Ahh,
That time of the year when families gather to exchange gifts and gorge themselves on hearty meals and when it’s finally socially acceptable to drink Scotch whiskey at lunch. Okay, so maybe we all need to lay off the Scotch a bit. Now that we’ve agreed on that, can we also dispense with the awkward Secret Santa rituals, whose only purpose seems to be recycling tasteless bric-a-brac. Switch to gift cards people! It is in the spirit of trying to avoid the pitfalls of this end-ofthe-year season that we present to you OC Weekly’s 2017 Holiday Guide. It’s packed with fun ideas on where to go, what to do, and what to eat and drink while you do it. Let’s just be honest and emphasize the drink part, while we’re at it — we’re talking cocktails and lots of them, recipes included!

At the Goodwill Fitness Center, its staff of knowledgeable dedicated personal trainers and physical therapists focus on providing one-on-one services to people with disabilities or chronic illness in a uniquely supported community environment. The center is the only one of its kind in Orange County. It’s people like you who drive Goodwill’s economic engine and allow the organization to expand its programs and serve more people each year. Through the sale of donated items across Goodwill’s 25 local retail stores, more than 92 cents of every dollar spent goes directly back into Goodwill’s life-changing programs. hat is the SUB? Great question. The SUB is a plug and play home draft machine--think Keurig for craft beer. It’s small enough to fit on a countertop and uses light-weight recyclable mini kegs filled with IPAs, stouts, seasonals and more. Hopsy partners with award winning craft breweries from the San Francisco Bay area and San Diego including Belching Beaver, Monkey Paw, Bare Bottle and Drake’s brewing. They work with the breweries to fill the mini kegs with super-fresh craft beer and then let you go online and order whatever your taste buds desire. The mini kegs are delivered cold to your home and ready to be thrown on tap. Nothing beats a fresh craft beer on draft and now you can have that experience right in your home. In Partnership with OC Weekly – Hopsy is offering a badass intro offer to try their service. You can get the SUB home draft machine, valued at $149, for only $39 when you join the monthly beer club. The club requires a commitment of only three months and includes four MINI kegs delivered monthly at $14.99 per keg—and yes, delivery is included. Get it on it today and have fresh craft beer on tap for your holiday parties. sf.hopsy.beer/the-sub-club-pack-oc

GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE OF ORANGE COUNTY
G
A Fresh Start for Deserving Dogs
erman Shepherd Rescue of Orange County has been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming German Shepherd dogs that have nowhere else to turn since 1998. As a grassroots non-profit organization, GSROC assists dogs that have suffered abandonment, abuse, neglect and injury. Approximately 50% of the dogs that enter the rescue are surrendered directly from families who no longer want their animals due to personal crisis, moving, or financial hardship, while the other 50% of dogs come from local animal shelters. On average, GSROC has more than 80 dogs in its care, with a placement rate of 300+ dogs every year. The volunteer-driven organization survives entirely on donations, receiving no government funding or municipal support. Contrary to popular belief, the dogs that enter the rescue are not necessarily ‘damaged’ or of poor quality. Typically, the dogs are discarded by no fault of their own, with “moving” being the most common reason for abandoning a dog, “no time for” being the second most common reason, and caretaker injury or illness being the third. GSROC prides itself on matching dogs to families based on each dog’s personality and each family’s experience level and lifestyle. “We are not a volume-driven business,” explains GSROC Director Maria Dales. “We take care and time to place dogs in homes where we believe they will thrive and be happy. Think of us as a ‘match-making’ service for German Shepherds. We are their ambassadors. Our job is not to send every applicant home with a dog—our job is to ensure that each dog in

our care finds a permanent, loving home.” Recognizing that there are many animal lovers who would like to help but may not be in a position to adopt a German Shepherd dog, GSROC offers these suggestions for how you can make a difference for needy dogs in the local community: • Foster a homeless dog – German Shepherd Rescue of OC provides food, medical support and marketing while a dog awaits adoption in your home. • Sponsor vet care—Dogs that arrive with injuries or illness receive quality care at local veterinary hospitals. Tax-deductible donations to the rescue ensure that critical treatment can be provided. • Volunteer—The rescue welcomes reliable volunteers for walking, bathing and transporting dogs. • Donate unwanted vehicles--Cars, trucks, boats and RVs accepted. • Host a fundraiser, garage sale, bake sale or other activity to raise funds • Spread the word about GSROC dogs for adoption. • Promote Spay and Neuter to prevent pet overpopulation. German Shepherd Rescue of OC is a 501c3 non-profit organization (EIN-20-3455479). For more information, to volunteer and to view available dogs, please visit GSROC.ORG
With so many shepherds depending on us, we are constantly in need of supplies. Can you help us with a donation of any of these items?
