CENTRAL LUZON

THE STORY OF MY HOME, MY PLANET By: CARMELA T. PEREZ Master Teacher 1 TIBAG HIGH SCHOOL Massive flood. Deforestation. Drought. Unexplained Health Problems. Our senses have brought us to global climate change that emerged as the greatest threat facing humankind today. Our environment is extremely suffering. Almost all ecosystem, society and economy are in danger. We are now facing serios impacts such as extreme whether events, floods, erratic rainfall and sea level rise, which leads to food shortages, infrastructure damage and the degradation of natural resources. We are now facing the midst of global warming, greenhouse effects, acid rain the thinning of the ozone layer. Our senses have brought us to global climate change which emerged as the greatest threat facing humankind today. The issue on climate change is now widely recognized as one major challenge for mankind in the 21st century. According to the experts,it is expected that the sea level is rising at about .05 meters every 50 years. I could not imagine where i am or rather where are we during those critical years. It might be a nightmare that Philippines will be totally erased from the map. Of all the dramatic consequences of our delayed reactions and a pathetic reactions,we can no longer say well at least it wont happen in my lifetime. I’m just an ordinary teacher who hopes that maybe I can make a difference. I would be lying if i said I dont have worries about the future. The deadline is drawing nearer. What can we possibly do to help stop global warming? How do we solve a problem that seems too large to tackle and understand? We all hyeard about the global warming blaring from our tv sets and radios...we have read numerous web pages and newspaper. Ladies and gentlemen, our HOME,our Planet is at risk. In analogy, whether is the stroy and our climate is the climax. Climatic news comes to us in a surprised: Thousands die of extreme heat. As the twenty-first century dawned, carbon dioxide levels were rising in the atmosphere more rapidly. Rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere could threaten the health of many organisms. Global warming causes thermal expansion which actually hasten the melting of ice caps on the upper part of our home. Changing climate may also cause the whether to become more extreme,be it drought or violent storm and heavy rain. Extreme change in temperature makes people suffer breathing difficulties, headaches, and body rashes and other illness. These are the different scenarios that we are creating with our planet Earth. An ecological disaster, such as world crop failure and collapse of ecosystem could be induced by the present trends of overpopulation, economic development and non sustainable agriculture.Different episodes in the story are taking place such as deforestation, climate change, overfishing and massive air and water pollution might be the denouement. The ending might be a TRAGEDY! Aren’t you afraid? Well I SEE THE STORY ON PAGE 7

THE STORY from P.2 am! Before we look at we can do,it is important to note that big a u t o m o b i l e industries, refineries, commercial farmers and others are the main bodies with yhe highest carbon emissions. This is because we rely on them to provide products and food that we enjoy at home. This means if we reduce our reliance for these big industries, they wont’t have to produce more. And this is the conflict. WE want a comfortable and easy life but our environment is in danger. A good way to end our story is to solve the problem. Our government officials should regulate the big companies. We can choose efficient leaders to make laws that discourage activities that have high carbon footprints. Sad to say, many of our government leaders are disappointing.Instead of being the heros or heroines, they simply become puppet who turns to become the villains in our story. Obviously after the election, they close the book with their promise to protect the environment. I’m still hopeful that MY VOICE and MY WILL can be TOOLS to become STEWARD OF THE ENVIRONMENT.Ladies and gentlemen. We can still do something to help our planet earth. You and I are responsible in taking care of mother earth. I stand before you today with the great courage that we can be all steward of the environment. Let us start within our selves. Tree planting activities will be effective if we put our heart in the particular activity. If we plant,we must see to it that it will grow. Many public schools now like my school require the students to learn Education for S u s t a i n a b l e Development, recycling and

other issues affecting our communities and natural resources. Teachers are involving students in educational programs to help student understand what

environment is,why we need to protect it and what we can do.We can also participate in environmental projects that help reinforce the concepts taught by teachers in our own houses.

I can’t yet put a conclusion to my story without your help. The good ending depends on you and me with our covenant to become a good steward of the environment.
