ENSENADA HARBOR

ENSENADA, MEXICO

Ensenada is the first major port south of the U.S./ Mexico border — and it is only 65 nautical miles southeast of Point Loma Light, 8 miles northeast of Punta Banda and 100 miles northwest of San Quintín. For thousands of ocean cruisers and long-range anglers, Ensenada is the first official port of entry into Mexican waters. You can clear in here and perform your paperwork with a port captain and officials. Otherwise, the next ports of entry are farther south in Bahia Magdalena (Magdalena Bay) and Cabo San Lucas. Ensenada also makes an excellent vacation destination for West Coast boaters, often in preparation for more extensive cruising along Mexico’s 3,300-mile Pacific coastline.

SAN DIEGO BAY

San Diego is the last port in the Western United States for ships sailing south and the first port for ships sailing north. The atmosphere of this picturesque harbor is greatly enhanced by the fact that the weather is consistently mild. The bay is protected by a long peninsula, Point Loma, which hooks around the entrance to the bay, sheltering it from the ocean. Home to America’s Cup Harbor, San Diego Bay offers boaters a vast array of services and activities. There are numerous slips, marinas, moorings, boating-repair facilities and marine supply outlets. Fishing tackle and diving supply shops are abundant.

One of San Diego’s Most Desirable Locations

Home to the world’s largest year-round sportfishing fleet, San Diego offers enthusiasts a variety of fishing opportunities, from half-day trips to multi-day adventures. San Diego Bay is surrounded with a huge array of parks, restaurants, businesses and shopping opportunities to accommodate all types of boaters, from the recreational boater to the tourist who arrives on a cruise ship. Since the bay is an important port for the U.S. Navy, it is common to view enormous ships entering and leaving the harbor. Those who love maritime history will not want to miss visiting the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Housed aboard the tall ship, Star of India and the ferryboat Berkeley, it is located on the east end of the bay. Visitors can also find the California coast’s first lighthouse on Point Loma, built in 1855. Other points of historic interest along San Diego Bay include the community of Coronado — home of the worldfamous Hotel del Coronado, San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter in the downtown area and Old Town State Park.

Located just inside Mission Bay Channel Marina Village Marina is only minutes from the sparkling open waters of the Pacific. The peaceful, park-like setting is surrounded by waterfront resorts and recreational splendor. Boaters who have docked at our marina for years tell us that peace, privacy and security are the reasons they call Marina Village Marina their marina. MISSION BAY, SAN DIEGO

Mission Bay Park is the largest aquatic park on the West Coast. Its 4,600 acres are divided equally: about half land and half water. The focus here is on activities for boaters, paddle boarders, anglers, waterskiers, sailors and rowers. There are 27 miles of shoreline within the park’s borders, 19 of which are sandy beaches. For bluewater boaters and anglers, Mission Bay Park offers quick access to the Pacific Ocean. Visitors and locals enjoy Sail Bay, an area popular with dinghies, small-boat sail racing and windsurfing enthusiasts. An open-speed area is popular for personal watercraft and waterskiing. Supporting this popular tourist destination are major hotels, specialty shops and numerous restaurants and marinas.

Oceanside is a quaint harbor located in northern San Diego County — just south of the Orange County line, 36 miles north of the San Diego sea buoy. The ports to the south are Mission Bay and San Diego, while Dana Point is 23 miles north. Oceanside provides easy access to fuel and wonderful weekend destinations, including Newport Beach and Dana Point. It’s a small craft haven (home to only about 900 boats) and laid out so that you can walk from one end to the other to stretch your sea legs.

Complete harbor facilities include guest slips, launch ramps, a fuel dock, marine hardware stores, a shipyard, boat rentals, yacht sales and instruction, an all-year bait receiver, harbor cruises, windsurfing, PWC riding, certified dive charters, two yacht clubs, a sailing association, picnicking and a “baby beach” for young swimmers. Dana Point is home to tall ships Pilgrim and Spirit of Dana Point, the Ocean Institute and the OC Sailing and Events Center. Officially dedicated July 31, 1971, Dana Point Harbor is advanced in design and in facilities, but it is still the place of historic charm and secluded beauty that enchanted author Richard Henry Dana Jr. more than 170 years ago.

NEWPORT HARBOR

Once a shallow tidelands bay, semi-protected by sand spits with low-lying areas on both ends, Newport Harbor has developed into one of the finest small craft harbors in the world.

The harbor is home to more than 9,000 boats. Lining the inside channel is a quiet bay. Small islands form the outline of this scenic area of bluffs, sandy beaches and rock-strewn coves. Like guards against the encroaching sea, two jetties protect the harbor. Toward the harbor mouth, two main channels converge. The major activity is, of course, boating. Continually leaving for Catalina Island and other points west and south are large luxury cruisers and colorful sailboats that decorate the harbor. Boatyards, dry docks, nautical supply shops and yacht sellers service the needs of boaters. Sightseeing, excursion boats and fishing trips are scheduled. Private concessionaires rent out small fishing dories, powerboats, sailboats and paddleboards. Within the harbor, many regattas are held. The annual Newport-to-Ensenada Race is the largest international offshore sailboat race on the West Coast, with hundreds of participants. The harbor is also home to four sailing/boat training centers located along Coast Highway and is well-known for its weeklong lighted-boat parade during the holiday season.

17

Newport Harbor can accommodate all sizes of recreational and commercial boats — from small dinghies to large luxury yachts. Slips line much of the shoreline; a mid-channel anchorage is also available.

TWO HARBORS, CATALINA ISLAND

Catalina Harbor and Isthmus Cove make up what is called the Isthmus, a beautiful strip of land located about 23 miles by land and 12 miles by sea from Avalon. Catalina Harbor, situated on the west side of the island, is separated from Isthmus Cove on the east. The embayment offers protection from the elements, creating calm waters. Two Harbors is the seaside village located at the Isthmus of Catalina Island. Many visitors to Two Harbors sail on a private vessel to the island where they can moor at one of the more than 700 moorings offered. The rustic village offers plenty of recreational activities from camping and hiking, to scuba diving and pleasure boating. The Harbor Department can be found patrolling the many moorings here, available to offer help or advice to any boater, if needed.

HUNTINGTON HARBOUR

Generally referred to as “Huntington Harbour,” the area’s official title is Sunset/Huntington Harbour. Most of the harbor consists of privately held slips adjacent to residences, with a total of about 3,000 boats in the harbor. Its entrance is through Anaheim Bay and between the Naval Weapons Station and Huntington Harbour and under the Pacific Coast Highway bridge. Boats pass through the Anaheim Bay National

Wildlife Refuge. This is home to numerous types of marine life and birds that thrive in the natural habitat that has existed for years. The area has been called one of the most important and beautiful natural wildlife areas along the Pacific Coast. The harbor first opened its facilities in 1969. Prior to that, the area was an undeveloped natural waterway adjacent to the huge wetlands wildlife area that is still largely untouched.

LONG BEACH HARBOR

(INCLUDING ALAMITOS BAY) Long Beach Harbor is a major destination for recreational boaters, and there are spaces for more than 4,400 boats. Besides recreational boating, tourism is important to the economy. Major attractions include Queen Mary, Aquarium of the Pacific and whale-watching tours. Long Beach is also a major industrial port, ranked second-busiest in the nation and 10th-busiest in the world. The town was laid out and settled in 1881 by developer W.E. Willmore, and renamed Long Beach, because of its 8.5-mile beach, in 1884. In June 1911, the Port of Long Beach was founded on 800 acres of mudflats at the mouth of the Los Angeles River. Since then, the port has grown to include more than 7,600 acres of wharves, state-of-the-art cargo terminals and shipping channels. Just below the Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro), between the Los Angeles River to the north and the San Gabriel River to the south, Long Beach Harbor marinas enjoy added protection because of a series of breakwaters and a southward-facing position. The huge natural bay gives boaters quick access to open water and an open route to Santa Catalina Island. Moreover, its marinas offer their own mix of sights and attractions and a wide array of facilities and services. Because of its year-round optimum sailing conditions, Long Beach is home to the Congressional Cup, the Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii and the annual Dragon Boat Race.

HARBOR GUIDE 2016

MARINA DEL REY

What began as the vision of a 19th-century real estate speculator has become a popular destination for day visitors, tourists, watersports enthusiasts and business travelers. In 1887, real estate developer M.C. Wicks envisioned turning the Playa del Rey estuary into a major commercial harbor. Working under the auspices of the Santa Fe RailRoad, Wicks’ Ballona Development Co. invested $300,000 to develop the area, but went bankrupt three years later. However, fate had something else in store for the area, which lost out to San Pedro in a competitive bid to create Los Angeles Harbor. In 1916, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that it was impractical to develop the Playa del Rey inlet and basin as a major harbor. Then, in 1936, Congress authorized reconsideration of the previous negative report, and a year later, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered another study. Marina proponents once again had a chance. From this point on, development of the marina would focus on its evolution as a recreational small craft harbor. April 1965 saw the formal dedication of Marina del Rey. It was the capstone of one man’s dream that can now be shared by all who visit this multifaceted destination. Today, Marina del Rey is home to more than 6,000 recreational boat slips, the highest density of restaurant seating in a 1-square-mile area outside of New York City and boat launch ramps that provide access for more than 100,000 trailerboats annually.

CHANNEL ISLANDS HARBOR

Channel Islands Harbor, situated between Port Hueneme and Ventura Harbor, is a vital, lively boating spot. The harbor is home to one of the finest maritime collections in the country at the Ventura County Maritime Museum, numerous marinas and marine businesses offering a wide range of boating services and supplies. This Ventura County-owned and operated recreational harbor is divided into three major areas: West, East and Peninsula – with separate public roads serving each area. On the West side, you’ll find marinas, retail establishments, restaurants and a park. The Peninsula is home to hotels and residential developments. On the East side, you’ll find boatyards, marine supplies, yacht brokerages and harbor law enforcement offices. In all, there are more than 2,100 boat slips in Channel Islands Harbor. Boat charters, dive centers and sportfishing excursions are also readily available here. Each Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the harbor offers a Farmer’s Market at Marine Emporium Landing with an impressive selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods and flowers — along with live music and activities for the whole family.

VENTURA HARBOR

VENTURA HARBOR

Ventura Harbor offers a wealth of marine services, several popular marinas and Ventura Harbor Village, a 33-acre waterfront shopping and dining area with many great options for hungry boaters – from snacks to fine dining. Here, you’ll find rental vessels ranging from kayaks and paddle boards to electric boats, a fresh fish market and a comedy club, among other unexpected attractions. Ventura Harbor is also home to Channel Islands National Park headquarters. From here, it’s only an 11-mile run to Anacapa Island –which is why this harbor is often referred to as “the Gateway to the Channel Islands.” A trip across the channel to the National Oceanic Marine Sanctuary brings visitors to a wilderness wonderland. Imagine encounters with an astounding variety of marine and plant life – including huge sharks, whales, dolphins, seals and sea lions. Seabirds – including endangered California brown pelicans – thrive on this coast. The tidepools and giant kelp forests of Channel Islands Harbor shelter more than 1,000 species.

SANTA BARBARA

43

Santa Barbara is one of the most beautiful cities on the coast and has a quaint downtown and a pretty, if challenging, little harbor. Thanks to private funding, a breakwater was built in the 1920s. Max Fleishmann wanted a harbor and a safe haven for his 250-foot yacht, Haida, contributing $450,000 before the project was completed in 1928. This was only the beginning of an ongoing battle against sand, tides and weather. Dredging barges are a common sight in the harbor. Until the 1870s, Santa Barbara was isolated from the outside world by the ocean and the mountains. In 1872, John Stearns built a wharf to provide for his lumber business and opened up Santa Barbara’s waterfront. Stearns Wharf is the oldest working wooden wharf in California. Today, the harbor is home to more than 1,000 pleasure and commercial vessels, providing a safe haven and a doorway to the Channel Islands and the open seas – and it is the last harbor before rounding Point Conception on your way up the coast.
