Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo The last column to go into the magazine usually is mine. So as I try to summarize all the emails, phone calls, and things that have happened since the last issue, I’ll start off with this…. Morris Schwartz is dying and is on his deathbed. He is with his nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons, and knows the end is near. So he says to them "Bernie, I want you to take the Beverly Hills houses." "Sybil, take the apartments over in Los Angeles Plaza." "Hymie, I want you to take the offices over in City Center." "Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings downtown" The nurse is just blown away by all this, and as Morris slips away, she says to the wife, "Mrs. Schwartz, your husband must have been such a hardworking man to have accumulated so much property." Sarah replies, "Property shmoperty...the schmuck had a newspaper route." Sometimes what other people see, is not what the reality is. I know the lines above are a humorous tale about Morris, but I can see the “Aesop’s” fable here. I had a paper route long, long ago. Every day rain or shine, the “Levittown Times” truck stopped and dropped off papers. Us, “Paper Boys” would roll and fold the papers, load them into the bag attached to the handle bars of our bike and off we would go. We’d peddle around to our customers to make the deliveries. Think how many of you that are reading this can relate. Remember the interview by the Carrier Manager...and the importance of reliability, being on time, showing up no matter what the weather, collecting on Saturdays, following directions like, don’t throw my paper in the drive-way, put it behind the screen door! (better be a tip on collection day or I’ll trade that one off) Working for the things you want brings on a lot of challenges. Our car / trucks or bikes are an example of all we have learned along the way. Each of us have the idea of what we want our ride to look like.. and the motivation to reach that goal is measured by the dedication we put forth.. Clubs, civic organizations, and individuals are the backbone of many charitable causes. Are you involved? Time spent on helping your choice reach their goal is an investment that will pay big dividends in the end. For Morris it was more than a newspaper route...he was bringing you the news... This month we would like to bring your attention to a club with a very unusual name and a unusually big heart. The cover of this months MotorSports draws your attention to the importance of a VIP being accepted by a local lower Louisiana car club. Bruce & Buffy Kennedy, members of the Boneyard Kreepers, hosted an event on their property that will remind us all what a impact we can make in the lives of the people we come in contact with. The story and photos on page 14 by Denise “Neecy” Cobb will make you smile as you get a small glimpse into the day that Ryan "Poppa" Gisclair and the Boanyard Kreepers shared with a group of Very Important People.

YOUR YEARLY DEMENTIA TEST -(only 4 questions) Yep, it's that time of year again for us to take our annual senior citizen test. Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles. As we grow older, it's important to keep mentally alert. If you don't use it, you lose it! Here is a very private way to gauge how your memory compares to your last test. Some may think it is too easy, but the ones with memory problems may have difficulty. Take this test to determine if you're losing it or not. OK, relax, clear your mind and begin. #1. What do you put in a toaster? # 2. Say 'silk' five times. Now spell 'silk.' What do cows drink? # 3. If a red house is made from red bricks, and a blue house is made from blue bricks, and a pink house is made from pink bricks, and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from? # 4. Do not use a calculator for this: You are driving a bus from Mobile to New Orleans. In Mobile, 17 people got on the bus. In Pascagoula, 6 people get off the bus and 9 people get on. In Biloxi, 2 people get off and 4 get on. In Gulfport, 11 people get off and 16 people get on. In Bay St Louis, 3 people get off and 5 people get on. And, in Slidell, 6 people get off and 3 get on. You then arrive at New Orleans Station. Without going back to review, how old is the bus driver? Answers page 6

This past Saturday the 11th Jerry, Jimbo and myself went to New Orleans to look at a van for our next project for a handicapped child. It was about 4pm and everybody was getting hungry. While talking to the man that had the van he told us about a seafood café on Haynes Blvd. Now on the food channel there is a show called dinners, drive-in's and dives. This place looks like it would fall between a dinner and a dive. The name of the place is called Castnet Seafood. They have po-boys, sandwiches on toast and buns along with plates. We had the combination plate, cost was $13.50. It had ½ dozen oysters, a dozen shrimp and a big catfish fillet. It came with a salad, 2 slices of toast, and fries or potato salad. Beside the shrimp, oysters, catfish they also have soft shell crab and trout plates when in season. For you non seafood people they have a chicken plate. Some sides that you don't normally find in most place, is boiled sausage links, corn on the cob (bag of 3 ears) and turkey necks. On Tuesday the special is Breaded Veal and Macaroni dinner and Wednesday it is Spaghetti and Meatballs dinner, with a salad and bread with free drink for $6.99. They try to get all of their seafood from local fishermen so it is always fresh. When you drive up to the place there isn't a lot of parking so you may have to park on a side street. Go up to the front of the building and there is 2 doors. The door on the right is for fried foods and the door on the left is for boiled seafood. You place your order then go back out make a right turn and go through a door into the sit-down /dine in area. The place was clean and everybody was real friendly. The best way to get there is take I-10 to Read Boulevard and turn right toward the lake. When you get to the end make a right turn and go about 3 blocks. Address is 10826 ½ Haynes Blvd (504) 244-8446 Till we eat again J. R.

"Hello?" "Mrs. Sanders, please." "Speaking." "Mrs. Sanders, this is Dr. Jones at St. Agnes Laboratory. When your husband's doctor sent his biopsy to the lab last week, a biopsy from another Mr. Sanders arrived as well. We are now uncertain which one belongs to your husband. Frankly, either way the results are not too good." "What do you mean?" Mrs. Sanders asks nervously. "Well, one of the specimens tested positive for Alzheimer's and the other one tested positive for HIV. We can't tell which is which." "That's dreadful! Can you do the test again?" questioned Mrs. Sanders. "Normally we could have, but the new health care system will only pay for these expensive tests just one time." ''Well, what am I supposed to do now? " "We recommend that you drop your husband off somewhere in the middle of town. If he finds his way home, don't sleep with him." ..every Husband & wife will love this poem... I have a little GPS I've had it all my life It's better than the normal ones My GPS is my wife It gives me full instructions Especially how to drive "It's thirty miles an hour", it says "You're doing thirty five" It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it's never ever Safe to overtake It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene It lists the vehicles just in front And all those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear. I'm sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice . It fills me up with counseling Each journey's pretty fraught So why don't I exchange it And get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I'm properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in a while I could turn the damned thing off. Sent in by Ted Miller

Ting-a-ling…Ting-a-ling. Whenever I heard the sound of those sleigh bells going ting-a-ling, I knew it was the Good Humor Man. Whether you were a child or an adult, at home, at work, or on the street, the sound of those bells meant it was time for ice cream. Thinking about the Good Humor man may seem odd at this time of year, but I have never claimed to be normal. It is 13 degrees below zero outside as I am sitting here writing this. The snow in the yard is so deep it comes up to my knees. On the sides of the driveway it is level with my chest. Writing about eating ice cream bars and thinking about the summer heat is one way to keep my sanity, at least what little I have left. I think anyone (myself included) who lives above the MasonDixon line in the winter needs psychological help. Especially this winter! This story begins in 1920 when Harry Burt, owner of a Youngstown, Ohio ice cream parlor, created a chocolate coating that would adhere to ice cream. The tale is that Burt's 23 year old daughter, Ruth, thought the novelty was too messy. Burt's son, Harry Jr, suggested using a wooden stick from their Jolly Boy Suckers as a handle. Things took off from there. There are accusations that Burt replicated Christian Nelson's 1919 Eskimo Pie recipe. Nelson claims to have discovered how to coat ice cream with chocolate a year earlier than Burt. Mr. Nelson claims to have gotten the idea when a young patron in his store could not decide between ice cream and a chocolate bar. In January, 1922, Harry Burt applied for patents for his Good Humor Bar, but they were not granted because the patent office felt they were too similar to Eskimo Pie. The patents were issued when Burt, Jr. traveled to Washington D.C. with a five-gallon pail of Good Humor Bars to demonstrate the difference. It worked-his patent was approved. When granted, Good Humor's patents pertained to the equipment and process to manufacture frozen novelties on a stick, but not for the product itself. During this period, Frank Epperson started marketing frozen ice on a stick and formed the Popsicle corporation. Six months after Popsicle received its patent in August 1924, Good Humor sued Popsicle, and by October 1925 the parties settled out of court. Popsicle agreed to pay Good Humor a license fee to manufacture what were called frozen suckers from ice and sherbet products. Good Humor reserved the right to manufacture their products from ice cream, frozen custard, and the like. A Good Humor plant opened in Chicago in 1929. The Mob demanded $5,000.00 in protection money. The company refused, so the Syndicate destroyed part of the Chicago fleet. The company moved. The trials and tribulations associate with launching products in that era would put me in anything but a good humor. The Good Humor name came from the belief that a person's humor or temperament was related to the humor of the palate (sense of taste). They believed in quality tasting products. In the early days, Good Humor men were required to tip their hats to ladies and salute gentlemen. A vendor could be fired for not smartly saluting a customer or saying “Good Humor Ice Cream” instead of the proper “Ice Cream Good Humor”. While vendors were paid commission, it was not unusual for a driver to clear over $100.00 per week, a lot of money for the time. Good Humor sold its fleet of vehicles in 1976 to focus on selling its products in grocery stores. This fleet included: trucks, push carts, pedal powered vending tricycles (two wheels in front, one in rear.), shoulder boxes and even a boat. Some of this equipment was purchased by ice cream distributors and others were purchased by individuals. The trucks sold for $1000.00 to $3000.00 each.

On a side note, Schwinn turned down a request by the Good Humor company to build their bicycle carts, but Worksman, a small bicycle manufacturer in New York was already producing something similar to what they required. Worksman produced their ice cream vending trikes for 40 years. If you want one today, they can be purchased in the classic style from Worksman for $2299.00. The umbrella is an extra $119.00. It all began in 1920 at an ice cream parlor in Youngstown, Ohio. The perseverance of Harry Burt (1875-1926) enabled a company to become a huge player in the frozen confection business from then until now. It hasn't ended yet! Good Humor products are still being enjoyed by millions of lucky people… .Thanks Harry.

To book DD Thunders Band : ddthunders100@yahoo.com Wow, it's the start of a new year, 2014. It's been a cold winter down This could've been a great movie but it was still pretty good. They south, but a blazing hot movie release month. I can't believe the onslaught really pushed the envelope with this project and took a lot of flak for of top drawer movies hitting the big screen. This is one of the best winter doing it. Parents, please don't take your kids to this one thinking its cool movie seasons I can remember. So many great movie releases and they to let them watch R-rated movie, trust me. keep coming. I was excited about seeing this movie and just a little let down but still First up is a movie released in December 2013. It was the first movie I it's a strong, fast paced story. Exciting, dangerous and titillating, No pun saw this new year and it set the bar high for all to come, American Hustle. intended. I will give this buck wild ride a 7out of 10 pics. This is one of the best Movies I have seen in a long time. I ran into many people Over the holidays who came up and told me This 1970s period Piece Is a true story and stars a cavalcade of tophow much they enjoyed my column in this magazine. Thanks for all your notch actors. Director David O Russell brings back to this favorite movie support and don't forget you can email me at ddthunders 100 couple Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. You might remember this @yahoo.com. dynamic duo in the awesome film Silver Lining Playbook. Then you have See you at the matinee.. It's the best date movie of 2013 and I did not Christian Bale and Amy Adams. Wild Bales character is married to let that fact get by me. Jennifer Lawrence's character , English talking grifter Amy Adams takes See you at the matinee. Bales heart and maybe everything he owns. Bradley Cooper plays an overzealous FBI agent who wants to put a sting together and bring down corrupt politicians in mob backed Businesses. Rounding out the cast is character actor Jeremy Rener. He plays a neighborhood politician going up the ladder, doing good for his Community but maybe doing it the wrong way. I really enjoyed Jennifer Lawrence's board housewife who uses her sex appeal to bring her husband back to the fold and seduces anyone who gets in her way. Last but not least is Robert De Niro's mob boss portrayal which is spot on. I haven't been excited about a film as much as this since the 2000 classic American Beauty. I know this film will sweep all the award ceremonies coming up. Don't miss this one. I give this film my first 10 out of 10 Picks ! Here comes another big screen blitzkrieg, The Wolf of Wall Street. This is another true story rated R and directed by Martin Scorsese. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConahay, Kyle Chandler and Rob Reiner. This period peace was set in the wild 80s when Wall Street rose to great heights To be brought back down to earth from greed and recklessness. This custom build is an original 1960’s AMF pedal car that isn’t so This is a story of a man named Jordan Belford, Played by Leonardo original anymore. The body, steering wheel and the front wheels are all DiCaprio, who dropped out of Wall Street and into junk bonds. He turns that are left. The idea of the build was my brain child and the actual his misfortune around in a big way and becomes one of the wealthiest fabrication came from my father, Roy. traders the East Coast has ever seen. Jonah Hill plays his sidekick and The pedals have been removed and could not be placed back because of hapless party boy that will do anything to make a buck and have a good all the fun additions to the car. I started by getting rear Go Kart racing time. Australian actress Margot Robbie plays Belford's Second wife that slicks donated to me for the build. I painted the front and back rims pewter is beautiful Who almost tames the stock trading WizKid. Rob Riener silver to give the nostalgic look from the drag strips. The front end has a plays Belford's father who comes along, reluctantly, on the wild ride of straight bar axel, spring suspension along with custom rolled leaf springs. Fame Fortune and decadence. Kyle Chandler plays the government agent The rear end has a custom built pumpkin and ladder traction bars along out to get DeCaprio for everything he has or is going to have. with a drive shaft from front to back. There were a few original body lines I can't believe this movie was rated R. I haven't seen in trading moving that I filled to give the look of a real car. A hole was cut in the hood to along time but this might have qualified for it. I bet they had to cut around allow for the 1:6 scale model of a full blown Ford 427 drag motor to come scenes left right and center to please the censors. This is a raw in rough up through. Brackets were attached to the front to show off the beer can movie. The drug fueled parties were as graphic as you could get without gas tank that gives fuel to this gasser. That basically concludes the end of being hard-core porn. Everyone was nude in this movie, every scene had the build and time to hit the paint shop. drugs, orgies and over the-top parties. This is my big complaint about this I shot the body in primer then racked my brain on how I was going to do film. Scorsese spent way too much time on the wild parties and sex the paint scheme to make this look nostalgic and eye catching. I decided to scenes And it took away from the interesting true life plot. I had to double go with an Outrageous Ecstasy Orange Flake over Hunter Orange check the credits to make sure that Oliver Stone didn't direct this movie. It basecoat. When you walk around the car the flakes change the color of the sure came off like one of his crazy over-the-top love letters the Wall orange to a yellow and green. I chose to airbrush “Lil’ Big Shot” on the Street. But I guess it was Martin Scorsese's time to tell the story of how sides because I felt it fit the build to the tee. All the extreme details on the out-of-control these junk bond boys could get And how far they would front and back of the car are all airbrush work and not a decal. To make take the party. this piece look the way it does I love using Presta’s Spray ‘N Shine as a All things must come to end and boy did it ever for DiCaprio's quick detailer and Presta’s Fast Wax for quick protection and a fantastic character. I won't give too much way but let's just say that he didn't Keep finish. everything he learned the illegal way. I wish Corsay you would've James Schupp developed DiCaprio's character more and shown more dialogue and real life struggles that come with this type of decadence. 10 www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com FEBRUARY 2014

S

ome are in wheel chairs, most are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them.

George Bignotti went in 2013. He was one of the most successful ownermechanics ever to run the Indy 500. I believe he won it like 5 times. I’m too busy to google it and find out. After Mel Kenyon got hurt and the “roll cage” came into being. George had a Indy dirt car (called champ car by some). As far as I know he was the first to put “down bars” on the chassis. They all have them today, but this was 50 or so years ago. Andy Granatelli, last owner of the famous “NOVI” went down in 2013. He was in charge of the Paxton superchargers and to Studebaker to make them an option when you bought a new car. Johnny Mantz, a good racing friend of mine, was going to take the franchise for the country of Mexico for the Paxton blower. Johnny had the Mantz Tool Co. in Duarte, Calif. and was doing very well. He was promoting USAC Midget races at Ventura, Ca. and fell asleep at the wheel driving home at 2 a.m. and died. So Granatelli dropped the idea when that happened so they say.

It’s January, and time for a look back at some of the fun and games that went on outside the race track. Culver City was one of favorites, ¼ mile semi banked dirt, and very fast. If you didn’t turn it in the high 12 seconds you were in the semi main or consi. (that’s the consolation race for the slowest cars) If you win the consi you start last in the semi main. If you win or place 2nd in the semi you then get to run the main (starting last of course) . Now there was a “Darlin Child” named Barbara who never missed a race, and went by the nickname of “back seat Barbara”. She used to get her “amour” (always a race car drivers) to put the rear window down in his car and make love in the back seat with the traffic going by! As a side note, I was driving my 1946 Ford Convertible and she insisted I put the top down! Well, I was brought up knowing “what ever the lady wants, the lady gets.” She wound up getting married to one of the big shot tire people at Firestone Tire. I’m sure he never knew about how and why she had that nickname. Very, Very good looking girl with a fantastic shape to go with it. Last month (December) a great southern racer, Hooker Hood, died xmas eve. I knew of him slightly, only because of the track at West I’ve already mentioned in a Memphis where we ran an Saturday nights in 1949. I was living in previous article Jason Leffler, 3 Memphis at that time, and being mentored by Danny Burke, who I helped time USAC Midget champion when Pat Clancy had Danny fabricating on his 6 wheel Indy 500 car. got killed in a winged sprint car Hooker was into Modifieds and Sportsmans (always drove his own crash in 2013. Others are Bill cars). They claim “Hooker” (real first name Clarence) won more than Amick, (no relation to George 700 races! His career lasted 50 years, and in 1954 and 1955, he made 5 Amick), Kramer Williamson 63, starts in NASCAR Grand National competition in his own 1954 Olds 88`. Ernie Derr, Chris Margolin, He was 86 when he died. LeRoy Kay 67, Josh Burton, His daughter “Stormi” said he raced until he was 75 years old. At West Da le Wondergre n, Dave Memphis in 1966 he won 20 of the 22 feature events. In 1967 Hooker Richardson and last but not least, former NASCAR car owner Hal won 57 of 63 events at West Memphis in his #99 car (see photo) and in Needham. Hal was director producer of “Smokey and the Bandit”, I’ve 1968 he followed up with 48 wins. been told. He was 82. Speaking of stock cars and winning, It was 1950, I’m driving for Joe Lucy, and I’m sleeping on a army cot Dick Trickle was known as “the in a bedroll in Mark Yates shop. She checked out the showers and looked at the army cot with the bed roll on it. “You sleep there?” she asked. “Yes I grinned my reply. She walked over, sat on the cot, so I sat down beside her. I flipped on the radio and Harry James was playing “You made me love you” and as I turned around to face her our lips met, and that was the first time I wished the cot was wider. by: Lynn Makua I'm putting this down on the 2nd week of January, and things could change for the better or the worse! I can't believe the cold spell we had 17 degrees! I don't even own a pair of pants and won't buy any. I'm from Hawaii and we do not wear pants (it's a rule for us girls). So, I wore hose and my mini skirt. The coldest on record in Hawaii was 59 degrees as far as I know. Rumor has it that Crickets may close. Now I find that hard to believe! I was on my way to Sams VFW in Lakeshore,( about 2 blocks up Lower Bay Rd.) from Crickets and there were 40 or 50 cars in Crickets lot. It was play-off night for Saints & Seattle and Crickets 8x20 screen was really pulling fans in to see the game! Biggest screen I've ever seen. (and I don't come from a small town) and I do drink a little, and get around a lot! I was talking to Sam of the VFW in Lakeshore and he said he does not have a happy hour. His beer is always $2.00. He is open 7 days 12 noon till. He does have wine coolers, so that's what I have. Its Thursday and it must be Happy Hour somewhere. (That's a good name for a song!) My “Precious” (1990 300zx) is still down so I jump into Larry's Lincoln and plug in a tape and what do I hear “Glen Miller, Harry James, and the Mills Brothers”. So, I turned on 102.3 and Scott B. with his sexy voice was on so, I was all right. I decided to go to “Gabbie's “on Main St. in Bay St. Louis, ( they have happy hour Mon.-Fri. 4 p.m.-6 p.m.) but I got detoured to Tri-RBar & Grill, which used to be C & R Bar on Colemen Ave. Waveland. They have happy hour Mon-Fri 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. and on Thursdays they have 2 for 1 Hamburgers (4 p.m - 9 pm.) and 2 for 1 Cherry Bombs 6 p.m. till. I decided to have one of Robby's great burgers and a glass of Champagne. I think they are one of the only bars that have Champagne by the glass! Like I told you girls last time the two brothers (Rob & Robby) run the place and are both are single and kind of cute! Two new places in town and they are not bars! Sheri's Creole Mama Pralines, 609 Hwy 90, Waveland, MS. (next to the insurance company) Owner is Sheri George from New Orleans. She has been open since Nov. 2013. She has 15 different flavors. Her best seller is the pecans. I did not know what a Praline was! She said it was a “Southern Candy”. I will just have send some to my family in Hawaii. Sheri is also going to have gifts for each holiday & is ordering “King Cakes for Mardi Gras! Open 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. M-F - Sat. Closed , Sunday 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. 2nd place is (where I should go to, I must have gained 10 pounds going to all the Christmas party's) Forge Fitness at 129 Hwy 90, Waveland, MS. next to S& L Office Supplies. Owner Scott Grady said he has been open about 3 months. They charge $29.00 a month and no contract and a one time fee of $15.00 for a card to get in after hours. I think we now have 3 or 4 fitness centers in our town. I forgot we have a third new place in town. Lakeshore Liquor next to Crickets. Rumor has it that one of family members of Kent & Sue's Stores has it. They should be open when you read this. I think this makes the 5 or 6 liquor store in town. I am sure y'all will do your best to support all our liquor stores! I was at my favorite Mexican Restaurant El Maguy's (see ad) and I walked in Juan (the owner) had a stand showing us one of their new salad dishes. My favorite was the steak salad. They also have shrimp, etc. for $8.95. Went great with a glass of wine. Watch next month for of my old and new places! ALOHA Y’ALL PINEAPPLE misspineapple44@att.net www.CoastCruizers.com

Story & Photos by: Denise “Neecy Cobb

The Boneyard Kreepers Handing out free smiles and hugs to the willing This year, I was honored to join the Boneyard Kreeper's car club in giving the gift of smile to a special young man named Tim Cox. Tim was taken to the Cajun Nationals car show in September by his care givers from the Louisiana Special Education center in Alexandria, Louisiana. Ryan "Poppa" Gisclair, a member of the Boneyard Kreepers, was introduced to Tim and they instantly became friends. At the show, Poppa asked Tim's caregiver if he could take them for a ride in his truck. She agreed and she and Tim went for the ride of their lives. After the show, Poppa couldn't stop thinking about his new friend, so he decided that he wanted to do something special for the boy, and the school that he resided in. He talked it over with the other club members, and they decided that they would make Tim an honorary member of the club. They took a work shirt with the club name printed on it, and had his name embroidered on the front. Poppa rebuilt a trophy made out of rocker rollers that he had won for a burnout contest. He designed it to symbolized the sign language, hand sign of love. He also had a canvas printed with all of the club members rats and a photo of him and Poppa in his truck. A phone call was then made to the school and an event was planned to introduce the Boneyard Kreepers to the rest of the residents and employees. I arrived at the facility not knowing what to expect. I was warmly greeted by Mr. Richard Bushnell, the director of the program. He led me to a pavilion where upbeat Cajun music was playing. Some of the residents were already there, and the few that weren't in wheel chairs were up dancing to the music. I met so many special individuals and felt lucky to be in their presence. The Kreepers arrived with their goods and mingled with the residents and employees. Employees is really not the correct word for these people. I feel like they are family to these disabled individuals. You could see the closeness amongst them, and how much they truly loved theirs jobs. After everyone was introduced, Mr. Bushnell handed Poppa the microphone and he explained why they were there, and how much the people that he met at the Cajun Nationals show touched their hearts. He then handed out t-shirts to all of the residents and their caregivers. Then Poppa called Tim up to the front and told him that he was going to become an honorary member of the Boneyard Kreepers. He was presented with the custom embroidered shirt, the canvas and the trophy. I took one look at his face and knew he was the happiest boy there! I couldn't help but tear up. After the presentation, we were treated to a delicious lunch, of burgers with sides and desserts. Before we said our goodbyes, the Boneyard Kreepers invited the resident and the employees to attend the Rockabilly Rumble which was held on November 30, 2013.

November 30th arrived and we headed out to the Rockabilly Rumble. This event is not an average car show. It is about friends coming together to enjoy their rides, to race against each other on the grass and to be themselves. It is also held for the purpose of raising money for a cause that the Boneyard Kreeper's car club believe in. This year, they were raising money to benefit the Louisiana Special Education Center. Everyone was asked to bring a dish so no one had to purchase food. A wonderful lunch was enjoyed by all. There was so much variety, that one couldn't try everything without becoming extremely engorged! The event started off with a prayer and the pledge to the flag. A vintage fire truck was brought out for the kids, then the Grinch made an appearance. Even though he has a bad reputation, he made up for it by giving out chocolate bars to the kids. He must have not liked me because all I got was a couple of mice! After the fire truck and the Grinch made its rounds, before the main racing began, the Boneyard Kreepers took the kids from the school and their caregivers for rides in their cars and trucks. The look of excitement they had as they were getting into the vehicles was priceless. They had huge smiles on their faces that I will never forget! After a few rounds with the kids on the track, everyone began to make their way to the starting line. The flag was dropped. The first two competitors smashed their accelerators and mud began to fly! Throughout the day, announcements were made asking everyone to donate to a wonderful cause, the state school. At the end of the day, the donations were counted and the Boneyard Kreepers were proud to present Mr. Bushnell with over two-thousand dollars to benefit the kids enrolled at the Louisiana Special Education Center. Mr. Bushnell very gratefully accepted the check and said, " the check is great, but just the fact that the kids were enjoying themselves so much was plenty enough for me."

Terry Mason’s

It was early 1974, I had just turned 16 and it was time for my first set of wheels. I was excited and ready for anything that was cool. So I rode my motorcycle around town looking at used cars at various low end auto dealers. What I found was a beauty…a 1967 Cougar XR7 with 289 engine, canary yellow with a black vinyl top. Plus it had hood pins…hood pins. I think the hood pins sold me. It looked like it was doing a 100 mph sitting still. But it was worn out, 100,000 miles. Not bad shape for 100,000 but you remember how vehicles back in the day were with 100,000 miles, pretty well used up. The next thing was I had to sell my mom on helping me buy it. The cost was $995 so I needed some financing. For a 16 year old in 1973 $995 was a lot of money. Looking back on it I could have gotten a much better car and spent more than $995, but I didn’t want to push my luck on getting some wheels so my plan was spending no more than I had to. We went down to the bank, my mom introduced me to her banker and cosigned for my first loan. I’ll never forget my payment book. My first payments were ninety something dollars. I don’t remember the exact amount and I wondered how I was going to make those big payments. I added an 8-track player, a set of Keystone Classics, a set of Cherry Bomb dual exhausts and I had a pretty nice ride. The only other modification was wider rear tires and shackles to give it just the right stance. I loved that car.

When you are 16 years old, driving a cool 67 Cougar Friday and Saturday nights are as good as it gets. Gas was 39 cents a gallon and you could cruise all night for a few dollars. At 16 with the hormones flowing you felt like you were the king of the world. The Strip in Dothan, Alabama was South Oates St. from the Circle to downtown. The Burger Chef was the main hangout, a park down the street and the bowling alley on the Circle. It was amazing to see all the Hot Rods and teens out and about. There was always something new going on…someone’s new ride, a cousin visiting from somewhere, a fight, a lovers quarrel or a rival from another town trolling our grounds. You knew everyone and every car so a new car stuck out like a sore thumb. My first drag race was down 231 South. 231 South was a 4-lane and in those days you could go a few miles down the road and get in a quick drag race. Later it would become a hangout for state troopers. I was sitting at a traffic light with my girl for the night when a Chevy Chevelle pulled up beside me and began racing his motor. Back then you rode around with the windows down and the guy behind the wheel wanted to know what I had under the hood. I told him it was enough for his Chevy, that’s when he said let’s go find out. We found an almost baron stretch of highway. When we pulled to a stop, he shouted out where the finish line was as his girl jumped out of the car to give us an arm drop start. I’ll never forget how nervous I was… but I didn’t want to show I was scared for the guy I was racing or the girl that was with me. The arms went down and I hit the gas. The Chevelle got me out of the hole and I was beat until the other guy missed a shift and it was all I needed to catch him and win. He had a standard shift; I had a Merco-Matic transmission. No trophy, no money just a win. Between the hormones and the adrenalin it was awesome. My Hot Rod itch began as a youngster…looking up to my teenage brothers and that was my first fix for the Hot Rod itch. I’ll never forget it. My first of two wins in that car that night! My teenage years as a DJ for a top forty radio station and the nights and weekends in the Cougar were magical! My next car was a black 1971 Dodge Charger…it was an awesome car…but that Cougar was my first love! Next month the new Hot Rod Show trailer should be ready and I’ll take you along on the trip to the CargoMate factory in Atlanta to pick it up! Hopefully the trailer will be just like we planned it. It’s a good time to get work done on that Hot Rod out in the garage so you’ll be ready for car show season and enjoying that.. 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind! Til next month…

55 Olds Rocket 88 - $11500 (Fort Collins) Here's the deal, kids: This is a 1955 Olds Rocket 88. This is not a luxury SUV, or a maintenance-free disposable import. It is solid, has wind noise, and character. It's a Hot Rod. It rides/drives like a Hot Rod. All of these are GOOD things. It is not new, it is not pristine, but it is from Co and it's Cool! If you do not own a toolbox, have never changed your own oil, and are scared of firearms: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU. If you have been posting on facebook about how excited you are for pumpkin latte season: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU. If you get offended easy and often, whine to your co-workers, and bitch a lot: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU. If you feel you are owed anything in the world & have a bullshit job where you fail to produce: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU. If you own a bieber album, white oakleys, affliction t-shirts, or those candy-assed stitched-pocket jeans: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU. If you consider the 2nd Amendment a relic and have never owned a firearm: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU. If, however, you have BALLS OF STEEL, this Hot Rod is for you. Do you laugh at danger, and tempt fate? Have you ever uttered the words, "Hold my beer and watch this ..."? While bored at work do you pick targets at random and think, "I could hit that from here with the .22 ..."? Have any of your friends quit hanging out because you were too much fun? Do you have the number of a friend with cash memorized for bail? When you pass an abandoned flatbed farm truck along a fenceline do you consider taking on another project? Is your ol' lady really sick of the random piles of parts, greasy footprints, and empty beer bottles in the garage? -could you not care less? Do you own a service manual for every vehicle you ever owned? Do you still miss your first ride? ( mine was a '70 Chevelle) Can you carry on a two hour conversation discussing tools, scars, and hi-lift jacks? Remember when tool companies had the balls to put half-naked beauty queens on their calendars? Do you consider the Prius an abominable affront to the Gods of displacement, torque, and All Mighty Internal Combustion? If you answered in the affirmative to the preceding: This is your kind of hot rod! DETAILS: -The badass little SBC 350 4 bolt main is bullet-proof and starts and runs like the proverbial champ. It has an edelbrock 750 carb. and Hooker fender well headers. -Tranny is a Turbo 350 an operates perfectly. Runs cool, stops quick and turns heads! It's set up as a "shine" runner‌ (the tail lights, brake lights and gauges can all be turned off independently) for quick get aways. New Front seat, fuel tank and paint (59 olds aquamarine/black satin). It has many custom hot rod features and it gets 16 MPG to boot!

This little jewel has been in many car shows including; Viva Las Vegas, Atwood Early Rod Run, Good Guys, Blue Light Special , Hot Rods and Harleys and more!

QUESTIONS: -Why are you selling? I can't justify owning it anymore. Motorsickles, work, travel, and many other hot rod projects and beer have consumed my time and money. Someone else needs to appreciate the Olds for what it is: awesome American mechanical artistry. -What's wrong with it? Not a damn thing! Crank it up and drive it on a road trip! I have driven it to car shows and had a blast! -Will you take [insert ridiculously stupid low number here]? No. If I wanted [ridiculously low number] I would have asked [ridiculously low number] -Would this make a good car for my son/daughter? Hell. Yes. Not only a good car, a learning experience. Introduction to vehicular maintenance. -Will you take a check / cashier's check / Western Union Transfer / Nigerian Promissory Note? No. -No, really, all I have is [lowball dollar amount]? That's great, I don't give a bleep. I want $12,000. Why? Because I don't HAVE to sell this little beauty. Truth be known, I'd rather keep it. But if it's going to a good home - I will sell. -Why are you such a dick? Everything is relative; you should see my friends. Location: Fort Collins do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers post id: 4193066471 ETITORS NOTE: I’m sure this car has been sold by now but when I got this ad in an e-mail (few people sent it to me as a kool ad, and it is) it got me to thinkin about what we all go thru when it comes time to sell our ride.

1971 Ford XLT Ranger F150 long bed truck. I am sad to say that I am selling my 1971 Ford F150 XLT Ranger. I purchased this truck to use as a shop truck, but it is too nice. The truck has a 390 ci v-8 with c6 auto transmission, dana 60 rear end (3.73 gears), headers, front disc brakes, power steering and factory a/c. the engine is completely rebuilt. the carb (stock) was also recently rebuilt and the battery is less than 6 months old. the previous owner spent way more money on this beautiful truck than what I am asking for it. $15,000 Email me at cooljohnnyhotrod@yahoo.com or call 281 948-7883

For our featured pin up of the month we bring you the lovely Betty Ann. We have found you the blonde bombshell who also wrenches on her own car! With a love for cars, vintage lifestyle and a drive to succeed she has turned her passion into so many different ventures. Charity for our veterans, empowering women to pursue their dreams and be confident in their own skin, taps into untraveled territory of an all female car club and pin up print work. Quite the lady! And YES that Chevy belongs to 53D! Betty Ann is the proud owner and mechanic of a ’49 Kaiser Traveler and the President of Lady Luck Car Club. Always passionate about cars, the

vintage lifestyle, and strong/sensual women, LLCC naturally evolved from her everyday life. How she got into pin-up modeling is a different story than most. Betty was a 3rd generation worker at her family’s chemical manufacturing plant in East Oakland. 5 years ago a batch of glass cleaner was dyed incorrectly at the plant and the family was sitting on pallets of unusable product. Betty decided to bottle it in spare sprayers and take it to a Goodguys car show. She added products to the line, designed labels and Lady Luck Car Care was created. Due to a lack of extra money for models but knowing she wanted to have a vintage style pin-up on the label, she began doing the modeling herself. The label and product shoots turned into a poster and calendar line. Pretty soon Betty was getting some recognition for her pin-up and selling some print work. The calendar is now a big annual project for her that raises money for her veteran charity ‘Help Our Heroes’. These days the LLCC calendar and posters feature an entire troop of all natural pin-ups. Her troop’s purpose is to raise money for veterans, spread the interest of women working on hot rods, and to embrace their natural born, beautiful selves. Betty doesn’t always make friends when she says ‘Don’t buy fake tits, buy a real car’, but she feels it’s important for females to understand that beauty is not perfection, it is confidence. These days what started as a single mom’s dream of an allencompassing female car club, is now the largest all-female car organization in the country. Lady Luck CC has pre-’69 car club members all along the West coast, only selecting girls that own their rides and that know what’s going on under the hood (although she admits openly they are all constantly learning). Betty is also the front woman of the rockabilly band Betty Ann & the Lonesome III, sews her wardrobe & continues the ‘never ending’ ground-up rebuild of her Kaiser. Betty definitely loves being a mom the most and insists if it wasn’t for being a single mom hitting rock bottom she probably wouldn’t have started on this crazy journey 5 years ago. ‘It’s never too late to start living a dream, the trick is to never give up. It’s the only thing in life you can actually control. When people close a door, kick it down.’ ~Betty Ann’
