“It’s good to carry ourselves with confidence, but sometimes we have such a need to keep up our image, rather than being real, that we put on a mask and start pretending. We’re people of faith, and we think that means we’re supposed to be superhuman, we’re supposed to have all the answers. But, the scripture says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “God’s power shows up greatest in our weaknesses.” If we go around pretending, acting like we don’t have weaknesses, then God’s power is not going to show up. God won’t bless who you pretend to be. He looks beyond the mask, beyond the superficial. Being vulnerable is not a weakness; it’s a strength. When you live with expectancy, you don't go through the day complaining about your problems. You're not discouraged by the negative report, thinking your dreams are too big. You’re looking for God’s goodness. You know the answer is on the way. “Lord, thank You that You’re making a way. Thank You that things are turning in my favor. Thank You that You hold victory in store for the upright.” Your faith can initiate the healing. Your faith can be the catalyst for God to do amazing things”. … Joel Osteen
Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Just a few short weeks ago we were enjoying Cruisin’ the Coast. Thousands of cars & trucks (8,444 registered) converged on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a great week of cruising activities. Some of us had our eye on the weather hoping we wouldn't have rain or a storm roll in to cut our week short, but never did we think that little depression, out in the Gulf, would turn into one of the worst hurricanes to hit Florida and states north. I rode out Katrina here on the Coast and our hearts and prayers go out to all the folks that are being affected by “Hurricane Michael.” Years of rebuilding homes and businesses lay ahead for the ones who are willing to stay. Tourism is the first to go, and the hardest to get back. Our “hot rod” community needs to keep a watchful eye out for any events we could participate in. This is one way to help in the relief efforts. The Emerald Coast Cruizin’ will not go on as planned but you can bet they will be back next year. In the meantime keep up with the efforts “Flip Flop Promotions” are planning to help bring the car community back to Panama City Beach….. Here are some of my emails ….

Congratulations to Jim and Kelly L. of Louisiana, who won the 1968 Chevy Camaro RS 2018 Make A Wish raffle car. Lucky is going to a great couple who couldn't stop smiling and promise to bring it back to CTC. We've enjoyed many hours of seat time in Lucky and we hope you enjoy it for years to come. See you next year, Lucky. Jimbo, Hello Friends, just wanted you all to know that we are working on Cruisin Cajun Country 2019. We are getting allot of feed back and the club has been meeting to see what we can do to exceed your expectations!! There will be a few more choices and allot of the same things that people have grown to love. Soon, you will be able to register online. Our webmaster is working on that as we speak. We have an early registration deadline of May1st. You will still be able to register online after that date but the early bird price will be expired. No worries...you can still print and mail the hard copy if you would like to. (Early Bird prices still apply) We'd like to hear from you! Suggestions, Recommendations, or just to say hello!!! Cruisincajuncountry@gmail.com or Cruisincajuncountry@yahoo.com or Facebook. Jimbo, Years ago my Mother-in-law began reading, “The Exorcist”. She said it was the most evil book she ever read. So evil in fact, she couldn't finish it, took it over to the beach and threw it into the ocean off a fishing pier. I went and bought another copy, ran the faucet over it and left it in the night table drawer by her bed. My Father-in-law said that night was the first time she ever screamed and fainted. I'm going to Hell, but I'll go laughing… meme@ Jimbo, I read this post the other day on Facebook; A guy looked at my Corvette the other day and said, "I wonder how many people could have been fed for the money that sports car cost." I replied I am not sure; it fed a lot of families in Bowling Green, Kentucky who built it, it fed the people who make the tires, it fed the people who made the components that went into it, it fed the people in the copper mine who mined the copper for the wires, it fed people in Decatur IL. at Caterpillar who make the trucks that haul the copper ore. It fed the trucking people who hauled it from the plant to the dealer and fed the people working at the dealership and their families. BUT,... I have to admit, I guess I really don't know how many people it fed. That is the difference between capitalism and welfare mentality. When you buy something, you put money in people's pockets and

give them dignity for their skills. When you give someone something for nothing, you rob them of their dignity and self-worth. Capitalism is freely giving your money in exchange for something of value. Here's one when we were at the ‘75 Street Rod Nationals in Memphis. Just wanted to share this with you all. Some of you will remember and some will not. Back in 75/76 when dad was building his T-bucket, he joined the MSRA & the NSRA. Here's the patch he got from MSRA, I still have it to this day. I'm guessing it is somewhere around 12" wide and 9-10" tall. This one was never sewn onto anything, it's still pristine and I have it in a picture frame. Just thought some of you would enjoy seeing it. BTW..........I am Zack Methvin on FB as well.

By: Joyce Lachaussee Everyone was happy to relax at the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise In after a hard, HOT week of Cruisin the Coast. It was fun and everyone was thankful for a safe week.
Bruce and Linda House were also newcomers to the Cruise In. They brought their 1965 Mustang that they bought in 1971 for (can you believe?) $100!!! This pony is an automatic and had a 289 which he changed to a 302 engine. He wishes he had the 289 back in it. Other than the front bumper and the engine exchange, this car is original. Glad you joined us.
Bill Jordan of Lucedale brought his recently purchased 1972 XKE Jaguar to the Breakfast. This was his first time at the Cruise In and what a hit. He purchased this classic beauty from Washington State 3 months ago. It was a one owner car. He had Tim Colmerauer of DY Performance in Lucedale rebuild the carburetors. Bill said there are a few other small items to fix but the car runs and looks good. A fast, fun car that should give Bill years of driving pleasure.
Don't forget the Swap Meet next month. Hardee's Breakfast begins around 7:30 til so please come join us. SWAP MEET HELD ON THE BACK PARKING LOT OF HARDEE'S IN LUCEDALE. ONLY CAR ITEMS ALLOWED

This '57 Chevy sure looks FAST! With a new 388 HP crate motor you can't help but wonder just how fast it might go. WELLLL the owner, Mickey Smith, can probably tell us what it will do. In fact, I believe he will tell you it will top 100. Seems this '57 with the new motor, 4 wheel disc brakes and a pretty paint job proved it was fast. Mickey and his friend, Robert Dixon, were returning from a 50 year class reunion. Just happens Robert had a Corvette and he pulled up beside Mickey. Somehow Mickey took this as a challenge. Well according to Mickey, he won but the story has a sad ending. Just as Mickey topped a hill doing 100+, a Highway Patrolman was coming from the opposite direction. The rest is history and Mickey is SEVERAL dollars lighter. Mickey you might want to take a little lead out of that foot! In case it doesn't make it as a race car, you can always run it in a demolition derby. Mickey was at a gas station and a young high school girl ran into Mickey. He didn't get upset because she was crying. Hmmmm, I think females do that Mickey.

Mickey's brother, Tony from Conchula, AL, was quick to tell me he hasn't gotten a speeding ticket in this '46 Ford Business Coupe! This '46 has a 302 and a dress up kit under the hood. He has had this Coupe for 2 years and has added cool air and redone the interior. He did mention that the rear fender is 3" wider than stock - that way he can add wider tires. Sure hope that doesn't mean a ticket in your future anytime soon.

The Autumn Classic Showcase The Autumn Classic Showcase was held Oct. 6th as a fundraiser to help build a monument to the “First Responders” of Hendricks County, Indiana. The all vehicle show was a huge success! My thanks to the Town of Plainfield and the Parks Department for opening up an area of the Al and Jan Barker Sports, the facilities were first rate and ideal for this venue. No one promotes a car show without the help of others. I promoted this event, but I cannot accomplish anything without the help of my friends. From all the people who worked directly on the event, to the close knit family of motorsport enthusiasts who help with prizes, to the people who spread the word and get the vehicles to attend the event, to the cars and their owners that attend the event, everyone is equally important. It is difficult for me to write this because I do not adequately know how to thank these unassuming and significant people in my life. You are a true blessing and I hope you know who you are. The weather cooperated and the attendance was great. From the feedback I have received, everyone had an enjoyable time. Allen Shidler created trophies from used auto parts that were a major hit. I feel certain that his wife, Sabrina, played an important role in their design as well. He made the “Best of Show” Trophy, the “Best Motorcycle”, the “Best In Progress”, the “Club Participation Award”, and “Most Unique”. There was at least one part on each trophy that came from the engine of Leah Pritchett, NHRA Top Fuel driver with Don Schumacher Racing. Chris Todd put his talent on display with a hand- made trophy for the “Best Interior”. Quint’s Kustom Kolors created a one of a kind painted mailbox that drew a lot of attention at auction, along with a piece of panel art. The Plainfield Police Department donated two rides in a police car to auction off. (I know what you are thinking, but these rides were in the front seat!) The Plainfield Fire Department donated rides to school in fire trucks for children. Dave Weaver had foursomes for his upcoming golf outing for us to auction. Speedway Motors provided items for auction along with Mothers, and JEGS. Gulf Coast Motorsports Magazine made a generous donation as well as UNIQUE HOT ROD & UPHOLSTERY. Karen Hole donated and served the food for the gathering. I want to extend a special thanks to Dave Bryant for putting together an awesome sound system at the last minute when our original sound system plans failed. You saved the show, Dave. There were other donations from a group of individuals who preferred to remain anonymous and were identified simply as A.G.O.F. (A group of friends.) The top twenty trophies and dash plaques were paid for by two anonymous individuals. This allowed all of the proceeds from the event to go directly to the Town of Plainfield to be used for the “Celebration of Service” monument to honor “First Responders”. I hope you enjoy the photos. There are many things in life that I am thankful for and that bring me joy. My cherished friends top the list. A giant thank you to all of you for all you do. Remember: We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.

The Queen and I took a road trip in early October. Unfortunately it was not in a hotrod or just and old vehicle. We took the Queens chariot. Our plans were to head north to New York to visit some friends, and continue with them to New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine areas and many other States on the way back home. Plans change so. We headed to Niagara Falls, Canada first. If the Niagara Falls is on your bucket list, just go do it. It is truly a remarkable and beautiful destination. It aint Cruisin the Coast, but it is close. One thing to take note of though, as you roam around up there, lots of foreigners and lots of different languages, none of which we foreign Americans could understand. Our next stop was to visit an old coworker and dear friend in Ithaca, New York. This was an interesting town with lots of history and many more waterfalls, since it is very near the Finger Lakes. It is also a college town with several universities in and near it. We were given a driving tour around Cornell University by our friends' daughter, who happens to be a professor there. There is some very interesting and diverse architecture and many beautiful views on and around that huge campus. Since our plans changed and we were nearing a weekend, I suggested we head south and attempt to find a cruise night. And that we did in South Carolina, near Greenville. Another high school friend of ours found one near their home and I finally got to see a few old cars. Again it wasn't Cruisin the Coast, but it was good fun with cars for me. I chatted with a few of the folks and checked out their rides, it turns out it was really a car show that took place from 4 P.M. until 8 P.M. They were giving out awards and had actual judging going on. There were maybe 30 or so vehicles and one cool rusty work of art in a class of its own. I must say they had a diverse group of cars. The roads going there and heading home were overall in nice shape, there were spots with construction but not real bad, we did stop at a few other spots along the way, it seems the Queen was attempting to plan another trip up that way again to see many things we skipped. I did most all of the driving and the Queen did a good job of taking pictures of the beautiful scenery. The pictures of the areas we traveled through will be forever stored in this grey matter, what little I have left, to be recalled from time to time. There really is a beautiful country out there. We do need to see so much more. However I always remind myself of a famous quote from a movie, “there's no place like home. Until next month the travel weary Gizmos.

BWGuitars By Candy Cocktail
T
o adorn implies an enhancing by something beautiful in itself. A plain guitar may be a thing of beauty, yet the artist behind BWGuitars successfully adorns each guitars' design, embellishing each piece in his own way.
This month I wanted to share some elaborate and unique artwork of a musical type from an artist I came across on Instagram and have enjoyed following ever since. His guitars are cooler than most, featuring decor ranging from classic Hollywood movies to attractive pinups. Bryan Wilmut is the creator of BWGuitars. Currently residing in Plano, Texas with his wife and four children, he not only curates broken guitars, but he adds decorative details to the instruments. Born and raised in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Bryan began playing guitar at 10 years old. Bryan had musical aspirations, but it was not until 1988 that everything changed. When his father took him to see The Rolling Stones in concert, music became a very important part of his life. As he stated, he was lucky to have a father that loved music and was willing to take him to concerts at a young age, seeing classic rock bands like Guns n' Roses and AC/ DC. As a teenager, he wanted to be a rock star, or even just a successful musician. However, during his teen years, his group of friends and band mates began experimenting with drugs and alcohol which eventually evolved into an addiction problem. In his late teen years, the drug use led to an overdose that changed his life. Yet the overdose put him on the path to becoming a substance abuse counselor. Over the years, Bryan abandoned all aspects of a musical pursuit. The substance abuse counseling field and need for stability ended any further pursuit of a music career. Starting as a young intern in 1998 and later managing facilities for felony probationers, he has continued working in the substance abuse and addictions field for 20 years. Turning his setback, into a set up, into a career helping others battle their own addictions. Bryan currently owns his own outpatient substance abuse program for teens in Plano. The program, called Imagine Programs, has been open for eight years now. Bryan was spending less and less time with his beloved family and lacking any balance between his work and home life. The long work hours caused a professional burn out in 2016. His wife Jeanene was experiencing the same kind of burn out
16
NOVEMBER 2018
and she started crafting while also gaining an interest in vintage items and antiques. Jeanene found a great way to bring extra income into the household and she soon turned her hobby into a business. Jeanene encouraged Bryan to explore crafting and hobbies that would bring any kind of balance into their lives. It was not long before Bryan combined his new found hobby with his lifelong passion. Bryan always loved guitars and always wanted to learn how to build them, so he soon began working on guitars. When his wife had one of her girlfriends over for a crafting party a few years ago, they were using a technique called decoupage. Decoupage is an art where you use glue like Mod Podge to paste paper or pictures to things where the paper is sealed into whatever surface you are working with. Upon his wife's suggestion to give it a try, his first thought was, “Why couldn't I do this to a guitar?” Practicing and perfecting his technique over the next two years, there was an abundance of vintage items flowing through his home on a regular basis so he decided to use vintage paper items or themes in his retro guitar designs. Bryan especially liked the pinup theme and found that it was not only a style that he liked, but that others found particularly appealing as well. Another aspect Bryan enjoys is acquiring the broken guitars. In addition, he wanted his guitars to be unique in that they all start as broken guitars because it forces him to learn how to fix them, which was one of his original goals in his new hobby. His first guitar, or practice guitar, is one that he decided not to sell and it remains a special decoration in his home.
“Since then I have learned a lot of lessons in the art of decoupage and have experimented with a variety of mediums. I have done several guitars with themes like vintage Star Wars where I used vintage Topps stickers as the theme. I have done several pinup themed guitars using vintage pinup pictures, as well as a Daft Punk themed guitar for my daughter.” As Bryan was beginning to run out of good reasons to buy any more guitars, this also gave him the opportunity to shop for old beat up guitars on a regular basis. As he says, “Even though my rock star dreams came to an end many years ago, I have always loved playing guitar and collecting guitars.”

Selling his first guitar in March gave him a boost of confidence in his artistic abilities and fueled his interest in pushing the envelope when it comes to what he can do to a guitar as an art medium. His current projects are far more intricate and have pushed him to explore and learn more about artistic technique as well as guitar building. He also creates a variety of other items, such as guitar picks and other instruments, like tambourines. So what is next for the musician and artist? Well he is currently hard at work on a Batman guitar using a first edition copy of The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, in which you will be able to read the graphic novel by reading the guitar. Additionally, he is working on a Pulp Art guitar using vintage Pulp paperback covers as well as another pinup themed electric guitar. All of this had a profound impact on his life and family. Bryan stated that it is nice to have hobbies that you enjoy doing, especially when you find you are good at something you did not know you could do before. Bryan elaborated, describing how he spent many
18
NOVEMBER 2018
years pouring every ounce of his energy into his counseling career, and as fulfilling as that has been, he had failed to take the time to take care of himself. While he still gets a lot out of being a counselor and business owner, however, Bwguitars has special significance in that it revitalized his love for music, art and guitar. Bryan says he is fortunate to have this hobby, yet even more fortunate to have a hobby that is supported by his family and has so many implications for his future. Looking forward, Bryan hopes that his exclusive guitars will bring artistic success in that it would be a hobby and business that can be as successful as his counseling career has been. Always passionate about addictions counseling and helping others, he now hopes that his passion for art and music can be a healthy outlet for artistic expression as well as inspiration for others who have found themselves stuck in a repetitive lifestyle where a job takes away the most important things in life. Each finished guitar has left Bryan asking himself, “What if I could do‌.â€? It seems there are limitless possibilities. Possibilities that will bring us more exceptional and ornate artwork from BWGuitars. To see more of Bryan's work you can follow him on Instagram at www.instagram.com/bwguitars To purchase a guitar, guitar picks, or other art, visit www.etsy.com/shop/BWGuitars

Cruisin The Coast is such an incredible event that has now come and gone for 2018. Wow, so much work put in by so many people, it’s amazing the time and effort put into making this event happen on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The 2018 USA Today Number 1 Car Show in America. It’s our folks that make that happen. Cruisin The Coast staff and volunteers works months… and some of them all year long in making the event happen, down to the cities and their staffs that put it all together. It is our coast treasure, that we must as cruisers promote and protect! What are you doing to help this event? Even your words make a difference, choose them carefully! We can all make a difference! Thanks to all the View The Cruisers sponsors that helped me with the event. Auto Zone, Dad’s Super Pawn, William Smith Paint and Body, Headliner’s Plus, Performance Tire and Wheel, Southern Camper Sales and Bud McQueen’s National Muffler. You guys made it happen, thank you! The day before View The Cruise, (Saturday) I set my clock for 4 am thinking that if I got up early on Saturday, I would be tired Saturday night and go to bed early so I could get up at 3 am Sunday morning. Terry Poore and I met downtown to get the Hot Rod Show trailer in place along with the five scissor lifts. Including the trailer we had six sound systems to get in place, so getting the lifts in place is something we didn’t want to have to do Sunday morning. It took us about two hours to get it all right where we wanted everything. I got to bed by 7:30 pm Saturday night with the alarm set for 3 am. When that alarm went off Sunday morning I sure didn’t want to get up, but the adrenalin was pumping and I jumped in the shower, jumped into my setup cloths and headed to my shop. I had to load three more sound systems. My normal show ritual is to head to McDonald’s for two large black coffees for my ole school Stanley Aladdin Thermos, a biscuit and then stop at the Ice House and pick up a 20 pound bag of ice for the trailer cooler. Got the sound systems loaded, coffee, ice and headed to downtown Gulfport, MS. I got downtown about 4:30 am and starting unloading everything. Terry Poore arrived and started setting up the sound systems. Terry was an extremely valuable asset for this show. We were able to take a deep breath and start cooling down a little anyway about 7:30. The music was slated to begin at 8. Just before 10 am we started calling all the Veterans to the Hot Rod Show trailer for our Veteran’s Tribute. It’s the way I begin every car show I do, of course with each promoter’s blessings. Our Veterans mean so much to our way of life and the very fabric of our country. We can never do enough for these brave men and women! View The Cruise is the largest Kickoff Event for Cruisin The Coast and it was time to get this party started. Speaking a short welcome on behalf of the State of Mississippi was State Senator Phillip Moran. RLee Flowers welcomed cruisers on behalf of the City of Gulfport. Next up was Claire Dobbs minister of First United Methodist Church in downtown Gulfport with the invocation, praying for our cruisers, the CTC week, our country and our Veteran’s for their service to this country. A large group of Veterans were honored and one chosen to hold the American flag as we played the National Anthem. It makes the
20
NOVEMBER 2018
heart happy to see hundreds and hundreds of people pay their respects to our Veterans, our country and our flag. Kevin Riley of Dad’s Super Pawn got to officially “get the party started” and we kicked off Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show. The event was packed and incredible all day long, it’s hard to describe, just like Cruisin The Coast is hard to explain if you’ve never experienced it. Half Shell Oyster House fed the Hot Rod Show trailer and it was good. This year View The Cruise was so large it stretched out a lot further north, east and west. At 4 pm we gave away the Mega 50/50 which the pot was over $2,000. We started the tear down process. I got all the equipment and the Hot Rod Show trailer put away and home about 8:30 pm Sunday night. It took about week to go back through everything and get organized for the next show. View The Cruise is a show I worked on just about all year, really hard the last 3 months. All that work…for an eight hour car show. But all good events have that kind of work and dedication to make them possible. When you think about the volunteers that got up early the morning of the show to make it enjoyable for you to attend, think about the months of work people put in to organizing a good event. Probably over a hundred people did some kind of work on View The Cruise. The City of Gulfport, Main Street Merchants and all the players involved. You did a great job on whatever part you played!
Joe and Amanda Martin Thursday through Saturday the Hot Rod Show played at the Cruisin The Coast Swap Meet at the MS Coast Coliseum. This was our third year to play for the event. The highlight of this event was getting to meet and interview Joe and Amanda Martin from the hit
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
TV Series Iron Resurrection on Velocity. Joe became famous from his bike building days with Martin Bros Customs, who have always done an incredible job with bikes and hot rods. Iron Resurrection finds old rusty classic hot rods and restores them incredibly, the show also stars his wife Mandy. I told Joe I loved his talent and all, but it was Mandy I tuned in for! lol Joe said “you and everyone else!” Both were very approachable and down to earth people. Rod Milligan and ET Motorgear brought the Martins in for two days for meet and greets for four hours each day at the Swap Meet. Their lines never got short. Cristy Lee, Chris Ryan with his Great Eight Lincoln and Courtney Hansen were also brought in by the Cool Cats at ET Motorgear for CTC.
Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show My brother Ken and his wife Linda came in Wednesday and stayed through Sunday. We had a shrimp boil at my house with them, my son’s family came with the grandkids Wednesday night and we had a blast. Cruisin The Coast is a family affair and family makes anything better. Not long after my brother Ken got back home to Dothan, AL he had to batten down the hatches for Hurricane Michael, Dothan is about 88 miles north of Panama City, FL and they ended up without power for seven days. They just got their back power on. They had very little damage, but many of their neighbors had many trees down. The city of Panama City Beach, FL was lucky, looked like a tropical storm came through. The City of Panama City, FL took a direct hit as did everything east of it for many, many miles. You have seen the TV coverage. We pray for all in the storm’s path. Follow Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show on Facebook to stay up to date. Get that hot rod ready for those planned winter modifications and enjoy photos from my friends during Cruisin The Coast! til next month…

I could ramble on and on about this beautiful car for days but luckily I have the owner herself that blessed me with a few words about this dream machine…. ………………………………………………………………………… A LETTER FROM NATALIE…. “I originally purchased my 39 Ford roadster at CTC (Cruisin The Coast) in 2012. I saw it cruising through the Edgewater Mall parking lot and chased it down on foot. Luckily when I got to it I noticed the FOR SALE sign in the window. After running it for a few years and showing it, we decided to take it down and rebuild it. In the fall of 2015 we started the rebuilding process. As things always change in life, we had a new opportunity present its self. My husband Shane landed a role on a popular reality show called STREET OUUTLAWS NEW ORLEANS and at that point race cars became life and my 39 was pushed to the corner. After sitting for 2 years I began my threats (which were just a means for motivation). I told Shane to have my car done by CTC18 or he was going to be sleeping on someone’s couch and it wasn’t going to be mine. I can not tell you how hard my husband worked to get this car back together for CTC18. Shane along with so many other great folks made this car possible!! The car has been rebuilt from top to bottom! I am now back cruising in my beautiful 39 Ford. Special thanks to my loving husband Shane Lester! I appreciate all the blood, sweat, and burns. XOXO; NATALIE LESTER P.S. I would never make Shane sleep on someone else's couch HA HA ………………………………………………………………………… Well there you have it. There were a lot of new upgrades on this machine that a lot of hands helped make it come true. The Lester’s Precision Paint and Body crew were always hands on. Jason Marshall was the brain behind the paint that ended up being 3-stage liquid crystal.

John Varhol Had a piece in everything from mechanical, electrical, and paint and body. Richard Brewer was cut and polish on the 39 end game. Austin Kent and Lashan Ausmer worked a lot on detail with this build. John Lunstrum (yours truly) worked on the graphics for hood mounts and custom lettering on dash. Jim Gardner worked the miles of electrical components through the body. The entire time we all worked on this, Corey Waller kept Precision Paint and Body on the move. Asides from the shop; The custom power lift hood system was designed and installed by Mike and Ben Miller of True Customs. The interior upholstery consisting of tan with ostrich was done by Bryan Hagwood of Headliners Plus. Travis Motorsports also had a piece of this pie. I wish I could tell you
this was an easy project but I personally watched injuries happen with this machine. A few scars and stitches later you end up with a 1939 Ford roadster with a small block Ford, 700r4 tranny, suicide doors, removable hard top, custom sound system, vintage air, and a LED light show that can compete with a night club. I want to give photo creds to STANG RACING PRODUCTIONS for their contribution to this article. Well if you missed out on seeing this machine at MGM Field of Wheels or CTC, swing by Precision Paint and Body and maybe‌. Just maybe‌ she will be there taking her steps to the next level of upgrades. John Lunstrum / mixed media artist/ 251 259-7935

bout 28 miles south of New Orleans, the Town of Jean Lafitte lies on the edge of Bayou Barataria. Across the Bayou, is the Community of Barataria. These are sleepy little fishing villages where everyone knows everyone else and neighbor still helps neighbor. Many folks have grown up here, but there are others who have moved in and made this place their home. One such man is Morris Arcement. Morris and his wife, Tina, are originally from St. Bernard Parish which sits to the east of New Orleans. They moved to Lafitte in 1999 when Morris was offered a job with the Fire Department in Barataria. After 20 years, he will be retiring at the end of this year. So what makes Morris Arcement special? Let me introduce you to him. As soon as Morris turned 18 years of age in February of 1974, while in his Junior year of high school, he decided he was going to enlist in the military. He first went to a Navy recruiter but then he went to a Marine Corps recruiting office where he signed up. He was sent to boot camp straight from the recruiting office. He called his parents from a pay phone to tell them goodbye and he clearly remembers that was the only time he knew his father, a former Marine himself, to cry. Morris was assigned to the USS Juneau, an Austin class amphibious transport dock where he and his shipmates, while positioned in the South China Sea, participated in the evacuation of people from Vietnam. Morris tells stories of the “friendly Vietnamese being boarded upon the Juneau. He said that they seized all currency, guns and other weapons from the locals as they boarded and threw them over the side of the ship into the harbor. He also remembers pushing Huey helicopters over the side to make room for more evacuees. Morris stayed in the Marines for 12 years in the Motor Transport division. After returning home, he took a job doing what he had been trained to do, driving a truck cross country. Then he started driving locally for the Hubig Pie company of New Orleans. During his time as a truck driver, he married Tina and they settled in St. Bernard. During his four years driving for Hubig Pies Morris got to know people along his route which extended all over the west bank of the Mississippi River - an area that included the Town of Lafitte. One of the people he got to know was Fire Chief Duet. When an opening in the Barataria Fire Department came up, Chief Duet called Morris and asked if he wanted the job. He started work the next morning.
Morris says that in the military he was serving his country and as a fireman, he is serving his community. He is very proud of serving them both. Morris comes from a long line of family members who have served in the military and currently has two nephew-in-laws in uniform. He

believes that laying your life on the line for the freedom of others should be recognized. It disappoints him that so many Veterans have been mostly forgotten. He has made it his mission to make sure that will no longer be the case. Morris, as he so eloquently puts it, is honoring Veterans one name at a time.
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
A few years ago, Morris came up with an idea for honoring the more than 700,000 deceased Veterans. He waited until just the right car came along and purchased his 2015 Camaro. That’s when he started his project. Morris began putting their names on the car and displaying it at events around the state. So far, 249 names are in place. He keeps a notebook filled with names of people he wants to add and also a complete list of those who are already there. He knows who each one is and some of their personal history. Many names are of his family members and others from his local area of Louisiana. Some names are known for their exemplary military service and some for being a film, TV or music star. But still others are those of men and women from all around the country. Once his retirement takes effect on January 1st, Morris intends to visit as many Louisiana cemeteries as he can, notebook in hand, recording the names and service information from the graves and headstones. Once verified, those names will be added to his project, too. His goal is to have 100,000 Veterans recognized. Knowing full well all of those names won’t fit on his Camaro, Morris is now working on a pickup truck that will be outfitted to tow the Camaro and its large display tent. The truck and the tent will also be covered in names before he is through. At this time, the names are added to the Camaro with adhesive lettering. Morris does all of this from his own pocket, and it can get expensive. The tent was donated to him, but it needs some work, so he has a new canvas and three side panels also being donated. His plan is to get the names on the Camaro finished, then have it photographed and “wrapped” to preserve it. The truck will also be wrapped once it, too is covered in names. At that point, he’ll start adding names to that big tent.
Some of those noted on his Camaro include my father, Charles Vincent, WWII Merchant Marine and his brother, Gerald Vincent, WWII Navy. It touched me very deeply that Morris chose to recognize my dad, especially, because Merchant Marines are usually overlooked as Veterans. They were not recognized by the United States as Veterans until 53 years after the war had ended, on November 11, 1998. This is just this type of acknowledgement that makes his project so special. Others recognized include Douglas A. Murro, the only Coast Guard Veteran to be awarded the Medal of Honor; William Harvey Carney, Army, the first African-American to be awarded the Medal of Honor; Glenn D. Frazier, Army, who survived the Bataan death march and 3

years as a POW in Japan; Wilson Robertson, Army, who was the oldest Louisiana WWII Veteran who died recently at the age of 102; Sado Munemori, the only Japanese-American to be awarded the Medal of Honor during WWII (22 others were awarded after the war); Raymond Flynn, Army, the first man from Louisiana killed in Vietnam; Carl M. Brasher, Navy, the first African-American to become a Navy Master Diver despite having an amputated leg; Robert Augustus Sweeney, Army, one of only 19 to be awarded the Medal of Honor twice; and Frank E. Peterson, Jr., Marine, the first African-American Marine Aviator and the first African-American Marine General. Morris raises money for Veterans whenever he can having sold barbeque dinners at Lafitte Town Hall and holding car shows. He and other Veterans spoke at Fisher High School last year when they were invited to come speak to art students about their experiences in the military while the students sketched them. Some of that art now hangs in the World War II Museum.
Morris is personally sponsoring a contest this year for Fisher art students where the entrants must submit written essays on “The Price of Freedom.” He will read each one and decide the winner who will be awarded a $100 gift certificate from Morris. He believes that our children and young people today need to know about the cost of freedom in order to respect it and prize it as he and so many of our forefathers did. Morris doesn't ask for donations, but any offers of help are very much appreciated and put to good use. He is in talks now with a local company that is considering becoming a sponsor of his project, and he is actively looking for more sponsors help offset the costs involved. At this time, he plans to have the car on display from Mobile, Alabama to Lake Charles, Louisiana in at least 22 car shows next year.
If you want Morris and his car to make an appearance at your function, just contact him. He'll do his best to be there for the price of a donation, the amount of which is up to you. You can contact Morris at ………. 28

There might have been rain outside, but inside it was Oldsmobile 88 Saturday at Main Street Motors for this month’s Texoma Cars & Coffee! Two fully restored 88’s were on display - - and there were plenty of people there who wanted to get a look at these beauties. Both of these 88’s are from Buick’s third generation of 88 production, and both are “Golden Rocket 88’s” produced in 1957. While not Super 88’s, the maroon and silver sports a 324 Rocket V8 engine. These Rocket V8’s typically produced 277 horsepower. (That would bring some excitement to the Homecoming parade!) They were also the first models to have the safety recessed steering wheel. Personally, I love the fronts of these cars: the chrome, round headlights, wraparound bumper, and the gunsight hood ornament. Whenever I think of classic cars, these are the iconic elements which make up the ‘56, ‘57, ‘58 which rolls around in my head. While getting my fill of this bright, shiny goodness, and slurping hot coffee, I bumped into one of the local car trivia masters who was packed with fun Buick facts he was dying to share. Well, it was Buick facts or a long, blow-by-blow dissection of the CD of the 1958 World Series he had been listening to on the way over (it was Yankees over Braves for those just dying to know). I said, “Hit me with the Buick facts.” Here are a just a few: The Buick Y-job (Yep, I looked it up. It really was the car’s name), was the first “concept car” and the first to feature the waterfall grill Buick still uses today, as well as the first to have power windows. The model built for Harley Earl even had flush door handles and covered headlights, which could be opened or closed from a dashboard control. The 1962 Buick Special had the first V-6 engine massproduced in the U.S. The 1936 Buick Century got its name by being the first Buick production car capable of travelling over 100 miles per hour. Buick produced the Hellcat M18 tank destroyer, aircraft engines, and ammunition exclusively, starting in 1943 - October, 1944, with vehicles not being produced again until 1945. Curious about this particular bit of trivia, I did a little digging and found out that not only was it true, but the Hellcat was the fastest U.S. tank, as well as the most effective tank used by the U.S. forces during World War II! Of course, there was more to our rainy morning than classic Buick 88s and unwinnable trivia duels, it’s also about finding more area car shows -- including this year’s Dia de Muertos celebration in downtown Denison. Every year this celebration features a low-rider and art car parade through downtown, as well as a low rider show, puppet parade, bounce house for the kids, and gallery walk. The is nothing quite like spending a beautiful Saturday at a car show with something for everyone! Can’t wait to see you there!

Rolling out for the Curtis Burns Memorial!
Dirt Track Revival … Chavus Holland Hello again! When I signed off last month we were gearing up for a big race…and WOW, what a race the Curtis Burns Memorial turned out to be!!! 39 of the meanest modifieds in the South rolled in to Hattiesburg Speedway on September 22, all looking for the win! Chase qualified 16th overall, which was quite impressive considering we didn’t adjust the car to the track conditions during qualifying. The race format was announced to us during the drivers’ meeting as follows: No cars are locked in by qualifying. Qualifying will only determine your starting position for your heat race. There will be 6 heat races with the top 3 from each heat race moving on to the main event. The 6 heat race winners will compete in a dash, and however they finish the dash will determine the top 6 starting spots in the main event. The remaining cars that didn’t make it into the main event will then run a B-Main Feature where the top 4 cars will earn a starting spot in the Main Event. 22 cars will start the Main Event. So, we lined up 3rd in the 4th heat race and as the green flag flew, Chase looked like he wouldn’t have any problem earning one of those top 3 transfer spots. He took over the 2nd position and a caution came out. When they went green again, suddenly he and the leader fell off the pace! As the caution flag waved, we could see a white driveshaft laying on the speedway! Once they both rolled to a stop, of course my heart dropped because all I could think was Chase was injured by the driveshaft! (Against my better judgment, I had let Chase talk me into letting him run his racecar topless in this event for some extra contingency money that was offered to the highest finishing “topless” modified.) Once it was announced that Chase was ok, I made my way over to the track exit where Chase had been pushed off the track by the wrecker.
The broken wire that shut down our heat race! Chase, (looking totally disgusted!) said to me “IT JUST DIED!”. It didn’t have anything to do with the driveshaft that the leader had spit out of his car! We tried to re-fire the car once again, with no luck, before being pushed around to our pit area. I figured it was something simple/ crazy, and after doing a quick look over we found the culprit was a broken hotwire on the coil which caused the engine to lose fire! We
32
NOVEMBER 2018
quickly repaired the wire and made a couple chassis adjustments to get the car ready for our final attempt to make it into the main event! When Chase left our pit area to line up for the B-Main, I reiterated to him again, that he had to be in one of those top 4 finishing positions if he wanted a spot in the Main Event! If not, our night would be over! As the cars began rolling onto the track for the B-Main event, my heart began to pound in excitement, and I started feeling extreme anxiety because Chase had not rolled onto the track yet! WHERE IS HE???!!! Did the car break again??? I’m on the opposite side of the racetrack and beginning to trip out! As the field of cars fumbled around on the track, looking confused about where they were supposed to line up, it was obvious that Chase wasn’t the only car missing from the group! One of our racing friends saw my concern and confusion and he jumped on his side by side and hauled butt around to find out what was going on! Several minutes later, someone came by and told me that the racetrack officials had decided at the last minute to break the 16 car field into 2 groups. I found out now that they would only be taking the top 2 out of each race…This makes total since to me now that I know what’s going on, but at this point I’m just hoping that Chase realizes that he needs to be in the top 2 instead of top 4 to move into the feature! Well the first race only had a hand full of cars starting, and only about 4-5 of those cars finishing the race. So, I was feeling pretty good about our chances! When the 2nd B-Main rolled onto the track, Chase looked like he had his hands full as he was starting 6th out of a big field of solid cars. He did a great job moving through the field and had a great battle, side by side, with fellow racer Bryan Cox for the 2nd spot, which was now the final transfer position! Chase finished 3rd as the checkered fell on our night! I noticed that Chase went to tech after the race…I wondered if he thought he was moving on to the Main Event…As he pulled into our pit I could see the disgust in his eyes once again! “That’s racing buddy! You did great!!!” I said! BUT…I just couldn’t let it go! I felt like the rules were laid out and understood in the pit meeting and then they changed right before the B-Main rolled onto the track with nobody really knowing “for sure” what was going on! I talked to Chase and asked if he knew that only the top 2 were moving on to the Main Event or did he think he was safe in 3rd? (Would he have ran harder for that position if he knew that it was certainly his last shot at the Main Event?) Chase said, “I kind of knew, but wasn’t 100 percent sure.” Well which is it? YES or NO?!!! He said that at least 2 track officials had came to him and told him they were splitting the B-Main into 2 groups and he’d be in the 2nd group but neither mentioned that they were only taking the top 2 out of each race…I know what you’re probably thinking, “common sense” but hey, at this point we’re scratching for any hope to make the big show! Do you blame me? Chase told me that our friend (that had come around on his side by side to find out what was going on) had told him that they were running 2 B-Mains and only taking top 2…but Chase wasn’t sure if it was official or just hearsay since it didn’t come from a racing official! (I later watched Chase’s go pro videos and could hear the officials, Chase was correct, they never mentioned the transfer spots!) So, we went and found a track official and pleaded our
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
case...We anxiously awaited while they talked it out and came back with a verdict! Their decision was to allow us into the Main Event because of the confusion, and to make it fair they also allowed the 3rd place finisher from the first B-Main to advance into the Main Event as well! WOOOHOOO!!!! Now we’ve got to get the car ready...we’re starting dead last (24th) in the 40 lap Main Event!!! When the green flag waived it was quite a rush to see, my 15 year old son, doing his thing amongst this huge group of veteran drivers! Chase had a plan to “just ride” and stay out of trouble until the first few cautions. WELL…As 24 cars stretched out around Hattiesburg Speedway, it didn’t take very long before the hard charging leaders were knocking on his door trying to put him a lap down! I felt helpless watching because I knew he was sandbagging, and I knew he had a car that was capable of charging to the front, but so far, no cautions, and he was still just riding in last place as planned! Thank goodness, right as the leaders closed in on the kill, someone ahead of Chase spun out, bringing out the first caution and saving us from getting lapped! While idling around under caution, I commenced to giving him some very animated hand signals and gestures to let Chase know that it was time to GO!!! He apparently got what I was saying, and he went to work when the green flag flew again! WOW!!! He took to the outside line and began a charge through the field that made this dad very proud!!! We had a rather large cheering section hooting and hollering and cheering my boy on! He worked inside, Chase’s in-car go pro from the Main Event! outside, and through the ruts Working that high side!!! making his charge, wheel to wheel and door to door, lap after lap! He eventually found himself sitting in 8th position on a restart behind his mentor Noah Daspit! He held his own for several laps there before a final caution of the race, where his rear tires decided they had given him all he was going to get for the night! His car lost all forward drive The final points standings for 2018! off the corners and he struggled to hang on for a 12th place finish! That’s right, after a very eventful night, he brought us home 12th with no damage on the car! Just a ...and thru the middle!!! couple blistered tires! Awesome driving!!! Very proud!!! Then, as he pulls into the pits, they announce that he is needed on the front straightaway…This little sucker had done won the 2018 Curtis Burns Memorial Hard Charger Trophy/Award ($100)!!! What a nice finish to a crazy night! I had announced to the family
Receiving the “Hard Charger” in our motorhome, on the way home from Hattiesburg that morning (3:30AM), that this would conclude our 2018 racing season! That was a mistake…did y’all know that women take you very serious when you announce something so foolish knowing you don’t really mean it! I guess I was tired, exhausted, drained, and just flat out pooped, but I never should’ve said that in front of Adrian! It made it so difficult when I announced 2 weeks later that we were going to run ONE more FINAL race this season at Hattiesburg Speedway on October 19!!! HAHAHAHA!!! See y’all there! In all seriousness…I can’t put into words how proud I am of the successful racing season that Chase has had! I know I sound like a broken record, but I’m going to say it again…NONE of this would be possible without all our amazing sponsors!!! THANK YOU ALL!!! Until next time…Chavus

Every person has a gift to give. It could be knowledge, music, public speaking, art, etc. However, if you don’t give it, it only lasts your lifetime. Share it, and you become immortal… Donna “Sugar Bug” White “A KraZy Family” We all know it’s very special to have a drag racing family. After sitting down with the Ziel’s, I recently learned just how special it is to have family members not only support you, but race with you. Bill Ziel was born in Pensacola, FL in 1949, where he grew up. He went to his first drag race in Pensacola in 1964 and watched Mr. Aubrey Padgett in “Big Iron”. His first car was a 1950 Ford two-door sedan, which was both his everyday car and his first race car. Eventually, he put a 352 motor in it out of a 1960 Ford police car that he found in a junkyard. He began racing on the street when Interstate 10 was being built. In the evenings, there was no traffic on it, so they used the highway as a place to race. He and his friends would get together at the local firehouse and place $5 or $10 bets, and then go race it out. His brother was interested in circle track cars, and Bill built and raced those for a while. During this time, he raced many folks, such as Bobby and Donnie Allison. Bill’s first race on the drag strip was at Pensacola in 1967, driving Buddy Scruggs’ 1966 Ford Fairlane, which was a four-speed. Bob “The Colonel” Tensfield would race his Barracuda during this time and Bill would often go watch him (One of Bill’s favorite stories is when in 1966 The Colonel’s car begin going down the track on its own and The Colonel had to go in the window to stop it). However, his favorite race was Mr. Aubrey Padgett at Greer, SC last year for the best two out of three. Mr. Aubrey has always been a favorite of Bill’s, even before he knew him (as a kid “wandering around in the pits”). In Bill’s words, “If I raced John Force it wouldn’t be as big to me as racing Aubrey”. They had raced a few times in eliminations, but never in a match race. That day, Bill was running a 6.18 and Mr. Aubrey was running a 6.21. Bill beat him “by half a fender” in the first round, Mr. Aubrey beat him “by the thickness of the chrome” in the second round, and Mr. Aubrey “turned it loose” and came back and beat Bill in the third round for the win. Being as humble as he is, Bill stated that he was glad Mr. Aubrey beat him because “that’s the way it should have been”. It is no secret that one of Bill’s favorite groups is the Southern Outlaw Gassers, who he says “When you’re racing with people like that, people you care about people you love, it just doesn’t get any better. Once the race is over, it doesn’t matter who won”. To the younger generations, Bill said he would tell them that it’s ok to be competitive, but have fun with it also. Bill’s car, “KraZy” has an all-aluminum Shelby block, FE series, 526 cubic inch with BBM heads that have been worked by Jim Kuntz, Hampton 871 blower and runs on alcohol. The car runs around mid 5’s, but is generally a little slower because Bill likes wheel stands! The car is obviously named after his wife (Kathy Ziel), who Bill says “Thank God she’s crazy, because if not she’d probably be my ex-wife”. When Bill began talking about Kathy, I asked him if he would like to give her a little secret message. He got a very sheepish grin and looked toward the room where Kathy was spending time with their granddaughter, and quietly said, “I am so proud of you.” Kathy was born in 1957 and grew up in Midfield, AL. At 25, she moved to Florida and opened up a dive shop. Kathy met Bill in 1991, and they were married over a year later. About five years ago, in Holt FL at the “Redneck Nationals” she raced a scooter and came in second (and won her favorite trophy). This began her love of racing. She wanted to start racing, so Bill got her an altered and she began bracket racing. She has taken several wins, including first place in super pro. This upcoming year she will be racing both her altered (which runs in the mid-fives) and the “Coon-Tang”. Her motto for racing is “I don’t care who I’m up against….I race my own race”. Maddie, born 2003, is Kathy and Bill’s granddaughter and back-up-girl (BUG). Although it was her grandparent’s idea, she truly fell in love with the sport (even though she has walked out of her shoe on the track). She said her favorite

part of it is being near the cars and with her grandparents, who she is very proud of. She someday wants her own car that will go “as fast as it will take me”. She decides on her outfits depending on which of her grandparents’ car she’s the BUG for that day. She loves being at the track and listening to the stories of the older racers. She wants to be known as the “KraZy, old-soul grandchild”. She works at a local hospital with patients…..whether it’s spending time with them or getting them something they need. She wants to join the military and be a pilot, get a culinary degree, and own an old diner….because “the world needs more old stuff”. She is currently an honor student in the 10th grade.
Big Congratulations to the Cottonwood Nostalgia Night Gasser winner from last night, Johnny "Reb" Armstrong from Pinson, AL and also a big Happy 46th Anniversary to Johnny and Henrietta from your SOG family!
Sugar Scoop: Unbeknownst to either of them, both Kathy and Bill stated they wanted to race each other when I asked them who they wanted to call out. I feel a big match race coming up. And Jerry Lopez Sr., Kathy is coming after you as well! Good luck to you men…..you’re gonna need it.
Great Weekend of Racing, Can't think of a better way to Celebrate our Anniversary.. Thanks to Jessie Holmes & all our Southern Outlaw Gassers family for the Awesome Cake.... "Good People - Good Time"

South Louisiana Dragway Reunion Car Show & Cacklefest November 30 - December 1, 2018 Parking Lots of Hooters, Outback Steakhouse, Chili's, Walmart 1500-1600 Martin Luther King Blvd Houma LA. 70360 9am - 7pm Down in Bayou Country, in the town of Houma LA there once existed one of the earliest state of the art drag strips, known as Southland Dragway. Since closed in the early 70's, one man, Steve Robichaux (also a racer), had a dream of reliving the days of racing and in 2017, started an event called the Southland Dragway Reunion. Taking over Hooters parking lot along with other businesses nearby, locals and visitors experienced a day of racing nostalgia mixed with a huge car show and racing displays of the likes of stock, prostock, gassers, funny car and dragsters as well as hot rods, street rods, muscle and show cars from around the Bayou Country areas. Folks were able check out all of these great sights as well as meet some famous local racers and even experience the “crackle-fest with nitromethane race cars firing up their engines for exited crowds. With last year's event success, it was clear that Steve had to keep this going and after word got out about the 2017 event, he received calls from all over the country from interested racers who themselves were eager to attend the 2nd Annual event. So much so that 2 other race tracks were included in the Reunion event, LaPlace Dragway and Pel State Dragway. In addition, this years event will have a Bayou Country Car Cruise which will be escorted from Mark Oswald's Speed Shop and throughout a chosen route to take in all of the beauty and scenery known as Bayou Country. This ride will end at the Houma/ Terrebonne Civic Center at 346 Civic Center Blvd. on Friday, November 30, 2018, where attendees will participate in the Friday Night Meet and Greet, offering food and drink, show car and race car displays, open mike for story telling with racers along with memorabilia display and vintage dragway photos. on Saturday, December 1st from 9am 7pm. The Reunion will be held, between 1500-1600 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Houma, LA. Parking the Hooters, Outback Steakhouse, Chili's and Walmart Parking lots. For more information about attending these events and displaying you car(s), visit www.southlanddragway.com or call Steve Robichaux at 985-628-2602.

Those of you that own and ride today's high performance motorcycles may have experienced tuning problems when you add performance components to your bike such as exhaust systems and high performance air cleaners. I had an experience on my new Harley Streetglide after installing performance components that the Harley dealers recommend and sell. Everything was fine but less than perfect. A side effect of a better breathing motor with today's computers caused the engine to race to 2200 RPM on a cold engine crank up and another situation where the motorcycle did not want to decelerate in a typical engine braking situation. After taking it to the Harley dealer in Slidell and a couple of other local shops I was told that "nothing could be done" by the dealership and "that's over our head" at the independent shops. Then a friend of mine mentioned Chad Mckey and the guys down at Cycle Lab on Pass Road Gulfport. After paying them a visit they diagnose my problem and ordered me a Thunder Max computerized engine control module for my Milwaukee 8 Streetglide Harley. I can't say enough about the results, the service and the attitude of this shop. If you need anything high Tech done to your late model motorcycle or want the latest in high quality digital stereo equipment added to your bike these are the people to see. They are way ahead of the game. Mike Longo

Why we shoot deer in the wild: I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home. I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up-- 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope, and then received an education. The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope. That deer EXPLODED. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer-- no Chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined. The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals. A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for cornfed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope. I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual. Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it

dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand...kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back. Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when ..... I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and slide off to then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head--almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts. The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective. It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose. That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day. Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp... I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -like a horse --strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape. This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down. Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head. I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away. So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope......to sort of even the odds!! All these events are true so help me God‌ An Educated Farmer

A 1957 Chevy Belair two door hardtop. This is a beautiful example of the quintessential 1950s classic! This is the car that most people associate with the 1950s, and this one is an excellent example of that American classic. The Matador red paint is in excellent condition, with nary a chip or scratch. The chrome appears to have been redone, and the Bright work is nearly flawless. Inside, the seats are hounds-tooth deluxe with inlay and are in great shape there are no signs of wear or sagging, the carpet and headliner look new. It is powered by a 283 power PAC engine, larger valve springs, a four barrel carburetor from the factory, and a 3speed column mounted standard transmission. This car is as good mechanically as it is goodlooking. It runs and drives as it did back in 1957. It is equipped with dual rear antennas, dual mirrors, and fender skirts with rockguards!
