Brief | To develop concepts based on ‘Health In The City’ as a theme. The project was broken into two stages: Concept and Design. We were to consider past, present and future contexts in our projects. Response | To purify water from the River Thames and rain water to create free drinking water for the entire city. This was inspired by the basic nutrition of water and the potential of increased efficiency from the whole city being subject to that. Past: My idea was to be implemented in the locations of historic Victorian wells around London. The concept references the historic use of rivers in settlements, which was for drinking, cleaning and feeding crops. This is then put into its 21st century context; The Water, the Land and The City. Present: My design was the first of the wells, at Blackfriars. It was physically manifested as a public space with fountains, wells and waterfalls for the public’s recreation and health. Future: Eventually the site of each historic well would have a similar space that not only provides drinking water but nutrition from hydroponic plantations. Canals would connect all the sites, visually guiding the public to the spaces. The fully realised idea would be a city where all basic nutrition is provided for free. With the increased efficiency from the nutrition the idea would be able to expand in further future contexts. This project was a medium for me to present my societal ideas in an indirect fashion. To present my concept I produced a short film: https://vimeo.com/61038174

Mouth of the River Sheaf
Site Plan
Education Space
Roof Plan Site Section Brief | To design a conservation centre that is contextually and environmentally responsible along the River Don. Response | I chose the Castle Market site because of the opportunity to reverse the negative impact on the area following the relocation of the markets. My project aimed to achieve this by reopening the River Sheaf and improving the local ecosystem. The wildlife conservation centre sits at the centre of the site with green space around it. The centre houses and protects the endangered species of the local ecosystem in a enclosed floating structure on the Sheaf. It uses the river water to hold fish and other marine species. Fishing techniques are used to raise the endangered species before they are released into the Don to rejuvenate the food chain. The buildings surrounding this are for public use and education. Flexible market and workshop spaces for local trades and retailers are provided in the remaining parts of the market. This project gives positive social, environmental and urban impact on the area though a much-needed urban centre point for this historic city centre.

Debating Chamber
Brief | To design a civic building in Fitzalan Square, which contains a debating chamber for local people to discus civic matters. Response | To create a platform for the public to voice their opinions and ideas, which develop the city culturally, economically and socially. Workshops and studios on the upper floors allow members of the public to create their ideas and the debating chamber allows them to present them. The scheme encourages the public to enter the debating chamber through pedestrianisation of the square and by the positioning of a public resource pavilion in the square. This layout directs people in the debating chamber towards the external public space, and vice versa, creating an architectural relationship between the two. The building was designed in an environmentally considerate way, with passively heated spaces, responsibly sourced materials, solar shading and renewable energy displayed in the square. The ground floor is used to house offices and a cafĂŠ, to create active frontages that counter the cash converters and betting shops. This building will start the gradual urban change to an active public square.

Route to Bukit Gumantong
Site Plan
Truss Design
Sloping Wall Foundations
Brief | To design and build a rest house for the Rungus community on top of Bukit Gumantong. The rest house is a shelter for visitors and locals to use when hiking up Gumantong hill. Response | Our team of architects and designers worked with the Rungus community to produce a contextually sensitive rest house. This was achieved by using locally sourced materials and local construction methods. The design used appropriate architectural language by mimicking that of a longhouse, a traditional accommodation type in Sabah. The site was chosen because it was an open space close to the summit of the hill. We only used dead trees for construction to show the tribe that we respected their protected forest. The building is a very flexible space providing communal spaces and private spaces. This division came from the local culture, where males sleep in the communal spaces and the females in private spaces, and we aimed to respect that. There is an ever-growing problem of young members of the tribe losing interest in their culture and heritage. The project addresses this as schools will take students to the The Gathering Place where they will learn about Rungus traditions and culture. The overall experience was a huge step in my education and my understanding of what I want my role to be in the future. As part of our presentation I made a film of the camp. Watch it here: https://vimeo.com/141191470

Brief | To design a new gym and classes space over an existing gym to the back of Stokewood Leisure Centre. The client, Bournemouth Council, appointed Footprint Architects to design the new gym, by working with a building consultancy, M and E and structural engineers. The existing building is locally listed and is located in a residential area. Response | A large modular designed flexible gym space, enabling areas to be segregated by the movement of internal partitions. The extension is clad in burnt timber with varying widths. This use of timber was inspired by the density, form and setting of the pine trees on site. The extension’s varied cladding mimics the pine trees. It has less dense parts around windows to let light in and reduce views out. The charred timber comes from the idea: to ‘stoke’ wood, whilst simultaneously referencing a historic fire that burnt down the original buildings before they were replaced. Overall the design aims to create modern gym facilities to enable the centre to remain competitive in today’s market. This project gave me an insight into a conceptual and aesthetic approach to design.

Brief | To design a set of simple, sustainable and affordable houses. Response | I put together a Building Regulations package including construction details, electrical layouts, sanitary layouts and site setting out. In addition to this an outline specification. This project saw me develop my knowledge in construction, client and consultant liaison and detailed design. These drawings were produced in my first use of BIM software. Following approval I will also be producing construction drawings.
