Choose to rejoice today. You have the grace not to just endure this season, but to enjoy it. When you’re content, you see each day as a gift, you appreciate the people in your life, you thank God for what He’s given you, and that’s not only making you stronger—it's developing your character.. …… Joel Osteen So many things going on it’s hard to choose from all of them. Last month just whizzed by and here it is time to go to press with the July issue. June 19th was fathers day and I’m sure all of us let a few memories of our fathers pass thru our minds. I’d like to share the following story. My Dad taught me many lessons growing up, he spoke to me about honesty, respect and honor. One day when I was a young teen I ran out of gas in my car. I was a few miles from home and without a penny. I walked into a dinner and asked if I could use their phone to get my Dad to come and get me. They told me there was a payphone in the corner. I asked if they had a dime so I could make the call and they obliged. My Dad came, and the following day I picked up my car. When I got home from work the next day, my Dad asked me if I had stopped off to repay the dime I had borrowed. I told him "No" as I had not borrowed the money but they had just given it to me, and it was only 10 cents. He told me to stop by and return it, then he told me why: "If you don't return that dime no one will mind, no

one will even notice. However, if you make an effort to return it, then, they will notice your actions, they will all notice. They will see that you are an honest man and they will remember you and your good example. If you ever need a favor again they will be happy to help you." He went on to say, "It takes a lifetime to build a good reputation, but only a moment to lose it." He was in business for years and was very respected by all. Now he is living with me and my family because he needs constant care. People don't talk much these days about honor and the value of a good name, but I am proud of my good name and thankful to my Dad for it. Now that story was not about my father and it didn’t happen to me, but my dads lectures were similar. Times, toys and music are different today but the lesson we pass down are still the same. ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Here are a few e-mails….. Jimbo, Here is an interesting story! I don't usually like these heartwarming stories, but this one is truly interesting… In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Mbembe approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Mbembe worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Mbembe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Mbembe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day. Twenty years later, Mbembe was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Mbembe and his son Tapu were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Mbembe, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Mbembe couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. Mbembe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Mbembe's legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly. Probably wasn't the same elephant. Jimbo, Only you OLD GUYS (and a few younger gals) will appreciate this.

JULY 2016

The proud owner of a magnificent 1956 Chevrolet convertible, wrote to say he had restored the car to perfection over the last few years, and sent this… On a very warm summer afternoon he decided to take his car to town. It needed gas, as the gauge was practically on empty, but he wanted ice cream too, so he headed first to his favorite ice cream shop. He had trouble finding a parking space and had to park the car down a side street. He noticed a group of young guys standing around smoking cigarettes and eyeing his car rather covetously. He was a bit uneasy leaving it there, but people often take interest in such an old and well-preserved car, so he went off to enjoy his ice cream. The line at the ice cream shop was long and it took him quite a while to return to his car. When he did, his worst fears were realized… his car was gone. He called the police and reported the theft and then went back and bought a quart of pistachio ice cream. About ten minutes later the police called him to say they had found the car abandoned near a gas station a few miles out of town. It was unharmed and he was relieved. It seems just before he called, the police had received a call from a young woman who was an employee at a self-service gas station. She told them that three young men had driven in with this beautiful old convertible. One of them came to the window and prepaid for 20 dollars of gas. Then all three of them walked around the car. Then they all got in the car and drove off, without filling the tank. The question is, why would anybody steal a car, pay for gas that they never pumped, and then abandon the car later and walk away? Answer: They couldn't find where to put the gas! You must have several years under your belt to appreciate this! Ahhh yes, the good old days! larry@heritageinstyler Jimbo, The biggest lie I tell myself is, "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it." Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet. Old age is coming at a really bad time. My people skills are just fine, it's my tolerance to idiots that needs work. Lord grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change things I can and the friends to post my bail when I finally snap. When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment, now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees. I don't trip over things, I do random gravity checks. Teach your daughter how to shoot, because a restraining order is just a piece of paper. The kids text me 'plz' which is shorter than please. I

text back 'no' which is shorter than 'yes'. Even though duct tape can't fix stupid, it can muffle the sound. I don't have grey hair, I have 'wisdom highlights', I'm just very wise. I'm going to retire and live off of my savings, not sure what I'll do that second week. Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice. Oops, did I roll my eyes out loud? Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes, come out wrinklefree and three sizes smaller. GptTeeByrd@ THANKS TO EVERYONE that attended Hot Rod Hang Out Night at Rebel Dip. June 10th the Official car count was 60. Many old friendships were renewed with hugs everywhere and new friendships were established as well. Linda Bottin Latil says, "Coach Rouse, Kathy, Pam and staff, thanks for letting us invade your space and for your hard work in keeping us fed. We appreciate you all!" It was like the Friday Night hangout after the ballgame only decades later. A GREAT TIME, good food, good friends, good music and cool cars......it don't get no better than that folks !! ….. Eddie Klein - He Man Woman Haters & Rebel Queens Yes Dear No Dear Club PS. On Friday, July 8 we will have a 2nd Friday Hot Rod Hangout at Sno Shack U.S. Hwy 53 & County Farm Rd. Gulfport, MS 39503 starts at 6:30 pm.. In closing…… remember this whether a man winds up with a nest egg, or a goose egg, depends a lot on the kind of chick he marries. When a man marries a woman, they become one; but the trouble starts when they try to decide which one. Trouble in marriage often starts when a man gets so busy earnin' his salt that he forgets his sugar. Too many couples marry for better, or for worse, but not for good. On anniversaries, the wise husband always forgets the past - but never the present. And if a man has enough horse sense to treat his wife like a thoroughbred, she will never turn into an old nag. It’s a foolish husband that says to his wife, "Honey, you stick to the washin', ironin', cookin' and scrubbin'. No wife of mine is gonna "work"." That’s why many girls like to marry a military man - he can cook, sew, and make beds and is in good health, and he's already used to taking orders. Some people I know try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Getting older is filled with challenges. It’s summer hot as blazes but filled with things I want to get done. And it seems the days are not cooperating with my to do list. How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? I figure old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald, they don't recognize you. Till next month…… Jimbo

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage - July2016 Chases big truck project has been somewhat of a focus for the past few years now. Hey I never said I was fast. Between the domestic activities the Queen has once again set out for me and the various car shows/benefits I go to I stay fairly busy. I must also admit I get easily distracted as well. I think at times I have OGADD, old guys attention deficit disorder. Just a few examples, I put something down only to not find it again without retracing my previous steps, also the phone can ring and after discussing important things with a friend on solutions to most if not all of the worlds problems, I find it somewhat difficult to go back to whatever it was I was doing. Seems it just takes longer to do what I used to do in say an hour. I am sure many of you can relate. I am also convinced there are some tiny folks living in my garage that routinely hide things and move things about after I go in for the evening. I also seem to need about four of everything I own in my toolbox, one to keep in the box, one to loan, and two more spares for the little people to play hide and seek with. All of this also leads to many moments of starts and stops and wasted minutes and sometimes hours. I have also learned the clock moves increasingly faster with age as well. I get a little flustered at times with all of this wasted activity. I also have discovered that printed instructions if you can find them at all are getting printed out with smaller fonts. And music needs to be played a little louder just to be able to hear the high notes. Just wondering is it just me or are others having these same issues. I am not complaining though, just making observations and I guess excuses for my own lack of productivity at times. At the rate I am going it seems my grandson will be driving age before I get his big truck on the road. I do believe we may get the motor to at least run before the end of this year. Seems like I can or may get more done during the hottest part of the summer, when the car show season slows down some for the mostly hot months of July and August. Not as many distractions and a little easier to focus on what needs to be done next. Also I enjoy the short period of fall we get down here. Of course the beginning of October for most of us is filled with either volunteering with various clubs or just running the Gulf Coast of Mississippi during Cruisn’ the CoastŽ. Also during the summer I try to help out by spending time with my three grandchildren. The two wild boys and now a baby girl. I generally try to get the boys here with us, but I let the Queen take care of the baby girl, the future heir to the Queens throne. She is just too little for me right now. Those boys both enjoy riding in the hotrod and cutting up around the house. They both have little electric cars and each have claimed tools and tool boxes. My daughter vowed the youngest boy would not be mechanically inclined, its too late he too is a miniature gearhead at just 3 yrs old. I am also willing to bet with 2 older brothers and a Dad and Grandpa that messes with all things automotive, that baby girl wont be a stranger or helpless around cars. Another example of distraction, but this is the greatest form of distraction, one I dearly welcome with open arms. I guess that's the reason they are called Grand Children, for they truly are Grand and most enjoyable. Now what was I doing a few minutes ago? Oh wait the phone is ringing, gotta go. Happy Birthday to the, Good Old U.S. of A. and God Bless. Later Gizmo

One day, while walking through the Garden of Eden, Adam looked up to the Heavens and spoke to God. "Father, this place is great, but there is one thing missing," he said. "What is that my son?" God asked. "Well, it would be nice to have a mate: I'm awfully lonely down here and all the other animals have mates but me. All I'm asking for is: a creature more beautiful than the Garden, one who has a sex drive like mine, never has a headache, will cook, clean and be at my beck and call morning, noon and night," pleaded Adam. "Wow, that's a tall order, though perhaps I have just such a creature in mind. But," said the Lord, "it's going to cost you big time." "Oh yeah, how much?" said Adam "An arm and a leg," replied God. Adam thought this over for quite some time and then asked: "Well, what can I get for a rib?"

A lady motorist was about two hours from Hattiesburg when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, "Are you going to Hattiesburg?" "Sure am," answered the cute blonde, "do you need a lift?" "Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I've got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the Hattiesburg Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me? I'll give you $200 for your trouble." "I'd be happy to," said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of her car and carefully strapped into their seat belts. Off they went. Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of Hattiesburg when suddenly he was horrified!! There was the cute little blonde walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the girl. What the heck are you doing here?" he demanded, "I gave you $200 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo." "Yes, I know you did," said the blonde," but we had money left over--so now we're going to the Aquarium in New Orleans.

Simple Truth THE WAY I SEE IT

I Am Your Worst Nightmare…... I am a BAD American……. I am George Carlin. I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some mid level governmental functionary be it Democratic or Republican! I'm in touch with my feelings and I like it that way, damn it! I think owning a gun doesn't make you a killer, it makes you a smart American. I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything. I believe that if you are selling me a Big Mac, try to do it in English. I think fireworks should be legal on the 4th of July. I think that being a student doesn't give you any more enlightenment than working at Blockbuster. In fact, if your parents are footing the bill to put your pansy ass through 4 years plus of college, you haven't begun to be enlightened. I believe everyone has a right to pray to his or her God when and where they want to. My heroes are John Wayne, Babe Ruth, Roy Rogers, and whoever canceled Jerry Springer. I don't hate the rich. I don't pity the poor. I know wrestling is fake and I don't waste my time arguing about it. I think global warming is a big lie. Where are all those experts now, when I'm freezing my ass off during these long winters and paying, paying, paying? I've never owned a slave, or was a slave, I didn't wander forty years In the desert after getting chased out of Egypt. I haven't burned any witches or been persecuted by the Turks and neither have you! So, shut-the-Hell-up already. I want to know which church is it exactly where the Reverend Jesse Jackson practices, where he gets his money, and why he is always part of the problem and not the solution. Can I get an AMEN on that one? I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry ass if you're running from them. I also think they have the right to pull your ass over if you're breaking the law, regardless of what color you are. And, no, I don't mind having my face shown on my drivers license. I think it's good.....and I'm proud that "God" is written on my money. I think if you are too stupid to know how a ballot works, I don't want you deciding who should be running the most powerful nation in the world for the next four years. I dislike those people standing in the intersections trying to sell me crap or trying to guilt me into making "donations" to their cause. These people should be targets. I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes two parents. And what the hell is going on with gas prices... again? If this makes me a BAD American, then yes, I'm a BAD American.

Choosing to sell your car on your own instead of to a dealership can be a good deal — especially if your car has high value. Follow these tips for conducting a safe transaction. Choose a Sales Process You can use newspaper ads and/or various online services to post photos and a description of your car. Some services, like CarMax, purchase your vehicle and resell it for you, and others, like AutoTrader, allow you to buy ad space to help sell your car. Another option includes listing your car on local classifieds sites. Regardless of how you choose to sell your car, always watch out for scammers. Find a Good Buyer Speak with serious buyers over the phone to help gauge their interest, discuss their payment plan and set up a test drive. Kelley Blue Book recommends not selling to an out-of-state buyer, as it’s often safer to sell your car to someone who can meet you in person. Host a Safe Test Drive Once you’ve found a potential buyer, schedule a test drive. Follow these tips: Never go on a test drive alone — ask a friend to join you. Schedule the test drive during the day. Meet the driver in a populated area. Check the buyer’s license and proof of insurance before they get behind the wheel. The test drive is not the time to take payment, but you can negotiate a price. Tip: List your car for a slightly higher price, but keep your bottom line price in mind as you negotiate suggests Consumer Reports. Manage a Secure Transaction The safest place to exchange payment is at the buyer’s bank. Don’t sign or hand over the vehicle title to the buyer until you have received the agreed-upon payment in full.

"Today Alex went to the DMV to renew his license. When he was told to go have his picture taken he noticed that there were some men having their picture taken, these men were wearing turbins on there heads. Alex was asked to take his hat off to have his picture taken. He said "no", and "no" again when asked the second time. When he was asked why he would not remove his hat he said, 'Those men didn't remove their head wear, I shouldn't either.' It was explained that this was their attire and their religion. Alex told the DMV person that what he had on was his attire and when he entered the Marines he declared an oath to the USA, and one nation under God, so that his oath was under God so just as good as his religion. Well, the DMV people didn't know what to do, they spoke to supervisors and called Sacramento. Alex was told, after an hour, that he could wear his hat for the picture and if there were any problems they would let him know and he could appeal their decision. He told them if there was a problem he WILL appeal it. Alex feels no one has more right to display their head gear then a Veteran or active service person. When he left several employees at the DMV clapped quietly for him. He has spoken to few other Veterans and they plan to do the same." Maybe ALL Military Vets should all do this! Semper Fi! The Year Was 1958 I was taking a vacation trip with my maternal grandparents. My grandfather had a brand new 1958 Chevrolet station wagon. It was loaded with all the goodies. It was equipped with full coil springs and the ultimate of a real air ride with level air suspension. Chevrolet’s advertisement said: “Bumps get swallowed up in cushions of air and your Wagon automatically keeps its normal level, regardless of how heavy the load.” My grandparents were anxious to experience these cushions of air going through the mountains. I was just happy to go explore new places. Our destination was the Gulf coast somewhere in Alabama. This was a long trip from Muncie, Indiana. We packed the car the night before and the alarm clock was set for four o’clock. Four o’clock was the proper time to leave for any trip my grandparents took. Somewhere in the traveler’s hand book it was written in stone. If you are taking a family trip, you are required to leave at 4:00 A.M. with your thermos of coffee, your red plaid or your green and blue plaid wool blanket in a pouch in the car, a metal cooler stocked with 7-UP and Barq’s root beer, the gas tank full, and you absolutely must leave on time. No dawdling! Our destination was the Gulf coast somewhere in Alabama. So off we went sleepily on our way in the shiny new car. It was dark! Poppie had his maps ready to go, but he knew exactly where he was headed at this moment. Nannie was sitting in the passenger seat ready to read the maps when necessary. The thermos of coffee was handy in case anyone needed a jolt to wake up. I was in the back of the station wagon sharing space with the luggage. I had a bed made back there in order to sleep. The coffee can to pee into was on the floor in the back seat. Our adventure was underway.

We took highway 67 out of Muncie to Indianapolis, Indiana. It was a two lane road, of course, and there was nothing much to see in the dark. We turned onto highway 31 to head for Kentucky. We were in Columbus, Indiana for breakfast. Everything was going along fine. I spent my time watching for the Burma Shave signs, the Rock City signs, and other signs of the era. We stayed at the Wig Wam Village in Cave City, Kentucky our first night. The motel consisted of individual concrete teepees turned into motel rooms. They had a playground with swings and a slide to play on. I got to sleep on a rollaway bed. It was great! Four o’clock came mighty early the next morning, but we were on our way once again. This time we hadn’t gotten very far, when the station wagon got lower and acted like it had no shock absorbers. I am here to tell you that these may be called the hills of Kentucky, but they are mighty unpleasant with no shock absorbers! There were no cushions of air available, as the advertisement professed. It was too early to stop at a gas station, so we drove on. It was an interesting ride! The car would bottom out on bumps and going over a hill was like riding on a roller coaster. We finally found an Exxon filling station open and pulled in. The mechanic on duty looked at the suspension, and scratched his head. He said, “Y’all I don’t know nuthin ‘bout this. Take it down the road a piece to Paul’s Gulf Station. He’ll fix you up.” So we limped on down the road to Bobby’s. Bobby had never seen anything like this either, but he was willing to work on it. When he opened the hood, he discovered a broken fan belt. He didn’t have one to fit, so he told us to run on to the big city to the Chevrolet dealer. They would have it. So down past the pastures, we finally bounced in to Nashville, Tennessee to the Chevrolet dealer. They didn’t have a belt to fit it!!! More head scratching went on. We went from station

to station and finally located a belt at Jim’s Pure Oil station that would work. Sort of like what we hot rodders do when we are trying to find belts for our cars with just the measurement. No one knew how to work on this new suspension system, so fan belt/ air ride belt in place, off we went again. This crummy belt broke four more times, and finally Poppie bought them two at a time, now that he had the part number.

We stopped at many attractions along the highway that helped to break up the trip for me. We stayed in motels that were individual cabins, and ones that were long lines of rooms linked together. Finally we reached our destination, the Gulf of Mexico. Poppie had business to attend to in Mobile. You didn’t think this trip would end as just a vacation, did you? The Nomad wagon went into the Chevrolet dealership for a complete revamping of the air ride system.

Nannie and I visited Dauphin Island. I loved the huge waves and all the things to explore there. I didn’t want to leave, but all good things must come to an end. With the 1958 Chevrolet Nomad wagon allegedly repaired, and the automatic ride height restored, we sadly headed back to Muncie, Indiana. This will hopefully remind you of trips you took with your families. The location is not important. The important part is the experience of sharing time with your family. In today’s fast paced society, we need to remember to slow down and spend time with family. Time goes by quickly, but memories last for generations. “Perhaps the greatest social service that can be rendered by anybody to this country and to mankind is to bring up a family.” – Bernard Shaw.

veryone was wondering if Burning Up The Beaches’ new car show location would live up to the old one. For 5 years the car show had been at the Boardwalk in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, a fabulous place for a car show. However, the show in 2015 had to turn away cars because every available spot had been used. So the charity group that runs the show, The Arc of the Emerald Coast, had to find a new location for the 2016 show. In steps Destin Commons. The move was going to mean a new location, new layout and the other fun things that must be altered when you change venues. The things they knew were the place was beautiful, the layout was workable, the shopping, the food options were superb and they could double the car entries, they had room to grow. Maxie, my Yorkie and I headed to Destin about 8 o’clock Friday morning, I tried to time it where we would hit Mobile after their morning rush hour, 6-9 and before the lunch traffic began. After stopping for breakfast, we hit Mobile about 10:30, it was Friday traffic, but probably the best it was going to be. I tried to navigate to Destin without hitting the toll booths, (the truck and the Hot Rod Show trailer together are $12) but I missed the exit. That put me on the toll road US 85 that dumped me off right at the show (Destin Commons), although $12 lighter. I should have used US 87, but I missed the exit. Destin Commons has a neat atmosphere and fantastic options on shopping with great stores… like Bass Pro Shops, Belks and over 100 other stores. Food options are good and there is even a movie theatre. Very cool shopping, a nice place to spend a day and a very nice place for a car show. Burning Up the Beaches is well staffed and organized with over 60 volunteers making up their manpower. Once into the spot they had reserved for the Hot Rod Show trailer, we quickly got set up and tested the sound system. The maintenance crew from Destin Commons were on site and ready, they were great in getting us power and even bringing out rubber bumpers to the cover my power lines from the trailer to the power plugs, all the while the GM of Destin Commons, Bob Perry and his executive staff were on site to make sure everything was completed and completed right, a very professional group. The atmosphere was electric for a Friday and I knew this venue was going to be great! We turned the Hot Rod Show music on to an autopilot program and headed for the hotel to get checked in. We stayed at the Ramada Inn in Fort Walton Beach this time, the same place we stayed last year. The hotel is older, but grand in scale. If you saw the video of the mountain waterfall on the Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show FaceBook page, that’s the place. Love the waterfall. (Please like my Face Book page if you go there to check out the waterfall.) We got settled in to the hotel room and took a nap. After the nap, I headed back to Destin Commons to kill the music I had playing at the show and then met my brother Ken and his wife Linda at the “Meet and Greet Party at Fudpucker’s” with free food for all the car show people. I got to see some old friends and meet some new ones. My brother and his wife had already met up with some of my friends and already buddied up with them, Terry and Lou Jean Webb from Wiggins, MS. They have a nice 1956 Chevy. After the party broke up I headed back to the hotel and Maxie and I headed out to the beach. There is so many options at the hotel, we chose the one of a deck overlooking the beach, (dogs aren’t allowed on the beach), we were close enough to see, hear and feel the charm of the ocean. The crashing of the waves on the

beach, its magical…it’s a great place to sit and think. Saturday morning I was up at 5 am to get ready…breakfast, a big bag of ice and a thermos of black coffee. Got to the venue about 8 am and it’s was already moving as volunteers and vendors were busy getting set up. We got the trailer up and going, although for the first time the music/CD side of the trailer stayed closed. We got the second sound system up and going. We came prepared for 3 sound systems, 2 was all we needed. We honored all Vietnam Era Veterans with a 20-minute montage of the music they listened to while serving on that war

front. Then it was time to start the show. We always kick off the show with our Veterans Tribute and what a tribute it was, over 100 Veterans passed by my microphone telling me their name, town and branch of service. Once that was completed the Veterans formed about 5 lines in front of the Hot Rod Show trailer, I handed one Veteran near the middle the big American flag I carry and we played the traditional version of the National Anthem. It was very emotional as a large group of people cheered the Veterans. The car show was electric. Destin Commons has a good crowd of shoppers any Saturday, add to that all the registered car folks and all the people that came to see the car show and it was an awesome crowd and event. The place was full of cars and people all day. We did Hot Rod Show Trivia and gave away a ton of door prizes. The show wound down at 4 pm and we gave away the last of the many door prizes, the Mega 50/50 jackpot which was $2,060 and the car show awards. As we were winding down the car show, the band, Emerald Gold started playing just down the street on the main stage, it was a seamless transition. This is the second year the band has played the event and they do a good job with the oldies. All the food vendors in Destin Commons had set up a big tent and free food for all the registered car show

attendees and their guest while listening to the band. The band also drew a good crowd. Donna Tashik and the Arc of the Emerald Coast group started the cash drawdown with nice door prizes along the way. They handed out $1,500. After everyone ate all they wanted, the food vendors were passing out the leftover sandwiches to all the people in the crowd. That put an exclamation mark on how the entire show went, just perfect. Put this car show on your list for 2017, May 4-7 and we’ll see you there, Lord willing and the creek don’t rise as they say. Burning Up The Beaches continues to be one of my favorite car shows of the year…a great car show… all for a great cause and the new venue is twice as good as the old one was…and I didn’t think that was possible! Get that Hot Rod out on the road and enjoy that 17 FOREVER state of mind! til next month… Terry terrymasonbarfield@gmail.com Facebook: Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show Hear a demo of the Hot Rod Show on Facebook by searching for Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show” and “Like Us” while you’re there or search for “Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show” on YouTube.com or contact Terry @ 228.669.8122

One of my best racing pals was Johnny Tolan, he was Rocky Mountain Midget Champ for 2 years in the 1950's. In addition, he also gained the title of National Midget Champion bestowed on him by AAA. (AAA is American Automobile Association) They are still in the insurance field, but they gave up all the racing endeavors at the end of 1955. United States Auto Club (USAC) see drivers logo of the membership pin. In those days (the 40's & 50's) a drivers membership was $25.00. Today they tell me its $250.00 per division! If you want to drive Midgets, Sprints, Stocks, its $750.00 total. I have no idea what an "Indy 500" license costs! (too much probably) As I have mentioned before, to run, or even to take a test, "500" drivers had to give an o.k. to the officials that they had run against you and said you were o.k. It didn't mater if it was Midgets, Sprints, or Stocks, they had to give the o.k. for the new driver to take his test! USAC had taken over in January 1956, and decided in March to have a Stock Car Division race in California. So, my phone rings, I'm living in Norwalk, Calif., and my neighbors Johnny Tolan, and Willie Swift. We are all living with in 6 blocks of each other, it was a new tract, it took $500 to get in, 3 bedroom home, bath, 120 ft. deep lot and 90 feet wide was $8500.00. So of course all us racer guys jumped on it! My payments were $35.00 a month, 2% interest! By the way, after Katrina, I applied for SBA loan, and received $25,000 at 2% (veterans), which really was surprising to see the rate was still the same. Anyway, USAC is starting a Stock Car Racing Division! This of course, isn't the usual kind of "Dirt Track" big (1 mile, oval) to little (1/2, 1/4/1/8) but racers don't care, how much? and where? So, USAC schedules a 200 lap stock car race, on the 1/4 mile at Saugus, CA. So, NASCAR says nothing because they didn't ever have a nationwide competitor before (in stock cars). As you know, NASCAR started in the late '48 or 1949 and really wasn't ready, or organized for competition! The automobile factories were immediately interested in the 1956 results. (win on Sunday, sell on Monday) So Ford knew (my opinion) that in 1956 the Ford (factory stock) couldn't touch the 1956 Chevrolet (factory stock). The racing division immediately hired Troy Ruttman, Dempsey Wilson, Eddie Grey, Danny Weinberg, Geo. Seegar, Bob Boquette, and Dempsey Wilson. These were all California NASCAR racers and were very used to running the 1/4 mile at Saugus. Johnny Tolan is running the Enoch (chevy distributer) Chevrolet, (see photo) and has to head for the midwest to help prepare the Trio Brass Foundry Special for the INDY 500. Johnny pulls up in my drive way, and walks into my garage, where I'm working on my midget, "Larry" he says, I've got to head east to the INDY 500 track, and Mauri Rose wants my stock car Chevy to be in the race at Saugus, Calif. Will you run the car out here when USAC has races? I look at Johnny and say Mauri Rose says its o.k. if I run It? Johnny smiles and says, "Mauri checked with Parsons, Hanks, and Bryan, and they, all gave an o.k. So your in. So, the 56' factory Chevy gets brought over from Johnny's house, to Enoch Chevrolet and gets Johnny's name painted out, and mine put on. I don't think much of stock car racing, but, money is money, and I had run Saugus many times in the midgets. (both dirt & pavement) It was origi-

nally a Dirt Rodeo Ring, you can see the stalls behind the car in the photo. So Harold Miller (Miller Crankshaft Co., Bellflower Ca.) did his "magic" on the engine and I set up the chassis for that flat 1/4 asphalt noaccount race track. Troy Ruttman had fast time (in a Ford) but in the main, Pat Flaherty went right to the front, and won the race. (200 laps) You will note he was driving the "Rush Chevrolet" who was the dealer. That race made Troy Ruttman go to Rush and get the ride. (California drivers were in demand for USAC (races) but that's another story. Pat Flaherty won that race, and went back to win the INDY 500 in the same year. I was there as chassis man, today they call them something else. Don Edmunds and I worked on the chassis of Pat Flahertys car, owned by John Zink, and we worked under A.J. Watson's supervision. We also worked on Ray Crawfords car. Harold & I then went to INDY for the "500". We loaded my midget on the trailer, hooked it up to my brand new 1956 Ford Station Wagon and headed for INDY. (that's another story) Pat Flaherty won INDY that same year, and he was a "flyer". In closing I might add that 200 laps on a flat paved 1/4 mile was not really good racing. I knew I had to keep the car from crashes, (and there were plenty that day), but you know who isn't going to make it, by the way they get in to the corners, and off the corners. I got $150.00 for 6th, in 1956 he minimum wage was $1.15 hr. The main thing, the car was straight and ready when Johnny got back. I was with Ernie Casale #41 at the speedway, and pitted next to us was Johnny Tolan & the 34 car. Not by accident Johnny drove for Ernie in '57. In the past 75 years, wars have been fought with Jeep and they’ve been fought over Jeep. The original four-wheel-drive utility vehicle took GIs across Europe in WWII, then was domesticated for sun and toil after the war. It provoked mergers between automakers and has become the brightest star in the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles family. “Jeep is bringing sales,” said Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst at Edmunds.com. “Their focus on smaller SUVs with respected fuel economy hits the sweet spot.” Jeep sold 1.2 million units last year for 22 percent growth globally and 25 percent domestically; Latin America experienced the largest Jeep growth, 135 percent. That’s not the entire hillside. According to Automotive News, Jeep increased its load as the best-selling brand within FCA. It totals more than Dodge and Chrysler combined. Acknowledging truth, FCA will drop the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart to expand Jeep production. “Globally, FCA doesn’t use Jeep as much as they should, but has aspirations to make it more of a global brand,” Caldwell added. “Jeep has a lot of brand equity and could expand more.” Even though the American icon is waving its flag across continents buying into the SUV craze that Jeep helped initiate so long ago, the history of Jeep is a global one. It all started with one simple little vehicle. The bugle called in July 1940 for a light reconnaissance vehicle that could carry 600 pounds, run 50 mph, have fourwheel drive and ground clearance of 6.25 inches. American Bantam answered. Concerned American Bantam couldn’t meet demand to deliver a prototype in under two months, the Army also gave contracts to Willys-Overland and Ford. More than 650,000 units were built during World War II. Willys wasted no time rolling out a “Civilian Jeep” in 1945. It had a four-cylinder engine and solid axles, but was dressed with brighter colors and nicer seats for the mass market. The larger CJ-5 (1955 to ‘83) and even larger CJ-7 (1976 to ‘87) hit streets and trails until surpassed by the Wrangler, which replaced the CJ series in 1987. Along the way, Jeep launched pickups such as the Gladiator (1963 to ‘87), a civil servant Dispatcher for the U.S. Postal Service and more luxurious models like the sporty Jeepster (1948 to ‘51) and the first true luxury SUV: the Wagoneer (1963 to ‘91). During the 1980s, Jeep thrived on suburb-ready SUVs such as the fourdoor Cherokee, which combined sedan comfort with all-road capability. Baby boomers loved them enough for Chrysler to launch the Grand Cherokee in 1993. Jeep endured through successive owners, many of whom consumed entire automakers to snag the profit-generating brand. Willys-Overland sold Jeep to ship builder Henry J. Kaiser in 1953. Jeep became part of American Motors in 1970, was purchased by Chrysler in 1987, and has been controlled by DaimlerChrysler, Cerberus Capital, and now FCA. Under FCA, smaller crossovers such as today’s Renegade and Cherokee have elevated Jeep to new heights. Yet a look beneath the

fenders confirms the brand’s parentage. Wrangler is the fully framed off-roader it always was. Grand Cherokee shares basic architecture with the Mercedes GLE SUV, developed when Daimler controlled Chrysler. Fiat donated architecture and powertrains for the Cherokee and Renegade subcompact crossover, the latter built in Italy alongside the 500X subcompact crossover. It’s a melting pot of ethnicity, bolstering a broad portfolio. “Jeep is a good complement with Fiat vehicles,” said Jim Morrison, who was director of the Jeep brand from 2009 until March 1, 2016, when he took over the Ram brand. “The Fiat guys are really good at packaging components and small displacement engines, as demonstrated by Renegade. It’s also an efficient business model.” Sales are strong despite quality issues that have placed it near the bottom of J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study. The study highlights real-world experiences of consumers reporting defects after three years of ownership. Issues have ranged from infotainment confusion to transmission failure. In 2013, Jeep was fourth from the bottom with 178 defects per 100 vehicles. It placed third from bottom with 197 defects in 2015, but improved to 181 for the recent 2016 report. “We recognize what they’re saying,” Morrison said. “We continue to improve our vehicles and listen to customers. Still, we’ve had six consecutive years of growth.” Considering rising sales, do ratings matter? “Jeep is kind of a Teflon brand,” Caldwell said. “It takes criticism, but with record market share, doesn’t really affect them.” There’s something about Jeep that bonds enthusiasts. “It’s the people you meet,” said Pearse Umlauf, vice president of Jeep Jamboree USA. “And the ability to go places normal vehicles can’t. There’s a camaraderie.” Jeep Jamboree events on weekends from March to October take owners and their Jeeps off-road to put them through their paces on notoriously tough trails such as the boulder-studded Rubicon Trail in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. “I remember first driving a Jeep Cherokee across a river, up the bank, through trees, and thinking, ‘Holy cow, look what I just drove up!’” Umlauf recalls. Umlauf now drives a 2016 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. “The old guys see the new vehicles like Renegade and are surprised at what they can do,” Umlauf said. “Years ago, we had to have a Wrangler and a daily driver. Now, you can just have the Wrangler or Renegade as everyday drivers.” With a range of vehicles from the Renegade to the Hemi-powered Grand Cherokee SRT, distinctively styled Cherokee, and yardstick Wrangler, how does Jeep remain Jeep? “Wrangler is the halo vehicle,” Caldwell said. “Jeep has to keep some core of the brand in every vehicle, even if 95 percent of owners don’t use SUVs as they are designed.” But, what will the brand look like on its 100th anniversary? “My best guidance is we’ll still be building incredible four-wheel-drive vehicles that deliver good fuel economy at the same time,” Morrison said. College kids, old men, high school girls, CEOs, assembly workers, mountain climbers, Southerners in short shorts and club queens all drive Jeeps. Universal appeal takes decades. “We stayed true to our heritage for 75 years,” Morrison said. “Look at the 75th anniversary badge, with a side profile of a ‘41 Willys. It’s the same profile as today’s Wrangler. To maintain the same thing over that time is very special.” Report by Casey Williams for South Bend Triubune

Summertime is perfect for an afternoon barbecuing with family and friends. Whether you just uncovered your grill for the season or maybe got some new grilling tools for Father’s Day last month, I have some delicious tricks for your summer barbecue. From genius cooking tips to ways to ensure your food will last longer, I have comprised a collection of tips for summer fun in the sun just in time for your 4th of July celebration. Before you grill, you need a clean space. A dirty grill grate is not good for cooking, often causing odd flavors and crusty bits. If you need to clean the grill and are lacking a grill brush, try this nifty grill cleaning trick from Community Table before you toss your favorite foods onto the grill. With the

grates warm, crumple up a sheet of aluminum foil into a ball and use a pair of tongs to give the grill rack a good scrubbing with the foil. The burnt-on food will slide right off. After you clean the grill, spray it with cooking oil to keep everything from sticking. Some websites suggest using a raw potato to clean the grill; that is one life hack that does not work. If you want your meat to get that pretty, picture perfect crisscross, there is a simple formula to achieve that restaurant quality look. Imagine your grill as a clock. Angle the meat so that it is pointing towards 10 o’clock and cook it halfway through. Next turn it so that it is pointing towards 2 o’clock. Then flip it and repeat on the other side. A trick for a tender, juicier burger is to

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

put a dimple or divot in the middle of your burger with your thumb to keep it from rising when it cooks. Then place ice or butter in the center indentation of the burger. If you are more health conscious, add ice chips to the burger. If you prefer flavor to healthiness, try a slice of butter in the center of your burger to keep it from drying out. For a pop of extra flavor, try a flavored butter such as herb butter. Another tip I came across on Buzzfeed is to keep your meat warm using two foil containers. Just tape them together and place the burgers inside so the foil can keep them insulated and warm until you are ready for seconds. When you are making your own burgers, getting freshly ground, highquality beef with at least 20% fat makes the most juicy and flavorful burgers. Look for the 80/20 sticker on ground beef packages at your grocery store. For the ultimate ground beef, grind your own by using a combination of equal parts chuck roast and beef brisket. For each patty, grab 5 to 6 ounces of ground beef. Gently toss the meat back and forth in your hands (about 10 times) to form a ball. Place the ball on a flat surface and pat it into a disk, forming a patty at least as wide as your hamburger buns (about 3/4 to 1 -inch thick). The less you mess with the meat, the better. Overworking ground beef makes it tough and chewy. Only season the patties after they are formed. Salting the ground beef beforehand will break down the meat proteins and give the burger a springy texture. To ensure perfect doneness, test the burgers by inserting a meat thermometer into the center of each p at t y. F o l low th e t em p er at u r e guidelines below for the perfectly cooked burger: 130°F: Medium-Rare 140°F: Medium 150°F: Medium-Well 160°F: Well Done

If you prefer hot dogs to hamburgers, try spiral cutting your wiener. The cuts result in less grease while letting the flavor get into the grooves as it cooks, resulting in a flavor filled dog. Plus there are places for your toppings to fall into so that they do not fall out of the bun as easily with each bite.

To cut the hot dog spirally, push the skewer through the center of the hot dog from one end to another. Once the meat is skewered, place it on the cutting board. Start by cutting the hot dog with the knife resting on the skewer, just above the top of the hotdog and begin making an angled cut all the way through to the skewer. Continue down the length, turning the dog as you go, cutting to the skewer. Remove the skewer and set aside the hotdog. You can use the same skewer to cut all of the dogs or you can simply leave each hot dog on their own skewer for grilling. Cook the hot dogs normally, which will probably take less time.

Anyone who has thrown salmon on the grill knows it can leave half of itself behind when you pull it off. Instead, make a bed of lemons and place the fish on top. Not only will it infuse the fish with citrus flavor, but you can avoid the struggle to get it off of the rack. You can use sliced oranges, lemons and limes cut about 1/4 inch thick spread generously over a hot grill grate. Because some items are smaller or more delicate, cast iron skillets are perfect for cooking items like vegetables and fish. Skillets are also ideal for cooking breakfast over the flames. Sizzle up a skillet of hash and eggs with some sausage patties or skillet cornbread. If you want to make your surf and turf the best yet, try putting bacon and lemons with your shrimp on the Barbie. Lay whole lemon slices and thick

pieces of bacon alongside your shrimp. One of the easiest ways to take your party to the next level is by getting a varied assortment of condiments for your party guests to add to their burgers, hot dogs or other entrees. In addition to your conventional chili, cheese and onions, think of some unusual ingredients to add, such as cilantro, jalapenos, corn, egg, or pineapple and some delicious sauces, like chipotle or siracha. This was a great suggestion from The List TV for National Burger Month in May.

Americans love to grill out. A good bun is more than just an edible meat holder; it can take your burger or dog from ordinary to extraordinary. This trick from Martha Stewart will give you better buns. Simply spread that bread with a generous layer of butter and lay it on the grill to get browned and a little crispy on the edges before piling on the toppings. If you look forward to summertime because you want to spend your spare time camping, there are two gadgets that can give you a day away, but not too far out of touch. The goTenna allows you to always have a signal, making it possible to communicate even without a cell phone connection. By plugging into the USB port on your phone, you can use your phone as a two-way radio. The other useful new tech creation is the Kodiak 6000 USB Power Bank and MixBin Solar Charger which uses solar power to keep your devices charged. Furthermore, this is

a great little tool for those going to a theme park or the beach, where they will not be able to charge their phone for the day. If fruit will be a part of your summer soiree, keeping it fresh in the summer sun can be a challenge. The Lifetricks website suggests keeping bananas fresher by wrapping the stems in plastic wrap. It will stop the bananas from browning too quickly. If you love taking a banana with you as a work snack or on a bike ride and want to keep it from getting bruised and banged around in your bag, try getting a banana container. I got this banana holder on eBay for around $2 and I use it regularly. I have a number of friends that have purchased one of these nifty little storage containers after seeing mine and were quite happy with their purchase. To help mushrooms last longer, store them in a paper bag to keep moisture out. I also use Debbie Meyer Ultra-Lite Green Tupperware to preserve all of my produce and bread. They work wonderfully at keeping items gardenfresh and making them last longer.

Want to have a summer get together without water stains on your table? Then be sure to get my favorite new product, the Coaster Stone. The Coaster Stone offers super absorbent coasters that are made from a unique kind of stone that can absorb the moisture of sweating cups. I have bought an array of different coaster types and brands, and much to my irritation; they all failed to work efficiently. When I would pick up my drink, either the water had ran off of the coaster onto the table or the coaster stuck to the bottom of the cup and then fell off when I picked it up, splattering the water everywhere. I received a set of these Coaster Stone coasters and upon trying them I realized that they do indeed absorb the water that collects around the outside of your cup. The coasters, made of sandstone, work wonderfully and never stick to the bottom of your glass. With over 2000 designs to choose from, including beverage holder size for your car, you can acquire a set at www.coasterstone.com A cocktail goes great with a day of sun, food and fun. A cold beer or a yummy margarita hit the spot. However, with summer heat comes more bugs! You can keep bugs away from your drinks by putting an upside down cupcake paper wrapper on the top of your drink with a straw through the middle to keep it on. This will keep your cocktail pest free. 'Tis the season for seasoning meats, marinating veggies and prepping the grill for a summer of good eats. I hope my list of summer life hacks will make your holiday better than ever. Enjoy America's Independence Day with a cool cookout. Happy 4th of July!

Looking for the perfect gift for your grill master? Try some custom grilling utensils, like a custom grill branding iron for the meat on the grill. You can choose any saying, from initials to ‘Dad’s BBQ.’ If you are looking for some newer grill recipes, Pinterest offers a huge collection of recipes. If you are looking for some flavorful food seasonings minus the calories, try Flavor God seasoning. They are low-cal but full of savory flavors.

You can see more of candy cocktail at www.facebook.com/xoxocandycocktail If a water balloon fight is part of your summer agenda, save gallons of time by purchasing a wonderfully wet new gadget! With Bunch-O-Balloons, you can fill up 100 water balloons in just 1 minute! Simply fill the self-tying balloons using an attachment to your hose. Bunch-O- Balloons is available online and in stores.

Generations: Cracker Barrel’s Larry Singleton, the Emperor of Antiques By Robert K. Elder @robertkelder

In this series, Crain’s looks at a multigenerational business and talks to the proprietors about how they’ve adapted to changes in their industry. Larry Singleton presides over one of the largest collection of antiques and vintage collectibles in the nation, though you’re unlikely to see him on “Antiques Roadshow" or “American Pickers.” Long before those shows became cultural forces, Singleton and his family have been digging through barns and abandoned storefronts. “It’s like treasure hunting,” says Singleton, 58. “That's the part I love, finding it.” The business, Spider Web Antiques, started in 1966 but began growing when Singleton’s parents—Don and Kathleen—started working with Danny Evins, a Shell Oil distributor with a vision. Evins wanted to combine a gas station, restaurant and gift shop under an old country store theme. In 1969, he opened the first Cracker Barrel, decorated with the Singletons’ antiques. Then Evins opened another location. And another. Larry Singleton now serves as décor manager for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Corp., overseeing an empire of 636 stores and a 26,500square-foot warehouse. Singleton couldn’t have predicted that a part-time hobby would turn into multi-generational business. “I went to flea markets when I was just a kid and auctions and helped my parents out,” says Singleton. “My mom worked on getting me to collect stuff when I was young. But it never did cross my mind that this is what I'm going to be doing for the next 30 or 40 years. It did turn out perfect.” Don and Kathleen Singleton owned an antique store when Dan Evins came to them in 1969 to ask if they’d decorate the first Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Singleton started helping out in 1979, eventually leaving his construction job as his parents grew older and Cracker Barrel expanded. In the mid-1990s, the chain started to boom, which forced Singleton to change his tactics. No longer could he personally find the pieces required to outfit 40-50 new Cracker Barrels a year. “I was traveling, going to all these markets all over the country. I couldn't do it all,” says Singleton, who now relies on a network of dealer relationships and the internet to find new pieces. Tracking inventory was another problem, and Singleton had to adapt. “We were just making out these handwritten red tags and fixing them to everything,” Singleton remembers.

That evolved into system of scanning bar codes and computer-assisted inventory control. “We had to work on that technology. And you know, I think we had the oldest scan guns in the country until last year,” Singleton says. As the times have changed, so has the definition of what constitutes an antique. Each store, Singleton says, has to be a reflection of its community—of the surrounding location and culture. But that culture shifts with time. Vintage Coca-Cola advertising and John Deere signs are now joined with metal lunchboxes from the 1970s. It makes Singleton wonder what people will collect in the future. “Products weren't as disposable as they are now,” he says. “What is going to be around in the next 10 or 20 years? What did we have in the ’70s and the ’80s that will be here in the next 20 years? I don't know what's going to be collectable and savable over the next few years.” But there’s hope for the future. Singleton’s 11-year-old grandson Caden is now accompanying him to auctions and flea markets. He asks: “Pa, why is everything you like old?” That makes Singleton laugh. “This is important to share. I am trying to begin to get him to appreciate what ‘old’ means,” Singleton says. “I've got some old motorcycles and cars—and he's starting to say that stuff is cool. I think he is starting to learn and appreciate it, so we will see.” As he nurtures the next generation, Singleton’s enthusiasm for antiquing hasn’t waned. There’s always that next piece, that treasure unseen. “I was in a shop down in Alabama last week and it was just full of country store fixtures,” Singleton says. “And I could just feel the excitement rising up.” This article is from: CRAIN'S NASHVILLE NEWSLETTER Photos courtesy of Cracker Barrel. Stefanie Lea As you pull into the gates of the historic Grand Ol Opry Hotel you can feel the excitement in the air. This being my first Nashville Boogie Weekender, I can't wait to see what the next two days have in store for me. Watching as vintage cars were pulling in and getting lined up into the coliseum. The vendors folding T shirts and displaying all the vintage goodies for sale. Watching the old school barber shop set up, ready to give you a retro hair cut or a clean razor shave. the experience seeing everything coming together and falling into place. As I walked around you could feel the energy building within this classic setting. All the car owners touching up the chrome and glass on the vehicles to be displayed over the days to come. Everything from a beautiful black 55 Belair. An Ivory 55, 5 window Chevy truck. A white 2 door 52 Dodge Wayfair. A custom black 37 Chevy. A sparkling silver 56 Ford F100. Even a slammed 65 Chevy C10. Mixed with a few Rat Rods. Plus what's a vintage car show without a few classic caddies. There was a pin up girl competition. All the ladies dressed to impress the judges. That would of only made Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page proud. With the retro bathing suites being a show stopper. And some of the most unique outfits fitting the classic time period that made them all shine on the stage. As the day turned into night, the stages turned into the centerpiece of the show. People dressed in vintage outfits from all over the world. Everything from cuffed jeans, white t-shirts, and greased hair, to matching cowboy boots and hats with too many rhinestones to count. I was ready to swing dance and twirl the night away with all the Rockabilly bands hitting several different stages. And the sounds of old country and western coming from another stage just down the hall. That only meant one thing, it's show time! I couldn't miss the chance to see the local boys from Hillbilly Casino. A show that will never let you down. Full of energy and the sounds of Rockabilly and good ol Rock and Roll. Up next were the guys from Atlanta Georgia, Psycho Devilles. Stand up bass magic, (Continued on page 23)

drums that just make you want to dance. And the voice of Hot Rod Walt, that takes you back in time. And last but not least, the godfather of Rockabilly himself Jim Heath. Along with the one and only Jimbo Wallace on the stand up bass. And Scott Churilla banging on the drums. Better known as Reverend Horton Heat! A show of legends I'll never forget. And as the night moved on the sounds of Deke Dickerson, Scotty Backer, The Blasters and ending with Chris Isaak only made you feel like you stepped back in time. The chance to experience all that the Nashville Boogie Weekender had to offer was far from disappointing. From the car show, live music and several thousand (Continued on page 24)

I look forward reuniting with them all again next year to enjoy all that Muddy Roots production has to offer. As well as make more memories that everyone should have the opportunity to experience. I look forward to seeing you all next year. Make sure to bring a friend and introduce them to an adventure of the past and present.

Reprint of the June 16 Curbside

By: Tom Vogele tomvogele@verizon.net Since last December the airways have been buzzing surrounding a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposal that would effectively outlaw conversion of street cars into race cars. But even further, the proposal would make modifying your car illegal and to sell parts for that purpose illegal as well. SEMA filed opposition comments in December and then met with agency officials in January asking the EPA to reconsider their position. When that failed, SEMA alerted the public in February. To help navigate the progress of this overreaching proposal we followed SEMA’s President and CEO, Chris Kersting as he discussed the efforts so far. On February 9, SEMA launched a petition to the White House opposing the EPA position. Within 24 hours, more than 100,000 individuals had signed the petition and a total of nearly 170,000 signatures were ultimately gathered prior to the petition deadline. A range of media outlets picked up the call to action and communicated with their readerships. Finally and perhaps most importantly, Congress got involved.

In March, H.R. 4715, the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016 (RPM Act) was introduced to preserve the right to convert street vehicles for competition under the Clean Air Act. Shortly thereafter, a companion bill (S.2659) was introduced in the senate. More than 50 congressional representatives have signed on to co-sponsor the House bill and eight to the Senate bill. The legislation seeks to clarify that Congress never intended for race cars to be covered by Clean Air Act and that it has always been legal to modify a street vehicle for use in competition. In March, Chris had the opportunity to testify before the US House Science Oversight Subcommittee on the issue and thanked our allies in Congress for introducing the RPM Act on behalf of the hundreds of manufacturers that make racing parts and the many thousands of enthusiasts at all levels. Members of Congress also brought pressure on the EPA, culminating in a letter to the EPA from House Energy & Commerce Chairman Fred Upton on April 12.

Take action send a letter to your congressional representatives seeking their support for the RPM Act. Then, on April 15, the EPA announced that it would withdraw its proposed rulemaking pertaining to converted race vehicles. The agency noted that it was responding to the substantial opposition voiced by enthusiasts, industry and Congress. However, the matter is far from resolved. The EPA has not retreated from its position that the Clean Air Act renders illegal the conversion of street cars for use in racing. And that includes banning the marketing and sale of parts and equipment in such conversions. This matter can only be resolved with straightforward legislation—the RPM Act—so that the EPA can no longer call into question the legality of this activity. SEMA is assembling like-minded stakeholders who support the history and tradition of American motorsports—racing organizations, auto makers, trade associations, the media, enthusiast groups and SEMA industry members—to make sure Congress knows that this issue matters and requires the RPM Act to provide certainty in how the Clean Air Act is applied. www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

An easy way for you to take action is to send a letter to your congressional representatives seeking their support for the RPM Act. Then use your socialmedia channels and any available company communication channels to urge others to do the same. SEMA has provided a quick and easy means to dash off your letter. Simply visit www.sema.org/rpm. The future of racing and the industry that supports it depends on each of you helping to make this campaign a success.

The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year. www.streetrod101.com/safetyinspection.html

By: Mike Longo While attending the 75th anniversary of Sturgis Bike Week me and Janie Wallace were having lunch in Keystone in the Black Hills when we and all of the people around us began noticing three professional photographers taking pictures of my yellow Pearl Street Glide. Keep in mind there's probably two thousand other motorcycles on Main Street and for some reason they picked out my yellow Street Glide to take pictures. I laughed and told everyone watch this these guys aren't even from America they flew in on a commercial jet from some other country landed in Rapid City took a cab to within one block of my bike and this happened to be the first yellow Pearl Harley they've ever seen. They all thought I was crazy and watch me as I went down and asked them where they were from. Argentina they said in broken English. When I repeated the scenario to them that I'd previously predicted to everyone up on the balcony they looked at me and said yes how did you know. Some things you just know. We thought it was funny because everybody else thought that I could predict the future. Isn't it strange what a supreme pizza and a couple of beers can do to the human mind.

Bruce and Jenny are only 10 years old, but they just know that they are in love. One day they decide that they want to get married, so Bruce goes to Jenny's father to ask him for her hand. Bruce bravely walks up to him and says "Mr. Smith, me and Jenny are in love and I want to ask you for her hand in marriage." Thinking that this was just the cutest thing, Mr. Smith replies, "Well, Bruce, you are only 10. Where will you two live?" Without even taking a moment to think about it, Bruce replies "In Jenny's room. It's bigger than mine and we can both fit there nicely." Still thinking this is just adorable, Mr. Smith says with a huge grin, "Okay then how will you live? You're not old enough to get a job. You'll need to support Jenny." Again, Bruce instantly replies, "Our allowances, Jenny makes 5 bucks a week and I make 10 bucks a week. That's about 60 bucks a month and that should do us just fine." By this time Mr. Smith is a little shocked that Bruce has put so much thought into this. He thinks for a moment trying to come up with something that Bruce won't have an answer to. After a second, Mr. Smith says, "Well Bruce, it seems like you have got everything all figured out. I just have one more question for you. What will you do if the two of you should have little ones of your own?" Bruce just shrugs his shoulders and says "Well, we've been lucky so far." Mr. Smith no longer thinks the little shit is adorable.
