Your feelings will want to pay people back. Feelings will tell you, “Get in there and get even. Stand up for yourself.” If you let feelings rule you, you’ll get upset. You’ll end up giving away your joy. Don’t get on board with your feelings. It says in Psalms, “God has given us the power to remain calm in times of adversity.” It doesn’t say God will keep all the adversity from us. It says that adversity will come, we’ll have opportunities to get upset, but God has given us the power to stay calm. Don’t let insignificant things steal your joy: the traffic, the person talking about you. Keep it in perspective. That’s not worth losing your joy over. You have health. You have life. You have freedom. You have opportunity. Don’t let the small things keep you from seeing the gift of this day. … Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Only days away from the one of the most popular car shows in the nation, Cruisin’ the Coast. According to a poll by USA Today, and announced by 10Best.com, Cruisin’ The Coast has been named the Best Car Event in the country, USA Today readers voted Cruisin’ as their favorite in the annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Cruisin’ The Coast is considered “America’s largest block party.” Imagine more than 7,000 vehicles — hot rods, classics, antique vehicles — in a massive car show along the beachside highway on the Mississippi Coast,” “Car lovers adore this annual event, which has taken over the Mississippi Gulf Coast every year since its inception in 1996. Cruise between the different venues, each a festival in and of itself, and catch live music, food, merchandise, a car auction, swap meet, parade and plenty of car talk.”

While I was looking for something to add to the above, I came across an article titled Highways & Byways of Mississippi by Kristy Westfall. Kristy wrote this for MotorSports in 2003
The Space Center and historic places to see are great cruising destinations too. Mississippi’s history is long and interesting. The cities, towns and roads bear up under the weight of time. Her roads and where they lead to is what Highways & Byways will

discover with you. Some roads will lead us to living breathing places others to significant historical markers and still others to interesting dead ends and extinct places. With old maps and new maps we will go the obscure highways, byways and waterways too. Some you will know, others will be a tantalizing Sunday excursion for you. We will try to give exact directions to places we have heard about and some information. We won’t tell you everything because, that would take the fun out of you going. The whole purpose is to tell you places of possible interest, things to see and do while you are out cruising around in your favorite vehicle. When Stennis Space Center located itself here in Mississippi, they moved a number of families from their towns and homes, to give the center a buffer zone for testing their engines. So there are a few deserted places on the Space center property. But, of more interest are the towns that are classified extinct that we can access, if we can find them. LOGTOWN (Hancock Co.) This old pirate town is just south of the NASA Stennis Space Center east of the Pearl River and south of Picayune. It is shown on a 1938 map north of the junction of present I-10/SH 607. NAPOLEON (Hancock Co.) Exact location not determined, but it is another old town near the NASA Stennis Space Center east of the Pearl River and south of Picayune. Pirates loved this area. Ships could float into the bayous and disappear. Towns were built to accommodate the pirates needs. (mixed company might read this so I won’t go into detail of what needs) Who knows what you may find if you float the hidden waterways in your boat. Pay heed though, those back byways of water have more then one type of danger. People have gone in but, never came out. There are more then just passing rumors of pirates being on these waters, and believe me, they are not chivalrous nor romantic swashbucklers. Here are a couple of emails …. Jimbo, Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage? His father takes him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must come into adulthood on his own. The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man! Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He has been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm. We too are never alone. Even when we don't know it, God is watching over us, sting on the stump beside us. When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him. Moral of the story: Just because we can't see God, doesn't mean He is not present. “For we walk by faith, not by sight”. And as we live each day, keep the following thoughts in mind….. Prayer is not a “spare wheel” that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a “steering wheel” that directs the right path throughout. Why is a car's front windshield so large and the rear view mirror so small? Remember the past, but don't live in the past---look ahead. Friendship is like a book. It takes a few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write. All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either. Often when we lost hope and think this is the end, God smiles from above and says, “Relax sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end!” When God solves your problems, you have faith in His abilities;

when God doesn't solve your problems, He has faith in YOUR abilities. A blind person asked St. Anthony: “Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?:” He replied, “Yes, losing your vision!” Worrying does not take away from tomorrow's troubles; it takes away today's peace. Cousin Alice Jimbo, I picked up a hitch-hiker the other day, seemed like a nice guy. After a few miles he asked me if I wasn't afraid that he might be a serial killer? I told him the odds of two serial killers being in the same car was extremely unlikely. …. ttommys@ Jimbo, First-year students at the Purdue School of Veterinarian Medicine were attending their first anatomy class with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, "In Veterinary medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor. The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving an animal's body." For an example, the professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger into the butt of the cow, withdrew it, and stuck his finger in his mouth. "Go ahead and do the same thing," he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took turns sticking a finger in the butt of the dead cow and, sucked on it.......followed by assorted gagging, retching and spitting, etc. When everyone had finished wiping their faces, the Professor looked at them and said, "The second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention. Life is tough but it's even tougher if you're stupid." gpteebyrd@ Till next month …… Jimbo RIP Cospo….. Put in a good word for us waiting our turn. Thank you for all the smiles...

By: John Lunstrum Well I always think of personal questions dealing with the automotive world when I produce my articles and this month I payed attention to the rubber in which we pay homage to on a daily basis; enjoy!! This is what I’ve found in my research on this topic! Unless you have tires on the brain, day-in and day-out, as we do, you probably don’t put a lot of thought into the origins of the automotive tire. However, if you’re the type of gearhead who slides behind the wheel and suddenly thinks, “I wonder what the evolution of passenger tires looks like?” then this post is for you. From tricycles to tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), tires have come a long way. We’re not going to document the invention of the wheel in this post, we’ll leave that to the prehistorians; however, we will attempt to take a walk (or roll, if you will) through time and cover the major innovations of the rubberized tire. In the Beginning: The Birth of the Modern Tire 1300s Word nerd alert! Historians at the online etymology dictionary write that the in the 1300s, “the notion is of the tire as the dressing of the wheel.” Therefore, “tire” or, if you’re British, “tyre” is simply a shortening of “attire.” 1880s Let’s fast forward some 500 years to 1845. Within weeks of one another, British inventor Thomas Hancock, and American inventor and entrepreneur, Charles Goodyear, were awarded patents for the vulcanization of rubber. Named after the Roman god of fire, vulcanization “is a chemical process for converting natural rubber or related polymers into more durable materials by the addition of sulfur…Vulcanized materials are less sticky and have superior mechanical properties”. Soon after Goodyear’s and Hancock’s patents, in 1847, Scottish inventor Robert William Thompson patented a solid pneumatic tire,
which uses rubber and enclosed air to reduce vibration. Proving to be too costly, his design never saw production. Necessity proved to be the mother of invention in 1888, though, when another Scot, John Boyd Dunlop, developed a tire that would make his child’s tricycle easier to ride over rough Belfast streets. After watching his son suffer from a nasty head cold, he decided to make his child’s doctor-prescribed trike rides more comfortable by attiring his tricycle with tires made of canvas bonded with rubber. As you may have guessed by his surname, Dunlop’s tires were a good deal successful than Thompson’s. Although his subsequent patent was invalidated in 1892 (Thompson had, after all, beat him to the patent office) his invention and his tires quickly caught on, thanks in large part to cyclist Willie Hume’s racing success. Here’s another name you may recognize: André Michelin. In 1895, he and his brother, Edouard, were first to use pneumatic tires on a horseless carriage. Known to most as the automobile. Although Goodyear died bankrupt, a company bearing his name, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, was formed in Akron, OH in 1898. The company remains headquartered in Akron to this day. 1900s According to ThoughtCo., “In 1903, P.W. Litchfield of the
6

Goodyear Tire Company patented the first tubeless tire, however, it was never commercially exploited until the 1954 Packard. In 1904, mountable rims were introduced that allowed drivers to fix their own flats. In 1908, Frank Seiberling invented grooved tires with improved road traction. In 1910, B.F. Goodrich Company invented longer life tires by adding carbon to the rubber.” And, in 1937, Goodrich developed the first synthetic rubber tire out of a patented substance called “Chemigum.” At the start of the Baby Boom, in 1946, Michelin developed the radial tire, which far outperformed the bias-ply tire constructed that preceded it. Although the use of radial tire technology spread quickly throughout Europe and Asia (it boasted superior handling and fuel economy numbers), it took a while to catch on in the US. It wasn’t until 1968, when the consumer advocacy publication, Consumer Reports, awarded its two top spots to radial tires. The magazine cited longer life, increased safety, handling, and noted that the in the long run, the costs of running on radials was far less bias-ply tires, which needed to be replaced frequently (Harvard Business School). After a slow start, the radial tire currently enjoys a market share of 100%. Run-flat tires are developed in the 1980s to help the driver maintain a constant driving speed and avoid accidents caused by dramatic loss of air pressure. 2000s As of 2007, all vehicles must be equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems. After the massive Firestone recall in the 1990s, the US Congress mandated the use TPMS on passenger vehicles to help warn drivers of underinflated tires. In addition to this article I must add that our rubber has become a partner with the shiny chrome that distinguishes our own personal style and flare. Rather it be with white walls, yellow pinstripes, or bold lettering on our side walls, our rim choice is just as important. See ya next month!!! john@dixiepress.com

Our first destination on this trip to Louisville Ky. was not the NSRA street rod nationals. We decided to visit the recreation of Noah's Ark in Williamstown Ky. If you have not visited this, you must add it to your places to go and things to see. To say this was an awe inspiring place would be an understatement. Very well done, very well kept, and it is air conditioned and for winter heated. My route decision to the Ark from Louisville was not really a good choice however, we took a little hwy through the country side that was very twisty and quite hilly and a few times a little rough. What should have taken an hour or so turned in to closer to three. And at times the Queen and I thought we were hearing the tune from Deliverance, Dueling Banjo's. Very scenic if you were not driving, the Queen constantly said to look at this or that while my main focus was surviving the constant twisting and turning and keeping us right side up and out of the ravines. Next up the Kentucky Fair and Expo center, I made the rounds inside to some vendors that were on my list of places to go, and purchase a few things for the Big Truck Project. This event is huge and might I suggest if you have never been, go and I promise you will not be disappointed. Bring some good shoes and be ready to walk. Everything you need to build a hotrod or well equipped muscle car can be found inside. And if your choice is original there is a very large swap meet outside that can generally meet that need. We also caught up with some friends from Bay St. Louis, Alabama, and Missouri, and to say we were all having a large time would be an understatement. The next morning we travelled down town to the Louisville Slugger factory. That place is also quite impressive and its history is also a very interesting story. Another must see and a place to go. Be careful as you navigate the streets, there were lots of road repairs going on and many one way streets. Kind of tough when you are not sure where places are down town and how to get there. But again a very interesting town with some beautiful sights and buildings and many more places to see. After the bat factory tour it was back to the fair grounds.

SEPTEMBER 2018
This time we headed outside to see a small portion of the participants cars, again too many to see, and too many to admire. Too much for this small brain to take in and far too many to capture on film, you just can't see them all up close. We headed back inside to check out the builders show case of cars on display and I must say there are some exceptionally, skilled, talented and creative folks out there, and the level of execution of these builds keeps increasing. Each evening many people line the entrance and the surrounding streets to watch the procession of cars leaving the fair grounds. That too was quite impressive, and at times tons of fun, especially when folks' front brakes locked up and the back wheels would spin generating smoke in their attempt to dislodge the brakes.
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
We were in or around Louisville a total of four days and I might add it was not enough time to see or do everything we set out to see. Missed a lot happenings in and around the fairgrounds, and other destinations I had planned, oh well there is always next year, I am registered for the 50th edition of this happening, and will be there maybe for a week, if it is at all possible. What was it a famous author said, Best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go awry. We definitely lived up to that quote. Later from the recovering travelers, Gizmo

Mr. Meyer's '62 Mercury It was a late September day in 2003 that I purchased a 1962 Mercury Monterey 4-dr sedan from a salvage auction in PA. It had a hard hit to the front and was ear-marked as a parts car for my '62 Mercury convertible which was finished but you never know when/if you can find parts for these old cars when/if you need them. There weren't many of these produced and there's fewer out there now. I tend to snag them up...just in case. Once I got it home and started looking it over with a fine tooth comb I found it to be a very solid, original which appeared to have been garage kept. My step-son who shares my love for classic cars was sure it could be saved. "Let's fix it he says" and reminds me that we have a rusty parts car out back. I let him know that there just isn't enough time since we were to leave for Cruisin' the Coast in 3 days!!! We got busy on her just the same just to see what we could accomplish in the couple days we had left in the People's Republic of Maryland. Five days later, we arrive in Gulfport. The Mercury drove the 1100 miles just fine. It was a sight to see.....a '62 Mercury 4-door being followed by a '62 Mercury convertible heading down the supper slab heading for the Gulf Coast. We found papers in the car from the original owner so we decided to contact him to let him know his Mercury was fixed and on vacation at CTC. Mr. Myers loved his car and was NOT the one who was in the accident that caused it to be at a salvage action. He had been placed in a nursing home and his car was sold to a drunk who wrecked it two weeks after his got it. He was so very happy to hear it was running down the road again. We kept in contact with Mr. Meyers for the next 8 or so years. Photos and history were exchanged. Hearing about his old Merc kept him going. When he lost his vision, the nurses would read him our letters telling him what adventures his old car was up to. Some of the modifications we made to his old car was something he had never imagined. Finally there came a day when we were getting NO responses from our letters or photos. After a few more letters of concern for Mr. Myers and one to the nursing staff we got a surprise letter from Mr. Myers Jr. thanking us for keeping his father going for the last few years of his life. The photos we had sent were all over his room when he passed and he would have the nurses read the letters over and over again. Every time one of the letters or a photo was explained to him, he'd have a huge smile on his face. Over the years we have turned it into a flame thrower which competes (even won a couple times) at ECC. My step-son, Jason, has taken over the car and is having a blast getting the flames just so. If you'd like to see the car it can be seen in the 2017 program book doing what it does best. If don't have one, you can find it in the pictures on the CTC webpage in the past photos. If you have or get a classic car, you may wish to research it and send the past owners a little note. These cars aren't just cars....they are great memories. You may find it beyond your wildest dreams. Skip M.

I started this Month at Diamondhead for the True Value Hardware 3rd Fri cruise-in. The next evening I headed over to Pass Christian harbor for the 3rd Sat. run. The following weekend we made the ride up to Flint Creek Water Park for the Red Creek Classics Appreciation day picnic. This one is always a fun day visiting with everyone and relaxing under the trees. That night I made the Long Beach Harbor 4th Sat cruise-in. Always a good little breeze blowing at this one. Next up we ran over to Jeff Davis Ave 1st Fri. cruise-in. Live music and lots of places to eat at this one. On Saturday we headed to Edgewater Mall Biloxi for the Coast Cruizers 1st Saturday Cruise-in. Had a full parking lot for this cruise-in. My next stop was Dairy Queen of Slidell for their 2nd Fri cruise-in. This is another fun little run. Our last stop was the Misfits Street Krewzers 2nd Sat cruise-in. Good music several great places to eat and shopping for the ladies. I also made it to the Silver Slipper Casino weekly car bike night several times this month. Also here are a few pictures of keeping the youngsters involved.

By: Joyce Lachaussee And they just kept rolling in for the Hardee's Breakfast Cruise-in. There were 52 vehicles this month, with everything from a 2018 Camero priced at $70,000(!) to Rat Rods; something for everyone. As you can see it was a great time for all - so many cars and trucks to see, a Swap Meet and a visit to a new restoration shop (DY Performance) located just off Hwy. 63 north of Lucedale.
William Steel and Artis Ford traveled from Smith County to attend the Cruise-in. William brought this SS 396 Chevelle which he purchased new in 1966. A restoration has been done on this vehicle in '95 and it looks sharp plus it's totally original. His traveling companion, Artis, brought this 1974 Volkswagen truck which sports a 2.0 EF1 liter engine with a total of 67 HP. We were happy to see these car buffs travel so far in these original vehicles. Please come again.
Bob Glascox brought this 1952 Chevy Styleline Deluxe that has cold air, disc brakes and a 235 engine. Bob is doing a favor for the owner, his friend Jerry Tanner, who is ill, by trying to sell this beauty. Thanks Bob for showing the car and good luck on the sell.
This '58 Chevy was restored by owner Gary Petty. In addition to the '58, Gary has a fine 1954 Chevy Truck. He wants to sell this '58, which should be a reminder to him of his High School days. It would be hard for me to part with this iconic classic.

Don't forget the Swap Meet next month. Hardee's Breakfast begins around 7:30 til so please come join us. SWAP MEET HELD ON THE BACK PARKING LOT OF HARDEE'S IN LUCEDALE. ONLY CAR ITEMS ALLOWED
This 1976 GTX Plymouth is owned by Gavin Churchwell and he has had it since 1988. It has a 440 Magnum and auto transmission. Gavin has a '56 and a '57 Chevy in the restoration process. Once upon a time he had a "cherry" 1951 Ford truck but came home one day to find his wife, Jeannie, had traded it for a Baby Grand piano and Gavin has been singing the blues ever since!
We want to give a big “Thank You to Tim and Joy Colmerauer of DY Performance Shop in Lucedale for hosting the "breakfast gang" with a tour of their new shop. As you can see from the photos, this is a top notch shop. Tim has two employees to help with the restoration while Joy has a nice large photography studio where she does all types of photography-senior portraits, baby pictures, weddings, etc. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the tour and their hospitality. Look for more info on events that may include DY Performance in the future.

The countdown to Cruisin The Coast has begun, we are less than one month away from the start. CTC this year, because of the way the calendar falls, starts on Sunday September 30. The official Cruisin The Coast Kickoff is View The Cruise in downtown Gulfport. If you have never been to this event, it's truly special and does a great job at getting folks in the mood for Cruisin The Coast. If you have never been to the View The Cruise event, get there early for a good parking place. When I arrive at 4 am to set up Terry Mason's Hot Rod Show, the best spaces have already been claimed, it gets earlier and earlier each year. It's held in the downtown area, so the tall buildings offer some shade which is nice. Expect a couple thousand classic cars, last year's spectator crowd were estimated at over 20,000 people. It's free to attend this event; you don't even need a classic car. Everyone is welcome! Great cars, great music, a Mega 50/50, door prizes, a good selection of restaurants and bars. Live music will be playing on 3 stages around the downtown area. At least three bars will also feature live bands. We'll start playing the oldies at 8 am. Make sure you're at the Hot Rod Show trailer on Hwy 49 across from the Half Shell Oyster House at 10 am for our annual recognition of all Veterans, a prayer for cruisers and our week of cruising and our National Anthem to kickoff CTC! Auto Zone will be providing thousands of dollars in door prizes. Special thanks to this year's View The Cruise sponsors, Auto Zone, Dad's Super Pawn, Performance Tire and Wheel, William Smith Paint and Body, Bud McQueen's National Muffler, Southern Camper Sales and Headliners Plus. Gulfport Main Street does an incredible job with this event, as does the City of Gulfport. Monday October 1, is the parade in Long Beach, always fun and folks pack the parade route to see the cars. The parade ends up at the harbor and the "Tip Tops" out of Mobile, AL hit the stage at 6 pm. I always look forward to seeing this band; they put on one heck of a show. Bring your lawn chairs and I always bring a small cooler. By their second set the crowd will be huge to see this group. Just the start of a great week! The 8th annual Red Creek Classic Car Appreciation Picnic Show at Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins, MS was Saturday July 28. The NSRA and several car clubs helped to make this show one of the areas best. Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins, MS is a great place anyway; the park is comprised of 1900 total acres and features a 650-acre lake with 13 miles of shoreline stocked with bass, bream, crappie and catfish offering excellent fishing 24-hours a day. The lake is also a favorite for boating, water skiing and swimming. Aluminum boat rentals are available. A water park, Splash of Fun, is open on the property of Flint Creek. All these features also make Flint Creek a wonderful place for a car show. The park really supports the show and you see big smiles on all their faces as we drive in. The Appreciation Day Picnic is a family affair, coolers and popups are always welcome.

This year Charlie Farmer said the car count was 315 classic cars. Cruisers came from Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Florida and Mississippi. This is a free show and the Red Creek Classic Car Club feeds everyone. This year the club cooked 400 hamburgers, 300 hotdogs, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, potato chips, cakes, pies, peach cobbler, tea, soft drinks and so much more. There was so much food. Everyone lined up out the door and around the building. It's amazing how quick the Red Creek Classics can get hundreds of people fed. After lunch you had to find a good shade tree for a nap with a full stomach. Great door prizes from Auto Zone and the 50/50 was $1,200 and won by a little lady from Pearl River, Louisiana who purchased one ticket. The Red Creek Classic Car Club has 32 members; about 20 members worked the event along with other car clubs jumping in to lend their support. The food was served in an air conditioned building in the picnic area of the park and dining tables were set up under a big tent. Chicken Willie, Jerry Cuevas and Donna Holland manned the NSRA booth where you could check in, join or re-new your NSRA membership and get your car safety inspected. Charlie Farmer wanted to be sure and thank everyone that brought food. Next year's car show dates are Friday July 19 and Saturday July 20, a cruise-in on that Friday night. Flint Creek Water Park is so much fun anyway, but add in all the classic cars, the classic car folks and food and it's a show I always look forward to, hats off to the club and all their volunteers that pull off this show each and every year! Enjoy the photos I took from the show. Cruisin The Coast is coming fast, very fast! The countdown has begun…are you ready? Is your Hot Rod ready? Cruisin’ The Coast® Seeks ‘Cruisin’ Krewe’ Volunteers Biloxi, MS July 30, 2018 –
Cruisin' The Coast® (CTC) is looking for fun-loving Coastians who want to be a part of America's Largest Block Party. The success and growth of Cruisin' The Coast® has made it necessary to seek volunteers from the local community to help with the annual event. The volunteers will be known as the "Cruisin' Krewe" and they will assist the staff and current volunteers with many tasks before, during and after the event. Cruisin' The Coast® hosted its first event in 1996, with 374 vehicles from surrounding states. Last year, 8,308 vehicles registered from 40 states, Canada, Puerto Rico and Germany. Cruisin' The Coast® is a non-profit 501(c)6 organization. "For two decades, our 'host car clubs' have provided all the yellow-shirted volunteers our cruisers have come to know and depend on," said CTC Executive Director Woody Bailey. A dozen local clubs have provided approximately 700 volunteers annually, making CTC known for its friendliness and hospitality in the past few years. We've added events, stamping venues and evening activities. Now we find ourselves needing more help," explained Bailey. Cruisin' Krewe volunteers will assist with traffic control, hospitality, vehicle registration and more. "Cruisin' Krewe volunteers are needed for almost every event and location we have," said Bailey. "Our biggest need is for Krewe members to help direct traffic inside our various venues and at a select few of our events," said Bailey. "Of course, hospitality and helpfulness are a major part of all that we do and are known for," he continued. CTC volunteers must be at least 18 years old and commit to working at least 8 hours, which is normally 2 or more 4-hour shifts. Most Cruisin' Krewe opportunities will require volunteers to stand for most of your volunteer shift; most volunteers will work outside. Some opportunities require specialized computer skills. "Being a Cruisin' Krewe member will require some work, but it will give you a fun, up close look at the cars and trucks, our cruisers and the event itself," said Bailey. If you'd like to be a Cruisin' Krewe member, visit www.cruisinthecoast.com and click on the "Volunteer" tab for guidelines, an application and available opportunities. You can also call the CTC office at 228-385-3847 with questions.
The deadline for applications is Sept. 15.

Another Love Story Here is a wonderful true story about a loving couple and a car. I am humbled to be able to present this to you. ... The date was December 11, 1961. This was just 5 days before Dick and Lois Wright’s first wedding anniversary and Dick joined the U.S. Air Force. He didn’t know what was ahead, and neither did Lois. This was truly a tough time for a newlywed couple. Dick took off for basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. The beginning of 1964, Dick was overseas at Karamursel Air Station in Turkey, working as a Morse Code Intercept Operator. He was listening to and copying radio transmissions from Russia, Romania, and Bulgaria. He had access to some current magazines and saw a black and white picture of a 1965 Mustang coupe. He was so impressed with this car, Dick told his roommates he intended to own one someday. All good and exciting things come to an end and in May of 1964, the tour of duty in Turkey ended, and Dick returned to Indiana for a 30 day leave, and was then reassigned to Barksdale AFB in Bossier City, Louisiana. He was destined to become a computer programmer. It was while stationed in Bossier City that Dick found the Mustang of his dreams at a Ford dealership in Shreveport. He traded in a 1963 Ford Falcon to get a “Silver Blue” 1966 Mustang convertible with a white top, and a 289 V-8 engine. Was this the end of the story? No. Discharged from the Air Force, Dick and Lois headed back to Indiana in the new Mustang with all their worldly possessions tagging along behind in a small U -Haul trailer. Fortunately Dick had enough forethought to buy a Mustang with a trailer hitch direct from the dealer. It is rare to find one today with Ford stamped into the hitch. When they returned to Indiana, Dick took a job as a Computer Programmer and System Analyst at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, so when the new Mustangs made their appearance in the fall, Dick thought he needed the newer model. In hindsight, there were better choices he could have made. The new Mustang came equipped with Firestone’s new Wide Oval tires and the car he bought had no power steering. Lois could not even park it, the steering was so heavy. Well, December 10, 1967, Lois presented the family with daughter Sarah. Now the Mustang was not appropriate for all the baby stuff, so in 1968 it was traded for a Ford Fairlane family car. Next the Wright family grew with Matthew in August of 1970, and Jennifer in November 1973. Life, work, and children growing up, made life enough of an adventure without any additions. In December of 1993, Dick retired from Lilly and started thinking about finding another 1966 Mustang to replace the one he loved so much. It was not until youngest daughter graduated from college in 2000, that Dick actually began his hunt for the Mustang. After a 19 month search, a Mustang with the correct paint code was located in Frankfort, Indiana, and the Silver Blue Mustang was ready to be restored. After 33 years without a Mustang, Dick’s dream was about to come true.
Twelve years of restoration work followed. The floorpans were replaced, along with the convertible top and window, interior, exhaust, suspension, and drive train. Of course a repaint in the original color sets things off perfectly. It took a lot of work to bring the car up to the quality you see in these photos. This car has been awarded 95 trophies, including “Best Of Show”, and the “Adjutant General’s Pick” at an Indiana National Guard show at the “World War Memorial” in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. I thank Dick and Lois Wright for the privilege of writing this article. This brings a smile to my face every time I see this Silver Blue Mustang, which is at least once a week in the summer. This car gets driven and enjoyed. Thank you both for your devotion to your car and this hobby we all enjoy. Oh, by the way, it is for sale if anyone wants a truly great classic.

On Saturday, June 16, 2018, Custom Cruisers Car Club held the 16th Annual Back to the Beach Car Show at Lake Town in Kenner, LA. With Lake Pontchartrain and the Treasure Chest Casino paddle wheeler in the background, 275 registered vehicles dared several heavy rain storms to participate. The first Back to the Beach Car Show had 30 cars and was held on the lakefront at Franklin Avenue in New Orleans. It stayed at that location until Hurricane Katrina blew through the city. Kenner stepped up and offered a location for the show and it was held there for 5 years. Last year, the show drew more than 300 cars when it returned to New Orleans near the New Canal Basin Lighthouse. This year, the show was back in Kenner and there are no plans to move it again. All proceeds from the show were split between the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation’s Save our Lake efforts and the Kenner Police Department. A surprising number of entrants stayed through the first very heavy rain and saw beautiful blue skies on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, another heavy rain came through again before the awards presentation but, again, many people stayed. This is a very popular event that gives out three Best in Show and many other awards. Cars of every kind lined up in Lake Town – antiques, classics, rat rods, muscle cars, custom cars, and motorcycles of various kinds. The Corvette Club, because they were so well represented, even had an entire section of the parking area all to themselves. Mother Nature may have had fun with the weather for this year’s event, but the participants definitely had lots of fun of their own. If you haven’t come Back to the Beach, make a point not to miss the next one.

The Brad Sapia Band
WeGo Cruzin’ was at it again on Friday, July 6, 2018. For the second time, a cruise-in was held in conjunction with the Summer Concert Series at the Farmers & Fisheries Market in Westwego, LA. Cruisers enjoyed a nice summer evening listening to the great music of the Brad Sapia Band. The Gulf Coast MotorSports Pit Stop served as cruise central. This event started small but it is growing. It is one of only a few cruise-ins on the Westbank of the Mississippi River in the Greater New Orleans area, so it is giving locals a place to gather with their awesome vehicles and have a good time. There was a good mix including classics, customs, gassers, lo-riders, hot rods, rat rods and motorcycles of various sizes and styles. The location has a great black-topped parking lot that is well lit thanks to light towers courtesy of the Westwego Police Department. The band, food and music add to a really nice event and make it family-friendly. September 7th with the Aaron Foret Band; and October 12th with the Brad Sapia Band. WeGo Cruzin’. Do you?

This month’s Texoma Cars and Coffee was a celebration of more than just cars. In 2017, Main Street Motors and CJ’s Coffee Café united to host the first Texoma Cars and Coffee event. While there are similar events in Plano and Dallas, this was the first of its kind event for Denison. In May of 2018, Denison’s Main Street named Texoma Cars and Coffee the Best New Event, 2017. “We want to thank everybody from the bottom of Cindy and my’s heart. The City of Denison awarded us the Best Event of last year…We appreciate that from them for recognizing this,” said Jay Connelly who, along with his wife, Cindy, own Main Street Motors in downtown Denison, Texas, as he showed the award to the crowd. “Ya’ll are what make it happen,” said Cindy of the event’s attendees. “That’s right,” said Jay. “Couldn’t do it without you.” At Texoma Cars and Coffee, you can walk Main Street with a fine cup of joe while taking in some beautiful cars, but meet members of other car clubs, local business owners, collectors, while enjoying the company of other members of the community - something which can sometimes be lost in the day-to-day rush. This month, regular participant Aimee Friese baked over 300 mini-muffins to serve and Dee and John Murray of CERMA provided items for the giveaway. “So, Dee and John own a company called CERMA. It’s a treatment for engines…I’ll let her tell you all about it,” said Jay. Did you know that CERMA, the manufacturer of CERMA STM-3, CERMA Motor Oils and Fluids, and CERMA engine treatments was located in Denison, Texas? I had no idea until Dee mentioned they had been in Denison for almost 25 years. “CERMA STM-3 cleans up your engine, increases horsepower and torque, and just makes your engine last longer. And then we have a fuel treatment that goes in there that raises the octane and acts like a fuel stabilizer. We have motor oils, gear oils, transmission fluids, we have a little bit of everything. Greases, all that 24

kind of stuff and we brought some stuff down for you guys to try out, said Dee. With the increasing numbers of participants has come a wide variety of makes and models, and even more opportunities to meet interesting members of the community. When the sidewalk is abuzz with teenagers showing off their first ride to farmers who have driven the same truck for 40 years, talking with and learning from one another, Texoma Cars and Coffee becomes more than just a rainbow cornucopia of cars lining Main Street to be

Intergalactic Gals By Candy Cocktail Sci-fi is a popular and ever present genre of film, comics and pop culture in general. I have been a sci-fi fan since my childhood, growing up watching movies like Star Wars with my grandfather. As I got more involved with pinup modeling, some of my favorite pinup artwork and photos are of course, sci-fi themed! Intergalactic gals from Princess Leia to Barbarella have staked a claim in modern pop culture. Since the thrill of space began, people have imagined in their own way what our future holds. The first recognized sci-fi film is Le Voyage Dans la Lune, which was shown in 1902 and included a bevy of beauties: the chorus girls of the Folies Bergères. Metropolis is a 1927 German science-fiction drama considered to be one of the best films of all time. The silent film is regarded as a pioneering work of the science-fiction genre, set in a futuristic urban dystopia featuring an attractive robot named Maria and a range of elaborate special effects and set designs of the futuristic cityscape that were revolutionary at the time. Musicians from Madonna to Lady Gaga have paid homage to the cult classic that changed our view of the future. The film Metropolis changed the view of the future while films like 1985 gave us an unsettling look at the dark side of what the future could hold. Georges Méliès made over 500 films and is considered the pioneer of sci-fi films.
Among a long list of sci-fi greats from the 1950s through the 70s, is another alien pinup classic, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. An abused socialite grows to giant size after an encounter with an enormous alien in his spacecraft causes her to grow into a giant who then goes after her cheating husband with revenge on her mind. Inspired by 1950s science fiction films about size-changing humans, the 1958 film channeled the many remarkable sci-fi films that came before. While a sequel was never made, the film subsequently spawned more films inspired by the original, including Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman starring Daryl Hannah in 1993, Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold in 1995 and Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader, a 3D movie in 2012. The 1960s showed the world the space race and the first ever visit to another world, thus media indulged humanity's imagination of what space would be like. TV shows like Star Trek with its legendary ladies, Doctor Who and Lost in Space brought extraterrestrials and outer space into viewers' living rooms. The American science fiction TV series Lost in Space aired from 1965-1968 and led to a film and two reboots of the television show about the pioneering family of space colonists struggling in the new environment of space, one of which just premiered on Netflix. Danger, Will Robinson!

The scifibabes website extensively lists the films that reflect space enthusiasm with sci-fi classics like Barbarella, Stanley Kubrick's epic 2001: A Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes. 1968's Barbarella remains one of the most iconic sci-fi films of the 1960s with Jane Fonda remaining the queen of the 60s sci-fi babes. Jane Fonda plays Barbarella, an outer space agent who travels to another galaxy in search of a missing inventor in the year 40,000. The film's missing scientist character Durand Durand inspired the band name of 80s pop stars Duran Duran (who altered the spelling slightly). Based on a comic book character, Barbarella revolutionized space age fashion. Unorthodox materials like metal and leather were used for the Queen of the Galaxy's costumes that influenced designers like Pierre Cardin who later went on to design spacesuits for NASA. The cult classic still inspires cosplayers around the world.
Atomic pinup girls resulted from as one would guess, the atomic bomb, specifically the testing of the bomb. The 1950s created the subculture known as the atomic era, with its distinct design of homes, furniture, decor, the bikini and even its own pinup girls. The United States Military began testing nuclear weapons in the Nevada desert in 1955 to establish military tactics and ensure strategic delivery. President Truman authorized a 680-square mile section of the Nellis Air Force Gunnery and Bombing Range for nuclear bomb testing. The Apple-2 shot on 5 May 1955 was intended to test various building construction types in a nuclear blast. An assortment of buildings, including residential houses and electrical substations , were constructed at the site nicknamed "Survival Town" so the bomb could be tested in a real world environment. Wikipedia described how the buildings at the nuclear test site were populated with mannequins, and stocked with different types of canned and packaged foods. Not all of the buildings were destroyed in the blast, and some of them still stand at Area 1 , Nevada Test Site. A short film about the blast, referred to as "Operation Cue", was distributed by the Federal Civil Defense Administration .
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
During the many delays in testing, personnel on the project went into Vegas and named Linda Lawson as “Miss-Cue” wearing an A-Bomb crown with a mushroom cloud to illustrate another misfiring of the Operation Cue Bomb on May 1, 1955. In 1957, showgirl Lee Merlin was named Miss Atomic Bomb in a cotton mushroom cloud bathing suit, making her the last “atomic pinup girl” as stated by the Vintage Space channel on YouTube.
As for the 90s, that decade just like it's predecessors brought us iconic characters like Agent Scully from the X-Files and a series of successful alien films like post apocalyptic Independence Day, Men In Black and one of my personal favorites, a kitschy alien film for the modern age that played homage to vintage sci-fi, Mars Attacks. The 1996 film Mars Attacks! directed by Tim Burton is a unique comic sci-fi, horror film combination based on the science fictionthemed cult trading card series Mars Attacks. From aliens to flying cars, sci-fi babes are a unique twist on the classic retro pinup. Sci-fi films and artwork feature lunar ladies like in Miss Fluff’s artwork. These sci-fi babes even have a glass space helmet for their pet dog, channeling the inspiration for the photo from the Pinups for Pitbulls calendar. The galactic glamour of outer space is just as cool as jet pack-propelled pinups, so a combination is quite literally the stuff of dreams. Alien pinup girls inspired by vintage sci-fi posters, riding around in a rocket instead of a hot rod. Even Vargas girls have had an alien makeover in our society with a sweet spot for sci-fi. Out of this world space babes have graced music videos and magazine covers. These atomic pinups have been inspiring for photographers and artists who have put their own unique spin on out of this world classics. Atomic pinups even make psychedelic tattoos.
Perhaps winning the spot for the toughest, most alien-butt kicking space gal of them all, Ellen Ripley in Alien, and all of the succeeding films of the Alien franchise, portrayed by the one and only Sigourney Weaver. Ridley Scott took an uncommon approach in 1979 when he cast a female lead in an

action film, yet most would agree the result is perfection. Alas, at the top of any list would be the incomparable queen of all sci-fi ladies, Princess Leia. Not your average bikini-wearing damsel in distress, the Star Wars princess is fearless and even rescues her leading man.

By: Donna “Sugar Bug” White If you ever get the chance to meet this man in person, do so. He is one of the kindest, gentlest people you will ever encounter. Till the green light comes on. Once in a while, you meet someone that has a big impact on your life. Even rarer is meeting someone who makes an impact on every person they meet. That person is Mr. Aubrey Padgett. Mr. Aubrey was born on April 16, 1935 in Conecuh County, Alabama and was raised in the same community. At 83 years young, he is very active in his community (he is the Fire Chief) as well as racing. I was lucky enough to sit down with him and listen to him talk. As we sat down in his shop, surrounded by race cars as the rain hit the tin roof of the garage, I knew I was about to travel back in time…..to a place that was very special to him. As he began to speak, he eyes lit up. He was no longer 83….he transformed into a young man in his early 20’s, who was in love with his wife, raising his young children, and beginning to live a dream that most of us could only wish.
In 1949, when he was only 14, Mr. Aubrey found a 1928 Model A that he wanted. For a year, he tried to convince the man to sell it. Finally, he convinced him to let him buy it for $50.00. He took $25.00 he had earned of his own money and borrowed $25.00 from his father. Being only 15 at the time, he drove the car for a year without a driver’s license. Mr. Aubrey met the love of his life, Mary Lou, when he was 20 and she was 17. They were married in 1955. She had a love of racing much as he did, and raced the Powder Puff races in their 1957 Chevy, which they also used as a family car. Having never lost a race, she also was a woman of determination. She even raced one race while she was 9 months pregnant, and had their daughter, Kaye at 10:00 the next morning. After about five years, she stopped racing, but she and the kids still went to the track with him. When he was speaking about his wife, his voice would become very soft, and there was a sparkle in his eyes. (At one point later on in the morning, after sitting quietly for a minute after talking about racing stories, out of the blue he looked at me and said, “I don’t know a thing I would change about married life. I would do it all over again.”) Mr. Aubrey’s love of a lifetime passed away a year and a half ago, and is still missed every day by her family and friends. May she always rest in peace. In 1956, he bought a 3-speed, 1950 Chevy Coupe at a service station in Chicago, IL, which he used as a family car for several years. He eventually handed his young sons a screwdriver and a pair of pliers and told them to take everything they could off of the car. Mr. Aubrey’s desire
to have a “Big Iron” had just begun. In the last part of 1958 when the car was completed, he began racing the car as “Big Iron #44”. The name came from the Marty Robbins’ song, and the 44 from the gun in the song. Several years later, NHRA required three numbers instead of two, so he added a fourth 4 to his number. At the time, the winning money was usually around $50.00 for first place. He also won so many trophies that he eventually had to take an extra $5 in winning money instead of the trophy. During this time, a person stood at the end of the track and held an arm up to indicate who won the race. Later on, they would put two people at the end of the track, and sometimes there were differences of opinions between the two as to who won the race. He said that now electronics (both in the car and on the track) make racing much more precise. He eventually sold the first “Big Iron”. In 1989, Mr. Aubrey bought the 2nd “Big Iron”. However, in 2005, the car was destroyed in a barn fire. The fire was so hot, the tires, wheels, and even most of the engine melted. The only thing that was saved on the car was the back bumper, which he has on his current “Big Iron”, which is a 6-

second car and runs with the Southern Outlaw Gassers. He bought it right after the barn fire, and rebuilt the car in ten months. It has a small block Chevy engine, 421 with aluminum heads, Hilborn fuel injection, 9” Ford rear end, ladder bars extension, and runs on alcohol. The car has a screwdriver mounted by the driver’s door. He said when he got the first “Big Iron”, the door was in such bad shape that the lock would come loose from the door and it would open about halfway down the track. He took a screwdriver and used it to hold the door closed while he raced. Eventually, he was able to get the door fixed, but his fans missed the screwdriver. He mounted it on the car, and has kept one mounted since then on all three of the “Big Irons”. Although he said he looked up to Warren Johnson through the years, Mr. Aubrey’s favorite racing story (and most proud win) was when he ran against J.C. Sizemore for the best two out of three passes in Andalusia, AL in 1966. Mr. Aubrey beat him the first two passes and won the race. About a month later, Mr. Sizemore came back for a re-match with a bigger engine and beat him. Around the same time, Mr. Aubrey raced Joe "Big Joe" Teuton Jr. for a win as well. He said that the two people he would love to race against again would be Bill Ziel and Jessie Holmes (I’m foreseeing some grudge runs coming up real soon!). However, he said his favorite person to race is his son, Allen Padgett (“He’d be the FIRST person on the list I’d want to outrun”). Over the years, they have taken both first and second place as track champions and have had to race each other for the top spot. But, he said Allen has won more of their races against each other than he has. From 1962-1965, Mr. Aubrey was the AL, MS, and FL state champion, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003, and has set ET records twice in Andalusia. He said his biggest obstacle over the years in racing was balancing family, work, and racing. Because of the time he would have to spend away from his family, he did not race professionally (but stated he would love to now). He worked side jobs as a mechanic in his earlier years on his carport in order to make extra money for racing as well as working full time as a mechanic. He has had only one (thankfully) racing accident in the many years he has been racing, which happened in 2009 at Emerald Coast in Hold, FL on New Year’s Day. There was a bad tire on the car, and he hit the guardrail. Fortunately, he was fine and the car had minor damage that he was able to easily get fixed. Although I have summarized a lot of our conversation, there is some of the conversation that is best to keep in his own words:
What is your advice to younger generations of racers? “Start off small, make mistakes, and correct them. Start from the ground up, learn everything about the car, be hands-on with what you have, and be prepared when you get to the track. Don’t depend on everyone else to do it.” Having been married for so long, what is your advice on keeping a marriage together? “Understand each other. When you have a problem, talk it out or don’t say anything. Don’t stand there and argue and yell. You can’t settle anything doing that. “ What advice would you give anyone who is reading this? “Just be yourself, whatever you are. Don’t try to ‘put on’ and be someone you’re not. Stay busy. Stay active. Do everything you can possibly do to have fun.”

What is something that others don’t know about you that you would like for them to know? “Although I don’t smoke now, I did smoke Lucky Strikes in my younger years.” Also, in 1953 when he was a teenager in high school, he wrote a thesis on what he wanted his life to be. Several years ago, it was found in a library book by a student and was returned to him. He had written in the thesis that he wanted to be a mechanic, run a garage, get married, and have several kids. He told me that after reading that, he was very happy to look back on his life and know that he did what he set out to do. Will you race the rest of your life? “I’m gonna race until I don’t feel safe doing it anymore” What do you want to be when you grow up? “It’d suit me fine to keep doing exactly what I’m doing. I get to play with fire trucks, I get to play with race cars, Kaye (his daughter) still calls me when she needs advice or needs something worked on so I get to go do that, people still call me to go work on motors. I’d do another 50 years just doing what I’m doing now. That’s not very far off, now is it?” In summary, if you are ever around Mr. Aubrey, go up and say hello. He is one of the easiest people to speak to, very down-to-earth, and is very welcoming. He has many racing stories and a lot of life advice, and he freely shares both if asked, and he enjoys it! He also has the ability to change your outlook on life in an instant. He has a smile and laugh that you will never forget.
Mr. Aubrey, you are loved by your family and friends, loved by the race world, and loved by me. You are a treasure, and will always be held in that regard. Your hugs have a way of reaching into someone’s heart and wiping away the smudges. Your gentle way of speaking will forever have echoes. Thank you so much for being a part of our lives and granting us a place to be in yours. And thank you for allowing me to be your BUG. – Sugar Bug

Deep Thoughts Male logic... flawless This a conversation between a man and his wife. Please note that she asks five or six questions which he answered quite simply, but then she is speechless after answering only one question. l bet this happens more often than not to most husbands out there: Woman: Do you drink beer? Man: Yes Woman: How many beers a day? Man: Usually about three Woman: How much do you pay per beer? Man: $5.00 which includes a tip (this is where it gets scary!) Woman: And how long have you been drinking? Man: About 20 years, I suppose Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have three beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450. In one year, it would be approximately $5400 correct? Man: Correct Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000 correct? Man: Correct Woman: Do you know that if you didn't drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought an airplane? Man: Do you drink beer? Woman: No. Man: Where is your airplane?

After thinking of the many reasons the used auto parts business isn’t thriving like it once was I’ve come to the realization that most millennial’s don’t understand the concept of a salvage yard or even realize we exist. The internet and the instant gratification of typing into Google what you’re looking for and pressing the buy now button on Amazon or whatever other sites they’re buying that cheap Chinese garbage for whatever ridiculously cheap price (because it cost pennies to make) is destroying the used auto parts business and the auto salvage industry. If only people would realize that most OEM parts are more reliable, go through rigorous safety tests, made to last, and you’re using a recycled part so you’re helping the environment and keeping the little guy in business! Stop giving your money to Amazon or whatever other giant multimillion dollar corporations you’re supporting and stop buying that cheap Chinese junk because you’re killing the little guy and hurting the auto salvage industry and only making the Chinese richer. Tell someone about used auto parts and the salvage yards - not Amazon!

Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them… I’m in Memphis, TN and driving the #5 car for Joe Lucy and Danny Burk is driving the 4 car for Joe. We had just finished running the West Memphis dirt 3/8 mile speedway when this darling’ child invites me out to her Daddy’s home on the river to go to a swimming party on Sunday. (this is Saturday night after the races) they lived about 40 miles from the track. Her dad built some “real good” racing engines. Anyway, I take her home with me that night after the races, and she is waiting in the front room for me to shower, and change. When I come out, with a towel only, wrapped around my waist, I find her in my bed, naked and smiling! There is nothing like being in your 20’s and both being naked in bed! True? We got up around 5:30am, dressed and headed down town for breakfast. As we are eating, she leans back in the booth beside me (she had 36’s with a “D” cup) and says “Daddys building a brand new race car and I get to pick the driver”. I gave her my most serious look, and gave her a kiss, with a smile I said “can’t do it Darlin’, we are headed for California and the West Coast as soon as the weather gets bad here! “Well” she said, “Win one like last night in bed, and lose one of the best driver I wanted most.” now that’s a real racer woman. Joe Lucy was a real race car owner, he wanted to go big time, and had the money to make it happen. So, we start for Calif. That Monday. Joe had a 1949 Lincoln 2 door, with a “Burbank” midget trailer that would haul two midgets, dual (inline) tires on each side, 2 tire posts, tool locker on the front and two separate safety chains! (I wish I had a photo of it but “Katrina” would have gotten it anyway) Danny Burke was married with two kids, he couldn’t go, so Joe lined up “Wild Willie Wildhaber” to be the 2nd driver.
goggles, with extra lenses on the straps over the originals, and we would pull them when they got muddy! (2 extra “cover lens” they were called) for 6 or 7 laps “heat” races. 6 or 8 for the “main” (or semi if you missed the main).
The photo you see is 1956, later model helmet, and leather face mask, and rubber mouth pieces same as boxers used. My older brother by 3 years got out and went to work for “Ma Bell” (Pacific Telephone Co.) and was making $1.35 an hour. (minimum wage was .90 an hour) if he had a good week he would put in 48 to 50 hours. Regular pay was $60.00 a week plus overtime. (no extra pay for overtime) still $1.35 an hour! So, there I am getting $25 for fast time, when it was a good track (good meaning honest and paid the money) 2nd quick (qualifying) was $15.00. tracks who raced 2 or 3 nights a week! The average main was 30 laps, heat races were 6 or 8 laps, so, main paid $80.00 to $130.00 depending on the track size and city that drew the crowds. Keep it between the fences, Larry Dunham 228-671-6216 usaclarry@yahoo.com
I knew Willie, and we were good friends, (off the track) you were on your own race day and night. Willie got the “5” car I was driving and I been graduated up to the “4” car so, off we go, me following in my 46 Ford rag top. In the trunk I had extra water, fuel, a battery that would fit both cars (Fords) and racing gear.
The racing helmets in those days were like football helmets, leather straps inside and the helmet line around your head ended above your ears and above your eyes! The chin strap got wider over your ears, and narrowed down under your chin.. We would use Air Force rubber

Dirt Track Revival … Chavus Holland DIRT TRACK REVIVAL Luck, superstitions, and Jesus... LUCK…It was February 2009, Chase was just 5 years old, it was only his 4th time to race in his rookie flat kart. We were at a real nice little go-kart track out in the middle of nowhere, looking for his first feature win. Stateline, MS was the name and location of the track. There were about 6 kids there in Chase's class that day. I was so nervous! I had looked over Chase's kart at least 10 times throughout the week, just to make sure everything was on go! I had just put Chase's helmet on his little head and strapped it on tight. I slipped on his neck brace and sat him down in his kart. He could barely reach the pedals. I told him to “hold the brake” just like we had been practicing at home, as I fired up his engine. Did I mention I was nervous? He was sitting there, engine cutting up, ready to roll out and I was standing just a few feet behind him, about to pass out from the anxiety! I'll never forget this… Mr. J.D. Parker came walking straight up to Chase's kart, he bent down right beside Chase's engine, and I saw him pick something up off the ground as he looked up at me. Now I'm already a nervous wreck, and Mr. J.D. is notorious for joking around, but he looked so serious when he reached out and opened the palm of his hand. He had picked up a shiny 5/16” nut! The same kind of nut that held Chase's engine to his kart!!! “Is this yours?” Mr. J.D. asked. “Well I hope not!” I replied nervously, as I jumped down on the ground and made sure it wasn't off Chase's kart. Mr. J.D. just laughed and said “here, now you'll have an extra!” and he handed me that nut. I stuck it in my pocket as Chase rolled onto the racetrack. Chase ran a perfect race and brought home the win! You're talking about a proud Daddy! We were so happy and excited! That night, as I was emptying my pockets at home, I saw that nut and it made me smile. I decided it was a lucky nut, so I put it on my keyring. It has been with me ever My lucky nut on my key ring! since. SUPERSTITIONS…Every since I was a small child I remember hearing stories about certain racing superstitions. Particularly, green and the number 13! I never really knew what the big deal was with this, but just knew we were supposed to avoid them at all costs on race day. Now I've seen drivers win races with the number 13 on their cars, and I've also seen numerous cars in victory lane with green on them! Some racers even wear green fire suits and win races. But as for us, we have always avoided green and the number 13 on race day… JESUS…Fast forward to June 8, 2018. Chase has had some real strong runs the last couple weekends. He really had a lot of momentum going on. He was excited because Adrian was going racing with us this night. (she hadn't been able to go for over a month because of work and other obligations.) She comes walking

out the house (Looking beautiful as ever!) in a green shirt!!! I'm looking at Chase and he's looking at me, both of us knowing that one of us had to tell her she CAN'T wear that green shirt to the races with us! If you know Adrian, you know she's a pistol! So, I say “Hey babe, you look great, but you know you can't wear that green shirt racing, with us? It's bad luck.” She fires right back “if you've got Jesus you don't need luck!!!” She had a great point you know! So, it was then that we realized that she's probably not changing that shirt! We rolled on out towards Hattiesburg Speedway to try our luck…Green shirt and all!!! Chase seemed real confident as he slid into his car, ready for his feature event. We prayed together like we always do. He would be starting in the 3rd position. As they went green, I could tell Chase was very fast! He took over the 2nd position on the first lap and set his sights on the leader! He patiently shadowed the leader before diving under him going into turn one! It was a drag race down the back straightaway. Chase was obviously out horse powered but he had what he needed to keep that line on the bottom as he dove into turn three, side by side! He powered off turn four and down the front straightaway as the new leader! He had made a clean pass and was beginning to gap the field! Me, I was acting a fool hooting and hollering, cheering him on and coaching him every step of the way! Talking to myself obviously because he can't hear me. He came up quick on a fellow competitor with just 2 laps to go. I'm thinking to myself, “OH NO!!!”, even though we've talked about these scenarios over and over for months. I was still nervous because he's never been in a situation like this in the modified where he's lapping cars! It worked out perfect as Chase caught the guy right on the back straightaway and ZIP!!! Clean pass as the white flag was flying this time by! I can't put into words how proud I was at that moment! Watching that checkered flag fly for my favorite racer, for his first time ever in the Open Wheel Modified, at just 14 years old! His Mom, me and Paw Paw George right there cheering him on along with all his new fans!!! I still get emotional watching that video! (Check it out for yourself on our Facebook page, leave us a comment!) Noah (Chase's mentor) couldn't be there that night, but he received a text from Victory Lane! We found out later, that we had more family in the bleachers that night as well! Chase's great Grandpa, Jimmy Sample was there, along with our uncles, cousins, friends, and fans! Awesome feeling!!! During the following days/ weeks, after this amazing win, we received numerous messages and phone calls to congratulate Chase on this great accomplishment! We really enjoyed and appreciated it all! NUMBER 13 and GREEN…I have kept a notebook with all of Chase's racing results and records since he began racing in the modified last year…can you guess how many times this made for Chase to drive this car??? YEP!!! This was his 13th time to race his modified, and it just so happened that someone in his crew decided to wear a green shirt to the races with us that night! Thank goodness I had my lucky nut with me, right?!!! NO, WRONG… Thank You JESUS!!! As Adrian had reminded us, “if you've got Jesus you don't need luck!!!”. Thank You for the many blessings in our lives!!!

We have always set goals for ourselves in racing! Early on, my goal, was to just be competitive and finish races this season! I just want Chase to be safe and have a great time while doing what he loves! Chase, however, was looking for a win before he turned 15! I remember telling Adrian during the caution laps early in this race that Chase was about to win this thing! She looked at me very serious and said, “can't we just focus on finishing right now?!!!”. I said, “we've been finishing the last couple weeks, he's ready for a win tonight!”. He was hungry! I've seen it so many times with him over the years. He has a competitiveness like I've never seen! I used to try to make him tone it down, now days I encourage it!!! We have raced several more times since this victory. We haven't won again yet, but they've known we were there! We've had some great races with real strong finishes! We've also taken Chase to 2 different tracks to compete. One in Jackson, MS and the other in Meridian, MS. Chase is a very clean racer, but he's becoming more aggressive as he gets more seat time under his belt. I don't mean running over people aggressive, but what I mean is he's not afraid to get up on that wheel and go lap after lap, inside or outside, wheel to wheel for a position!
