“Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody. Jane Jacobs The Death and Life of Great American Cities

new everest CONCEPT The inaccessible city at new heights above the highest point on earth.. A society with the perfect balance. 99/1 is the social equilibrium. DESCRIPTION Man has now developed beyond its existing cities. This is a groundless world, above the earth we where the upper classes now live separated from the people below. New Everest is built around intelligent infrastructure which creates the opportunity for rapid development. For this to work the upper class becomes second to Artificial Intelligence. All are monitored by a satellite above. This vertical living is constantly growing, maximising production of capital. The complexity of the city is to show the constant struggle of its people keeping up with the forever growing infrastructure. This references the machines power over the workers in Metropolis (1927). This is a competition between the upper class and the infrastructure. A metaphor for the capitalist struggle to stay afloat (represented physically). The story of the drawing is the lower classes on a journey towards New Everest. Little do they know that it is an unreachable city. The gap between the city and the Everest’s peak is just big enough to stop them. This is a critique of the idealised view of neoliberalism (represented in the new world), it points out the visible issue of the American Dream (shown in the idealistic imagery). The ‘boat’ contains extracts of social and spatial issues consequential to the neoliberal agenda. The passengers are expressed in colour to show their naivety towards the american dream. Through closer inspection one can see that the new world does not touch the mountain. The point is that, from afar the world looks accessible. The modernist and postmodernist ideologies that facilitated the creation of New Everest are placed at the back of the boat.

SATELLITE The satellite has the highest view of the new and old worlds. It oversees their peoples. It acts as the all seeing eye, surveilling all situations. Controlling the social hierarchy to maintain the 99/1 social equilibrium. HELICOPTERS The helicopters are restricted to LEVEL 02 and above. They give new world’s citizens an amazing view overlooking the beautiful views of the old world favelas. Tourist tours are available with guides. Remember consuming keeps us high in the sky. DRONES The drones police the world making sure people stay in their rank. LIFT The litts take the citizens to the next level as the structure grows. Their levels are limited depending on your social class. SKYSCRAPER Are throughout the city with people building higher to get closer to the top. HOUSING The city allows for elevated living. SKYWALK The infrastructure creates walkways to all over. FAVELAS The favelas take the form of the compartments in the boat. Each expressing a social issue.

THE EXPLORATIONIST MANIFESTO EXPLORE SPACE ENGAGE SENSES listen and watch the street combine sound and vision hijack and appropriate spacE This is a methodology developed around social space and all it encompasses. Explorationists should experience and produce situations through direct action. We encourage physical solutions to social issues. There is no architecture or architect only time, space and situations. Since cities are defined by their people, then the space we are exploring is social space. This methodology will give explorationists spatial awareness in a social sense. This methodology will create a political agenda within the exposed. The situationists want you to drift, we want to create something to drift towards. Since people are what define a city, then we are not exploring a network of streets, but a network of people. Therefore, to understand a city you must first understand its people. To understand its people we first must communicate. This is culture. People’s common ground and connection. Art is the manifestation of culture. Therefore, we must absorb and create the artistic expressions of the city. What better place to start than Jazz, the archetypal sound of the oppressed. In this world non emotionally expressive mediums are effectively obsolete. They do not quantify social data. It is not profound or connected to its creator. Bureaucratic and political systems cannot communicate social injustice. They dehumanise society. Explorationists should only record expressive mediums.

“Space is a social morphology: it is to lived experience what form itself is to the living organism, and just as Intimately bound up with function and Structure lefebvre 1991
