Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo If your readin’ this I guess the Mayan calendar reset itself for at least a few more years. But I have to admit it seemed as if the stores were trying to make sure you got rid of all your cash just in case the world would end on Dec. 21st. I know they took most of the money I had, thanks to Christmas shopping. As I was trying to get my office back in order, to get ready for a new year of MotorSports Magazine ideas, I found my self paging through some of the last few years issues. Things sure have changed over time. Just looking at the covers of each issue tells a story. I want to thank the photographers and models who have made Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine stand out, and a magazine people want to pick up to read. And most of thanks to all the readers who take the time to send all the articles and e-mails we set in to print. Everyone’s story is important to me and I’ll always try and find a page or two to put it on. This month we would like to welcome Tashia Loots to our Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine contributors & writing staff. I’m sure you will be as impressed with her camera work as we are. Tashia loves to go to the car shows so when you see her, say “Hello” Tashia Loots is the owner of Vintage Point Photography and founder of Hell on Heels Car Club. A classic car enthusiast Tashia was blessed to grow up around the car industry with her father. His love for cars lives with her. At an early age her father taught her the basics when it came to mechanics. The restoration of a classic car was a dream until ten months ago when she purchased a 66' Plymouth Belvedere II aka “Ms. B”. Tashia said taking on the restoration has been more than just a small project. Tashia is hands on kinda’ girl and is doing 90% of the restoration herself. So far restoration has included replacement of the rear-end, oil pump, fuel pump, electrical, interior, wheels and tires and a whole lot more. Tashia went on to say she has met many great people as an enthusiast by attending car shows, and joined the Big Easy Mopar Association in New Orleans. For all you ladies out there Tashia wanted you to know there is a new car club you just might be interested in. Tashia is the founder of the “Hell on Heels” Car Club, a car club for women, she hopes to empower more women to take on their dreams no matter how big or small. The women also work with each other lending a helping hand in their restoration projects. You are definitely going to see a lot of this lady. From her own family garage, to car shows, and the ladies of "Hell on Heels", there's no stopping her enjoyment of the car lovers dream! If you would like more information on the “Hell on Heels” Car Club send an email to Tashia at tashia@the-loots.com. Jimbo, Several days ago as I left a meeting at a hotel; I desperately gave myself a personal TSA pat down. I was looking for my keys. They were not in my pockets. A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My husband has scolded me many times for leaving the keys in the ignition. My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. His theory is that the car will be stolen. As I burst through the door, I came to a terrifying conclusion. His theory was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most difficult call of all, "Hi, honey," I stammered, ( I always call him "honey" in times like these) "I love you." "I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen." There was a period of silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard his voice. "Are you kidding' me", he barked, "I dropped you off" !!! !!!! Now it was my time to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me."

He retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this cop I didn't steal your car." Yep it's the golden years......... Terri Jimbo, This little story crossed my desk this morning and after I read it I had to stop what I was doing and think about what it was saying to all of us ... that is when I decided to forward it -- I think there may some words in here that could benefit us so here it is ,.... Giff A violin with three strings By Jack Riemer On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, a violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is an awesome sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he

bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play. By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play. But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap – it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant. There was no mistaking what he had to do. We figured that he would have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage – to either find another violin or else find another string for this one. But he didn’t. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had left off. And he played with such passion and such power and such purity as they had never heard before. Of course, anyone knows that it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. I know that, and you know that, but that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him modulating, changing, re-composing the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was de-tuning the strings to get new sounds from them that they had never made before. When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. There was an extraordinary outburst of applause from every corner of the auditorium. We were all on our feet, screaming and cheering, doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had done. He smiled, wiped the sweat from this brow, raised his bow to quiet us, and then he said – not boastfully, but in a quiet, pensive, reverent tone – “You know, sometimes it is the artist’s task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left.” What a powerful line that is. It has stayed in my mind ever since I heard it. And who knows? Perhaps that is the definition of life – not just for artists but for all of us. Here is a man who has prepared all his life to make music on a violin of four strings, who, all of a sudden, in the middle of a concert, finds himself with only three strings; so he makes music with three strings, and the music he made that night with just three strings was more beautiful, more sacred, more memorable, than any that he had ever made before, when he had four strings. So, perhaps our task in this shaky, fast-changing, bewildering world in which we live is to make ‘music’, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer possible, to make ‘music’ with what we have left. Readers Rides... Robert Fontenot owns a beautiful, yellow 1972 Chevelle Malibu custom. Robert and his wife purchased it in 1999 as an engagement present. They bought the car from a sixteen year old, for four-thousand dollars. Robert drove it for a year and then took it off the road to start repairs. Robert received orders to Alaska, so the car sat in storage for four years. Then he received orders to go to Florida, but finally he got back to Virginia where the car was. He found a good paint and body guy in January of 2007 and the car was done 2 1/2 years later. Its still not complete because there's always something his wife wants to do to it! The Halloween swap was their first car show, as they mostly do cruiseins. Thank you for your service Robert and that sure is a great car! By: Neecy

Some of you and maybe all of you know by now about the passing of Mr “Buddy”. The picture above is how I remember him. Buddy was the guy who showed up for coffee, sat down with a big “How ya doin’” and the talk was about cars, who’s building what, “old times on the Coast or a rod run”. He had the ability to take an old truck that might be heading for the junkyard scales and rebuild it to a great driving machine. I can remember seeing old forgotten truck bodies on his trailer wondering how he would ever be able to repair the metal let alone make it drivable. And then one day he would show up at Waffle House for coffee driving that old truck. Buddy’s story might not be that unusual and we all may know someone who has “the ability” to make things, but he was one of the guys... and I’ll miss him…. Jimbo Louis "Buddy" Rogers, 76, of Long Beach died Tuesday, December 4, 2012 in Long Beach. He was born in Gulfport and was a lifelong resident of the Coast. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. Mr. Rogers was a retired Civil Service employee at Keesler Air Force Base and follow-ing retirement worked with his son, Seth at Seth's Lawn Mower in Long Beach. He was inducted into the Mississippi Street Rod Hall of Fame in 2010 and was an avid enthusiast of street rods, hot rods, and Cruising the Coast.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louie and June Showers Rogers. Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Dauro Rogers of Long Beach; a daughter, Melissa (Randy) Fischer; a son, Seth Rogers, and a sister, Norma (Ray) Napier all of Long Beach; two grandchildren, Faren (Dustin) Knowles and Tara Fischer; and two great-grandchildren, Addison Knowles and Henley Knowles. Visitation was held Friday, December 7, 2012 at BradfordO'Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport, and the Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 8. at Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport. The family requested that his friends drive their hot rods in the procession from the church to the cemetery, And we did, lot’s of us. Mr. Buddy we love you and you will be greatly missed.

Like any small town in 1955, find its four way stop and for two bits you could order up a cheeseburger and a side of fried taters with some change to spare. If that four way was around Peace and Liberty street in Canton, Mississippi you’ve been sittin across the counter from nineteen year old Lucille at Do Boys Diner. She was an eyeful to behold and if it were past five o’clock on any given night you may just get your eyes swollen shut for starring too long at Lucille, that was just about the time her boyfriend, former local high school football legend turned log truck driver Johnnie Baker would wheel in to stable his filly for the night’s festivities. But that was a couple of hours from happening on Thursday the twentieth of October and the bells bolted to the swinging front doors were ringing out to Lucille and the fry cook at Do Boys that a few stiff legs just strolled in and life for the red haired beauty smacking on a piece of juicy fruit was just about to get more interesting. “Where’d you boys like to sit?” she asked, a text book set up for the hormonal hillbilly boppers who were just pass’n through. “I’ll sit anywhere you ask me to gorgeous”, said Red the loudest of the trio of rebel rousers. There were three of them and they were hep musicians that’d blown in on their way to play an opening gig at a juke joint super club just outside Jackson Tennessee the next day. Les Rude on stand up base, Steve Kanter on skins and Mike Redinger strummin a Gretsch. His buddies just called him “Red”, he was the lead for the triad calling themselves “The Red Barron’s” and they believed they were on their way to havin it made in the shade. Lucille, looking less than impressed, “how about taking it some where’s else if you all are look’n for trouble?” “You got us all wrong dollface we’re just look’n to have some harmless fun.” “Well then what would you like to drink”, she asked? “Three cherry Coke’s dollface and a round of burgers and fries will do just fine.”

8

JANUARY 2013

As she walked away from the table she glanced at the mirror and crack a grin back at Red, she wasn’t at all put off by his devilish charm, in fact she was playing up the wet rag act. A feline knows just how to play a tomcat and this little kittens tail was making Red howl like a werewolf in side. Thirty minutes later the Red Barron’s were cutting through their juicy beef burgers like a chainsaw on a ter mite infested log. They sat at the table working their song bill for the gig when Lucille walked over with a smiled di rected at Red. “Would you fellers like anything else to eat, we have some nice homemade desserts?” “No beautiful, what we’d like is your opinion on our des tiny”, said Red, looking into her eye’s while the other two Baron’s fought back laughter. They knew Red was about to lay it on thick in a last ditch effort to capture her affection. “See me and my boy’s hear are a part of the soon to be dis covered “Red Barron’s” and we are writing out the three songs that will keep us from being just the opening act for Sam Phillips’ traveling show tomorrow.” “Now you look like a woman with great taste and judging from your command with respect, I believe you could help us to pick out the best line up to insure stardom tomorrow?”

www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Now as anybody who’s grown up in a small town knows, the grass across the county line grows greener but the grass across a Stateline is not only greener, it’s manicured and pedicured if you hitch your wagon to the right team of horses. Red had said two things that peaked Lucille’s interest; the first was the word stardom and the second was woman. Nobody had ever asked for her opinion outside of the daily specials at work and when you couple that with being called a bonafied woman! Red had set all the tumblers in an exact sequence, this safe was cracked. “You want my opinion on songs”, she said with muffled enthusiasm! “Yes darling, here’s a list of our titles, the first four are slow with the last three being more hopped up.” Lucille looked over the song sheet on the table and settled on three titles but the last one caught her eye, “Steppin Out on Him”. “What’s that one about”, Lucille asked Red? “That’s one I’m about to write, it’s about a waitress who takes a chance on fate and leaves her small surroundings to run off and have a good time.” “Sounds like a hit” she replied let me get your total ready. Lucille turned around and headed to get their bill, when she returned she was wearing her coat and purse. “I’m all finished up on my shift, consider that meal my fare to tag along and see if that song make’s it tomorrow night, you fella’s have room for one more?” To that Red with a gesture of royalty offered his arm to her and pointed to a green Olds “98” out front replying, “join me upfront my lady, while these two goons ride in the back.” The door to the diner rang shut and the four headed to wards the custom ride, Lucille remarked if they were to make it in the big time they’d need a gimmick to sell a song about stepping out. She suggested the trio stop on their way out of town at the local favorite to pick up some threads, she knew just the place. Like clockwork, nearly thirty minutes later Lucille’s yester day special, Johnnie Baker pulled into the diner. The door to his logging truck squeaked open as the size fourteen boots thumped the ground headed towards the door. “Lucy!” He called out as the door bells fell silent. Another waitress came over to explain to Johnnie where she’d gone and quicker than a polecats tale can lift, he was headed towards the Tennessee line in a fit of rage. Meanwhile over at Gibbs Mercantile Store, the band had decided to listen to their newly appointed assistant and they were shopping for the one article of clothing that’d put them out front of all the rest. On display in the front store window were a pair of shoes that caught the eye of Lucille, nobody in such a sleepy small community had any use for such an impractical pair of suede leather shoes. Bright blue with white souls they made a mockery of the towns’ blue

collar patrons passing through the front door at Gibbs so the manager was happy to see them walk out for less than the asking price. Red however wasn’t happy at first, his simple way of thought was obvious. “We ain’t The Blue Barron’s we need to find me a Red pair the blue ones would be bad luck!” In a town of less than thirty five hundred you take what you can get and in the end Red relented to go blue remark ing talent was his ticket to the big leagues no shoes, or even with the blue shoes he was going to make it. He went around to the trunk to fetch his guitar throwing the keys to Steve saying, “lay a patch Kantor daddy, I have a hit song to write before we take the stage tomorrow night!” They slung gravel headed towards the Stateline, Red and Lucille in the back working with different chord arrange ments and writing down lyrics. Three hours and 250 miles later they had a hillbilly bop number that’d make even the Mayor of Squaresville jump, jive and wail. They rolled into the motel and piled up some Z’s till it was show time. The Red Barron’s took the stage that night and “Stepping Out on Him” had ‘em hoppin in the isles, but just as they stopped everyone began to chant, “Carl, Carl, Carl!” They’d mistakenly thought for a brief few minutes the mob was theirs, but make no mistake they were here to night for one name and that was Carl Perkin’s. Red and the boys moved down front and out on the floor when Carl made his way in and started into “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” It was on the second chorus when Carl looked down, Red and Lucille were in the middle of a Lindy Hop twist, when the crowd parted by a massive arm and Johnnie, who’d pushed his way through, grabbed Red

knocking him down to the floor, spitting in his face, he’d started cursing him all over the place. Finally, Johnnie began to lift his big boot to stomp on Reds shoes when all of a sudden Lucille yell’s out, “Honey get off the Blue Suede shoes, you can do any thing but lay off those Blue Suede shoes!” Carl looked down at what was happening and then back at the band with a grin like a goat eating a pine cone. Carl was remembering something his buddy Johnny had said a week earlier about a song idea; Carl had passed it off but was beginning to get a good feel ing for the right lyrics. Security was grabbing big ole Baker and pulling him off of Red, Lucille went running out after him through the door. Red regained consciousness and walked over to Lucille telling her, “look baby, it was fun but me and the boys are headed out for the next show. Take that big, over grown gorilla, back to Canton before he goes ape again.” Lucille recognized some thing’s are worth fighting for in life, and when you find someone who cares that much about you to chase after you; you shouldn’t just chase something that is nothing more than bright lights. The Red Barron’s never made it big, perhaps if the shoe were on the other foot who knows what would have happen? …Well, it's one for the money, Two for the show, Three to get ready, Now go, cat, go… Carl Perkins

I finally made it to the “new” McElroy's in Biloxi. It's new in the fact that they rebuilt back at the Biloxi harbor after the building was washer away from Katrina. I stop by and had breakfast one morning. The special that morning was a broiled or grilled pork chop (bone-in), 2 eggs, potatoes or grits , biscuit or toast and coffee . The bone-in pork chop was great. Most of the time the pork chops for breakfast are the boneless and end up dry when they are cooked. The view is great now looking out over the sound. The building had to be built up so high. It was nice eating and watching the fishing boats go out and the people camped on the breakwater barrier. McElroy's menu is laid out in away that you order from a list. Order your eggs anyway you want. Then you order the meat the same way and etc. There isn't a breakfast platter as such , you make your own. Which is good , because you can order what you want from the lists of items. Go by and have breakfast, lunch or dinner and relax looking out over the sound. Who know what you will see or whom you will see. J. R.

She walked up and tied her old mule to the hitch rail. As she stood there, brushing some of the dust from her face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. The young gunslinger looked at the old woman and laughed, saying, "hey old woman, have you ever danced?" The old woman looked up at the gunslinger and said, "no, I never did dance... never really wanted to." A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said, "well, you old bag, you're gonna dance now," and started shooting at the old woman's feet. The old woman prospector - not wanting to get her toe blown off - started hopping around. everybody was laughing. When his last bullet had been fired, the young gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon. The old woman turned to her pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled shotgun, and cocked both hammers. The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air. The crowd stopped laughing immediately. The young gunslinger heard the sounds too, and he turned around very slowly. The silence was almost deafening. The crowd watched as the young gunman stared at the old woman and the large gaping holes of those twin barrels. The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in the old woman's hands, as she quietly said, "son, have you ever licked a mule's butt?" The gunslinger swallowed hard and said, "no mam... but... I've always wanted to." There are a few lessons for us all here: 1 - Never be arrogant. 2 - Don't waste ammunition. 3 - Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are. 4 - Always, always make sure you know who has the power. 5 - Don't mess with old women; they didn't get old by being stupid… I just love a story with a happy ending, don't you? : Rusty

She was in the bathroom putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.... My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?" After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?" A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!" My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied. A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read." I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!" When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights." When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised "Mine says I'm 4 to 6."

Never underestimate the Power of Sweet Potato Pie! I was watching a little TV and I had discovered a show called Duck Dynasty. The show stars Willie, his brother Jase and Willie’s other brother Jep, a crazy uncle named Si, dad Phil and mom Kate. When you first watch Duck Dynasty, you think these people are crazy, then you realize these crazy people are truly good people with a deep, true commitment to faith. The boys, Jase, Jep and their coworker friends were all set to go hunting during the holidays when they showed up at the Robertson homestead. Well mom had different ideas. She wanted the boys to put up about a thousand boxes of Christmas lights. Now Kate is a southern lady that is use to having her way and knows how to go about getting it. Jase told his mom that they had been planning to go deer hunting a long time, did it every year at Christmas and was not putting up any Christmas lights. She told them all that if they would put up all those Christmas lights, she would bake them sweet potato pies. Kate is no dummy she knows how to work a man. One by one the boys started giving in and finally Jase gave in also. Jase asked his dad Phil “what just happened here?”…what just happened here? Phil uttered these prophetic words: “Never Underestimate the Power… of Sweet Potato Pie”.

It got me thinking about the power women have over men. It is one of the strongest powers in the universe. Women slowly, but surely wear us down. Women are slowly but methodically turning their men into women. I’m serious here. Think about it…from the day we get married, women start trying to change us. It is a slow meticulous process. It starts out with being clean and picking up after ourselves. By the time we have been married 30 years or more we can hardly recognize ourselves anymore. Sure, when we leave the house we macho it up and we’re all manly, but around the house we are being turned into women. Our society has a nice name for it. Society calls it mellowing with age, but it’s our wives turning us into women. For us it’s the path of least resistance, it’s easier to just go along with the program than to keep fighting back. Sure we still stand our ground on certain issues. We try to pick and choose our battles wisely, but I believe in the end, it’s all for not. We cannot overcome the power of sweet potato pie. Look around at the men that have gone before us. We remember our heroes…Dad, Granddad, uncle Billy, brother Kenneth, cousin Johnny, they all lost the fight. You can see the handwriting on the wall. They mellowed with age. Women are an adversary we can’t

beat; we cannot win against the female species. They will keep coming at us until they win… or we die! Look at the men that have escaped the sweet potato pie prison… the men that have broken out and lived life on their own. Some of my friends have turned into hermits that have lost their way. The lack of all the womanly things have made them steer way off course in life. It’s all that anchoring or roots in life, that good home cooking, having your clothes all clean, your bed made, that cup of coffee ready for you in the morning and walking into that clean house when you get home from work… it just wears a body down! The bad thing about our women turning us into women is… there is nothing we can do about it. We’ve looked around, we see what the alternative is, living a life of male solitude, dirty socks and all… and we don’t like it. So we keep trying to hold on to our manhood just as long as we possibly can… but it’s a losing proposition however we cut it. Don’t believe me? Look around at your house starting with the living room. Is your living room a mancave? OK, is it half a mancave and half suzy homemaker? Let me guess…it’s all decorated by your wife. Sure you have a few things here or there, but it has the women’s touch to it. See any Hot Rod art on the wall? What about a coffee table made out of a NASCAR tire? Oh sure…there are a few things here or there…after all she had to throw you a bone, right? Oh you have your mancave alright, but let me guess, it has a concrete floor and your Hot Rod drips oil on it. We are all in the same frigging boat… but the second we walk out that door and get in our pickup truck, bam… we get our manhood back… at least until we pull back into the driveway again. Yeah honey I’m coming and yes I’ll take the garbage out right after I get through doing my nails. Oh well, it beats the alternative. But how I do dream of the days when my testosterones were pumping at 100 mph. I was ten feet tall and bullet proof, driving my cool car down Main Street with Credence Clearwater Revival pumping on the radio. Instead of being under the power of sweet potato pie, I just enjoyed eating it! Little did I know… It’s the time of the year when because of the weather, we spend way too much time in the house and it starts closing in on us. Well it’s time to get out to my mancave, wipe up some oil drips and reorganize the garage. After all the fast pace activities of the car show season, when in a rush, things just got tossed aside. Time to get things back organized and get ready to go at it again for the new year. 2013 is certain to be a busy year with car shows, the Hot Rod, the column and now a full season of the greatest Hot Rod music show ever at a car show…Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show. My wife, the sweet potato pie warden, says I turn fun into work and I guess I do…but keeping busy keeps my mind off getting old and keeps me out of trouble, cause I do love me some sweet potato pie! Get your Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER…Hot Rod state of mind, that is, when you can get a kitchen pass!

The folks were going away for the weekend, but I had to work at my job in the parts department at Bud Gates Chevrolet. They were going to a lake cottage with some other old codgers. I was going to stay at home, alone. I got my orders, of course, before they left. I was not to drive the “new car”, a 1965 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale. I was a junior in high school. You don't see any potential problem here, do you? The parents left around two in the afternoon. I got out of school at three and arrived home. There in the garage was a shiny new light blue Olds and a 1961 Corvair station wagon. I was allowed to drive the Corvair…I chose the Olds. Now tell me would you rather drive the wagon, or a new 365 HP (at 4800 RPM) hardtop? Exactly! There was no other choice. I got cleaned up, and set out to pick up a beautiful brunette that I thought would be just the perfect complement to this sexy car. I had already advised my friends of my plans earlier at school…just in case I decided to break my promise to my parents. They encouraged me. Come on, I was a great driver. Nothing would happen. I picked up Sharon and off we went. We had the windows down and the radio was blasting. This car had a GREAT stereo. We went to the B/ K for a root beer and fries. We drove by the “Coffee Cup” to see if there was anybody there we could impress. I drove to Speedway to the “Big Boy” to make a few rounds, then to Indy to the “Pole” just for good measure. We were looking cool. Sharon and I met up with some others and decided to go to the drive-in theater. I wasn't allowed to go there, either. We had an absolutely terrific time and I played the “big shot” to the hilt. Sharon lived about a mile from my house and as I was taking her home, a car ran the stop light at Green and Main, (That was the only stoplight in town) I swerved to miss it and hit a telephone pole. Fortunately, I was not going very fast and there was not a lot of damage. Unfortunately, the other car didn't stop. I surveyed the damage to the Olds and the telephone pole. There was no damage to the pole, and we were unhurt. There appeared to me to be no reason to call the Police. I took Sharon home. Then I began to worry. Once I got home, I began to study the damage in detail. I was going to need a right headlight and bezel, fender extension, repair the fender, and replace the lower fender molding. The hood did not get pinched and the grille was untouched, so I was in good shape there. The good news (if there was any) was that I was going to work in a few hours. The bad news was this car was going to need paint. Could this be accomplished without anyone discovering the damage?

The parts were secured and I began work on the vehicle with the help of some of my buddies. Bud's dad owned a body shop, so we were able to do the work there and persuade him to do the painting. I paid for the paint and material. I think it amounted to $15.00. I am here to tell you he did a beautiful job. Thank God for lacquer paint. I took the Olds home and parked it in the garage late Sunday afternoon. I hoped there were no blemishes we had not noticed. After all, this was a hurried job. My parents returned home, the car was in the garage, and I didn't relate any of the events of the weekend to them. I was sweating bullets! They didn't examine the car that night, but I sure had a hard time sleeping. My anxiety was at it's peak. My obedience improved after that. I was terrified that they were going to discover my secret. Finally, I had to tell them what had happened. I was in deep trouble, but I felt better for confessing. They could have at least been proud that my body work was flawless. Heck, until I told them they hadn't noticed it had been repaired. I was punished none-the-less. So ends another exciting episode in my life. The name was not changed because I was not innocent. Gotta Cruise! Cubby

Halloween Swap and Car Show Taking care of our wounded military A sunny, fall day in Abbeville, Louisiana was the setting of the first annual Halloween swap and car show on Saturday, October 27th, 2012. The purpose of this event was to raise money to benefit the wounded warrior project. Mike Riley, with the help of David McItyre organized the show. Mike is a disabled military veteran and has always had a place in his heart for the Wounded Warrior project. He discovered how much the organization helped many of his military friends that were wounded in combat and decided he wanted to contribute. He knew that a car show would be the best and most fun way to raise money. There were one-hundred and nine cars and trucks registered and onehundred fifty-seven total that showed up to show off their rides. I would say that is a pretty good amount for a first show, don’t you think? Besides viewing all of the fabulous hot rods, a swap meet was held offering items such as antique car parts, used engines and many other hard-to-find items. After shopping at the meet, vendors offered delicious foods like crispy fried shrimp, savory jambalaya, juicy burgers and home made spring rolls. My oh my did we get stuffed with all of that great food! Of course all of those calories had to be walked off, so what better way to do that then look at some more sweet hot rods! A stage was set up that show cased two bands that offered entertainment for the spectators and owners. The Hot Dogs and Classic Chaos happily played their tunes for enthusiastic rockers swaying to the music. Kuzn’ Jack was also strolling around the show grounds offering his pin-striping services to anyone that wanted to customize their cars, trucks and even shoes and purses. At the end of the day, awards were handed out to owners that won for Best in show, best interior and best engine etc. Ted McIntyre of McIntyre investments donated one-thousand dollars to the cause and Otto Candies also donated one-thousand. Eight-thousand, five-hundred dollars was raised and after expenses a check for six-thousand, five-hundred dollars was donated to the Wounded Warrior project. David Riley wants everyone to know that next year he will be putting on two shows. One in the spring and one in the fall. He plans on each show becoming bigger and better than the last. He wants to have a larger swap meet area and more cars and vendors participating. Let’s help him out by showing up to support the Wounded Warrior project next year folks! -If you would like to donate to Wounded Warrior project, go to www.woundedwarriorproject.org -To contact Kuzn’ Jack for pin-striping, go to www.pinheadlounge.com/kjs or find him on Facebook. www.CoastCruizers.com

Driving down highway 308 on a very warm December day, we knew we were headed to experience something new and what was promised to be a good time. What we didn't know was just how much was on tap for the day and how great the 2nd Annual Rockabilly Rumble hosted by the “Boneyard Kreepers” would be. This year's cause was to help a beautiful young lady, Abigail Denos, who is in need of future surgeries. Guests brought food, awesome cars and tons of fun for the day. They also brought generous donations to help the cause of Abigail. For December the weather was wonderfully warm and perfect for the events at the Kennedy residence in Larose, LA. Families filed in with bikes, classic cars and rat rods. There was even a dragster on display as you entered the property. Lunch was “Potluck” and food poured in from attending guests. Numerous tables were covered with almost everything imaginable on hand you would want to eat! The “Boneyard Kreepers” started off the event with a blessing and thanks to all who came out to eat, have fun and partake in the races! Following the blessing, a huge line was formed as everyone gathered to enjoy lunch and share the dishes of others. Just when you thought everyone's hunger was satisfied, another hunger was steaming; the hunger to get low down and dirty with the rat rods. To kick things off, Abigail raced a member of the “Boneyard Kreepers” down the ole school Grass/Dirt drag strip. She was assisted by another member of the “Boneyard Creepers” and claimed victory in the end.

One by one the engines cranked up and lined up to race. The families and guests gathered along the sidelines with much anticipation. We witnessed nonstop action from the powerful engines of some amazing rat rods. Not only were the rat rods out that day, there were even some classics and bikes giving it a go. The 18 JANUARY 2013

crowd also enjoyed watching the dirt fly as many took their vehicles to spin donuts in the dirt pit. This was a large and amazingly safe environment for all to play and give it all their rides had. All drivers that raced were asked to make a lap so that they and their vehicles could be formally introduced to the crowd. By applause the crowd deemed “Crab” and his “Six Pack Pretty” rat rod the favorite. “Crab” received a plaque in recognition of his ride, personality and entertainment appeal. As the winner of this award, “Crab” is obligated to attend the event next year to pass the award on. Rockabilly Rumble promised a good time and that they did! This was a time for friends and families to get together and do something good for the community. Tires blew. Dirt flew. Even a few rods got bent. But when all was done, everyone had a great time and helped raise well over $1,000 for a beautiful young lady named Abigale. We look forward to attending this show again next year. This is certainly one not to miss!

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. It is the holiday season and Christmas was not far away, but I did have a chance to catch a few movies in between looking for the perfect gift and playing shows to have the money to buy them....you know how it goes. I was excited when I heard the movie Lincoln (rated pg13, run time 2hr 30min) was at my local theater. Written by Tony Kusner, Doris Kearns Goodwin and directed by Steven Spielberg, you may have heard of him! Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strahairn, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and many more great actors that make this story play well on the big screen! I always enjoyed studying history in high school and college. I've always liked to dig deeper and think about what life would be like to live in another century. What kind of music would you listen to? What kind of lifestyle would you live? This movie really told Lincoln's life story in a panoramic, honest, warts and all style that keep this story moving in a good pace. I enjoyed how his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, played by Sally Field, was a loose canon who spoke her mind. Back in the day it was frowned upon. Also touching her struggle with a mental illness and the lose of one of her sons. Mrs. Fields does a great job portraying the suffering wife of one of the most popular presidents who sometimes goes toe to toe with who ever crosses her. Lincoln was a smooth politician who new how to approach a problem and try and solve it. There were many, many problems in our country during the civil war. Daniel Day Lewis delivered a Oscar caliber performance as our 16th president. Watching him deal with old, antiquated ideas of the past and blazing new political trails that are still walked today. Watching Lincoln struggle with his son, played by Joseph Gordon Levitt and have his son clash with Lincolns demands really added dimension to this portrait of a country and its leader during desperate times. There were plenty of good actors and good performances. Tommy Lee Jones always delivers and hits the mark with his portrayal of Thaddeus Stevens and my favorite character actor, David Strathairn fits this film like Abe's Top Hat and rocks another Oscar worthy performance. This film has a ton of star power and even some cameos by famous actors like Kevin Kline. Go see this film. The only complaint I could have that its a bit long. This is one of the type of film you have see a couple of times. There is a lot going on. Welcome to the late 1800's. I give this movie 8 out of 10 picks.

Next up is a movie that I had high hopes for but was let down very softly, just like the title of this Hollywood offering, Killing Them Softly (Rated R, run time 1hr 37min.) Written by George V. Higgins and Andrew Domonik. Directed by Andrew Dominik. Starring Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, James Gandofini, Richard Jenkins and Scoot McNairy. The plot to this sleepy film is about crooks robbing other crooks and the Karma that catches up with them. It's about some bumbling thugs that rip off a illegal card games. The high stake poker games carry a big payday and is too tempting for the would be thefts. The only thing I found interesting is the role reversal of Ray Liotta. He is Hollywood's number one mafia crime boss big Kahouna character actor but plays the victim in this poker players nightmare. To watch him get roughed up was an interesting plot twist. If I put Brad Pitt and Mr. Liotta in a cage match I cant see Brad coming out on top but that's the Hollywood magic that sells tickets!! Tinsel towns best character actor Richard Jenkins was featured but I would have liked to see more from him. Of course, you have to have James Gandolfini make an appearance in any crime movie. He plays his usual bad guy with a heart of gold and delivers a solid performance as a fellow crime cowboy. I wonder if James wants to play a different character, maybe a heartthrob that sells woman's perfume and adopts babies from every nation in the world and does......he is better off taking the easy way as a crime boss all-star! Being Brad Pitt must be a fulltime gig and it's probably better just to take the low road. you know, paved with hookers, drugs and easy money. Sounds like my new rap carrier mission statement!! Brad did put in a solid performance a hit-man that does his job old school. He does his legwork and takes care of business in an almost polite, proper style of murder for hire you just don't see anymore.

I like crime movies like the next guy but I have a problem when they make the character to appealing and almost someone you would look up to. I know its thug on thug crime but criminals are people too! The thing that bugged me the most was all the slow motion, hair blowing in the wind/Fabio style camera work every time Pitts character did his work. It was kind of funny after awhile but you gotta’ do what you can to hold up a screenplay with a thin plot and a film full of good actors that aren't doing there best work. Maybe all the slow motion camera work was done to make the movie last long enough because the script fell short of the mark. I give this puff piece 5 out of 10 picks.

I have had a lot of positive response from my readers and have been asked to rate a list of my favorite movies. I will put some of my favorites movies in this column on months when there wasn't enough good movies for me to watch and this month was slim on good stories, so here we go. I can’t rate what my favorite movie is so I will just list the ones I have watched too many times. The movies I always try and make my friends and family watch with me as I ramble on about what I love about the script, actors etc. while the movie is rolling. Yes, I'm one of those film buffs. First up is the 1979 release of the Who classic album/movie Quadrophenia (not rated, run time 1hr. 20min.) Written by David Humphries, Franc Roddam and Martin Stellman. Produced by the Who. This is the vision of Pete Townsend and those mod rockers who made the mod scene and lived to tell about it. This movie is a simple but riveting story of gang battles based on personal music lifestyle choices. The Mosd vs,. the Rockers. The main character, Jimmy, played well by Phil Daniels struggles to stay alive in this coming of age story set in 60's swinging England. Jimmy was a mod. His friends were Mods. They ride Vespa scooters with tons of bling and they have a strict dress code that makes them stick out in a black and white lifestyle that is slowly killing there dreams of glamour and a brave new world. The Mods listen to mostly English bands as the Who, the Small Faces and American bands in the Motown family and other US r&b. The shiny new lifestyle they live is based on house parties, popping pills and wearing the best suit they can buy on Sheppard's bush culture. This is a stark contrast to their parents world of war and struggle. An age old tale of tension between the past and a new youth movement that started a gap between parents and children that stills goes on today. Jimmy and hid friends lived for the weekend, They would work any job they could keep for a few weeks and steal to live there well dressed teenage revolution. I love the music that ruled there world but I have to side with there nemesis, the Rockers. They listen to American Rockabilly and ride Harleys covered in leather. They would rather toss down a pint than pop a steady stream of pills. I guess I'm a Rocker true and blue but I sure dig what the Mods did back in the day. I was living in California when this movie was released and got swept up in the coolness of living your chosen lifestyle. I was pursuing my professional skateboard career but started playing music that was influenced by this by both sides of this classic teen rebellion masterpiece. That's right, I said masterpiece! The story follows Jimmy rise and fall from grace as he pursues his almost unreachable love of his short life, Steph. She is a beautiful mod scenester who was out for a goodtime and liked Jimmy. She liked a lot of people in their Mod party scene. That's is what brought our favorite Mod to a self-destructive nose dive. The pinnacle of mod cooleness was realized by the Face. The top dog in Jimmys world was played by Sting. I think this was his first movie. He was the best dressed, had the best scooter, the best clothes and the best girlfriends. Everybody looked up to the Face to set the standard. Although Sting's character was the king, he had no dialogue in this first outing into movie stardom. His job of playing the Face was a solid performance from this English rock royalty. This was early in his career and he had to hustle for screen time like the rest of the crowd. The soundtrack to the film is the rock opera Quadrophenia. Penned by Towsend of the Who. I love everything about this film and hope some of my readers will watch this masterpiece. I haven't seen this movie for awhile because it wasn't released on DVD till a few years ago. I give it 9 out of 10 Picks.

Well, let me wrap this months reviews. Don't forget to support your local theaters, just remember to turn your phone off when you sit down in your local theater and never get caught sneaking in candy!! See you at the matinee! ………… DD Thunders I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and holiday time. Send all your comments to me at ddthunders100@yahoo.com

Dirt Track Memories by: Larry Dunham Some are in wheel chairs, many are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. Super Bowl is coming up, and now I think of who was my favorite football player. My big brother, who was the fullback in high school, was the one. He was the kind who could do anything in sports. He hit the longest home run ever hit, when the ball broke the window in the high school gym. He was the quickest in the 50 yard dash, and was the local school champ in boxing and wrestling. He scored more touch downs his first year, than any one ever had, and along came WWII and he enlisted at 17. To finish, he was a radioman gunner on a Douglas SBD dive bomber in Admiral Halseys Fleet 78. He did 40 combat missions. On the other hand, he didn't know a spark plug from a crescent wrench. After the war, if his car acted funny I would get the phone call! He would say “I thought you fixed this car last year”! I would always tell him “they wear out you know” and he would just laugh. It was “Big Dunham” and “Little Dunham” in our town. His first name was Marston, and mine is Loren so it was “big” & “little” because no one could remember what our first names were. He died 3 years ago at age 85. Next I want you readers to pretend I'm Bill O'Reilly, famous Fox T.V. Person. He is not prejudiced as far as you can tell watching him on T.V. Here goes, ---- People I know from the old days, tell me that NASCAR (and I mean the office and business) is preparing two (2) cars for Black Drivers! The story goes that attendance has fallen off 10% and they feel they can up the black fan attendance enough to make up for 7% of the loss. “You must be kidding”! They get 100,000 + every week! So you're going to put up 50 million for 2 cars and loose a real big bunch of fans to get 7% or 7000 black fans. Also, they serve beer in the stands and in the infield are all the RV'S with plenty of 80 proof in the liquor cabinet. The way I see it, it's a bad business decision. There will be trouble!! 1.) The Indy 500 circuit had owner Bill Cosby (Dr. Huckstable) T.V. star, who bought a Indy 500 for a black driver named (Willie T. Ribbs”) Now I'm not kidding, that really was his name! He wasn't bad, but he wasn't “good” either. He finally ran over one of his pit crew pushing the car and killed him. It was the end of that career. Bill Cosby also sold out. 2.) Wendell Scott, black driver won a NASCAR (Winston Cup) race down in Florida 50 or more years ago. He was running 14th and on the last lap the 1st 12 cars wrecked, the 13th pulled up high and stopped, Scott went down low to take the checker. 3.) No other black driver has ever finished in the top 10 in any cup race. 4.) I wasn't there, but I've seen how associations management can ruin a circuit. (right Mitch?) 5.) I own Ford Trucks, I love em' but I'll bet they will back one or both drivers. I sure hope I'm wrong. Don't know Jack Rousch, but if he doesn't like it, it will be another make. 6.) You readers must remember, there are lots of ways management can favor certain drivers. How and where they line up, the inspection crews can fault a car (any car) and they have to go back to the shop, or pits and make changes and come out to line up at the end of the line. 7.) My good friend Don Edmunds who ran with me, with his own car, (midgets) and we were together at Indy 500 in 1956, with car #41 owned by Ernie Casale, and Lyle Greeman. Anyway, he started a shop building race cars, midgets, sprints, modifieds etc. So he builds a 4 wheel independent open wheel midget race car. It's

got an Offy in it, I believe Howard Linne was the owner. They take it to Phoenix, AZ to Manzanita race track. They go out, warm up, no one says anything except “NICE CAR”. The car goes out about 10th or 12th (I wasn't there) and sets FAST TIME! Also broke the midget track record, but they disqualified the car (inspectors) and it wasn't allowed to run. There were two plates about 5X7 inches on each side of the nose and they threw out the qualifying time, and refused to let the car run. Howard Linne was big time midget owner, 61 wins, Hall of Fame, etc. etc. The inspectors beat him. 8.) Last but not least, I've got my midget at Tucson, AZ about 30 years ago, and Jon Backlund was the driver. Bob Higman of Indiana was the engine master of the V-6 stage II Buick we were running. Bob is gone now, but the Hall of Fame builder will be remembered! Anyway, there are 65 cars there, and P.J. Jones (Parnellis son) has fast time. Jon takes my car out as 18th qualifier and sets FAST TIME. Tom Hunt, son of Joe Hunt Magneto's is the pit steward. He comes over to me and tells me our time don't count because the exhaust noise was over 95 decibels. He says “you have to get it quieter Larry, or you can't run”, and “you have to re-qualify with it quieter”. This is Tucson, AZ A ¼ mile dirt track, we can't go out until 65 cars have qualified, and the track is gone! Fortunately I had a carton of 0000 steel wool with us, we drilled the header collector on each side, stuffed 6 pads on each side and sent him back out. He qualified 22nd car into the main! He started 22nd and finished 8th. (P.J. won it, started in front). Who knows what person was holding the decibel meter? Tom Hunt drove for me several times, before he retired as a driver. Joe Hunt his dad was a good friend and wanted me to buy his Indy 500 chassis, (that's another story) so some one else made sure we were not front row starters. 9.) REMEMBER: If the blacks don't do good, they will need help from the rule book! Ok, girls, did you skip all of the above? Well lets remember, its 1946 and I'm home, single, driving my 1934 Ford 4 Door. I bought it from “Mt Angel Mike” who had put a Winfield ¾ grind cam in the old flat head. You either bought a “3/4” or a “full race” grind from Winfield. So I was a fast kid in town. Salem had about 29,000 people not such a big deal. So now we get to Rosemary, she was 2 years older than me, and worked for the telephone company. Long honey blonde hair to the middle of her back. Hazel eyes and had a figure that would have been a runway model these days! She always wore those 3 or 4 inch hi heels and hose with the seam in the back! Pineapple wasn't born yet, so I can continue. Those of us that were returning Vets from WWII hung out at the Buccaneer Tavern. The owner was ex GI also, and didn't care if you were under 21 as long as you were a Vet. So, I'm setting at the bar, its about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and I'm arguing with myself as to which young lady to call first. I'm looking to my right at the juke box and I hear the door open to my left, and some one sits down on the stool next to me. I haven't turned around to see who it is, but the aroma of Chanel #5 hits my nose, so now I'm curious. I swing the stool around, and there sets Rosemary! She's smiling and has her legs crossed at the knee. Big brother Marston always told me “if they cross their legs at the ankle or the calf, you are out of business “but if they cross them at the knee its an open suggestion they are interested! Remember, this is 1946, that's the way it was! “Your Loren aren't you”? she asked softly. “Sure am, but how did you know”? I replied. “I work with your brother at Ma Bell (Pacific Bell & Tell) and he says you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner here”. She said smiling. I bought us a drink, (in Salem, Ore) you left BYOB at the bar, they glued a sticker on it and put your name on it. She said one of her girl friends from work dropped her and told her the black 34 Sedan with the white hood side panels was mine.

I looked at her in the eye and said “you want to go with me over to West Salem to the Mellow Moon?” “Good idea” she replied, because I live in West Salem, but lets go to the Pine Tree Inn instead”. I looked at her and mentioned they didn't have a bar, only a restaurant and rooms. She laughed again and murmured “so I'm not hungry are you?” I will always remember Room #12, I rented it quite a few times, cost was four dollars if you lived in Salem and left before 6 a.m. The reason I always use “Larry” instead of Loren is because if you fill out the entry blank for the race as Loren they send it back with a note that females are not allowed to race, or be in the pits.

The wise man avoids trouble unless he can't. There are those who are never content, never since life and racing began, but others who win, smile with the eyes of man. Keep it between the fences Larry Dunham usaclarry@yahoo.com

I'm driving precious out 603 to “Good to Go” run by Gordon and friends. Larry insisted I drive him out there, (even tho he hates my “Rice Rocket” as he calls it). So, he is going to take photo's of the property and my job is to drive? Well, on the way we hear a large “clung” like we ran over a metal can or something, but all seemed well and shortly there after I turned into “Good to Go” and started to park. Tony who was at the front desk was looking out the glass front doors and hollered, “you got a flat on the right rear”. Unfortunately he was right. Tony came out, slid a jack under it, took the wheel off, put on the spare, and rushed back in to answer the phone. Larry had on his white shirt and dress slacks, so he was happy Tony changed the tire. You will see their ad back by the classifieds. We went to Discount Tire one block west on 90 past Waveland Ave. and ordered a tire. Since they said it would be 30 minutes or so, before they got the tire, and it was after 11 a.m I thought we should drive over to my favorite El Maguys Mexican Resturant on Hwy 90. (see their ad) I called Jim Mitchell (who owns the Red Rooster Resort on Waveland Ave) to join us. (check his web sight out) We had glass of wine and talked to Juan the owner. He has a great manager & staff but, he still shows up every day and greets his customers. I hope all of you had a very “Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. I wish y'all the very best. On Thanksgiving day we went over to Sam's VFW POST 4808 in Lakeshore, MS (see their ad) Every year Sam has a giant Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year spread! We plan on going there for Christmas! Well it's Thursday morning and I've a got a busy day. Since Larry left early to see Jimbo in Gulfport I decided to have my favorite breakfast. Spam, Steamed Rice & Eggs Hawaiian Style. When Larry is home he opens all the windows to get the smell of spam out! My cat EASY loves Spam. Today I'm headed for Dempsey's and the new restaurant called POPS in the Kiln, used to be Saw'd off, Reds Pub, Cowboys and Angels. I jump into Precious (300 ZX) and turn on my Christmas CD of Don Ho's Christmas Songs. Don Ho is a famous Hawaiian artist. My first stop is POP'S. I talked to Daphine the owner. She said they have just been open 3 days. They have liquor and beer and wine. She is serving Southern Comfort Food. They have Lunch Specials, Seafood Platters, Croissants & Classics. She said they are open Mon. 11-2, Tues-Thurs. 11-9, Fri-Sat 11 -10 closed Sunday. My next stop was to see Diane the Owner of Dempsey's and her new Da Swamp Shack Gift Shop. I stopped at the bar for a glass of wine and checked out the menu. If you like turtle soup it's on her menu! I then walked over to her Gift Shop. They have a great display of jewelry. Also Al Saucier collector edition. Outside she has all kinds of things for your front yard. I think this is worth the drive to eat at Dempsey's and browse her gift shop. (see their ad) I head on home and picked up Larry and we head for the VFW in Bay St. Louis. Bobby was not in sight and believe it or not Mike was not in sight. Star and Buger were in charge. Kind of scary. We did not stay to long. We went back on Friday and Mike was cooking. Bobby was supervising. Bobby told me the Ladies Aux. was having a open car show Feb. 23rd at 208 Third St., Bay St. Louis. This is the first annual. I think 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. See Events & Shows in this magazine. Friday I decided to stop and check out S & B's Grill, 814 Sears Ave., Waveland, MS. Beas, who hangs out the VFW in BSL said they have the best Roast Beef Po-boy. Per, Beas this place has been here for ever. They rebuilt after Katrina. All locals go there. I walked in and was surprised how big it was. When you walk in they have 14 tables and two long tables for 7-9 people. To your left in back of the building next to the kitchen they have a big 12 stool bar. Behind the bar they two 32 inch TV'S. This place is a secret hide a way. They serve beer. I decided to have the Roast Beef Po-Boy and it was great! Thelma (bartender at Tiffin Room in Gulfport) you and your friends will love this place. and your friends like to come to Bay St. Louis and find different restaurants. You gals will love this place. I was not going to talk about Hawaii this time and give all you readers a break. But, I can't help it. In the Nov. issue I had picture of one of our best friends in Hawaii Ben Chapman. He was the original Creature From The Black Lagoon. I found this picture of us and Benny. He is standing, Larry is 6` and you can see how big he was. This picture was at my favorite hotel. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel the 2nd oldest hotel in Waikiki.
