Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine “You may have been surrounded by people that didn’t support you; instead of telling you what you could become, they told you what you couldn’t do, why you weren’t going to be successful. You didn’t have any choice; it’s how you were raised. The good news is that it doesn’t have to stop you. If you'll put yourself in a different environment—with can do people, with possibility thinking people, with friends that challenge and inspire, with people that push you up—then those seeds will take root, and you will began to blossom. You can still see the fullness of your destiny. Ships don’t sink because there’s water all around them; they sink if they let the water get in them. You may have all kinds of negative circumstances around you. Here’s the key, don’t let that get in you. Rule your spirit. You can’t rule the traffic, the weather, a grouchy boss, a neighbor that’s annoying, but you can rule your spirit. Don’t let people talk you out of what God put in your heart. Don’t let experts convince you that it’s not going to happen. They don’t know what God has put in you. They can’t see the seeds of greatness on the inside. You have the most powerful force in the universe breathing in your direction. God has the final say over your dreams. People may have discouraged you, but what He promised is on the way. God Has the Final Say”. “God will not allow things to happen that won’t somehow move you to your destiny.” … Joel Osteen

Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo Couple of months ago it was cold and wet, and now it’s hot and humid but not as hot as its going to be. Summer will set in and overheating will be the problem that some of us will be facing. Our overheating vehicles are not the only problem the heat will affect, some of us may feel our body overheating. What should we do to help prevent overheating? Have you ever experienced heat stroke? Maybe you had some of the symptoms like: nausea, headache, dizziness or vertigo, fatigue, hot, flushed, dry skin, rapid heart rate, dry skin, or profound sweating. Maybe you did't get all of these but if you feel any of them you need to take action before you become confused. As you get hotter and feel as if you need to sit or lay down it’s the body's way of telling you to take a break. Be ready!! Have some cool water or low sugar electrolyte drinks with you to help hydrate you. Staying hydrated is essential, so avoid soda and other sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine. These can increase your
body temperature and dehydrate you. Get to a cool area, like a car A/C or a fan. Even moving into the shade helps. Just like you would check where the exit doors are inside a strange building or keeping an eye out for road hazards while you are driving, you NEED TO MAKE PLANS for overheating. I know, it’s not ever going to happen to you BUT…. be prepared not only for you but ready to help someone else. Keep the cooler in your vehicle.. On the cover this month is Danny Lopezs’ “Captain America” gasser always a crowd favorite. This 1956 Olds Rocket Sedan is powered by a 455 cu inch Olds, Turbo 400, with 456 gears and weighs in at 3,140 pounds. Danny will be at the Gulf Coast Vintage Dragrace Championship at Gulfport Dragway the weekend of September 6 & 7. Christmas is still six months away but George Trosley designed a North Pole Rod Run T-shirt for us. This shirt is a kool T-shirt for the up coming Christmas dinner parties or toy runs. as the orders come in so there isn’t going to be a mass printing of these. We even have a web site www.NorthPoleRodRun.com where you could get more information about toy runs and events as well. Okay time for some e-mail and finish up the this issue‌. TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN; YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE, SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS Jimbo, THE BACK 9. You know .. Time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is.. The back nine of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that I was only on the first hole and the back nine was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change....Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant..but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore.. it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will.. I just fall asleep where I sit! And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for

all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though I'm on the back nine, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth I will have left a small MARK ? Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime. So, if you're not on the back nine yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you're on the back nine or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life....so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! "Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. CONSIDER THIS: ~Your kids are becoming you......but your grandchildren are perfect! ~Going out is good.. Coming home is better! ~You forget names.... But it's OK because some people forgot they even knew you!!! ~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything like golf. ~The things you used to care to do, you aren't as interested in anymore, but you really don't care that you aren't as interested. ~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV 'ON' than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep". ~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON"

and "OFF" switch.. ~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... ??? ~What used to be freckles are now liver spots. ~Everybody whispers. ~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear. ~~~But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS!! By Beth Rayann Corder | Ron Corder Customs Hot Rod builds start from the ground up, with a great foundationthe chassis. It can have a powerful motor, stylish wheels, and a perfect patina but if the chassis design is inadequate it will affect the stance and performance. Everything rides on the chassis, and, although it is mostly out of sight, it carries a great responsibility in the hot rod build. Sounds a lot like our lives, doesn't it? Without a good foundation, our lives get out of alignment, veer off course, ride rough and just don't sit right. That is why it is so important to take time to evaluate what our lives (or hot rod in this case) are sitting and riding on. Many meticulous hours are spent designing a chassis so that everything will fit together smoothly and give the car the preferred look and ride. That is exactly what the Campground Baptist Church, “Rumble at the Camp” hot rod crew is working on. They are designing and building the chassis for the 1923 T-Bucket that will be given away at their October 5th cruise event. The crew is working on a unique frame and has given the 2”x 6” eleven-gauge steel a work-over to create some swoopy frame rails. The front suspension is a tricky butterfly mono-leaf concealed inside the front x-member which is creating a transverse-quartered hybrid suspension component with adjustable ride height. The front axle is a 5” dropped I-beam from Speedway Motors with split wishbones to keep it in place. They are almost ready to mock-up the wheel base, which will include painted steel wheels, wide whitewall tires and V-8 hubcaps, all of which are from Coker Tire. Follow this hot rod project on the Rumble at the Camp Facebook page and, if you'd like help redesigning or rebuilding your life's foundation, cruise in to Campground Baptist Church and visit with other gearheads like you. You and your hot rods are welcomed. Keep them rolling & rumbling!

Everyone tells a white lie on occasion, it’s just a question of why. Some white lies save relationships, some ease a hectic situation, and others buy us time. The list could go on forever. Stretching the truth is a natural component of human instinct because it’s the easy way out. We all do it, so there is no reason to deny it. Honestly, I think the world is probably a better place because of our white lies. As long as we aren’t hurting others or breaking the law, these innocent lies can make life more pleasant. They can absorb potential friction between our varying personalities and vacillating moods as we nudge into one another on the quest through our daily routine. Most of these white lies only stretch an interpretation of what the truth actually is anyways. Given our rigid optimism to each lead a tailored ideal life, white lies simply cushion us from ourselves. Here’s my list of the 15 most common white lies and why we tell them: It wasn’t me! – Because some things just aren’t worth taking credit for. The table will be ready in 5 minutes. – Because it sounds a lot better than 15 minutes. Oh, yeah. That makes sense. – Because option B involves admitting that I am clueless. Thank you so much! I just love it! – Because telling someone that their gift sucked would make me look like an insensitive jerk. Yeah, you look great in that dress. – Because it’s better than being slapped. Oh, things would have been different if I was there! – Because I’m Superman and I can always make a difference… or at least that’s how I want others to perceive of me. No, officer… I have no idea how fast I was going. – Because claiming ignorance is sometimes better than admitting to insubordination. I’m 29. – Because 29 is like 20 years younger than 30. Yeah, I’ll start working on that ASAP! – Because telling you I have 10 things to do first would just irritate you. Yes, John was with me last night. – Because that’s what friends do… we agree and ask questions later. My resume is 5 pages long for a good reason. – Because I’m darn good at bullshittin’! Man, that sucker was 10 feet long! – Because anything less would be boring. Yeah, I was a badass on my high school football team! – Because I want to be seen by others in an even stronger light than I see myself. I’m 21, 6’5, with a muscular build. – Because you can’t see me in this online chat room… ha ha! I thought I already sent that email out. I’m sure I did. – Because telling you that it was a low priority and I forgot would probably hurt our relationship.

By: Joyce Lachaussee June's Lucedale Hardee's breakfast cruise saw a really large turnout. A first time visit was made by Pat Copeland in this 1940 Willys. This is an awesome restoration that has taken 15 years to get to this stage. Pat said his Willys has an Outlaw body with a 565 big block Chevy, an 871 blower and a turbo 400 with gear vender overdrive. This big block generates around 1200 HP. Pat removed the cold air! (?) The paint job was done by Metal Brothers of Theodore, AL and the interior was compliments of Interior by Shannon of northern Alabama. Pat has owned a '39 2 door Ford sedan and a '23 T Model Roadster. He and his wife, Kathy, own the largest "pet motel" in the south. He's also in the refrigeration business. Pat gives his wife credit as the sponsor for this build. All I can say is she must really like him!
Jody and Kelli Fogle of Lucedale brought one of my favorite cars to the breakfast. It's this '51 Ford, fondly nicknamed the 'shoebox'. This little honey has the original 239 V8 flathead. Jody found it in South Carolina. The electrical system is still 6 volt and he plans on leaving it that way. It's refreshing to see someone in the younger generation that likes stock! However, Kelli prefers the more modern collectibles, like the muscle cars. Looks like the next addition to their garage will be a Charger, Camaro or maybe a Mustang. Seems they are starting the car collecting hobby (better known as a disease) pretty early for their granddaughter. Thanks for sharing your new ride.
Wes Brannon of Mobile was also a first time visitor with this '70 Nova. I asked Wes if he had done the restoration - he said no but that he could. The only problem with him doing it was he was too old and it would take too long. He has been fooling with cars since he was a kid helping his Dad. Wes' Nova had a total restoration by Metal Brothers of Theodore, Al, and it has an LS3 engine. Wes said he may come next month and bring his truck with some seats he wants to sell in the Swap Meet. Come check out the items different people bring each month to sell.
Thanks to all who came to the Cruise-in. There was a great turn out from several car clubs including Magnolia Cruisers, Grand Bay Cruzers and the Red Creek Cruisers of Wiggins. We welcome everyone with or without a car.

I think the line “the best laid plans of mice and men…..”. Quite possibly written by Rudyard Kipling, definitely nailed it. I had planned to be deep into working on the Big Truck doors by now. Ha! so much for my plan. I am still in the process of working on the hood. Partly my fault and partly the effects of staying too busy with volunteering and fixing other things and taking care of others problems. I have missed many cruise nights and great shows for much the same reason. Not that I did not wish to support those causes its just that life many times get in the way. I am sure many of you have suffered these same fates. The upside to this work on the hood should reflect the effort involved to eliminate the center strip down the middle of the hood, and the effort it takes to do so is not for the faint of heart. Oh! I know many have done this and can most likely do it in their sleep. Not I Kemosabe as Tonto would say. Also, it seems everything I do I have to do the hard way. I am not real proficient at welding so I rely on my brother, Chase calls him Uncle Bob, his name is Gary, how Bob got in there I still can’t figure it out. I call on Uncle Bob many times to dig me out of my late-night dream schemes. Many time’s he makes my ideas come to pass. Many time’s he just looks and laughs and says we can’t do that, and we try and do it anyway. It sure is great to have a brother that sort of enjoys this stuff I try. I also get stuck with tunnel vision as well. You know, also like the steam roller effect, where nothing seems to be impossible until horrible failure jumps in and smacks you right in the kisser. It happens to all of us I am quite sure at times. Also, I am sure many of us don’t like to admit it. Seems the hard way to learn anything in life as well as working on these old cars and trucks is almost the best way. Just as in life those lessons are usually well remembered and often never repeated, well for some of us anyway. The hood is almost all in primer and the steps to get there was a quite time-consuming process. The blasting the warp repairing by some dear friends due to the blasting. The chemical rust treating, the fixing and repairing of tiny rust holes. The fixing of the many dents, as best I can. It seems someone took a board and hit it, or quite possibly danced on this old hood. The filling the sanding the blocking is almost never ending. And now my finger tips are almost a bloody mess, no and I am not British, I am serious. I knew it would be a tough job when I started it and thus far this old truck has not proven me wrong. The joys and adventures in working on old junk. However, the payoff will be all worth it if I just endure and see it to fruition. I do dream of that day in the near future. My new goal is to have the hood painted and put on the big truck prior to August. Enough of these ramblings, it is time to wish a Happy 243rd Birthday to these United States, and a sincere prayer for this celebration for generations to come. Have a great 4th of July, or Independence Day, be safe, stay focused, cruise on my friends. Until next month, from the Carriage House, … Gizmo.

This Month was a busy one. We started with a group heading to New Iberia for Cruising Cajun Country. Very nice show with lots of different daily places to visit and hang at and lots of good food. Put it on y’alls list to attend.
Returned from that to hit the cruise in Cafe in the Kiln always a great hangout spot here.

Left the VA show and stopped by Edgewater Mall for the Coast Cruizers Cruise-in. Another nice turnout for this one.
The next morning headed to Waveland for the Annual St. Clare's Seafood Festival/Car show. Another with more great food and they broke their car entry record this year, sure was a parking lot full. That night was the Long Beach Harbor cruise-in. Kinda’ hot evening but still had around 20 rides show up.
Our next cruising weekend had us driving to Poplarville for the Blue Berry Festival. Had fun at this one hanging with friends and walking around looking at the Festival vendors.
We also made all 4 of our Thursday night Silver Slipper cruise nights. Lots of cars, Bikes and jeeps come out weekly for this one. The following Saturday was the Annual Biloxi VA show for the Veterans. This one is a great time to give back to those who gave so much to us. That evening i ran down to Waveland for the Misfits cruise-in on Hwy 90 at Choctaw Plaza.
This month had 4 of the long 15/18 hr show and cruise-in combination days. But a whole bunch of us did them supporting our friends causes. See y'all somewhere or everywhere. Remember to watch for our friends out riding their bikes also. ‌ Allen

Car collectors have great imaginations and in some cases, go all out to recreate the history of their cars. Johnny Jones fully restored the 1963 Rambler and for Christmas his wife helped with the car hop accessories and luggage.
From the DAILY IBERIAN
Autos as old as 85 years to new gather in New Iberia for Cruisin’ Cajun Country By Vicky Branton - May 19, 2019 The breeze in Bouligny Plaza was a perfect complement to a glorious spring day as collectors gathered to show off their cars, trucks and created machines. There was no competition, except the Poker Run that awarded best and worst hands collected at the stops along the highway ride. The sole purpose of the event was to bring in people who share a hobby together for a good time. Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida residents made the 2019 trip for the 11th annual Cruisin Cajun Country three-day event. There’s no better place for driving than the surrounding beauty of Iberia, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion Parishes. The proceeds raised through the club events are given to more than 12 charities in the area, said Johnny Bourque, president of the car club. Last year the group gave away more than $12,000. There were 179 vehicles on tour in Acadiana this weekend. One owner from Longview, Texas, Hewitt Wheless, said about the New Iberia host club Cruisin’ Cajuns, “These people have what I call sunshine in my heart.” The club has raised money to give away four special handicapped tricycles. Two were given this weekend working through a physical/occupational therapist in Lafayette. AMBUCS developed and now provides custom equipment to all ages for mobility challenged people. Seeing the vehicles on the roads of the Teche Area, at the Ramada Inn host hotel or on show at collecting spots like J.P. Thibodeaux on the U.S. 90 Frontage Road and Bouligny Plaza is one more way the hospitality of south Louisiana is bringing an economic boost through tourism into the communities along the Bayou Teche.

The Cruisin Cajun Car Club loves to give back. This sweet girl was able to ride a bike for the first time thanks to the many sponsors and participants of Cruisin Cajun Country 2019. Due to physical limitations, this five year old would never be able to ride a bike. Many thanks to Amtryke for making these specialized bikes for children and adults with limited mobility. Amtryke and the AMBUCS clubs, make bikes for those in need. Cruisin Cajun Country Car Club was able to purchase three bikes and give them to local children. Go to ambucs.org to find out more.

inally! The constant rain broke, and Texoma Cars & Coffee was on! There classics lined along both sides of Main Street with Jeep Wranglers and more spilling into a neighboring parking lot. The sidewalks were crowded as everyone tried to get a look at their favourite ride and to participate in the raffle (Thank you O’Reilly’s of Whitesboro for providing the prizes!) The Fort Worth Air Coolers VW Gang was out in force and I was able to talk to two members, Eric Ebersole and Matt Folbre about their love of VWs. “It's like heroin, you just can't kick it. I still have my very first one that I bought in high school in 85. I built it, drove it every day up until 2001-2002. And then I put it away as I was spending more time racing and so I started driving the truck... that totes the racecar trailer, so it just kind of set neglected in the shop. Now it's going to get a complete pan-off restoration again,” said Matthew Folbre of Matt’s Performance Aircooled out of Bedford, Texas. “I've been living with them since 1969. There's been a Volkswagen in my life since I was nine years old. So, it's just something I learned growing up. Dad would buy a car for 50 bucks and we'd spend two weekends working on it and drive it for eight or ten years and until the floor pans fell out of it or something major wrong with it and we get rid of it and get another one,” said Eric Ebersole. “My Dad's first was a 70 bus, brand new. Then he bought a 62 Deluxe, but not a 23 window -- it was a nonreg Deluxe. And just throughout the years we've acquired Volkswagens type threes and into the radiators and back out of the radiators and back into the air cooled. Just something about them, you just can't get away from them once you're into it. Just you gotta stay with them. Just something gets in your blood.” Eric’s car is the, “…73 Thing. I've had it going on five years now. It's, in my opinion, it's all original except for a little bit of damage that's been accomplished to the right front. Picked it up with no engine in it and took one off the shelf that came out of my old 73 that was in my daughter's 74 and we had it up and running in about three days. My first excursion with it was from Fort Worth to Glen Rose, not knowing anything about what I was going to get into. But I've always wanted one. A buddy of mine, Steve, who didn't make it today, he found it and captured it and then I bought it from him and added it to my fleet.” “From a standpoint, as I say, it's about 80% original paint. I never thought I'd ever acquire one that was affordable and this one happened to come about. And I grabbed it, I grabbed it up. They're one of those... They're ugly. They're so ugly, they're cute. I just I just like them. Sam had it almost five years and I was the first one in the Fort Worth area that showed up with one and then, lo and behold, within the next two years they sprung up like, you know, Honda Accords,” said Eric, whose fleet includes, “… a 68, single cab. It's in the process of being refurbed for the last 24 years. I've got a 73 standard Beetle that's a drag car. Got a 74 standard Beetle. That's what needs to be put back together. This 73 Thing and I also have a 74 Thing.” June 8, 2019 By: ChandaElaine

“I go everywhere with it. This has gone to Austin twice -- on its own, not on a trailer. Been down to Harvest in Austin. We try to hit as many shows as we can. You know Aimee's (Aimee Freise of the Fort Worth Air Coolers VW Gang) invited us up here several times the weather just hasn't been good enough to come up and I just decided it didn't matter, I'm coming up anyway. We went to the Shriner's Shriner Show over in Sherman last year. Came up in a rainstorm. Doesn't matter. Go anywhere,” said Eric. “It's fun to drive. It's noisy. It rattles. It stinks. And you know what? I just enjoy it. I just love it.” Matthew’s car, “It's a 63. Believe or not, it's painted to look like this. Body came off the pan. Full pan restoration; new pans, new interior. It's a cut narrow beam with drop spindles, sitting on BRMs. The headlights, everybody notices they look different, because they're made by Lucas Rossi out of England. The engine is still a 40 horse which is 1200 cc for 63 Volkswagen, but it's been punched out a little bit on the bore -- Porsche carbs, big valve heads, port polish custom exhaust…The 63s are considered a small window car and the fact that, if you look at the door glass, the quarter glass, and the windshield, they're smaller than, say a 65-66 standard Beetle. And this is the only small window car I've ever kept out of the hundred plus Volkswagens I've owned. So, I built a customer's car and got all done -- it's faded paint on BRMs, and I rolled it out of the shop and was looking at it and I when, "You know what? I kind of got to build one of these and keep it." So, I built this one and kept it to add to my collection. And [it’s been] driven well. Driven everywhere Doesn't see a trailer unless it's broke, which has only been one time, thankfully.” As for the 63s unique paint, “Didn't really do nothing but Krylon on it and put interior in it. The red...it's originally a primer white car. Then someone painted it red. And then the fenders are aftermarket; they've been changed. So, when I originally bought the car, I thought it was Gulf Blue and it was half-painted the faded blue, you see. So, I went ahead and did it, and then buffed it back so it would fade away and left it at that.” “There's not a lot of people now that know them. You know, remember back when you're growing up? Slug bug! Yeah, there's kids now that don't know that,” said Matthew. “They're a specialty car. I've been building for over 30 years, doing them for customers, doing them for myself. And their easy to work on or just something different. They're just stupid fun little cars. You can do anything you want with them.”

Car Show Diva By: Jeanie Rupprecht Occasionally, you have to step back and realize that we really do live in a small world and that's what happened when HE&M Saw, Utility Saw Manager, Rick Gwartney met Bill Flint. Several years ago, Rick was in Louisville, KY, for the NSRA (National Street Rod Association) Street Rod Nationals, working the HE&M Saw booth, when he met a gentleman who was showing a car, at the show, and was interested in a utility saw for some of his projects, both auto and ranch related. Well, HE&M Saw just happens to sell a very fine line of just that thing. So, for those unfamiliar, let's define exactly what a 'street rod' is and what it isn't. According to many rod enthusiasts “A street rod is an automobile, car or truck, manufactured before 1949, that has been modified to handle modern highways.” Typically, this includes the builder taking the body and pairing it with a late model chassis, transmission, engine, power steering, power brakes, AC, as well and all the bells and whistles you can think of. Think “Old School” look with modern amenities! A 'street rod' is not, a muscle car, a survivor or just a restored car. In most cases, these custom cars are chopped, channeled, lowered, shaved, frenched, louvered, given Easter egg colored, heavily glossed paint jobs, trimmed with lots of billet and custom leather interior to match. Once all this custom work is done, the owner stands back, checks the weather, packs his car cleaning tools, checks the weather again and gingerly heads off to a car show, providing there is not a cloud in the sky and the show is local and there are no dirt roads involved. Not Bill Flint, he believes in driving his cars. You can tell because even his pride and joy, 1942 Ford “Hardtop”, has bug guts and rock chips on the paint. This car is so sweet, it's been featured in “Street Scene” magazine 3 times, won at the NSRA show in Oklahoma and was nominated in Louisville. That's really something for a car that is driven to most of the shows it attends. Yes, it was trailered to Louisville, we won't fault anyone for that, it's a long way, but once there, he drove it all over town. Even as a young man, Bill Flint loved cars. Though he made his living for 52 years as a barber, these days he ranches close to 500 acres, and still manages to find time to build and play with cars. It may have taken him 20 years to build the '42, but it's okay, the detail is impeccable. Let's talk details. First, there were NO “hardtops” built in 1942…. “hardtop”, meaning that the roofline was rigid and sufficient enough that with front and back windows down, there is no post holding the roof up. Second, ALL consumer vehicle production halted in February of '42 and didn't resume until October of '45, by order of the government's Office of Production Management. By the end of WWII, Ford Motor Company had built nearly 90,000 complete aircraft and an additional 58,000 airplane engines for the British government. Why for the British government? Because Henry Ford was a pacifist and he opposed America's entry into WWII, until the attacks on Pearl Harbor. So, now that you've had your history lesson, we'll get back to Mr. Flint and his “street rod”. Bill gave his Ford a nice chop, 3” in the front and 6” in the back, widened the fenders, front and back, giving the car a really nice wide stance. Underneath, he added an '89 Mustang engine, the '85 Lincoln Town Car transmission and all the other details taken from modern

cars, but when you look at the details, you see art. But the devil is in the details, and that's why these cars take so long to build, like the original running lights; a style only used that year, and the subtlety of frenched taillights. But what really showed me his eye for detail is over the doors. The window frame was removed from the door body and added back to the roof line and a small, ever so slight bend or ridge, was left in definition. And the two-tone paint scheme, light copper over champagne, highlights all the right places and helps to exaggerate the widened body. It's the kind of forethought that separates the builders from the artist. This isn't the only car Flint has, no; he's a bit of a collector and mostly Fords! There is a '57 Ford Custom sitting on 17 tires, a '40 Ford street rod, but he bought it already done, a '70 Maverick with a '68 302 and 4.88 gears, all set up to turn a 12:47 in the 1/4 mile. And let's not forget the '70 Mach I, he bought to work on with his son, that's waiting to have the 351 Cleveland put in and a his '67 Fastback, aka Eleanor, that's had all the body work done but still needs paint and the 2011 Coyote to be installed. Then he took us to the garage attached to the house and there was the most beautiful, factory correct Sun Gold and White, 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner, with retractable hardtop. Now, is your head spinning? Mine was, and that's when he showed me his '37 Dodge pick-up. And again, the details make the difference between a nice truck and a show truck. First, he had to stretch out the frame to fit the '48 Buick straight 8, with 4 carburetors. All this power required a little reinforcement, so he added a '50 Chevy front axle, a '65 Ford pick-up 9 read end,

transmission from an '85 Chevy S10 5-speed and more fun than the law allows. Flint also built channels for the leaf springs to hid in, just an added custom touch. The color, I believe, is Root Beer and the custom interior and bar finish wood parquet bed, are real show stoppers. But he wasn't finished, Bill then had us follow him to another house, on the property, and when he opened the garage door, there sat his FactoryFive Racing MK4 Roadster, aka as a 1965 Shelby Cobra replica. Even after 50 years, the Cobra is still one of the most desirable cars around and Flints', which he hand built himself, certainly checks all the right boxes. So, why are we interested? Because while at the previously mentioned NSRA show in Louisville, Bill Flint bought a utility saw from Rick and that is when they discovered they live and ranch maybe 10 miles from one another. Flint needed a utility saw to cut frame rails and exhaust pipe, but also for fence post. He bought one saw and liked it so well, when he had an additional need, he bought a second model HE&M Utility Saw.

By Candy Cocktail For this month's artist spotlight, I have chosen to feature Charles Delaune, an American artist whose work is ideal for our patriotic 4th of July issue! The creator of Cartoon Pinups, Charles has illustrated a bevy of pinup beauties, from hot rod hunnies to rockabilly bombshells and Rosie the Riveter gals. From Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Charles Delaune is a freelance illustrator. Drawing since he was a child, he liked cartoon characters in particular. Crediting the beloved Peanuts comic strip as his first inspiration, he describes reading the small books of the Peanuts cartoons over and over again as a child. The young artist spent hours trying to draw Snoopy and the other famous characters perfectly. Young Charles also loved those classic Saturday morning cartoons, especially Looney Tunes and Popeye. He would try to draw any and every cartoon character he saw, even the characters on cereal boxes. However, as we grow older it lessens the time we have for fun things, and such was the case for Delaune. He quit drawing. That is until he had children of his own. As a dad, he started drawing characters and making books for his kids. He got a tablet for his computer and started doing freelance work online. Unfortunately, with freelance, he did not always have the opportunity to draw what he wanted, so a few years ago he decided to branch out and focus on the original work that he truly wanted to do: Pinups. Charles had developed an interest in the classic pinups so many of us adore, especially infamous artists George Petty and Gil Elvgren. As Delaune states, “What could be more fun than drawing beautiful women?” He describes how there is a playfulness in classic pinup that translates well into cartoons. The pinup playfulness pairs perfectly with over the top cartoons, merging the artist's interests. Charles stated that what has been a pleasant surprise for him is the vibrant vintage community out there that really has a passion for the era. He said he did not know anything about it until he started this work. He has since received so much support and made so many friends in this fun vintage community, and he is just getting started! You can learn more about Charles & his cartoon pinups on his website: www.cartoonpinups.com which also has links to all of his social media accounts. You can view his artwork or even purchase a commissioned piece for yourself.

Creativity, Engineering, and Workmanship. Do you know the story of Don Ridler? He is the former Detroit Autorama promoter who boosted the prominence of the event in the 50’s. He is credited with quickly turning the Michigan State Fairgrounds into the largest and finest auto show in the area. Don Ridler highlighted the shows with first-rate entertainment and outstanding cars. In the early 1960’s the Autorama had outgrown the fair grounds and was moved to Cobo Center, Detroit, Michigan. Unfortunately, Don Ridler passed from this world in 1963 at the age of 54 years young. The Autorama team immediately decided that an award was needed to be given in his honor. The Ridler Award was born and it has become the most prestigious award for automotive excellence in the world. It is presented to the vehicle that best represents: Creativity, Engineering, and Workmanship. The car that best represents these three areas will win this coveted award. Every car builder dreams of creating the best car in the world and hopes that their vehicle will win awards. It is great to have your vehicle recognized as special and exceptional. To win the award that stands above all other awards takes a lot of determination, creativity, and just plain hard work. This is the most esteemed achievement a car builder can receive. It is given only once a year at the Detroit Autorama to a newly built car that has never been shown anywhere before, and has been kept out of sight throughout the entire build. This is the basic and fundamental rule. Should the vehicle be shown in whole, or at any other event, including internet, magazines, video, television, or any other venue prior to the event, the car will be disqualified. The judges go through a complete checklist for every vehicle entered, including the basic functions as well as creativity and detail. Every entrant’s vehicle has to start and move under its own power, as well as show all basic driving characteristics. Eight finalists are chosen and these are the only ones that are able to compete for the world famous Ridler Award. A winner is selected from this “Great 8” and the celebration begins for one worthy owner, as well as for the runner-ups. It is an enormous honor for those chosen as the “Great 8” as well. These are the finest eight cars in the world. I am going to tell you about one of the 2019 “Great 8” cars. I have chosen this winner because his car was completely designed and built by the owner. The 1941 Willys was built by Quint Walberts, of Danville, Indiana,in his home garage over a span of 8 years on weekends. This custom car is Spectacular! The design, engineering, body work, and painting all were done by this one man. He had help holding parts during installation, disassembly, and reinstallation along with the interior, but this work of art was created by the talents of one man. Quint had a vision of what he wanted to build, planned it and built it. For this Willys to be selected as one of the “Great 8” and in contention for the prestigious Ridler is amazing. The paint color was custom mixed by Quint. The four stage pearl paint moves from blue to violet to magenta as the light changes, and all the graphics were designed and painted by the owner. Quint said, “I wanted it to look as though it was going 100 miles an hour standing still.” This is the reason for the extensive rake and the modified body lines. The interior is leather with a newly produced textured fiber material on the floor. This is not carpeting. The entire rear glass illuminates red when the brakes are applied. Everything is smoothed on the underbody and all the internals are hidden. The exhaust was custom designed and fabricated by Quint Walberts himself. This street machine is amply powered with a ZZ 572 engine from GM Performance, attached to a Moser Wavetrac rear via a TH400 transmission. The hand- made tube chassis is equipped with ridetech ShockWave suspension. Quint Walberts “Great 8” winning 1941 Willys will be showcased

By: Lynne Lightfoot The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Action Network (SAN) announced that the 10th Annual Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD) will be celebrated on July 12, 2019. The date marks the tenth consecutive commemoration in what is now an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection play in American society. The day was first recognized on July 9, 2010 due, in part, to U.S. Senate resolution 513 which was sponsored by Senators Jon Tester (DMT) and Richard Burr (R-NC). Previous resolutions were sponsored by co-chairs of the SEMAsupported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus. This honorary Congressional Caucus was formed in 1996 in honor of the 100th year of the car and to recognize the contributions the automotive performance and motorsports industries have made to the U.S. economy. It pays tribute to the quality, performance and safety of all motor vehicles and to America's ever growing love affair with the car and motorsports. Hundreds of events were staged nationwide to celebrate the first CCAD. Thousands attended events ranging from car cruises and shows to small-business open houses to “drive your car to work” displays. The effort was organized by SEMA, its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and the Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Councils to acknowledge the importance of the automobile in American culture as the inspiration for music, literature, photography, cinema, fashion and other artistic pursuits. The American automotive specialty and performance industry is an important economic engine, with consumer sales of motor vehicle performance and appearance enhancement equipment annually over $45 billion, while providing jobs for a million Americans. Growing exports of these U.S. products have been welcomed by consumers worldwide and have helped the U.S. balance of trade. The motorsports industry has also grown tremendously over the years to where today hundreds of thousands of amateur and professional participants enjoy motorsports competitions each year throughout the United States, attracting attendance in excess of 18 million people. Motorsports events rank among the most widely attended of all U.S. sports. Another aspect of our nation's heritage which has played an integral role in fostering America's love for motorsports in general and the automobile in particular is the collector car. From pre-War classics to street rods to '60s muscle cars, these vehicles, so carefully crafted and preserved, not only stand as testimony to American ingenuity and craftsmanship, they also serve as a resource for contemporary automobile design and as a source of recreation for tens of thousands of enthusiasts and collectors throughout the U.S. who attend events dedicated to these vehicles. Just by the nature of its existence, the Caucus is already raising the industry's profile on Capitol Hill and in the eyes of the public. These Congressional leaders have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby and acknowledge the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation's appreciation for the automobile's unique place in our history. The Caucus recognizes that the collection and restoration

of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of North America. The states of Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as most of the Canadian provinces, officially mark the occasion. In preparation for the tenth celebration of the nation's automotive heritage, enthusiasts and related businesses are already planning open houses, car cruises, club gatherings and educational events to commemorate the day. The SAN will again maintain and publicize a list of scheduled events to commemorate America's time-tested love affair with the automobile at www.semaSAN.com . In the New Orleans area, the Early Ford V8 Club of America is sponsoring a tour for Saturday, July 13. That morning, collector car owners from around the region will meet at Sam's Club at 3900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA. At 8AM they will leave that location and drive west on Hwy. 61 to Baton Rouge. Along the way, more collector car owners will join in. They expect to travel the 75 mile route in time for a 10AM guided tour of the Old Louisiana State Capitol at 100 North Boulevard which will last approximately 1½ hours. Parking is available in the River Road parking lot. Following the Capital tour, everyone will go to Mike Anderson's restaurant, 1031 W. Lee Drive, Baton Rouge, for lunch (see map). After lunch, everyone can go their own separate ways or meet up at the LSU Ag. Center and Botanical Gardens, 4560 Essen Lane, where there is plenty to see and enjoy. Those planning to participate must notify Anthony Pisciotta, President of the Early Ford V8 - Region Group #100, no later than July 8th. Arrangements must be made, so a head count is essential. Call Anthony at (504) 615-0418 or email him at anthonypisciotta@bellsouth.net
So get out there, take a tour and enjoy Collector Car Appreciation Day by sharing your beautiful vehicles with everyone else.

1. I started this project with my normal amount of research on my subject. With this project I had to research the sponsor and brand logo’s present and find good images to vectorize. When I vectorize something it makes it readable to my plotter to cut a stencil exactly. A vector is simply “lines” that my machine will understand and follow as a “path”. I will make sure I cover more of vectors in future articles because kustom paint and vectors go hand and hand now days for sure. After I make everything where I want it and sized accordingly I proceed to cut and then weed out my design. 2. Now that we have our design in place and where I think it should be fit it’s time to pull it. I carefully tape the top of the design and it dry fits it in place. Next I cut it in groups to pull in smaller sections. I pull the transfer up until the backing paper falls free and im holding nothing but a big sticker. I then very slowly roll the sticker back down with a nice and confident pace and make sure it connects smoothly. It takes practice but anyone can do it so don’t give up. I proceed to the next and finish placing my stencils. 3. After I pull my stencils I begin to cover all edges with a reduced white. I do many passes and make sure my coverage is great. Take your time. This is not a race. 4. My article is called OVERSPRAY for a reason. When using an airbrush you always have to clean the overspray off with your hand or a soft paper towel. Always. There will be the learning exception when you clear or kandy a project and forget to do so and it will all start to waterfall or show it’s face when you don’t want it to. I sometimes just spray it with a water hose or use my hand, find your best approach and go with that. Everyone is different and kustom painting is just trial by fire for sure. 5. To start my lightning I do nice big and fat strokes in a crack
32
JULY 2019
format. Real misty and big is key. The mist is gonna glow later so its important you have it. I start from the font and logos and work out. Everyone knows what it looks like so go with it. It’s just dagger strokes which I’ll cover in another article. There are no mistakes. After you cover the entire design and each stoke has a nice mist around it we will be ready to go to the next step. 6. Grab a nice transparent color and reduce it. In this one we did blue to match the wires Steven is using. Very carefully start to cover your entire project but only concentrate on the white paint. It will take many coats and a little time in between just to make sure it is a solid color. I didn’t want to cover all the logos to give it a nice little fade effect so I blended just tops and bottom on those but still remained heavy on lightning. 7. Now is the cool step that makes it all happen. Make sure your fine lines are on point before you touch your project. For this step you do a very small fine line of white in every lightning streak. It will take some time and sometimes a few passes but its worth it in the end. I also added a few more center highlights to the logos in areas I think that may need it. 8. One of the logos called for a pink star so I went ahead and masked it off with original reverse stencil I had saved from the beginning. I then sprayed it pink. 9. I pulled all my stenciled and took my time until it was done. I used a paper towel and very gently rubbed all the art with wax and grease remover to get rid of my hard edges. 10. Finally cleared and looking good. Just waiting for pick up now and these pics don’t do it justice. I hope you enjoyed this month’s OVERSPRAY !!! See you next month with a brand new article and don’t forget to email your projects you learned from this!!!!

Growing up in the 80s and 90s I always felt a little out of place, or maybe more like out of time. The good thing was that I wasn't alone. My older brother Jerry Lopez Jr. Had contracted the throwback disease as me! Our passion for anything OLD from Rock and Roll to Rotten cars was very strong. I'm sure that most of the illnesses stems from our dad Jerry Lopez Sr but Linda Lopez our mother wasn't really in search for a cure. In a world full of 5.0 Mustangs and I-ROC Camaros mom took us to School in a Jet Black 1967 Buick Wildcat 2dr hardtop with a 430 big block. Yea all of the kids laughed and asked if my mom was Batman but knowing that Batmobile beat the crap out of any other parents cars made me a happy kid. As for our Dad, some of you may have seen his yellow 55 Chevy Gasser "River Rat" dragging his back bumper all across the country. Dad has been living in the hotrod scene since his inception to this planet. Whether it was drag racing a 348 powered 60 Elcamino, a altered wheelbase 409 powered S10 or building and cruisin in some very cool street rods we have always done everything together as a family. Fast forward to now and life is getting cooler by the day with my beautiful wife Rachel and our 3 amazing children Daniel Jr, Cody and Allison. Dad started building the River Rat and it wasn't long before I got the Gasser itch. Having a windshield splitting 470" Olds in my 79 Trans am I started searching for an age appropriate body and stumbled upon a 56 Olds 2dr hardtop. Knowing exactly what I wanted and watching the River Rat come together I removed the body and cut the frame in half. After installing some rectangular box tubes up front and scoring a 1956 GMC axle it was coming together. The hardtop body was total crap and I found a $400 1956 sedan in Shreveport, La. so we took off. The sedan body wasn't ready for the world of wheels but it did still wear its original paint and I knew exactly what was wrong without any hidden surprises. After 4 1/2 years Captain America is born. Powered by an Edelbrock headed 470" Olds breathing through a Edelbrock Victor intake and a Quick Fuel 1050 this barge has run the best of a 6.84 at 98 in the 1/8th mile with a 1.44 60'. As we speak the 9" Ford with 4.56 gears is coming out in exchange for a 1957 Olds 9.3 with a 5.14. When it's done Captain America will be ALL OLDSMOBILE and hopefully in the 6.70-6.60 range. In the future, I would love to sit beside Rachel and watch our daughter backing up our boys as they take turns running down the strip in our creation called Captain America. Who knows maybe one day I'll get the nerve to jump in the River Rat! We plan on making a few races this year with the Southern Outlaw Gassers in Atmore Alabama, Gulfport Mississippi and Greer South Carolina Also with the Dirty South Gassers in Texas. All of which are the closest cats and kittens you will ever meet! So if you ever see Captain America and the River Rat in the pits come by and say hi because the people we have met on this journey are far more important to us than the cars, and if we aren't there open the door and let your kids climb on in for some pictures because that's what it's all about.

I
t’s not everyday that you get to run onto a track where a hot rod, rat rod, gasser, or jacked up car just finished completing a burnout. Sometimes jean shorts and a Gasser T-shirt with a pair of black converse, sounds like the perfect outfit on a hot blazing day. Or maybe a pair of light blue jeans with a Gasserman’s shirt on with my red converse on a cold winter night. Either way, the bottom of my shoes are going to end up black, so might as well make the day worth it. ...
Ronnie Dean
My name is Meadow SNOW Dean and I am a 17 year old Backup-Girl for the Southern Outlaw Gasser group. My passion for drag racing started back when my sisters and I were young and my dad would take us to the Atlanta Dragway about thirty minutes from our house. I LOVED going to watch the cars race down the track, whether they were 1960’s Mustangs or even a jacked up Chevy station wagon. When I was younger I loved all cars and one of my favorite parts about drag racing was when I got to sit in the stands with my dad. I’d ask him what each car was and what engine was in the car. My father, Mr. Ronnie Dean, knows a lot about cars and has taught my sisters and I a lot on the subject of drag racing. He’s what you call

‘crazy’, but he’s my dad and I love him. Anyway, fast forward about 4 years, one day my dad came to me in our kitchen, looks at me and asked, “What do you think about becoming a BUG?” My first thought was… ‘I don’t know’. I had been taking pictures on the sideline of dragstrips for about a year and I really loved snapping pictures and kind of being hidden. I never really seen a lot of young BUGS, so I didn’t really think about the ‘competition’. To be honest, I was really kind of scared of the thought of being in front of a roaring car with 500+ horsepower, but as they say, don’t hate it until you try it. Soooooo, the next drag race that my dad and I went to, he talked to a couple of people and I was told I would be backing up Rodney Potter, with Shade Tree Racing, and his car the Squirrel. That was my first car EVER. Honestly it wasn’t that scary. I had been on tracks before taking pictures and videos, the only difference was, now I was actually ON THE TRACK. I was part of the show instead of one of the ones taking pictures of the show. It was an awesome feeling knowing that the many eyes that were on the car were on me as well. . But it was AND still is scary! My favorite thing about the dragstrips is the people. There is so much love and positivity that is spread before the races, during the races, and even at the AFTER PARTY! Oh yea that’s right, you can catch my father and I at the after party whether if it's behind Jimmy Robert’s Trailer or at a crab boil with the Lopez family. I guarantee you will catch my dad and I somewhere wondering around. Someone you can never find, but is always somewhere, is the most famous Jessie Holmes. Mr. Jessie is the founder of the Southern Outlaw Gasser group. Gosh I could bet you a crab leg that Mr. Jessie is the hardest man to find on a race day, you will always hear that he was here or there, but the question is, can you actually find him? Stickers were even made for one race that read, ‘Where’s Jessie?’, that was kind of funny. Jessie Holmes is a big reason I have gotten where I am today, because he gave me a chance to be a BUG. Now I back up many cars for the racers; Rodney Potter who drives the ‘Squirrel’ a Ford coupe, Johnny Reb Armstrong with the ‘Johnny Reb’ Chevy coupe, Ron Talley who drives ‘Hot Shot Delivery’ with a Falcon station wagon, Jimmy Roberts with ‘Dixie Flyer’ Willy’s, Scott Burk with his Fairlane, Tony Incardona with his ‘Raunchy’ Ranchero, Larry Bagwell driving ‘The Beast’ which is a 55 Chevy, and my newest driver Chris Dunn with ‘THE BOOGIE MAN’ Chevy. Another one of my favorite things about going to races, is seeing all the smiles and feeling of being accepted into all the different families. What I mean by accepted is like the first time my father and I went to a race to Alabama with Sherry and Vic Temple. They so graciously shared their RV with us, as all 4 of us (Vic, Sherry, my father, and I) rode to Cottonwood, Alabama for the ‘Time Warp’ Nostalgia Night. That was one of the most memorable races I have attended. All of the gassers were lined up down the strip. I got to take pictures of over 50 gassers! They were all so beautiful. It was like Gasser heaven I swear.

I also enjoy taking pix in-between runs
I also loved riding around (not racing hehe) Mrs. Sherry’s golf cart or Jessie’s golf cart around with Tabi. Tabi’s beautiful soul and kind heart will be missed and is already missed. Racing was in her blood as it is mine.
Tabitha Leigh Martin & Meadow Someone I loved to take pictures with was Tabitha Leigh Martin. She was a kind soul that always had something positive to say. I got a lot of BUGing tips from Tabi (because she bugged as well as took pictures) and her mother, EJ Martin, who helped me to become the BUG I am today.

My father and I are rebuilding a 1968 Ford Mustang coupe with a 302 motor in it. I recently bought another mustang to use parts off of for my coupe, and I'm REALLY excited for what is to come for my car. Oooh I’m so excited, it’s the kid in me coming out. I plan to take my Mustang to college with me, after I enter my last year of high school. The cool thing is, I’m taking dual-enrollment in my senior year of High School which means I am getting a head start on college credit in certain classes. In my view I think I will like it better than taking all the AP classes that I have already taken, but I will have to wait and see. My plan is to major in Business at college, but that major could change in a year to something different. I’m just ready for this crazy thing that is about to start in less than a year called life. It’s all going to be on me, just like when I line my racers into the groove on a track, it’s all on me. I got this, and I hope if you are a teenager, you will consider becoming a Back-up-Girl. I promise you it’s not as scary as it seems. One final note, I would like to thank my sponsors, Jeff Sarka with ‘Gasserman’, Roger Havens with ‘Left Coast Gassers and Hot Rods’, Tommy Killingsworth Jr. with ‘Gasser Nation’, and Jessie Holmes, for giving me this extravagant opportunity in the Southern Outlaw Gasser Group. ……… Meadow

DIRT TRACK REVIVAL By: Chavus Holland Welcome back everyone! It’s been a wild month since I left off last time! Let’s dive right in… Let’s start May 18, we were at Hattiesburg Speedway. There were 15 modifieds registered and we started last in our heat race. Chase did a fine job cleanly driving his hotrod through the pack to 2nd as he challenged for the win! Our teammate (Chase’s 15 year old buddy, Jade Luzenberg, who drives the number 246 modified) had a rough night! He flipped his car on the front straightaway in the heat race! Jade was unharmed, but his car looked pretty rough! Now for the feature…Chase started 3rd and was challenging for a position on a restart, when a fellow competitor squeezed down on him causing our car to wheel hop him and fly into the air! That’s about all I’m going to say about that!...I thought it was going to end our night, but we were able to finish the race with a gimped up car for a 4th place finish! Did I mention it was a full moon night! There was some crazy driving in all classes! We came out better than most, so overall it was another good night with another top 5 finish! I’ll take it! We worked late nights the following week to help our teammate get his car rebuilt and back race ready for the following weekend! We did it! Next race May 25, at Hattiesburg Speedway…we finished 2nd again in our heat race. We started 3rd in the feature with our teammate Jade starting 2nd! Chase and Jade put on one heck of a race! They battled each other (clean) the entire race for the 2nd position! All the while with the leader right there in their sight! With just 2 laps to go, a lapped car pinched the leader towards the wall and this allowed our teammate Jade the opportunity to take that top spot and bring home his first feature win! Chase brought us home 3rd with no damage…well, at least up until after the race!!!...So after the race was over, we got PURPOSELY rammed by the old guy who had lead most of the race and finished 2nd! I couldn’t see it when it happened from where I was standing, and Chase didn’t tell me about it until we were already heading home! We watched the gopro/in car video at home and were puzzled why the old guy did that to Chase!!! I still don’t know what that was about! Chase raced him very clean! It really sucks because I’m trying to teach Chase how to drive and act like a man! And here you’ve got this 60 something year old man who takes a cheap shot at our car AFTER the race was over, ON PURPOSE! What ticked me off even more was, he hit Chase hard enough to bend a balljoint, as well as cut the sidewall out of a brand new tire! So we won $200 for 3rd place finish and now we’ve got $160 worth of damage for no reason…after the race!...Maybe it’s the heat that has these people acting stupid… Maybe it’s the fact that a couple of 15 year olds are kicking butt! I don’t know! CONGRATS again to our teammate Jade Luzenberg on picking up his first feature race win! Next Race, June 1…Hattiesburg Speedway…22 Modifieds in the house, including the local modified superstar out of Pace, FL (#6) Ryan Fowler! They broke the heat races into 3 separate groups. Ryan Fowler won the first heat guaranteeing himself the pole position for the Feature! Chase won the 2nd heat putting us outside pole beside the 25 year veteran modified racer, Ryan Fowler. The track was awful! From the middle of the track to the bottom it was a
46
JULY 2019
muddy slop hole! From the middle of the track to the wall, it was a one grooved dustbowl! Basically, it was a high speed demolition derby! We were looking like we had a solid 2nd place car until a series of cautions and restarts dealt us a bad hand! Fowler used his experience to manipulate the restarts in a way that made it appear that Chase jumped the start! They claimed Chase jumped the start, but Chase was never warned by radio, or flagmen, or track personnel, not one time! Chase never fired until after Fowler fired! but that didn’t stop us from being penalized and moved back a spot (WITHOUT A WARNING!) which made us lose 2 positions on the track! That’s bad on any night, but it’s especially bad when the track is in such horrible racing condition! The car that got our position for free, ended up spinning out and wiping out the body on our car! We finished the race in 4th position but our car was in terrible condition! It crushed the header flat on the passenger side and by the end of the race there wasn’t a single piece of our body that was not mangled up!!!

We decided that it was time to take a week off and spend that time building a new body! Since we’ve teamed up with the Luzenberg’s, we’ve been buying tools and equipment a piece at a time, so we can do ALL repairs and rebuilds in house! Our overall goal is to teach these young guns how to build complete bodies, bumpers, and anything else that we frequently consume on these hotrods!...Well…We all went to work on it! With some late nights in the shop, and all hands on deck, we were very proud of our first attempt at building and installing our own body! What started out as 7 sheets of 4ft x 10ft aluminum, now looked like a racecar! I’m not gonna lie, it was a LOT of work!!!...but, it was well worth it knowing that it saved us money that we will now be able to use somewhere else on our car! We did a sponsor call out on our Facebook page and with that we were able to get enough sponsorship money to cover the materials and also pay for the wrap/graphics! You guys are awesome!!!
Jade and Chase working on the new body!

NOW BACK TO THE RACE TRACK…
We love our fans!!!
We decided to break out our new body and graphics at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS! June 15, we hit the road headed North with our fresh and clean new look! 8 modifieds on hand at the famous “House of Hook” and we were 4th fastest in hotlaps. We lined up 2nd row inside for the heat race and off we go! The first lap saw the pole sitter, Spencer Hughes, take charge where he never looked back as he led it flag to flag for the win! Chase fell into a comfortable 3rd place behind the 008 car of Greg Hollinsworth. Well, so I thought he was comfortable in 3rd…did I mention that Chase’s mentor, (34) Noah Daspit was at the “House of Hook” as well? And he’s not sitting in the bleachers spectating tonight! Noah started last, and here he comes, quick fast and in a hurry!!! With 4 laps to go Noah closed in on Chase’s rear bumper! WOW!!! (Chase told me later that he could hear Noah behind him!) Chase ran the same line he had been running the rest of the race as he had no clue what kind of show was going on behind him!!! Noah tried him inside… Noah tried him outside…he just couldn’t get a run good enough to get beside Chase! With the white flag in the air, coming off of Turn 4, Noah got up really high and used the cushion to launch his rocket down the front straightaway and all the way under Chase into turn 1!!! It looked like he had the position, but somehow Chase powered off of turn 2 and down the back straightaway out front of Noah! With the checkered flag in site, and Noah on his bumper, Chase brought home that 3rd place finish in the heat!
Chase and Noah coming under the checkered flag!
Feature race time! We made a couple small adjustments and off we go, starting in 3rd with Noah on our outside! Chase dropped to 4th as Hollinsworth (008) took the lead and Noah (34) took over the 2nd spot! That left Chase and Spencer Hughes (11) battling for the 3rd spot! Hughes was a couple car lengths ahead of Chase but Chase was able to reel him in and he began challenging him for the position! These two drivers ran hard and clean, lap after lap, side by side, with Hughes finally overtaking Chase with just a few laps remaining! We came home 4th, without one single scratch on our race car!!! GREAT NIGHT to end a long week of hustling! Our teammate (246) Jade Luzenberg came home with a solid 5th place finish! Great job!!!
I want to apologize to my readers for not being as detailed this month with my article! I really struggled writing this article because there’s a BUNCH that I could have said…but I decided it was best to keep everything more positive, so I did my best! I know I promised ya’ll a year ago, when we started this article, that I would share the good times and the bad! The highs and the lows…but I just need to let the cards fall where they may and take the high road for now! Maybe it’s just me…maybe I’m just being too sensitive! HOWEVER, I learned during this past off season, (while I was searching for material to write about) that I can revisit some of these old adventures! Stay tuned!!! Again, we really appreciate you all!!! Next month I will have some great, high resolution pictures to share with you all from our photo shoot with the new body and graphics! Can’t wait to share these new (and old) sponsors with you all! We hope to see you all soon at the local race track! Thank you for reading! Until next time… Chavus
