Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Here on the Southern Coast of the good ol’ USA it seems like October kicks off the car season. October brings thousands of visitors to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This is the eighteenth Annual Cruisin’ the Coast. This months magazine is full of activities and events showcasing our local clubs & organizations, our restaurants, points of interest and history, as well as a chance for all of us to live up to our ‘Southern Hospitality’. Locals may take for granted this Coastal area we live in, but the folks that came here for this event have been looking forward to a good time. So show our guest your positive side and welcome them. A little courtesy and patience goes a long way to show our out of town guest that we really do appreciate their visit. And hope they will visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast again the 1st weekend in April for the Gulf Coast Auto Show. Next month, November 3-8, Gulf Coast MotorSports will set up the Coast Cruizers ‘Hot Rod Alley’ hospitality tent at the Emerald Coast Cruizin’. Nancy & I look forward to seeing those of you who will be making the trip to Panama City Beach Florida for this event. The GulfCoastMotorSports.com web site has gone thru a complete makeover and I hope you will find it user friendly. We have a lot to offer our online users, our event page and classified pages get the most viewers and those pages a updated almost daily. Any closer to the water and we'd need water wings. This show is our annual fund raiser and draws Corvettes from Texas to North Carolina. Proceeds from this show are used to fund local Gulf Coast charities, including the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program and St. Vincent de Paul Pharmacy, providing needy coast residents with prescription drugs. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Corvette Club was founded in 1982, bringing together automotive enthusiasts with the common interest in Corvettes. Since its founding, the club has participated in auto shows coincidently as far away as Texas to the west and the Carolinas to the east. Other club events have included track days at Talladega and Texas Motor Speedway, running of the Tail of the Dragon in the Great Smokey Mountains, club picnics, and participation in local events from Cruzin' the Coast, cruise-ins and local parades (everyone wants Corvettes in their parades). We are also a member club of the National Corvette Museum and participated the recent Corvette National Caravan and 20th anniversary celebration at the museum. Our sponsor is Preston Hood Chevrolet in Biloxi and has been our mainstay support for several years. Come visit our club, meetings are the last Thursday of the Month at Preston Hood. Meeting time is 6:30, but come early and meet our members. Car registration is $40, if you pre-register by October 15 your registration will include a show shirt, dash plaque and goodie bag. The show is free to all who would like to stop by and see the shiniest Corvettes on the Gulf Coast, so come on by and check us out. Brian Gambony, Show Chairman.

Rakes Parrish Emerald Coast Cruizin Jimbo, I've seen two shows lately that went on and on about how mid-life is a great time for women. Just last week Oprah had a whole show on how great menopause will be.... Puhleeeeeeeze! I've had a few thoughts of my own and would like to share them with you. Whether you are pushing 40, 50, 60 (or maybe even just pushing your luck) you'll probably relate. Mid-life is when the growth of hair on our legs slows down. This gives us plenty of time to care for our newly acquired mustache. In mid-life women no longer have upper arms, we have wingspans. We are no longer women in sleeveless shirts, we are flying squirrels in drag. Mid-life is when you can stand naked in front of a mirror and you can see your rear without turning around. Mid-life is when you go for a mammogram and you realize that this is the only time someone will ask you to appear topless. Mid-life is when you want to grab every firm young lovely in a tube top and scream, "Listen honey, even the Roman empire fell and those will too." Mid-life brings wisdom to know that life throws us curves and we're sitting on our biggest ones. Mid-life is when you look at your-know-it-all, earphone-wearing teenager and think: "For this I have stretch marks?" In mid-life your memory starts to go. In fact the only thing we can retain is water.

Mid-life means that your Body By Jake now includes Legs By Rand McNally -- more red and blue lines than an accurately scaled map of Mississippi. Mid-life means that you become more reflective...You start pondering the "! big" questions. What is life? Why am I here? How much Healthy Choice ice cream can I eat before it's no longer a healthy choice? But mid-life also brings with it an appreciation for what is important. We realize that breasts sag, hips expand and chins double, but our loved ones make the journey worthwhile. Would any of you trade the knowledge that you have now for the body you had way back when? Maybe our bodies simply have to expand to hold all the wisdom and love we've acquired. That's my philosophy and I'm sticking to it! StillWildDonna@ Jimbo, It was Senior Citizens Day at the Latimer Community Center and for special entertainment Claude The Magician was invited to entertain the seniors. Claude was introduced and for his first act he told the assembled seniors he was going to hypnotize them. He pulled a gold watch and chain out of his pocket and began to swing it to and fro. Now Claude was, of course, a fake but the watch and chain were real. They had been in his family for six generations. Back and forth the watch swung, 150 sets of eyes followed every swing until the entire audience was hypnotized. Suddenly the chain broke and the watch fell to the floor and broke into hundreds of pieces. "S%#t", said Claude. It took three days to clean the community center and Claude the Magician was never invited back. Tommy mck3325@

When you wish to display simple and pure affection without regard for narrow-minded social conventions. B. When he is the Pope. (Not on the lips.) C. In your opinion, the ideal pet is: A. A cat. B. A dog. C. A dog that eats cats. 5. You have been seeing a woman for several years. She's attractive and intelligent, and you always enjoy being with her. One leisurely Sunday afternoon the two of you are taking it easy. You're watching a football game; she's reading the papers when she suddenly, out of the clear blue sky, tells you that she thinks she really loves you, but, she can no longer bear the uncertainty of not knowing where your relationship is going. She says she's not asking whether you want to get married; only whether you believe that you have some kind of future together. What do you say? A. That you sincerely believe the two of you do have a future, but you don't want to rush it. B. That although you also have strong feelings for her, you cannot honestly say that you'll be ready any time soon to make a lasting commitment, and you don't want to hurt her by holding out false hope. C. That you cannot believe the Broncos called a draw play on third and seventeen. 6. Okay, so you have decided that you truly love a woman and you want to spend the rest of your life with her, sharing the joys and the sorrows the world has to offer, come what may. How do you tell her? A. You take her to a nice restaurant and tell her after dinner. B. You take her for a walk on a moonlit beach, and you say her name, and when she turns to you, with the sea breeze blowing through her hair and the stars in her eyes, you tell her. C. Tell her what?
It’s October and time for cruising again. This month I am going to list a few restaurants that the Coast Cruizers visit on their dinner runs and for meetings. Some of the restaurants serve just breakfast and lunch. I will enclose phone numbers so you can call and check. Others serve just lunch and dinner. So lets start in Bay St Louis with Neil’s at the corner of Hwy 90 and Dunbar. Phone 228-463-1277. This is in the shopping center there. There is Brooklyn Pizza also. Then in Pass Christian there is Daddyz on North Street and the corner of Menge Ave. Great home style meals along with great seafood. Nice portions also.(228-222-4269) Then on over in Long Beach on Beat Line Road and 28th Street is a place called Double D’s here is one for just breakfast and lunch. Opens at 7 for breakfast, a great place for kids. They have items for kids, I must be a kid because I like grilled cheese sandwiches also.(228-206-5694) Then in Gulfport downtown is the Palace Grill and restaurant. It has been in Gulfport for over 50 years. Same family still owns it. It is another for breakfast and lunch. It is a local favorite. (228 -868-3870) Just down the street from the Palace going north on hwy 49 is El Agave restaurant. (Look for their ad in Gulf Coast Motor Sports Magazine. This is a great Mexican restaurant with a different touches than the old Tex-Mex type food. One of the few places that has green chili sauce on certain dishes. (228-822-1415) Mercedes will have a couple of his trucks sitting outside also. Now on to Biloxi. Café New Orleans in D’Iberville on Lamey Bridge Road. The seafood has a little spice to it but it can’t be beat for portions. (228-396-6031). Then if you know or can find Woolmarket, there is Taranto’s great seafood, poboys and chicken sausage gumbo. This is another place worth going to more than once.(228-392-0990) If you are not local you may want to ask how to find the place. We have found that the Waffle Houses are good here on the Coast. We meet and have breakfast at several different ones, depends on what is going on that day. Enjoy the food and coast. Till we eat again J. R.
7. One weekday morning your wife wakes up feeling ill and asks you to get your three children ready for school. Your first question to her is: A. "Do they need to eat or anything?" B. "They're in school already?" C. "There are three of them?" 8. When is it okay to throw away a set of veteran underwear? A. When it has turned the color of a dead whale and developed new holes so large that you're not sure which ones were originally intended for your legs. B. When it is down to eight loosely connected underwear molecules and has to be handled with tweezers. C. It is never okay to throw away veteran underwear. A real guy checks the garbage regularly in case somebody, and we are not naming names, (but this would be his wife) is quietly trying to discard his underwear. 9 . What is the human race's single greatest achievement? A. Democracy. B. Religion. C. Remote control.

Get ready for the most incredible Cruise-In of the year. Unless you have been to this Cruise-In, there is no way for you to understand how great it truly is. It takes Cruise-Ins to a whole different level. It’s time for the 3rd annual Coast Cruizer’s Mega Cruize-In at Edgewater Mall in Biloxi, Saturday night October 11 from 6-9 pm. How incredible is it? Last year over 600 cars and 3,000 people. Our Mega 50/50 was over $2,600 in three hours and we gave away of $3,000 dollars’ worth of door prizes from Auto Zone. It’s the last Saturday night of Cruisin The Coast and it is awesome! That place is rocking with a good time and we close out the Cruisin The Coast week in style. We will again have a major amount of door prizes from Auto Zone and we will be going for over $3,000 in our Mega 50/50 jackpot. We will pack ‘em in and it is amazing what all is going on in that 3 hour period. We’ll kick it off with a tribute to our veterans and the playing of the national anthem. You want to get in the mall parking lot mid-afternoon to get a spot, otherwise you’ll probably have to walk in or get there later on in the evening. It is the most action-packed place to be on that last Saturday night of Cruisin The Coast! It is a celebration of our Hot Rod lifestyle, cars, music and memories! A huge party that you don’t want to end! Everyone is welcome that can make it in and making it in will take effort. So come and join us… and then try to explain to your friends what a Cruise-in is all about. The Coast Cruizer’s welcome everyone to town for Cruisin The Coast. I’ve been to a lot of car shows around the Southeast and we are truly fortunate to have one of the best car shows in the country here in our backyard. I think other Hot Rodder’s agree since we will have cruisers here from over 40 states attending this year’s event. The event is looking to once again register over 8,000 cars with thousands more coming just to hang out. With 26 miles of beach and coastline to spread them out and the weather here in October, it’s no shock that this event has grown so big. The casino’s and entertainment geared to the event just put things over the top. For ten years I tried to explain this event to my brother and last year he finally came and of course he is back this year. The funny thing is that he is struggling with telling and explaining this event to his friends. You can take all the pictures you want, but when you look back through them, none of the photos do it justice. You can even watch My Classic Car with Dennis Gage when Dennis features our show and no, not even close. We do appreciate what Dennis and his show has done for our event. It has truly helped to make Cruisin The Coast a national event and one
of the largest events in the state of Mississippi. This has also been an incredible year for Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show. We have played some great car shows, seen some incredible cars and met some of the best people in the world. It has truly been an adventure! You never know what you’re going to deal with also… Without embracing anyone… it has also been strange at times. We were set to do four days at a big show in the state of Texas. We had agreed on all the details in about ten emails back and forth over three weeks, including hotel rooms. We had confirmed we would do the show. An eight page contract had been drawn up and then it got weird. The promoter I was dealing with asked to see pictures of the show and the cars. Wait a minute…the cars? What cars? The promoter assumed I was bringing cars with me to the show. I asked her where she got that idea. Nothing in my info or any of our emails back and forth mentioned anything about me bringing cars. She said she guessed she assumed it with our name, Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show. Everything came suddenly to a screeching halt and thousands of dollars went poof. I sat there in shock for about an hour. Wow, did that really just happen? It was depressing, really depressing. I have to laugh about it now because it was like being in the old TV show The Twilight Zone…I swear I also heard the music playing in the background. The only thing that now limits The Hot Rod Show is the number of vacation days I have to work with. I only have ten vacation days per year. So when a promoter wants me to drive in Wednesday or Thursday, bam there goes those vacation days. Ideally the best shows are the ones that I can get off a little early on a Friday, drive to the show and spend the night, do the show on Saturday, spend Saturday night there and then drive back home on Sunday. I can do a lot of those shows. So if you are here on the Coast for Cruisin The Coast, welcome, enjoy yourself, soak it all up and then try to explain to your friends how much fun it was and you too will find out how hard it is to translate the enormity of this event in words and pictures. Also be sure and join us on Beach Blvd. (Hwy 90) near the Biloxi/ Gulfport line at Edgewater Mall Saturday night October 11 from 6-9 PM for the 3rd annual Coast Cruizer’s Mega Cruize-In. It’s always great to get out of town for a car show, but it’s even better to have a great car show come to you… where you can enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind… and sleep in your own bed! Til next month…

Central Florida's renowned High Octane Saloon featured a day of fun, pinups, hot rods and cool bikes this past August. High Octane Saloon is located in Homosassa, Florida.
The saloon not only has a grill that is open until 2:00am Tuesday through Sunday, serving up their famous BBQ, but they also have a tattoo parlor inside. I don't know of any other saloon in my area where you can get tattooed at the saloon while you listen to cool rockabilly music. On August 17 they had the Rockabilly Cruise In & Burlesque Party. They had a variety of entertainment throughout the day, but the highlight was the enormous collection of bikes present at the event! There were various cars and rat rods from local car clubs and some rockin' rockabilly music by Jeff Vitolo & the Quarter Mile Rebels. In addition to contests and vendors, they also had some featured entertainment for those that love burlesque and pinups; there were 2 steamy burlesque performances by the famous La Teaze Burlesque Troope and a meet and greet and retro pinup competition hosted by the lovely 2013 Miss Pinup America, Samantha Sweets the Devoted Doll. There were over 20 contestants in the pinup contest, including yours truly! I have recently become part of Pinup America Magazine's group of promotional models called The Vintage Dream Girls. Along with our sister group The Vintage Kittens, we will be at a variety of events in the area. This was the first big event that we were a part of and we all had a fabulous day! The High Octane Saloon has a weekly schedule packed full of events! The saloon is closed Mondays. Every Tuesday they have free beer and dance lessons from 6-8pm. You can learn swing, cha cha, and many more. Or stop by for Happy Hour Tuesday-Friday from 11am7pm. They have a comedy show every Friday night and bike night on Thursdays. The Saloon property even has a burn out pit! There is another event scheduled November 16. If you are in the Florida area make sure to stop by High Octane Saloon for some cars, bikes, entertainment and maybe a tattoo too! The High Octane Saloon 1590 S. By: Mark Lammon I had been looking for a dragster for many years and had answered ads, chased rumors of cars and even found a few to look at. One that I remember was in New Orleans and had been fabricated out of exhaust pipe tubing. It, like most of the others I had previously looked at, was beyond “resurrection” or simply not worth the time and money that they would require to bring them back. Many of my friends knew of my interest in finding an old dragster and one day one of my employees called me to tell me that he thought he knew of one for sale. He was working in a refinery in Chalmette, LA., and one of his project coordinators was out for a few days and when he returned, my friend asked him if he had been sick. He told him no, that he’d been drag racing in Houston over the weekend. My friend didn’t know that he was a racer so he asked him if, by chance, he knew of any old dragsters for sale. He said, “As a matter of fact, I do. My dad has an old dragster that he wants to sell.” When I was told about the car I immediately called and made arrangements to see the car the next day. Everything I was told about the car sounded positive and I was really excited and anxious to see the car. The next day I met its current owner, Mike Dupree, and we went to his shop to see the car. On blocks and in the corner of his air conditioned shop sat a ready to race dragster sharing the space with his other “toys”. Mike wanted to sell the dragster in order to pay for his flying lessons. He was selling just the rolling chassis and we agreed on a price and I made plans to come back on Saturday in order to give him time to pull the engine and transmission. He told me that he was the third owner of the car and had owned it since 1967 and that it was a Boogie Scott chassis. I didn’t know who Boogie Scott was at the time but with a little research I soon found him and learned that he was still building race cars in Covington, La. On Saturday, I borrowed a friend’s trailer and we went to Chalmette and picked up the car.
Finding the car when I did was my good fortune as this was the year before Katrina and Mike lost everything when his house and shop went under 12’ of water.
The car was a time capsule from the 60’s and 70’s and had obviously been seldom raced. It had a Chrysler differential with Oldsmobile drum brakes, American mags on the rear, Moon wires on the front and the front tires, though made by Bridgestone, had Moon molded in the sidewalls. The front spindles were Ford Anglia, the front suspension used Volkswagen torsion bars, and the steering box was a Ross from a Crosley. I soon met Boogie and took the chassis to him to do some work on it in order to fit me. After seeing it, he believes it is one of seven dragsters that he built in 1963. Albert Waits, Q-Ball Wales, Dalton Corlett and Pete Mattei were some of the drivers that Boogie built cars for in 1963. It was originally built as a 120 inch wheelbase car but at some point it was lengthened by 15 inches (probably to accommodate the transmission) and is now 135 inches long. He has kept very good records of who he built cars for that year and he was even able to furnish me a copy of his original detailed and dimensional drawings for the car. While Boogie was working on the chassis, I began looking for period correct parts. I purchased a 327 CI small block Chevy motor and Powerglide transmission. I was also able to locate a Hilborn injection system and a Vertex mag. Once I had the chassis back from Boogie, I stripped and repainted both the frame and the body panels and all other components were inspected, cleaned and I began the re-assembly of the car. The brakes required a new master cylinder and lines but other than that they were in good shape and functional. I also had the front axle, wishbones and other smaller parts chrome plated. The old upholstery was in tatters but it did provide a good pattern for the new tuck and roll upholstery. I felt that it wouldn’t be complete without flames and Full Blown Graphics was able to do the old style flames I wanted. With the help of a friend that had experience with Hilborn injection, we fired it up in my driveway and managed to get the tune-up correct easily.

During this time I was also working on modifying a trailer to haul the car and get it set up to unload and load the car by myself. Though I’ve been down a few drag strips since the 60’s, I had never been down one in a dragster and I had told myself while rebuilding this car that I wasn’t going to build it without driving it. My wife, son and some friends went with me to a Test and Tune night at No Problem Raceway and the staff and other racers were patient while we figured out how to belt in, start and stage for the first time. On the first pass, I was tentative and really didn’t try to launch too hard and it seemed as if the car wanted to pull to the right a little so I didn’t do much more than drive it down the track. After it cooled for a while, I went out for another pass and this time I launched it pretty hard and this is what the car seemed to like as it made a very straight and controlled pass. I wasn’t trying to push it and don’t remember what the time was but it wasn’t too shabby for the first time out. Nothing broke and the car and I were still in one piece so I considered that a successful time at the track. I consider myself to be fortunate to be the third owner of this piece of local drag racing history as there are many new “copies” of the old front motor cars but very few that are as original and complete as this one and that is why it’s called “SO RARE”.

The AutoZone Story AutoZone's history started with the vision of one man: J.R. "Pitt" Hyde III. After receiving his bachelor's degree in economics from the University of North Carolina, he joined Malone & Hyde, Inc., a wholesale food company founded by his grandfather. Pitt initiated and developed Malone & Hyde's specialty retailing division, beginning with drug stores and expanding to include sporting goods stores and supermarkets. Pitt saw a need for a retail automotive parts store to help people with the upkeep of their vehicles so he created Auto Shack. He believed that the characteristics found in supermarkets - clean, well-organized store, accessible products and great customer service - could be applied to the automotive parts business. In 1979, his vision became a reality. On July 4, 1979, Auto Shack opened its first store in Forrest City, Arkansas. Doc Crain was the first Auto Shack store manager and sales that day totaled about $300. In 1986, Auto Shack was spun off as a freestanding company of which Pitt served as Chairman and CEO. Today, Auto Shack is AutoZone - a Fortune 500 company and the leading auto parts retailer in the United States with more than $8.1 billion in annual sales. AutoZone continues to fuel growth by exploring new businesses and entering new markets. In 1996, AutoZone launched a commercial program offering credit and delivery to professional technicians. Later, with the purchase of ALLDATA, AutoZone acquired the nation's leading provider of electronic automotive diagnostic and repair software. In 1998, AutoZone expanded its presence outside the U.S. borders to Mexico, opening our first AutoZone de Mexico store in December 1998. AutoZone has come a long way. Today, AutoZone serves customers in 48 states, Mexico and Puerto Rico and employs more than 65,000 employees, referred to as AutoZoners. One of the constant, core foundations to our success has been our strong culture of customer satisfaction. Our Pledge is: "AutoZoners always put customers first! We know our parts and products. Our stores look great! We've got the best merchandise at the right price." AutoZoners do more than simply recite the pledge; they live it every day. Our goal is to provide our customers with Trustworthy Advice and real solutions ensuring the customer has What It Takes To Do The Job Right, or better known to AutoZoners as WITTDTJR®. We are a diverse, rapidly growing company, and there is one key ingredient that keeps AutoZone on the leading edge of the auto parts industry, it's simply providing WOW! Customer Service. No matter where the business takes us in the future, customer satisfaction will remain our number one priority.

A cubby hole by definition is: A space for storing things. The inaugural “Cubby” award made its debut in 2014. The award is a hand crafted hollow wooden box with a hinged top, allowing for memories to be placed inside. These boxes were created and built with my own little paws. This award was created to recognize and celebrate the consummate car enthusiast. There is an entire generation of them…or two or three! The selection criteria was that this award was for people who are in love with their rides, but build their vehicles out of a desire to create, not just to win trophies. I know there are many, many people who deserve a “Cubby”, but the names below were selected for the honor in 2014. These ten people deserved my respect.
The photos included are of the youngest recipient, Schuyler Hart and his 1967 Chevrolet C-10, receiving his award. I hope to see you at the Emerald Coast Cruizin' in Panama City Beach, FL in November.

WAKE UP America ! ! ! At what point do we stop giving away OUR RIGHTS ? We've gone so far the other way . . . bent over backwards not to offend anyone. Only AMERICANS seems to care when American Citizens are being offended ! I Am the man, Liberal-Progressive's Worst Nightmare. I am a White, Conservative, Tax-Paying, American Veteran, Gun Owning Biker. That's me! I work hard and long hours with my hands to earn a living. I believe in God and the freedom of religion, but I don't push it on others. I ride Harley Davidson Motorcycles, and drive Americanmade cars. I believe in American products and buy them whenever I can. I believe the money I make belongs to me and not some liberal governmental functionary, Democratic or Republican, that wants to share it with others who don't work! I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer; it makes you a smart American. I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything. Get over it! I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac or any other item, you should do it in English. I believe there should be no other language option. I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God when and where they want to. And I'm proud that 'God' is written on my money.. My heroes are Malcolm Forbes, Bill Gates, John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Roy Rogers, and Willie G. Davidson, who makes the awesome Harley Davidson Motorcycles. I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor. I know wrestling is fake and I don't waste my time watching or arguing about it. I've never owned a slave, nor was I a slave. I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks, and neither have you! I believe if you don't like the way things are here, go back to where you came from and change your own country! This is AMERICA ...We like it the way it is and more so the way it was ...so stop trying to change it to look like Russia or China, or some other socialist country! If you were born here and don't like it... you are free to move to any Socialist country that will have you. I believe it is time to really clean house, starting with the White House, the seat of our biggest problems. I think the cops have the right to pull you over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are, but not just because you happen to ride a bike. And, no, I don't mind having my face shown on my driver's license. I think it's good.... I dislike those people standing in the intersections trying to sell me stuff or trying to guilt me into making 'donations' to their cause....Get a job and do your part to support yourself and your family! I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents.... We've bent over to appease the America-haters long enough. I'm taking a stand. This statement DOES NOT mean I'm against immigration ! YOU ARE WELCOME HERE, IN MY COUNTRY, welcome to come legally: 1. Get a sponsor 2. Learn the LANGUAGE, as immigrants have in the past ! 3. Live by OUR rules ! 4. Get a job ! 5. Pay YOUR Taxes ! 6. No Social Security until you have earned it and Paid for it ! 7. NOW find a place to lay your head ! I'm standing up because of the hundreds of thousands who died fighting in wars for this country, and for the American flag. Let me make this clear! THIS IS MY COUNTRY !

- Public Welcome -
GOD SAID : "Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, milkweeds and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect nomaintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the longlasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles." ST. FRANCIS: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers 'weeds' and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass. GOD: Grass? But, it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It's sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there? ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn. GOD: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy. ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it-sometimes twice a week. GOD: They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay? ST.. FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags. GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it? ST. FRANCIS: No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away. GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away? ST. FRANCIS: Yes, Sir. GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work. ST. FRANCIS: You aren't going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it, so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it. GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It's a natural cycle of life. ST.. FRANCIS: You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away. GOD: No!? What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose? ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves. GOD: And where do they get this mulch? ST. FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch. GOD: Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you're
in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight? ST. CATHERINE: 'Dumb and Dumber', Lord. It's a story about.... GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.

Most of the old dirt tracks are gone, housing sub divisions are on the acres that fans traveled miles to watch the events from the grandstands. The tracks were usually a ¼ mile dirt with 45` banks in the corners and 15` down the front and rear stretches. A big ¼ was 1/4 on the pole (inside) of the track, and a small ¼ on the outside. J.C. Aggajainan, known to the racing community as “Aggie” built a ½ mile dirt with a ¼ inside by using the front straightaway for both tracks. In Los Angeles they built this track called “Ascot Park” and it was fast! A little known fact was his brother Ben Aggajainian was a professional field goal kicker in the late 30's and early 40's. Ben retired and opened a “Sports Clothing” store in Long Beach, Calif. I still have one of my racing jackets with his label on it “Aggie Sporting Goods”. The track (Ascot) was located on 176th ST. and Vermont. Before the San Diego freeway went in, the main ½ mile was Carroll Speedway. The San Diego Freeway ran right through the middle of it. So in 1957 Aggie (JC) bought it and built Ascot Park. The original track name was Legion Ascot located in Southgate during the 30's. Ascot Park was built in the early 1950's and stands would hold 7500 max. Midgets, Sprints, Stocks, and even figure 8 races. An interesting point was the clay dirt came from the cemetery across the street and north about a mile. It was prophetic that races were running on dirt from graves from that cemetery. One of my casual race car driving friends was Johnny Woods. He was driving a Sprint car down the straight (going about 90-100 mph. The story goes that his throttle stuck wide open and he hit the wall head on. No broken bones but he swallowed his dental plate and choked to death. (Bad way to go) When Aggie held “Turkey Nite” that was the midget race of the year. Most Eastern tracks were closed in November. So everybody came to Ascot for Turkey Nite. Last time I ran it (in the 50's) I think 1957 105 cars showed up. They ran 28 cars in the main, 18 in the semi. About 25 miles north of LA is a former rodeo grounds stadium with a ¼ track inside of it. I won 2 mains there and it was a real “bull ring”. I also ran my factory owned 1956 Chevy there. I got a 6th in a 200 lap race. I qualified 2nd quick and had to start in the back of 33 cars on the ¼ mile on the fence bull ring. This was one of the first USAC Stock Cars races on the West Coast. You will note that in the Midget photo the 6” high steel railing on the inside of each corner. Also note the left front tire, on my car has lifted about 6 inches up as I got on the throttle. That's me in the 54 car I had to tape over the 5 of 55 so I could still run URA and not be thrown out for running USAC. Today they can run anywhere and with anybody. That's Bud Clemons in #14 Offy behind, me (former Indy 500 entrant). I'm in my flathead V-8-60 . His car (midget) was known as “Surdos” Offy”. Another “Bull Ring” was in Arizona called South Mountain Speedway. Bobby Ball, (great driver) drove the midget owned by Ernie Mohammed, construction guru.
In the early 50's Bobby went over to San Jose, Calif. won the main event the early week in December. He came back 3 weeks later and got himself killed at Carroll Speedway in Los Angeles. My favorite track In the Midwest was the ¼ mile high bank at Springfield, Illinois. It was owned and operated by Joe Shaheen who had an Indy car and promoted most of his races at his track the nite before (Saturday Nite) the mile fair grounds. Both were dirt tracks and were fast! When you're watching NASCAR and the announcer mentions Ron Shaheen his son? I'm sure some of his dad's pals got him in there. All you Cruisers take note: I am restoring 1940 Ford 2 door. I also have a 1995 -S- 10 Pick Up with a “built” 350 Chevy in it. Give me a call for more info. Don't forget my 1969 Cougar XR7. To book DD Thunders Band : ddthunders100@yahoo.com All summer long I have been teased by movie trailers that show good looking drama is coming my way. Where are they? Hollywood has had a weak summer and they keep pushing the release dates back of promising films and sending fluff, almost good and pure cinema crap to our local cineplexes. I tried to be smart with my movie ticket money and this is what was left after the cinema carnage I put myself through. First up is a musical drama titled The Identical. It stars Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd and Blake Rayne. This sad little movie is a not so loosely based tale about Elvis Pressley and a stillborn twin. The premise goes like this, what if Elvis's twin brother didn't die at birth and they both live separate lives that cross paths later. One boy grows up to be a musical superstar in the other leads a simple life but is haunted by an ordinary but on-field life. I was interested in the storyline since I've been a rockabilly musician for years and Elvis is Ground Zero for all things rockabilly. I was very disappointed in this 107 minute piece of melodrama that had me wishing I could rewrite history and get my ticket money back before the credit started rolling! This movie was just plain awful. Ashley Judd was lackluster and Ray Liotta was far from his glory days. He was even a producer of this fiasco. Elvis impersonator Blake Rayne tried his best, I would looked like, his first and last acting job. Most of the music was based on Elvis's 70s era output and the ill fitting wigs, bellbottoms and feeble soundtrack just added to the overall sad feeling of this big bomb. I can't say anything more about this film except I give it 4 out of 10 pics.
his family and his first true love. Actress Charlotte Le Bon hold her own with a solid performance as a French chef who shows the Indian family some compassion and pays the price for it. I won't spoil the outcome of this lighthearted, well paced, feel good movie. You can probably tell what's coming at the end and that's the only complaint I have with this film is the classic Hollywood happy ending. This lighthearted, well done, end of summer love story had some power brokers behind it. When a small independent film has executive producers like Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey you can only hope for a good outcome and we got it this time. Get this film eight out of 10 pics. Keep those comments coming to ddthunders100@yahoo.com and thanks for your continued support for my column. See you at the matinees DD
DD’s music reflects many years of experience from many walks of life. An accomplished guitarist and a natural showman, DD's knack for improvisation lends itself to a unique experience that never repeats itself. From his early years as frontman of the seminal skate rock band No Rules, recording contracts and touring provides a stylized presentation of many styles of music. His love of rockabilly, jazz, swing, country, standards, punk, americana provides a broad canvas that is constantly evolving.
Next up is a comedy titled Let's Be Cops. As I have said before, I'm not a big fan of comedies but I needed some cheering up after "The Identical" beat down I took. Not only did I not get cheered up but got a double fisted film shout that I probably deserved. This film suffered a common situation where the trailers are way better than the actual movie. Where did all the laughs go? The film stars Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans and Rob Riggle. Comedic actor Rob Riggle was the only thing good about this bad comedy. He has done some great work in the hangover franchise but couldn't save this unfunny farce. Damon Wayans deadpan straight man routine to Jake Johnson's week performance was hard to watch. I don't remember anyone laughing out loud in the theater. I tried not to cry as I headed for the exit before the out take clips and credits started rolling. ABI should have stayed, they were probably funnier than the actual movie. I give this sad little comedy five out of 10 pics. I always save the best for last and I'm excited about the movie, The Hundred Foot Journey. It stars Helen Mirren, Om Pyri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Lebon. Director Lasse Hallstrom did a good job with this multi layered Story of family loyalty, young love and destiny. The attention to detail and cinematography was a great aid to this simple, but interesting story. The movie is based on an Indian family who loses their family restaurant in flees their homeland from oppression. After a short stay in England they find their way to France and set up shop. The father/ matriarch of the family makes a decision to open a new Indian style restaurant right across the street from Helen Mirren characters established formal French cuisine restaurant. Culture clash tells this well written story. Plenty of laughs, romance, young and old love make this film a must see for anyone who has a passion for food loving life. Helen Mirren gives another dry, stoic Academy award-winning performance as a cold, distant restaurant owner who has her life turned upside down. Who discovers that changing things up sometimes can be a good thing in life business and love. I really enjoyed actor, Manish Dayal's portrayal of a young man destined to be a star in the culinary world. He finds love, fortune and fame but has difficulty dealing with the pressures of leaving

Photography by Atomic Ashley My grandfather Jack Sr., born in the 1900's, (the original purchaser of the truck) was of Austrian descent. He immigrated to Louisiana as a teenager, and settled in New Orleans. He became a U.S. Citizen and served his country proudly as a Merchant Marine during times of war. He worked in a high end hotel in downtown New Orleans and specialized in furniture refinishing. After retiring, he opened a paint store on historic Magazine street and earned a reputation for caning antique chairs. He was a radio personality know as "Pedro" and called in daily to speak with or play his organ on the Keith Rush WSMB talk show. His 53 Chevy Truck was used for two purposes: 1.To pick up & deliver furniture for customers and 2. To take his grandson (me, the future owner) fishing at Delacroix Island in the 60's. These fishing trips started by loading a 12’ fiberglass skiff powered by a 50's Western Auto Wizard outboard motor in the truck bed. Then we'd stop at Battistella's restaurant in the French Market prior to sunrise and pick up two roast beef poboys for lunch later in the day. We caught croakers and used any catfish caught as crab bait on hand lines (didn't need crab nets). These fishing trips slowed down because Hurricane Betsy destroyed his camp. In 1983, after a near life ending auto accident, he gave the then 30 year old truck to my dad Jack Jr. and it had less than 19,000 original miles on the odometer - Grandpa died in 1985. The only maintenance performed on the truck by dad was rebuilding the brakes and replacing the gas tank. The truck primarily remained parked in the carport for the next 30 years and wet the appetite of many car enthusiasts who would stop by and offer dad money, or ask for a promise to contact them first before selling this rust free gem. Fast forward to hurricane Katrina, where the truck escaped damaged since it was located in Metairie, La vs. being at my house in Chalmette, which received 10’ of Gulf water from the MRGO. After I relocated to Baton Rouge, the truck with only 20,000 miles was transferred one last time to me, the grandson of the original owner where it sat for 2 years with the promise of resurrecting a piece of family history.
My wife of 38 years said, "Why let the truck waste away? Get a professional to take on the task of restoring grandpa's truck." I contacted local car clubs, auto shops, and started researching people who could perform both frame on and frame off restorations. After driving around South Louisiana and visiting a few shops, we ended up at B&B in Picayune, MS. Barry Barone walked us through his shop, discussed a complete frame off restoration, and showed us several vehicles under construction. We didn't need to look any further and 2 weeks later the truck was picked up on a flatbed and started its journey to a new life. 14 months later, several trips to B&B during the restore, and grandpa's truck is finally coming home. My goal is to drive it to the retirement community and show my 90 year old father how his gift to me of his dad's truck has been given a new lease on life. I want to drive the truck on weekends and when the great-great grand kids of the original owner come in from out of town or out of state; to pile in and head to the beignet shop, church, or market. I look forward to driving this restored vehicle for the next 30 years and then pass it along to my children, and eventually to theirs. I don't know how long it will stay in the family bloodlines of the original owner, but I'm thinking at least 100 years and who knows after that. One thing for sure as I'm tooling around the streets, I'll remember being 12 again back in the 60's driving next to my grandpa or my dad going down the street. Grandpa and Battistella's are gone and so is the camp in Delacroix Island, but the "53" lives on. Jean & Richard

How men and women record things in their diaries Wife's Diary: Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, "Nothing." I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior. I don't know why he didn't say, "I love you, too." When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster. …...Michelle Husband's Diary: A two-foot putt ... how can anyone miss a two -foot putt ? …. Barry
Chances are when it’s time to take your car to a mechanic, or get the paint and body work done on your classic car, you have researched the person you are taking it to. Maybe it was on the recommendation of a friend or maybe you stopped by to check them out. What if you had to make the decision about a family matter like, what doctor or dentist to take care of your family. You would want to go to someone you could trust. And know they had the experience to do the job right. Imagine having to stand in front of a Judge, knowing they will be making the decision that may affect you. Wouldn’t you want to know the Judge had the actual experience handling complex litigation when making that decision. If you live in Harrison, Hancock or Stone County, here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, you will have to make a decision when you cast your vote November 4th. I ask you to join us in this grass roots effort to get Myles Sharp elected Circuit Court Judge. He's the one with the most experience, not the most family money. Help us elect Myles Sharp as our next Circuit Court Judge. Myles has extensive experience trying cases in all state and federal courts throughout South MS.

In 1979, my dad bought me a 1969 Olds Cutlass convertible for graduation from high school. The car was purchased from my uncle David Reynolds from Jackson. I put thousands of miles on that car with the top down, summer and winter. Like the story goes, drove the car till the wheels fell off. I then sold it, not really realizing what I had. Fast forward to 2007 after Katrina, I decided I wanted another Olds Cutlass. I found one in Memphis, TN. Rented a car, drove up, turned around and drove home in my 1969 Olds convertible. It was October, and I drove all the way home with the top down, windows up and the heater on. After driving the car over the newly opened Ocean Springs/Biloxi Bridge, I started a 4 ½ year project of a complete frame off restoration.
Eddie Flavian of Ocean Springs was the man I chose for the job. I ordered a new motor from Mondello Performance in California. It is a 455 bored over to 470 C.I. with over 500 HP and close to 600ft/lb of torque. The first thing Eddie said was, “You are setting the bar very high, it is going to grow out of control quickly!” The car has 4-wheel disc brakes, A/C, coil over front shocks, 4-point rear suspension, 9” Ford rear end, 4L60E transmission, and ultra leather and ostrich interior. I've enjoyed building the car and using it, but it is time for a new owner to enjoy. The car appraised for insurance value for $120K. I have invested almost $100K in the restoration. The car is for sale or trade for $75K…. Tom - 228-617-3048
