There are times that we don’t have the faith we need. We try, but we don’t see how it can work out. We want to believe, but we don’t see how we could get well, how we could accomplish a dream. Here’s the key: until your faith grows, just keep being obedient, doing what you know to do, and obeying that still small voice. Your obedience will be more powerful than your lack of faith. …… Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo

Better moods. Is it just me, or is everyone in a better mood now that February has come and gone? The proverb says that “March comes in a like a lion and goes out like a lamb, which means that winter is ending and spring is beginning. Very few things make me smile as much as those March days when the temperature reaches the mid- to high60s and we’re spared the BS of winter clothes. (Long pants, socks & sleeves on my shirt.) So’s here’s to warmer weather and longer daylight hours for all our outside activities. I’m sorry, but 9 hours of daylight is not enough. Period. We were eatin’ on the back porch and I could hear some of the drag-car’s at the starting line off in the distance at Gulfport Dragway. Yep, time for some barbecues, time to throw steaks and ‘dogs on the grill can smell it now. It’s magical. Hopefully it will bring the end of flu season. Maybe we can finally go out in public without looking over our shoulder every 2 seconds to make sure no one sneezes or, worse, coughs on us. With all the Flu & medical stuff going around I thought it would be a good idea to catch up on some of the lesser known medical terms being used today. x Artery – The study of paintings x Bacteria – Back door to cafeteria x Barium – What doctors do when patients die x Benign – What you be, after you be eight x Caesarean Section – Neighborhood in Rome x Cat scan – Searching for Kitty x Cauterize – Made eye contact with her x Colic – A sheep dog x Coma – A punctuation mark x Dilate – To live long x Enema – Not a friend x Fester – Quicker than someone else x Fibula – A small lie x Impotent – Distinguished, well known

Now here are some points to ponder right here!! 1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it. 2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list. 3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong. 5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public. 6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left. 7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. 8. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research. 9. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you. 10. In filling out an application, where it says, 'In case of emergency, Notify:' I put 'DOCTOR'. 11. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. 12. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice. 13. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure. 14. To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target. 15. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. 16. You're never too old to learn something stupid. 17. I’m supposed to respect my elders, but it’s getting harder and harder for me to find one. Till next month Jimbo Here are some of the e-mails that hit home with me…. Jimbo, Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment. The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." The older lady said that she was right -- our generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day. The older lady went on to explain: Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then. We walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day. Back then we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energygobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a r azor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the "green thing" back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24hour taxi service in the family's $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the"green thing." We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then? We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off... Especially from a tattooed, multiple pierced smartass who can't make change without the cash register telling them how much. audra@ Jimbo, We were at the Covington Winter Rod Run a few weekends ago and an ole friend of ours, BW, came up to say "hello". He shuffled up to our T-Shirt table with a cane in one hand and a cold drink in the other. We traded "hellos" and "how ya' doing?" for a few minutes and then BW kinda' straightened up and looked around as if he was looking for somebody. I asked "Who you lookin' for?" He slowly cut his eyes back toward me and with a grin on his face said...."A nice lookin' younger lady between 65 and 70 that's H.I.V. negative and J.O.B. positive!...... True story, T-Tommy Jimbo, A NEW Pastor was attending a men's breakfast in a rural area. He asked one of the impressive older farmers in attendance to say grace that morning. After all were seated, the older farmer began------“Lord, I hate buttermilk." The Pastor opened one eye and wondered to himself where this was going. Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, “Lord, I hate lard.” Now the Pastor was worried. However without missing a beat, the farmer prayed on, “And Lord, you know I don't care much for raw white flour.” Just as the Pastor was ready to stand and stop everything, the farmer continued, “But Lord, when You mix 'em all together and bake 'em up, I do love fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up we don't like, when life gets hard, when we just don't understand what You are sayin' to us, we just need to relax and wait 'till You are done mixin', and probably it will be somethin' even better than biscuits… Amen." ….. giff1500@ Jimbo After 10 years, the wife starts to think their kid looks kinda strange so she decides to do a DNA test. She finds out that the kid is actually from completely different parents. Wife: Honey, I have something very serious to tell you.

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Husband: What's up? Wife: According to DNA test results, this is not our kid... Husband: Well you don't remember, do you??? When we were leaving the hospital, you noticed that our baby had pooped, then you said:"Please go change the baby, I'll wait for you here." So I went inside, got a clean one and left the dirty one there. Moral: Never give a man a job for which he is not qualified. Thomas the Welding Inspector Jimbo, Here is a story about the Good Neighbor! Hi, Fred, this is Alan next door. I have a confession to make. I have been riddled with guilt these past few months and have been trying to get up the courage to tell you face-to-face, but I am at least telling you in text as I cannot live with myself a moment longer without you knowing. The truth is I have been sharing your wife, day and night when you're not around. In fact, probably more than you. I haven't been getting it at home recently, but I know that's no excuse. The temptation was just too great. I can no longer live with the guilt and hope that you will accept my sincerest apologies, and forgive me. It won't happen again. Please suggest a fee for usage, and I'll pay you. Regards, Alan. ---------------------------Fred, feeling so angered and betrayed he grabbed his gun...and shot his neighbor dead. He returned home, poured himself a stiff drink and sat down on the sofa. He took out his phone where he saw a second message from his neighbor, Alan: -------------------------Hi, Fred, this is Alan next door, again. Sorry about the typo on my last text. I expected that you figured it out anyway, and noticed that darned Auto-Correct changed the word "wi-fi" to "wife." That's today's technology for you, hey! Regards, Alan Sent in by Fred Mink fnjminke@ Jimbo, My friend John went to the doctors last week for a check up. The Doctor told him to strip down to his underpants which he did. He gave him a thorough examination and told him to get dressed. The Doctor said, “well John, you are perfectly healthy but tell me how long have you been wearing the skimpy red thong ? John replied “ever since the wife found it in the back of the car.” Phil Jimbo, This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, coolheaded woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. What's the smallest caliber that you would trust to protect yourself? Here's her story in her own words: While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside my house in The Villages with my soon to be ex-husband, discussing property settlement and other divorce issues, we were surprised by a huge 12-ft. alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open. She must have been protecting her nest or her offspring in the area, because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta .25 caliber pistol with me, I would not be here today. Just one shot to my estranged husband's knee cap was all it took. The gator got him easily, and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. The amount I saved in lawyer's fees was really incredible, and his life insurance was a real big bonus! msgater46@

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage March 2018 Hope everyone out there in Hot Rod land is doing well, and I do hope none of you have had to battle the flu bugs going around, as for myself and the Queen we have avoided this so far. If you have had the flu, then my hopes are that you got over it as quickly as possible. On another note; most if not all of us suffer with the Hot Rod bug, one that is almost a life time incurable affliction, I know I still have it. Part of this disease is to go find pieces and parts new or used for current and or future projects. Most recently, and for nearly twenty plus years, a dear friend and a past coworker, Karl Jacobs, aka Karl with a K, continually asked me about attending a rather large swap meet in Moultrie Georgia. This year another friend and I decided we would make the trip. We finally made it to one of the largest swap meets I had ever attended. There were lots of cars for sale in the car coral, and too many new and used parts vendors to possibly see in just a couple days. This was almost a gear head heaven; one could find almost any part imaginable at this event. And did I mention food?, one really did not need to leave the event to get some quality food at reasonable prices as well. I could not believe all of the stuff being bought, sold, and or traded, it was almost an overwhelming sight. Karl with a K has been doing this for a very long time. After my first time there you can be sure I will be back. Now I know why he kept telling us about it, if you have never been you need to go at least once. It has been too cold to do any kind of painting (for me anyway) so I have been doing what I can on the big truck project, progress is slow but at times steady. I am hoping March brings in some weather just a tad warmer so I can continue paint and body stuff. Also looking forward to the Gnat Nationals on March the third this year, good folks great time and some really nice cars and trucks, and again some really good food, I just might have to do a Hot Rod food revue if I keep mentioning food. It sounds like the Queen is ringing the lunch bell time to go, Oh and beware the Ides of March. Later from the carriage house …. Gizmo

THE LAST CRUISE Lord are there any Hot Rods in Heaven that this old hotrodder could use? If so may I jump in for the last cruise, for me to cruise my Hot Rod to Heaven. When my Hot Rod is silent, and my last cruise is done, Lord where will I find that glorious place that old hotrodders meet face to face. Lord only you can say, if I may come to stay For sometimes I am lost, and lose sight of my way. But if I can cruise a true course to Heaven, may I please have a place, to cruise in my Hot Rod in Heaven, with the wind in my face.

A family trip in 1957 does not compare to a trip in 2018. There is little resemblance at all. The superhighway of the day was the turnpike system. Once you got onto the turnpike you were captive until you paid a toll and left the highway. Therefore any gas or food purchases put you at the mercy of the turnpike rest area. Prices had a tendency to be higher than from local stores on regular highways. The advantage was there were fewer obstacles, therefore one could cover more miles in less time. We seldom ever took the turnpike. This story is about a trip my family took from Muncie, Indiana to Cambria County, Pennsylvania to see our relatives. This trip involved my grandmother, my grandfather, my mother, my father and me. My grandparents were raised in this coal mining area, and their relatives still lived there. We took this trip in my grandfather’s new 1957 Chevrolet Nomad Station Wagon. This car was equipped with a 283 V-8 engine with the power pack. The upgrade to that option gave the engine dual Carter four barrel carburetors and a solid lifter camshaft turning out factory numbers of 270 HP. This was just the car to conquer the mountains of Pennsylvania! State and local highways were the proper avenues for this car and this trip. We left Muncie at 4 AM. I don’t know why, but whenever we travelled, we began the trip at four in the morning! A trip was never taken without a thermos of coffee, a steel cooler with bottles of 7Up, that plaid wool blanket in the plastic case, and the picnic basket. My grandparents were in the front seat, my parents in the back seat, and Cubby was in the back of the station wagon with the luggage, cooler, and the rest. My job must have been to watch over the clothes! I would tell you about the highways and trip, but at four in the morning there was nothing for me to look at, so I went to sleep. I have described trips in my youth before, so I will dispense with the travel woes. We spent 10 hours on the road and arrived in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania shortly after 2 PM. Maybe that’s why they left so early, so we could eat for free with my grandmother’s sister! Everyone was happy to see us when we arrived. What a mob of people! There was my Great Uncle Bob and aunt Fern with their 12 kids along with his brother Chuck and his wife Janet. Uncle Bill and Aunt Essie with their kids Billy and Patsy were there. Uncle Gib and Aunt Amber were the hosts on their farm. Then Uncle Ted and Aunt Billy came from Ohio with their son. Quite a crowd of relatives were gathering for a weekend of family fun. There was always an abundance of things to do on the farm. The hay loft beckoned the children and was an outlet for our creative ideas, from building caves to forts. The massive barn was a good location for playing a game of hide and seek or hit your cousin on the head with a dirt clod. The cows were great for blocking one’s hiding area, and there were an abundance of great hiding nooks. There were three ponds for swimming on Uncle Gib’s farm where we could fashion diving boards and aggravate the ducks. The ponds were created for the cattle to drink from. They never shared their entire pond with us, so we

had to either move them to another area or swim where they were not. That was some great swimming. Muddy, but terrific! I remember one time I forgot my bathing suit and had to wear my uncle’s woolen one. Yuck! I hated that. The entire acreage of the farm was at our disposal. There were machinery sheds with tractors and machines to crawl on. There were, goats, and sheep, and dairy cows, and ducks and geese on the farm, along with deer, fox, and bear in the area as well. Berries of all kinds were in abundance to pick too. Lots to keep us busy. The abandoned coal mines were off limits to us and we were forbidden to go near them. I don’t think I want to explain any more to you about the forbidden places! Why get into trouble after all these years? In the evening there was a big campfire and lots and lots and lots of food. There were hamburgers, hot dogs and Kielbasa cooked over a wood fire. The aroma alone made me hungry. The Kielbasa was in huge coils on the grate. The relatives used to tell me that they bought it by the yard and that is why it looked like that. I think they might have been pulling my leg, but I went along with the story. It was just another fun thing that went on. There were vegetables and fresh fruit, but there was always a big kettle of baked beans cooking over the fire. Gee how I loved those baked beans! Let’s not forget the kegs of Schmidt’s Beer that were flowing just about nonstop. As the sun went down, the men would start taking the rear seats out of the automobiles and bringing them into the area so they could be used as beds as the night wore on. My grandfather’s station wagon was brought over because it had a bed made right in it once the rear seat was lowered. My uncle brought down his 1952 Chevy Sedan Delivery that he used for his grocery store. Lots of kids could sleep in there. At the same time Uncle Bob brought out his “Shine”. There was a competition between the brothers concerning their home distilled spirits, so Uncle Bill, Uncle Chuck, and Uncle Ted brought out jugs of their variations as well. It wasn’t long before lots of laughing and fiddle and banjo playing was the highlight of the night, fortified by the alcohol. Once the adults “loosened up” it was easy for the young ones to get a taste of the alcoholic beverages we were forbidden to have. I can remember more than one party over the years where I woke up the next day laying in the grass, not knowing where in the world I was, my mouth tasting like the bottom of a bird cage, and with a gigantic hangover. Whew, that was how I learned that those were named adult beverages for a specific reason! The next day was time to head for home, but we did not leave at 4 A.M.!! We left about 11 A.M. complete with cold sandwiches and leftovers in the cooler, some fresh spring water in a jar, and several jars of homemade canned fruits and jellies. We all hugged and said our goodbyes. It was sad to leave because I knew I would not get to see my relatives and those mountains again for a long, long time. It was late in the evening when we arrived back in Muncie. We were exhausted and yet invigorated after spending time with our family. Uncle Ezra says: Families are like fudge…mostly sweet with a few nuts! I hope this caused you to have fond memories of your family times.

ederal auto safety regulations fill nearly 900 pages with standards that determine everything from rear-view mirror and steering wheel placement to the shape of vehicles and the exact placement of seats. Many of the rules don't make sense in the coming era of self-driving cars. Autonomous vehicles don't need rear-view mirrors, or (eventually) steering wheels. Their ideal physical form is still a work in progress. But an even bigger rethink is in order. As motor vehicles become essentially computers on wheels, software, not hardware, will soon be paramount for safety. This will make most government regulation unnecessary, and, to the extent that it slows innovation, could even cost lives on the highway. "Basically, the entire vehicle code can be boiled down to be safe and don't unfairly get in the way of other people," says Brad Templeton, an entrepreneur and software architect, who has worked as a consultant with Google on its self-driving car project. (He also blogs regularly on the topic.) One difference between self-driving cars and traditional automobiles is that companies will have every incentive to fix safety problems immediately. With today's cars, that hasn't always been the case. Templeton cites General Motors' 2014 recall of 800,000 cars with faulty ignition switches. The company knew about the safety flaw over a decade prior, but didn't act on the information because recalls are so costly. The companies actions had dire consequences: One-hundred-and-twenty-four deaths were linked to the ignition defect. But the safety problems of the future will primarily be bugs in software not hardware, so they'll be fixed by sending ones and zeros over the internet without the need for customers to return hundreds of thousands of vehicles to the manufacturer. "Replacing software is free," Templeton says, "so there's no reason to hold back on fixing something." Another difference is that when hardware was all that mattered for safety, regulators could inspect a car and determine if it met safety standards. With software, scrutiny of this sort may be impossible because the leading self-driving car companies (including Waymo and Tesla) are developing their systems through a process called machine learning that "doesn't mesh in with traditional methods of regulation," Templeton says. Machine learning is developed organically, so humans have limited understanding of how the system actually works. And that makes governments nervous. Regulations passed by the European Union last year ban so-called unknowable artificial intelligence. Templeton fears that our desire to understand and control the underlying system could lead regulators to prohibit the use of machine learning technologies. "If it turns out that [machine learning systems] do a better job [on safety] but we don't know why," says Templeton, "we'll be in a situation of deliberately deploying the thing that's worse because we feel a little more comfortable that we understand it." John Simpson from the California-based nonprofit Consumer Watchdog, who advocates stringent regulation of autonomous vehicles, says extreme caution is warranted because software in cars isn't like software in other contexts. "It's one thing to test Gmail in beta mode," he told Reason, "and software that when it glitches actually might kill you." "That these need to be perfect before we can allow them on the road is a mindset that has affected a lot of urban planners and...the proregulation set," says Marc Scribner, a senior fellow at the free-market think tank the Competitive Enterprise Institute. Since the alternative to allowing imperfect self-driving cars on the highways is the status quo—100 Americans die every day in automobile crashes— perfection shouldn't be the standard.

By: Michael Lachaussee February Lucedale Hardee's breakfast found 28 vehicles attending. It seems everyone is so ready for spring and will take any venue as a chance to "cruise". Once again Wiggins was well represented along with Alabama and locals attending. This group enjoys critiquing all the cars and reminiscing about the one they used to own or one their parents owned. It's a far cry today from where you are able to push a button, turn the heat or AC on and shift into drive versus grinding on the starter and pumping the pedal for more gas, hoping you don't have to push it just to get it started! Air was two windows down at 40 MPH! No one wants to go back to those days but it seems everyone enjoys the memories and the ability to restore or rebuild one. Most street rods can be daily drivers and the hot rods can leave modern cars in the dust. Last months article provided different types of ways to enjoy the "car" sport and as promised this is a more detailed explanation of the terminology of "hot rods". The original hot rods were the T and A Fords. 1927 was the last T Model. 1928-31 was the Model A. Then in '32 the Model B Ford was manufactured with a V8 and it was the birth of the "little deuce coupe". Car buffs began to remove the V8 from the '32 B and install them in the original Model A and T. They "hopped" them up from the original 4 cylinder to the flathead 8 with all of 60 HP. The running boards, splash aprons, hoods and fenders were removed to reduce the weight for greater speeds. This was also the beginning for the idea of car racing as we know it today. It seems that a large amount of moonshine was transported in these "hopped" up versions of the Model A. Some of the moonshiners and their buddies got innovative in ways to increase the speed and thus allow escape from the law. Later other manufacturers such as Chevy, Dodge, etc. began to do the same and the "hot rods" took off. Many of us who grew up in the 50's remember the movies featuring great race scenes with these "hopped" up cars. Lucedale Hardee's Breakfast Gang would like to send a big GET WELL to Coy Turner. Coy is one tough guy to come through the adversity he's had and now he's facing a new challenge but nothing he can't beat. Get better soon as we miss you at the car Breakfast.

Holding onto history. Joe, Sam, and Jack Massey took turns racing the ’34 Ford in the late 1940s and into the 1950s. Sam’s name is visible over passenger side door, Jack’s name over the driver’s door.

I was going to write my own version of this amazing story, as I watched some of it unfold before my own eyes, while at Road Rage Fabrications. After meeting and reading the story through Jody Potters eyes. I couldn't take it away from him or any of the Junkyard Life team. They have done a great job uncovering & documenting this amazing find. Returning this lost heirloom to this local family, is the best part of this story. XoXo Holding onto history. Rebuilding the 1934 Ford race car found in the woods, Part I by Jody Potter Hunting down the owner of a 1934 Ford, found in the woods can be tricky. It took me five years to locate the owner of the property and convince them that I could, and should remove the "junk" car with the name 'MASSEY' painted on the roof. That was just half the battle. After fighting trees, a three-legged dog, and a small mountain, the car was finally mine. A few months later it would be gone, but that's not a bad thing. The battered old Ford is now back in the hands of a man who plans on restoring the car to its round track glory days. Mike Massey, the son of one of the car's trio of former drivers, is well on his way to reviving the '34 Ford found in the woods. Massey Auto Parts After tracking a link to a possible former owner, I decided to contact Massey Auto Parts in Locust Fork, Alabama. The lady on the phone gasped when I told her I had found an old race car with the name Massey on the roof. “Mike you're gonna want to take this call,” she said.

Mike Massey, 68, is the son of Sam Massey, one of the Massey brothers trio who took turns wheeling the 1934 Ford "J-2" race car around dirt bullrings in the Deep South during the 1950s. It wasn't long before the pieces came together. I relayed my story. It was a jawdropper to them, because the family believed all the old Massey race cars were dead and gone. This one had slipped through the cracks or the trees, as it were. Quick trip The three Massey brothers, Jack, Sam, and Joe, are members of the Alabama Auto Racing Pioneers Hall of Fame. The extended Massey family, all aware of the historical significance and sentimental value of the '34, wanted to see Mike get the car back. It didn't take long to decide that I couldn't keep a piece of history from a family who wanted to restore it. I was happy to play a small part, and let it go back to the rightful ownership. Steel body transformation To say the '34 Ford needed help is an understatement. Massey found a $250 replacement frame, courtesy of his friend Bobby Varnon, to start the rebuild of the race car. Major metal work was needed to stabilize and strengthen the rusty shell on top of the new, sturdier frame. Massey contacted Road Rage www.facebook.com/road.rage Hot Rod Restorations, located in Blount County, Alabama, who specialize in rat rods. The owner, Kendall is an expert in crafting something good out of something bad. Kendall reinforced the doors and body shell with electrical conduit. A new firewall, roof skin, and grafting a 1935 Ford center-section to the back panel of the body went along with the tons of patchwork that was needed.

Sam Massey, Mike Massey's dad, holds a victory trophy in 1950s. A new roll bar was also welded in place. Road Rage worked on the car off-and-on over the course of six months as Massey's funds allowed. An acid treatment was applied before the '34 was sent off to the body shop for paint. Paint, future plans Smoothing out the bumps and bruises on the '34's body was not a high priority. Massey wants to maintain the original, rugged looks of the round tracker. He plans to have it painted the same colors it ran in the 1950s. All black paint and lettered with "SAM MASSEY 'THE DUDE' of the SPEEDWAY” across the roof. Period-correct seat, wheels, and powertrain are in the works. I can almost hear the sweet sound of a flathead V8. Never thought this old race car would be gone this fast. I recently made a trip to Hammond La. and visited with Mr. David Ceravola, and Gary Fritz, of Damichi Motors. I first met these two at our shortened version of Cruising the Coast this past October. I stopped by their display inside the Coliseum,to check out a very well done 32 roadster, ( I wish I had taken pictures of that car ) and since I am and always will be a roadster nut, it drew me in like a moth to a flame. I chatted with them a bit and knew I had to see more of what these guys were doing. Like most of us David started at a young age in this gear head, fun with cars adventure. Seems it was most likely due to his Father owning a wrecker business, Buddys Towing, and him living in a close proximity to a wrecking yard (junk yard), parts reclamation facility to us older folks, its where early hot rod pieces were sourced. As he got of age he began wrenching in dealerships, and for a time also did body work at a few as well. He was also working on his own projects as well as friends projects in his own garage whenever possible. He finally realized it was time to make this happen as a business, so he and some of his now 12 employees opened Damichi Motors in 2012 at its present location. David and his crew do some pretty cool work. They do enjoy doing LS swaps in older rides as well as doing new model frame and power train swaps under old bodies. They can also do traditional hot rods as well. They do it all, paint and body, chassis, mechanical and electrical, and can do some upholstery work if needed. If you are up that way give them a call and stop in and check them out, they occupy 3 good sized metal

Fighting the Flu By Candy Cocktail This year, fighting the flu has never been more important. With the highest rates in decades and no sign of stopping soon, being proactive is a priority for many of us. Experts expect this season’s flu epidemic to continue through April. Not only do we want to keep our kids healthy, but many of us simply cannot afford to miss work and we all hate being miserably sick. The flu shot is always a good idea, but for me personally, the flu shot is not an option. I can no longer get vaccines, leading me to find other alternatives in an effort to keep flu free. I have a few of my own home remedies as well as a collection of online research I have done to compile a list of tips and suggested herbs that are ranked as some of the best to help keep the flu away or at least lead to a speedier recovery time. To me, trying to increase my health and boost my immune system is the best way to try to fight the flu. It is common knowledge that taking vitamin C and echinacea and frequent hand washing can help prevent colds and flu, but surely there are other ways to lessen the likelihood of contracting this year’s prominent and deadly flu strains. Wiping down surfaces with disinfecting wipes is helpful, but a recent study on NBC Nightly News tested whether wipes or the aerosol spray were better at preventing the flu. The test found that the wipes were more efficient at killing the flu germs. A common old wives tale that I saw on Dr. Oz and subsequently began using, is to leave part of a raw onion on your kitchen countertop. With its infamous potency, it is said to help kill flu and other viruses that may be in the air of your home. The onion should be peeled and at least one half should be left out. Or if you have a large home, perhaps split the whole onion between two different locations for more effectiveness. Just be sure to keep it away from pets because garlic and onions are highly toxic to our furry friends. The almighty onion is seemingly more powerful than we previously thought. The Internet is full of stories and testimonials from people that say putting an onion in the room of a sick person will absorb the illness and sometimes in just a few hours the person is feeling better. While I find it hard to believe it would work so efficiently so quickly, I do not see any harm in leaving a cut open onion on the counter with the hopes that it will give your home a cleaner air environment. The idea of using onions is not a new one; Europeans in the 1900s helped fight plague by placing onions on the chest or feet of loved ones. During the 16th century it was common practice but it remains a favorite of today’s homeopathic doctors who state that white onions work best. The raw onion should be replaced at least every three months, but onions even absorb bad smells so they can assist in preventing kitchen odors.

I always have liquid hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes in my purse, however if you find yourself without your usual cleansing go-tos, like say we lived in a world like on The Walking Dead, you could pour a splash of vodka on your hands. The high alcohol content of vodka makes it a great disinfectant. Experts suggest drinking at least two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily. Another great way to increase your health and immunity is by drinking green smoothies. There is no shortage of great recipes online for nutritious smoothies.

seven to eight hours of sleep in order to stimulate an immune response from our 'natural killer cells,' which attack viruses. Sleep is my most reliable defense against infection."-David Katz, MD, founder of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and author of Disease-Proof: The Remarkable Truth About What Makes Us Well With flu season not yet dwindling down, being proactive in your fight against the flu is a priority. In the week after testing positive for influenza, a heart attack is six times more likely. Having the flu, which is viral, can additionally make you more vulnerable to secondary infections such as bacterial pneumonia. So let’s try not to give the flu a fighting chance by staying healthy despite this horrific flu season.

As stated by Dr. Axe of draxe.com, avoiding sugar can be helpful as sugars weaken the body’s immune system and help bactria to grow. Indoor environments can be a concentrated hotbed of toxins and germs during the winter so opening your home or work environment up to get fresh air circulating is beneficial. One of the easiest ways to increase health is by simply eating. From activebeat.com’s list of foods that help fight the flu, garlic, either raw or lightly cooked, contains natural antibiotics. One ingredient in particular, allicin, is a natural decongestant and immune strengthener even if you are already sick. If you are feeling nasally, chili peppers may be just what you need. Acting as another natural decongestant, adding a heaping teaspoon of cayenne or red chili peppers to a hot glass of water with lemon allows the capsaicin in chiles to free up the nasal passages. Another delicious way to help ease cough symptoms is by eating dark chocolate. I like this remedy! Chocolate lovers rejoice because the dark cocoa contains an ingredient called theobromine that can suppress a nagging cough by calming down the throat nerves. Studies show that only two ounces of the sweet treat can actually provide the same benefits as a dose of over-the-counter cough medicine.

The top three natural remedies suggested for use this flu season are oregano oil, grape oil and elderberries. Medicinal grade oregano oil has a powerful antiviral effect. Over 800 scientific studies reference the powerful compound of carvacol which is found in oregano. With a long history of use for medicinal benefits in numerous cultures, elderberries, known as one of the top three immunity boosting herbs, are used to fight infections including influenza, herpes, viral infections and bacterial infections. As cited by draxe.com, a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine concluded that elderberry could be used as a safe treatment for influenza A and B because of its efficacy on all strains of influenza virus that were tested, the clinical results and its low cost and absence of side effects. The berries, which are also available as teas and supplements, are high in vitamin C and antioxidants which shorten the life of viral infections and strengthen immunity. There are an array of essential oils that work well for different ailments. There are numerous websites you can use to research which oils to avoid, which ones may be best for you and what is the best way to use them. Below are a few more tips I compiled from amphealth.com that I thought may be particularly helpful. "Research shows that diets that are too low in protein can deplete the immune system. So I make sure to get protein-rich foods throughout the day, especially fish, eggs and yogurt."—Douglas Kalman, PhD, RD, director of nutrition and applied clinical trials at Miami Research Associates When I'm walking past another person and he is sneezing or coughing, I gently and slowly breathe out until I'm beyond the 6- to 10-foot zone around him. "I clean everything that gets touched by lots of people-microwaves, fax-machine keys, doorknobs, elevator buttons, the armrests on my chair-with a good disinfectant at least once a week, even if it looks clean. Rhinoviruses can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours!"-Philip Tierno, PhD, author of The Secret Life of Germs "My strategy is to double down on trying to get enough sleep, even if it's just a power nap on a plane. One of my distant relations was a riding mechanic named Jimmie Dunham. Jimmie was the “rider” with Pete DePalo when they won the Indy 500 in 1935. The job during the race was to keep the driver aware of what was going on behind them. I think it was Tommy Milton who first installed a rear-view mirror which cancelled the riding mechanics job during the race! The big advantage to this was getting rid of 150 or so pounds that the riding mechanic weighed! My favorite driver from the “old days” was Jimmie Murphey, born in San Francisco in, an area that was affectionately called “South of the Slot” by locals, and comprised a sprawling ghetto of Irish immigrants who made local work force. He started out as riding mechanic with some of Americans great drivers, such as Ralph DePalma, Harry Hartz, Pete DePalo, Eddie Rickenhacker, and Tommy Milton. After the war, Murphy’s career as a driver was spotted, but he showed promise to those who knew “the racing game”. Through the influence of Duesenberg’s ’s Number One driver, Tommy Milton, Murphy was given a factory car to drive in the inaugural race a the Beverly Hills Speedway, a superfast, 1.125- mile (1.8 11 km) high banked, wooden speedway. To everyone (except Milton’s) surprise, Murphy won that February 14, 1920 race. He went on, to win regularly, and became a popular champion on the circuit. In 1921, as part of a team of Duesenbergs, sponsored by French immigrant Albert Champion, he became the only American to have ever won a Grand prix race in a truly all-American car, by winning the French Grand Prix at Le Mans. The next time an America driver would win a Grind Prix in a American built car would be 46 years later, when Dan Gurney won the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix. Additionally in 1967 Gurney became the second American driving an American car built to win at La Mans when he won La Mans that year also. So since the 1921 French Grand Prix was raced on the La Mans course, Gurney was the second American driver to win La Mans driving an American built vehicle. The feat of an all-American Grand Prix victory has not been repeated, nor it is likely to be. Murphy’s mechanic in that race was none other than Ernie Olen who also rode with Murphy in 1922 Indianapolis 500. Murphy’s victory was not a hollow one as he was facing the best European teams from England (Sunbeam) with young Henry Se grave driving a 1921 Grand Prix car and France (Ballot) led by the experienced Jean Chssagne. In 1922, Murphy won the Indianapolis 500 in the Le Mans winning car, which had been modified for the Indy race and was powered by a Miller engine. He also became National Champion that year. Murphy won the final Universal Trophy Cup Race, beating Milton, at both Tacoma Speedway and Uniontown Speedway board track in 1922. In 1923, Murphy placed second in the National Championship, even missing several races to go to Europe and race for Loa Angeles race car

builder. Harry Miller. He placed third in the Italian Grand Prixat Monza that year, in a race whose Grand Marshal was Benito Mussolini. Mussolini gave Jimmy two German Shepherd dogs as Jimmy loved dogs. Murphy’s success continued in 1924.. Murphy finished third in the Indy 500, and by the last weeks of the season, he accumulated an unbeatable lead in the points toward the Championship. Although not an accomplished dirt racer, he agreed to appear at a race promoted by a friend, at the Syracuse, New York fairgrounds dirt track on September 15, 1924. As he charged for the lead late in the race, his car slid sideways and crashed through the inside wooden rail. A large piece of the rail was pushed through Jimmy’s chest, and he died before he could be taken to hospital. As I have mentioned many times, pavement, (asphalt) drivers like Jimmy don’t have their great talent on dirt, as they do on asphalt or pavement. As previously written, he was doing a favor for a friend, and “lost it” in a turn. As I have stated before, fairground tracks are horse tracks, and don’t have crash walls, only 1x4 fence railing painted white to keep the horses in!

Speaking of Cedar Rapids, brings back some great memories. I pulled up to the entrance (it was a fairgrounds race track) and had the race car and trailer on the back. It was 11 a.m. on Sunday, and we were to run 2 p.m. that afternoon. There was this “little darlin” standing there to open the pit gate, to let me in to the pits. She stood about 5’4” and was 35-2235 with a white sweater top, and levis that were painted on! She probably tipped the scales a 105 and looked to be 19-20 old. I looked at her and said, “what are the rest of the goddesses doing up on Mt Olympus since you left? She smiled at that, and said “why don’t you see me after the races and we can talk it? I smiled and asked “what do they call you when they need to know your name?” “Lonita is my name, but I go by Lonnie”, “what's yours?” They call me Larry when I finish in the 1st 5 after it’s hey you! So, I go in and start unloading, and as I face the 1st turn I see new lumber unpainted on the horse fence. Horse tracks are usually a mile, sometimes shorter but always with 1x4x8 lumber that only guides the horses when they run. (painted white) The new lumber means somebody didn't make the 1st turn Saturday. (I’m there on Sunday) As I’m unloading the race car, I feel a tap on my back shoulder. I let go of the car and turn around and, there stands Lonnie! “Hi she says”, I’m being relieved for lunch, care to join me? “Ok” say I, my car or yours? (I hoped it was hers, cause I still had lots to unload) She gave me that great smile and said mine but don’t get used to it. To lunch we went, and gave the eatery a few dollars. The restaurant was about 3 blocks down outside the main gate, and I was getting very interested (and not in the food). Lonnie was sitting across from me in the booth, but all of a sudden I feel a leg pressing against mine under the table. She gives me that smile again, and say “you have a place to stay tonite? “ Nope” I said “but I’m in your hands after the man event”. February 10, 2018 By: ChandaElaine February’s Texoma Cars & Coffee was another banner event where people came to together to show off their cars and have some nice, hot coffee at Main Street Motors. Guest speakers included Keith Gumaer of Gumaer & Sons Hot Rods, and Michael Nelson, restorer of the featured 1970 Charger RT Sunroof. Also in attendance were Aimee Freise of the Fort Worth Air Coolers VW Gang, and Daniel Smith who brought his Rumble Bee RT 4x4 from Houston. Featured Car and guest speaker Mike Nelson: 1970 Charger RT Sunroof The car originally came from Tennessee, and one of the previous owners of was Ted Stevens of Ted Stevens Mopar Performance. Mike found the car in a barn in Grand Celine and purchased it from a man who bought it as a project he never got around to doing. “When I bought it, it literally looked like a Joe Dirt car,” said Mike. When Mike acquired the Charger, it had all of its original sheet metal, orange and rusty; however, the previous owner had been collecting parts and had spare fenders for the Charger. While there have been very few modifications made to the car, Mike said, “This is not the original motor, but it is a factory 440 RT car, so this is a 1970 Block RT HP Block. Came originally with a 4-barrel. I put a 6pack Mopar on it.” Also, “The car originally came with an air conditioner. I wanted it drivable, so instead of putting Chrysler air on it, we went back with Vintage Air. It’s an easy swap. I didn’t modify the firewall, I just put a block-off plate on it and it kind of cleaned up the engine bay a little bit.” However, this Charger is unique. “According to the Charger Registry, they know the VIN and claim it is a one-of-one. So, in 1970 they made 112 Hemi cars, but they also made 112 RT Sunroof cars, but this is the only one that was pained EB2, which his High-Impact Go Mango Orange. So, it’s a one-of-one because of the color and the sunroof. There’s other options on it that makes it a little more rare, but not necessarily more collectible though. The collectible feature in this car would have been a 4speed on the floor. This is a column shift automatic, but the other rare options are the rear go-wing, which were pretty popular on the ‘cudda’s,

not necessarily on the Chargers, and power windows and cruise control. And another, I’m not going to say rare option, but somewhat is it’s got a burnt orange interior. I tried to keep as original as possible.” The car was painted by Bob Romey of Schnitker Body Repair in Sherman, Texas. Featured Guest Speaker: Keith Gumaer of Gumaer & Sons Hot Rods Keith has been working on cars, including classics, for 45-years. His first major car was a 1968 Charger RT and as Keith tells it: “I just have a love for the old cars, a passion, you might say and always had the passion for it. But I can remember working in the day when these were just the cars we used to drive and as these cars were fading away and we were getting into the later model cars, it was kind of sad to see them go. Yet, I still wanted to work on them and still offered that service to a lot of customers and still work on modern cars also.” “I mean the wonderful thing about having a passion for it is seeing now these cars coming back around where people are getting interested in them and wanting to get them back to where they were. And there’s not too many people that have the knowledge or the experience of getting them there. I’ve just been so blessed that I was able to retain the knowledge and still have the opportunity to offer that service for everybody. You bought the car to enjoy. We want you to be able to really be able to enjoy it any day of the week, just be able to get out there and start it and go and just really enjoy it. That’s what our desire is for our customers.”

“We also do a lot of new performance stuff. We have a couple of vehicles down there now that are making over a thousand horsepower at the tires and are drivable on the street. That’s one of the advantages we have with technology now our days is also being able to take high-horsepower cars and making them drivable. The advantage of having my two sons there is they have a fresh look at things through their eyes and they like the modern stuff. Where me, I’m more into the older stuff because that’s what I lived. They’re living the new stuff and that’s their passion, especially my younger son, he likes the imports. My older son, he likes to build the horsepower, so basically that’s how we cover the whole field of automotive.” If you want to see Keith and his sons in action, Keith says, “Stop by my place anytime. People come by. It’s like coming in here (Main Street Motors) and seeing the car show. Look and see, we’ve done everything from the older cars to the modern stuff. Just come by and take a look.”

Special Mention: Daniel Smith and his Rumble Bee RT 4x4 From Houston, Texas, Mr. Smith stopped by to show off his Rumble Bee RT 4x4, one of only two produced, and the only Rumble Bee RT 4x4 in painted High Impact Blue with an air-cooled injection.

Some information in regards to Mitch's Mud Ride. Mitch Barton is a dear friend. He is the kind of friend that is always the first to jump up and offer help in a time of need. As fellow hot rodders, Mitch and his family were dedicated sponsors and volunteers at our Toys for Tots Christmas Car Show year after year. That is only one example of his selfless giving spirit. Mitch and his family were still rebuilding their lives after Hurricane Harvey. They had suffered a total loss from the storm. They were not even able to get back to their home to asses the damage for nearly a week. The months had passed and much progress was made in the clean up effort yet their lives were no where near back to normal. Even through all of this Mitch was still helping friends in neighbors with their own losses. That's just the type of guy he is. As giving as he may be he is still stubborn. So when he started having pains in his neck and back he didn't think much of it and fought off the pain. It wasn't until he started experiencing sever pain in his left arm that his wife insisted he go to the hospital. He did. No blood work was done, only at bone scan of his neck that showed some degeneration. He was sent home with pain medication. Within the next 24 hours Mitch's condition rapidly deteriorated. He could no longer stand up on his on. Once again his wife insisted he go back to a different hospital. He did, and was immediately transferred downtown to Memorial Herman. There he received emergency life saving surgery. His back had to be cut open from his neck down to his lower back. He has a severe infection that had already attacked the muscles surrounding his spine, therefore those muscles had to be removed. His back has been left open so they can continue to go in and clean and asses the damage. On Monday he had a cleaning operation and he is scheduled to have another today. These are only a few of the many upcoming surgeries he will need as he continues to heal. As of right now we only know that the infection is Staph they are awaiting cultures to determine the strain. Mitch is looking at a very long recovery. He does have medical

insurance so that has been a blessing. However Mitch is a business owner and has been for many years. His wife works full time as well. Right now they are both experiencing a major loss of income. They are having to make tough decisions in regards to the future of the business that they never expected to make. So this is where our Mud Ride comes in! We want to give back to our friend, no one is more deserving. He and his wife had both lost their hot rods in a flood (prior to Harvey). So since then they had started hitting the trails on their atvs with us. We took family trips to all the big mud parks around here, and I just got to thinking thats it! We are doing a Mud Ride for Mitch. Unfortunately he will no longer be able to ride anymore and is facing having to sell his atvs. So I want everyone to get together and ride for him. This is still the very early stages of planning but it seems everything is falling into place. We know we want to draw a big crowd and we wanted to be unlike anything else going on around here! We already know anytime you have live mud races the people are going to come. Could you imagine the crowd that would come to see this rusty rat rod dirt drag an old Ford on mud grips!! We also are pretty familiar with hosting your typical car shows, so I thought why not a 4x4 off-road car show open to jeeps, trucks, atvs and other off-road vehicles! We are going to have a Poker Run going on in the trails, live music, live auction and BBQ! I really don't want this event to be limited to only folks who ride off-road. I don't want some one to not attend because they don't have an off-road vehicle. There will be just as much fun going on up front as there will be in the back on the trails! Just having my buddy Dennis Hom up front will provide plenty of entertainment for all! We do have an event page up on Facebook now MItch's Mud Ride. We will continue to update that as new things come up! Ashley Hammett ashleyhammett@yahoo.com

2018 Bryceville Sports Association Car Show Feb 3, 2018 by Brian Barsema Welcome to far North East Florida for this year’s car show starter. Small country area meets hot rods coming to help the community. This yearly show raises money to support the boys and girls of Bryceville, FL. This year the park has had hard times and was in danger of closing. The Callahan Cruisers of North Florida, were putting the community first, and were able to raise 3,200 dollars to help support efforts to keep this community park operating. Everything from Mustangs, Hot-Rods, and Ratrods come out to support this yearly event. This show is family through and through drawing the small local townsfolk out to see the local Rods. Kids playing at the park, adults sitting in lawn chairs chillin’ out, this event is purely about family. This show has a little something nice that others around do not, this show usually has a couple well-built drag racecars come to support the event. This is rare now with the lack of drag tracks in Northern Florida. The Callahan ladies and guys always do a good job sponsoring this show. The parking lot was full of rods, and their table was full of hand -built trophies, and the Hot Rodders were looking forward to the awards. At the end the day the drivers light them tires up leaving for the kids. Leaving plums of smoke. This show is worth making a local childs year better. Supporting the community and community support goes hand in hand allowing us never to forget our roots. And having a ball field to play at is one place a small town community gathers at...

Mason Barfield

Well no new job, no new 34 Ford, yet; but one of the greatest adventures of my life this month…and you get to come along for the ride. In my December 2017 column you got to meet my friend of over thirty years, Dave Mader lll. So, I won’t rehash his career, I’ll just say 346 wins in his racing career. Dave decided he wanted to race at Daytona, a lifelong dream, a bucket list item if you will. Dave had tried to run the ARCA 200 at Daytona early in his career and his race car was so bad he didn’t even make the field. Later while in NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series he was involved in crashes in the Twin 125’s qualifying races both times (now called the Duels at Daytona) and did not make the Daytona 500 field either time. Dave told me they were planning to run the Xfinity Series (Busch Series to us old guys) at Daytona, but he had to be approved by former NASCAR driver Brett Bodine. So Dave applied and Brett said no, been too long since you’ve been on a Super Speedway. You need to run a mile, mile and a half and maybe ARCA 200 at Daytona. Dave just wanted to race Daytona, so he went through the extensive paperwork, health tests and was approved to run the ARCA 200 at Daytona (officially Lucas Oil 200 driven by General Tire) on February 10. Dave told me I want you to be there as my friend in the pits, also handle my public relations. I announced stock cars for 30 years including two seasons at Talladega. I retired in 2005, but it took Dave Mader lll to get me to attend another stock car race. Thursday night January 11 Dave texts me a picture of his girlfriend/car owner Paris Wixon, with her feet in the water at the beach, so I text him back saying “why are you sending me a picture of your beautiful girlfriend at the beach?” So he texted me back “OK” and includes a photo of just the beach. I texted him back…“Where are you?” thinking they were in the Bahamas or something. Dave said in Daytona for ARCA testing tomorrow and Saturday. I said call me and let me know how you do Friday night, he promised to. So Friday night we talk and he said 13th fastest out of 62 drivers and 52 cars, but instead of seven hours of testing, we only got four and an electrical issue shortened the four hours toward the end, but we fixed it and we’ve made

30

MARCH 2018

adjustments from the data, we’ll pick up some 1/10ths tomorrow. I said call me. So about lunch time Saturday I am wondering how he did, when I get a text from Dave, it was a story from ARCA and their website arca.com entitled…”Veteran Dave Mader lll Fastest In Morning Testing at Daytona.” (arcaracing.com/articles/2008922-veteran-dave-mader-fastestin-morning-testing-at-daytona) Dave posted the fastest speed of the entire two day test session Saturday morning in the Jeff Spraker’s Racing owned car. I was like wow! The car owner said they had all the data they needed, no use to risk damage to the car in Saturday afternoon testing. So after afternoon testing was complete Dave was 5th fastest overall in the entire test. We were all pretty pumped. Dave called me a few weeks later and asked if I was coming for sure to Daytona? I told him I wanted to but money was kinda tight, so he told me he had my hotel room, I would bunk with his mechanic Mike Williamson, a Vietnam Veteran that is cool and real nice. Hotel rooms at Daytona are outrageous during Speed Weeks, so that was a relief. So I told him I would and that I need all his previous race info sheets to create an up to date “Quick Fact Sheet” for the TV broadcast team and journalist covering the race. I know how broadcasters want their data laid out for quick blurbs of info, so Dave got me all that. After about 4 revisions we had it ready and I made about 20 copies for the track. So about two weeks out Dave starts sending me more photos of the car as they are getting the appearance part of the race car ready and adding the sponsor logos to the car. Then he sends me a photo of the rear deck lid with The University of Alabama Crimson Tide logo on it. Now I’m wondering if that was approved by the university. About that time Dave calls me and says Paris thinks we should have the Crimson Tide logo approved, should we? I said yeaha…we need to at least run it by them so they are not blindsided by it. So Dave said can you handle it? I said yes. I won’t get into all the phone calls, emails and info I had to send Alabama The ARCA 200 was Saturday February 10, Qualifying was Friday February 9 at 3:30 pm EST, so my plan is to have everything packed and ready to go, go to bed about 6 pm Thursday night February 8. Thursday afternoon I received an email from the University of Alabama approving the running of the Crimson Tide logo on the rear deck lid. The only thing I’m waiting for then…is the call that Dave made it through ARCA

practice Thursday afternoon without getting crashed by someone. Super Speedway’s are dangerous to car and driver every time you go out. So about the time I was tired and winding down to go to sleep Paris texted me we are number 1 in practice with 180.781 mph average speed. Keep in mind that is average speed, the cars are hitting around 195 at the end of the straight away. I go to arca.com and see the story…”Ole Man Mader fastest at Daytona.” (arcaracing.com 2/8/18) Now I’m pumped up to the max, I start making and answering phone calls, sending texts, posting Facebook and sending out emails. I print more “Quick Fact Sheets” at midnight and crawl in bed at 1 am, to get up at 2 am. Then I decide I can sleep to 2:30. (also check out this feature story ARCA did on arcaracing.com on Dave…”Daytona “bucket list” Dream Decades in the Making for Veteran Dave Mader lll”, January 16, 2018) Dave really turned some heads at Daytona! Alarm goes off and I head off to Daytona. It’s about 580 miles, after about 150 miles I’m sleepy so I pull in a rest area and get a 20 minute power nap and back on the road refreshed. Dave calls me and asks where I was and when would I get there, I told him I was on schedule to be there a couple hours before qualifying, he said his old friend Phil Parsons (Benny Parson’s little brother) had stopped by the hauler and he would be part of the broadcast. Dave said I told him you had the driver info, I told Dave no problem, that I knew Phil, he was the color analyst for the ARCA broadcast. An hour later Mike (Dave’s mechanic) texts me and said Phil has been by twice to see if I had made it yet. So I said no problem I’m on schedule. I arrive in Daytona and go straight to the ARCA Credential Office to get my paperwork done, pick up my team pit pass, parking pass and head over to the track. I arrive at the team hauler right across from our 63 car garage stall about 2:30 hours before qualifying. I met Phil Parsons and get him the info, I also take copies of the “Quick Fact Sheet” to the media center for the many journalists covering the event. Dave had learned from the ARCA test the best speed could be generated from drifting back 40 yards or so from the pack and letting the pack suck you up to them. ARCA does the pack qualifying, which I do not like! 6 cars in each pack, 4 minutes for each group, the highest speed you can post… is your qualifying time/ speed. You draw for your group number and you draw your position number in the group as lined up on pit road. Dave drew group 3 and position 6, end of the pack and based on what Dave learned from the test and practice… perfect spot. Dave got too far behind leaving pit road and never caught the group. So Dave essentially qualified as a single car instead of part of a pack which was devastating for his qualifying time. He qualified 28th out of the 39 car field. We knew the car was freaky fast, but the problem was being so deep in the field getting caught up in one of the big crashes and not being around at the end. So the decision was made to keep Dave and the 63 car in the back of the pack, try to stay out of trouble and make a late charge to the front. The plan was turn Dave loose with 20 laps to go in the 80 lap, 200 mile event. I walked with the crew as we pushed the 63 car to the front straightaway for the opening ceremonies, all very exciting. I had on a team radio in the pits to hear all the action, I positioned myself to the back right corner of the pit box. (that’s the big tool box the car owner/crew chief sits on to watch the race and make the calls.) The green flag drops and we’re racing. I saw a few minor crashes and Dave was clear of them. (We watched the Jumbotron right behind us until the cars got to the front straightaway each lap.) About mid race I hear Dave say on the radio “Man, I didn’t mean to kill him,” caution flag was out. Dave had gotten into the 33 car driven by Daniel Sasnett (who appeared to have checked up a bit in front of him) and sent him into the wall, the driver was OK. Dave started reporting an overheating problem with the engine and a vibration while riding around under caution. So Jeff, the car owner made the call to bring Dave in for 4 tires and get those air ducts back open, (closed shut when he made contact with the 33 car) as soon as pit road was open, otherwise Dave’s car was OK. The pit stop was exciting, about 15 seconds and he’s gone, back on the track.

Dave was running some of the fastest times in the field in the back of the pack during the race. He was raring to go, but had to be patient! The car was really fast! Dave had a great spotter, Mark Gregory, spots for NASCAR, IndyCar and ARCA drivers, he was really good at coaching Dave in traffic, when cars were beside him, inside or out, when it was clear to change lanes, help navigating pit road, and racing lines that were moving faster, etc a real pro. At the 60 lap mark Dave was turned loose to make his run to the front, but got hung up, (passing is difficult when they are lined up two by two by two), so with about 10 to go Dave was starting to make progress… but running out of time fast. He was in 15th at the white flag… really coming hard through the pack, I thought at the time, no problem getting a Top 10… when on the Jumbotron… I see four cars involved in a fiery crash. Car 23 driven by Bret Holmes was on its side with fire and sparks flying. 66 Mark Thompson and 32 Gus Dean were also involved. So I’m thinking where is Dave in relation to this wreck, I hear the spotter shouting “go low…go low” and about that time I see Dave come into the frame on the Jumbotron… as the 41 car driven by Zane Smith also caught up in the fray… backed down out of the smoke into

Dave’s path! Dave t-bones the 41 car at about 185 MPH on the passenger side of the car. Dave had gone to the bottom of the track so there was nowhere to go!

As soon as the accident was over and the cars all stop, the spotter asked Dave if he’s OK? Dave says I don’t know yet. Dave said later “I then got out of the car as the safety workers arrived on scene.” It took another five minutes of me watching the Jumbotron to finally see a shot of Dave’s car coming to a rest, short of the inside wall. I knew he was OK then, not hitting that inside retaining wall. When Dave was released from the infield care center and made it back to the hauler… he was fine, just a little sore from the seat belts and the HANS device stopping his head inside his helmet. The Infield Care Center personnel told Paris to keep him awake for the next five hours to make sure he didn’t have a concussion. (check out the crash that took Dave out…“Bret Holmes Crash Daytona Lucas Oil 200” on youtube.com) The way it worked out, the 3 car, driven by Willie Mullins was running behind Dave and saw the wrecks and was able to avoid the crashes by going between Dave’s crash on the bottom and the 23 crash up high, he finished 2nd with all the restarts there at the end. That could have easily been Dave’s story. That’s why they call it “racing” and not “winning” I guess. All in all it was an incredible weekend, I wish I could have shared every detail, there were so many but I can get only so many words in the column and I tried to bring you the best of them. I somehow… don’t think

Dave is finished with the Super Speedways. Had Dave won this race…he would have set the record for the oldest driver to ever win on a Super Speedway in ARCA or even NASCAR. Dave still drives like he is 18 years old! I left Daytona Beach early Sunday morning and while driving the eight hours back home, I ran though my mind all that had transpired over the whirlwind weekend. When I arrived back home in Gulfport I was tired, I can unload the truck on Monday I thought, I went in the house and sat down on the sofa and was immediately asleep while still sitting up. Yeah Monday was my last thought as I dreamed about a new job and a 34 Ford. The first classic car show of the year is coming up Saturday March 17 in New Roads, LA and it’s a good one. The 9th Annual Spring Street Festival Car Show powered by Auto Zone. Over 300 classic cars, a downtown festival with vendors… on the banks of the beautiful False River, Mega 50/50, tons of door prizes, thousands of spectators and of course Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show. It is a great car show with hundreds of great people, one of my favorites. New Roads, LA is about 38 miles northwest of Baton Rouge. Hope you have that Hot Rod ready to go, it’s the beginning of the car show season and go time! Enjoy the ARCA 200 photos I took, the sharp on track photos… that credit goes to ARCAracing.com til next month…

US90 Dragway

The Lyons Family and Lyons Motorsports would like to thank you for the privilege you have given us to write to your fan base, here at Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine. We are very much excited about this upcoming season both at Mobile International Speedway and US 90 Dragway here in Irvington Alabama, just south of Mobile. Let me start out by saying that our family own and operate Charlie’s Classic Cars here in Irvington, not 1 mile from both tracks, where we buy and restore Classic Cars. Over the years we have had several different drag cars and our family is very passionate about drag racing and every aspect of it, and we are excited about our new interest, circle track racing. We went into this deal of purchasing, with the intent of just buying the drag strip and operating it. That being said if you have ever been to either track, you know that the round tracks entrance is right behind the burn out box. And our hopes of owning and operating a drag strip fell short, when the owner said she couldn’t brake it up due to not having a way of getting to the entrance of the round track. So we let that pass and didn’t think anything about it anymore, and a year passed and the owner found her way into our office needing some help with some classic cars that belonged to her late husband. Needless to say we helped her out with those cars, and in the process asked her about the track and if she had any offers. She told us she had interest and every time when going to closing the deal would always fall through for some reason or another, and we told her we were still interested if she wanted to work out a deal. Well the deal was made and we now have both tracks to operate this year and we are going to be giving it our best. There is no need having a ½ mile paved oval circle track if you are not going to try and make it work, so here we are. Currently we have the Bandit Big Rig Series coming March 10, full fledge 18-wheelers going upwards of 100 mph on this little track. We have a full 13 race regular race season and we are bringing back the Mobile 300 in October. We are also in the talks to hosting regular drifting events and motorcycle racing at the track. Like we are telling everyone, there is no sense in having a perfectly good round track go to waste.

Here are some pictures of some of the upgrades and maintenance we are doing to US 90 Dragway to get it ready for this year of running. From the 50 acres we got at the end of the drag strip so that it can be extended, (Pictures show the trees that had to be cut down, so that the track can be lengthened to a full 1/8 mile track with 1500 feet of shut down and a sand trap.) to bleacher boards replacing. The last picture is of a special area we just finished up right at the starting line, this area is for the people who want to be in the action but it keeps them off the starting line and out of harms way. …. Kody Besides that we have the NEW US 90 Dragway, formally known as Mobile Dragway, that we will be promoting and hosting racing. Plans are running Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the track, every weekend, and have such events as the Dirty South NO-Prep Series and the Velocity Channel is coming to film the Menard’s Chevy Show planned already. So we have a Ton of events planned for this year and a load of work needing to be done, such as making the drag strip safe for the faster cars. For that we have actually acquired the 50 acres at the end of the track so that we can actually make this a 1/8-mile track with over 1500 feet of stopping distance and a sand trap. We are planning events at both tracks that will be a fun and safe family race environment. It is our hope that this first year will lay down good footer to start new growth in our racing community for both tracks. If you use Facebook, keep up with updates at both tracks and by following. and we hope to see everyone at the races this year.

Thanks Very Much, The Lyons Family

Tommy Boileau was a veteran sports-car racer who never pictured himself driving a big rig around Southern short tracks. But the former Richard Petty Driving Experience manager and current driving instructor has proven to be a quick learner on ovals and one of the discipline’s first stars. “I drove for a car owner out of Hungary,” Boileau said. “He had one of these trucks on display at the Performance Industry (PRI) trade show in Indianapolis. They hired me to race the truck on road courses, and now we’ve somehow ended up here on short tracks.” The series’ quick success can best be traced to commercial truck drivers and their families. Morgan says a large percentage of Bandit Series fans have some connection to the trucking industry. The Bandit Big Rig Series features 13,000-pound trucks racing at 80 mph. When was the last time that happened with any regularity at short tracks not named Bowman Gray Stadium (N.C.)? Montgomery Motor Speedway race director Nicholas Rogers said its date on the Bandit schedule was the best-attended event he’s ever seen at the Alabama venue. In fact, Bandit Series director of operations Brian Madsen says all but four races were complete sellouts this season. “I don’t really know what to say except that we’ve been totally surprised by the growth of the Bandits,” Madsen said. “If you would have asked me two years ago, I would never have predicted this kind of success.” After all, the tour was born from the failure of the short-lived and now-defunct ChampTruck World Series that took the same stock semis and raced them on road courses. It was a cool concept but didn’t quite register with the blue-collar, truck-driving target audience. The series folded in 2016. Madsen spearheaded the transition to ovals last year, and most of his drivers followed suit to the newly christened Bandit Big Rig Series. A six-race soft launch emerged immediately after ChampTruck closed. It expanded to 13 races across the Southeast and Midwest this year, and a West Coast tour was recently announced for 2019. The rapid growth is due in part to the affordability of the Bandit Big Rig rules package. Each race offers a $50,000 purse and $10,000 to the winner. The championship points fund is set to pay $20,000 to the eventual series victor. Meanwhile, the trucks are less than $25,000 to build, providing a return on investment few other disciplines currently can offer. Driver Mike Morgan, nicknamed “88 Mike” by his fan base, made the jump to the Bandit Series after winning the 2015 ChampTruck championship. When not turning laps, he works as a master technician at a Mack dealership in Tennessee. With his Southern drawl and everyman charm, Morgan embodies the spirit of the Bandit Series. “I’ve raced everything from SCCA to drag racing, but I knew I needed to be a part of this when they brought big-rig racing back to the United States,” Morgan said. “This is who I am and what I do. The competition is

Getting up close and personal with the trucks is part of the attraction to the Bandit Big Rig Series. Photo by Stephen Arce He just might save short-track racing in the process. Not even 20 years ago, Hickory was home to the NASCAR Xfinity Series; now it’s largely an afterthought in its own community. But the Bandits put tracks like this back on the map this year. “Well, first of all, I hope that we’re not just a novelty,” Boileau said. “We think this can continue to grow. But we take a lot of pride in how many fans show up to watch us race. Every track needs some kind of big event to just get people talking. So we just want to put on a good show, and hopefully, we leave these tracks in a better place than we found them.” Matt Weaver - Matt Weaver is an associate motorsports editor at Autoweek. Before becoming a journalist, he was a dirt track racer and short track cheeseburger connoisseur.

Road Trip Planned for April, 28th Story by MCC Member: Mike Martin Each year in the Spring o f t h e y ea r , t he Missi ssippi Cla ssic Cruisers club takes a “road trip”. This year we are making a return visit to the Cotesworth Plantation in historic North Carrollton, Mississippi. The date for the trip is Saturday, April 28th. The Cotesworth Plantation House was built in 1848 by US Senator J.Z. George. Senator George was a planter and lawyer in Leflore and Carroll Counties, MS. Elected to the US Senate in 1881, he served until his death in 1897. While in the Senate, he was instrumental in establishing the US Department of Agriculture and the US Land Grant College System. He wrote the Mississippi Constitution in the 1890s. Senator George is one of only two Mississippians honored with a stature in the Hall of Statues in the US Capital Building. George County, Mississippi is named for him. Cotesworth was actually a roadside inn which Senator George bought and transformed into a fine dwelling in 1848. He built a unique octagon shaped library structure on the grounds, which still houses his extensive law book collection. Cotesworth was owned by successive generations of Senator George’s descendants. His great granddaughter is Mrs. Katherine Williams. Mrs. Williams sold the house, library and 5 acres to a non-profit who now operate the structure under the Cotesworth Culture and Heritage Center. Mrs. Williams owns all the land surrounding Cotesworth and operates a big cattle operation on that property. The plantation house was used in the filming of the movie “The Help” and also “The Sound And The Fury”. The town of North Carrollton was used in the filming of “The Reivers” with Steve McQueen back in the late 1960s. Katherine Williams’ son is Jay Williams. Jay is a car guy to the max and owns over 100 cars. His property is down the road just a bit and we will be able to look over his collection. Jay specializes in big old Imperial automobiles. He also owns a 1911 Detroit electric car that is not to be missed. Our visit will coincide with a special “Cotesworth Day” held by the Cotesworth Culture and Heritage Center. The trip will start in the Madison Walmart parking lot located on Grandview Blvd., Madison, MS at Exit 108 off of I-55, Madison. We will leave promptly at 8:00am April 28, 2018. We will travel on I-55 to the Pickens Exit and then take the highway to Lexington, MS. We will then get on Highway 17 and go north into Carrollton and then North Carrollton, MS. We then will go on the highway about 1 mile north to the entrance to Cotesworth which will be well marked. The trip to Cotesworth is about 80 miles over really good roads. The 2 lane roads let the group get more of a view of the countryside. Food trucks will be on the premises. This is a special trip that all will not want to miss. Please call Mike Martin 601-906-1196 or email Mike at mikeamartin02349@gmail.com so that we can a head count on the folks that can go. Members of the Mississippi Corvette Club and the Antique Vehicle Club of Mississippi will also be going.

This event is open to all our MotorSports readers too. Give Mike a call for more info. 42
