Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo As we get ready to celebrate another anniversary of MotorSports & Coast Cruizers (July) I’m amazed at how far this newsletter travels. Our subscriptions come from the southern coastal states and from as far away as CA, IN, IL, NY even Canada. And I sure am grateful for all the e-mails, photos and articles folks send in. Eighteen years MotorSports has tried to keep you informed of things to do, places to go and when to do it. Retirement has given me the opportunity to work at this full time.. And I enjoy it. Meeting with people at the cars shows and cruise-ins is my highlight of being the editor of MotorSports. One of the most asked questions is “How can I get my car featured in the magazine?” My simple answerer is, “send me some pictures and a write up about your car/truck or bike and I’ll get it in.” Someone mentioned to me how fast the time fly by, and it just seems they can’t get caught up. I told them it’s not that the time is passing faster, it’s just that they are closer to the finish line. Is there really to much going on in your life? Are you trying to give a little to everyone and find there is no time left for the ones who mean the most to you. Take time out… life is tough and every choice we make has the potential to change our lives forever. Don't neglect the ones who love you. Tomorrow is promised to no one. Treat people well. Remember what goes around comes around and sometimes even worse. …. jimbo Jimbo, SENIORS UNDER ATTACK THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

We Must Stop This Immediately ! Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper. Groceries are heavier. And, everything is farther away. Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long our street had become! And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they're red in the face! What do they think I am, a lip reader? I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and he has aged so much that he didn't even recognize me. I got to thinking about the poor guy while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection well, REALLY NOW - even mirrors are not made the way they used to be! Another thing, everyone drives so fast these days! You're risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the highway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror. Clothing manufacturers are less civilized these days. Why else would they suddenly start labeling a size 36 waisted pant as 40? Do they think no one notices? The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank. Do they think I actually 'believe' the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they're fooling? I'd like to call up someone in authority to report what's going on -- but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they've printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in there! All I can do is pass along this warning: WE ARE UNDER ATTACK! Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities. A chicken farmer went to the local bar... He sat next to an attractive woman and ordered champagne. The woman said: "How strange, I also just ordered a glass of champagne." "What a coincidence," said the farmer, who added, "It is a special day for me. I'm celebrating" "It is a special day for me too, I am also celebrating!" said the woman. "What a coincidence." said the farmer. While they toasted, the farmer asked, "What are you celebrating?" "My husband and I have been trying to have a child for years, and today, my gynecologist told me that I was pregnant." "What a coincidence," said the man. "I am a chicken farmer and for years all my hens were infertile, but now they are all set to lay fertilized eggs." "This is awesome," said the woman. "What did you do for your chickens to become fertile?" "I used a different rooster," he said. The woman smiled and said, "What a coincidence" Till next month… Jimbo

The Coast Cruizer had a dinner cruise to Foley, AL. We met at the park and ride at the Ocean Springs exit about 9:15 am Saturday the 11th. It started out as a bad weekend. Rain canceled a lot of events that weekend but we wouldn't let it stop us. We just switched from the hotrods to our everyday cars and went and guess what, we didn't have any rain over and back. The dinner part was to go to Lambert's, home of the thrown rolls. They now open at 10:30am and the parking lot was full at 11:30 when we rolled in. It didn't take 10 minutes and we were sitting at the table. If you haven't been to Lambert's you will have a treat in store. First the drink orders were taken and the servers come around with the pass-a-rounds The pass-a-rounds start out on paper towels until you get you plate. First to come around was the fried okra, (by the way pass-a-rounds are free that won't be on the side orders). A few minutes later the meals we ordered showed up and were flowing over the side. They say you won't be hungry when you leave and they are right. The special on Saturday was chicken and rice, 3 big pieces of chicken and must have been a cup of rice, then you got 2 sides also. Some had fish, some steak, chicken gizzards, roast beef and a host of other food. These all came with 2 sides. Now the good part. Thrown rolls, better be ready to catch. They do throw the rolls at you. So if you are not good at ball and catching, better duck. The rolls are still warm from the oven and they are yeast rolls about 5 inches across the top and the size of cupcakes on the both. The pass arounds are cooked cabbage , black eye peas, macaroni tomatoes, okra, and fried potatoes and onions. After we ate it was time to hit the outlet stores at the mall. That gave us time to walk off that meal. About 2pm we went our own way some had to get back to the house ,some of us went to the art's and craft show in Foley before heading home. Everybody was back home by 5:30. We will be taking about the next trip and see where it will take us. Check out there web site it has the full menu. www.throwedrolls.com Till we eat again…. J.R.

After the lunch it was off to the outlet stores just up the street. It was a win-win for the men and women. The men got to eat and the women got to shop. Then, after walking off some of the lunch, as we were leaving I just happened to spot the ice cream stand on the side of the road. As if “Homemade” ice cream isn’t enough to get a person to stop…. Joe added the word “Fabulicious” now that is a challenge. Joe wins….. it was fabulicious !! I guess the twenty -two years Joe has been making his homemade ice-cream has made him kind of an expert at what people like. Don’t pass this place up…

Have you ever noticed that they put advertisements in with your bills now? Like bills aren't distasteful enough, they have to stuff junk mail in there with them. I get back at them. I put garbage in with my check when I mail it in. Coffee grinds, banana peels...I write, "Could you throw this away for me? Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!

Misfits Street Krewzers gathered together at their 2nd Saturday night cruise-in to donate checks to the Hancock County Senior Citizens & a very special young lady, that the club has chosen to help with her medical needs.

God Gives every bird it's food, but he doesn't throw it into its nest.

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .. There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.' It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special. A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so........it is time to shut UP! e-mail sent in by: Rusty

By: Steve Kanter I have really gotten into land speed racing (LSR). There's nothing like it, really. No matter what form of racing you have enjoyed, nothing is like Land Speed Racing, nothing! I can write all the stories for you to read, put in details, but you'll never experience what it's really like, unless you go to Bonneville. You all have to go at least once in your lifetime, really!! I'm lucky in that I have a friend who also is really interested in LSR, and built a car. Most of you know Dan Tackett, and most of you know that he does a lot of Corvette stuff. So it seemed natural that Dan's LSR car would be a Vette. Dan worked on the car for about sixteen months. I was in constant contact with Lee Kennedy, Car Technical Committee Chair, SCTA, to ensure that the car was built to SCTA specifications. Dan has built a beautiful car, with some interesting engineering. For example, because the nose is so low and streamlined, and does not have any openings to allow air to pass, Dan built a sealed tank that holds 46 gallons of water, under pressure, that the radiator sits in. The car is a 1954 Corvette powered by a 496ci big block Chevrolet, Power glide, and a Ford nine inch with 250 gears. The 496ci engine was built to spin to 7500rpm! Dan has put a lot of quality and detail into the car. While not painted yet, it will be before we get to Bonneville later this year. It was very important to us that the car be a quality build, so as to represent our team and Mississippi well. To that end, Dan has done a great job. The Ohio Mile. This is a brand new track. The 2013 season was only the second year that this track had been raced at. Located in Wilmington, Ohio, at the old DHL cargo airport, the track is actually an old runway. Most LSR tracks are long, with a mile or two of lead in before you begin your speed run. Not at Ohio. The track there is one mile long with no lead in, and about a mile and a half of shut down. Now for the rest of the story. Bucket List Racing consists of Dan Tackett (owner/builder), Greg Burge (chief mechanic) and Steve Kanter (crew chief). The three of us (with help from some others) loaded the car and our stuff, into the trailer, and headed off to Ohio. We left Thursday night at eight pm, and arrived at the track at nine am Friday morning, unloaded the car, and took it to tech to have it inspected (where it passed with no problems). We joined the ECTA, attended the rookie class, and bought some t-shirts. At about six pm we left the track, got some dinner, finally got to our hotel room at about eight thirty, where we passed out. At six am the next morning we were up. Saturday was race day, and we were ready. We were excited. This was the day that our car would make its very first run, ever. We got out to the track by about seven thirty, prepped the car, and towed it to the start line. We were the 40th or 50th car in line.

8

JUNE 2013

It took us almost five hours of waiting in line, before we could make our run. But, it's almost a party, waiting in line. We actually ate lunch while we were waiting in line. People and racers walk up and down the line talking to each other, admiring each other's cars, and making friends. That's probably one of the best things about LSR, is the friends you make. In speaking with the tech guys, they told us we had to cross the measured mile at 125mph because it was a new car. We were very disappointed, we came to run hard, and we knew the car could do it. After a very long wait, it was our turn. Dan suited up, got in the car, Greg and I pushed the car to the starting line, and Dan cranked her up. She sounded great. After a couple of minutes of warm up, Dan was ready. The starter official received the "track is clear" message from the tower, and signaled to Dan that he could start his speed run. The car left strong, sounded very good, and continued to run good after shifting in to second gear! The car was on its way to making a great pass. As per the tech guy, Dan crossed the measured mile at 132mph. But there's more to the story. At the half mile point, Dan was over 175mph and climbing, with plenty of tach left! Had we been able to make a flat out run, Dan would have been well over 200mph! Shortly after the first run was over, we learned that Dan had set a world record at the Ohio Mile, in A/GMS (Gas Modified Sports). A world record, how cool is that. Dan's car is a world record holder at The Ohio Mile, and it was done on its very first run! We found out that a major rain storm was heading towards Wilmington, so we packed up, and headed back home. In August, we will be heading out to Bonneville, to attempt to establish a new world record in A/GMS, hopefully with our new Sam Scarborough built, 8500rpm!, 500ci big block Chevrolet. We're going to need all the horsepower we can get to break the existing record at Bonneville of 259.829mph! Go fast, Go straight. www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Kids today have heroes that lift buildings and superheroes that fly. This stirs their imagination. Go back to a time in your memory that ignited a spark where your heroes came alive again in your mind. Those who moved mountains; lifted an entire people; and taught the whole world how to fly a few feet off the ground and then into the Galaxy. A time filled with forts and uncharted paths, where the sun couldn't wait to wake up. A time when adventure lurked around every corner. This was the place where real superheroes lived. Is there a difference between remembering the past and living in the past? You betcha! We all know that living in the past is unhealthy. What about remembering the past? We are told by some people that re-building the vehicles we do, remembering what we did in our youth, and then sharing those stories with one another is foolish and a waste of everyone's time. I disagree. What if when we go into our rememories (that is a word I just made up), we might just be stealing a little piece of time. The lessons we learn from the past show us the path to the future. Do we learn more from lectures or from experience? Does sitting in a class teach us more than what the examples of others convey? Happiness, gentleness, kindness, patience, caring, and usefulness are some of the many things we learn from watching and being involved with other people. This is when morals and values blossom in us. Vanilla is the flavor that creeps into our lives… everything starting to blend into one another. We fill up our time with things we are supposed to do and use it to see people we have to see…but when we spend time with those we care about, in a place we feel like family, then we appreciate the true value of life. We put life temporarily on hold. These moments are forever moments. Somehow when we veer off the beaten path, we find something worth coming back to. For car guys and gals, when we need a taste of the unconventional we spend it with our cars and our car friends. What is wrong with remembering the fun times of our past? What is wrong with learning from them? What is wrong with trying to keep some of the great things from being forgotten? When our days all start to run together the unexpected is what we are looking for. Go to a diner for an old fashioned root beer in your hot rod. Let the kids or grandkids stay up late for a drive-in movie. Show your grandkids how to rebuild a car or a tractor. Teach them how to remove rust. Let them help you. Tell them stories about the “American Dream” and let them see that you have attained it. Talk about American pride for our great country, and help them learn the history of how it came to be. Introduce them to soldiers and show them how thankful we are for the sacrifices they make for us, our happiness, and our way of life. Show them what “The land of the free, and the home of the brave” is all about. Spend some time with others so they can witness your example. As I prepare for Memorial Day I remember people who have made the ultimate sacrifice for me. I am so thankful for all the blessings I have and all the people who have gone “out of their way” to encourage and help me. I don't recall any small people in my past…I remember giants! Art Buchwald wrote: ”We seem to be going through a period of nostalgia, and everyone seems to think yesterday was better than today. If you're hung up on nostalgia, pretend today is yesterday and have one hell of a time.” Is there something wrong with remembering the past? I think I'm just going to have one hell of a good time.

2013 DEEP SOUTH FUN RUN POLLEN TOUR AND FOOD FEST What a trip! Ollie Patterson planned the 2013 Deep South Fun Run through northern Mississippi and it was an unforgettable car experience. On Monday, April 8th, eleven classic cars and trucks gathered at the Hampton Inn in Corinth, Mississippi for a meet-and-greet, then sodas and hot fudge sundaes at Borroum's - the oldest drug store in Mississippi. Afterwards, we tramped around downtown Corinth, like a line of school kids on a field trip, in search of the now-non-existent Coca-Cola museum. We bonded as we worked off the calories of the ice cream. For dinner, some of us found room for a steak at Russell's Beef House - a local haunt - which was quite good. On Tuesday, April 9th, the line of pollencovered “yellow” cars pulled out toward Mike's Restoration shop in Iuka which was quite impressive and a The Hot Rod Shop in Corinth, both with private collections which opened just for us. We decided to put Joe's “It's Peach” sedan delivery in the lead, Mark's very-visible blue '69 Chevy pickup in the center, and Doris and J.C.'s “rusty” '64 Nova as the tail. As we set our trusty Garmins for historic Phillips Grocery for a Phil-Up Burger in Holly Springs, the colorful convoy of cars suddenly u-turned off the designated route toward a gas station because Ollie's '66 Rambler made a loud and “strange boom.” The fun -run mechanics stepped up to the plate for diagnosis; the non-mechanics foraged for food. This is when we knew we had a good group and a great leader. Ollie called a wrecker and entrusted his car into the capable hands of The Hot Rod Shop we had just visited. Ollie and Teresa moved their stuff into one car and moved themselves into another car. We bypassed Phillips Grocery because we had already filled up on gas station food, and we headed for the highlight of the day: George Poteet's Ford Farm in Holly Springs.

If you ever get a chance to visit Mr. Poteet's Ford Farm, take it. To get there, you need GPS, radar, and a personal invitation to get in ... but, oh, boy … it's worth it. Hutch and Mr. Tom gave us a guided tour that was beyond belief. Each of Mr. Poteet's garages holds 9-plus Fords and we drove from hill to hill to visit garage after garage, then inside the last stop there was a museum where Hutch and Mr. Tom sat around and regaled the group with stories, jokes, and tall tales about cars and racing and racers for over an hour. Reluctantly, we left the Ford Farm and headed to New Albany, to stay at another Hampton Inn. Upon check-in we were offered a free meal of meat loaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, and three beers. Some of us chose to imbibe only, and then we headed on-downthe-road-a-piece to the locally recommended Vainisi's Italian Bistro. Wednesday morning April 10th found us headed to Water Valley to visit Mr. Odie Shuffield who has acres and acres of cars, tractors, fire engines, building material, outhouses and other objects which have followed him home grown roots. We walked down the earthen pathways in the hills to see the vehicles snuggled door-to-door all along the way. It was a photographer's dream. Mr. Odie also has restored automobiles, collectibles, license plates, and souvenirs. In other words, there was something for everyone to see.

His wife prepared lunch for all of us: Smoked meats, sides, and homemade desserts. The Food Fest continued! Afterwards, the pollen tour moved on to Ronnie Hinton's hot rod shop in Batesville. Mr. Darryl Martin led us to his new home and the guys enjoyed his cars, metal-working tools, and shop while the ladies took pictures of his wife's yard art and garden. Mr. Darryl takes old car parts and turns them into turtles and puppies and flowers, so the ladies were making big plans for their husbands when they get back home. We stopped for the night in Grenada, where there were a few non-chain restaurants to choose from, including LaCaba’s Mexican, Jake & Rip's, and a Pizza Joint where Zen took Joe for his birthday celebration. Oh, boy! Then came the monsoons on Thursday! Hail and tornadoes were predicted. As we waited it out in the lobby of the Grenada

Hampton Inn, with eleven classic vehicles helplessly parked outside, the tornadoes were ravaging Corinth (where we had been on Monday). The Hampton Inn staff kept the breakfast bar open late for us, because our food fest had to continue, even if the Fun Run was on idle. We finally departed from Grenada in the very late a.m. of April 11th. It was still raining and the pollen was rinsed off of our cars, so we could at least tell what color they were. We hooked with J.C. at Walmart in Greenwood, who was driving the trusty Chevy “Rust Is A Color” Nova. Our tail car suddenly became the lead car and we found ourselves in front of a Mexican restaurant. Man this group runs on its stomach! Ok, now we're fed and ready to face a muddy “junkyard” in Moorhead. It stopped raining just as we pulled in. It was cold as Alaska, but we donned coats and rubber shoes, and tramped thru mud puddles (ladies too!) to see the offerings. No parts for sale… whole cars only. No one bought anything, but it was a cool experience - literally. After the Junk Yard Adventure with Jack Triplett, Illinois Paul's '61 Oldsmobile Bubbletop led us as we headed to Inverness for another vintage hot rod shop, but the streets were still too wet for the Inverness club cars to come out and meet us.

We visited with the Mr. Larry Farmer, the garage owner, and then headed to the Catfish Museum and Welcome Center in Belzoni. The curators waited late for us then treated us to the history of catfish farming and gave us catfish recipe booklets. We left with a serious appetite for fried catfish for dinner. Following Joe's “It's Peach” Plymouth sedan delivery, we drove from Belzoni to the Hampton Inn in Yazoo City, but the restaurant du jour was Clancy's BBQ, so the Food Fest continued with BBQ. On Friday, April 12th, our last day, we started out from Hampton Inn in Yazoo City and headed to Mr. Paul Adams's secluded hilltop private collection right there in Yazoo City. His garage was leveled by a tornado three years ago and some of his cars were still in the body shop being repaired, but his garage had been completely rebuilt and well-insulated for comfort. Sadly, the trees had been snapped off for miles when the tornado ripped through his property. Mr. Adams showed us the trolley bus he purchased to provide Civil War related tours for the Main Street Hotel in Yazoo City.

We did a drive-by of the hotel on the way to our next stop. Our cars were again all pollenyellow. Did your brown Riviera turn into a red Torino, Darrell? To keep us from getting lost going to our next two stops in Brandon, Mr. Bob Jackman met us in his correctly-Fordpowered 1932 Ford Roadster to guide us to a collection of Jaguars at Mr. Keith Anderson's.

After a touching blessing, Thomas and his entire family, wife, in-laws, children, and mom and dad, rolled out the red carpet with a catered banquet of chicken, roast, mashed potatoes, green beans, and squash casserole. Of course, we had birthday cake for Thomas and Joe. Thomas has a beautiful shop and great equipment, including that new huge compressor. Thomas can do some serious work in this building. Son T.J. gave us a personalized tour of his vehicles and explained the plans he has for each of them, including his Henry J. Daughter Holley sold us some raffle tickets for the Pisgah school fund raiser.

After this treat … more BBQ for lunch. Now that Ollie was near his home in Brandon, he picked up his “other” hobby car … a 1965 Plymouth Satellite … a #43 Richard Petty tribute car. Now Ollie and Teresa were no longer “hitch hikers.” When Ollie returned to the restaurant, he made a big announcement: His Rambler that had been left behind in Corinth to be fixed at The Hot Rod Shop was now repaired and ready for pickup! Cheers!!

Following this great news, Mr. Bob led the group to his house. He collects cars … both full size and scale models. His lovely wife Ms. Lori builds miniatures … miniature scenes and rooms. It was a museum in miniature. Eye Candy for the ladies! They were the warmest couple we could have ever hoped to meet. What a treat! As we waved goodbye to Mr. Bob and Ms. Lori, we headed off to the final event in a week filled with one highlight after another: A banquet hosted by Thomas Yates and his darling wife, Peggy, at T.J. & Holley's Hot Rod Shop in Brandon.

Ollie presented awards. Best Taxi Service went to Bald Paul and his co-pilot coal-miner Joe in the '61 Silver Bubbletop Oldsmobile. The Long Haul Award went to Paul and Becky from Metairie, Louisiana in their '99 purple R/ T Dodge truck (because super star Goldie, their '69 Torino, was busy making her movie debut back in Metairie then on to Las Vegas). Ollie pulled a name to award a trophy to the car/driver/navigator that made every stop and it went to Paul and Becky also. The trophy for the newest car went to Joe and Zen with their '06 Corvette. When Ollie gave a trophy to the oldest car, it went to Susie Yates, with her '37 Ford Tudor; she decided hubby Casey should accept as the oldest participant. Nice, Susie! At the end of the banquet, some participants headed home, but The Louisiana Contingent stayed over at the Hampton Inn in Flowood: Joe in “It's Peach”, Paul and Becky in their Dodge R/T, Kenny and Susan in their '67 Ford Galaxie XL, and Cindy and John in their '63 Ford Thunderbird. Some Mississippi cars were participating in the car show at the Pisgah Elementary School on Saturday. It was a wonderful week. We had all become fast-friends during the Deep South Fun Run 2013. Five days on the road. Five Hampton Inns. Seven women. Four nurses. Four Joes. Two Pauls. Two Susans. Engineers, mechanics, teachers, shop owners, a coal www.CoastCruizers.com

miner, retirees, secretaries, accountants, a tug boat pilot … car-enthusiasts all! We celebrated two birthdays along the way: Corvette Joe & banquet-host Thomas Yates. Eleven vehicles. Twenty-two participants. Twelve scheduled stops (at least). Fifteen meals (at least). NOT ONE COMPLAINT!!! Cudos to Susie Yates for organizing the stops at the Hampton Inn and arranging a special rate at each hotel. Hugs to Teresa Patterson for being such a doll and so supportive throughout. Ollie Patterson is our hero for planning and implementing the Deep South Fun Run 2013, for juggling the venue cancellations with a smile and maintaining his inimitable good humor, and for providing this fantastic opportunity for such a priceless experience. THANKS FROM ALL OF US!

JUNE 2013 JUNE 2013

As a free public art event originally organized by Orange Show Center for Visionary Arts (the same group responsible for the preservation of the iconic Beer Can House near downtown Houston) in 1988 as a free public art event, the Art Car Parade has more on offer than can absorbed during the one day event. Billed as the largest art car parade in the world, the Houston Art Car Parade may well actually be with 250+ registered participants from 23 states, Canada and Mexico who are riding in on everything from Monster vehicles to unicycles to parade in front of 250,000+ spectators. The public is allowed to walk through the blocks long staging area for several hours prior to the parade beginning where accents from England, Scotland and South Africa could be heard and a up close seek preview of many of the vehicles that will later participate in the parade can be seen. While there are very few vendors present and most of those who are, are associated with the Orange Show Center, don't be fooled, ladies, if you are sitting there thinking, “I'm going to be carted off to this thing next year. Already bored.” This is truly an Art Event in which automobiles are the moving media of choice. Vehicles painted, sculpted, modified and built by artists from beauty salons, spas and boutique shops (some of whom provided a few on-site freebies) sit front-to-fin with Boris Vallejo inspired Chicano themed, lift-kitted lowriders and this year's winner: Big Red, a 2:1 scale VW Baja Bug crafted out of a 1959 Walter Class 1500 by Kirk Strawn & Friends (whose Facebook page is www.facebook.com/walterartgallery). There are cars covered in Peeps, Legos, paper mache superheroes, and Elvis. Cars cut, carved, etched, built from boats, for the Mad Max world, steampunk steamers....there really are more configurations and combinations than can be imagined. It is very easy to be overwhelmed by the shear magnitude of the creativity and joy that each person brings to his or her piece, each and everyone with their very own story to share. It is, in a word, amazing. The most colorful and prominent of the salon cars, Catallic was decorated inside and out by artist Beans Barton for Venus Hair Salon, whose personal Art Car page can be found at www.venushairhouston.com/cataillic.htm . Susan Venus, the owner of the salon and Art Car aficionado has personal galleries of previous year's art car parades on her website. Just check the links listed in hot pink down the left side of the above webpage to see some of the past participants. For more information on the Art Car movement, Harrod Blank has written and contributed to several books and films dedicated which explore both the cars and their owners in more depth. 2013 RODS Run By: Tashia Loots The 2013 RODS Run was the 35th annual event for the Ramblin' Oldies of Denham Springs (R.O.D.S.). The RODS Run is a pre-1949, streetrod only, show held at the Holiday Inn South Baton Rouge on the first weekend in February. This year the weather was spectacular and the attendance numbers were high, topping out at 160 excellent streetrods from all over Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and as far away as Illinois and Oklahoma. Spectators numbered in the hundreds and filled the hotel parking lot all weekend. Pulling up to this event was breath taking. It was truly astonishing to see that many streetrods in one parking lot of such caliber. The Holiday Inn South is a perfect venue for this event and they, along with the other major sponsors, Gerry Lane Enterprises and O'reilly's Auto Parts helped to make this a quality event every year. Nearly 50 Sponsor Awards, provided by local businesses, were handed out on Saturday. At the awards ceremony on Sunday, the Top Ten awards selected by the participants, were given out in our traditional drive-by display. The RODS Club handed out five specialty awards picked by the club. They included Best Paint, Best Engine, Best Interior, Best Engineered, and Best Rat Rod (See lists below). Also awarded were a stained glass wall hanging for the ladies gift and the $500 cash Grand Prize. Especially moving was the RODS Memorial Award and the tribute to Bruce Broussard, a long time friend and treasured member that they lost in the past year. Other activities during the RODS Run included a free cajun style supper for participants on Friday evening, a swap meet, a tailgate package raffle, an auction, and 50/50 ticket sales. The RODS Run terrific signature t-shirt were selling fast all weekend. The RODS Club supports Hospice of Baton Rouge as there Charity of choice and following the event the total donation for this year exceeded $2000. The 2014 RODS Run will be held February 7-9, 2014 at the Holiday Inn South Baton Rouge and the Ramblin' Oldies of Denham Springs would like to invite all streetrodders to come join them at one of the first events of the season. The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. How about one more great plot driven non blockbuster, a place beyond the pines. It stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes. Directed by Dereck Cianfrance and written by Dereck Cianfrance and Ben Cooccio. It is a drama that is rated R and has a 140m running time. I had to see this movie just because I saw the trailer. I see hundreds of trailers every year but this is the first one to feature my favorite style of off road motorcycle racing. Watching Ryan, or Ryan's stunt double ride a dirt bike through the woods sealed the deal for me. This film has a complex plot, actually it was more like three movies in one. Gosslin plays a carnie motorcycle stunt rider who finds out he has a son and tries to get into his life. But the boys mother and boyfriend have a different idea. The frustrated ex-carnie worker tried everything he can think of to win a spot in his sons life but has little luck. Eva Mendas plays the boys mother and does a great job portraying a good mom in a bad situation. Mr Gosslin makes some bad choices and this is where Bradly Cooppers character comes in. He plays a cop who is in the job for all the right reasons but gets no support from his fellow officers or his well to do family. Cooper's character struggles with the situation he is in and does what he has to do to survive and move forward. He ends up being a public figure who has a past he can't escape. The third mini movie plot involves the kids of Gosslin and Bradley's characters. I found this sub plot a bit of a stretch but a good script and top notch acting pulls this film right along and doesn't let you figure out what will happen in the end. I have seen Ryan Gooslin play off beat characters before, Blue Valentine comes to mind. He has no problem going all out to make the character he plays believable. You have to respect someone who is an box office heart-throb but will make himself almost unrecognizable and play a part that is down and dirty. I hope this movie gets recognized with some late year awards also! I almost forgot to mention that it's a period piece. Everybody is rocking the worst clothing the eighties had to offer, teal color workout suits and plenty of mustaches to go along with their members only jackets. Don't let that scare you away from this classic cinema study of crime, police corruption and the hard times and hard decisions of the working poor. I give this film 8 out of 10 pics. Next up is a movie titled Mud, starring Mathew McCounaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepard, Tye Sheidan and Jacob Loftland. Directed and written by Jeff Nichols, this movie is a drama with a 130m running time and rated R. This is not a big budget action packed blowout but a twisted tale of misfortune and redemption. It was nice to see McCounaughey sink his teeth into a unflattering character whose flaws are not easy to forgive. I enjoy his lite comedy work that has been his main job for the last ten years or so, but this role will put him in the running for more respect and maybe some end of the year awards. I don't think I have ever seen academy award winning actress Reese Witherspoon in any movie where she was unlikeable and dressed down, way down. The story is based around two young boys growing up on a river in Arkansas. This is another "white trash" deep south yarn but it's a good one. The two boys discover Matthew's character hiding out from the law, life and his past, and the boys get sucked into the seedier side of life. One of the boys takes a liking to the wayward drifter and drags his best friend into a world of trouble trying to help their new friend. The main focus in this crime filled drifters life is to get a boat in working condition so he can find the only thing that is good in his life. The only hitch is that the boat is stuck in the top of a tree. This actually happens more than you would think! I have seen a plenty of boats put in trees from a few major

hurricanes I have been through down here in the south I won’t give away too much of the plot, but the drifter is looking for his true love and guess who that is! Sure, it's Ms. Witherspoon, but not the one we all grew to love. Her character is complicated and hard to tell how this story will turn out. I also enjoyed the supporting role from Sam Shepard. He plays a neighbor who stays by himself in a house boat. He is crucial to the plot but you won’t see this coming either. Another great performance is given by actor Micheal Shannon. He portrays one of the young boys uncle who has taken his nephew in and raises him the best he can. This is the only bit of comic relieve in the film and isn't laugh out loud funny but did get a chuckle or two. Plenty of sub plots keep you on your toes and keep this movie moving at a good click. watch this movie. I give it 8 out of 10 picks. We are deep into the blockbuster release season and comic book super hero time is here. I did get lucky and caught a couple of great movies that were dialogue/ story driven dramas that will bring the main actors award nominations instead of major pay checks. There is nothing wrong with big checks but watching major Hollywood stars take on unflattering roles for less money makes up for one too many cape wearing muscle bound super hero from fantasy world who always gets the girl and... I did go see a summer blockbuster, you might of heard about it, Iron Man 3. It stars Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Directed by Shane Black. Written by Shane Black and Drew Pearce it falls into the action/adventure genera and is rated pg13 with a running time of 130m. I have seen the other two Iron Man franchise releases and I was let down by this release. The mind blowing effects and green screen magic is pretty dynamic but the lack of interesting back story and dialogue left this film falling a little short of the finish line. These type of stories are read in comic books and that’s where the problem lies with the over the top presentation that is brought to the big screen. Sure, there is plenty of illustration in comic books that has to be overamped to make it to film. The director chose to tell this story by spending millions on effects driven plot while he has some of the best actors in the business not using there god given talents. Robert Downey Jr and Don Cheadle have given great performances in many films that didn't have any effects just counted on great performances.. why not use what they have to push the story along instead of them flying their jet suits and cracking jokes and tag lines. It always seems when they introduce the villain in these stories, he always has plenty of intelligent dialogue describing how he will destroy his nemesis. While the super hero is hanging out by his pool or driving his super rocket car around while the worlds is in dire straights. Maybe next time, if there is a Iron Man 4, let Iron Man and his side kick have the some serious talk time while the bad guy cruises around in his mega tank rocket launcher. Maybe our favorite super dudes can save the world by addressing the united nations or.....just kidding, lets go blow up something! I give this film 6 out of 10 picks Don't forget to watch the movie, “Now You See”. I hope my crowd scenes with Morgan Freeman make the cut! I also have some exciting news to share with all my friends and fans. I have been selected to be in a TV show for the food network. I can’t say much about it but my band and I had a great time filming with the crew and can't wait to watch us on the small screen. CANCER (Jun 23 - Jul 23) The stars say that you are the one most likely to join a cult this month. This stems from your total lack of self worth. Of course if you would hold down a job instead of jacking off all day, you’re self-respect would probably improve. On the bright side, you’re destined to meet the love of your life this month, we can only hope she/he won’t want to sacrifice you to the god’s and drink your blood. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Follow your dreams but listen to your head this time; most bank robbers get caught. Try playing the lotto instead. You will probably gain weight this month (no big deal, you did last month, too). People are finally beginning to respect you - the cash injections you give everyone are finally starting to pay off. It is good to be loved (even if you have to pay for it). VIRGO Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You complain more than most people, basically you are a whiner. This tactic always gets results, usually not in your favor. You are not very diplomatic and will have a hard time with employees and friends this month. Get a life and get over it. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) You are estranged from your family and romantic partner because of your extracurricular activities. Most people don’t want to hang around kleptomaniac pyros. It’s your choice, but you could collect stamps instead. Seek psychiatric help and your whole life could improve. However, it is not a wise idea to have sexual relations with your therapist. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) You keep making passes at your friend’s partners, you will end up lonely and sexually deprived if you keep this up. You should start listening more to the advice of children, they are honest and your acquaintances have been lying to you; they have to, you are so thin skinned. Take a red and chill out. You are very paranoid (even if everyone is talking about you behind your back). SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You are so organized, you have become anal retentive. Your friends quit coming to visit because you are so picky about everything. Lighten up! Your love life is in overdrive, back off a bit and you may actually find time to feed your pets this week. Most people are wiser than you. Pay attention to their advice. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Who cares if it is an involuntary action, it is still gross, and rude to spit on people while speaking to them. You should look after your personal hygene a bit more. Besides bathing on a regular basis, you should add a few items to your wardrobe. Now you know why you are usually sitting by yourself in a crowded bar. Oh ya, “Yo Babe! Give me some money and I’ll make ya feel good” is not a good pick up line, particularly when you spit. Go back to charm school.

JUNE 2013

AQUARIUS (Jan 21 - Feb 19) They don’t call you “Grace” for nothing. Watch out this month for tree roots, wayward cats, and huge potholes, because you may be heading for a fall. On the other hand, it may be your heart on the line instead of your ankle in a cast. The opposite sex obviously can read “Sucker” all over your forehead, you are likely to get taken advantage of this month (what else is new) albeit you will have a hot time in the sack before you get dumped! PISCES (Feb 20 - Mar 20) You must eat bran for breakfast, lunch, and dinner lately. You’ve been walking around like a pinched-up Neanderthal. Get the frown off your face, eat some cheese, and relax. Hey, it’s a new year after all and your stars say the month is going to be very profitable for you. So get your butt to the casino! ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 20) If the stars say you will become a millionaire this month, do you believe it? If they tell you to jump off a bridge, will you? Probably, because you will believe just about anything. Get a clue Aries people, your buddies only come over to your New Years Eve party because they don’t want to listen to your whining crap if they don’t. Take a little astral advise and learn to take constructive criticism without your bottom lip pooching out. Sissy lala. TAURUS (Apr 21 - May 21) You thought the bull stood for proud, strong, warrior. What it stands for in your life is bull****. You have something to say about everything, but you never say anything worth a damn. If you would stop talking for a minute, you would notice that the person you are talking to is still nodding their head and saying “um hum” with that dazed look in their eyes for several seconds afterwards. Well, this months stars say you are going to get yours when you meet someone who puts that stupefied look on your face because they will actually out bull**** you. HA! GEMINI (May 22 - June 22) And we thought Aries were a bunch of sissy lala’s. If you looked up wet noodly mush feelings in the dictionary, it would say Gemini. Get a lovemate that will deliver, and you’re whole output on life will improve. You will actually grow a spine to go with your new bravado.

Dirt Track Memories by: Larry Dunham

Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my article have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. Its May, and we go to press a week before the Indy 500. Racing never be the same since they changed the body styles and made them aerodynamic bullets instead of race cars that run the Indy 500. In 1956, I was one of 4 midget drivers who were to take the drivers test in the #41 car on the 500 track. Billy Garrett, URA champion 1955-56, Edger Elder, Don Edmunds and myself. In those days you had to have 4 drivers who had competed against you in midgets or sprints. My sponsors were Johnnie Parsons, Jonny Tolan, Johnny Mantz and Jimmie Reese. Edgar was also chief mechanic and one hell of a good engine builder. He went out twice, looped it, (spun out) each time. Next out was Billy Garett, good pal of Don & I. Billy came to me and said “can you fix the car before I go out”? I told him, “sure but I have to have Ernies o.k.”. (Ernie Csale) car owner with Lyle Greenman. I went over to Ernie and got the o.k. and cranked in 220 lbs in the left rear. Billy looked at me, and I said “the back end won't hunt the fence any more”. He grinned, said “thanks” and went out and turned 140 mph in the dirt car (see photo). The car was built for dirt, Ed Kuzma had built the car for J. C. Aggajanian, and Clay Smith had put his genius in the “Offy” engine. This was 1956, Kurtis “Roadster” were the new “hot set up” and they won the pole (and the race). So much for Indy 500, now we have drivers in “Roller Skate”) chassis and no one can pronounce their names. They are good in those cars, but only Tony Stewart (who led the race 2 different races, but had engine failure both times while leading the race) could do Nascar & Indy. Todays race (NASCAR) are run for the sponsors. In the old dirt days fast time qualifiers started in the rear. The promoters wanted a show, excitement, and most of all the “danger element” especially on dirt! Drivers in the 40's & 50's wore a leather jacket, WW II air force goggles, black fresco jeans, (my choice) and a leather 1/8 th thick face mask to slow down rocks and or dirt clods that hit you in the face. This photo is Gardena, Calif., known as Western Speedway, and usually promoted by J. C. Aggajanian. This was not my car, but Johnny Tolan fixed me up with the “Offy” team car #34 that Dumpsey Wilson drove, Dempsey drove the #32 Mitch, you know when Tolan came out to Calif. every winter he would drive Bill Kretch's Inglewood Tire #76 midget and also the Indy car at the 500. You know Johnny was behind me getting his 1956 Chevy factory stock car backed by Mauri Rose, head of Chevy racing division. Of course the car was #76 Tolans midget #. Johnny pitted next to us at the 500, that

year he was driving the Trio Brass Foundry Special #34. Note the #34 on the Offy midget he fixed me up with. I lived in Norwalk, Calif. at that time and Johnny Tolan and Willie Swift also lived there. Portrait of Dorothy: I'm living in Memphis, Tenn., driving for Joe Lucy, its 1949 and Danny Burke, a great race driver and chassis fabricator fixed me with the #5 midget team car to #4 that Danny was driving. During the week we would go over at nite and work on Pat Clancy Indy 500 chassis. It had 4 rear wheels (legal at that time) but had to be in tandem, not side by side. So one nite after we finished I'm headed home, but swing into a Mr “A's” Coffee shop to get a cup to go. As I'm waiting, I feel a tap on my shoulder, I turn around and there is Dorothy! 5' 5” about 118 lbs long black hair all the way down to the middle of her back, and bust line that would make a baby cry for more! 38's for sure! “D” Cup” She smiled and said “weren't you at Clancys shop tonite”? “Yes” I replied, “but I didn't see you.” “I was in the office with my Dad, he is with Bardahl and in their racing division” she murmured with a slight smile. “Are you going to run the midget this Saturday nite at West Memphis”? she asked. We were standing at the counter and I answered “shall we get a booth and how did you know about West Memphis?” “ Dad and I go there every race nite and he is having an after the race party on our house boat, on the river” she said smiling and put her hand on my arm. I damn near dropped my coffee to go, and tried to look normal. “Here is a map showing our house boat on the river, and how to get there after the race” she said smiling. I was young and dumb, and thought I was faster than I was, so a driver named Roscoe Rahn used to needle me to bet $5.00 on who would have fastest time at West Memphis on Saturday nite. I never did beat him for fastest time but I sure learned a lot from Danny Burke on how to set up for qualifying time. So after the race I see Dorothy in the pits, and she says “bring a swim suit”. It was an August nite and about 90 degrees. I followed the map, pulled into a fenced field and followed the road past the house down to the river where the house boat was parked. Man, this was some kind of boat, about 25 x 50. Dorothy showed me thru, wearing a 2 piece swim suit, lemon colored, and being Italian decent, black hair, black eyes, and brown skin she was one to remember. “Did you bring a suit?” she asked, looking straight into my eyes and smiling. You do swim don't you?” She teased. “I'm wearing it now” I replied. She grabbed me by the hand, off the boat, down about 20 feet to a tiny cove with a sand beach. I'm sure it was man made, but we stopped there, she turned and softly said, “drop off those clothes and lets go in”! It was a warm nite and the cool water felt great! I turned around to look at her, and floating in front of her was the top to the 2 piece swim

by: Lynn Makua Summer has finally arrived, and I'm going down Beach Blvd. in “Precious” (my 300 ZX) and listening to one of my Hawaiian Tapes. The white caps are showing which reminds me that this month (June) starts the season for Katrina and all of her relatives until November 3rd. My birthday is Nov. 4th so having been thru Katrina, (has it been 8 years?) I have 2 reasons to celebrate my birthday and all of us that lost it all and rebuilt. The beach boulevard has been completely rebuilt, new sea walls, and pavement. Spring break had lots of beach goers and they are disappointed that the Waveland Pier has never been repaired. I'm sure the owners of North Beach and Trapani's are unhappy with the strange looking “barn like” building that has been built on the ocean side across the street, and ruined the view for both restaurants, especially the sidewalk patio tables. I know, technically it's called the “sound” but it is connected to and part of the “ocean”. Right? Jim Mitchell of “Red Rooster” fame took Larry and I to the “Blue Bayou Restaurant” at the Silver Slipper for dinner. It was great! If two people order the prime rib you get a bottle of wine for free. So of course the guys went for it. I did the Filet and got a glass of wine! We asked for “Cory” our favorite waiter and I enjoyed every bite of filet. You want to get spoiled just ask for Cory and it will be automatic. By the way girls, he is the best built and best looking waiter in town and single! How about that Simon? The portions were so huge that I asked for “to go” box. “Easy” my ½ Siamese Cat was ready and waiting for her treats. It was a change from her spam, but she went for the beef with pleasure. I was enjoying the great view and it reminded of a story of one of my Waikiki Beach boys. Panama Dave Baptiste, his mother was Hawaiian and his dad was part Canadian part French. He never had a nine-to-five job. He never owned his house, bought a new car or made an investment. For more than forty years his business address was Waikiki Beach, his office the “nearest bar”. He was Waikiki clown prince, a lovable five feet seven crackerjack who learned early on that his job in life was to keep people laughing. Panama Dave was one to Waikiki's greatest characters. He was an actor on a different kind of stage, a celebrity in the swimsuit who became almost as famous as those he amused. The rich adored him and showered him with presents. “Everywhere he went everything was free”, recalled his old friend and fellow beach boy Turkey Love. He'd go to the bar and everyone would buy him drinks. And he wouldn't ask. They just buy. While some beachboys were known as watermen (as my Uncle Blue Makua) and others as musicians, Panama was a personality. Panama was a personality. His function on the beach was primarily social. His role was to do and say the unexpected thing, to be the life of the party to Panama. “ He was tirelessly entertaining,” recalled one of his benefactors, Jerry Hallinan, a title insurance executive from San Francisco. The big wheels who came all sat and laughed with him. Check out the two pictures one is Panama with a young Mickey Rooney (courtesy of Charlie Lambert). Second one, on the grounds of the Royal

Hawaiian Hotel, (second oldest hotel in Waikiki) a car dealer has Panama Dave behind the wheel of an ad promoting a new 1950's Buick. Looking on are beachboy Steamboat Mokuahi and Curly Cornwell. Photo courtesty of Steamboat Mokuahi. One more thing about Panama, it was he who coined the term “sponsors” to describe his rich friends, of which there many. Alfred S. Bloomingdale, the department-store millionaire who founded Diners Club, was particularly partial to Panama. According to Harry Robello, Bloomingdale was one of the biggest tippers ever to step foot on Waikiki B each. When he was leaving, he would start down the beach with thousands of dollars in his shirt pocket and ask Panama, “What shall I give this guy?” And Panama would say,” I don't care what you give him, but you give me five-hundred bucks.” And he got it. Once he even got the car Bloomingdale had been driving.

Just one more story that Larry would enjoy. A Texas millionaire, an oil man came to Waikiki and stayed for three week. One afternoon he came into the Moana's Kamaaaina Bar. The millionaire gave Panama a gift- money clip in the shape of an oil derrick with a diamond on top. Panama was very proud he passed the money clip around for everyone to admire. He then threw it across the table. “What the hell good is this?” he asked. “How you give me a money clip and not put anything in it?” Panama sat in silence for a few minutes and then disappeared. A short while later he returned with the money clip. This time the millionaire filled it with a wad of green! The reason Larry would like this is because it would be like someone giving Larry a race car and no engine! Lets talk Mississippi: It's a beautiful morning ( I don't know how long it will last) so I decided to stay local (Precious hates rain) and got on Hwy 90. My first stop is Mombo Graphixs & Art Studio 541 Hwy 90, Waveland, MS. The owner is Scott Blackwell. He bought the whole center. Check him out www.mombocompany.com . I then walk next door to the Stink Shak The Coast's Most Unique Store! Sandy was working. She said they have been in business for 15 yrs. The owners are Barbara Alonzo, Danielle Doolan. I liked walking in to this place. Candles were burning and it smelled really good. They have all these essential oils that help stress, headache etc. They provided personal service. You can email them with any question at stinkshak@hotmail.com I now head for the “new bar” The 19th Hole. (used to be Clyde's Bar) The new owner has just had the bar for a month. The owner is Scott . At this time every Sunday Free Crawfish. Grand opening is June 2. Band, Food, Drink Specials! They are open 7 days a week. M-F 2 p.m. till Happy Hour M-F 3-7 p.m. Check them out on facebook! It's Thursday and time for me check out the Kiln. I stopped at Kiln Bill's. They do not have their liquor license yet. The kitchen was open and they had a band on their dock. This was around 2 p.m. They had beer. Since I don't drink beer I headed to see Diane of Dempsey's. I stopped at her gift shop (see her ad) first and I was surprised to see Lee working. (who used to be bartender at Harold & Lillian's) I then go next door to Dempsey's. You get 10% off anything in the gift shop with a receipt from Dempsey's. So, I had a glass of wine! Last month rumor had it that C & R Bar in Bay St. Louis had leased out their bar. I heard thru a good source (Beas) that the deal fell through. It's Friday and time to go to the VFW in Bay St. Louis and have some french fries. Star is the bartender. Since she came back from her Cruise she has been dressing pretty sexy! Must have been a great cruise. Friday night seafood, chili on Sundays sometimes. The 2000 sq ft. is still rentable for reunions etc. Watch next month for some of my old and new places! The Hot Rod Show was a big hit in Vidalia, LA at the Cruising on the River Car Show. Vidalia, LA and Natchez, MS are cut in half by the mighty Mississippi River. The Cruising on the River Car Show was one of the most beautiful places to have a car show and we had a blast! It's Sunday afternoon and we just got home and got everything unloaded, it's 4pm as I sit down at the computer to write this column. I am facing a deadline of tonight to get the story in to the magazine. So I have to talk errr write and type fast! When you're hired to MC and do the music for a car show you never know what you're getting into or what kind of folks you're going to be dealing with. You just have to hope for the best. This car club was one of the best! My wife Scotty and I took Friday off, grabbed our granddaughter Kaley and headed out for Cruising on the River. We arrived a little after lunch at River Front Park in Vidalia. I was expecting to be looking at tall levies… but that was not what we found. What we found was a gorgeous view of the Mississippi River and one of the greatest places to have a car show! The show started on Friday, we were booked for Saturday so we setup the Hot Rod Show trailer, at least all we could the day before. We then headed over to the motel in Natchez to get checked in. Once that was out of the way we set the GPS on food and went in search of a place we had been told about before we left home called Fat Momma's Tamales. After filling our bellies with good food it was back to the motel for a nap. We wanted to be as fresh as possible for the car show on Saturday. At 6 pm we met the Ronnie Martin and The River City Bad Boys Car Club back at the show because they were taking us out to dinner and we love to eat. We had a great meal of fried catfish and fellowship at the Sand Bar Restaurant and of course the club picked up the tap which was a pretty good ticket with Kaley along with us. At 13 that girl can eat. Then it was back to the motel for an hour or so of TV and a good night's sleep…that 5:30 am wake up call would be coming early. The next morning we had planned to eat the Shoney's breakfast buffet, but with two females and makeup we were lucky to get to go through the McDonald's drive-thru. We arrived at the car show about 7 am and starting getting everything setup to rock the Cruising on the River Car Show. Set-up took an hour and a half and we were rolling. From about 8:30 until 11 we play various music…I refer to it as the wakeup show. By 11 most of the cruisers have arrived at a car show and it's time to crank it up!

show. I go down the line with the wireless microphone and have each veteran give their full name, their home town and what branch of service they served our country. Once everyone has spoken, I thank them for their service and ask for a round of applause, we then ask one of the veterans to hold our American Flag and we play the national anthem. That is the official kickoff of the Hot Rod Show. Mega 50/50 is one of the things that I specialize in. I love to raise huge pots and give away a lot of money to one lucky cruiser. It makes their day and mine. It also allows car clubs to do great works with the proceeds. Although I couldn't convince the River City Bad Boys to go with the Mega 50/50, a $5 ticket; I was determined to blow away their previous pot of $300. It started kind of slow and gradually built throughout the day. Every time Linda Byrnes road by in the golf cart to give me a 50/50 total update she had big smile on her face. The pot was a little less than $2,000 dollars, but the club rounded it up and gave a very happy cruiser $1,000. The winner kindly gave the club back $260 for the club's favorite charity. There were some amazing cars and truck at this year's show, the last number I heard was over 160 cars. With the great time folks had, there will be many more cars there next year, because over 160 salesmen left there that will be telling everyone about what a great time they had.

Donald Domingue of Rayne, LA and his 1955 Ford Sunliner

Veterans lined up for the Veterans Tribute Just before 11 am I call all the veterans to the trailer for one of my favorite parts of the show. We line up all the veterans across the front in a straight line, we must have had about 30 or more that reported in for this

JUNE 2013

Out of many amazing cars at the show…one really got my attention. A 1955 Ford Sunliner owned by Donald Domingue out of Rayne, LA. This car was straight and perfect with an amazing black paint job, completely original. Donald told me the story that each of 400 Ford dealers got one of these special Sunliner convertibles in black. He wasn't sure if the story was true or not, but I can tell you this was one amazing car. It was amazing how many cruisers came by the Hot Rod Show trailer and told us how much they enjoyed the music and the show. That is always worth its weight in gold to hear those kind words. As the car show came to an end and we were loading up, the president of the River City Bad Boys, Ronnie came by telling us he wanted us back next year and I needed to get him a contract in the mail. Well I'll tell you this…we had such a great time at the Cruising on the River Car Show that we're planning to be back next year. It's a car show you should plan on in 2014…because it was a blast!

Sunday morning with no time constraints we were able to get that breakfast buffet at Shoney's and it was worth the wait. We made it home by 3 pm and got the truck unloaded and I was able to sit down and share our great weekend with you. To be honest, I didn't do it justice because it was so good, but I wanted to leave room for the photos! Get your Hot Rod out of the garage, take in a car show or 10 and enjoy that 17 FOREVER‌Hot Rod state of mind! A Sweet Southern Belle and a Rebel Ride By: Denise “Neecy” Cobb dcob2107@yahoo.com Angie O'Neal, AKA “Scarlet” is a small town southern belle from Georgia. She has been modeling in the Atlanta area for about two years. I met this stunning lady at a car show in Georgia and when I saw her, I knew I had to photograph her! She is not only beautiful, but is as sweet as honey! I asked her if she would pose for me and she immediately agreed. After, we viewed the photos taken with a fantastic hot rod, I decided that she must be featured. Here is her story as she told it: “I mostly modeled boutique and swim suites until I met Tamie Landreth last year and became interested in pin-up. Tammy started a pinup team called Bombshell Bettiez'. I love the sexiness and classic beauty that a pin-up portrays. The clothing is made to flatter a woman's body and makes a strong statement. On my off time I love to do pin-up events with the group. We have crazy fun times together! I do some other modeling also, but now mostly pin-up. The modeling really started out as a hobby but has recently sort of taken off and I'm actually starting to get published. It's exciting! For hobbies I love fashion, working out, and being on the lake all summer. I love ski boats and motorcycles, especially Harley, and cruising on long road trips to the mountains of North Ga. and Tennessee. Put me on the water or on a bike and I'm a happy girl.”

The featured hot rod is a 1936 Dodge pick-up truck built by Greg Mize of Grey Beards customs in Birmingham, Alabama. This flat black gem has a Chevy 350 engine, a custom frame and custom bed. It is also chopped and stretched. Greg is not new to the hot rod scene. He has owned a wheel and tire shop that includes a mechanic for fourteen years now. About five years ago he attended a Good Guys show, and saw his first rat rod and decided that he wanted to start building them. He has built eight rat rods and hot rods since then; one of them featured in Rat Rod magazine. Greg is currently working on a 1930 Model A sedan and a 1930 Model A coupe.

The teacher was asking her students what they wanted to be when they grow up. It was Johnny's turn. Johnny said, “I wanna be a billionaire and go to expensive clubs, find a bitch there, and buy her a million dollar apartment in Vegas. Get her a Ferrari, buy her a beach house in Miami, a jet to fly with, get her expensive jewelry and have sex with her 3 times a day. The teacher was lost of words and didn't know what to do. So, she just proceeded along and asked Marie what she wanted to be. Marie replied, "Without a doubt, ma'am, I'd like to be Johnny's bitch!"
