We’re not called to straighten everyone out. They may be wrong, and you know you’re right, but if you win the argument you have to ask yourself, “What is that going to accomplish?” Is it going to move you forward or is it just going to make you feel good? You may win, but in the big picture it’s taking your time and energy, focus that you should be using for your dreams. We fight too many battles that don’t matter. If that battle is not between you and your destiny, then it’s a distraction.…… Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo It’s July and it seems like we were just complaining about the cold weather and now it’s HOT… car shows, cruise-ins, events at the track all suffer the same fate during the July & August months, hot and wet afternoons. Seems like it is always on the weekends too. Guess that’s the price we pay for living in the South. July 27th & 28th will be the 8th Annual Red Creek Classic Car Appreciation Picnic Cruise-in & Swap Meet at the Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins, MS. This will be the first year for the swap meet so here’s your chance to buy/sell or trade some of your treasures for somebody-else's and with Cruisin’ the Coast just around the corner you just might find that one thing to finish up your project. If you haven’t been to this “Everybody is Welcome” picnic try and make time to attend. Lot’s to eat and plenty of shade for everyone. Even an air-conditioned building if you need to get out of the heat. Guess there was about 300 cars/trucks last year, so there is plenty to see and do. The Red Creek Classic Car Club does a excellent job of organizing and hosting this annual picnic. The NSRA will be on site to sign up new members and if you are already a member show your membership card to get a NSRA Appreciation day pin. Some Email Jimbo, I would like to thank all the participants that attended the 11th Annual Blueberry Jubilee Car/Truck/Bike Show. I think is was very successful. I very much enjoy seeing and visiting with you and I really appreciate your support. I would also like to thank Gulf coast MotorSports Magazine, Icruise.com, oldrides.com and rockauto.com for their continued support in promoting this event. … Jeff Westfall Jimbo, Have you heard of Murphy’s law? “Yeah” What is it? “if something can go wrong, it will go wrong.” Right. Jimbo, Boudreaux and Marie were in a terrible accident which cause Marie's face to get severely burned. The doctor told Boudreaux that they couldn't graft any skin from her body because she was too skinny. So Boudreaux offered to donate some of his own skin. However, the only skin on his body that the doctor felt was suitable would have to come from his rear end. Boudreaux and Marie agreed that they would tell no one about where the skin came from, and requested that the doctor also honor their secret. After all, this was a very delicate matter. After the surgery was completed, everyone was astounded at Marie's new beauty. She looked more beautiful than she ever had before! All her friends and relatives just went on and on about her youthful beauty! One day, she was alone with Boudreaux, and she was overcome with emotion at his sacrifice. She said, "Mon cher, I jus' want to tank you for evryting you dun did for me. How can I possibly ever repay you?" "Oh mon cher," he replied, "I get all the tanks I need every time I see you momma kiss you on da cheek."

Deep Thoughts

When two airplanes almost collide, why do they call it a near miss? It sounds like a near hit to me!

6721 Klein Cemetery Rd. Spring, TX. 77379 Phone: 281 376-5932 or 866-400-3411 LAP NUMBER SIX Rumblings & Ramblings Yesterday at church, my pastor was speaking about the children of Israel and the city of Jericho. (Joshua 6:1-27) In this passage, Joshua is called to lead his people in the march around the city of Jericho. For six days they marched around the city walls. As God commanded, on the seventh day they marched seven times around. With the blasts of their horns, and the mighty shouts of the people, the walls came down! The question I have. What if they had given up at lap number six? Surely there was someone who said “this is stupid!”, or “my feet hurt!”, but they didn’t. They persevered. With building cars for a living, I see “white flag” projects all the time. Some have waved the white flag because of money, family, or they have reached their skill limit. The saddest is, the lack of desire to keep moving forward. One of the points in my Pastor’s message was, their are two “white flags”. One is the international sign of surrender. The other is used in racing, as a signal to the driver that they are on the last lap. Too many people these days use the wrong flag. Unfortunately, it’s become too easy to raise the white flag, instead of waiting for the white flag to be waived. Building a car can easily become a long term project. As in anything long term, it takes perseverance to see it through. Perseverance to finish that car. Perseverance to loose that last five pounds. Or even, perseverance to save your marriage. Today. I challenge you. Keep looking for that flag man. You never know. You might be coming up on lap six.

By: Joyce Lachaussee ME TOO! I guess if you have turned on your TV in the last six months, I'm sure you've heard of the "me too" movement that's been going around. Well, did you know there is a "me too" push at the Lucedale Hardee's car breakfast?? Yep, that's right there are some women at the Lucedale Hardee's breakfast that will tell you right away they are part of the "me too" movement. Except this "me too" movement is more benign that the one you hear about on TV. This "me too" is strictly about cars. For instance Amy Cross of Wilmer, Alabama made her "me too" statement with this 1937 Hudson Terraplane. Amy was quick to tell me it was her car and not Ronnie's! Amy came by this car through a series of events. She won a 1950 Ford at Celebrations in Tillman's Corner (Holiday Inn). At that time, the car shows she and Ronnie were attending required vehicles to be 1949 or earlier in order to compete so she couldn't show her '50. She made a deal with Pete Bice of Gulfport for a swap for the Hudson and the rest is history. The original color was gray. Her first paint job was black primer with pink fenders and according to Amy, she got lot's of attention on the Interstate. The white with orange flames is the latest color scheme and can you guess who Amy got to paint the car?? Amy tells me she had some basic car knowledge but has learned so much from her partner, Ronnie Legg. She said the Hudson runs great and she loves to cruise the Interstate. Have fun cruisin' Amy.

Kelly Massey is pictured here by her and Frank's 1949 Ford Truck. This is a new restoration and it looks really great. Trudy Carney is a "me too" girl but left before the photos were taken. She and Harold have several fine cars that she has been a part of the hobby since the beginning. The pretty red T-Bird is mine and while I love it, this writer will tell you quickly my "me too" movement depends entirely on my husband, Mike's expertise. I suspect the rest of the "me too's" I have mentioned will tell you they came to love this sport because of their significant others passion for the hobby. It's a great hobby to share with someone who you care about and has the same love for cars.

This month's turnout was great with over 40 cars, trucks and motorcycles. The swap meet saw some pretty good deals being made. Come join us at Hardee's in Lucedale every second Friday of the month beginning at 7:30 til'.

SWAP MEET HELD ON THE BACK PARKING LOT OF HARDEE'S IN LUCEDALE.

ONLY CAR ITEMS WILL BE ALLOWED AT THIS MEET.

Kathryn Howard is pictured here in front of a 1952 Dodge Truck owned by Mike Lachaussee. Normally Kathryn would be in one of her and Melvin's cars but today she graciously posed by the Dodge.

Top Ten Classic Car Care Tips Late night infomercials try to convince us that there are miracle cures and magic polymers that can fix any paint scratch or keep our engines purring like new. The truth is that all the quick-fix gimmicks and specially formulated car care products in the world won’t be the reason your classic car or truck continues to run well and look great. It is regularly scheduled, proper care and maintenance that older, high sixfigure mileage vehicles require. The secret to keeping your classic running and looking great is as simple as following a regularly scheduled maintenance routine and using the manufacturer’s recommended motor oil and fluids. This in conjunction with replacing parts that become compromised from wear and tear, like spark plugs and engine belts, is what will make a real difference. Here are 10 maintenance tips that you can follow to help keep your classic car or truck in tip top shape: 1. Change the oil. Nothing will destroy a motor quicker that old or low oil levels. On the other hand, nothing will keep a motor running smoothly than regular oil and oil filter changes. It is the life blood of every motor and should be a number one priority to check and change regularly. 2. Flush the cooling system. At least once a year every car, whether old or new, should have its cooling system flushed out. Replace the old coolant with a fresh 50/50 mixture of coolant and distilled water to help prevent the system from corroding or developing any deposits that can restrict flow through the system. 3. Change transmission fluid and differential oil. This may not have to be done frequently, but it the more often you can do this the better. Newer cars require it at their service intervals, but classics could really use this a little more regularly. Make sure to use the recommended transmission fluid and gear oil with the correct viscosity. 4. Keep it clean. Washing your car regularly will help to ensure you are removing any harmful impurities that will eventually eat away at your paint’s finish. Don’t forget about the undercarriage as well. Salt and road grime are really good at finding their way into every nook and cranny. Be sure to clean the underside of your car really well to help all the exposed parts clean and corrosion free. 5. Wax on wax off. Wax is crucial in keeping the paint looking its best. You should give your classic a really good waxing at least once every six months. While you are at it, you should also apply some chrome care to the chrome trim to help keep it shining. 6. Protect the interior. Keeping your classic out of the sun is one of the best ways to protect the leather, vinyl and plastic in your interior from fading and drying out. There are also leather creams, vinyl treatments, and UV blockers that can also help to protect and preserve your classic car interior. 7. Check your ball joints. All too often we see ball joints fail before their time should be up. Regularly checking them to ensure they are packed with the grease they need is all you need to do. A dry ball joint will surely fail quickly while a well-greased joint can last a lifetime. 8. Lube your drive-line. Many components of your drive-line, like the u-joints, require regular lubrication as well. Checking to see that everything looks greased well can save you a lot of money and frustration should any part of your drive-line need to be replaced. You may need to remove the drive-line to get to the grease fitting depending on your vehicle. 9. Repack your wheel bearings. You should regularly inspect, clean and repack your wheel bearings with the recommended grease. This might not be the quickest job in the world, but it is cheap to do. You will save yourself tons of money on pricey repairs down the road. It doesn’t need to be done monthly, but you should certainly do it at your regularly scheduled major service intervals. 10. Pump the brakes. Regularly test your brakes to make sure everything feels right and isn’t making any strange sounds. Bleed your brake system at least once per year. It is cheap to replace while calipers, hoses and sensors are not. It is also a good idea to keep a close eye on your brake pads to ensure they are not unevenly wearing down your rotors. Pads are another relatively inexpensive item to replace. From the June MCC Newsletter

I now had 5 trucks housed in and around the carriage house, so the next logical thing to do was to part ways with some of them. The longer they stayed around here the more it seems I had to fix. I could not in good conscience sell something knowingly in complete disrepair. The first project I bought needed the charging system fixed, also it had no keys to the doors. First I got the alternator repaired, next up order new lock cylinders and matching keys for the doors. Then clean it out of all of the stuff the previous owner had left in it. And clean out the bed of leaves and trash as well. Also fix a few tires that would not hold air for longer than a week. It also had a leaky transmission that was not really a problem to fix. It also had a radiator that needed a good flushing as well. So after all of those needed repairs I decided it would be ready to sell. The other minor issues would need to be taken care of by the new owner. It sold rather quickly. The next jewel was in pretty decent shape when I drove it home. The interior was in fair shape, however, it did have one window that had apparently jumped its track, I discovered this as I was driving it one evening. That needed to be fixed and as soon as the cold weather settled it, the battery decided to fail. So as soon as I could I repaired the issue with the window and bought a new battery. I figured, the longer I kept this one around the more things would go wrong and I would have to fix. Again this one was sold rather quick as well. Both of these were never driven much as soon as I bought the 90 SS 454. So now the carriage house was down to just housing, the Big Truck Project, the latest addition to the tribe, the 90 SS 454 pickup, and my daily driver, which lives under the carport side. I still have the big block at the machine shop, and of course the 72 Superglide that desperately needs to be finished. The Queen is happy that all of the future projects have disappeared and I am down to the one Big Truck Project. It has been an interesting first several months to this year to say the least. Got to go somebody just messaged me about another…….. nevermind. Have a safe 4th of July, and Happy 242nd Birthday to these United States. Later Gizmo

“I want to go to this show” said Jim…..”What show and where?” I reply in my “not really listening tone”….”New Iberia, Louisiana”…… Oh! The heart of Cajun country! Never been!!!!! This will be exciting and a great adventure. It was our anniversary weekend so I thought this would be a special treat! Wow, was I ever surprised! Can't begin to describe the true southern Cajun hospitality in that area! I have always wanted to head down that way especially to Avery Island, home of the famous TABASCO seasoning. Hum….strange coming from me….I can't stand black pepper on my food!!!!!! We head out on Wednesday morning and meet with some of the Misfits in Slidell for breakfast. Head straight towards New Orleans and then due south via Hwy 90….great ride on some back country roads. Lots and lots and lots of sugar cane and rice fields . Can't say too much for the roads in that area…….my poor eyes are still black from the “girls” bouncing up and down (we were in the 29' and she does not have the best shocks)….. Arrive at the host hotel, The Ramada Inn just minutes from Avery Island….I can smell the Tabasco in the air….my nose still burns ! ha… The Cruisin Cajun Country group met us with a warm hug and a huge smile. I am telling you, the hospitality is over the top! And the homemade pralines are to die for! We check in to our newly renovated room and began our adventure. The Cajun country gang tells us about an “early bird” dinner at The Boiling Point (remember what I said about the pepper!) for a full blown Cajun crawfish/crab pickin' dinner. Since that is not my style, I opted for a bowl of Cajun gumbo…remember the pepper thing! Whew! I was sweating like I was in full blown menopause and I just turned 70!!!!!!! But, with a loaf of French bread, I ate spoon by spoon until it was all gone and must admit it was wonderful…..lots and lots of “hello-s…how are you….welcome…nice to see ya and thanks for coming”……...told ya about the great hospitality!! Several locals stopped to say hello and tell us about some great eatin' places which we hoped to try. Thursday had a big agenda with lots to see and do….we went to visit Vermilionville Living History and Folk Life Park and then off to eat again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We went to Pont Breaux's Cajun restaurant in Beaux Bridge for some real Cajun food…….spicy good and still sweating!!! Took some back roads thru town and decided to stop at a local favorite we heard about….DUFFIE'S….man! an old fashioned diner with the best chocolate milkshake I have had in a long time! Needed the ice cream to cool off the taste buds!! This is a great 50's diner with lots of Elvis and childhood memories….definitely a stopper when on the road and a must see… Friday took us to Avery Island….what a treat! A must see when in that neck of the woods…..we decided to eat at the restaurant on the premises and tried to “sampler” of gumbo...red beans & rice… jambalaya..Whew! Jim and I had had to split that one! Oh….also had to have a boudin biscuit…..WHOA! Thinking I had a regular Pillsbury biscuit with a sausage patti coming, I said “give me one of those!”….Holly mother of heaven! She took a WHOLE LINK OF BOUDIN, peeled of the cover, rolled it in a round ball and slapped it on that biscuit with some pepper jelly…I swear it stood 2 feet tall and weighed as much as my 1st child!!!!! Chased that baby down with a Tabasco bloody mary (had to try it!) and drank 4 glasses of water in 2 minutes!!!!....then we went into the Tabasco store to shop and back to Duffie's for a milkshake. Saturday was a full day of poker runs, car shows and lots to do. Never a dull minute with this Cajun crew……..the banquet on Saturday nite was great (they fed us there also) with live auctions, music, and awards. Can' t say enough about this show or the great folks that played host…it is a must go for anyone loving good Cajun food and great southern people…They treat everyone like family and make sure you eat, drink and have lots of fun. Jim and I will be back next year and hope you join us…..well worth a trip “down south”…you may see me “pop one of those peppers “next year!!! … Nancy Perkins

A very big Thank You to the Iberia Parish Sheriff Deputy’s for helping plan for a safe event.

Cruisin’ Cajun Country just those three words should grab your attention, I know it got mine. This was the year I was going to attend the 10th annual Cruizin’ Cajun Country in New Iberia, LA. From the first minute I got there I knew I was in for a good time. Hospitality, good food, lot’s of fun times were on the menu at this event. We left Gulfport early Wednesday morning in the ’29 heading for Cajun country. We caught up with some of the Misfits in Slidell, LA. and joined them for a bite to eat and followed them to the Ramada Inn, the host hotel I wanted to get there early to check in and make it to the earlybird dinner at the Boiling Point Restaurant that evening. Take my advice and make sure you go there if you like authentic Cajun food. Thursday & Friday mornings you could choose from guided road trips to Abbeville, LA or Lafayette, LA to special interest locations. Followed by great lunch stops. We ended up at a Cajun Buffet at Pont Breaux’s Cajun Restaurant in Breaux Bridge, LA Thursday evening there was the opening ceremonies and kick off party at JP Thibodeaux Car Dealership and they even had a BBQ for all the registered guests. Friday there was a poker run through St. Martin Parish. Or maybe you would choose the air boat swamp tour. Nancy and I went to Avery Island to check out where the Tabasco sauce is made. Friday night there was a Cruizin’ Cajun Country 10th Anniversary sit-down dinner celebration at the Ramada Ballroom. Dancing to a live band, special awards handed out followed by a auction. Saturday we found our way to Sugar Mill Pond in Youngsville, LA. And Saturday night there was the parade through downtown New Iberia ending up at Bouligny Plaza for a Fais-do-do and more food. There was so much to see and do I’ll have to come back next year just to go to all the places I missed out on. Maybe I’ll see you there. By the way the best milkshakes and icecream Sundays are at “Duffy’s Diner” Jimbo

Jimbo, I just don't know how this event has been going on for ten years and me and Teresa have been missing it. Thanks to you and the MotorSports magazine we will be attending every year from now on !! We had a fantastic time at this great venue. I know they will have to change up a few things next year as they were a bit overloaded with vehicles this year. I have no doubt that the Club is up to the challenge. One of the Poker Run Stops was in Parks, Louisiana. I had lived in Parks, Louisiana for about ten years during my offshore working career. The Car Show at Evangeline Park in St. Martinsville was only six miles from Parks. The Good Lord blessed our day at Evangeline Park. My God Daughter came to visit us with her hubby and their three sons. I also met up with another friend that I had not seen in a very long time. Roger and his wife were attending the event and we hooked up for the remainder of the weekend. It was as if it was meant to be !!!!!! Already making plans for next year. Ollie & Teresa Patterson Brandon, MS This show is awesome some of the most friendliest and wonderful people you will ever want to meet some whom have become good friends, Sending our thanks for another great show. … Faye Warren

June 9, 2018 By: “Dixie” Spurlock It was a gorgeous summer day for June’s Texoma Cars & Coffee meet up. Cars and motorcycles lined both sides of Main Street in front of Main Street Motors and spilled over into the parking lot at the corner of Main Street and South Mirick Streets. Coffee from CJ’s Coffee Cafe fuelled car talk through the morning as new friends mingled and joined in the fun. Just a few of the cars of note were Rob Diver’s 1958 Solyto mini-car by French motorcycle manufacturer New Map, from Lyon, France, and a fully-restored Morris Minor. This month I had the chance to spend a delightful few minutes speaking with Mr. Stan Opie about his 2001 Corvette C5, which he brought to Texoma Cars and Coffee for the first time.

“I haven’t put any work into it (yet). I bought it like it is now. But the car was… It’s a 2001. The gentleman that bought the car originally really wanted a Z06, but he didn’t like the fact the roof doesn’t come out of the Z06, it’s a hard body roof. So, he bought this and started making a Z06 out of it. So, it’s got the Z06 wheels. He did a bunch of work to the engine; he did the throttle body, ported and polished, put a cam in it, headers -- it has ceramic headers, X-pipes, and Corsa Exhaust. So, while it’s not real invasive with the sound, when you jump on it, it clears its throat, and that’s really when it really starts talking. But it probably has about 470horse. It’s on the mild side but runs beautifully; runs like a dream. He had it completely repainted with a darker navy.

This car was a blue, but he didn’t quite like the way it was, so this paint job is probably about 14-years old. So, it’s been taken care of well. The car only has 53,000 miles on it. So, he put a real nice stereo and the Sirius radio equipment in it. It has a LoJack in it. Really did a nice job and there’s probably a few things here and there I will do to it as time goes by. I intent to just keep it as kind of a weekender. I’ve only put 400 miles on it in a year and a half, so I don’t drive it very much.” Mr. Opie recently took First Place for C5’s at the Gazebo Burger Plano Muscle Car Show, a show which he had not originally intended to attend. “At the last minute I did. I didn’t have any intention of entering the show for the contest. Some guy said, “Why don’t you bring your car and park in here. It’s just $10.” “I said, ‘Okay.’” “So, I did that. I ended up winning First Place for All of the C5’s, so it was kind of fun.” However, when it comes to entering other shows, Mr. Opie said, “I probably wouldn’t (take it to other shows) because it’s not that. It’s not what I would term a ‘true show car.’ A true show car you wrap it up and you put it into a trailer and you take it, you know, that way. I’ll drive this to

various shows. So, I’ll go down to different shows down here in the Plano, and Wiley, and the McKinney-Frisco area.” “So, you know I know cars pretty well and I’ve seen a lot of really gorgeous automobiles that I wouldn’t even put my car in their class because this doesn’t have that many things that were done to it. It’s just a really great middle of the road car from my opinion. But, I had a lot of people really lookin’ at it. They loved it.” When it comes to keeping up his C5, Mr. Opie is meticulous. “It’s already gotten dusty and I drove up here in bugs and whatnot from McKinney, so it actually could be cleaned and detailed again, but it’s got, I guess, something around 11 coats of Auto Magic detailing wax on it right now, so it’s easy to keep clean. I’m on it with a rag about twice a week. I have to. The dust we have in our area is just oppressive. It’s just oppressive. Anyway, that’s what it is. Just a real nice car. It’s never been in the rain. It’s like a protected little child. It’s never even been to a carwash. I hand wash this like a mom does a baby. It’s all hand wash.” Texoma Cars & Coffee Texoma Cars & Coffee is the second Saturday of each month from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM along Main Street in front of Main Street Motors in Denison, Texas.

The 29th Annual Texoma Vintage & Classic Car Club's Car & Truck Show By “Dixie” Spurlock The parking lot of the Denison Middle School was filled to bursting with cars and trucks for the 29th Annual Texoma Vintage & Classic Car Club Car & Truck Show. The sun was brutal, but there was a cool breeze, plenty of shade, and delicious BBQ to be had. This year’s Best in Show was none other than Texoma Cars & Coffee regular Aimee Freise with her VW Bug, Layla. Aimee completed all of the mechanical work on Layla, with the paint and powder coat completed by Dirty Dream Speed & Kustomz. Even the quilt shown with Layla was handmade by Aimee! Among the other participants in the show were Jim and Jackie Gary with their 1955 Chevy Bel-Air. Their beautifully restored Bel-Air has 355 Roller Wayne Calvert Engine, a Tremec and TKO 600 5 Speed. The flawless restoration of the body was a team effort with the color applied by Wisdom Body Shop of Mesquite, Texas, the chrome by North Texas Quality Chrome of Gainesville, Texas, and the Pinstriping by James Crawford of Garland, Texas. The Gary’s are multi-year participants of Cruisin’ the Coast. The badges for just a few of the many car shows the Gary’s have attended lined the back window of their Bel-Air, with a Cruisin’ the Coast, Ocean Springs, Mississippi, pillow in the backseat as a souvenir of their many adventures on the coast. At the center of the show (parked in the same spot where it took Best of Show) for its 10th Anniversary Best in Show appearance, was the 1987 Chevy Corvette owned by Dr. Buddy Merrick. Not only is the car number 13 of the 13 Rick Mears Special Edition bodies produced, the interior has been completely customized. The floorboards, dash, and pedals are all rosewood, the seats leather with embroidered roses, the door panels are rosewood (competed by Don Bartholomew) with crocodile leather arm rests and custom embroidered roses, and a rosewood steering wheel. Dr. Merrick’s grandson, Wyatt Adams, said it took 6-weeks to get the Corvette they call “Rosewood” fully detailed, including the custom mirrors mounted to the inside of the hood. Rosewood is fullychromed, including the brake rotors and undercarriage, was well as the seats, armrests, and support brackets being covered in 13 hides worth of custom dyed leather. Here’s looking forward to another amazing show next year!

HOOD ORNAMENT HISTORY Report by: John Lunstrum In the earliest days of the automobile, shortly after man created the first steering wheel, every car had a radiator cap that was located at the very front of the hood, actually, since the earliest cars had hoods that opened on either side, rather than one single hood that opened from the front. Radiator caps had protruding thermometers that let the driver know when his car was in danger of overheating, but these went away once the temperature gage was introduced to the dashboard. In the 1920s, car makers replaced the outboard thermometers with decorative radiator caps sometimes referred to as mascots which were used to distinguish the car’s brand and something that would make their cars instantly recognizable. This worked so well that soon car makers were trying to outdo each other with ever fancier statuettes to sit atop their cars’ prows, much like a figurehead on the front of a ship. Vintage hood ornaments are now highly collectible, which is no surprise, considering how unique and finely detailed some of them are. Hood ornaments used to be works of art and a status symbol for any automobile owner. The evolution of the hood ornament mirrors the changing eras of the auto industry – from utilitarian beginnings to symbols of wealth to practical necessity. Even now the hood statue evolves to the now ever present Kustom Kulture with the Rat Rod scene and custom sleds all over the map. However; Vast numbers were taken off cars at scrap yards during the WW2 metal drives and have remained long after their cars were made into tanks and ships where they went

20

from freestanding to chrome hood strips to gone altogether. Hood ornament collecting is big business. A 1925 mascot recently sold for $200,000 and as of this writing there are several vintage hood ornaments being offered on eBay for prices ranging from $500 to $2,000. Today hood ornaments are rarely seen, as protruding figurines on the hood pose a not insignificant threat to any pedestrian unlucky enough to get struck by a car. But these elegant, miniature works of art symbolize the golden age of the automobile, a time when the car symbolized something grand and man’s desire to explore. Some mascots portrayed animals, while others featured mythical creatures, and others gave a nod to other forms of transportations in; airplanes, trains, and rockets. In the 1970s and ‘80s, once safety regulations removed both the literal and figurative sharp edges from automobile design, hood ornaments began to disappear. Those that did remain were simple corporate emblems, like the VW logo which briefly became a symbol of hip-hop – as well as a popular target for thieves. Even Jaguar was forced to lose its signature leaping Jaguar (called “the leaper”) in favor of the much blander flat emblem (“the growler”). By the1990s, hood ornaments had all but vanished. Today they’re mostly found on luxury cars, and they have to be designed to be retractable, like the very cool Rolls Royce emblem: which became the relics of a bygone era, one in which a car was much more than a car. Today I salute the kustom kulture for striving to keep tradition alive the best way they know how.

Well even though we had a tropical storm scare brewing in our Gulf; we still had a decent turnout at this years 2018 St Clare Seafood Festival. With roughly about 38 cars this year and 50 the year before the weather didn’t stop much let alone the numerous spectators that poured in for the sights. The spectators had a wide assortment of venders and gifts to choose from and the food was great. Everyone freely browsed in the old car line up like shopping for groceries. I saw families of all ages enjoying the cars and taking photos together with American muscle. Just a few feet away; St Clare had a little carnival where the kids and families could enjoy the Ferris wheel or tilt-a-whirl ride overlooking the beach. By afternoon when everyone has had their fill of the seafood and sitting under the shade you hear the sound of Elvis over the PA. Nick Perkins of Tickfall LA is a professional Elvis impersonator that has his very own southern following. I actually talked to a couple followers and they freely admitted to being fans who follow his tours dates. After a few Elvis songs the awards ceremony took place and everybody received their various trophies under an iffy sky. Then back to Elvis till the tide started to turn and it was coming to a head. I sure enjoyed my time at this years St Clare Seafood Festival and can’t wait till the next one, minus the tropical storm scare part. See you next year! It's hot…did I say it's hot? It's hot, thank God for air conditioning; I can't remember how I made it as a kid without air conditioning. I think by the time I was 6 years old we got it and my Dad loved it. He liked to hang meat! (keep it cold in the house for when he came in from working on cars or working in the yard.) This is the time of the year I'm not really interested in performing at car shows, it's just too hot. I still enjoy going to car shows, but not working all day on the hot asphalt. Oh the Hot Rod Show trailer has a whopping 15,000 btu air conditioner… but with all those windows open, it pretty much just allows you to stay in the trailer. I have done setups and especially teardowns, where I thought I was going to have a heat stroke before I finished. That's no fun, but if someone waves money in front of me, I'll do a car show this time of year, but I'm just not chasing it if you know what I mean, lol. When June rolls around it means one thing, besides just being hot. It's time for the Blueberry Jubilee and Car Show in Poplarville. The Blue Berry Jubilee is always a lot of fun for the entire family. The town of Poplarville has been putting on this event for 35 years and the entire town supports the event and turns out for it. Looking at the crowds I would guess over 10,000 people attend this event and my numbers may be on the low side. Guys this is a great car show to take the wife and family to because the wife and kids will love it, shopping and eating along with the car show. I headed out for Poplarville Saturday morning. It's a nice drive in the country only about an hour away. As soon as I started getting close you could tell there was event going on. One thing I really like about attending this show is that it takes me back to being a kid again with the small country town atmosphere I experienced as a young boy. Back then small town events you looked forward to for weeks before they took place, really big deals where you knew everyone and everyone was real happy. I get that feel from this event. Probably about 100 vendors and plenty of blueberries to buy and they even sell the blueberry bushes. Over 80 cars at the show, it was full. Jeff Westfall is the promoter for the show and was happy with this year's event. Anytime you have that many folks attending a car show its cool. The show is so big, you do some walking. The vendors are most of the vendors you see at local type festivals and outdoor events. They had fabulous carnival food vendors also, plenty to eat. I spent about 3 hours just walking around and checking stuff out. I can't wait to go back to this show next year. A guy by the name of Terry Jacks had hit record in 1974 with the song “Seasons in the Sun.” It was a good song the first 10 times I played and I learned to hate it after while playing it so much on the radio. It sold 10 million copies. I have really come face to face with the seasons we have in our life. We all think that whatever season, if you will, that is going on in our life will be that way forever. We know realistically that is not the case, but we act in the way that we believe it will go on forever. You are going to have good seasons and bad seasons… and you better learn to appreciate and cherish the good ones, it'll get you through the bad ones. I am having a good summer so far, (summer in Mississippi starts in the middle of May, lol) I bought a season pass to the local water park and have been three times with the grandkids, already this week. Sun, sun tanning and spending time with the kidos, just doesn't get any better than that! I hope you are making the most of each and every day of your life… because you will never get this day back again! There is so much to be truly thankful for every day. Keep that ole Hot Rod ready, take a kid fishing, expose them to our hobby of classic cars and we'll see you down the road at a car show!

Father and Son Build A Cubby’s Choice Award Winner

All of you loyal readers know how much I enjoy the old car or classic car hobby. Whatever words are used to classify it, the hobby has some of the finest and most talented individuals anyone could hope to meet. Well, I have been thinking about the ones that have gone on to Heaven and the indelible mark they have left on us. There is a song called “Heaven” sung by Kane Brown that caught my attention. It talks about how people talk about Heaven like they just can't wait to go. Well, I am not sure about that, but I am certain that Heaven is an amazing place. I have no doubt there is a Heaven, and I envision the car guys and gals who have already gone to Heaven still discussing how to improve on automobiles. They are designing car parts and cars in their minds and discussing the pros and cons. They are bragging about the cars they built and trying to convince others that their way is the correct way, just as they did when they were here with us. They are sure their car was the fastest and best built. After all, they were the ones who constructed them. Those thoughts bring me comfort. What I am trying to tell you is that enthusiasts create more enthusiasm. Enthusiasts have passion that is an important part of happiness. No matter what a person is enthusiastic about, that spills over to other people and they become happier. I am thankful for all the wonderful people I meet, and I am lucky to have the opportunity to get to know them. In some ways, I think these individuals are more alive. They have a happiness that they emit and their friendships are strong. Car enthusiasts are everywhere and happy to share their stories. That reminds me of something Uncle Ezra once said. “When you get old everything reminds you of a story. I have a lot of stories.” I digress. There are people like myself, who have brains that have been eaten up with their passion for vehicles. All kinds of vehicles from cars, to motorcycles, ATV's, travel trailers, bicycles, pedal cars, model cars, tractors, manure spreaders, and pickle seeders pique their interest. I am blessed to have known so many talented and interesting people in my life. Those blessings continue on a day to day basis. As I focus and think about the people who had a positive influence on my life, (and there are many) I am humbled to have known them. I became the person I am today because many people took an interest in me. There is no way to repay them or say thank you. I can, however, keep their memory alive in my mind. They live on because people remember their skills and their kindness. None of us do well in life on our own. The caring people that befriend us throughout our journey mold and influence us. I am hopeful that we cherish the memories of those who have been influential in our lives. When I listen to Kane Brown sing his song that says: “I don't know how Heaven could be better than this” a part of me agrees. The people I meet give me “Heaven” right here on earth. I cherish their friendship and the memories we make together. Because of them, my life is filled with joy. May God bless all of these Angels. My heart tells me He has. Thank all of you for making my life Heaven on earth, and bringing happiness to untold numbers of people who witness your genius. Get out there and share your vehicles with others.

I get excited when two generations of a family get involved in the classic car hobby. Here is a great example of a father and son build. This daily driver cruises the streets of West Lafayette, Indiana and beyond with Ryan Simpson at the wheel. He and his father, Arthur Simpson Jr. built this magnificent 1978 Chevrolet Camaro. Here is the story. Arthur Simpson Jr. purchased this Camaro for Ryan to be his first car. Every weekend was spent together working on this classic. An original interior was created by using salvage parts from three different Camaro’s. (I wonder how many people who look at our cars at shows and cruise-ins are aware of the time and work it takes to find all the parts necessary to restore them. I digress.) Ryan’s father taught him the art of creating a perfectly straight vehicle by making the metal panels flawless. He was taught the intricacies of sanding the metal to perfection. Care was taken to paint the vehicle the original Black and white colors. It had to be flawless (and it is flawless). There is an interesting story to the 350 V-8 engine in Ryan’s Chevy. There was a Camaro drag racing car that had flipped over onto the top as the result of a broken ladder bar. It had extensive damage to the top. The owner of the race car was a machinist by trade. Yup, a trade was struck and Arthur Simpson Jr. performed the necessary repair to the top on the race car. The machinist built an engine for the Simpson Camaro. One hand washes the other. Ryan learned how things are done in the car hobby. What a great learning experience for a young man.

Ryan was only 15 when the build was completed, but Arthur drove him and the car to shows. This well-built car won an award at the very first show! Congratulations both father and son. The 1978 Camaro was the first to sport an all new front and rear body color urethane fascia. This followed 4 years of extruded aluminum bumpers. Originally intended to debut in 1976, production delays ensued. Now hidden behind a sleek new nose was the impact absorbing structure. The Camaro could now withstand greater than 5 MPH impacts. The rear taillights now had redesigned three-color lenses on either side of the fuel door. The license plate was relocated to a molded-in area of the rear bumper. Ryan and Arthur Simpson Jr. have built a true gem. Let’s hope there is a third generation that will one day enjoy this beauty. I hope I am around to get to see that.

Not Your Basic Barbershop Part 2 By Candy Cocktail Throughout the United States and abroad, the past few years have brought about a significant resurgence of classic, old school barbershops that are modernizing and redefining what it is to spend an afternoon at the barbershop. The second part of my feature of stylish and out of the ordinary barbershops are far from the boring establishments your fathers and grandfathers frequented. Premium Barbers' exterior will transform you to cute, kitschy small town 1940s America with a patch of grass and white wooden benches outside. With three locations, this vintage inspired shop will take you to the past.

You can watch a film, read a book or play video games at Matt’s Barber Parlor in Phoenix, Arizona. Every inch of the parlor is filled with personally collected memorabilia sure to catch your eye. With no shortage of stuff to look at, the owner and avid Batman fan, Matt, created the dark parlor with an intended man cave vibe in 2011.

Even Singapore is home to some classic style barbershops detailed on the Daily Vanity website. Autocutt is full of old school vibes with vintage bikes and antique automobile signs. The Singapore shop even has their own specially formulated cologne and pomade.

Ramadan Edwan, a Palestinian barber, uses fire in a hair-straightening technique. While not as popular with domestic barbers, other countries are taking to hot new techniques, literally! With fire, barbers from the Gaza Strip to Dubai are trending on social media with viral videos of clients with flaming heads. For decades stylists in Brazil, Spain and the US have been using candles to burn the end of hair as they cut it. The Daily Mail website stated that the heat can smooth out the hair, get rid of split ends, strengthen the hair and help keep it from falling out. While creative, I think I would prefer to pass on open flames in a crowded barbershop.

And the barbers with quite possibly the biggest hearts, are those that spend their free time giving haircuts to the homeless. In many countries and in states throughout the US, barbers are donating their time to people who need it most. A Melbourne-based barber known as the “Street Barber” skateboards around the city giving free haircuts, naming his work “Clean Cut, Clean Start.” A former cocaine addict himself, the Bored Panda site stated that cutting hair became his new high. While not afraid to ask the tough questions and help his patrons get a fresh start, just a haircut can do so much for someone.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

With videos of his good deeds going viral on social media, Ged King's Skullfades Barbershop team has taken to British streets to provide much more than a haircut to the people who need it the most, giving free haircuts to the homeless. His volunteer team features someone to help people find permanent homes, a pharmacist, an addiction coach and his bulldog. Featured in BBC Three's Amazing Humans video series, Ged has given approximately 1000 free “street cuts” since 2015, in as he says, a society in which our homeless population is dehumanized.

In November, Brennon Jones, a barber known for giving the homeless haircuts on the cold streets of Philadelphia, received his own barbershop thanks to a kind stranger who paid it forward. He dubbed his service “Haircuts for Homeless” and took to social media to get the word out. These barbers are inspiring, helping, changing lives and making those they help feel better, because a new haircut can be a new beginning. Becoming a place to hang out and spend a while instead of a 15 minute in and out haircut, you will want to stay and spend some time relaxing at these exceptional spots. So comb in the Suavecito and check them out for your next shave and trim!

It's late, October season is winding up, and Danny Burke my friend And mentor, is going to give up the #4 car, (and I'm in the 5). Danny had many offers as a race car builder, chassis man, and main event driver. Joe had moved us (Joe Lucy car owner) to Memphis, from Texas City, TX. Joe was chief dispatcher for Commercial Carriers Inc. Out of Memphis, and had lots of stock in the Corporation. (he went to board meetings) Anyway, Danny and I were given delivery driving jobs by Joe, and life was good! I usually delivered pick up trucks, one towing another, and after delivery the company would send a bus (flexible flyer) to pick us up. Joe hired mostly race car drivers, Rosco Rahn, Paul Devore, and others. Indy car owner Pat Clancy was planning on building a 6 wheeler and hired Danny & me to modify the Kurtis chassis. As you see the photo from the front, left to right, that's me behind the tail, Pat Clancy in the middle and Danny Burke on the right. The rest of the crowd were from “DA Lubricants” (Pat's Sponser) and writers and reporters from various newspapers and magazines that reported anything new at the “Indy 500”. The car was initially built to have rear, 4 wheel drive, and be powered by the Offy 4 cylinder dual overhead cams and was 270 cubic inches in size . The horsepower usually came up to 450 hp. Don “Rotten Red” Edmonds and I went over to Myer-Drake Offenhauser to see about changing the intake and exhaust on the Ford V-8 -60 that we were running and were short on R.P.M horse power compared to the Offy's that were in the midgets. The chief engineer was Leo Goosen and he handled all new and products and designs to come out of the Myer-Drake Inc. He put thumbs down on the project!!! One afternoon Danny and I are working on the 6 wheeler, and Danny leaves me at the shop and goes to town for something. I'm under the rear end of the 6 wheeler and Pat walks in the shop, walks over to me and says, “”are we going to win the 500 Larry? If not why not? "I rolled out from under the chassis on my creeper, and looked at Pat. “It's a good design Pat, but short on horsepower”! “So if your right , you will win in the corners”! (there 4 corners and 4 straights at the Indy 500) This theory didn't work out, not enough horsepower to carry the extra weight and traction of the second rear end and still be fast enough! When the chassis work was done, it could be 4 wheel drive, or disconnect the drive to the 2 rear wheels, and still have 4 wheel traction in the corners, and 2 wheel rear in the corners when the 2 rears are disconnected. Notice the beautiful (to me) body work on the front end of the Clancy Special. The photo of me and Billy Allen at Indy in 1956 shows the 1949 KUZMA dirt car built at the same time as the Clancy Special (only as a dirt car for J.C. Aggajanian) I saw this car brand new in 1949 at Clay Smith Engineering when I worked for Clay due to Joe Lucy wanting me to maintain the V-8-60's that were for the #4 car and #5 car (midgets) that Willie Wildhaber and I were to drive out in California Lets go back to Memphis, Danny & I are going to West Memphis every Saturday nite, (It's really across the border of Tenn. & Ark. and is West Memphis Arkansas. Bunch of guys you will remember were “Hooker Hood” Roscoe Rahn, Vik Rothe etc. I'm in the pits after the main one night, and this “Darlin Child” walks up to me and says “ do you like to swim?” I'm looking at her sweater, filled out to 3624-35 just below. “I sure do, but not alone” I say. She smiled and handed me her Dad's business card. She written in “Betty” under the phone# I looked at her and said “this where you work?” She smiled and said “It's my Dad's shop, he builds racing engines and other engines. Turns out, its on the river, and they have a 80' house boat, 20' wide, with a bar, 2 bedrooms, lounge & front room. This doesn't include the 4 bedroom house next to the shop, and 20 acres of riverbank property!

She says “I'm having a swimming party Sunday, (this is Saturday nite after the races) can you make it?” “Sure” I smile, and say “how do I find it?” She smiles back and puts a hand on my arm as she says “I'll go with you back to Memphis, and we can discuss the map and directions”. I'll tell my dad we are going to eat, and I'll be staying with my sister!” So, to my apartment we went, I showered, came out to the front room, and she was looking at me from my bed, her clothes on the chair, she raised up on one arm, and said with a smile, “I'm not hungry are you?” I laughed, walked around to the other side of the bed, threw back the blankets and the sheet, she had her back to me naked, but when I turned her over, (that's another chapter) KEEP IT BETWEEN THE FENCES Larry Dunham 228-671-6216 usaclarry@gmail.com

Dirt Track Revival Everyone knows what NASCAR is, and most can name several superstars who still compete today. However, few seem to recognize where these guys and gals got started in racing. Most of the elite racers today began on the little 1/8 mile dirt kart tracks around the country and eventually moved up to the ¼ mile stockcar dirt tracks in their hometowns, before rising to the big leagues. This is the story about the rise of my favorite racer, my 14-year-old son, Chase Holland. I hope you enjoy, as I share a “behind the scenes” look at our race team. In this article each month, I will share the trials and tribulations of a real dirt track racer and his family. First, to catch you up, let me introduce myself. My name is Chavus Holland. I'm 41 years old and I'm happily married with 3 kids. My wife, Adrian, and I own two businesses in Gulfport, MS. Our three kids consist of 2 girls (Avery 9 and Ruby 4) and our son Chase. Chase was born in August 2003 in Biloxi, MS. From a very early age it was obvious that Chase had a fascination with cars and racing. It didn't help that, at the time, I was building racecars (CHASE1Chassis dirt track stockcars) as a side business of my welding career. When Chase was 3 years old we bought him a small amusement park style go-kart. He would run it, until it ran out of gas every day. We set up traffic cones for a track and made some makeshift flags to begin teaching him what each flag meant. When Chase was 4 years old, we ventured to our local kart track in Gulfport, to see what all the hype was about. As we walked through the pits, at Gulf Coast Motorsports Park (GMP), and smelled the fuel and heard the engines I could see the excitement in Chase's eyes! When we got home, I had some explaining to do to Adrian! We had a used racing kart, hanging out of the back of my truck! After carefully explaining that purchase, I began researching kart racing and ordering safety equipment. Adrian's only condition to us racing, was for Chase to be as safe as possible. We spared no expense on safety and that still holds true today. GMP track rules stated that Chase needed to be between 5-8 years old to compete in the rookie division, so we still had a couple of months to get prepared for his first official race. I know I was more nervous than Chase, when he led the first lap of his first race. He accidentally spun his kart out with a couple laps to go and finished 3rd that day. He won his 4th race he ever competed in. He went on to win numerous races that season and became the track champion of the Rookie Division at GMP in 2009.

JULY 2018

Over the next several years, his talent really began to shine, as he moved up through the kart classes. Chase became a fierce competitor on dirt and asphalt tracks across the South, not just with kids his age, but also adults. We eventually moved over into asphalt Bandolero racing at Sunny South Speedway in Grand Bay, AL.

Bandoleros are miniature stockcars and known as the transition vehicle between karts and stockcars. After finding Victory Lane, numerous times in the Bandolero, we set our sites on the ultimate racing machine, the dirt track open wheel modified! These cars are said to be the most challenging cars to drive out of all known classes. These machines have practically limitless horsepower, hundreds of chassis and suspension adjustment options, and have very small tires! The small tires and huge horsepower combination makes these cars treacherous to jockey around on a dry slick track. We've always loved a challenge!

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

For Chase's 14th birthday, we purchased a used Open Wheel Modified for Chase. This car was bought locally and came race ready with a trailer. It just needed some TLC, from years of sitting up. We found out quickly that this open wheel modified was the most advanced and powerful racing machine we had ever been around. Chase competed in his first race at St. Tammany, LA (LA36 Speedway) on September 30, 2017. He started the feature event with 13 other cars and drove it to a respectable 4th place finish! He competed in 2 more races at our home track, Hattiesburg Speedway. Then closed out the 2017 racing season on November 11, at LA36 Speedway. In just those 4 races, we had six top 5 finishes and one DNF. The competition in this class is intense, and the hunt for Victory Lane is the toughest we have ever encountered! I don't want to overwhelm everyone too much so I'm going to wrap this story up right here. I look forward to picking back up next month and sharing our progress from here on‌SPOILER ALERT...I will say that 2018 has been very good to us so far!

Before I sign off for now, I want to give a HUGE thanks to Jimbo Perkins and Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine for not only giving us the opportunity to share our story monthly, but also for coming on board as a primary sponsor of Chase1Motorsports Chase Holland Racing for 2018-2019!
