WELCOME TO THE BOAT SHOW
T
his year represents the 44th year Duncan McIntosh Company (DMC) has produced boat shows in Southern California. DMC is best known for producing in-water shows in Newport Beach, San Pedro, San Diego and Marina del Rey, and of course, the Fred Hall Shows in Long Beach, Del Mar and now Bakersfield. This is the first time we have produced the LA Show, which is in its 61st year. The first order of business upon taking over this event was to find more compatible quarters. Visitor parking, rent, moving and setup costs were suppressing the number of exhibitors who could participate and the total number of boats that would be on display at this iconic boating event. To solve all those problems, the show moved to LA County’s Fairplex facility in Pomona. What does this all mean to you? A much wider range of 2017 makes and models along with all the gear and accessories that go with owning a boat. A continuing trend for 2017 is the growth in the tow boat segment, which continues to fill out the product offering for wakesports enthusiasts and has become one of our biggest categories of new boats. Jet boats and personal watercraft remain popular, and there’s no shortage of them at the show. In the general boat department, we’ve got ‘em, all sizes up to 37 feet overall — the show’s biggest when this program went to press. There are overnight trailerable cruisers, sportfishing center consoles, sport runabouts, and the fastest from the high-performance category you’ll find anywhere. New models of fast boats will be coming from as far away as Lake Havasu and Northern California. Paddle craft, and standup boards round out this year’s watercraft offerings. The economic gods are shining down on boating this year. Just a few months ago, new boat sales returned to the
+LABS 2017 Directory.indd 4
high-water mark of 2007-2008, a pre-recession level many of us weren’t sure we’d ever see again. Builders have been ramping up production, new models are back in dealer inventory, and more and more people are wearing a smile of anticipation, thinking this will be the year they’ll be out on the water in a little something new. The show includes many attractions for the entire family. Check out the Coconut Tree Climb, which resembles a rock wall but in the form of four coconut trees you climb to the treetops. The zip line is just what the name implies: get harnessed in, get hooked up, and take the ride of your life to the next stop. Our old standbys, balloon artists and the face painters, will be on hand to bring a whole new fresh look to your makeup. Tell your artist what you want, then close your eyes and pray … if it doesn’t match your wishes, you can always wash it off and start over. Warning! These faces look a lot like your pet cat or dog but with a little artistic liberty in terms of whisker length, eye shades and freckles. Don’t miss the sports bars, a few of which are scattered throughout the venue. The main bar is in building 10, and a wine bar is in building 4. TVs are being set up for the big playoff games on Boat Show Sunday, for attendees who like a little variety in the show shopping experience and want to keep the whole family happy. WHAT TO SEE AND DO
B
oating is the most fun family activity, so why should the boat show be any different? We hope you’ll enjoy spending some time at the show – a beautiful venue with hundreds of new boats and tons of gear and accessories to browse, board and buy!
Be sure to hit buildings 4, 6, 7 and 10 - which are all teeming with cool new boats and products. Keep the kiddos entertained at Kid’s Zone where you can engage in a little family-friendly competition on the Zipline and cheer each other to the top of the Coconut Tree. Stop for a
bite to eat and a frosty beverage to keep everyone going strong and check the scores on game day. Whatever you choose to do, we hope you have a great time! Be sure to tag your photos and social media posts with #laboatshow so we can track all of the fun!
FOOD AND BEVERAGE Let’s have some fun! Take a break from browsing, grab a drink and catch up on the scores! Pick up a snack on your way to the Sports Bar in Building 10 or sample some of California’s best wine from San Antonio Winery at the Wine Bar in Building 4. Concession stands throughout the show will offer your family, and your waistline, a little something for everyone.
MINIATURE WONDERLAND Boat show guests will have special access to the historic Fairplex Garden Railroad on Saturday. What is now one of the oldest and possibly largest miniature railroads in the nation began as a special static exhibit at the third LA County Fair in 1924. Through the years it has grown into a beautiful landscape of miniatures. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to walk through this special feature.

COCONUT TREE CLIMB
ZIPLINE Harness up, climb the stairs, and get ready to fly! Our Zipline soars above the show, bringing smiles to anyone who’s brave enough to go for a ride. With max weight of up to 250 lbs, this zipline can handle kids and their parents at the same time! Two adventurers can zip simultaneously, a great activity that father/son and mother/daughter can do together. Get ready to strap in and take the ride of your life! (Recommended for children 4+).
A great new activity for kids, the coconut tree climb is a simulated rock-climbing environment that uses a pulley system to “help” kids climb a series of plastic pegs on a large coconut tree! It’s totally safe and totally easy for kids as young as 3 years old. Kids will strap into a harness, then climb their way up to the top of a 30 foot plastic coconut tree, once they make it to the top they will slam a buzzer that lets everyone know they made it to the top! (Recommended for children 3+)
GAME DAY VIEWING AREA Stick around for the conference championship games on Sunday – we will be broadcasting live in every building throughout the show! For the full experience, grab a snack from Pink’s or Hot Dog on a Stick and head in to the Sports Bar in Building 10. How often do you get to watch the game, indulge in yummy snacks and drinks surrounded by beautiful new custom boats and cruisers??
BALLOON ART Think of your favorite 8-legged creature from the sea. Maybe a Pirate’s sword or light saber will spark imaginations. Whatever you wish for … balloon man Dale Carlson can create a fun souvenir right in front of your eyes!
FACE PAINTING Head over to Rad-A-Tat and have one of our brilliant face painters – Jody and Samantha - magically transform you into a butterfly or tiger. Be sure to tag your photos and posts with #laboatshow so we can track all of the fun!

BOAT SHOW PREVIEW
T
his year is shaping up to be an incredible one for boats, as manufacturers release lots of new models that are going where boats haven’t gone before, and you’ll be able to see many of them right here at the LA Boat Show. Upper-end boats are delivering more luxury, comfort and functionality, but boat manufacturers haven’t forgotten about the rest of us, with many entrylevel models that display a previously unknown level of luxury blended with affordability. Surfing is a cool sport, but it’s a hassle. You have to wait for the right conditions, paddle past breaking waves and then, if you’re lucky, ride a wave for a few seconds before crashing and maybe picking up a case of reef rash in the
bargain. Wakesurfing is the hottest watersport going, for a few reasons: The surf’s always up. You don’t have go to the ocean. In one day you can rack up more actual riding time than in a year of “real” surfing. And this year there are many more ways to get your surf on. The premium boat builders are finding new ways to maximize waves while surrounding riders with luxury. MasterCraft’s new X23 not only puts out a first-rate surfing wake, it also has the new DockStar Rudder system that makes docking far easier. Tigé’s RZX2, the little brother to the RSX3, has some new features such as the Tigé Clear 10.6-inch display that takes charge of all the boat’s onboard systems. Malibu’s M Series M235
MALIBU M235
is simply the most advanced wakesurf boat Malibu has ever built and uses the patented Surf Gate system to deliver a clean, huge wave that is easily switchable. Nautique’s new GS2 uses its Wave Plate technology to deliver a monster wave without heeling far over. The Centurion Ri257 is the builder’s flagship and has 5,500 pounds of available ballast that can fill in seconds rather than minutes thanks to RAMFILL. There are more affordable options for going wakesurfing, including MB Sports’ Tomcat F21, a quality-built midsize boat that delivers a huge wake at a price that will stay in five figures. The Axis A22 is built on the same assembly line as Malibu Boats and delivers an upscale experience at an affordable price. The Supreme S211 proves a smaller boat can produce a

great wave at a great price point. Bayliner has even gotten into the wakesurfing game with its recent purchase of Heyday, which builds the WT-1 (Water Tractor), a no-frills, made-for-surfing boat that’s cute in the same way as a pug but comes in at a beautiful price of less than $40k, including a trailer. Thanks to a recent innovation from Volvo-Penta called Forward Drive — twin, in-line props that face forward and tuck under the hull for safety — Cobalt is in the surf game in a big way with its R5 WSS Surf model. Chaparral has five Surf Series boats, including the 244 Sunesta Surf, that all use a licensed version of Malibu’s Surf Gate system. Regal Boats also uses the Forward Drive system on its two Surf boats, the 2100 RX Surf and 2300 RX Surf. Sea Ray is in the surfing game with the SLX 230-W, a boat that adds a new twist: a V-drive system that has Joystick Piloting for Inboards, which integrates twin thrusters for unsurpassed maneuvering at slow speeds. Yamaha has even gotten into the surf game with its 212X, a jet boat with plenty of luxurious amenities and one of the best “back porches” in the industry.

The pontoon boat segment is still going strong, and this year we’ve seen more choices than ever. They blend great performance with more room than yachts that cost many times their price. Take, for example, Premier’s Dodici Pub, a 12-foot-wide bar pontoon powered by triple Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 hp outboards. One of the most eye-catching models out there is the Manitou Legacy XPlode XT; it can be purchased with a mind-blowing green metallic color scheme that matches its twin Evinrude E-TEC G2 250 hp engines. Recently, a South Bay 925CR pontoon, owned by Brad Rowland, went 114 mph. While not that fast, South Bay’s new 523 DC can be

powered with up to a supercharged Mercury Verado 350 hp. Pontoon builders also offer a surprising level of luxury and versatility, as evidenced by models such as Qwest’s Avanti 823 Lanai DS Bar. Crest’s new
+LABS 2017 Directory.indd 10
TIARA 31
Caliber pontoons are visual stunners and make great recreational watersports boats. Avalon’s stylish Art Deco-inspired models create a visual statement while being among the more upscale choices. The high-end market is also well-represented
by Bennington, with models such as the 25 QSB, which features a queen-sized rear-facing lounger. Cobalt has even entered the pontoon market, with what it terms a “Platform Boat,” with models that channel Cobalt’s high-end DNA, such as the M27. Bowriders are still some of the most popular boats around, and we’ve tested the full range, including yacht-certified models such as Cruisers’ 338 South Beach Edition and Sea Ray’s SLX 310 OB that features twin Mercury Verado supercharged outboards. Deckboats are still hot, and they give owners the most passenger room of any monohull, often at an irresistibly low price. The Hurricane SunDeck 187 is less than 19 feet long but can hold up to 10 passengers. The Bayliner VR Series offers more space than others in its class thanks to a deckboat design that carries its wide beam all the way forward. You’ll see some larger boats at the LA Boat Show, too, including the Tiara 31, a luxurious day yacht that’s perfect for a trip to Catalina or an extended cruise to Mexico. Cruisers’ 35 Express offers passengers an airy, expansive cockpit and a comfortable, well-appointed cabin.

COMMONSENSE TIPS FOR SAFE BOATING
B
If you haven’t thought about onboard safety in a while, this refresher could be exactly what you need. BY CAPT. FRANK LANIER CAPTFKLANIER.COM
oating is an activity that truly offers something for everyone, whether the crew is fishing, skiing or just messing around. It requires preparation and planning to ensure each outing goes smoothly. Our 11 commonsense tips will make your time on the water safer and more enjoyable.
+LABS 2017 Directory.indd 14
1 Sky Watch
2 In the Loop
Check the weather before heading out. Always check weather forecasts and warnings before you leave the dock, and remain vigilant on the water. Listen to NOAA weather radio broadcasts on a VHF radio, for weather warnings and forecasts on the water. Before the outing, view forecasts online at nws.noaa.gov/ nwr or on any of the other various weather websites available, such as Weather Underground (wunderground.com) and Weather Bug (weatherbug.com). It’s also a good idea to have a bailout plan in the event of severe weather. Check area charts for possible safe harbors nearby, in case you’re unable to make it back to your departure point.
File a float plan. From a safety standpoint, letting a responsible person on shore know where you’ll be boating and when you plan to return is a no-brainer. A float plan not only ensures that search and rescue agencies are notified in a timely manner in the event of an emergency, but it also speeds up response times by narrowing down the search area. Free float plan forms are available for download at Float Plan Central (floatplancentral.cgaux.org/). When filing a float plan, make sure the information provided is both detailed and accurate. Avoid last-minute on-the-water changes such as boating destinations and the launch ramp used, unless you can contact and update the person who’s maintaining your float plan ashore.

3 Detection
4 Practice Makes Perfect
Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Marine-grade smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are recommended on all boats over 26 feet in length that have a galley and enclosed sleeping quarters. All internal combustion engines and open-flame equipment — stoves and heaters, for example — emit CO, an odorless, colorless gas that can kill in minutes. CO may also be drawn into the cabin from other vessels through ventilation systems. An even better option for boats that utilize a generator to power air conditioners and other appliances would be a CO alarm system designed to shut off the generator once CO is detected.
Practice dockside and underway safety drills. Nothing can better prepare an owner and his crew for an emergency than regular safety drills. Draft basic instructions for events such as fire, a man overboard (MOB), sinking and any situation that seems possible, and discuss safety equipment location and procedures with everyone on board. Assign roles and responsibilities to crewmembers where appropriate, and make sure all crewmembers know what’s expected of them in an emergency. Mix it up a bit to make drills more interesting and to better prepare for those “out of the box” situations — the captain as the MOB, for example. Don’t forget to include younger crewmembers. Teaching your 10-year-old how to operate the VHF radio and make a distress call instills confidence and just may save a life — maybe yours.
+LABS 2017 Directory.indd 15
Coast Guard inspections will go much more smoothly if your boat is equipped with more than the minimum requirements for items such as life jackets, and emergencies could end positively if everyone knows how to use the VHF radio.
1/12/17 6:57 AM
16
Los Angeles Boat Show Show Directory
5 Flotation Buy life jackets people will actually wear. Most boats carry the obligatory four-for-$25 orange rectangular life jackets, so they meet the minimal requirements of one per every person aboard. They remain stuck in some out-of-the-way locker and rarely see the light of day. Why not take your safety game up a notch by upgrading to life jackets the crew will actually wear? Newer life jacket designs, such as inflatable vests or “fanny pack” types, are comfortable and affordable. Wearing a life jacket should be second nature to boaters, akin to automatically donning a seat belt when getting in a car.
6 Do More Go beyond the minimal safety requirements. The U.S. Coast Guard requirements for items such as flares and portable fire extinguishers are the bare minimum. Most boaters don’t realize the average discharge time for the B/C Type I dry chemical extinguishers on most boats is only eight to 15 seconds or that the typical burn time of a red day/night handheld flare is 40 seconds or less. These minimum requirements should be viewed more as a starting point than the final word.
S.O.S. SIRIUS SIGNAL
7 Brief ’Em Conduct a safety brief before each trip. A pre-departure safety brief is always a good idea, especially with new folks aboard. Cover the basics, such as the location of safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, life jackets, first aid kit), but don’t be afraid to include additional topics, such as use of the VHF radio. Post a diagram of the vessel that shows were everything is, from seacocks to fire extinguishers.

Los Angeles Boat Show Show Directory 8 Your Inner Phelps Learn how to swim. Wearing a life jacket is well and good, but what better way to increase one’s boating pleasure and confidence on the water than knowing how to swim, should the need arise. Sign the kids up, too.
9 Checkup Conduct an annual safety inspection. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free Vessel Safety Checks. Auxiliary members check your boat’s equipment and provide information about its use, safety procedures and applicable regulations. Unlike a real boarding by the Coast Guard, you don’t have to worry about getting a citation
during this inspection. They simply let you know how to correct any deficiencies or problems they find.
10 Alarming Install a high-water bilge alarm. When it comes to dealing with flooding, quick detection is the key. The early warning provided by a bilge alarm can add valuable minutes — extra time to find the leak (while it’s still above incoming water), don life jackets, bring additional pumps online or send out a last-ditch distress signal. Make sure the alarm is loud enough to be heard over engine noise and by marina personnel or passersby when the boat is docked.
17
11 Location, Location, Location Buy a PLB or EPIRB. With PLB units available for less than $200, even the most tight-fisted boat owner can afford to add a PLB to the arsenal of onboard safety equipment. Always register all PLB or EPIRB units with NOAA (beaconregistration.noaa.gov/), and don’t forget to update any changes (e.g., contact phone numbers, units that are sold). For an extended cruise, use the “Additional Data Field” to provide information such as number of passengers, special considerations (medical issues) and anything else that’s suggested.

OVER 460 BOAT TEST VIDEOS... ... AND COUNTING! We answer the questions that really matter to you - before you buy a boat. Ride along with Boating World’s executive editor Alan Jones as he tests hundreds of makes and models, from ski boats to pontoons. Our boat test video vault includes over 460 clips — each with in-depth walk-throughs highlighting features and options, and running footage showing how the boat accelerates and corners (including the type of wake). We put ourselves in your shoes and deliver practical and objective opinions on how each boat measures up.
