Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo The second weekend of May Nancy & I found ourselves in Houston, Texas. We went to visit family, but at the same time they just happen to be an art car show in downtown Houston. This was the 27th annual Art Car Parade sponsored by Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Now if you've never been to an art car show it's kind of hard to explain exactly what it is, but I would say it's much like a Mardi Gras parade, only it's based around automobiles that have been decorated with everything that you can imagine. I went to the Houston art car show Who was Marilyn Monroe's last husband? website to get a little history of how it started and who started it and what I could expect. Jimbo, I just wanted to let you know the Bama Coast Cruise was a huge success this year! We packed out Main Street at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama and had a beautiful show with 500 cars! We are now in the "wrap up" stage of our event and, we will get you an article and pictures for Gulf Coast MotorSports soon. We have some great shots of the show -Thank you, Deborah McLean Vice President / Motorsports Productions, Inc. As usual time has run out and it’s the deadline to get this magazine off to the printer but, before I do I just want to say….. It’s all about havin’ fun and for most of us it’s good friends, good music, good food, kool cars and Great Cruizin’. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida offers some of the best cruising and shows the good ol’ U.S.A. has. And that’s why we are the Coast Cruizers. Till next month… Jimbo www.CoastCruizers.com

Jimbo, As you know it started as a 3 Window Coupe, Just a small block 350 Chevy, and a 700 trans. Just an open drive 8” Ford rear and a 350 gear. Lots of shinny stuff on the motor. I sold the coupe body bought a Roadster body and spent a year doing mods and paint and body prep. As a roadster nothing changed running gear wise its still the same car but now a what I like to call Roaster.

Its got a Sid Chavers Bop Top and an interior by Bryants Custom Upholstery, and Mark Gillis with Nomad Grafix did the striping on both the roadster and coupe. I built it you could say 3 times. Frame paint by me. Wiring by me. Stainless and Chrome front end all links and rods are stainless. Stainless A.N. brake lines and fuel lines by me. Roadster paint by me. Coupe body was painted by others. The underside of the roadster is finish painted and clear coated too. After all of that work I just gave up on painting the body. As you can see changing the wheels makes it a whole different car. Still want to send you a front and rear view to do a custom T shirt for me. Thanks Jimbo. Later Glen

April 26th, Sharon and I went over to Hammond, LA to Randy Wilson’ Coon-Ass Redneck Nationals. Sharon and I have only missed 1 show in the last 10 years. May not of had the truck there, but we were. We spent the day with friends and had a good time and found out we have been missing out on a good place to eat. Hwy 190 going in Hammond from the east splits into a one-way street separated by about a block. We always left going out of town on 190 going east and missed the restaurant called Lee’s by the 1 block. Lee’s is in an old drive-in restaurant, it still had the canopy where you parked and ordered you food from. The speakers are gone and no more car hops, but you can walk up to the outside window and order you food and go back and set in your car if you want to. The inside was enlarged a little to hold more people. It still has the counter with stools, booths and tables. There are poster on the walls from the 50’s and 60’s to look at. The inside has that 50’s and 60’s look inside. The food was great. I tried a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo, it had just enough pepper to give you a little bite, but not to the point of burning. Next time I think I will settle for bowl with good French bread. Some of us had seafood, liver and onions, spaghetti, Po-boys and old time cheese burgers. Everybody said their food was great. We had to wait a few minute because the place was kind of full and we had 9 of us, but it didn’t take long to get seated. The prices where lower than what we would pay here for the same thing. Now if you want desserts. They make a mean banana split and a brownie with ice cream on it. These things are big. The also still have the old style milk shake where they bring the extra out in the metal cup where they made it. So if you are in Hammond go by and try Lee’s , ask and local folks will tell you how to get there. If you are going west on Hwy 190 into Hammond you will go by Lee’s. Start looking for it after you cross the railroad tracks. Till we eat again J. R. "When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, "Jesus, could you get that for me?" A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing..... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

knows how create clothes to flatter women’s bodies of every shape and size. Growing up I loved watching old musicals and black and white films. I always loved Marilyn Monroe and Shirley Temple, and films like Flower Drum Song. However, my all-time favorite was and still is the movie Grease. While other kids were watching cartoons, I was watching John Travolta and Olivia Newton John sing and dance on my VHS tape. As I got older, I had outfits for each musical number. I would change my outfit for the next song and do the dance and motions for each part of the movie, from start to finish. You could say I had a bit of a Grease obsession! It is what began my love of rockabilly before it was the lifestyle so many of us enjoy today. “I’m so happy there’s a huge rockabilly community that loves pin-ups, antique cars, classic rock n’ roll and vintage the way I do.” My passion was increased by my older brother’s love of hot rods. Custom building and selling vintage beauties in Utah, it was because of him I first attended Viva Las Vegas and fell in love. It was as if Grease came to life. I was instantly hooked. Last year I had a rockin’ time and I look forward to attending Reno Rockabilly Riot again this year.

As an entertainer, pin-up model, classic car enthusiast and a fan of everything rockabilly, I’ve been fortunate to be a part of some stellar events. One of my favorites is Reno Rockabilly Riot. A newer event on the retro scene, Reno Rockabilly Riot is Northern Nevada’s premier event for rockabilly aficionados. The 2013 Reno Rockabilly Riot featured a tattoo convention, fastest mechanic contest, drag races, a pin-up competition, bands, vendors and a new favorite, outhouse and toilet seat racing. The outhouses are built on bicycles and look just like the real thing. Each one has a unique construction and theme, from the purple boa covered flapper crapper to the old jail with barred windows to the popular ‘trailer trash’ version. Another highlight was The Best in the West Burlesque Showcase, featuring aerial acts and renowned performers ChaCha Velour, Reagan Riot, The Shanghai Pearl and many more shimmying starlets. The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino hosted the event where all ages are welcome, even your 4 legged family members. No rockabilly event would be complete without a car show! Rockabilly Riot features pre-1968 home-built hot rods and rat rods, customs, race cars, traditional and VW’s. Some imports are allowed with approval. Awards and prizes will be given for the 130 foot drags contest, a burnout competition, fastest mechanic in the west contest, loud pipes competition and a people’s choice award for the best rod. The races will feature not just custom cars, but stock and outlaw as well. Last year I attended the event as a spokesmodel for Atomic Ave Clothing Company. Designer and seamstress Reagan Riot features custom creations and limited edition lines of clothing and accessories, with catchy names like Pretty-in-Punk. Atomic Ave Clothing Company’s beautiful handmade creations range from the Victorian era to the atomic age and beyond. With designs for maternity and pint-sized pinups to boudoir attire, corsets and cinchers, anything can be customized. The lines feature retro swimsuits, dresses, aprons, skirts and tops made by a woman that

1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe un-restored w/2,996 miles Sent in by GptTeeByrd@ The fall of 1966, 30-year-old Don McNamara of Colorado Springs (CO) celebrated his retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps w/a trip to Las Vegas (NV). It was the one & only time he would visit Sin City, & it proved fortuitous when Lady Luck intervened & a slot machine Don was playing paid out the massive sum of $5,000. By the time he returned to his parents' home where he lived, he knew what he would do w/his winnings. He asked his father, a car salesman, to take the money & buy a new Corvette. At 1st glance, Don's dream car appeared to be just out of reach; the features he specified pushed the price tag more than $500 past the $5,000 mark, but his father's persistence paid off when he found a dealership in Lamar (CO), about 125 miles away, that agreed to sell a 427 coupe for under $5,000. Built on 5/10/1967, & delivered to McNamara on May 20th by Ray Motor Co. in Lamar, the Corvette coupe was exactly as Don had ordered, w/the L36 427/390 HP engine, M20 4-spd M/T & 3.36 Posi-Traction rear end; tinted glass, telescopic steering wheel, AM/FM radio, side exhaust & bolt-on aluminum wheels. Don's innate patriotism influenced his choice of colors: Ermine White paint, Red Stinger stripe & Red interior - a matchup he completed by replacing the factory Black wall rubber w/a set of double White-&-Blue stripe tires. Don drove his new Corvette only sparingly for the 1st several months, until it inexplicably disappeared. When asked of its whereabouts, he would always answer that he no longer owned it. And yet, rumors that it was parked in his heated single-car garage persisted for years afterward, even after Don McNamara passed away in July of 2011. Only then was the truth revealed: the Corvette had been there the entire time, a full 45 years, discovered by the neighboring couple McNamara had befriended in his later years & to whom he had willed his entire estate. Recorded interviews w/the couple uncovered the story not only of the Corvette but of its enigmatic owner as well. Don McNamara was a unique man, one who loved his country & surrounded himself w/its symbols of freedom & individuality while maintaining an intensely private life. He never married or had a family, never had a checking account or a credit card & always presented himself as barely getting by. He had decided to put the Corvette under wraps when after the 1st year the time came to pay license & insurance renewal fees, & began driving it only late at night, away from prying eyes & ever faithful to the pursuit of

14

happiness. When the Corvette's odometer approached the 3,000-mile mark in the mid-'80s, he retired it from the road for the rest of his life. When the Corvette was removed from the garage in 2012, the late McNamara's next-door neighbor of 22 years saw it for the very 1st time. It had been discovered wrapped in a car cover, over which was draped a shipping blanket decorated w/large Stars & Stripes & Marine Corps flags. It was in a virtually flawless state of preservation, entirely original except for a few personal touches under the hood comprising polished Edelbrock aluminum valve covers & 4 Corvette emblems mounted on the air cleaner. McNamara's Team USA Olympic jacket was draped over the back of the passenger seat, another reminder of his love of country. The Don McNamara Corvette coupe was purchased from the executors of the estate in 2012 by Dr. Mark Davis, who arranged for it to be unveiled & displayed in the entrance to the Bloomington Gold Great Hall in June of that year. At that time, as now, its odometer showed 2,996 miles. Until its unveiling there, it had been seen by only 12 people. It had only ever been driven by Don McNamara. Only 2 other people were ever known to have sat in the driver's seat, & no one had ever occupied the passenger seat. It had never seen the rain or been washed w/ water & since its discovery had never been cleaned, sat in or touched. The car instantly caused a sensation in the Corvette community. Numerous high profile Corvette experts including John Rettick have thoroughly documented the car w/over 4,000 detail photographs, which along w/the car itself serve as in-depth educational resources for Corvette restorers. The Don McNamara Corvette is not only quite likely one of the most well-preserved, lowestmileage & exceptionally original 1967 Corvettes in existence, it is also accompanied by exquisitely unspoiled documentation. The paperwork was kept by McNamara in a bank safe deposit box & remains in crisp as-new condition. It includes the original window sticker, showroom sales brochure, Chevrolet warranty book w/Protect-O-Plate, the original keys & fob & a duplicate set of keys; the original owner's manual & plastic pouch, dealer record book issued by Ray Motor Co., a cashier's check for a deposit & a receipt for the balance of the purchase price, the original State of Colorado license registration & title issued to McNamara dated 5/22/1967 & the NCRS Shipping Data Report confirming delivery at Ray Motor Company in Lamar (CO). Also included are McNamara's last driver's license, a photograph of the car he always carried w/him in his wallet & video & photos documenting the car's

The year is 1958. We were barreling down the road at 4:50 A.M. in a 1957 Chevrolet Nomad wagon. The paint was India Ivory over Canyon Coral. Under the hood was a 283 with Power Pack heads, solid lifters, “97” camshaft, and two four barrel carburetors. That thing was really hauling the mail with 270 horses! We were heading to Nanty Glo for a family reunion. I would have preferred another family but this is what I had. My parents always packed a thermos of hot coffee, a red plaid picnic basket, and a red plaid wool blanket. They also put in a coffee can for me in case I had to relieve myself along the way. We always left at 4:30 in the morning. I don’t know why! I was in the rear of the station wagon. Those sliding windows on that car always fascinated me. I thought they were so cool. That car looked cool and felt cool. It oozed cool. The headlights were stark against the blackness of the sky and road. The air was cool and crisp. The speed was fast. When we would come upon another car and passed, a thrill came over me as those four‐barrel carbs kicked in and I felt the power. I guess it is that power of the engine that had me hooked back then. I still have the same feelings. I have a need for speed. As we rounded curves and climbed hills, that engine sang a sweet song to me. It didn’t need a radio. It’s a good thing, because I couldn’t hear it over the exhaust noise in the back of the wagon. My love of cars began several years earlier, but I never outgrew it…rather it became stronger as time went by. The cars themselves create the passion we have but maybe more so it comes from other individuals we encounter. I can think of so many people that had a passion for the automobile and the power it brings. These people give acceptance if you are a car nut. How do we get to be so crazy over cars? It isn’t something genetic in males because I know females with the same passion. Lots of experts have studied it and

come up with their theories. That is not important. What is important is that we continue to instill the love of motoring in our youth. I was around several young people at a car show this weekend. They were just as excited about their rides as my friends and the rest of us old dudes were. The “Take a Kid to a Car Show” (takeakidtoacarshow.com) gives great ideas on how to encourage young people to love this hobby as much as we do. Life is full of choices for kids. By showing your passion for “cool old cars” you may help them make positive ones. Build your reputation by helping other people build theirs. I think I got some of my passion from Uncle Ezra. Here is a picture of the first car I remember him driving. I called it a street log!

Did I tell you I found out that during the Civil War he fought for the WEST? I traced our family tree and discovered that he was the sap! That’s the “Hole” truth and nothing but. Gotta Cruise Cubby P.S. The “Cruisin’ for a Cure 2014” Plainfield, IN car show we sponsored had 134 cars and their drivers in attendance. Hundreds of spectators came. The donation to the American Cancer Society amounted to $3700. A big thank you to everyone involved. I also presented six of the new “Cubby” awards to deserving recipients.

Solid Colors Solid colors are colors that do not contain a sparkling flake or pearl. Colors like solid black, white, are all examples of this class of colors. Solid colors are available in both basecoat form and single stage (no clear coat required) form with many custom colors and classic car colors currently available. In most cases solid colors are less expensive than their comparable pearl and metallic colors and they are generally easier to apply than other color categories.

Candy Colors Candy colors is a system consisting of a metallic base layer, a transparent colored layer (the candy), and a protective clearcoat layer. The metallic layer gives the film a sparkling appearance while the transparent color layer gives the sparkle a deep colored look often very unique from conventional automotive colors. Candy colors are a more advanced application process and should only be undertaken by experienced custom painters or painters that are patient enough to learn the proper process to get a nice even look. The downside of candy paints is they typically do not last as long as conventional pearl, metallic or solid colors and the cost is higher.

Chameleon Paint Colors Chameleon colors are color changing paints that reflect a different color at different viewing angles. Like candy paints, chameleon paints are a 3 stage consisting of a basecoat, a chameleon pearl midcoat, and clearcoat. A unique pearl pigment allows a car to look completely different as it approaches than it does as it passes in many cases. This type color can be tricky to apply as well and should be reserved for the advanced painter. Chameleon paints are among the most expensive of automotive paints due to the unique pearl pigments required to achieve the effect.

Low Gloss Hot Rod Colors

Introduction Choosing a color for your car or bike can be both an exciting and daunting task. With more than 50,000 car colors commercially available, the options can be overwhelming. Adding to the confusion for many are the various types of paint colors and what each type represents. In this month's article we'll give an overview of the types of color available and some pros and cons of each type in hopes to help clear up some of the confusion over color types.

Metallic Colors Metallic automotive paint colors are those that contain a finely ground metallic flake, usually aluminum. This metallic flake provides a sparkle under the sun and lights. Metallic pigments can be used alone to create brilliant silver metallic or mixed with transparent organic and inorganic pigments to create colored finishes with metallic sparkle. By varying the size of the metallic pigment and color of the pigment thousands of color options can be created. Metallic finishes are generally durable and long lasting. From an application standpoint care has to be taken by the painter to apply metallic colors evenly to avoid striping and mottling which shows as streaks and light or dark spots. Metallic colors should not be mistaken with “metal flake” which is a special type of glitter like pigments that can be added to automotive paints to add a larger sparkle.

Low gloss or “hot rod” colors are low sheen automotive finishes which have been on the rise in recent times. These colors offer a unique look since most cars are glossy. Low gloss colors can vary both in gloss and color. Low gloss effects can be achieved with special low gloss clears applied over basecoat color or a single stage color that has special matting agents incorporated into the color. Black is by far the most popular but other colors are available as well. The downside of low gloss colors is they can be more difficult to maintain than gloss finishes and imperfections in the painting process require repainting the affected area since low gloss finishes can not be polished without changing the gloss.

Fluorescent Colors Fluorescent colors are unique colors that provide a high level of chroma and brightness not attainable with other color types. The downside of this color type is that they do not last outdoors very long. For vehicles stored outside it is not uncommon for them to see substantial fading in 6 months. However, for regular repaints and short term use these colors can add real pop to a project. The largest application for fluorescent finishes in the automotive field is for race cars.

Pearl Colors Pearl automotive paints are those which contain a pearl pigment that gives the paint a shimmer under light. Unlike typical metallics, pearl pigments can have a colored shimmer which adds to possibilities for uniqueness and style. Because of the colored shimmer the pearl pigments, pearl paints are often more unique and chromatic. There are thousands of pearl color options available some of which require a three step process to apply (tristage) and some which require a two step or “two stage” process to complete in a basecoat clear coat system. Pearl colors are generally durable and require the same attention to detail for painters that metallic finishes require.

Story & Photos by: Denise “Neecy” Cobb February 1-2, 2014 - Lafayette, Louisiana Several years ago, Ronnie “Speedy” Boudin was going through an unpleasant divorce so he and his brother decided to throw a party to cheer him up. When they called their friends to invite them to the party, they realized that most of them had custom rides, so why not have a car show instead of a party? As Speedy and his brother were planning the show, his brother said, “it’s time to get back to basics.” When Speedy heard him say that, he knew that is what he was going to name the show, “Back 2 Basics!” This year marks the third car show that Speedy and his staff hosts. Every year a charity of some sort is chosen and this year the proceeds of the show benefited Wild Spirit Ministries. Wild Spirit Ministries is a non-profit organization that sponsors thirty or more displaced children, and teaches them about religion, hunting, fishing and showing them how to be responsible in their lives. Held at Cajun Field this year, Back 2 Basics Numero Three, was a major success. They saw over 1,600 spectators and 356 entries this year. The entries were up from 289 the previous year! The numbers were very impressive considering the event was planned to be a two day show, and sunday was a complete wash out! Due to the rainy weather, only the awards ceremony was held on sunday. Amazing storage sponsored all of the “Best Of” awards, and the B2B staff designed ten Wild Spirit Ministries awards pin-striped by the ever popular Kuzn Jack. The Wild Spirit Awards were hand picked by ten children currently in the program, and boy did they have fun with that! When I asked Speedy what he thought was different about this year’s show compared to all of the others he said, “I must say, this car show is becoming more and more about what me and my staff were wanting to achieve. A family oriented show for all to enjoy, and to help a good cause all at the same time!” Next year’s Back 2 Basics show, numero 4 will be held on January 31st through February 1st. If anyone needs sponsor information or has any other questions, please contact Speedy at speedelowz@gmail.com and/or call 337-781-1958. Looks like Gulfport area is Our (Larry & I) very good friend “Lee Roy” has a great really going to be busy this ad for his hotrod shop called “Wet Willys”, you can summer! I had just left “Nates” on find his (1/2 page ad) in the ad section of Gulf Coast Hi Way 49 North. Its right after MotorSports. He has been our pal for 20 years and was Dedeaux Road, just north of the a great customer of my bar in Gretna. There is a giant pool room in back any money for those surfing with about out 6 tables and during the day the juke box lessons, but they’d spend their own is right by the bar, and the speaker system is really money on leis, putting so many excellent! It sets in behind a small car lot, but you can see it from hwy 49. I like it, because the “good” bartenders are Cindy and Tina. Cindy usually does days, and Tina nights, but sometimes they switch on Sundays, but both are excellent bartenders! (not like the ones who come from “bartender school” and know how to make every drink in the book, but not how take care of a customer!) Larry likes the “Bloody Mary” special, $1.50 till noon on week days and $1.00 till noon on Sat. I like the 2 for 1 well 5 to 6 p.m., and I think its 7 days. The Juke box has Delbert McClinton (#48) and Conway Twitty (#28) last but not least good old “Elvis” (#81). Lots of country and a pool contest every afternoon. Larry was having alternator problems with his Lincoln and left it running outside the Workman, one of the customers had a mini charger so Tina said “plug it in” and here is an extension cord! Now that’s what I call a neighborhood bar! I came on down hwy 49 to hwy 90 west, and as I crossed the bridge I took a sharp left on Beach Blvd. You can’t believe the great improvements that are being done for the new Bay St. Louis “Marina”. The “Blind Tiger” bar and café are “jammed” every time I go by that they are open. Also it looks like they are adding a 2nd story which will be another great view, due to them being located on the beach! (reminds me of Hawaii) “ DUKES CANOE CLUB”

ome are in wheel chairs, most are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. I’m watching NASCAR the other Sunday and “finally” it was over. Restrictor plate racing sure does have a lot of “following the leader” like a parade down main street. I wonder what would happen if they tried it on dirt track? Sure would need a lot of cover lenses for the windshield! In the old days the kidding was “dirt is for growing potatoes” and the answer was “asphalt is for parking cars”. Back in 1952 we ran Orange Show stadium in the town of San Bernardino, CA. I have mentioned before, the concession gal’s name was Lois, and we had gone out once before about 6 months prior to this date. She came over to me, and said “I broke up with my boyfriend, and I don’t want to go home tonite, are you open? “Sure” I replied “lets get a motel here and I’ll take you home in the morning”. She was a Darlin’ Child, and had a great sense of humor. When we got to the motel after the race, (I got a 3rd that nite) I showered first and was laying on the bed when she came out of the bathroom, topless! She looked at me smiling and said “you never saw my freckles before”, (it was always in the car and very dark). The next morning, I drove up in front of her apart‐ ment and parked, walked around the car to open her door, when she gasped and said “that’s him coming down the street running”. I reached down in my right hand pocket and closed my fist on the roll of dimes I always used to carry. He was walking fast, with his right fist closed, and this gave me the clue he was right hand crazy. He threw the right, I bent down and let it fly over my shoulder, and gave him a right to the stomach with every bit of power I had. His coming in made it real bad for him on top of my punch. He laid on the pavement groaning and holding his belly. I took Lois by the hand and walked her to her door. She looked at me and said “sorry” but I just smiled and said “no problem” see you next Friday nite ok? I jumped into my car and headed over to Long Beach (CA) at the time I was temporary at Clay Smiths shop while he was rebuilding both engines for Joe Lucy, I was to learn whatever he told me on how and why V‐8‐60s ran fast and good! Joe had talked to Clay, and I was to maintain the engines on the circuit until next year. Clay had a great sense of humor, and Aggies 98 was in one shop and the #2 car was in the other. See Photo.

Walt Faulkner was Aggies driver and he and Clay were real good friends. I’m in the shop one day and Clay picks up the phone and calls Walts wife “Betty he says can Walt come out and play tonite?” I don’t know what her answer was, but that was his kind of humor. I was there for about 6 weeks also at that time it was “Smith and Jones”. Dan Jones being in front of‐ fice, he was also father of Termite Jones who now works for Ford Motor Co., according to Don Edmunds the last time I TALKED TO “Rotten Red”. (about 2 years) Lois never saw the boyfriend again, but I was around every Friday nite when we ran “Bandoo”. “DON’T LET YEASTERDAY USE UP TOO MUCH OF TODAY” KEEP IT BETWEEN THE FENCES Larry Dunham 228‐671‐6216 Email usaclarry@gmail.com

Sometimes work that you enjoy so well can take a turn when circumstances change and you’re faced with a decision to make. Take the new circumstances or leave. I made the decision to leave the TV station after three years and go a different route. You know they say when you close one door another door opens… which is true. The thing they leave out is the insecurity you have while you’re waiting in the hallway! I had faith in God that everything would work out which it did. I ended up with an even better deal going to work for Super Talk MS. Super Talk MS is a network of 11 radio stations that cover the state of Mississippi with News, Talk and Sports. In South MS you can hear Super Talk MS on 103.1 FM. While I was standing in the hallway, I had a great car show to go do, which was great because I needed a good distraction. Burning up the Beaches Car Show was designed in conjunction with the Fort Walton Beach Florida Chamber of Commerce as a fundraiser for Horizons of Okaloosa County, a local ARC agency. The group benefits mentally and physically handicapped children, which is an awesome cause. Donna Tashik is the point person for the group and no one works harder to make a car show fabulous! I do mean fabulous! The bright idea entered my head to take the scenic route with the Hot Rod Show trailer heading down to the show, which would have been fine except it was Friday afternoon. Coming the back way thru Pensacola during Friday afternoon rush hour traffic was not a good decision on my part. Can you say stuck in traffic!!! Friday night was the Dueling Grand Piano Show with a good meal included, free with your car registration, good for two people. We were late because of the traffic, what would Homer Simpson say… Duhhhh! Saturday the Car Show was awesome with about 200 cars and the 50/50 was $2,000. Saturday night a good band played with more good food, once again included with your registration, good for two people plus there was a drawdown for cash! The people we got to see and spend time with again just made the already incredible car show, just over the top! The quality of cars, the people, the food and the fun is always good at Burning Up The Beaches Car Show, if you have missed this show, you need to put it on your to do list. It always ranks right up there with my most fun car shows to go to. Next month it’s off to the Vidalia, LA/Natchez, MS area for Cruising On The River Car Show. Get the Hot Rod on the road and enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind, nothing clears the mind like a good ole road trip! Til next month…

The Ambassador of Cultural Affairs, Randy Wilson and his team made sure everyone got registered, got their goodie bags. There was a good selection of vendors, and lots of people having a really great time. The Tangipahoa Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau is one of the sponsors and this car show is one of those shows that each year just seems to get bigger and better each year. To book DD Thunders Band : ddthunders100@yahoo.com ----Summer is really here now. I've been doing all the things I usually do to prepare for our summer season here on the Gulf Coast. Get some more surfing in before the summer flat season, Get my Netflix account back on line and get HBO for the summer. You ask, why do I need Netflix and HBO when I see two or more movies a week at the theater? Because it's the dark days of summer blockbusters, comic book heroes and retread comedy releases. I'm sure by now you know how much I dislike the common summer movie fare they shove down our throats during the dog days. So I decided to give my top 5 summer movies I've been watching this year to get prepared for "Summer movie Armageddon" ----Let's start with number 5 and work our way down to my favorite, number one, all-time summer movie. Coming in at number five is the all-time cheesy classic beach movie, 1965's Beach Blanket Bingo. It stars summers eternal teen couple Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. They were the power couple that made this type of lightweight flick popular in the early mid 60s. This black-andwhite summer film has everything you need, girls in bikinis, wild dance parties, beach parties, surfboards, Surf music. There are a couple of cameos from Don Rickles and Paul Lynn, who were upand-coming comedians at the time. I won't bore you with details about the script, storyline but it's a classic tale of good versus bad. And the bad guy in this film is my favorite all-time classic bad guy, Eric Von Zipper. This leather jacketed wearing ( think the wild ones with Brando and co.) gang leading criminal mastermind is so overthe-top camp and funny, he should have been on a variety show and maybe his own TV series. Just watch him give everyone the "finger" and you know what I'm talking about! Do yourself a favor, Find this fun summer flick on TCM and let's go surfing! ---- Coming in at number 4 is a fairly new summer film on my list titled Warm Bodies. I'm not a big zombie fad fan, We've been saturated by movies, TV shows, you name it. But this light hearted, zombie romp, written and directed by Jonathan Levine is on my summer rotation list. It's rated PG-13 and stars Nicholas Holt, Teresa Palmer and John Malkovich. The story has the usual zombie apocalypse end of days story tale but with a really interesting twist. Nicholas Holt, who you might remember as the kid from it's about a boy Plays an infected human that doesn't quite go zombie and hangs in limbo. He has memories of his human life and doesn't quite like where he's heading. Je is disgusted by his new flesh eating diet. While fighting the fever he falls in love with the beautiful Teresa Palmer, who plays the daughter of the human resistance faction led by John Malkovich. It's a well written love story with a great soundtrack. Into sensitivity that I think will keep this zombie fest a timeless classic ----Number 3 is my all-time favorite baseball movie, Bull Durham. I'm a big baseball fan and played little league up to high school and even a bit of semi pro ball in my 30s. So I get spring-training fever like any good baseball fan and this movie has it all. Comedy, baseball groupies, guys and girls falling in lust/ love, this well acted film shows a true love for America's pastime and what it's like to play in the little big leagues on a minor-league professional baseball team. Stars Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins do a perfect job of moving a storyline along that could have been just a throwaway. The need to tell what the movie is about since we've all seen it more than once. Even if you're not a baseball fan you can find something like about this movie. It's a chick flick, sports film, love story and an American summer classic. ----I will probably get some flack for my number 2 pick so bring it on! My second favorite summer movie this year is Jaws 2. Sure it's

28 28

a sequel that doesn't, even halfway, add up to the original. Steven Spielberg didn't direct it. It's a total retread of the first story. But I love it. Partly because half of the movie was filmed at my favorite surfing beach back in the day, Pensacola Fl. I went to college in that area and have the lowest GPA average in the schools history to prove it ! Beautiful beaches, beautiful water, The perfect background for a intense horror/ thriller centered around a vindictive, great white shark with an appetite for destruction. The thin script follows stars Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gray and Murray Hamilton in the round 2 heavyweight battle, Shark versus man. Guess who wins! What I like most about this film is its a freeze frame for a late 70s wholesome lifestyle that's gone but not forgotten. I guess there is a bit of nostalgia for me and this shark film franchise but it's an intense thriller that will still keep you out of the water and your finger on your dial up phone, calling the police station, hoping captain Brody will save the day again. ----Here we go, my number 1 all-time favorite summer movie...Jaws. That's right, the first jaws release. Written by Peter Benchley and directed by Steven Spielberg it's a classic for the ages that holds up and looks better year after year. Stars Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gray, AnneMarie Hamilton, were probably just cashing a paycheck, hoping to finish this movie before the studio pulled the plug on this first time rookie director. Little did anyone know that they would be stuck in a timeless tale on the big screen that still scares any potential water lover, swimmer, surfer, diver, fisherman and boat lover. When this was released in 1975, I was surfing all the time, and let's just say we all got nervous, watched our toes and fingers and kept our eyes on the horizon, just in case. I'm sure all of us can remembers how this story goes. Boy meets girl, shark eats them. But the more I watch this classic, the more little things I noticed that make this story film evolve over the years. Stephen Spielberg did a great job with this epic tale of nature's evil and man's triumph over it. My favorite "little things" about this film are; a love hate relationship between Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw's characters, Chief Brody's family life and love of his wife, Murray Hamilton's portrayal of a blowhard mayor who is all about his political career and the almighty dollar, but mostly about the antihero of this classic, the shark. A perfect killing machine who does their job seamlessly, without remorse and with a relentless drive that makes other celluloid bad guys pale in comparison. ----I hope you've enjoyed my list and maybe revisit some of these summer classics. Don't worry I'm still at the matinee. I'm the guy in the last row, booing, throwing my popcorn at the screen while watching Superman 12 or the Iron man 14! ----Keep those emails coming bad or good to ddthunders100@yahoo.com and I will see you at the matinee.

History of the Houston Art Car Parade "Houston artist Jackie Harris transformed the car into a mobile work of art with a budget of $800 for paint and plastic fruit." In 1984, Kit and Carl Detering donated a 1967 Ford station wagon to The Orange Show Foundation to be auctioned at our annual Gala benefit. Houston artist Jackie Harris transformed the car into a mobile work of art with a budget of $800 for paint and plastic fruit. The "Fruitmobile" was donated back to the foundation by the group of six who purchased it. Also in 1984, Ann Harithas curated an exhibition called "Collision" at Lawndale Art Center that featured two art cars. All this activity resulted in a number of art cars seen on Houston streets. In 1986, Rachel Hecker and Trish Herrera organized a New Music Parade in conjunction with the New Music America Festival. Some 20 artist floats and art cars paraded down Montrose Boulevard, ending at the dedication of the MFAH sculpture garden. A few months later, Susanne Demchak organized a "Road Show" at The Orange Show on June 29, 1986, 11 art cars were exhibited alongside the Fruitmobile at The Orange Show, with Lowrider demonstrations, and children's art bike workshops. 1,400 Houstonians came, along with WFAA-TV and National Public Radio. Roadside Attractions: The Art Car Parade was born in April, 1988 with a 40 car parade seen by an estimated 2,000. In 1987, the Houston International Festival, the City's official celebration of the arts, asked the Orange Show to organize a parade to build on the success of the New Music Parade. The Orange Show agreed to produce an event dedicated to art cars. Roadside Attractions: The Art Car Parade was born in April, 1988 with a 40 car parade seen by an estimated 2,000. By the following year, the parade size doubled and the crowd swelled to tens of thousands. Another important milestone came in 1989, when Harrod Blank came from California with his art car, "Oh My God." On a quest to document America's art cars that eventually led to his two books and two films on art cars, Harrod told artists all over the nation about the Houston Art Car Parade, and soon we began to see caravans of art cars travel thousands of miles to be in the parade. Another major milestone was the entry of Rebecca Bass and Edison Middle School in 1990. "The Body Shop" went on to win major awards, and started educators across the city to see art car projects as tools to teach life skills and engage students with their schools and community. The Art Car Parade Today Today, the Art Car Parade is the highlight of a three-day celebration of the drive to create, Art Car Weekend. The parade attracts 250+ vehicles and other entries from 23 states along with Canada and Mexico A live audience of some 250,000+ spectators, Parade entries include anything on wheels from unicycles to lawnmowers to cars and go-carts Entries are as likely to be made by members of the general public as by recognized artists Community groups, public and private schools, and professional organizations have become regular participants. Inspired by what they see, spectators create art cars of their own and often become future participants. And as the parade grows, attracting more and more participants, the complexity and quality of the entries increases.

Attending this event provides not only a great ride, but also the opportunity to renew old friendships, make new ones, and share the unique experiences of the area. Host Hotel: Clarion Inn & Suites and Conference Center, 1051 U.S. 165, Monroe, LA 71203 Phone (318) 3875100 Event URL www.womenonwheels.org/htmlitems/ridein.html Email ridein@womenonwheels.org July 26 Farmerville LA 8th Annual Louisiana Melon Run - Saturday, 8:00 AM the Louisiana Melon Run is an event just for motorcyclists that is very similar to a traditional Poker Run, with the exception that the winning “hand” is the total points added together from collected cards, numbered from 1 to 250. The Melon Run was first introduced in conjunction with the Louisiana Watermelon Festival in Farmerville, Louisiana, thus the name. The Louisiana Melon Run, Inc. is a non-profit organization, run by Adam Chellette and Heather Graham Chellette, which benefits Breast Cancer Awareness. The decision to use this particular charity came after Melon Run Founder, Heather Graham Chellette’s mother, Martie Graham, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2008. The proceeds are used to provide grants to Union Parish breast cancer victims in need of financial assistance. This is a great foundation for a wonderful cause, and by participating, you will be part of the cure. Not only will the Melon Run give you a chance to win some cash, but it's also a good excuse to just ride your motorcycle. If you're not from the area, you will probably also have a chance to ride down a few roads you’ve never been on and enjoy some new scenery along the way. Adventure, fun and a chance to ride with old friends and make new ones are all part of the Melon Run experience, and we would like YOU to be a part of it! It doesn't matter what type of bike you have, from cruisers to vintage iron, sportbikes to Gold Wing tourers. If you haven’t participated yet, come join a fast growing event for a good cause! The route for the Melon Run each year is a little different and is normally approximately 100 miles long. At each stop, participants will draw a numbered card that will be recorded on their scorecard. Once all numbers have been drawn, participants will return their scorecard to the registration tent. Numbers are tallied and cash 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes are then awarded, along with various doorprizes. Courthouse Annex Parking Address 303 E.
