By: Jimbo Well March is here and the promises of warm spring (March 20th) weather is just around the corner. Looking at the event schedule the next few months will be very busy. There are car shows and cruise-in’s taking place every weekend somewhere close to where you live. It’s imposable to make them all. I look forward to making the shows I can. Taking off from the daily grind and getting away takes some planning. Deadlines are just that… miss the date and time and you have to wait till the next spot opens. In the February NSRA Streetscene (Street Rodding’s original news monthly) Tom Vogele article included a thought provoking time line that reinforces something most of us jus don’t think about. The last few months we said good-by to some larger than life legends in the Hot Rodding world. Also local legends in our own communities. No getting around it we are getting’ older and the list of things to do seems to grow each week. On page four Bob found an article from the Simple Truth by Jeffrey Cannon. (April 4, 2011) that just may give you a new way of looking at the plans you make. This month is the Atomic Blast at Gulfport Dragway. This a family friendly event and even if you just come to watch you’ll have a good time. The vehicles at this show are unique and the drivers put them to the test. Don't miss Hot Rod Walt and the Psycho-DeVilles Friday night April 1st at the Gulf Coast Auto Show, Gulfport, MS. (I-10 exit 34) Michael's Night Club. VIP and special room rates at Best Western Plus 228-864-0050 Here are a few e-mails Jimbo, Everyone knows the old saying Murphy’s law but did you know there is also MURPHY'S LESSER KNOWN LAWS 1. You can tell that Murphy was a real thinker… jideclark@ Jimbo, I retired a few years ago and with a lot of time on my hands, became interested in the antique car shows in the area. I started thinking about the trophies and decided to see if I could come up with a more personalized version. I incorporated a frame attached to a wood look plaque. A picture of the owners car can be placed in the frame. The church I attended had a yearly show, so I offered to make the trophies for the show. They were a big success. I contacted a few other shows and did a couple more. I have decided to start a home business of making trophies. I just want to do a few shows a year just to keep busy. If anyone is interested in pictures and prices they can send me an e-mail vicl1934@gmail.com or give me a phone call at 850-497-0756. Vic Lakatos Vic, ….It seems like the reality of retirement is trying to supplement your income. Most of the retired folks I talk to are working each day at something. Keeping busy contributing to the community they live in or building a little savings for the rainy day that we all know will come.

Thanks for taking the ad. I hope some of our readers will consider what you have to offer. (page 63) Jimbo, One dark night outside a small town in Louisiana, a fire started inside the local chemical plant and in a blink of an eye it exploded into massive flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments for miles around. When the volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the chemical company president rushed to the fire chief and said, "All our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved. I will give $50,000 to the fire department that brings them out intact." But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in as the situation became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer was now $100,000 to the fire department who could bring out the company's secret files. From the distance, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was from a nearby Cajun rural township volunteer fire company composed mainly of Cajun’s over the age of 65. To everyone's amazement, that little run-down fire engine roared right past all the newer sleek engines that were parked outside the plant. Without even slowing down it drove straight into the middle of the inferno. Outside, the other firemen watched as the Cajun old timers jumped off right in the middle of the fire fought it back on all sides. It was a performance and effort never seen before. Within a short time, the Cajun old timers had extinguished the fire and had saved the secret formulas. The grateful chemical company president announced that for such a superhuman feat he was upping the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave fire fighters. The local TV news reporter rushed in to capture the event on film, asking their chief, "What are you going to do with all that money?" "I tell ya one ting," said Thibodeaux, the 70-year-old fire chief, "De first ting we gonna did,….. is fix dem brakes on dat truck! ezcajun@ I took time out to stop by the Benefit Car Show for heart bypass recipient Michele Larkey at Slap Ya Mommas Smokehouse & BBQ on Hwy 90, Biloxi, MS. What a great turn out. Great to see the mix of all the cars/trucks from a lot of different clubs. If this is a sample turn out of car folks showin’ up to MS Coast car shows, we are in for large turn outs and good times to come.

On the Front Porch On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" And God saw it was good. On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God, again saw it was good. On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years." The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed it was good. On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God, "You asked for it." So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you. There is no need to thank me for this valuable information. I'm doing it as a public service. If you are looking for me I will be on the front porch. Sent in by JIDECLARK@

THE WAY I SEE IT

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage - February 2016

Simple Truth

Its a long way to Mississippi.

By Jeffrey Cannon Let’s start by taking five minutes to do a very simple exercise. Open up a tape measure and extend it to eighty-five inches. Don’t just visualize it, take the time to find a tape measure and extend it. Those eighty-five inches are the average lifespan of a person, more or less. Now, measure out your age in inches. Do you see what is left? That is how much time you most likely have. Sure, you may live past that. You may also get hit by a bus before it. Just realize that if you are forty-five years old you most likely have thirty-five years left to live your life. At the same time, it is just as important to realize that everything you have done, every precious memory, every little adventure, everything that you know or have even forgotten up to this point has been rolled into whatever inches you measured out. If you are only half-way to eighty-five then you could do everything that you have ever experienced all over again. If you are in your twenties, you can live all of your current life over again four times. This should be you wakeup call. No matter how many inches you have left, your life is far from over. Even if you only have a few years remaining, or even a few days, why would you want to spend them by doing anything less than by being true to YOURSELF? Look down at your tape measure again. No matter how many are stretched out before you, each mark should be a call for celebration because you can have that much more to experience. Each mark should also be a reminder to be careful of how you spend your time. Cherish it. Protect it. Most important enjoy it. It is the one commodity you cannot save, you cannot lock away, and you can never get back. Every second is an investment in your future. So spend it wisely. Because even if you don't spend it, once it is gone it is gone forever. So invest a few seconds to be aware of how you spend your time. Invest the time to be mindful of the things you do so that you do good things. Invest the time to give to others and to help others. Make sure you invest your time wisely because that is what it is, an investment. Make sure that when you give it to someone else, you give it out carefully, as you would with money. When you do spend it, make sure that you spread it evenly and lovingly. That is the best way to garner a positive return on your investment in your time. Above all, and most important, make sure you keep some for yourself. That can often be the best way to invest your most precious commodity – by saving some for yourself. Simple-truth.com

The number two sons high school ride was finished and the number one son had his little S-10 out and about painted nicely, and both were heading out to car shows and enjoying the truck and car scene with their friends. I was kind of out of projects since I had gotten rid of a bike and a recently done gmc pick me up truck to purchase a brand new one, the garage was kind of silent. Until a friend had asked me to help with his build. He had seen some of the things we had done with the kids trucks and some of my past projects and asked if I would help. Little did we both know it would be a sizeable task, we had both rebuilt things but neither of us had built something from scratch. His project was a 33 Ford Coupe that would in our estimation have to be cool. It spent a few years at my garage while he and I both built brackets, modified pieces and prepped and primed parts, and assembling and taking apart regularly to guarantee a perfect fit and eventually finish. He wired a tuned port injected motor and we both discovered how to manipulate stock computer controls to suit the needs of what we wanted these machines to do. As a result of all of this work he told me we were going to attend the twenty fifth Street Rod Nationals in Louisville Kentucky. I had never heard of this and he had been attempting to describe it to me. I later learned its hard to explain it its just easier if you let someone experience it, its is that kind of thing. We drove the primered 33 to Louisville in 94, yes it was unfinished but we both had a blast on the road there and back. I had now been introduced to the largest gathering of pre 48 hot rods that I had ever seen in one place. I was a kid in a candy store too in the vendor area . So many parts and so many cars in one place, to say I was overwhelmed with sights and ideas is just an understatement. Did I mention a swap meet, there was a very large one there too. Lots of stuff to do as well. Tech seminars, a pros pick area, and a few nights there were bands to entertain the crowds in a large arena. To a first time visitor to this such as me it was a sensory overload event. And one day they gave away a finished hotrod to some lucky participant. How cool was that I thought. Before leaving for Louisville I had informed my wife there would be a good chance while there I would probably start my dream project. The garage was empty and I needed to begin to fill it with something and a 32 Ford roadster fit that need perfectly. While in Louisville a body from Hastings and a chassis from TCI would be ordered. Got the chassis later in the fall and it would be the following January before we could go get the body. I was going to build my childhood dream machine finally. The wife was not so impressed when the frame had arrived, it wasn't until we picked up the body that she realized just what I was attempting to do. I had spent the next few years in the putting together and taking apart of my dream ride, until the fall of 97 when sitting on a wooden turtle foot stool, I cranked up the little hotrod and took a first drive around the block. There would still be many refinements made and upholstery needed to be done but my dream ride had become a reality. But it was still a ways away to Mississippi. Lets go fly a kite, Later Gizmo.

When Johnny was young he started working on cars at a gas station then he took auto mechanics in high school. Before he had his driver license he built & drove a Round Track Dirt Race Car which he continued to do for twenty-five years, race on Saturday's then work and check the car over at night to get ready for the next race always trying to get the edge on the other guys. He says that building Rat Rodz are just like building a race car without a roll cage. He always said that you want them to not only run & sound good but they have to be unique one-of-a-kind. That's were his creativity & the originality not to mention his imagination has a big part of his one of kind rides which you can see in the finished product. Working with metal is his passion that's slowly becoming a lost art. Johnny works at ERT Compliance Coke plant in Birmingham, AL as a mulitcraft millwrights man, welding, fabricating & doing industrial maintenance daily. But at night you will most likely find him and his best helper, his dog, Roxie (would be great if she had thumbs) up in his shop

working on a new build. Johnny has been known to get up in the middle of the night when he comes up with a new idea and work in the shop all night. Just like with racing, his whole family shares his passion for Rat Rodz. We go to local Cruisin’s and save vacation days so we can go to Gulfport for the Atomic Blast each year, Emerald Coast in Panama City, Redneck Rumble in Lebanon, TN, Beatersville in Louisville, KY, Coker Tire-Honest Charley in Chattanooga, TN., the Nashville Boogie and the World of Wheels Car show in Birmingham, AL. At each show you will find Johnny willing and able to tell you every aspect of his build. When the young kids come around he lights up with excitement and is willing to share all his knowledge, some of them even get in to experience it for themselves. He has given many rides to people that just wanted to see what it was like to ride in something unique and homegrown.

The Cole Report

Jimbo, We been making a few shows and cruise-ins even with the cold weather. Made the trip over to Covington for the Winter Rod this is always a good one. Our next big stop was the Winter Classic at Gulfport Dragway this is their first race of the year. They also had swap meet along with the racing. They had several vendors with used engine, suspension, body parts and wheels/tires. I even seen a certain someone leaving with some nice Whitewall radial tires loaded in the back of their Model A. Along with these events we also squeezed in some cruiseins. So fill those tanks up and get out in the nicer weather that’s coming. See y'all somewhere or everywhere, remember to watch for our friends on bikes out riding also.

We’re getting ready to head down to the Lakeland/Tampa FL market to play for three days with The Hot Rod Show at the Winter Florida AutoFest. The Hot Rod Show will play Friday, Saturday and Sunday February 26-28. Looking at the forecast for next week, the weather looks great, low 70’s in the daytime and 50”s at night with the largest chance of rain being 20%. Carlisle Events puts on two shows a year in Lakeland, the other being the Fall Florida AutoFest November 10-13, 2016. The company has been putting on car events for 42 years. Here’s what is featured at the Winter show…a 400 plus classic car show with Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show, over 1,000 vendor Swap Meet, over 400 cars in their classic car auction, a car corral, carnival midway food village, Tom Wopat, “Luke Duke” of the Dukes of Hazzard TV Series signing autographs, rides available in bi-planes and helicopters, plus a airplanemotorcoach concours. You know I like to do a military salute to kick off the Hot Rod Show, well they have scheduled a vintage airplane flyover during the national anthem each day. You can actually fly right into the show and park your airplane next to your motorcoach! Looks like a lot of fun, can’t wait to hit the road and we’ll tell you all about our experience in next month’s column.

You probably saw Gulfport’s retro police car during Cruisin The Coast. The first thing I thought of was the Mayberry squad car from the Andy Griffith Show. I half expected to see Barney Fife get out of the car and write Goober a ticket for illegal U-turn! But I knew it was coming, because my grandson-in-law, DJ Sears painted it where he works. But when I saw how cool it turned out, I knew there had to be a great story behind it. I called RLee Flowers, Gulfport City Councilman, to get the scoop. RLee said he and the mayor, Billy Hewes got approval for the project, but to get the story I needed to talk with Klain Garriga who is the Support Bureau Commander of the Gulfport Police Department. I got Klain on the phone and we met over at his shop in Bayou View Subdivision in Gulfport. It was funny when he told me how to get to his shop, because I had pointed the shop out to Scotty a few times, the last time a week before. I would see it lighted at night and I would tell her I’d buy that house just to get that guys shop. A week later I was inside it. Real! According to Klain he first brought this Fairlane project up to Chief Leonard Papania in 2013 and they kicked it around some and it got shoved to the back burner. In 2014 Klain found a 1964 Ford Fairlane on Craig’s List and sent his Shop Manager, Roger Gibson and their body man to inspect the car in Petal, MS. The report was good, the car was solid, everything was there. All the chrome pieces and stainless pieces that are so hard to find were there. The guy that owned the car agreed to hold it for the city. He was excited that his car was going to be restored into an official police car and he could see it each year when he came down for CTC. Klain and Chief Papania had already decided that the money for the car would come from confiscated drug dealer money and not the tax payers of Gulfport. The money was approved and the car was purchased and taken to the police shop. About that time Gulfport Police

and Fire maintenance had been combined into the police garage which increased the workload of the shop so the Fairlane got off to a slow start. As Cruisin The Coast started to close-in on them Klaine met with Hal Hilton, the manager of Advanced Collision Services in Gulfport and asked for their help to get the car painted. Hal inspected the car, found it had been painted a few times over the years, got with the owner Tim Magee and they agreed to donate the body and paint work to the city for the project. The car was stripped to the bare body, the body work was completed, and the paint work was done. During this time the guys back at the shop had gotten the engine and transmission work done. All the pieces and side projects were done and ready… but it all had to be put back together and in a hurry. Three weeks until Cruisin The Coast… Hal and the Advanced Collision Services crew get the paint and body work finished and get it back to Police shop. The police shop guys get the engine, transmission, all the drivetrain in the car and working well. The car has the original numbers matching 268 Ford engine and all new floor pans. Original front and rear suspension. It’s time to put the Fairlane Project into high gear to get this car finished, CTC is coming fast. Next they have to get the car over to Brian Hagwood and Pops Moran at Headliners Plus to get the interior installed. It was starting to look like one of those reality shows like Gas Monkey Garage or Bitchin Rides with the speed everything was having to get completed. Next Ray Hanes over at Dunaway Glass had ordered the glass for the car, they called Ray on Thursday before Cruisin The Coast started and said they were ready for the new windshield and rear glass to be installed. Ray said he would unpack the glass from the crate and be over there to install it soon. Ray opened the crate and there was only the rear glass in the crate, no front windshield. Oh boy! Isn’t there always something at the last minute when you’re doing a project that has a definite deadline that happens…that just drives you crazy? Well this was one of those!!! Now it’s Thursday before CTC starts on Sunday. So the guys had to call everyone in the country… all the way to Tennessee looking for a windshield for a 1964 Ford Fairlane. Nobody had one. It’s not something you can just call up a glass company and order off the shelf. Klaine called a friend of his in Popular Bluff, Missouri, a guy named Phil Childers that owned a car dealership, Childress Auto Sales. Phil was coming to Cruisin The Coast and Klaine asked Phil if he knew of anyone in his part of the country that had a windshield. Phil said yes I think I know a lady that will have it. She owns Phillips Classic Auto Glass here in town and she will have one. It seems her late husband would buy the entire inventories of glass from the manufacturers. When Ford, Chevrolet or Dodge would stop producing a model of car Mr. Phillips would buy up all their inventory of

glass. All of it. Mrs. Phillips had two windshields for a 1964 Ford Fairlane in stock, the best one still in the original Motorcraft wrapping. Arrangements were made for payment. Phil, Klaine’s friend had already left for Cruisin The Coast. They arranged for a driver from the dealership to bring the windshield to Gulfport. At 2 pm Friday afternoon the windshield was placed in the back seat of a Chevy extended cab pickup surrounded by pillows and driven to Gulfport. The windshield arrived in Gulfport at 10 pm Friday night. Saturday morning Ray came over from Dunaway Glass and put the rope around the windshield and got it installed. The car was complete, less than 24 hours before it was to be used in the CTC kickoff event, View The Cruise in downtown Gulfport. The classic police cruiser was a smashing hit during Cruisin The Coast. The PR value of this old squad car is priceless. The goodwill produced by this car for kids and adults is not something you can put a number on, it is truly priceless. It will be used for special events like CTC, Mardi Gras and parades. I knew there had to be a great story behind this car…and if this car could talk I’m sure it’s seen a lot in its 52 years and to end its run as an official police car, there has to be a smile somewhere hidden deep inside that grill. Next month we’ll take you on the trip to the Tampa/Lakeland area for the Winter Florida AutoFest. In May, we’ll take you to the show we are doing March 12 northwest of Baton Rouge to a quaint little town called New Roads… down on the banks of the False River for the 7th Annual Spring Street Festival Car Show. June we’ll be covering the big 500 plus

Within two months of the December 7, 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor, the last civilian cars came off the assembly lines and the automobile plants were frantically re-tooling to military-only production of armaments, munitions, trucks, tanks, Jeeps, bombs, torpedoes, steel helmets, and airplanes under massive contracts issued by the United States Government. This was quite lucrative financially to the manufacturers. By December 1942, Detroit, Michigan had become the “Arsenal of Democracy”. The automakers did not resume civilian production of automobiles and trucks until the war ended in October, 1945. United States manufacture of automobiles halted completely. One Chevrolet factory in Michigan was renamed the Saginaw Service Manufacturing plant and produced all of General Motors vital replacement parts that were needed to keep the nations privately owned cars and trucks running. Chevrolet devoted the rest of its capacity to the military. Later in 1942, General Motors had 400,000 employees at 112 plants devoting 95% of the company output to the war effort. G.M. boosted output 50% above pre-war levels. Many 1941 Plymouth P11 sedans were ordered by the military, with the Army requiring olive drab paint and the Navy using civilian paint. Modifications could include lighting, sirens, and oil filters. The car was produced with 4 doors and the standard Plymouth 201 cubic inch 6 cylinder engine, which produced 87 horsepower. It was produced with a three speed manual transmission with low gear ratios. Ford halted civilian production by February 10, 1942. All Fords built after that date were spirited away to government warehouses or turned over to the military. Despite Henry Ford’s anti-war views, his company contributed heroically to the war effort. Overnight, Charlie Sorensen and a few others had turned from cranking out Fords to building B-24 bombers, Jeeps, tank engines, and a wide array of other military hardware.

In addition to the ban on the production and sale of cars for private use, residential and highway construction was halted, and driving for pleasure was banned. Strategic good-including tires, gasoline, fuel oil, and sugar-were rationed beginning in 1942. Reducing private consumption of these goods freed up material resources that were vital to the war effort. The year 1942 witnessed the greatest expansion of industrial output in the nation’s history. It was all for military use. From the beginning of 1942 the United far exceeded its goal of 60,000 airplanes turning out a staggering 229,600 aircraft, a fleet so vast it is difficult to visualize.

The speed of this conversion from a peacetime to a wartime economy was stunning. The power of the timely conversion tipped the scales in favor of the Allied Forces, reversing the tide of war. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill often quoted his Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey: “The United States is like a giant boiler. Once the fire is lighted under it, there is no limit to the power it can generate.” The War Production Board was dissolved shortly after the defeat of Japan in 1945, and was replaced by the Civilian Production Administration later in 1945. Commercial institutions like banks who had bought billions of dollars of bonds and other treasury papers during the war years, were estimated to be holding more than 24 billion dollars by the end of the war. The United States auto manufacturers and their highly skilled and patriotic workers, along with the brave men and women fighting on the front lines all contributed to the outcome of World War II. Our gratitude goes out to each and every one of them.

Robust and rugged in design, the Willys MB is a US army jeep that was manufactured during the time period of 1941 to 1945 along with association from Ford GPW. The car is designed with a four wheel drive facility that was considered symbolic an iconic to the World War II, the battle ground that inspired the concept of light weight vehicles. It was with time that this jeep was modified and inspired into new renovated model with CJ Civilian Jeep that was launched in the market as a competitor of the Kübelwagen model belonging to Volkswagen. It was initially prototyped in the year of 1938 which was associated with a small vehicle that utilized air cooler engine option and was not provided with four wheel driving system. The light weight jeep of Willys MB was assembled at the Toledo of Ohio and was replaced by the new model of Willys M38. The car was designed in 2 door body style that was equipped with frontal engine and four wheel driving layout. It has an engine of 134 cu inches, 3 speed manual transmission and wheelbase of 80 inches or 2,032 mm to make it powerful and high performing. The length of this car is 131 in (3,327 mm) while the width is 62 in (1,575 mm) and height is 72 in (1,829 mm). Its curb weight is calculated to 2,293 lb and is associated with the Ford GPA model of Jeep. By the time this gets to print, the Dayton 500 will have run Feb. 21st. Tony Stewart got hurt in a Sand Buggy (according to the news print) and we wish him a speedy recovery! Daytona is a NASCAR thing, and NASCAR had the "handle" on anything with fenders, (that's on nationwide TV) and its a great show! In the early "50's" the big draws in Calif. were Culver City, (1/4 mile) Gardena (Western Speedway) 1//4 mile, and Ascot Park (1/2 mile). As a humorous note, when "Aggie" (J. C. Agajanian) bought the ground, and started building the 1/2 mile, with a 1/4 mile inside the 1/2, using the front straight-away for both 1/2 & 1/4 mile. All the dirt came from the graveyard, a mile up the road. This became a common practice when building a new track, so as to have both midgets and sprints use the track. (Sometimes both ran on a "Split" program, but it was tough to come up with enough purse money. I've mentioned midget engines such as Ford V-8 60's, Offenhauers, 2 cylinder "Drake" (Harley modifieds) Outboards, Chevy II's, Sesco (V-8 cut in half lengthwise) and the "Drake" was a 2 cylinder Harley built by Dale Drake of "Myer Drake Offenhauser" who also built the "Offy" midgets engine (90 to 110 cu. in.) Sprint Engines 220 cu. in., Indy 500 engines 270 cu. in., and they all were very fast! Ski Redican, good old time midget driver, has a son, Johnny Redican who drove for me many times when I was in Calif. We were pals also, and when it was late at nite & I had a few, I used to sleep over at Johnny's. Anyway, Dale Drake or somebody at Myer Drake Offenhauser cut a 4 cylinder 270 "Offy" in half, and built a midget engine, (135 cu. - 2 cylinders. and was legal back then) for midgets. So, they hired Johnny Redican to drive it at Ascot the 1st nite out! Johnny set fast time on his 1st lap out, and the engine "blew up" on the last turn of the 2nd lap. As I remember, you could take the bore & stroke of a Harley out to 1000 cc's. (91 cu. in. prox) and you saved over 100 lbs in weight! The most successful car that I know of that ran the "Drake" 2 cylinder was Harry Stockman at Gilmore in the 1940's, and was so successful in the Drake he got a "ride" in 1946 at the Indy 500! Eddie Myer, Dale Drake, and Leo Goosen were the brains & talent behind the Offenhauser Legend! I didn't mention the V-4 engine I ran for a while in my midget. It was Chevy 350 cut in half, and was one fast unit! It wouldn't stay together, so I went to Dave Schneider of Schneider Cams in San Diego (good friend of mine & my camshaft supplier) and he sat me down, and said "Larry that engine will never work out until you coupler balance it!" That was enough to make me put out the word, and I sold it immediately! In closing, I apologize to my pal (former midget driver) in Florida for not getting into VW'S midgets, but they came along later. (maybe I can get him to write up & we can use it next time!) Let’s All Go To the Drive-In By Candy Cocktail For many of us, drive-in movie theaters hold a special place in our hearts and memories. When we see John Travolta sing ‘Stranded at the Drive -In’ in the movie Grease or when Ponyboy met Cherry in The Outsiders, it brings back memories of rows of beautiful classic cars and movies on the big screen outside. A favorite of the baby boomer generation, this once ultrapopular form of cinema under the stars is a classic in American past times. Visiting the drive-in was more about the experience rather than seeing the movie on a larger screen. Where smiling, cute confections sang their way to the concession stand! Dancing popcorn and kitschy soda headed to the snack bar that also offered treats like ice cream, pizza and pretzels. With romantic moments, fond memories and hanging out with friends, going to the drive-in was the cool thing to do. Some you grew up going to the drive-in every Friday night. Some of you, like in the movie Grease, may have even snuck into the movie by hiding in the trunk of your friend’s car. Originally called park-in theaters, their popularity was due to cheaper prices and fewer disruptions from people talking around you or today it would be the distraction of cell phones. Movie patrons did not just sit in their car, but they could bring along a cooler with some lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on and enjoy a movie on the large outdoor screen. Wikipedia states that there was a partial drive-in theater that predates the Camden, New York drive-in. The Theatre de Guadalupe opened in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in April of 1915, but shortly closed. Similarly, a drive-in theater in Comanche, Texas in 1921 showed silent films. However it is commonly recognized that the first drive-in movie theater opened on June 6, 1933. Drivers eagerly piled in their cars anticipating the hot new invention in entertainment. Located in Camden, New Jersey, it held the nearly 400 packed cars that flocked the outdoor theater. The screen was placed 12 feet off the ground. At 30 feet high and 40 feet wide, the screen was easily visible to everyone watching the movie. Wives Beware was the first film ever shown at a drive-in. To prevent dust and mosquitoes, the field was paved with gravel and oil. This however was not a successful bug repellent. According to a quote by Jim Kopp of the United Drive-in Theatre Owners Association in Smithsonian Magazine, the owner of the first drive-in theater, Richard Hollingshead's mother was too large for the old school, un-adjustable indoor seats of vintage movie theaters. So Richard stuck her in the car and put a 1928 projector on the hood of the car. He tied two sheets to trees in his yard to view the film. According to History.com, Richard, a movie fan and sales manager at Whiz Auto Products, tested how to guard against bad weather and devised just the right car arrangement so that

16

MARCH 2016

everyone could view the screen. He received the patent for his invention. Soon he was charging 25 cents per car and per person for an evening of entertainment for the entire family. In 1949 Hollingshead's patent was overturned and drive -ins began to pop up all over America. In 1958, there were 4,063 drive-ins in operation in the United States. Today, there are only a few hundred still in existence. Originally the sound for the showing was provided by wired RCA speakers that hung from the window of each car. The speakers were later replaced by the sound being broadcast via cars' AM or FM radio that picked up the sound while on theater property. Eighty years later, the ruins of drive-ins remain, but unfortunately a working drive-in is a rarity. As more indoor movie theaters opened around the United States and home rentals became increasingly popular, the popularity of the drive-in dissipated. The 21st century has given us modern viewing convenience from home thanks to Netflix and Redbox. Drive-ins offered the relaxing comfort of your car for viewing a movie. If you did not want to dress up, that was fine too. Even PJs are ok at the drive-in. It offered good fun for whole family; the kids could watch the first movie with their parents and then they could head to the backseat with their pillows to go to sleep while mom and dad stayed awake for a bit of alone time while they watched the next movie. There was a double feature with two movies for the price of one. One interesting fact that I came across on the Umich website was that the earliest backlash for the drive-ins was a "babysitter protest.” Picketing teenage girls marching around protesting, "Down with drove-ins, more work for babysitters." Particularly popular for teenagers seeking some privacy on their dates, early on drive-ins received the nickname of "passion pits" as the ideal place for teens to have un -chaperoned make out sessions. The image of young lovers watching a retro film in a convertible, tail-finned vintage vehicle is still an iconic picture of the drive-in. One of the largest drive -ins opened was the Johnny All-Weather Drive -In. Spanning 29 acres of Copiague, New York; the theater could hold 2,500 vehicles. It featured a full-service restaurant with roof top seating and a trolley system to take visitors to and from a playground and an air-conditioned indoor theater for extremely warm or bad weather. The drive-ins not only offered a movie and refreshments, but most had picnic tables and an additional playground area for

children. Some theaters went as far as to offer miniature trains, golf courses, pony rides, boat rides, talent shows and animal shows. Some theaters even had car hops making window-side deliveries to the hungry movie patrons. The drive-in heyday was in the late 50s. They particularly flourished in rural communities. During World War II, the drive-in production slowed due to the rationing of gas and tires. Even during difficult financial times, movies were still an enjoyable priority for Americans, possibly as a distraction during such a turbulent time, where moviegoers could have two hours to forget their worries. After a steady decline in the 70s and 80s due to the showing of less family friendly films or even showing XXX films in their off season as a final effort to keep from shutting down, the decline of the drive-in increased. Many of the drive-in theater remains have been made into flea market sites. However, there has been a recent resurgence in the classic American drive-in. Thanks to baby boomers' nostalgic soft spot for the movie hot spots they grew up with, they have been able to aid in the resurgence of the nearly-extinct theaters for their children and grandchildren. These living museums preserve the past and celebrate tradition by giving the next generation the opportunity for the unique experience that a drive-in theater offers. My grandma worked at a drive-in when my mom was a child. As a child of baby boomers, I grew up going to the drive-in as well. I loved going to the drive-in. There were only two locations by me, but it was often where my mom took my girlfriends and me when I had slumber parties. Movies did not start until after dark, so it was a late night, party type specialty. There is still some variety of drive-ins open in almost each US state. Old theaters have been renovated and reopened. If you are looking for a drive-in to visit near you, stop by www.driveinmovie.com for a complete list of drive-in theaters by state. The Drive-in theaters of the past give visitors a fun step back in time. Ideal for those of us with a desire for the good 'ol days and a timeless night of entertaining fun, the website even lists drive-ins in Canada and Australia. For those of you looking to experience the classic drive-in theater minus the unfavorable weather and sometimes subpar restrooms, check out Disney’s Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Located in Orlando, Florida as part of Walt Disney World, the retro inspired eatery features American food from the restaurant and snack bar, a lobby of sci-fi movie props and vintage car-shaped booths and tables. A nighttime sky filled with twinkling stars and an array of colorful, classic cars is the perfect place for dinner and a movie. The 50s themed restaurant is only available with paid theme park admission. In March of 2014, it was estimated that there are 348 drive-ins still in existence. Wikipedia stated that in the fall of 2014, the burger chain Johnny Rockets announced they would team up with USA Drive-Ins to open 200 drive-ins by 2018, serving Johnny Rocket's classic American cuisine at the concession stands. So you may get an old fashioned drive-in movie paired with a delicious burger and malt near you soon! Stay tuned!

The engine ticked as the desert heat radiated off her skin. Betty sat back in the driver’s seat, a lit cigarette smouldering between her fingers and her heels propped up on the dash. A bead of sweat trickled down the nape of her neck and rolled between her shoulder blades as the salt air stirred her hair and cooled her skin. She tugged down her skirt with her left hand, the cigarette in her right held at the limit of her reach to keep from setting her victory curls alight. Stripped down to her corset and skirt to save her last clean blouse from being sweat through during her tear through Death Valley, she shivered, underdressed for the cold air blowing off the Pacific. Denny’s probably still sleeping it off. A plume of smoke billowed from between her cherry red lips. Even Derrick’s wild ass shot wouldn’t have woken Denny, she thought. A sly smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. Derrick had been a vision, stripped down to his ratty boxer shorts, bare feet slapping the packed sand of the motel’s parking lot as he chased after her car, wildly waiving his revolver overhead. He had cowered and covered his head with his hands after he pulled the trigger as though the meat of his scrawny arms would be enough to save him – not that he was in any real danger. She had hit San Dimas just as the sun started its afternoon decent and drove straight on until Route 66 dead-ended at the Santa Monica Pier. After cruising Santa Monica Blvd, she settled on The Georgian Hotel as the sight of her next incarnation. Betty Martin, formerly Betty Jones, formerly Go-Go Betty, Queen of the Dothan Jaycees, Alabama dragstrip, was going to be a movie star.

18

MARCH 2016

She’d have the money to do it, too. Just as soon as she unloaded the crate of Tommy guns nestled in the trunk. She took a long drag, sucking the cigarette down to her scarlet fingernails then flicked the bright ember out through the open window. The crisp, white cotton of her blouse snapped as she shook it out before slipping it over her shoulders. A spritz of perfume behind each ear, a quick shake of her Victory curls, a fresh layer of bright red lipstick, and she was as ready as she would ever be to table-crash “Goodtime” Johnny Jakes, Dothan native and made man. Or that was the rumour around home. Denny and Derrick were Johnny’s second cousins on their mother’s side and reckoned they were as close as experts on Goodtime Johnny as anyone. They were quick to tell everything they thought they knew from stories of Goodtime Johnny’s lunches with studio bosses and dinner with the stars to his lucky escape from the feds outside Nawlins when Johnny was still running guns for Silver Dollar Sam. Of course, Denny and Derrick also said they were Elvis’s cousins on their Daddy’s side, so who knew if any of it was true. True or not, the guns in the truck belonged to Johnny. Denny and Derrick had filled each long mile between Dothan and Amboy with their big talk about the money Johnny was paying them to carry the guns from the New Orleans outfit out to LA. Money better put to use helping get established in the bar at The Georgian Hotel where she could be spotted and handed a plumb role, just like Lana Turner. Besides, it wasn’t going to do Denny and Derrick any good to let them drink their way to Mexico.

Better that they find their way back home rather than come out here where they can get themselves in real trouble. One last check of her lipstick in her handheld mirror, then she stepped out of the car with her head high. Eyes locked on the looped gold lettering of “Formosa Cafe” on a black glass door, her heels clicked hollowly on the cement floor as she marched toward where Goodtime Johnny waited.

against the restaurant’s stucco wall, hidden in the shadows of a cement post. Betty watched the boys with a wary eye as she shifted her clutch and eased open the clasp at the top. “This is a private club.” He looks her up and down. “But you might be able to find your way in.” “I’m sure I can, seein’ how the door is right there.” Junior took another step toward her and she stepped to the left to avoid him. “Hey, babe.” Betty spun toward the voice, her eyes wide, hands clasping her clutch in a stranglehold against her chest.

“Like I said, it’s private. You have to earn your way in. Maybe by giving my friend Vinnie here, your car. You like cars, don’t you, Vinnie?”

He was burly, rattily dressed in a pair of too big jeans, a hand-medown t-shirt, and a pair of plimsolls which belonged in the trash. A meaty paw reached up to push his over Brylcreem-ed hair out of his eyes, as he said, “Whadda you doin’ here alone, huh?”

“Love ‘em,” said the punk to her left who was propping up a concrete pillar with his left shoulder.

The New York noise which poured out of his mouth rubbed her nerves raw. “What’s it to you, Junior? Why don’t you scram before I box your ears and send you cryin’ back home to your mama?”

Frank took a step out of the shadows, his head dipped as though he were tipping his hat to her.

From behind the concrete support posts stepped two more young men, neither one dressed any better than their leader, theirs ages in the borderland between teenagers and men; old enough to know better, but young enough to think they could get away with anything. Junior flicked away his cigarette and stood from where he leaned

“And my friend Frank here, he likes purses, so he’ll be happy to take that.”

“Now, what could you give me?” Junior licked his lips as he leered at her. His eyes darted toward his friends, who had not moved. Confidence re-affirmed, he strode toward Betty, his hands out to grab her. She gripped her clutch in both hands and swung it like a baseball bat, striking Junior a solid blow to the right temple.

He clutched his head with both hands and staggered backward out of striking range. “Bitch! What did you hit me with?” She snatched her small pistol from her clutch and pointed it at Junior. “This.” Junior blinked his watering eyes several times before his eyes focused on black hole in the barrel of Betty’s gun. An ugly grin slid onto his face. “Now, you wouldn’t shoot me with that little thing, would you?” A rough laugh scraped its way out of his throat. Frank and Vinnie, who had taken a step back when Betty drew her gun, began to creep forward.

Where are the police? Back home, the Sheriff would already be here. Damn the Tommy guns in the trunk, she thought. It would be worth a year or two of my life to have another year or two of life. Vinnie lunged at her, his heavy boots dragging across the concrete. She swung the gun toward him. Frank’s laugh cut through the buzz in Betty’s ears as he lunged for her, his left hand stretched out to knock the pistol from her hands. She jerked the gun back, her elbows slamming into her chest.

“For that, I think we’ll take whatever we want.” Junior lurched toward her, staying low and moving fast.

Frank rushed her, driving her away from the post as he grasped her forearms, wrestling her for the gun.

She dropped her clutch to the ground, grasped the grip of her pistol in both hands, and squeezed the trigger.

Betty staggered, off balance in her heels. The step gave Frank the opening he needed to wrap his right arm around her waist, trapping her against him. “You can’t even handle one little girl?” Said Vinnie. “Hold still, hellcat. Would you help me?” Frank huffed out in her ear as he continued to struggle with her for control of the gun. She went for broke, smashed her right heel down on Frank’s instep. There was a satisfying crunch of bones and curse of pain from the thug. Pain caused Frank to loosen his grip on Betty. She stepped forward and punched her elbow into his diaphragm, knocking the air out of his lungs. Frank wrapped his arms around his chest as he fought for breath. Betty spun to face Frank and pressed the barrel of her pistol into his stomach as she kneed him in the groin. The staccato beat of Vinnie running across the concrete toward her had her spinning back around. There was a loud crack, and Vinnie fell to the concrete floor, screaming as though he had been set on fire. She lowered the gun and turned back to Frank, who threw out in front of him as though he could catch a bullet. With a roll of her eyes she said, “I’m not going to shoot you.” “I can’t let you go.” Frank’s breath came in gasps, but he lowered his hands and, with the help of the concrete post, began to straighten from the crouch he had fallen into. She did not wait for Frank to make it back to fighting fit, easily avoiding his half-hearted swats to bash him across the bridge of his nose with the barrel of her gun.

Junior dropped to the ground howling as blood poured from the bullet hole in his right calf. “The only thing I’m going to be giving any of you is a dose of lead.” Betty straightened her back and aimed her pistol at Vinnie and Frank. Two backward steps and her back was pressed against the concrete support post next to her car.

“Stop your caterwauling,” Betty shouted over Vinnie’s continued cries. “You got a little, bitty bullet in your foot. You’re not dying and you’re better off than either of your friends. That one,” she pointed her pistol at Junior, “is going to be on crutches for months. And that one is going to heal up even uglier than his mama remembers.” A slow clap echoed off the concrete walls of the parking garage. Betty’s cheeks flushed as turned to face the door to the Formosa Café, where two men stood, the razor sharp creases in their suit pants flapping in the Pacific breeze.

Vinnie tapped Junior on the chin with the toe of his boot, silencing Junior’s howls.

“I tol’ you they were stupid.” There was no threat in the tone man’s double-bass but the hand crammed into the bulging right pocket of his suit coat said he wasn’t taking any chances.

Betty could see Frank and Vinnie’s lips moving, but could hear nothing over the ringing of her own ears.

Goodtime Johnny Jakes looked better in colour than in the grainy black and white newsreel footage Betty saw at the Martin Theatre

certainly don’t have a problem with me or my friend Tony here. So, why don’t you put that heater on the ground so we can talk about what’s gonna happen next?”

“I would ask if you need any assistance, but it seems your doin’ just fine.” Johnny eyed the parking lot with disdain. “Might do you well in future to use the front door rather than parking in this dank ol’ place.” The gentility of his voice did not distract Betty from the flint in his eyes. “These boys aren’t gonna be a problem, and you

After a moment’s hesitation, she crouched, scooped her clutch off of the cement floor, and then stuffed the gun inside, never taking her eyes off Johnny and Tony. “I was just defendin’ myself.” “I’m sure you were.” He smiled; his too white teeth glinted in the dim light. “Where are you from sweetheart?” “Dothan, Alabama.” There was no point in lying, her southern accent clear in every word she said. Her eyes darted between the men she had left in scattered across the floor, “What are you going to tell the police?” Johnny opened his arms wide and turned in place as though he were Caesar addressing the masses. “What police?” Tony snickered, his snort cut short by irritation. Five long strides and then he struck out with his left foot, kicking Vinnie’s knees out from under him as he tried to stand. “The police won’t come unless I call and tell them to,” Johnny continued without so much as a glance toward where Tony loomed over Vinnie. “Or I tell Tony to tell them to.” “That’s more as like.” Tony bent at the waist and smacked Vinnie in the back of the head. “You’ve been put down. Now stay down, or I’ll put you down proper like.” Johnny held out his left hand toward Betty, “Why don’t you come tell me what I can do for a lady who’s so far from home?” He turned to pull open the door which had shut without Tony’s bulk to hold it open, then turned back toward Betty. “Say, you wouldn’t happen to know two fellas from Dothan who were travelling with a dame they might’a mentioned looked a lot like you?” She swallowed her nausea, smiled, and then stepped over Junior’s prone body, careful not to get his blood on her new, black and white wingtip heels. Her legs shook as she walked toward Johnny. She was so far in now she couldn’t see a way out. “I left them at Roy’s Motel in Amboy.” “That’s a good place for them. And my guns?” As Johnny again reached for the door, but Tony stepped up and held it open. Johnny leaned in and whispered something to Tony, who grunted his acknowledgement. “In the trunk. I…” Johnny waved her answer off. “They’re here. That’s all that matters. Now, do you like calamari?” “Is that the squids?” “Yeah. Not as good as gator, but it will get you through.” The door closed as they disappeared into the restaurant’s dark
