Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Here we are at the start of a new year. Hard to believe MotorSports Magazine is starting it’s twentieth year. In the beginning we were just a newsletter, put together like a scrap book. We collected information, and took photos from the few active clubs here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This was before Cruisin’ the Coast® started, and the car scene wasn’t what it is today. There was only one cruise-in each Saturday night and the different car clubs took turns putting it on. Singing River Street Rods put on the best outside show/party at some of the Hwy 90 motels that are long gone thanks to the storms and progress new business bring. There was one big show, it was at the Biloxi coliseum. (Autorama) Each club had their own area and filled them with club cars as well as invited cars/trucks/motorcycles. Then all the clubs shared the outcome. Together! It was clubs working together. Lot of changes have taken place over those twenty years. More clubs, more events, more cruise-in’s to choose from and the Gulf Coast car scene is growing every month. I like inspirational reading and lectures. There is something about listening to someone who can lift your spirit and give you the “you can do it” attitude in your time of doubt. So when I read the following quote, "I realize now one of the main things our parents and grandparents gave us for Christmas was memories." by Joel Osteen, I wondered how I might relate to my readers. . My outlook changes each day thanks to the car/truck/motorcycle people that pass through my life. Young or old, you fill my memories with some of the best of times. Good times, bad times and sad times but all shared thru the camaraderie of interaction with one another. MotorSports has grown from a few hundred copies a month to thousands of copies a month. Subscribers from every state know about the events taking place here. Retirees are planning their trips thru our area and some are even moving here to take advantage of all the Gulf Coast has to offer. At my age twenty more years seem unrealistic, but I’m going to give it one hell of a shot! Till next month…

There was nothing in particular that I needed at the world's largest retailer; but, since I retired, trips to Wally World to look at the "Walmartians" is always good for some comic release. Besides I always feel pretty normal after seeing some of the people that frequent this establishment. But, I digress...enough of my psychological fixations. While standing in line to check out, the guy in front of me, probably in his early thirties, asked, "Are you a Vietnam Vet?" "No," I replied. "Then why are you wearing that cap?" "Because I couldn't find the one from the War of 1812." I thought this was a snappy retort. "The War of 1812, huh?" the "Walmartian" queried, "When was that?" God forgive me, but I couldn't pass up such an opportunity. "1936," I answered, as straight-faced as possible. He pondered my response for a moment and then asked, "Why do they call it the War of 1812 if it was in 1936?" "It was a Black Operation. No one is supposed to know about it." This was beginning to be way too much fun! "Dude! Really?" he exclaimed. "How did you get to do something that COOOOL?" I glanced furtively around me for effect, leaned toward the guy, and in a low voice said. "I'm not sure. I was the only Caucasian on the mission." "Dude," he was really getting excited about what he was hearing, "that is seriously awesome! But, didn't you kind of stand out?" "Not really. The other guys were all wearing white camouflage." The moron nodded knowingly. "Listen man," I said in a very serious tone, "You can't tell anyone about this. It's still 'top secret' and I shouldn't have said anything." "Oh yeah?" he gave me that, 'don't threaten me look.' "Like, what's gonna happen if I do?" With a really hard look I said, "You have a family don't you? We wouldn't want anything to happen to them, would we?" The guy gulped, left his basket where it was and fled through the door. By this time the lady behind me was about to have a heart attack, she was laughing so hard. I just grinned at her. After checking out and going to the parking lot I saw the Dimwit leaning in a car window talking to a young woman. Upon catching sight of me he started pointing excitedly in my direction. Giving him another 'deadly' serious look, I made the 'I see you' gesture. He turned kind of pale, jumped into the car and sped out of the parking lot in a flurry of dust. What a great time I had! Tomorrow I'm going back with my Homeland Security cap. Then the next day I will go to the DMV so I can wear a Border Patrol hat, and see how long it takes to empty out the place. Whoever said retirement is boring, just needs the right kind of cap! ….. GptTeeByrd@

WAKE UP America ! ! ! At what point do we stop giving away OUR RIGHTS ? We've gone so far the other way . . bent over backwards not to offend anyone. I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it was, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table, everywhere! Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. And others birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore.. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio. Soon, the back yard was like it used to be ....... quiet, serene.... and no one demanding their rights to a free meal. Now let's see...... Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care and free education, and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; Your child's second grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English. Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to 'press one' to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than ”ours” are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties. Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder.
People born in the 50’s have lived in seven decades, two centuries, and two millenniums. We had the best music, fastest cars, drive-in theaters, soda fountains, and happy days. And we are not even that old yet.
We’re just that cool.
While attending the Open House at Don Schumacher Racing this year, I was fascinated by all of the vintage race cars being shown there. The “Bronson Special” was featured previously. Here is another history story. The Loukas and Preising AA/Fuel Coupe caught my eye, especially the Chris Karamesines name as engine tuner on the cowl. I knew this Bantam bodied fuel coupe once claimed to be the “World’s Fastest Coupe” somewhere around 1962 with a record at 9.03 at 173.96 mph. Through investigation I learned that this was in fact that car, and prior to its retirement in 1971 it was turning 7.40’s at close to 190 mph. The Greek, however, never drove this car in competition. This was a truly famous vehicle in its heyday. It’s hard not to fall in love with the looks of this car. This led me to thinking about what a character Chris Karamesines was back in the 60’s when I met him. He was unofficially breaking records at 200 mph. Holy Cow!
Chizler making a 204 mph run1960.
the Loukas-Preisling dragster at Don Schumaker Racing.
He drove a 7000 hp monster this summer at 300 mph plus when he was 82! He turned 83 in November 2014. That’s been 62 years since “The Golden Greek” fired up his 1936 Ford Phaeton and won his first drag race in 1952. In all those years he has won “0” titles, but in 2001 was named number 30 on the NHRA’s Greatest Drivers list. He was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1997 and was in the Class of 2006 for the NHRA Hall of Fame.
Karamesines was soft spoken but always had time for the crowd. He had great showmanship and a winning personality. He would say things like: “I went so fast that time my mustache almost caught fire!” The fans listened and did not forget. T h e Grand American Series was sort of like the barnstorming days of the 20’s and 30’s, bringing major league drag racing to smaller venues. Few of the participants had the personal magnetism of Karamesines. The “Greek” was elevated to mythical standards as his fire-belching burnouts and tire-smoking runs had the fans cheering for more. They also were impressed that he and his “Greek Fleet” worked on the cars late into the night in hotel parking lots. (Paid 8 man crews, tractor/trailer rigs, and seven figure sponsorships would be 40 years into the future.) The occasional ventures into NHRA national event competition brought a

largely unknown driver in front of younger fans. When observant PA announcers began to speak of his advancing years and colorful history, Karamesines attracted a new generation of supporters. He would have a couple of hundred fans standing inches from him as he adjusted the valves or packed his parachutes. Not surprisingly, when you polled the spectators as to whom they were rooting for, more than half would respond with the “Greeks” name. Other than a handful of supportive aftermarket manufacturers, Chris Karamesines never had a major sponsor, and as the costs of competition escalated his on-track fortunes waned. He has remained a crowd favorite because he has stood for the independent racer always intent on pleasing the fans and performing up to his own high standards. In his own words: “You’ve got to want to do it to keep doing it. And we’re in pretty good shape. I just keep working. I work every day on race cars and stuff I need to go down the road. I ride stationary bikes. That’s enough exercise. I also haven’t missed a year, and that makes a difference. If you’re out of it for 10 years or something, that might change your way of thinking.” Chris Karamesines’ name does not dominate the record books. He has never been a season titlist. His place in drag racing’s history is assured, however. A decade from now, when few remember today’s champion, they’ll remember “The Greek”. He will be remembered not only for what he brought to drag racing, but this ageless wonder may still be pulling to the starting line in a Top Fuel dragster. Why not? He is only in his early 80’s.

Thank you “Greek” for your contribution to history and to our memories.

By: Rusty Now, here in Texas, we all do not approve of your so-called Connecticut Yankee peddlers. So when one appeared in the yard of my tavern, I was not of a mind to give him room for the night. He was a scrawny fellow with a mop of white hair and a withered face. He did not seem like a crafty Yankee peddler. He looked more like a grandfather on his last legs. Surely this Connecticut Yankee had no harm in him! Curiosity being my downfall, as my wife would be the first to tell you, I was keen to see a real Yankee trick. So I told him that he might have lodgings for the night if he would play a Yankee trick before he left. Well, he promised me the trick, but said he was tired and went directly to bed. The next morning, everything went wrong. My yard boy never showed up. I was forced to care for the horses myself while my wife cooked breakfast. When I finally got inside, my wife was leaning over a table full of the peddler's wares. She was fingering a coverlet which matched the ones we had upstairs. The peddler named a ridiculously low price and my wife nodded eagerly. Just then one of our other customers called me to his table to pay his bill, so I did not see the peddler finalize the sale. It was only after the peddler had called for his buggy, paid for his room, and begun to drive away that I suddenly remembered his promise. "Peddler!" I called. "What about the Yankee trick your promised? I did not see any trick!" "You will," he said, whipping up his horse. Just then, my wife stuck her head out from one of the rooms upstairs. "Harry!" she cried. "That sneaky Yankee just sold me the cover from off his bed!" retold by S.E. Schlosser
In last month's Hot Coffee I said we would go to the Iron Skillet. I was close, the name of the restaurant is called the Cast Iron Café. There was 15 from the Coast Cruziers that showed up to eat. We had a great time and the food was great, several of us had the seafood combo, which was fried catfish and fried shrimp with hush puppies and another side. The fish and shrimp was great. It wasn't over cook and was moist. One person had baked pork chops (2) that had a maple glaze over the top and it sure looked good. A couple had steaks and bragged on them. The place has sandwiches also. The café is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has a daily special for lunch. It is one of the few places that you can still get good home style cooking. Their address is 7350 Hwy 57 Phone 228-215-3360. The Cast Iron Café also has a banquet room you can reserve for large parties. Call Penny to make reservations for the room. Tell them you saw it in the MotorSports Magazine. Till we eat again. J. R.

The Holiday Car Show & Toy Drive at the Best Western Plus Seaway Inn on Hwy 49, Gulfport, MS. was a success. Boxes of toys for the Toys-for-Tots were filled, donated caned goods for Feed My Sheep were put in boxes for delivery, and $200 in donations went to the Hope Haven Children’s Services.
Toys for Tots began as a Los Angeles charitable effort in 1947. Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, was inspired by his wife Diane when she tried to donate a homemade Raggedy Ann doll to a needy child but could find no organization to do so. At her suggestion, he gathered a group of local Marine reservists, including Lieutenant Colonel John Hampton, who coordinated and collected some 5,000 toys for local children that year from collection bins placed outside of Warner Bros. movie theaters. Their efforts were so successful that, in 1948, Toys for Tots was launched as a national campaign. Hendricks used his position as director of Public Relations for Warner Brothers Studio to enlist celebrity support, as well as have Walt Disney Studios design the red toy train logo . Until 1979, Marine reservists (frequently in their dress blue uniforms) and volunteers would collect and refurbish used toys. In 1980, only new toys were accepted, as reservists were no longer able to dedicate drill hours to refurbish toys, as well as legal concerns and the mixed message of giving hand-me-downs as a message of hope. In 1991, the Secretary of Defense authorized the creation and affiliation with the non-profit charity foundation. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. Noting in 1996 that many communities did not have a Marine reservist presence, the commander of the Marine Forces Reserve authorized Marine Corps League detachments and other local organizations to fill the gaps in toy collection and distribution. In 2009, the program received support from First Lady Michelle Obama, who placed the first collection box at the White House. In December 2011, she took part in a Toys for Tots activity at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed more than 469 million toys. Everyone at the Car show were happy to see the U.S. Marine’s arrive and grateful for their service to our country and local communities. Registered participants voted for their favorite vehicle at the free entry car show. Top ten awards were handed out to the winners.

By: Terry Mason Barfield Edition 45 2014 is gone. Where did it go, it was over in a whirlwind. It seems the older I get the faster time goes…I want it to slow down a little bit. I’m at the age where I want to smell the roses a little bit and I can’t get them to slow down enough for me to grab a rose to be able to smell it. I remember how long it took to get to the age of 16, when I could drive, how long it took to get to 21, to officially become a man, an adult. Since then… someone has been cranking up the speed on me and I can’t figure out who it is and how to get them to slow it down. A lot of you know I work for the SuperTalk MS Radio Network. It’s new to South MS, but been around the state for over 15 years. 11 FM stations make up the network and it is heard statewide. Here in South MS at 103.1 FM. Well, part of that speedup in life is, I was promoted to Sales Manager. So the money goes up a little, but the pressure and responsibility goes up a lot. SuperTalk MS is an awesome company though, very family oriented, which is hard to find this day and time. It’s News, Talk and Sports format, much like WWL Radio out of New Orleans, but MS based hosts and subject matter. If you are a conservative, like a little politics, the happenings going on around our state and you like SEC sports…I think you will like it. Try it and let me know what you think about it. It normally takes about a week to get hooked on it. My health has been good this month, thanks for all the folks that asked about it and even the ones that kidded me in good humor about my kidney stone. I’m just glad that is behind me and I hope it stays behind me. My wife, Scotty and I have continued to exercise and we do feel better because of it. Even the old body seems to work better because of the exercising. I have friends and family that tell me, oh, I get plenty of exercise…and then tell me their story. I will tell you what the doctor told me…unless you’re getting your heart rate above 100 and holding it there for 30 minutes at least three times a week, you’re not exercising. Doctors seem to be good at getting though our rationalizations. I still would rather be sitting on the sofa eating Twinkies and watching TV. My brother went to Turkey Run in Daytona Beach and sold his 31 Plymouth and bought a 31 Chrysler…but I’m going to let him tell you about it. This should be fun… The keyboard is not my friend and I’m not good at this kind of thing, but if you know Terry, he is not good at taking NO for an answer. He did promise to correct my spelling and grammar. We went to the Turkey Run in Daytona Beach at the Daytona International Speedway. Last year, Terry also went and there was over 4,000 cars inside the in-field of the track. This year, there were over 6,500 cars, 5,062 show cars plus another 1500 cars for sale in the car corral. Cars parked everywhere they could get them parked. While we were driving into the Turkey Run on Thanksgiving Day, a car pulled up beside us and started asking me about my 31 Plymouth, didn’t think a whole lot about it, we’ve had signs on it and had it for sale for about six months with nibbles here and there. Well, this guy was serious and we struck a deal. I wasn’t going to take an out of state check from someone I never had seen before, so we settled on a wire transfer to my bank. Well, that became a problem because the guy’s bank wouldn’t do a transfer without the guy having a signed deal at the bank giving them permission to do a wire transfer on his behalf. The guy ended up telling me before this deal was over there would have to be a certain amount of trust involved in the deal and he was right…he actually left with the car

before my bank told me the money had made it there and into my account. Now we are stuck in Daytona Beach on a Friday afternoon without a car. So the next morning (Saturday), we rented a car to drive home, home is Dothan, Alabama. Now what I haven’t told you is 31 Plymouth that I had bought a car about six months earlier…well, I had bought it on payments, well, deposit payments. I had found a 31 Chrysler that I really liked, I told the guy I wanted to buy it, but I needed to sell my 31 Plymouth first and here’s what I could do. I told the guy that I would give him $400 now and send him $100 a week to hold the car for me until mine sold, but that I wanted the payments to go toward the price of the car. If something happened, he had the car and the money. The guy agreed. So after driving back from Daytona on Saturday, Sunday morning I drove to Richland, MS to pick up the 31 Chrysler. The guy had it ready and he also showed me an envelope with $2,800 cash in it. He said I cashed each of your checks and I was holding the money for you, in case something happened. You meet the nicest folks messing around with classic cars. Now, some of my friends couldn’t believe that I was selling a 31 Plymouth and buying a 31 Chrysler. You have to understand, while the 31 Plymouth is a nice car…the 31 Chrysler is a luxury car in looks and ride and I really like the car.
Well, I hope I didn’t mess up Terry’s 17 FOREVER column too bad here, but writing this stuff down is stressful and I’m sure nuff glad I’m finished with it and we’ll see you down the road. Ken Barfield Not bad for a guy that drives a 31 Chrysler. Get whatever classic you drive out on the road and enjoy that 17 FOREVER frame of mind…after all, that clock is ticking faster and faster and we’re not getting any younger! Til next month…

If you remember in the December issue (page 14) it was 1950 or 51 and I’m rooming with Willie Wildhaber who is driving the team car with me, for owner Joe Lucy. In case you didn’t read the article, I was in the “Clock” Drive-In If in Huntington Park, Calif. and this “Darlin Child” name of Riemy was a car hop and had a dead battery in her Dads car and asked me to help. Well, we had a great time that night, after I removed the battery from her Dads 49 Ford and took it up to the station to be charged. A couple of readers at one of my favorite bars commented “why didn’t you just jump start it?” For the record readers, it would have taken 5 minutes to “jump start” the car and she would have the opportunity to say “thanks a lot” and drive away. When we parted that night (after spending 2 hours in Romano’s parking lot) she made it known to me that next time we should go to the races and leave her Dads car at home!) Friday nite at the “Clock” when I pulled in about 12:30 a.m. after running at San Bernardino. (known as Berdoo). She had on her “Clock” working blouse, short skirt, and white moccasins. Now that blouse certainly didn’t do her “38’s” justice, but I didn’t really mind, the “D” cup was still fresh in my mind from Wednesday nite “dead battery” episode. She came over with a big smile and I said “Culver City” is tomorrow nite, can you get off?” Now if the “Darlin Child” says “yes” the first step for a “memorable relationship” is completed! “One of my friends will work for me, and I’ll work for her, when she wants”. She said this softly, (for “good jobs” were hard to come by in the early 1950’s). I ordered up a burger, fries and a coke. She bought them over and as she hooked the tray on my door she asked “what time will you be picking me up? How early do you go to the track? “Write down your address and phone# and I’ll call you about 3:30 for directions and plan on 4:00 p.m.” I replied. At this time I was really interested in her, she was great looking, had the figure that kings started wars over! When I picked her up at 4:00 p.m. that next afternoon and she came running out to the car, from sitting on the porch. I took one look at her and I knew it was going to be a great night. When I helped her with her battery problem, she had on a tight white sweater, blue pleated short skirt, and white boots. This time she had on a white button down the front blouse, with white on white stripes, and a brown suede jacket that also buttoned on the front! The skirt was a mini skirt, not pleated and white boots with fringes on the back seam! Wow! Was I Impressed. We get to the track, I park out front in the lot, get a stand pass at the pit gate for her, (in those days no women were allowed in the pits during the program) old fashion, and insurance. Joe Lucy, (my car owner) was there with both the 4 car and 9 car. Willie hadn’t showed up yet, but he was always on time, and very tough to beat on the track. I was 3 quick out of 38 cars and outside front row for the trophy dash. Fast time qualifying paid $25.00. My big brother was working at “Ma Bell” (the phone company) making $1.30 an hour! That’s $10.40 a day folks. Anyway they drop the flag, and Jack beats me into the corner, wins the 4 lap dash and I wined up 2nd. Jack Jordan got $15.00 for winning the 4 lap trophy dash and I got $10.00 for 2nd. “They didn’t pay

for 3rd or 4th. In those days fastest cars started in the rear, not like todays “parades” in NASCAR. I started 12th in the 18 car main event, wound up 6th at the finish of 30 laps. Joe went to the window and brought me $35.00 (50% of my winnings). Willie finished 4th so Joe had a good nite, on top of our Friday nite at Berdoo. Jack Jordan in the #8 car, finished #2 in points in that year and got killed the next year. He was #8 in 1952. That’s the “Jack” who beat me into the corner in the dash. The other photo is Jack in the center of the 4 cars driving the #8 as mentioned. In those days no one wore driver’s uniforms. They came out in 1955 or maybe 1954, and were called “fire resistant”. They were heavy cloth treated with some chemical, and were not fireproof. My racing attire consisted of “logger boots” (what I wore in Oregon in logging camp during the summers when school was out). “Frisco Jeans” black, “T-Shirt White”, Air Force brown leather jacket, and a leather face mask with rubber cut from inner tubes about 3 layers to handle the rocks and dirt clods. Riemy came down out of the stands, smiling and came up to me, slipped her arm around my waist and said “they didn’t tell me you were that good”. I looked at her and said “maybe I was showing off a little”. She whispered in my ear, “I guess I better do a little “showing off” when we get to your place”. As previous readers know, Willie Wildhaler and I roomed together, (in case your not up to date, I drove the #4 and Willie the #9 for Joe Lucy). Willie won the UARA midget championship 1957 or 8. I went over to him and said “I won’t be at the apt tonite”. “That will be two of us, because I’ll be at “Margie’s” house tonite”. After the race is another story, and next month the “showing off” Riemy segment will be included. Willie is pictured here in the car at Joilet, IL in 1958, behind the wheel of the famous Frank Pavese V8-60, a former Edelbrock car that gave the Offies a sound thrashing. He came back to Missouri in 1961 and took a race at the fairgrounds in Sedalia driving his own Buick powered midget #3. Wildhaber died in 1973, when a car crossed the median and hit his truck head on in Ohio. By Candy Cocktail Animals are my favorite thing in this whole, wide, wonderful world. I have always had a great love and appreciation for all kinds of critters, large and small. Not only are they man’s best friend simply because with their unconditional and prejudice free love they bring people so much comfort and happiness, but they also serve and aid us on a daily basis. This love is not just given by God’s 4legged creatures, but by various animals in varying ways; from therapy horses to courier pigeons to service dogs that support both civilians and the military alike. At the end of October I saw a program on Hallmark Channel called the Hero Dog Awards and decided it was something I certainly needed to share with the Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine readers. Not to just some information about the organization and dogs that were on the show, but it made me think about the many ways that animals have performed extraordinary services to their owners and countries throughout history. The American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards™ is an annual national competition to recognize America's outstanding Hero Dogs. The Hero Dog Awards were created to celebrate the powerful relationship between dogs and people. A Hero Dog will unconditionally avail him or herself to us in so many important ways, whether it is saving lives on the battlefield, lending sight or hearing to a human companion, providing therapeutic support to children suffering from cancer or just greeting us with a wagging tail at the end of a hard day. Heroic hounds are nominated by anyone in one of eight categories: Law Enforcement Dogs; Arson Dogs; Service Dogs; Therapy Dogs; Military Dogs; Guide & Hearing Dogs; Search and Rescue Dogs; and Emerging Hero Dogs (for ordinary dogs that do extraordinary things or are just heroes to us). It is estimated that 83 million dogs reside in our country, up from 68 million in 2000. Man’s best friend has enjoyed a role like no other companion animal as now more homes include a furred, four-legged family member than ever before. For thousands of years, dogs have been man’s best friend. They have comforted us, protected us, and given us their unconditional love, and the awards creators thought it was time to pay tribute to the dogs. The Hero Dog Awards were created to celebrate the powerful relationship between dogs and people and recognize extraordinary acts of heroism performed by ordinary dogs. During a nationwide search, 135 dogs from all across the country were nominated and more than one and a half million votes were cast by the American public, culminating in the selection of eight extraordinary canine finalists in each category: ARSON DOG CATEGORY - Sponsored by State Farm WINNER: Kai (San Antonio, TX)– The San Antonio Fire Department’s six-year-old black Lab was rescued from a shelter and given a second chance and a new lease on life. Her nose for finding things was apparent when she was seen digging the only tennis ball out of the shelter’s box of toys. After undergoing extensive training, she now
helps keep others safe by investigating arson cases by using her powerful nose to detect the common accelerants that arsonists use to commit their deadly, destructive crime. In her four-year career she has taken part in more than 200 investigations and also helps to keep her community safe by teaching children about the importance of fire safety. (Charity Partner: Project Paws Alive) EMERGING HERO DOG CATEGORY - Sponsored by Trupanion WINNER: Xena (Johns Creek, GA) – This pit bull was knocking on death’s door when she was brought into a Georgia shelter outside Atlanta. Emaciated and dehydrated, she was given just a one percent chance at survival. Unbelievably, she defied the odds, made a full recovery and was adopted by a family with a little boy with autism. Before, the child had closed himself off to the world, but the arrival of Xena sparked something in the child the family had never seen before, and he went from silent to constantly singing to and chatting with Xena the Warrior Puppy. Now, they are an inseparable pair. (Charity Partner: Sheltie Rescue of Utah) GUIDE/HEARING DOG - by Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food WINNER: Xxon (Bloomfield, CT) – In January 2010, an explosion in Kandahar, Afghanistan left Air Force Sergeant Michael Malarsie blind and killed four of his fellow servicemen, including his best friend. Though he lost his sight, Sgt. Malarsie was soon partnered with Xxon, and they became the only active duty guide dog team in the Air Force. Now retired, Sgt. Malarsie continues to work with Xxon every day as the dog helps get him safely to wherever he needs to be. The pair is also outspoken advocates for the importance of service dogs to members of the military, visiting members of Congress to discuss this important issue. (Charity Partner: Fidelco). LAW ENFORCEMENT DOG CATEGORY WINNER: Kota (Winchester, VA) – On January 3, 2014, this member of the Winchester, Virginia police force was injured while responding to a burglary in progress. While in the process of detaining the suspect – who had hidden himself in the upstairs crawlspace – the ceiling gave way and the dog tumbled to the hardwood floor eight feet below. Undeterred, he bravely climbed back up the stairs and helped his fellow officers finish the call, fighting with a severely fractured limb to ensure their safety. Kota is now undergoing extensive physical therapy with hopes of one day returning to active duty. (Charity Partner: K9s4COPs) MILITARY DOG - Sponsored by Shotz Natural Energy WINNER: Chaney (Waverly, IA) – This eight-year-old lab retired from the Marines in 2013 after multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as an IED detection dog. While deployed, Chaney not only saved countless lives by locating IEDs, he also served as a great morale booster for everyone in his squad. Since retiring, Chaney was adopted by one of his handlers and they now spend many hours volunteering around the Midwest for a nonprofit organization called Retrieving Freedom, Inc., which trains service dogs for disabled veterans and children with autism. (Charity Partner: America’s VetDogs) SEARCH AND RESCUE DOG - Sponsored by Mission Manager WINNER: Bretagne (Cypress, TX) – Over her long career, Bretagne has made a significant contribution to the search and rescue community through her many deployments including the World Trade Center after 9/11, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and Hurricane Rita in 2005. Although she retired from active duty in 2008, she now continues as an ambassador for search and rescue dogs as she visits elementary schools where she helps first graders learn to read. Even at her older age, she still goes into work with a bigger lust for life than dogs half her age. (Charity Partner: Penn Vet Working Dog Center) SERVICE DOG - Sponsored by Modern Dog Magazine WINNER: JJ Krawczyk (Apex, NC)– Once a shelter dog, this small hero was rescued, trained, and partnered with a young girl suffering from a rare condition known as Mastocytosis, which can cause severe reactions for her. This dog with the gifted nose can detect when reactions are about to occur, alerting the girl’s parents that her life might be in danger. When she needed surgery recently, doctors requested the dog be present in the operating room to help keep the girl alive. Though she has no medical degree, or even a pedigree, she is one of the most powerful tools for doctors to keep the young girl’s condition at bay. (Charity Partner: Freedom Service Dogs)

The eighth and final dog is the country’s top therapy dog, a pit bull mix named Susie from High Point, North Carolina who overcame a terrible ordeal but went on to bring hope to both people and animals, was named this year’s American Hero Dog. Susie was only a puppy when her owner beat her savagely and set her on fire, leaving her for dead in a local park in Greensboro, North Carolina. After being rescued by a local animal shelter and nursed back to health, she was adopted by Donna Lawrence, who had been the victim of a terrible dog attack that nearly killed her and left her without the ability to have children. Together, they helped each other heal from their physical and emotional wounds, triumphing over pain and fear to become voices for abused animals and helping pass “Susie’s Law” in North Carolina, which calls for harsher penalties for convicted animal abusers. Susie became the subject of the movie, “Susie’s Hope,” and working side by side, Donna and Susie continue to make the world a better place for others by visiting hospitals, schools and nursing homes to inspire people never to give up. This year’s therapy dog category sponsor, as well as the campaign’s online sponsor, is the leading animal health company, Zoetis. Donna Lawrence with her pup Susie, the winner of the top American Hero Dog for 2014. (Photo credit: Melissa Curtin) (all other photos of event from the Hero Dog awards website) I considered the most noteworthy part of the show to be when military supporter and actor Gary Sinise appeared in a public service announcement of a charity that more people should know about and how their cause is a very worthy one; Mission K9 Rescue. Mission K9 Rescue is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working dogs worldwide. The organization’s purpose is to serve retiring and retired Military Working Dogs, Contract Working Dogs and other dogs who serve by providing monetary, transportation, adoption, and professional assistance for these retired hero dogs. Believing that these hero dogs have a right to a good retirement, a loving home and lifelong care, the organization works tirelessly to find these hero dogs a home when they retire or are discharged from duty. Many people do not know that there are literally thousands of these dogs that have risked it all in the protective service of our military personnel. Our military service dogs have worked to detect bombs, drugs, weaponry and much more. They deserve a chance to rest and play as they move on from their service. This is such a worthwhile cause because these service dogs work with both US and Coalition Forces to bring life-saving capabilities to the fight against terrorism. However, the sad reality is that the dogs are not deployed with the military unit so they must be returned separately. Retired working dogs may be adopted by their former handlers or civilians, but while some contractors bring retired dogs home to the U.S., others do not want to bear the expense of bringing the dogs home so they will sell, “farm” them out, adopt them out to local nationals, leave the dogs there or worse. Adoptive families must bear the cost of transporting these dogs home IF the contractor even tries to find them a home. Retired military dogs may be adopted by their former handlers, law enforcement or civilians. Former handlers or civilians adopting MWDs that are retired overseas must pay the cost of bringing the dog home as they are still considered “pets, not vets”.

The American Humane Association has also been involved in helping military heroes, and has been working with Mission K9 Rescue and the U.S. War Dog Association to bring home and reunite military dogs with their hero handlers. Following an emotional scene during the 2014 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards™ in which the audience met Marine Corporal Matt Foster who was reunited with his beloved former military hero dog Mick after a year apart following their service in Afghanistan, noted philanthropist, animal welfare and disabled veterans advocate Lois Pope announced a pledge of $150,000 to support American Humane Association’s efforts to aid and pay tribute to the nation’s brave military hero dogs and their former handlers in addition to a $50,000 donation to the American Humane Association’s “K9 Battle Buddies program” to bring more of these veterans back together on American soil where they can both live out their well-deserved retirements in the way they deserve after a lifetime of service. Hero dog Kai attends the American Humane Association’s 4th Annual “Hero Dog Awards” (Photo credit: Invision) Clearly a dog is man’s best friend. As you reflect on these stories of hero dogs, take another look at your four-legged friend. Even though there are awards for just a few of these dogs, there are many dogs currently serving our country. More than 600 K-9s, or Military Working Dogs, are currently being used in both Iraq and Afghanistan. With their individually trained handler, they continue to be used for guarding, patrolling and detection work. The dogs receive tactical vests equipped with a camera and microphone that allow the dogs to relay vital information to their handler. During detection, these well-trained K-9s are trained to alert their handler of even the smallest amount of any type of explosive. This detection is useful when securing entry points, patrolling inside secure installations and at checkpoints. The average success rate for bomb detection by working dog in the military is 98%. They are still widely used in the military today, although the use of working dogs in the military dates back to ancient times. The dogs were used by the Egyptians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans. They were used for many jobs in ancient times, including being used as guards dogs, as messengers, as tokens of royalty and in battle, sometimes even donning armor. In the United States, the first canine on record to serve in the military is noted during the Seminole War. They were similarly used in the Civil Was and during WWI as mascots to lift the morale of the men in the trenches or to pull small carts containing guns and other necessary supplies. Sergeant Stubby from World War I Canines were used in a variety of roles during World War II. The USMC used them to assist with overtaking islands in the South Pacific that were occupied by the Japanese Forces. During this time the Doberman Pincher was named the official dog of the United States Marine Corps.

The most highly decorated canine of World War II was Chips, a German shepherd, collie and Siberian husky mix. During WWII, dog owners donated their dogs to the service. Chips was donated and sent out for training as a sentry dog in 1942. Assigned to handler Private John Rowell, Chips served with the 3rd Infantry Division. During the invasion of Sicily, Chips and Pvt. Rowell were trapped on a beach by a team of Italian machine gunners. Chips reacted heroically by jumping into the pillbox and attacking the gunners. The four men were forced to evacuate and surrender to U.S. troops. Chips had a scalp wound and some powder burns, but his day wasn’t over yet. Chips finished the day assisting in the capture of ten Italians. His incredible dedication and service throughout the war earned him a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. These awards were eventually rescinded due to Army policy which prevented animals from receiving commendations. Chips’ unit unofficially awarded him the Theater Ribbon with Arrowhead for an assault landing and eight Battle stars representing each campaign he participated in. In 1945, Chips was discharged from the Army and returned to his original owner. Dogs were used in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Often trained as scout dogs, they were capable of detecting ambushes, weapon caches and even enemy fighters that were hiding underwater. It is estimated that close to 5,000 dogs served during the Vietnam War. Along with the 10,000 US service-men who acted as dog-handlers, it is estimated they saved over 10,000 lives. The dogs were often stationed outside of the camps, towers and/or bunkers. The US Army, US Navy and USMC all used sentry dogs on large bases to protect their perimeters. Smoky, the littlest hero of World War II, is a legend in Yorkshire terrier history. Her service not only renewed interest in the breed, but kept her adopted owner safe during wartime. Twelve years ago when I was researching dogs and had my heart set on a Yorkshire terrier, I learned about Smoky. At 4 pounds and 7 inches tall, this war dog is cited as the first therapy dog. Having a Yorkshire terrier myself, I am partial to the cuteness of Smoky! Smoky was found in February of 1944 in an abandoned foxhole in the New Guinea Jungle by an American soldier. For the next two years, Smoky back-packed through the rest of the war with Corporal William A. Wynne of Cleveland, Ohio on combat flights in the Pacific. Unlike the official war dogs of World War II, she faced adverse circumstances. Despite primitive conditions and the humidity of living in the New Guinea jungle without veterinary care or a proper diet, Smoky slept in Wynne's tent on a blanket made from a green felt card table cover and shared Wynne's C-rations and an occasional can of Spam. In her downtime she learned several tricks that she would perform for Special Services troops and in hospitals from Australia to Korea. Smoky learned over 200 commands and hand signals while overseas. As described by Wynne, "Smoky Served in the South Pacific with the 5th Air Force, 26th Photo Recon Squadron [and] flew 12 air/sea rescue and photo reconnaissance missions." On those flights, Smoky spent long hours dangling in a soldier's pack near machine guns used to ward off enemy fighters. Smoky was credited with twelve combat missions and awarded eight battle stars. She survived 150 air raids on New Guinea and made it through a typhoon at Okinawa. Smoky even parachuted from 30 feet (9.1 m) in the air, out of a tree, using a parachute made just for her.
Wynne credited Smoky with saving his life by warning him of incoming shells on an LST (transport ship), calling her an "angel from a foxhole." As the ship deck was booming and vibrating from anti-aircraft gunnery, Smoky guided Wynne to duck the fire that hit 8 men standing next to them. Smoky's tricks enabled her to become a hero in her own right by helping engineers to build an airbase at Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, a crucial airfield for Allied war planes. She helped to run a telegraph wire through a soil sifted 70-foot-long pipe that was 8 inches in diameter. As stated in the book Yorkie Doodle Dandy: Or, the Other Woman Was a Real Dog, authored by Bill Wynne, Smoky’s work prevented the need to have approximately 250 ground crewman move around and keep operational, 40 United States fighters and reconnaissance planes, while a construction detail dug up the taxiway, placing the men and the planes in danger and possibly the peril of destruction by enemy bombings. What would have been a dangerous three-day digging task to place the wire was instead completed by this little dog in minutes. After they returned from war, Smoky became a national sensation, appearing on TV shows, traveling to Hollywood and performing all over the world for the next 10 years. She even walked across a tightrope blindfolded. Smoky and Wynne were also popular entertainers at veterans’ hospitals. According to an Animal Planet investigation, Smoky was the first therapy dog on record. Her 12 years of service in this arena began in July 1944 at the 233rd Station Hospital in New Guinea, where she accompanied nurses to see the incoming battlefield casualties from the Biak Island invasion. Sinbad was obtained by Chief Boatswain's Mate A. A. "Blackie" Rother of the USCGC George W. Campbell, who intended the dog as a gift for a girlfriend. When she could not take him, Rother brought the dog as he returned from liberty in 1937. No crewman would take the dog, leaving him a stray without an owner, but most wanted him to remain on board. To justify enlistment, eliminating the need for the dog to have a master, the crew said that the dog displayed the attributes of a sailor by drinking coffee, whiskey with beer chasers at port bars, having regular and general quarter’s duty stations, and generally demonstrating seamanship. According to the Coast Guard and several published articles, he was enlisted into the service with his paw print on enlistment papers. As Foley notes, the dog was assigned his own service and Red Cross identification numbers, service record and bunk. Being prone to the indiscretions of both a canine and a sailor, Sinbad was subject to Captains Mast on two occasions and was promoted and demoted in rank on several occasions. Sinbad ended his time at sea with the rank K9C Chief Dog and commensurate pay rate. Sinbad gained fame from the media attention of his presence in bars in ports of call. Once described by Life Magazine as "an old sea dog [who] has favorite bars and plenty of girls in every port”, Sinbad retired and lived another three years quietly ashore, frequenting Kubel's bar on Seventh. New York papers featured the story of the clash with U-606 where Sinbad was sequestered below after a night on the town. Photo sessions and network news interviews when the Campbell was in port served the home-front morale effort and gave Sinbad nationwide recognition. Sinbad also frequented Red Cross Facilities. Sinbad was long known for playing with a metal washer that he balanced on his nose, tossed in the air and caught. Sinbad was aboard Campbell throughout World War II, but was kept below deck and away from gunfire. A statue of Sinbad is on the mess deck of current "Famous-class" medium endurance cutter USCGC Campbell (WMEC-909), successor to the preceding Campbell. Sinbad and crewmates, 1943

I believe that dogs are truly man’s best friend. However, one cannot overlook the work of other animals in the armed services. Although it may sound like something out of a fairytale story, Carrier Pigeons really were used to carry communications during the First World War. Today’s communication tactics were still non-existent so the pigeons were used regularly. Carrier pigeons were fitted with a small carrier attached to the pigeon’s leg. The message would be folded and placed inside the canister. The pigeon would then be released to fly back to headquarters, often to relay coordinates. The carrier pigeons were likewise used for critical dispatches and status messages. It is estimated that more than 100,000 carrier pigeons were used by both sides during the war. They are recorded as having a 95% success rate in navigating successfully to their intended destination. Astonishingly enough, even if the pigeons were gone when the pigeon lofts moved with the troops, the pigeons still managed to find their loft as they were returning. Their ability to find their way back to those who used them as messengers was vital. In addition to its acute homing instinct, the pigeon was able to travel at great speeds, making it almost impossible to shoot down. Carrier pigeons were even used on board warships and seaplanes, where they could be used as a backup if radio communications were to break down. One of the oldest groups of soldiers was known as the US Army Signal Corps. During WWI, they were given 600 novice pigeons to train themselves to use as a means of communication. These are the men who were responsible for assuring those messages got through from unit to unit or branch to branch. Cher Ami, translated Dear Friend, was one of the most noted carrier pigeons from WWI. This pigeon, in the fall of 1918, spent several months on the front line and flew 12 vital missions. On one specific mission, the desperate crew of 500 soldiers were trapped and dwindled down to 200 by the second day when they released Cher Ami with their message. German soldiers spotted the pigeon and tried to shoot him down, but Cher Ami managed to fly high above the enemy fire, covering 25 miles in just 25 minutes. When he arrived at his coop, he was found severely injured, but the silver canister containing the all-important message was still attached. The bird’s perseverance is credited with saving more than 200 lives. Dedicated medics from the 77th Infantry Division worked valiantly to save Cher Ami. Though successful, they were unable to save his leg. They did, however, carve him a wooden leg. When the French soldiers, who the Americans were trying to assist, received word of Cher Ami’s courage and determination, they awarded him one of France’s great honors – the Crois de guerre with a palm leaf. Once the pigeon was well enough to travel, it was sent to the United States. Cher Ami, one of the most well-known carrier pigeons of World War I, was preserved by a taxidermist after his death and is still on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.

Model Erin Belle is a "Model. Actress. Rock N Roller. Health coach. My whole life is covered in glitter and dog hair." Versatile Erin started modeling in Paris (the one in France) at 14 years old, as a runway model. She's done burlesque shows, lots of pinup, high-fashion, pop, superhero, adventurecon, comic books, movies, music videos...She has her own line of womens' fashions (“La Femme Night Owl”), runs a blog, she Twitters (twitter.com/ theerinbelle) & “Vines,” & is a health coach (facebook.com/ Whatsupwellness) The Hot Rod Truck you can see in this photo, somewhere there behind Erin, is a 1932 Ford pickup Rat Rod, basically. But it's not what it seems. It's better. Chopped and Channeled, 350 Chevy with nice sounding cam, 350 turbo transmission, 9" Ford rear-end, 4 wheels disk brakes, Mustang II front end with rack & pinion steering, turn signals and 4 way flashers, roll up windows, original windshield rolls out, custom bed, all steel truck with Patina paint, looks Rusty but it's not. Truck was featured on the poster and display with Miss World Of Wheels 2014. Well built, great running and great driving fun Rat Rod. $16,500 Call 205-915-7469. Erin & this Rod were featured in a poster for the 2014 World of Wheels in Chattanooga, Birmingham. She signed the posters there & had her photos taken by fans (thousands of times!). Another hot pinup model, Sarah, who is also Miss Hooters Alabama, will be at the 2015 World of Wheels shows (Chattanooga, Jan 9-11 & Birmingham Feb. 6-8). Plus, they'll have the famous pin striper Von Hot Rod, Spongebob, Callum Worthy (the zaney DEZ on Disney’s Austin & Ally) & a variety of other movie stars & celebrities. Best of all, the longevity & popularity of these shows & their ISCA connection, draws the best car builders from around the US. You'll see amazing cars there that you've not seen anywhere locally, cars that really can only be seen at a World of Wheels. Would you like to have Sarah, Erin, or a similar knock-out, gorgeous, fun, model at your show or event? Several models love doing it, they're proven show-magnets. Or, have your logo professionally airbrushed on to a model appearing at the shows. She & your logo will appear in thousands of cellphone-camera images. She'll be photographed by everyone & your logo will be front & center. We can also do a poster of one of the models, with your logos. She can do a poster-signing at your business or give them out at shows. Contact Jimbo if we can put something together for you. These models represent lots of possibilities to bring huge amounts of fun publicity for your business, & for not much money.

I've finished life's chores assigned to me, So put me on a boat headed out to sea. Please send along my fishing pole For I've been invited to the fishin' hole. Where every day is a day to fish, To fill your heart with every wish. Don't worry, or feel sad for me, I'm fishin' with the Master of the sea. We will miss each other for awhile, But you will come and bring your smile. That won't be long you will see, Till we're together you and me. To all of those that think of me, Be happy as I go out to sea. If others wonder why I'm missin' Just tell 'em I've gone fishin'
