“HANG ON BABE.. NO BRAKES!!!” …. not much time to go to plan “B”.. as I put the shifter into low gear and pull up the emergency brake handle.. The car is slowing down a little but not like it should. Now I’m reaching down to pull the brake peddle up.. pump it a few times by hand all the while wondering what if the street rod I’m following stops short. Ever happen to you? I gotta’ think this is something every streetrodder plans for. Every driver of any type vehicle should at least think they will react to an emergency in time. When I took the motorcycle riders course we were taught to always have the escape route. Someplace to put your bike just in case. Not always possible but I always planned. My streetrod is a lot bigger than the ol’ Harley. But the principal, whatcha-gona-do-if? is still the same… I went to a carshow earlier in the day and there was a Coast Cruizers dinner run that afternoon. I stopped by and picked up Nancy and we headed out to meet up with other club members. All seemed fine. Lot’s of stopping power at each light. Highway speeds and slowdowns normal. And then it happens. We are on a two lane road, slowing down to make the turn into the campground where the restaurant is. There is a ditch on passenger side, poles at the gate, and the back of street rod slowing down in front of me. “Hang on babe, no brakes”… I was lucky all went well. Plenty of room to slow it down to a crawl. We parked and being the guy’s we are it gave us something to talk about while we wolfed down Catfish & fries. Brake cylinder?, master cylinder?, what was the cause? Long story short, the pictures tell the story. Thanks to Rodney Holliman for finding this. Even though the rear brake lines were kept in place with factory keepers and the coil-over's weren't rubbing them when they were installed that didn’t protect the lines from the springs as they pinched the line while driving. There were a lot of “what if’s” that went thru my mind after everything was fixed and I was once again behind the wheel of my favorite ride. But I settled for this…. what if I take a little more time to inspect my car. ……. Jimbo

I've used it all of my married life, as my Mom always told me it was the best. Now that I am in my fifties I find it even better! In fact, about a month ago, I spilled some red wine on my new white blouse. My inconsiderate and uncaring husband started to belittle me about how clumsy I was, and generally started becoming a pain in the neck. One thing led to another and somehow I ended up with his blood on my new white blouse! I grabbed my bottle of Tide with bleach alternative, to my surprise and satisfaction, all of the stains came out! In fact, the stains came out so well the detectives who came by yesterday told me that the DNA tests on my blouse were negative and then my attorney called and said that I was no longer considered a suspect in the disappearance of my husband. What a relief! Going through menopause is bad enough without being a murder suspect! I sure am thankful that Tide is such a great product. Well, gotta go, have to write to the Hefty bag people. Anonymous Jimbo, Our recently married daughter sent her mother the following recipe. (this is not her first marriage...wonder why) Here is a chicken recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a stuffing. Imagine that. When I found it, I thought it was perfect for people like me, who just are not sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out. Give this a try. BAKED STUFFED CHICKEN 6-7 lb. chicken 1 cup melted butter 1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good) 1 cup uncooked popcorn (Orville Redenbacher low fat) Salt/ Pepper to taste Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush chicken well with melted butter, salt and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of oven.

I went to get my car keys out of my pocket, they weren't there. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot.

My husband has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car's ignition. He's afraid that the car could be stolen. As I looked around the parking lot, I realized he was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most difficult call of all to my husband: "I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen." There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice. "Are you kidding me?" he barked, "I dropped you off!" Now it was my turn to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me." He retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this cop that I didn't steal your damn car!" (Lower Alabama) recently with two ice chests of fish, leaving a small lake well known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, "Do you have a license to catch those fish?" "Naw, my friend, I ain't got no license...don't really need one, nope. These here are my pet fish." "Pet fish?" "Yep....pert' near every night I take em' here fish down to the lake and let em' swim 'round for a while. Then I whistle and they jump rat back into this here ice chest and I take em' home." "That's a bunch of hooey! Fish can't do that!" The young fella looked at the game warden for a moment and then said, "It's the truth my friend. I'll show you. It really works." "Okay, I've GOT to see this!" The young fella poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to him and said, "Well?" "Well, what?" said the fella. "When are you going to call them back?" "Call who back?" "The FISH!" "What fish?" September Old Town Spring, TX 32nd Annual Longhorn Rod Run features classic cars in a historical setting. Vintage car lovers can step back in time walking the streets talking to the antique car owners and getting a chance to peak underneath the hoods. Various categories for prizes and awards are given to owners of the hot rods that line the shady shop lined streets. This truly is a local favorite.

The 18th annual Camellia car show June 6th hosted by the Coastal Cruisers was well put together and organized many awards were given out with the Misfits Street Krewzers taking home club precipitation with 19 cars. And as always the 1st. Saturday cruisin at Edgewater Mall hosted by the Coast Cruisers had nice turnout with good music, and lots of places to eat. Just remember to get out and ride. Last month I listed a few places that were know for the poboy 's. I received one after the magazine was sent to be printed. Ronnie Puls of Tickaw, La sent in one. The place is called Boostin Loose PoBoys and Snowballs. Ronnie says it has the original delicious HI HO Sam's Barbeque PoBoys. So if you are that way stop and try one. I will the next time I get that way. The 30th of May the Coast Cruizers had a dinner cruise up to Stone county. We had a group of 14 go to the Catfish Cabin out on hyw 26 West - Lumberton, MS. 601 928-7755 This place is at Lake Toc-O-Leen RV park and camping. The restaurant is run by the same people that have the Whistle Stop in Wiggins. The restaurant is right on the lake. The deck is over the water where you can feed the fish, if you saved a hush puppy from your dinner. The food is great.! You can get the regular catfish or fried shrimp, it’s a little spicy..to some, so if you don’t want it spicy tell them and they'll use a batter that doesn't have spice. If you want boiled shrimp with corn and potatoes you get the spice, it’s in the shrimp boil. There is the all you can eat catfish platter or there are platters that you can get half and half. You can get fish, shrimp, oysters, rib-eye steaks along with a few other things. The batter on the fish and fried shrimp looks and taste like the Zateran's fish fry. One thing you don't want to miss is the fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes are cut thin and fried in a light batter. Best I have had in a long time. The comments I got from the people who ate the steak said it was one of the best they have had in a long time. I don't know I’m a catfish eater. This is the first dinner cruise that we had a vehicle problem. Jimbo had a problem. Look for it in the magazine. The restaurant in only open on Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 9pm. It is best to go early because it can get crowed. Till we eat again J. R.

Set out this morning, kind of late, for the 18th edition of the Camellia City Classic car show put on by the Coastal Cruisers. Very good turnout even though it was Hot. As always these folks put on a heck of a show, spun some good tunes, met some good folks and had a good time all while helping the local Make A Wish organization. I know these folks will be able to make some wishes come true because of what was raised today. Great job Coastal Cruisers and a thanks to all that participated. They gave out some great looking awards too I might add. And a side note The Misfits won the club participation award over 18 in attendance. Later for now and get em out and ride em. Gizmo

April 11th Was the Boulevard Cruisers spring show. The weather did not cooperate that Saturday but it was a good show. I gave the NSRA merit award to Nick Sherlock. He has a 46 Chevy truck that he built. He has a vanity tag with Nick 46. This is a little late because the picture I had was deleted from my phone. It took a while to catch up with him at another show. It was worth the wait.

Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year.

Saturday, June 6, 2015 Uptown Station - Fort Walton Beach, Florida The Gulf Coast chapter of Unaffiliates Mopar Club hosted their first event sponsored by LEE Automotive to help out Children In Crisis. Mopar Mania 2015 assembled at the Uptown Station shopping center in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Mopar enthusiasts from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana gathered together for this great cause. Sixty eight cars registered for this first time event and $1,400 was raised for Children in Crisis. Mopars from the 1960’s to present day were represented, including three 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcats. Children in Crisis is a non-profit charity committed to “Establishing homes and providing hope” for the abused, neglected and abandoned children of the community. The Children’s Neighborhood provides an emergency shelter for young children and family foster homes that augment the shortage of foster homes available in our community. The Gulf Coast chapter of Unaffiliates Mopar Club was established in 2013. There is no discrimination and no drama. Just the love of all things Mopar. They welcome all who share the same passion. They are a family orientated club and welcome any and all Mopars to join them. Mopar Mania 2015 was well attended by spectators and everyone that came out and supported Children in Crisis had a great time. Plans are already in the works for the 2nd annual Mopar Mania in 2016. Making the world a better place for veterans everywhere, is Heels For Combat Boots, a non‐profit organization of over 200 pinup models paying it forward. In addition to raising money, we attend events in our area, donating our time and helping to raise money for veterans. You may remember my brief mention of this organization in November’s article, however I wanted to share more about what we are doing and why there is such a need for this organization, especially since June was PTSD awareness month. You may not realize just how many people are living with PTSD or TBIs, as some wounds are not visible. Post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event; either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Many people who go through traumatic events have difficulty adjusting and coping for a while, however they do not have PTSD. With time and good self‐care, they usually get better. Nonetheless, if the symptoms get worse or last for months, or even years, and interfere with your functioning, you may have PTSD. People who experience assault‐based trauma are more likely to develop PTSD. Children are less likely to experience PTSD after trauma than adults, especially if they are less than ten years of age. War veterans are commonly at risk for PTSD. Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop can be critical to reduce symptoms and improve function. Once known as shell shock, a vague condition affecting war veterans, PTSD is now recognized as an anxiety disorder brought on by a traumatic event. It was first documented in WWI. Approximately 7.8% of Americans and 20% of veterans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. It has been noted in every American war, but it was only recognized as a distinct disorder in the 1980's. Yet records of PTSD exist from as many as 2500 years ago.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex injury with a broad spectrum of symptoms and disabilities. The impact on a person and his or her family can be devastating. Traumatic brain injuries can increase suicidal thoughts and behavior. I feel that the most important reason to raise awareness is because every 80 minutes, 1 veteran dies by suicide! That is an unfortunate and I feel, unnecessary statistic when it could likely be prevented by increasing awareness, improving the quality of life for veterans living with these conditions and eliminating the stigma associated with this injury. Twenty percent of the national suicides are completed by veterans. According to psychiatry.org, more military deaths were by suicide than in combat in 2012, putting military suicides at their highest rate in 10 years. Eight percent to twenty percent of the military personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan experienced a traumatic brain injury. Studies report that as many as two thirds of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffering from PTSD may not be receiving treatment. With 7% of the American population being veterans, some are denied care for their condition while others do not seek treatment due to the fear that it will hurt their careers, leading to lost confidence and respect from colleagues or bosses. They are also concerned about the side effects of medications and the cost and effectiveness of therapy. Regrettably, there are currently over 200,000 homeless veterans. According to onlinemilitaryeducation.com, over 300,000 U.S. Troops who served in Iraq or Afghanistan have PTSD. Traumatic experiences in the military include seeing dead bodies, sexual harassment, being shot at and killing people, being ambushed and worrying about family. Combat is not the only source of PTSD in the military; 55% of women in the military have experienced sexual assault while serving. Unfortunately only 23% of the cases are ever reported. Since veterans’ worst wounds may be the ones you cannot see, Heels For Combat Boots is trying to improve their lives. First let me introduce you to the lady that started it all, my friend and fellow Alaskan native, Kati Sorensen, known in the industry as Riskay Business. A South Carolina based model, originally from Chugiak, Alaska. As Kati says, “I have participated in pinup, tattoo, fetish, glamour, fashion, underwater, goth, the dark, commercial, products and even quite a few runway shows despite my 5 foot 3 stature. I am a licensed hair stylist, barber and makeup artist by day, as well as the Founder and President of the organization, Heels For Combat Boots, which reaches out to assist veterans with PTSD and TBI. After such a successful first year, I am filing for our full 501(c) 3 and have opened up 39 chapters across the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia. While my everyday look consists of six inch stilettos, red lipstick and styled hair, I am also an avid hunter and fisherman, and I am known to know my way around an engine. I owe that thanks to my best friend and father, who solely raised me. I spend a lot of time on the road traveling for the nonprofit with my service dog, an English Bull Terrier named Adalie or 'pig', attending veteran events both hosted and supported by HFCB. I was personally diagnosed with PTSD a little over four years ago. They are also throwing the term TBI around now. While growing up in Alaska I was constantly around our service members and always witnessed horror stories of how our members were being treated. It was after I was diagnosed myself, that I noticed the true misunderstanding the general public has as to what PTSD and TBI really are. Most just relate it to “being crazy” when it is quite the contrary. PTSD & TBI’s affect every single aspect of your life and being. Things that you used to enjoy, like a family BBQ, can become too much; flashing or bright lights or loud noises can affect you also. While my PTSD & possible TBI are not service related, I can still relate to certain items and situations setting me off. Stained glass is one many are always curious about. Bringing awareness and hopefully some assistance to those that are affected is truly all that I want and hope to do.”

Kati’s idea for Heels For Combat Boots began with the idea of having a book full of pinups in classic military dress in addition to photos and stories from service members themselves, with all of the proceeds going to various 501(c) 3 organizations. In just the first month of its creation, there was such an abundance of support and desire to be a part of it that Kati, AKA Riskay Business, decided to go forward with setting up an organization. She started planning the book in late December of 2013 and by February 28, 2014, HFCB became fully licensed as a Nonprofit in the state of Colorado. It started small, with VA visits in which the girls went to hang out with the vets, handed out free signed prints, helping organizations with their veteran BBQ's and poker runs and doing care packages. It evolved into assisting in financial aid for mental and physical treatments, and sponsoring veteran hunting and fishing trips. HFCB correspondingly just branched into another section called Operation Tag Me Home; when items are found from past wars (recent as well), we will do everything in our power to return the items to the original owner and/or their surviving family members. We have had some wonderful success already! It started when Kati came across some WWII dog tags in an antique store. She and her friend purchased the tags for $75. After looking at the tags for the next few days, she decided to try and research the tags. She was able to find the veteran’s information from during and after the war, as well as locate his children and grandchildren, who were extremely thankful to receive the items. This vet in particular, actually went on to medical school after his time in the service and really did some remarkable things with his life! Some of the other items she has been able to return are books, more tags and uniforms. The organization has already gone far beyond anything that she originally thought was possible. In the first year HFCB has expanded across the United States, Australia, Canada and Europe, opening 39 chapters, 36 of which are in the U.S. and 3 internationally. As for the future of HFCB, well the sky is most certainly the limit. Recognizing mental illness is the first step toward recovery. It is important to show returning soldiers that seeking help is a sign of strength. WHEEL TECH -Offset The offset can be one of three types (measured in millimeters).* "The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel." Zero Offset The hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel. Positive The hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars. Negative The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheel's centerline. "Deep dish" wheels are typically a negative offset. If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. Often, when changing the width of the wheel, the offset will also need to change to maintain proper clearances inside the wheel well. If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. For most cars, this won't work correctly. Shay replica

’35 Chevy street rod When I am out and about I am always amazed at the kindness afforded by the & Mike Doran people in this old car hobby. A recent visit to the home of Mike and Lisa Doran was no exception. Mike and Lisa have a Shay that was titled in 1984. ( For those who are not familiar, Harry Shay started building vehicles using Ford Model A platforms supplied by Ford Motor Company in 1978. Shay built the cars and they were sold by Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln dealerships, and warranted by Ford. The limit on manufacture was 10,000 vehicles.) This is a replica of a 1929 Model A Roadster, with a more modern 4 cylinder, automatic transmission, and Mustang II steering. I also viewed a 1933 Chevrolet 2 dr. sedan that is an outstanding original example of this model. It was restored in 2000 and Lisa says this is her favorite car. They also have a 1935 Chevy street rod with a 350/350 drivetrain, ps, pb, pw, air, and cruise. It also has etched glass, custom interior, and custom paint. Mike currently has this one for sale. The discovery of a 1951 Crosley Super Sport really caught my interest. While many often regard the Corvette as the first American Sports car, it was the Crosley with its two doors, two seats, overhead cam engine with disc brakes that was raced as a production model in many races of the era long before the Corvette appeared. This is a rare car as they were only manufactured for a few years and it is in excellent condition. The difference between this model and the Hotshot is that this model has doors, a top, and Super Sport scripted in chrome on the front fenders. Otherwise, it is the same car. Next to Super Sport I discovered a Crosley racing engine that will be installed into a three quarter midget as soon as the car is completed. The engine is completed and ready to race. I was surprised to find a 1970’s era sprint car with a 350 c.i. engine and a transmission that features 2 speeds forward and one in reverse. This car appeared to be wider than I remember, but keep in mind that Cubby’s memory has lapses from time to time. In the racing theme, there was a 1980 full midget that runs on gasoline and a 1958 three quarter midget with fuel injected Crosley power running on alcohol. Also in this garage are housed: a 46” high wheel bike, a smaller high wheel bike, approximately 125 pedal cars, tractors, and ride-ons, and additional interesting memorabilia. I was truly in awe! Space doesn’t permit me to do justice to this collection, but I thank Mike and Lisa Doran for letting me view it. It is truly amazing!

The Hot Rod Power Tour made a stop in Gulfport, MS at Centennial Plaza on the beach, Hwy 90 on Thursday June 11. The cars kept coming and coming and coming. Over 6,000 cars in all on this year’s Power Tour, the largest road trip in the world and over 1,500 miles. Local/regional cars also joined in for the day for a $45 fee. The cost to join the entire tour is only $125. The real cost is in gas, hotels and meals. The 21st annual Hot Rod Power Tour started in Madison, Wisconsin on June 6 and followed the Mississippi River, in concept anyway, all the way down to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is a traveling carnival of major car supply vendors…from Auto Zone to Edelbrock, all with major mid-way type 18 wheeler setups, canopy’s and tents that you see at a large car event or a NASCAR race. Along the way they made stops in Champaign, IL, Madison, IL (right out St. Louis), Memphis, TN, Birmingham, AL, Gulfport, MS, and finally Baton Rouge, LA. The day was extremely hot… The Power Tour was enjoyable...plenty to see and look at with vendors everywhere …it did involve a lot of walking. Only Power Tour cars were allowed into Centennial Plaza, so I had parked on a side street about a block away and walked in. The walk was at least a half mile. Once inside, I had to cover the entire area for photos and seeing all the cars, so there was a lot of walking. In the mid-day sun I thought I was going to pass out from heat exhaustion before I got back to my truck. But it was great to see all the cars and pageantry of The Hot Rod Power Tour. In talking with some of the long haulers, (that’s what they call the drivers of these cars that go from start to finish, getting their paperwork stamped at each location), Gulfport was one of the nicest stops they made. They loved the majestic oaks, the shade and the coastline. They had seen a lot of just plain asphalt at most of their stops; you have to have a place big enough to hold that many cars. Hwy 90 and the MS Coast beach was an unexpected pleasure. I think we made a good impression on a lot of these folks that had never been to the Coast before. When they looked at their map and saw Gulfport, MS, they had no idea what they were coming to. I’m sure some of these cruiser’s will come back for Cruisin The Coast. Although they were here for less than an entire day and gone, it is an awesome adventure and one I will daydream about participating in one day. Dirt Track Memories

by: Larry Dunham Well, it's July, and the 24th this month I'm turning 88, only pal I got left is C.J. who writes for "Pineapples Beach Press". From Feb. to July he is 2 years older than me 87 after this month he is 1 year (89) older. Also, this month brings up John (Jack) Guttormson who died a few years ago on my birthday, July 24th. He was one of the old time midget drivers, his son Mitch you can read about in AutoracingMemories.Com. It comes out every month on the internet, has articles on Australia, and New Zealand. Mitch was a midget driver, as was his dad, and he writes features on the old racers, in addition to the latest. Speaking of the latest, he e -mailed me about the new frames (sprint & midget) that are being built in "China"!! Who was the original designer I don't know, but I'd bet he was under 40 years old. A year or so I had a sprint car builder and owner of a machine and welding shop (along with running 2 sprint cars) in " USAC Western" series, repair my Halibrand midget quick change rear-end. All of the front runners run these "Chinese" chassis, and were having big problems putting the 500 or more horsepower to the ground turning left. On the phone (he is in AZ where my midget is in storage), he tells me the roll cage, and front down bars, make it an 8 point chassis. (very rigid, worse than trying to run a pavement car on dirt). Leland McSpadden, a very great midget driver from the late 60's & 70’s and very sharp about chassis set up, was helping him try to get it to handle by raising the left motor mounts with shims. This would help with engine torque to transfer weight to the right rear, (but no help getting ‘in’ the corner) off the corner! YES, Mitch, you know where I'm going with this, but here goes: Frank Kurtis, Eddie Kuzma, Quin Epperly, Johnny Pawl, Geo. Shilala, Clint Brawner, Don Edmunds, (don't remember Helliugas or Dryers 1st names, but all were great chassis builders, and including myself were what I call 3 point suspension people. (Builders) set-up. Basics were as follows: Ackerman steering on the front wheels. This consisted primarily of smaller left front wheel by 10 to 20%. Left wheels base 1/16 to 1/8 shorter than right wheel base. Left front out 1/16 to 1/8 from straight. With a solid front axle due to the size of the right front, 25 to 50 lbs. of weight, heavier than left front and left front rises 6" to 12" in the corner. This action transfers the weight diagonally to the right rear to "get in" and "get off" the turn. Now if you wish to have the "safety" of the Chinese chassis, (which to me in an "off road"

dirt chassis) you could do the following to start out the modifications. 1. Front down bars - Put a heim joint on right front down bar. Put 1/4 inch larger diameter tube on left front with 1 1/4 space to allow left front to lift one foot. (these are approximates). 2. Mid chassis roll bar (engine plate area) have 1" inside, same type dia as left front with 1" lift clearance. 3. The "down bars" will have "clearances of larger tube at top of roll cage. They tell me the roll cages now go to the rear of the frame. I've been told that most chassis are "ladder frame" dual tube frames. Any fixed point from the rear engine plate is probably ok. A diagonal bar above the drivers head across the cockpit roll cage will help weight transfer, and protect the driver if down on track with the opening facing on coming traffic I go back a long ways, here’s a photo of the only 6 wheel Indy car that Danny Burke and I worked on in Memphis. Don Edmunds and I worked on many Indy chassis in 1955 and 56.

The car #41 (Greenman Casale) was 16th at the finish of 33 cars entered. We were most happy to have "been there, done that" and bigger things than "Indy" just didn't happen back then!

In closing I might add that in 1944 and '45 I was in WWII Seabees 15th Battalion Okinawa 1945, and our "Mascot" was actress Virginia Mayo, who also became the trophy girl at 1956 Indy 500.

Occasionally, I venture back to NAS, Meridian, where I'm greeted by an imposing security guard who looks carefully at my identification card, hands it back and says, "Have a good day, Sr. Chief". Every time I go back to any Navy Base it feels good to be called by my previous rank, but odd to be in civilian clothes, walking among the servicemen and servicewomen going about their duties as I once did, many years ago. The military is a comfort zone for anyone who has ever worn the uniform. It's a place where you know the rules and know they are enforced - a place where everybody is busy, but not too busy to take care of business. Because there exists behind the gates of every military facility an institutional understanding of respect, order, uniformity, accountability and dedication that becomes part of your marrow and never, ever leaves you. Personally, I miss the fact that you always knew where you stood in the military, and who you were dealing with. That's because you could read somebody's uniform from 20 feet away and know the score. Service personnel wear their careers on their sleeves, so to speak. When you approach each other, you can read their name tag, examine their rank and, if they are in dress uniform, read their ribbons and know where they've served. I miss all those little things you take for granted when you're in the ranks, like breaking starch on a set of fatigues fresh from the laundry and standing in a perfectly straight line military formation that looks like a mirror as it stretches to the endless horizon.

I miss the sight of troops marching in the early morning mist, the sound of boot heels thumping in unison on the tarmac, the bark of drill instructors and the sing-song answers from the squads as they pass by in review. To romanticize military service is to be far removed from its reality, because it's very serious business -- especially in times of war. But I miss the salutes I'd throw at officers and the crisp returns as we criss-crossed with a "by your leave sir". I miss the smell of jet fuel hanging heavily on the night air and the sound of engines roaring down runways and disappearing into the clouds. The same while on carrier duty. I even miss the hurry-up-and-wait mentality that enlisted men gripe about constantly, a masterful invention that bonded people more than they'll ever know or admit. I miss people taking off their hats when they enter a building, speaking directly and clearly to others and never showing disrespect for rank, race, religion or gender. Mostly, I miss being a small cog in a machine so complex it constantly circumnavigates the Earth and so simple it feeds everyone on time, three times a day, on the ground, in the air or at sea. Mostly, I don't know anyone who has served who regrets it, and doesn't feel a sense of pride when they pass through those gates and re-enter the world they left behind with their youth. I wish I could express my thoughts as well about something I loved -- and hated sometimes. Face it guys - we all miss it...Whether you had one tour or a career, it shaped your life. Don't sell your mule to buy a plow. Don't corner something meaner than you. It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. You can't unsay a cruel thing. Every path has some puddles. Don't judge people by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a raindance. It's better to be a has-been than a never-was. The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'. If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't. It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep. Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got. The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with watches you shave in his mirror every morning.

Always drink upstream from the herd. If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya.

The Spirit of the American Trucker By Art Czajkowski Posted in: The Spirit of the American Trucker May 2015

In 1944 an American Soldier named Justus T. Schreiber (that’s right, his name was Justus, just like “liberty and justice for all”) fought in a little known WW-II battle in Europe where 400 men stood for five days against two German Panzer Divisions in an operation known as “Parkers Crossroads”. By doing this, they gave other Allied units time to regroup – a tactic known as an “Alamo Defense” – a rigid resistance of a position carried out to the utter destruction of the unit with the objective of forcing the enemy to expend significant amounts of men, materials, and time. Mr. Schreiber was one of very few who survived, and this veteran celebrated the American Bicentennial with a special flag… In 1976 Bryan Levernier (a.k.a. “Foxfire Cummins”) celebrated 200 years of the USA by buying this legendary, special-edition rig (only 100 were made) to become a truly free man – a proud owner operator and businessman. In the 70s, independent men were still the soil of this land, which is why National Socialism never stood a chance here – no need for government when people are strong enough to control their own lives. The American Trucker is a self-made man who works hard and needs no social welfare program in order to survive. He simply must be left alone to do his job. He must take care of his customers and his rig, as well – which is what Foxfire Cummins has done since 1976. Today, he still drives his 1976 “Patriot” Peterbilt and has logged four million accident-free miles – and it is still going strong. In 2006 I bought my first and last Peterbilt. I came from Poland, where we tried hard to stand against Hitler and then Stalin as much as we could, but these evil socialist dictators were already too strong to overcome. Once in control, they made every citizen just a little gear in a big, inefficient, grinding machine. I ran away to “the promised land” where guys like Foxfire were still roaming free. I followed their advice and worked hard and became part of this great country. For the past nine years, I have provided for my family and been independent, just like the old truckers said I needed to be – and I never took one dime from the government. Some people believe now that my still new truck and reefer are “expired” and that I need to buy a new one or go get a driving job at a big fleet. Well, wait a second, I know this talk… that’s exactly what I was running from in Poland… now they wanna steal my dreams again! But I’m 42, so I will be okay. Question is: what will happen to all those kids we have? Where are they going to go to find the “freedom of choice” in their lives? Asia? I think not!! If the government gets its way, hard-working trucks like Foxfire’s will be taken off the road and sent to the scrap heap, even though they can still earn their keep. What a shame that would be. What is happening to freedom and the American Dream? We took this cool photo, which includes Old Glory (the actual flag Justus T. Schreiber used to celebrate America’s bicentennial back in 1976), the soon-to-be-outlawed “Patriot” Peterbilt, and my still new but “expired” reefer trailer, to show that these things are still valuable and still worth fighting to keep. We all need to stand together for the future of our country. Thank God we don’t have to fight like Justus T. Schreiber did, but we do need to do something. Whether it be to join an organization, contribute to a group, attend a hearing, or whatever, please find a way to get involved and join the fight. Make a stand. Be a part of the solution – while you still can!

That's common sense leaving your body. 6. I don't like making plans for the day. Because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom. 7. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes 1,500 days in a row. 8. I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. 9. Dear paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers. If you find one, what's your plan? 10. Everyone has a right to be stupid. Politicians just abuse the privilege

It departs and ends back at Badger Harley Davidson, Madison, Wisconsin. The cause is to raise money for wounded veterans and their families. Last year they raise over $90,000.00. This year the flag arrives the MS Gulf Coast on 2-3 July (Thur and Fri). On 2 July, Pensacola HOG chapter will be escorting the flag over to us. This will be our big day with the flag. On 3 July we will escort the flag over to Baton Rouge HD/HOG. We will pick up many riders on the way from Northshore in Slidell and Hammond HD. Last year we had Pensacola HOG, MS Coast HOG, and many other local motorcycle clubs and riders from all around the area join in. We had at or about 87 bikes parade down hwy 90 to the Armed Forces Retirement Center with flags flying. We had a really great day. 40

One night, last week, I told my ole lady, that she forgot to iron my shirt like I asked her to and I needed it for tonight. She said, “I would have you know, I had a long 10 hr. day at work but when I got home, while you sat in your recliner watching tv with your feet propped up, I cooked you a real nice meal, cleared the table, put everything away, washed and dried the dishes, and now I’m doing your dirty laundry!!” I said, “woman, by the time it took you to say all of that, you could have ironed my shirt for me.” Just keepin it real ! Lately, my ole lady has been acting a little goofy. Seems she is asking me all kind of trick question, like, does this outfit look nice on me? Or, After all of these years, do you think I am still pretty? Or, Do you really love me? Or, If you had it all to do over again, would you marry me? I said, “women, I thought I settled all of that, years ago at the altar, when I said, I do”. I went on over to the big N.O. last month. You know the Crescent City. They might as well call it Rip Off City if you ask me. Everything was so insanely expensive. I ordered a poor boy, $25, Barqs rootbeer, $5, praline, $4. parking, $25, I was only there for 2 hrs. Now I know why they have so many street performers and pan handlers over there. They all once were tourists, went broke, now they are just trying to make enough money to get out of there. We have heard the phrase, “The Ultimate Sacrifice” used in many different ways. To me, it means someone lost their life in a deliberate act so that someone else might live.
