Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Got to start off on a sad note this month, Jack Brown passed away March 19. If you didn’t know him, he was a good portion of the glue that holds a club together. His stories were always entertaining, interesting and down to earth. Jack’s love of all things involving old cars and trucks went back to his early days of watching men racing roundtrack. His monthly newsletters about the Mississippi Street Rod Association and the people he mentioned had a way of making you feel like you were there. I know I looked forward to them and included some of his stories in our newsletter. I could go on and on, but I will tell you, Jack was a mentor to me and encouraged me to stick it out.. “keep it simple, down to earth, interesting and throw in a couple of jokes every now and then, everyone loves to laugh a little.” ….. he would say. “Doin’ what we do best: Eatin’ laughin’ and playin’ cars” ……..Jack Brown The event list is growing by the day. Clubs and business/organizations want to have events that include the classic cars, trucks & hot rods. One of the most common calls I get is the “we want to have a cruise-night” or “we are holding a benefit car show” It’s no wonder there are smaller and small turnouts at some of the events you will attend this season, there’s just a lot of options to choose from… Ok time for letters, e-mail, comments and made-up stuff …. Jimbo, As I was lying in bed pondering the problems of the world, I rapidly realized that I don't really give a rat's hiney. It's the tortoise life for me! If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, and is fat. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years. A tortoise doesn't run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years. And you tell me to exercise?? I don't think so. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he'd have put them on my knees. I'm retired. Go around me. Now that I'm older here's what I've discovered : I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it. I finally got my head together, and now my body is falling apart. My

On November 3, 2012, I won my 200th trophy at the Jackson, Al. car show. My family had a 3 ft. tall trophy made for me congratulating me on my 200th "win" in car show competition. After Christmas I bought a 1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe 4 door. The car is complete down to the hubcaps! I don't know yet, but I am thinking about a Chevy S-10 truck frame with a 350 engine and 700 transmission. If any of your subscribers have a better idea on the frame set up, I would like to hear from them. I am 71 years old and in good shape but would like to go the route with as little modifications as possible. The wheel base must be 115" so wheels will be dead center of the fender wells. I thought about my own frame since the 41' frame is already boxed in from the factory. Maybe a Mustang ll front and 9" Ford rear with 325 gear.

Ted performancepb@ You don't have to be an engineer to appreciate this story. A toothpaste factory had a problem. They sometimes shipped empty boxes without the tube inside. This challenged their perceived quality with the buyers and distributors. Understanding how important the relationship with them was, the CEO of the company assembled his top people. They decided to hire an external engineering company to solve their empty boxes problem. The project followed the usual process: budget and project sponsor allocated, RFP, and third-parties selected. Six months (and $8 million) later they had a fantastic solution - on time, on budget, and high quality. Everyone in the project was pleased. They solved the problem by using a hightech precision scale that would sound a bell and flash lights whenever a toothpaste box weighed less than it should. The line would stop, someone would walk over, remove the

defective box, and then press another button to re-start the line. As a result of the new package monitoring process, no empty boxes were being shipped out of the factory. With no more customer complaints, the CEO felt the $8 million was well spent. He then reviewed the line statistics report and discovered the number of empty boxes picked up by the scale in the first week was consistent with projections, however, the next three weeks were zero! The estimated rate should have been at least a dozen boxes a day. He had the engineers check the equipment, they verified the report as accurate. Puzzled, the CEO traveled down to the factory, viewed the part of the line where the precision scale was installed, and observed just ahead of the new $8 million dollar solution sat a $20 desk fan blowing the empty boxes off the belt and into a bin. He asked the line supervisor what that was about. "Oh, that," the supervisor replied, "Bert, the kid from maintenance, put it there because he was tired of walking over every time the bell rang." Till next month… Jimbo An old woman was asked, "At your ripe age, what would you prefer to get, Parkinsons or Alzheimers?" The wise lady answered, "Definitely Parkinsons ~ better to spill half my wine than to forget where I keep the bottle."

SHOP TOOLS EXPLAINED DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

Jack Brown, 73, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at his home. Jack was born in Jackson, MS. Growing up in South Jackson, he graduated from Forest Hill High School and Mississippi College. He retired from MS Employment Security Commission and was actively involved with MS Street Rod Association.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh shit!' SKIL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Off-times used in the creation of blood-blisters. BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future, and the straight line you're cutting, becomes. VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. And if nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also excellent for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing. TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles into nicely painted dry wall. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper. BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge. TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your face and shirt, Can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms. PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part. HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate, and damage, the most expensive parts adjacent to the object we are trying to hit. UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing fingers and work clothes. Finally the Son of a Bitch!! TOOL: Any handy, near by, tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling "Son of a Bitch" at the top of your lungs. It is also, almost always, the next tool that you'll need.

Jack From the April 2012 MSRA newsletter I guess the following fits under the "what's been going on" category. It's what's been going on at my house. I finally felt good enough to try to get brakes on my street rods yesterday. About 5 o'clock suddenly three cars dove up in my driveway and four people got out, armed with tools. I recognized four members of MSRA who announced they were there to get my street rods running….and more importantly…stopping. It looked like one of those TV shows where a bunch of guys were thrashing on some cars trying to meet a deadline. For over three hours these four "angels" went over my two cars, bleeding and adjusting brakes, replacing some shoes, and some other stuff. As a result, I'm now driving…and stopping…both cars again. This is what REAL car clubs are all about. It's not numbers, or publicity or any of that. It's about caring friends who share a hobby, trying to help someone out when they most needed it. “keep it simple, down to earth, interesting and throw in a couple of jokes every now and then, everyone loves to laugh a little.” A man stopped at a local gas station and after filling his tank, he paid the bill and bought a soft drink. He stood by his car to drink his cola and watched a couple of men working along the roadside. One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on. The other man came along behind him and filled in the hole. While one was digging a new hole, the other was 25 feet behind filling in the hole. The men worked right past the guy with the soft drink and went on down the road. "I can't stand this," said the man tossing the can into a recycle container and heading down the road toward the men. "Hold it, hold it," he said to the men. "Can you tell me what's going on here with all this digging and refilling?" "Well, we work for the government and we're just doing our job," one of the men said. "But one of you is digging a hole and the other fills it up. You're not accomplishing anything. Aren't you wasting the taxpayers' money?" "You don't understand, mister," one of the men said, leaning on his shovel and wiping his brow. "Normally there's three of us: me, Greg and Matt. I dig the hole, Greg sticks in the tree, and Matt here puts the dirt back. Greg's job's been cut so now it's just me an' Matt."

The Car Show season has begun, but early on it's not for the weak! Our first Saturday Night of the Month Cruize-in began for the Coast Cruizers on Saturday, March 2. The weather was forecasted to be cold. The Coast Cruizers debated on whether or not to cancel the night, however, we decided we booked it, we were going to be there for anyone brave enough to attend. We rented three large patio heaters to try and lessen the cold and moved forward with the cruize-in. About 25 brave diehards came out and even though we didn't sell any 50/50 tickets, everyone went home with a nice goody bag for there efforts. Another diehard car event I got to attend was the 34th Annual Rod Run put on by the Singing River Street Rod Association. Singing River is one of the oldest car clubs in the state. This year they combined their show with the City of D'iberville, MS 7th Annual Regional Barbecue Throwdown & Festival. It seems we have started a Saturday morning ritual for the time being… heading to Hardee's for breakfast and enjoying their biscuit and gravy. That is the way we started our track to the Rod Run. The day was cold and rainy so the smells and the warmth of the fast food joint were welcome. There is always a long line on Saturday morning. It seems after you've waited in line for ten minutes you would know what you want! It seems some folks wake up when the person behind the counter says “May I help you”? It sure seems that way sometime. On this morning a nice older lady fit the profile…didn't know what she wanted and didn't appear to begin thinking about it until asked. “A bless her heart” goes here! Finally deciding on what she wanted and given the total she now precedes to start digging through her purse to find the money. (Didn't you know you were going to have to pay? A second “bless her heart” goes here.) Anyway, it bugs me when people are inconsiderate of other people's time. After breakfast it's back out into the cold and wet as we head to D'iberville for the Rod Run. The annual Rod Run normally draws about 150+ cars, however, the cold and wet put a damper on attendance this year with only about 65 cars. You could tell that even more folks than the 65 came without their cars. Considering the weather, I thought it was a pretty good turn out. The rain had stopped for the moment; we made our way around looking at the cars that made the event. For only about 65 cars, they had some good looking Hot Rods!

Along with the car show was the Regional Barbecue Throwdown which made the air come alive with tremendous smells, plus the county fair type atmosphere with carnival rides and vendors. The combination is a winner I think for the future. All this show needs is a break with better weather. Now I'm excited for the Tri-State Bar B Q Festival Car Show in Dothan, Alabama on April 13th. Along with the car show there is $10,000 on the line for the best barbecue, so you know there has to be some great eating coming with that kind of money up for grabs. The Hot Rod Show has been booked to play so it's also road trip time. I smell a great adventure, a full stomach and a great 17 FOREVER column coming. Also another show I'm looking forward to in April is the 16th Annual Camellia City Car Show in Slidell, LA. It's about a 300 car show and they always have cool cars and a lot of fun. That show is put on by the Coastal Cruisers Car Club. The 2013 Car Show season is underway! Oh boy! Time to start deciding which car shows and where you're going to be heading this season. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you are going to have a blast! Heck, planning and prep are just about as much fun as going. Anticipation…as Carly Simon sang about… Get your Hot Rod out of the garage, wipe the winter dust off of it and enjoy that 17 FOREVER…Hot Rod state of mind!

The Badge of Gratitude By Jay Hellwig I had the priceless opportunity to travel with Zig Ziglar all over the nation. I learned many things from my relationship with this great man, but one of the most prolific and valuable life lessons he taught me was to have a heart of gratitude. If you're a fan of Zig Ziglar's, you know he often boasted of his “Wall of Gratitude.” The first prominent wall when you enter the corporate office, it is filled with beautifully framed pictures of twenty-six women and men that influenced his life substantially. At the top of the wall are his mother, his wife (“The Redhead”), and one of his daughters that passed away at the age of just forty-two. Also included are the dear Christian sister who led him to Christ, his first-grade teacher (who brought his lessons to his home when he was extremely ill), his first employer, and several mentors and friends, including Dr. Kenneth Cooper, Mary Kay Ash, Mary Crowley, Bernie Lofchick, Dr. W.A. Criswell, and others. Mr. Ziglar would often say that without these people in his life he would not be Zig Ziglar. His heart of appreciation for others and the sacrifices they made to help him impacted his life and mine! One way that gratitude was demonstrated in Zig's life occurred when he saw military personnel. Every time we would see a service person in uniform he would stop, shake their hand, and say in his booming Southern drawl, “Thank you for your service.” It didn't matter where we were or what we were doing, he would always take the time to thank them. This practice was especially evident in airports. As a busy hub for both Mr. Ziglar and soldiers to get to their many destinations, their destinies would often cross paths in the congested concourses, terminal aisles and crowded gates. As we walked through security, waited in restaurant lines, even walked close to the restroom-no matter where, or when-Mr. Ziglar would stop and stick out that faithful hand and thank those who served our great nation. Even if we were close to being late for a flight (which was rare-he was a punctual man), he stopped, looked countless men and women in their eyes and thanked them for protecting our freedom! After watching Mr. Ziglar do this dozens and dozens, if not hundreds of times, I began implementing it into my own life. He was so genuine as he spoke to them. He didn't reach out because he had to, but because gratitude was in his heart. It was who he was. Serving as Mr. Ziglar's personal assistant was a great honor and it was almost impossible to be around him and not be changed. I watched his sincere approach to gratitude and saw how it made

him even greater. I decided I would work on the gratitude in my heart. I started by thanking soldiers every time I saw them. A time soon came when I was taking my son to see my family in Georgia on a special trip for his third birthday. It was a great day, and he was quite excited, as this was the first time we had flown together without his mama-just dad and son. As we maneuvered through the airport, holding hands, I went about modeling my new Zig-inspired habit of greeting those in uniform, “Thank you for your service.” And so it went-every time we saw one in uniform, my gratitude was released. I thought to myself, “There are a lot of soldiers today at the airport!” My son soon began with a string of endless questions only a three-year-old can ask: “Why are you talking to so many people? Why are we stopping so much? Why are you thanking all these people?” Soon I stopped to explain the sacrifice of these heroes and our military families who endure great hardship for the liberty of our nation. Since I was traveling with a young child, we were able to board the plane first and we had seats fairly close to the front of the plane. I was sitting next to the window and my son was sitting in the aisle seat. Actually, he was standing up in the seat greeting the passengers with a smile as they entered. Soon a gentleman in his uniform walked in. As he passed, my three-year-old with his sweet young voice looked up at him with his thick tongue elocution and declared, “Thank you for your service!” The soldier, gray haired, a bit weathered and sure to have seen several tours of duty-our hero-stopped. He turned around, looked at my son and pointed his finger directly at Evan, and said, “And you're the reason I do it.” Then he did what could only be written in the best of Hollywood's movie scripts. He ripped off a badge on his shoulder - that proud Army emblem-and he handed it to my young son. My bright-eyed boy looked up at him and everyone on the plane started clapping. It was a powerful moment that transformed the atmosphere in that plane. As I was seated, watching this exchange occur, I knew it was a moment of greatness. One of those moments we would remember forever. I hugged my boy and told him how proud of him I was for his grateful heart. Today, as I miss my dear mentor, I'm reminded how his rich lessons, lessons he lived out loud every day, now live on. Because of Mr. Ziglar's heart of gratitude, I was able to incorporate this practice into my life, impacting my children. I am grateful for Mr. Ziglar and his great love for God, family, and his country!

We were in a state of shock running as fast as we could toward the accident scene. Two of the rescuers had a fire extinguisher. It didn't slow them down any. There was a path cut through the cornfield straight to the scene. The car was completely wrapped around a tree. Parts were strewn everywhere in all directions. The dragster was smoking. Dave was motionless in the cockpit. I was terrified! Things were moving more slowly now. We needed to get him out of the car, but we must not injure him further. We were talking about what we should do, when all of a sudden Dave moved and yelled out “What was my time?” We all looked at one another. He proceeded to try to climb out of the car on his own. He couldn't. His leg was broken. Several of us assisted and got him out of the seat and onto the ground. Now he realized how much pain he was in. I don't know who did it, but someone called an ambulance. The drag strip had limited emergency equipment but we had Dave sitting on a board when the ambulance arrived. As they were loading him into the ambulance, our driver yelled out, “Fix 'er up boys, I'm gonna run her next week.” He was serious! Here is what happened. The year was 1962. We were racing a front engine slingshot dragster that we built ourselves. The crew consisted of Dave “Dude” Coulter (he sustained his duck tails, mutton chop sideburns, jeans, t-shirt, and boots look beginning in the 60's, and up and until the day he died), Dan “Duck” Doster, Steve “Scooter” Getty, Dick “Lil Dickie” Brannon, and myself. The consensus among us was that we were much more talented and capable builders than anyone else.

“Dude” was the driver because he was the bravest, had the most skills, or had the least sense. We were all heavily involved. As Dave was making his pass down the drag strip the parachute failed to open. He grabbed the hand brake and the handle broke off and cracked two of his ribs. Careening out of control the car skidded and rolled sideways, taking him soaring into a cornfield at the end of the strip. The car came to an abrupt halt when it hit a tree, and the frame of the dragster wrapped itself completely around the tree. BAM! The parts flew everywhere and smoke and steam filled the air. It was a mess at the end of that old runway. He sustained a broken ankle, a fractured pelvis, broken wrist, and the two fractured ribs. “Dude” was being taken away on a stretcher begging us to leave and get busy on the car, because he wanted to drive it again next week. That rail dragster could have never been repaired. It was scrap. “Dude” was known for his ability to turn a wrench and for his colorful vocabulary. He could string swear words together into sentences, and did so constantly. They were not sentences that made much sense or used correct structure, but this was how he communicated. I am unable give you any examples here. You will have to use your imagination. He was a saint in his heart, however, and he was admired throughout the area. He passed away several years ago, and he is missed by many, many friends. Racing in those days was unsophisticated to say the least. We had no fire suits or safety equipment to speak of. Helmets were in use, but they were certainly not the quality of todays. We bought used tires and parts from the junkyard. Those cars ran fast though, and most of the time ran well. We took pride in our work and our results showed it. The megabuck teams of today don't reflect the true roots of drag racing as we knew it in its early days. It took guts to climb behind the wheel of those babies. Racing isn't a sport that only uses one ball! Kent Fuller used to say: “ No belts, no helmet, no goggles…plenty of stupid!” Ah yes, I had an abundance of stupid in my younger days. Some say I still do. Gotta Cruise ! Cubby

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. Spring is here and the theaters keep warming up with blockbuster after blockbuster. Living on the 3rd Coast in a small town/market keeps the cool Indie films from screening locally. Like I have said before, I'm no snob. I will watch any film that fits my schedule and peaks a bit of interest. My first review fits my snobless creed just right! Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson was a bit of a thrill ride and a great idea for a new bread of family film. An alternative to the usual family flick the Rock has made lately and I think it paid off. Dwayne plays a family man who is faced with a serious situation with his son. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh and written by Waugh and Justin Hayth, this movie is rated pg-13 and times out at 112 minutes. Rocks costar is Susan Surandon who plays a hardline D.A. who has political plans for a bigger pay scale. When his son is arrested for drug trafficking and is set up by a childhood friend, Johnson steps in and tries to make a deal with Surandon's character that will keep his son from "sntiching" on his drug connection. Surandon is never satisfied with Rocks attempt to enter the crime underworld, with the help from one of his construction company's employee who is a drug felon and strings him along with more promises to release his son. Her narcissistic self serving political climber no heart is played with steely perfection from a professional actress who brought everybody's game up. Sure, the usual car chases etc. and a Hollywood ending did not keep me from enjoying this dysfunctional family real life drama. I give this Dwayne Johnson vehicle, pointed in the right direction. 6 oUt of 10 pics. If always been told I need to see more comedies so I broke down and pulled my Harley up to my local fav movie house, the grand in Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;iberville Ms. and got a ticket for Identity Theft. This big comedy beatdown stars Jason Bateman and Mellissa McCarty. Directed by Seth Gordon, written by Craig Mazin and Jerry Eeten, this funny film rolls in at 111 minutes. The subject of this script isn't new but is a real life problem that we all have suffered through but it never seemed this funny! (I had my personal info stolen from a park and pay in the big easy a few months ago but didn't quite see the humor in it but that's why I leave the comedy script world to the pros.) I have always enjoyed Jason Batemans everyman characters who always seem to go to any means possible to get a problem solved. Being type casted isn't all bad. Job security is a good thing nowadays and he has no problem holding down the job of straight man to feature film new comer Mellissa McCarty. She is a perfect foil to Jason's straight family man in financial meltdown. Mellissa is a real funny actress with good comedic timing and no fear when it comes to going out of the box to be funny. She reminds me of a female John Belushi. Sure, she seems to play the same role in all her co-staring projects and I don't blame her. The checks cash and the zeros keep multiplying. She is a physical comedian and takes a beating but brings the laughs no matter how stupid and ridiculous she has to be. I hope her career last longer than our favorite Blues brother. I think she has the chops and will shine when she has done enough slapstick gross out to afford her some bittersweet drama that shows her serious side. John Belushi tried and failed with the ill fated dramadie Continental Divide but something tells me she might be in it for the long hall. The script is full of funny scenes, sight gags, physical comedy that is propelled by Batemans need to capture a person that has stole his life, income and job security while living the high life on his bill. Tracking down this thief with a heart of...uh...gold.. commodities and all his credit card info, bank accounts is hilarious. Everything that could go wrong does and the script cruises along and doesn't ware thin like many broad comedies. I don't want to give too much away but there is a plot twist that you see coming but takes a pleasant detour and makes this a notch above most modern comedies. even the ending has a bump that makes you guessing what the outcome

will be for our family man who has had enough and takes revenge on his nemeses only to learn a lesson in compassion that puts a different kind of smile on your face. This comedy with grit gets 6 out of 10 pics. I have had many request to bring back my personal classic movie/dvd feature so I will give my "come on tome cruise, really" section a rest this month and review a movie I have watched so many times I should own stock in the production company! This is a little known movie that was an important Hollywood release from 1980 is titled Times Square. Anyone who knows me including family, friends, ex wifes, neighbors, band members etc. will role there eyes and run for the hills when I start a dialogue about my favorite chick flick of all times! The reason I fill this film is important and should be recognized as a classic is personal, but I'm not the only fan and at one time this underloved ground breaker. It is the first punk rock themed major Hollywood release. Times Square stars walk on and first movie actress Robin Johnson, Trini Alvarado and everybody's favorite rockin transvestite Tim Curry. Directed by Allen Moyle, written by Moyle, Leanne Unger and Jacob Brackman. Its rated R and has a running time of 111 minutes. Its produced by world famous music producer/film mogul Robert Stigwood. He was a mover and shaker in the entertainment world and managed many major bands back in the day. His major success in the film world is Saturday night fever. I record breaking classic that brought dico music and lifestyle to a fever pitch around the world. that's what is so interesting about T.S, because this was the punk rock lifestyle flagship movie that sank without a ripple. Little known and critically panned, this story of two girls running from their family and friends in dirty, grimy pre-Disney New York was way ahead of it's time. This is the first major release to feature seminal punk, new wave music and showed a lifesstyle that might seem common fare now but outraged the status quo and paved the way female rockkers and street punks the world over. Too bad nobody saw it! The story is simple and has been told a million times. Two young teenage girls runaway from their unsatisfying lives to find comfort in punk music, radio dee jays (remember them?) and squatting NYC style before it was safe to be in the big apple after sundown. One girl ran from her famous, over bearing, rich politician pop who's platform was to clean up Times Square and the other comes from the streets and becomes a defacto mom, friend and street life guide that takes both main characters to hell and back. It took forever to get a dvd copy (remember them?). This movie did small box office but when I got my copy I was so excited to hear the commentary from the director and star Robin Johnson. This was a snapshot love letter to the New York city of old. The director used to live in the city when it was dangerous, sticky and was a haven for artist, rockers, bums and the rich. The city was cleaned up in real life but that's why this film should be recognized. Its like a grainy time capsule that shows where punk music, street life, and the rich mix it up in a melting pot and that's were true and original art can flourish. The script is week but rings true. The girls run away, only to find their redemption through music poetry and art. It might sound a bit old hat but this is where the best and most original music was born. Bands like the Ramones, Dead Boys, even Blondie and the Talking Heads, all went to the streets out of necessity to rule the world. The only problem was that they were way ahead of the times and it took some of them 30 years to get their due. Times Square will probably never get its due. The budget was small. The actors made up their costumes and winged it on a shoestring. But that is what makes true and original art. Do yourself a favor and watch this teenage Thelma and Louise with a bad ass sound track and redemption for all young runaways who find their true calling through rock and roll. The coolest thing I found out with my dvd was that David Johannson was a vocal/lifestyle coach for Robin Johnsons punk street poet character and makes the original songs come to life. Take a listen to my favorite movie original Damn Dog and get ready for real street music late 70's style. If this movie was written and released today it would probably be a Disney backed mega hit starring some pop star and make it big. That's the irony I love about this box office bomb. This movie is the exact same script as Saturday night fever which made millions. Robin Johnson was being groomed to be the female John Trvolta. Trin Alvarado was already a semi famous child actor and Tim Curry was big marquee name but the ticket buying public was not ready for this type of music and lifestyle. Bands like the Cure, Roxy music (my fav!) were also featured on the soundtrack. How could this have been ignored? The leather jacket, spiky hair thrift store fashion was way too

much for suburbia in 1980. Next time you go to your local mall, look around. The music these bands were playing will be in the background. All the kids walking around are wear this type of clothing. Great bands like Green Day, Nivarna are selling millions of product. Housewives and even your grandma has a spiky punk hairdo and wears pink inspired clothing that would have been banned in the 70's early 80's. Trust me, I'm a first generation punk rocker and would not be let into restaurants, clubs etc, because I had a biker jacket on. The public hated the music, look, and would take it out on you. Police would arrest you and hassle you because you had a sex pistols cassette playing in your car. Things were way different back in the day. This movie painted a freeze frame punk view of the world when the world was not ready. The world has caught up and has embraced this lifestyle so I thinks its time to embrace this movie. Its simple, raw and direct, just the reason punk rock was and is so important. It stripped the music down to what it was meant to be. Cut the fat and excess and let it true rock and roll life and breath. I give this seminal punk flagship movie 9 out of 10 pics. Three bulls heard via the grapevine that the rancher was going to bring yet another bull onto the ranch, and the prospect raised a discussion among them: First Bull: "Boys, we all know I've been here 5 years. Once we settled our differences, we agreed on which 100 of the cows would be mine. Now, I don't know where this newcomer is going to get HIS cows, but I aint' givin' him any of mine." Second Bull: "That pretty much says it for me, too. I've been here 3 years and have earned my right to the 50 cows we've agreed are mine. I'll fight him till I run him off or kill him, but I AM KEEPIN' ALL MY COWS." Third Bull: "I've only been here a year, and so far you guys have only let me have 10 cows to "take care of". I may not be as big as you fellows (yet) but I am young and virile, so I simply MUST keep all MY cows." They no sooner finished their big talk when an eighteenwheeler pulls up in the middle of the pasture with only ONE ANIMAL IN IT: the biggest Son-of-Bitch bull these guys had ever seen! At 4700 pounds, each step he took toward the ground strained the steel ramp to the breaking point. First Bull: "You know it's actually been some time since I really felt I was doing all my cows justice, anyway. I think I can spare a few for our new friend." Second Bull: "I'll have plenty of cows to take care of if I just stay on the opposite end of the pasture from HIM. I'm certainly not looking for an argument." They look over at their young friend, the 3rd bull, and find him pawing the dirt, shaking his horns, and snorting. First Bull: "Son, let me give you some advice real quick. Let him have some of your cows and live to tell about it." Third Bull: "Hell, he can have ALL MY COWS. I'm just making sure he knows I'm a bull!"

Restoring a Corvair Text Provided by MCC Member Mike Martin In the late 1950's the American car buying public was becoming more attracted to the rear engine, rear wheel drive Volkswagen Bug (Beetle). General Motors Corporation felt that there was a marketing and profit opportunity in producing a economy/compact car to compete with the VW Bug as well as the Ford Fairlane, Plymouth Valiant, and Rambler American. The work on the Corvair design began in 1956 and the first vehicles came off the line in the Fall of 1959 as a 1960 model. The first year GM offered only two 4 door models. In the years to come they would offer 2 door vehicles, a station wagon, a van and a convertible. The car featured an air cooled rear engine rear wheel drive setup, all of this new to the American public. The rear engine design offered packaging and economy advantages with a flat passenger floor, no need for power assists and offered, according to GM, improvements in ride quality, traction, and braking balance. Power came from a 140 cubic inch air cooled 6 cylinder flat (opposed) engine situated in the rear of the car. The trunk was in the front. Sales exceeded 200,000 units for the first six years. In 1965 Ralph Nader wrote a book "Unsafe at Any Speed" which stated that the handling characteristics of the Corvair made them unsafe in certain driving conditions. One result of this book was a drop in Corvair sales to only 100,000 units in 1966. GM made changes to address Nader's contentions but the damage had been done. A study done by Texas A & M in 1972 concluded that Nader's assertions were untrue and that the Corvair had no greater potential for loss control than any of its then competitors. Corvair production ended in 1969 with a total production of 1786243. The great majority of these cars have fallen victim to the crusher as there certainly seems to be very few on the road today. One Corvair that has been saved from the crusher is a 1963 model owned by MCC members Skip and Judy Blackburn who live at the Reservoir in Rankin County. Skip owns Blackburn Dental Labs. Skip's brother had owned a Corvair "back in the day" and Skip had always had a fond remembrance on that long ago car. One day down in Rankin County Skip saw a Corvair that was for sale. He talked with the owner, struck a deal and brought the car back to his home. A friend mentioned that MCC member does some classic car restoration as a hobby. Skip and Mike talked and it was decided that a full restoration would be done on what is now a pretty rare car. The car was pretty rough but rust, the most critical problem in these old cars, was not a too bad a problem. The car was chemically stripped and any rust areas were sandblasted or replaced with new metal. The car was primed with epoxy primer before all panels were worked to a dent free state.

The car had been completely dismantled and most all subsystems were replaced including the suspension, brakes, gas tank, all chrome and stainless trim, the entire interior, muffler, wiring harness, etc. The car was painted in a really nice red color (white interior). The car was completely insulated with Dynamat insulation and the original AM radio was sent off to have new AM/FM components were installed. The car is now very nice. This small economy compact is now a really rare car. Look for Skip and Judy driving their Corvair to some MCC events.

Back in 2011, he and his brother were having a conversation about Speedy's divorce and instead of grieving about it, they decided to throw a party to celebrate it. His brother told him, “You need to just get back to basics!” thus the Back to Basics name was born. After talking with friends that wanted to bring their custom rides to show off at the party, they decided to turn it into a car show. The first B2B car show was held on Valentine's day (oh the irony!) 2011, at Top Shelf hockey arena in Youngsville, Louisiana. It was a huge success bringing in about onehundred, eighty-nine registered vehicles. Speedy knew that he had started something big and began immediately planning for the next show. This year, Back to Basics was held on February 2, 2013. The show was originally planned to be held at Amazing storage in Broussard, Louisiana, but due to the massive amounts of rain we had been having in the area and the huge response, Speedy decided to find a larger venue. After talking to the owners at several possible locations, he was finally approved to have the show at East Bayou Baptist church on Kaliste Saloom road in Lafayette, Louisiana. When I asked Speedy if he thought changing the location effected the show attendance he said, “no, I think it brought more awareness to the show, and brought in even more people!”

“The church made announcements that there was going to be a car show in the parking lot, and from that announcement it brought people from the church to our show as well!” Back to Basics car show had about two-hundred, eighty-nine registered vehicles. Speedy told me that the number was up one hundred percent from 2011! One of his favorite awards at the show was a people's choice award that he gave to a little boy named Brayden. He won it for a super cool motorized police car. Speedy enjoys giving back, and a portion of the proceeds from his car

show and a golf tournament that he also hosts, benefits an organization called Healing for Heroes. This organization utilizes service dogs to help wounded veterans to live a normal life. The money raised at these events helps to pay for training for the service dogs. Next year, Speedy and his staff of fifteen family and friends are planning a huge, two day event which will include a cruise in. He is in the process of speaking with owners at several new locations because East Bayou Baptist church won't be able to accommodate a two day show next year, due to sunday services. Speedy would also like to bring in some service dogs from Healing for Heroes to demonstrate to the spectators. Dirt Track Memories by: Larry Dunham Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. It's 1949 and Monsanto Chemical Co. exploded down in Port Arthur, TX. The blast was so big that a propeller off the ship went clear thru a grain tower about 50 feet up from ground level. The imprint looked like it had been painted on. My former commander in the 15th Seabees (Okinawa 1945-6) called me in Lynnwood, CA. and offered me a job running a maintenance crew. At the time I'm working for Northrop A/C as Senior Buyer, Cockpit Electronics. So, I jumped in my 46 Ford (see photo) and head for my apartment at the Slauson Hotel, on Slauson Blvd. Huntington Park, CA. At this time, I 'm hanging out at “The Clock” drive in due to an interest I had in this “Darlin Child” who worked there. Cheryl was her name, and believe me, I sure didn't like to leave, but, “Bob” Callahan my C.O. was a good friend and was offering $750.00 a month! Money talks, and B.S. walks, so me and my “Red Wagon” headed for Port Arthur, TX. The 46 was maroon and gorgeous, but I called it my “Red Wagon”. In those days a favorite drinking song went like this: Around the corner came a little Red Wagon, one wheel off and the axle draging, telling you now you better quit drinking, or your going to die! I check in with Bob, get introduced to my crew (about 12 guys) and my Foreman over the crew was named Danny Burke. Danny had 1947 Ford Convertible, and during the week came over to me and asked “ever do any racing?” “The drag strips at Santa Ana, CA.” I replied. “I'm getting 2 midgets to run Playland Park Saturday night, and I could use some help” Danny said. So all week, every nite I'm helping him, and he is teaching me how to set them up, and finally its Saturday morning. In back of his house is a 2 acre empty field, with an oval track made by street cars beating the grass down. The two midgets were the #4 & #5, both V-8 60 flat heads. I push Danny off in the #4 car and he takes about, 5 laps bumping and jumping all over in this vacant field. He comes in, says “get in the 5” and I'll push you off”. I take off with him pushing, it lites up, and I'm in 7th heaven! I make about 5 laps and he signals me in. I pull in, cut the switch, unhook the safety belt, and put my right hand on the header to push myself up, and blistered it bad! Those headers are real hot! We went to the track that night and, the guy who was to drive the #5 didn't show. Danny handed me a spare Helmet he carried and sent me out to qualify. I made the main, thought I was just having fun, wound up 12th at the finish of 30 laps. My e-mail pal “Mitch G.” says he thinks the guy who didn't show was “Doc” Cossie 2 or 3 time Texas midget champ. After the race all of a sudden Danny and I had lots of fans around the cars in the pits. Danny had got to the announcer and told him to tell the crowd I was a Calif. boy and never raced midgets before. While I'm standing there, loving every minute of it, this blue eyed “little Darlin” stands next to me, and I feel her elbow touching my arm, so I look down into those blue eyes and she smiles. I say “hi” were you the trophy girl? She was wearing a blue outfit, with a real short skirt and white boots. “No” she replied, “I'm a skating instructor at Playland Roller Rink, and this is my skating outfit. Her name was Wilma, and next month I'll tell you how great she was! It was a great introduction to Texas! Danny's sons Ronnie and Jackie were also very good race car drivers, and last I knew were both living in Texas. That's how I got started in Dirt Track Midget Racing. 12 years, great life, good $. (as I call it) I told Larry “It’s been outside for 2 years”! He said yes, but it’s mine now! $100.00 later the storage shed was ready. Girls the car looks like the front face of a pregnant shark, one with a cheater “push up bra”. by: Lynn Makua I turned off Clermont Blvd onto Beach Blvd. and started down the beach with the white sand glistening as the mid-morning sun shone on it. This always reminds me of Waikiki when we lived in a condo called Foster Towers. The condo was on the 6th floor, on Kalakaua Blvd which ran along the ocean, same as Beach Blvd. in Bay St. Louis, MS. My mom used to set out on the lanai (balcony) early in the mornings, and watch the planes take off from the airport, climb up to the white clouds and then disappear to the east. In those days Larry and I spent a good deal of our time at “Davy Jones Locker”. This was a famous bar under the beach in Waikiki. You walked down between the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Outrigger Hotel. When you “hit the beach' you turned left and there was a large opening tunnel going down about 10 feet, (steps of course) and you were at a bar that seated about 20, and about 10 or 15 tables with 4 chairs each. When you sat at the bar, you were looking at the deep end of the swimming pool that was part of the hotel. There were many gals who took the dare, went up to pool side, dove in, swam under water facing the bar and dropped their tops. Some guys would go down and moon us! This was usually after 5 p.m. Cousin Bono was the bartender at that time, and Uncle Blue was Chief Canoe master. Uncle Alec used to put me in the “queens seat” in the outrigger, and take us out to the surf. It wasn't a dream, but it really is gone. This circa 1946 portrait of Waikiki beachboys, taken at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel seawall, appeared on the cover of Honolulu Magazine's 1982 Holiday Annual. the jewelry selection. The next shop was “Purple Banana” a frozen yogurt store. As you walk in, they have a wall of different yogurt machines with your favorite flavors. The counter has all the extra's you put on your yogurt. Penny works the counter and will put any thing you like on your yogurt. Next store is not open yet, soon to be a specialty coffee shop. Next to that is “George's Girls Purveyors of Fine Lines”. As you walk in you will see a bed with all the beautiful sheets, pillows etc. Next door is BC Linen Apparel. They have dresses, skirts, purses that you can't find at Walmart. Now I'm thirsty and it's such a beautiful day I decide to walk over to Trapanis Eatery and sit outside and have a glass of wine. For just a moment I felt I was in Hawaii! Next to Trapanis they are planning on building “Front Street. Inn Luxury Condo Suites”. I then take a walk to North Beach Restaurant and next door they are in construction for a “Bay Town Inn & Residence”.

Back to Mississippi: It's Thursday and just a beautiful Mississippi day. I decided to jump into Precious (300 ZX Nissan) turn on my Don Ho CD (famous Hawaiian singer) and head for the Historic District in Bay St. Louis on Main St. and Beach Blvd. I pull into this little center next to Hancock bank. The first shop I go into is “The Bonner Collection” which has many beautiful things. I liked

As I'm walking back I notice a sign in front of North Beach. C & R on Colemen Ave in (BSL) is having their 6th anniversary Crawfish Cook Off on April 16th. I get back into Precious and decide to drive by Ugly Pirate and Sloppy Dog. They are on N. Second St. Umbrellas were out. Sloppy Dog has great Shane's Pizza Dog and Ugly Pirate has a great GYRO. VFW in Bay St. Louis, had a great turn out for their 1st Annual Open Car Show. Bobby and Cindy were very happy. Mike was not a happy camper. He was not allowed to bring his famous riding lawn mower! The phantom Mustang was there, and at last heard, Bobby is looking at a 1954 Studebaker. Rumor has it that the Phantom Mustang may be up for sale! Watch the classified for classics in the back pages. Sammy sold the 1940 Packard, so another 1940 bites the dust. Oh well, there is a 1940 Ford 2dr sedan that I see out my kitchen window. I survived another Atomic Blast! Who would have thought that someone could survive an atomic blast two years in a row? Well, many people did at the second annual Rats and Tatts Atomic Blast car show, in Gulfport, Mississippi. The show was held March 15th-17th at the Gulfport drag-way. Organized by Jimbo Perkins and Dennis "Crab Daddy" Landry, this event brought participants and spectators from all around the U.S. The fun officially started off Friday evening with a bang, or should I say a blast! Rat rods and hot rods formed a circle in the parking lot then they began to pump up their flame-throwers. While the flames were rising high into the air, the rods without throwers began to perform burnouts. Plumes of smoke formed from the burnouts to intermingle with the fire from the flame throwers, which created a look of a bomb just being dropped! What a way to begin a car show! Saturday morning, bright and early, people started arriving with an aura of excitement around them. They knew they were in for something huge! Vendors were selling items like vintage clothing, chain maille jewelry, parts for hot rods and delicious food. Terry Masonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hot Rod Show was at the mic making announcements about upcoming events, and played a variety of rockabilly music for the crowd's listening pleasure. Jack Miller of Kuzn Jack's pin-striping was there adding flare to people's rides and even the people themselves! Steve Kanter, manned his station on the drag way to begin the drag races. Rat rods, hot rods, bikes and dragsters began to line up on the strip to wait for their turn to burn rubber on the track. The sound was deafening, as two by two they accelerated and spun their tires, as they waited for the tree to turn green. After round one of drag racing, the rods moved on to perform donuts and burnouts for the crowd! Smoke billowed around the track and it wasn't over until you heard that loud "pop!" Watch out for flying rubber! As the day progressed, it was time for the pinup contest. Hell on Heels car club organized this must have event. After the ladies were introduced and questions asked, they stepped aside while the secret judges were making their decisions about the winners. A tattoo contest was held while waiting for the pinup results. There was a male and female winner, but best of all was a little boy who won second place. His Mother very smartly placed temporary tattoos on his arm, and the judges could not resist! After the tattoo contest, the secret judges revealed the winners of the pinup contest. Third place was Ms. Marilyn Burns, second Ms. Cherry Lou and Ms. Atomic Blast 2013 was Ms. Kayla Bernard. Each of these lovely ladies won a cash prize! Next was the awards announced by non other than Mr. Crab Daddy himself. This character turned the awards announcements into a comedic production of huge proportions! Crab, I think you have found your calling! The lights began to fade and photographers were running around trying to get the last of their shots for the day. Everyone started making their way over to the concrete staging area. They knew what was coming. It was the anticipated "Atomic Blast" that signified the end of the show. As it was in the beginning, rods formed a circle and threw flames and burned rubber until their tires blew! Spectators watched until the last tire popped and the fires burnt out. As they headed home, they knew this was one was one for the books. A "not to miss" show called Atomic Blast. ---- Staff

LEARNING HOW TO DRIVE Many of us had an older brother or sister, maybe even a parent to teach us. I remember teaching my sister who is 15 months younger than me. We would skip school and go to Ponchatrain Beach when it was closed…a perfect spot. Driving in the parking lot I knew was safe. At least she couldn't hit anyone or damage my car. My sister learned on a 1952 Chevy with three on the tree. You know…..easy off the clutch and easy on the gas. At first it was not easy. I thought I was riding a wild bull! The car jumped, sputtered and jerked. I remained calm and slowly she got better, going through the gears, starting and stopping with no problem. Once it became easy for her, it seemed like we were skipping school and even church so she could drive. My learning was a little different. Like a friend of mine once said, "The best way to learn something is to steal it with your eyes." I rode with my Grandpa a lot and watched him shift, use the clutch, talk and smoke while driving. When I was twelve I would wash his car on weekends. Living on Frenchman St. in a shotgun double everyone parked on the street in front of their home. Grandpa must have had a lot of trust in me because he would give me the keys to his car. I told him I needed to wash the tops and bottoms of his tires. He also had fender skirts that made it a must to move the car. Of course I would move the car back and forth several times learning to use the clutch. This sure was fun! On some days when I would wash the car most of our neighbors would be gone. This gave me more distance to go back and forth. Sometimes I would even make it to the corner and even once around the block. I knew Grandpa was watching because one day he said "I don't know how someone can use a 1/4 of a tank of gas washing a car" and then he smiled. As time went on, I began driving even more. One day my dad even let me drive his car but not by myself. Well, 16 came and soon I got my driver's license and my own car. I still enjoy driving especially the old cars again.

Actually it was from a card that the station used to let people know where they were at. They even had a slogan “Invite us to your next blowout”. Know your Limits - Don't plan on 500 mile days, if you haven't ridden in a month. On long trips, statistics show that on day seven, the typical long distance rider will cover about 65% of the average daily mileage on a two-day trip. This means fatigue is progressive over days throughout a multiple day trek. Plan ahead for this fact. There's nothing worse than rushing a trip and getting to see nothing but yellow lines flash by next to you. While the miles may add up, you'll have nothing but stories of fatigue to show for it. Little Tim was in the garden filling in a hole when his neighbor peered over the fence. Interested in what the cheeky-faced youngster was up to, he politely asked, "What are you up to there, Tim?" "My goldfish died," replied Tim tearfully, without looking up, "and I've just buried him." The neighbor was concerned, "That's an awfully big hole for a goldfish, isn't it?" Tim patted down the last heap of earth then replied, "That's because he's inside your stupid cat." A gas station owner was trying to increase sales. So, he put up a sign that read, "Free Sex with Fill-Up." Soon a local redneck pulled in, filled his tank and asked for his free sex. The owner told him to pick a number from 1 to 10. If he guessed correctly he would get his free sex. The redneck guessed 8, and the proprietor said, "You were close. The number was 7. Sorry. No sex this time." A week later, the same redneck, along with his brother, Bubba, pulled in for another fill-up. Again he asked for his free sex. The proprietor again gave him the same story, and asked him to guess the correct number. The redneck guessed 2 this time. The proprietor said, "Sorry, it was 3. You were close, but no free sex this time." As they were driving away, the redneck said to his brother, "I think that game is rigged, and he doesn't really give away free sex." Bubba replied, "No it ain't, Billy Ray. It ain't rigged. My wife won twice last week."
