“ Sometimes your enemies will do more to promote you than your friends. They thought they were going to stop you, discourage you, intimidate you, but they didn’t realize God used them to light a fire on the inside. They helped you learn how to pray bold prayers, how to declare God’s favor, how to persevere, to stay focused, to fight the good fight of faith. They meant it for harm, but God used them to your advantage. ”
…… Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo July is filled with many things to celebrate. Not only is it the birth date we celebrate our independence but it is also is the birthday of Gulf Coast MotorSports (what started out as the Harley Tymes a newsletter for MS Coast Darley-Davidson in July 1995 has turned into the magazine you are reading now.) Over the years the name has changed but the original idea remains the same. And that is to keep readers informed about what is happening, along the Gulf Coast, encouraging them to participate and most of all let them know that it is still is a big newsletter. The emails filled with jokes, tips and comments have a way of finding their way onto our opening pages and the articles & pictures sent in by our regular contributing writers are a feature that really shows just how far this magazine has reached. On the 21st of July will be the gathering of Car Clubs and independents at the annual Car Appreciation Picnic & Cruise-in at Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins, MS. The Red Creek Classic Car Club host this family style gathering for the hundreds that show up. If you haven't attended this yet, here is your invitation….Please come to the Picnic. I look forward to seeing you there. Here are some of the emails….. Jimbo, There is a lot more truth in this that I really care to admit ... How could I have slumped so low ? I used to think I was just a regular guy, but . . .I was born white, which now, whether I like it or not, makes me a racist.

I am a fiscal and moral conservative, which by today's standards, makes me a fascist. I am heterosexual, which according to gay folks, now makes me a homophobic. I am non-union, which makes me a traitor to the working class and an ally of big business. I am a Christian, which now labels me as an infidel. I believe in the 2nd Amendment, which now makes me a member of the vast gun lobby. I am over 70, which makes me a useless old man. I think and I reason, therefore I doubt much that the mainstream media tells me, which must make me a reactionary. I am proud of my heritage and our inclusive American culture, which makes me a xenophobe. I value my safety and that of my family and I appreciate the police and the legal system, which makes me a right-wing extremist. I believe in hard work, fair play, and fair compensation according to each individual's merits, which today makes me an anti-socialist. deplorable's”. Please help me come to terms with the new me . . . because I'm just not sure who I am anymore! I would like to thank all my friends for sticking with me through these abrupt, new found changes in my life and my thinking. I just can't imagine or understand what's happened to me so quickly! And the funny thing is that…. it's all just taken place over the last 7 or 8 years! And now, as if all this crap wasn't enough to deal with, I'm now afraid to go into a restroom! giff1500@ Jimbo, I have been thinking about moving to Florida. You can say what you want about Florida, but you never hear of anyone retiring and moving north. I started reading 'The Villages' Dating Ads in a Florida newspaper. Who says seniors don't have a sense of humor!!! FOXY LADY-Sexy, fashion-conscious blue-haired beauty, 80's, slim, 5'4' (used to be 5'6'). Searching for sharp-looking, sharp-dressing companion. Mendal Yoho Jimbo, We wanted to do our part in helping teenagers in our neighborhood earn some extra money for the summer. So when a teenager girl, decided to hire herself out as a "handy-woman" and knocked on our door. She asked my husband if he had any odd jobs for her to do. "Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch," he said, "How much will you charge me?" Delighted, the girl quickly responded, "How about $50?" My husband agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she would need was in the garage. I overheard the conversation and asked my husband, "Does she realize that our porch goes ALL the way around the house?" He responded, "That's a bit cynical, isn't it?" "You're right.” I replied, “I guess I'm starting to believe all those dumb stories about the kids today we've been getting by email lately." Later that day, the teenager came to the door to collect her money. "You're finished already?" the startled husband asked. "Yes, she replied, and I even had paint left over, so I gave it two coats." Impressed, my husband reached into his pocket for the $50.00 and handed it to her along with a $10.00 tip. “And, by the way," the teenager added, "it's not a Porch, it's a Lexus." jeaniemay1948@

Country Roads A reflection on the bad roads I've known. Sent in by: mrlonranger@ “Country Roads”. Does that make you think of music or scenic places? Not me--I think of bad roads. Not Interstate Highways or State Primary Roads. But, secondary roads, county roads, unclaimed roads. If you live on one, you know it. Some country roads have tar over slag. That’s OK, if you go slow. Your highway department may say they have macadam roads, but no one has ever seen one. Gravel roads are common. The gravel is loose. Go slow, don’t follow too close. Mud-flaps save lives. Gravel roads have some bad spots. That’s where deep ruts hide. Rock roads are rougher than gravel with more bad spots. Look out for real big rocks that could mash something under the car. Go slow and try to keep the tires on the big rocks. If the tires slide off the big rocks, you have big trouble. Some folks claim they live on a “rock-based” road. They say there are rocks under the mud. That’s just to lure you out there. C’mon. It’s a dirt road. Dirt roads are bad during mud season, after a rain, and most of the time. No worries about speeding. Ruts, dust, and mud keep you in low gear. (Model T Fords ran on roads that were horse-andbuggy bad. For decades people walked miles through mud, before dawn and after dark, to a school bus stop. They would carry their school shoes and leave their muddy boots in the bus stop. The school bus couldn’t get through the mud roads. A man I once knew drove an old Jeep from town to home. He also had an old car in town to drive on weekends. This was before old cars became hobbies. (I thought he was rich.) There are still plenty of bad roads. Now kids with jacked-up four-wheel drive trucks blast into mud for fun. Until they need a tow. Don’t call me. Mud is not fun for me. Country roads are not music or pretty. Bad roads make for long muddy walks. It’s a poor ride that don’t beat a walk.
Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage July 2017
Things around and in the Carriage House have slowed down almost to a halt. The same can almost be said of the progress on the Queens bathroom renovation. The reason for this, I have had and am dealing with a most terrible sinus infection. This has been going on for about two months now. I have made several trips to doctors, and now a specialist, lots of different meds, and not much progress being made in this situation. I have been able to do little with the hot rod and far much less with the motorcycle, I did manage to make it to the Atomic Blast, and did a benefit poker run in May. Very sorry to say I have missed many worthy events. This is almost as bad as having a broken car or truck and not being able to participate and enjoy the ride. I do so hope this is cured soon, or just gets tolerable, so I can once again have fun with cars. And I do so miss many of you car folks. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable July Fourth. And do remember the fireworks were the real deal in the years prior to 1776, and the founding of these United States and its Independence. Later from the Queens Castle Gizmo.

Jimbo, I am proud to say that the 7th Annual Veterans Appreciation Fun Run was an outstanding success. The weather was fantastic, our best attendance yet, 50 vehicles total, great food, fellowship and best of all Our Veterans really enjoyed us taking time to be with them. On behalf of all in attendance I would like to thank the Veteran Home’s Directors and Staff for their cooperation and support. Everything, including parking, went mighty slick at both Homes. Special thanks to Zen Wendel for helping Teresa with Registration and Fonzie Hux for arranging a Rankin County Sheriff Department traffic blockade at Berry’s Seafood. A super big thank you to Paul and Becky Iannazzo for supplying American Flags for all the vehicles. I also want to point out that Paul, Becky and “Miss Goldie,” their 69 Torino, make the trip from Louisiana every year to be with us. Please remember our Sponsors, as without their support this would not be a free event. Keep Thomas Yates in mind next time your street rod needs some professional attention, Dale Harris is ready to help you with all your business advertising needs, Tim Adams is waiting to personalize your ride with special custom designed graphs, and of course Jimbo Perkins Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine is a must read for all streetrodders. The 2018 Veterans Appreciation Fun Run will be June 23, 2018. All times the same, starting in Jackson, lunch at the Smokehouse BBQ, and travel to the Kosciusko Veterans Home. Remember, if you can’t make the complete event you can join us and leave us at any time. Please pass on to all your friends what a great Fun Run this is and the fantastic fellowship they are missing if they don’t attend !!!!!!!!!!! This year we collected $700 in donations to be divided between the two Homes for their Activities account. Let’s try to double that next year. As always if you have any suggestions on how to improve this Fun Run, please don’t hesitate to call me. 601-829-2589 Thanks for Your Continued Support and see you next year, Ollie Patterson

Seven years ago, the idea to start a group that could share their love of cars and meet fellow enthusiast resulted in the monthly breakfast at Hardees in Lucedale. It began gradually and has grown since its inception. Today there were 47 cars/trucks and four motorcycles enjoying the sunshine and low humidity. It doesn't matter if you have a '53 Corvette, a '65 Mustang or a '31 Model A you will meet a fellow car buff and it may surprise you to find they have the same interest or quite possibly the same model car. Come join us and visit with the owners or bring your own vehicle and share in the joy of America's greatest love…the love of a car. This bright canary yellow '53 Ford is owned by John Rutherford of Lucedale, MS. John has owned this truck for three years. The truck was built by Clyde Rayborn who is now deceased. This sharp looking truck is powered by a 350 Chevy, 700R automatic and has cold air. John is a regular at the Hardee's breakfast. This little beauty is for sale and if interested contact John. Another sharp looking truck is owned by Dale Peffers of Mobile. This is a '50 Chevy with an LS motor. The color is very unusual. If you look at it in the shade, it's black but in the sunlight, there is a hint of red. The color is called Lava Red and was painted by Nick Outzen of George County, MS. Dale has had this truck for seven years. In addition, Dale has a '48 Chevy fleetline. Thanks for coming and sharing your truck.

While I was surfing the web looking for a topic for this month’s magazine, I came across the article below. It was published in Auto Round-up http://autoroundup.com/index.php/difference-rat-rods-traditionalskool-rods-kustoms/
I emailed Scooter and asked for permission to re-print. Scooter gave me a call a little while later and we talked for quite sometime. He has and still writes for a variety of popular magazines and he may share some of his past articles with us. I look forward to what he has to share… jimbo
The Difference Between Rat Rods & Traditional Old Skool Rods and Kustoms By Scott Strenzel, aka Scooter from Scooter’s Garage
Rat Rods: Fun, low budget, rusty patina hot rods that are built with junkyard parts, but built to be safe and to be driven not to be show detailed. Rat Rods can Rat Rods, can be pre-1949 or post 1949 vehicles. Another definition of a rat goes like this: A car that’s been put together on a serious budget and by any means necessary. More to ponder: The goal of a rat rod is to have a safe car that has a small investment and will generate as much fun as possible with a short build time and one that eliminates the shiny car worries. Plus, the following has been a serious problem with the whole rat rod movement. A guy that has a 1948 Plymouth 4-door or a 1972 Impala 4door that’s just about rusted in half with rattle-canned red rims, a loud flex straight pipe with a Mexican blanket draped on the seat thinks he has a rat rod. Wrong! He just has a piece of unsafe s--- that ought to be off the road anyway. Rat rods should have their mechanics up to functional highway standards. Yet, they usually are fabricated using rebuilt used nonaftermarket parts and tend to have unusual engine combos. And the owners enjoy displaying some far out individual ideas. Things like airplane seats, old tractor seats and grills, beer keg gas tanks, bias ply tires, handmade taillights, grills, bumpers and so much more it would use up my space. Some use modern frames and drive lines and throw on an old patina body and never intend to do a shiny paint job. I’ve seen guys have a no rust car soda blasted and then let it sit outside in the snow and rain all winter so it gets natural patina. Then it’s shot with a clear, no rust paint to stop the rust and is then good to go. Each year, rat rods as well as the traditional/old skool hot rods and customs have crawled closer to the minds of the mainstream public thanks to a few TV shows and having them attending more events. Plus, now there is about five to seven different magazines on the rack that you can buy each month that have no stock old cars or numbersmatching vehicles in them. Hear this quote too: rat rods and traditionals have a soul that has been developed due to the sacrifices that went into building them. Also, some of us need to recall that our youth now

makes less generally, so they can’t afford to build or buy large dollar cars. This has brought about the new growth in these cars. Please, grey hairs, embrace them, their cars and be friendly to the kids. Remember most of us oldies didn’t have a new Super Bird or a Chip Foose ride at age 20 either. Traditional Old Skool Rods And Kustoms: These can be pre-1949 street rods or post WW II custom cars or trucks. The goal in building or changing the vehicle to this category of a car is by using older year used parts. Or, if you elect to use some aftermarket parts, you use the stuff that is considered to be before a certain year part. Some car clubs and associations say pre-1964, some say pre-1970. You have to just talk to the guys with the cars. They will gladly tell you what they feel or do as to the cut off year. The general public has happily taken a liking to all things being done in the old ways and yet able to function in today’s world. The act of doing a traditional or old skool or kustom stems from a mix of things. Research has to be done by reading old car magazines or after reading computer screen viewing the various images and specs. You have to get a feel as to if you want four wheel drum brakes, bias ply tires, steel wheel covers, and if you can be ok and actually be proud to have sold the stock taillights, the hood emblems at a swap meet. And use lights and a hood or side chrome from some other make of car. Also, some of the ways these cars are done has to do with them being historically correct. Hell, I even built a 1995 S-10 truck and done it for less than $1600, as if it was a 1950’s or 1960’s truck built by a kid working at the corner Texaco gas station for a $1.10 an hour at age 18. It was nosed, it had hood pins, chrome peep mirrors, Lake Dump tubes, and ($2.00) shaved doors with no electric poppers, and much more old skool stuff. My point here is to convince you that you can build for tradition with some new stuff if you learn the old ways. Email me and I’ll help you. If you check them out, they can be done much easier and cheaper than a tuner, air bagged, or subframed car. You just have to develop an appreciation for the thump of nylon bias ply’s when it’s cold and not having cruise control, air bags and a CD player. I am even seeing kids getting excited about having a working 8-track tape player playing music by some old guy they had never heard of by the name of Bob Seger or Bill Haley. To sum it all up, get out there. Be nice to our youth and check out all different cars in our old car hobby with an open mind. After all it is OUR hobby. Also, an announcement, please read this and email me with your comments and questions. Scooter has become so enthused about doing anything that might help bring more youth into the hobby. Now, I am asking you event biggies to have me attend your show so I can give out the Scooter’s Favorite Youth Car Award. I already have been setup with four or five shows for the upcoming season that supported my quest and that number is growing by the minute! Thanks, let’s get this to be a big thing for all of us, please. Thank you, Scooter is a happy camper. scooter4422@comcast.net

The Cole Report This Month we started out with the Biloxi VA show always a good one that raises money for the Veterans rehab/exercise equipment. The Thursday cruise in finds us at the Silver Slipper Casino's weekly car/bike night, can't beat the buffet at this one. During the week on Wednesday, I headed to The Boyington Heath Care and Rehab center to eat lunch and hang with the residents and staff. This one always is special hanging with these residents. Our next stop was St. Clare's Church in Waveland for their annual Seafood Festival. Another fun day with friends for a good cause. That evening we headed to Long Beach Harbor for one of the older cruise-ins on the Coast. Always hard to beat just hanging out with a view of the water and a nice breeze blowing. The next weekend we headed to Poplarville for the Blueberry Festival lots of crafts, foods and gifts to look at. We had more flowers, plants and gift items in the back of the Model ‘A’ than somebody moving across the country all at good bargain deals. We finished up the Month at the Misfits Street Krewzers 2nd Saturday cruise in at the Bay St.Louis Harbor. This one has over 10 Restaurants and over 30 Craft, Gift, Art and Antique shops to visit. See y'all somewhere or everywhere and remember to watch for our friends on bikes out cruising also. Allen Cole

We're Getting Revved-Up for Cruisin' The Coast 2017 Hello Everyone, Cruisin' The Coast is just around the corner and we are in the home stretch. It seems like just yesterday we were packing up after last year's event! As you read this article, you will notice that we added a new stamping venue in Pascagoula to our lineup this year. We've also moved the Salute To Our Veterans event back to Tuesday and to Cruise Central. And for the first time in years, you'll be able to light 'em up during a burn-out in Pass Christian. There are tons of other little tweaks we have going on, so look closely and keep up with us on Facebook and here in Motorsports. Until October, y'all keep it between the lines and be safe out there.
Sincerely, Woody Executive Director Cruisin' The Coast Pascagoula Joins CTC as 3-Day Stamping Venue The City of Pascagoula has joined Cruisin’ The Coast in 2017 as an stamping venue October 5-7. Participants will be offered the opportunity to increase their CTC winnings at the Sunday drawing by $100 if they visit the City of Pascagoula venue and get their card stamped. Known as the "Flagship City" for its ties to shipbuilding and national defense, Pascagoula will open its downtown to cruisers and welcome you with open arms on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The venue will be much the same as our other locations, but with a Pascagoula twist. There will be music, food, fun and cars, cars and cars. If you've enjoyed the Pascagoula Cruise the last couple years, you'll love spending time in the heart of the city.
Burn 'em Up in The Pass It's been a few years, but a burn-out event is back for 2017! Pass Christian will host a burn-out on October 5 from 5-8 p.m. on 2nd Street. This event will be open to registered cruisers only and will begin once the Pass Christian stamping venue closes, so you really don't have to go anywhere, besides down the street. A band will also be playing from 7-9 p.m. Sounds like a great way to spend a day in Pass Christian!
Salute to Our Veterans Back at Cruise Central Once again, Cruisin' The Coast will honor those who served with the "Salute to Our Veterans" cruise-in. We are moving this patriotic event back to Cruise Central and back to Tuesday, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The event pays tribute to those who wore the uniform of our country, but the primary focus is getting patients to visit from the Biloxi Veteran's Administration Hospital. Residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport will also be out to see your cars and trucks. Fly your American flag, wear your service ball caps and meet some real American heroes!

Come for the Cars, Stay for the Music Music is to hot rodding what peanut butter is to jelly. Most of our music has centered around a 50s and 60s theme, keeping in the same lane as the early days of hot rodding. But just as we've made progress in cars and performance, the music we offer at Cruisin' The Coast will progress a bit this year, without forgetting our roots. We are going to bring in bands that play riffs from the 70s, 80s and maybe even some 90s rock.

Hot Rod History By: VonSkip Hot Rods - Typically American cars with large engines modified for linear speed. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the term "Hot Rod."
One explanation is that the term is a contraction of "hot roadster," meaning a roadster modified for speed. Open roadsters were the cars of choice to modify because they were light. Hot Rod may also refer to the cam or pushrods inside the engine or other to the exposed frame rails of such an automobile. It was adopted in the 1930s or 1940s as the name of a car that had been "hopped up" by modifying the cam to achieve higher performance.
History The term seems first to have appeared in the late 1930s,when kids from southern California would race their modified cars on the vast, empty dry lake beds northeast of Los Angeles under the rules of the Southern California Timing Association.
windshield, and/or fenders); lowering it; modifying, tuning, or replacing the engine to give more power; and changing the wheels and tires to improve traction and handling.
Hot Rod term was in the 1950 also uses for any car that did not fit into the mainstream. Such modifications were considered to improve the appearance as well leading to show cars in the 1960s replicating these same modifications along with a distinctive paint job. After World War II there were many small military airports throughout the country that were either abandoned or vary rarely used that allowed Hot Rodders across the country to race on marked courses. Originally Drag Racing had tracks that may have been as long 1 mile or more, and included up to 4 lanes of racing at the same time. As hot rodding became more popular in the 1950s, magazines and associations by Hot Rodders were started. As Hot Rodders began to race on the street in addition to drag strips, a need arose for an organization to promote the images of Hot Rodders. Hot rodders including Wally Parks created the National Hot Rod Association ( NHRA) in 1951...
To bring racing off the streets and onto the tracks. They created rules based on safety an entertainment, and allowed Hot Rodders of and caliber the ability to race. The annual California Hot Rod Reunion and National Hot Rod Reunion are held to honor pioneers in the sport. The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum houses the roots of hot rodding. As automobiles offered from the major automakers began increasing performance, the lure of Hot Rods began to wain.
The term became popular during and after World War II due to returning Soldiers who were given machining and/or engineering training, particularly in California. Originally meaning an old car... most often a Ford, typically a Model T, Model A, or a 1932 to 1934 Model B, that had been modified by: reducing weight (sometimes modifying the body by removing roof, hood, bumpers,

You no longer needed to put a Cadillac engine in a Ford roadster to be fast. You could now buy a Pontiac GTO that out performed your Hot Rod, and still have enough room to fit the wife and kids. After the 1973 Oil Crisis the public called on automakers to offer safety and fuel efficiency over performance. This led to a resurgence of Hot Rodding, although the focus was on driving Hot Rods over racing so the term 'Street Rod' was coined to denote a vehicle manufactured prior to 1949, often times with a late model drivetrain for reliability. Street Rodding as it was now known was a different phenomenon that Hot Rodding, as Street Roddering was mainly family oriented. National events were hosted by the National Street Rod Association (NSRA)
Which also stressed safety as the NHRA did 20 years before, but this was safety for the street as opposed to on the race track. Each NSRA event has a 'Safey Inspection Team' that performs a 23 points inspection process that goes beyond what normal State Safety Inspections Require. Nowadays people who own hot rods keep them clean and try to make them noticeable. There are many different sects of Hot Rodding now, there are...
Rat Rods... pieced together to look like old time jalopys. Don't be fooled... they sometimes require more work than a show rod.
Show Rods... created to compete in National Car Shows such as America's Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR), and the Detroit Autorama.
Traditional Rods... built according to a particular point in time, build techniques and materials,
( Image: Tardel / Cochran 1930 Ford Coupe )
Billet Rods... noted by many items being made from Billet aluminum,
Although collectively they are all referred to as Hot Rods, there are many magazines that feature real hot rods, including The Rodders Journal, Hot Rod Magazine, Rod and Custom Magazine, Street Rodder, and Popular Hot Rodding, etc... There are also television shows such as Rides, and American Hot Rod. Fast & Loud, etc... Hot rods are part of American culture, although there is growing controversy within the automotive hobby over an increasing trend towards the acquisition and irreversible modification of surviving historic, some even very rare, vehicles rather than the traditional hot rodding concept of the salvage and remanufacture of reusable junked parts. Hot Rod ERA The Hot Rod era extended from 1930 to the beginning of the muscle car era (about 1965), reaching its height in about 1955. During this time, there was an adequate supply of what hot rodders called "vintage tin" junk cars manufactured prior to 1942 that could be had cheaply. Many of these had sound bodies and frames and had been junked for mechanical reasons, since the running gear of early cars was not durable. The typical hot rod was heavily modified, particularly by replacing the engine and transmission, and possibly other components, including brakes and steering. Certain engines, such as the flathead Ford V8, and the small block Chevrolet V8 were particularly popular as replacements because of their compact size, availability, customization and power.

automotive paint and body work. The "classic era" of hot rod construction ended around 1965, partly because the supply of vintage tin had diminished, but mostly because new cars were equipped for greater speed and power from the factory with little or no modification required.

Today... there are still a large number of hot-rodders and street-rodders.

The Street Rod Nationals serves as a showplace for the majority of the hot-rodding and street-rodding world to display their cars and to find nearly any part needed to complete them. There is still a vibrant Hot Rod culture worldwide, especially in the United States and Sweden. But also in Japan and Europe there's a lot going on these days. The Hot Rod community has now been subdivided into two main groups: hot rodders and street rodders. Hot rodders build their cars using a lot of original, old parts, and follow the styles that were popular from the 1940s through the 1960s. Street rodders build cars (or have them built for them) using, primarily, new parts. There is a contemporary movement of traditional hot rod builders, car clubs and artists who have returned to the roots of hot rodding as a lifestyle... This current traditional hot rod culture is exemplified in a whole new breed of traditional hot rod builders, artists and styles, as well as classic style car clubs like the Deacons, the Shifters, and the Dragoons, etc... US Events like Viva Las Vegas and GreaseOrama showcase return to traditional hot rods and the greaser lifestyle. Underground magazines like Garage, Rolls & Pleats, and BurnOut showcase this return to traditional hot rods by covering events and people around the world.

the Bonneville Salt Flats By Steve Kanter Summers almost over, the kids are back in school, and the biggest question is; what did you do on your summer vacation? It’s a question that kids ask for weeks. Well, what did you do on your summer vacation? Me, I went to the Bonneville Salt Flats, for Speed Week, and was a crew member on a car that held a world record in C Modified Roadster at over 240mph! For over thirty years I have wanted to go to Bonneville during Speed Week. The allure of racing on salt, and the fascination of speed, is what has always drawn me to Bonneville. To be able to drive 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 mph or faster for 3, 4, or 5 miles is exciting to me. But, the Air Force, work, family and other responsibilities always came first. This year I went, and I just returned from the Bonneville Salt Flats, and it was great! Mike Redinger has been talking about salt racing for a couple of years now (he’s been there), and every time he would mention it, I would think to myself “I have got to go”. A Bonneville car is different than most other race cars, because where you try to make a drag car, Indy car, street car, etc as light as possible; on a Bonneville car, weight is not a real concern. As a matter of fact, you add weight! When Boogie Scott set the record several years ago in C Modified Roadster, he added about 1,500lbs of extra weight to his car! As Boogie tells it, “the more weight I added, the faster I went.” Bonneville is probably the last vestige of old school racing, where everybody helps everybody, and where inventiveness, creativity, and engineering, create some of the most interesting and strangest vehicles that have ever spun a wheel. How about a twin overhead cam Model “A” b engine, that did 138mph! Or a Chevrolet 350ci engine that has been cut in half length wise, for a displacement of 175ci, that has run over 200mph! Or a supercharged flathead v8 that has run over 220mph! Or how about a “32 roadster powered by a 450hp 1300cc Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle engine that broke the H/STR class record running 168mph! Or a twin turbo LS Chevrolet engine that has gone over 426mph! or how about an electric bar stool (electric cart) that set a record at over 45mph! The cars are fascinating to look at, and the people are very interesting to listen to as they tell you about their successes and losses. Mr. Johanson (he built the twin overhead cam b engine) has been to every Bonneville Speed Week since 1949. He missed the first one because his boss wouldn’t let him take time off from work. The Bean Bandits have built several cars, with their most recent being the one where they cut the Chevrolet engine in half, lengthwise, because their philosophy is “we do it the hard way.” George Poteet, the fastest man on earth, driving a piston powered, wheel driven vehicle, the Speed Demon. Their goal? 500mph! Then there is the family who lost one of their sons to the salts. The car rolled end over end many times, at over 250mph with such violence, that the rear end was actually slung from the car (pictures show it to be about twenty feet in the air. The body, engine parts, front suspension, and other parts were scattered along a two mile stretch of the track. There was nothing left of the car. That was three years ago, the father and other son have no plans to build another car or race one, but they return every year to Bonneville, and work tech. I worked tech for a day, which was arranged by Lee Kennedy, Car Technical Committee Chairman, for the SCTA. Wow, it’s amazing what or who you see going through tech. Mike Cook came through tech, very friendly, real talkative, got along great with the tech inspectors, and passed inspection. It wasn’t until later that I discovered that he is the son of Doug Cook, who, along with two others, campaigned a race car in the sixties; Stone, Woods and
Cook, perhaps you’ve heard of them. A real nice sixties style Indy race car came through tech, it was beautiful, incredible detail. The paint, markings, wheels, all said Indy 500. Even the drivers name on the car; Roger Ward, was done as I remembered it. I saw this car race at Indy. I was less than two feet from this car and driver, inspecting it, even said high to the driver. On the way out, the other inspector said “good luck Roger”, the driver said “thanks, you too”. I asked the other inspector if that was Roger Ward the Indy 500 racer, and he said “it’s his son, been coming here for years”. Wow! The rest of the day was great. Saw some more famous people, and not so famous people, but everyone had a story and a vehicle to race. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles, they all race at Bonneville. Now for the rest of the story. In January I was lucky enough to become a crew member of Bucket List Racing, a team owned by Dan Tacket. He’s building a 1954 Corvette called Silver Bullet to race at Bonneville and other high speed tracks. The work on the Corvette was proceeding at an acceptable pace, but the more we did, the more we realized that there was more to do, and had to be done. It became apparent to us in June that we would not be able to finish the car to the standards we were striving for in time for this year’s (2012) Speed Week. About May of this year, a friend of ours, Boogie Scott, concluded that he would not be able to finish his new engine in time for this year’s Speed Week. Dan just happened to have a newly built small block Chevrolet sitting on an engine stand, which he loaned to Boogie. Our crew, joined with Boogie, and we all went to Bonneville. But first we had to put the car together, and we did. Boogie and his girlfriend Shirley drove to Bonneville, while Dan and I flew, and arrived late Saturday afternoon. On Sunday I worked tech, learned a lot, saw a lot, and was in awe at all the cars, trucks, and motorcycles Incredible machines, each and every one of them. Dan and I also attended the rookie class, where we learned a great deal. Monday morning we prepped the car so Boogie could make a shakedown run to make sure the car was running well, and Dan’s engine would hold up. Boogie’s run went very well, clocking over 201mph on the big course. Upon his return, he gave the thumbs up, and said the car was running great. Boogie has been going to Bonneville for about fifteen years, and is a member of the very prestigious 200mph club! The car is owned, built and driven by Boogie Scott (for those not familiar with Boogie, Google him and see what he’s done). He is a very accomplished automobile craftsman. He can design, build, weld, hand form aluminum, use a lathe, and make any tool or gadget he needs. Some of the fastest cars in the racing community have used his frames and chassis, his suspensions, or both. His specialty is drag racing and salt racing. With Boogie’s approval on the car, he said “let’s get Dan licensed”. Monday, with the car prepped for Dan’s rookie run, off he went,

clocking a 139 mph run, which was perfect. Then we prepped the car again, so Dan could make another run on the short track, to qualify for running on the long track, which he did, by clocking 195 mph at the two and a quarter mile marker. Now we go to the long track. The car was running so well, it made our job easy. All we had to do was repack the chute, check the oil and gas, and go racing. Back to the pits to prep the car again for Dan’s first run on the long track. We finished prepping the car, and realized that it was getting late and decided that Tuesday morning we would make the run. Tuesday morning we tow the car to long track #1 (our first time there), for Dan to make his run. The starter signals him to go, the car sounded great, but when he shifted in to second, it just didn’t sound right. Over the PA system I hear, “car 564 138mph, pulled chute at two miles”. We zoomed to the return road to get the car, and when we got there, Dan told us that the car lost power when he shifted into second gear. We thought it might need new plugs. Once at the pits, after the hood was removed, we found salt clogging the secondary jets, and cleaned them out. We also found a brake problem, which we fixed. Too late for another run, the car was prepped for Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning with the car prepped, we tow it again to track #1, where Dan ran over 201mph, and secured his “A” license (which allows him to run as fast as 250mph). We all had a great time! Boogie worked hard teaching us about what had to be done with the car, and also had a chance to relax and visit with friends. Dan got all his SCTA licensing completed, and I got to crew on Boogie’s car and help Dan get licensed. Dan and I learned a lot. Next year is my turn to get licensed, can’t wait. Every car guy and gal should make it a priority to attend Bonneville Speed Week at least once in their life.
Go fast, Be safe. For some of you, this article may seem familiar, as it ran in this magazine in February of 2013. We were new at Bonneville in 2013, learning a lot then, and we still are! In 2014 and 2015 racing was cancelled at the Bonneville Salt Flats due to weather. It rained so bad
16

both years that it flooded the Salt Flats! Which is kind of ironic, because, during the ‘winter’ months there’s 18” of water covering the Bonneville Salt Flats, or Lake Bonneville, its other official name. In the spring, the water recedes, the salt is exposed, and a new racing surface is created! Isn’t nature great! In 2014 and 2015 we went to Wilmington, Ohio, to compete at The Ohio Mile. The Ohio Mile is sanctioned by the ECTA (East Coast Timing Association), they run a fine operation, and are a fine bunch of people. We did good at The Mile, Dan and I both set records, Dan in A/GMS and me in AA/GMS. It was a fun track. An old runway that used to be used by DHL. I really enjoyed racing there, Dan, Patti, and I had a good time, racing was fun. Sadly, Amazon came in, the ECTA had to leave, and when all was said and done, Amazon didn’t like the site, and left. For 2017 we’ve changed the class we are racing in, to A/FMS (A/ Fuel Modified Sports). Our old class was A/GMS (Gas). Nothing has to be done to the car, or any of the systems in the car. It all has to do with fully understanding the rule book, and using the rules to our greatest advantage. The record at Bonneville for A/FMS is 254.763MPH, while the record for A/GMS 259.829MPH. It wasn’t done for the 5mph either! Last year, we went to Bonneville, and we weren’t happy with the way the engine was performing. The problem with racing, is that you always want to go faster or quicker. So, for 2017, more changes are being made to the engine to make more power and torque! In 2016, two significant things happened to me at Bonneville. I became an official SCTA (Southern California Timing Association) Tech Inspector, and I received my SCTA “D” Class Racing License. I qualified at 145.267MPH on a maximum speed run of 149MPH! It was wonderful. It wasn’t even hard. I’m not bragging about my driving, I’m bragging about the car that Dan built! This 1954 Corvette that Dan built by hand does everything right! It stops, it goes, and it turns, just like a car should, and that’s what I mean when I say “it wasn’t even hard”, because I didn’t have to fight the car! Its exciting to be at Bonneville, its something else to have raced on the salt, and Dan and I have

experienced both. As a hot rodder, car builder, drag racer, you owe it to yourself to go to Bonneville at least once in your lifetime. You need to hear what a car sounds like to do almost 300mph at the 3 mile marker, on its way to the 5 mile marker. Or what a car under full acceleration, with big cubic inches, pulling with all its got, with a reputation of high speed, you hear that very deep throaty roar of a big block, the announcer says: two miles, two hundred fifty one miles per hour! Then suddenly, silence, the announcer says: car 3619 chute, leaving the course under his own power. Obviously something went wrong, we’ll hear about it later. But no matter how fast or slow, car, truck, or motorcycle, all of us who compete at Bonneville hope that everybody sets new records. Oh, and the salt, yes it’s the same salt you have at you table! Speed week: August 12-18 2017 Bonneville Land Speed Racing is a unique sport that consists of very determined people who drive hot rods, roadsters, belly tankers, lakesters, motorcycles, streamliners, and even diesel trucks to "shoot the salt" in a simple quest to have their name added to the list of many record holders. Many years ago, the Bonneville Nationals Inc. (BNI) was formed. It's main focus would be to produce the annual "Bonneville Speed Week". The BNI hosts a spectacular week of racing each year in August, which is the highlight event of the LSR season. Speed Week consists of six days of racing (Sat - Fri), weather and conditions permitting. Entrants come from all over the world to participate in the week long event. Spectators are allowed to walk through the pits, view the vehicles, and talk to the drivers and crew members. Public parking is south of the pit area, on the west side of the race track, outside the cones. Be sure to bring a hat, dark glasses, sunscreen and shade from the sun. Don't forget a camera with lots of film/memory/tapes, because you will want to remember everything you see and hear. Binoculars are also a great idea since the race vehicles are at least 1/4 mile away as they travel down the course. HELPFUL HINTS FOR SPECTATORS The Bonneville Speedway is located approximately 88 miles west of Salt Lake City, UT right off Interstate 80. Wendover is the closest town to the salt flats for accommodations, food, casinos & night life. The spectacular scenery and racing conditions at Bonneville make it one of the most popular areas in the world for speed. Transportation from Salt Lake City to Wendover is available from downtown Salt Lake at the Red Lion Hotel: Lebus 1-800-366-0288 LeBus Web Site Speed Week consists of seven days of racing in August and World Final is four days of racing in October. ALL vehicles are allowed to run every day, weather and conditions permitting. There are no special days for motorcycles or cars, etc. There is no camping ON the salt. EVERYONE must exit the salt at dusk. Private campgrounds and hookups are available in nearby Wendover. Free camping on BLM land West of the salt near bend of the road. You can purchase entry passes daily/weekly at the entrance to the salt. Spectators are allowed to walk through the pits, view the vehicles, and talk to the drivers and crew members. Public parking is south of the pit area, on the west side of the race track, outside of the cones. Be sure to bring a hat, and shade from the sun. If you intend to set up a 'semi-permanent' spectator area, you must secure a tarp as a floor covering on the salt. Don’t forget your camera and bring lots of film, because you will want to remember everything you see. Binoculars are also a great idea since the race vehicles are at least 1/4 mile away as they travel down the course. There will be vendors located on the salt for food, refreshments, eyewear, sunscreen & much more. Hotel and accommodation information is available through the Wendover Tourism and Convention Bureau, 1-775-664-3138 or Toll Free 1-866-299-2489. Please pick up ALL of your trash and take it with you — everyday. There will be dumpsters provided near the pit area. The colors, excitement, people and smells are some of the reasons we race addicts return to the salt, year after year. Better known as "Salt Fever." CATCH IT
From Reflections The official monthly newsletter of the
Antique Automobile and Engine Club of MS. June 2017 The following article was provided by Mark. It’s copied from the Classic Car Restoration Club’s web site. ENGINE VACUUM TROUBLESHOOTING Years ago, A good friend introduced me to using a vacuum gauge to diagnose engine problems, in-fact it was often the first tool he would reach for when confronted with a poorly running engine. I’ll admit to being a little skeptical at first, but over the years I have become convinced that engine vacuum is a great source for information in helping diagnose problems inside the engine. Of course, high-performance engines with lopey camshafts often make little vacuum but even then the vacuum gauge can give you insights to the inner workings of your engine. Simply put, the vacuum gauge has proven itself time and time again to be an invaluable tool in troubleshooting engine problems. The key to using a vacuum gauge to diagnose engine problems is to understand exactly what the gauge is telling you. When armed with this knowledge you’ll be able to quickly discern between simple tuning issues to potentially more severe mechanical problems. Good quality vacuum testing gauges are available at most auto parts stores and online resources, and are relatively inexpensive. Before beginning any vacuum testing, a visual inspection should be made of the entire vacuum system. Check all hoses, hose connections, and all open ports on carburetors and intake manifold are plugged (note: some cars also have vacuum operated heat/ac controls). To get started, hook the vacuum gauge to an intake manifold vacuum source. Manufacturers install ports on their manifolds for lots of different reasons: Brake Booster, PCV tube, EGR Switch, A/ C vents, etc. You simply need to find one small enough for the vacuum gauge line to slide onto firmly. This is also done with a tee on an existing line or pulling a line and connecting it direct (for example, the vacuum line to the transmission can be used). Start your engine and allow it to come up to operating temperature before testing. COMMON VACUUM TEST RESULTS: Normal Engine: On most engines, accelerate to around 2000 rpm and then quickly release the throttle. The engine should snap right back to a steady 17- 21″hg vacuum. Steady low between 5-10″hg vacuum: This indicates that the engine has a leak in the intake manifold or the intake gasket. Steady low between 10-15″hg vacuum: This reading indicates late valve timing. There’s a chance the vehicle has jumped timing. Check the timing belt or chain depending on the application. Steady low between 15-18″hg vacuum: This low reading indicates retarded ignition timing. Advance the timing on the distributor to correct this problem, and recheck vacuum. Fluctuating Needle: A fluctuating needle indicates there’s a problem with a valve or a there’s an engine misfire. Needle drops during acceleration: If the needle drops steady during acceleration there’s a restriction in the exhaust or intake. This is typically due to a clogged muffler or exhaust system.

The term was first used by Chrysler in the 1920s As they where introduced as a brand on August 1, 1937. Happy 80th Anniversary MOPAR. Its easy to agree the MOPAR brand has been on quite a journey over the last eight decades. MOPAR parts are original equipment manufactured parts for all Chrysler vehicles. The name came from the combination of the two words.......... Motor and Parts. The first product on the market in the early 30's was antifreeze. (bet ya didn't know that?!?!) Following the antifreeze was wiring harnesses, radio parts, simple engine parts, and more. They shifted in the 40's to produce weapons, engines, and vehicles for WWII. In 1953 they opened its sprawling MOPAR Parts Depot in Centerline, MI... which is still open today. In order to expand the name and the many products they had to offer at this point and time, MOPAR branches' started training programs for motor technicians. Shortly after that is when the MOPAR Madness really started picking up a following. By this time, racing and raw power was the main expectation out of cars. In order to prove their brand, MOPAR started sponsoring race teams and building powerful race cars and teams. One team they sponsored was run by Don Garlits, who later won several NHRA championships. Along with the most successful team called Sox and Martin, well known in the drag racing community. Fans staring noticing how MOPAR was turning out to be a good, trust worthy brand for performance parts. The MOPAR Madness was in full swing a this point and time. And the Chrysler slogan "Win on Sunday... sale on Monday" was born. As far as what I can gather, being around a few MOPAR fans myself, this MOPAR madness is not a isolated affair. During the past year I have met so many different people that fall into the MOPAR Madness group easily. With other companies pushing to overtake the car industry. MOPAR had to create something unforgettable and unbeatable. Their solution was the creation of the HEMI engine. The first generations of Hemi engines were produced in 1953. NASCAR found it's way to jump on the MOPAR band wagon. Dominating the Nascar circuit, with the introduction of the Hemi engine, with Richard Petty in the early 50's. Petty was the first NASCAR driver to break 200 mph with the Daytona & Super Bird wing cars. Racing fans were looking at the MOPAR brand name. MOPAR started manufacturing muscle cars like the Dodge Dart, the Barracuda, GTX, Charger, and the Challenger. In 1987 the MOPAR portfolio grew with the addition of the Jeep brand. MOPAR also introduced many new technologies into their collection. They went on to start a training program in the spring of 1990... MOPAR Collage Automotive Program (CAP) That is still produces some of the best technicians today. MOPAR has introduced several limited edition vehicles over the past 80 years and they strive on releasing a new limited edition every year. What's your favorite?

Like anything, fans find a passion for, that all depends on who you ask! After seeing MOPAR Madness up close and personal this past year the history has unfolded in front of my eyes. Its simply something I'll always be surprised by. Whether its in foothills of the Kentucky mountains or a swamp in Florida, I'm always surprised at what's hidden under a palm tree in 3 foot of sand, or covered with 4 feet of kudzu in the middle of cow pasture. Like little hidden treasures put away for a rainy day! I understand the value of these little jewels and the love people have for a Petty Blue Super Bird, 6 Pack Super Bee, or my favorite the plum crazy purple Cuda. On all of the adventures I get to take, I'm always learning and finding new passion in something that has a following of its own. Just like those people that understand the feeling you get when you slide into any drag car. For me it was the feeling I got as I slid into the seat of a 1967 440 Coronet and hit the drag strip. Or my first true burn out on a race track. My adrenaline was on high alert. My seatbelt was as tight as my helmet. Nothing official, just a fun run. (That feeling reminds me of a roller coaster ride as a child.) By the time we hit mid track I was in full shock mode. Screaming louder then the motor running at 120 mph. Crossing the finish line with high fives and a few hell yeah's !! I felt alive and all I could think of was....can we do it again! You can’t let any drag car sit up for long and chance to open it up and hit the track is a good day. This run down the track helped me to understand and respect the Mopar Madness. It's opened my mind to the way I look at any drag car. Knowing the history of MOPAR alone has helped me to respect it like so many others do. With such a growing group of car enthusiastic people young and old. Rebuilding, restoring or buying them off the show room floor. MOPAR... American made and still running schools to further educate people, makes a brand like Mopar something to be proud of. Hopefully MOPAR will continue to produce high-end parts and keep thinking of new ways to change the game in the car world. So the next generations to come can enjoy what they have bought to so many people over the years. Allowing the MOPAR MADENSS to be what it set out to become over 80 years ago! ……. XOXO

6th Annual Burning Up The Beaches Friday May 5, I headed out on I-10 for Destin, FL and one of my favorite car shows of the year…Burning Up The Beaches! Any time you head to the beaches in Florida it’s always exciting. Destin is only about 180 miles from Gulfport but about 5 hours when pulling a 7,000 pound trailer. I arrived in Destin late afternoon and pulled into Destin Commons. Destin Commons has to be one of the nicest shopping centers I’ve ever been to. One of my friends called it Disney-like and I have to agree, what a great place to have a car show. The property guys were awesome, making sure I had my electrical needs met and the cords covered for pedestrian traffic. Already the site was busy with vendors and clubs getting their spots ready. (Friday the cruisers are all out hitting their stops.) Once the Hot Rod Show trailer was set up I headed to check in to the Ramada Inn on the beach in Fort Walton Beach. I love this hotel, it’s older but very nice and this is the place that has the mountain waterfall that many of you have seen the video of on the Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show Facebook site, plus it is pet friendly. Maxie my late wife’s Yorkie, she travels with me always, so I have to have a pet friendly hotel. Sometimes I don’t get to stay in the grand places a lot of the shows would have for me, but it’s a burden I don’t mind carrying to have my little buddy with me. After checking in, getting my room setup and a shower I headed to the Friday night party at The Gulf on Okaloosa Island, less than a mile from my hotel. The theme of the party was The Beach Boys. It was an outside gig on a beautiful lawn overlooking the bay. Good music, good fellowship and good food. It was a great setting. I turned in early for what I knew was going to be a long day on Saturday. I was up at 5 am Saturday morning, showered and out the door. Three things I have to have on the way to a show are…breakfast, ice (I had already found one of those little ice houses) and a thermos of black coffee, my Red Bull was already in the Hot Rod Show trailer. Carol Hart, my assistant met me at the trailer and an hour later we were ready to go. I could already tell this year’s show was a lot bigger as the cars started pouring in. This is the 6th year for Burning Up The Beaches and all the money raised goes to a great cause, Arc of the Emerald Coast. This group was founded in the 1950’s by parents of mentally and physically handicapped children. This group has grown incredibly over the years and focuses on making life better for these people, enabling them to live, work and play as we do and to help them become as independent as possible. Burning Up The Beaches is just one event out of the many Arc of the Emerald Coast does each year. They focus on Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, Williams Syndrome and sensory impairments. The work they do is incredible. Plus it’s a great group of people to hang out with because they also know how to have fun. The car show was awesome, from 260 cars in 2016 to a whopping 328 in 2017. Our Mega 50/50 doubled this year to $4,690. There was also Slot Car Racing and Valve Cover Racing. The weather was beautiful and the spectators came by the hundreds. After the car show came the Cash Drawdown, a free dinner and live music right there in Destin Commons, a truly great day. During the week leading up to the show, I had found an old friend on Facebook, a girl in Dothan, AL that I had had a crush on all my life, but the time was never right for us. When she found out I was going to be in Destin for the show, she suggested that I come up to see her after the show. So I checked out of the hotel, (gave up another night on the beach) and headed to Dothan as soon as the car show was over and I got packed up. It was great catching up with an old friend! After breakfast the next morning I headed for home. Driving back Sunday on I-10 I had a chance to think about how incredible the weekend truly was. You never know when you hit the road

A Story of Hard Work and Innovation If you are anywhere close to my age you are familiar with the era of the Drive-In Theatre and the rows of posts with speakers. I am speaking of the box on a wire that you placed onto your window or inside your car, allowing you to hear the movie on the big screen. Perhaps you were not there to watch the movie, but were only there to steam up the windows. In either event, you know what I am referring to. Chances are that one or more of those speakers were manufactured and sold by Projected Sound. Tom Hilligoss was the CEO of Projected Sound, and the salesman that put the company in business. He was the man that took the Drive-In Movie speaker and engineered innovations that made great improvements to its' sound and durability. Tom was also the man who travelled the country selling his speakers. Tom would hear the complaints of the theatre owners first hand, then drive back to the shop and explain what improvements needed to be made. Tom Hilligoss was the moving force of Projected Sound. In 1949 an Indianapolis service station owner, Forest Oscar Hilligoss, called "Hilly" by his friends, decided he could build a better Drive-In Theater. He felt the construction of the screens he had seen needed improvement. Hilly did research in the Public Library and learned how to engineer a better screen design. Up until that point, the motion picture screens had been made with telephone poles, tied together in various fashion. Hilly designed a structure with welded steel that was a major improvement. One day, Hilly took son Tom on a ride to Seelyville, Indiana. They went to a large field outside of town. Hilly told Tom that he was going to build a Drive-In Theater on that plot of ground with a screen superstructure of his own superior design. He did just that. The Corral Drive-In Theater, opened in 1950 in Seelyville, Indiana. Tom Hilligoss' father and family were in the Theater business. In the broad sense the Drive-In Theatre provided to its' patrons a motion picture and sound. The theatre owners' desire was to provide the best picture with the highest quality sound. The first speakers available had a tinny or raspy sound with poor volume controls. This was due to the design of the casings and the attempts by the early manufacturers to make their designs tamperproof. Hilly Hilligoss partnered with a man who owned 5 Drive-In Theaters. His name was Trueman Rembusch. The partnership was formed with the idea of designing a better speaker. They designed a venturi grille to produce maximum fidelity. Their design made a 4 inch speaker sound like a six inch speaker. Their designs included a grille to prevent patrons from damaging the speakers with sucker sticks. Projected Sound offered an unusually wide range of speaker and junction box options and available in over 20,000 combinations. Tom Hilligoss was given the job of convincing theaters that already had a full complement of speakers to change from their original speakers to Projected Sound speakers. This was a hard sell. It is always tough to convince an owner who is trying to make a profit, that your product will save them money over time. Tom would talk to the Drive-In owners, find out what problems they had, then take that information back to the shop and figure out a way to improve the product to address the issues. The major problem
22
JULY 2017
was that the owners had accepted speaker repairs as normal, costly, everyday maintenance. Tom convinced them that all those cones that last only one or two years, frozen, spotty, or worn out controls, rotted or ruptured cords or cord leads, and screws and nuts that could not be removed at repair time, had been addressed in the manufacture of the Projected Sound speaker, and that they could cut their costs of maintenance. One of the innovations put an end to costly re-stripping and re-lugging. Problem: rubber insulation on wiring hardened, flaked off, or shorted out the speakers. Solution: Projected Sound used a grade of neoprene insulation that stayed strong and supple and was long lasting. No rubber insulation and all for the same cost. All of Projected Sound controls were made of special materials, salt spray tested to "Navy Specifications". Spotty or frozen controls were a thing of the past. In the first five years of operation Projected Sound speakers went from the bottom to the top in sales. Sales were strong and by 1967 Projected Sound moved to a new building in Plainfield, Indiana and now employed 45 people. They could build and warehouse enough stock from Fall until Spring (when the Drive-Ins shut down for winter) to satisfy sales during the summer months. Sales started to drop off in the 1980's, though. Drive-Ins no longer held their appeal. The land they were sitting on became so valuable that it was more worthwhile to sell than to operate a movie theater. What theaters remained switched over to broadcasting through the car radio. As a side note, the car radio had the capability to do this early on, but the tube type radios and six volt systems did not have the capacity to perform long enough to last through a movie. So the number of Drive-In Movie Theaters has dwindled dramatically. You really have to hunt to find a facility where you can watch the children playing on the playground as the "dancing hot dog" moves across the screen. I don't know where the kids go to safely steam up the car windows anymore. I asked Uncle Ezra for a good old saying about drive-in movies. He didn't know any, but did tell me this joke. A blonde and her boyfriend were making out in the front seat of the car, at the drivein theater. Her boyfriend says, "Hey baby, do you want to get in the back seat?" She said, "No, I wanna stay up here with you!"

The new Member this month is Joe Scarborough of Gulfport and he drives a 1969 Chevy SS. Joe and his wife enjoy cruise-in and going to Shows. Jerry does so much for the Cruisers, he does inspection on vehicles make sure everything is safe . This picture is at the Gnat Nationals with Sylvia Scarborough.
The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year.

Lessons You Learn From a Senior Dog By Candy Cocktail
Dedicated to my baby girl, Sugar, who completely changed my life and made me a better person! I will miss her everyday until I see my little angel again.
In May, I lost my tiny little best friend, Sugar. A sweet 13 & 1/2 year old Yorkshire terrier who was my furry daughter. I loved being a Yorkie mom to the little angel that heaven let me borrow. Of course a great sadness ensued at her loss. Yet at the same time, I have spent so much of the past month reflecting on how much she taught me, how she changed my life, showed my how to be a mommy, made me a better prints on my heart that will never
person and opened my heart, leaving paw fade away. As with any pet, animals can open our eyes to details we failed to notice before they touched our lives. They can make us appreciate so many small things we managed to overlook and in doing so, can teach us valuable lessons about life. Any pet, at any age, can do just that. Although I believe there is something special about seeing life through the aging eyes of a senior dog. Below is a list of life lessons we can all implement to live better lives. - Be excited for each new day!! Of all the lessons I learned, this one has stuck with me the most. Get excited about all the wonderful possibilities each new day can hold. - Smile! I believe that unlike us, dogs smile with their whole bodies; a happiness that spreads throughout, from a vigorously wagging tail to a prancing body and a tongue hanging out of a happy, panting mouth. Make sure to always smile. Smile when your heart is breaking, even though you are aching. - Realize how fleeting life is. Life is short and God willing, your pet pal will not typically live as long as you. You will likely see them pass on before you do. Although their precious time is shorter than ours, it can be a reminder to appreciate those you love the most while you still have the opportunity to. Spend time with them and make the most of your brief time. - Be patient. Even as a puppy, you train your dog just like any youngster, from manners to tricks to potty training. Especially as a dog grows older, it needs more care and in turn, more patience. You learn how to take care of someone other than yourself. If you are a good pet parent, under most circumstances you will have your fur baby until the end of their life, despite health issues that might require more time and money. You do these things for your pet out of love, the incredible love you have for this kind little creature. - A hug or kiss (or a lick from your pooch) can make it all seem better. - Love unconditionally. Like the dog photo of the child hugging his dog that reads I will love you all my life; pets do indeed! They love you all day, every day, no matter what, they are there. After they are gone, you not only miss them, but you miss their love. Their true, complete, comforting, unconditional, pure love that is unlike any other kind of love. The love from a furry companion is miraculous and exceptional. Why not try to love unconditionally. - Be selfless. As the saying goes, "a dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself." Be unselfish and love others, maybe even find a person or persons to love more than you love yourself. Having a pet is like a child, a creature that brings you happiness in caring for it unselfishly. The responsibility to take care of your pet everyday; to feed, brush, comfort and sit with when they are sick. You do special things for those you love, furry or not, because it makes them happy, such as a car ride, where making them happy made you happy. Even though sometimes I was tired and may not have felt like getting up, I had to take care of my baby. It is all part of being a pet parent and it was worth every single second; every
second of worry when there was a health issue and every second of spending money that I did not have when something happened because that is just what you do as a pet parent, loving unselfishly. - Be happy no matter what; even if you were living in a car and lost almost everything you own, it is not a reason to give up hope or feel blue. - Sometimes someone who is down just needs someone to be there and listen, even if they failed to realize it. - Learn how to truly take care of someone else, not because you are getting anything out of it, but because you do it out of love; the caring and immense love you have for he or she. At the end of senior dog's life they need extra care. You have to make sure they drink enough, take their different medications (sometimes several medicines may be given throughout the day that you will need to be home to give and make time for), take to more vet appointments which are not cheap because they may need more medical care or laser treatments for narrowing back disks, but you enjoy taking care of them. Even picking up their poop, you do not mind because it is just what you do when you love a dog. A dog's love

(and licks) can give happiness and comfort you when everything else around you seemed to be going wrong. - Rotting teeth and gray whiskers have never looked better! The look is uniquely adorable! - Take pleasure in simple things: find the joy in feeling the wind on your face, car rides, sunshine, snuggling under clean laundry hot out of the dryer and cuddling with your favorite person or persons. One of the things that made Sugar happiest was curling up on hot towels; if only we could be so happy over such minute details. - Age is just a number; Even when you are old and unable to get up the stairs the way you used to bolt down them, still find joy in the simple things. At any age you can appreciate the car ride, time with those you love, and crawling into a snuggly bed at night. It is unfortunate the way in which dogs age so fast; how one year in our time is the equivalent of seven in dog years. You see your dog progress through life and old age at such a rapid rate it is frightening how fast time goes; then one day you look down and see those brown eyes start to turn a foggy bluish color from cataracts, little grey hairs increasing around their face and snout, and your once agile puppy's body is standing differently than it used to, hunched and bow legged from arthritis and one day you suddenly realize your baby got old. - Forgive and forget. Possibly because they are energetic and live shorter lives than us, dogs move on faster than people. Nothing keeps them down; they forget about life's problems and live in the moment, enjoying every second of it. - Adapt; when things change, just go with it the way dogs do. All the time you hear of dogs losing a leg or losing their eyesight, and how they adapt. They manage to get around, running just as fast as dogs on 4 legs. Be like a senior dog and adapt, not letting anything stop you from persevering. - At the end of the day, all that matters is the good. - You worry about your dog just like a pet parent and best friend should; calling into work to rush them to the vet when they are sick, staying up late with worry, sitting next to your pet when he or she is sick, being sure to give them the comfort that goes with knowing you are right there, making sure they take their medicine each day, (an ever increasing number of different medications as they age), slowly becoming the best parent that your fur baby deserves. - Do not wait to have treats; tomorrow is not guaranteed. - Never judge others. A dog would never judge you when you did something wrong. A sweet panting face super excited to see you no matter how rough you looked, when you were not feeling your best because it seemed like people or the cruel world had done you wrong, it all seemed like it was going to be alright. That is the comfort a dog can give its human. Instead of judging, dogs love almost everyone. That is why there are several successful dog training programs in prisons now. Prisoners find a friend in dogs that only judge the inmates for who they are on the inside. The dogs could care less what mistakes were made that caused the inmates to end up in prison. Cloudy, cataract eyes can still see you better than you see yourself. They see who you are and know just what you need. Just like your relationship with your closest family member or friend, sometimes you do not even need to talk to know what he or she is feeling. - True love never lessens. In the past weeks, I have come up with my own theory on dogs; Dogs are angels that God loans us for a short time, to bring us comfort during the difficult times and joy every day. God gives us dogs to borrow during our time here. I also think God gave us dogs so we could truly feel the comfort of his unconditional love while we are on this earth. Because having a dog is feeling complete, unconditional, forever love. "Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer." - Dean Koontz I believe that not all people truly understand the love between man and animal. For some it is "just an animal," negating the clever smartness, the caring friendship and the unconditional love that you have for your pet and particularly that your pet has for you. An unbreakable bond that even in death, is not lessened. In fact it is one of life's greatest gifts, to be blessed with the love of a pet and learn from a dog how to truly live life. Make no milk bones about it, these life lessons can remind you how to live better every day. Wake up excited for what the new day will bring; It just might be the best day of your life.

From time to time people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or “That’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent, or costs involved for “Just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “Just a dog.” Many hours have passed with my only company being “Just a dog,” and not once have I felt slighted. Some of my saddest moments were brought about by “Just a dog.” In those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “Just a dog” provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day. If you, too, think it’s “Just a dog,” you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “Just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. For me and folks like me, it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday people can understand it’s not “Just the dog.” It’s the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “Just a man” or “Just a woman.”

Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana is the source many memories for me. As a kid, my dad took me sailing on the Lake. My high school friends and I loved to hang out and picnic and swim there in the summer and I spent many nights parked along its seawall. I spent hours on end at Pontchartrain Beach, the amusement park that used to be, with my friends riding rides and having fun. The New Canal Basin Lighthouse, on the south bank of the Lake, has always been special and became more so when Charlie and I were the first people ever married there. We even sailed off into the sunset on the Lake after our ceremony. So, the idea of holding a fundraiser to help preserve the Lake is one that I wholeheartedly appreciate and support. Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly “to restore and preserve the Pontchartrain Basin for the benefit of this and future generations.” Spending the day on the Lake’s south shoreline, certainly reminded everyone of how beautiful the Lake is and what a priceless asset it is to the area and to Louisiana. For more information on Save our Lake, check out their website at SaveOurLake.org. On Saturday, May 27, 2017, more than 358 cars registered and came out for the 15th Annual Back to the Beach Car Show. The event, hosted by the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and sponsored in part by Custom Cruisers has grown into one of the largest shows in the New Orleans area and, having postponed one week due to inclement weather, was blessed with lots of sunshine and an incredible turnout. Cars, trucks and even some motorcycles of every description filled parking areas along Lakeshore Drive – Antiques, Classics, Custom Cars, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Rat Rods. Even one of the food truck vendors sold crepes from a gorgeous 1936 Ford food truck which shone brightly with stainless steel and chrome.

Adamec Harley Davidson of Orange Park Pre 87 Rockabilly Car Show Story & Photos by: Brian Barsema June 3 , 2017 hosted by the Callahan Cruisers Car Club Welcome to North Florida in summer the car shows slow down as the heat rises and shows in Florida get smaller in size. Everyone has their own taste in shows, cars, and fun. I personally love anything with rides of all ages but sometimes it nice to have antiques, rat rods, hot rods only or a theme to your show. This show was all about Rockabilly and a retro feel. One hundred cars packed the Orange Park Adamec Harley brought a refreshing change of environment. Beau and the Burners rocked out classic rock and roll, keeping the theme rolling all day. Pinned Up Boutique and Pin-Up Miami hosted a pinup contest that drew a large unique crowd. The Contest drew in 19 pinups from across Florida and many more in the crowd to crown 2017 Miss Callahan Cruiser. Chrissy Doll Pin Up took home the title of Miss. Callahan Cruiser 2017. We wish Ms. Pin-Up the best of luck as she prepares to represent Florida in the Miss Viva East Darling Dame Contest. This show was a refreshing change of pace. Pin strippers, rock and roll classics, pinup contest, handmade trophies, and kids custom wagon/ pedal car contest made sure everyone at the show was busy and lost track of the heat from the summer storms. I had so much fun. Driving my 1977 Corvette to the show with pedal car strapped to the back for the kids is rare for to do but so completely worth it. At the end of day, I know soon I will be attending more of these themed shows and look forward to attending more as we begin going to shows down in Central Florida.

Hi Jimbo! I built this MOON Sportster with help from MOON Sweden and Biltwell inc USA. I hope you like it and if you would like to feature it in your great Magazine, I will send you photos and the building info! Ride hard Ride safe Peter/Sweden Hello Peter, nice to hear from you again. You built another Kool Bike. I remember featuring your wife's trike, your daughters bobber, and you last bike a few years ago. Great to see you are still building and riding. I would like to feature your new bike build in the magazine, so send me the information on the Bike……. Jimbo
MOON Bike Building story. My name is Peter Ström and I am 54 years old from Stockholm, Sweden. I have a few bike-builds behind me – I built my wife’s FXR trike, a Sportster chopper for myself, and a Sportster bobber with a lot of engraving on for my daughter. Every one of them have been well appreciated and featured in a number of magazines around the world. With this build I wanted a Drag racing/Hot Rod style! So it was obvious to ask Håkan at MOON Sweden for help with parts. Because let’s face it, what’s more associate with Drag racing and Hot Rods than MOON. The whole bike is built around the legendary Aluminium oil tank from MOON. I started the project with an original ‘ 03Sportster frame, but instead of following everyone else and make it ridged in the back, I wanted to keep the shocks to have that old school look. The whole front frame was cut away, the back frame I shorted 2” and the middle frame was made so the MOON oil tank fit in. A new front frame got build from under the front motor mount to the lowered back frame, everything to get a more fluid and strait line. The measures of the bike is 3” up, 39 degree rake, the fork is 10” over with a 5 degrees triple tree. Instead of a lot of MOON-

builds that is all MOON-yellow I wanted the same effect as the oil tank – brushed aluminium! so that started the hunt of aluminium parts. The Gas tank is a stretched Sportster aluminium tank from Easy Rider Japan, the back fender is a Tsunami from Lowbrows. The front fairing is from Hippie Killer Garage that needed a lot of grinding because of the bad quality of the casting. Everything got wet-sanded to get the brushed look. The idea of the paint I got from the back of the box that some of the MOON parts come in. To get the racing style stronger and put some MOON-yellow on I decided to make two yellow stripes all the way through the bike that makes a frame for the Mooneyes logos in the middle, the rest is brushed aluminium with clear coat. The wheel is original old 16 – 19” Mag wheels from the 80’s. The centre got painted in satin black and the edges were grinded to get that brushed look and aluminium sprocket in the back. The brake and clutch leavers are from a ‘06 Sportster. The electricity bottoms are removed and replaced with LC-fabrication “Switch housing delete” for a cleaner look !! The brake master cylinder cap is from the MOON, the front brake is from a ‘06 Sportster. To make the front brake fit the fork I had to re-weld the brackets. The Brake discs are from DNA with a black centre. Frame, swingarm, fork and all the parts that arn’t brushed or yellow, are powder coated in satin black. I don’t think that there is anything on the bike that is chromed! I got a lot of help from is “Otto” from Biltwell inc USA. The saddle, handlebar, rises, the gas handle, cap for CV and the foot pegs came from Biltwell. Everything was extremely high quality and style. The engine is a ‘03 Sportster crank case, with Hammer performance 1250 cc cylinders and hi comp pistons. The heads are ‘06 Sportster XB that are made to breathe easier, cams are from Hammer Performance, The clutch is EMF auto clutch with Kevlar plates! This makes the shifting really fast!! You only get on the throttle extremely little and shift!! You don’t need to use the clutch handle! You just shift then full throttle again!! Gear box is 5 speed, The engine breathes thru a 2-1 Screaming Eagle exhaust, It makes about little over 100hp on the back tire! Soon I will try it on a dragracing strip in the class of “Bracket” to see !! keep Your fingers crossed ;-) Ride hard Ride safe Peter/Sweden
