If you’re comparing your gifts with someone else’s, before long you’ll start competing, trying to outperform, to out dress, out drive and out build. You'll be competing in a race you’re not even designed to be in. When you compare, you’ll get discouraged because there will always be somebody that’s more gifted, more talented, more beautiful, more successful. Take the talent you have and develop it. Hone that skill. Learn, grow, get better, and God will give you more …… Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo April and time for the 6th Annual Gulf Coast Auto Show hosted by the Coast Cruizers and Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine. This first weekend in April is our start to the show season. The Gulf Coast Auto Show starts Friday April 6 and ends April 7 at the close of our 1st Saturday night Cruise-in at Edgewater Mall. All the Coast Cruizers and I want to thank everyone who has supported our Show and Cruise-in’s and thank you for your contributions to our handicap van program with donations and gift prizes that are use at our monthly Cruise-in’s. Almost all the clubs have a charity or two they contribute too. The Coast Cruizers work with organizations on the Gulf Coast, to locate a child who most likely will need a refurbished handicap van to get the family around. All donations we collect go into our handicap van program. The next few months will be busy with so many shows to choose from. For some, local shows are all they attend, except for the one or two weekend shows that just are a must do. The Atomic Blast April 20-21 is one of my must do events. The Atomic Blast is a hot rod family event that you and your kids (grand kids) will always remember. If you have never been you owe it to yourself to come on out to the Gulfport Dragway and see for yourself. Plenty of things to see and do for everyone. Okay off my promotional soapbox and onto some e-mails Jimbo, As you know most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things, thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom, He made seniors lose co-ordination so they would drop things, requiring them to bend, reach, and stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature, requiring more trips to

If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich. #5 - Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years. #4 - Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing. #3 - All of us could take a lesson from the weather It pays no attention to criticism.

#2 - In the 60's, people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal. #1 - Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow. Please share this wisdom with others, while I go to the bathroom. gptteebyrd@ Jimbo, Burning Up The Beaches 2018 is geared up to be the best yet! Every entry is a chance to get in our Money Booth to catch cash and prizes! We welcome back the fantastic Emerald Gold band for Saturday night, Butch Patrick "Eddie Munster" and the Munster cars will be at the show, along with NFL great Fred Robbins! And lastly, the Lokar Car Show from Velocity Network will be filming on site, looking for YOU and your hot car! Don't miss this party, see you in May! dtashikarcemeraldcoast@ Jimbo, Remember that snow we had last month, well this is what happened to me... So that snow covered morning went like this; 8:00 I made a snowman. 8:10 A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn't make a snow woman. 8:15 So, I made a snow woman. 8:17 The nanny of the neighbors complained about the snow woman's voluptuous chest. 8:20 The gay couple living nearby grumbled that it could have been two snowmen instead. 8:25 The vegans at No. 12 complained about the carrot nose, as veggies are food and not to decorate snow figures with. 8:28 I am being called a racist because the snow couple is white. 8:31 The Muslim gent across the road wants the snow woman to wear a headscarf. 8:40 Someone calls the cops who show up to see what's going on. 8:42 I am told that the broomstick of the snowman needs to be removed because it could be used as a deadly weapon. Things get worse after I mutter : "Yeah, if it's up your a***" 8:45 Local TV news crew shows up. I am asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snow-women? I reply, "Snowballs" and am called a sexist. 8:52 My phone is seized and thoroughly checked while I am being blindfolded and flown to the police station in a helicopter. 9:00 I'm on the news as a suspected terrorist bent on stirring up trouble during this difficult weather. 9:10 I am asked if I have any accomplices. 9:29 A little known jihadist group has claimed it was their plot. Moral: There is no moral to this story. It's just the America we live in today! gptteebyrd@

Many states issue non-repairable salvage certificates. For parts only, no title EVER or scrap only/certificate of destruction. Now, if you keep your car a title to drive it on the road cannot be issued to you in some states, (FL, LA, TX, VA, MD, NY) just to name a few but there are many others. During Hurricane Harvey hundreds of classic cars were flooded with fresh rain water in Houston, TX. These cars now are being auctioned, many being running and driving, as non-repairable flood vehicles. 1957 Chevy Belairs, Roadrunners, Caddy Convertibles, etc. What you can do 1) Keep control: Have your car remain with you during the claim process. 2) Pre-insure your car: Insure your car for an agreed value, 20K, 30K, etc., whatever you've agreed to. Insurance companies want out as cheaply as they can just in case of a claim and will “suggest” a lower value. Don't fall for it. 3) Deal with your insurance company: Not the other parties (if there are any) insurer. They are NOT your friends. 4) Get estimates: Take or car to a shop you are comfortable with. You don't HAVE to use their insurance company's shop. 5) Seek legal advice: You may need to hire an attorney if you want to keep YOUR CAR!! 6) Organize your clubs: Contact your state's legislators as a voting block. 7) Problems keeping your car: If your classic car is totaled, running or not, and you keep it. You will have many problems to be able to drive it on the road. Not repairable, parts only, or floods are major problems to overcome. I'm no expert but when you've been in the business of classic cars for over 50 years, you tend to learn a thing or two. I have a dealer's license and own a body shop. I buy classics via salvage auctions all the time. I've been thru it and have seen it all. Next time I'll tell you what happens when you and your classic car title become separated. On the lighter note: I've been to CTC for the past 20 years and absolutely have a ball each and every time. You do know how to party!! Cruise on my friends. Respectfully Submitted, Skip M.

Jimbo, “Your Classic Car to the Crusher?” Now, that being said, we can talk about current events. When your classic car (or any car as far as that goes) is involved with an insurance claim the process starts. First thing that happens is you lose control. Your cars are towed to a controlled impound lot. You are removed from your car. Next, the insurance adjusters take over. Your classic car is now just a claim like any other wreck. After the adjusters for the insurance company state the value of your car (no longer a classic) your car will be totaled at 60% to 70% of that value. Next your car is off to the salvage pool to be auctioned as a salvage vehicle. This happens generally if your car is drivable or not. If you want to keep your car, many new problems now occur.

Parenting Isn't Easy Q: Should I have a baby after 35? A: No, 35 children is enough. Q: I’m two months pregnant now. When will my baby move? A: With any luck, right after he finishes college. Q: What is the most reliable method to determine baby’s sex? A: Childbirth Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she’s borderline irrational. A: So what’s your question? Q: My childbirth instructor says it’s not pain I’ll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right? A: Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current. Q: When is the best time to get an epidural? A: Right after you find out that you’re pregnant. Q: Is there any reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labor? A: Not unless the word “alimony” means anything to you. Q: Is there anything I should avoid while recovering from childbirth? A: Yes, pregnancy. Q: Do I have to have a baby shower? A: Not if you change the baby’s diaper very quickly. Q: Our baby was born last week. When will my wife begin to feel and act normal again? A: When the kids are in college.

Chef Mike is a direct decedent of the original Cajuns that landed in St. Martinsville, Louisiana in 1755 from the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. They brought along their unique culture of food, music, dance and their values of family and community. At a very early age, Chef Mike learned and developed his Cajun-creole skills and cooking techniques from his two grandmothers. Ever since Chef Mike opened his first restaurant in the mid 80’s, he’s been trying to do something a little different - to bring authentic and original Cajun and Creole cuisine east of the Mississippi, but not like the way southern Louisianans are used to. Over the course of almost three centuries, Cajun cuisine and Creole cuisine influenced each other, borrowed from each other, and ultimately merged in a style of cooking called “melange.” But Chef Mike wants to separate Cajun cuisine from Creole cuisine, and feature dishes that highlight each of their unique, enduring qualities. That is the objective of his new restaurant in Pearl River, Louisiana - Cajun Mike’s Kitchen, to open his family vault of recipes and share them. Chef Mike’s signature dishes are prepared each morning by Chef Mike himself, using only the freshest Gulf Seafood available. Chef Mike’s menu includes some of his own original recipes like Steak Anna, Soft Shell Crab Mah Mah, Crabmeat Roberta, Oyster Jamaine, Catfish Shelia, Shrimp Pasta Josephine and Chef Mike’s famous Shrimp and Grits that’s available each and every day. Whether you’re just passing through Southeast Louisiana or live just right around the corner, come on by and give it a try, “ Bon Appetite”.

The Billiot Boys at Swamp Stomp 9 This year at Swamp Stomp 9, these two beautiful little boys were stealing hearts and making money! Yes, that's right - they earned $15 in tips for taking pictures. Now, I may be bias because I am their mother, but man are they beautiful! Michael Douglas, 5, and Lorenzo Marcello, 3, with their long hair are often mistaken for girls, but believe me they are all boy! As you can see in the photos, they are a couple of tough little pachucos! Besides the love of their toy cars and collection of battery operated vehicles, they love being under the hood helping the family mechanics, their Paw Paws, Faron and Kenny, and Uncle Tweet. We believe in supporting Swamp Stomp and the Boneyard Kreeper's cause, the “Grant A Wish Foundation, so we try to make sure they make it every year, dressed to impress and ready to see life size Hot Wheels. We hope that our boys can see the importance of helping others while appreciating the true beauty of the art of the Car Culture. One thing us car lovers know is that in the car culture, you have no time for trouble; you need a job to fund that hobby! In the long run, we think that our influence will lead them in the right direction for a great and healthy lifestyle. Special Thanks to Vanessa Jay, owner of the '37 Chevy Coupe and Lost Souls Car Club's Allen Joseph Mire III, owner of the '52 Chevy and Brad Hogan, owner of the '36 Ford. AKA Poppys Garage April 2018 Spring has definitely sprung, how do I know? Well I know this because every morning, I wake lately to every thing outside being sufficiently covered in a yellow powdery substance, to us earthlings you know as pollen. But I know really what it is. It is a toxic substance dropped off nightly by aliens from the planet Hista, and let me tell you these little aliens are very mean. This is the dried byproducts of fuel they use in their space craft from the fuel depot on the planet Urin 8. They disperse this fuel byproduct nightly, very high in our own atmosphere, this hista picks up more pollutants and gets sufficiently concentrated to cause all sorts of problems for us here on earth. These polluting products cause many of us much grief, itchy watery eyes, red runny noses, and outbursts at times of uncontrollable sneezing. I am sure in sufficient concentrations it may be the cause other ailments as well. The next reason I know spring has sprung is, so many car shows and cruise nights popping up on calendars and message boards like wildflowers. So many shows on the same day and not enough hours in a day to attend more than say 6. I have personally with my friend Al attended 5 shows and cruise nights in one day, but that's another story and an adventure in itself. It seems we down here in the south attend a planning meeting in the beginning of the New Year to try to schedule events so as not to conflict with others events. And no sooner does that plan get printed out, low and behold it seems a great flood of events come in from all parts of our area. So much for a plan huh? I would enjoy supporting every charitable event that goes on every weekend, and every cruise night all over the south, but it is just an almost impossibility. So I, like most of my gear head brothers and sisters support our local clubs and their efforts for their local chosen charities. There are times I enjoy taking a little trip further from home base to see little towns all over this state, and the fine cars and trucks those places have supporting those local clubs. All of these events I know are for wonderful causes, and are put on by some caring folks. I guess my point is get out the old ride, dust off the yellow stuff, and head out, hit the road, and enjoy the ride. And if them mean Histas get to you, stop at almost any corner drug store, (that sounds so familiar) and go inside and get some of that Anti Hista stuff. They've got all kind of names for them, so just get some, till them mean little aliens leave for more and needed fuel, them little jerks. Till then happy sneezing, and motoring, may God Bless you all, and Happy Easter (Resurrection Sunday) from the yellow powder hista covered carriage house Gizmo.

Lucedale Hardee's Breakfast Gang wishes everyone well and hope you are as excited to see spring rear it's head as we are. A large group of cars and trucks was present at Hardee's for the March breakfast and it seemed everyone was reluctant to leave. We were happy to see Coy Turner up and about enjoying visiting with his car comrades. The car featured this month has special meaning to me. My husband, Mike Lachaussee, purchased this '46 Mercury eight years ago from a family in Petal, MS. As you can see from the first couple of photos it was going to require some work. Little did he know it would be eight years down the road before this project was drawing to an end. It has truly been a labor of love (and at times hate!). Mike has totally restored this car from ground up. This is a frame off restoration. He completely rebuilt the engine, transmission, Columbia two speed rear axle and front end brakes. It was originally a 239 V8 flathead but has been bored with new pistons, rods and valves. It has two carburetors 3/4 race cam, dual exhaust and has cold air and heat (of which I am grateful)! All the paint is a Lachaussee original! Mike has chrome reverse wheels with baby moons that is soon to be installed and the next step will be upholstery. If you ask me, I think this is a beauty that speaks to us of a past gone by. How rewarding it must have been for Mike to bring this old worn out vehicle back to life. Congratulations on a job well done. Rick Newman of Hurley brought this all original '47 Cadillac for everyone to enjoy. He purchased this Caddy several years ago from Texas. Rick has always been involved and interested in old cars. In addition to the Caddy, he has a '29 Lincoln he is in the process of restoring, a '53 Packard, '47 Ford convertible, '23 Model T, '29 Model A and a '66 Chevy Truck. Rick is happily retired from the Fire Department. Thanks for bringing this classy ride to the breakfast Bob Strahan of the Cental Community brought this '37 Ford stock with factory Ford bed. He has a '56 Ford pickup, a '41 Chevy Truck, a '46 Chevy, a '47 Knucklehead Motorcycle. Thanks for sharing this piece of history. Please come join us every second Friday of the month at Hardee's in Lucedale. No admission fee, just good conversation, coffee and cars. 10

Started out this month with a little Dinner cruise in at Woodys Roadside in Biloxi. Had around 75 cars show up for a good event. Then Saturday we went over to the VFW in Bay Saint Louis for their car show. One of the first shows of the year and they had 55 cars for their event. Saturday night we made it to Long Beach Harbor for the 4th Saturday Cruise Inn. Always a good time at this one with around 25 cars on a cool evening. We made it back over to Bay Saint Louis for the 20th Annual Gnat Nationals, This was one you needed to make they had 254 cars/trucks competing for 87 awards. The new Misfits Street Krewzers board officers and the club members helping/ promoting/organizing/working together made it the biggest/most successful Show the club has had congrats to them. The next week we ended up in the Kiln for Hancock High Schools commitment to graduation 2020 day we had 39 cars/trucks show up to introduce the students to the classic/custom car lifestyle. Next up was the monthly 2nd Friday cruise in at Dairy Queen on Gause in Slidell they had a nice little turnout on a cool evening for this one. As always see y'all somewhere or everywhere and remember to watch for our friends on bikes out riding also. Allen Cole

The 9th Annual Spring Street Festival Classic Car Show was awesome as usual, but if you had asked me the week leading up to it I would have told you I had my doubts. I started watching the advance weather forecast about a week out and it was 60% chance of rain, then it went to 80%, 90 and 100, then back down to 80, down to 60 and then on Thursday before the show on Saturday back to 80%. Friday morning it was 60% and George Miller said come on we're having the show…on the way there it fell to 50% chance of rain. The forecast had us all on a roller coaster ride all week. Friday afternoon it rained on me from Gulfport, MS to New Roads, LA, about 180 miles. There is nothing like pulling a 7,000 pound trailer with it raining hard, through the heavy traffic of Baton Rouge on a Friday afternoon. I told Phillip Thibodeaux they paid me to drive through Baton Rouge… I was doing the show for free, lol. When I pulled into New Roads, there was no rain and I was able to get the Hot Rod Show trailer set up and leveled Friday afternoon. Then I joined the guys down on the river for free catfish. New Roads is a great little town on the banks of the False River. I just love it. The False River used to be a part of the Mississippi River, but back when they were trying to straighten out the mighty Mississippi for navigational purposes, they eliminated a 10 mile section that became the False River. Looks just like the Mississippi, but it has a beginning and an end. They call it an ox bow river, now it's a great big lake, with camps all the way around it for the 20 miles. There was a big bass tournament going on Sunday morning as I was getting ready to head back. I love the area. This was the 3rd year Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show has done the show and they have already me booked for next year. Even with the weather… we had over 200 cars that attended! (We would have had over 400 cars with a nice forecast.) Rain wise… we got a medium type shower for about 10 minutes, a little later on a light shower for about another 10 minutes and we never missed a beat, we were prepared for what little rain we did get. Auto Zone really stepped up to the plate for us with this show providing two truckloads of door prizes valued at over $7,000. Powered by Auto Zone…that's what it means, a great thank you to Auto Zone for supporting the cruisers and local charities. Our Mega 50/50 was over $3,000 with the winner taking home $1,577. The lady that won the cash was beside herself, she was so happy. The other half of the Mega 50/50 went to Pointe Coupee Hospice. It's one of the favorite parts of my job, making a winner happy and a worthy charity some nice proceeds. This year's show was a tribute to Pop Langlois, one of the founders of the show that passed away this past year. It was sure tough walking in the local café for breakfast Saturday morning and not seeing Pop… there making sure I got coffee. Pop won the Cruisin The Coast Raffle Car the year that the

12

giveaway car was the 32 Highboy Roadster. Pop also owned a 72 Chevelle SS, the family had both cars on display and both cars were also featured on this year's car show shirts. His family was all there and an annual award has been created in Pop's honor. After the show and I got everything loaded up and wound down with George and Phillip. My hotel, Morel's Inn is on Main Street, a classic old Inn about 25 yards from where my Hot Rod Show trailer was set up. As soon as I got back to the room, I got a shower and then went out the back door to Morel's Seafood, about 15 yards away down the hill… sticking out over the water. They have a good seafood platter and I pigged out. By 8 o'clock I was back in the room and was gone, I was so tired from a long day I was out like a light. I woke up at midnight, slipped into some shorts and took my dog Maxie out for a stroll downtown. It was peaceful and quiet in town at that hour and then we walked along the False River. Went back to room and back to sleep about 1:30 and the alarm went off at 6 AM, Sunday morning I got the trailer hooked up, had breakfast at the little café downtown and headed home. Once home, I took the Hot Rod Show trailer straight to the car wash as I always do, then got the trailer put away inside the shop, opened everything up so I made sure everything dried out properly and was home by 2 PM. At 2:01 I started writing this 17 FOREVER column. Jimbo had been holding the presses of the magazine for me so I had to get it done. My next car show is Burning Up The Beaches in Destin, FL Friday and Saturday May 4 and 5, one of my favorite car shows of the year! The Destin Commons Mall is a Disney World type

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

shopping, dinning setting, really, really nice. This year Butch Patrick, Eddie Munster from the old TV show “The Munsters” will be at Burning Up The Beaches to meet fans, sign autographs and take photos. Butch will also have two actual cars from the TV show on hand at the car show. The Munster Coach and The Coffin Dragster. I got to interview Butch at a car show in Lakeland, FL a couple years ago and we'll do it again in Destin. He has some great stories to tell. The Munsters were filmed on a sound lot in Hollywood…on one side of his set was The Carol Burnett Show and the other side was Rawhide. Eddie had a fun childhood, we'll discuss some of those adventures. When I tell you this story about my friend Luther Donaldson, just know its one that will always touch my heart! I understand this is a MotorSports Magazine, but sometimes it the people behind the scenes that we don’t end up talking about. I have found that it’s here you find some of the best stories. Just like my friend Luther. Luther Donaldson, born June 1, 1934, just miles from where his home is now, in Morris, Alabama. Luther told me he enlisted in the US Navy in the early 50’s and soon after was fighting in the Korean War. When he returned home he ended up marring “the meanest women in the world” he tells me, with a huge smell on his face. That young lady was his loving bride for over 65 years before her passing this past summer. Luther has 3 grown amazing children, and a lifetime of memories shared together. This is a man of honor, respect, and as I call them good people! Being a family friend, I went to pay & give my respect to Luther and his family over the sudden lose of his beloved family member. Knowing they all gather every evening at his home for dinner, I stopped in one evening. After the refusal of cake and coffee, Luther showed me the pictures that lined each room, all his treasures, all the little reminders from his life, all things from this wonderful life he has on display. All with pride as each item fills his heart with the memory from it as he catches a glance of it walking by. While honored with the tour, I found myself getting to know this amazing man and his life in his own home. I was in my own little field trip and soaking it all in. That's when I ran across the two pictures that really caught my attention. Two Framed black and white pictures on the wall in his office, side by side in the style of frames. One of a statue of this formal 20 foot something tall statue he called "the man, with this much younger Luther standing at his feet. The other picture was of the tall statue of 'the man broken in half, lying on the floor of what he called “Luther’s Garage”, at shop at his family home in Fultondale, Alabama. Of course, I had to ask!! The story he tells me is this. He had always done body work after her returned home from the military. He might of helped a few buddies, (moonshiner runners) change the colors on their cars if needed… wink wink””. He later went on to open his own paint & body repair shop just south of town. After a few years he went to work with a close friend of his doing auto damage appraisals. This is when he runs into the damage done to the big statue that at that point and time was standing outside of a local tire store in Birmingham, Alabama. He tells me a person, ran into him and knocked him over. This was in the late 70’s, so as he was curious and looked at this mess along with other by standers. He asked the owner, “What ya’ going to do with him?” the owner needing it out of his way and overwhelmed with what was going on, said ”taking him to the dump I can’t fix him!” Luther looked him over and told the owner, “You get him to my shop, I’ll fix him.” Luther was up for that challenge.

So as they loaded up the pieces of what once stood a 20 foot tall fiberglass structure of a iconic Birmingham land mark. A few folks felt as if they would never see it again. All the neighborhood kids gathered to watch all the excitement as it turned down the street. It took several people to figure out just how to get this huge statue off of this roll back and with will and grit they were able to do it. They stuffed each piece of him into Luther’s small but modest two car garage at his home. Months went by, just as daily life would go on also with family, work and other such activities. What seemed like only a few days of these feet of this statue hanging out from the garage doors turned into a good year as he recalled! The recovery mission was a big task, but of course it had to be done right and that it was. Then in late October in 1979 Luther, with help from his son Jay along with a few neighborhood kids made a pulley system on a tree near the garage and was able to once again have "the man up on his feet again. It stood taller than the garage and the house. They told me you could see it from a few streets down the way. Bringing in even more attention again. After all the hard work and time Luther spent to repair “the man. The owner wanted to insure this would never happen again, so they placed “the man on the Roof of the Bridgestone Tire Store In Birmingham Alabama. He was a icon figure in this area already for this family owned business, now he was even more of icon and even growing into a stopping point for photos. You could now see “The Man” from the interstate. One day I asked Jay, Luther’s son for a ride to the airport. On our way he tells me “the man” dad restored is right up here on the right. All this went in one ear and out the other faster than that flight to Atlanta. Months go by and I am on my way to Birmingham for business meeting as this is a road I hardly ever travel. But Jay had taken me this way as a detour due to construction and I tried it. That's when I see something out of the corner of my eye and I knew what it was as soon as I looked at it. And remembered the story Jay had told me also. And my heart was full of JOY instantly. I have a field trip for me and my buddy. One Luther and I will never forget. I picked Luther up for lunch on a cloudy February day. I told him I had a HUGE surprise for him. He was annoyed I wouldn’t tell him where we were going. You see he is what they call a back-seat driver! And likes to be in control just like all you men do!! But this day, I was sure he would enjoy this trip I just didn’t know how much. As we pulled up to the site I was sure he had never seen before, I was plugging a little more about the story as we got closer to what I was sure to be “the man.” And then Luther was able to see it from the car window, I think shock took over. “Is that him”? I asked. He was standing just off a little Highway leading to the main interstate. The owners of ’The Man’ have a tire store that goes by a different name now. But all the same it was THE MAN!! I was able to gain access to the inside of the gated warehouse. Allowing Luther and I to get up close with an old friend. As we walked up to the platform built of concrete that was holding the 22-foot-tall “Man… Luther was over whelmed with emotions. At first, he wasn’t sure it was the right one “man, then I pulled out my phone and showed him pictures that I had taken of the framed ones from in his office. We were able to notice that the buttons had smiley faces on them, something he had never told me. So when I noticed it 16 feet in the air on the statue of this man, comparing it to the picture .. Luther then was convened it was indeed the right one. The emotions got the best of the both of us and even workers that have heard of this story over the years, from people that still work for this small-town tire store. At that point it had been over almost 30 years since Luther last seen his old friend on that roof top in Birmingham. The owners had to allow for a down sizing due the economy and moved from downtown to a smaller town, luckily they decided that taking “the MAN was a MUST DO with the move. It was great to see others cared for him like Luther did. As we were driving away “the Man” stood on the side of that highway, and Luther’s eyes where as wide as they could be. He didn’t want to miss a moment of this day.. Something he had longed for over the years! This is a day that Luther and I will always cherish!! XoXo

I am a proud descendant of Irish ancestors. My Irish roots run deep. My paternal grandmother, Charlotte Larkin (originally O’Larkin) was born to Irish and French parents. My maternal grandmother, Camille Harrison, was of full Irish blood and her husband, Charlie Howell, was of Irish-Scotch ancestry. My mom’s family spent most of their lives in what is called the Irish Channel in New Orleans surrounded by other Irish immigrant families. That is where my mother grew up. St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, is celebrated in earnest in New Orleans. There are no less than 7 parades throughout the greater New Orleans area. Some are Irish/Italian events, as St. Joseph’s Day falls just two days later on March 19th. New Orleans loves a party, so there’s lots of fun to be found for St. Patrick’s Day. Bars throughout the city have events, and in the Irish Channel there are huge block parties at Parasol’s and Tracey’s every year.

Parasols Block Party The Irish have been a prominent part of New Orleans culture since the early 19th century and were instrumental in building much of the city’s infrastructure. Although most Irish immigrants arrived after the Great Famine of 1845, the first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the city was held in 1806.

City streets are a sea of green as parade participants and revelers alike don the traditional colors of Ireland. Parades consist of marching clubs, floats and bands. Marching Clubs, like the Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Club, The Corner Club and the Emerald Society of New Orleans, parade wearing kilts of clan colors and carrying canes adorned with paper flowers which are traded for a kiss to those lining the streets. In days past, the Marching Clubs would “march” from bar to bar along the designated route, drinking their way to the finish line. Today, most marching clubs no longer stop along the way. They bring their Irish whiskey and other refreshments along with them.

Parade float riders toss the makings of a good Irish stew to those parade goers. Fresh produce including cabbages, potatoes, carrots and the like are given out all along the way and are happily

We will be out there again this year with thousands of others celebrating St. Patrick and my Irish heritage. But Charlie and I will also be celebrating the return home of all of our Veterans, including the members of NOLA VFW Post 8973.

collected by those on the route. I love getting home with a wagonfull of vegetables to use in delicious meals. Of course, since this is New Orleans, beads, trinkets, moon pies and other typical parade throws are also tossed from the floats as they make their way through the streets. My grandfather, Charlie, marched in the Irish Channel St. Patrick’s parade every year with family and friends. Last year, my husband, Charlie, and I were able to march in that same parade with the NOLA VFW Post 8973. The Post, the largest active in the state, is housed in the Irish Channel and Charlie is a member. I was delighted to be able to carry on a tradition that my beloved grandfather Charlie started so many years ago.

My husband, Charlie, is a Vietnam Veteran. When he returned to the US after being in Vietnam, he was yelled at, cursed at, spit upon and denigrated by other Americans. He never felt that he and his fellow Vietnam Veterans were respected. Thankfully, that is changing. Charlie said marching with the VFW and being applauded and thanked by so many people along the way made him feel welcomed home for the first time. He finally felt like Americans are understanding and appreciating the sacrifices made, and the horrors experienced, by our fighting men and women.

By Candy Cocktail The iconic scene of cartoon character George Jetson flying through the sky in his saucer like space car around a futuristic world in the sky has surely made many of us watch and think what if. Where he hurried home to his family and lived in the clouds, greeted by his robot house keeper. While at the time the show premiered it seemed such a far off notion, many of the outrageous inventions featured on the Hanna-Barbera television series are no longer just sci-fi dreams. Making dreams reality, inventions from robots to Hoverboards have recently reached unprecedented technological advances, including that of the long awaited flying car. Several companies are creating flying vehicles that may, in a mere two years, be occupying a spot in your garage. Plus they are much more sleek than the flying car in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! Flying cars, technically known as vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (VTOL), make transportation incredibly fast and cheap. Described in an article on http://money.cnn.com , everyone's favorite transportation company Uber is set to demo flying cars by 2020. In April of last year the tech giant announced partnerships with aviation companies to develop a flying car and envisions full scale operations of a flying car network launching in 2023. In October, Uber released its ambitious vision for flying cars while stating that many hurdles remain in making the flying cars reliable, affordable and most importantly, safe. So you may not have to wait too much longer to fly through the sky for even the most mundane tasks, like running to the grocery store. On a recent episode of The List, the television show described three new flying cars already being tested. Vahana, a flying taxi by Airbus, recently passed its first test flight in Oregon where it reached heights of 16 feet. With no flight experience required, Vahana is a self-piloted flying car which acts like a drone.

Dubbed the future of urban mobility, the Vahana aircraft takes off vertically and is expected to be ready for use in two years. Riders will simply use an app to request a ride and hop on, flying to your chosen destination for around the same price as a conventional taxi. The Silicon Valley project aims to cut down on commuter times, aiming for speeds as much as four times faster than road traffic, with a flight range of about 50 miles.

The Ehang 184, another flying car, recently had its first test flight in China. Claiming to be the most eco-friendly low altitude vehicle, the soaring vehicle is always connected online with the low-altitude command center that can prohibit the autonomous aerial vehicle from liftoff during extreme weather conditions. The price and specific details will come out this summer. BBC News asserted that flying cars are the way of the future, describing a time where you park your aircraft in your garage, bring it out, unfold the wings, fly it and land at an airport.

The volocopter is another type of autonomous electric taxi that recently took its first flight through Dubai’s sky. The Germany originated e-volo VC200 Volocopter is a single-place, two passenger, 16 motor experimental electric multi rotor helicopter. Dubai is hoping that this new form of transportation will account for 25% of the transportation its people use to get around town by 2030.

Terrafuga, an American company, has created more than one version of the flying car. Currently making a two seat vehicle called the transition, a four wheel car that can both drive on the highway at 70 mph and fly in the airways at 100 mph. The vehicle which can be used for both driving and flying, and currently passes all regulations for both modes of transportation, can even go 400 miles on a full tank of gas. The flying car and drivable plane is expected to start selling in 2019 for a reported $280,000.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

The AeroMobil can hit the fastest speeds of any of the upcoming flying cars, with max speeds over 220 miles per hour when it spreads its wings to soar through the air. This roadster rolls at almost 100 miles per hour on the street. They had some growing pains with their previous model about two years ago, but now they have announced their latest prototype, the AeroMobil 4.0, available to reserve today. It should come out in 2020 with a starting price tag of $400,000. The long predicted personal air vehicles are not a novice idea. Cited on Wikipedia, Henry Ford displayed an experimental single-seat aeroplane called the "sky flivver" in 1926. After a distance-record attempt flight crashed, killing the pilot, the project was abandoned. While the Flivver was not a flying car, it gained press attention at the time, exciting the public as they thought they would have a mass-produced and affordable airplane product made, marketed, sold and maintained just like an automobile. Even Chuck Berry featured the concept of an aerocar in his 1956 song, You Can't Catch Me. In 1940, Henry Ford famously predicted: "Mark my word: a combination airplane and motorcar is coming. You may smile, but it will come. Much like the Back to the Future car, new mobility solutions are making the aeronautical vehicles of sci-fi films a reality. Dreams of traveling through a colorful cloudless sky in your own VTOL vehicles are not as far away as they once seemed. The possibility is now a reality thanks to a handful of companies racing to make flying cars part of our landscape and changing tomorrow's possibilities.

Helping us enter the era of The Jetsons, the I.F.O. or identified flying object is a two-seater drone vehicle fueled by eight electric engines with a 70 minute battery life. Passengers enter the cockpit from the ground taking a makeshift elevator that lifts passengers into the vehicle above. This 120 mph soaring vehicle is still in the concept phase, yet quite impressive nonetheless.

I travel a lot and go to many car shows and cruise-ins all over. I notice similarities as I talk to car people. Car enthusiasts love to talk about their cars to anyone who is interested. Sometimes they will talk to people who are not even that interested! Auto nuts enjoy looking and learning about other people’s cars. They enjoy their rides. They are proud of their cars. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t another car out there that really trips their trigger! Each individual has a favorite make and model, but all vehicles are admired and appreciated. Chances are that if the car enthusiast has a hot rod, he will be intrigued by other hot rods or customs and inclined to purchase more of them. If he is a purist, he will be drawn to factory stock restored vehicles. The enthusiast also may be drawn to Concourse vehicles. The variety of options available makes the chances of owning more than one classic car a definite possibility. The tradition lives on. And don’t think that women are not enthusiasts! They are just as passionate about the hobby as anyone. What is it that makes me collect a certain type of car and you another? I haven’t been able to find a definitive answer. It might be that I was influenced by the hot rods and custom cars of my youth. I wanted to customize every single car when I was young. I didn’t believe any should look as it did when it was built. I felt like everything that Detroit put out could be improved upon, especially in appearance. All vehicles could certainly use more power. It could be that I couldn’t afford to have a car when I was a teenager, much less customize one. It could be that I have had a passion for cars, new and old, ever since I was a young boy. I drew cars on anything that was handy and read all the car magazines, dreaming about those custom machines. Drag racing surely infected my thinking, too. It may be all of that and a lot more, but a passion for vehicles has eaten up my brain! Some individuals re-create the cars that their parents drove, or that they themselves drove during their high school days, or college days, or when they were first married. Statistics show that 80% of the cars are American. I believe that “Baby Boomers” had a particular interest in vehicles that has not been matched since. The number of collector cars in the United States is roughly 5 million, and 58% of the owners are “Boomers”. (Defined as those people born between 1946 and 1964.) There are roughly 76 million “Baby Boomers”. The median age of collector car owners is 56 years old. The older “Boomers” are in their 70’s now and interest in the old car hobby is beginning to wane. The question that scares me is whether the millennials will care about the cars of their grandfathers and great grandfathers, or any cars for that matter. My grandchildren are pre-teens. They think Papaw Cubby’s 1946 Ford street rod is pretty neat and plan on keeping it themselves. That makes Ole Cubby really, really happy! One thing that confuses the issue for me is that the collector-car market is really booming. Barrett-Jackson is auctioning cars for millions of dollars. Whatever the reason we love our collector cars and the old car hobby, it makes us happy. Right? There is nothing wrong with being happy, enjoying an activity we share with our friends, and taking care of both. Nothing at all! My greatest concern is; who is going to buy all our cars when we pass on? My other concern is that my wife might sell my cars and parts for what I told her I paid!!!! Uncle Ezra says: I don’t want to be a millionaire. I just want to have enough money to stare off into the distance while pumping gas!!

March 10, 2018 By: ChandaElaine It was a beautiful day at Main Street Motors in Denison, Texas, with glorious sunshine and classic, vintage, and custom cars lining the Main Street for Texoma Cars & Coffee. This month it was minicar madness as Aimee Freise of the Fort Worth Air Coolers VW Gang had her Bug on display, owners brought out their Mini's, and Rob Diver brought out his HMV Freeway. Special Mention: Rob Diver and his HMV Freeway The HMV Freeway is a three-wheeled mini-car was manufactured in the Burnsville, Minnesota, from 1979 to 1982. As Rob said, “It was designed to get 100 miles to the gallon if you drive it at 40, 100 miles to the gallon. Quite honestly, I think it is one of the worst handling cars I own. You touch one little bump in the road and it's off somewhere.” The motor is behind the driver with a CVT belt transmission. The Freeway does not have any stability issues, “But the steering geometry and everything, if you hit a bump it will veer one way or the other. You never know what it's going to do. What do they claim it would do 65. I got it up to 50 and said, 'No more.' Forty is just right.” “It's just the design itself, it's poor. The pedals are laid out wrongly. I've had to put a block of wood under the seat because it was too laid back. No gear box, no reverse. A fun little thing to have.” Rob is a British ex-pat who has been living in the United Stated since 1982. “I bought my first car the year after I came over here and collected British cars and lost track of time,” said Rob. “Then 15 years ago started on mini-cars. They're just fascinating and easy to

work on. Really, really, basic. Just the opposite to your big power machines.” What got him started collecting mini cars was, “I was driving around in Texas, and up to then I collected English cars, driving around and I drove past a chain link fence and I saw a little, rusty van with a tree growing through it and I backed-up and decided, 'I must have that.' Took me nine months to get over that fence. And I bought it. And when I found out what it was I started looking in general and I've just been collecting ever since.” Now he has “about eight” mini cars he takes out on the road. “I think I have eight driving at the moment. I keep three or four cars driving each year and I rotate them.” In addition to the eight he has a “little Mochet I'm working on and a Peel Trident. I hope to have that on the road mid-summer.” Rob said he will be bringing his mini-cars to Cruise-ins and future shows. There is even a chance he will be bringing his working Meserschmitt.

Gasser Blowout 7 By: Janice Merrill Johnt “Good people and good times” is the motto of the Southern Outlaw Gassers and no truer words could be used to describe this group of racers who are more like family than friends. Jessie Holmes, the leader behind the Outlaws, is the creator of the semi-annual Gasser Blowout race series that calls Atmore Dragway home. Holmes designed the Gasser Blowout series around 5 classes. All Gassers are invited (upon car approval by Jessie Holmes) to run in the Gasser class. Altereds, front engine dragsters, and open wheel coupes and sedans run together in the Open Wheel class. All 1974 and back cars and trucks are open to run in the Footbrake and Transbrake bracket classes. The Jr. Dragster class is open to ALL juniors and this class grows with every race! Last, but certainly not least, if you have a wicked cool car and want to show up and show out, the Exhibition class is open for those who just want to put on a show! Each Gasser Blowout race seems to get a little bigger and a little better, and Gasser Blowout 7 was no exception. Despite a weather forecast that kept everyone on edge for the week prior, Mother Nature extended her southern hospitality for racers as far away as Illinois, Ohio, and Massachusetts. For those who arrived on Friday, mid-60 degree temperatures and ample sunshine created the perfect backdrop to meet and greet and prepare for the night’s test-and-tune session. Some of the Friday arrivals included Shawn and Dana Peterman and their newly painted 1956 Ford Rolling Thunder. Shawn and Dana have attended every single Gasser Blowout event to date! Another Friday arrival was Danny Lopez’s Captain America 1956 Oldsmobile Rocket 88. Danny and his family have been building the 455 Olds powered Gasser for the past 3 years, but work on the car slowed down after Danny and his son Daniel Jr.’s boat sank in rough seas the day before Thanksgiving. Thankfully, Danny and his son were OK and the boat was able to be saved and rebuilt. Work on Captain America continued until the Lopez crew pulled out to head to the track and it was definitely worth the wait!

Mother Nature returned Saturday morning with plenty of sunshine and GBO7 officially kicked off with the fan (and driver!) favorite kid’s parade pass. It’s impossible to tell if the kids or the drivers have more fun! The clouds started rolling in early afternoon and a brief rain shower gave everyone a chance to grab a bite to eat while the Atmore Dragway crew had the track dried in no time. Sharon and Steven Rawls of Pure Blown Hell Racing sponsored the BUG contest and all 6 beautiful ladies did a wonderful job. EJ Martin took top honors, Katelyn Nelson took second place, and Cassandra Hicks, third. Plans are already in place for an even bigger BUG contest for GBO8! At age 84, Aubrey Padgett in the Big Iron 1950 Chevrolet spent the afternoon toting the front tires and cutting .001 lights to drive off with the Gasser Top Eliminator trophy! Randy Goodwin in the Nasty Nash took home with Little Eliminator Gasser trophy. Jimmy Finley in the Snake Bite 1965 Mustang took home top honors in the 3 Pedal Shootout and his crew sure knew how to celebrate! Matt Nowling in his 1972 Vega took home the win in Transbrake and runner-up in Footbrake while Bob Sills in his 1964 Fairline took home the Footbrake win. Bobby Turner in the Tates Hell Mullette edged out Sherry Goddard to take home top honors in Open Wheel. Landon Hatcher raced his way to the win in the Jr. Dragster class over Lane Scott.

You realize that this really is a sick addiction when a tear wells up when you contemplate selling the heart car to finish the dream car build. I think it would be easier to pick which leg to cut off. (Definitely the one with the bad knee, btw) …… Janice Merrill Johnt

Emerald Coast Dragway

Words by: Janice Merrill Johnt Photos by: Janice Merrill Johnt and Randy McCuddy After the launch of Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws franchise, interest in street racing hit a fever pitch. Local racers began talking about a way to race in a street environment without the risk of getting sideways with law enforcement. Adam Pettis, owner of Innovative Street Technologies in Niceville, FL, started to toss around some ideas of how to safely and legally make this happen. Pettis and his customers had an impressive group of competitive street cars ready to race, including his turbo small block Ford powered 1971 Nissan 240Z. At the same time, Emerald Coast Dragway was looking for ways to draw more cars to the track in order to keep the gates open and Pettis came up with idea behind Tri-County Grudge Fest --- a no prep, no time, heads up race series that calls ECD home. With 3 race dates this year, Tri-County Grudge Fest offers $1000 to win in both Big Tire and Small Tire classes. Pettis hopes to add a 3rd class, Factory Street, later this year. One of the fan (and racer!) favorites is the addition of a Power Wheels ® race for the kids! Mark your calendar for June 30, 2018 and come on out to Emerald Coast Dragway to watch some of the baddest Big Tire and Small Tire cars battle it out.

It’s was 1949, I’m a superintendent in Bellco Construction Corp. and I’ve got 15-18 guys working for me down in Texas City, Texas, restoring the Monsanto Chemical Corp. dock, plant, bldg. and offices. I’ve got the job, because my former company commander in the Seabees’ (15th Battalion) called me and offered me the job! The minute I got the offer, (I’m in Los Angeles) I fired up my 46’ Ford Convertible and headed east to Texas. Many of you have seen photo’s of the car, (previous issues) 59 AB block, Offy heads, Edelbrock intake) dual carbs, Harman Collins ignition, and a Modine radiator, Clay Smith camshaft. I put my 30-30 rifle in the trunk, 12 gage shotgun along with it, and prepared to go Texas and work for Bob Callahan (my commander in WWII) In Texas! I left Huntington Park, (suburb of Los Angeles) my car was lowered in front 1” and rear 2” with longer spring shackles. Dual exhaust of course, I did fine, (going to Arizona & New Mexico). Then I dropped down to Texas. From El Paso I grabbed HI Way 10 and started for San Antonio. I was still doing great until, I was leaving Fredericksburg, still on the way to San Antonio, and Texas City. (Huston was the big town next to Texas City) I’m cruising 60 mph down Hi Way 10, the national speed limit then was 55 mph. I was cheating, going 62mph. I always liked 62 because my average then would be a mile a minute. If a sign said Fredericksburg 80 miles, I knew I would be there in 80 minutes. I glance up to my rear-view mirror, and I see a black 1941 Ford sedan, spotlight sticking out the drivers side, and a big round (about 12” diameter) on the passenger side of the roof, with the opening pointed toward the front. (this was an attempt at AC in 1949, they had a duct (hose) running from the unit thru the window, and they put ice cubes to cool the air that it picked up on the roof going 60 mph! I saw him coming, and eased up on the throttle to 57 mph. I got the red light, siren, the whole 9 yards . The cop hated the car, told me lowered was against the law, dual exhaust broke the noise ordnance, etc., etc. It was 102` out, and he was sweating bad, so he wrote me a warning, and told me to “fix it, or don’t come back”. I eased on to highway 10 and continued on to San Antonio and then to Houston. It was 4 p.m. and soon to be dark. No one I know likes to drive at night, in a strange town, and a strange state. So, I dropped in to the first motel that looked clean, and had a good parking. My 46 had 8 coats maroon lacquer, I liked good paint and washed it regularly. I had waxed it often, and it always looked great! So, after checking in, I asked directions to the nearest Roller Skating Rink. “Down one block, turn left one block, and its on the corner”. In those days, you rented shoe skates, and a small 1/2 size locker for your coat or sweater. The place is real busy, so I go on the floor, sit on the benches that are there on each side for resting or waiting for a number (song that you like). I’m bending over lacing up my shoe skates boots, (ankle high) and between my skates (about 2 ft apart) I see a great pair of legs (knee to ankle) so I raise my head up slowly and I see great thighs, waist, bust, and one of the prettiest faces I’ve seen since I had left California. She is smiling at me and holding out a pack of Pall Mall Cigarettes, and in a soft, low, voice she says, “will you hold these for me? I have to do my act, out in the center of the rink”. I smile back at her, and gulp “only a blind man would say no to your wish”. She laughed turned away, and as she skated to the center of the rink I got a birds eye view of her profile –36-24-35! When she did the spins with her partner (male) I was pretty sure this was going to be a warm friendship! When she was spinning her mini skirt would fly back over her tights and those great legs were showing all the way to her tights. After her act, we skated several times, I liked the waltzes, you had to hold each other close, to feel your partner leaning, slow turning, and then swirl straight. At 10:30 the announcer came on and stated: (closing in 15

minutes). I looked at her (she told me her name was Paula when we were skating) and said “you need a ride home?” She replied “No I saw you unloading that California Car when I came to work, I have reasons I would like to leave my car here and go with you tonight, ok?” I left her there, walked very fast back to my car, and fired it up, drove back and picked up Paula. It’s about 2 a.m. and we are lying in bed, in the motel, and only a night light is on! “You having trouble with the boy friend?” I ask. She smiles and says “no” it’s a husband, not a boy friend”. “How long a husband”? Two years she replied, “and its been 1 year too many”. I’m on the right hand side of the bed on my side, and she is lying on my right arm, flashing that great smile of hers. She plants a kiss on my neck, and nature starts taking over, and I sure didn’t object! She really loves to kiss on the neck, cause driving to the Motel she slid over and kissed me on the right side of my neck! We had breakfast the next a.m. in one of the local restaurant's, and then I broke the news that I was leaving for Texas City that morning. I promised to phone the address where I would be living in Texas City, and dropped her off at her car a 9 a.m. after breakfast. Next month article I will start my racing career, 1949 to 1962 as a driver, 1953-1962

Larry “Cospo” Cospelich Photographer / Reporter

I've been around racing most of my 56 years of life and I've come to enjoy dirt racing more than any. It all started many years ago when my brother Fred Cospelich (Monkey) took me to my first dirt race. And something about it is like a drug. Once you get it in your system it is hard to get it out. Back in 1976 Monkey and a close friend, Buster, built a modified dirt car using a 1967 Chevelle frame and a 1977 Vaga. We raced tracks in Biloxi, Hattiesburg, and Angie Louisiana. Come Friday we would load the truck and have a ton of fun. Back during that time, it didn't cost a lot to run your car like it does today. Through these years I have met some good people. It's just something about a dirt racer, he would let you have the shirt off of his back so that you could compete against him. The past couple weekends I have followed some young friends of mine, who are in the sprint car series. They race along the southern states form Texas to Ocala Florida and up to the Tennessee foot hills, where north of that the race tracks are closed until April. These young friends of mine are the (Biloxi Bandit), Shane Morgan and Timmy Thrash, both are from here on the coast. These two guys work a normal 5 day a week job and race the rest of the time. Speed week starts in the middle of February where some racers of the mid-northern states who are frozen in come south to race. We had the famous NASCAR driver Tony Stewart who doing what he loves rather than what pays good joined us running his Sprint car the last two weeks. It's funny how all the money he's got and he is racing with us!! Well after all, we put our pants on the same way. Some folks like hunting, some like fishing, guess the thought of speed is what does it for me. Until next time, this is Cospo and keep it in the middle of the road. 34

Robin Paterson Photographer / Reporter I'm a fifty-one-yearold female who has never been around racing of any kind. Of course, I had heard of NASCAR, Daytona, and Talladega and I was familiar with the names of some of the famous race car drivers. I knew that racing was a sport that had a lot of fans who followed it faithfully. One day my boyfriend asked me if I had ever been to the races. He told me a lot about racing and how much he has enjoyed it over the years. Not long after that we decided to go to the Daytona International Speedway. I will never forget how exciting it was to see the speedway for the first time. Right outside the speedway vender trucks were set up with all kinds of things for the fans to buy to show support for their favorite drivers. One vender truck had headsets that you could rent for the race. The headset that we chose allowed us to be able to talk to each other over the noise, hear the race car drivers talking or hear the announcers. Several race cars were set up outside that you could stop and look at and you could even sit in the car and take pictures. I sat in the number 4, "Freaky Fast!" car that had actually been driven by Kevin Harvick. Sitting in that car made me feel pretty amazing and it sure made me want to crank it up and go for a ride. Well … maybe next time.

When we got up to our seats I was really impressed with how everything was set up. I could see the flag stand, the front straightaway and I had a pretty good view of the pits. There were several huge televisions and a tall monitor set up that would show which drivers were in first through fifteenth place and it would also show how many laps were left to go in each stage of the race. The closer it got to race time, more and more people filled the stands. I felt proud when, as far as I could see, everyone stood up for the National Anthem. The next thing I know the race cars are speeding around the oval shaped track. I had not chosen a particular driver to cheer for that day. I just enjoyed watching and learning how it all works. I ended up seeing two races that weekend and I am already planning to go back to Daytona again this summer for the race on July 7th. Also, since the Daytona races I have visited two dirt racing tracks, Southern Raceway in Milton FL and the Hattiesburg Speedway. I had no idea how much there is to learn about racing but I can say that I am on my way and enjoying the ride. …... Robin Patterson
