Somebody may have told you, you can’t do it. Nobody in your family may have done it. The good news is this is a new day. You’re the difference maker. Rise up and go get what belongs to you. Quit letting people pull you down. Your friends and loved ones may mean well, but God didn’t put the dream in them, He put the dream in you. Don’t let them talk you out of it. Don’t settle for mediocrity because everybody around you is stuck there. Go get your dreams. …… Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo I attended the Mississippi annual planning meeting in Pearl, MS. Fifty four people representing 27 Car Clubs exchanged information about times and location of events that are taking place this year. Most of these car shows are in Mississippi and not all clubs were there due to the weather. Congratulations go out to Earl Brewer named the Mississippi NSRA Street Rodder of 2017. Dan Gurney (1931-2018) the famous racing driver and Formula 1 pilot died on January 14, 2018 at the age of 86. Porsche owes its only success as a vehicle manufacturer in the Formula 1 World Championship to Gurney, who won the 1962 French Grand Prix in Rouen in an eight-cylinder Porsche 804. Just a week later Gurney led from start to finish to triumph at the Solitude racetrack near Stuttgart; his team-mate Joakim Bonnier took second place to secure a one-two for the air-cooled Porsche Type 804 in front of its home crowd. Driving appearances for the Swabian sports car manufacturer in 1961 and 1962 would leave lasting memories; as Gurney once reflected, “It was with Porsche that I really learned how to drive–because they gave me cars that didn’t constantly break down and I could lay down the kilometres faster than ever before.” Gurney was considered to be an all-round talent in the field of motorsport: The American enjoyed plenty of success throughout his career and was the first driver to win races in Formula 1, NASCAR and the IndyCar Series, as well as sports car races, including with his own team. With the invention of the “Gurney flap”, he improved aerodynamic efficiency by adding a spoiler to the rear wing. He was also the first driver to spray champagne on the podium, inadvertently starting a tradition that is now imitated all around the world.

Here are a couple of e-mails that hit home with me…. Jimbo, You know ... Time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is.... The 5th set of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that I was only in the first set and the end of the match was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change....Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show

and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit! And so...now I enter into this last set of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though I made it to the fifth set, and I'm not sure how long it will last.. I could get lucky and take this match into overtime . . . . but this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime. So, if you're not in the fifth set yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you're in the fifth set or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life....so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! "Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY! One more thing before I put this magazine to bed.. a little silverhaired lady called me and said, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started." I asked her, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" she says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." I decided to go over and help her with the puzzle. She lets me in and showed me where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. I studied the pieces for a moment, then looked at the box, then I turned to her and said, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." Then I took her hand and said, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," I said with a deep sigh, "Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box." Till next month

By: Michael Lachaussee January 2018 found us with weather much like the end of 2017. However, it didn't dampen the spirits of the Hardee's Lucedale Breakfast Gang. Wiggins was well represented along with the local regulars. Most everyone stayed inside drinking coffee and visiting rather than braving the low temps and rain. This group represents a wide range in car interest, from stock antiques to rat rods. So many people don't have a clue to the many ways you can become involved and enjoy this hobby/sport. So let's discover some of the different categories. What is an antique car and how is that different from a classic car? An antique car is one defined as a car made 25 years prior to the current year. A classic is a fine or distinctive car either American or foreign built between 19251948 according to ACCA (American Classic Car of America). However, the definition seems to vary between organizations specifically the dates. What is a hot rod? A hot rod is typically defined as an old, classic American car with large engines modified for linear speed and often used in the sport of drag racing. The term "hot rod" has an unclear meaning but some old rodders claim the term means "stolen". Next month, we'll give you a version that is more factual and detailed about the true history of hot rods! What is a street rod? The street rod is a car from 1948 or earlier that has undergone modernization to the engine, transmission, interior or anything else. It's a non racing vehicle used for enjoyment. It's a more family friendly version of the hot rod. What is a rat rod? In the last decade, rat rods have become the craze, particularly among the younger generation. This is a highly exaggerated version of a 1950's jalopy. By highly exaggerated, we mean cars that are built to look poorly done on purpose with an assortment of unusual junk parts. Trucks or cars can fit into all the categories above. As you can see there are a number of ways you can enjoy the hobby. Come out to the Lucedale Hardee's Breakfast Gang meeting every second Friday of the month from 8 a.m. til. You don't have to own a car that fits into any of the categories above. Just come and enjoy the vehicles and meet new friends.
If you have a vehicle, feel free to bring. There is no cost associated with this meeting other than your coffee or breakfast.

This month I took a ride to my Brothers shop. No he is not a professional builder and no he does not do this for a living. I just felt compelled to let you folks see what he has been putting together. Like most projects this one started with an Idea and a sketch. His son had given him some spare pieces from an S-10 since all his son needed was the S-10 frame that was going to have a 54 Chevy pickup placed on it. I had removed a Cutlass front end from Chases big truck and replaced it with a Mustang 2, so the front end assembly was now ready for use somewhere else, off it went to brothers house. There was an old suburban rear end also off of the Sons 54 pickup that became available as well and away it went to brothers’ house. I had won a small block Chevy motor a long time ago at the Coastal Cruisers rod run and when my brother found out he asked what I was going to do with it, since I had a running and driving hotrod and no projects I sold it to him very cheap. I had found an intake and a carb and gave that to him long ago as well. So pieces and parts were being gathered over many years not ever realizing it would all come together as his project. There was also a cab for the S-10 that sacrificed its top and both door skins for the project as well. His idea was to build a car out of just a pickup bed, hence the name The Bed Sled. He narrowed the bed 13 inches, a couple of used wheel barrows were used for body pieces and a grille shell. Under the H-D Sportster tank is a functioning breather and filter, and since he likes Barqs rootbeer he topped the breather off with that. As you can see the wheel barrow handles were used as radiator and grille shell support. An old cane was fashioned into a shifter, which controls another donated/salvaged item the turbo 400 transmission. A donated fuel cell provides the liquid that makes it go too. Other than Headers, Gauges, and wiring and headlights most of what was put together was just spare pieces. I only assisted in the wiring and the brake line routing and assembly everything else was done by Gary. It now runs and drives and rides pretty good I might add, I was grinning from ear to ear the whole ride too. It’s great fun for him and I had a blast bouncing ideas off with him during this build process. He is looking to ride it around at this years’ Atomic Blast, last year it was just sitting on the trailer. It was built not to be perfect, but something different and unique, I think he nailed it. Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage February 2018
Not much happened on the Big Truck Project, I may need to install some heat pump type units in the old Carriage House for future work, plus when summer hits in about 2 maybe 3 weeks I could use the A/ C part to chill it out a bit. Will keep you posted. By the time you read this many will have ventured out to the 26th Annual Winter Rod Run. Although I no longer have a hot rod, I can assure you I went to this one. I go mainly to support that club and to connect with my old hot rod friends. It's always a good time and a nice turnout and a good mixture of cars and trucks to check out. I have also made an executive decision on my next project too. And I won't go in to too much detail until I make some major headway on the one presently needing my full attention. I and my oldest Grandson are so looking forward to a first ride in the Big Truck project. I am hoping he spends a few weekends with us so he may help me do a few things that I need a little help with. I have always enjoyed trying to teach him about all things automotive and mechanical. Hopefully I will also attend the Mardi Gras Day racing event at Gulfport Dragway, I will likely take the two grandsons with me. They both enjoyed themselves last year so we will try it again. They are both almost a year older and should understand a little more of what is going on. Hopefully as they grow older they have great memories of our time at the race track and want to continue going in the years ahead. I feel I have a chance once again with youngsters to get them fully indoctrinated in all things gear head related. I did it with our two sons and am doing fairly well with these two guys. Happy Mardi Gras, and Happy St. Valentine's Day, till next month from the Carriage House Later…. Gizmo

They don't bother us because we have guns to protect ourselves! We can never allow our government to take our guns. I say never ever will they take my guns. Or my cars. Or anything I've worked for without a fight. We are Americans we fight for our rights. Am I right or wrong friends? Cockadoodle doo!! So Atomic Blast 7 isn't far away! February, cold wet and miserable, time for inside projects and planning. I had a tough 2017, four surgeries and a truck load of pain pills. Thank God I had no problem getting off the pain pills. Some people have a difficult time with them. I could see why. I know my body would crave them, but my brain was like get me off this stuff. As we all get going with a brand new year, we all have hopes and dreams. As I write this column, I am waiting to see whether I will be hired for my biggest and greatest job yet. During the interview I found out the base pay and it blew me away. Never thought I could earn that kind of money without leaving the state. Even all that I have been through in the last couple of years God has blessed me. Pray for me! If the job comes through a 34 Ford is first on the list. I have been looking at 34 Fords for a couple of years now. I found this one in Georgia (PHOTO) that was beautiful inside and out, made a ridiculous offer on it that was turned down so moved on. You’ve heard me speak many times about my older brother Ken. He is all I have left from the family I grew up with. Well when I was a little kid and Ken was in high school he had hot rods. Ken had a 34 Ford Coupe and a 1954 Kaiser Darrin. The 34 Ford was typical of a 1960’s hot rod, because it was the 1960’s. It was a beautiful gold color, chopped, channeled, sectioned, open wheels with painted rims. How I loved that car. I have always loved the 34 Ford Coupes. The sedan version of the 1934 Ford was made famous by the notorious Bonnie and Clyde. It was their getaway car of choice for their bank robberies. They also died in one. I have always loved the 34’s and have been looking at buying a 34 Ford Coupe. I was not really in the position where I wanted to spend the money yet, but still looking for the right one. I like Detroit steel, however I do not like the rust that goes with it. Now if you go rat rod, you can just embrace the rust and go with it. But I’ve always been a shiny car guy. I like a good paint job and shiny chrome. I also like the fiberglass versions of the 1934 Ford Coupe. If you put two 34 Fords side by side, I’ll take the fiberglass over the steel body in looks and styling. I like the way the squared edges have been rounded and styled with the fiberglass versions. Designers took a perfect body style and refined it. I know that may be blasphemy to some car guys, but it’s just how I see it. And not having to chase rust so much is an added bonus. The fiberglass cars have become pretty well accepted in the street rod world and that’s good. During this car show off season, I’ve made some big dreams or plans. I have laid out in my head what I want to do and accomplish in 2018. All it takes is money to make it happen, lol. I hope by next month’s column I can tell/show you more of what I have in mind. And if you see me in a 34 Ford, you’ll know I landed that dream job I spoke of. You see it doesn’t matter how many times we get knocked down, beat up, stepped on or fail in life. It matters how many times we get up off the floor, dust ourselves off and keep going and going and going. As we get older, we learn it’s not about the end results we seek, but the journey. As a kid traveling with our parents we couldn’t wait to get where we were going, (are we there yet, are we there yet?) but as we look back it was the journey that made it special. I have always enjoyed the journey, the planning, the daydreaming, the hunt, the work…the destination is sometimes anticlimactic. Our job is to enjoy the journey and I’m trying to make the most out of the journey as I possibly can, with God’s help of course! Thanks for riding along! In the month of January the local car clubs met to discuss the upcoming dates of car shows to try and not step on each other toes, they have been doing it for years and it does help. Also it happens in Jackson, MS for statewide car shows, Looks like 2018 is going to be another exciting year for car shows. Get that hot rod project finished now while the weathers bad, because the 2018 car show season is coming! Here’s some of the 1934’s I’ve been looking at…eye candy for the cold winter days! til next month…

NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection NSRA's Vehicle Safety Inspection Program is FREE!
It's time to sign up for the FELLOW PAGES. This is one of the benefits of being a member of the National Street Rod Association. You receive a new copy every year. This book is members that want to give a helping hand and is a volunteer sign up. The fellow pages contain NSRA members names and phone numbers in states and cities from all over the Country that will help you. And If anyone wants to put their names in the FELLOW Pages just let me know. I have a report from Rich Marvil who used this information to get help. While in my annual trip to Panama City for The Emerald Coast Cruise in my wife Vikki and I uncounted car problems. After days after the car show was over not knowing anyone in P.C.B. I didn't know where to go. A fellow NSRA member told me about a repair shop that could help us. The Beach Auto Care managed by David Kreyer was just down the road from the condo we were staying. The shop really got me out of a jam. The shop is super clean all the techs are ASE Certified everyone was so friendly and polite. The information given by a NARA member helped us out of a bind. Rich really likes zip ties let him tell you this story. It will be a good laugh. Smile it make everyone wonder what you have been up to. Donna

The specialty vehicles NSRA members own are built to be driven on the streets and highways. They are used to transport people, often to far off locales for recreational enjoyment. The National Street Rod AssociationÂŽ is dedicated to vehicle safety and backs it up with a program that gives every owner the opportunity to have his/her vehicle safety inspected for free as often as they want with a strong emphasis on having it done at least once each year. The NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection Program is completely voluntary, and includes 23 different items ranging from the lighting system to suspension (see list that follows), and the sole purpose of the safety inspection is to advise the vehicle owner of problem areas, either real or potential. As an "advisory" type inspection, it is only used to call the owner's attention to something which may have been overlooked. The inspection is not mandatory and has no effect on entering or taking part in NSRA events. Safety Inspection Even though this program is totally voluntary, the number of vehicles inspected grows every year. The NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection is offered at each of the thirteen annual NSRA events, and at hundreds of independently produced activities all across the country. The program has become so popular, in fact, that each spring there is a growing number of "Safety Runs" where the main theme is only the Safety Inspection to make sure the vehicles are ready for another season of trouble free, safe fun. While more and more specialty vehicle owners recognize the benefits of having their vehicles safety inspected every year, there is one group of them that is even more keenly aware of the program's value; the guys and gals that make up the all volunteer NSRA Safety Inspection Teams. There is one of these teams in every state, and in areas where the number of enthusiasts is more heavily concentrated there are additional teams so that as many of them as possible will have the opportunity to take advantage of the safety teams' services and expertise. These Safety Inspection Teams are providing a very worthwhile service for the National Street Rod Association, but what they are offering for free to the individual enthusiast is much more important...an extra set of eyes to notice a potentially life threatening condition before it becomes more of one. There are approximately 800 people involved in making the NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection Program work, and they are do more than just talk about vehicle safety...they make it a reality! Considering the number of miles street rodders accumulate year after year on their street rods, this is a very safe hobby. With the emphasis NSRA puts on safety combined with the care street rodders put into their vehicles when constructing and maintaining them and the services provided by the NSRA Safety Inspection Teams, there is every reason to believe it will remain a safe hobby well into the future. While attending an NSRA National event, take a few minutes to visit the Safety Inspection Area and learn a little more about this great program first hand...take the time to have your vehicle safety inspected...or simply note the number of NSRA Safety Inspection Verification Stickers on the windshields of the vehicles you look at. Vehicle safety is an important part of our hobby and most all enthusiasts recognize that fact and are doing something to prove it... they are having their vehicle safety inspected every year.

Frankenstein Cars By Candy Cocktail The country known for giving us Gloria Estefan, popularizing plantains and black beans and rice and rolling only the best cigars, has also given us a frozen in time glimpse at classic car heaven. Innovation has become synonymous with Cuba's “Frankencars”, chalked full of hand built, improvised parts. In a country where owning or buying a car is far from the norm, these impressive automobile artisans can spend decades restoring their cars. Americans have long been denied a visit to the forbidden island just 90 miles south of Key West. Since 1960, The US embargo on the island made importing cars, parts or tools against the law. The enlightening TV show Cuban Chrome features beautiful classic cars thriving thanks to the Cuban artists' interesting talents, whose innovative techniques have kept these cars coming and going for over 50 years. The Discovery Channel docuseries details Cuban car culture as the first American television series filmed completely in Cuba, where classic American cars are cherished possessions. The series showcases members of Havana's premier car club doing the impossible in Cuba; restoring three dilapidated cars. The show is not merely interesting, but it is downright astonishing how creative the car owners must be to find parts in Cuba. The only way to keep these cars on the road is with Cuban engineering & help from one another. Without a network of friends in Cuba, it is nearly impossible to restore a car. Their love of

American cars is apparent, such as on a 1934 Model A hot rod completely restored & still the only one on the island. In a country of 11 million, there are only 60,000 classic American cars still on the road. Only a fraction of which are for sale since owners rarely sell as it is hard to get a new car and people usually pass their cars down to their family members. In a country where one car can last a family three generations, there are no car lots. If there is a car for sale that you want, you have to act quick: Simple case of supply and demand. Since the revolution in 59, homes have been property of the state. For decades you could not buy or sell your home, only swap them. In 2011, Raul Castro reformed the law allowing people to buy and sell property. Reported by thenewswheel.com, Fidel Castro's brother Raul has also abolished the law on purchasing a foreign vehicle, but modern rides currently come at a hefty place. Locals cannot go to the auto parts store to buy a replacement part. They have to use whatever they can, which means using different parts from different cars. Just like Frankenstein, hence the fitting namesake, one car owner had a piece of a Soviet Union car, an Italian car, a Chinese car and a diesel boat motor in his 1959 coupe. One method in which American parts can come into the country is by being hand carried by visitors. However, an import tax and complicated point system limit the amount of parts people can bring into Cuba from America, continuing to make parts rare. According to CNBC.com, most of the cars on Cuban roads are General Motors models. Russia later sent Ladas, but despite being newer, they failed to last as long as the American cars. With shiny Cadillacs, Grand Prix races and hotels of grandeur, the Cuba of the 40s and 50s was a luxurious vacation hotspot for Americans. Then in 1960, President Eisenhower put the first embargo in place. Covering all US exports to Cuba, the embargo disallowed the importing of new American cars. The embargo was subsequently expanded upon by President John F. Kennedy on February 7, 1962 to cover US imports from Cuba. To better put it into perspective, in the US there are 850 cars for every 1000 people, while in Cuba there are only 28 for every 1000. Subsequently, horses are still used by many to get around. It is said that one of the most beautiful sights in Cuba are the lines of classic cars filling their roadways, many of which are used as Cubans' everyday vehicles. The license plates that start with a “P” indicate the cars are privately owned vehicles and not government owned Taxis. For those visiting Cuba, a ride in one of Havana's famous Chevys or Fords will cost about $30. The ban on foreign vehicle imports also made fuel and new parts high commodities. In Cuba, much like their classic cars, gas is very expensive. Diesel costs about half as much, resulting in air thick with diesel smog. NBC reported that the stink of burnt diesel is everywhere because the nostalgic cars pose an environmental problem, as the gorgeous vintage models lack emissions control. The pre-1959 American cars, with brightly colored metal in a rainbow of colors, have their own quirky and unique features, from being painted with polka dots to having colorful lights streamed around the dash or DVD players inside. For decades Cuban residents could not simply go buy a new vehicle. Instead, to own a car, you needed a special permit issued

by state officials. As stated on the website salon.com, locals say the most popular models gracing their streets are 1951 and 1955 Chevys. When your old car breaks down, there is no AAA. You must rely on help from family members and strangers. If a family finds themselves low on funds, they must sell their original car, which can bring in about $30,000. Yet it can leave the family with no vehicle to use and not enough money to replace it for a generation. Cuban car owners do whatever they can to keep their engines running! From producing a variety of car parts in small metal shops around the country to some Cubans even making their own homemade motor oil or brake fluid. Internet is scarce in Cuba, where the average citizen has no internet access, making a search for parts difficult without the globally connected online technology that we take for granted. Because there was no buying of new vehicles, most Cuban cars are at least 30 years old. Chevrolet Bel-Airs (called cacharros), Ford Fairlanes and Ford Falcons are favorites on Cuban streets. So what are some ways that Cubans have created these Frankenstein cars? According to highsnobiety.com, these motor mad scientists have turned to shampoo for brake fluid, iron pipes as piston rings, Coca-Cola to loosen bolts and toothpaste to buff paint. Cuba has two official currencies. The convertible peso which is equivalent to the US dollar that both Cubans and Americans use and the national peso which is not used by visitors and is worth a mere four US cents.

After the embargo was lifted in 2014, there were 11 national Cuban car dealerships. In total, these dealerships sold only 50 cars and four motorcycles in the first six months of the new law because Cuba's economy makes it difficult for its people to save money. $5000 is a life savings in Cuba where the average worker makes only $20 per month. As explained on the website Buzzdrives.com, new and shiny cars are now owned almost exclusively by foreigners and hotels. In 2014, after 55 years, the Cuban government changed its car ownership laws, allowing anybody to finally become a proud car owner. However, the new car market is limited and with high import duties, the imported vehicles cost three to four times more than they would in the rest of the world, placing around an $85,000 price tag on a basic family sedan. This rate is high for those of us in countries outside Cuba, while it is an astronomical price in Cuba. Featured on Cuban Chrome, lots of gear heads love to street race because professional motor racing has been banned since 1962. For decades racers have still risked prison or having their vehicles confiscated. In 2013, the public lobbied for drag racing to be legal. Now that travel restrictions from the US to Cuba have changed, the classic cars roaming the streets have been described as one of Cuba's art forms and become an attraction all their own. According to a report in the Miami Herald, Cuba hosted a record 4 million visitors in 2016. Incredibly, thousands of cars are still running from the year the embargo was put in place. Originally made with American quality craftsmanship and excelling through decades of talented Cuban innovation and creativeness, the Frankenstein cars could likely

The 1960 Edsel Comet It is 1959 and the Edsel Design Division has designed a car of the future and built the prototype. The “comet” name was trademarked to Cottner-Bevington as the Comet Coach Company, building ambulance and hearse commercial vehicles. Ford bought the name in 1959. This car of the future ultimately would be named the Comet. This concept car took into consideration the public’s dismay with increasingly larger, more cumbersome gas guzzling automobiles. Edsel Division’s young and bold engineers designed and built what was originally coined by the marketing department “The Senior Compact” Comet. They were embracing the inevitable trend toward compact cars. The Comet was the best Ford could offer in this new size range and was built to exacting standards in the newest, most technically advanced plant in Lorain, Ohio. The plant was completed in 1958 to build the all new Ford line-up. This was to be a zinc plated unibody, twice hand primed, twice baked enamel paint, upgraded suspension, two speed automatic transmission, thrifty six-cylinder engine that was larger than a Falcon, and more luxurious than the competition. This entry-level compact Edsel was launched in March of 1960. A problem for this car of the future arose when Ford announced the end of the Edsel program on November 19, 1959. The saving grace for the Comet was that production of the 1960 Edsel continued until late November. The Comet was reassigned to the Lincoln-Mercury division to sell at Mercury-Comet dealerships, where it was marketed as a stand-alone product for 1960 and 1961 as the Comet, without any Mercury divisional badges. I have researched this and I perceive this to say that the Comet had no affiliation for two consecutive years, and therefore it was not officially a member of the Mercury line. I welcome input from you readers on this. The Comet was a hit with consumers and the dealers found long lines of customers waiting for this car. Developed concurrently with the Ford Falcon, early pre-production photographs of the sedan show a car remarkably close to the Comet that emerged, but with a split grille following the pattern established by Edsel models. Early Ford styling mules for the station wagon model carried the Edsel name as well. For their debut, the split grille was replaced by one more in keeping with Mercury’s design themes. However, the canted elliptical taillights, first seen on the Edsel prototype, were used and carried the “E” (Edsel) part number on them. An interesting tidbit is that the keys for the 1960 and 1961 Comets were shaped like Edsel keys with the center bar of the “E” removed to form a “C”. The Edsel Comet could be a car of particular interest to you collectors. If you are a collector and you have more to say about this car, please email me and educate me. People have been trying to educate me for more years than I care to reveal, but I soak it up the best I can.

FUZZY DICE! from Scooter Even if you are not in the hobby we all have seen those big dice hanging from car mirrors since the end of WW ll. I thought it was time to maybe rekindle some form of it again. Because this nostalgia practice has fallen to modern times and is almost gone from in the car hobby. I wish some “group” of car people would grab it up and re do it with rat rods, steam punk cars, tuner cars or hell, I don't care, the local moped clubs. Happily since 911 all of us have realized the awesome good of our fire fighters, police and service veterans. So dog gone it ….this came from our WW ll guys. Lets continue to honor them. Here's how it all happened. A squadron of British pilots referred to particularly dangerous missions as “DICEY. American pilots learned of the practice, but being.. well,, Americans, they took the odds of success a bit differently. In craps 7 & 11 are the lucky numbers. So WW ll American pilots started putting Dice in the cockpit of their planes with the 7 & 11 showing... for GOOD luck! After the war they continued the practice by sticking them on the dash boards of their cars showing a 7 and another pair to show an 11. Enter Mr. Ed Heinrich, a felt maker from California. Ed noticed what the car guys were doing. He had a ton of felt, so he sewed together some over size felt dice, added dots and strings.. and the rest is history. Dragging a plaque came from our British buddies in WW ll and our boys took it and added their American touch this practice. I have never found the exact person that can take credit for the 50's and up practice of having a car club or lone wolf car plaque. I got most of this from a famous car builder, TV and movie actor buddy that has since passed on that doesn't need to be named here. He was one of the GOOD ones, for sure. Also, I got a bunch of this info again a few years back when I became tight with Candy Clark, who got me with Bo Hopkins and he also relayed to me in the many conversations we had that Mr. Star Wars, and American Graffiti biggie billionaire also was a car guy back then and knows the straight skinny to do with dragging a plaque. He proved it in American Graffiti as I will tell you as we move on with this one. As I keep saying, In the forming days of nostalgia, in the late 40's and up car guys tended to be in or form car clubs. It was a big deal to be in one and when you were accepted in a club and paid your dues, you could get a club jacket, a T-shirt, and a car plaque with the club emblem and name of the club on it so your and your machine could cruise around and show off the fact that you were in a real club. As well as maybe attracting another possible members to your club. For you younger guns back them when you met another guy we ALL shook hands and said “Hi my name is Scott, what do you drive?” if it was not there right then. Being in a club was maximum solidarity. And I bet 90 % of you that still have a car with a plaque on it are doing it wrong? Most car clubs had you put enough chain on the plaque so it would drag when your car slowed down below maybe 10 miles an hour. This was the KOOL way to have it clank, and scrape making enough noise that every one near you would have to see what was making all of that noise. Which had it basically announcing to everyone that Scooter, his gal Sue and a CAM BUSTER CARS CLUB member was in attendance. Heck it was a given back then that if you cruised enough to scrape the club name off enough to have it hard to read, that the treasury had to buy you a new plaque. Because that meant that you were out there spreading / scraping & clanking the club name to lots of people. A Special note here. 95 % of the Low Rider Clubs have their much more expensive plaques inside their rides, so they are decently doing their own thing, which I am deeply into. I even have a regular column in a very large private Mexican magazine. I support them big time. Now per Bo and George. Again, checkout the plaque that sat on inside on the back shelf of Bos Hopkins Merc right behind Richard Dreyfuss's head. That was done on purpose by George and Bo to show car people in the know that the Pharaohs car club was a bunch of BAD GUYS. To sum it up. If you were in a bad butt club or had a serious disagreement with a rival car club it was not safe to have your club plaque hanging out side as it could get defaced or stolen. Thus the inside plaque of Bo's Merc. DUMMY SPOTS. Well this one I got back in the early 80's from what I can consider sounds like a fairly sure reason for Dummy Spots, and it did come from a hobby biggie, that shall remain unnamed. This one may have been happening before WW ll. The stainless or chrome, ….fake front cowl / fender mounted tipped down spotlights have been an accepted part of customs and even some just close to stock 40's and 50's cars, since the 30's. Back in the 20's and 30's the rich had those mega dollar cars that would run over 100MPH. But they still has kerosene or 6 volt lighting. So when they would let the big dog run, they would or could over run their stock lighting systems. So out came extra driving and spot lights that gave them more lighting for their higher speeds than most of us working peoples cars. Then at night when you saw extra lights coming up behind you at a high rate of speed you knew it was a big Lincoln, Caddy, Packard or maybe a Deusenburg. You basically got the hell out of their way as they dusted you. So hot rodders with souped up jalopy's figured it would be nice to fake having a faster “looking” car by installing a pair of those big buck super fast car spotlights. The problem was they cost big bucks all by them selves. But eventually guys found smashed biggies cars in the junk yards and could then afford what was left of the spot lights and screw them on their fenders up by the windshield. So at-least during the day you looked like you might have a faster car that required more lighting. Of course at night the tops lights weren't able to be turned face up so you could turn them on. And if any one looked inside your ride they would see that you did not even have the inside handle and switch. But it began a “thing” that still is happening on lead sleds and custom cars. Some good information to ponder. …… Scooter

Talking With the Owners of Main Street Motors by ChandaElaine Spurlock Talking to Jay Connelly, the owner of Main Street Motors, and his partner, Cindy Sheehan, is like sitting in the living room, talking your oldest friends over a cup of coffee. Their open office inside Main Street Motors in historic downtown Denison, Texas, is warm and inviting. Jay and Cindy greet friends and those just passing through to see the Classic cars being sold in recently opened space on Main Street in the same, welcoming manner. I was lucky enough to get to spend time chatting with Jay and Cindy about Main Street Motors, how they got started, and (of course) Classic cars. Jay started Main Street Motors from, "Just love of cars, period. That's the main thing. I've been dealing cars for 30-years, and then I bought the antique store (Main Street Antiques) 7-years ago, and when the women that was in this section moved out I told Cindy this was what we were going to do. Just kinda following an old dream, I guess." However, when it came to specializing in Classics, "It was something I had never done, I guess. I had never really been around the classics, I loved them, always did, but I think that is what kicked me into doing this. I love challenges. And it's fun. It's challenging, for sure, but it's fun." A lot of work has gone into getting Main Street Motors up and running, including a needed ordinance change to make selling cars on Main Street legal in Denison. (I'm going to get out of the way now and let Jay and Cindy tell their story). Cindy: "We haven't been doing this long. We just opened this show room at the end of May. So, we're very new to this. It took 3 or 4 months to get everything approved through the City to even have this here. And what's really unique about this location is this used to be a car dealership back in the late 40s." Jay: "Late 40s, early 50s." Cindy: "But that's what's kind of cool about this old building is that…" Jay: "This was a Dodge dealership." Cindy: "… And it's kind of gone full circle. We have a secondfloor up there that has a car lift in the back, that that's where they would work on cars was on the second-floor." Jay: "That was their Service Department, over our heads here. The lift is still in the floor. In other words, they took the cars up 12foot to the ceiling and flipped this board over and they'd drive over this board to get up on there (on the 2nd floor) and drive… The Service Department and the paint shop were up there." Cindy: "There's an engine hoist beam that's up there. It's just really cool that's it's gone full-circle." Jay: "I think that is one reason the City let us do it, though. Because it was a Dodge dealership at one time and I think that's why they gave us a stamp of approval. Like Cindy said, it took us five months to get that… That was a nail-biter because we were already set-up. We weren't selling, but we had cars in here. That was the scary part for me, the whole thing, because it was like, 'What if they don't do it? What do we do then?' Where do we go?' But it worked out." Cindy: "The comradery of people is just awesome, and there's a lot of people in Grayson County that have Classic cars and have the interest." Of course, even with the location approved and licenses in place, there are still challenges. "It's getting them (Classics) ready," said Jay. When it comes to restoration, "We do a little bit. Not as much as a lot of people do. I try to buy a car that has most of the work done already. May need some engine work or paint work or whatever else, that's the ones we like to go for." Most of the Classics sold by Main Street Motors are purchased from individual owners, rather than at auction. "I can do better buying from individuals, such as yourself. You can tell me what is wrong with it and what's not wrong with it and can make my determination on whether that's true or not, and when it's coming down an auction line it's hard to do."

When he's looking at a Classic, "I'd much rather buy a car that has the original engine in it, the original transmission, and go from there. Just from the ground up and start doing whatever we have to do it. We just bought a car the other day from a little, old, school teacher here in town. She bought it brand new and drove it every day, that Ford Falcon convertible right there. And, I mean, it's the original motor, everything matches, you know, and we drove it from her house. She's been driving it since 1965. So, that's the kind of stuff I like to find." But, "If they've done something that a restomod in it, like that 65 Corvette out there has a 94 Corvette engine in it and it's been done very well. I have no problem buying that car and selling it." "We haven't got into doing any type of restomod as far as putting a Corvette motor in a truck, or whatever, but when we get to that point, I'd rather do it ourselves. " With that in mind, Jay has future plans for Main Street Motors. "This is going to be our sales location. We are looking for a building right now to do some restoration and other things. We're kind of spreading that out all over right now and I would like to get it under one roof. We just don't have anywhere to do restoration here (at the sales location), so I am looking for a building close to where I can have people come in and work there on the cars …We're just taking cars everywhere, you know? I've got cars spread out all over the country trying to get stuff done to them…. So, I want to get it all in Denison, Texas, under one roof. " Main Street Motor's mission when it comes to Classic cars is simple. "I think the main thing is…no pressure, no stress. We just try to take care of our customers, you know, and make sure they feel at home and not do the high-pressure sale on them. I mean, that's not what this is about. I think Classic cars, that's one of the reasons I love this because it's a whole different breed of person, a whole different type of car sales. I haven't met anybody who loves Classic cars that aren't just great people, you know? Guys and girls, they're just a different breed from the normal car buyer, you know what I mean? And that's why I love this because, there's one thing that's kinda fun. A lot of people that come in here educate me on the stuff, because they've been around these cars all their life. …I'll never forget we had one girl who came in here and she had and MGA that was her first car in High School, and this was a 56… and she's like, 'Yeah, my Dad bought this car for me and then my first boyfriend made me get rid of it and I had to buy a car.' And she's always wanted a car like that again. So, she's been here three times looking at the car. Finally, I sold it and she walked in last week and said, 'Where's my car?' I think that's what's bring her back to the store because she came to visit 'her car'. It was her car. It's fun, you know? There's not a person that doesn't walk through these doors that doesn't tell you about how they used to ride with their grandpa in that car. I'm sure after 20-years I might be tired and want to retire…but right, now it's fun." Main Street Motors also sponsors car events in Denison, such as "Cars and Coffee (January 14, 2018)" an early Saturday get together for Classic car and coffee enthusiasts, the Lone Star 403 Car Show, and the Denison Fall Festival car show. There's even a rumor they may be coming down to join the fun at Cruisin' the Coast this year. Jay and Cindy also want to revive my favorite pastime as a teenager, cruising Main Street. "What we want to do also along with Cars and Coffee is I want to get Cruisin' Main going on Saturday nights. Which, right now, is against the law in Denison, Texas, to cruise Main, so we're going to have to have an ordinance change and everything else, but I think we can (probably) get that done. It'll be a lot of fun. Just everybody show-up out here and," said Jay. "Maybe have a street dance," said Cindy. "We want to tie it in with Watson's Drive-In (a local car-hop restaurant, think American Graffiti) up the street and have them open to where they can get a milkshake or whatever else, and kinda just have an old cruise night, you know? Just everybody show-up and have a good time." And I, for one, can't wait to join them in the fun.

You DO NOT Own Your Old Car Or Cars! By Scott Strenzel, aka “Scooter” Scooter's stories of his youth are fun to read and true, but not serious to and for the hobby. In the last few months I've been at some very large national car events. I've been able to meet and be given even a little amount of creditability as a freelance old car hobby writer by many of them. I was told I could use their names, but am simply not going to. They are simply too famous in the hobby. But what I am going to do is to put out some hard stuff to us in the hobby. Here is an example of what I'm trying to get at. I have a life long friend that has a unique collection of old cars, just fewer than 20 of them in fact. His collection was started in the '50s and '60s by his father. He was telling me at a show that his only child has no interest in cars, period. His unique collection is made up of only survivor cars with under 7,000 miles each. Now, they are not all red hardtops, or drop-top models. An example (I'm lying about it to protect him) but the numbers are correct. It's a 1954 Chevy 210 4-door with power steering and Powerglide with only 3,500 miles on it. Yes, some of his survivors are so called nothing cars, but they are all stock and nice. I told him that I had some deep conversations with the above mentioned biggies, about collectors getting older and facing certain death. One guy said that none of us actually own our cars. We are just keeping them until we die, and they get sold or scrapped. Guys and gals, this is basically true. If you have one or a dozen old cars and are over 60, you'd best be setting the correct stage of how that or those hunks of metal out in the garage will end up BEFORE you croak. We all know that when there is money around, family members can get a little funny about their share. My buddy has talked with his wife and now has it setup with lawyers etc, that he's keeping his favorite street rod. And the rest of them are now being sold. I say also that he is searching for the proper buyer that's much younger and will have the correct feeling as to the value of the car and can convince him that he will carry on the car in the way he would if he was alive. One guy that has about $450,000 into six or seven cars told me his kids would sell them all to the first wholesale buyer at whatever bid he gave them. Then they'd take the money and buy an airplane or a boat and take a cruise. Yes, they might use some of it for the grand kids education, etc. But the thing I'm trying to get across is that if we don't get the cars into being kept and collected, the hobby will run out of some of the stock older cars, etc, very soon. Kids today under 30 won't know or care of the value of a numbers-matching Road Runner or a Model A. They just buy a kit car and have one titled and assembled the way they have to have it. Most people under 50 can't stand the thought of drum brakes with a single master cylinder system, bias ply tires, no power steering, etc. And today's soccer moms wouldn't drive a 1957 Bel-Air with no power, no air condition, no FM across the street. We that still have them, notice I didn't say own them, have to get things ready to be handed down to youth that has been schooled or appreciates the history of the automobile. As long as I'm up on the old car soap box, I'm still seeing the majority of us over 60 grey hairs just sitting in our chairs, behind our cars at shows, shooting the poop with the same buddies that we have breakfast with four times a week anyway. And then, we completely ignore anyone under age 40 that walks by our car. Plus, I've been hearing us oldies making comments like…… those inked, low income kids can't afford a car anywhere near what mine is worth, so I'm not going to even acknowledge they exist. And it's even worse if their wife or gal friend has pink or purple hair, etc. We sure seem to have appointed ourselves master judges at who is good enough for us to get out of our chair and offer conversation to them and make them feel welcome to the hobby of old cars. Come on, we all didn't begin this hobby with mint expensive rides. I'm not saying we should hand them the keys and let them take our numbers-matching Hemi for a ride down a dirt road or ask them to have dinner at our home. But, golly, let's at least recall how we started and give them a little information and a smile so maybe they will enter the hobby at some time in their life. After all, us baby boomers won't last forever and there simply are not as many younger people out there -period. The hobby needs as much
Scooter scooter4422@comcast.net Last but absolutely not least: Scary facts I found to do with our hobby. In the USA as of 2016, 28.5 % of ALL high school seniors do NOT have a drivers license! And this next fact is the real doom to our hobby. 32.4 % of ALL young adults between the ages of 19 and 24 do NOT have drivers licenses and do NOT plan on ever getting one!!! So with that number we also have had way less total births than in the baby boomer era. So however many of total possible car hobby people that are out there the possible number has also been cut by almost 33 % WOW!

I started driving race cars in 1948 at Galveston, Texas 1/4 mile dirt and about 3 foot banks in the turns. It was called Playland Park and had lots of entertainment other than the dirt track. At the Playhouse they had stars such as Lefty Frizzell, Buck Owens, Hank Williams Sr. When I mention Galveston it brings back Wilma, who was always “open” when I phoned her and told her I’d be coming to town that Saturday night. She was a real fan, and loved the races. I had met her when she was a trophy girl and we had many a fine time. Now its not hard to enjoy a 36-24-35 with legs like Betty Grable and blue eyes that could hypnotize you when she smiled. Her favorite singer was Lefty Frizell who was booked there weekly for a while. Wilma was a expert roller skater and the local rink at Playland featured her many times. In those days (1948 & 1949) the AAA insured the racers (and the fans) and were AAA in their coverage. Their rule was, “no women in the Pits” I always picked Wilma up about 1:00 In the afternoon, race car on the back of my 1946 Ford Convertible, and we would head for the drive-in for lunch, before the race at 4:30 p.m. when the pit gate opened. (races were at 8 p.m.) When Wilma was the trophy girl the outfits she wore would make a married man cry! Short shorts, push up bra, long blonde hair, and those laughing blue eyes, and Betty Grable legs! Don’t forget 36-24 -35! You have to be made of stone not to take a look, and the guy or gal at the pits gate as I would drive in, with her, in the front seat, would look at me and I’d say: “Trophy Girl Tonite” They would nod and give us pit passes! This was about 4:30 and Wilma would help me some, then about 5 p.m. go up to the flagman's box (seated about 6) and wait to go out on the track for trophy presentation to the winner! No, never was me, I hadn't found out how to make the trophy dash yet) So after the races we take off, (after loading the race car on the trailer) and head for the drive in. I didn’t drink or smoke for 12 + years of driving. I’m sure most of you guys have nerves of steel, but when she learned her head on my shoulder, crossed those legs, (still had the trophy outfit on) it was real tough to keep my eyes on the road! She leaned forward and turned the radio on, that push up bra was really doing a great job as she leaned, the cleavage was terrific! She saw me looking down at her and smiled as she said “want to go to your motel and change first? You know I said you bet!!
1949 was a great year, I raced Galveston, about 6 times. Wilma was always there, and when Joe Lucy (the car owner) said “we are leaving for California next week”! What for? I asked, and he said Clay Smith is going to rebuild all 3 engines. I gave the news to Wilma that night, she smiled and said “you will be coming back won’t you”? “Sure” said I, and I meant it at that time. It’s 2018, that was 1949, guess I’ll never make it, but we all have a soft spot for certain people and certain places don’t we? The first time I ever heard of this band, called Hillbilly Casino. Was while sitting at a car show I listened to a CD, as we waited to see if the rain was going to cancel the car show. It did, So I headed to Layla’s on Broadway in Nashville Tennessee instead to check them out for myself! They just happened to be playing so why not! I Know I’m in store for a good show, but I couldn’t grasp it fully….. Are they Rockabilly, Honky Tonk, Blues, Punk, Rock & Roll?? What’s The Real American Music Revolution they talk about? With volumes of popular original songs, Hillbilly Casino makes Real American Music their own unique style while drawing their influences from legendary American artists, such as Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, The Blasters, Nick Curran and many more. With every member bringing their own special flavor to the band. Barnstorming daredevil front man, Nic Roulette, Bassist Geoff Firebaugh, aka "the Vanilla Gorilla", Guitarist Ronnie "Crutchero" Crutcher, and Mighty Matt Arnn on Drums. Each member is a master of their own craft, which brings together a recipe of what America is truly starving for: Real American Music!

So, after seeing this talented group of artists do a short sound check. They came alive on that small stage that night in Nashville, leaving me wanting more! Learning they play straight 4 hours for TIPS only at this venue! Then watching & enjoying this high-performance energy X 10 show LIVE. There is a REVOLUTION brewing America, and I have seen it firsthand. “We play off the feedback from crowd, they tell me later on down the road in Georgia, when I was able to meet them again playing at the Dixie Traven along with Hot Rod Walt & the Psycho Devilles. With many miles on the road, leaving families at home to pursue this life style. It’s a gift I’m glad they are able to share with us all, you just know it’s a passion they each have for this music to make it come ALIVE like they do at each show I have ever seen! After, talking with them while in Nashville almost a year later, they tell me “As for Playing The Nashville Boogie, it's an honor and a pleasure to be included on a bill with so many great bands. We are superduper excited to be returning our 3rd year in a row to such an awesome event.” They also tell me “We love opportunities like The Nashville Boogie brings to our town it allows us to play with other bands as sidemen… it's one of the coolest things about being local.
So now that I have seen this Real American Music band several times in several states. They are still on the top of my list to see Live at this year’s Nashville Boogie Weekender. You should add them to yours list also!! And Il look forward to seeing y’all at the Boogie! Stefanie Lea Xo

Racetrack Restart: The Hardway by; Janice Johnt Photography www.facebook.com/janicejohntpotography Ryan Milliken has been involved in almost every aspect of racing there is - from racing dirt track, circle track, jet skis, motocross, and drag racing he's done it all. Now he's adding track owner and operator to his resume with his 2017 ownership acquisition of Emerald Coast Dragway in Holt, Florida. “Getting myself involved in drag racing as an adult really started back the last few years ECD was open in the 2009-2011 era. I had a 4 door diesel truck that would run bottom 7's on street tires that I daily drove. The track was the fun place for me to be on the weekends when they were open, pushing the limits of that thing!” says Ryan. “I only entered a few races (and got my butt kicked) racing a few index classes and I entered pro once with it at a bracket race just to get some track time, never managed to make it past first round but it was fun none the less! Once the truck got to the point of having to either slow it down or cut it up and put a roll bar in it in order to go faster, I bought a single cab basic model truck of my daily driver and transferred all the hot rod parts over to it. Right about the time I did this and just about got the new actual “race truck” together that I went ahead and put a roll cage in, ECD shut down without notice. I was heartbroken.” In 2012 Ryan and his wife Leslie opened Hardway Performance which rapidly became a household name in the diesel performance industry. In 2014/2015, Hardway Performance had outgrown their current facility and Ryan and Leslie tried to unsuccessfully purchase Emerald Coast Dragway. “I didn't have the cash to buy it outright and the bank laughed me out of the building when I told them I wanted to buy a race track and build my performance/repair shop on the property. I also got wind that Ozzy Moya was looking into purchasing it, so I happily stepped aside and let them do their thing as I knew they would get it and turn it into what it needed to be turned into and I would just find a different piece of property to put my shop on,” said Ryan. By mid-2017 changes at Emerald Coast Dragway created a new opportunity for Ryan. “I went to my business partners (my wife Leslie, uncle Chris, brother Sean primarily) and presented the idea, we liked it and that along with the deep dark fear of the track potentially closing again if we didn't jump on it, we decided to take it and run,” said Ryan. 2018 is shaping up to be a banner year for Emerald Coast Dragway. February 3 kicks off racing season with the first South Coast Heads Up series race. South Coast Heads Up is a joint venture between Emerald Coast Dragway, Triple X Racing, and Cottonwood Dragway. The series will be running points for 28 Extreme (28X) with $4,000 guaranteed payout, 6.50 Index with $3,000 guaranteed payout, and Small Block Nitrous (SBNX) with $2,000 guaranteed payout. 28X is quickly becoming a fan favorite! February 10 will host the Southern Outlaw Gassers' Gasser Grudge Fest. The Southern Outlaw Gassers packed the house for their Gasser Blowout 5 with some of the top Gasser and Nostalgia cars in the Southeast. Gasser Grudge Fest is a race not to miss! February rounds out with Tri-County Grudge Fest (no time, no prep, instant green) on February 24. Let one of your 2018 resolutions be to support your local dragstrip! Ryan and the staff of Emerald Coast Dragway have the calendar lined up with great events and would love to see you out there. Southland Dragway Reunion South Louisiana is packed with some of the most talented and creative people in the drag racing world. A large number of these racers attended the Southland Dragway Reunion in Houma, LA. Over 200 race and show cars attended on a misty Saturday morning, December 2, 2017. Another 125 classic cars had to park outside the car show area. Professional racers Antron Brown, Mark Oswald, Leonard Hughes (Candies and Hughes), Preston Davis (Tennessee Boweevil), and John Peters (Freight Train) attended along with over 3000 spectators. There was also a cackle-fest with some well known front engine dragsters. Steve Robicheaux had an idea and with a group of spirited volunteers created a unique south Louisiana car show.
Southland Dragway – Houma, LA Located in Houma, LA, on West Park Avenue on a bayou, the track opened on July 1, 1969. It was built on land which previously was a golf driving range, and the track office was the former pro shop. Ralph Baker was a racer who worked for Luke Grezzafi in the interstate pipeline business. Luke agreed to fund the track, which was modeled after Orange County (CA) Raceway, with covered grandstands, an octagonal-shaped tower, and a scoreboard to display the E.T. and mph on each run. It operated on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, and featured class racing along with booked in Top Fuel and Funny Car shows, Division 4 WCS points meets, and even a Soap Box Derby. Division 4 Pro racers included hometown Candies and Hughes, Gene Snow, Mike Burkhart, Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen, the Blue Max and many more. Sportsman stand outs like Charlie Kruse and Sammy Cunningham, and local favorites like Jimmy Faul, Frank Carmena, and Earlis Alleman helped make Southland a jewel in the Division 4 crown. Glenn Menard opened the facility in the summer of 1969, then returned to college. Dave McClelland was lured from the television studio in Shreveport to manage the track from 1969 until he moved to Dallas International in the spring of 1971, when Menard returned to the track. In 1972 Baker bought the track from Grezaffi, and operated it with his sons. Mr. Pate bought the track and operated it for two years. Norman “Moose” Pearah, the Hall of Fame track operator, leased it from Pate for three seasons. Later in the 70’s a group of Houma racers headed by Joe Teuton revived the track, installed lights for night racing and operated it for one rain-filled season. Source: www.division4halloffame.com
“I would stand at the finish line and wave a giant flag, said Jeff Teuton. “That’s how we judged who won. That race track was ahead of its time. There are a lot of good memories from those days.” source: JEREMY SHAPIRO / Senior Staff Writer www.houmatoday.com

Paul Kiraly had a dream - a classic, genuine, Playboy Pink Mustang. Don’t get me wrong, Paul loves all 1960s Mustangs. He’s been collecting them since he bought his first 1967 model back in 1996. He’s had dozens of them, in various states of disrepair, along with tons of parts therefor, over these 20+ years. But owning a Playboy Pink was his dream. Paul knows first-hand that dreams can come true. As you know, Hugh Hefner founded Playboy Magazine. What you may not know is that before there was a Playboy Magazine, there was a Playboy Automobile company. Hefner was friends with a Playboy Automotive employee who suggested that, since his magazine was geared toward men, as the cars from the automotive company had been, that he should consider the name “Playboy” for his publication. The rest is history. The auto company was founded in 1947 in Buffalo, New York and existed only four years. It produced 97 cars during that time, including the 40-horsepower, 4-cylinder Continental. The Continental advertised its top speed at 75 miles per hour. With a wheelbase of only 90 inches and a length of just 156 inches, it was a very small car. In 1953, Hefner founded his magazine and certainly wouldn’t be described as small. Hefner’s very first edition included uncovered photos of Marilyn Monroe, but he soon discovered that he didn’t have to pay famous women to pose. By featuring a “Playmate of the Month,” he was able to get the “girl next door” to want to pose for him. His marketing ideas turned some of those girls into huge stars – Pamela Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith, Barbie Benton, Jenny McCarthy to name a few. By 1957, Hefner introduced the first Playmate of the Year, Lisa Winters. Lisa only won a title and some fame, but all changed in 1964. A first-generation 1964½ Mustang was given as the first prize to Donna Michelle, the 1964 Playmate of the Year – new, sporty and pink with a 289 V8 engine. The car’s beautiful pink color was a special-order which became known as Playboy Pink or Playmate Pink. The color was only available on first-generation Mustangs and was Hugh Hefner’s own formula. The color mix belonged to him, not Ford. Due to the press received from that Playboy Playmate car being seen in magazines, on television and talked about on the radio, Ford sold 2 million Mustangs that year – the most any model ever sold by any manufacturer up to that time. Thereafter, Ford and Ford powered cars were frequently awarded to the Playmate of the Year. Ford understood that there was power in marketing their cars using sex and sex appeal, so they took full advantage of it. Playboy awarded many other cars over the years, but none caught the eye of Paul Kiraly as that first Playboy Pink Mustang did. Paul’s dad, Keith Kiraly, has owned Rock-N-Roll Auto Sales in Marrero, Louisiana, for many years, so Paul has grown up around cars. His appreciation of the Mustang goes back to 1996 and his senior year of high school when he bought his first 1967 Mustang which was a straight 6 with 3-speed transmission. He bought the car and then took driving lessons to learn to operate a standard. He drove that car to Chicago in 1997 where he lived until 2001. While there, he had as many as 12 Mustangs dating from 1964 to 1968 parked in his yard and the basement of the property was packed full of Mustang parts including 250 car windows. In one of his constant searches of the internet and countless car magazines and publications, Paul learned of a 1967 Playboy Pink Mustang convertible in New Jersey. He contacted the car’s owner and was sad to learn that it was not for sale. After that, he contacted that car’s owner at least twice a year to see if he wanted to sell and the owner promised to let him know if he was ever ready to part with it.

In 2002, Paul moved back home to Louisiana, bringing a U-Haul full of car parts and a Lime Gold 1968 Mustang Convertible with him. The U-Haul was so heavy that it took three jacks to enable him to lift it enough to change a flat tire. Once back, he deposited all of his treasures at his parent’s home and went to work selling cars for his dad. In 2011, Paul took a job with a friend of his father who specialized in rent-to-own vehicles. Later that year, he got a call from the man in New Jersey. He finally wanted to sell his Playboy Pink Mustang so he could buy a piece of real estate he wanted. Paul quickly obtained a stack of photos of the car, verified that it was an original Playboy Pink, negotiated a price of $18,000 and approached his new boss for a loan. With collateral in place, that loan of $10,000 allowed him to buy and ship his dream car from New Jersey to New Orleans. He shipped a check for the car along with a GPS unit to the seller, equipped with a battery to operate it, so he could track the car all along its journey home. He wasn’t going to lose track of his dream now.
Paul’s Playboy Pink when she arrived March 31, 2012.
Once the car arrived, Paul went to work. Although she was sound, she needed work. Over the next six months, he completely rebuilt the motor and transmission and restored the upholstery and paint. Paul contacted every company he could and still didn’t find the copyrighted Playboy Pink paint formula. Finally, an old man suggested he call Mike & Jerry’s Paint & Supply in Jefferson, Louisiana. That was the right call because they had the formula and Paul got his much sought-after paint. Paul made sure to preserve the original paint in places not readily seen to be able to confirm it as the car’s factory paint should that be necessary in the future. When Paul describes the Playboy Pink, he says it resembles the color of cotton candy but, since it has no black in the formula, the color adjusts based on the available light. The brighter the light, the lighter the pink appears. While doing his restoration, Paul sent a bolt from his car to Marti Auto Works in Arizona and had both his car and her color authenticated. Marti has access to the entire Ford production database of all vehicles from 1967 to present and produce the renowned Marti Report which authenticates Ford vehicles.

Paul’s Marti Report and his research revealed: 472,209 1967 Mustangs were produced. Of those, 44,621 were Convertibles. Of those, 28,174 had 289.2V Engines. Of those, 22,304 had Automatic Transmissions. Of those, 280 were Painted with Special Paint. Of those, 22 had Black Décor Bucket Seats. Of those, 6 had Tilt-Away Steering Wheels. Of those, 2 had Exhaust Emission Controls. Of those,1 had a Console. #7R03C225025, Paul’s Mustang, is that one car. (Continued on page 50)

Paul Kiraly and his 1967 Playboy Pink Mustang. The Playboy Pink Mustang - sometimes referred to as “Playmate Pink - was a special-order option available only on first generation Mustangs. Much misinformation surrounds the Playboy Pink Mustang, in part because of its rarity and because Ford did not retain documentation on them. Very few true Playboy Pinks survive today, and those that do are highly prized by collectors and almost never come up for sale. 48

blank, does not ensure you have a Playboy Pink Mustang. Dusk Rose and Playboy Pink are two entirely different color formulas. Playboy Pink was never offered in Ford sales brochures. In 1968, Ford bought the Playboy Pink paint formula from Playboy Magazine and in February 1968 painted a few cars in the color. The “Playboy” term was copyrighted, so Ford called the color “Passionate Pink.” Even though the formula is the same, the 1968 cars are not “Playboy Pink.” Only cars produced in that shade from 1965 – 1967 are true Playboy Pink Mustangs.
Stripped down.
Paul has learned that Playboy Pink is a color you either love or hate – there is no middle ground. He says that men tend to ignore his car, while women love it. Ladies want to be photographed with it and enjoy looking at it. Maybe, if more men knew just how special Paul’s car is, they, too, would spend more time ogling it. It was noticed by the local film industry and his Mustang was featured in street scenes in the 2015 film, Mississippi Grind, starring Ryan Reynolds. In 2014, Paul brought his car to the 50th Mustang Anniversary at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. He was given a prime showcase viewing location for his beautiful car, right at the entrance where all the other participants had to drive past him to enter – an honor for his very special car. While there, someone made him the highest purchase offer he has had to date for his car, but he rejected it. He hasn’t yet been able to put a price on his dream.
Primed and ready for paint.
Today, Paul owns his own used car business, 1st Class Auto Sales. He has five Mustangs parked on the lot waiting his restoration. He is currently restoring a 1965 Mustang hard top for his son, a high school student. He is hopeful that his son will enjoy and appreciate vintage Mustangs as much as he does and want to preserve them, too. After all, he has a lot of cars and parts to share.
(Continued from page 47)
Paul’s Mustang also has a power convertible top, glass rear window (not the standard plastic), 14-inch upgraded PR wide side wall tires, Selectaire Conditioner (very rare and expensive at the time), AM radio (not standard equipment), tinted glass, Interior and Exterior Décor Group including turn signals on the hood, chrome wheel well skirts, chrome door lip molding, pop open gas cap, the rear chrome bumper guards were replaced with bumper guards painted to match the car, luggage rack, chrome strip on the upper part of the seats, hardened molded seat backs, leather automatic shifter knob, lights in the doors with a special door panel, aluminum brushed dash trim, soft padded rear seat side panels with ash trays, deluxe seat belts and wheel covers. When purchased, the buyer chose to pay an additional cost of $146.70 ($1,082.79 in today’s money) to have the car shipped by rail car from Los Angeles to Pasadena, California – less than 15 miles! During his research, Paul discovered that Hugh Hefner bought two Playboy Pink Mustang convertibles in 1967 from a California dealer. He is sure that his car is one of those two despite the lack of definitive documentation to support that belief. Given where his car was purchased, the extensive list of options on his car, and the amounts paid for the car and the additional short-distance shipping, the buyer definitely had disposable income. Paul thinks that buyer was Hefner. The Playboy Pink color was not shown on the VIN plate. It was left blank by the factory. He says that Ford hid the production of the Playboy Pink cars and destroyed all records of them as soon as they were paid for. Very few Playboy Pink Mustangs are in existence. If the car was ordered with all of the options, the original base price almost doubled, making the one car valued at the price of two at the time. Most Playboy Pink Mustangs were hardtops with only an extreme few fastbacks and convertibles. In late 1966, Ford started offering Dusk Rose as a color option. On June 1, 1967 the Dusk Rose color code was the letter “S.” Playboy Pink Mustangs were never given a color code through the end of their production in 1967. Just because the color code is

We are in contact with Harley Davidson dealerships and other locations to organize as rally points. Keep checking the website (daytonathunderrun.com) for more information and updates. The Wounded Warrior Project is a worthy cause and Daytona Thunder Run stands behind it completely. With all causes it needs support, Daytona Thunder Run is looking for sponsors for the event. Even though we are in talks with some, we can use others, contact us for more information at daytonathunderrun@yahoo.com Daytona Thunder Run is not an organization, association, corporation, or club. Daytona Thunder run is nothing more than a name given to a motorcycle run starting in California and ending in Florida for the sole purpose of raising donations for Wounded Warrior Project. Remember the ride is free, but donations to Wounded Warrior Project is the goal, you decide what you want to donate or not. Even though registration is not a show stopper to ride along, please complete the form so that we can have accurate headcounts, and correct sizes for those who wish to purchase shirts. All riders (including passengers) will be required to turn in a waiver form. This ride is to be fun and cause worthy, some things that don't have to be said but we will anyhow, is BE SAFE! We as a rolling group of motorcycle riders are BIG and BAD‌.. but that semi-truck is bigger and badder. Always be courteous, share the road, this is not a race!! Ask yourself, CAN I DO THIS? Are your skills good enough? Am I in good enough health to participate? Does my bike get at least 200 miles per tank? If you have reservation as to any of these questions we encourage you to not participate in this ride. This is not a ride for the faint of heart, no frills, but hopefully a ton of thrills!!! GOOD NEWS, Daytona Thunder Run is proudly sponsored by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, Founder Russ Brown, the

original motorcycle lawyer who rides, started Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys in 1975. His lifelong passion for riding naturally led him to help fellow bikers who were being taken advantage of in personal injury cases. As his attention to bikers' rights and participation in political debates propelled him into the limelight, he quickly became known as the top motorcycle attorney in California, then the U.S. In 2013, Russ was honored to become the first lawyer ever to be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame. Even More GOOD NEWS, Daytona Thunder Run is proudly sponsored by Viking Bags. Viking Bags was conceived the same way almost every great idea is conceived; out of frustration with the current state of things & out of a desire to change things for the better. Thus began the journey of a thousand miles. One pile of carefully chosen leather and one extensively thought-out saddlebag design at a time. Ever since then, They have not looked back. Daytona Thunder Run is going to be Raffling off a Brand new Kawasaki Z125, The Tickets will be $10.00 for 1 and 5 tickets for $40.00. The Drawing will take place at the final stop, Daytona Beach Fl. (you do not have to be present to win.) DTR is also in need of anyone that would like to volunteer, If you would like to be a Sponsor or a Volunteer at any Start or Stop point along the route, we appreciate anyone that wants to support DTR and the Wounded Warrior Project. Q. Jackie Gleason recently revealed that he firmly believes in them and has actually seen them on at least two occasions. What are they? A. Charley Weaver: His feet.
Q. You've been having trouble going to sleep. Are you probably a man or a woman? A. Don Knott: That's what's been keeping me awake.
Q. According to Ann Landers, what are two things you should never do in bed? A. Paul Lynde: Point and laugh
Q. According to Cosmopolitan, if you meet a stranger at a party and you think that he is attractive, is it okay to ask him if he's married? A. Rose Marie: No. Wait until morning. Q. Which of your five senses tends to diminish as you get older? A. Charley Weaver: My sense of decency. Q. What are: 'Do It,' 'I Can Help,' and 'I Can't Get Enough’? A.
