technological and industrial giant?
