“ There are people God has put in your life right now that are being blessed because of you. They may not ever recognize it, they may not give you credit, but don’t worry, God is keeping the records. Those are seeds that you’re sowing. He’ll make sure you are blessed in greater ways. ” …… Joel Osteen Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane By: Jimbo My congratulations go out to Tony Giametta of RedLine LumTronix, in Ocean Springs, MS. It took years of hard work and determination to get from their kitchen table to where they are today... their patent was approved !!! And now they hold the patent for the Halo Headlight for all to see. I knew August was going to be hot but I wasn’t expecting so much rain. And it seems to rain on the week-end more than during the week. My grass grows fast but to it’s to wet to cut and then the rain starts on Friday night or Saturday morning keeping some of us from backing our cars out of the garage for the local cruise-ins. September is going to be a busy month and everyone is getting ready for Cruisin’ the Coast. Thousands of cars and trucks are already registered. Lets hope for good weather for all the events that will be taking place the next two months.. Governor Phil Bryant will be on the Coast Sept 23 for the Governor's Ride 2017 for the Warriors Motorcycle ride and again on the 30th for the Gov. Phil Bryant’s Home Of Grace HOG RIDE and this year a Car/Truck Show has been added. Car show participants and spectators will get a close up view as hundreds of motorcycles fill the parking lot at the HOG Festival taking place at the First Baptist Church, 12190, Hwy. MS-605, Gulfport, MS 39503. around noon Saturday. Time to put this magazine to bed so till next month.. enjoy your time at some of the activities listed this month. Here are some of the emails….. Jimbo, Thank you for this reminder. Another year gone by already? Wow! The older I get, the faster the time goes. Yes, sign me up for another year of Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine. I don’t do computers, e-mails, facebook or any other electronic communication. I enjoy keeping up with all the fun you all are having in the South thru your magazine. You and your crew do a great job. Don’t change a thing. “If ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Gulf Coast MotorSports, does it for an old school wrenchin’, weldin’, fabricatin’ redneck, veteran “Deplorable” like me. Thank You Rich Sutton, Jersey Shore, PA.

Jimbo, These are things to think about….. I mean, who had the time to dream all this up??????? * If you attempt to rob a bank you won't have any trouble with rent/food bills for the next 10 years, whether or not you are successful. * Do twins ever realize that one of them is unplanned? * What if my dog only brings back my ball because he thinks I like throwing it? * If poison expires, is it more poisonous or is it no longer poisonous? * Which letter is silent in the word "Scent," the S or the C? * Why is the letter W, in English, called double U? Shouldn't it be called double V? * Maybe oxygen is slowly killing you and It just takes 75-100 years to fully work. * Every time you clean something, you just make something else dirty * The word "swims" upside-down is still "swims". * Intentionally losing a game of rock, paper, scissors is just as hard as trying to win. * 100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars. Today everyone has cars and only the rich own horses.

cleaner?” Years later, my wife agreed to purchase our mid-’30s farmhouse under the condition that I install a dishwasher. Once again, I fell prey to the mushroom effect. Kitchen cabinets shorter than current standards and 1930s wiring and plumbing soon resulted in a room stripped to the studs. A year and a half later the project reached completion. I swore it would never happen to me again. Despite devout efforts to avoid it, I’ve learned instead just to live with it. Although there can be an assortment of complicating conditions that make it almost unbearable. The “Deadline Effect” is the most common and will always ensure the mushroom effect will take over. That last minute car repair before the big car show will unfailingly result in a stripped stud, broken bolt, or leaking hose. The “Spouse Effect” is often a direct contributor to the mushroom and deadline effects. Best characterized by your spouse’s continuous reminders that your project is taking longer, costing more, and has grown larger than the original estimate. After 30 years of marriage, the only treatment (not remedy) I have found so far for the spouse effect is to smile and nod politely while repeating three simple words…“You’re right, dear.” I was jarred back to the moment when the receptionist called, “Mr. Simpson, the doctor will see you now.” I was escorted back to a chair seemingly better suited for execution than any medical procedure. As the doctor entered the room he exclaimed, “You’re back again, what did you do this time?” I started to explain how it all started simple enough, a little mid-winter project to clean up my wife’s show car and eliminate some rust in the back of one of the quarter panels, and before I knew it the entire back of her car was stripped to bare metal and the prospects of making the spring car show were dim. He instructed me to sit still as he removed my wife’s car from my eye. As he scraped away at my eye, I mentally rehearsed for my return home…“You’re right, dear! You’re right, dear! You’re right, dear! ”Story by Mark Simpson from The Classic Car Restoration Club

Basically threw everything but the body and frame away and started over. All the work minus the paint was done by me. Wiring, interior, motor build, all assembly etc. built the car from a body and frame in 90 days We broke a piston in the blower motor doing a burnout close to our home, and decided we wouldn't put the blower back on until we could get a billet one with fuel injection. So for now it's staying with a single carburetor. Everyone always ask what happened to the blower. The way it is now is so much easier to drive so I'm in no hurry to change it back Brent Anderson Jimbo, The Mushroom Effect Once again, I found myself seated in the eye doctor’s waiting room. Time passes slowly with a metal shard embedded in your eye. I began to contemplate the chain of events that led me here, even though I had been wearing safety glasses. It wasn’t long before I realized the “Mushroom Effect” had once again bitten me – a force that is undeniable, unpredictable, and often times completely unavoidable. It always starts innocently enough, with a simple project planned to take only a few hours to complete and without warning it mushrooms into a major undertaking, perhaps risking life and limb. I pressed hard to recall the first time I encountered this act of fate. Soon I remembered my brother changing out the air cleaner on his ’60 Chevy for a small Cal Custom model. The nut he dropped during the installation and presumed had fallen to the floor, actually found its way into the carburetor only to result in a hole punched in the top of one of his pistons as he fired up the old bow-tie. As he rebuilt the engine on the floor of my parents’ garage, I couldn’t help but think, “This all started with an air

Jimbo, Ten Things That Will Disappear In Our Lifetime. This is USA oriented, but Canada and the rest will not be far behind. Whether these changes are good or bad depends in part on how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come. Maybe not in the seniors of today lifetimes but more likely in our children's. 1. The Post Office Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills. 2. The Check Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with check by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business. 3. The Newspaper The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services. 4. The Book You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages I said the same thing about downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book. And think of the convenience! Once you start

flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget instead of a book. 5. The Land Line Telephone Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes. 6. Music This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates are simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is "catalog items," meaning traditional music that the public is familiar with. Older established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit. To explore this fascinating and disturbing topic further, check out the book, "Appetite for Self-Destruction" by Steve Knopper, and the video documentary, "Before the Music Dies." 7. Television Revenues The networks are down dramatically. Not just because of the economy. People are watching TV and movies streamed from their computers. And they're playing games and doing lots of other things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV. Prime time shows have degenerated down to lower than the lowest common denominator. Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every 4 minutes and 30 seconds. I say good riddance to most of it. It's time for the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let the people choose what they want to watch online and through Netflix. 8. The "Things" That You Own Many of the very possessions that we used to own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future. They may simply reside in "the cloud." Today your computer has a hard drive and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is on a CD or DVD, and you can always re-install it if need be. But all of that is changing. Apple, Microsoft, and Google are all finishing up their latest "cloud services." That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider. In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That's the good news. But, will you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert. 9. Joined Handwriting (Cursive Writing) Already gone in some schools who no longer teach "joined handwriting" because nearly everything is done now on computers or keyboards of some type (pun not intended) 10. Privacy If there ever was a concept that we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy. That's gone. It's been gone for a long time anyway. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone. But you can be sure that 24/7, "They" know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS coordinates and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits. "They" will try to get you to buy something else. Again and again and again. All we will have left of that which can't be changed.......are our "Memories." Sent in by: tstauffer6@ Jimbo, My dad was a great person. His twin brother was too. Their mother died when they were babies. Their father died while they were in high school. They were school sports stars. They were in the Pacific in WWII. They worked in oil & gas. fewer residents than Wyoming. Mom spent much time supervising dad. She would tell him if he did anything wrong, or if he had a wrong thought. She knew right from wrong, as far as he was concerned. Dad didn't earn a lot of money. To him, the free things in life were best. Before we got TV, we went to movies. We didn’t see the movie. We parked the car where we could watch people going to the movie. People would get all dressed up, and walk to the theatre. Movies were upstairs above an A&P grocery store. The A&P closed at 6pm, before movies started. Street parking was free after 6pm. In the movie house, at the top of the stairs, a little lady sold tickets. She was a single lady who lived alone. On Sundays, after church, we would take her for car rides. She gave us a plastic statue of St. Christopher with a magnetic base. We put it on the dashboard of our 1955 Chevy, to keep us safe. She never seemed afraid of dad's driving. Like most good things, folks criticize St. Christopher. That statue kept us safe for seven years. In 1962, mom totaled the car. We were safe inside. I remember watching the car crumple before I got bounced off the roof. Maybe St. Christopher's statue was left in the wrecked car. Happy Motoring mrlonranger@
Gizmos Carriage House AKA Poppys Garage September 2017 Seems the daily monsoon season has set up shop over South Mississippi. These watery, almost daily events, hamper many outdoor activities, and especially fun with cars events. Generally, I do not leave the Carriage House in a pouring rain, however if I am out and get caught in the rain, I try to just roll with it and stay as dry as I can, since my hot rod is not equipped with side windows, nor fenders and not even a hood. The upside while riding in the rain most folks don't tailgate me because my little car throws four perfect rooster tails, one off of each fenderless wheel, that tends to make people stay a decent distance away. These daily deluges also serve many other useful purposes. For those inclined to have beautiful lawns these showers are just the ticket, they also save on watering those lawns. The rain storms/ showers aid in lowering the temperatures of homes which also helps us save a few bucks on the old power bill. And they also help to knock down and rinse away all the dust and pollen that collects on just about everything. Kind of like a rinse cycle on a washing machine but outside. Another fact I find most interesting about rain is it's the same water that was placed on the Earth since the Earth was created. There is no such thing as new water. The earth is the ultimate recycler. It rains and fills ponds and streams and lakes or freezes. Then it melts or evaporates and comes back down as rain again. And the ground is very good water filter. Something to think about as you tool down the road watching the rain, it's the same water that Adam and Eve had available to them. I'm off to the Carriage House, got to dodge some dinosaur bath water, till next time.. Gizmo.

This month we started at the Silver Slipper Casino's weekly car/bike night, fun time as always. Made the run to Diamondhead for a new 3rd Friday night cruisin at the True Value Hardware Store. Food and drinks were available and they even have a live band at this one around 20 cars showed up in the rain. The next weekend kept us busy. Friday night we hit the Kiln for the Cruise In Cafe, they have a cruiser meal special and give out a car of the night plaque. Saturday we made it to the 6th annual Red Creek Classics car picnic and cruisin along with the NSRA Appreciation day in Wiggins at Flint Creek Water Park.. Fun day with some great food, The Red Creek Classic car club host a real nice event here. We left the picnic that evening and headed to Long Beach for the 4th Saturday monthly cruisin. This is one of the older ones on the coast and still a fun one to attend. Our next round of cruising had us at the Pass Christian Harbor for the 1st.Friday cruisin. You never know at this one, they may have a grill going with hot dogs, grilled Balogna or Smores. The 1st Saturday had us at Edgewater Mall for the Coast Cruizers Cruisin always over 100 cars/trucks and lots prizes and gifts given out. We finished out the month at the Misfits Street Krewzers 2nd Saturday cruisin at the Bay St.Louis Harbor. This one has over 12 places to eat and 30+ plus little shops for the ladies to visit. See y'all somewhere or everywhere and remember to watch for our friends on bikes out riding also. Al A widowed, crusty old retired infantryman had been dating a proper lady for a while. Urged on by their desires, they decided it would be a good idea to get married and share living expenses. Before they proceeded with any plans they went out to dinner and had along conversation regarding how their marriage might work. They discussed, living arrangements and so on. The old infantryman decided it was time to broach the subject of their physical desires. “How do you feel about sex?” he asked, “I would like it infrequently” replied. The old boy sat quietly for a moment, then leaned over towards her and asked,…. “Is that one word or two?”

Larue Flurry of Vestry brought his 1930 Model A Ford which he has had for 6 years. He did a ground up "retro mod" on this good looking rod. This car sports a 350 Chevy with automatic transmission and his air condition is 2 windows down at 80 mph. Larue is a regular at the Lucedale Hardee's Breakfast. He has 60 years of "car" experience and owns several other collectibles - 51 Ford pickup, 52 Ford pickup, and a 53 Jeep. See you next month Larue. Jerry and Dottie DeVries of Poplarville brought this beautiful 1952 Chevy Bel Air Deluxe memory maker. This was their first time to the Lucedale Hardee's breakfast and we hope it won't be their last. They have had this car for 12 years. Jerry restores but doesn't do engine work, although he has the knowledge and experience to do so. He and Dottie have been married for 58 years and had a car like this in the beginning of their life together. They own a '50 Mercury 2-door coup, a 1930 Model A Ford street rod and an '87 Chevy Silverado all original with less than 20,000 miles. Jerry and Dottie got into this hobby after he retired.

This month there were 32 vehicles present at Hardee's. It would be hard to calculate all the car knowledge that is represented each month at the Lucedale Hardee's breakfast. As our world ever changes, it is a wonderful step back in time to see these vehicles and the love the owners have for them. It is also pleasant to see people still stay married for a lifetime! By: Scott Strenzel aka “Scooter” Lets tear up AMERICAN GRAFFITI! Dig it out, Rent it, Buy it! The car hobbies “gone with the wind” movie... AMERICAN GRAFFITI! I have been blessed with having many hours of private conversation with a few of that movies biggies, with Candy Clark and Bo Hopkins being at the top of the page with hours of bonding and learning inside little facts that didn't come out when the movie was gaining popularity. I'd like to share some cool things that if you are a car guy or gal and appreciate that movie will be fun to know and tell others Some of the stuff I am going to tell you will dictate the need to either remember what I tell you, or go watch that movie a few more times. Believe me it won't hurt you. I was the way it really was back in the forming days of NOSTALGIA! Also, these things are not on the trivia on line AG pages. I got then from the actors I have talked to in interviews. OK lets grab a gear and power shift into second. I will begin with the “quickie” little things that I feel are actually cool to know IF you are a real AG fan. OK. When Ron Howard (Steve), comes up to Toad (Vespa Charles Martin Smith) and wants his white 58 Chevy back to go see what his gal Cindy Williams (Laurie) is doing in Harrison Fords (Falfa's) Black 1955 Chevy. He grabs the keys, jumps in at ARNOLDS DRIVE IN, fires it up and backs out of the space. WATCH THE EXHAUST TIPS AS I HAVE DOZENS OF TIMES. I always figured it was a shot motor and was oil smoke! Nope, Candy told me it was because the car had set there for like 2 days and it was REAL COLD during the 25 days AG was made. It was simply a cold engine that had cold exhaust smoke. Next up.
George Lucas (one of his early movies) who has since became a multi billionaire from STAR WARS, was an actual “car guy”. He used to take the Falfa ‘55 Chevy out at lunch time and make a few dollars drag racing. More on him later on. Candy also told me she spent many hours consoling Richard Dreyfuss, due to the break up of his first love / girl-friend a few days before AG shooting began. He was quite broken hearted so she
10
SEPTEMBER 2017
tried to help him stay relaxed to do his character for the movie. We all should realize that 99 % of the actors in AG were doing their first full race movie acting roles. Continuing on. If you watch any and all shots of Richard in the blue, ‘67 Citroen, you will never actually see him driving it??? Because he didn't know how to drive!! He grew up in New York and his parents never had a car either. Shorty after coming to California he did learn how to drive, but not until after AG. If you see him in it moving they are either pushing or a non see-able cable is pulling the Citroen around. Moving on. There were only two of the whole bunch of AG peeps that actually knew the significant “WHY” of the PHAROS car plaque being displayed in the back shelf of the Mercury Bo Hopkins (Joe) drove. Instead of hanging from the rear bumper. You have to watch the movie as the plaque only shows on screen for a few seconds and for a very few different times. I'm going to give you the straight skinny on the WHY of it all. I hope you all, especially the younger set finds this interesting and enjoyable. Basically George and Bo were already into hot rods, enough to be in the know about car club plaques. First, if you were a member of a car club you got a plaque, hung it on your back bumper with enough chain so when you drove slowly, like into the local A&W it would scrape and make enough noise that it got everyone's attention to let them know you were a member of the CAM BUSTERS or what ever car club. Plus, it was a given back then that IF you dragged / cruised enough that your plaque got UN-readable or scraped too short re-moving the club name, you received a new one for free at the clubs expense. BUT if you were in a dispute with another or many other car clubs or wanted to show that you and your club literally had a bad ass reputation, you would either want or have to display your plaque inside your ride so it would not get defaced or stolen. Watch the AMERICAN GRAFFITI and be in the know like George and Bo. Jeepers Wally, doing this brings up a couple TRUE NOSTALIGIA FROM SCOOTER drag racing stories, check them out please!

A COUPLE OF DRAG RACE STORIES FROM THE 60'S
Now about the AMERICAN GRAFFITI STYLE DRAG RACE!
The first one shows how stupid Scooter could be at age 15, when hanging with older guys. The second one was done totally AMERICAN GRAFFITI style like Falfa & Milner. My dad was manager and generally the only Chevy salesman at our local dealership. I got the job as lot boy at age 15. I was driving my ‘58 Corvette, and a ‘54 Chevy. The ’54 came in handy for when I tore up the ‘58, which was often. I was living large at $1.10 an hour. It was 1961 remember back then there was no limit as to the numbers of hours a kid could work, so I made big bucks. One day I had to make a parts run. After the delivery I'm heading back to the car lot from Big Rapids in my ‘58 Vette. About 12 miles out I see these two cars lined up at Crapo Flats, one is the light blue ‘58 Impala, 348 250 HP, 3 on the tree. I knew that car because my dad sold that used car to a local 20 - 21 year old guy by the name of Loren. The other was a ‘59 or ‘60 red Corvette, super rare car back then in our small northern Michigan town. I stopped and it turns out they are about to have a drag race but have no one to flag it. Loren knew me a little from the dealership. He asks if I'd be willing to flag them. Actually I flash lighted them, its quicker and harder to cheat at, than raising up a hankie. The red Vette beats Loren's heavier Impala fairly badly. They came back, and we talk some. Turns out the Vette guy is going to Ferris college. He asks me how in hell I have a ‘58 Corvette at 15? I told him I had saved since the mid fifties for it and got it when I was still 14. He asks if I want to race him for something like 3 bucks which was 3 hrs of work to me... Heck I'm up for it !! I'm listening to his non solid lifter 283 Vette engine and I KNOW that it has to be the 230 or the 245 HP hydraulic lifter sled motor, so I am totally able to kick his butt with same weigh. What began as a 270 cu.in. is now bored 30 over, plus 2 X4 barrel, solid lifter 283 so I have at-least 25 HP on him or more. Hell, I’m thinking that 15 yr old punk Scooter has just made 3 hrs of work in 14 or 15 seconds. Loren is going to use my flashlight to start us. We are on Michigan highway US 131. I back up a bit and do a tire burn out. I want to have my tires clean and warm. ( FYI for U oldies that remember, I had 8:20 X15 inch Atlas Plycron bias plys with my 4:11 posi. ) I went a bit over the start line that had been set up, so I backed up, got right next to the already beaten college guy and shoved my T-10 to the top of the pattern so as to be in 1st. I had run enough drags to know enough to come out of the hole at 3800 RPM's, dump my HD truck clutch and then I'd be performing, my right foot staying on the floor, power shifts at real close to 7 grand on the tach-o-meter. FLASH It's ON... !! OOPS darn... or a score of swear words, its in 3rd not 1st !! I lost and you could smell the burning clutch for 50 feet as I felt like a stupid 15 yr old. It cost me $3 bucks, but even more to toss in a new clutch assembly. Even with my massive discount, my a new pressure plate, disc and throw out bearing was like $35 bucks. And a special thanks to the guy in the sky that I had the knowledge and could do the labor myself at my stall in the Chevy garage on off time. I always had the service manager / small game hunting buddy, Bob L. give my work the once over before I dropped it down. Stepping back a bit. I literally “slipped my way back to the dealership and told no one except Bob, until after I got it done.
It's like 1963, my dad sold a new Impala SS 300 HP 327 4 speed, red convertible to Harvey Ray a older local hot rodder (remember his name for later stories) A local Leonard brand named gas station & used car lots son, Russ, had 1963 ½ fast back Ford. 335 HP., solid lifter, 390, 4 speed, hard top. The word was out at school that Harvey and Russ were going to drag race at the usual starting line we had brush painted all across the road every year. Our makeshift dragstrip on US-10, just barely ran up the hill to Rita's Restaurant. (You also need to remember Rita's for more stories later on.) We used a 100 foot tape and took the time to walk 1320 feet off. Myself and my fellow CAMBUSTERS CAR CLUB member performed this duty each year as a club. Up at the finish line we had painted the finish line white, about six inches wide, because this was a serious long time in wind race. And there was going to be a few guys to say who won if it was close. Wholly pig poop BATMAN! It was to take place at high noon. Harvey was out of school and Russ was in my junior class. The word spilled thru the whole 8th to 12th grades. We didn’t have a junior high school back then. The 8th graders were with us older class mates. I bet at-least a hundred kids skipped out for the day at lunch time. There were dozens of cars on both sides of the starting line areas. Well classmate Russ with his 335 HP and lighter hard top body kicked Harvey's Chevy butt with his Ford. So bad that about a year later my dad sold Harvey a new silver blue 1964 Vette coupe with the 2.02 heads, solid lifters, 650 Holley, 365 HP, 327. And that my fellow car guys and gals brought on off the top of my head about 3 or 4 more true and fun stories that are ‘off the gauge’ car stories to be in here soon. Here are some of the future stories subject matter. A death. A shredded set of ready to have re-capped tires doing 85 MPH in a 36 Buick. Sergeant Emerson Lake, (his real name) almost losing his state cop hat at Rita's. (remember his name too, fellow GCMSM readers) A crash. Two guys and a 2 ½ gallon interior gas can?? And me passing my dad at 145 MPH (NOT GOOD) !

Labor Day, when I was a youngster, meant the end of the summer for the school-aged kids. The holiday meant that it was time to go back to school. I am not sure I recognized it as much more than a time for the family to get together at a park to swim, play horseshoes, badminton, croquet, softball, drink soda pop, have a picnic and eat lots of good old fried chicken. Thinking back now, I wonder if those conversations the adults engaged in were about working and labor. I never really listened to them. I am wondering if the holiday has lost any of its meaning over the years. I hope not because it is important to remind ourselves of the importance labor played in the strength of our nation in its’ infancy and now. The first Labor Day was held in 1882. The holiday became law in 1894 and is always held on the first Monday in September. It was a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. The purpose is a yearly national tribute to the contribution workers have made throughout history to the strength, prosperity, and wellbeing of our country. It was originally celebrated with street parades allowing the public to show appreciation for the workers who are the backbone of this great country. Giving consideration to Labor Day in relation to its official beginning in 1894 and how it is viewed and celebrated in 2017, it appears to some that it is not as meaningful now and has lost some of the luster. Unfortunately, all the automation, electronics, and desire for instant gratification, diluted a lot of the national pride and history. I sure hope there is a way to re-capture work ethic in our country and the stature of the American workers, both male and female. When we were children it wa s important to have a job. Earning money may or may not have been a necessity for family survival, but it was a way for every child to add to their self -esteem. In my school it seemed that every child worked. If you did not work at some job, others looked at you with disfavor. We worked at root beer stands, groceries, service stations (back when they provided service!), drug stores, bowling alleys, laundries, motels, janitorial services, newspapers, car dealers, bailing hay, picking fruit and vegetables, landscaping, and a wide variety of jobs. The length of the summer was important because that time away from school allowed us the opportunity to be employed and save our earnings in order to compensate for times when we had fewer hours to work. Having a job was a status symbol

in my community. I could not begin to name all the persons that shaped my life, both morally and ethically because of their mentoring and caring for me as I matured in my work habits. I will never be able to repay them. As we celebrate this Labor Day with family and friends, let’s take some time to think about all the workers that made this country what it is today, and give thanks for their efforts. Thank your great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers, your grandmothers and grandfathers, mothers and fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that helped shape your work ethic. It is important. Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it.” Happy Labor Day!

Monster Trucks & Muscle Cars Brian Barsema Has anyone ever started a car show for a charity? Has anyone ever started a car show for charity and had it completely go beyond expectations? I have experienced and been a part of many of those shows. This time, I got lucky enough to catch wind and attend another. This time, we had the pleasure of traveling to St. Cloud in Central Florida. This town had the old town small town feel in the shadows of Orlando. We attended a car and monster truck show hosted by Pink Heals of St Cloud, Florida. A first-year show, this show did not fail to impress. I had an amazing time. The community showed up in force to support this event. The local businesses were warm and welcoming and raising money for a great cause. This organization was raising money for 5 children with cancer. From the volunteers who looked overwhelmed, the community response to business owners randomly donating profit from selling small goods, to donations of auction items, and firefighters pulling no punches trying to keep everything organized. It made an amazing event to witness. The show took place in the downtown section of town in the shadows of a beautiful city hall. Downtown had many paintings of cars, firetrucks, trains on the side of buildings. One street ended up being cars and the next monster trucks with a bunch of cars at center stage near the center of it all. Burnouts, fire truck pulls to raise money, to other vender booths setup for this event, auctions, even with motorcycles groups coming to help this event got much larger than expected. On Aug. 12, 2017, I learned between the car show and the other events hosted at later dates raised 25,000 dollars for the five warriors fighting cancer. The Pink Heals Organization started with an idea and with Facebook and other social media turned it one of the best fundraiser car shows I have ever witnessed. With this commitment, anyone wanting to do a car show or raise money for something special, take the steps and do the hard work. The proof and the benefits for getting the community involved, showed clear as day. Everyone involved who volunteered their time or services did the community of St. Cloud a great service for these young warriors and should be extremely proud of what all they accomplished.

I live in Westwego, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. Our little city measures one (1) square mile in diameter. That's it. Just one mile. History has it that Westwego was founded in 1870 by the Texas & Pacific Railroad when it placed a railroad yard and docks on the Mississippi River just above the canal linking the river to Bayou Segnette, Bayou Lafourche and then to the Gulf of Mexico. Many of Westwego's early residents were fishermen, shrimpers, oystermen and trappers, so it's no surprise that there are many boat owners in our little City. But within that one mile are an incredible number of classic car collectors. I am constantly amazed by how many of our residents have at least one, and in some cases, many more than one, classic vehicle under their care. Our '52 Chevy Styleline, “The Turtle,” is one of the most recent in the neighborhood.
Yet another neighbor and his wife, Ronald & Clarice Gervais, are very proud of their Streetrod. I see Ronald out tooling around in it quite often. What's the point of having one of these wonderful cars if you don't get out and enjoy them? Well, in March, Ronald and Clarice participated in a fundraiser car show for a fallen Westwego Police Officer. They parked next to another Westwegan and his shiny, yellow Comet Caliente. Conversation started and, before the day was done, a deal was made and the Comet moved across town to a new home. Ronald said he's known the Comet all its life and its history and condition were too good to pass up! I guess he has a small case of that CCD, too.
One of our neighbors has a beautiful, fully restored 1952 Buick. He stopped by to visit one day when he saw The Turtle out front. We talked quite a bit and he told me that he now has only 6 classic cars but that he had as many as 12 at one time. He described his classic car obsession as a “sickness.” He has CLASSIC CAR DISEASE (CCD). He said it just kind of takes him over and he can't stop himself from buying another one when he sees a beautifully restored vehicle that brings him back to times long gone and memories he treasures. I guess that's what this CCD really is about memories and saving those memories one car or truck at a time. One of our other neighbors, Ted Munch, has a 1926 Model T and several other antique classic cars. I've spotted him bidding at Vicari's auctions from time to time. He says that he buys what he believes will be worth more when, and if, he decides to sell it. He doesn't have enough garage space at his house, so a few of his treasures are in garages of friends and family members around town. Don't let him tell you otherwise - he has CCD, too! I’m coming to understand that this Classic Car Disease is hard to fight and, my husband, Charlie, and brother, Herb, haven’t been vaccinated against it. They are constantly checking out other cars and scheming how to convince me to let them bring home another one. Charlie is itching for another ’40s or ‘50s model and Herb is lusting after a ‘70s muscle car. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get infected with CCD myself someday. Until I do, I know where they are while suffering their symptoms - in the driveway working on an engine, peeking under a hood, or at a car show – and, if I’m lucky, I’m right there beside them!

Jimbo, I copied this from my Readers Digest. I thought your readers could relate to this story. I know I can…. Years ago, my elderly neighbor mentioned she had been trying to locate a cricket that had found its way into her house. After several attempts to find it, she gave up, and her husband named the cricket Jimmy. The pair began talking to him whenever he chirped. We were having coffee in her kitchen one day when the chirping began. Her husband introduced me to their new friend. That’s when I had to tell them that their smoke detector needed new batteries. Karen Autenrieth, San Antonio, Tx Sent in by; staythere@ Jimbo, Yesterday morning I bought two six packs of beer on sale at the Liquor Store. I placed them on the front seat of the car and headed back home. I stopped at the service station where a drop-dead gorgeous, almost blonde was filling up her car at the next pump. It was very warm and she was wearing tight shorts and a light top which was wide open. She glanced at the beer, bent over and knocked on my passenger window. With her bra-less breasts almost falling out of her skimpy top she said, in a sexy voice, "I'm a big believer in barter, old fellow, would you be interested in trading sex for beer?" I thought for a few seconds and asked, "What kind of beer you got?" giff1500@

New King of South MS Car Shows There is a new King in South Mississippi Classic Car Shows (besides Cruising The Coast of course)…the 6th annual Red Creek Classic Car Appreciation Picnic at Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins, MS. The NSRA and several car clubs helped to push this show to the top. Saturday July 22 was a beautiful day and with all the rain we’ve had this summer in South Mississippi, a pretty day really stuck out. I loaded up the Hot Rod Show golf cart and headed to one of my favorite summer close by get aways…Flint Creek Water Park in Wiggins, MS. Flint Creek is a great place, the park is comprised of 1900 total acres and features a 650-acre lake with 13 miles of shoreline stocked with bass, bream, crappie and catfish offering excellent fishing 24-hours a day. The lake is also a favorite for boating, water skiing and swimming. Aluminum boat rentals are available. A new water park, Splash of Fun, is set to open soon on the property of Flint Creek. All these features also make Flint Creek a wonderful place for a car show. You can also tell the employees of the park enjoy the show by the big smiles on their faces as we drive in. The Appreciation Day Picnic is a family affair, coolers and popups are welcome. As I pulled in to the car show area the banks of the lake was full of beautiful colors and cars. This year Charlie Farmer said the car count was 350-400 classic cars. Cruisers came from Alabama, Louisiana, Florida and Mississippi. This is a free show and the Red Creek Classic Car Club feeds everyone and boy how do they feed you. This year the Red Creek Classics cooked 480 hamburgers, 300 hotdogs, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, potato chips, cakes, pies, peach cobbler, tea, soft drinks and so much more. There was so much food. Everyone lined up out the door and around the building. It’s amazing how quick the Red Creek Classics can get over a thousand people fed. After lunch you had to find a good shade tree for a nap with a full stomach. The club has 52 members; about 40 members worked the event along with other car clubs jumping in to lend their support. The food was served in an air conditioned building in the picnic area of the park and dining tables were set up under a big tent. Chicken Willie, Jerry Cuevas and Donna Holland manned the NSRA booth where you could check in, join or re-new your NSRA membership and get your car safety inspected.

Great 50’s, 60’s and 70’s music, lots of door prizes and the 50/50 was over $2000. According to Farmer…Flint Creek Water Park has really stepped up and a ton of sponsors helped to make it a great event. Farmer went on to say he wanted to thank all the area car clubs that pitched in to help and they are already working on next year’s show to make it even bigger and better. I talked with quite a few cruisers that made it a weekend in the park camping with their RV and their classic car. (talking about good looking campsites!) Flint Creek is just a beautiful place to spend a summer day with the family. Not in Gulfport or Biloxi, but the new King of The Hill when it comes to classic car events in South Mississippi is The Red Creek Classics Appreciation Day Picnic with the NSRA at Flint Creek held each July! Next year’s show dates are Friday and Saturday July 27 and 28. Go ahead and pencil those dates into your calendar. It’s a must do car show!

July 22nd was the 6th Annual Red Creek Classic Car Club Picnic & NSRA Appreciation Day, at the Flint Creek Water Park. There were over 300 cars that cruised in, even with the early morning showers. The Red Creek Classic Car Club hosted this event. The food was all free and there was plenty, if anyone left hungry it was your own fault. Later in the evening everyone had watermelon, home grown by Charlie Farmer, they were yummy. After that we had Birthday Cake to celebrate Chicken Willies 83rd Birthday. The Red Creek Classic Car Club gave away a 50/50 of over a thousand dollars. Silent auction was a success with some neat things up for bid. I gave three NSRA Merit awards. This award is for excellence in construction, design and safety of their vehicle, exhibiting the quality of a dedicated Rodder by participating in a activity and operating their vehicle in a safe manner. The three I picked to give the award
to are, Vikki Marvil in her 1941 Ford coupe, Tommy Price in his 1971 Chevy truck and Don Rumery in his 1932 Ford 5 Window coupe. Chicken Willie picked a 1941 Willis Coupe. We also handed Appreciation pins.

The safety of your street rod is of vital importance. If the street rod does not meet a certain set of guidelines, an accident can cause more than just replacing the parts. The NSRA or National Street Rod Association is the organization doing the safety inspections. Keep in mind that these safety inspections are completely voluntary. In most cases, safety inspections can be done at many of the street rod shows around the country. Generally, when a safety inspection is done, it is good for one year.

As y’all know I have several friends that will be going to SEMA this year. I'm very happy and proud of them all. It takes hard work and commitment to get this far. YET....y’all know I have love for a well built Rat Rod, and with only 2 months left to SEMA 2017 I find myself getting excited about all the final touches for these pieces of art. Some would call them RAT RODS, others would call them "radical rods". Either way... I look at it as a craft that is becoming a lost art". When you stop and break down what it takes to build a road worthy RAT ROD. It takes skill, knowledge, and a talent for this type of build. Nobody knows that better then my friends from the Flamin 8' Speed Shop. Supporting friends like friends should, I’ve been keeping in touch with Jeramie and Josh, making sure they are on track and ready to hit the road to SEMA this year. They invited me out for a visit, to check out the place and all they have going on. So I took them up on the offer and headed to Wisconsin. After a long drive, between corn fields and black top, I found myself in a little town called Menomonie, Wisconsin. Jeramie and Josh were able to slow down long enough to go grab some lunch from a neat little pub in town. Then ice-cream on the patio, beside a theater built in 1889. After lunch we headed back to the Flamin' 8 Speed Shop to see all that was going on with the build. Sponsorship is an important part of getting to SEMA and the Flamin’ 8 crew has teamed up with a few sponsors to help them along this journey. I had the pleasure to meet one of the proud sponsors as Jeramie and his team went to pick up the motor for the build off going to SEMA. I met the owner of Baxter Engines, Gary Baxter. Gary told me, as we toured his machine shop, he has been in the same location for over 20 years. Gary said “once I saw someone build a motor and I thought I could do it better, so I’ve been doing it now for 20 years.” Baxter Engines works mostly on tractor equipment, but Gary said he enjoys this different type of project. Teaming up with Jeramie and his Flamin’ 8 team, as well as sending a few other projects to SEMA this year, is something he is very proud to be apart of. With other team members and Stan and Nichole Siler, the owners of Black Sky Racing, standing by for the reveal. We all make our way to the back of the shop as Gary is showing us all the huge pistons, crank shafts, and machining equipment. Someone asked; “what-aya-do with the broken pistons!” Gary told them they are all in the dumpster out back. Now every Rat Rod builder knows you never pass up a chance to dumpster dive through a machine shops scrap pile. It was a site to see as all these grown men stood by anxiously awaiting Gary to allow them to go through the magic door. I felt like I was first in line on Black Friday Sale at Wal-Mart. As we stepped outside, you could see all the wheels turning in the heads of these artist, fabricator, and builders. Some left with a few broken items to make trophies out of, and some just cause they where cool. A few true Rat Roders in the bunch...I think so! Gary, was amused at the sight of it all, just as I was. I wish TEAM USA, best in the up coming weeks as they push to hit the road that will take them to SEMA 2017.

By Candy Cocktail Like our readers, I enjoy a fun day at the car show, taking time to observe and appreciate the features that make each car unique. One of my favorite details to spot are unusual tires and rims. I love seeing interesting little touches that I have never seen before. Like at the Reno Rockabilly Riot car show three years ago, which happened to be my first article with Gulf Coast MotorSports. There was a burgundy vintage Buick on spotless whitewall tires with small dice on each tire. I thought the dice were a wonderful little something extra! Plus they go perfectly with a pair of fuzzy dice handing from the rearview mirror.
I adore the look that retro whitewall tires give a classic car, but I had never seen the dice detail before. It was the perfect fit for a car show in a casino parking lot. Since then, I always look for car tires or rims with a little something extra, from dice to colored lights. Tires and rims can offer some distinctly unique and attractive details to make your favorite ride a crowd pleaser. In my opinion, whitewall tires were the first creation that really stood apart from all tires before: Whitewall tires are tires having a stripe or entire sidewall of white rubber. These tires were most commonly used from the early 1900s to around the mid 1970s. According to Wikipedia, the first use of the whitewall rubber for wheels has been traced to a small tire company in Chicago called Vogue Tyre and Rubber Company that
22
SEPTEMBER 2017
made them for their horse and chauffeur drawn carriages in 1914. Early automobile tires were made with various chemicals, the best of which was zinc oxide. Being a pure white substance, it not only increased traction, it also made the entire tire white. However, the white rubber did not offer sufficient endurance, so carbon black was added to the rubber to greatly increase tread life. Later, entirely black tires became available, with the white sidewalls being covered with a thin, black colored layer of rubber. So if a black sidewall tire was severely scuffed against a curb, the underlying white rubber would be revealed. During the late 1920s, the gleaming whitewalls that contrasted against the darker surroundings were considered a stylish, but high-maintenance feature. The popularity of whitewalls as an option increased during the 1930s. On April 6, 1934, Ford introduced whitewall tires as an $11.25 option on all its new cars. Wikipedia noted that the availability of whitewall tires was limited in the U.S. during the supply shortages of raw materials during World War II and the Korean War. Wide whitewall tires reached the height of their popularity in the early 1950s, but generally fell out of favor by 1962. During the mid-1960s variations on the striped whitewall began to appear; a red/white stripe combination was offered on Thunderbirds and other high-end Fords, and triple white stripe variations were offered on Cadillacs, Lincolns and Imperials. For shipping, new tires were wrapped in paper to keep the white stripe clean and for preventing the black of other tires from rubbing on the whitewall side. Throughout the 70s, single-sided whitewall tires became a hallmark of traditional luxury. Made by Vogue Tyre, they featured a narrow whitewall with a thin gold stripe line toward the edge of the tire and were most often fitted to luxury cars. The white stripes on tires became narrower as the 1960s progressed. Redline tires were commonly fitted on performance cars in the late 1960s. Thanks to the resurgence of whitewall tires for modified car culture, they are still manufactured in original bias-ply or radial form by specialty outlets such as Coker Tire and Vouge Tyre. In addition to inventing the whitewall tire, Vogue Tyre and Rubber Company patented the gold stripe in the 1960s. Providing custom high-end luxury tires for the last 100 years, Vogue Tyre has provided custom built tires to professional sports players and movie celebrities like Gary Cooper, Marion Davies, Mervyn LeRoy, Dolores Del RĂo, Paul Whiteman, Kid Rock and Snoop Dogg.
Crookedbrains.net features photos of some of the most creative rims from around the world; from custom baby pink wheels on a breast cancer awareness Harley Davidson to rims with teddy bears or PAC man, rimless wheels, glow in the dark wheels, vinyl stickers or spray painted rims displaying detailed artwork and transparent rims made from polycarbonate with a glass-like finish, costing about $5,000 per wheel.
www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com
For some other interesting types of tires, Michelin had an innovative self-inflating airless tire design that does not use any air. There are self-inflating tire systems that use a peristaltic pump to automatically inflate the tire as it turns, maintaining a constant pressure level.
Another of my personal favorites, these jeweled rims from Asanti, will cost you $325,446 for 4 units (one set). (Photo) These roulette rims are my absolute favorite! Shown at SEMA 2007, these unique wheel rims created by Lenso feature a real Louis Vuitton leather center cap and chrome accents. (Pictured)
There are fully programmable high-tech rims that can display any image or text on each wheel individually or all 4 wheels at the same time as you drive. (Pictured)
In groovy 1961, Goodyear experimented briefly with tires that lit up in a variety of colors. The tires did not just glow, instead they illuminated like a lamp. Made from a single piece of synthetic rubber and 18 tiny light bulbs mounted inside the wheel rim, breakable glass inside the inflatable tires was not the best of ideas. According to LIFE Magazine, it was one of the 30 dumbest inventions, asking if they came up with it so that women could adjust their stockings at night.
For practical modern day glowing tires, get spinning with glow LED valve stem tire lights. These LED lights create a ring around your tire. LED Tire Lights screw onto the valve stem of your car, bicycles or motorcycle in seconds. Motion activated, these tire glow lights flash making a flashing ring around your wheel when driving. There are such a varied array of rims and tires available to make your car a unique work of art. With details that every car lover will appreciate,

Barbers MotorSports Park sits atop 740 acres, and you could tell every part of this state of the art museum was created with a lot of thought and craftsmanship. As you open the door you walk into one of the biggest collections I have ever seen in one place, by the same collector. An open loft feeling through the maze of concrete. that spiraled from the first floor to the fifth floor. There are floor to ceiling glass walls that look out onto the track, showcasing the beautiful grounds. A huge elevator right in the center of it all, and riding on top of the elevator was a mock up Indy car. It was a very unique collection I have to say. It wasn't just the love Mr. Barbers has for motorcycles, that is on display like art work on every floor of this stunning building. One art piece was the break down of the inside of a Indy car. I found this to be very interesting. Just like the board track race display that showed you just how dangerous this type of racing really was. Board track racing was a type of motorsport popular in the United States during the 1910s and 1920s. We walked the well manicured grounds, there were all types of art from local artist lining the edges of the landscape. As our walking tour ended from the path surrounding the track. Our guide told us that Barber is also the home of the North American Porsche Driving School, and we might see a few cars hit the track today! We were able to walk on the 2 bridges that cross over the track. These bridges have a state of the art glass floor, they tell me its stronger then steel. (sure)... I then hear the roaring of a car from a distance and it was heading our way. I slowly stood on the edge of the glass floor as he raced by. I couldn't pass up the chance to see it for myself, and I was not disappointed. I was honored to visit the collection of a man that has a passion for speed as well as art. I'm even more excited to be asked back for the... 2017 13th Annual Barber Vintage Festival - Friday, October 6, thru Sunday, October 8. Hosted by MILLER HIGH LIFE & Barber MotorSports...what a better place to enjoy the ‘high life’ then at Barbers Motorsports Park. The Barber Vintage Festival is a great way to celebrate the motorcycle and the motorcycle enthusiasm that we all share. Vintage motorcycles hitting the track as the weekend goes by. A huge swap meet on the grounds, that can help you locate that part you needed to get your latest project back on the road. A few other attractions that will take you back in time as well. Like the ol' time barber shop to give you a fresh shave and nice pompadour setting the tone a this event. Mix all that with the amazing music from Hot Rod Walt and the Psycho Devilles filling the air on Friday night. Oct. 6 live on the Miller High Life Stage at the Barber Vintage Festival. Let me tell ya.... I'm a HUGE fan personal, you will not want to miss getting to see these guys play live. They are the real deal, pick up a CD on your way of the door to enjoy on the ride home. They are that good! (trust me) You might of seen them on one of The Café Racer T.V shows as well as Caffeine and Octane T.V shows. You also don't want to miss Captain and Maybelle performing on Friday Oct - 6 & Saturday Oct 7....they are America's favorite Sideshow couple!! As seen on Americas got talent, They even have video at every Ripley's Believe It or Not Studio. This show will leave you covering your eyes, yet peeping to see what really happens!! All this and much more sponsored by MILLER HIGH LIFE & Barber's MotorSports Park. Bring the whole family, enjoy the beautiful grounds, the museum, the swap meet, and all the entertainment. It’s sure to take you back in time to a memory or two from your child hood. And I'm sure I’ll make a few memories myself this weekend with my friends and family! See y'all at the track! XoXo

Fueled by Passion 1960s George Barber’s zeal for speed ignited his vision for today’s museum. Having raced Porsches in the 1960s, Barber held an impressive track record—63 first place wins. A thriving business executive, Barber rediscovered his motorsports passion in 1988 and began collecting and restoring classic cars. Shifting Gears 1988 Since the world’s best and largest car collections had already been established, Barber heeded some wise advice. His longtime friend Dave Hooper—a motorcycle enthusiast as well as the person who ran Barber's delivery fleet for 27 years—suggested that Barber shift his focus from cars to motorcycles. Being a man of big dreams, Barber seized the opportunity to accomplish what no one else had done... build the world’s “best and largest” motorcycle collection. 2-Wheeled Marvels 1991 To help jumpstart Barber’s collection, Hooper suggested a trio of Honda V-Fours. He then gifted Barber with two of his own motorcycles. One of these bikes—a rare, exquisitely detailed 1952 Victoria Bergmeister—instantly won Barber’s affection. The quest for more was on. Moving Works of Art 1994 That superb gift—the Bergmeister—inspired Barber. Marveling at the Bergmeister’s beauty, he appreciated motorcycles for much more than just fast machines. They were also works of art. He established the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum as a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation. The museum opened to the public at its original Southside Birmingham location in 1995. The Barber Museum collection showcased the engineering, balance, and unique design of each piece. On the Starting Line 1990s Along the way, Barber’s love for speed was not forgotten. The Barber staff excelled in conserving or restoring motorcycles to running condition, and, in some cases, to competition-ready shape. Having launched a race program to promote the collection, Barber also demonstrated to the world that this was a “living museum." To the Finish Line 1990s The Barber Racing Team first competed in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) series in 1992 in Daytona. The previously unknown team won premier races and created a buzz in the vintage motorcycle community. The team continued competing in the U.S. and Europe until 1998, bringing seven national championships back home to Birmingham. The World’s Stage 1997 A call from New York’s Guggenheim Museum in 1997 was a defining moment for the Barber Museum. Sending 21 bikes to exhibit at the original New York show, “The Art of the Motorcycle,” Barber continued to make the connection between motorsports and art. "The Art of the Motorcycle" exhibit also traveled to Chicago and Bilbao, Spain. “In Birmingham!” 1999 The thrill of the New York exhibit sparked a much bigger dream for Barber. “We can do this in Birmingham!” he maintained. Barber set out to create a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility. Going even further, he imagined a road course as well where the “living museum” quality of the collection could be demonstrated. No Ordinary Racetrack 2003 A sprawling Birmingham landscape was required to accommodate the large scale of Barber's dream. Consulting with world champion racers John Surtees and Dan Gurney, uncommon precision drove the design of the complex. In September 2003, the 830-acre park, with its world-class 16-turn, 2.38 mile racetrack, opened to the public. The track is home to the Porsche Sport Driving School, and numerous automakers have chosen the park as their stage for vehicle debuts and to film commercials. Continuing to Evolve 2014 The Barber Proving Grounds were built adjacent to the racetrack and consist of a track area, which can be converted to various layouts, along with a wet/dry skidpad. The proving grounds allow users to demonstrate vehicle capabilities such as accident avoidance, braking, turning, and acceleration. Mercedes Benz began using the grounds for
their employees’ “Brand Immersion Experience” in October. Other uses for the proving grounds include product debuts, kart racing, driving schools, and safety instruction. An Extraordinary Museum Today with its creative architecture and great attention to detail, the museum is home to over 1,400 motorcycles that span over 100 years of production. More than 650 bikes can be seen on any given day, and 200 different manufacturers from 20 countries are represented in the collection—from Harley-Davidson, Honda, and Indian—to Showa, DSK, and Cagiva. Exquisite Cars Today In his passion for motorcycles, George Barber’s love of cars has remained powerful. The museum features the world’s most extensive Lotus collection, anchored by the Lotus 21. The museum also displays rare racecars, including the 1964 Ferrari F-158, in which John Surtees won the 1964 Formula 1 Driver's World Championship World-Renowned Destination The museum drew 270,000 visitors last year, including more than 3,000 visitors from other countries. In April 2014, Barber was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world's largest motorcycle collection. History Lives On As the collection continues to grow, the museum's story continues as well. In its commitment to preserving the history of motorsports, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is excited about the future. Barber says he wants "to use the museum as a tool to help bring more people to Birmingham." Being dedicated to interpreting and exhibiting motorcycles and vintage vehicles, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is a destination that is truly amazing. Simply an Amazing Park for Racers and Fans. Spanning 880-acres, Barber Motorsports Park features a world-class racetrack and museum and is home to a dynamic schedule of major events each year. The acclaimed park opened to the public in 2003. The Barber Museum showcases an extraordinary selection of both motorcycles and racecars. With more than 1,500 motorcycles— representing 100 years of production from 20 countries—it has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest motorcycle collection. The museum also includes notable racecars such as the Ferrari F-158 driven by Englishman John Surtees in the 1964 Grand Prix World Championship, plus the world’s most extensive assembly of Lotus cars. The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama is one of the internationally prestigious annual events at the park, presenting open-wheel racing with the fastest cars and most versatile drivers in the world. This event is part of the IndyCar Series, which is crowned by the Indianapolis 500. Barber’s 16-turn, 2.38 mile track was designed in consultation with world champion racers John Surtees and Dan Gurney. The track is home to the Porsche Sport Driving School, and a number of automakers have chosen the park for new vehicle debuts. The annual Barber Vintage Festival, presented by the Triumph Dealers of North America, features amazing motorcycles and a wide array of activities for motorcycle enthusiasts. Barber’s annual racing schedule includes NASA, WERA, and SCCA program events, plus a variety of Track Days.

The Annual Barber Vintage Festival With 2017 marking its 13th year, the Barber Vintage Festival is one of the most highly anticipated motorcycle events in the world. This year's event takes place October 6-8. At the Barber Vintage Festival, tens of thousands of motorcycles, riders, and enthusiasts make the pilgrimage to the 880-acre Barber Motorsports Park. Featured in the beautiful park on Vintage Festival weekend is a huge swap meet with hundreds of vendors, motorcycle gatherings and shows, food and drinks, entertainment, stunt shows, and much more. The 228,650square-foot Barber Museum, prominently located at the park, features extended hours during the three-day event. The museum hosts seminars put on by some of the industry's most knowledgeable and interesting people. The restoration level of the museum is open to guests who've purchased admission to the museum, as is the museum's new expansion that opened to the public in April 2017, and seminars are first-come, first served. About the Barber Museum The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is a 501(c)(3) Not for Profit Foundation located at the 880-acre Barber Motorsports Park, in Birmingham, Alabama, dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, exhibition, and history of motorcycles, vintage vehicles, and motorsports. Over the course of the past decade, the Barber Museum has brought people from around the world to Alabama, and it has been named the #1 tourist attraction in Birmingham. Last year, the museum and park saw 260,670 guests. The Barber Museum is the home of the world's largest motorcycle collection, currently with more than 1,600 motorcycles, and it is widely known for its collection of vintage Lotus racecars and other rare vehicles. Each year it hosts vintage motorcycle and vintage racecar events. The Barber Vintage Festival, now in its 13th consecutive year, is a celebration of vintage (and modern) motorcycles and their riders. Each year the event attracts increasingly larger numbers of fans, with last year's three-day festival weekend drawing 73,541 people. This year's Vintage Festival is set for October 6-8, 2017. Monster Energy Stunt Show The best way to describe us is just KSFMX Freestyle Motocross show. Freestyle motocross (also known as FMX) is a variation on the sport of motocross in which motorcycle riders impress Crowds with doing tricks while jumping 75' and 30' in the air.
The American Motor Drome Company's "Wall of Death", gives you a glimpse into the century-old sport of board track racing. Spectators stand on a platform that circles a 15-foot-high wooden "bowl", inches away from the motor drome's daredevils riding their vintage Indian and antique Harley-Davidson motorcycles around and around the vertical track.
Plenty of Things to Enjoy! The Annual Barber Vintage Festival is one of the most highly anticipated motorcycle events in the world. The three-day festival features the America's First Fan Zone with food and entertainment, Ace Corner, a Century Parade, a swap meet with hundreds of vendors selling vintage motorcycles and parts, as well as the AMCA and VJMC gatherings, and the Motorcycle Classics show. Read about these attractions - and more - below. Don’t forget… the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum features extended hours as well as seminars during the 13th Annual Barber Vintage Festival Presented by the Triumph Dealers of North America. So when you’re not in the park, be sure to check out what’s going on in the museum!
Century Parade Keeping with the Barber Motorsports spirit of providing you with “living” history, the Lap of the Century features bikes built in 1914 and earlier. These are not bikes that collect dust in the garage—they’re part of history that keeps moving forward!
Built back in 1912 by Jose Urias, the Globe of Death is a 16-foot-wide sphere made of metal and mesh. For generations, members of the Urias family have ridden their dirt bikes inside the globe at speeds of up to 60mph. Don't miss this opportunity to see these motorcycling "daredevils" perform some truly extraordinary stunts!
This dynamic duo has appeared at Ripley's Believe It or Not!, on "America's Got Talent" Season 6, Six Flags Over Georgia's Annual Fright Fest, "Atlanta & Co.", "The Soup", Coney Island's Sideshows by the Seashore and more!

“Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge’s table, asking for directions to the Coors Light truck, when the call came in… I was assured by the other two judges (Native Texans) that the chili wouldn’t be all that spicy; and, besides, they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, so I accepted and became Judge 3.” Here are the scorecard notes from the event: CHILI #1 – MIKE’S MANIAC MONSTER CHILI Judge # 1 — A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick. Judge # 2 — Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild. Judge # 3 (Frank) — Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that’s the worst one. These New Mexicans are crazy. CHILI #2 – EL RANCHO’S AFTERBURNER CHILI Judge # 1 — Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang. Judge # 2 — Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously. Judge # 3 — Keep this out of the reach of children. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.
CHILI # 7 – SUSAN’S SCREAMING SENSATION CHILI Judge # 1 — A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers. Judge # 2 — Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment **I should take note that I am worried about Judge #3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably. Judge # 3 — You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn’t feel a thing. I’ve lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they’ll know what killed me. I’ve decided to stop breathing. It’s too painful. I’m not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I’ll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach. CHILI # 8 – BIG TOM’S TOENAIL CURLING CHILI Judge # 1 — The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence. Judge # 2 — This final entry is a good, balanced chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he’s going to make it. Poor fella, wonder how he’d have reacted to really hot chili? Judge # 3 — No report.
CHILI # 3 – ALFREDO’S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN CHILI Judge # 1 — Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick. Judge # 2 — A bit salty, good use of peppers. Judge # 3 — Call the EPA. I’ve located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I’m getting red-faced from all of the beer. CHILI # 4 – BUBBA’S BLACK MAGIC Judge # 1 — Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing. Judge # 2 — Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili. Judge # 3 — I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This 300 lb. Woman is starting to look HOT … Just like this nuclear waste I’m eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac? CHILI # 5 – LISA’S LEGAL LIP REMOVER Judge # 1 — Meaty, strong chili. Jalapeno peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive. Judge # 2 — Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the jalapeno peppers make a strong statement. Judge # 3 — My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I’m burning my lips off. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. CHILI # 6 – VARGA’S VERY VEGETARIAN VARIETY Judge # 1 — Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers. Judge # 2 — The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb. Judge # 3 — My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted, and I’m worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Sally. Can’t feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.
