Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo April was a disappointment from the car/truck & motorcycle scene. Almost every event was cancelled and most people are staying close to home. At first the idea of being stuck at home sounded like a good idea and we could get a lot of the jobs we have been putting off done. Now that May is here staying at home is not much fun at all. I miss the freedom to come and go as I pleased. Who ever would have thought that within a few short weeks the world changed as much as it did. Our political leaders have a lot of control over us, more than I thought possible. With just the right conditions our federal, state and local government can collapse our economy, close our business, keep us in our homes and not be able to visit family, friends or even go to church. I don’t want to get the flu, get sick and die and I sure don’t want to be responsible for passing it onto someone else. I’m sure you don’t either but how are we ever going to feel safe again? As a quote…. “If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom.” Dwight D. Eisenhower On a final note, I pulled into my favorite gas station to fill up before making deliveries. “DJ”, one of the best station attendants on the Coast came up to me and get her copies of MotorSports Magazine. After a few minutes of small talk about how the dreaded Corona virus has caused the toilet paper shortage and none of the stores had any.. she asked if I liked coffee. “Sweet tea & coffee are about the only thing I drink” I replied. Well “DJ” proceeded to tell me, “you know, in an emergency, coffee filters can be used in lieu of toilet paper, however it does change the taste of the coffee!!

Fielder's Goin' to Town Car Show March 7, '20 We'd like to thank all of you that participated in the annual Fielder's Goin' To Town Car Show in Downtown Brookhaven, Ms. on March 7. We had the largest attendance we've ever had. . . 265 registered vehicles. We had probably the best verity of entrants you'd find at any show this size. For example; a '41 Packard convertible that once belonged to Clark Gable, a '62 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty factory drag car (Big Chief) that dominated the class in Jackson and surrounding tracks in the early '60's, and a large assortment of street rods, muscle cars, and pic-ups rounded out the field. The weather cooperated with clear skies and mid sixty tempts. It was a perfect day for a car show. Our usual concession stand, The Road Kill CafĂŠ, wasn't able to make it this year but, the downtown restaurants saw an opportunity to cash in on the crowd by giving discounts and incentives to draw the hungry folks inside for lunch. I think they all did well. Fielder's Pro Shop was again our title sponsor this year (as they have been for the last several years) and with their support along with other local businesses we were able to give out over 250 door prizes. . . including two refrigerators. On top of that... we handed out nearly 100 awards. King Daughter's Medical Center sponsored the Top Twenty Five awards and Stan King GM Super Store sponsored the Sweet Sixteen. With our show sponsors and the number of entries we had we were able to make a nice donation to the two places we support... Dickerson Place Baptist Children's Village and Brookhaven Animal Rescue League. Again, we'd like to thank all that participated and to our sponsors for supporting our annual show. We're already getting door prizes and discussing ways to make our show better. We hope to see y'all next year on the first Sat. of March 2021 in downtown Brookhaven. Y'all Come!! Last month I discussed the early days and the birth so to speak of drag racing. And how those early folks had very little to work with in regard to speed equipment. There were no seat belts nor safety helmets, other than someone's leather belt and maybe a recycled football helmet. There really were no rules regarding what materials to use and any certification process to be able to race a car, you simply run what you brung. Until of course the NHRA was formed. They really struggled and had a passion and a willingness to try to go faster than the other driver. All of that said, some of those early racers are no longer with us. However, I know for a fact there are many still among us today. They are just a tad older than many of us, and many are still involved in the hobby of this fun with cars stuff we do. And we still have a lot we can learn from them. Maybe that's why I have always been able to connect with the folks that are just a bit older than myself. I have always wanted to learn, but to learn from those that have done some of what I am attempting. Many of these folks have had some large influences in my life. I might add many of these folks are quite unassuming, in regard to their past experiences in the early days of drag racing. We just have to hunt them out. Its really not that tough to find them either. At any car show or cruise night just look around and befriend the older than you crowd. Introduce yourself and mostly just sit and listen. You may just find yourself meeting a guy that at one time sat behind the wheel of a front engine rail that ran in the high sixes in the late sixties. Its also quite possible you may also be amongst a guy that has won several National events as well. They are out there you just have to avail yourself to listen to their stories. Just keep looking they can be found. The sad part is they are disappearing fast. Age is taking its toll on these old racers, at least the ones that survived to tell their tales of early racing. I do my best to chat with these folks as much as possible. To me they are walking and talking history from an era that is no longer. Many have a wealth of knowledge in chassis setup as well. And not just applicable to racing. One almost has to have big sponsors and lots of support staff and large sums of money to participate in and be competitive on the national level. Yes, there is still grass roots racing going on, that can be seen on local strips across the country. But I am referring to being able to compete and travel the Nation wide NHRA circuit in Top fuel, Funny car, or even Pro stock. That's what many of these older guys and gals did back then and many were very competitive on a shoe string budget. Several I know have those trophies of the guy standing next to a slick, I refer to those as Wally's. Yes, that means they won a National meet. They don't just throw them things around like participation trophies either. It had to be earned, and many times the hard way. So, if you can search them out, do some research on the internet, then go find one or as many as you can and just sit and listen, and when given the opportunity ask a question or two. You just may be surprised at some of those responses. I have had the pleasure to meet many of them and would enjoy meeting more. The weather looks to be perfect so the Carriage House has been calling. Until next time Later Gizmo
This Month not much to report.. The World is fitting the Corvo 19 pandemic. Lots of sickness/illness and loss of life and lots of change going on. Eventually I believe we will find correct treatments/vaccine or a cure. (our nurses, doctors all our health care professionals are the greatest at what they do) Things may never be totally the same but we will get back to some type of routines again. The economy and job markets will come back and we will move on. I myself will and I hope everyone will remember to spend our money at home. You know the old AMERICAN WAY... BUY AMERICAN MADE, remember it all begins at home in your community. Shop your local mom/pop Stores, Restaurants and Businesses. Remember to keep GOD with us always. Now for some car info. During this down time some of us I see are cleaning, doing maintenance and upgrades to our rides. Glenda is happy with my winter upgrade to the old gray Ford truck. I added heat/air (thanks for the parts Mark). So if you see us with the windows up you know why. Hopefully everything will be back cruising in the future, just might be less hugs/handshakes and a little social distancing sitting in front our cars. See everybody soon... Allen.

Racing Baja Were you aware that a 1976 AMC Pacer was driven by Gordon Olsen and Bob Stone in the 1979 SCORE Baja 1000 Pro Class race? Were you aware that it finished in second place Class 6 (production cars), behind a Ford Ranchero truck? A truck with a V-8 engine to boot? That is the truth. Dropouts from these races are common, so anyone who even finishes a Baja race is a winner. An automobile that was marketed as an economy car in an off-road race seems odd. Actually, since inception, everything about this American Motors vehicle appeared absurd. Richard A. Teague, chief stylist for American Motors in 1971, designed a vehicle to offer the interior room and the feel of the big automobile that customers of domestic cars were accustomed to, yet in a much smaller, aerodynamic and purposefully distinctive exterior package. The project was named “Project Amigo” and featured an never before seen body style, using the latest technology and exceeding upcoming safety regulations. It was the first car that was ever designed from the inside, out.
Kenosha, Wisconsin assembly plant on December 3, 1979. The large glassed in area increased the car’s weight, made the interior extremely hotter than other cars, and only produced 22 miles per gallon. The Pacer’s unconventional styling was commonly cited in its lack of success. Other concerns included a lack of cargo space when carrying a full load of passengers (because of its short wheelbase). Cargo space was increased to 29.5 cubic feet by folding down the back of the rear seat, forming a flat floor. The initial engine for this car was to be the lightweight Wankel Rotary engine, but when AMC was ready to purchase these engines from General Motors, the purchase deal fell through. This forced them into using the much heavier standard straight six cylinder engines the manufacturer had been using in other models, causing drivers to complain about the lack of power for this heavy vehicle that weighed in at 3425 lb. Two engines were available, the 232 cubic inch with a single-barrel carburetor and optimized for low emissions, including exhaust gas recirculation, and the larger 258 cubic inch engine which delivered better mid-range torque. In 1976, a “High Output” version of the 258 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder engine was offered, which helped performance at the cost of higher fuel consumption. By the time a 304 cubic inch engine was offered in 1978, the company had already lost the battle. The first wide small car was just too expensive for this tiny company. Several of the styling ideas were futuristic, including the cab forward layout, rear wheel drive, and the A-pillars moved forward. The low drag design featured a drag coefficient of 0.43, low for that period of manufacture. The rain gutters were eliminated and the top was smoothed which blended the tops of the doors into the roof, a detail that has become the norm in today’s designs. LED instrument panel lights were designed for this car, but problems with cold and slow response time forced this idea to be dropped prior to production. A unique feature was that the passenger door was four inches longer than the driver’s. This made passenger loading easier, particularly from the rear seats.
Introduced in showrooms on February 28, 1975, the Pacer had a purpose to attract buyers of traditional large cars to a smaller package during a time when gasoline prices were anticipated to rise dramatically. The first year of production had good sales with 145,528 units. The other manufacturers did not react quickly to the oil crisis, and were blindsided by it. The increased demand for compact and economy vehicles was fast growing and was partially being filled by foreign makes and models. U.S. automobile buyers quickly adjusted to smaller and lighter cars, particularly imports that produced better gas mileage. Pacer sales fell after the first two years, though the automobile continued to be built through the 1980 model year. Similar to its mid-year introduction, production ended at the

So there you have it. The Pacer was a luxury automobile with upscale interior appointments, a comfortable ride that compared to larger production cars, great vision from the enlarged glassed in areas, and it attempted to have good gas mileage (although it failed). This vehicle had aerodynamic styling and features that have survived through the years. Was it a success? You be the judge. There is a fine line between unique and strange.
The Pacer has been customized over the years, raced with moderate success, and featured in movies. A unique shape and style makes this car recognizable. The Pacer still lives on in the hands of owners who still appreciate them, and they still generate a lot of interest at car shows. A car that was just a little bit different. Isn’t that what an icon is all about? Two fish are sitting in a tank. One looks over at the other and says: “Hey, do you know how to drive this thing?” I think it is funny and appropriate for 2020 where I am getting 40 days to the gallon.

the bed of my pickup once I came back in to dock. I would have to unload everything out of the kayak to be able to lift it back on to the bed of the truck. I used a bed extender designed to carry a kayak, but it was still a problem. It never caused a problem at the boat launch, because no one was ever waiting, but I saw where it could become one. So I started looking around for solutions. You can watch and learn everything you want to know about kayaking on YouTube.

Wow…We have been through the mill, all of us. I have now been working from home a month, because of COVID 19. I work for COX Media and they have really taken care of their employees during this pandemic. Thank you so much COX! I lost two car shows, the New Roads Street Festival Car Show, (rescheduled for Saturday June 6) and Burning Up The Beaches (canceled for this year). So that was terrible.
It’s like being 16 again Gas is cheap and I’m Grounded This self isolation is horrible, I’m a people person so I have been bouncing off the walls with this stay at home thing. The positive thing is I’m not driving 68 miles each way back and forth to work, so I’m now getting a week per gallon on my truck! Lol
So after watching different ways of carrying a kayak, I decided a trailer would be best. A lot of folks use the cheap little utility trailer from Harbor Freight. I almost went that direction; however I wanted to be able to back the trailer into the water, with those painted trailers it would not have lasted very long in salt water. So I knew I needed a galvanized trailer. Some guys were converting Jet Ski trailers to kayak trailers and I decided that would be the way to go… so I kept an eye on the classifieds to find a deal on one. I finally found one and negotiated the price of $200… which I could live with. Once I got the trailer home and started taking it apart, I found it was in better shape structurally than I thought. The first thing was to take the Jet Ski runners off, convert the runner mounts to accept two, 2-inch, schedule 40 PVC pipes. I took the old decrepit lights off, but left the wires inside the rails to attach to, to pull the new wires in. I sanded down the areas that had rust on them and painted the trailer with cold galvanized paint, really just touching it up.
(Blue Angels) A highlight of being home has been Blue Angel practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. I live as a bird flies, about a quarter mile from NAS, the home of the Blue Angels six months of the year. I had heard their practices were pretty impressive, but was never home to see it. Now I am home! They sound like they are coming into my living room. It is frigging awesome. As I am writing this column they are practicing. I also realize if they should make a mistake in the precision flying I could be taken out since I’m in the flight path, but I trust ‘em and I love the sound of freedom rattling the pictures on the wall, it is heaven! I started a project, so I was able to piddle with it a little bit every day. As you know I kayak fish in the bay in Perdido, (Pensacola). I added a motor to the kayak to expand my range. With that addition came a big problem, weight. With the motor and a couple of batteries the kayak became too heavy to load back into

One thing I learned is the kayak trailer disappears when hooked to the truck…when backing up you can’t see the trailer until its catawampus, so I ordered some orange guide poles to be able to have a visual reference when backing up. Got those installed. Also I had to replace and reconfigure the winch, lower to be a stop up front for the kayak. The tires are going to have to be replaced down the road. I treated them repeatedly with an incredible product from Wurth USA called Rubber Care. The best product I have ever used for rubber on Hot Rods or anything else rubber. I also use it on my bicycle tires. I re-wired and installed new lights, took my time and did it right. I also re-packed the wheel bearings and added the proper air to the tires.

Coast Cruizin got some good PR and all the guys that helped on stage got their shot on TV. Thanks to Joe and Amanda Martin for that whole deal. If you did not see it you can watch it online at watch.MotorTrend.com. It’s season 4 episode 10. I have on the red shirt. Emerald Coast Cruizin is still a go for November, 11-14. Get registered at emeraldcoastcruizin.com
The last step was to add the cargo straps. I got the idea on YouTube to add bolt on retractable straps. Being bolt on, they stay on the trailer. They hook up fast, unhook fast and seem to hold up well. I installed a stainless steel loop on the far side to hook the strap to, and then I went about looking online for the straps.
15 days containment I’M FINE THANK YOU
I ordered and received the first set, not long enough, the kayak is small… I thought 4 ft strap would be enough, nada, probably need 8 -10 ft, so I called the company, DC Cargo and told them I needed a longer strap, everything else the same. A week later I got in a blue, instead of black, regular instead of retractable and e-track instead of bolt on in the mail. I was so ticked off. So I had to send both sets back. So I found a 9 ft one at E-Trailer.com and got it ordered. I’m waiting for it to come in now to finish this project. Everything went so smooth until the strap deal, but there is always a hiccup in any project.
We are all in this COVID 19 stuff together, supply runs or food runs are the highlight of my days. I’ve been able to get some things done around the house. Stay at home and stay safe, we’ll get through this…”this too shall pass.” Like you I’m really missing the car shows and car events. Check on your friends and family, make sure they are good physically and mentally! til next month… Terry terrymasonbarfield@gmail.com Facebook: Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show Hear a demo of the Hot Rod Show on Facebook by searching for Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show” and “Like Us” while you’re there or search for “Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show” on YouTube.com for the show demo or contact Terry @ 228.669.8122

Our Favorite Candy This Easter I saw an interesting video about one of my favorite Springtime treats, Peeps. The little known facts about the marshmallowy goodness synonymous with Easter made me think about all the holiday candies that have remained beloved in our lives throughout the years. By Candy Cocktail Everyone has their favorite; from gummy bears to salt water taffy, lollipops to candy buttons, Nerds to Moon Pies, and of course the undeniably perfect duo of chocolate mixed with peanut butter. Below I have compiled a list of some of the most interesting confectionary facts. Candy corn has become synonymous with Halloween. The yellow, white and orange colored American favorite was invented in the 1880s. The candy was originally named “Chicken Feed” for its resemblance to the corn fed to chickens. It was manufactured by the Goelitz Confectionery Company. The Goelitz Company was founded in 1898 and while that original name may not sound familiar, it is the company now known worldwide as Jelly Belly. Jelly Belly started making gummy bears and their tiny, flavorful jelly bean was developed in 1965. The annual production of candy corn in the United States is 35 million pounds, or almost 9 billion pieces of candy. That is equal to 15,000 metric tons of candy corn. Among the gum balls, rock candy and jawbreakers, perhaps the coolest candy is Pop Rocks. The candy is not only particularly fun to eat, it has an interesting creation story too. The scientific sweet’s concept was patented by General Foods Research chemists Leon T. Kremzner and William A. Mitchell in 1961. Although it was not offered to the public until 1975. The revolutionary popping candy contains pressurized carbon dioxide that shatters when pressure is applied. Not to worry, the urban legend of your stomach exploding when pop rocks are eaten with soda has been thoroughly tested and there is no truth to the rumor. Pop Rocks actually contain less gas than a half can of soda, so they are safe to eat. Peeps have become as iconic for Easter as eggs and the Easter Bunny. Prior to 1953, it took 27 meticulous hours to make just one Peep. However, the recipe has remained almost completely unchanged since then. Around 5.5 million Peeps are made, or “hatched” each day, which equals two billion colorful Peeps each year. If you were wondering which pastel colored candy is the favorite, it is the yellow Peep. Several non-edible Peeps products are available too, including Peeps pillows, clothes, games, candles, crafts and while it is not available for purchase, there is even a 400 pound non-edible Peep. Each New Year’s Eve Pennsylvania holds Peepsfest, a two-day festival celebrated with the annual Peep “Chick Drop.” The giant chick, measuring 4 feet 9 inches tall, descends at 5:30 p.m. on December 31 to commemorate the New Year. In addition to Peeps, one of my childhood Easter favorites were the panoramic sugar Easter eggs with scenes inside. The hollow Peekaboo eggs were entirely edible, made purely of sugar with frosting details and idyllic, miniature Easter scenes with animals displayed inside. The old fashioned eggs are now a lost art, although the Victorian era eggs are widely described in 1910. There is a lack of historical background available about the sugar eggs, however they could be inspired by the Faberge Imperial Eggs made famous by Russian royalty at the turn of the century. While the eggs closely resemble Faberge eggs, they are thought to be of Ukrainian or Italian origin. Conversation Hearts, also known as Candy Hearts, are the classic Valentine’s Day snack. The colorful hearts with messages like “Kiss Me” printed on them, have been in distribution since 1847, making them one of the oldest candies. Their origin began when a Boston pharmacist created a lozenge-making machine which was also America’s first candy-making machine. In 1866 the machine creator’s brother devised a way to press words onto the lozenges. Huff post described an unverified legend which claimed that Union soldiers in the Civil War carried around Necco wafers, as they were then known, and the practice of sending romantic letters to soldiers sparked the idea for conversation hearts. In 1902 the lozenges received their shapes, such as hearts, baseballs and horseshoes. The ‘Be Mine’ hearts were a hit and today the company claims to produce around 100,000 pounds of Sweethearts every day. According to Oldest.org, the first chocolate bar astonishingly dates all the way back to 1866 when Joseph Fry created the Chocolate Cream Bar in England. The Chocolate Cream Bar was the first massproduced and widely available candy bar. Of course no list of candy favorites would be complete without the inclusion of the candy maker from America’s only town of chocolate; a popular tourist attraction and creator of many of the most beloved candies, The Hershey Company. Although Nestlé debuted its milk chocolate bar 25 years before Pennsylvania’s own Milton S. Hershey, his milk chocolate bar was the first mass-produced chocolate in the United States in 1900. Prior

to 1900, most of the world’s chocolate was made in Europe, especially Switzerland. Hershey’s Kisses were first manufactured in 1907. A remarkable fact cited on Wikipedia described how the production of Hershey Kisses was briefly interrupted due to the rationing of aluminum foil in 1942. The machines were re-purposed to create military chocolate D ration bars for the soldiers fighting in World War II. According to military historians, these chocolate D rations served two purposes; to be a morale boost and give a high-energy, pocket-sized emergency ration. The ingredients of the four ounce ration bars were a blend of chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, skim milk powder and oat flour containing 600 calories. By the end of World War II, Hershey's had produced more than 3 billion D ration chocolate bars for our troops. H.B. Reese Candy Company should sound familiar. Even though it is now owned by The Hershey Company, it has been the home of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup since 1928. As one of the most well-loved and iconic candies in America, the nutty cups were created in 1922 by H. B. Reese, who worked on Milton Hershey’s dairy farm in 1917 to support his 16 children. Reese eventually worked in the Hershey chocolate factory that inspired him to start making his own chocolates. In the 1960s The Hershey Company acquired Reese’s company. Pez Candy was invented in Vienna, Austria as an alternative to smoking in 1927. Pez stands for the German word for peppermint, PfeffErminZ, which did not come to America until 1952 when the dispensers were given cartoon heads and marketed to children. Bazooka Bubble Gum popped onto the candy scene in 1947. The gum became best known for its mini comic strips. The adventure stories of their icon Bazooka Joe were added to the comics in 1953 and lasted until 2012, when brain teasers replaced the funnies. Before they became one of America’s favorite candies, M&M’s were simply the Americanized version of a popular British candy. The candy-coated chocolate pieces were actually copied from Smarties in 1941. Frank C. Mars, whose name you surely recognize from Mars Candy Incorporated, got the idea when he saw soldiers eating Smarties during the Spanish Civil War. Additionally, M&M’s have expanded their products with an array of items and flavors featuring their iconic talking characters, like the famous addition of the blue M&M. Peanut butter M&M’s have been around since 1991. Today, fans of sugary deliciousness can delight in their own custom candy, from companies that can customize packaging or even the candy itself, like M&M’s, which creates their candy with the option of customized messages or special photos. The most controversial of candies, but the one we all played with as children, has to be candy cigarettes. The almost exact candy replicas came onto the American dessert market in the 1930s, before cigarettes were considered a health concern. They were immensely popular until the 60s when we learned about the harmful health affects of cigarettes. This infamous candy is even banned in many countries today. Cadbury Creme Eggs, the chocolate confections made to resemble hard boiled goose eggs, are a newer Easter favorite. Fabricated in 1971, the eggs are the best selling candy in the UK between New Year’s Day and Easter, with annual sales over 200 million. Notably, the Cadbury Chocolate Company has been around since 1824. 196 years ago the chocolatier was established by John Cadbury in England as he sold tea, coffee and drinking chocolate. Lemonheads have been making people pucker up since the 1960s. The jewelry candies were the best-loved sweets from my childhood. I was snacking on candy necklaces and rocking Ring Pops as a child. Yet much to my surprise, the Ring Pop, the only lollipop made for your finger, has been around since 1979. Some candies can even bring back childhood memories. A visit to Cracker Barrel Country store offers some great vintage sweets and snacks for purchase, but if you are looking for something specific, there are now websites specializing in vintage flavors. Visit OldTimeCandy.com or GroovyCandies.com to find your favorite. From cinnamon red hots to Tootsie rolls, Swedish Fish to Pixie Stix, and everything in between, our favorite holiday sweets can give us a feeling of pure nostalgia. I think I have gathered an interesting list that would even make Willy Wonka himself proud. Wishing you all a summer full of sweetness!

Welcome back everyone!!! I hope this article finds you all safe and healthy. What a wild month it has been for everyone! Let’s start with some racing! We closed out our last article with a solid run at Whynot. The next weekend, we followed that up with a trip to Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Alabama. This track has been in business, off and on, since around 2004 with multiple different owners. The latest owner had his grand opening on March 14, 2020. One thing was made very clear when we pulled in the gates…this new guy has deep pockets!!! The facility has been totally revamped, and it definitely looks like a first-class racing organization! We drew numbers for starting positions and Chase had a lucky draw! He drew a number 2, which put us on the pole for heat number 1. There were some sure enough hotrods in the house, including the young superstar Spencer Hughes! When we found out that Chase would be sharing the front row with Spencer, I have to admit, I was nervous. When the green waved Chase and Spencer drag raced into turn 1! It looked like it was going to be Spencer with the lead from the high line off of turn 2, but Chase got a good run off the corner, and down the back straightaway, where he took command of this one! Chase continued to lead this talented field for several laps, until a caution came out and gave everyone another shot at us. There was a big hole starting to develop in the bottom of turn one and they had told us in the drivers meeting that they would be restarting us double file in the heat race! CRAP!!! This meant whoever got to turn 1 first would have the preferred line. Well he
14
MAY 2020
did it once, so let’s hope he can do it again! The #88 of Chris Smith beat Chase to turn 1 and as Chase slowed to maneuver through the rut, Spencer Hughes took another position, leaving us in 3rd where we eventually finished. In the pits, Chase and I were still convinced that we had a fast racecar, so we decided to make minimal adjustments for the feature event. That was a mistake!!! Our teammates, the Luzenbergs, threw everything but the kitchen sink at their car before the feature. We rolled off for the feature in the 3rd starting position and our buddy Jade Luzenberg was starting 8th. The hole going into turn 1 had since morphed into the Grand Canyon, and that was obviously going to be a situation for us! As the feature began, we looked competitive, but Chase had no choice but to try and drive through the big holes! His car (as well as the others) would get completely up on the 2 right side tires and then pound back down as they fought to hold onto their positions in the 17-car field! Chase was running a solid 2nd, until a caution stacked everyone up again! Once again, a restart would prove to be our doom, as our car was obviously damaged from the previous abuse! When the green flag flew again, we began going backwards, as it was obvious that Chase had his hands full just getting his car to go around the track at this point. We had fell all the way back to 8th at the drop of the checkered. However, our teammate Jade, had charged his way up to 2nd, and was getting faster as the laps ticked by! When we got to the pits, we were able to see what had caused Chase to abruptly fall off the pace! His left front shock was broken off the chassis and his front end was severely knocked out of alignment! Oh well, we learned a lot and we had a great time! The facility had standing room only, and the races throughout the night went surprisingly quick, considering the number of cars there for this grand opening! We will take what we learned and look forward to coming back to this superspeedway of dirt! We didn’t know at the time, but this race ended up being our last race until this craziness goes away! As I’m typing this article (4-17-2020), we are still under “shelter in place” orders for our whole State of Mississippi! I’m not going to get into my opinion on all of this craziness going on! I just want my freedom back SOON, and I hope you all feel the same!!! Thank you all for reading and following along! Hopefully I will have some new racing to report on before the next article is written!!! Until next time…Chavus

Todd has been in the Public Relations Department since 2014 and writes news releases, takes photos and videos, creates graphics, and works with the news media. “This is my first classic car, I bought it in 2016,” said Todd, “I really love the muscle cars from the late 60s through the 70s.” Groovy 69 is a powder blue 1969 Mustang coupe with a black vinyl top and the original 302 V8. “It's a mid-level restoration and great weekend cruiser. I enjoy letting people look at it and listening to their stories about the cars they grew up with.” Complete with a hula girl in the rear window, Groovy 69 is a perfect combination of flower power AND horse power!”
