“God has already lined up the right people for you, people that will inspire you, challenge you, motivate you, and make you better. If you haven’t been to the Atomic Blast at Gulfport Dragway yet, make planes to be there this year. Your MC and host a true Cajun rat rodder builder from the Six Pak Pretty Rodzs “Crab” Landry will keep the activities moving along. Be sure to stop by and say hello to some of the people who will show up at this years event like Rooster MaGee, from the 2014 show Rebel Road on the Discovery channel, Jeramie Kitching Rosencranz from the Flamin' 8 Speed Shop.

While I was at the Emerald Coast Spring Cruizin’ I met Shevi DeLux when she stopped by Hot Rod Alley to check out Dennis Wilson’s Rat Rod. I talked her into letting me take a photo of her holding Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine. page 8 While getting her info she told me she knew the model “Jersey Curl” on the cover of the magazine she was holding. Fact is she was on her way to a photo shoot with Brian Barsama, Spare Parts Photography, in St. Augustine, FL. We will be looking forward to photos from that shoot in the May issue of MotorSports/

Meet Shevi De Lux I'm just a small town Texas gal who was pinup long before she knew it had a name! Like most pinup girls I love all things vintage and classic. I currently have a 1951 Chevrolet deluxe pickup in restoration that will some day be my daily driver. I love doing all kinds of events, promotions, photoshoots and charity events. I am always adding to my collection of tattoos and all things opossum related! I adore my fans and always look forward to checking my Facebook page and my mailbox! I can't wait to see who I meet this year! www.facebook.com/shevidelux Jimbo, Here is a lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organization. Very Impressive! We took some friends to a new restaurant, 'Steve's Place,' and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, 'Why the spoon?' 'Well,' he explained, 'the restaurant's owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.' As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. 'I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.' I was impressed. I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly. Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, 'Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?' "Oh, certainly!' Then he lowered his voice. 'Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom. By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%. I asked quietly, 'After you get it out, how do you put it back?' 'Well,' he whispered, 'I don't know about the others, but I use the spoon. giff1500@ Jimbo, My friend Tom finally decided to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend. One evening, after the honeymoon, he was welding some stuff in the garage just for fun. His new wife was standing there at the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally spoke, "Honey, I've just been thinking, now that we are married maybe it's time you quit spending all your time out here in the shop. You probably should just consider selling all your welders along with your gun collection and that stupid vintage Harley. Tom got a horrified look on his face. She said, "Darling, what's wrong?" He replied, "There for a minute you were starting to sound like my exwife." "Ex-wife!" she screamed, "YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!" Tom replied: “I wasn't." larryc@

By: Michael Lachaussee The March Lucedale Hardee's breakfast saw rainy weather that kept some cars away. Despite the weather, there were 18 cars and trucks present with a couple of first timers including a Dodge Prowler from Grand Bay. As you can see, the rain didn't dampen the discussions and tales going on at this table! This 1948 orange and silver Chevy Coupe is owned by Ronny Clark of Lucedale. Ronny is a retired (and as he says not expired) minister. He has always been interested in cars and enjoys buying and selling. Ronny has had this beauty for three years and reluctantly thinks he may have a buyer for it. This Coupe has a 355 Chevy Engine. Ronny also has a 1963 red two door Bel Air that could be bought if the price was right. Thanks Ronny for sharing your ride with the breakfast gang.

Jerry Breland is the proud owner of this 1965 Chevy Impala SS. He is from Wiggins and has owned this Chevy for 35 years. Once upon a time it was his daily driver but now keeps in for the sheer pleasure of owning a treasure from days gone by. This Chevy has a 283 engine and is loaded - factory air, power steering and brakes. It must be a fact that Jerry got his love of old cars from his Dad, Hanson, whose wagon was featured last month. We hope to see Jerry again at the breakfast. The Breakfast Gang would like to express condolences to Billy Cranford's family. He will be missed by the Gang. The Gang would also like to wish Amy Cross a speedy recovery from her recent accident/surgery. Get well soon Amy! The Hardee's Breakfast Gang meet every second Friday of the month at Hardee's in Lucedale beginning 8 until. Come join us.

March 3rd & 4th I had the chance to attend the “Goin’ To Town Car Show” in Brookhaven, MS. Over 200 cars, trucks and motorcycles registered and filled the streets in beautiful historic downtown Brookhaven. The Ole Brook Cruisers hosted the event. T-Tommy was the “DJ” spinning great tunes and called out winners of lot’s of door prizes. This show started in 1977 and by all accounts shows no signs of slowing down. Friday night at the host hotel the ole Brook Cruisers fed the earlybirds a great dinner of jambalaya and lots of homemade goodies. The Ole Brook Cruisers first car show was 39 years ago and had only 15 cars. The shows were held at motels and car dealerships until the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce started to help out a few years ago. The Chamber offered to bring the show downtown, and that is when the name “Goin’ To Town Car Show.” was created. T-Tommy Smith said “When I was a kid, the big deal was going to town,” he said. “My parents would say, ‘Let’s go to town,’ and I was ready to go.” This year cars came from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas. Participants, merchants and club members voted for their favorites and the club presented awards to the Top 25, Sweet 16, and a Fielder’s Pro Shop Sponsorship plague. ……… Good Show think I’ll put that on my list for next year. ……. jimbo

Emerald Coast Cruizin’ Spring Show was a great event for the Panama City Beach area. Spring break for us older kids. Hot rod cars & trucks, lots of pretty scenery like Shevi DeLux and plenty of live entertainment. “Rakes” and Lisa Parish along with the whole Flip Flop staff went all out to make sure everyone had a good time. This show turned out to be a live entertainment show with bands playing all day Friday and Saturday. For those of us that arrived early there was a great block party at Panama City Beach Harley -Davidson. On Thursday the event site opened and KOTO filled the park with classic sounds till noon then the Georgia Clay Band took over on the main stage. Butch Patrick “Eddie Munster” showed up with two of his show vehicles. (yes he drives them) Drove the big one in the parade Thursday night. Friday cars once again parked around the main stage as the bands Georgia Clay, Rhonda Vincent the Queen of Bluegrass, Caribbean Chiller a tribute band to ‘Jimmy Buffett’, Forever a tribute band to ‘Styx’ and Chain Reaction a tribute band to ‘Journey’ entertained the crowd. Thursday thru Saturday the park was filled with cars, trucks, vendors, music, great food vendors and on Saturday there was a Collector Car Auction. This was the first Big Kids Springbreak event for Flip Flop Promotions and it was no flop I’ll tell you that….!! As far as the room rates go, if you shop around a little you will find a price you can afford and the money will be well spent. I think this show will grow into the huge November Emerald Coast Cruisin’ you’ve attended or read about. The few pictures and words I’ve posted only express just a few thoughts I have about this show. If you want to see more pictures and see what other people who were there had to say go to: Facebook and type in emeraldcoastcruizin when it comes up go to Latest.. This is where you will find great coverage of this show from the Emerald Coast Cruizin’ fans….

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage April 2017 I find the month of April to be a wonderful time of the year ahead. It is almost time to transition to the Hot season after the Not So Hot season. I don't really like to call it spring, because we really don't have a spring time here in the good old south. The car show/ cruise night activities are now in full swing. Old cars and trucks and most motorcycle folks are by now out and about in force. Lots of Fun with Cars to be had. Daylight savings time is also in effect one again. To me this means I can drive to cruise nights and stay a little longer than I do now due to my eyesight not being so great at night. Its not that I cant see I just see too much when it comes to on coming headlights they appear to be star bursts to me. I find it kind of blinding and very uncomforting while driving. So I try to avoid this as much as I can. I'm quite sure others with as many birthdays as myself have similar problems. Not complaining here just stating a fact from my perspective. For those that have been following this monthly rambling, the Queen is officially retired as of April 1st If by chance you see us out and about, please wish her well, and offer her some condolences for having to put up with me now for extended periods daily. I am quite sure there will be some adjustments to my lifestyle forthcoming, and real fast too. I have been retired now for nearly nine years, and being retired from a structured aerospace job, I have set my own schedule for daily activities, we are creatures of habit, and old habits are tough to change. This could be a great opportunity to get some of Chases Big Truck project work done at hopefully a faster pace. Since I just may be able to share some of my duties with the Queen. I am so looking forward to the day that we may be able to buzz the neighborhood with it. There is progress made on this not every day but at times things do get done, just not as fast as I would like. I do look forward to doing some traveling and seeing some of the sights of the country. Hopefully we can do most of this during the sweltering Hot season, mainly because I don't enjoy driving through winter ice and snowstorms. Also she and I both enjoy taking the back or side roads instead of interstates, it just seems to be a more peaceful and scenic drive. plus there is more opportunity to stop and look at little shops and towns along the way. So what if it takes longer to get where we are going, we are now both on permanent vacation. Now if I could just convince her to take off on some of these travels in the Roadster it would be even more fun for me, but I'm not so sure she would be willing, so will have to start on a smaller and shorter scale. Happy Retirement to the Queen and Happy and Blessed Easter to you all. Later, Gizmo
" THE GREAT MUSTARD FRAUD" You know how it is when you are young, raising kids, living from paycheck to paycheck, stretching every penny to it's utmost. Well this is the story of my son. When I married his Mom, I inherited the sprite, a spirited young boy of eight years old. Now over the years I have tried to instill in this young man all of the right attributes, do what is right, be honest, be truthful, be faithful, you know all the right things to being a good man someday. Well once I got him over "FOOLS HILL", he has turned out to be a hard worker, great Father, and Husband, so maybe I didn't do such a bad job afterall. There is however one thing that he just insisted on coming up as a child at home. HE WOULD NOT EVER EAT ANYTHING BUT "FRENCH"S MUSTARD! Now I started this by saying we lived paycheck to paycheck as many of you have experienced the same lifestyle, I know. Throughout his entire juvenile life and even his teenage years there was a French's mustard bottle in the refrigerator. Even after he left home there was a French's mustard bottle in the refrigerator. Now did I say it contained French's mustard? Once in it's life it did indeed contain French's mustard, when it was bought "NEW"! You see to save a little money each time it was refilled with some "OFF" brand or substandard "STORE" brand of mustard. He was never the wiser and he ate the mustard without the first complaint to either me or his Mother for all those years. Now he was a grown man, left home, got out on his own, making his own way in life, buying his own "MUSTARD" if you will. Well there was an event going on at our house one weekend. Grilled Hot dogs were the main dish. He and his younger sister were sitting around the table discussing the things they enjoyed eating and the subject of MUSTARD came up, and he still would not eat anything but French's mustard. This is where his younger sister, you could see it on her face, as she looked at my wife, was beeming and as excited as if she had just been crowned "Miss America", could not hold in the family secret any longer and revealed to him that he had not been eating "French's" mustard for his entire life at home. THE BOY WENT "NUTS"! You mean to tell me that I have been eating some minor league substitute for mustard all my life! The reply through all the laughter, from his younger sister was, "YEP"! But there is still a French's bottle in the refrigerator even today! "YEP"! She then revealed that Mom had reused the bottle over and over and once the label had gotten to a stage of "I can't read it any more", then and only then was a new bottle containing French's bought. The boy is still to this day in therapy, and has now named this "THE GREAT MUSTARD FRAUD"! p.s.: He has never admitted to any of the above, he is and always will be convinced that if it came out of a French's bottle it must be French's mustard. This past month has been an adventure as always for Jeramie and his team. After speaking with Jeramie several times while on his travels hunting down parts for his SEMA 2017 Rat Rod build. Along with a few phone calls and advise, from my Rat Rod family members. I walk away with this quote in the back of my mind … "You can steal my ideas, but no one can steal my passion!" This quote reminds me of the passion it takes to build a great Rat Rod. It’s the same passion and drive we all have when someone tells us, Stefanie Lea "you can not do something". When you have a passion for something, you will always find a way. You'll just do it bigger, louder, and faster. I learned this past month... that some people are just not like minded in the same way as our Rat Rod family is. Simply because they don't understand it. So I’d like to say, Thank you Sir! Its people like you that's keeps the people in our Rat Rod family, building bigger, louder, faster and meaner looking Rat Rods. Simply because someone once told them they couldn't. Its also the same reason and passion I have to keep moving forward on this journey I call...THE ROAD TO SEMA 2017!
https://www.facebook.com/flamin8speedshop/
So as the team hit the roads this month. Jeramie and his team put together a brochure explaining all about the build off with information on them heading to SEMA. He tells me he is proud to show off the work Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine and I are doing each month. As we showcase the build step by step, along with the great opportunities that can come with sponsoring them on The Road to SEMA 2017. The Flamin’ 8 team drove through the night to arrive at The Race & Performance Expo in Schaumburg, IL. Pulling in at 4:30am, they knew that this day was going to be a great chance to show off all the team had in store for the Rat Rod build going to SEMA in the fall. After catching a quick nap. They set off to find just the right sponsors to help them reach their goals. They were looking for someone that has the same drive and passion as Jeramie and his team have! After meeting several vendors and telling them all about The Road to SEMA 2017. Two companies stood out and showed Jeramie and his team what they are passionate about. Craig Schenasi from Procar seats (product of Scat) was very interesting. Craig, Jeramie, and his team comfortably sat down in Procar seats that were conveniently on display and talked. Before they knew it everyone was shaking hands and teaming up with Procar. Exciting news for my friends and worth the trip down south already! Shortly after meeting Craig, Jeramie and The Flamin '8 Speed Shop team also had the pleasure of meeting Mike Bennett and his family. Mike Bennett is the owner of Dynamic Drivelines located in Des Moines Iowa. Dynamic Drivelines specializes in drive shafts made of steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber. Fitting just about any application. They seemed to be a great fit for Jeramie and his team also. Not only is Dynamic Drivelines a sponsor of some of The Street Outlaw cars. (Street racing TV show on the Discovery Channel.) They now sponsor Jeramie and Flamin '8 Speed Shop on The Road to SEMA 2017 also. What a great addition these two will be for Jeramie and his team. Dynamic Drivelines and Procar Seats will not be let down by this crew, I promise you! Mean while back at the shop the 1955 Chevy COE hauler build is still underway. Now that the cab has been mocked up it was time to strip the donor truck for its motor and Chassis. In no time there were truck parts everywhere and the chassis was rolling out the door to pull the cab off. Then back in the shop to set the COE cab on. Another huge step in the is build off for this team. After pulling some parts from the engine they were lifting the cab over to its new chassis. Of coarse this is not a direct fit, nothing new to any rat rod builder.
12
APRIL 2017
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
So one of the team members Josh Miller climbed into the cab with the plasma cutter and did a little trimming of the floor and fire wall. They lowered the cab down some then trimmed some more. True rat rod fashion, everything has to be lowered!! At this point you can’t stop until you have a perfect fit. Now the team has the front cab section set in place. It was time to set the front clip on to make sure the wheel was placed right in the wheel opening. It was perfect! Now its time to sit back and relax for a few minute as Jeramie and the guys wait the arrival of some friends. Jeramie and his team will enjoy the company of other Rat Rod builders from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and even Canada. As they all come together for a weekend of hard work, cold beers and great memories. Working together to help get the 1959 Cadillac ready to join the cab over as it to will all be heading to SEMA this fall. They soon started taking the Cadillac apart panel by panel. Cutting into the night working towards Jeramie's vision for the Rat Rod build off. After hours of team work and a few beers. There was nothing but a pile of rusty pieces from the frame left on the shop floor. Along with a rear end on the trailer to pull out of the shop the next day. Now as any Rat Rod builder knows, this is when it gets exciting and fun. When you can take all the pieces and fit them together to see the start of your vision come to life. You can sense the pride in Jeramie's voice as he talks about it. As each guest helps in the planning of the next step towards this build off. Only to make the perfect cuts needed to get the right look they are going for with this part of the build. These guys went as far as putting a seat on the floor of the shop inside the mocked up Caddy. Just to see what it was going to feel like from the inside this future Rat Rod. Something I'm sure every builder has done them as well. These guys have been busy getting there builds off the ground and ready to head to Vegas this year. When Jeramie speaks of his team he talks as each of them are apart of his family. Telling me each of them are talented in their own way making for a great team. Speaking about how proud and lucky he is to have so many people come together towards one common goal. And as they keeping pushing to get everything ready for The Road to SEMA 2017. You can just tell each have the same passion as the other. So as they all stand beside him in Vegas talking about this very weekend. It will be a treasured moment in time for them all. Now with all that being said.... I am very excited to have Jeramie Rosencranz & Josh Ellseworth from Flamin' 8 Speed Shop, all the way from Wisconsin. Drive one of my favorite Rat Rod trucks built by the Flamin '8 Speed Shop and join me at the Atomic Blast in Gulfport Mississippi on April 21 & 22! I can not wait to see what the red gasser rat rod truck can really do when the rubber meets the asphalt in Mississippi. As I get to ride shot gun along on one of the many burn outs we will get to see on this weekend! Come by and wish them good luck on The Road to SEMA 2017! XoXo

It was a cold rainy night. As we pulled up to this little house in this residential neighborhood in Bessemer, Alabama. You could tell we were at the right place, vehicles are lined up around the block. A gentlemen came towards us on a four wheeler with a flash light. He guided us into what looks like the neighbor's back yard for extra parking. Soon we were making our way toward Henry "Gip" Gibson driveway.. better known as Gip's Place. We make our way down the driveway towards a old camper set up as the entrance to this historic place. We are greeted by "Babe", she politely takes our money and slaps a wrist band on our arm. Then tells us in her very southern raspy voice "y'all have a good time now!" The smell of Bar B Q hits us in the face as we walk along the wood burning barrels outside of the mysterious playground toward this make shift juke joint. As we get closer I can hear the sounds pouring out from the screen doors as the coward is as loud as the band is at times. Elbow to elbow we pile into this tiny little piece of history and find ourselves sitting right next the man himself Gip's. He is sitting in his reserved spot enjoying the sounds coming from the tiny leaking little stage. Made from old pallets, tin and what looks like plastic for walls. The place is lined with a variety of tables and chairs. It’s nothing short of what you would expect from a 60 year old juke joint. This may be the only remaining authentic juke joint in Alabama. And one of the few remaining in the country, its the real deal they tell me! Each of us brought a cooler with us... Gip’s is a B.Y.O.B place. Nothing is sold at Gip's not even water. So you bring the drink of choice, yet we find out later others are willing to share what they as well. Moonshine, whisky or just a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon. Its like we are all family here. And if you like the smells pouring out of the Bar B Q pit... well its a donations if you will. Reverend Tex and the Hot Rod Revival is on stage and blasting out some southern rock mixed with a little blues. The dance floor is full of people. Within in minutes of speaking to Gip, I see him moving towards the dance floor as well. I just can’t help but take in all this place has to offer. I found myself right in the middle of the coward dancing and enjoying myself . Next the Martini Shakers take stage for a few songs. Bring us all the sounds from the past while filling the room with a vibrations from the stand up bass. This place has turned into just what Gip's envisioned it would become when he opened up his home to the public in 1952. That's right Gip's just turned 97 years old this year. And over 450 people attended his birthday party, just to see this legend get on that tiny make-shift stage and play the blues for them as he has done for so many years. And he still gets up and plays the blues every Saturday night for the adoring coward during intermission when the visiting band takes a break. I also found out, after speaking with Babe when she invited me into the tiny camper to get out of the rain, “Gipson” as she calls him, "is the opening act every Saturday night. He starts off with playing Amazing Grace on the harmonica.” He is also the closing act as everyone walks up the driveway leaving Gips Place with a reminder of what the blues are really all about. As we leave Gip’s I look back at the diverse crowd gathered here tonight. I know what once must of been a dream no-one saw a future in. The world around Gip was only seen as black and white. Yet seeing how so many things have changed at this little house on the corner in Bessemer Alabama. Knowing one thing has never changed and that love Gip's has for the blues. We take with us a little piece of history that we all will cherish. I'm proud to of had the honor to meet the man that took the chance to bring all of us together. Over the blues playing in the back ground on that stage of history, Gip told me the one thing I will always remember.... "No Black.. No White.. Just the Blues!"………. Gip XoXo NOTE: This was on the t shirt I picked up on my way out that evening! "Blues is a thang that waves away death .... if only for a little while."……... Gip

This 1946 Chevy trucks history is very interesting even though the story of the first part of its life has been lost in time. From what we can tell from old markings on the truck it was once a work truck for what we believe was a paint supply business. Where it gets interesting is in the 1960's this truck was equipped with a 327 cubic inch V8, Muncie 4 speed, and a rear end out of a 1958 Oldsmobile. From there on, it lived its glory days racing at Razorback Dragway. That was until the track closed in the 1970's. For most vehicles this is where the story ends because to was then parked and left to fade away sitting in the yard. Decades went by and mother nature was slowly making attempts to reclaim her. As time went on the owner also aged and passed on. This is when things started to change....slowly. There was an estate sale and this truck was sold to a USA Army veteran with a hot rod obsession. He got it home and started tearing into this relic. Body off the frame, Painted the frame, all new king pins, bushings, brake & fuel lines, new floor, new engine cross member, wiring ect..... Then what happens to so many projects happened. The distraction of another project pushed this old truck back outside and into the yard where it would sit until it's true savior came along. This is when Jeramie Kitching Rosencranz became the new owner. Jeramie had recently lost his home, shop, three hot rods, and business to a fire. After loosing everything he needed a distraction and needed a hot rod. They were meant for each other. Now it was time to build a full blown Flamin' 8 Speed Shop truck
to replace the one that went up in smoke. The body came back off and everything mechanically was gone through or replaced. The modifications were under way. 383 Stoker motor with all the goodies, 4L80e trans with TCI controller & stall, posi disk brake rear -end with sway bar, disk brake straight axle in the front, aluminum radiator, ect.... Being that Jeramie has such a love for rat rods he left the perfect patina that mother nature made. But it needed that race truck look to go with his style and build. Jeramie headed right over to see Dan Keys at Rat Rod Ranch to get his handy artist paint work. Dan has an amazing skill of lettering rats and making the new paint look distressed. The Flamin' 8 Speed Shop logo was painted on the doors, a few sponsors in the right places to give it that race vibe and Razorback Dragway painted below the back window with Mr. Horsepower to honor the trucks past. Normally after all this work you would only see a vehicle like this used locally or at the local drag strip but not this one. Jeramie uses this truck every day (except during Wisconsin winters). Not only does it get used for work doing parts deliveries and pulling trailers, it has towed a 1951 Chevy all the way to Wisconsin from Oklahoma. This truck has driven to Las Vegas multiple times and will be driven from Menomonie Wisconsin to Austin Texas to Las Vegas and then proudly to Atomic Blast in Gulfport Mississippi before driving back home. People this is what Rat Rods and Hot Rods are all about. Being driven!!! Make sure you make it out to Atomic blast to meet Jeramie Kitching Rosencranz and check out his Flamin' 8 Speed Shop truck.

I don’t know about you, but I love music. There isn’t a day that goes by without my listening to music at least for a short while. When I’m at work, I always have music playing in the background. When I am getting ready in the morning, taking a shower, working in the garden, relaxing, whatever - music is playing. But when I am in the car, no matter how short the trip, I must have the radio on. Music is a necessary accompaniment to every trip. Cars and radios just seem to go together. Think about it. The radio sets the mood for you. In a hurry? Driving songs and songs with a quick beat. Kids in the car? Disney music. Cruising with your best girl (or guy)? Love songs. Had a fight with your significant other and need a good cry? Heartbreak tunes. Feeling nostalgic? Golden oldies! Back when I was a kid in the 1960s, almost everyone I knew had an AM radio in their car. I remember being on back roads and highways of Louisiana and Mississippi late at night with my daddy driving. The only stations that radio would pick up played country music, a ball game or a preacher. That was pretty much it. I had little pocket-sized AM radios and I listened to only two stations in the New Orleans area: WTIX and WNOE. Ironically, WTIX is still playing that very same music today on both AM and FM. It was awesome when AM/FM radios became standard issue because in your car you could receive the signal from your favorite station farther out of town than the AM station and it sounded better. We also had more stations playing the music we loved. For a while, we still listened to our favorite AM DJs, but FM finally won out altogether. I remember when 8-track players came out and were in our dashboards. You could pick your own music! They were okay until cassette players became the thing.
I can’t tell you how many cassettes saw thrown out of car windows because the tape got caught up and destroyed! Cassettes made it easier to listen to your favorite music because you could make your own cassettes. I know I’m not the only person who called the DJ, requested a song and sat there with my finger on the “Record” button waiting for my song to play so I could get it onto a tape. That rarely worked well, but we did our best.
Think back to when you were dating and you found that perfect place to park. You know you had the radio on. I remember nights at Lake Pontchartrain or Brechtel Park with the music turned down low. I also remember days in those same spots with the music cranked up loud for the world to hear. I am one of those people for whom music brings thoughts and memories of people, places and events. If I hear a song from my high school years, I can name the guy I was dating when that song came out. I can often remember somewhere I was hearing the song played, like a party, or a picnic or on a camping trip. For example, Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven was a very long, slow, song which was played at every dance and prom I went to in the 1970s. If I hear it today, it immediately takes me back there. I am sure there is at least one song that does the same for you. Maybe it was the song playing when you first kissed your loved one in the back seat of a now classic car. Radio music is an integral part of our lives. In 2012, the Beach Boys recorded a song called “That’s Why God Made the Radio”. The lyrics say “So tune right in everywhere you go; He waved His hand, gave us rock ‘n roll, the soundtrack of falling in love, That’s why God made the radio.” So, now to the point of this story. The Turtle, our ’52 Chevy’ had a radio when we found her. Goodness knows when was the last time it picked up a station. I simply had to find her another one. After months of searching, I found a fully restored 1952 Chevy AM radio with speaker. It was crazy expensive but it came with a warranty and it is even the same color green as The Turtle. I had it shipped to my husband, Charlie, for Valentine’s Day. Now to get it into the dash and find the perfect antenna to go along with it. Charlie and Herb, my brother, should get the radio installed before we head to the Coast at the end of the month for the first Cruise Night of the year. With a back seat like The Turtle has, a radio is essential! I am looking forward to Charlie and me to take her out to the point across from the New Canal Lighthouse on Lake Pontchartrain and remember way back when while making some new memories together. If you see us out and about some time, you should stop on by and ask to hear a song or two. We can share a few songs, a few memories and a few smiles.

The Year is 1961 I remember standing in our front yard watching the search lights move across the sky. They appeared to be beams that went to the Moon to search for life. They were searching for life, but not in Space. They were calling us to Blank Chevrolet where the 1961 Chevrolets had just arrived. I ran into the house and asked my parents if I could go to see them. The first thing out of my father’s mouth was, “Do you have your homework done?” “Yes, I do” was my answer.” “OK, you can go for an hour or so, but no longer.” I was out of that house like a bullet! I ran down the street to Bill Anderson’s house, knocked on the door, and asked if he could go see the new cars. The answer was yes, and down the street we ran heading toward the dealership. There it was! A shiny new red Impala bubbletop was sitting right out front under the pennant flags and lights. This is what the searchlights had been calling me to witness. It was stunning! It had full wheel covers, white wall tires, red upholstery, and right there on the floor was a stick shift. Yup, this was a three pedal, four speed car. Bill nudged me with his elbow. He looked me straight in the eye as he said with bubbling excitement, “It’s a four yanker!” Oh, we would have done most anything to have our parents buy that car! Even though I was not old enough to drive yet, I would have been so proud to ride in that car, windows rolled down on that hardtop and my arm out the window, as my old man laid rubber down the street. Would that have been cool or what? I would have been a big man on campus! Bill and I hung around for a while eating free hot dogs and popcorn. We took a free yardstick for our parents. The salesmen would not let us drive the cars. If my parents would have come they could have driven one home to test drive, but I doubt I could have talked them into the red Impala with the four speed tranny. Now, a teenager in the 1960’s needs to plan ahead and that is what Bill Anderson and I did. We decided it was highly unlikely that our parents would be buying a new car, much less a cool one. If we were going to be able to wow the girls with a cool ride by the time we were old enough to drive, we would need to build it. It would be tough to share a car, but there is no way our parents would buy us one, much less two. We had $300.00 between the two of us, and we needed to buy a car. Not just any car. A cool ride! A custom car was what we had in mind, maybe a ’55 Chevy hardtop with a 283 Power Pac, four speed, chopped top, shaved door handles, nosed and decked, radiused rear wheel wells, ’56 Buick tail lamp lenses, and chrome reverse wheels. Nothing fancy, and if it didn’t have all of that for $300.00 we could work with what was there and customize it as we went. Well, we got a lesson in economics, that is for sure. We could not even buy a wrecked 1955 Chevy, much less a customized one! I doubt we could have even bought the frame for that amount of money. We were embarrassed and quickly moved on to look for a $300.00 hot rod. We found one. We really did. It wasn’t customized yet. If it was going to have a chopped top, we were going to be doing that work ourselves. The car we found was a 1950 Ford 2 door
18

sedan. It didn’t have tires or wheels. That was OK with us because we were going to put custom wheels on it anyway. Maybe Cragars or Rocket Wheels. Those would look neat! The upholstery was in terrible shape, but that was alright because it would need tuck and roll to entice the girls. Some of the trim pieces were missing, but we were going to take all that off too. All we had to do was fill in the holes and it would look hot. (We should have taken auto shop before we started this project.) The bumpers were terrible, so we just would do without. All in all, we figured some hard work and a few extra hours at our part time jobs and we would have all the money we needed. As it turned out, we barely had the money for the flat black paint (in rattle cans), plain wheels and tires. We talked my grandmother into covering the seats for us. We did get it nosed and decked. Shaving the door handles and locks posed a problem we did not have the money to overcome. The side window had to be left down to gain access to the inside door handle to open the door. We couldn’t lock it, but no one ever stole this custom classic. Same problem with the trunk, but we did solve that with a cable to the latch that we hid under the floor. Our skill level was not sufficient enough to French the lights or antennas. Those were in the original plans. No souped up V-8, just the stock flathead that was in it. No four speed or even a floor shift, it was “ three on the tree”. No dummy spots, lakes pipes, custom wheels, or chopped top. It was not the vision we had for this car originally, but it did run and could take us to the drive in movies, sock hops, cruising the BK Root Beer stand, and to state parks. There was a lot of double dating done in this car. Bill and I learned a lot of lessons from building this car. The main one was that two teenagers sharing one car have a lot of disagreements. It gave us a foundation that we could use to build subsequent hot rods. We learned about money and we learned patience. It was not really such a bad idea as I look back upon it. Uncle Ezra says that patience is the ability to count down before you blast off! Were the cars we built safe? No, not all the time. Did we do foolish things? Yes we did, but most of us suffered no ill effects. My children and grandchildren have access to my hotrod and I am thankful for that. They can see and relive my childhood through that car. We need to encourage youngsters that we encounter at car shows. They need the opportunity to hear our stories. We need to help them understand the history and importance of this hobby. I am glad I grew up in a time when I knew which rest room to go into. Gotta Cruise!

By Candy Cocktail For many of us, when we think of the 1950s, the iconic image that comes to mind is one of a sock hop. Youngsters dressed in letterman jackets, poodle skirts and saddle shoes, twisting the night away in a gymnasium to a classic rock n' roll song. For the baby boomers, the sock hop is not just a fun theme for a party, but it was an actual part of your early memories from growing up. TVs, microwaves, rock n' roll and skyrocketing automobile sales were changing life for Americans. Perhaps nothing is a representation of that era more. So how did the sock hop get its name? The hops got their name because the twisting and dancing teens had to remove their hard-soled shoes so they would not scuff up the wooden floors of the school gyms that hosted the mixers. They would literally be-bop in their socks. The how stuff works website stated that during this time, teenagers started being viewed as a group and advertisers were learning that gearing things like TV shows and magazines toward this youth group could be lucrative. Psychologists began recognizing adolescence as a concrete life stage different from children and adults. Parents and older adults seemed to be baffled at the behavior of teens and some thought the hops were inappropriate. According to Wikipedia, sock hops were held as early as 1944 by the American Junior Red Cross to raise funds during World War II. It was not until 1948 that it became a fad among American teenagers. In later decades, shoes could be kept on because of the widespread popularity of sneakers and other types of indoor shoes. During this time, new fashions were sweeping in popularity around the nation. The best remembered attire, the poodle skirt, was first designed by Juli Lynne Charlot in 1947. Radio DJ Alan Freed is frequently credited with first using the term "rock-and-roll" to describe the musical genre that sprang to life in the '50s and '60s. Occasionally there were live bands at the hops, but more often there was a disc jockey playing vinyl records. The popularity of sock hops led to the creation of the phrase bobby soxer; which described the fans of pop music. Music was a major characteristic of the beloved sock hop. The popular rock and doo-wop songs of the sock hop were Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets, Rockin Robin by Bobby Day and Hound Dog by Elvis Presley. Danny and the Juniors sang "At the Hop" in 1957, which named many popular dances and documented what happened at a hop. Dancing was of course the thing to do at the hop. The older generations sure knew how to dance. The popular dances of the 50s sock hops were the twist, the lindy hop, the jive, the swing, boogiewoogie, the hand-jive, the cha cha and the jitterbug. The word bop usually referred to a number of low swiveling Charleston-like steps danced in place, sometimes without
a partner. During this new dance era, it did not matter if you had a male or female partner because everyone just wanted to dance. The Original Stroll, the iconic sock hop dance featured in countless shows and movies, is where two lines of dancers are across from each other with a large space in the middle. Lead dancers or boys are on one side, their partners or girls on the other side. Dancers do a step pattern to advance to front of the line, and when the leaders get to the front, they do a solo routine though the line with their partner as everyone watches. Television also helped increase the prevalence of sock hops and rock and roll. At the start of 1950, only a little more than 5 million TVs were purchased in the United States. However, by the end of the decade, more than 50 million sets would fill close to 9 out of every 10 American homes. Televisions in homes helped a variety of trends spread like never before. The creation of the TV show American Bandstand, the wildly popular favorite of TV viewers in the 1950s, '60s and beyond, brought new music genres and fresh dances like the twist into the homes of millions of Americans during the many decades during which it aired. The show went nationwide in August of 1957, and within 6 months, it was broadcast on more than 100 stations with 20 million people regularly tuning in. Dick Clark, the show's host, even put in live appearances at additional sock hops, sometimes attending more than two dozen a week. The TV show that changed pop culture would get an estimated 20-40,000 fan letters per week. Jeepers! Thee dance event for teenagers in mid-20th-century North America eventually came to be known as simply a school dance. I do not know about you, but I prefer the kitschiness of the original title. For old and young alike, our love of nostalgic sock hops has never wavered. Planning a sock hop party of your own? Check out Pinterest for countless cute ideas on everything for planning a sock hop; from food to music to costumes.

I left Friday about noontime on March 17th for my trip to New Roads, LA for the 8th Annual New Roads Street Festival Car Show with the Pointe Coupee Cruisers. You need to time your trip so you don't hit Baton Rouge traffic at rush hour. On Fridays, I think its rush hour all day because traffic is a mess. I'd rather hit rush hour in Mobile or NOLA than Baton Rouge traffic. Got through it and pulled into New Roads about 4 pm. Mr. Paul stopped traffic and helped me get the trailer into position and then checked into Morel's Inn in downtown New Roads. It is an older motel, but very proper, clean and nice. High beds just like the days of old, where you also just about need a step stool to get in bed. There were already a bunch of cruisers out front, I got my room set up and when back to mix and mingle. We ended up all going to dinner right behind the motel at what else but Morel's Seafood. Downtown New Roads is right on the False River and Morel's Seafood actually sticks out over the water. I had fried shrimp and fried oysters, so good. I got to bed early because I had a 5 am alarm to start on the setup for the show. I had no problem going to sleep, then at 11pm, bam, bam, bam on my door. Got up to find one of the cruisers from out front with a cop telling me I had to move my truck off the street or it was going to be towed. They had to beat on every door to find me. A young cop was just doing what he was told to do. Even though I was going to drive down the two blocks to the Hot Rod Show trailer about 6 am, I didn't argue or try to explain, I just moved my truck around to the water side and went back to bed. Saturday morning I was up and moving at 5 AM and drove down to the trailer. Already cruisers were jockeying for the best parking spots. New Roads has a classic café downtown, I had breakfast and then got the setup for show complete. The weather was great and the cruisers poured in and the crowds also came to see the cars. New Roads is a classic small town with a beautiful backdrop of the False River. The False River looks like the Mississippi River and it was at one time. Now it is considered an oxbow lake, because it has a beginning and an end. To make the Mississippi River straighter for navigation, this part of the river was eliminated from the main body of the Mississippi which means no title flooding from upstream. So residents and guest get to enjoy a 10-mile river looking body of water with a beginning and an end with houses and camps all the way around it. The fishing is good also because
20
APRIL 2017
it is a trophy lake, which fish have to be a certain size to be kept. The car show was awesome, 301 registered cars took over the downtown area, everywhere you could park a car and the traffic was rerouted around the area. The whole town turns out for the festival and car show. Auto Zone provided plenty of door prizes for us. The Mega 50/50 was $3,400, plus the city put up a second drawing of $500 on the Mega 50/50 tickets. About mid show the mayor, Robert Myer came over and told me “Jeepers Creepers 3” was being filmed in New Roads and he had one of the actors coming over to do an interview with me. His name was Stan Shaw, but his name didn't ring a bell with me until he walked in to the Hot Rod Show trailer. When I saw him my jaw dropped. Holly cow, I've seen this dude in movies many times. Rocky, Snake Eyes, Fried Green Tomatoes, Cutthroat Island, The Great Santini, Roots The New Generation, Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, The Boys in Company C, The Gladiator, Tough Enough, Runaway, the list goes on and on. I found Stan to be a good interview and a hoot to hang with after the interview, just a normal down to earth guy who fit in well in New Roads. He said Jeepers Creepers 3 still had a couple more weeks of filming left to shoot and they were having a blast in New Roads. A great place to spend some time for any reason. I normally stay over Saturday night, but as soon as the show was complete, I got everything packed up and hit the road for home, I had a reason. I only had two days left to get everything ready at home for me going down. By the time you are reading this column, hopefully I'll be well on the way to recovery! I had reconstruction on my nose at Oshner Hospital in New Orleans on Tuesday March 21. Breathing problems prompted me to finally undergo getting my nose fixed from an active childhood. I had my nose broken so many times growing up I lost count. Baseball, motorcycle racing before the full face helmets, football, boxing, an occasional fight, well my nose was a mess. But heck I didn't have to look at it, lol. The breathing issues finally made me get it fixed. I understand the first 6 days, while the packing is in will be miserable, but I've got it to do. So if your jaw drops the next time you see me I'll understand, just getting my nose back to normal. Plan on joining us the last weekend of April, Friday and Saturday the 28 & 29 in Orange Beach at the Wharf for Bama Coast Cruise powered by O'Reilly Auto Parts and the following weekend the first weekend of May 5 & 6 at Burning Up The Beaches powered by O'Reilly in Destin at the Destin Commons. The Hot Rod better be ready, it's time to cruise and enjoy that 17 FOREVER state of mind! til next month…

The first local car show of February was at the VFW in Bay St. Louis. Cindy and the ladies put on a fun show! It was a beautiful day for all the 65 cars that came out to the show. There was a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing. The VFW Auxiliary supports the Biloxi VA hospital by sending money monthly. They also support veterans suffering the effects of PTSD by holding a picnic at the Bay St. Louis Post. They also send packages to troops at Christmas and the Homeless Veterans National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Mississippi now has a similar home, which has been operating for 4 years. The National Home is not supported by the federal government - only by the VFW. So the money raised with this show is stretched many ways, but always supports the veterans. This is a show that makes a real difference in the lives of veterans! I'm excited to note that two new members joined the NSRA at the VFW show! Don Walters of Diamondhead and his friend, Susan Pyles were enjoying the VFW show in a '66 Mustang. This was their first show with their red and black beauty and seemed to love it!
New member Don Walters The other new member is Chad Ambrose, who, along with his wife Gaynell and their son, Chad, were all supporting the VFW show in their Chevy Apache truck. They've owned the Apache since '72 and have restored it to it's full glory. They've won many awards over the years and always enjoy bringing it to shows.

The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year. www.streetrod101.com/safetyinspection.html

Adamec Harley Davidson Pre-Week Car and Bike Show! Photos & Story by: Brian Barsama The earliest show we attend is a local show. Hosted by Callahan Cruisers this show has become a constant for us. This may not be our car club but this is our car family around Jacksonville. This was the first show we attended after moving to Florida from Mississippi. Good music, good cars, and bike family, and great rides being brought together in parking lot of Baymeadows Adamec Harley Davidson. It quickly fills up. A wide variety of vehicles attend this show and is pretty much open to what you bring. This show is a close and personal for the local pinup ladies. Do not be surprised if you have a young lady ask to take pictures at this show. Every year the fund raising from the show goes to something worthy cause. The handmade auto parts art trophies are always a great attraction for the show. This show kick things into gear for North Florida shows and starts popping off events everywhere in Florida soon after!

5th Annual Kruisin 4 Kidz Photos & Story by: Brian Barsama March 4,2017 This show is a local favorite hosted on Dinsmore Baptist Church grounds. This show is our second year going as a family. Almost hitting two hundred cars, cars come from all around to share in the festivities. Jump houses, play grounds, great food served by the show staff, and activities give this show is a huge family atmosphere. The local state troopers even get involved showcasing their old police cars and majorly fun rollover simulator. This show is for the kids, about the kids, and doing what we do best raising money for good and showing off. Now what people really come to see! THE BURNOUT CONTEST. This contest is not a freestyle event but doing burnouts is always cool. The cars line up in the box and the crowd just goes wild during every burnout showing support for any takers. This years was special in many ways, sporting a paper license tag, a $70,000 ride, burning the rubber off, a new Hell Cat. A club truck with a first-time lady burnout contestant rocking the joint and spraying rubber everywhere completely wowing the crowd. The show of day came from a Grandpa taking the win. Puffing Pink Smoke and completely seizing the crowd with pre burnout fun. All these things were special but not what made this burnout competition really stand out. The last competitor returning champ from my understanding, pulled in. His Camero lined up and ready with his girlfriend cheering him on. I still can hear her words “ I told him he can do it and he can go all out. We better be ready talking with all her friends close by. He starts his run and people come charging up with cameras and video recorders handy. He puts down a lot of smoke and a good burnout. Once the car came to stop, the driver jumped straight out to his girlfriend, goes to his knee and pops the question before the smoke even clears. He walked away with the biggest win she said yes. We could have stayed all day at this show. The kids loved it, the owners loved it. I hope to make it a third time visiting this show next year.

Learning how to drive! The Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance March 10, 2017 Photos & Story by: Brian Barsama The month of March is here. Mega car show time has come to Florida. Two previous shows under our belt this month, a large Mega show coming up in Daytona as Spring Turkey Run approaches, and a pinup event coming. I decided to cool it, and stay at home. Do the family thing for a weekend. I can tell you that failed. A friend of mine decided to go to the Concours d’ Elegance and go to the auctions. He fell In love with a Model T truck. He decided to buy it, he bought it. Problem was from the auction to where the trucks and trailers was a good distance away. Not knowing how to start, drive, or even turn on this model T. In Jacksonville, Model T’s are around but not common place. No one at the auction knew how to start it. Naturally, I get the call can you help. My friend picks me and my kids up and hauls us up to Amelia Island. Well we had to wait for the other cars to leave so we walked around. First thing going into this show you notice is a test drive a classic car station. 58 Corvette, 65 Mustang, 69 Camero, and a really cool Caddy. I had to drive the Caddy. I have drove everything else before. Another notch on my belt. I finally make it around the corner leading to the golf course hotel. There it is, test drive Porsche, test drive Jaguars, and test drive a McLaren. Yes McLaren. I thought to myself, I better leave or I will be into trouble. We go to the course and see all the new car displays, every luxury brand you can think of. We make it to the green I see every luxury car, classic, exotic, racing, speed car, or super rare variety you can imagine. I was so lost in my drooling, I forgot to take pictures of the field. We work our way to tents and the cars just completely another level of car dreams. This is truly a rich man’s playground. Many notable and extremely rare cars make this mega show. This show is completely a once in a lifetime event. A quick rain, sent us for cover and ended my fit of drooling. Sending volunteers and car owners racing to cover these works of art. We finally were ready to get the Model T. I admit, I did not want to get it, but I promised help. I ended up giving a quick lesson on driving and starting the Model T. I had my friend drive it around a bit. I drove it on to the trailer and helped them secure it, like any other car person would. Our day was done! If it was not for a driving lesson in Model T, I would have missed probably the coolest rides in country. This Mega show is not for faint of heart by no means. This is the ultimate show class and luxury on the East Coast.

The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance is an automotive charitable event held each year during the second weekend in March at The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island in Amelia Island, Florida. A New York Times article about celebrity car ownership listed "the nation's top concours d'elegance: Pebble Beach in California, Meadow Brook in Michigan, Amelia Island in Florida and the Louis Vuitton Classic in midtown Manhattan." A concours d'elegance (French, literally "a competition of elegance") is according to New York Times writer Keith Martin like a "beauty pageant for rare and elegant cars". Each entry is rated for authenticity, function, history, style and quality of restoration by a team of judges that includes specialists for each car type. A perfect score is 100, but any imperfection, no matter how slight, requires a fractional point deduction. Classes are arranged by type, marque, coachbuilder, country of origin, or time period. Judges select first, second, and third-place finishers for each class in the event, and the judges confer the best of show award on one car from the group of first-place winners. In addition, a group of honorary judges - typically individuals who have made significant contributions to the automotive industry or motorsports - give subjective awards to recognize standout vehicles regardless of class ribbons, as well as memorial awards created to honor automotive industry personages. Businessman and car collector Bill Warner, a photographer and writer for Road & Track magazine since 1971, founded the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 1996 at the urging of other northeast Florida auto enthusiasts who wanted a classic car show in Florida like the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California. Warner selected Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, which had provided service to his parents as well as his wife, as the beneficiary of the event. The first event was held April 6, 1996 at Ritz -Carlton Amelia Island. Warner assembled a group of 163 cars and attendance was around 2,200. By 1999 attendance had increased to 8,500; 205 cars were exhibited; and $268,000 was raised for Community Hospice. The New York Times assigned a reporter to write a story. In his full-page feature article, Keith Martin stated, "The Amelia Island event, which is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, is the only one in its region to aspire to the same standard of excellence (as the) Concours d'Elegance at Pebble Beach, in California, as well as the Louis Vuitton Classic at Rockefeller Center". Most of the owners display their cars because they want everyone who appreciates style and beauty to see their project. Most view the weekend as a social gathering rather than a special interest event. The organizers attempt to invite vehicles from varying time periods so that spectators who prefer a certain style of car will always find several examples to examine. Information from Wikipedia

By: Gizmo Its wonderful and truly a blessing that we get a chance to meet, and befriend many talented car and truck builders. This moth I had the pleasure to discuss the relatively new operation Boosted Innovations, owned and operated by Nick Sherlock. Like most if not all of us this young man started out in this motorized pastime, tinkering at a very young with small motorized conveyances. Dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, and before that R.C. cars and buggys. Like most as he aged just a little and with the help of family, he moved up a notch to a 90's version of a Chevy pick up truck. His first vehicle that he quickly began to modify and learn to make it go faster. Next he moved up a little higher to get an 02 Camaro SS, LS powered. And again started modifying and making it too go faster. Seems like a common theme for most if not all of us gearheads. After learning the ins and outs of this machine, he began a quest to reprogram these engines for more performance. He honed his reprograming skills on that Camaro so to speak, always looking for just a little more Horsepower. Next he was able to get an 04 Chevy pickup with a 5.3 LS platform powered to start a serious effort to go really fast and make large amounts of power by adding a turbo to it. Which then led to drag racing it and laying down some impressive E.T.s. It presently is equipped with two turbos, to make it go just that much faster. He started working out of a friends shop helping with engine swaps and doing the computer tuning while there, and working with customers and friends to make their cars and trucks go faster. Since late last year he has been able to start equipping a shop of his own, and Since January 1 of this year opened for business full time. Its always great to meet folks that are young and have the same passion with all things automotive as most of us old timers, we do so need a young touch in this hobby/obsession of ours, and to know there is a new gearhead coming up behind us. However in Nicks case he has kind of passed many of us up one could say. He can build engines and do tuning, install power adders such as turbos and Nitrous systems, and if you happen to break something in the driveline in your quest to haul butt, have no fear he can fix and set up rear ends, and rebuild transmissions as well. He is very capable of doing LS, style conversions in older cars and trucks too. He enjoys working with his customers who want more performance from their cars and trucks. His shop specializes in performance mods and go fast goodies, for fuel injected LS powered machines. I know personally of his talent first hand, he did the start up tune for my Chases Big Truck project, that I modified the harness to suit the needs of this old tuck. And it fired up without a glitch. As soon as it becomes drivable, I will return to him to do some real time road testing and tuning and making adjustments to the program as necessary. So if you have a need for speed drop in and chat with Nick, he can hook you up. Oh and the truck with the two stacks out of the engine compartment is the go fast pick me up truck with two turbos. And the Camaros in the shop are some customers cars, neither of them are slouches in the Horsepower dept. And the one on the rack just got a locker and a serious gear change and will most likely in the future see a power adder. Don't mess with these cars and truck. Consider yourselves warned. Later Gizmo

A Daddy’s Story October 23, 2012 was a bittersweet day. It was the day my son was born but there was a lingering cloud of despair over the event. Just 9 days prior my wife and I were told us there was something wrong with him. Something the previous ultrasounds had missed. He was only going to be born with half a heart. My son Jason Jr., or JJ as he’s been called since he was in the womb, has a condition called HLHS. The short version is the left side of his heart, the part responsible for collecting his oxygenated blood from his lungs and pumping it throughout his body was a fraction of the normal size. Too small to function correctly. A fatal condition if there were no interventions within the first few days after birth. But all hope was not lost. After local doctors suspected something was wrong they sent us to Ochsner in New Orleans due to their stellar pediatric cardiology program, as well as a surgeon who had many years of experience with these children. There is no cure for his condition but there was a treatment. A very difficult one to make but we had faith that it was the right thing for our son. The treatment consists of a series of 3 open heart surgeries to create new pathways for his blood to travel and allow the half-heart he has to be able to function as close to a whole heart as possible. His 1st surgery was at 8 days old, Halloween 2012. It was the most painful sight I’ve ever seen to see him after the surgery so I’ll spare the details. It wasn’t an easy road either. After that surgery he had a cardiac arrest, 2 strokes with left sided weakness after and a new onset of seizures. However he was strong and fought through it and 6 weeks later was able to come home with no complications from any of his ordeal. During the nearly 2 months he was in the hospital, times were already tough on us as a family. My wife elected to stay close to him while I came home with our other children to be able to continue our daily routines of school and work while going to visit them on the weekends. Thankfully, one of the social workers got her a room at the Ronald McDonald House of Greater New Orleans. They were able to provide her with room and board for a very affordable amount we would not have found elsewhere. It was her home for his entire hospital stay. On the weekends when the kids and I would visit, the manager of the house never failed to provide our other kids with toys, games, movies and other things to help keep their minds off of their baby brother and what he and the rest of us were going through. He also provided us with passes for the whole family to the zoo and aquarium. That year we also spent Thanksgiving at the RMH. The volunteers and staff provided the families staying there with so much food that there were still leftovers a week later when we came back to visit. In March of 2013, at 5 months old, JJ found himself heading back to Ochsner for his 2nd open heart surgery. And again we found ourselves heading back to RMH. This surgery was much easier on him and us as well and he only spent a couple of weeks in the hospital and of course the rest of us at RMH and they were still providing us with the things we needed in that time. In July of 2016, JJ was back at Ochsner for his 3rd surgery, the final step in his 3 part restructuring. This time we were able to spend the nights in his room as he was not in ICU post-op, but had we not been able to stay with him, we know we would have been at the Ronald McDonald House once again. This time he was able to come home 9 days after his surgery and after a couple of weeks he began to get stronger and more active I’m happy to say that now he is loving life and thriving in it and doing fantastic. His check-ups have all been great, his heart is functioning very well and he is very energetic, active and intelligent. If you ask him what he wants to be when he grows up and he says he wants to be a firefighter, astronaut and farmer. All at once. Farm at our house, work at the volunteer fire department down the road from us and go into space and visit Mars. He defied the odds, defied the prognoses and defied
disabilities both physical and mentally from his ordeals and has come out to be one of the smartest, funniest and most caring people I have ever met. And that’s not a biased opinion as anyone could have a conversation and take away the same feelings. There’s much we still don’t know on our journey through life with this special child, but there are 2 things we do know. First, Ochsner is the only place we want to be for his medical procedures and Ronald McDonald House of Greater New Orleans would be our refuge in our time of need. It is a wonderful place with wonderful staff and volunteers. As well as other families who are coping with the hardest times of their lives with their own sick children. The support there is second to none from church groups coming in to help, numerous people who are there to offer support and advice and a shoulder to lean on when all feels lost and hopeless. I know for a FACT that had we been anywhere else, especially after his 1st surgery and the complications, we all would have suffered some sort of mental or nervous breakdowns. But, thanks to RMH, that time of our lives was made as easy as possible to allow us time to deal with our new reality while providing everything and more for our entire family. I personally will forever be indebted and thankful to RMH in New Orleans for what they did for us and anytime somebody asks for a suggestion for a charity to contribute to, there is no hesitation in my answer. Jason Gasaway Sr.
