Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo I never mean to put things off to the last minute but it seems that time passes by so fast the next thing you know it’s the preverbal last minute. Valentine's day could have fallen into that category.. I had all the romantic plans running around in my head but when the day came, the fancy dinner was a pizza at a local pizza joint, and my sweetheart gave me two dozen homemade chocolate chip cookies (my favorite). Best date ever!! I was happy to finally get a little road time in. Chance to visit a few friends I hadn't seen in awhile and I even made it to a show. Mardi Gras is over and the car shows will start up. There are so many to choose from, as you will see in this months magazine. Something New to the Atomic Blast this year is the Autocross. One car/ truck going down the track at-a-time, swerving to miss traffic cones placed along the track. At the end you will have to make a u-turn and make the return run... Ya’ don’t have to go fast but the fastest one will win!!! If this year is going to be the first Atomic Blast you have attended, it will be an experience you won’t forget. Well I’m excited anyway… Next on my list is about a cool retro gas station opening, well reopening. Bayou View service station.. the station has been there since the 50’s but over the years it sort of gotten forgotten. A new owner, a new crew and a major facelift gives this Full Service Station genuine hang-out status. And they ONLY have REAL GAS. Not the government type...but the real stuff. Every Thursday is Gas-Nite Cruise-in so stop by and top off for the weekend. Now here is a email I got and took the time to watch the videos about their product. You may want to give DMW a call to really make your ride stand out.. Hello Jimbo, I am writing to inform you of a new company recently established in Gulfport, Ms. at 9465 Creosote Rd, Unit K, next to Wolfpack Fitness. DMW (Dip-My-Whip) specializes in Plasti-Dip application for vehicles. Plasti-Dip is a paint like substance that is sprayed onto the vehicle through a professional atomizing paint spray gun and cures into a rubber, plastic
This Month Miss Emelia Jackson is our March centerfold. (page 40-41). The 1939 Ford “Red Devil” Gasser is the handy work of Dan Tackett. Emelia leads a life of regimented discipline, exercise, and diet. Emelia expresses herself in songs written with deep emotions. “Music, as far back as I can remember, seemed to be the one thing I turned to when I was happy, sad, confused, hurt or scared.” “I was different from everyone else in my family but I felt loved from my loyal mother and even though I was too young to understand the Lord and what he truly meant to my life, he has always been my guiding light. As I grew and the years went by, I traveled and put myself into life head first. I knew there was more to my world than what I was being shown and I wanted more. I wanted to feel like I was ‘that somebody’ my mom and the Lord believed me to be.” More on page 16 wrap material. The Plasti-Dip sprays directly over the original paint so it does not require any sanding or modification to the stock paint. Very little masking or prepping is also required because the Plasti-Dip can be peeled off from the windows, trim, etc, once complete with the standard 6 coat application. Plasti-Dip has been around for a long time, but just as recent as 2010 has it been commercialized for automobile application. There are now many colors to choose from, and standard paint pearls can also be added to the clear Plasti-Dip solution to imitate original factory paint colors from GM, Ford, etc. The beauty of Plasti-Dip is that it can be removed, with some effort, when you would like to revert back to the original stock paint job. Simply create a tear in the Plasti-Dip wrap with your thumb nail or a sharp object and begin to pull it away from the vehicle. Since the PlastiDip is 6 coats thick, it peels off the vehicle very easily, like plastic wrap, with no damage to the paint underneath. It is an excellent layer of protection for your original paint. Now that you have some background information on Plasti-Dip, I will tell you a little bit about myself and why I decided to open this business and bring Plasti-Dip to the Gulf Coast. Being an automobile enthusiast, I have always had a love for cars and customizing in particular. I have had several Mustangs, Camaros, and now a Plasti-Dip wrapped Corvette in Matte black. I am currently in the Air Force, 17 years, and now serving as the regional Officer Recruiter covering the territory of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Knowing the many benefits of Plasti-Dip, and seeing its growth and popularity on the West Coast and East Coast, I noticed that it had not yet made its way down South and in particular, the Gulf Coast. Recognizing this opportunity, I decided to establish the gulf coasts first Plasti-Dip installer business and claim the title as first to market with a new product. Myself along with my Technician, Ryan Stewart, have been in business for one month to date. We have already wrapped a few vehicles, and have several more lined up for the coming

weeks. So far, our marketing campaign has garnered a positive response and we could not be more pleased. Plasti-Dip is a product that sells itself once a customer is properly educated on its benefits. It is 50% less expensive than a vinyl wrap, and 80% less expensive than a brand new custom paint job. For those who do not have the means, or the desire, to pay 2-3 thousand dollars for paint or vinyl can now opt for a Plasti-Dip wrap and obtain the exact same benefits. Paint is permanent, and vinyl can be very difficult to remove. Plasti-Dip can be either permanent (lasts 3 years or longer) or temporary, so having that flexibility is a great advantage. Many people on the West Coast lease vehicles and leased vehicles cannot be permanently modified. Plasti-Dip wraps are very popular with customers who lease because the Plasti-Dip can be peeled before turning the lease back in, or upgrading. Plasti-Dip has come a long way in the past few years and I see it being around for a long time, simply because it is a good product and it is affordable to the masses. People also like to have options, especially when it comes to expensive services and they can obtain similar quality for a substantial discount. Hopefully I have shared enough information with you to qualify for a potential article in your magazine. I truly feel Plasti-Dip is an excellent option and can save people within the community a great deal of money if they opt for a Plasti-Dip wrap as opposed to new paint or vinyl on their daily driver, or even their hot rod! Hey! Check this out. The similarities between a baby and a very elderly person are ….. When babies come into the world, they have no teeth. When we become very elderly, we become toothless and our dentures don't fit. A newborn has little to no hair. A very elderly person has little to no hair. A baby drools at the mouth a lot. An elderly person drools at the mouth a lot. A baby needs a lot of sleep. An elderly person needs a lot of sleep. A baby must wear a diaper. An elderly person must wear a diaper. A baby can only nurse or eat soft foods out of a jar. An elderly person's main diet is oatmeal and puddin. A newborn cannot walk. An elderly person must use a walker or be wheeled around. It seems the only difference between the two is ninety to a hundred years. See what you have to look forward to. I know this dude who had a really bad experience in divorce court. Would you believe the judge now orders him to make payments to a women he doesn't even like anymore? So he vowed to never end up in court like that again. He said next time he will go find a women he doesn't like and just go buy her a real nice house! Pretty far out, huh? Till next time---keep it hangin loose Cuz---just be Cuz…….
Jimbo, The Vancleave Merchants Association will host the 10th Annual Pebble Bluff Creek Car Show on Saturday, April 25th on the Vancleave High School Grounds. Each year we have seen the event grow and look forward to seeing wonderful vehicles from past years and new projects that have come to fruition. The event is a fund raiser for the Vancleave First Responders which cover over 200 square miles. Our firefighters and their families attend and the truck and crew will be available to shake hands and thanked for their service to our community. Well I’m runnin’ out of room and I’d like to close with this thought from my Joel Osteen book if inspiration…(Your Best Life) “Learn to speak God’s favor over every area of your life. Remember, the more favor-minded you are, the more of God’s favor you’re going to experience. & this from my inspirational book.. (The Pocket Guide to Mischief by Bart King.) if you have to take or retake your driving exam, here are a few ways to make the DMV examiner feel safe… say things like “How do you start this thing?” or “My last four examiners were mean. You look nice.” maybe “I’ve never driven this car before.” and if you really want to scare them just say “I haven't driven in twenty years. I've been in prison a while.” Learn to write your hurts in the sand and carve your blessings in stone. Till next month…

I haven’t been anywhere new to eat the last month, but I did visit a new old place. The Bayou View Service station on 48th street in Gulfport has a new make over. It is now the Cooper’s Bayou View full service station. This station was built in 1957 and it is the original building. The building was redone and made to look like an old style service station. The station is a full service, meaning you can have you gas pumped, oil checked, tires checked and windshield washed while you sit in the car. This is the only complete full service station still on the coast. If that is not you thing, you can still pump you own gas and clean your own windshield. James is the manager and mechanic, with Chris as his service tech. Carlton and James Y. wait on the gas island out front and take care of the full service island. The station will do most mechanic work except pulling engines, transmission and things of that nature. The station has the fifties look inside with black and white tile with a counter and stools to set at along with chairs by the windows. The biggest change is the price of gas. In 1960 the average price was 31 cents a gallon and today it is $2.00 plus. The station is open 6 to 6 Monday thru Friday for all types of work. Then it is open 6 to 2 on Saturday for gas only. This is great for the those who need to fill up their rod for the weekend. Go by and take a look inside at the old oil company signs and oil cans from the past. Keep checking the Motorsports Magazine there are more things coming for the station that you may be interested in. Till next month J. R.

t seems to me that most people today want everything instantly. Oh, we had instant coffee in my younger days, instant oats, and Jiffy Pop popcorn, but mostly we took our time and made things from scratch. Last night we went out for our Friday night dinner. I swear every person in that restaurant had their cell phone out doing something on it. Couples were ignoring each other, because they were on their phones. What can be so damned important that we no longer have time to pay attention to the person sitting across from us? I remember sitting around the table at dinner time talking about our day. I remember working on cars with people and sharing ideas and different ways to do things. Is all of that live communication lost? Today young people don’t particularly turn to their friends and acquaintances for information, they fire up the computer, or tablet, or cell phone, or whatever electronic device they have and take some strangers advice on the internet. That advice could be valid or not, there is no way to tell. This current quest for instant gratification, took my mind back in my past when engines had to be torn down with regularity for valve jobs, tune ups were completed frequently, tires didn’t last 80,000 miles, shocks had to be changed, and we used lead solder as body filler. I will tell you about Frankie Walker, one of hundreds of people in my life that taught me, shaped me, and molded me into the person I am today. He, like so many others, wasn’t forced to educate me, but rather felt an obligation to pass his talents onto others. Frankie was a body man who was a master at the lead soldering process. Our first encounter came when I was working in the parts department of an automobile dealership. I was 16 years old. Any spare time I had available, I spent out in the shop watching the specialists maintain vehicles. I loved hot rods and customs and was eager to gain all the knowledge I could for the benefit of building those wild dream cars I had running around in my brain. Mostly, the technicians tolerated both my nosiness and my ignorance. Frankie Walker worked in the body shop and at first appeared not to notice my intrusion into his creative space. Frankie had an exterior appearance that was not welcoming. I thought he looked like he was at least 100 years old. He had sort of a permanent wrinkled scowl on his face. His hair was unkempt, and he didn’t appear as though he bathed daily. He always had a cigar stuck in his mouth. The cigar was seldom lit, and when he did light it, he used the torch he seemed to have permanently attached to his hand. He looked like an unfriendly person who wanted to be left alone, and would not encourage conversation. In truth, Frank was a truly kind man who was eager to teach his trade to anyone willing to learn from him. He was patient and always had positive ways to instruct without undermining my self-esteem. This brilliant, talented artist taught me that using lead solder as body filler was like icing a cake—both fun and frustrating at the same time. He taught me that perfectly clean metals are the foundation of all soldering. All paint, grease, dirt, and rust must be removed by scraping, sanding, or filing. If the solder is covering a break in the metal, then the metal must be welded, the weld
hammered down and brought back to original contour as closely as possible. Never rely on solder for strength. Frankie taught me the importance of proper heating of the metal and solder to get the desired effect--not too hot, and not too cool – as metal will warp if over-heated. He taught me to braze holes with bronze rod which is easier to clean up, won’t rust, and has more strength than lead. This man showed and guided me through the entire process from the extensive prep work, to the final perfect repair. I could tell you a lot more about the process, but I don’t have the space and you might not have the attention span. Let’s just say that it was something that I learned many years ago that has become almost a lost art form, but is every bit as useful today as it was then. I can never repay Frankie for the education he gave me and the kindness he showed to a young teenager. Frank Walker played a huge role in molding me into the man I am today. So what say we concentrate less of our time on instant gratification and more of our time on personal relationships? We will be sending out a message that families really are important and sharing knowledge and experience can preserve the old ways for posterity, and link them to the new instruments for efficiency. I’ve learned…That the best classroom is at the feet of an elderly person.

Pecos Bill finds a Hard Outfit retold by S. E. Schlosser Well now, Texas jest became too tame for Pecos Bill once he killed off all the bad men, so he struck out for New Mexico, looking for a hard outfit. He asked an old trapper he met on the way where he could find a hard outfit, and the trapper directed Bill to a place where the fellers bit nails in half for fun. It sounded like a promisin' place to Bill, so he set off. But his durned fool hoss got its neck broke on the way, and Bill found himself afoot. Bill went a walkin' with his saddle on his back. Suddenly, he come face to face with a rattlesnake 'round about fifteen feet long and lookin' fer trouble. Now Bill wanted to be fair to the rattler, so he let it get in a few jabs before he beat the stuffin' out of it. Being a kind man, when the snake was beat, he picked it up, wrapped it around his neck and carried it along with him. They was a headin' through a narrow canyon when a cougar thought he'd have a bit of fun and jumped them. Bill never turned a hair. He jest put down his saddle and then whipped the tarnation out of the cougar. Hair flew everywhere, blocking the light sose the jackrabbits thought it was night and went to bed. Finally that cat were so beat he cried like a lost kitten and jest licked Bill's hand. So Bill saddles him up and they tear off across them hills like forked lightening. Whenever Bill wanted to calm that cougar down, he'd just give him a tap with the rattlesnake. They set such a pace that they soon rolled into the hard outfit the trapper'd told Bill about. Quick as a wink, Bill jumps off the cougar, helps himself to some beans and coffee, wipes his mouth with a prickly pear and turns to look at the toughs sittin' around the fire. "Who's the boss around here, anyhow?" he asks. "I was," said a big mountain of a feller about seven foot tall and wide, "but you are now, stranger!" I just love a story with a happy ending, don't you? : Rusty

WAKE UP America ! ! ! At what point do we stop giving away OUR RIGHTS ? We've gone so far the other way . . bent over backwards not to offend anyone. THE HAIRCUT One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, “I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.” The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, “I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.” The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you ' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, “I can not accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.” The Congressman was very happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut. And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it. BOTH POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON! Sent in by: Ted Miller performancepb@

The year is 2024 and the United States has just elected the first woman as President of the United States, and she is from Pittsburgh! A few days after the election, the president-elect calls her father in Pittsburgh and asks, "So, Dad, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?" "I don't think so. It's a long drive; your mom isn't as young as she used to be, we'll have the dog with us, and my arthritis is acting up in my knee." "Don't worry about it, Dad, I'll send Air Force One to pick you up and take you home, and a limousine will pick you up at your door," she said. "I don't know. Everybody will be so fancy. What would your mother wear?" "Oh, Dad," she replied, "I'll make sure she has a wonderful gown custom-made by one of the best designers in N.Y." "Honey," Dad complained, "You know we can't eat those rich foods you and your friends like to eat." The President-elect responded, "Don't worry, Dad. The entire affair is going to be handled by the best caterer in D.C. And I'll ensure your meals are salt-free." So her parents reluctantly agreed, and on Jan. 20, 2024 arrived to see their daughter sworn in as President of the United States . The parents of the new President are seated in the front row. The President's dad sees that a Senator is sitting next to him and leans over and whispers, "You see that woman up there with her hand on the Bible, becoming President of the United States ?" The Senator whispered in reply, "Yes, sir, I sure do." Dad says proudly, "Her brother played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers!" Sent in by: tstauffer6@ What do these two jokes say about our politicians and the respect given to them? It may be that as taxpayers we feel our elected officials will take advantage of any situation they can benefit from.. and to a lot of us they aren't as important as they think they are. We only get one vote..But what if your one vote was the deciding vote. Yeah I know there isn’t any way of telling, but some of you dream about winning the zillion-air lottery. Me I just dream about a peaceful world, where all of us can go outside and play.. till the streetlights come on!! Ed.

Aboard the Flying Fortress By Candy Cocktail This is Candy Cocktail here, inviting you to take a flight on a B-17 with me! Welcome aboard! On a gorgeous January day in Brooksville, Florida, I was honored to attend the 2014 Experimental Aircraft Association’s B-17 tour. Growing up with a military family, I wanted to see the plane myself and learn more about it; nonetheless I also wanted to share my experience with all of you. The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Air Force for the strategic bombing campaign against German targets in World War II. The heavy bomber aircraft was delivered on May 18, 1945. The model I flew on is a B-17G Flying Fortress, Army Air Corps serial number 44-85740. Of the 12,731 B-17’s that were built, there are only 13 still flying today. Production peaked at 16 airplanes a day in April of 1944. The aluminum overcast was designed by Seattle, Washington's Boeing Company in 1934.The first prototype flew in 1938. Then during the war effort, Boeing could not keep up with production so they contracted out to Vega Aircraft Company (now Lockheed) and Douglas Aircraft, who made the last one third of the planes while Boeing made the first two thirds. I take pride in knowing that my grandmother, Elaine Green, joined the women working for the war effort by working on planes at Douglas Aircraft in California during that time. The required crew of 10 consisted of a Pilot, Co-pilot, Navigator, Bombardier, Flight Engineer (top turret gunner), Radio Operator, Waist Gunners (2), Tail Gunner and Ball Turret Gunner. The Ball Turret Gunner was also called the belly gunner. When the time came, that crewmember would crawl into the upside down ball at the bottom of the plane that swiveled around. Unfortunately if the system messed up, he would be stuck in it. On both sides of the plane is a window and gun for the waist gunners. The gun on each side is a Browning .50 caliber machine gun with 1000 rounds each. However, once it was out of ammo you were done. If you have ever heard of the term the whole nine yards, it is because that ammo belt is 9 yards long. That is where that term originated. There are protective armor plates installed at the crew stations throughout the plane, including the tail gunner area which had padded armor plates and bulletproof glass. For passengers, there is a bench seat for 3 people in the aft compartment and three seats in the radio compartment. A 1,700 gallon fuel capacity allows the plane to fly 300 mph at 30,000 feet. At a height of just over 19 feet, the bomber’s basic empty weight is 34,000 pounds with a gross weight during wartime of 65,500 pounds. We entered the aircraft through the aft door, which is also the primary exit for the aircraft. In an emergency, the bombardier section, radio compartment hatch, cockpit windows and the tail gunner's hatch (just aft of the tail wheel mechanism) could all be used as exits. Four Curtiss Wright 1820-97 engines power the B-17. These are 9-cylinder, 1200 horsepower engines that have an excellent record. If it were necessary to shut down an engine, the aircraft flies quite well on three engines or even on two if need be. After takeoff, we were free to leave our seats and walk about the aircraft, including the bomb bay area, the cockpit and even go down into the nose section. Seeing the nose section of the plane was my favorite part. The nose section is a kind of large glass bubble with a gun and a seat that seemed to almost float in the air. It stuck out of the plane allowing you unobstructed views above, below and to each side. The bombardier and tail gunner compartments were the only areas restricted to us during the flight due to the cramped space. The airplane can carry approximately 8,000-10,000 pounds of bombs. It varies with the amount of fuel and such. The missions flown were 8-10 hours in duration. The B-17 was a high-flying, long-range bomber that could defend itself while it established itself as an effective weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other U. S. aircraft in WWII. Of the 1.5 million metric tons of bombs dropped by United States aircraft on Germany and its occupied territories, 640,000 tons were dropped from B-17’s. It became an icon of WWII. In addition to all of the interesting facts that I learned about the plane from the EAA staff, I also had the opportunity to talk with some of the other visitors and hear their stories. There was a set of brothers whose dad flew a number of missions on a B-17 bomber and they had always wanted to fly in one to pay homage to their father. Among the interesting stories about their father, they mentioned that during the war, their dad, like the other troops, was given a number of items in case of a crash landing behind enemy lines. One such item was a silk map, made to endure a water landing. I enjoy learning about our history, yet I had never heard about the military using silk maps before. The crew of a B-17 would fly up to about 25,000 feet in the air. It would take them about an hour to get there. Once they reached that height it was a cold minus 40 degrees with no heat in the airplane. There was no comfort besides their heated suits and some heated plugins, but chances were high that these did not work. They would fly any amount up to 1000 B-17’s together while making a bombing run over Germany. The planes could not be flown any less than 50 feet from one another. With a wing span of 103 feet, 9 inches and a length of 74 feet, 4 inches, that must have been quite a sight. The well planned and executed formations of these large, 4 engine planes was essential for the assurance of the men’s safe return to ground. This particular plane never saw war. It was on a ramp in California and when it was finished it was all loaded up and never went to war. It was then sold and almost scrapped, but an operator in Alabama bought it. For the next several years it was used to spray for fire ants. Then it went to an operator in Miami where it ran to South America and the Caribbean transporting cattle. The airplane was acquired in the mid80s to early 90s by the EAA who restored it to the original World War II condition. The plane you see today is what you would have seen in 1945.

The most surprising part of the flight was how perfect the flight was. Besides the fact that it was a cool, sunny Florida day ideal for flying, with the plane being 70 years old, I did not expect such a smooth flight. Our pilot Sean had been flying for almost 50 years and wanted to be a part of this historical event with EAA because as he stated, “it is a privilege and an honor to fly such a plane.” This is the preservation of a window into history where if so desired, visitors can actually feel, touch, climb on and actually fly in a real B17. The EAA’s goal is to enhance visitors' knowledge of the B-17 aircraft and give guests the same admiration they have; a greater appreciation for those men who risked their lives to protect our freedom over fifty years ago. Every flight taken by this aircraft is in honor of these gallant men. I was honored to ride in this plane and experience what it would have been like for the young men in WWII. As if I did not already have a great admiration for them, my appreciation and respect has only increased since my experience. The generation of young men that flew these planes was, according to Tom Brokaw, the generation that saved the world. For more information about the tours, to see photos and to find out where the B-17 will be next, be sure to visit their website at www.eaa.org. Seeing the plane is an educational and fun experience for the whole family!

On September, 2014, my wife Nell, son Billy, daughters Kay and Judy and myself headed to Panama City, Fla. I was to be inducted into the Old Drag Racers Hall of Fame. In order to be eligible, you must be over 65 years old, have raced or been involved in drag racing during the 60’s & 70’s in the states of Ms., Al., Fla., La. & Ga. I had raced in several different cars but only one stood out. It was the 1957 Chevy 2 door Handyman wagon which was called the Jolly Green wagon. I raced this car at Mobile drag strip known as Dauphin Island and also raced in Hub City, Gulfport, Houma, Laplace and Jackson in both the Junior and Super Stock X classes. I won the Ms. State championship in 1972 and took State champion in Alabama for 1969-1972 and in 1973. I won Top Dog at Magnolia Drag way in Gulfport. I have over 150 class wins and trophies. In 1991 I purchased a 1971 Chevelle SS and here are some of the things I have done with it. It was featured in Muscle Car magazine in April, 1991, and December 1994, (won the race/show at Muscle Car World finals in Memphis) featured again in January, 1995. It was also featured in Chevy High Performance magazine in 1994 and Chevelle Report in 1995. 1998 She won the 1/8 finalist in Pro E.T. at the Hot Rod magazine Power Fest in Memphis. Featured in Gulf Coast MotorSports in 2001. In 2004 won MSD True Street at N.M.C.A. world finals in Memphis, Top 20 Muscle Car Show & Shine at N.M.C.A. 2006 the car ran in the Fastest Street Car magazine and won 2nd place in the burnout contest at the N.M.C.A. World finals. Took top 20 in the N.M.C.A. Show/shine in 2006 & 2008 where Warren Johnson gave out the awards. 2007 she won 2nd place in Most Horse Power at the Dyno Pull at a block party in Ellisville, Ms. In 2014, I was inducted into the Old Drag Racer’s Hall of Fame. What an honor to be in the likes of Jack Cooley, J.C. Sizemore, Billy Jacobs, Emmitt (Rattlesnake), Austin Aubrey Padett, Hubert Platt, Ellis Milner, Buster Coush, Phil Bonner, Clayton Harris, Max Smith, Dick Brannon, Sidney Foster, M.A. Madden, Will D. When I was a child in the 1950s, the bathing suit for the mature figure was-boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift, and they did a good job. Today's stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure carved from a potato chip. The mature woman has a choice, she can either go up front to the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus that escaped from Disney's Fantasia, or she can wander around every run-ofthe-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands. What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which gives the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you would be protected from shark attacks. Any shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash. I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place I gasped in horror, my boobs had disappeared! Eventually, I found one boob cowering under my left armpit. It took a while to find the other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is now meant to wear her boobs spread across her chest like a speed bump. I realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment. The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately it only fitted those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom and sides. I looked like a lump of Playdoh wearing undersized cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped her head through the curtain, "Oh, there you are," she said, admiring the bathing suit. I replied that I wasn't so sure and asked what else she had to show me. I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two-piece that gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a serving ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard-skin bathers with ragged frills and came out looking like Tarzan's Jane, pregnant with triplets and having a rough day. I tried on a black number with a midriff fringe and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them. Finally, I found a suit that fit, it was a two-piece affair with a shortsstyle bottom and a loose blouse-type top. It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge-friendly, so I bought it. My ridiculous search had a successful outcome, I figured. When I got it home, I found a label that read, "Material might become transparent in water." So, if you happen to be on the beach or near any other body of water this year and I'm there too, I'll be the one in cut-off jeans and a T-shirt! Posted by: Margaret Ann Marasco

The weather is getting closer to spring and cruisin’ season is starting to really kick off. Today we made it to the 2nd. annual Warren Automotive Show in Waveland, MS. This show got a little bigger than last years, and what great weather they had. The proceeds from the showgoes to the Hancock Humane Society. This year they also gave some of the proceeds to a group called Savanna Smiles, this group helps families who've lost a child and need help with funeral expenses. It was a good show for good causes. They had hamburgers/hotdogs and all the fixins along with tricycle racing and music. Till next time see ya on the road, Allen

Let's discuss motor oil for a bit. In the 40's the fast midget people used non detergent motor oil. The place to buy it was at the airport, anywhere in the USA. This was pure motor oil, no detergents added. When your 5000 feet up in a plane, not much chance of picking up dirt or anything. In the 30's cars had many problems due to many dirt roads, and other debris. Dad traded in his '26 Model T Ford, for a 1932 Chevy 4 door. He knew this was going to be the last car that he would have. So, every once a year, in the summer he would drain the oil put in 4 quarts #10 oil and 1 quart of Kerosene. He would start the engine and let it idle for about 5 or 10 minutes. He then would drain the oil, and it would be, dirty and have lots of carbon in it. He then would put in 30 weight (car was used when he bought it). He never had an engine problem. He was a ferrier, (blacksmith, gunsmith, horse shoer) and in WWI he was expert pistol, riffle, field artillery. Back to the oil, about 1941 or so, a guy named Franz made an oil filter for passenger cars. You had to run the lines, install the filter can, and then insert a roll of anybody's toilet tissue and you were in business with beautiful brand new oil whenever you checked it! It was recommended you change tissue every 4 months! The story goes that Lubrifiner bought them out, but Franz disappeared. If you ever find a 30's car in a barn or junkyard, if it has a Franz Oil Filter on the engine, that filter would be worth a mint to a museum. This brings us to Bob Lancaster of Santa Fe Springs, Ca. He was a good friend of mine and also Bob Clawson. Lancaster sponsored Bob Clawson's midget, and also my midget. His oil was originally called Torco V Block. He started with motorcycles, due to the need for oil that could stand excessive heat. He owned his own refinery and was an exceptional petroleum engineer. He came to us (Bob Clawson's #97) and my #84 midget. They were both Ford Flathead V-860 midgets. They had high heat problems. The normal running temp. during the race was 220` to 230 In the late 40's and early 50's I had been running Aeroshell 40 weight oil, and it would be very thin at the end of the race, but still working ok. So in case you weren't around at the aforementioned years, Bob Lancaster opened Torco (stands for “Themic Oil Refinery Corp”) and filed a patent on 20/50 motor oil. He was inventor of split # oil by his patent. I was amazed at how easy the 20/50 poured compared to Aero Shell. Bob put it simply “the first # is fluidity rate, and the 2nd # is the viscosity”. I ran 12 years, 172 races and never lost an engine. I did have one in the race car, and one complete on the bench, complete with headers installed. Two of us could pick one up by the headers, and pull it our of the chassis. The engines were aluminum heads, manifold, and “Tin Sides” on the block. The company was sold to Evan Knoll in 1981 and was
14

purchased back in 1990. Rumor has it that 7/25/12 in Grand Rapids, MI Mr. Knoll pleaded guilty to 100 million dollar fraud. Torco was used by Keith Black in the nitro burning drag cars. Jim Dunn, Garlits, Prudhome, all were users of Torco. Bob Lancasters brother was big time motorcycle salt flats racer with his Ariel square four. Of course he used Torco as those above.
Bob died at age 80, born in the 1920's and left his mark on the auto industry even today! I ran Nitro regularly to qualify, and if need (against the Offies) in the main events. Vic Edlebrock Sr. was very successful against the Offies at Gilmore Stadium in Los Angeles, Ca. One of the tricks to run it (Nitro) was to have teflon buttons on 2 sides of the pistons and keep the “skirts” from scorching. Later I used them on the wrist pin holes for “keepers”. This took a lot strain off the engine and upped the RPM limit.

Getting old is a funny thing. Not funny ha, ha; but funny in a queer kind of way. You are young, young, young, young, young and bam…you are old. It seems that someone flips a switch somewhere, an angry cruel switch. You can see it chronicled in photos. Take Paul McCartney of the Beatles…he is young, young, young and bam you see a photo and he is old.
How did that happen, it seems it’s not a slow process as much as a fast one. The photos and the perception. Some folks can be young longer than others. My grandfathers were old and died when I was very young. I couldn’t imagine being that old and felt sorry for them. Heck I woke up yesterday and I was a Great Grandfather and I’m still cool, but I too have succumbed to being old. I never thought as a young person, that our music got old with us. I thought as you got older and you grew up, your musical taste changed and somewhere along the line you started liking what we called “Elevator Music.” Who knew there would ever be 70 year old Led Zeppelin or Lynyrd Skynyrd fans? You can look back through your own photos and find the same thing. You can look at 10 photos of you growing up over the years and bam, there is that one photo, that first photo where you became old. You tend to see it more in other people than you do yourself. Facebook has connected a lot of long lost friends back together again. You remember those friends frozen in time the way they were, the way you remember them, you re-connect with them after 40 years and bam, ole Dave sure got old. Talking about a fast switch, forty years bam from 17 to 57 wow! Wow, is normally my first reaction, you can’t say anything because they are probably thinking the same thing about you. Don’t get me wrong I’m all about looking forward and moving forward with my life and what’s around that next corner. But I do find myself looking back more and more. It’s interesting how good the past can look, scrubbed clean of all the bad and negative things that were actually reality. Being 17 was great, but my car sucked, it was cool but worn out, my clothes sucked…thank goodness for the blue jean fad and I was broke all the time being a radio DJ, but it was overshadowed by having the time of my life, meeting and partying with some of the most incredible stars and bands of our time. Great concerts, great times backstage, in various hotel rooms and great interviews in person and on the phone. It was all good up until I got married for a second time to my current wife Scotty and she said “either you have to start making some money or get a different line of work.” I then had to grow up a little and got in the business side of Radio and TV, but I kept my hand on a microphone and on the fun. For 30 years stock car race announcing keep the mic in my hand and the fun going on. After the end of the 30th year I came home and told Scotty I was done, I had told everyone I was retired from stock car racing. The 2005 Snowball Derby in Pensacola, FL was my last race. Do you want to know what Scotty said? She said “I’ll believe you have retired when race season starts and you don’t go.” This year will be 10 years that I haven’t gone. I watch NASCAR on TV and talk about it on the radio, but I have not gone to a race since that last one in 2005. When you stop something, I believe you have to really stop it, I still don’t know what it would feel like to go back to a race and sit in the stands and I don’t know if I want to know.
As I’m writing this column, we are three rehearsals into “Inherit The Wind”, the play at Center Stage in Biloxi that I have a part in and we have about fifteen more rehearsals to go. Each practice lasts about three hours. This play has a lot of cast people. The lawyers, the judge, me the bailiff, the accused, the jury and all the colorful townspeople, so it’s a slow grind. You begin with a bunch of people on a stage in all the wrong spots and the director begins getting each person in the right spot… in the right time, walking and talking a certain way and delivering their lines. It is an amazing process from the group of folks bumbling around on stage, reading out of a binder to becoming a believable character and telling a story. Oh those lines…for me remembering the lines are the toughest part. Not being on stage, or walking or talking or all the other stuff, but remembering the lines. What makes the lines so tough for me is that you have to have those lines down to the point of being able to just concentrate on delivering those lines. It’s always 90% prep and 10% execution in any public speaking, so that 90% is where the work is for me in a play. Thank goodness at this point, I have learned my lines enough that they are not quite as daunting as they were, but I’m still not there yet. The play dates are March 5-15 at Center Stage in Biloxi, just off Eisenhower Drive. Call (228) 388-6258 for tickets. The walking sticks are coming along. I finished the first two, one for Scotty and one for me, which we will keep. I have seven or eight in progress. It was going to be a hobby, a hobby is something you do when you have time. I am notorious for turning a hobby into work, so having the amount of time I want to have to work on them is tough. So do I work, work, work to get sticks ready for the car shows, or do I try and keep it a hobby, do the sticks as I want and as I can, and bring them to the shows when I have enough. I’m leaning toward the latter. Can I keep it a hobby and can I keep it fun? Don’t think I need another job! Still trying to do the things in the off season I need to get done before the car show season begins. One thing I got accomplished was to color code the nine different locks on the trailer. Each round lock had created a hat dance, if you will going through all the keys to find the one that fits. I have four different keys that fit those nine locks, so getting them all color-coded will sure speed up the process and slow down the aggravation. Get the Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER state of mind…it really works! Til next month…

The ol’ 39 By: Jimbo - Photos by Jack Criswell The interesting thing about this 1939 Ford is once it was mine. Like some of you I had just too many projects, not enough time and a complete lack of funds to get it done. Such was the case of the 1939 Ford I bought from a friend. The ol’ 39 had been sitting in a container out of the weather for years and was actually in fair condition. (for someone who could fabricate, weld, do body work and had a vision). I had a vision but that was about the extent of my expertise. Well I held on to the car for a year and realized if I wasn’t going to do anything, I had to pass it on. So I placed an ad in MotorSports.. I got a call from Dan Tackett. He had Gasser fever. The Geezer Gasser was calling to his interest and this ol’ 39 was just what he needed. Originally from Colorado the car came to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and parked in someone's back yard waiting to be rescued. The 39 soon filled up with lawn & garden fertilizer, chickens, and whatever else needed to be kept out of sight. That was till our local NSRA safety inspector took his rollback to the rescue. Here was a pre-49, and a potential street rod just waiting for the right people to come along. The car was in fair condition. It was all there and the deal was made. Soon the car was loaded up and rolling down the highway to a new home. It was in a storage container where I first saw the “thing of beauty” My imagination was soon running away with thoughts of the finished project. Only problem was my wallet wasn’t keeping up.. That’s when I knew it was time to let go.
Dan built my 29 Ford in 2004, a daily driver street rod that I still drive. So it was no surprise when he told me he wanted to build a “gasser” and go to the track. Soon the ‘39 had a complete makeover. After framework, safety work & body work, Dan stuffed in a 40 over 392 Hemi with 4 bolt main, Vinolia forged 8-1 pistons, billet aluminum rods, MSD, custom built & matched carbs for the 671 blower in front of the JW Bell powerglide turning the 9” 456 spool rear. Stopping power was supplied by the Wildwoods all around. Yep this 1939 Ford has a new life and attracts attention wherever it goes. Powerful off the line, loud and heart thumping as it passes by, you can’t help yourself thinking what if.. Soon the “Red Devil” will once again be loaded into a container and head to it’s new home in Pennsylvania. Now this 1939 Ford is a true Street Rod. It will be driven on the highway, make a few passes at the local dragstrips and attend car shows. All the things I had envisioned. I might not be behind the wheel but I can’t help smiling as l look at what a few guys will do to save the images from our past and pass them along. I asked Miss Emelia to pose with the car. There is a certain kind of attitude this “Gasser” brings to the street and it is all about survival... I have one piece of advice to pass on to your readers. “Never give up, and work hard on the things in life that make you smile. Believe in yourself !! . ….. Miss Emelia.

While being only 1 of two great rallies still held at Big Creek Park on beautiful Lake Somerville, it hosts many new elements in the rally world and includes the carts and bikes as one. Bike games for the bikers and Cart races add a new twist. We are pretty sure all our hard core bikers bro and sisters are pulling for a good ol’ fashion cart crash but hey it's a party for all and let the truth be known for all you nay sayers we won't go to a rally with carts good luck finding one! Most all our crowd are hard core riders who choose to take to 4 wheels during this event as its safer you can haul more breasts and booze on a cart then a bike. With this said 13 live bands concert large stage 60 plus vendors Blowout Biker productions on hand for the in between fun and stage fun, just too much to list. Expected crowd this year in the thousands, hay-fields maybe back in use for roadside self contained camping.
