Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo
As usual time has run out and it’s the deadline to get this magazine off to the printer. Putting this magazine together each month takes a lot of time…. the time I get to spend on each page reminds me of spending time with my grand-mom while she was at her home office desk.. she had a column in the local paper. Each day she would take a few hours, grab the old hand held phone and chat with people. As she would pound away on the antique Royal typewriter, I was busy with my box of broken Crayola’s, pencils, rulers and anything else I could find in her desk drawers, working on the paper too. Soon we would be off the newspaper building and we would hand in our sheets of paper…. the man behind the desk was happy to see us and he would always look at mine first… and say, “soon you’ll have a paper of your own.” Grandma would send me off while she and the man talked. It was amazing to me how the men could take the words from grandmas paper and it would be in the newspaper. That’s an early memory but one that helped me get to this point in my life.. being thankful each day. To some of us the cars and motorcycles we have or had are the memory builders of our time. The people you’ve met, places you’ve been, the wonderful feeling of freedom you got from driving… how can you not be thankful for those memories. I am thankful to my grand-mom for giving me direction, Jimbo, Hope you enjoyed your stay in Madison. Attached is a photo that I thought you and your wife might like to have. Thanks for all your support. Tom

Jimbo, I just wanted to let you and the readers know how very happy we are with the job Ken and his crew at KARS unlimited did on our Camero. Ken worked very close with us in ordering the replacement parts to ensure that we were happy with the results that he and myself were looking for. I am very satisfied with the paint results. They got the paint extremely close to what it was. The average person wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The guys were very professional and courteous every time we visited. They even went beyond what was expected and fixed some imperfections in the hood. In addition, he had several projects going in his shop and he was able to grant my request of having our car ready for Crusin the Coast. Jason & Suzette Graham Jimbo, Thought your readers might like to try something different this holiday season like Tipsy Sweet Potatoes.

These didn’t last long on our Thanksgiving table. Mary@ Hey want to have some fun?....here's some things you can do to liven up YOUR Thanksgiving Dinner: When everyone goes around to say what they are thankful for, say, "I'm thankful I didn't get caught!" and refuse to say anything more. Bring a date to dinner that only talks about the tragic and abusive conditions known to exist at turkey farms. During the dinner, turn to your mom and say, "See, mom? I told you they wouldn't notice the turkey was beyond the expiration date! You were worried about nothing!" This year I had my chance to shoot my own turkey. Man, you should have seen the people scatter in the meat department! My family's always been kind of dysfunctional about Thanksgiving. Instead of roast turkey, our main course has always been Wild Turkey. Did you hear about little Johnny? When asked what he was thankful for, he said, "I'm thankful I'm not a turkey."
Kwicksilver Wheel Repair is available in the same location for bent wheels, cosmetic wheel repairs, and cracked wheels. We also have the ability to send out wheels for chroming at a reasonable price.
I’m with you Johnny, and here is where I wish you Happy Thanksgiving. May your turkey day be one that gives you a happy memory of family. From where you came, the one you created, or the friends that have become your family. Giving thanks is the easy part.. Being thankful within takes respecting and honoring the people who helped you along the way…. It’s all about havin’ fun and for most of us it’s good friends, good music, good food, kool cars and Great Cruizin’. Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida offers some of the best cruising and shows the good ol’ U.S.A. has. And that’s why we are the Coast Cruizers. The Gulf Coast Auto Show is a reunion of all you Coast Cruizers and the readers who support this magazine. . the 1st weekend in April every year on the Mississippi Gulf Coast will be your time. Come enjoy the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we’d love to see ya! Till next month… Jimbo

I was driving to the doctor's office this morning. I didn't want to go. I wasn't in the best of moods. Turning on the cd player in my truck, I hear: “I'm gonna wake you early, 'Cause I'm gonna take a ride with you. We're going down to the Honda shop, I'll tell you what we're gonna do. Put on a ragged sweatshirt, I'll take you anywhere you want me to.” (some lyrics omitted) A big smile appeared. Wow! Remember that song “Little Honda” recorded by the Hondells and written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys? A Honda Scrambler immediately sprang to mind. Those were unique bikes at that time. Great memories came into my head about the introduction of underpowered 2 cycle machines that could take us all around town, anywhere we wanted. Such freedom! They were noisy ringey-tingey little machines, spewing out oily smoke. Nonetheless I wanted one with a passion. Chicks went crazy over them. Thinking about this, I nearly forgot where I was heading. That song ends and I hear: “Little G.T.O., you're really lookin' fine Three deuces and a four-speed and a 389 Listen to her tachin' up now, listen to her wi-ee-eye-ine. C'mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out G.T.O. Wa-wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa…(lyrics omitted) …Gonna save all my money (turnin' it on, blowin' it out) and buy a G.T.O. Get a helmet and a roll bar and I'll be ready to go Take it out to Pomona and let 'em know, yeah, yeah. That I'm the coolest thing around Little buddy, gonna shut you down When I turn it on, wind it up, blow it out G.T.O.” Ronny & the Daytonas really got that song right. I would have given almost anything to have a G.T.O. with a four speed to tool around in. Everyone really would have viewed me as cool! I would have thought I was cool. Girls probably would have just been dripping off of me in high school!!! As I headed down highway 267, out blasted: “Tach it up, tach it up Buddy gonna shut you down It happened on the strip where the road is wide Two cool shorts standin' side by side Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a 413 We're revvin' up our engines and it sounds real mean. Tach it up, tach it up Buddy gonna shut you down. Declinin' numbers at an even rate At the count of one we both accelerate My Stingray's light the slicks are startin' to spin But the 413' really diggin' in…(lyrics omitted) …Pedal's to the floor hear the dual quads drink And now the 413's lead is startin' to shrink He's hot with ram induction but it's understood I got a fuel injected engine sittin' under my hood.” I want to tell you, I was into this music. “Shut Down” by the Beach Boys really had me stirred up! I never had a Stingray, not even the bicycle, but I was riding one in my head. (the car not the bicycle.) All of my stress had somehow melted away. I forgot all about how anxious I was about going to the doctor when I left home. “Drag City” by Jan and Dean came on with the revving engines and then the launch of two cars blasting off at the beginning of the song. I could almost smell the burning rubber and raw gasoline. That's an aroma that a young man never forgets nor I think gets tired of. My thoughts envisioned a '41 Willys straight-axled, blown Hemi powered, wheelstanding, ground-pounding dragster, even though the song was about different cars. Next was “Hot Rod Lincoln” sung by Commander Cody with “My daddy said son you're gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln.” I was cooked! Thoughts stuffed my brain about all the cars that were so cool when we were young and what I would have done with them if I had the opportunity to drive them. The doctor visit was a breeze. I barely felt the two gallons of blood they took from me! The songs of the 50's and 60's really speak to me. I listen to the music and think back to some really fun times in my past. I hope that the young people of today have the same kind of wonderful memories of their childhood. Robert Brault says: “In childhood, we press our nose to the pane, looking out. In memories of childhood, we press our nose to the pane, looking in.”

The new and exciting location debuted last year in Pearl, Ms., just across the river on the east side of Jackson and has been selected again for the site of the premier, oldest street rod event in Mississippi. The City of Pearl has enthusiastically welcomed MSRA and Dixie Run last year. They put their efforts into establishing a new home for Dixie Run which should carry it well into the future. As a result, MSRA and Pearl's city officials have joined with the new Holiday Inn Hotel and Trustmark Park, home of the Mississippi Braves baseball club, to again host the 2013 street rod spectacular. Last year, 163 Street Rods from eight states attended, and they all said they'd be back and bring someone with them. Area attractions include the Bass Pro Shop next door and a huge Sam's Club store just down the street. Restaurants of every description are within two blocks of the hotel. There is a very nice restaurant in the hotel lobby which will be serving a breakfast buffet every day, but if you choose to drive, you will find Ryan's, Logan's Roadhouse, Cracker Barrel, O'Charley's, Los Parillos, El Charro, Shoney's, Waffle House, plus all the fast food regulars, within blocks of the hotel. A huge new outlet mall has begun construction next door to the Holiday Inn. When completed, this new mall will have over 100 outlet stores, most of which will be unique name brand stores not previously available in central Mississippi. Some may possibly be open by Dixie Run time in March, but this new mall will definitely be an exciting place to shop in future years while attending Dixie Run. Dixie Run kicks off Friday, March 21 with registration at the Holiday Inn beginning at 2 p.m. Then at 6 p.m. across the street at Trustmark Park Stadium, there will be a BBQ supper for early arriving entrants. The best BBQ beef, chicken and sausage you ever ate will be cooked up on our grille on site. MSRA club members will be serving you a full barbeque meal with beans, chips, desserts and drinks. Bring your lawn chair or sit in the spacious stadium. On Saturday, March 22, registration continues at 8 a.m. Across the street games will begin in the stadium paring lot. With the added space the stadium parking lot provides, we will be able to have some driving games, similar to the ones we used to have " back in the day" at the old Holiday Inn location in Jackson, MS.
MISSISSIPPI STREET ROD ASSOCIATION Fellow Street Rodders: The Mississippi Street Rod Association is proud to announce that the 36th annual edition of Dixie Run will be held March 21-23, 2014. Dixie Run 36 is a pre'49, street rod only event. Once again, the Mississippi Street Rod Association is bucking the trend and keeping it "Old School". We're street rodders, and are keeping the Dixie Run tradition alive as a pre -'49 street rod only event for our fellow street rodders. Car Shows are nice, and there are plenty of good ones around, but you can't beat an old fashioned pre-'49 three day ROD RUN !! On Saturday 22 we will be auctioning off a 1932 Ford Roadster donated by Jack Brown. All proceeds will be donated to Hederman Cancel Center at Baptist Medical Center. www.CoastCruizers.com

Info & photos from: www.web-cars.com/corvette The 1950s was an exciting and innovative decade for the American automobile industry. The country had just come out of World War II and demand for cars, which had taken a leave of absence during the war years, was exploding. Something different began to appear on American roads: sports cars. GIs that served in Europe discovered a real affection for MGs and many other small two seaters and brought them home with them. All sorts of sports car events, from rallies to hard core races, showed a sudden burst of popularity. The lead instigator in the birth of the Corvette was Harley Earl, the head of GM's Art and Color studio. He was a sports car aficionado, and an admirer of the Jaguar XK-120.
Harley Earl (left) was the head of GM design from 1927 to 1958 and inspired the two seat American sports car we know as the Corvette. He was a big fan of the Jaguar XK-120 (right). Note the basic design of the Jaguar: huge long hood, minimal two seat passenger area and a short rear deck. This same philosophy would be the basis for the Corvette for more than 50 years.
you keep the panel as it was delivered from the factory or should it be smoothed out? Fiberglass played another roll in the Corvette story. Certain shapes and styling themes can favor steel or fiberglass body construction; it is part of the nature of the characteristics of both materials. This explains the many distinctive styling advantages the Corvette has enjoyed over the years.
Chevrolet actually had some big ideas that involved a series of cars with a similar styling theme and fiberglass construction. Above is the Corvair and below is the Nomad. Poor sales of early Corvettes put an end to the plans. Both names would be applied to steel bodied models years later although the styling would be different. Interesting trivia dept.: The name Corvair is actually a combination of "Corvette" and "Bel Air", another Chevrolet model.
In the beginning, all Corvettes featured fiberglass bodies. The material was relatively new in 1953 when the first Corvettes appeared. It was renowned for its light weight - as per the photo to the right - and can be thought of as the carbon fiber of the 1950s. At that time only a few cars available to the public featured fiberglass bodies but the material was popular with design studios as it was a low cost method to quickly create interesting body styles. As the technology advanced, more modern composite materials were used and fiberglass, as used in the first Corvettes, was phased out. Corvette started life in fiberglass form mostly out of necessity. Only 300 were made in the first production model year and fiberglass is well suited to low volume production since creating the tooling to stamp out steel panels is expensive. Labor and supply problems with steel also contributed to the decision to build a fiberglass body for the Corvette. Years later Corvette production would climb to numbers that favored steel production which was more efficient as steel bodies did not need time to cure inside of molds. Tradition, always an important factor in the Corvette story, dictated that the distinctive fiberglass body material would remain in use. The use of fiberglass as a body material brings up another sometimes controversial Corvette subject: build quality. Through the years it has varied, being poor in the beginning and improving as customers demanded better paint jobs and fit / finish. Early Corvettes had large panel fit problems; you can even see this in the photographs, so up close and in person they are very obvious. Another problem is panel waviness. This can present a dilemma to anyone who is restoring a Corvette. Do

By Brian Gambony, Past Club President Someone asked my wife, “Why did you let your husband get a Corvette?” Her answer was quick and easy, “That way he won't be able to afford a girlfriend.” Hmmmm, could this be another sign that women are smarter than men? I actually didn't think she would let me get one. My love affair with Corvettes started with a 2002 Speedway White Coupe, and shortly afterward, we started our association with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Corvette Club. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Corvette Club (MSGCCC, for short) started in 1982 in Biloxi, by a group of Corvette enthusiasts who enjoy a variety of activities such as cookouts, road rallies, road trips, parties, cruise-ins and car shows. The club motto is “we cruise to eat and eat to cruise” so any event includes dining - after all, we have helped put some weight behind Mississippi's reputation as the most obese state. Club membership covers the Gulf Coast and extends from New Orleans to Pisa, Italy and up to Jackson, Mississippi, with several members from the Hattiesburg area. The Biloxi Lighthouse has always been on the Club's logo. Although it has changed over the years with the newer generation Corvettes, the iconic lighthouse is a part of our identity. The MSGCCC meets monthly on the last Thursday at our sponsor, Preston Hood Chevrolet in Biloxi. Our President is Robert Kline, who is always looking ahead for our next event. The MSGCCC has planned events each month, anything from road trips and car shows, to cruise-ins on the “off” weekends. We also look forward to “Cruisin' the Coast” as one of the participating car clubs, and right on the tail end of the Cruisin' week, we host our own Corvette Rendezvous. Going back thirty-one years, 1982 was the last production year for the third generation Corvette, also known as the “C3”, and they eagerly awaited the next generation a/k/a the “C4” which was finally released as an early 1984. Our club now features cars from all generations, especially from the later generations and to be expected, C1's and C2's are in short supply. It seems that those who eagerly waited for the new C4 held onto them, as we have a number of C4 owners in the club. As then, we are now awaiting the introduction of the next generation Corvette and had a preview on one of our road trips earlier this year. Looks like my C5 got just a little bit older. We are a proud member club of the National Corvette Museum, and have had our cars on display there for the past two years. By the way, Robert, when is our next pilgrimage to NCM? One of our C3 owners relays this story about his car that was in the museum: “My yellow C3 was built in October 1967, the 1,505th of 28,566 produced for the 1968 model year. The high performance 427 engine was assembled during August 1968 and eventually replaced the original 427, stolen in the early 1970's. The motor was ordered by Kiekhaefer Marine. In 1969, Carl Kiekhaefer resigned as president of the company and shortly thereafter the company's name changed from Kiekhaefer Marine to Mercury Marine. Besides a record-setting boat racer, Carl Kiekhaefer was an early NASCAR legend and, in 1998, the late Carl Kiekhaefer was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America at the Motorsports Museum in Novi, Michigan.” Some of the road trips from the past have included the track day at Talladega -- there are only two simple rules for this event - you can't pass anyone, and definitely can't pass the pace car; somehow someone in the club manages to get thrown off of the track, not one, but two years in a row. On another road trip we drove the “Tail of the Dragon” in the Great Smokey Mountains. For those who haven't been, it's 318 curves in 11 miles with no shoulders and few guard rails. I found that my C5 had an unexpected audio warning in addition to traction control warnings - it sounded something like this “QUIT WAVING TO THE OTHER CORVETTES AND GET BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL!”
There is nothing more exhilarating than an 18wheeler coming around the corner at you, half in your lane -- while on the edge of a cliff. I wonder if he stopped at Deal's Gap and got his Dragon T Trip -Shirt. Fortunately, I t o Ta il of t he D packed spare shorts. That ragon weekend, we stayed in a quaint lodge called the Fontana Inn, set in the mountains. Yet another road trip found us on the deck of an aircraft carrier for the “Jets and Vettes on the Lex” event. This one was a charity event for Wounded Warriors. They loaded 300 Corvettes onto the flight deck of the retired aircraft carrier USS Lexington on display in Corpus Christi. Getting on and off the carrier was an event, as they loaded 15 or so cars onto the side elevator for a ride up the side to the flight deck.
This year is our 20th “Vettes by the Shore” all Corvette car show. It has been hosted by the Edgewater Mall in Biloxi since 2010; prior to that it was a weekend long event held in the Biloxi Coliseum. As with the other car shows there is always a beneficiary and we are no different. The MSGCCC supports the Gulf Coast CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program and other Gulf Coast charities. As the show is in early November, hopefully we saw you there. Oh, about that girlfriend . . . with all this activity and excitement, it looks like I don't have the time for one after all, but that's OK, my wife is right there enjoying the excitement, too! Save the Wave, Brian

Corvette Wagon: The Callaway Aerowagon Shooting Brake Moves Forward By: J. Chance - Rides.com Corvette Wagon anyone? A few months ago Callaway released a concept of the Corvette "Aerowagon" based on the all new Corvette Stingray which is what is known as a "Shooting Brake". Historically a Shooting Brake was a vehicle used for the purpose of carrying hunters (shooting parties), guns and equipment, along with dogs and game. In a more modern context a Shooting Brake now describes a custom two-door wagon built on top of a performance car chassis. This is definitely one of those ideas that you either love or you hate. Apparently, this is more than just a concept now and Callaway is actually planning on moving forward with this concept. Unfortunately, they can't put seats in the additional cargo area due to the Corvette chassis and running gear configuration. So you'll get more storage area, but you can't fit any more people in the back (comfortably at least). The hatch-back is made from carbon-fiber which makes it both light-weight and strong. It appears to be pretty aerodynamic based on the renderings so performance probably won't be too adversely affected. Then again, I'm not an aerospace engineer, but Callaway claims the AeroWagon can reach speeds just topping 200 MPH. Initially Callaway stated that the add-on kit would cost around $15,000, however the latest price floating around out there has increased to $22,995 (not including the car of course). Have a look at these images and let us know your serious opinion of this Corvette Grocery-Getter.
When you’re a car guy that’s what you dream about, and talk about, spend your extra cash on, and if you have the knack you draw them. Check out the work of Mississippi Gulf Coast’s own Vince Hoda. Vince has been drawing cars, truck, bikes, race cars, drag cars, fact is if it has wheels or looks fast he is going to put it on paper. “I’ve been drawing cars for as long as I can remember and I enjoy doing portraits of peoples Hot Rods and Cars or Trucks. It started awhile back when a friend asked me to draw her husband’s car. She wanted to surprise him with a present for Christmas, and I guess that was the my first paid drawing.” Vince can even take your ideas and incorporate them to create a wild rendering of your future project. This 1964 Firebird belongs to 14 year old Chase Hanson. His dad Gary helped Chase change out some parts and work on the mostly stock engine. They did some re-chroming and kept the interior stock. This is one clean little firebird and Chase is ready to drive it‌. but waitin’ is the hard part...
This is my 1981 DeLorean DMC-12. I purchased her in June 2011 covered in that old and faded red paint. In February of 2013 I finally had enough of people asking why she was red or telling me she was just a pile of bondo. I used a chemical stripper to remove the paint and was thankful to find mostly intact stainless. There were a few trouble spots but nothing some 80 grit and time couldn't fix. Zero bondo. While she was down I took care of an exhaust leak and painted the engine. She's running the stock PRV V6 with performance exhaust and Renault 5 speed transmission. The acceleration isn't spectacular but the Lotus suspension and stability at high speeds makes her a fun cruiser. I still have to paint the fascias and fix the interior but I'm enjoying my stainless wonder more than I ever imagined. Kenny Zaborny, Lillian, AL www.CoastCruizers.co www.CoastCruizers.com

We found this 1929 steel body, Dodge Roadster roadside in Arkansas. Titled as pick-up truck, it is equipped with 1984 Chevy 305 short block powers the rear wheel drive thru a 350 Turbo automatic transmission and ten bolt rear end. Edelbrock 94 carburetor, eight inch chrome Edelbrock air cleaner, Edelbrock chrome valve covers in addition to other chrome accessories, etc. Speedway 917 radiator. Chasse & suspension — Steering is Mustang rack & pinion., wheels are14 inch front w/ moon disc hubcaps and 15 inch wides, chrome spoked on the rear.
The build is typical, however what makes it an eye catcher is the interior. The 1987 Saturn buckets seats are covered in brown and white cowhide, with trim in brown leather pattern. Same on the interior doors, also rear and lower front panels. The unique design & installation of the of the interior was left up to Headliners Plus, Brian Hagwood and his staff. I furnished the large cowhide decorator rug, removed from my office prior to my retirement. I left the install to Mr Hagwood., I now understand why he is the " go to " man when it comes to seats and interiors. Brian said this is the first install of this kind and has not seen anything similar. Harold M Thibodeaux - Pass Christian, Mississippi
I just wanted to let you know how everyone was impressed with the interior installed by Headliners Plus. During the Crusin the Coast event numerous people asked, (What is It ?), that is the hide is a Zebu, a type of African Oxen. The hide was a decorator rug I removed from my office after I retired...Harold

Kerry Cooper from Humble Texas traded some old sheet metal from a job he just finished to a fellow who was building a barn, for an old 37 Plymouth pick-up that was parked out in the field. After three years of chopping, channeling, cutting, fabricating, frame modifications, bagging, and stuffing in a 6.1 Hemi under the hood, he drove it to the Long Horn Rod Run in Old Spring, TX. The candy burgundy metal-flake and hot rod flat black truck was resting comfortably on frame as passerby's took their best shots. Inside the cab the look was a combination new ol’ school...modern comforts sounded by retro styling and wrapped with hand tooled leather work. That’s Kerry beside his handy work. Just in case your wondering, he did the work himself and it’s built to drive.

Lasting impression By Angelo Van Bogart The Fyke family's 1961 De Soto two-door hardtop is more than a family heirloom, it's something of an heirloom to the community of Jackson, Miss. “Dr. Fyke's grandfather developed and managed Westland Plaza, which was the largest shopping center in Mississippi in the 1960s,” said Mike Martin, who recently preformed a nutand-bolt restoration on the Fyke family's De Soto. “He ran that place out of this red-and-white De Soto and a lot of people have come up to me and said, 'I remember this car. Mr. Fyke would run us off when we were hanging out at the Shoney's and drag racing.'” “The car was very well known in that part of our city,” confirmed Dr. Frazier Earl Fyke III, Mr. Frazier Earl Fyke's grandson and the current caretaker of the De Soto. “My grandfather had himself deputized by the local sheriff, who was a good friend, and he would run the kids off who were hanging out not buying anything at Shoney's drive-in at Westland. They would say, 'Here comes Mr. Fyke in his De Soto.' As youngsters, my brother and I used to ride with him. They knew he meant business, but he was very nice about it.” The De Soto kept a very public life through the 1980s, when Mr. Fyke finally stopped driving at age 86. At that time, it was retired to the parking of the medical clinic of the late Dr. Frazier Earl Fyke jr for all of Jackson to see. By then, the car was about a quarter of a century old, and was the car Mr. Fyke owned for the longest period of his life. Before the red -and-white '61 De Soto, Mr. Fyke had a new car in his driveway every year. “The De Soto-Plymouth-Mercedes dealership here was owned and operated by various members of my family and was called Robinson Brothers,” Dr. Fyke said. “The original Robinson brothers were related through marriage to my grandfather. Every year my grandfather, who was the dealership manager, would buy a new De Soto. He said he felt like he couldn't ask another man to buy a new car every year if he didn't buy one himself.” Although the train of De Sotos changed from year to year during the life of the marque, one thing always remained the same: “He told my mother it did not matter what color De Soto he owned as long as it was red,” Dr. Fyke recalled. “Of course, the Chrysler folks elected to stop making the De Soto after 1961, and that ['61] was the last automobile he ever bought. Because he wanted customers who had also bought De Sotos to have confidence that they could always get service for their cars, he promised to drive his longer than any of them

would keep their own cars. And I think he did.” After the Nov. 30, 1960, termination of De Soto production, Robinson Brothers continued selling Plymouths and Mercedes through the early 1970s. The dealership was truly a family enterprise and also included Dr. Fyke on its payroll, if for but a brief summer. “In the mid 1960s, I worked the grease rack down there one of those summers,” Dr. Fyke said. “The car I drove in high school was a 1941 Plymouth that a lady from McComb, Mississippi had bought new from my grandfather and traded in on a new Plymouth in 1962 or 1963. That was the loyalty folks had for the dealership they went to.” Even after De Soto and the Robinson Brothers dealership, which closed its doors in 1972, were gone, Mr. Fyke maintained his loyalty to the car and to the DeSoto brand through the last years of the dealership and his new career managing the shopping center. When he stopped driving in 1985, his family honored his loyalty to the car, keeping the car stored in various places. It was never driven, save for one memorable experience. “The film 'Mississippi Burning' was filmed here in Mississippi in 1988 " Dr. Fyke said. ”The car was perfect as far as vintage, and so my father volunteered it for use. Leroy Martin, the mechanic that had worked on the car at Robinson Brothers, came out of retirement to get it running, and it has a cameo part in that movie. It is there in living, red color. “After that, the car was parked in the lot of my dad's clinic for several years and it just sat out in the weather,” Dr. Fyke said. “In 1990, I had it moved out to the carport behind my parents' house where it would at least be under cover. Unfortunately, the roof leaked and the mice got in it.” Not only did mother nature weather the car, the De Soto weathered Dr. Fyke's own wellmeaning mother's efforts to preserve the car. “My mom would go back there to the carport where the car would get dirty and dusty, so mom would occasionally wash the car off real good with the hose,” Dr. Fyke said. “She would be out there watering plants and try to keep it clean for us, bless her heart, but, of course, all the seals were gone in the doors and trunk, so she would essentially put water in the car, so it www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
rusted out the pans.” As time passed, it became more obvious that returning the De Soto to its original glory would require a handsome amount of time and money. Since Dr. Fyke was concerned with raising three children and putting them through school, the De Soto was left to languish, falling farther into disrepair. At one point, it seemed as though the De Soto might go the way of Robinson Brothers and the De Soto marque. Both Dr. Fyke's sons encouraged the restoration. "My older son, who Is Frazier Earl Fyke IV and named for my grandfather, had begun collecting replacement parts ten years ago," said Dr. Fyke. “My second son Joel, who is in Stanford Law School, said, 'Dad, you can't let the car go, it's a part of family history,' so it was pretty hard to have someone haul it to the salvage yard.” With encouragement from all the family, Dr. Fyke began contemplating restoring rather than junking the De Soto. "My mother selling her house finally forced the issue," said Dr. Fyke. A friend that collects cars recommended Mike Martin, an enthusiast that restores his own cars and, occasionally, cars for other friends. After Dr. Fyke's inquiry, Martin looked over the car before committing to the project. “The car had sat outside for a good, long time, but it was really complete,” Martin said. “Every piece of stainless, all the brackets, all of the engine stuff was on there.” When it comes to restoring a rare 1961 De Soto, missing parts can make or break the project. Just 911 two-door and 2,123 four-door hardtop De Sotos were built in the 1961 model year, so hunting 1961-specific parts is as hard as digging for dinosaur bones in the desert. Fortunately, De Sotos share bodies with their contemporary Chryslers, and 1961 models were warmed-over 1960s, making metal a minor concern. Engine-wise, De Sotos and Chrysler Windsors of 1961 share a 265-hp, 361-cid V-8 and TorqueFlite transmission, easing mechanicals parts-hunting worries. However, the trim of canted-headlamp 1961 De Sotos stands apart from other Chrysler Corp. models, including earlier De Sotos. Although they were present on the Fyke family De Soto, most of these parts were rough. “That car was his pickup truck and it was full of tools and blueprints for that shopping center,” Dr. Fyke said. “I remember well riding around in the car with him, and there was not an un-dented piece of metal on the car, because if he had to push something out of the way, he pushed it with that automobile. “Gran was from southern Illinois and grew up on a farm there, and he knew how to work on anything that ran on gas or diesel,” Dr. Fyke said. “He could go into the service
department of the dealership and get an engine working, so he kept that car running and took care of the engine, but he wasn't into outward appearances, so it had lots of dents.” Despite its obvious faults, Martin agreed to take on the De Soto's restoration in early 2010. From the moment the car entered the shop, it began telling its story. “I had to buy another front bumper from a salvage yard, because the original front bumper looks like a battering ram,” Martin said. “He carried such a load in the trunk he had knocked off the pinion snubber.” Along with miscellaneous tools, Martin also found several wrappers from the White Owl cigars Mr. Fyke was famous for chomping any
replate it. I did some of that, like the front grille, which was in four parts, but it's supposed to be two parts. You just about can't tell.” Among the unique 1961 De Soto parts Martin could not locate was a pair of backup lamp lenses. 1961 Chrysler and De Sotos share rear fenders, but on Chryslers, these lenses are red for the tail lamps. However, the tail lamps are mounted in the fin of 1961 De Sotos with the backup lamps mounted in the body, where tail lamps are found on Chryslers. “Those backup lamps are prominent, so we had to do something,” Martin said. “There is a guy that makes those backup lenses, but I was never able to hook up with him. So, on the
the restoration and preparing to deliver the De Soto back to the Fyke family, many of whom have already seen the near-completed car. Of them, Sidney A. Robinson jr, son of one of the original Robinson brothers and owner of the dealership at the time Mr. Fyke bought the car, was uniquely positioned to pay Martin the ultimate compliment. “Mr. Robinson is 89, and when Dr. Fyke brought him by here to see the car, he said, 'That is the car I ordered when I had the dealership and it looks better now than when it was new,” Martin said. In anticipation of the De Soto's return, Dr. Fyke has cleared out a space in his closed garage where the car will be safe, far away

time he was driving the car. Even some of the car's parts reminded Martin of the fame the De Soto carried around Jackson. “I took the hood, fenders and trunk lid to a place to get e-coated and when I pulled up to the place, he said, 'Is it for a Chrysler?' I said, 'No, it's a De Soto,' and he said, 'Is that from that red-and-white De Soto that was parked at the clinic?'” Over the course of the restoration, Martin, who typically restores General Motors products, said he became an expert on 1961 De Sotos. He found such sources as Gary Goers and SMS Auto Fabrics to be excellent sources for new “soft” parts. For other parts, Martin scoured the internet for replacements and entrusted service providers to restore both the car's existing and replacement parts. “I took the stainless off and brought it to a friend who is a real expert at bringing that stainless back, and he worked 82 hours getting that stainless straight and shiny,” Martin said. “Some of it was bent to heck and back.” Other bright work posed different challenges. “Some of the pot metal was broken, and I sent it to a place in Indiana - J&P Plating- and they can fix pot metal and then
backup lights, we made them using a florescent lamp lens that we had to heat up and bend to fit in the housing.” When it came to the body, the rust was concentrated in the trunk and interior floor pans, the rear window channel and one of the rocker panels. Fortunately, these body parts are shared with 1960-'61 Chryslers and all but the w i n d o w c ha n ne l a r e r e p r o d uc e d . Mechanically, the entire drive train was rebuilt and made to work like new or, in the case of the air conditioning unit, better than new. “We put an aftermarket air conditioning unit in it, because Dr. Fyke wants to drive the car, but that's the only change we made,” Martin said. “I left the old heat and air box on the firewall so other than the compressor, it looks real stock. We painted the compressor black like those big, old MoPar compressors used to be.” Now, after a little more than the year, Martin is fine tuning www.CoastCruizers.com www.CoastCruizers.com
from garden hoses and the harsh realities of a parking lot, ready for generations of Fykes young and old to continue enjoying the De Soto. “It's a nostalgic feeling for all of us grandchildren, great grandchildren, great nephews and nieces, and assorted cousins,” Dr. Fyke said. “We don't usually remember what cars people have, but if there is one thing that recalls our childhoods, it's this car of granddaddy's we all so fondly remember.”

We made it back to Old Town Spring, TX the last of September. Had a great show and found a new place to eat. There is a little restaurant in Old Town that is open 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm. During the weekend of the Long Horn Rod Run it is open for breakfast. The name of the place is Ellen's, named after the wife of the couple who own the restaurant. It has room for 50 inside and another 50 on the covered patio. Alan is the husband and the two of them have been in the restaurant business for 37 years. They raised two children, who decide they didn't want to work the long hours, so they left and found 8 to 5 jobs. The building the restaurant is in was built in 1932 and had also been a retail store. ‌. The food was real good. The house special is the chicken salad and the chicken salad sandwich. I had the Reuben sandwich which was great. Sharon had a ham and Swiss that had enough ham for two sandwich. Others had the trio salad which had chicken, tuna and seafood on a salad. There are a lot of different sandwiches that I won't try to list here. The sandwiches come with one of the six sides they have. Now after the lunch you can go get home made ice cream, pie, cake or fudge in the ice cream parlor which is in the same room divided by a wall that has glass half way up. The prices are good and you get plenty of food.
Mr. Alan also does one other big thing around Old Town, ... around Christmas time, the town goes all out with lights and decorations. He runs the old train that kids can ride around town for a small fee. This is for a charitable organization and 95% of the money goes to this organization. If you ever get out to Old Town Spring, Tx. go by Ellen's and try some of the great food or have some apple pie with a scoop of ice cream or some fudge. I know I will be going back.

Terry Mason’s WOW! The one word that comes to mind for this year’s Cruisin The Coast! This Mississippi Coast event has truly turned into a monster event. There is no way to adequately describe this event to someone that has not been here and experienced the madness! Right now this show has to rival any car show in the country now. No joke, it is an experience that is hard to share and properly give it justice. What do you tell people about this show that makes them fully grasp what CTC is all about? It’s about thousands and thousands and thousands of cars, tens of thousands of people, incredible events, great music and more eye candy than the mind can perceive. The 7,042 registered cars is pretty impressive, but what about the thousands of cars that are not old enough to register. What about the thousands and thousands that for one reason or another don’t register. Now I have a problem with not registering, because all of us in the car culture need to get behind and support this event. We have something truly special here we have to protect, support it and nurture it with all our being. My brother Ken and his wife Linda were finally able to make it to CTC this year and it was a lot of fun to take them under our wings and pack in as much CTC as we possibility could the last 4 days. Seeing the event through a rookie’s eyes is priceless! Knowing the ends and outs of the event, all the back roads, timing of the events and the drive times all help. I can’t imagine how a first time cruiser can deal with it all without help. I had been working on Ken to come to CTC for a few years now, but there was always something that got in the way. This year they came, they saw, they were wowed and they are already making plans to come back next

year. They too wondered how they could describe this event to their friends. Words, even pictures when you look back on the shots you took do not relay the majesty of the event. If you’ve never been, you need a mentor to help you deal with what to do when and where you need to be at what time. There are so many venues, so many bands, so many events inside the event; you almost think wherever you are, that all the cars must be where you are. It’s mind boggling. You have to carefully map out where and what to do and the possibilities are endless. The Coast Cruizer’s have proved they know how to pull off a major event for two years in row and promise you haven’t seen anything yet! This year’s MEGA Cruize-in on the final night of CTC was also an incredible event to put a period on an awesome week! The Coast Cruizers have really upped the ante. Over 1,000 cars and am estimated 5,000 people coming through the event. The MEGA 50/50 jackpot was over $2,400 dollars with the winner taking home over $1,200 dollars. Auto Zone stepped up with over $3,000 dollars in door prizes. The Coast Cruizers also presented a coast family, with a beautiful young daughter with special needs, a Ford van complete with a wheel chair lift. Many area sponsors donated to the effort and funds raised from club events made it all happen. The family was also presented with $1,000 Wal-Mart gift card and $325 check. The club already has $1,500 in the pot for the next van we’ll give away at next years MEGA Cruize-in to another coast family. It was a very emotional presentation and experience. The challenge to us all is to try and explain what CTC is all about… through words, pictures and stories. Good luck on making that happen. You might try just kidnapping them and bringing them to the show, I’m sure they won’t file charges, LOL. As the column hits the streets and you have a chance to read it in the November issue, we’ll be making final plans or be headed already to another great show, Emerald Coast Cruisin in Panama City Beach, FL., going on November 4-9. It’s wraps up the 2013 season and is another incredible show you don’t want to miss with over 2,000 cars in a beautiful setting. Terry Mason’s Hot Rod Show will be there Thursday, Friday and Saturday, hope to see you there also. Be sure and drop by the Hot Rod Show trailer and say howdy. Til next month…

Fall is really here and I'm so happy to be enjoying the weather and getting back to my less crowded matinee features. All the kids are back in school and its a nice time to crank up the Harley and ride to the theaters. Also, this time of year has a plenty of tailors that don't always feature super heroes and happy endings and.....It's drama time and I have three good films to review. First up is Prisoners, a movie I have been excited about watching and it did not let me down. The directed is Denis Villeneuve and was it written by Aaron Guzikoski. The rating is R and the genre is crime/drama. It has a running time of 2h and 33m. This gritty drama stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gellenhall, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Paul Dano and Mario bello. I love a script driven project that is down and dirty and i was not disappointed. The premise of this crime tale is set in the suburbs were kids play outside and neighbors get together on holidays and weekends. Just your average middle class story that has a ending I did not see coming. The story starts with to neighborhood families get together for a good time but something goes wrong fast. While the parents are breaking the ice and getting caught up a couple of the younger kids ask permission to go outside and play. Then the film turns dark when the children end up missing with no clue what happened. The real life, day to day feeling portrayed by the director makes this story work on many levels. Jake Gellenhaal plays the detective assigned to the case. The only flaw I care to mention is there was not enough back story on his character. He had a certain look that did not fit a regular detective's dress code and I bet it was a good story that didn't make the final edit. The two families handle this tragedy differently. This is what drives this drama and gives the dimension needed for a good film. Jackman is a hands on, in your face father who will do anything to find his missing child. Terrence Howard is more of a pacifist and the tension between the two families desperately searching for the missing children keeps you on the edge of your seat. I don't want to be a spoiler but I can say that the stand out performance goes to actor Paul Dano. He plays a hapless, mentally ill suspect who gets the brunt of Hugh Jackmans anger and impatience as I he takes matters into his own hands. But he needs help and the only person to help him does not believe in violence but wants results just as much. The blue collar, lower middle class characters get way over their heads and like I mentioned earlier, you wont see the ending coming! I give this drama 8 out of 10 pics. Next up we have another drama titled gravity. It was directed by Alfonso Cauron and also written by him and Jonas Cauron. It is rated pg -13 and the genre is sci fi drama/thriller with a run time of 1h 31m. The stars are Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Also, Ed Harris has a supporting role. the story is based on a NASA repair mission that goes wrong, real wrong. You could say that Clooney was type cast as a veteran astronaut that takes all the mishaps in stride and has seen it all before. I have seen him play this type character before but he does a good job of playing himself on film. Sandra Bullock is some kind of Dr. who becomes a astronaut by default because she had designed the system that they are up there to repair. They have other crew members with them but you can guess who is in it to win it and who goes home early. The script is a little to easy to see coming down the Milky Way but these top box office draws no how to make it work. This one is really hard to discuss without giving away all the outer space suspense. Clooney keeps his head and tries to salvage the mission and keep a scared and confused Bullock who seems to be way over her head. You can see this ending coming but it does have some solid acting by America's sweetheart and Hollywood's favorite playboy. I had to check the running time twice but i guess it comes in way under two hours, which is a good thing. I give this space mission gone wrong a 7 out of 10 pics.
Last up is a wide release film called Rush. This car racing movie was directed by Ron Howard and written by Peter Morgan. It is rated R and the genre is action/drama. It has a run time of 2h 3m. This movie is based on the true story if two formula 1 race care drivers who intense rivalry on and off the course makes a great story to be told on the big screen. Being a Steve McQueen fan had me having flashbacks of another car racing movie titled Lemans. But McQueen's tale of speed, danger and driving skill was a bomb at the box office and not a well done movie. Some say he was to close to the subject and couldn't tell the story. Ron Howard didn't repeat this problem and did a good job moving this true life high speed drama down the straight way, wide open and not holding anything back. Daniel Bruhl plays racer Niki Lauder who comes from a wealthy family but breaks away to live his own life on the race track. He is a cold and calculating person that leaves nothing to chance on his way to victory. Actor Chris Hemsworth plays race driver James Hunt. Mr. Hunt has a different way of racing and lets it all hang out on and off the track. A good looking womanizer man who has raw talent and nerves of steel but either wins or crashes his way through life on and off the raceway. A great script and a director's touch makes this true story come to life on film. This can be hard to do when your recreating something that happened in real life not to long ago. This is one of the great rivalries in sports that happened in the 70's but has not been told before now. The action takes place in Europe where the two drivers work their way though the ranks to challenge each other for the big time in road racing. It is interesting watching the two men achieve what they work hard for. The playboy who seems to only care about partying until he is beat by a man who is a loner and who has no friends is a classic tale that dates back to the bible. I loved this movie and really enjoyed how they made you feel the true danger these people face every time they get on the track. Having raced motorcycles for most of my life gives me a tiny bit of insight on what it takes to be a winner in racing. It takes total dedication and total focus. One mistake at 200 miles and hour can kill you fast and this movie drives that point home. I think that is the main theme of this true life trill ride. I know everyone can enjoy this trill ride of a film. Being set in the 70's has it's good sides, plenty of cool cars, beautiful women, parties and bad haircuts! The true to life ending is bittersweet at best and teaches a life lesson rings true in any decade. I give this film 8 out of 10 pics. When I got up in the a.m. (about 5:30) its dark, making it hard to see my backyard “Pineapple's Beach” as I call it. After Katrina the power company had to put in a pole for our new house, so for $9.00 a month we have a pole for our power, setting in 35 feet from the street with a street light that lights up the front yard, driveway and about ½ of Pineapple's Beach in back. Larry has a 1977 Lincoln Mark V that's kind of a rust bucket and doesn't run, (was running when he parked it) but I still love it. It was my wedding present! (it's for sale) Every morning the light shines on it. I have to wait till 6:45 a.m. before I can go outside and rake my sand and spray for weeds. Sorry Mike from the VFW in BSL (no riding lawn mower for me). Enough of this, lets talk a little of Hawaii: Waikiki's beachboys were a fascination mix of men. They predominantly were Hawaiian and part-Hawaiians, ruled spiritually by the great swimmer, Duke Kahanamoku, and officially by William (“Chick”) Daniels, a strapping six-footer with a personality as wide as

the beach. Panama Dave, his sidekick, was designated clown prince. Beachboys all seemed to have improbable names or nicknames and to be a bit, different, George (“Tough Bill”) Keaweamahi, as an example, was so tough that he could pop the cap of a bottle of beer with is thumb. Joseph (“Scooter Boy”) Kapuiki had a “poi dog,” or mongrel, that he taught how to surf. Legend says that beachboys were tireless womanizers, but there are those who maintain that the beachboy's have always “lied like hell” about their sexual exploits. Contrary to popular belief, skeptics maintain that there were racial barriers that were not easily crossed by Hawaiians, along with a strict code of conduct In effect for beachboys. Back to Mississippi: Earlier this month, George Mayfield of Bay St. Louis died of liver cancer. He was a great fisherman, and his dad was the senior pilot on Delta Airlines. I went to the memorial that was held at Buccaneer Park. I've been told he was a golden Glove boxing champion in the 70's and Katrina got the golden glove miniatures that he had hanging on the wall. I was day bartender at Harold & Lillian's Bar (Clermont Harbor) for about 3 years. I only worked Sat. & Sunday. George would come in every morning, drank his beer and loved to play pool with Mikey. One morning when I opened the bar in walks George with a big pineapple and sets it on the bar! He say's nothing! But I knew! It had been over a month since I made my Pineapple's Hawaiian Chili. Every Sat and Sun. from 9 a.m. -12 p.m I served pupu's (appetizers) for my bad boys, George, Beas,, David, Ray, Mikey, Burk,Roger, Joe George, Paul, Charlie Bob. My bad boys were famous for their safety meetings. It's Monday morning and time for me check the new breakfast place in town. It opens at 6 a.m - 12 noon. (7 days a week) Called Wild Bills Diner , 228 Colemen Ave. in Waveland, MS . (see ad in black & white flyer) Wild Bills Diner is in the Waveland Business Center across from the City Hall. Since Larry knows Wild Bill he said he wanted to go! We got there about 8 a.m. Plenty of parking on the street. You walk up the stairs to the diner. They have tall tables out side the restaurant. All glass as you walk up to the restaurant. As you walk in they have tables to the right and the kitchen in front. Left is more tables. This is a no smoking place. But you can eat outside at the tall tables. Prices are right and on Sat. and Sun. they have breakfast specials like my absolute Favorite Eggs Benedict. At this time cash only . (see ad in the black & white insert) It's Wednesday and time for me to check out the new restaurant & bar (formerly C&R Bar). It is now called TRI-R-BAR. They are open 7 days a week. Serve food 7 days a week starting at 10:30 am. - 3:pm. Dinner 4:00pm. -9 pm.. Two brothers are running the bar. One is the cook and the other runs the bar. I decided to try one of their lunch specials, 3 little hamburgers called sliders and French fries. It was very good! They plan on doing home delivery. Inside of the place has not changed yet. (see ad in the black & white insert) Diana owner of Dempsey's in the Kiln had her Cruise-in Party Oct. 12th. It was great! She had a great band and Super Dave of 102.3 was broadcasting and giving away t-shirts and other things. Between Dempseys and da Swamp Shack (gift shop) Diana had a huge white tent and tables. So, we could eat outside, listen to the band and go over and talk to Super Dave. We bought our buddy's 67 Cutless. We are trying to sell it for him. There were quite a few classic cars there. As I drove home, CC'S had few cars, Pops had a few cars and Kiln Bill's looked closed. Everybody must have been at Dempsey's! Last thing I wanted to remind you guys. Nov. 16 American Legion Post 139, in Bay S t. Louis are having their 1st Annual Car Show. Doors open 9 a.m. Plenty of parking. was. Now, asking questions during children's sermons is crucial, but at the same time, asking children questions in front of a congregation can also be very dangerous. Having asked the children if they knew the meaning of the "resurrection", a little boy raised his hand........ The pastor called on him and the little boy said, "I know that if you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hours you are supposed to call the doctor." Here it is! This is part two of John Knight’s experience at the Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, Kansas. He certainly enjoyed writing this piece for you all. You will see John out and about at car shows, while I’m running wildly around shooting photos. When you see him, how about giving him a little encouragement to write more for us in the future? Enjoy!
By: John Knight - 11/13 DIXIEPRESS MEDIA PHOTOGRAPHER / REPORTER
You know that moment when your are first waking up and you realize when a great day is just ahead? The anticipation, the excitement. You are like, “hurry up girl” we’re going to miss something. Well, by nine a.m. Saturday, the Oakdale park in Salina, Kansas was teaming with activity. Where Do you start? I noticed right away there were new vendors at the swap meet. Look! A B & M shifter for only $35, a new set of lake pipes and all the hardware for $100! Let the haggling begin. After many quick trips back to the suburban to squirrel away my treasures, on to the show! So how do I cover this because I don’t want to miss a single thing? Back to the Dodge Coronet chop top with Bill Hines, Allen Gambino and the Beatniks bandits. Wow! It’s like watching the conductor of an orchestra as Bill directs the crew through the final steps. Look over there! It’s Bo Huff chilling out in the shade of a huge oak enjoying a frozen treat. After I introduced myself, he talked to me like he had known me for years. After Bo gave me a tour of his bad ass ’49 Shoebox, we walked over to Voodoo Larry’s custom ’53 Chevy. Bo introduced us to Larry and his girl Colette, and soon plans were being discussed for us to do a photo shoot at his shop sometime in the near future. As Neecy and I were rubbing elbows with some of the Kustom car world royalty, I noticed a jet black caddy brought out to the show by Darrell Starbird. It looked like it was a mile long and about two miles deep! One of the unique things about this classic caddy, was that the body was lowered over a late model caddy chassis! What a great job and to see the fusion of old and new done by a master builder, was wicked bad! Ok, it’s time for the pin-up contest. What a variety of the fabulous female form. Twelve contestants and no two looked alike. From the girl next door look, to the girl you wished lived next door look! Once again, the Leadsled Spectacular had promised and over delivered! Wow! Being on custom car overload, looking out over the park, you see the most beautiful bodies ever created. Some by Mr. Ford, others by Mr. Chevrolet and even the Dodge brothers! But whatever brand they are, they are being customized by Mr. and Mrs. Hot Rodder. Well, enough of my ranting! If you get anything from this article, I hope you won’t wait 30 years to go to the Leadsled Spectacular like I did. I can’t believe I missed out on all of those fantastic shows! Oh, not to worry...I’ll not miss another one!

ome are in wheel chairs, most are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. I led off with Pauline last month, so its Race Cars to start this month.. Being 86 its hard to remember some of the events (other than dirt) that was interesting. One of my “Street Pals” was Jim Dunn. He was a great Funny Car dragster, and is still running a funny car as owner, mechanic, and chassis man. I tried to contact him thru “Jim Dunn Racing”, but you can't penetrate the sponsor people, and I 'm sure he never got the e-mail I sent. “Fireman Jim Dunn” was what he was called when they made a Hollywood movie about him. He and I used to see each other down at “Miller Crankshaft” in Lakewood, Ca. When I was driving the factory Pontiac for Ray Nichels, they had NASCAR STOCK CAR RACE at Gardena's Western Speedway. Well, I couldn't run NASCAR or I would lose my USAC license, so Harold Miller (owner of the Crankshaft Co.) suggested we ask Jim if he would like to try round de round on a dirt ¼ mile in the Pontiac. Jim said “sure I'll give it a try” cause all of us went to Gardena's Western Speedway to see Midgets, Stocks, Sprints, and in those days drivers started out in “Jalopies” and worked their way up, Parnelli Jones got his start in Jalopies at Gardena's ¼ mile. Anyway, we changed the # on the car, I always ran #43 before Petty became famous. We changed it to 48 for that one race. Jim did ok, he made the main and came in 12th or 14th. After the race he looked at me and Harold and smiled as he said “you can have dirt and an oval ¼ mile, I'll stick with asphalt and a straight ¼. Mike Dunn Jims son, was about 9 or 10 when I left, and he became famous as a driver and now as car chief in the drags. That's some deal huh? Note also in Crankshaft ad's Bonneville Records. My other favorite dragster, and streamliner owner-driver was my pal Ray Van Dorn. He died a couple of years ago, we were pals up in Oregon, we enlisted in the Navy together WWII, he went out on a destroyer and I went to the Seabees. You will note the photo of Ray and his 157 mph flathead at Madras, Oregon. Ray drove a brand new 1949 Ford down to Whittier, Calif. and had Fred Einhaus, Nellie Taylor, and Frietz Voight put together a drag engine from a 1946 Ford AB block. Nellie was famous for flathead pop up pistons and he brought his fullrace flathead pick up to Willow Springs to push me off in my midget at the SCCA race which I won. I was disqualified due to not having a starter or a transmission. The sports cars all lined up on each side of the front chute, with motors running and when the starter waved the flag they all took off! I'm setting there at the back with Nellie and his truck ready
to push me off. No starter, only 1 gear direct, starts when pushed. The flagman runs over to me and says “what's wrong?” I say “it's ok, I need them thinning out a little. He shook his head in wonderment and walked away. Well, Nellies truck would do a 100 in the ¼ at the drags (that was Santa Ana Drag strip, not Orange County today) He nailed the throttle and I was up behind the last car in about 6 or 8 seconds when he let me go. The track went up the side of the mountain hard right, than slow left, short straight and a wicked right at the bottom leading to the front straight which was about ½ mile long. I passed all 15 of them the 1st lap. That ended SCCA inviting Midgets to road races. Portrait of Mary Ann, one of the few blondes I ever dated. It was 1946, I'm going to college in my home town, Salem, Oregon and working at Bergs Grocery at 17th St. and Center Ave. Duties were bag boy, delivery truck driver, stock boy and janitor. One day Mary Ann walked in to pick up some groceries for her mom. (they lived about 4 blocks from the store). Salem was about 35,000 at that time. The store had 2 entrances one double in the front, and a single door on the side. She was a real picture coming thru the side doorway, sunlight behind her, and that long hair swinging down her back! I was stocking produce, and she walked over to me smiling and said “I'm getting a bunch of produce and its going to be too heavy to carry, would you mind delivering it for me”? Sure I replied, “but it will be after 5 if that's o.k.”? She smiled again “my folks are going to dinner at the Golden Pheasant (best restaurant in town) but I've got home work to do, so bring it when you can”. About 6:30 p.m. I pulled in the driveway, (store was open until 9 p.m., 7 days a week.) I walked up to the front door, rang the bell. She opened the door with her left hand and swing it wide open. This of course stretched the maroon blouse tight across her breasts which were 36's to start with. How did I know the size? Well, I didn't get back to the store until 8 p.m. and that was the only delivery I had.

Gulf Coast MotorSports is happy to announce that David Chapman aka “That Chapman Kid” will set up his display at this years Hot Rod Alley during the Emerald Coast Cruizin’. Drawing the iconic hot rods and characters from the Roth and Barris days with his own style didn’t come easy. That took years of practice and a lot of paper. David posted some of his early drawings (when he was about twelve) on his facebook site - That Chapman Kid. You will see just how far he has come since the early days. David is working as a full time graphics artist for a verity of clients designing logos, t-shirts, business designs, etc. and that pays the bills for the young married Chapman family. But he always makes time to return to his story board for another drawing that reminds of us of the early days when “Rat Fink” was king..
