By: Jimbo Welcome to all the Cruizers who have made the journey to our Mississippi Gulf Coast. There are so many things to see on the Coast it’s hard to choose what to do. Of course we have the o b v io u s e n terta inme nt venues, casinos, museum's, golf courses, charter boats, and some of the greatest local restaurants you could ask for. But if your looking for where the locals go—well you need to ask a local. There are plenty of local Coast Cruizers who will be happy to point you in the right direction, or just look for the Coast Cruizer logo on the doors or windows of some of our favorite businesses. Our Coast Cruizer Club members will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the Mississippi Gulf Coast. There are a lot of events to cover in the next few months. The cooler weather in October, November and December is a welcome relief from the 100 degree summer days. Me…. I can’t wait for the Emerald Coast Cruisin’ I have a great time and if you haven’t made this event, you should give it a try. Now there is a show in Madison, Mississippi that is growing every year. This year it is expected to be the largest yet. I’m talking about the 9th Annual Scarecrow Cruise & Car Show October 19-20 . Madison, Mississippi, is just 10 minutes north of Jackson off I-55, the city of Madison has become a central location for classic car show events. With up to 500 classic cars expected to converge in downtown Madison this has grown to be the largest car show event in central Mississippi. Friday's activities include vehicle registration and the annual Cruisen-4-Cash event. Cruisen-4-Cash provides registered participants an opportunity to drive their classics to 10 area locations where they can win $500 in cash and hundreds of door prizes such as gift cards to local restaurants, free oil changes, car washes as well as gift cards to area merchants. Everybody is a winner in this event. It will take 60 to 90 minutes to make all the stops. Saturday starts off with vehicle registration as well as another opportunity to drive your classic in the Classic Car Caravan. The caravan will start staging at 8:15am at beautiful Reunion Golf Course approximately 15 minutes from downtown Madison. At 9:00am the caravan, with a police escort, will make its way through the neighborhood and will then head toward downtown Madison to join other classic cars that are already in place. There were over 100 classic vehicles in last year's caravan. It is great seeing lots of local residents sitting in their lawn chairs in their front yards waiting to see the beautiful classic cars parade past their homes. Lots of cameras, big waves and thumbs-up from mom, dad and the kids. Everybody will have a great time participating in the caravan. Once at the show the smell from the food vendors will quickly get your attention. Hot coffee, juices as well as sausage and biscuits cooking on the grill will be hard to resist. On a cool October morning a big breakfast will certainly hit the spot. If you decide to bring the wife and kids don't worry about finding something for them to do. For the wife more than 50 merchants will have booths set up for the annual Shopping For SIDS. Hope Hollow's Silent Auction will also be of special interest to the ladies. The ladies will be busy, don't worry. For the kids a free two hour magic show from 11:30 to 1:30 will take place inside the old school's auditorium. Stage magic and balloon art by local magician Dorian LaChance will entertain the kids. Also, a special appearance by Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers will be a big surprise during the magic show. The kids will love it! The first 500 registered participants will receive an event dash plaque as well as an 18X24 full color event poster suitable for framing. More than 140 awards will be given out in various categories including Top 50 automobiles, Top 20 Trucks, Top 20 Street Rods, Top 20 Imports in

I don’t know what made me think of this but, back in the 1960’s, this guy from the high school I went to, Tommy, went on one of those safaris taking pictures in Kenya. He was in the school photography club and wanted to get up close to some wildlife. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Tommy approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Tommy worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face him, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Tommy stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Tommy never forgot that elephant or the events of that day. Twenty years later, Tommy was walking through the Philadelphia Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Tommy and his son Tommy Jr. were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Tommy, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at Tommy. Remembering the encounter in 1960, Tommy couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. Tommy summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Tommy’s legs and slammed his stupid ass against the railing, killing him instantly. Probably wasn't the same elephant. Speaking of remembering high school days, remember drivers-ed? There is a drivers test on the next page, see if you can answer the questions. I hate to admit it but I failed my first drivers test because the guy asked me “what do you do at a red light?” and I said, I don’t know… look around, listen to the radio… man the guy had no sense of humor at all!!!! Till next month… Jimbo

It’s the “Hula Monkey”. I haven’t seen this car in a few years. This car was started years ago, a project that was being worked on a little at a time. I was taking pictures of another car and the “Hula Monkey” was up on jack stands. I often wondered about the infamous hot rod and what was to become of it. Here it is at Dunaway Glass getting ready for a window treatment. I was really surprised as to who the new owner is and soon you will see this car on the road. I’ll have the story and pictures soon till then, just this photo to make you remember “The Hula Monkey”……….. Jimbo
By: J Roberts Where is a café you can go and get a good breakfast and talk fishing also. J. E. and I have visited this place quite a few times. I am talking about the Palace Café and Restaurant in downtown Gulfport. It has been in downtown for over 50 years. It started out a block over to the west, where the parking garage for Hancock Bank now sets. In 1977 it moved to the present location on 25th Ave. Mr. Don Parks (the owner) had been running the café, along with his daughters and his wife until early this year. Mrs. Parks passed away the first part of this year and has been greatly missed. Lori one of the daughters has been waiting on tables for her dad for 26 years and Kelli has been doing the same for 20 years. J. E.'s wife and Lori went to school together so J. E. has known Lori for some years. The food is great both breakfast and lunch. The best thing for breakfast is the smoke link sausage. It come from a meat packing company in Hattiesburg. I always get a double order of the link sausage with my eggs. There are the usual sandwiches for lunch and a lunch special everyday. They also make their on deserts , the peach cobbler is real good. I think it was a Tuesday that they have cobber. Now if Mr. Don is there you can find out where the fish are biting and maybe which bait he is using. There are several men that meet in the morning and talk fishing, where to go and what to use. If it is like most fishing stories you might have to take that story about the one that got away with a grain of salt. The café is open from 6:30am until 2pm Monday thru Friday. Close Sat and Sun. Go by and say “Hi to Lori and Kelli” Look for the Coast Cruizers decal on the window because we eat there.

There’s a new dog in town and owner Julius Landry says it’s the best dog in the world! The dog is of course Sloppy Dogs on North Second Street in Bay St. Louis, an eatery offering a new dimension in gourmet hot dogs on the Gulf Coast. Few restaurants even offer a good hot dog anymore, but the American classic is reaching new heights at this hot spot featuring quality ingredients, an innovative menu and a friendly environment. The heart of this new dog is an all-beef, natural casing hot dog that is plainly superior to any commercially available hot dog on the Coast. The proof is in the tasting and this dog won’t let you down. The flavor is assertive, the texture firm and its big enough to fill the bun as it should. The menu, just like the establishment, is diminutive. The building comes in at just about 164 square feet, not including patio with its umbrella topped tables outside. But small as the menu is it packs a powerful punch with a great selection of hot dog and sandwich specialties. The Original Sloppy Dog comes in three
Expires 10/31/12
sizes and is loaded with chili, cheese, onions and mustard. If you missed the fact that this place is called the Sloppy dog a couple of bits into this dog, and a hand full of napkins later and you’ll know why. It’s big, it’s messy and it is great. Get the large size for only seven dollars, it’s called the Bay Dog, and you’ve got a meal two could enjoy. Another standout is the Chicago Dog, an authentic recreation of one of the most famous hot dogs in the world. This hot dog lover’s favorite is stacked with sport peppers, a relish that you will take notice of, tomato wedges, onions, mustard, crunchy pickles and celery salt; order extra napkins with this one too. All of the eleven hot dogs on the menu look great, some are pretty simple like the Polish Dog that comes plain, or any way you like it, but others like the Pizza Dog and the Slaw dog are imaginative combinations that beg to be tried. But a visit to The Sloppy Dog would not be complete without sampling some of the non-dog offerings. The Philly Cheesesteak brings the house down and the Fish Tacos, a new arrival on the Coast, is a winner with three tacos served on garlic buttered tortillas for just six dollars; add cheese if you’re feeling heady and really hungry. There are also healthy fries, Zapps Kettle Cooked Chips and, unbelievably, thirty three kinds of beer available. The Sloppy Dog is also the only place on the Coast that serves Abita Root Beer on tap. The food is good, the portions are generous and the prices are right, so who could ask for more? Well owner Julius Landry closes the deal by making sure The Sloppy Dog is a family friendly, even dog friendly place (look for the food and water bowls outside), where his enthusiasm for his customers, his food and his new home of Bay St Louis is hard to miss. This is a great place for a quick meal on the run, a leisurely dog on your day off or a Sunday get together with friends. As Seen In See South Mississippi’s Newcomers & Visitors Guide

by: Larry Dunham Some are in wheelchairs, many are dead, none of my articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them. Lot of the readers say to me “how could you manage to know all those girls?” Facts are this: War II started 12/7/41 and all guys 17 and up rushed off to enlist in 1942. (Including my big brother) I was 15 and there sure were a lot of girls around with no boy friends! I didn't get married until I was 27. After getting married I ran 2 more years and “hung it up” in 1963. So I was 12 years eligible and looking around and you readers know some of the “happenings”. If there were 2 different ones a month that would be 24 a year X 12 years =? Also I might add, during the summer racing season we averaged 2 tracks a week, from Playland Park (Galveston, Tex. a where I started) to Bakersfield, Ca. where I finished. In between were many, many, tracks, at Hunstville, Al., Atlanta, Ga. (Peach Bowl) Owensboro, Ky., West Memphis, Ark., Memphis, Tenn., Soldiers Field, Ill., Mt Carmel, Joliet, Evansville, Laurenceberg, Cedar Rapids, Springfield ¼ and Springfield mile rubber bowl at Akron, Ohio. And too many Calif. tracks to mention. Never got to run in Colorado, where my buddy Tolan and Mitch and his Dad got, to run. One of my favorite sports is Boxing (in the old days) when there was one (1) world champion, in any weight! Did you know John L Sullivan had 38 wins, 32 by knockout, 6 by decision and 1 loss to Jim Corbett (his last bout). Did you also know the term “Long Johns” came from the fact he wore tights all the way to his ankles? Hence the term “Long Johns” for underwear. After getting started midget racing in Texas (1949), I moved to Memphis, Tennessee with the two race car owner, Joe Lucy. The 1st car #4 pictured was driven by “Danny” Burke a great driver, race car fabricator and my mentor. Danny was hired by Pat Clancy located in Memphis, to work on a new concept for his Indy 500 race car. I was in 7th heaven, 22 years old racing midgets, and getting to work on the Pat Clancy Indy 500 car with Danny! This new Indy 500 car was to have tandem rear wheels! 2 rears on each side, one beside the driver and one further back. This chassis presented a real (CENTER OF GRAVITY”) problem. (CG) to you engineers. It never made the program, and after the '49 500 Pat tore it down. When one of the drivers died that you knew, and ran against, you sent a wreath, but you didn't go the ceremony. You didn't grieve or sorrow, but you did miss him, especially at certain tracks! Every month and sometimes every week one died. To give you an idea here is some from the 50's - Andy Linden 1959, Geo. Amick 1959, Ed Elesian 1959, Jimmie Bryan 1960, Walt Faulkner 1956, Pat O'Conner, 1958, Bob Sweskeat 1956, Marshal Teaque 1959, Bill Vukovich 1955, Joe James 1952, Jack McGrath 1955, Manual Ayulo 1955, Van Johnson 1959, Johnny Kay 1959. The following could fit anyone: He lived as the king of yesterday, he thought he would be the king of tomorrow, but his death at Langhorne was his families sorrow. Ok gals, you know who you are, and we now do another chapter on the 40's and early 50's. Its 1947 and I'm out of Seabees in WWII and attending college in Salem, Oregon. Why Salem? Well my mom was still alive, (she made it to 92) she was in her late 50's and was alone until my brother and I got home after the war. So, we moved in, (same house we were born & raised in) and got things rolling again. I was getting $110.00 a month on the G I BILL for school and working at “Bergs Market” as a “bag boy” after class for $1.25 an hour. 6 hours, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. 7 days a week. On Thursdays at 5 p.m. I took the 41 Chevy panel delivery truck, 6 cylinder stick three on the tree, and made deliveries till 8 p.m. This Thursday was most unusual, the name I recognized, but had never delivered there before. So I made it the last stop to be sure they would be
home. I pulled into the driveway at 7:00 p.m. and the light was on. I knocked on the back door, (no one delivered groceries to the front not in 1947 you didn't) so to the door comes someone, (I can't see who) (no window in the back door and the blinds are down on the kitchen window). The knob turned quickly and the door swung all the way open. Standing there, framed by the doorway, and the lights of the kitchen behind her was one gorgeous woman! She looked at me and smiled, and said, “I've seen you at the store several times, but your always to busy stocking for me to say hello”. “Would you like some coffee before unloading?” she asked. I hurriedly glanced down at the delivery ticket to see her name, and said “I sure would Mrs. Smith”. I knew I had never seen her in the store, but that was probably due to her coming in early afternoon, and leaving as I started when I was super busy stocking product that had already been sold. I went in, sat at the kitchen table and watched her pour the coffee. She looked at me with the pot in her hand and said “cream or sugar”? “Black like my heart” I replied. She smiled again as she sat down next to me. It was then I decided I wouldn't get fired if I made the wrong move. (across the table wouldn't have worked). She was wearing a maroon shiny silk skirt, a white button down the front blouse (tucked in) which showed considerable outward thrust and cleavage. I glanced down, high heels and no hose! (Now if you can't pick up on that, your not paying attention or you haven't been to the fair before!) It was about 5 minutes or so and she got up and said “Who is your favorite band?” I stood up, and replied “Glen Miller” and my favorite song is “At Last”, she then turned around, started the record and held her arms out to me. I slid in between them, and we started to dance. We hadn't danced over 30 seconds, her head on my shoulder, she tilted her head back closed her eyes and waited for me to kiss her. After the first kiss I looked at her and said “Where is Mr. Smith?” She smiled and replied “Divorced and gone”. Well we managed to crowd a lot of affection in the hour or so I was there that time. I was 20, she was 36, but as the weeks went by it was lucky for me she met “Mr. Right”, I didn't attend the wedding but she liked the wedding present she received in the back seat of my “40 Ford! If you don't take the risk it can't be fun! There are those who never win, never, since racing began - but there are others who win, and smile with the eyes of man. To the Dutchman, Ray Van Dorn, a Bonneville & Drag racer, Nellie Taylor, Fred Einhouse, Fritz Voight, Harold Miller, Le Roy Neumeyer, Rod Schapel! R.I.P. By: Terry Mason Barfield We all have to deal with crap in this world, every day! When you come home, you sure don’t want to deal with unnecessary bull. HOA means Home Owners Association. HOA’s can be good or bad. They serve a good purpose and the one we had was a good one at English Manor until the last election. HOA’s are a needed, making people keep their grass cut, garbage cans put up, etc., but they can be a nightmare also. Welcome to my HOA nightmare! If you leave Hwy 49 in Gulfport and drive .9 of a mile down Landon Road you’ll find English Manor subdivision on the left. A nice little inexpensive subdivision where the homes range in price from $99-$150,000. A nice, quiet, upscale little subdivision, until the dictator moved in. Not his name, but his actions. Nobody knew the house was even occupied until we started getting notes on our cars about parking in the public street. Billy soon became everyone’s pain if you parked on the street anywhere near his house. (People park in the street all over the subdivision because only about 2 cars fit in the driveways.) Then Billy was voted into a job that nobody wanted, president of the HOA. (Be careful who you vote for.) So now as president he learns he can’t stop parking in the street, so he goes after my event/car trailer. Billy is using his new found power to inflict his views as rules for the neighborhood. The trailer in question is the one I use to haul my TBucket, sound system and what-not to car shows. I bring it in to load and to unload; I pay to have it stored offsite so it’s never even in the subdivision for 24 hours. It’s something I’ve been doing for 2 ½ years. Since there was no covenant that dealt with a cargo trailer, Billy bent the rules a little bit and said the trailer was a RV/Motorhome/Camper that can never park in the subdivision. That deal has kind of blown up in his face since the state, county, insurance and the manufacturer all classify the trailer as a cargo trailer. Plus this guy has been making up his own rules as he goes. His last statement was that residents could ask him for permission, but only once a week. So you could load, but not unload until next weekend. Believe me… I’m not kidding. I’m not asking anyone for permission… are you kidding me? I’ve already consulted with an attorney. Almost everyone in the neighborhood is fed up. Any way…I thought you would like to know about any HOA that forbids a trailer to pull in and load or unload a car trailer. I feel like I’m living in a government owned housing project. The bad part is there are some really good people that live in the subdivision! If you would like to let Billy know how you feel about his anti car culture views, here is the e-mail address, info@englishmanorhoa.com. Also you can contact Evet at yourhoamanager@yahoo.com. She’s Billy’s paid HOA enforcer. I’ll update you on the outcome next month. With that crap out of the way... Welcome to the biggest Block Party in America…Cruisin’ The Coast. I look forward to the first week of October when we welcome the cool Hot Rods…this year from over 40 states. The Coast Cruizers welcome all cruisers. We expect thousands and thousands more that just come to have a good time. You are in the right place for one of the greatest get-togethers of Hot Rods, Street Rods, Classic Antiques, Muscle Cars and Rat Rods in the country. Truly an amazing week if you’ve never attended.

The Coast Cruizers will have a hospitality tent set up on HWY 90 in front of Edgewater Mall all week. We’ll be set up nightly, plus yours truly will be playing great oldies music on “The Hot Rod Show” Thursday and Friday night from 6 until 9 pm. The Coast Cruizers will also be selling tickets for the MEGA 50/50 Jackpot for Saturday night. Saturday night October 13, 6-9 pm is our annual Coast Cruizers MEGA CRUISE-IN at the hottest place to be on Saturday night…the west parking lot of Edgewater Mall. We’ll have our MEGA 50/50, I’ll be playing all the great music you grew up with on “The Hot Rod Show” and we have plenty of giveaways!
My favorite band during the week long event is the Tip Tops, a 10-piece group from Mobile, Alabama that puts on a free show after the Monday kickoff parade in Long Beach. The parade ends up at the harbor and the Tip Tops light up the night with the sounds of Motown. I guess the Tip Tops have played every year on Monday night. Free bands are playing at the venues Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the day. I also enjoy Na Na Sha and my granddaughter loves Vince Vance and the Valiants. Whether you grew up in the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s it is a very special time on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The funny thing about the event is… whether you’re in Biloxi, Bay St. Louis, D’Iberville or Ocean Springs, you’ll think all the cars are ALL at that one location. It’s that darn big! There are great activities to do every day. My brother Ken had rotator cuff surgery on the 17th of September. He shared a funny story. His right arm was laying on his
chest prior to the procedure. The doctors gave him a nerve block, local anesthesia and something to make him comfortable. He was in la la land, but awake. He looks down to his chest where his brain told him his arm was and it wasn’t there. For a split second he thought, “oh no… must have been worse than the doctor thought… they’ve taken my arm off.” Ken then looks over and they have his limp arm out to the side working on the shoulder, but his brain is still telling him his arm is on his chest. He said when the doctors were all done; he asked if they could put his arm back on his chest where his brain still thinks the arm is. It was hilarious; I wish you could have heard him talk about it under the power of the pain pills, it was some funny stuff. The Hot Rod is a very special time machine. Open up that garage, get that Hot Rod out, plug in the music of your teenage years and enjoy that 17 FOREVER…Hot Rod state of mind!

Fellow Street Rodders: The Mississippi Street Rod Association is proud to announce that the 35th annual edition of Dixie Run will be held March 22-24, 2013. Dixie Run 35 is a pre'49, street rod only event. Once again, the Mississippi Street Rod Association is bucking the trend and keeping it “Old School”. We're street rodders, and are keeping the Dixie Run tradition alive as a pre-'49 street rod only event for our fellow street rodders. Car Shows are nice, and there are plenty of good ones around, but you can't beat an old fashioned pre-'49 three day ROD RUN !! The new and exciting location debuted last year in Pearl, Ms., just across the river on the east side of Jackson and has been selected again for the site of the premier, oldest street rod event in Mississippi. The City of Pearl has enthusiastically welcomed MSRA and Dixie Run last year. They put their efforts into establishing a new home for Dixie Run which should carry it well into the future. As a result, MSRA and Pearl's city officials have joined with the new Holiday Inn Hotel and Trustmark Park, home of the Mississippi Braves baseball club, to again host the 2013 street rod spectacular. Last year, 163 Street Rods from eight states attended, and they all said they'd be back and bring someone with them. Area attractions include the Bass Pro Shop next door and a huge Sam's Club store just down the street. Restaurants of every description are within two blocks of the hotel. There is a very nice restaurant in the hotel lobby which will be serving a breakfast buffet every day, but if you choose to drive, you will find Ryan's, Logan's Roadhouse, Cracker Barrel, O'Charley's, Los Parillos, El Charro, Shoney's, Waffle House, plus all the fast food regulars, within blocks of the hotel. A huge new outlet mall has begun construction next door to the Holiday Inn. When completed, this new mall will have over 100 outlet stores, most of which will be unique name brand stores not previously available in central Mississippi. Some may possibly be open by Dixie Run time in March, but this new mall will definitely be an exciting place to shop in future years while attending Dixie Run. Dixie Run kicks off Friday, March 22 with registration at the Holiday Inn beginning at 2 p.m. Then at 6 p.m. across the street at Trustmark Park Stadium, there will be a BBQ supper for early arriving entrants. The best BBQ beef, chicken and sausage you ever ate will be cooked up on our grille on site. MSRA club members will be serving you a full barbeque meal with beans, chips, desserts and drinks. Bring your lawn chair or sit in the spacious stadium. On Saturday, March 23, registration continues at 8 a.m. Across the street games will begin in the stadium paring lot. With the added space the stadium parking lot provides, we will be able to have some driving games, similar to the ones we used to have “ back in the day” at the old Holiday Inn location in Jackson.

Another very popular feature returning this year will be the big swap meet with all sorts of street rod items, from parts to complete cars on hand, on the north end of the stadium parking lot. Last year's swap meet was the largest ever held at Dixie Run with vendors from all over the south. At 1 p.m. across the street back at the Hotel, the popular ladies tea will be held. We'll even shuttle you across the street if you'd like. Ladies, come to the tea wearing your favorite big hat and join the girls fun. Other games and activities will go on throughout the day in the stadium parking lot. Registration packets will contain “Dixie Dollars.” Plus, each time you play a game, you will be given additional “Dixie Dollars” play money. This money can be used to bid on door prizes at an auction Saturday night in the ballroom of the hotel (another thing we used to do in years past). Sunday morning, March 24, weather permitting, we'll have a devotional service and give out awards outdoors across the street at the stadium. The top ten rods and rodder's choice will receive trophies at this time. Having this outdoors will let us drive the winning cars past for all to see as the awards are handed out. Then the drawing for the grand prize, a new 350 Chevy crate motor will be held. You must be present with your street rod to win. If it rains, we'll give out awards and grand prizes in the Hotel ballroom. Directions to Dixie Run: Coming from Jackson on I 20, take exit 47B to Flowood, then east on 80 to first left on Bass Pro Drive. Coming form the east, take exit 48, then north to Riverwind Drive, turn west and follow Riverwind to the Holiday Inn at Trustmark Park. So make your plans now to come join us. For room reservations, Call the Holiday Inn at 601 939-5238 as listed on the attached flyer. Be sure to mention the code “car show” to get into the block of rooms reserved at the $85 rate. Make your reservations prior to March 2, please. When the Holiday Inn is full, reservations at the same rate will be available at the Hilton Garden Inn next door. Contact them at 601 933-1174. We at MSRA are very excited about the second year of this “new look” to an old event. Last year's event, with its record crowd, beautiful weather and a weekend of street rod fun will be hard to top in 2013. But it is the goal and intent of our club to make this year's event just as successful. It is our promise to make this a most enjoyable reunion with all our street rod “FAMILY” and friends from throughout the south. Come join us for a fun, memorable, unique weekend of street rod fun! Be sure to check out photos and videos from last year's Dixie Run on our website: www.ms-sra.org. Also on our website is a downloadable entry blank. See y'all at Dixie Run 35 !!! The 16-mile route is the perfect place to pull up a lawn chair and watch all kinds of cars, from hot rods to hopped-up hearses, go rumbling by.
The Dream Cruise draws approximately one million people and more than 40,000 vehicles — a seemingly unending procession of self-expression.
Woodward Dream Cruise 2012 This annual rolling car show pays homage to American dream machines. Reprint Source: By Tom Wilson of MSN Autos Photo Credit: Marc Urbano If fat-fendered cars make your rockin’ world go ‘round, then the Woodward Dream Cruise is your sort of party. The largest one-day automotive event on the planet, Woodward is all about real people and real cars driving on a real road. So what brings an estimated one million people and more than 40,000 cars to Detroit? Six lanes of urban boulevard, packed for almost the entire 16-mile cruise with everything from classic antiques to modern muscle cars and everything in between. Once a street-racing haven and always a cruising scene, Woodward Avenue runs straight through the Detroit suburbs and into the heart of American car culture. This is a populist affair. Since the scenery isn’t anything special, the endless parking lots and grass verges are perfect for plopping down a couple of beach chairs and watching the chrome go rumbling by. Started in 1995 as a fund-raiser for a local soccer field, the Woodward Dream Cruise has built on what’s been driving up and down Woodward for decades, mainly muscle cars. Fans of the American V8 are the mainstay of Woodward, and the thunder of eight big pots and a lumpy cam is the real soundtrack of the show. These days at Woodward every angle of the automotive hobby is represented. Cruisers, racers, lowriders, military vehicles, street rods, antiques, Class 8 tractors — they’re all on Woodward. But mainly it’s red, white and blue, 4-speeds and twice pipes. There’s no charge and the cruise officially runs on the third Saturday in August from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. In reality, there is so much action that Woodward actually runs for several days heading into Saturday. With the crowds out for the weekend’s main event, some veteran Woodward watchers have taken a preference to Friday night — the scene is just as intense. The more adventurous can mix right in, there isn’t a barricade in sight and Woodward Avenue remains open to all traffic. These days at Woodward every angle of the automotive hobby is represented. While free-form cruising is why people plan vacations around Woodward, there are numerous organized displays and activities. It is Motown, after all, and the major carmakers set up extensive displays of their show and project cars. Typically these are so large that each manufacturer needs multiple displays along the route. Food and drink are plentiful, along with plenty of cruisin' rock and roll. It's a candy-apple family scene. With this much horsepower running loose, a bit of right-foot expression is bound to break out. In years past more enterprising spectators would sling buckets of water, the better to facilitate massive, smoky burnouts. Today an all-hands police presence, along with a volunteer radio net, keeps tire squeals to a gentle roar. No one can begin to see all of the Dream Cruise because of its multi-mile scale. That didn't stop us from trying, so hang an elbow out the window and cruise through the galleries, while a zephyr of warm night air and rockin' radio tunes carries you down the boulevard. Fat fenders, flames, massive blowers and wide slicks — the stuff of a true Woodward cruiser.
Woodward is not just custom cars — even the vehicles of pristine purists have their moments in the sun.
There's something for everybody on Woodward, from practically every automotive era, including the 1970s Ford Gran Torino of "Starsky & Hutch" fame.
American automakers have static displays along the route, showing off so many cars they often have multiple locations.

By: Steve Kanter Summers almost over, the kids are back in school, and the biggest question is; what did you do on your summer vacation? It's a question that kids ask for weeks. Well, what did you do on your summer vacation? Me, I went to the Bonneville Salt Flats, for Speed Week, and was a crew member on a car that held a world record in C Modified Roadster at over 240mph! For over thirty years I have wanted to go to Bonneville during Speed Week. The allure of racing on salt, and the fascination of speed, is what has always drawn me to Bonneville. To be able to drive 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 mph or faster for 3, 4, or 5 miles is exciting to me. But, the Air Force, work, family and other responsibilities always came first. This year I went, and I just returned from the Bonneville Salt Flats, and it was great! Mike Redinger has been talking about salt racing for a couple of years now (he's been there), and every time he would mention it, I would think to myself “I have got to go”. A Bonneville car is different than most other race cars, because where you try to make a drag car, Indy car, street car, etc as light as possible; on a Bonneville car, weight is not a real concern. As a matter of fact, you add weight! When Boogie Scott set the record several years ago in C Modified Roadster, he added about 1,500 pounds of extra weight to his car! As Boogie tells it, “the more weight I added, the faster I went.” Bonneville is probably the last vestige of old school racing, where everybody helps everybody, and where inventiveness, creativity, and engineering, create some of the most interesting and strangest vehicles that have ever spun a wheel. How about a twin overhead cam Model “A” b engine, that did 138mph! Or a Chevrolet 350ci engine that has been cut in half length wise, for a displacement of 175ci, that has run over 200mph! Or a supercharged flathead v8 that has run over 220mph! Or how about a “32 roadster powered by a 450hp 1300cc Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle engine that broke the H/STR class record running 168mph! Or a twin turbo LS Chevrolet engine that has gone over 426mph! or how about an electric bar stool (electric cart) that set a record at over 45mph! The cars are fascinating to look at, and the people are very interesting to listen to as they tell you about their successes and losses. Mr. Johanson (he built the twin overhead cam b engine) Mr. Johanson with his twin overhead has been to every Bonneville Speed Week since 1949. He cam b engine roadster. My foot on the sticky cool salt.

missed the first one because his boss wouldn't let him take time off from work. The Bean Bandits have built several cars, with their most recent being the one where they cut the Chevrolet engine in half, lengthwise, because their philosophy is “we do it the hard way.” George Poteet, the fastest man on earth, driving a piston powered, wheel driven vehicle, the Speed Demon. Their goal? 500mph! Then there is the family who lost one of their sons to the salts. The car rolled end over end many times, at over 250mph with such violence, that the rear end was actually slung from the car (pictures show it to be about twenty feet in the air. The body, engine parts, front suspension, and other parts were scattered along a two mile stretch of the track. There was nothing left of the car. That was three years ago, the father and other son have no plans to build another car or race one, but they return every year to Bonneville, and work tech.
Mike Cook’s
I worked tech for a day, which was arranged by Lee Kennedy, Car Technical Committee Chairman, for the SCTA. Wow, it's amazing what or who you see going through tech. Mike Cook came through tech, very friendly, real talkative, got along great with the tech inspectors, and passed inspection. It wasn't until later that I discovered that he is the son of Doug Cook, who, along with two others, campaigned a race car in the sixties; Stone, Woods and Cook, perhaps you've heard of them. A real nice sixties style Indy race car came through tech, it was beautiful, incredible detail. The paint, markings, wheels, all said Indy 500. Even the drivers name on the car; Roger Ward, was done as I remembered it. I saw this car race at Indy. I was less than two feet from this car and driver, inspecting it, even said high to the driver. On the way out, the other inspector said “good luck Roger”, the driver said “thanks, you too”. I asked the other inspector if that was Roger Ward the Indy 500 racer, and he said “it's his son, been coming here for years”. Wow! The rest of the day was great. Saw some more famous people, and not so famous people, but everyone had a story and a vehicle to race. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles, they all race at Bonneville. Now for the rest of the story. In January I was lucky enough to become a crew member of Bucket List Racing, a team owned by Dan Tacket. He's building a 1954 Corvette called Silver Bullet to race at Bonneville and other high speed tracks. The work on the Corvette was proceeding at an acceptable pace, but the more we did, the more we realized that there was more to do, and had to be done. It became apparent to us in June that we would "Silver Bullet" not be able to finish the car to the Dan's car under construction.
standards we were striving for in time for this year's (2012) Speed Week. About May of this year, a friend of ours, Boogie Scott, concluded that he would not be able to finish his new engine in time for this year's Speed Week. Dan just happened to have a newly built small block Chevrolet sitting on an engine stand, which he loaned to Boogie. Our crew, joined with Boogie, and we all went to Bonneville. But first we had to put the car together, and we did. Boogie and his girlfriend Shirley drove to Bonneville, while Dan and I flew, and arrived late Saturday afternoon. On Sunday I worked tech, learned a lot, saw a lot, and was in awe at all the cars, trucks, and motorcycles Incredible machines, each and every one of them. Dan and I also attended the rookie class, where we learned a great deal. Monday morning we prepped the car so Boogie could make a shakedown run to make sure the car was running well, and Dan's engine Boogie's car would hold up. Boogie's run went two weeks before Bonneville. very well, clocking over 201mph on the big course. Upon his return, he gave the thumbs up, and said the
there), for Dan to make his run. The starter signals him to go, the car sounded great, but when he shifted in to second, it just didn't sound right. Over the PA system I hear, “car 564 138mph, pulled chute at two miles”. We zoomed to the return road to get the car, and when we got there, Dan told us that the car lost power when he shifted into second gear. We thought it might need new plugs. Once at the pits, after the hood was removed, we found salt clogging the secondary jets, and cleaned them out. We also found a brake problem, which we fixed. Too late for another Boogie giving Dan some driving run, the car was prepped for suggestions prior to his run. Wednesday morning. Wednesday morning with the car prepped, we tow it again to track #1, where Dan ran over 201mph, and secured his “A” license (which allows him to run as fast as 250mph).
Boogie's cars. Race car on the right, street car on the left. Both hand built by Boogie.
car was running great. Boogie has been going to Bonneville for about fifteen years, and is a member of the very prestigious 200mph club! The race car is owned by Boogie Scott and his partner Ed Pender, built and driven by Boogie (for those not familiar with Boogie, Google him and see what he's done). He is a very accomplished automobile craftsman. He can design, build, weld, hand form aluminum, use a lathe, and make any tool or gadget he needs. Some of the fastest cars in the racing community have used his frames and chassis, his suspensions, or both. His specialty is drag racing and salt racing. With Boogie's approval on the car, he said “let's get Dan licensed”. Monday, with the car prepped for Dan's rookie run, off he went, clocking a 139 mph run, which was perfect. Then we prepped the car again, so Dan could make another run on the short track, to qualify for running on the long track, which he did, by clocking 195 mph at the two and a quarter mile marker. Now we go to the long track. The car was running so well, it made our job easy. All we had to do was repack the chute, check the oil and gas, and go racing. Back to the pits to prep the car again for Dan's first run on the long track. We finished prepping the car, and realized that it was getting late and decided that Tuesday morning we would make the run. Tuesday morning we tow the car to long track #1 (our first time
Dan, at Bonneville, waiting to run.
We all had a great time! Boogie worked hard teaching us about what had to be done with the car, and also had a chance to relax and visit with friends. Dan got all his SCTA licensing completed, and I got to crew on Boogie's car and help Dan get licensed. Dan and I learned a lot. Next year is my turn to get licensed, can't wait. Every car guy and gal should make it a priority to attend Bonneville Speed Week at least once in their life. Go fast, Be safe.

The Matinee Rocker: By: DD Thunders. Summer is coming to an end and the fall movie releases are coming in fast and furious. Fall is my favorite time of the year to catch a movie. All the kids are back in school and there is no problem getting your favorite seat at your local theater. So here we go, sit back, turn your phone off (or at least kill the volume) open up your snowcaps and...you ever notice, that when your in a movie theater your candy box, soda etc. seems to be amplified to match the movies volume? I’m not sure what decibel the trailers are but it seems to get real quiet every time I'm slamming some starburst or taking a drink out of my bucket of soda. I can’t tell you how many times I've had to wait till a car crashes or a bomb blows up to down my drink or finish my family size Icee! Is it just me? anyway, first movie up for review is Hit and Run. written and directed by Dax Shepard. This action/comedy stars Dax Shepard (currently staring in the tv series parenthood), Kristin Bell, Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold and the other Bridges brother, Beau. Also co-starring Joy Bryant who also stars in the ensemble cast of NBC's Parenthood and Cristin Chenowith. This movie is a modern car chase flick with a P.C. twist to it that makes this action romp a bit different than most muscle car powered car crashing, cop evading, hot girls in trouble movie release. I'm guessing this movie was made with tv money and connections made by having the summer off from your hit tv series. Our main character, played by Dax, is named Charles Bronson. When you go into witness protection you have a list of names to choose from because that is exactly then one I would have picked also! Anyway, its seems Mr. Bronson has a steady girlfriend (Kristin Bell) and is living in a small northern California town while hiding out from his criminal past but really hasn't explained to his current girlfriend who he really is. so desperate to hold on to his controlling, but cute, new girl, he stumbles back into his formal criminal lifestyle and has to hit the road and get out of dodge. Tom Arnold's character is Mr. Bronsons witness protection government connection and is a perfect comic foil to the cool and collected hot rod racing snitch who has chosen not to tell his current girl what he really did in his past life. when the past catches up he has to hit the road. good thing he used to be a getaway driver for his bank robbing ex best friend Alex and his former girlfriend Neve (Joy Bryant) who is now his bank robbing ex friends current girlfriend! A nice little plot twist that keeps this road movie rolling right along at a good pace. I really enjoyed the car chase footage. our main character happened to have a completely tricked out Lincoln (suicide doored) continental in the barn and has to put it back on the road to keep from being caught, and maybe ....I can’t give to much plot away. Lets just say, he has a certain set of skills that come in handy when you have to run from the law, bad guys and crazy ex girlfriend. We have all been there before, right guys! The only thing I didn't love about the plot was how much Charles Bronson Jr. had to change just to hold on to a girl who's granola coast lifestyle forced him to play down his natural male.......I'm just saying, Steve McQueen would not have put up with that! I miss Steve McQueen. This movie was a bunch of fun and I hope Dax keeps writing and directing. I like his style. I will give this road racing movie 7 out of 10 picks! Next up is a drama titled The Words. Directed by Brian Klugman/Lee Sternthal and written by Brian Klugman/Lee Sternthal stars Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quad, Zoe Saldana. I couldn't wait to see this one. The trailers for this film had been running for awhile and the wait was worth it. The plot centers around a struggling writer, Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) and his beautiful wife Dora (Zoe Saldana) who is a loving and patient wife who totally believes in her husbands literary prowess. But her husband has doubts about if he really has what it takes when he finally finishes his master piece only to be told it is good work but cant be published. He takes a job in a publishing house as a mail

runner and slowly dips into depression being fed by all of his friends successful and fulfilling jobs while he struggles to prove himself as the author he thinks he is. But his life goes through big changes when he finally gets a book published and its a literary masterpiece that propels him into a superstar status as today's answer to Ernest Hemmingway! There is only one small detail he left out while enjoying his new found star status. He didn't write this opus. I mean, he didn't have help, no ghost writers etc. He never put pen to paper on this master piece. He happened across the his completed manuscript while thrift shopping. The leather messenger bag that he bought had a forgotten manuscript that was a finished manuscript that was different from anything he had ever written. After reading the story he decides to copy it word for word on his laptop. He was so intoxicated by this completely perfect work of fiction that he just wanted to feel the power of the written words of a true literary genius hoping it would inspire him to greatness. His wife stumbles across this stolen story while seeing it on her husbands laptop. After raving to him how that was what she knew he could achieve he made a deal with the devil and claimed it as his own. He quickly goes to the top of the written word world he has only dreamed of belonging to. After the world has given him fortune and fame, he even gets some of his work published on the coattails of his freshman offering. as time goes by he has settled into his new lifestyle and enjoys all the money and benefits that come with that type of success. That's when this gets real good. He gets confronted by the real author who wants to claim what is rightfully his. Jeremy Irons character is simply called the old man. Well, the old man lays the law down on Rory and slowly tells the true story behind this stolen masterpiece. We find out that this is not fiction but a meticulous and painful manuscript of a simple man who is forced to grow up during a world war that has him living over seas and finding his true love and building a nice life for his new beautiful wife and new child. I won’t talk too much about what happens to the old man but he becomes an author out of necessity when his life is changed forever by a tragic event. What is interesting about this movie's plot is the narration by its main characters. They plot twist and turns through multiple narrations and the three different sub plots that you really have to focus on to follow the true story that weaves its way to a non typical Hollywood ending. I might have to see this one again just to make sure I didn't miss anything. This is a classic fall release drama. I give it 7 out of 10 picks.
Last but not least. The Campaign! A coarse, crazy, crude, comedy that had me laughing outloud which I rarely do in a movie theater. Director Jay Roach, writers Chris Henchy/Shawn Harwell. I won’t talk too much about plot because.....its all about the jokes, low brow, juvenile, and taking the low road makes this comedy one of the best I've seen in a while. I have always thought there is some kind of secret, think tank for top tier comedians. Where they get together when the man makes the call. like a camp David for comics. Maybe, its underground and ......sorry, just so excited about this crazy movie. I would have loved to have been in production/script sessions with Will and the gang! Just watching them come up with one sick joke after another. You know, the kind of jokes that makes you blow milk out of your nose and pee yourself. Which both happened to me simultaneously while I watched the best comedy of the year. What is really funny about this farce is that most of the situations these two candidates running for the U.S. Senate probably happen daily up on Capital Hill. Well, maybe under capital hill but I know this stuff goes down more we would ever want to know about. Thank goodness, there is a comedy think-tank that lets the general public know what really goes down in D.C. Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) is up for re-election. An unopposed, womanizing buffoon who is home free till a crooked corporation brings in a unlikely candidate who they think will be a puppet for their greedy corporate illegal activities. Cam, who is a cross between W Bush, Clinton, George Clinton, and all the peculiar people we seem to keep sending to Washington to run, or ruin, our country. Marty Huggins (Zack Galifianakis) is put on the ticket to take Cam off the government gravy train. Both candidates have a skillful campaign managers that try to spin some of the most disgusting, inappropriate behavior that leaves me still cracking up. Nothing is new about the low brow humor but its pretty smart stuff. I put this film right up there with Animal House which is still one of the best comedies ever put to film. While this is a comic send up of candidates that aren't real but almost could be goes for the easy laugh is
really well done. I love to watch comic geniuses like Ferrell go for it and come up with gold. Also, these guys are great actors with the chops it takes to turn a ridiculously, unlikeable character on a dime and show some humanity in there character that makes them likeable. If you don't like lowbrow, sophomoric, comedy perfection, don't go see this. If you want to laugh till you tear up, go get some! I'm glad to give this 9 out of 10 pics! Well, let me wrap this months reviews up. There are lots of good movies coming out soon. Don't forget to support your local theaters. see you at the matinee………...DD Thunders

Visiting the NorthEast Classic Car Museum By MCC Member Henri Fusilier When I entered the address of the new account I needed to visit into the GPS, it warned me that the route included unpaved roads. This was up State New York, but unpaved roads to a hospital??? Despite the warning I headed out. I never found the unpaved road but as I entered the town of Norwich I notice a billboard advertising a car museum. With a bit of time to spare I thought, what the heck and started looking for it. The building was your typical metal building but the sign on the front stated that the museum had over 150 antique cars on display. Opening the door the first thing I saw was a large room that had only 2 cars, a pristine 1960 Continental Mark V and an OK model A. I asked the elderly lady at the counter where all the other cars were. “Through that door.” She said pointing over her shoulder. “It’s 9 bucks to see ’em.” I hesitated a moment but my curiosity got the best of me. I opened the door and (cue the heavenly music) before me sat more than 100 cars that looked like they never left the showroom floor! I was stunned. It took me a few moments to gather my wits and step further into the room. All this in a small town in the fingers lakes area of New York, unbelievable. The car to my right was a 1907 Cadillac and to my left was a 1931 Cadillac. What I had stumbled onto was the Northeast Classic Car Museum, originally started from the collection of George Stanley. Stanley got his start as an expert in aircraft carburetors before WWII. He was the man who tuned the fuel injection systems on a B-29 named the Enola Gay. After the war he worked for a company that contracted to overhaul aircraft engines built by Franklin. Franklin also happened to have made a car or two prior to the war. George acquired one in 1962. If you made the garage tour a couple of years ago you got to see 2 of these fine cars at Tyre Automotive. George soon started his own aircraft company and collected more and more Franklin automobiles. However, he didn’t turn away when another car caught his eye either. A very meticulous man, Stanley took his time and restored his cars to the exact detail that they came of the line. Today the museum holds 51 of his cars but Franklins are his favorites. The museum has 28 Franklins, including a 1915 Fire Chief’s car. I counted 12 Packard’s and 12 Cadillac’s. There were also a few Duisenberg’s, Pierce Arrows and Auburn’s. The oldest car I saw was a 1903 Franklin Runabout that had an original price of $1,300.00. The collection has many brass era cars all looking brand new. I imagine there has to be a full time person on staff just to polish all the brass alone! While the main focus on the museum is pre-war, there are some fine examples of other cars the newest being an AMC Gremlin. There is also some very rare cars. Of note are a 1929 Duisenberg and a 1920 Mora. Each was only 1 of 2 made and the other Duisenberg has rusted away in a farmer’s field. A 1932 Sprint racing car also caught my eye. What was amazing about this car was the fact that the driver straddled the exposed drive shaft! Another of my all-time favorite cars was there, a 1937 Cord. The late Charlie Webster of Madison had one that was as nice as the one I saw at the museum. One of the things I enjoyed the most was the hood ornaments. Man those thing sure added class and style to a car. With so many pre-war cars there are a lot to enjoy. OK car experts, can you tell what brands these were from? by: Lynn Makua WELCOME CRUISERS !!!!!! I normally start my bar & restaurant review doing just that, “locally”! However, this month we have about 6000 cruisers in town and for the ones that are here for first time, we suggest the following: (Also for repeat cruisers) Gulfport as you go north (from the beach) on Hi Way 49, you will see 2 Waffle Houses on the left that are open 24 hours. Then a few miles up (maybe 2) on your right is “Nates” Club that opens at 11 a.m., huge parking lot, (your customs will be safe) and you can see them thru the front glass as you eat or drink. ---- Cruisers lunch specials from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cruisers happy hour 2 for 1 draft & well 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. Mention you are cruisers so you get the discount. This is for where lots of locals hang out. Nate's sets back in (due to large parking lot) and you will see a large sign “TAN” just before you get there on the right. They have a great menu and the bartenders and food servers are very friendly. Enjoy!!! If you out of town cruisers want to go to a local bar like back home. You must stop at The Tiffin Room Lounge on 34th St. in Gulfport. It's my favorite local bar in Gulfport. They open at 9 a.m. Jan is the owner and Kim is day bartender Mon-Thursday & Thelma Fri-Sun. All the locals know everything that's going on in town! Just ask them! They also watch Nascar, Football Etc. My - - we can finally quit holding our breath! Hurricane Isaac is finally gone! We boarded up and stayed inside. We had no water for 3 days, but we had power and direct TV. Can you believe it! We never lost our dish that's on the corner of the house. We had 80 miles an hour winds and very heavy rain! We almost lost part of our roof on our dock. I call it my dock because after we lost our house in Katrina, we bought a 3bdrm 2 bath double wide mobile (38 x 28) and I decided I wanted a porch. So Larry (Pineapple's Husband as Debbie of Anita's says) built a “Dock” (400 sq. ft.) every 4 ft there is a 4” x 4” sunk in concrete, roof is plastic corrugated (white looks like steel but is real light and doesn't attract lighting like steel does. The entire “Dock” is fastened to the double wide and it handled Isaac with no problem (except noise). Larry built it all by his self. He was so proud! The day before the Hurricane I decided to stock up because we going to ride out the Hurricane. (never again) My first stop was Waveland Discount Wine & Liquor 457 Hwy 90 in Waveland. Vincent runs it 6 days a week and they have the best prices and they know what they are doing. Then I knew I had to get some food. Beas, who hangs out at the VFW In Bay St Louis told me Wal-Mart was running out so I went to the new grocery store Save A Lot on 90 (next to Larry's favorite auto parts store Auto Zone). They had everything I needed chips, dip, bread and turkey. So much about the Hurricane. Lets talk Hawaii: For all you out of town cruisers I am from Hawaii and love to tell my readers about Hawaii. I write how it used to be. So, check the picture of Deborah Kerr in the 50's as she goes for an outrigger canoe ride with Steamboat Mokuahi. Steamboat was a very good friend of my Uncle

Blue. Check Blues picture out. These guys were old time beach boys. They were all fabulous watermen. Uncle Blue Sr. could swim after fish in the water - and catch'em. And Steamboat could stay in the water for eight hours. It was said that he could swim from Waikiki to Moloki. All the beach boys had terrific ability to hold their breath. Blue could stay down three or four minutes, at least. Steamboat had what is commonly referred to as “squid eye”, the ability while diving to look at a coral reef and know which holes contain squid. Blue was said to have great anticipation, great feel. He could make a canoe slide through the surf like an eel. Steamboat had a great strength. His chest was said-to-be as big around as a “beer keg” his canoe rides “as smooth as a Cadillac. So much for two of my favorite beach boys. Back to Mississippi: It's Saturday morning and since I have no spam, rice or eggs, I decided to take you know who out to breakfast. We hop into Precious (300ZX Nisssan) which is no easy task for Larry, and head for Dempsey's in the Kiln. (see their ad) Saturday 7a.m.-10 p.m & Sunday 7a.m-3 p.m. They have a great breakfast. For you out of town cruisers Tuesday thru Thursday - Raw Oysters- Chard Boiled or Rockefellers - South of the Border. It is a nice drive to the Kiln. Now it's Sunday around 11 a.m. and you know who wants to stay home and watch NASCAR. So, I get into Precious turn on my Hawaiian tape of Don Ho and turn my air on and cruise to El Maguey for lunch on Hi Way 90, Bay St. Louis, Juan Garcia the owner is also a cattle owner, and he serves beef only Angus, or Herford beef in any beef order that they prepare. When you go in, it's spacious, clean, and beautiful! You first receive a basket of chips and a bowl of salsa (before you order). The food is soft, very tasty, but if you like Tex-Mex you just start adding their famous salsa. I had their $5.00 Lunch which was Tamale, Tostada & Rice. I like to eat at the bar, but they have nice soft booths and tables. (See their ad) You cruisers would like this place, big parking lot. Now for you out of town cruisers I decided to go to Old Town Bay St Louis. In this little center they have Sloppy Dog and The Ugly Pirate. They are one block off the beach behind “Trapanis” and “North Beach” restaurants. See their ads . Ugly Pirate is going to be open 11 a.m. during cruiser week. Sloppy Dog has great hot dogs and in their ad they have a coupon, $1.00 off any meal. Since I ate at El Maguey's I saved my coupon and went next door to the Ugly Pirate. They also serve food. Both places have tables outside with umbrellas. I had a great glass of chardonnay with this good looking bartender. So, I had two. They also have great parking. Oh I almost forgot! If you cruisers decide to go to the Silver Slipper and really don't want to eat there. I think you would like Sellier's II. Lakeshore & Lower Bay Rd. They are locally owned and have a great sea food platter. See their ad! I was headed home on Lower Bay Rd and who do I see standing along the road? Mike of the VFW in Bay St. Louis. He had his famous cut off's on and seemed to be waving. I'm sure he was cutting his daughter Lacey's grass with his famous riding mower and ran out of gas! Since he lives across the street, I didn't stop. I was at the VFW (in Bay St. Louis) last Thursday and Starr was on. I don't know what was going on but Starr was in a great mood and had this special book behind the bar. Every time she would read a page, she would smile. She showed it to Mike's wife and she smiled. Then they would laugh. She showed it to Beas and he smiled. It reminded me of the song “What's going on behind the green door”. Bob was in attendance and was talking about his car again! He has ( I think) a 65 Mustang. He said he put dual pipes on his Mustang that we have never seen! Cruisers check out the VFW'S AD for address & phone. The last place I want to tell you about is this little Cuban restaurant. I know nothing about Cuban food. But I was curious. I never see any advertising for it. It is bigger then it looks. Very clean and lots of booths. Open 6 days a week at 833 Hwy 90 in Bay St. Louis. One of the owners was there her name was Nolvia. She said the food is nothing like Mexican food. It is not spicy. Their special is goat (no thanks). (But that is just me). Aloha forever! Watch next month for some of my old and new places! September 15th was the 8th annual Hot Rod Weekend at Gulfport Dragway. This year some of the folks that attended were in for a treat. Ted Mangum gave people a ride down the Dragstrip in his “Little?” Red Wagon. Now that is something that is truly unusual. The Coast Cruizers put on a great event this year and it sure was a family affair. It was great to see the kids take advantage of riding down the track with their mom or dad. Cars, trucks and motorcycles lined up for the drive thru judging and a team of judges marked each vehicles score. Each vehicle was judged on it’s own merit in ten different categories; A. paint & finish, B. body & fenders, C. wheels & tires, D. springs, axles, steering & undercarriage, E. trunk, F. upholstery & interior, G. lamps & brightwork, H. engine & radiator, I. wires, engine accessories, fuel lines, hoses, drive belts, etc., J. workmanship This was a great time to check out the vehicles not only for a possible show award but it served as a safety inspection. Waffle House was on hand to pass out some of their great chili. Vendors were on hand to trade and sell parts. And quite a few spectators showed up to see what was going on at the track. Hot Rod Weekend 9 will be on the Gulfport Dragway schedule for 2013 and the Coast Cruizers hope to see you there. Pictures by: Coast Cruizer - Linda Montgomery
