Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Now that Christmas and the New Year holidays are over some feel as if the pressure is off. But for the rest of us the pressure is just starting. Car Show season! Which one to go to? What cruise-in’s and benefits do I want to go to & how do I attend two or three events the same weekend? I attended two planning meetings in January. One was filled with planned events being presented by car club members & in the other meeting club members were openly talking about how they could work together and support each others events. “Large clubs could delegate some members to go to different events and give a report at the next club meeting.” Great idea! There are so many events & benefits now. All of them are important to the organizations that are putting them on. All are hoping for a big turn out. Money raised at these events is usually given away to a good cause. Car, truck & motorcycle clubs are known as a bighearted and very giving group of people. I encourage you to attend what you can & talk good about your experience and give what you can in the name of your club. If the only event you attend is the one your club puts on and you never show up at other events you are sending the wrong signal from your club. Some e-mail... Jimbo, With the holidays behind us I would like to share a personal experience with my family & friends about drinking and driving. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends. Well, three days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails, followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before .. I took a cab home! Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. This was a real relief and surprise because I had never driven a cab before. I don't even know where I got it and now that it's in my garage I don't know what to do with it!!! Sent in by JDCLARK@

The Magic Bank Account Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your private account for your use. However, this prize has rules. The set of rules: 1. Everything that you didn't spend during each day would be taken away from you. 2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account. 3. You may only spend it. 4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for that day. 5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, Game Over!". It can close the account and you will not receive a new one. What would you personally do? You would buy anything and everything you wanted right? Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don't know, because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew it would be replenished in the morning, right? Actually, this game is real ...Shocked ??? Yes! Each of us is already a winner of this *PRIZE*. We just can't seem to see it. The PRIZE is *TIME* 1. Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life. 2. And when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is not credited to us. 3. What we haven't used up that day is forever lost. 4. Yesterday is forever gone. 5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time without warning...So, what will you do with your 86,400 seconds? Those seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in dollars. Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think. So take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply and enjoy life! Here's wishing you a wonderful and beautiful day. Start spending.... FEBRUARY 2015

This is the story of two friends who were walking together on the edge of the beach. During some point of the journey, they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The friend, who got slapped, was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand, 'Today my best friend, slapped me in the face.' They kept on walking until they found a shallow wading pool which they decided to explore. The friend who had been slapped, got stuck in quicksand and started drowning, and naturally her friend saved her by pulling her out of the quicksand. After she recovered from the near drowning, she wrote on a stone, 'Today, my best friend saved my life.' The friend who had slapped and saved her best friend, asked “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now you write on a stone. Why?” With a knowing smile the friend replied, “When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where the winds of forgiveness can erase it, but when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone so no wind can ever erase it.” Learn to write your hurts in the sand and carve your blessings in stone. Till next month…

……. Hey! Check this out. True story! You’re probably not going to believe it, but there was this dude I know who always wanted to go skydiving. Now when his 40th birthday rolled around, he decided to take it off his bucket list. So he went to skydiving school and they taught him everything he needed to know to take his first jump. He soon found himself about 8,000ft in the air with all these other dudes. They all started to jump one after another, so he jumped. He went whistling down thru the air at over 100mph. It was the ultimate rush! The view was awesome. Now he noticed the other skydivers started to open their chutes, so he decided it was time to open his. But when he pulled on the cord, nothing happened. He wasn’t worried though, because he remembered there was a reserve chute. However, when he pulled on it, that one didn’t open either. Now he was worried! He was still whistling thru the air as the earth was rushing up to him. It was about this time he saw another dude coming up about as fast as this he was going down. When they got just about even with one another, he hollered, “Hey, you know anything about parachutes”? The other dude said, “no, but do you know anything about gas stoves”? They were ok. They both landed in somebody’s pond. Till next time---keep it hangin loose Cuz---justbecuz

Donnas' interest was in old cars and classics while in high school. Her parents gave her a 1964 1/2 Mustang for her 1st car. “I’ve always liked the old cars and hot rods, and the people who had them. Floyd, boyfriend then and husband now, shared the same interest. We’ve had lots of cars during our years together. Buy them, fix them up and drive them around till they find a new home. Each one has a special memory, and so do the people we meet along the way. When I retired from my daily job in 2000, I quickly filled my time with car club activities. I joined the Misfits in 2000 & joined the NSRA that same year. Misfits have activities that help out folks in my hometown area. I’ve worked as Activities Director and now as Vice President. The National Street Rod Association gave me the opportunity to meet people from all over the United States. My favorite NSRA show is the Street Rod Nationals® at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, (August 6-9 this year) Thousands of NSRA members fill the parking lots with every car you can imagine and you will never see them all. Inside the huge air conditioned building every kind of car/ truck/streetrod vendor has a display. You get a chance to meet the people who are sending you parts or making friends with new businesses. They even have a huge section where it’s all about the ladies.” Donna was selected Mississippi Street Rodder of the Year by the current NSRA members who sent in their written nominations to the Mississippi State Representative Thomas H. (CW) Smith. Donna has the honor of being the first female to be given the award and the jacket…

Congratulations Donna! You make a difference, Bill and your NSRA family & friends

The on track at “Cacklefest”.

Back in 1957, those happy days of a healthy economy, Sputnik and the Edsel, three young men from Parma, Ohio began construction of a drag car to compete in the NHRA competition coupe class. A year later, Neil Leffler, Lyn Leffler and John Loukas unveiled their new dragster at the airport drags in Akron, Ohio. They won this, their first event. The “White Coupe” was a rail dragster topped with a chopped and channeled Bantam body. The racer was powered by a 4-71 blown, Isky cammed, 324 ci Oldsmobile engine. As the coupe evolved it would ultimately receive a 392 Chrysler with 8 carbs running on 100% nitro. With Chrysler power, the coupe set a class world record 162.16 at Great Lakes Dragway, took Top Eliminator honors at the World Series of Drag Racing in Cordova, Illinois, received the “best engineered” award during a final round win over Chris Karamesines, and set another world record at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 173.95\ 9.03 second pass. The racers that assisted with parts, advice or both are the legendary names of drag racing: Red Greth, Ernie Hashim, Don Maynard, Marv Rifkchin, Phil Weiand, Dave Meal, Tom Hanna, Ed Iskendarian, Art Chrisman, Jack Chrisman, Mickey Thompson, and “Broadway” Bob Metzler. Last month I wrote about Chris Karamesines and his historic career as a drag racer, tuner, and builder. This month continues along this road to colorful and legendary participants in this golden and unique era of drag racing. In the summer of 1962, after several successful seasons with Neil Leffler, Loukas formed a team with Bob Priesing of Cleveland, Ohio. Based in Chicago and with help from the Engine Specialists Speed Shop of Karamesines & Maynard, the coupe’s wheelbase was lengthened from 84 to 120 inches and the Hemi’s displacement increased from 392 to 460 cubic inches. Entered as an AA Fuel Coupe, the car was campaigned for nearly a decade under the Engine Specialists banner. The days of the “Competition Coupe, Sedan and Modified Roadster” Class in drag racing drew to an end in the mid-60’s, and with it closed a chapter on one of the coolest type of racing vehicle to ever compete in drag racing. Only a handful of these were nitroburners like the Loukas-Preising AA/Fuel Coupe. John Loukas retired this car from competition after 1965 and it ultimately found its way to the Don Garlits “Museum of Drag Racing” in Ocala, Florida. It was displayed there for several years until Loukas got the itch to restore it and play with it some more. He has restored the race car to its present “show” condition. Whether you are a racing fan or not; whether you fancy a particular type or style of car, if you are a car guy or gal you likely appreciate speed. The pioneers in this era of racing embraced speed. They wore it as if it were clothing and as a badge of distinctive honor. It drove them to near insanity. It consumed their entire lives. Many lost limbs. Several were severely burned. Some were paralyzed. Many lost their lives. Yet racing continues today, safer and faster, because of these innovative pioneers. Racing continues…

Remember the Chevy Vega?

This is how they were shipped. Until the early 1960s, automobiles moved by rail were carried in boxcars. These were 50 feet long with double-wide doors. Inside was room for four full-sized sedans on a two-tier rack - two raised up off the floor on a steel rack and two others tucked in underneath them. This protected the cars during transport but wasn't very efficient, as the weight of four vehicles was far less than the maximum weight a boxcar that size could carry. When 85-foot and 89-foot flatcars came into service, it was possible to pack a total of fifteen automobiles in one car on tri-level auto racks. But it still didn't approach the maximum allowable weight for each flatcar. When Chevrolet started designing Vega during the late 1960s, one of the main objectives was to keep the cost of the car down around $2,000 in circa-1970 dollars. At the time, the freight charge for moving a loaded railroad car from the Lordstown, OH assembly plant to the Pacific coast - the longest distance cars produced at Lordstown would need to travel - was around $4,800. Since the Vega was a subcompact, it was possible to squeeze three more cars on a railroad car for a total of eighteen, instead of the usual fifteen. But that still worked out to around $300 per car - a substantial surcharge for a $2000 car. If only Chevrolet could get more Vegas on a railroad car, the cost per unit of hauling them would go down. The engineers at GM and Southern Pacific Railroad came up with a clever solution. Instead of loading the cars horizontally, the Vegas were to be placed vertically on a specially designed auto-rack called the Vert-A-Pac. Within the same volume of an 89-foot flatcar, the Vert-A-Pac system could hold as many as 30 automobiles instead of 18. Chevrolet's goal was to deliver Vegas topped with fluids and ready to drive to the dealership. In order to be able to travel nose-down without leaking fluids all over the railroad, Vega engineers had to design a special engine oil baffle to prevent oil from entering the No. 1 cylinder. Batteries had filler caps located high up on the rear edge of the case to prevent acid spilling, the carburetor float bowl had a special tube that drained gasoline into the vapor canister during shipment, and the windshield washer bottle stood at a 45 degree angle. Plastic spacers were wedged in beside the powertrain to prevent damage to engine and transmission mounts. The wedges were removed when cars were unloaded. The Vega was hugely popular when it was introduced in 1970, however it quickly earned a reputation for unreliability, rust and terrible engine durability. When the Vega was discontinued in 1977, the Vert-A-Pac cars had to be retired as they were too specialized to be used with anything else. The Vert-A-Pac racks were scrapped, and the underlying flatcars went on to other uses.

Edition 46 OK, it’s officially the off-season. No car shows going on, it’s cold, it’s rainy and it’s time for something to do inside. I have been thinking about starting a new hobby that I can piddle with during the winter. My grandfather Barfield was a whittler in his senior years. He was a clock maker and wood was his choice of medium. I remember the big bank clock in the tower of the local bank downtown. My grandfather was the only one allowed to touch it. Many of the pieces he made by hand. If it needed a part, my grandfather usually carved it. He whittled just about anything he needed around the house. As a little kid, I was amazed at his talent and craftsmanship. My grandfather died just before I started school so he has always remained big in my eyes. I never really had any interest in making anything out of wood, other than things I needed here or there for the house or a project, in other words… no desire for any finished product, until now. I’ve always liked canes and walking sticks, but mostly walking sticks. What’s the difference? A cane is about waist tall and normally has a curve at the top, where a walking stick is straight and taller, up to arm pit tall. I like the style of the walking sticks because of nature’s artistic designs, where canes are normally straight, walking sticks can have all nature’s twists and turns, bends and bows. I saw some walking sticks being sold at a car show and I thought… I can do that. We all need to walk for our health and it helps if you have a stick to walk with. Once I decided to build walking sticks from nature, I had to reverse engineer them. Figure out how to go into the woods, find what I’m looking for and then figure out how to go through all the many steps to make it happen. It sounded so simple as I ran it through my head. However, once I began the research, I saw that turning a stick out of the woods into something people would want to own is a lot of work and a whole lot of time and patience. I first concentrated on getting the material, finding the right sticks in the woods is a lot tougher than it sounds, especially since I don’t own any woods. Once you have the material, you have to focus on removing the bark and drying the stick. Removing the bark on a stick is easier said than done. The first one took about three evenings to get all the bark off. I tried various knives and finally settled on a carpet blade or utility blade. It did a better job, but still too slow. Back to the internet and more research, concentrating on bark removal. That’s when I discovered the draw knife. A draw knife is a knife that takes two hands to operate. A good friend said he had three and he’d let me borrow one. So I picked it up and brought it home and it worked awesome. Only one problem, the draw knife occupies both hands, with both hands occupied who holds the stick? More research…I remembered seeing some kind of bench in all the videos I watched, so I went back and found the bench. It’s called a shaving horse. There are videos on how to build one. So after watching five or six different videos, I decided on how I wanted to design and build my own version. The shaving horse has to clamp down to hold the stick, but you have to release the hold every few seconds as you’re stripping bark. You don’t want to unclamp some vice every ten seconds. You want to hold, shave, release, rotate, hold, shave, release and rotate, all very quickly. The shave horse does that with a foot petal. Here is my crude design, but it works.

) Now with the amount of work that goes in to each handmade walking stick, they should sell for about $100 each, right? It doesn’t work like that. This has to be a hobby you enjoy doing, if you are looking at the huge amount of time, processes and work that goes into making each stick, you’d be better off getting a job at McDonalds. It is amazing the time and effort that goes in to just one stick. Once you strip the bark off, you have to seal the ends with wax and let the drying process begin. The drying process is long. Then the sanding process, then the staining process, then

the finish process and then what I call the hardware process to get to the finished walking stick. As of this column I have not finished a single stick, but I have some in the works. The question is what will the finished product look like, will I let anyone see them, is this something I will get bored with and if I like them, will anyone else like them enough to want to buy one. So far I’m enjoying the process. I find whittling, as my grandfather called it, to be relaxing work. You can do some serious thinking while whittling. I have never had a job in my life where I worked with my hands, I have always had projects, had horses, built things I needed, kept up land and worked on things, but never a trade I worked with my hands. I do have a major tourist attraction on the Coast that wants to carry my sticks, sight unseen. Now it’s just a walking stick, not a moon lander…that’s what I keep telling myself, but we’ll see how it goes. Isn’t that the way of life, we’ll see how it goes. Oh, I auditioned for a play at CenterStage in Biloxi back in December and I won a part. This is my second play in community theatre and it is the first one I had to audition for. My first play was The Sunshine Boys last spring. I played the part of the patient. I only had about 25 words in the play to learn and I also learned that a speaking part in your first play was a rarity, I didn’t have to audition, a heavy weight in theatre knew it was on my bucket list and got me the part. It was a terrifying thing to do. I did nine mostly packed shows. That first night, I’ll have to tell you, my knees were a knocking! (Since I first got in radio at the age of 15, I was always terrified to speak in public. Put me behind the mic in a room by myself and I was fine, but put me out in public and I was terrified. I finally came to terms with it and made a vow to myself, it was something I had to overcome. I made the commitment to myself that I would speak in public anytime I got the chance or could manufacture the chance, as a way of overcoming it. I learned that public speaking is 90% preparation and 10% execution and you better enjoy the 10%). The audition process is kind of daunting, I’ve never acted except that one small part. You have to go up on stage in front of 25 or 30 actors and read a part you’ve never seen before and many actors there are reading the same part. It is intimidating to say the least, but I love the challenge! The play is called “Inherit The Wind”, it’s a fictionalized play based on reality. The Scopes Monkey Trial, as it was called, took place in 1925 in the small town of Dayton, TN. It was the state of Tennessee VS a substitute teacher accused of teaching evolution in school, which at the time was illegal in Tennessee. The real trial pitted the three time candidate for president of the United States, William Jennings Bryant, as the prosecutor for the state against famed defense attorney, Clarence Darrow, in a trial that brought national attention to this little town. It’s a fabulous play that includes dramatic courtroom drama and sometimes light hearted moments. I won the part of the bailiff, which takes me from 25 words in my first play to well over 100 words in this play and I have to carry off a

character part. For a guy that can’t remember what he had for breakfast this morning, the toughest part for me is memorizing all my lines. This part has me on stage a good bit of the play, but just two main spots where my character really comes out. Please pray for me! The first play I did was both terrifying and rewarding. The amount of work that goes into these productions and the talent you work with is amazing. I would have to say, it has to kind of be like boot camp in the work and the comradely that you experience with your fellow actors. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever tried to do and one of the most rewarding. We’re rehearsing in January and February many nights per week and the show will be March 5-15. Come see “Inherit The Wind” if you get a chance, I think you’ll like it and we all need a little more culture, lol. One way or another I’m just killing time to get back to car show season, playing music, building 50/50 jackpots, seeing cool cars and talking cars with car guys. This time of the year just drags on. I have been working on the Hot Rod Show trailer some. I found a product that works really well on what I call the truckers chrome on the trailer, plus I need to get another good coat of wax on the whole trailer. Right now, I’m closing the computer and going out for coffee. I hope you also survive hibernation. If you can get the Hot Rod out of the garage, do it, if you can’t maybe you can piddle with it, do some of the things you couldn’t do during the season or just sit there and look at it… or go outside and pick up a stick. Til next month…

WAKE UP America ! ! ! At what point do we stop giving away OUR RIGHTS ? We've gone so far the other way . . bent over backwards not to offend anyone.

Van T. Barfoot died Remember the guy who wouldn't take the flag pole down on his Virginia property a while back? You might remember the news story several months ago about a crotchety old man in Virginia who defied his local Homeowners Association, and refused to take down the flag pole on his property along with the large American flag he flew on it. Now we learn who that old man was. On June 15, 1919, Van T. Barfoot was born in Edinburg, Texas. That probably didn't make news back then. But twentyfive years later, on May 23, 1944, near Carano, Italy, that same Van T. Barfoot, who had in 1940 enlisted in the U.S. Army, set out alone to flank German machine gun positions from which gunfire was raining down on his fellow soldiers. His advance took him through a minefield but having done so, he proceeded to singlehandedly take out three enemy machine gun positions, returning with 17 prisoners of war. And if that weren't enough for a day's work, he later took on and destroyed three German tanks sent to retake the machine gun positions. That probably didn't make much news either, given the scope of the war, but it did earn Van T. Barfoot, who retired as a Colonel after also serving in Korea and Vietnam, a well deserved Congressional Medal of Honor. What did make news...Was his Neighborhood Association's quibble with how the 90-year-old veteran chose to fly the American flag outside his suburban Virginia home. Seems the HOA rules said it was OK to fly a flag on a house-mounted bracket, but, for decorum, items such as Barfoot's 21-foot flagpole were "unsuitable". Van Barfoot had been denied a permit for the pole, but erected it anyway and was facing court action unless he agreed to take it down. Then the HOA story made national TV, and the Neighborhood Association rethought its position and agreed to indulge this aging hero who dwelt among them. "In the time I have left", he said to the Associated Press, "I plan to continue to fly the American flag without interference." As well he should.

And if any of his neighbors had taken a notion to contest him further, they might have done well to read his Medal of Honor citation first. Seems it indicates Mr. Van Barfoot wasn't particularly good at backing down.

Van T. Barfoot's Medal of Honor citation: This 1944 Medal of Honor citation, listed with the National Medal of Honor Society, is for 2nd Lieutenant Van T. Barfoot, 157th Infantry, 45th Infantry:

A

bout two and a half years ago I was given an amazing opportunity to model for my first clothing company. I loved pinups and the pinup look, but it was never something I would have considered pursuing. Besides the fact that I had no knowledge of how to get into it or where to start, there is a huge rockabilly scene out west that is unfortunately far less popular in the state I currently reside in, Florida. However, I have managed to get quite a bit of exposure and network, giving me the chance to meet some truly extraordinary and wonderful people! One of those amazing people is the creator of another brand that I now model for, Dolly Dames BEAUtique. She was a new designer looking for models. As I got to know her better, I learned of her incredible story and resilience. I not only wanted to share some of her designs for those interested in getting the rockabilly or pinup look, but I wanted to share her inspirational story with others. Gina Hernandez is the creator behind Dolly Dames BEAUtique, a new line of handmade goodies that offers affordable pinup inspired designs for all shapes and sizes. She custom designs every exceptional item! From clothes to accessories, this inspirational Latina has a unique style! Candy Cocktail: Where did you get the name from: Dolly Dames BEAUtique? Dolly Dames BEAUtique: I was looking for a name that represents the strength of a woman. In the UK, Dame means the title given to a woman equivalent to the rank of a knight. Dolly comes from the idea, "what woman doesn't like to get all dolled up?" BEAUtique is spelled around the thought of BEAUtiful, which all women are.

CC: Now you have a special story because your life has been affected by your disability. Please tell us more and how you've overcome that? DDB: I don’t let my disability hold me back. In fact, my craft is what has helped me through my depression. If I stopped designing and crafting, I strongly believe I would fall back into depression. Besides that, I also have a strong support system; my fiancé wouldn’t let me quit even if I wanted to. She pushes me to be better, to create better and to be better than I was yesterday. She’s amazing. CC: What advice do you have for other women? DDB: We only get one shot at life. No matter our size or what we are facing, get up, get dolled up and most importantly, LOVE yourself first. CC: Where do you get your inspiration for your clothing designs from (Such as vintage stores, places you visit, celebrities, etc.)? DDB: I get my ideas from vintage clothing. The only difference is I take a design and add a modern twist to it. I also get ideas from watching what all you Dolls are wearing and posing in. I am frequently asked for advice on pinup modeling and getting that definitive look. In past issues of Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine I shared hair and makeup tips, so I thought it only fitting to share some fashion inspiration as well. Plus I just love an inspirational story! With shopping opportunities for the ladies and photos of lovely pinups with beautiful rides for the guys, you can view all of the Dolly Dames BEAUtique creations online. In the words of Gina Hernandez, you only get one shot at life, so get up, get dolled up and love yourself!

CC: How did you get into this? DDB: In February of 2012, I was hospitalized and placed in an induced coma. I had a tracheostomy done and I was connected to machines, fighting for my life. Doctors gave me very little chance at survival. About a month later I came out of that coma. After spending 2.5 months in the hospital, I was transported home to begin my recovery. Depression hit hard as I had to learn everything all over again; to walk, talk, move my arms. Everything was a struggle. I started crocheting to help with my depression and my hands. From crocheting, I started making hair bows. From hair bows to hair pieces with flowers, from hair accessories to summer tops. Creating turned into my safe place where depression faded. Then I created my Instagram to sell my tops and pieces. I received a message on Ig from a model asking me to be her stylist for her next pinup shoot. After that photoshoot I realized I definitely wanted to take this to another level. That’s when things started taking off and I became more inspired by the Pinup/rockabilly/rockabella look. CC: What type of products do you have? DDB: I custom make items that may not be listed on my sites. For the most part, I carry head wraps, bows, tops, clutches, earrings, floral pieces and now skirts. I also custom make pieces designed around a photo shoot (theme inspired). CC: What makes your creations unique? DDB: I try to make items that cater to all sizes, including plus size. Nothing frumpy either! LOL (laugh out loud) For example, if there is an item I made for a size 6; I would definitely make it for a size 22.

My name is Virginia, but everyone calls me GINA. I am 33 and reside in Moreno Valley, California. I am engaged to my #1 supporter and best friend. I have no kids but I do have a Shih Tzu, my baby, Prince Gizmo. When I started my BEAUtique I knew there were so many similar businesses. I keep it small in hopes to one day own my own shop. I want to stand out from the other shops. With that said, I try to take inspiration from pinup & rockabilly/rockabella. Then I add my twist on it. I add a bit of what's in now and maybe pull colors and styles

from the 80's. I try to showcase different patterns, mix & match. as you know, same patterns become repetitive. I want to create fun pieces; bold colored pieces that have you standing out in a crowd. I try creating many different styles, where it truly is one of a kind and you feel good knowing there aren’t a thousand other dolls wearing the same thing. I also knew I wanted to use my platform to empower other women to be positive and encourage the next woman, and so on. I have accomplished that and then some. I have met so many amazing women who have inspired me in so many ways. want to thank those who helped me in the beginning… and continue to support me. My first ever photoshoot for my designs was at Lordz of Customz. Thank you Jesse Castillo; you open your garage to anyone you can be of help to. It's like being around family. Luis Reyes, you definitely hold talent behind that camera; you capture beauty and rawness that we are lucky to see. Brianna Olivas: MAMAS your style inspired me to learn the pinup culture. You are an AMAZING young lady. You have a BEAUTY about yourself that shines from the inside out. Thank you.

I went to the NSRA meeting in Jackson along with 5 others from the club the 3rd of January. The meeting finished about noon and the women want to stop in Hattiesburg coming back so we didn’t stay in Jackson to eat lunch, instead we came back to Hattiesburg to eat. Now if you haven’t ate at the Farmer's Market you are missing some good food. If you are coming South on hwy 49, it is just pass the interstate on the right side up on the hill. (Before McDonald's) we had the lunch buffet, we got there to early for dinner buffet. The lunch buffet had brisket, BBQ ribs, fried chicken and fried catfish. For the vegetables, there were greens, mac and cheese, red beans and rice, green beans and coleslaw. I know there was more, just don’t remember all of them. Then there was the desert bar, cake, pie, pudding and 2 cobblers with ice cream all for $12. Now the weekend buffet has fried shrimp and fried oysters along with the fried catfish. Sometimes there will be boiled shrimp and all of the above sides to go along. With the three folks from the Misfits car club, we had 9 people that day and no one said anything about not liking the food. I have eaten there several times and never had a bad meal. Give them a try next time you go North through Hattiesburg. Till we eat again. J. R.

Grandparents........ 1. She was in the bathroom putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.... 2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?" 3. After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?" 4. A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!" 5. My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied. 6. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read." 7. I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!"

FEBRUARY 2015

In 1948-49 I’m racing at Playland Park in Galveston, Texas. Short ¼ mile, dirt, not much of a bank (maybe 5 ft.) in the corners, but the money, was real good! Everybody came to Playland for fun and spend money, so going to the races was a big fun deal. In addition, on the same grounds (park grounds) I remember getting hustled by my regular date, (Wilma) to go see Lefty Frizzel the big time country singer. I’m not “into ” country music, but if that what the lady wants, that's what we do ! This reminds me of the original poster at my neighborhood bar “Harold & Lillian’s”. The poster is dated 1953 at Nashville, and the date is 1/1/53. The show is from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Ryman Auditorium. Cost was $2.00 per person, show had the following in 1953. Hank Williams Sr. – Patsy Cline – Loretta Lynn, Marty Robbins, Johnny Horton, Hank Thompson. How’s that for a show for $2.00 admission? In case you Nascar guys didn’t know it, Marty Robbins was a good race car driver, lots of top 10 finishes but no top 5’s that I know of. Lefty sang at the Playland Park Auditorium and was very popular! In my opinion, it gave him his first start! Meanwhile, lets get back to 1950’s, Southern Calif. was loaded with race tracks. My favorite was Culver City, I just couldn’t make any mistakes there, I stayed out of trouble, and made good money for those days. Admission for the 30 lap program was $1.25 per person, 100 laps was $2.50 per person. In case you didn’t read Dec. & Jan. I’m dating a “Darlin Child” whose name was Riemy. Her family (ancestors) came from Germany to the U.S. in the 1920’s after WWI. I met the father one evening and as we shook hands I said guten abend and his face lit up as he said auf duetch? I said no. That disappointed him, but I was immediately accepted! So by now I’m ready to give our relationship (Riemy) a last try, so out we go to the Trianon Ball Room, Los Angeles, and when we get to the door I hand the “greeter” two admission tickets (a nice gift from Jim Craven of Firestone). He smiles and leads us to a table one row back of the dance floor! The waiter comes up to the table and says “you have a complementary bottle of champagne coming on behalf of Mr. Cravens, what brand would you prefer? I smiled and told him, we don’t drink, but large cokes would be nice, and even tho we didn’t drink, I do know how to tip OK? He smiled and nodded OK and left to return shortly. We had a great night, Harry James was playing, and Riemy and I were dancing, like we had Velcro on our fronts! I know Johnny Mantz had tipped off Jim Cravens, because Johnny & Chuck Stevenson were testing tires for Firestone, and Mr. Cravens was a V.P of that organization. Johnny and I were working on a deal to handle the McCollough Superchargers in Mexico, at the Chevy Plant in Mexico, for the 4 cylinder chevy II. It never came to pass, too much politics, and too much distance from the US plant to the Mexico location. Mean while Riemy and I are driving up Firestone Blvd, headed for the “Clock” drive-in where she worked. She leaned over, put her head on my shoulder, and said, “why don’t we rent an apartment together? Up until now, I had been restricted to above the “belt line”. I’m totally surprised but very leery of what that

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

could lead to! I pull over to the curb, look her straight in the eye, and say “I’ll rent one, but you can have it as yours, but no strings OK? Well, she sure didn’t like that, but she moved over, more closer, and said lets get a motel for the night, and we can talk it over in the morning! We spend a very torrid nite at the motel and she insisted on going home at 4:00 a.m. before her folks woke up. I went back to the room I shared with Willie Wildhaber and slept from 5 to noon. I was very tried, but that happens when you go out dancing and everything right? When I called the next day she was really nice, but very busy and goodby! By: Rusty I remember a story about a game warden named Mike Bradshaw, who passed away back in January of 2009. He had collected enough on-thejob stories to write a book. One such tale involved a call from an angry rancher. “Seems the rancher and his 8-year-old grandson had driven onto their stock tank dam, and they saw a trespasser who had rowed their aluminum fishing boat out to the middle of the 10-acre tank.” The rancher yelled for the man to paddle to shore, but the trespasser ignored him. The rancher finally resorted to cussing and threatening, but the man in the boat refused to comply. When Bradshaw arrived on the scene, he understood why. The “man” in the boat was a dummy — a practical joke concocted by the rancher’s grown son. The rancher’s eyesight wasn’t what it used to be. The son told me later, “Dad got madder than an old wet hen. I had to stay away from him for a few days until he cooled down.”

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, 'Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied, 'Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?' An elderly woman died last month. Having never married, she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, 'They wouldn't take me out while I was alive, I don't want them to take me out when I'm dead.' Two boys were walking home from Sunday school after hearing a strong preaching on the devil. One said to the other, 'What do you think about all this Satan stuff?' The other boy replied, 'Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out..It's probably just your Dad.'

You may see our athletically-fit cover model in that white tunic dress thinking “Hey, I know that girl! Aphrodite? Athena the Olympian? Could it be Atalanta, the competitive greek warrior goddess?” Actually, our cover & centerfold model (page 36) is Brittany Taylor, whose award-winning physique puts mere greek goddesses to shame. She won the Overall Bikini Championship at the Junior Nationals in Chicago, earning her pro-card (that means you have to pay her if you see her on the beach). Just a month later, she also came in 1st place in her 2nd pro show, in St. Louis. That qualified her to compete in the Olympia contest – bodybuilding's largest & most prestigious event, now in its 51st year. Brittany is Mississippi's first athlete to compete at The Olympia. www.brittanytaylor.com/ And Brittany's appearance here in the February issue is appropriately timed since it was a Greek Goddess that started Valentine's Day. The short version is that Aphrodite's son, Eros, the god of romantic love, was dispatched by Aphrodite to seduce Psyche, whose beauty rivaled Aphrodite. But instead, Eros became seduced by Psyche, probably when she pulled off that short white dress & put on the bikini, like Brittany did here, & kidnapped her, taking her away to his castle. (That wouldn't have happened with Brittany. She has more muscle than any Eros I've ever met. But play along...) Eventually, Psyche figures out who Eros really is, & he freaks out, running away, the little wuss that he is, like some freakish punk rock star that weighs 85 pounds wet & yet the supermodels drool over him – weird. But anyway, like the supermodels, Psyche, decides she just has to have the guy because of his cool Challenger Shaker Hood & she eventually appeals to Aphrodite & her hubby Bubba, known back then as Zeus, who then brings Psyche & Eros together. Oh, & the Roman name for Eros is Cupid, who had wings & shot arrows to create desire. Using this lame story as their excuse, for 800 years the Romans celebrated a “carnal love feast” on February 15th, but the Catholics eventually got around to changing the holiday, no hurry stopping that kind of fun, I guess, naming it after St. Valentine, who just happened to be the Founder of Halmark Cards. So that's how we get Valentine's Day. End of story & most of it true, as true as greek mythology can get anyway. The real story is...what were those greek writers smoking back then? Be sure to catch Brittany at her Bikini Posing Clinic on 2/21/2015 at Iron Works Gym in Biloxi & see our very own Jimbo finally learn how to do it. Brittany can conduct seminars at your gym too. And she is available for weight training & custom nutrition planning. Better yet, how about having your logo or company slogan printed on Miss Dependable Brittany's World-Class-Pectoralis or 1st-Place-Quadriceps while she appears at a car show, like “Burnin the Beach” at Ft. Walton May 2nd ? We could do a poster of her with your product, & she'd sign it at the show? Little Eros's everywhere would hang it on the wall of their room, with Daddy Zeus seeing it every night. She & your logo would appear in thousands of “selfies” on Facebook pages, everywhere. She'd pose with the cool hot rods there. You'd be a Zeus! Would you like to have knock-out, gorgeous, fun, model at your show or event? Several models love doing it, they're proven showmagnets. Or, have your logo professionally airbrushed on to a model appearing at the shows. She & your logo will appear in thousands of cellphone-camera images. She'll be photographed by everyone & your logo will be front & center. We can also do a poster of one of the models, with your logos. She can do a postersigning at your business or give them out at shows. Contact: Jimbo@dixiepress.com

The purple Nova The purple Nova ( which was originally red) is a 1974 purchased new by Vivian Marcev on November 20,1973 for $2700. The car was passed down to her son, Ernie Marcev in 1989. He put a shifter in and wheels on it but that was about it. He then passed it down to his son Mark Marcev Sr. In 1991 Who still owns it today. Mark painted it purple, changed the motor, changed the transmission, did new upholstery, put in a new dash board and electrical system. He basically did a complete overhaul and later added the ghost flames to the paint job. Mark's nephew Ricky Malbrough did the paint job and his cousin Ivy Trosclair, owner of Metry Collision and Metry Custom Cycles did the ghost flames. Airbrush on the interior that was done by Roy Lapish and skull graphics on the trunk was done by Kenny Hymel Sr. The engine is a supercharged Chevy 350. It has a power glide transmission and new powder coated front and rear suspension, wheelie bars and a parachute on the back give it the real "race car" effect. The interior and trunk is black velour done by Calamari's Trim Shop in New Orleans. The trunk contains a custom painted purple battery box and nitrous bottle with ghost flames to match the car itself. The car has a 1972 Nova fiberglass rear bumper, headers with dual exhausts and custom cut outs done by Terry's Muffler Shop in Metairie. The best part about this car is that it will soon be passed along again to Mark Marcev jr., a fourth generation owner, who was born on November 20, 1998, 25 years to the date it was purchased by his great grandmother Vivian. Vivian was a very superstitious lady so it's really amazing that she un-knowingly purchase him a birthday present 25 years before he was born.

June 15, is Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Day 2015 Ride your motorcycle or scooter on this day to demonstrate: * The number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians. * That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life. * That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities. * That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation. * That motorcycling is a social good. Ride to Work Day was inspired by "Work to Ride - Ride to Work'" marketing materials created between 1989 and 1991 by the Aero Design and Manufacturing Company, a Minnesota based manufacturer of motorcycle riders clothing. In 1992 these items inspired motorcycle magazine editor Fred Rau to write an editorial calling for a national ride to work day. The first annual Ride to Work Day event was proposed in Road Rider magazine (now titled Motorcycle Consumer News) in the May 1992 issue. This is an excerpt from that "Ride to Work" editorial: "You may remember several months ago when Bob Carpenter, commenting in his 'Two Up' column, mentioned how neat he thought it would be if there was one day a year when everyone who owned a motorcycle used it to ride to work. That comment was prompted by a T-shirt produced by Aerostich RiderWear that simply said, 'Work To Ride, Ride To Work.' Everyone seemed to think that a national 'Ride To Work' day was one heck of a good idea." The first Ride to Work Day event date was July 22nd, 1992. For several years various motorcycle businesses informally promoted every third Wednesday in July as Ride To Work Day. These early advocates included Road Rider Magazine, Dunlop Tires, and Aerostich/ Riderwearhouse. The event continued to grow as an informal grass roots demonstration every year until 2000. That year a non-profit organization, Ride to Work was formed to help organize and promote Ride to Work Day. The first Ride to Work Day event led by this group was the third Wednesday in July of 2001. This day was the annual day until 2008, when it was changed to the Third Monday In June. This change was made to climatically better accommodate riders world-wide, and to give more riders an opportunity to participate.

While being only 1 of two great rallies still held at Big Creek Park on beautiful Lake Somerville, it hosts many new elements in the rally world and includes the carts and bikes as one. Bike games for the bikers and Cart races add a new twist. We are pretty sure all our hard core bikers bro and sisters are pulling for a good ol’ fashion cart crash but hey it's a party for all and let the truth be known for all you nay sayers we won't go to a rally with carts good luck finding one!
