Long Leash On Life Donates 200,000+ Pounds of Cat & Dog Food What exactly does 200,000+pounds

of cat and dog food look like?

In this case, it equates to more than 100 tons of pet food to fortify the supply for thousands of homeless dogs and cats. On November 30, 2017, Long Leash On Life (LLOL) distributed their 3rd Annual PAY IT PET-WARD food donation. For the third year in a row, huge trucks filled their parking lot with all types of cat and dog food that was allocated to more than 45 deserving animal shelters, pet food banks and local rescue organizations. Each year, LLOL looks to recognize dedicated rescue organizations whose purpose is to benefit cats and dogs without permanent homes. At the same time, LLOL remembers those who may be less fortunate by supplying cat and dog food to pet parents with limited resources. It also gives LLOL a chance to give back to the community by donating cat and dog food to both rural and urban shelters in need. Most importantly, by donating this pet food all across New Mexico, LLOL is helping to free up money that these statewide organizations can then spend on spay and neuter, thereby helping cut down on both pet overpopulation and euthanasia rates.

and dog food in the amount of 175 twelve-hundred pound pallets, but for LLOL it was truly a labor of love. It is their hope this contribution will promote the well-being of our state’s homeless pets, while shaping an optimistic future for their adoption into forever homes, with the ultimate goal is to reduce euthanasia in New Mexico.

It took months of negotiating to achieve best prices on pet food for Long Leash On Life to amass cat

4 Tips

to Help Dry Skin in pets by lisa mckitrick

D

ry, flaky skin is a common problem for humans in this drought-ridden desert state, and dogs and cats suffer from it too. As unattractive as it may be, it’s not just a cosmetic concern, especially for our pets. Dry, itchy, irritated skin is more prone to bacterial and fungal infections, and also makes your pet more susceptible to parasites such as fleas and ticks. Here are some things you can do to combat dry skin in pets:

1

Feed a Good Quality Diet

Skin health and coat quality are often the first to suffer when a pet isn’t getting its nutritional needs met. Feeding an all-natural, species-appropriate diet made with quality animal-based proteins instead of cheap fillers will help ensure your pet is getting easily assimilated nutrients for building and maintaining supple skin and soft fur. Pet food ingredients to always avoid: corn, wheat, soy, by-products, unnamed meats, high fructose corn syrup and other added sugars, propylene glycol, BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and artificial preservatives.

2

Make Sure Your Pet Is Well Hydrated

Fresh water should always be available for your pet. Encourage drinking by placing multiple bowls around the house, and consider investing in a fountain to keep water as fresh and enticing as possible. Increase water intake by including highmoisture foods such as canned food, raw food, and rehydrated freeze-dried food in the diet. This is especially important for cats, who don’t have a strong thirst mechanism and can be subclinically dehydrated if fed only dry kibble. To increase skin hydration from the outside, consider investing in a humidifier for your home that both you and your pets can benefit from. While there are pros and cons to the various types of humidifiers available – cool-mist, steam, evaporative, or ultrasonic – it’s important to use only distilled water in your chosen humidifier and to clean the unit regularly to prevent harmful microorganisms and particulates from being dispersed into the air.

3

Supplement with Fish Oil

Fish oil helps to condition and moisturize the skin from the inside out. Omega-3 fatty acids are an important component of cell membranes, and strong cell membranes are needed to maintain the water content of cells and tissues. Please note that it is important to give your pets fish oils rather than plant-sourced oils (such as flax or olive) because dogs and cats do not efficiently convert the long-chain fatty acids in plant oils into the beneficial forms (DHA and EPA) they can utilize.

www.YourPetNM.com February / March 2018 At Your Pet Magazine our mission is to be the dog owner’s guide to information regarding events, lifestyles, trends, and wellness throughout the Albuquerque metro, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe areas. Your Pet Magazine is a free publication.

Look for pharmaceutical grade fish oils made specifically for pets since these will not contain dangerous levels of vitamin D, which is often added to fish oil products for humans. Additionally, pharmaceutical grade fish oils are virtually scentless and have been purified to remove potential environmental toxins, such as mercury, heavy metals, PCBs, and dioxins.

4

Be Gentle to Your Pet’s Skin

Use only gentle, all-natural shampoos and conditioners that are free of harsh chemicals and detergents, which can strip natural oils from the skin, leading to dryness and irritation. Look for products that contain natural moisturizers such as oatmeal, aloe, coconut oil, or neem. Too-frequent bathing can overdry the skin, so use grooming wipes or waterless shampoos to remove surface dirt from the coat as needed.

Visit Boofy’s Best for Pets for the natural pet foods, fish oils, supplements, and grooming products that can help keep your pet’s skin in top condition!

lap dog rescue Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico has been recovering, rehabilitating and rehoming small companion dogs for over 24 years.

Lap Dog Rescue works with a network of other rescue organizations, fosters, volunteers and veterinarians. “We don’t have a central kennel so we rely on our fosters to care for our dogs. We are always looking for more dedicated fosters. Our vets are terrific. We do around 600-700 spays/neuters annually and that number is constantly growing.”

President of Lap Dog Rescue, Brian Spence, and a team of dedicated volunteers are working 24/7 finding loving homes for small dogs in need. In 2017 Lap Dog Rescue rescued 719 dogs and adopted out 622. With 24 years of experience, Lap Dog Rescue has a very high success rate in matching small dogs to their own “forever” adoptive homes.

“We advocate for all breeds,” said Brian. “As we continue to grow, Lap Dog Rescue is always looking towards the future. Something that would be great is the possibility of a facility, one that is multi-use for the benefit of all rescue organizations, because we are all in this together.”

Future adopters can apply online to start the adoption process. “We are very concerned with finding the best match possible for our dogs. We are attentive to the adoptive families and look at this process as an adjustment in the lives of our dogs as well as the adoptive families lives.”

he mission of Enchantment Chihuahua Rescue is to rescue, nurture, rehabilitate, and relocate Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes into loving, permanent homes, as well as to raise public awareness of companion animal issues. Enchantment Chihuahua Rescue provides the state of New Mexico with the valuable service of providing homes for dogs without homes. New Mexico is a poor state with a vast amount of uninhabited land and a small population of 1.8 million people as per the 2008 census. Revenues to support are inadequate to meet the states needs in caring for abandoned dogs. Resources to accommodate the needs of abandoned dogs are often decreased to meet the “human” need.

Dog jogging!

J

ogging with your canine companion is a wonderful outdoor activity for you and your pet. Below are just a few common pointers to help you on your way. Have fun!

Know Your Dog All dog breeds are unique in their own way. Different breeds for different speeds. Some are made for running and well, some are not. One example, short-snouted dogs — pugs and bulldogs, are not as efficient at breathing and cannot cool down as well. Learn how your dog behaves, breathes and reacts to outdoor jogging. Siberian Huskys are born runners and other breeds may perform quite differently.

Your pet Magazine | February | March 2018

Check Your Dog Always examine your dog before, during and after your run for puncture thorns, burrs, ticks, and glass. Look inside the nose, their backside, paws, and all sides of your dog for any objects. If the terrain you will be exploring is really rough, put some boots on your dog’s paws, your dog will thank you. Positive training Bring treats along to reward good behavior. If you find the dog is leading too much, simply stop moving. While distracting to your run at first, gradually your dog will learn to behave, all the while remaining happy and comfortable.

H

ere are some useful tips to help get the job done.

First create a routine for your puppy or dog. Set up a feeding and watering schedule. Consisting of feeding and watering your dog two to three times daily. (Check with your vet for proper feeding instructions). Provide water after you exercise your dog. Free feeding is not recommended until your dog is completely housebroken.

Take your puppy out regularly every 2-3 hours. Take your puppy out first thing in the morning, walk them to the spot you want them to eliminate. If your puppy is very young carry them outside to make sure they don’t try to eliminate in the house. Take

12

Your pet Magazine | February | March 2018

your puppy out 20 minutes after each meal. Tell your puppy to “go potty” or whatever command you want to use while he is eliminating. The GOAL is for your puppy to eventually eliminate on command. Praise your puppy when he is done.

Supervision is the most important step in potty training. Use a leash on your puppy to keep them close to you. Catching them before they start to eliminate and getting them outside. Signs of elimination to look for are constant sniffing, spinning in a circle and squatting. If you catch your puppy eliminating in the house, startle him with a loud noise and pick him up, take him outside and walk him to his elimination spot. Catching your dog in action is very important part of the process of housebreaking.

Creating a management system for your puppy is a critical step in housebreaking. The management system is used for when your puppy cannot be supervised. Crate training is the most common management system. The crate should not be used as a punishment tool, but a way to contain the dog. Most puppies will be able to stay in a crate for their age in months plus one. An 8-week-old (2 months) should be able to stay in a crate for 3 hours without eliminating. This is a rule of thumb and every dog is different.

If your pet has an accident in the house, it is important to neutralize the spot with an enzymatic cleaner to completely get rid of the odor and proteins related to the urine.

Good Luck with your new puppy. Please call Sit Means Sit for any of your training needs.

Other housebreaking problems may exist, such as marking or submissive urination. Proper training coupled with supervision and management systems will eliminate these problems or minimize them. Submissive urination usually diminishes with training. This is caused by a sensitive dog with little confidence. When you start training the submissive dog has structure and guidance in his life and becomes more confident. The submissive urination starts to diminish. Marking, performed by male dogs is not a housebreaking issue. It is an issue related to instinctive behaviors. A dog lifting his leg to scent mark is not the same as having to go to the bathroom. Dogs use urine marking to show their dominance or to claim something belonging to them.

So, what is it like to own a horse?

I

by Jan Quigley | Photos courtesy of Jan Quigley

t is a slice of heaven to own a horse. Horses bring joy and contentment to your heart. Horses offer a partnership that requires a bond like no other bond. Once you and your horse know each other well and have easy communication between each other, riding is like a dance. One leads and one follows with pride, trust and respect. The challenge to get to that level of riding takes time, mutual respect and a commitment.

That memory is over twenty years old and still my heart smiles thinking of Feature. That is how horses impact your life by touching your heart and soul. To be honest, horses require time, hard work and often more money than most hobbies, but horses give back so much more than other hobbies in that the special bond is unique and lasts a life time. If you want to come close to heaven on this earth, then establish that special bond with your

Spending time with your horse is essential to establish that special bond. I have had the privilege to own several amazing horses that I have shared that unique bond with them. Sable, an Arabian mare was a horse purchased for another family member, but that did not work out between them. Sable preferred women riders and did not like the male companion. As I spent time with her, she seldom liked me either, but rather she tolerated me. As the years went on, Sable became my trusted partner and she tolerated my aggressive riding. She protected me in ways that I did not understand at the time, but later reflecting back, she protected me. Sable did not like other horses near her, so showing was not safe as she would try to kick or bit other horses if they pasted her in the show ring. Our arena riding was then limited to training level dressage shows where she did well. Dressage training level show allow only one horse in the arena at a time so, Sable did not have to deal with other horses around her. Hence Sable did her job and she won ribbons as we learned together. In my life time, I have been blessed to have been given several horses over the years. Yes, folks, free horses come into your life in amazing ways. My first free Arabian mare was named Feature and she was a Polish Arabian that had won many Arabian halter class championships. If you have ever seen a pure breed halter class, you can appreciate the mind set this mare had when she first came to my barn. Feature knew little of trail riding and getting her down the ditch was a challenge to say the least.
