Starting with Cruisin’ the Coast here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Christmas not that far behind. (only a dozen Sundays away) I know the local car clubs and volunteers who help with the massive undertaking of putting together Crusin’ the Coast spend all year making plans on how to make things run as smoothly as possible. When you stop to think about the thousands of Cruisers and tens of thousands of spectators that look forward to spend the week here, driving back and forth on Hwy 90 & I-10, you can imagine what a job it is. Coordinating plans with the city leaders, police, emergency teams all in a effort to make sure our guest have the best the Coast has to offer. Not everyone is a patient driver so if you're looking for a shortcut ask one of the CTC volunteers, they are the ones wearing the bright yellow shirts, most of them live here and will be glad to help point you in the right direction. This months magazine is jammed packed with events that will take place during CTC and well after. Each event listed has a group of people who are making plans to entertain the people who take the time to attend. Almost all of them are taking the proceeds to help someone or a charity. We can’t go to every event but it is important to try and support your local car or civic club wherever you live. On a personal note I’d like to thank a couple of people who helped me get Gulf Coast MotorSports started twenty-one years ago. What started out as a newsletter for the MS Coast Harley-Davidson shop, has turned into the magazine you have in your hands today. With the help of Giff Orms and Chuck Herring (MS Muscle Car & Street Machine club) all those years ago MotorSports now has a readership that is mailed to scribers in twenty states, car clubs are sent boxes of magazines to hand out and many are distributed along the Gulf Coast. I especially want to thank the writers who contribute their columns each month. You make the magazine a so much more than just an event and classified newsletter. You make it personal and I know our readers look forward to reading what you send in. To our readers, I Thank You for all your support, input and complements. Jimbo, After going to see several car shows just before Katrina. We decided it was time to get our own car. We started our search, found a 1929 Roadster. We drove it for several years. But as the old saying goes "You're never finished building on one" but that isn't always true. There was really nothing else he could do to it. So it was time to find another project car. So the search began. I really wanted something with a top on it so we could take it out more with

out worrying about getting caught in the rain. Two years ago during Cruisin The Coast he found a 1936 Plymouth that was just the thing he needed. The owner was willing to just swap cars. The car was drivable but needed a total restoration. Just what he needed to keep him busy. We got began by removing what was left of the interior and started from scratch. New carpet, door panels, we also built a new dash and instrument cluster. We added a lower piece to the dash for the radio and the most important thing needed a new AC system. Changed the brake system to four wheel disc brakes. Narvin Seymour and Don changed the 8" rearend to a 9" then they built a new grill, and installed a new Mustang II front end. We decided it was time to redo her to a different color theme. The inside went from black to gray. Next was to change the paint color. The only place to take her was to our friends at JT Auto Paint and Repair in Vancleave. Toni Bowers did all the body work and mixed up just the right shade of silver gray and blue. Toni Bowers and Don designed the side graphic and layed out the paint scheme. The final touch was the new rims that matched the silver gray paint. After two years of work there is still more to do. I guess it really is true "You're never really DONE". So be looking for us driving down the beach during Cruising the Coast. Don & Carolyn Charles - Vancleave, MS Jimbo, One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.. The Grandfather replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before: television, shots, foods, contact lenses and the pill. There were no: credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented: pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air. And space travel was only in Flash Gordon books. Your Grandmother and I got married first,... and then lived together.. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every woman older than me, "mam". And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir." We were before gay-rights, computerdating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Bible, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege... We thought fast food was eating half a biscuit while running to catch the school bus. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your

cousins. Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk the term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.... Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, ... but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day: "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, "chip" meant a piece of wood, "hardware" was found in a hardware store and "software" wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap. Jimbo, The September 2016 Hardee's Breakfast in Lucedale: The monthly "old" car breakfast at Hardee's was a washout in August, however it didn't keep everyone from showing up minus their cars. September proved to be a better climate and there was a really good group who came to enjoy the cars. The breakfast is held every second Friday of

each month at Hardee's in Lucedale starting around 7:30. All are welcome with or without a car. All that is necessary is an enjoyment of looking at cars you don't normally see on the highway, conversation with fellow car enthusiast and an appetite for breakfast! As you can see from the photos, car enthusiast start at all ages with a variety of interest. Don't you wonder if all the people shown in this photo of the Volkswagen rode together in this car to the breakfast?? Breakfast customers who are unaware of the monthly breakfast are thrilled to see the old cars. Many have tales of their grandparents, parents and even some themselves who had a car just like that one. Old cars aren't for everyone. There is a lot of maintenance necessary on a stock old car with parts sometimes next to impossible to find. Street rods take special expertise as well. But all can enjoy the beauty of the cars and reminisce. Come join us at Hardee's in Lucedale, bring a friend, child or grandchild and enjoy the cars. ……… Mike
Jimbo, It has often been said that “If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger”. Assuming this adage is correct, I have the privilege of working with 15 of the strongest committee chairmen that ever put together a car show. I’m certain that the management staff of Cruising the Coast can make a similar claim. I’m often asked why I put in so much time and effort into a car show? Simply, it’s a labor of love. It’s also an endless devotion that drives all of us car guys to continue a hobby we all cherish. Without question, it’s a boundless commitment to leave the car collector hobby in bigger and better shape than we found it. Besides, we love to share the endless stories our cars provide time after time, show after show. The Scarecrow Cruise & Car Show began as a gathering 65 cars that assembled at the end of a mile long parade that celebrated the annual kick off of Madison the City’s Scarecrow Festival. And now, we’re hosting a car show event featuring 600+ show cars that attracts more than 25,000 spectators. I could ramble on about how awesome The Scarecrow Cruise & Car Show has become, but instead, I am going to give you a lineup of the events scheduled over the two day run October 21 and 22. It all taking place on the Madison Campus of Tulane University.

ABSOLUTELY FREE By: the Orange Grove Rebel Writer To borrow a phrase from Forrest Gump, “I’m not a smart man.....but I know what love is”. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer myself but I know what a Hot Rod event is and Souped Up Saturday is one of the best around. Pastor Rick Carter and his pit crew at Bible Baptist Church, Gulfport Ms. doesn’t boast this but I will. Souped Up Saturday is an event that many local Cruisers refer to as their “must attend event of the year”. The good people of Bible Baptist Church and Souped Up Saturday have been sharing God’s power through horsepower since 2006. Their very first hot rod event rendered a very small participation of only 22 entries but through the years their highest number of entries to date is 376 1980 and earlier Rods, Customs, Classic Cars and Trucks. A hard count at the gate reflected an attendance of over 3700 Cruisers and spectators combined in 2015. Souped Up Saturday is very unique in the fact that it is ABSOLUTELY FREE to all Cruisers and spectators alike. There is no entry fee, no car registration fee, no fee of any type. The only cost involved is the very modestly priced concession stand prices or if you purchase one of their very affordable Tee Shirts. This is an extremely well organized event with tons of major door prizes. All prizes are given away thru a series of free drawings throughout the event. The Grand Prize is a 330 horsepower GM Crate Engine and yes it is done thru a free drawing as well. They actually give away free bottled water and will even bring it to you by one of their Souped Up Saturday Car Hop Girls. One look at the Campus of Bible Baptist and you can tell this is a special place. Pastor Carter and the congregation are eager to share their blessings from God and enjoy giving back to the Community thru this wonderful event. Due to limited parking it is for 1980 and earlier entries in the display area regardless of modifications. No trailers allowed and no motorcycles in the display area. Save the date, October 1st, 2016 and make plans to bring the family to Souped Up Saturday hosted by Bible Baptist Church 12200 Dedeaux Rd. Gulfport Ms. 39503. Show time is 4pm until 8pm with the gate opening at 3pm.
It's alive once again! Now named Dreamer's Lounge, 1036 E. Railroad Street, Long Beach. New owner's, Missi Decell, a long time resident and graduate of Long Beach High, and her husband, Mike Decell, a New Orleans native and 25+ year resident of Long Beach, have given new life to what once was "The Alibi". From what the "old timer's" in Long Beach say, dating back to the 70's it was once "Can Do Lounge", "Whistle Stop", "Patenotte's", and has been "The Alibi" since 1988 when Missi's mom, Roxanne, worked there for many years. Roxanne passed away in 2013. Seabees helped in some construction of the building in their off time. It's been a local hang out for retired and new military members for years. The building served as a meeting place after Hurricane Katrina and was one of the only local places in Long Beach with electricity. It has a history of great stories from bands, dancing, shuffle board, horseshoes, and cookouts. When the Seabee Base gate closed on Broad Avenue, it seemed like east Long Beach was starting to die out. February of this year, Missi & Mike just couldn't bare to see a Long Beach icon close for good. They purchased the property and started the renovation. They have made upgrades to most of the property including new big screen tvs, updated jukebox with internet and surround sound, renovated restrooms, etc. Stop into Dreamer's and help the new owner's get it going and don't forget to visit their facebook page at Dreamer's Lounge. Dear Jimbo, Today I received my September issue of the magazine. I am sorry to see that the flooding has been so bad for so many in the Gulf Coast MotorSports area. When we had flooding in WV earlier this year our state Deputy in the Knights of Columbus requested and received contributions from other states K of C's for flood relief in WV. I will check to see if I can make a flood relief contribution to La's K of C or to Catholic Charities. Since Red Cross held back on distributing donations for 9/11/2001, I have been looking for other ways to make specific incident relief donations. Thank you. - Mendal Yoho

Back in the 1980's I got a kit car from a guy who had built it 20 years earlier. The man was a great mechanical engineer, and a car guy. I was a mechanical engineer. I knew enough to pass the licensing exams. That guy was so far ahead that he was almost out of sight. We worked together. He told me about the car he had built. He said he was getting tired of tearing down the engine just to look at it, and needed garage space. I wanted it, so he sold it to me. It was a La Dawri Conquest fiberglass roadster body on a Kaiser Henry J frame. It had an 1949 Olds Rocket V8 engine with Jahns pistons, a ¾ race cam, Fenton cast iron headers, dual exhausts, etc. It had no fancy fuel/air equipment-just the stock Olds 2 barrel carburetor that looked like an upside down turtle. The transmission was a standard Cadillac LaSalle 3 speed with one of those pop up straight line 3 speed shifter kits. The driveshaft was connected to a 1949 Ford differential axle assembly with leaf springs. It was unpainted black fiberglass. I put upholstery on the seats and door panels and eventually Bob's Auto Body in south Pittsburgh gave it a nice metallic green paint job with some nice pin stripes. My kids called it “Dad's green racing car”. We lived in a fancy neighborhood in north Pittsburgh, and one Saturday afternoon I fired up the kit car. My neighbor's father-in-law was visiting and he came running out of their house. He recognized that hotrod car sound. Both his daughter and my wife were displeased by the spectacle. One time I took my Dad for a ride. My Dad was a tough guy. The car was strong. When I hit the gas it twisted the rear leaf springs to grind on the u-joints. My dad did not like it. Another employee I knew had taken my boss for a ride in his new Corvette,... I wanted to get even. So I took my boss for a ride. My boss wasn’t a car guy, but he appreciated attention. People would pull up alongside us at stoplights, roll down their windows, and yell to ask “What is it?” It was a uncomfortable, windy, and hot day and my boss liked it. One Saturday morning I drove it to a strip mall, parked 2 blocks away. Later I went into a barber shop. The shop was full of working guys like me who got hair cut on weekends. I had to wait. One of the customers said to a barber, “Do you see that green car down there?” The barber replied, “Yeah, I walked down and looked at it. It's nuthin' special.” I was amused that a barber would leave a shop full of waiting customers to walk two blocks to look at a car that was “nuthin' special”. Then in the mid-90's I met a car guy in Delaware. To make a long story short, I hooked the kit car up to my SUV with a tow bar and pulled it 4 hours, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, to Delaware. I gave it to the car guy. He didn’t offer to pay for it and I didn’t ask him to. I just gave him the car and the signed title. Years later he died. His family sold the cars. My green racing car is long gone to who knows where. That's OK. It was Nuthin' Special. Mendal Yoho

This month we started out the Biloxi VFW post 2434 for their show. Had a great turnout, nice shady spots and good food. Did our weekly Thursday night car/bike night at the Silver Slipper Casino. Later in the month we got to the Jeff Davis 3rd. Friday night cruisin. Next up was the Pass Christian Harbor for the 3rd. Saturday night cruisin. This one always turns into a big group sitting around have a blast. The 4th Friday got us up in the Kiln for the Cruise-In Cafe cruise -in, they have cruiser meal specials and give a best cruiser plaque. The 4th Saturday is a can't miss at the Long Beach Harbor this one is starting to get a big turnout. The next show we made was at the Masonic Lodge in Bay Saint Louis. Had a good turnout at this one, and several places for the ladies to shop. I'll finish out this report with the Coast Cruizers Edgewater Mall cruise-in even on a night with some rain storms this one pulled in 60+ cars, always a nice cruise-in. Few pics from the Misfits last cruise-in of the year at the train depot in downtown Bay St. Louis. Great evening 40 cars enjoying the day. Few other pics. from the Knights of Columbus benefit show in the Kikn at Annunciation Church. 76 cars came out and supported a good cause. Food was good no rain all day, worked out great. People think we have a hobby, but cruising/shows four days a week every week it's a life. Only thing that I enjoy more is building the cars I'm riding in‌. Al

This should clarify things if pictures show up of shinny car...And yes I did have the shinny yellow car out all day, so if a few pictures of me cleaning and wiping a shinny car down show up it really did happen. But I have cleaned that a few times in the last 32 years I've owned it. Allen. Hehehe

Foot Notes: By Lynne Lightfoot My husband, Charlie, and I enjoy going to estate sales. I collect far too many things and really like the hunt for more. Charlie is very tolerant of this and likes to look for tools and things for his yard and man cave while I do my rooting around. So, in March 2016, when I saw the notification of a large estate sale near our home that included a boat, I told Charlie and my brother, Herbert, about it. Herb had been hunting for another boat for a while, so we all went together. In the huge barn of the sale were several cars that had been parked for a very long time and were part of the sale. They included a K-car, a Datsun 240Z and a 1952 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe 4-door sedan. The Chevy had been parked for at least 20 years and was covered in dirt and grime. It also had no title or keys. Charlie fell in love at first sight. He and Herb went over the car from bumper to bumper, inside and out, and decided it was sound and worth taking a chance on. Then they had to convince me. That wasn’t such an easy sell. I know Charlie has dreamed of having his own, old car to restore for a long time, but I also know that such a project is very time-consuming and can be a huge money pit. Neither was something I was looking forward to. Charlie argued that he and Herb needed a project to keep them busy. Herb had recently been in an accident and was not able to return to his former job, but he could definitely tinker with the car. Charlie reasoned that Herb wouldn’t have to climb or do very heavy lifting, but he could work on an engine! Herb needed something to do to keep him off of the couch! What they had in their favor is that I love a bargain! What woman doesn’t? The price on the Chevy was crazy low. But I am rational and always do some research before jumping into something like this, so I did just that. I wanted to be sure this was not a big mistake. So, I Facetimed an old friend, John, who owns one of the best body shops in our area to get his opinion. John instantly recognized the car and knew that he was the one who had painted it about 30 years ago. He knew the car and the man whose estate the car was in. When I told him the asking price he told me to “just give the man the money.” He said that I should buy it immediately and assured me that, if we brought it home and parked it in our front yard, within a week we would have an offer and could triple our investment. So, guess who bought a car? While in the driveway of the estate sale, right after making the purchase, another man came up to the operator and inquired about the ’52 Chevy. He told him that I had just bought it. The man then asked me what I had paid so I doubled the amount. He was still interested in looking at it and maybe making me an offer. I was tickled! I could maybe sell this thing on the spot and make money without having to do anything! That’s the ticket! Charlie thought I was insane and wouldn’t let me even entertain the guy’s offer. Reality began to set in. We owned a car. Let the games begin.
I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, smoking too much, impulse buying and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That's my idea of a perfect day! They keep telling us to get in touch with our bodies. Mine isn't all that communicative, but I heard from it the other day after I said, 'Body, how'd you like to go to the six o'clock class in vigorous toning?' Clear as a bell my body said, 'listen wench ... do it and die.' The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing (and then they marry him). A friend of mine confused her valium with her birth control pills. She had 14 kids, but she doesn't care. I know what Victoria's Secret is. The secret is that nobody older than 20 can fit into their stuff. Skinny people tick me off! Especially when they say things like, 'You know, sometimes I forget to eat.' You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat. If men can run the world, why can't they stop wearing neckties? I mean how intelligent is it to start the day by tying a noose around your neck?

Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage - October 2016 It's almost that time of year again. Yes gearheads throughout South Louisiana and Mississippi, and other points around the Nation, will soon be flocking, and in droves I might add, to the beaches of South Mississippi for Cruisin’ the Coast, our yearly automobile extravaganza. In my opinion it is a fantastic economic engine for the state of Mississippi and a real boost for several municipal economies along the coast as well. I always look forward to this as a massive rolling and ever changing car show. For me its been kind of easy to see most if not all of the cars that participate, since I have volunteered to work with various clubs that have participated in this almost from its humble beginning's. There have been several new sites open up since the first Cruisin’ the Coast event took place in 1997, and if my math is correct this will be the 20th edition of this automotive adventure. The early Cruise Central for many years was Jones Park, right there on Hwy 90 just left as you came down Hwy 49. Personally I never thought it would move from that site, but with the growth in participants and the mess of 2005 its been moved to its preset location, and another fine site, to me anyway, as well. Its got lots of shade, ample parking, great views of the beach and road if you are lucky enough to get a spot to park along the front fence. Most participants in this have their favorite venues to visit as well. Many folks like the charm and shade of the Ocean Springs site, and still others are crazy about the Edgewater Location. While many just enjoy going to Cruse Central just to hang out and meet up with old and new friends. While there are many that like the D'Iberville site, and others have discovered that they are enjoying the steady growth of the Pass Christian location. In my opinion (for what its worth) the most popular site, since the very first Cruisin’ the Coast event, has been Bay Saint Louis. Historically it is always overflowing with crowds and cars. Participants always have that site in mind once they have picked up their credentials and head off to their fun with cars party. I have had much fun volunteering at four out the six venues, all have their own unique character as well. They are all the best places to see unique vehicles and a very diverse group of car minded folks. I have met and made new friends there, listened to many and told some stories of my own. I've helped push cars out the way for whatever mechanical dilemma they were struggling through. I have brought folks to parts stores to get a much needed part to get them going again, and sometimes have helped in the repairs. Its what you do when you volunteer at Cruisin’ the Coast. I forgot another important venue, the Swap Meet at the Coast Coliseum, is another great spot to search for and purchase that last part needed to finish up your classic or muscle car as well. While you are there take a short stroll to the rear parking garage and go watch the event at the slalom track, who knows you may even get to take a ride with one of the fast folks out there too. There is lots to do and lots to see, and I have not even touched on the events during the week that lead up to the venues being open. With all the venues and events going on as you can see it takes a large group of people to make your fun with cars happen. There will be hundreds of volunteers (99% are car club folks) sporting a bright yellow shirt and on the back will be some bold letters spelling Staff. Search out one or two of them thank them and just share a positive word or two with them, they will be glad you did, and if by chance you happen to come down in the Bay, look me up and say hi. I'll be somewhere there sporting my yellow shirt as well. It’s here…the biggest car event in this part of the country, America’s Largest Block Party…Cruisin The Coast, October 2-9, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast…one of the largest car shows in the country! This year is the 20th annual event and Woody Bailey and the entire CTC crew will roll out the red carpet for cruisers and the car culture. 11 car clubs and over 700 volunteers support the Cruisin The Coast event. CTC has a huge economic impact for the Mississippi Gulf Coast, over $25 million dollars will be spent on the coast by cruisers during that week. It is the largest stand alone event in the state. The target number for cars this year is 8,000 registered cars, last year’s number was 7,639 from 41 different states. Your car must be at least 25 years old, or older to register. Thousands and thousands of hot rods will also be here that are not old enough to register or not here early enough to register, that just come for the party. On Saturday, August 13, 2016 Judy and her son Kendrick drove their 1962 Chevrolet Corvette for the first time in over 35 years. This special car was purchased by Judy’s husband Tom in 1978 and the car was last driven in 1980. Tom was a Mechanical Engineer (Judy is an Industrial Engineer) who grew up in the Muscle Car era of the 1960’s. A car lover his entire life, he was especially interested in first generation Corvettes (1953 to 1962). These were the C1’s. Tom had a chance to purchase a 1962 Corvette in 1978 and he did just that. The car had been last owned by a fellow in Copiah County, Mississippi and had seen some racing action toward the end of its first lifetime. Once Tom had possession of the car, he immediately started thinking about getting it to first be a street driver and, later, about doing a complete restoration on the car. He started collecting parts in the 1980’s and 1990’s and on up through 2014. The car was in relatively good condition when Tom bought it all those years ago. Tom moved three times, taking the car with him to every new home. Tom married and a family soon came along slowing, as it often does, his plans to restore his ’62 Corvette. Spending time with his family (daughter Christel and his son Kendrick and later on, his grandchildren) took priority. The car itself was produced with a 327 cubic inch engine with 340 horsepower. It had high performance cylinder heads, intake manifold, carburetor and camshaft. This engine was second in horsepower only to the 327 fuel injected engine in 1962. The car had its original Borg Warner 4 speed manual transmission and had both topsa convertible top and a second removable hard top. There were few power accessories offered in 1962 and so such options as power brakes and power steering were not even available. The same was true for air conditioning. Although silver when new the car had been through a succession of colors, first black, then red and finally white. The interior was black. Tom developed cancer in 2005 and after a courageous fight he passed away in April 2015. His plans for restoration of the Corvette were never far from his thoughts and he has scores of notebooks and copies of letters and then emails showing his search for correct parts for this car. Even during the last few weeks of his life, Tom enjoyed researching correct number parts online and updating his Corvette restoration planning files. The original engine for the Corvette was long gone. One has to remember that this car is over 50 years old! Trying to keep the Corvette as original to its original manufacture, Tom found a correctly

numbered 327ci engine block in Wisconsin. Not only was it correctly numbered, it also had a casting date that closely matched the manufacture date of the car itself. The same was true for the correct cylinder heads, intake manifold, high performance exhaust manifolds and many other parts, including a high performance NOS (new old stock) forged crankshaft. This was a crankshaft still in its original shipping box from 1962. One other item that Tom purchased was a complete 1961 Corvette! This car was all to pieces and he stored it in a local self storage facility. Opening the door of this storage stall was akin to the opening of King Tut’s tomb. This car which had a good body on a good frame with 50% of all the original parts sold quickly to a Corvette guy who had a had several early 60’s C1’s but had let all of them get away from him. He will keep this one, which he is restoring. After Tom passed away, Judy began to think about what she should do with both the ’61 and the ’62. Selling was an option

and these C1’s are quite desirable and bring some pretty big $’s. She also thought of having the car restored and then driven and shown by her son and her (and daughter!) At the forefront of the decision process was the family’s desire to honor Tom, and to help realize the dream that he had for the car, to be restored with correct part numbers, using his research that he had enjoyed for so many years, in addition to the parts that he had invested in. Some friends put Judy in touch with Mike Martin. a retired guy in Madison, MS. that, as a hobby, does some restoration work on classic cars. Judy talked to Mike and discussed her plans for the car and to see what might be possible and costs and build times, etc. She decided to proceed with a full frame off, nut and bolt restoration (this means every nut and bolt are addressed in some manner). Work began on January 9, 2016. After discussion and contemplation, Judy asked that the car be painted black. She asked that as many of the original parts for the car be used in the restoration. Disassembly began and the car was taken completely apart. Tom’s correct engine was taken apart and taken to a local, very competent machine shop for machining and balancing. New pistons, rods, bearings, and camshaft (with a grind very similar to the original) were installed with an eye toward dependability and drivability. The body was removed from the frame with the thought that the frame would be finished first. The frame was sandblasted and then primed and painted.
The intent was to finish the build out of the frame before putting the unpainted body back on it. The engine was mounted in the frame along with the rebuilt transmission and completely rebuilt front and rear suspension. The exhaust system was mounted along with some electrical wiring. New brake and fuel lines were installed along with a rebuilt original gas tank. The new radiator and its shroud were installed. Then the complete unit was wrapped in plastic wrap to protect all the as new surfaces from the paint and body work that was to come. There are many vendors that carry parts for these early Corvettes so getting most of the parts needed was not an issue. Paying for them is the issue! The complete body was returned to the frame and body work began. The car had had a small crash or two through the years and its fiberglass body had some signs of this especially on the underside of the various panels. All of this was repaired to as close to “as new” as possible. The body had been stripped to the original fiberglass in one of its previous paintings so it was not necessary to strip it again. The original body had many ‘waves’ in it and there were many, many small hairline cracks in the fiberglass especially around the openings for the trunk and hood and these had to be address. The work took the car to a point where it was ready for painting. It was decided that more of the reassembly would take place including getting the car into a running and operating status before the final paint was applied. So the some of the interior was installed along with all of the new wiring. A new air conditioning system was installed. The instrument cluster and windshield wiper motor had been sent off for rebuilding and these assemblies were reinstalled. The engine was started and run in to break in the camshaft. The brakes were made operable along with the steering. The car was masked where necessary and final prep for painting was done. The car was primed with epoxy primer and this was wet sanded prior to final painting. Axalta (DuPont) paints, primer and clear coat were used in the painting process. Once painted and cleared, the final paint was wet-sanded with 1000, 1500, 3000 and 5000 grit sandpaper, and the final paint is very nice. Final buffing took place and then final assembly, with much of the bumpers, trim, lights, windshield frame and glass, etc installed. The car had its interior reinstalled. The car is considerably more straight and slick than how a new ’62 Corvette would have been produced in the GM St. Louis assembly plant. Judy and Kendrick drove the car and are excited about the finished vehicle. Tom had a plan in mind for his special 1962 Corvette from the time he purchased it. He never saw that planned realized, however, through the efforts and interest of his wife and family the car stands as a rolling tribute to Tom.

By Candy Cocktail Like so many of our readers, I grew up with a penchant for the nostalgic, from movies to cars to clothes. Yet one of my favorite things has always been pinup artwork. I could spend hours looking at the clever retro images. Famous works of art from Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren and Jay Scott Pike still fill my computer and walls. I adore the timeless artwork of stunning women in seductive poses and kitschy situations. The timeless images inspired me to do pinup modeling. The images have not just inspired me, but likewise an array of artists. The pinup artwork created decades ago changed art in pop culture. Ever the fan of pinup art, I still follow a number of modern day pinup artists on social media. I enjoy seeing my online feed full of these artists’ burlesque, pinup and rockabilly inspired art. As a fan of their art, I decided to do a series of upcoming articles featuring these modern day pinup artists; how they have taken this style and made it their own. I knew our readers would enjoy seeing and reading about their fabulous work. These artists come from around the world and have made pinup art their own, each in a beautiful and unique way. This month I am featuring four of today’s modern day pinup artists. Andrew Tarusov Russian artist Andrew Tarusov, known as Askandy to his 54,000 plus Instagram followers, was originally born in Rybinsk, in the Yaroslavl area in 1986. He attended arts school and moved to Yaroslavl to go to Fine Arts College where he studied painting and acquired knowledge of the classics. Next he entered The Russian State University of Cinematography in Moscow to study computer graphics and animation and he took painting and drawing classes. This year he graduated from the university with the highest score in animated film on his diploma. He is currently working in animation and making outstanding cartoons for people as a freelancer. Additionally, he draws illustrations for magazines and advertisements. In 2012 he drew his first calendar called Apocalypse Tomorrow. It was just a joke featuring pinup girls and variations of the world’s end. It became very popular on the Internet. A typography company sponsored it and together they printed it to sell in numerous countries around the world. A year later he drew another popular calendar about classic Hollywood monsters with great actresses. This year he chose to draw the Olympic Games as the calendar theme. The new calendar has become ultra-popular not only on the internet, but on TV and in papers as well. This time, Andrew decided to print the calendar himself. Tarusov’s inspirations are Gil Elvgren, Vargas, Bettie Page and many contemporary artists, such as J Scott Campbell, Otto Schmidt and others. All of his artwork is drawn on the computer. His style is mixing pinup basics with retro comics style. Sometimes when doing work for himself he uses watercolor. Vintage style pinups and comics are what he likes most of all. He has done work for Twentieth Century Fox, Disney, Maxim, Cosmopolitan and Rolling Stone and had works published in GQ, Time, MTV and USA Today. Andy also does an extraordinary Tim Burton series of artwork. His artwork was so exceptional that last month he received an invitation to the Hollywood premier of the new Tim Burton film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, where he had the opportunity to meet what I consider to be one of the greatest filmmakers of our time, Tim Burton himself! After 10 years of studying art and animation, he recently moved and settled into life in Los Angeles, California where he is married with two lovely dogs. For fans of his art, starting in September he is using Kickstart for his first, big official Artbook. Frill Of The Rush From sunny Redondo Beach, California is Samantha Hammer, the artist behind Frill Of The Rush. Her distinctive brand pays homage to the world of burlesque. She received her Associates of Arts degree in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California. The creator of Frill Of The Rush fell in love with burlesque and pinup culture when, at 13 years old, she stumbled upon seeing an image of Dita Von Teese in a magazine for the first time. Discovering Ms Von Teese led her into the fun, glittering and glamorous world of burlesque and classic pinup icons, like her favorite pinup icon, the infamous Bettie Page. Dita Von Teese is her favorite burlesque performer. She is such a fan of Dita that she did a collection of illustrations inspired solely by the Queen of Burlesque. Using the mediums of watercolor, pen and ink, fashion illustration, computer aided design and fashion design, Samantha’s artwork was inspired by her favorite artist, Olivia De Berardinis. Her adoration for this style has been unwavering in all aspects of her life, from her personal fashion style to the creation of her brand Frill Of The Rush, which is ultimately a celebration of pinup and burlesque merging with her artwork and fashion designing. Gemini.H The woman behind the name of Gemini.H is a French artist, illustrator and designer. With parents and grandparents working in the printing industry and not much else to entertain a young girl in a small village, it was only natural that she developed an interest in creative and artistic activities. Even at a young age, she knew that she wanted to create art. The most significant factor in her process of becoming an artist and illustrator was the support of her parents. Throughout her schooling, her enthusiasm for history and art made the curious child even more curious about other cultures, about the past, about other people and their own stories; Art was her way of expressing her feelings about it. Soon she was spending her time reading classical books and watching classical movies and spending her weekends in castles and other historical places. History and arts became her most beautiful love story. A painting, a costume, a hairstyle, music; they all made history come alive. She spent her childhood in Normandy where the scars of the bombs from World War II are still ever present. It was a place where some people still remember life at that moment in time and would share their emotions and their memories with the young artist. Gemini.H attributes this as the place where her love for the 40s and 50s developed. At the beginning of June every year there was an event to celebrate the D-day anniversary with swing in the streets, GI’s parade and her grandparents’ stories. Her two grandmothers greatly influenced her passion for vintage life. This love was shaped with her grandmother’s adoration of Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, Tino Rossi and stories of her life in Paris after the war and getting ready to go to the ball with her friends along the river, while her other grandmother was in love with Fred Astaire, always wearing a pink gingham dress, red lips, red nails on point and her heels, even at 70 years old...how could Gemini.H resist falling in love with the timeless era? Gemini.H thinks this is what makes her artwork different. Her work is not about drawing pinup, nor is it about drawing burlesque dancers or making portraits of pretty girls. For her, it is all about making art that people want to own and look at, just like an old movie. She says that art is useless for some people, but for her, art is the only way to feel, and especially the way to feel about a time that is lost forever. She is not doing pin up art. Currently residing in Germany, she considers herself an artist through birth. After finishing her classic artistic education with her college degree, Martha self-educated herself for many years through practicing, working with other artists and simply learning by doing. Besides being an artist, she works in a hospital as a radiologist. As she says, the starving artist cliché is certainly not a myth. Martha says she always felt like she was born in the wrong decade. The Swap Meet What do you do when you are confronted with a swap meet? Yes, me too. I just have to see what is there. I pretty much know there isn’t someone there selling $5.00 bills for $1.00, but just in case, it needs to be checked out. There just might be that one naïve individual selling some valuable auto part at a ridiculously low price. Well, there was nothing different for me when it came to the swap meet at the 42nd Annual Frog Follies this year. I didn’t find anything there that I didn’t know I needed, but it is sure fun poking around. It was hot! 100 degrees or so. The humidity was super high. It rained in the night to make plenty of mud. I loved it! I don’t think about that because it is just more fun than I deserve to have! The swap meet was incredible and though I didn’t find anything that I needed, there were thousands of people who did. I was in Louisville, Kentucky for the Street Rod Nationals and the Frog Follies swap meet is way better. Look at the photos and enjoy. Notice how some guys get sleepy between shopping trips!! I was in Evansville, Indiana when the Frog Follies had their beginning show. I know I won’t live long enough to see the last. The 42nd show this year had more than 3800 Pre-1949 Street Rods on hand. It was the best ever! Not necessarily in the number of rods present, but in the fun. Nothing tops the Frog Follies for fun with your buddies, the delicious food and drinks at low prices, the bands and dances, the collector Hot Wheels car, the magnificent t-shirts, the free ham dinner on Saturday night ( and how amazingly efficient it is run. It fascinates me every single year.), the valve cover races, the vendors, and all the happy people having a great time, which is enhanced by the $15.00 entry fee. I am pre-registered for next year, and yes, it is still $15.00! Thank you E’ville Iron Street Rods LTD for all your hard work and dedication to Pre-’49 all these years and providing us with the greatest Street Rod event in the United States. Since 1975, each August the E'ville Iron Street Rod Club has put on a rod run for street rod owners. It is held at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center in Evansville Indiana. At the first event we had 44 registered street rods. Since that time the Frog Follies has grown to average over 4000 street rods each year. The event became known as the Frog Follies after the club had a bull frog race at the first event. We've had entries from Alaska, Australia, Canada, and all 48 continental states over the years. Since 2010 we can boast that the Frog Follies "is THE largest PRE 49 Street Rod event anywhere in the world!" We provide fun for the whole family with games, activities, and dances during the weekend. Our automotive swap meet is one of the largest in the United States and is held in conjunction with the rod run. The commercial street rod vendor area has over 600 hundred spaces and the used parts section of the swap meet area continues to grow each year. It has plenty of new parts to build your new street rod along with plenty of rusty parts and collectibles to satisfy you're your appetite for automobilia. Our concessions are owned and operated by the club so that you can keep your expenses at an honest rate and spend your money on other things you desire. We have collector Frog Follies items for sale on the grounds in addition to all the free items you get with your entry. It is also the only place on the planet that you can get your world famous Frog Follies Rod Run T shirt! Since 1975, with the help of several local groups the rod run has grown and with the continued support from street rodders from all over the country, E'ville Iron has donated over 2 million dollars to local charities.. 47th NSRA Street Rod Nationals were at the Kentucky Expo Center. The cars came rolling in with over 10,000 vehicles, and array of colors and models. The Louisville National is th "Granddaddy" of all Rodding events. There are many contest and activities for the Rodders to stay busy. There is a large swap meet , Women's world and lots and lots of vendors,you cannot see it all. After a full day, if you can wiggle there is concerts in the evening to finish the day. The new event this year was the Auto Cross Streetkhana it is a test of drivers skills and ability to maneuver a course of cones in shortest time possible. There was a professional team bringing their auto cross expertise to show you how its done. You could also ride with them, If you dare to. I have only touched on a few things that happens here,but to top it off a new built car is given away to a registered participant. This year the giveaway car was 1932 Ford Woodie. A very happy couple won it. Yes, like they say this show is the "Granddaddy". Already looking forward for next year. Thanks Donna

Benefits of Membership Valuable Services for Our Members The National Street Rod Association produces eleven of the world's biggest and best specialty vehicle events, and provides valuable services to its membership. A main benefit is the monthly publication, StreetScene Magazine, which is mailed directly to each member's home. StreetScene provides many services only available to the membership. NSRA has a network of state representatives, all enthusiasts, to assist on a local level, and a unique, highly respected, nationwide voluntary Vehicle Safety Inspection program which is applauded by both state and national legislators. Events and Activities for the Whole Family The fun part of NSRA comes in the form of activities. The premier event in the sport is the NSRA Street Rod NationalsÂŽ Plus, the world's largest automotive participant event, and it is supplemented with ten Divisional Nationals to bring the NSRA type of activity to even more parts of the U.S. The NSRA events are a combination of games, activities, mini-events and manufacturers selling trade shows, and every event is geared to family entertainment. What is a Street Rod? At no time in history have Americans been as interested in specialty automobiles as they are today. Be it a rebuilt old car or a newly constructed, limited production, special interest vehicle, this is the era of the unique to anyone interested in automobiles. One of the fastest growing groups of enthusiasts interested in the older cars are street rodders; the owners and builders of street rods. A street rod is the most practical type of old car. By definition a street rod is: An automobile of 1948 or earlier manufacture which has undergone some type of modernization, to include any of the following; engine, transmission, interior refinements, and any other modifications the builder desires. A street rod is to be driven to events under its own power and is to be used as a safe, non-racing vehicle for total family enjoyment. In addition, a street rod is a means of self expression for the creator. The builder of a street rod is not confined to guidelines set down by someone else...he can be his own man, and the street rod can be whatever he wants it to be, as long as the basic vehicle was manufactured prior to 1949. The street rod builder has the option of adding a late model engine and drive train from any make of car, he can modify the suspension to give better ride and handling characteristics, and he can incorporate whatever creature comforts he wants. Air conditioning, cruise control, AM -FM stereo radios and CD players, power steering and brakes, and automatic transmissions are common. The end result is an automobile tailored to the owner's wants, and yet it is a car that has the looks and charm of a vehicle 50, 60 or even 70 years old. And, as the builder has options when it comes to adding the type of equipment he wants, he can also use as mild or as wild a paint theme as he cares to, or he can modify the lines of the body to suit his own design. The sky is the limit, and he can do whatever he wants without worrying about standards set down by someone else. One of the best parts of owning a street rod, however, is not in the creating of a unique vehicle, but in its enjoyment after it is completed. With the modernization comes the ability to enjoy the vehicle in ways other resurrected old cars can not be. The vehicle can be driven for long distances in comfort, with safety to the passengers and others on the highway. In addition to making the car more comfortable, improvements in steering, lighting and brakes are nearly always included in the building of a street rod. A street rod is a nostalgia trip, and while it retains most of the appeal of an old car, it still permits self expression by allowing the creator to incorporate his own ideas in paint, body work and the mechanics that make it go. In this era of special interest automobiles, the street rod is one of the truest forms of personalized vehicles. Join the NSRA Today!

NSRA's Vehicle Safety Inspection Program is FREE! The NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection Program is completely voluntary, and includes 23 different items ranging from the lighting system to suspension (see list that follows), and the sole purpose of the safety inspection is to advise the vehicle owner of problem areas, either real or potential. As an "advisory" type inspection, it is only used to call the owner's attention to something which may have been overlooked. The inspection is not mandatory and has no effect on entering or taking part in NSRA events. The specialty vehicles NSRA members own are built to be driven on the streets and highways. They are used to transport people, often to far off locales for recreational enjoyment. The National Street Rod Association® is dedicated to vehicle safety and backs it up with a program that gives every owner the opportunity to have his/her vehicle safety inspected for free as often as they want with a strong emphasis on having it done at least once each year. Safety Inspection Even though this program is totally voluntary, the number of vehicles inspected grows every year. The NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection is offered at each of the thirteen annual NSRA events, and at hundreds of independently produced activities all across the country. The program has become so popular, in fact, that each spring there is a growing number of "Safety Runs" where the main theme is only the Safety Inspection to make sure the vehicles are ready for another season of trouble free, safe fun. While more and more specialty vehicle owners recognize the benefits of having their vehicles safety inspected every year, there is one group of them that is even more keenly aware of the program's value; the guys and gals that make up the all volunteer NSRA Safety Inspection Teams. There is one of these teams in every state, and in areas where the number of enthusiasts is more heavily concentrated there are additional teams so that as many of them as possible will have the opportunity to take advantage of the safety teams' services and expertise. These Safety Inspection Teams are providing a very worthwhile service for the National Street Rod Association, but what they are offering for free to the individual enthusiast is much more important...an extra set of eyes to notice a potentially life threatening condition before it becomes more of one. There are approximately 800 people involved in making the NSRA Vehicle Safety Inspection Program work, and they are do more than just talk about vehicle safety...they make it a reality! Considering the number of miles street rodders accumulate year after year on their street rods, this is a very safe hobby. With the emphasis NSRA puts on safety combined with the care street

rodders put into their vehicles when constructing and maintaining them and the services provided by the NSRA Safety Inspection Teams, there is every reason to believe it will remain a safe hobby well into the future. While attending an NSRA National event, take a few minutes to visit the Safety Inspection Area and learn a little more about this great program first hand...take the time to have your vehicle safety inspected...or simply note the number of NSRA Safety Inspection Verification Stickers on the windshields of the vehicles you look at. Vehicle safety is an important part of our hobby and most all enthusiasts recognize that fact and are doing something to prove it... they are having their vehicle safety inspected every year. Vehicle Safety Inspection Requirements Required Equipment • Horn: Electric only. • Speed Indicator: Speedometer or calibrated tachometer at 65 mph. • Rear View Mirror: One inside or outside on driver's side of vehicle. • Glass: Must be safety plate, lexon, or tempered glass. • Lighting: Hi-beam; low-beam; tail; brake; license. • Windshield Wiper: Electric or vacuum operated. • Automatic Transmission Lockout: Neutral and/or park start only. • Tires: 3/32 tread acceptable. Must meet D.O.T. specifications. • Steering No excessive "play" (2" radius max.) or binding; system must be safely mounted. • Throttle Linkage: Must not travel past center. • Fuel System: Check Vent on Trunk and Interior Mounted Tanks; no clear, plastic lines allowed. No leaks. • Exhaust System: No Leaks: Must pass rear edge of front door and exit exhaust away from vehicle. • Self-aligning Rod End Bearings: Check for fractures, insert sloppiness or binding. • Shock Absorbers: One per wheel, no leaks, 2" travel in each direction. • Brakes: Four-wheel brakes, no leaks, check brake pedal travel, no copper tubing, check length of flexible lines. • Scrub Line: No steering, suspension or chassis components should be below this line. Recommended Equipment: May be reason for failure • Windshield: Should be AS-1. • Shift Pattern: Shift pattern should be visible except on three speed standard column shift.

Stefanie Lea As we pulled in the gates of The Gulfport Drag Way in Gulf Port Mississippi I could already tell this was going to be a weekend where the rubber meets the hot asphalt. This was my first trip to Gulfport Dragway for what is called THE ATOMIC BLAST. A name like THE ATOMIC BLAST in my mind had a lot to live up to. Sponsoring this 5th annual event, which has grown over the years, is Jimbo Perkins along with Theresa Reese of Gulfport Dragway. Also in attendance lurking around the track was Dennis Landry, better known as "Crab Man". I knew it was going to be a very exciting weekend, I just had no idea how life changing it was going to be for me. To most people this was just another weekend among friends and family. Car club members, classic car builders, hot rodders and of course Rat Rod lovers. For me this was the weekend I learned how to express myself again. I found the passion and drive within myself that I lost years ago,... this very weekend. With the help of a very dear friend who also became my mentor. I was able to find the beauty in a lot of different things this weekend, including myself, along with the love, respect and new outlook on life that my friend Jimbo has shown me. They say God sends you people at the right time, for the right reason and after this event I believe that now more then ever. I'll for ev er remember the ride we took in his beautiful Model A around the track that day. His words on how to overcome and how to find the beauty in things, even upon first glance at them. To find the beauty in the craftsmanship of everything and everyone was not only about the cars and trucks he was pointing out, it was about me too. Now I remind myself that no matter what type of car, truck or mini bike that roles into a event, they all came from a passion and a drive that we all have within ourselves. To see this passion alive within others around me this weekend sparked something within me that my friend reminded me I still have. Just like the same kind of passion that drove that person deep into the woods, to pull out and rebuild that old diesel truck with a friend and drive it from Mobile Alabama in what might be the last build of his life. Or the person that's so passionate about our country that he dedicated an old Gasser to our Military. Paying respect to all fallen soldiers as well as the retired and active duty soldiers in his own unique way. Down to the sleepless nights that have made some of the most unique builds. The ones that turned from a dream into a reality, with the love and drive to restore and put a personal spin on what was once your grandfather's hot rod. Down to every type of Rat Rod you could of think of. This same passion mixed with a imagination and skill that it must have taken to build a twin engine Rat Rod called "The Beast". Most of these Rat Rods look as if they're from outer space or designed by a mad scientist. But you will find them to be a well built work of art with varying types of material that come together to make a piece of art come to life on four wheels. I will always be amazed by all the time, energy and craft these hard working dreamers have. Their passion in the build is the same passion it takes to plan and pull off a show such as The Atomic Blast.

People walked along the acres set aside for this years swap meet gathering parts for future builds. You could just see the wheels turning in the heads of all those builders. I'm sure we will see the product of their vision next year. Maybe another two seated flame throwing recliner. Yep, a flame throwing recliner! The cars running down the drag strip, leaving smoke and screaming fans behind. Mini bike races stirring up dirt all over the place. Not a winner from this event, just the best mini bike, man or kid running last was the true champion here. The drag strip is full of people now. They either drove for hours to get here or the local guys that had to come check out all the excitement. This years Atomic Blast was full of so much more than I was ready for. Kids running around the pit area on mini bikes and tricked out bicycles. Set up behind those beautiful period correct classic hot rods were tents, where cooks were busy with their grills and coolers, laughter filled the air among friends old and new. This was truly more then just your average cruising or weekend getaway, it was a time to enjoy life. Time to embrace in the passion we all have for some of the same things in life. And when it couldn't get any better, I hear that voice. Yep, its the one only Crab Man! Crab Who? you might ask. Crab Man is the emcee of this event. Asking "You ready to kick this shin dig up a notch?". I had no idea I was in for the ride of my life as we pulled into the burnout pit in his "Six Pack Pretty" burnout cat that looks like it lived through an Atomic Blast already. I was told, "sit down and hold darling, its fixing to get loud, hot and dirty." With his cordless mic in hand, he was egging all other burnout cars to line up, he was teasing them and calling them out for what was fixing to turn into a show down among them all. I found myself searching for a seat belt. He looked at me and laughed in a way that I'll never forget. I braced myself in that rusted beauty and held on for dear life. He turned the mic off handed it to me and said "Here we go!" For what seemed like 20 minutes he would spin those tires til the whole car was full of smoke. Turning left, right then left again. So loud you couldn't even hear your own screams. Not knowing where the wall was due to all the smoke that was pouring off those burning tires. Being hit with the pieces of rubber from what seemed
like scrap metal but was really the tires falling apart right underneath me. Then what felt like a ATOMIC BLAST going off under my seat! It was the left tire giving in to the burnout madness he was bragging about only minutes ago!! I could only for a brief minute hear the roar of the crowd. Just when the smoke cleared long enough to get my bearings he went again! Right, left, then left and right burning what was left of the right tire as well as smoking out the crowd surrounding the burnout pit. I looked up at him and saw this little evil grin on his face and the right tire went off like a bomb. You could see this was his passion. And now my weekend had come full circle. Full of excitement, new friendships and even more importantly a new me. I knew then I had arrived at THE ATOMIC BLAST.

It’s cruiser time for the Gulf Coast, and we all get to stare at the “oldies” that have been rebuilt and some of us bought new off, the floor! (show room) I remember the one car I had to have a 1957 “T” Bird! I bought it off the floor for $3670.00! It was black, had both tops, and every option that was made! I kept it until 1959 when the 59 Vette came out, and goodbye 57 “T” Bird! I had a habit of changing cars every 2 years, my payment was always in the $50.00 range with my 2 year old trade in. I never bought a battery or a tire in 8 or so years. As some of you remember, back in 1950 I had moved to Memphis Tenn. With Joe Lucy the guy who owned 2 midgets and was part owner of Commercial Carriers based in Memphis. (see photo) I was 23 years old and the world was mine. At this time Danny Burke was driving Joes #4 (former Bud Hemphill Car) and I’m in the older #5 (both midgets) and happy to have the ride! The #5 was formerly driven by “Vic” Rothe and or “Doc” Cossie. (it was a very good car). On Friday morning Joe comes into the shop where I’m working on the front spring of the #5 car. In the 40’s (1940) - (1949) the Kurtis Midgets were 2 cross springs, one in front and one in the rear. You know that the GT-40 from Ford that won LeMans 3 years (1960’s) was a 2 cross spring racer that was powered by the “460” , on Lincolns front inside name plate it said “375 horse power @4400 R.P.M. Of course they turned it a bit tighter, probably 5800-6000 which would bump it to 500 H.P. Back to Joe and Friday morning. He says “I want you to deliver a pick up to the dealer in West Memphis. “While your there, I want you to go to the track in Lehi and give me a report on a driver by the name of “Hooker Hood”. So I go over to the track (we ran the Midgets there every Saturday nite) and go down to the pits and watch him work on his #99 Sprint car. (see photo) Then on the same program he is running 1937 Ford Coupe in the “stock class”. After the night is over (he won the main in Sprints). I ask him if he is interested in a Midget ride. He says “nope I got a ride, but I don’t have to work on it, and my Sprinter and Coupe keep me plenty busy, in addition to the gas station I own and run. (see photo) So, I go back to Joe and say “you buying another car?” Joe says “no Danny is moving on, and the 4 car is open and I’m looking around before Danny leaves”. This makes me a little muffed but “I’m doing O.K. in the #5. Two weeks later Danny leaves and Joe says “you tow the 5 as always and load the #4 on the trailer”. I look at him (due to travel expense on towing a race car behind my 46 Ford) and say “I’ll need gas money, and you know my 46 uses lots of gas with the 2 carbs and stuff, and don’t be doing 80 or 85 with that new Lincoln cause I don’t need to wear out my car keeping up”. (at that time national speed limit was 55 and 45 towing a trailer) So, off to Cedar Rapids, Iowa we go, and pull into the 1 mile dirt track that is usually used for horses. We pull into the pits and unload both cars, just as we get done unloading, this guys walks up and says to Joe “I’m Eddie Moore” and what's the deal on the #4 car? Joe says “Danny left to go out west and I thought you would like the ride”. “Be nice not to have to work on one, and pay for parts and things.” He smiled again and slipped into the cockpit like he was made for it. Eddie

looked at Joe and said, “if I run your car today, how about Larry running mine, so I can keep car points?” “Joe” said “O.K.” and I looked at Joe and I wasn’t smiling, and he knew I didn’t like the deal. “Joe” I said, “who in hell is this guy”? Joe replied “he is last years St. Louis Racing Assoc. Champion and he won it in that car of his your going to drive”. To make this story short I passed Eddie on the 9th lap for the lead in his own car! Joe was grinning and said “I finally got you to stand on it , so start working on the #4 car, its your ride”.

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eightyseven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze. "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel." "No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made Friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets." She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. ! The apostle Paul put it this way, “Forgetting what lies behind, I strain toward what lies ahead.” That word “strain” indicates it’s going to take effort. If you go through a bad break or a loss, the easy thing to do is sit around and talk about how bad life is treating you. But if you’re going to keep moving forward, you’ve got to have a strong will. You’ve got to rise up like Paul and say, “That’s it. I am not holding on to these ashes. I know that what’s in my future is greater than what’s in my past. It is getting close to fall and all of the big car shows are coming up in the next 2 months on the Gulf Coast. So people need to eat and here is a few place from Bay St Louis to Panama City Beach. If your are in Bay St Louis for Cruisin’ the Coast. The best thing is to ask one of the Misfits Street Krewzers members. Things have really taken off over there on the beach and if you have been to the train depot there are some nice restaurants across the street. Now if you want to ride a little, you can go up Hwy 603 to Kiln, MS. There is a cafe up there called the Cruise‐in cafe. You might see our great football player around town. Now just down the road a little ways is the Kiln‐Delisle Road. On that road is a place called Dempsey’. They have seafood, steaks, and sandwiches. Then visit next door at the da Swamp Shack featuring local artist. Now moving down Hwy 90 going east. On Menge Ave, in Pass Christain is a placed called Daddz’s. Just go north across the railroad tracks and on the left will be North Street can’t miss it. They have good home cooking. Now to Gulfport. Just south of the railroad track on Hwy 49 West side is the Palace restaurant. They are open 7 until 2 pm. Here again good home cooking and daily special. Then over on Tegarden Road is a Mexican restaurant called El Aguita. Here the food is a little different. It has a lot of food from the southern part of Mexico. Not so much the Tex‐Mex food. A great change and I think you will be surprised at the great food. Now to Biloxi, up on Pass Road is Port City Grill a little pass Edgewater Mall going to the east. Or if you happen to be downtown Biloxi, you can eat at the Service Station on the corner of Main and Howard. The last is Ocean Springs. There are 2 great places over there. One is called FrogHeads Gill across from the Post Office on Hwy 90. Has great wraps, burgers and the best bread pudding that comes as a side to you meal. The other is called Woody’s out pass the Hospital on the south side of Hwy 90. It is in a little strip mall. Woody’ has some of the best Ribs and pull pork around, with build your own burger, plus the other great burgers. Now if you make it to Panama City Beach in November, there are to good places to eat. One is the All American Dinner on Beach Road and down about 1 1/2 miles east is Jeanie’s cafe. A great place for Breakfast and lunch. I have ate at all of the above place and can’t say a bad thing about any of them. The food has been great and the service has been wonderful. I hope you enjoy the food as much as we have. Till we eat again J. R. I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd, but he just ate grass and wouldn't even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows and within two days, all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor's cows. He's like a machine! I don't know what was in pills the Vet gave him …But they kind of taste like peppermint!

A Crash Course for the Motorcyclist:
Accident Scene Management Scott A. Williams September 01, 2016 You ride a motorcycle, probably with other motorcyclists. While riding, you constantly scan for hazards to avoid problems before they happen. Still, accidents can happen: a deer leaps suddenly into a rider’s path, a distracted driver drifts into a rider’s lane or a rider enters a curve too fast and goes down. For discussion, assume an accident involved members of your riding group. Who’d be first on the scene? Probably you. In effect, you’d be a first responder. But even if you’re not a professional first responder, like a paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), you could prevent further injury, set the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in motion and help treat the injured until professional help arrives. With the right training, you could do this. Accident Scene Management, Inc. (ASM) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to reducing injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists through first response education. It’s the only accredited, non-profit bystander program in the U.S. In “A Crash Course for the Motorcyclist,” you learn basic skills to address the first five to 20 minutes at an accident scene. In “Advanced Bystander Assistance,” an extension of the basic program, you learn the skills to be a leader at the scene and assist the EMS. Registered nurse (RN), EMT and motorcycle rider Vicki RobertsSanfelipo created these courses. I attended a two-day, two-course ASM certification program in Florham Park, New Jersey, hosted by Russell and MaryAlice Breninger, both veteran riders and Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) with the all-volunteer Florham Park Memorial First Aid Squad. These aren’t motorcycle safety courses. They’re not about preventing injuries (except to yourself as a rescuer). They’re not first aid courses, although students do learn ways to treat and stabilize victims until professional help arrives. Rather, through classroom instruction and hands-on exercises, I learned what to do at an accident scene. The overall approach is easy to remember, using the acronym PACT:
helmet. Here ASM instructors Jeff West and Kathleen Bridgewater describe how these helmets work to help us realize that they might not need to come off to provide breathing assistance. Instructor Kathleen Bridgewater, an RN and motorcyclist, discussed the importance of calming an accident victim until professional help arrives. “Stay with them and talk to them. Tell them your name and ask them theirs. Reassure them that you’re there to help. Make conversation that also provides information. Can you move your leg OK? When was the last time you had something to eat or drink? Do you have any allergies? Are you taking any medications? Is there someone we can notify?” It helps to have someone write down the answers so first responders can evaluate how a victim’s condition may have changed. When professional emergency responders do arrive, don’t leave. “They need information you have,” said Bridgewater. “You also may be helpful in moving victims or keeping onlookers at a distance. EMS pros appreciate the help that a knowledgeable bystander can provide. If you’re certified in bystander assistance, you can do more to help than just get out of the way.” For me, the most valuable course components were the hands-on exercises. In one of many, we learned and practiced the proper technique for removing a full-face helmet from a victim. Maybe you thought the rule was “never remove a helmet” (I did), but there’s an exception: when a victim is not breathing and the helmet obstructs breathing assistance. Someone who’s not breathing will soon die, so knowing how to remove their helmet quickly while minimizing spinal cord movement could save their life. (We learned about Good Samaritan laws, too.) A few professional first responders were there, too, earning continuing education credits by learning specifics of accident scene management where motorcycle riders are involved. We learned that preventing further injury could be as simple as keeping space open for emergency vehicles. It could involve alerting motorists and directing traffic clear of the injured. It could require moving an injured rider away from a bike that’s on top of them, on fire or at risk of igniting, or leaking hazardous fluids. Next, we learned to assess the situation. Where are you? What’s happening? How many people are involved? How severe are the injuries? What types of vehicles are involved? How many? Instructor Jeff West, an EMR and motorcyclist, discussed the allimportant 911 call. “The EMS dispatcher will want the information that you’ve been collecting in your assessment, which helps determine what personnel and equipment to send, whether mutual aid is required and more.” West emphasized that you should never end a 911 call; let the dispatcher end the call. Not every rider in the group had experience with a flip-up, modular

1937 Plymouth P4 Deluxe, 4 door sedan with frame off restoration. Trim, grill and bumpers are in incredible condition. Nothing bent, chrome is great on nearly all parts. All new brake shoes, wheel cylinders, brake lines and fuel lines. Gas tank was acid dipped and double coated inside. It should last another 75 yrs. Engine is a 201 Flathead Six.
