Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine People are contagious. You’re going to catch what they have. If your friends are prejudiced, you’re going to become prejudiced. If they compromise, you’re going to compromise. If they have a limited mindset, no goals, no motivation, that narrow-minded thinking is going to rub off on you. You’re going to become like the people you continually associate with. If they’re not making you better, if they’re not inspiring you, causing you to grow, then you need to make changes.

Nothing that’s happened to you is a surprise to God. You’ve got to take the hand you’ve been dealt and make the most of it. It may not be fair, but God is fair. He’s a God of justice. He sees every wrong that’s been done to you, every disadvantage, every hurt. If you don’t use those things as an excuse to get bitter and have a chip on your shoulder, then God will take what was meant for your harm and use it to your advantage. He will pay you back for the unfair things that have happened. There’s another world that we can’t see with our natural eyes. If God were to pull back the curtain, you would see into the invisible world; you would see all these forces that are for you. Powerful warring angels at work on your behalf, standing guard, protecting you, pushing back the forces of darkness. You would see God moving the wrong people out of the way, lining up things in your favor, arranging good breaks, healing, deliverance. Don’t get discouraged by what you see with your physical eyes. Through your eyes of faith, you need to see every obstacle that’s holding you back surrounded by the Most High.

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo The Atomic Blast was just that..a Blast! What a great turn out and what a great time. Friday night we had more people camping over then ever before. Saturday was filled with plenty of activities for everyone. The young folks were showing off their latest rides. Mini bikes, bicycles, and mini cars were everywhere. Hats off to the mom’s & dad’s who took the time to support our younger hot rodders so they could show us older folks just how important it is to spend time with kids.

For nearly a century, coming of age in America meant getting behind the wheel. A driver’s license marked the transition from childhood and dependence to adult responsibility and freedom. To many, it was a far more important milestone than voting or legal drinking. It was the beginning of a new world—of cruising down Main Street to meet with friends and compete with rivals; the ritual of being picked up for a date and making out while “parking”; and of the pleasures and frustrations of repairing, souping up, customizing, or racing a car. This world, familiar to anyone who has seen American Graffiti, the 1973 paean to teen driving, was unique to the U.S. No teens in any other country in the world shared American teens’ level of enthusiasm for all things automotive. This was in part because in the mid-20th century there was a wealth of available cars—cheap used ones from the late 1920s—as well as the fact that by 1940, American teenagers were more likely to be attending high school than working. Elsewhere, 16-year-olds rode bikes or buses and had jobs. Practically nowhere else on earth did teens have the means— and, as high-school students and not full-time workers, the time—to join the adult world of automobility. And they did so on their own terms, partially emulating their elders who had cars, but also by using cars to craft their own personal styles and escape their parents’ control. Some young car enthusiasts remain today, but American teens have as a whole moved on. According to the Federal Highway Administration, the percentage of American 16-year-olds with driver’s licenses was roughly 25 percent in 2014, a steep drop from about 46 percent in 1983. Older Americans who gather at old hotrod and antique car shows lament how their offspring show no interest in their hobby, and car makers and dealers fret over how to
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
sell to an increasingly elusive teen market. What’s changed? The answers are technological, legal, and cultural. One thing is clear: It is harder to get a car these days. Thanks to technological advances, the cars of the last few decades are better made and last longer—and thus cost more, even when they’re used. And the old strategy of buying a “junker,” a car in bad shape, and then replacing a faulty alternator with a cheap scrap-yard part is practically impossible to do on one’s own; repairs in the digital age require more skill and equipment than most teens have. And rising costs meant that poorer teens—especially African American and Hispanic teens—have been more likely to do without. A half-dozen years ago, about a quarter of 16-to-18-year-olds from households earning less than $20,000 per year had driver’s licenses, compared to the three-quarters of their counterparts in households earning over $100,000 who had licenses. Vehicles aside, getting a license in the first place is harder than it used to be. Once, it was a rite of passage to turn 16 and become a full-fledged driver. But since the 1970s, psychologists, safety officials, and legal scholars have campaigned to raise the age requirement to 17 or 18, with more limited permits provided for younger ages. They’ve argued that younger age requirements are a holdover from a time when America was more rural and families needed their teen children, sometimes as young as 14, to drive vehicles on the family farm. These experts amassed great troves of data showing that 16-year-olds, especially boys, lacked the maturity to drive powerful machines on the public road, noting that 16- and17-year-olds were responsible for far more crashes than were even their 18- or 19-year-old counterparts. By the mid-1990s, most states were adopting the so-called Graduated Driver’s License, a multi-step licensing process for young drivers that includes complicated rules about when and where 16year-olds can drive. The requirement of adult-supervised behind-the -wheel training, prohibitions against night driving, and special penalties for infractions, as well as the rising costs of drivereducation classes (which have been dropped from some highschool curricula in recent years) have all led many young people to delay learning to drive until they turned 18 and were free of these restrictions. This new legal regime brings America more in line with many other industrial nations, where the age of 18 has long been the norm. But the decline of teen driving over the past few decades has roots beyond the practicalities of getting a car and a license: Local authorities have also become less willing to allow teens to play around with cars. By the 1980s, many politicians and local businesses demanded that police across the country restrict and ultimately ban the rites of “cruising” (driving around aimlessly) and “parking” (making out in parked cars). Cruising was considered a nuisance because it could interfere with people going about their daily errands and commutes. This inconvenience was tolerated for some time, but by the late 1970s, some local authorities and businesses were voicing concerns about an invasion of outsiders (often nonwhite ones) from different neighborhoods—in part a product of the expansion of freeway systems in areas such as suburban Los Angeles. Complaints like these prompted cruising bans across the country. While cars themselves are losing their place in teen culture, the freedoms and pleasures that they once brought to young people now often seem to be won through other means. The smartphone is the most obvious replacement, offering a virtual liberation from the constraints of family that the car once provided physically. Additionally, with more parents—particularly more moms—away from home during the day, many teens can find privacy right in their own living rooms and bedrooms, with no need for a car to take them elsewhere or provide its own sanctuary. Though these changes mean that teens still find the freedom and privacy that cars once afforded, one thing is gone: that magical age of 16, when suddenly a world opened up. Many teens have been using smartphones since they were kids; privacy in their homes has been granted to them gradually over time. The rite of passage is gone, along with the excitement and anticipation that preceded it for so many.
RUMBLE CHALLENGE By Beth Rayann Corder | Ron Corder Customs Gearheads get it. The ultimate challenge of building a hot rod. They thrive on the project and the process. The thrill of the hunt for parts. The hours of tinkering in the shop. The skill of restoration and fabrication. The lowering or raising of the stance. The chopping. The transformative power of bondo and paint. The outcome of a rustic or refined finish. The rumble of perfect timing and the smell of smoked rubber. Every hot rod is unique in its own right and displays the creative rebuilding and repurposing vision of its designers and the skill and handiwork of its builders. Hot rod builds take many back-breaking, knuckle-busting, wrench-twisting hours of premeasuring, forming, fitting, chopping, grinding, twisting, sanding, re-measuring, refitting and refinishing to transform a hunk of metal (or, heaven forbid, fiberglass) into a rolling piece of art. Notable and novice machinists, mechanics, welders, fabricators, body and paint techs can participate in challenging hot rod builds that often take years to accomplish. This hot rod building passion has brought men of all tastes and talents together for generations. Crews and collaborators form alliances to see hot rod projects of every style and stage take form and come to life. Car enthusiasts young and old, fathers and sons, friends and neighbors, and even new acquaintances readily join tools and trades to accomplish the rebuilding goal oftentimes from the ground up. And, now, the gearhead fathers and sons of Campground Baptist Church have rolled up their sleeves and taken on such a challenge. They have committed to rebuild a 1923 T-Bucket Hot Rod which they plan to give away to one excited participant at their Rumble at the Camp Car Show & Scavenger Run which will take place on Saturday, October 5th. Follow the project on the Rumble at the Camp Facebook page and learn about the event and ways you could have a chance to win and see this hot rod rumble into your garage. Keep them rolling & rumbling! Jimbo, I just want to let your readers know about BEAUVOIR'S COASTFEST July 6th. This will be a family friendly event underneath the oak trees with the gulf coast breeze. We will have local bands, food vendors, craft vendors, cars, cars, cars, you can also tour the Jefferson Davis House with a period dressed tour guide. It has been a busy month for me, not so much car shows or even working on the Big Truck project. My time has been spent doing other things and commitments to other events and organizations. Oh well such is life. I had planned on being in attendance at this years’ edition of the Atomic Blast, it seems from all of the pictures and videos I have watched on social media, I missed a real good one. Hope the planets line up for me next year. I have got to get this calendar of events thing to line up in my favor. Unlike many of you with those Hi-Tech gadgets that are multifunctional and ever present in most folks’ lives, I still use a flip phone, have a house phone, and do all of this on a personal computer on the interwebs. I have a nice digital camera that I use to take most of my pictures, nothing fancy but hey, it works for me. I don’t know who Siri is, nor Alexa, and don’t know Hey Google either. I can barely type with just two or three fingers, but I do get it done. I refuse to comply to the latest trends and marketing strategies of companies touting the latest and greatest things that most folks just got to have. I do have an I Pod that connects to a radio in the Black Truck, that I have not learned how to tune the radio, and someone had to put all of my music on the I Pod too. Now I fear connecting it to this new computer will erase all of my music, I know nothing or very little about I tunes as well. Maybe I could be considered a Tech. caveman. So, you see I don’t depend on those things to keep me on a schedule, or remind me where to be and what I am to do next. I do have a wall calendar near this computer, also several more in the carriage house. All of these keep me informed and in the know for at most the correct date and month if I change them. I have heard rumors that these here PCs also have a calendar, a clock, and an activity planner. Again, to me these are just rumors, I know not if these are factual, and not sure I want to actually discover and use these. I am perfectly fine plodding along in this life in the 20th century. I have taken a long time to get used to this New Windows 10 stuff, I was just getting a grasp of windows 7 and then this new stuff comes loaded on this new P.C. Maybe I could go back to DOS. I could also buy a phonograph player and some 45s and LPs and rock out in my den. As you can plainly see I long for the simpler times in life, I know, I know, we can never really go back to those times, but it sure is great remembering the simpler things in my youth. Riding in the back of pickups, motorcycles and no helmets, heck even bicycles and no helmets, drinking water whenever thirsty from any house that had a water hose or faucet readily accessible. Riding in the rear window shelf of parents’ cars, unrestrained too. I don’t know how most of us survived those years. Maybe that’s why most of us like playing with these old cars and trucks, they help us to remember the things we were so fond of and connect us to those times that seem so long ago. Enough of this nostalgia and reminiscing, I have got to go write on my calendars everywhere for the coming months, so I don’t try to schedule too many things in one day. That’s it for this month, lest I forget Happy Father’s Day to all of you filling the big shoes of Dads everywhere. Oh! and the Queen just informed me it’s the 21st century, (time really does fly when you’re having fun) she’s my spell checker and proof reader. Some of these ramblings often get to her. Later from Ye Olde Carriage House, Master Gizmo.

By: Joyce Lachaussee It's been said 'spring turns a young man's fancy to romance'! It's true! And it's not just young men. If you don't believe me check out the number of car shows/cruise ins that are listed in the May issue of "MotorSports" and you will find a total of 87 events advertised, which is where true romance begins. The love of classics, antiques, resto mods, hot rods and rat rods has long been the desires of both old and young men (some women too). Once upon a time, every young man wanted a car that would impress the girls and the girls loved being seen in a "hot" car. It's a fact the focus is changing in the type of cars collected and shown at the cruise ins which is a direct result of the younger generation moving into this hobby. Still the love of vehicles is a romance that is going strong. At the May Lucedale Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In, the interest goes from a frame off restoration on a stock '46 Mercury to a resto mod '53 Chevy truck.
This '67 sky blue Camero owned by Dale Poole is from the muscle car era. This '67 is surprisingly a 6 cylinder automatic without air. The reason this is so surprising is Dale's first love is Corvettes with lots of horsepower that he can drag race in. This Camero is in great condition and the interior is really sharp. Dale has had this car just two years and the only change is new tires. Nice addition to your collection Dale.
We featured this '46 Mercury b a c k wh e n o wn e r M i k e Lachaussee had completed the body and mechanical restoration but after getting Buck Hudson to give the interior a much needed facelift (actually total new interior), thought we would show it off again. Nice job Buck and I can attest to the comfort of the seats. Please come join our informal group at the Lucedale Hardee's Cruise In and Swap Meet every second Friday of the month - rain or shine.

Down da Bayou Car Club of Lafitte, Louisiana scheduled their annual car show benefitting St. Anthony and St. Pius X Church for Saturday, May 4, 2019. Despite being part of the church fair, God did not bless them with good weather. The skies poured all day, soaking everyone and everything. The car show was postponed until the next day. God apparently approved because the weather could not have been more beautiful. Even though the show was held on a day other than originally planned, cars came from far and wide to participate. This show is held each year so if you find yourself Down da Bayou, you should join in for a great event with a great group of folks.

For the 4th year, the We-Go Cancer Fighters held their annual Cancer Benefit on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Westwego Farmer’s Market. Headed by Charlotte Falgout, a breast cancer survivor, and her husband, T-Van, and their dear friends Ronnie and Kathy Dufrene and a small band of highly dedicated and devoted family and friends, this event raises thousands of dollars every year for cancer research. This year, despite competing with the opening weekend of the New Orleans Jazz Fest just across the river, the turn-out was strong and the weather beautiful. Along with the car show and motorcycle poker run was a small parade from Marrero to the Market so that cancer survivors and cancer warriors could have some fun. Four outstanding bands donated their time and talents including Epic, the Royal Street Band, The Almighty Remedy Band featuring Tracey Anne - Jolie and Cypress. There was plenty of food and fun to be had in addition to raffles and auctions. It seemed that every person I spoke with at the event had been touched in some way by cancer and being there to help raise money to defeat the devastating disease was important. One car show participant said he wouldn’t miss being there even though his car was in the shop. He paid his entry fee and had a car model on display. His “car” won Best Rat Rod of the day. The We - Go Cancer Fighters will be back again next Spring and we all hope you’ll be there, too.

Wow, it’s been a roller coaster ride the last few months. I have been trying to find a better job and I think I have found it. I’ve been working on it for over three months and it’s with a large corporation…I can’t announce it yet but I will be able to tell you about it next month. You would think I was applying to work at the CIA, the process I’ve had to go through. I am in the process of moving to Mobile, AL. I’ll still keep my ties to the Coast and continue to base Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show out of Gulfport and my plan is to continue to write my column. Ninety eight months of writing this column, why stop now, I really do enjoy it.
Friday May 2, I headed out to Destin, Florida for Burning Up The Beaches Car Show. I got up at 3:30 AM (car shows or fishing is the only things to get me up this early!) and I got on the road at 5:30 AM. The weather forecast had been up and down all week. I called Donna Tashik, the show promoter earlier in the week on Monday night and said to her, “Donna do you realize it is calling for 80% chance of rain on Saturday?” Her exact words were “It doesn’t rain on my car show!” The next morning the chance of rain was 30%! So I’m thinking this lady has got some stroke! Well it was up and down all week. So I’m driving to Destin, just hoping we have a car show. So I pull into beautiful Destin Commons a little after 10 AM and get the Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show trailer set up. I drive to the hotel in Ft Walton Beach and get checked in to the hotel, The

Island. Guess what they give me for a room key? An arm band, a bracelet, I ask what is this; the young girl says that’s the key to your room. I ask how does it work, she said hold it up to the door sensor and it will turn green and you open it. I said you’re kidding right? She says no I’m serious. So I said what happened to the cards? She said we still have them. I said can I have one as a backup; I don’t want to be locked out of my room at midnight. She said sure so I got both. I never used the card the bracelet is awesome. Hands full, no problem, stick your wrist up to the door. Never used the card all weekend. You can swim with it, bathe with it and then take it home as a souvenir. No digging through all your pockets for the dadgum card! Awesome, wish I had invented it! Friday night the party for Burning Up The Beaches was at my hotel, so I got dressed for dinner and the party. The party was awesome on what was a beautiful strip of grass, (it was fake, but it looked real) overlooking the beach and sunset. Folks not staying at the hotel had to park across the street and were shuttled over in a big, beautiful, black and fancy Mercedes Benz Party Bus. There was live entertainment that was pretty darn good playing classic rock, there was good food and a real live mermaid to get your picture made with… that I wanted to take home.
After the party was over I went down to my happy place. There is boardwalk that leads to a bar at the hotel that extends halfway to the water. You are way out over the sand beach. I like to go there after the bar is closed and listen to the surf and feel the wind in my face. It has to be the most tranquil place on earth. I daydream about this place. I have enjoyed it for four years… the first week of May. I also met a couple of young ladies from Louisiana down for the weekend,
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
we laughed and told stories. But don’t tell anyone about this place, it’s my happy place. Saturday morning, up at 5:30 AM ate breakfast, stopped by McDonald’s to get my traditional two large black coffees for my Thermos and then by the Ice Machine for my 20 pounds of ice for the trailer cooler. It’s overcast but it’s going to keep us cool for the show. The hour by hour forecast says rain is coming about 4 PM.
I got the Hot Rod Show trailer packed up after the rain and brought it back to the hotel to be ready to head out Sunday morning. After eating dinner I headed back to my happy place and this time I met a couple of young ladies from Dallas. There was a big Military Dinner at the hotel, the ladies had met their mother and father there to enjoy the weekend with them. So we got to share stories and get to know each other. After they turned in I enjoyed my happy place. It allowed me to wind down from a busy hectic day. When I left there I was ready for bed!
We get the show started at 10 AM with the Veteran’s Tribute featuring a local ROTC Color Guard and a Soldier singing the National Anthem. We had a good showing of Veterans! The show was very good, a great turn out of cars and a very good MEGA 50/50. About 2:30 PM it started looking bad, the wind picked up and the clouds started to darken. We moved the MEGA 50/50 give away and the awards up from 4 PM to 3 PM. We just got it in before the hard rain hit. The band, street party and dinner all scheduled for outdoors had to be canceled, but we did have a great car show. You can never control Mother Nature. A lot of money was raised for the Arc of The Emerald Coast and the great work they do for Adults and Children with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Sunday morning I met my brother Ken, his wife Linda, their friends Bill and Sue at the Donut Hole in Destin for breakfast. You can tell it’s a great place to eat breakfast because there is always a serious line out the door to get in. After breakfast my brother insisted we go to his place in Perdido Key, FL it will be my transitional home for the next few months while I find the perfect place to live in Mobile. It will allow me to get the lay of the land in Mobile to decide where I want to live. It is only a block off the ocean and I plan to do some fishing too! Many of you know that I had a weekend career of thirty years announcing stock car racing. I retired from that in 2005 and stayed away from race tracks totally for over a decade. It has been thirteen and a half years since I announced stock car racing. Well an old friend that I worked with at 4 of the 18 tracks I worked at called me up a few weeks ago and told me he had the Loxley Dirt Track, Deep South Speedway and wanted me to announce for him. Well this season that’s where you can find me on Saturday nights. You never know where this journey called life will take you…I’m just hanging on for the roller coaster ride. til next month…

Sam Mahdavi
By: “the Car Show Diva” Jeanie Rupprecht Project Hudson Hornet, Part II Last month, HE&M Saw founder, Gerry Harris and his son, HE&M Saw President & CEO, Doug Harris, traveled to Georgia, to Sam Mahdavi’s shop, Mahdavi MotorSports, to be involved in the filming of “Project Hudson Hornet”, for Sam’s GarageTV. What an experience that was! Sam’s GarageTV is featured on MotorTrendTV (formerly Velocity), MAVTV & REV’N networks and is produced by PowerScope Productions INC, owned by Butch and Sherry McCall, a national television production firm, specializing in automotive and marine programming, along with video production by Revma Media. Sam’s Garage TV host, Sam Mahdavi, founded Mahdavi MotorSports with his brother in 1999 and last year, Sam moved the business to a larger space and became the sole proprietor. While his shop may specialize in diagnostics and repairs, Mahdavi is known for building turbocharged performance vehicles. While he works daily in his business and hosts his TV show, he can also be heard co-hosting the nationally syndicated radio show, Sam’s Garage Radio, with Sam Memmolo, who you might remember form “Two Guy’s Garage”, “Shadetree Mechanic” and “Motorhead Garage”. But let’s not get our Sam’s confused. Sam Mahdavi has been involved with motorsports long enough to have been part of the SEMA installers challenge 2004, two NDRA drag racing Championships, as well as many other NRDA podium appearances, and winner of the Speed Channel hit series “Pinks” in 2008. But that’s not all, Mahdavi MotorSports has provided more than 10 performance cars for the “Fast & Furious” movie series, appeared in “Fast 7” and was involved in the making of the hit movie ”Let’s Be Cops”. It’s safe to say that with all his experience, Sam Mahdavi is qualified to work on any year, make or model car. And according to Gerry Harris, so is his son, Doug. Mr. Harris tells us “I expected Sam to be up to speed, but I was surprised at just how knowledgeable my son was about the Hudson”, Mr. Harris added that maybe he was just “being a proud father.” And why wouldn’t he be knowledgeable, Doug Harris became involved in auto racing as a mere child, just 16 years old when he started racing his MG, the front clip of which ‘might’ have been heavily filled with Bondo, in Autocross events. Funny story; Doug and lifelong friend, Paul Beha, who is now Products Manager for HE&M Saw, showed up for an autocross event, their first, with their motorcycle helmets strapped to the luggage rack. Being 16 and having zero experience, they assigned the car a lap time and had written it in shoe polished on the windshield. As the story goes, the entire race the announcer kept saying, “Mr. Harris must have been drag racing last night, as he still has his times on the windshield”. Well, that was a lesson learned and soon after that, he progressed up to running

Sam Mahdavi Racing a Lotus Europa in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) sanctioned road races and rallies and in 1984 was E-Production Track Champion at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, just west of Tulsa, OK. Until the late ‘80’s-early ‘90’s, he ran his Lotus and Alpha Romeo in road races all over Colorado, where he was living at the time, until he and wife Mary, decided maybe it was time to stop dragging their kids to every race track around. Seems that ‘retirement’ only lasted a few years and by the middle ‘90’s Doug was back to racing again. By then he and his family had moved to Oklahoma, to be more involved with the company his father founded, and racing was back in the picture. And just about every June, you can find Doug Harris, out at Hallett Racing Circuit, participating in
the road course events of the MidAmerica Ford/Team Shelby Meet, held every Father’s Day weekend, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Between these three men, there are volumes of electrical, mechanical, engineering and automotive knowledge. I’d say the Hudson is in pretty good hands. And just to be clear, this is not a frame-off restoration; the goal is to maintain as much originality as possible. Mahdavi says “This is the most feasible restoration, without spending $100K; it makes the Hudson affordable and drivable.” This car is solid as a rock and aside from a small bump under the passenger side headlight, the body is straight and the chrome is all intact and seems to just need to be cleaned and polished. Over the next few weekly shows, you will see “Project Hudson Hornet” get a new master cylinder, bushings, lower control arm, driveshaft, and exhaust. You’ll also get to see the gas tank removal, carburetor rebuild, and engine and transmission removal. Be sure to tune into Sam’s Garage TV, featured on Motortrend TV, Saturdays @ 9AM EST and Sundays @ 8AM EST or on REV’N channel Saturdays @ 6PM EST, Sundays @ 12:30PM EST and Wednesdays @9PM EST.

community, Gen-Xers and Jewish young professionals. The all inclusive Camp Getaway has full buffets at mealtime and endless wine and beer at sunset. Known as more of the party camp, with happy hour evenings featuring party games like beer pong and flip cup, themed dance parties and guitar playing around the campfire. With no official “lights out” time for the girls or boys only air conditioned cabins, it sounds ideal for the best of childhood and adult fun mixed into one.
Adult Summer Camps After my article last month about Virginia’s Camp Motorsport, Jimbo and I were remarking about how fun it sounded, leaving us both envious that we were too old to go. Which got me thinking about what types of adult summer camps are available. I have heard of a few, but I decided to do more research to find some camps that all of us in the “over 18” crowd can visit as well. With a variety of themed camps available, from surfing to yoga to space, there are now camps for adults of every age. Most of us grew up longing for school to end awaiting those long days of summer fun, which usually included going to summer camp! For me it was dance camp and horseback riding Girl Scout camp, but always wishing for unlimited, unsupervised camp fun with no early bedtime and loads of junk food like in the movie Camp Nowhere. Well now those dreams of an unrestricted summer camp have been made into reality thanks to “adult” summer camps that are popping up throughout the US.
Escape to happiness at Camp No Counselors, which takes place at different camp locations. With all inclusive adult camp weekends, the camp is available for corporate retreats as well. Started by a group of friends in 2013, they then took their idea to the TV show Shark Tank. The camp is 21 and up because being all inclusive, they offer hearty camp food and certain alcohol during the daytime with a full open bar from happy hour and throughout the night. You can participate in unique activities like apple bobbing, kayaking, three legged race, tug of war, arts and crafts, yoga paddle boarding, wake boarding, water skiing, a high ropes course, yoga zip line and even a slip ‘n slide. Camp No Counselors has upcoming camp locations in New York and Los Angeles from now through September. Unlike the two traditional style camps above, Soul Camp is like their hippie cousin. Focusing on yoga, meditation and healing, this camp is alcohol-free so guests can detox the body and mind. Held in different locations throughout the US, this adult camp offers both overnight or sleepover free daytime camp options.
Running all summer, Club Getaway sits atop 300 acres in Kent, Connecticut. In addition to the camp classic activities like archery and canoeing, the camp features a water trampoline, Zumba and hip hop dance classes, trapeze classes, stand-up paddle boarding, mountain biking, cardio kickboxing, cooking and mixology classes. This camp even has a variety of themed weekends including a camp for families, members of the LGBT

“You’re never too old for space camp”. If space camp was always where you wanted to escape to as a kid, but could not get there, now is your chance with Adult Space Camp. Located at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, campers spend a weekend learning about NASA and space exploration, perform interactive space missions, test their new astronaut skills in a simulated mission, build their own model rockets to launch and move like an astronaut on the Mutli-Axis Trainer.
For those with a love of music, Adult Band Camp takes place August 611 at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan. More than 70 adults gather together to experience the joy of ensemble performance in a challenging and fun environment. Instrumental faculty teach master classes, coach daily chamber music sessions, play in the full ensemble with participants and camp ends with a public performance in the campus’ Corson Auditorium.
For women 18 & over, there is Camp Sweyolakan Women’s Retreat. Located in Spokane, Washington for the past 26 years, the women’s only camp offers your usual yoga and canoeing, but some luxe upgrades like massages. Similarly, Camp Fire is a women’s only camp.
If you need to step up your kitchen game, make plans to spend some time at Culinary Boot Camp. The Culinary Institute of America hosts Culinary Boot Camp, which boasts chef demonstrations and hands-on cooking, baking and wine classes for a flavorful summer. Boot camps occur throughout the year in California, New York and Texas with an array of boot camps to choose from, ranging from two to five days centered around many different topics.
For the campers like me that prefer sleeping on Egyptian cotton sheets to a sleeping bag under the stars, The Ritz-Carlton in Bachelor Gulch Colorado offers the perfect alternative. The Ritz offers their spin on grown up summer camp with ventures like daily guided hikes, adult-friendly treasure hunting, birdwatching, nature watercolor painting class and classes for an extra fee, such as Painting and Pinot or Whiskey and Wood Burning, in which guests will have a specialty whiskey drink while they etch a unique design into a wooden cheese board or coaster set.
For the die hard Harry Potter fans, there is a Wizarding Weekend. Fans can attend an adults-only, three-day witchcraft and wizardry school inspired by the famous book series. Presented by Worthwich School of Witchcraft & Wizardry , the three-day wizardry retreat is held for adults 21 and over. First-year students are sorted into their houses upon arrival at Worthwich School. Then students have a wand-making class so they have their wand to use throughout the weekend. Over the course of the three days, students will be taught magical classes that include charms, potions, divinations, defensive magic, astronomy, magical creatures and even broom flying lessons. Each house will compete against the others in evening tournaments. The camp is at Parrie Haynes Ranch, located one hour from Austin.

Camp Rahh near Seattle, Washington offers one all-inclusive four-day weekend of outdoor fun centered around music, including four-course meals prepared by an on-site chef, bus transportation and a photographer to capture your favorite memories from camp. Campers can enjoy an alcohol free adventure with several live musical performances, meditation, rock climbing, horseback riding, paint-balling, and dancing all night long at the silent disco.
Camp Winnarainbow is the camp for circus arts. Wavy Gravy, also the name of a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor named after him, is actually a real person who now runs a popular camp for circus arts in Northern California. For one week each summer, grown-ups can try their hand at trapeze, clowning, juggling, magic and more. As the hippie performer says, “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.”
Eastern Pennsylvania is home to Epic Nerd Camp (ENC), which is, as one would guess, for bringing out your childhood nerd. Bring your cape and unite with your fellow nerds for circus games, non-fatal jousting, every board game imaginable and the highlight of camp, LARP, also known as Live Action Role Playing, where campers dress up in medieval costumes to role play.

Go on a surfin’ safari with San Onofre State Beach’s Endless Summer Surf Camp. Located in sunny California between LA and San Diego, surf camp offers five-day camp sessions throughout summer. Learn to surf for the first time, get a refresher if it has been a while or take your surfing to the next level with all levels of instruction and coaching. For just over $1000, this all inclusive camp is alcohol free, taking place in June and September of this year. Spend your days learning to ride the waves and delight in camping on the beautiful beach each night. Camp Bonfire in Philadelphia is what I would call the most rustic camp for adults. It emphasizes the outdoors with no alcohol or technology allowed. The camp addresses walking issues on their website, stating that they are not wheelchair accessible as all campers will need to walk at least 3/4 of a mile per day and walk up a flight of stairs. Hammocks, wood burning, Thai massage, fairy house & terrarium making, Tae Kwon Do, survival skills, quidditch, lemon jousting, a giant swing, embroidery, card printing and button making are on the agenda of this adults only camp. The final two camps on my list are the ones that sounded the best to me because I would much rather skip the 5 mile long hike and have wine or act out Walking Dead scenarios.
Held each year during the September grape harvest in Sonoma County, California, this three-day camp offers visitors the chance to pick grapes in the vineyard and tour several local wineries. Campers will learn the history of winemaking in the area and enjoy extensive meals served with local Sonoma wines. This camp is the ultimate experience for wine and food lovers to experience the beauty of California wine country.

Rules for driving in Baton Rouge 1. First you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is Batt'n Roodge. 2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Baton Rouge has its own version of traffic rules... Hold on.....and pray. 3. All directions start with, "Get on I-10"...which has no beginning and no end. 4. The Chamber of Commerce calls getting through traffic a "scenic drive." 5. The morning rush hour is from 6:00 to 10:00. The evening rush hour is from 3:00 to 7:00. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning. 6. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will get rear-ended. 7. Hoo Shoo Too Road can only be pronounced by a native. 8. Construction on I-12 is a way of life, and a permanent form of entertainment. 9. All unfamiliar sights are explained by the phrase, "Oh, we are in Denham Springs!" 10. If you actually see someone with their turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect. 11. All old ladies with blue hair in Cadillacs have the right of way. 12. Lots of streets mysteriously change names as you cross intersections. 13. Horns are used before brakes or blinkers 14. A trip across town will take a minimum of an hour. 15. Must do::: clover leaf at airline and Florida and airline and 1-12 16. The wrought iron on windows downtown isn't ornamental. 17. If you leave one car length for every 10 MPH speed between you and the car in front of you, somebody will cut in. 18. Never stare at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that says, "Keep honking. I'm reloading." If you are anything like me, you may spend far too much time pondering end of the world, zombie apocalypse scenarios. Thanks to The Walking Dead TV series, my fellow super fans can spend a day, group event or weekend getting hands-on classes in crossbow, knife throwing, survival tips, Zombitsu (a specialized form of hand-to-hand combat) and advanced first aid: everything you would need for the zombie apocalypse. The Zombie Survival Camp takes place in Central New Jersey, not far from Atlantic City, where all classes are led by certified instructors dressed like regular people. Get ready for friendship bracelet making and campfire s'mores this summer. These adult summer camps will remind you what life is all about. Disconnect from the stress of day to day life and take a few days this summer to enjoy the simple pleasures of just being a carefree kid again. Book some grown up summertime fun ASAP.

Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise August 17, 2019 marks the date of the annual Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise in downtown Detroit Michigan. This is an event that began in August, 1995 and was an immediate success. It was designed to re-create the heyday of cruising in American steel down America’s first highway. That year around 250,000 people participated. This one day event has grown to 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars. When the streets of Detroit were initially laid out in 1805 they were designed like spokes of a wagon wheel with downtown Detroit as the hub. Woodward Avenue was the main spoke running in a northwestward direction. The street was named in honor of Augustus B. Woodward, who was a Judge. Woodward Avenue became famous as the first paved road in America, when a mile of it was paved in 1909. When the Detroit suburbs grew after WWII, the areas that ringed Woodward Avenue thrived. The Big Three offered many good paying jobs, and the workers from GM and Chrysler found this area a terrific place to raise a family, In the 1950’s, the American public started buying different models of cars. Automobiles that were stylish and not just a vehicle to get them from point A to point B were being built and families were using them for a status symbol, and for vacationing. Drive-in movies and drive-in restaurants gave families more reasons to get in their car and go somewhere…anywhere.
Drive-in restaurants sprouted up along Woodward Avenue like weeds! The majority of them were mom and pop operations, with the most famous of them being, the American Indian themed Totem Pole, the cowboy themed Mavericks and owner named Ted’s and Richard’s. The drive-in restaurant was more of an automobile destination than a food destination. One could start at the Totem Pole at the south end of Woodward Avenue and cruise all the way to Ted’s and Richard’s at the northern end, stopping at various other iconic restaurants along their cruise, in about an hour or so. Car cruising became quite an event and young people liked to show off their vehicles and any custom touches they had added. Woodward Avenue was wide and 13 miles long. It had many drive-in restaurants all along it and a resident base that was filled with auto enthusiasts. The residents of the suburbs surrounding Woodward were mostly young white-collar engineers and
22
JUNE 2019
designers. Many of these employees were able to take home company test cars for evaluation and what better way to test out a new V-8 engine or another option for next year’s vehicle than by racing another car on Woodward Avenue? There is little doubt that any “goodies” ever offered on a car had a pre-production run on Woodward Avenue. In the 1960’s the stage was set. Cheap gasoline, the street, drive-ins, summer nights, dating, and the cars made up a “Fantasy Land” of epic proportions for young men. By the middle 1960’s every manufacturer offered some form of performance car perfect for racing. The Pontiac GTO and the Ford Mustang both entered the market in 1964. This was the same year that the eldest of the “Baby Boomers” were getting their driver’s licenses. The lucrative auto industry also meant that many families could afford a second car for junior to drive and race. The automobile offered freedom for the youth of the 1960’s and also a way to engage in impromptu street races. While street racing took place all across the United States, Woodward Avenue was like the Indianapolis 500 of street racing. There were, of course, the wannabes who took the wheel covers and air cleaner off Daddy’s car to pretend they had a race car to cruise the Avenue, but there were mostly serious racers in their 375 HP SS 396 Chevelles with 4:11 or 4:56 rear ends racing 440 Mopars and fuel-injected 55 Chevys whenever someone challenged them. By the late 1960’s the police and local residents had grown weary of the racing and the drive-in owners were tired of cars circling through their parking lots or sitting in the same spot for hours nursing a 10 cent soft drink. Laws were put into place to limit the long term parking and cruising. Change had set in once again. OPEC put the final nail in the coffin with rising gasoline prices. I visited Detroit and Woodward Avenue on April 26. Detroit looks nothing like it did in the 1960’s. Woodward Avenue is lined with once thriving enterprises that are now empty. There are huge areas where no people are present. There is an area that is being
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
revived, but there is a long way to go to bring this once thriving Metropolis back to life. It made me sad. Life will return to Woodward Avenue on August 17, 2019. You might want to be there to witness it. There will be more cars cruising there on that date than in the 1960’s, for sure.

WELCOME BACK FANS AND FRIENDS!!! This month is another very unique piece that happens to be a firefighter helmet for a silent auction that will benefit the burn center, I do a few pro-bono items a year so feel free to flood my mail and I might choose your event as well, thanks!!!! 1. I first had my partner Jason Marshall prep the original helmet and get my canvas ready as you see it. The color is actually an accident that happened at the shop. I just liked the color tone and decided to run with it. So after it was all prepped and based in this rusty metallic color with one layer of clear it was ready. I next took a base black reduced mix to very lightly darken in between each rib on the helmet because I indeed had a plan. I actually used post it notes to mark my research around the helmet until I had a plan in play. (planning is vital!!!) 2. My plan was to use a negative and sequential technique to achieve a pretty cool mural with fire and smoke. I designed everything digitally for this piece first and it took countless hours of research and pc time until I was satisfied. After all the work I ended up with a group of stencils I cut and designed that I might use or not. I just go with the flow most of the time and don’t stress, It will look good is my attitude in every project and the power of positive thinking always pays off.
3. So during my research I found a cool saying I liked saying “FIRST ONE IN, LAST ONE OUT” and I counted the ribs and it could work out just fine. So sequential masking is a west coast trick I learned out there which means you have many layers already in place and you pull them as you go. So thinking in 3d I know the top layer would be the font on my art so I lay them first across the helmet all the way around. One by one I place my letters all the way around. 4. After the lettering I begin to lay a single tree at a time on the largest plane of the helmet. One by one I just place trees and after that I lay the main image of the firefighter I had planned placing here in my research. 5. OK now that I have my lettering and the layout of the big plane area I have returned to the rib section. I very carefully placed my firefighter images over each rib AND the lettering. I’m not worried about covering the font because this is where sequential masking comes into play. So I had a great idea to add the firefighters accordingly. I started with them going in by themselves and toward the end I have them saving lives. I though it was a pretty cool extra I threw in. Hidden stuff is cool no matter the age you may carry. 6. After the main layers are stuck nice and good I need a horizon. I could stick the tape and just wrap the bottom layer but I know a cool little

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
trick I’ll share. I take the tape and rip it all jagged and random. Then I use the tape for my horizon which will give me a nice earthy feel to the bottom of the piece. It’s completely random and makes the piece really organic looking. You have to mask everything up for sure. After my border I mask the entire hat before I start the storm. Double check every gap because you are too far in now! 7. I am double loaded now. I have one brush with a yellow mixture and the other with an over reduced dark red. I use a quick connect to just zip between brushes and save myself the problem of having hoses everywhere. If you have a group of hoses then that’s fine too because I still do that too. It is all about what works for you as an artist. Experiment. 8. OK Here we go… I take the first brush with yellow and start randomly doing light liks here and there behind each stencil. I fully covered FIRE in my OVERSPRAY #3 so feel free to breeze back and check out my diagram and instructions on how -to. If you missed it I take a slightly curved item and just use random edges to make nice liks. I
You have to understand that research is almost the entire battle with personal items. Learn your project and become a student of it’s nature. In the end you will become more knowledgeable on it and feel more enlightened because so. If you understand your target then everything else falls into place easier as a kustom painter.
cover the entire piece and make sure I cover each and every stencil with flame. 9. I grab my trusted white pen and add little dots for embers here and there to give it a cool feel. I also sign my piece while I have it out knowing I will color it during my painting process with yellow transparent. 10. I use my red transparent paint now and color over the yellow liks and everything I touched with the yellow or white pen. I then repeat it one more time and start with the yellow and end with red until I'm satisfied with it all. 11. I then very carefully pulled just he firefighters and the main plane image. I was very careful not to pull the lettering underneath. After this was done I very lightly dusted yellow around just the letters that needed it in between the ribs. Once this was done I pulled the letters. Now we have discovered sequential masking and I'm sure ill cover it in future articles for you. All and all our project is done besides the final layer of clear coat. You will never see the full effect until you get that final layer in. VOILIA

hat happens on the dragstrip doesn’t always stay on the dragstrip. Want proof? Look at today’s rat rods, which clearly descend from the scrappy hot rods that pioneered the quarter-mile sport. Want more proof? How about those pumpedon-steroids Pro Street machines, all hood scoop and steamroller tires, which draw inspiration directly from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) racing’s Pro Stock cars. Gassers are another quarter-mile niche that migrated to street duty and prospered as nostalgia-dragstrip regulars. They’re named for a racing class that, among other restrictions, ran on gasoline rather than nitromethane or alcohol. The resurgence and appreciation of the All-American gasser even has some of the original racecars appearing at “reunion” races. Street-legal gasserstyle customs are also venturing onto the street at cruises and car shows. In their racing heyday during the 1960s and ’70s, gassers were often based on fat-fender bodies – though small imports like the Ford Anglia were also popular — with straight-axle front ends and fuel-injected V-8s shoehorned into place. The rulebook allowed front bumpers to be discarded, and the gas to power each run was typically stored in an alloy tank where a grille once gleamed. Frequently, the hood and front fenders were stitched into a single, forward-tilting unit. The gasser look and stance – nose-high, the better to transfer weight to the rear wheels for traction – largely returned with the rise

of vintage and nostalgia drag racing in the ’90s.Thanks to the efforts of vintage-racing clubs like the East Coast Gassers and Geezer Gassers, updated and newly built race cars appeared as a tiresmoking, wheelstanding throwback to a less complicated era. The most radical examples of the gasser species were the supercharged entries, split off into separate classes by virtue of the Roots-type positive-displacement blowers mounted above the intake valley of their V-8 engines. On the strip, the superchargers that ruled were belt-driven units adapted from GMC diesels. Cast-off bodies like Willys coupes were purchased for peanuts from wrecking yards and converted into thundering track monsters. From the factory, a 1933 Willys made about 48 horsepower. Adding a supercharged V-8 and raising the front end with arched springs and a straight axle made for some interesting handling and hugely entertaining racing. Gassers gained popularity and performance through the ’60s, and the best were capable of running over 160 miles an hour. The arrival of factory-designed altered-wheelbase entries and the rise of the Funny Car, along with new approaches to aerodynamics and maximizing traction, assured the decline of the gasser genre. Racers moved on to Corvettes and sleeker models. What worked for drag racers a half-century ago is, admittedly, not the best setup for everyday motoring. Still, that frozen-in-time look holds a powerful appeal, and the hairy handling that results has not stopped a good number of enthusiasts from bucking the Pro-Touring trend and heading back in time to gasser-style builds. Those cars may never see a dragstrip, but cruising down the boulevard, they turn back the clock like few other machines can.

Battling for 3rd on the final lap with Toby Hodge at Hattiesburg Speedway!
Too soon???...Chase got a good laugh about this one! LOL!!!
Coming to the front at Hattiesburg Speedway
DIRT TRACK REVIVAL By: Chavas Holland Welcome back everyone! We are having a great time so far this season! It’s been awesome watching Chase improve week after week! Thank you all for following along here and on Facebook! Our Facebook page (Chase1motorsports Chase Holland Racing) has grown tremendously over the last several months! We’ve gone from 500 followers to almost 12,000 followers on our page in just 4 months!!! We really appreciate you all! We couldn’t do what we love without the love and support ($$$$) from folks just like you!!! Now… Let’s go racing! Chase is so close to putting this thing in Victory Lane again! I keep having to remind him that with the caliber of competition and experience we are competing against, most nights a top 5 is just as good as a WIN! Not good enough for him though…Here we go… We decided to pull a double header on Easter weekend, so we began on Friday night April 19, at Hattiesburg Speedway. Chase went into this race carrying the momentum from his strong performance at the previous race here. We drew a bad starting position and started on the rear in our heat race with 8 cars of the 15 registered in our class. At the drop of the green, Chase went to work! He raced hard and clean as he worked his way up through the field. Chase finished in 4th place, knocking on the door of 3rd. We made a couple small adjustments on the car and got ready for the feature event, where we would be starting 7th out of the 15 hotrods in the house! The racetrack was starting to rut up bad, and Chase had his hands full making passes without touching anyone! He looked like a veteran racer as he worked high and low weaving his way to the front! This race went flag to flag with no cautions! That’s very rare in dirt modified racing, especially on a rough track. This meant the cars were stretched out a lot, so every car Chase passed, he then had a 10-15 car length gap to make up before he
Chase and Heath Williams fighting for the win at Hattiesburg Speedway! could begin working on his next position. (All in a 12 lap feature) After he took over the 4th position from Bryan Powell (#9), Chase laid down his fastest laps of the night, as he made a run to catch Toby Hodge (#3) for 3rd! With the flagman showing “two laps to go” Chase found himself right on Hodge’s rear bumper. I knew Chase was super-fast because he had just closed a full straightaway gap on Hodge in just 2 laps. Chase peeked on the outside, but Hodge closed the door down the back straightaway! It was exciting because not only were they racing against the track with all the ruts, but they were also lapping cars as they were battling it out for that 3rd position! “White Flag in the air” Chase dives on the inside of Hodge and you couldn’t stick a hand between them going into turn 1!!! Chase pulls Hodge by half a car length down the back straightaway and they go side by side into the final turn! Hodge had the preferred line for entering turn 3! They both hit the huge ruts and their cars flew off the ground as they both did a fine job of keeping off each other…They rubbed a little as the two of them drag raced to the CHECKERED FLAG!!! WOW!!!!!! SIDE BY SIDE at the line!!!

Everyone around me is going nuts about how awesome of a race that was for 3rd… but none of us know who got there first! Hodge got Chase by inches! WOOOOHOOOO!!! This is fun! We had so many fans come and congratulate Chase on this awesome run. Definitely an “edge of your seat” race! Great job by both drivers! We hauled butt home, tried to get some rest, and we woke up bright and early Saturday morning and began working on the car! Y’all remember that double header I mentioned earlier? Yeah, it seemed like a great idea until I’m out here working my tail off Saturday morning with Chase and Paw Paw George…all of us running on just 3 hrs of sleep! We got the car ready and off we went with the whole family in the motorhome, headed to Whynot! We were fast in hot laps, and we were really strong in the heat race as well! Chase started in the back of the 9-car field for the heat race and found himself battling for 2nd with Randy King (#K1) in the closing laps of the heat race! Chase beat him to the checkered! Chase ended up finishing 2nd to Toby Hodge (#25). (Hodge was in his other car this time!) That would have us starting front row outside for the Feature. Our friend and Chase’s mentor, Noah Daspit (#34) was in the house as well! Noah had to pull in the pits early in the heat race, after another car rammed into Noah causing damage to his car. The SUPER Late Models were the big show of the night and we would be running our feature race after their 40 lap feature! The tacky track, as we knew it, with all that grip…was no more! This track now looked like black ice as Chase and the field of modifieds rolled onto the speedway. I was nervous about our set-up! Chase had wanted to go get suggestions/advice from Noah before the feature, but I asked him not to bother Noah because I knew he was there to race too! Also, I knew he was trying to repair his own car to make it to the feature. (Noah told me later in the week to never worry about bothering him…he said he would make time to help Chase anyway/anytime he could! Noah has been really good to us in the year we have known him! Chase really looks up to him and he always helps us keep this car super-fast!)…back to the race… At the drop of the green flag, Chase looked good on the highside!...but…Here comes Noah, (he started last) and he passed Chase for 2nd coming out of turn 4 on the 1st lap! He’s FAST!!! Chase tried to go in turn 1 really fast, right behind Noah, but he soon found that his car was WAY to loose to carry that kind of speed into the turns! LOL!!! He didn’t spin it out, but he said he felt that helpless feeling where the rear-end hangs out over your shoulder and your butt cheeks suck in because you feel like you’re about to spin it out! LOL!!! Chase dropped back to 4th as Randy King (#K1) took over 3rd. We were skating around on that slick track just trying to survive! I really felt bad because I missed on the set-up! We stayed in 4th for the rest of the race. Overall it was a great weekend for the Young Gun! Next race report…April 27th, at Hattiesburg Speedway. We started on the pole of our heat and went backwards thanks to…me again! I can explain this one…At the end of hot laps, just before our heat races, the track was turning black. That is a sure sign that it was about to dryslick! So…we/I decided to begin tightening up the car before the heat race…then the track officials rolled out the water truck!!! TOTALLY threw me for a loop! I decided to leave the car tight, just in case the water made the track slimy…I missed again! The track soaked up that water and the bite was back! Chase was SUPER tight getting into the turns and struggled the entire heat race, where he eventually fell back to 3rd! I took that adjustment out, and we topped her off with fuel, and went back out for the Feature where we would be starting 5th in the field! Chase drove a very smart race! He fell back a couple positions early in the feature as he avoided a couple near wrecks, and once he got his momentum rolling he started wheeling that hotrod to the front! IT WAS AWESOME!!! He worked the high side and made several really good crossover moves to get himself in position to battle for the win!!! Chase took over the 2nd spot behind the leader Heath Williams (#18) and they had a great race shaping up before a caution came out and bunched up the pack again. On the final restart of the race Chase gave Williams all he had, as he closed in and began

challenging for the lead! “White flag in the air” Chase looks on the inside of Williams down the front straightaway and crosses over to the high side going into turn 1, Williams hugs the bottom, Chase crosses over again and aims to the inside of Williams coming off of turn 2 and down the back straightaway, Williams shoots towards the high side, Chase pulls his front bumper on the inside of Williams’ driver’s door down the back straightaway! Both drivers fighting hard for that win but it’s Williams ahead of Chase this time at the checkered! Another AWESOME race and exciting finish! Next race weekend (MAY 3-4) was a wash! RAINOUTS everywhere!
Deep South Speedway Loxely, AL Next race weekend (MAY 10-11) was looking like a repeat of the previous weekend!!! We were desperate and willing to make a long haul (if needed) just to get a chance to race! We learned that the ONLY place that had even a slight chance of getting a race in on this wet weekend was DEEP SOUTH SPEEDWAY in Loxley, AL. Not a bad haul. We changed the gear and hit the road! With the heavy threat of rain in the area, we were just thankful to have found somewhere to sling some dirt! Chase looked great in hot laps and he would be starting on the pole for the heat race. Deep South Speedway is a 4/10 mile high-banked superspeedway! VERY VERY fast racetrack! Chase jumped out front at the drop of the green and never looked back! I’m over there videoing this race and I just can’t believe what I’m seeing! Once again, I’ve brought Chase to a new track, that we’ve never been to, with all different drivers, and he’s straight off the trailer FAST!!! He went under the checkered flag over a straightaway ahead of the 2nd place car! He was just about to lap a competitor, (after the checkered) and the lapped car got swirly and darted into Chase and knocked the rear suspension out from under our car!...Looking like a DNS for our feature! The track personnel appeared to be having trouble getting Chase back to the pits…I’m helplessly looking through the fence wondering how bad the damage is…If I’m being honest, I was a little upset with Chase at the moment! (I knew he wasn’t hurt because I could see him shining a light under the back of his car surveying the damage) I was aggravated with him because we had just won this race BIG TIME… and here we are sitting on the back straightaway with our car destroyed all because he decided to race an extra lap!!! It was at that moment that my phone started ringing…It was an Alabama area code…Hmmm, who would be calling me right now from Alabama? I answered, “Hello” then this familiar voice says “Hey Diddy” (That’s what he’s called me since he was a little turd! I said “great job buddy…until the end!” He said, “Don’t start, it ain’t over yet! I need you to get us some parts ready to fix this thing so I can run the feature!” I asked what all we needed, and that’s when he told me that it had knocked the left rear spring out onto the race track! It had also broke the shock off and broke the coil over eliminator!!! Whoa that’s major! So, they finally got him into the pits and we got the car up on jackstands. Chase immediately jumped down with the impact
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
and started taking what was left of the left rear wheel and tire off, and that’s when he asks me…”Was that my fault?” …Well I wasn’t going to sugar coat it! I replied, “WELL…it was his fault that you wrecked, BUT if you would not have tried to race him after the checkered flag, then none of this would have happened!” The blood drained out of his face at that moment…he turned white and said, “WHAT?? I WON THAT RACE???” He thought he had just went under the white flag! He honestly had no clue that he had won that race! He said, “Well now I’m embarrassed! I feel like an idiot!” Suddenly, I was no longer aggravated with Chase, because now he was beating himself up about making a simple mistake! As for our car…we weren’t able to repair it in time to start in the $800 to win feature event, so we loaded it onto the trailer. It was a tough pill to
swallow, but that’s all part of racing! We dropped off a bucket full of broken parts to Noah the following week! Noah went to work ordering parts and making repairs! We will be ready to go again this coming weekend (May 18th) at Hattiesburg Speedway! I have had numerous phone calls and messages from other experienced racers and they all have expressed to me (in Chase’s defense) that it’s really hard to see the flagman at this particular track from a driver’s perspective. They all agreed that it’s best to continue racing until the caution light comes on! It’s better to make too many laps than not enough!!! I AGREE!!!...That’s all for now! We hope to see you all soon at the local race track! Thank you for reading! Until next time…Chavus

Under New Management Smith All In at Mobile Speedway Pixelated SPEEDꞏFriday, May 10, 2019 By: Daniel Vining, Twitter: @danielvining IRVINGTON, Alabama (May 10, 2019) -- Just months after assuming the role of Competition Director, Gulfport, Mississippi’s Jason Smith is now the General Manager of Mobile International Speedway. Smith officially gained control to the keys to the speedway on Friday afternoon after coming to an agreement with the previous promoter, Charlie Lyons and speedway owner Ida Hatfield. Mobile Speedway issued a statement on their official Facebook Page on Friday night: Mobile International Speedway is proud to announce new management! Race Director, Jason Smith, which was a long time local racer has stepped up to the plate to take over operations at the Speedway! The track will run the current schedule as originally advertised for the remainder of 2019. This is a long term deal which will give the Speedway the stability that the racers of MIS deserve. "I am honored to have the opportunity to be the promoter at such an iconic speedway with a very rich history! Although this deal has only recently materialized, I feel like this has been in the making all the way back to my childhood when my father started racing at MIS in 1981." Jason Smith Smith served as Mobile’s Technical Director after a failed attempt at purchasing the speedway led him to hooking up with the Lyons family, who brought racing back to Mobile in 2018 and were managing the speedway in the 2019 season until this new agreement was reached. “I was putting together a deal to purchase MIS with an investor, but it fell apart,” said Smith in February. Then the Lyons came in and put a deal together themselves. Shortly thereafter, they asked Dave Mader for my number. We sat down and talked about what was going on at Mobile, and wanted to know if I wanted to still be a part of it and work for them.” “I told them I’d gladly do it,” he continued. “I wanted to be a part of what was going on at Mobile because it was important to me that it didn’t become a dirt pit. From there, I worked all of 2018 as the Technical Director at Mobile International Speedway.” Fast forward to May 2019 and Smith finds himself all in for this run at managing Mobile Speedway after pulling together every resource he could in order to see this deal come together. “I’ve got everything in this… I’m all in and all the chips are on the table,” said Smith. Smith has a tough road ahead after Mobile Speedway’s return to racing last year left the track digging itself out of a bit of a hole to start the 2019 racing season.

JUNE 2019
The year started on a tremendous note with a sellout crowd for the Bandit Big Rig Series’ visit followed up with an equally strong regular season opening night. Even with the strong start, the issues from 2018 have continued to seep into this season, making moving forward a challenge. Smith told PixelatedSPEED that it’s a challenge he is up for taking… noting that he made many observations during the beginning of the season that as an employee he had less control over but now as the General Manager, he can affect the changes needed in order to improve results in all areas of the speedway. He added that he is looking forward to getting the speedway back on track with its goal of moving forward. “I have a long term deal here,” he said. “I look forward to seeing old faces back at MIS that we haven't seen in awhile.” For at least the time being, Smith will pull “double-duty”, continuing to serve as the speedway’s Competition Director in addition to his new role as General Manager. He said he may hire a new Competition Director next year. Smith will continue to focus on the local divisions at Mobile, which returns to competition on May 18th. He reemphasized the sentiment from his February announcement as Competition Director. “Whether its trucks, outlaws, sportsman, whatever, if you come and see the local guys race, they’ll put on a show and I think you’ll be happy. Some of the best shows we had in 2018 as far as just good door-to-door racing come from our local divisions. We had better racing in the locals than in many of the late model shows. I know the local teams are dedicated to putting on a show if people just show up to watch them.” Following the May 18th show, Mobile Speedway welcomes the Southern Pro Am Truck Series as they visit Irvington for the first time. That night will also feature Sportsman and Pure Stocks. Then the speedway hits the heart of the summer with seven weekends of local division racing leading up to the season championship on September 7th. The year will close out with the Mobile 300 weekend on November 1st 2nd.
