THE YEAR OF COVID THE YEAR OF COVID just keeps on going! Last March if anyone would have asked me if I thought a year from now, we would still be under Covid-19 restrictions, I would have made a ridiculous face and said, “of course not”! My answer would have been the same if you had said six months, instead of a year but here we all are and its still going. Gratefully partial restrictions were lifted on March 15th, 2021 and the world seems to slowly be getting back to normal, whatever that may be? Here at Duncan Mcintosh Company, we are looking forward to holding a few of our annual boat shows this year, just waiting for the “all clear and good to go” from our local politicians and county officials. Please keep checking our websites for the latest updates. Not being able to participate in normal extracurricular activities with friends and family, Americans sought out other ways to have fun social distancing and took to the water. According to NMMA, nearly 320,000 new boats were sold in 2020. Between September and December of 2020, boats sales were up 40% from 2019. That’s a lot of water traffic! I’m curious if you, our readers, purchased or sold a boat in 2020. I would like to hear from you. Please share your covid boating stories with me.

INNOVATIVE

SOLUTIONS,

and versatile ‘One Model – One Word’ approach has resulted in over 2200 boats produced to date. In use in more than 70 countries around the world, making Axopar one of the most globally talked-about new brands in its size-range. Co-founding partner, Jan-Erik Viitala, says: “The joint passion shared with Axopar owners all over the world keeps us motivated to develop the best possible products and ensure we stay ahead of the game at all times. We have listened to our customers and we are excited to reveal the new revolution of the Axopar 37 range.” The new ultimate cross-over between open and enclosed boating, the Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin challenges convention in both looks and onboard functionality bringing a new era to all-weather boating. The Axopar 37XC Cross Cabin combines the functionality, ease of movement, social outdoor and indoor spaces and versatility of outboard walkaround centre-consoles with a spacious, fully enclosed weather proofed cabin, that with distinctive looks challenges traditional perceptions of cabin boats. We consider the 37 XC to be the Gran Turismo of the seas opening a world of possibilities for safe, extended voyages in comfort even in unpredictable weather and with 50% of all Axopar 37’s being sold as cabin versions makes this one single model one of the most important in the Axopar fleet. The Axopar 37 range offers an even more comfortable ride with enhanced driving dynamics, while at the same time remaining very responsive and sporty in its character.

By listening to our customers’ feedback and interacting with current Axopar owners, we have improved functionality and practicality on board, resulting in a completely new space-experience, and all at the right price-point. Our R&D team set us on a course to revolutionise the 37 concept all over again. With an array of features and benefits never

seen on a boat within this field. We have enhanced everything that you can touch and feel on the boat. The clever thing about the concept is that the new 37 clearly feels and looks that its now a bigger boat that its predecessor, but in reality, thru extensive development we have been able to keep same nimble and agile size. Results & Benefits of the new A-37 Revolution hull compared to its predecessor: • A more fluid, more aesthetically pleasing design gives the feeling & impression of being a bigger boat. • Increased top speed and reduced fuel-consumption - Faster passage times, less costly and the ability to stay out on the water longer. • Hydrodynamics have lessened the need for continuous trim - Increased comfort through keeping the boat flatter more of the time. • Stiffer, stronger hull - More capable of handling higher average & top speeds and more comfortable in challenging sea conditions • Improved visibility and ergonomics of the helm - A more relaxed feeling, while remaining completely in-control • Better appointed front cabin, with 30% increased volume - More usable living space, where people will want to spend more time in • Innovative, never-before-seen Gullwing doors - Better access to the front cabin, more natural daylight and closer interaction with the outdoors environment. • Optional enclosed toilet/shower room option* - More likely to enjoy overnighting for a longer period of days. • An increase of up to four modular aft deck options* - Increased opportunity of satisfying a specific boating need or lifestyle. • Ultra-cool Revolution Camouflage wrap option* - Not only looks amazing but protects the hull gelcoat from stains & scratches. *Sold as optional equipment.

ASK THE EXPERTS THE EXPERTS By GRID MICHAL GRINDING GRID’S GEARS

NEVER LET MY VOCATION BECOME MY AVOCATION MY MOTHER, A WONDERFUL English teacher, the first female in the country to be allowed

to work at a major newspaper’s male dominated copy desk, was also a master of left-handed compliments. She told me to never let my vocation become my avocation lest I become a truly boring person. Not only did I become a truly boring person, over the thirty-one years I’ve been writing for boating magazines I just discovered that columns should have a beginning, middle, and end that actually tie together to make sense. How about that. I must have cut that class to slip around the corner for a Marlboro. Let me try, regardless. I might luck out once. I have always enjoyed boating, more into the joy of laughter than the physics as a too-large engine sped a cross-planked crabbing skiff into oblivion as planks ripped off at warp speed and the remaining hulk—engine attached—went down at a

forty-five degree angle, forever embedded in the Virginia mud. I didn’t know how to work with wood or build a boat, but my good arm could start a lawnmower and mow yards until I could buy a boat that floated two consecutive days. I learned to

compensate in many ways. I followed a Bell Curve from ignorant to brilliant to ignorant: What makes a boat float (especially if I’m involved)?; a corporate career teaching business ethics and customer service, interspersed with outboard tech schools; and back to ignorant again as my bag-phone became obsolete, even though my new flip phone worked great, and iPhones became skeet targets as my greasy fingers engaged dozens of apps as I was looking for just ONE flippin’ number! Boston Whalers once sold out the door for $695 at my dad’s marina. $695 followed by three zeroes is the starting point for the shiny rigs at

the local dealer. Everything is electrically operated. Inboard and inboard-outboard power has been replaced by multiples of hundreds of ponies spinning 16” diameter horseshoes rocketing these rigs off to find the catch of the day, cost be damned! I sold our boat this summer because I wasn’t capable of launch or retrieval any longer. I let the Garmin GPS go with it because there weren’t any street names and the cute girl in the one in our Highlander doesn’t work two voice-jobs. The young man who bought the boat has communicated at least once a week thanking me for all the fun he’s having. At 0330 today, Sunday, I sorted and started the laundry. I’m care-giving The Motor Nurse, who has arthritis of the spine and just had upper whatevers fused, works her way toward November’s surgery on her lower back. I discovered you have a hard time folding a fitted sheet one-handed. There may be a way, though, and it’ll certainly draw away from the boring

person I am. Izzy, our eighty-pound golden shepherd reminds me as long as I feed her and throw the ball all day, I’m not boring.

My good arm could start a lawnmower and mow yards until I could buy a boat that floated two consecutive days Thank you, Izzy. Offsetting all this is my hiring of Hank, who thought he was retiring from the busy (and lucrative) Northern Virginia’s automobile technical centers to this idyllic waterfront town of about 200 people (I’ll check the obits shortly to see how accurate that is) until his wife decided he needed

to get out and DO something other than drive her nuts. He walked two doors down, introduced himself, got in the passenger’s side of the truck, and told me to drive. I drove. In five miles you’d think we’d known each other a century. His diagnostic ability is astounding. Our workload has quadrupled each month since July. He is also a master chef. My ratings lead toward crunchy peanut butter thicknesses, or baked crab cakes. Starting Monday, as soon as I’m through flogging Hank in his engines, I’ll start flogging him to make us dinner. He’s a wonderful asset to the new Motor Doctors. This, then, brings me full circle (for once). I’ll grind Grid’s curmudgeonly gears for as long as Duncan and Kevin want me to, and hope my readers find pleasure in my words. Right now, I have to take care of The Nurse, the laundry, the dog, the yard, and count my blessings daily that Hank saw a wonderful opportunity. No intelligence required. Only love.

THE GT36 IS THE Beneteau French design we love but the US version is made in Cadillac, Michigan. This is the perfect family cruiser with sports performance. She exudes comfort and elegance. The GT 36 OB is definitely a boat I can get behind. So, when Barrett Canfield for South Coast Yachts in San Diego and Newport Beach CA reached out to me and said the first GT 36 OB just arrived in San Diego, I made plans to be there.

BENETEAU GRAN TURISMO 36 OB Family cruiser or powerboat? Both! The new GT36 OB will knock your socks off

On a warm sunny California day, Jason and I met Barrett and Sean Smith at the docks. I really like the Outboard option, as it frees up more interior space for other amenities. The Mercury engines do come with color options, but I prefer the white because it flows with the grey and white color scheme aboard and accentuates the spaciousness. The first thing I noticed while stepping aboard were the extended swim platforms, allowing easy access on and off the boat as well as moving past the motors. Speaking of motors, this GT36 OB is equipped with twin 300hp verado engines, (a.k.a. torque monsters) with joysticks.

ON DECK

I’ve been on my share of powerboats hauling ass and smashed between the person to my left and to my right because that was the only sitting option. So, it’s easy to imagine my joy seeing the layout of the GT36 OB. It is refreshingly obvious that quite a bit of forethought went into it. Definity designed with comfort and entertaining in mind. The size of the cockpit is impressive with a u-shaped dinette settee on the port side and an L-shaped settee on starboard. Comfortably accommodating 10 of your closest friends in this one area alone for a full day of fun. I like to entertain and with that in mind, the GT36 OB has a nice size aft wetbar and galley that I absolutely love. No more SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021  19

running up and down below to grab a cold drink and snacks. The aft galley is equipped with a barbeque, fridge, freezer and trash bin! If you’re looking to strength out and relax, the stern of the boat also has a sun pad with cupholders and a backrest that moves forward or back for your suntanning pleasure. The Helm station has large seats than will accommodate two people on both the starboard and port side enhancing the connection with your loved ones. The captain’s chair has a bolster giving you the option to stand or sit ergonomically maximizing your visibility. The hardtop is designed for ultimate protection, visibility and air flow in mind cross ventilation hatches and a massive sunroof for getting the perfect rays.

BELOW DECK

As soon as you step down below, all of the house systems and switches are located in one panel for easy access. The below deck interior is very spacious. Midship you will find ample room to gather. The main salon is a cozy lounge area with an L-shaped settee for dining and doubles as a bed that sleeps five. Starboard side has the second galley with a stainless sink, nice sized refrigerator, microwave, stove overhead counter and below storage. The GT36 has two state rooms. Passing the galley is the Owner stateroom with a queen-sized bunk and lots of storage for hanging or folding. The long running windows on each side provide for natural light. Port side you will find the air-condition and heat controls and an extra Beneteua bonus, USB ports on each side of the bed. The second full beam stateroom, in the middle of the boat is also

queen-sized, equipped with storage, windows, air-conditioning and heating controls. The head of the boat has a large vanity sink, an electric flush toilet and a separate shower with a closed off shower door. This is a huge plus!

UNDERWAY

Firing up this baby is easy and quick. Using the light up Mercury joystick is a breeze making it super easy to maneuver the boat with the touch of the hand. The joystick and bow thruster give the boat precise maneuvering, no more having to calculate speed and distance! The joystick also allows you to go sideways, walking the boat back and forth. On the Helm are two 12-inch Garmin controls with all the information you will need. The engines are super quite so there is no need to yell while pushing the limits on open waters. Providing extra stability and protection, the GT36 OB has a recessed bow area and high bow rails the at the front of the boat and also 18 degrees of dead rise allowing the boat to cut right through the waves. Out on the water, I was pleasantly surprised at how effortlessly and smooth my turns were at 36 knots. The new GT 36 Outboard is very well designed showing meticulous attention to the details all around. The equipment is top of the line and the comfort is superb. This is a sport boat with all the practical amenities entertaining friends and family. The combination of the design, options and amenities make it an exceptional boating experience. The GT 36 Outboard with be another Beneteau favorite and best seller!

BENETEAU OCEANIS 40.1 The gold standard of sailing

22  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021

+Sea Trial Ooceanis.indd 22

3/25/21 1:02 PM

WHAT CAN I SAY? The Beneteau Oceanis 40.1 is everything I love about sailing. Blending class, comfort and performance at it’s finest. She is a true beauty. Following in the wake of her elder sister the Oceanis 46.1, this 40-foot cruiser, with a new hull design by Marc Lombard, offering unprecedented deck volume and interior space. With an avant-garde flared hull design, the Oceanis 40.1 is leading the way, with no concessions to performance.

The Oceanis 40.1 arrived in San Diego at South Coast Yachts in late February, the new owners from Newport Beach CA, gave permission for me to take the boat (Evelyn, is her name) for a Sail before they picked her up. I am the only person that was granted access and it was a great honor! Sean Smith with South Coast Yachts San Diego welcomed me and my partner aboard for an afternoon of sailing.

ONDECK

The flared hull increases the area of the forward deck making for a better flow of movement as well as anchoring and mooring easier. The lines and halyards that lead aft to the helm station are now further to the rear, opening up the cockpit making it more agronomical, allowing more space for movability. The cockpit has two L-shaped benches

The transom easily converts into an extensive swim platform making for a fun day anchored at sea. At the Helm there are two helm stations, both stainless steel with leather wrap. The helm station has flip up seats making it easily accessible to the bow. Whomever is at the helm will appreciate the twin rudders and retractable bow.

INBOARD

The Oceanis 40.1 has 40 feet of space. Down below, the interior is a beautiful white oak finish, also available is the walnut interior option. Starboard side, the C-shaped galley wraps around giving it an abundance of counter space, double -basin sink, large refrigerator, freezer, oven, microwave, and plentiful storage above and below. Plenty of room to cook an entire meal while your friends enjoy wine and visit at the table. Port side has an enormous salon, L-shaped dinette settee with removable bench, comfortable sitting six for dinner. Utilizing all space, a chart table is at the foot of the companionway. This is perfect for those of us who end up working part of the weekend but still want to be in on the fun! Just above the chart table is your navigation station and electric panels. The hatches and the many hull and coachroof portholes, two of which face towards the cockpit, fill the boat with natural light and ventilation, making her exceptionally bright and giving you a below deck ocean view.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The philosophy of the Oceanis 40.1 is to make sailing and mooring pleasurable, comfortable accommodating six to eight people. Perfect for cocktailing and day sailing but seriously enough with a Class A sea rating to jump on a cruise down to Ensenada, Mexico.

comfortably seating six people. In the middle, a deluxe fiberglass cockpit table that has folding leafs with compartment forward, storage aft side and cupholders. The angled coamings and clear side decks making it super easy to walk from the bow to the platform.

The Oceanis 40.1 comes in 4 different versions with two, three, and four cabins to accommodate everyone’s idea of comfort. The owner version has a cabin with an ensuite shower and head, and a bed easily accessible from either side. The four-cabin layout has two forward berths with bunk below. Evelyn has the three cabin, one head option. The forward master cabin has a center line queen bed, accessible from both sides with plenty of volume due to the shape of the new hull. Ample storage space with hanging lockers and storage on both sides, great for outfits and SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021  23

completed the development and just launched an all-new 35’ Outboard Power Proa Catamaran. The new Aspen C108 expands on the company’s patented hull design featuring both non-symmetrical hulls and power that provide exceptional efficiency, tracking, and performance in all sea conditions. Inspired in part by current adventure seeking, Aspen owners who wanted the maximum in an eco-friendly cruiser that could also be easily moved to new cruising grounds, the Aspen team created the C108. By increasing the beam to 10’8” they kept the overall length under 40’ which greatly expanded the interior accommodation space while still allowing the boat to trailered. A combined boat and trailer towing weight of approximately 12,500 pounds (Aluminum trailer) means the C108 can be easily towed by a standard ¾ ton or larger pickup truck. Ideal for snowbirds, Aspen owners have tremendous flexibility whether simply hauling out for the winter or transporting their C108 to new and different cruising areas. Aspen has created an expansive layout for the New C108. The large new salon has been finished with fine teak by Aspen’s experienced craftsman and has 30% more livable space than previous Aspen models. Full height wrap around Solar Guard windows provide exceptional visibility while underway from the 5 person C-shaped dinette and the twin Bentley helm seats, that keep both owners and guests comfortable. The 12ft long galley includes an oven-stove combo, microwave, stainless steel sink, and multiple Burmese teak drawers. The cabin space is unparalleled for a boat this size and includes three private cabins. Multiple hatches and portholes bring in ventilation and light when not running heat or AC. An expansive head with shower, and a master suite complete with a King-sized bed showcase accommodation typically found on much larger vessels. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021  29

INIMIZING WASTE AND toxins onboard is easier than you think. Let’s take a look into the Galley. What is in your cleaning cabinet? Most household cleaners are in fact, toxic for your boat. If you are using dish soaps, soft scrubs, bleach, Windex or Pledge, you are ruining your boats surfaces. Here are four eco-friendly safe alternatives that you shouldn’t boat without:

• Baking Soda is hands down your boating all-purpose galley cleaner. It will clean your sinks, drains, trash containers, fiberglass and stainless steel. It will also help eliminate odors. • Vinegar is great for cleaning your below deck windows and mirrors, the microwave, woodwork and solving the calcification problem in the head toilet. • Lemons are an easy solution for getting rid of odor, just add water and boil. You can also add lemons to your vinegar when cleaning windows and mirrors. • Salt will remove beverage stains. Pour salt onto fresh stains immediately and allow the salt to absorb the stain. Then dab with cool water. • Now let’s move on to cookware. The Teflon, non-stick and uncoated aluminum pans, plastic and paper towels should take a hike. Here are some great non-toxic, versatile and reusable options: • Pure Ceramic is inorganic and non-metallic making it one of the safest and most versatile. It is microwave and dishwasher safe, safe for oven, grill, broiler and stovetop. • Cast iron cookware is naturally non-stick, heat retentive and durable non-toxic pan. Cast iron can be used on a stovetop, in the oven and on a grill. It’s is easily cleaned with warm water and a brush • Stainless steel is 100% recyclable helps with corrosion resistant and stops rust. It can be used on the stove, in the oven and broiler. • Titanium is nontoxic, lighter than steel, durable and rust proof. This pan is excellent for stove top and grilling and lower oven settings. • Glass containers are free of toxic chemicals, safe in broiler, stovetops microwave and dishwasher. • Cloth towels are a great alternate to paper towels and reusable. • Stainless steel or wooden utensils are better for the environment and do not retain bacteria like plastic. Last but not least Recycle, Recycle, Recycle. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021  33

F YOU’RE ACCUSTOMED to bareboat charters in the prime season, when the best anchorages fill early and what should have been a calming vacation has all the stress of rush hour on a New York subway, then let me tell you about our most wonderful discovery.

BY CHRIS CASW ELL

If

If you’re accustomed to bareboat charters in the prime season, when the best anchorages fill early and what should have been a calming vacation has all the stress of rush hour on a New York subway, then let me tell you about our most wonderful discovery. We chartered in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest in the offseason and found a host of pleasures. As an example, in the prime summer season, we would have fought to get dock space in Friday Harbor, the social center of the San Juan’s. After tying up temporarily on this charter, however, we walked up to the harbormaster’s office where the clerk, without even glancing up to see where we’d moored, told us, “You’re just fine where you are.” The next day, we stopped at Roche Harbor, whose

small marina is always booked solid from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This time, however, the dockmaster grinned and said, “Take any slip you want.” Later in the week, we spent the night at one of the popular state-owned Marine Parks and had the entire cove to ourselves, not counting the family of raccoons. Of course, the real off-season from fall to spring can be gray and grim, with enough rainfall to test your best foul weather gear. Our cruise, however, was in what travel agents call the “shoulder season”: that period in late April and early May before school lets out and the waterborne hordes

arrive. There is a matching season in late September and early October that is equally lonely in these islands that are filled to overflowing with yachts throughout the summer. We chartered a brand-new Morgan 45 from a small company in Anacortes, WA, with the intention of having a week of sailing for two couples, two youngsters and one common goal: a cruise that would take us away from civilization, where we could lean back in the cockpit and enjoy a beer and a good book without interruption. One where the kids could hike and row without having to worry about them constantly.

Lying roughly 60 nautical miles north of Seattle, the islands form an oval with San Juan Island on the west side facing Canada’s Vancouver Island, which provides shelter from Pacific gales. Draped limply over the top is Orcas Island, and most of the others are clustered around these two large islands. Carved into their present shape by the great glaciers of the Ice Age, the terrain bears the scars of the ponderous ice: deep slashes, smoothly planed rocks, and piles of rocky litter. The San Juan Islands are a democratic archipelago: there is literally something for everyone. Without going more than SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021  35

a half day’s sail in any direction, you can find hundreds of small coves, wildlife to watch, fossils to hunt, good skindiving, small villages to explore, resorts to enjoy, quiet beaches set in pine forests, and protected waters suitable for boats of all sizes. Residents claim there are 750 islands at low tide and 450 at high tide, but that’s really an unresolved question. At least 150 islands have names, so you can make your own estimates. Once you arrive in the islands, you can pick your cruising area by your moods and interests. If you like having shore power, some sort of civilization nearby and perhaps even some nightlife, you can choose from several large marinas and resorts. On the other hand, if you prefer to leave the madding crowd behind, you can enjoy a handful of isolated Marine Parks, with docks, moorings, and picnic facilities ashore. Most charter trips will start in Anacortes or Bellingham, a little to the north. Either way, the San Juans are a half-day trip by even the slowest boat, and you’ll soon be sliding past heavily forested islands and exploring deserted channels before

finding an anchorage for the night. The first day of our vacation was a long one. We flew to Seattle, rented a car, and drove to Anacortes, realizing for the first time what a wise decision it was to charter close to our destination. After overnighting on the boat and stowing provisions from the Anacortes supermarket, our first day was magnificent, with fluffy cumulus drifting overhead, a steady wind, and warm sun. Stretched out in the cockpit, we watched farms and homes slide past, many with grassy meadows sweeping to the waters edge and surrounded by towering pines. We took turns imagining where we might be in the world, with the best choices being somewhere on the Maine coast (not enough lobsterpots), on a lake in Switzerland (not enough snowy peaks), or exploring the Scandinavian islands (too warm). By mid-afternoon, we had reached Sucia Island, where we tied up to a pier in Fossil Bay. Our Sea Prize II had a sailing dinghy, and the two youngsters immediately set out on their own mini voyage of exploration along the cliffs and rocky beaches. Sucia has almost dreamlike shorelines that have

been carved by glaciers and water into soft sculptures that resemble frosting dripped over multi-colored layer cakes. With the pine forest mantle, you could be cruising Down East Maine as easily as upstate Washington. As dusk fell, the only sounds were the occasional splash of a fish or the faint breeze rustling in the pines, not to mention the sizzle of steaks on our barbecue. It was exactly what we had hoped for and, as far as we were concerned, the real world was a million miles away. The next morning started our regime of rising with the sun, and we explored the trails around our cove in search of fossils from the Ice Age but collected only an array of weather-polished stones as souvenirs. Setting off under power, we motored southwest across a mirror-smooth sea toward Stuart Island and skirting along the international boundary with Canada, we were suddenly surrounded by an immense school of dolphin. Though they were headed north by the hundreds, they found us a fascinating diversion and romped about our boat, playing in the wake and snorting happily as they surfaced alongside to the delight of the young and old alike. After the mammal convoy had passed, we wound through John’s Pass into the deep fjord of Reid Harbor on Stuart Island and, once again, found ourselves almost alone in a splendid State Marine Park anchorage. We tied up to the dock and climbed the steep gangway up the cliff, giving us a view down at our yacht before the short hike across to Prevost Harbor on the other side with its own anchorage and pier. There are a dozen Washington State marine parks in the San Juan Islands, with most of them accessible only by boat. Each is in an almost undisturbed condition, with a few picnic facilities, piers for landing, and trails to build your muscles and appetites. We found the towering green canopy of leaves overhead a delightful change from the burning skies of so many charter areas. But Stuart was only a lunch stop, and we were soon heading down San Juan Channel toward Friday Harbor. The social and political center of the islands, Friday Harbor has a large municipal marina only SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021  37

A Tale of Two Critters The Cagey Raccoon

Picnicking at James Island, we were joined by a hungry raccoon, but what caught our sympathy was that he had a limp. Everyone was happily feeding the little animal until someone suddenly asked, “Hey… wasn’t it his right front leg with the limp?”   In an instant, the raccoon’s ploy was transparent! His mother must have taught him that a limp would bring better morsels, but he kept forgetting which leg had the limp.   Watching us depart, he never knew why the potato chips suddenly dried up.

a short walk from the main street of town where, except for the automobiles, we might have passed through a time-warp into a 19th century fishing village. A few salty fishermen were striding along in knee boots and canvas jackets, the buildings were clapboard and elderly, and even the shade trees overhanging the small park were out of an old painting. The afternoon passed quickly as we explored the small shops where the proprietors are still delighted to lean on the counter and chat. Just as we were leaving, the last ferry arrived and we sat on a park bench watching the cars drive past, feeling like locals. From Friday Harbor, we retraced our steps around the north end of San Juan Island where we had a pleasant reach along the wooded shores with the looming bulk of Canada’s Vancouver Island in the haze to the west, but our destination was Roche

Harbor. Once a limestone quarry, only the Victorian buildings (Teddy Roosevelt once stayed here) remain to indicate a grand past, and we soon tucked into an empty slip. The facilities are excellent, with a laundry room and hot showers for visiting yachts. At sunset during the season, a pomp-and circumstance flag lowering ceremony is followed by a weather forecast over the dock loudspeaker, complete with the chilly temperatures in less fortunate cities around the world, which always brings laughter to the docks. As night fell, the lights of the Hotel de Haro went on, turning the manicured gardens and walkways into a miniature Tivoli Gardens of the Northwest. The days that followed merged into a pleasant blur of sun, forest, and water. We stopped at Jones Island which still bears the scars of a devastating storm, but the

fallen trees were balanced by a family of tame deer that were delighted to eat grapes and a banana from our hands. Their soft eyes watched us leave empty-handed except for the banana peel, but we were the mournful ones after we encountered a park ranger later who told us the deer think the banana peel is a great dessert delicacy. Sorry, guys. Where should you go first? I like Roche and Friday Harbors, Jones and James Islands have pastoral settings, Sucia is quiet and protected and so is Stuart, and then there’s that one little cove that I’m not going to share because I want to keep it to myself. But there are 450 other islands for you to enjoy at high tide, and you’re sure to find your own favorites.

LOOKING BACK AT HISTORICAL WOMEN March is Women’s History month and for the 50th Anniversary edition of the Log, we are looking back on prominent women who made it into our pages. BY: JORDAN B. DARLING CALIFORNIA— Women’s history month began as a single week in 1982 and progressed into a full month after a petition in 1987 from the National Women’s History Project convinced Congress to pass resolutions requesting that the President proclaim the month of March as Women’s History Month. After a series of additional resolutions from Congress between 1988 and 1994, the President of the United States began to issue an annual proclamation to designate March as National Women’s History Month, according to the Women’s History Month website. Journalism allows reporters to become the flies on the wall and recorders of history, in this segment we are reliving historical moments created by women that the Log has covered in the past 50 years.

In 1978, a 203-year tradition of exclusively male crews on naval vessels was broken when eight women joined the ranks of sailors on five different sea-going vessels. The headline made the front page of the Log for the November issue. The eight women, all ensigns, reported for sea duty on Nov. 1, 1978, until that moment women had only served on hospital ships and on transports vessels. Two of the five vessels, the USS Dixon, a submarine, and the USS Norton Sound, a seaplane tender, were homeported here in Southern California. The three sailors that reported for duty on the West Coast were Ensign Bobbie McIntyre, Ensign Macushla McCormick aboard the USS Dixon, and Ensign Charlene Albright aboard the USS Norton Sound. McIntyre served as the operations officer and assistant navigator while McCormick served as the weapons quality assurance officer. Fast forward to 1983 and staff writer Lucy McBride covered the first Women’s Offshore Clinic sponsored by the United States Yacht Racing Union. The clinic was hosted at the San Diego Yacht Club and was attended by 70 women from all over the U.S. The clinic was directed by the 1982 National Sailboard Champion Anne Gardner. Gardner went on to compete in the

1984 Olympic Sailing Team and took a silver medal for boardsailing and now holds five world titles and 17 national and international titles, according to the TeamUSA 11 website. The same year a Point Loma woman Tami Lee Oldham survived 41 days at sea in a battered yacht after her partner was swept overboard in 110-knot winds and 35-foot waves. Oldham and her fiancé Richard Sharp met, fell in love, and took off to sail around the world aboard the Hazaña when they were caught in a storm and Sharp was swept overboard. Oldham survived 41 days at sea alone before being rescued by a Japanese research vessel. Oldham turned her story into a book in 2002, Red Sky at Morning, and the book was turned into a movie titled Adrift with Shailene Woodley in 2018. In 1992, Assemblymember Doris Allen was honored for her conservation work towards the gill net ban by the International Game Fish Association. Allen led the charge in the 90s gathering 600,000 signatures to put Proposition 132 on the 1990 November ballot. The proposition established the Marine Protection Zone within three miles of the coast of Southern California;

Prohibited the use of gill and trammel nets beginning in Jan. 1994; Required additional permit use for gill and trammel nets between Jan. 1991 and Dec. 1993; Required the purchase of a $3 marine protection stamp for fishermen within the protection zone; Established a permit fee and $3 sportfishing marine protection stamp fee to provide compensation for fishermen for loss of permits after Jan. 1994; And directed the Fish and Game Commission to establish four new ocean water ecological reserves for marine research, according to Ballotpedia. Allen served in the California Assembly from 1982 to 1995 and was the first woman to be elected as the Speaker in 1995 according to the Los Angeles Times. Her work on the gill net ban has a bit of a legacy as the ban on drift-gill nets was passed and is set to be enacted in California by 2023. 44  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL/MAY 2021

In 2016, Valerie Termini was hired as the first female Executive Director for the Fish and Game Commission. Termini succeeded Sonke Mastrup whose role came to an end in Dec. 2015. Previously serving as the fisheries policy advisor and interim executive director of the California Ocean Protection Council, Termini began her role on May 16, 2016, and held the role until 2019 when Governor Gavin Newsom appointed her chief deputy director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The Log is proud to have enshrined the accomplishments of these women in its pages over the past 50 years and continues to cover women making history in sailing, fishing, and boating in Southern California to this day.

Poolside at Humphreys Half Moon Inn

IF YOU’RE NOT FROM SAN Diego, there is a good change you have never heard of Shelter Island. So, while in San Diego on work assignment, I decided to check the place out and so happy that I did. This is such a unique place with a very interesting past and present. Shelter Island is one of San Diego’s principal boating centers with welcoming recreational amenities for all. Located in the neighborhood of Point Loma, Shelter Island is not actually an island, but a narrow strip of land a few hundred feet wide and only 1.2 miles long with a single street, Shelter Island Drive, that runs the length of the island and connects to the mainland. Once a mere mudbank formed out of deposits and soil from the San Diego River and visible only at low tide, was dredged up during World War II to accommodate larger ships. The San Diego Harbor Commission’s dredging program connected the bank and mainland providing a new entrance to the yacht basin and Shelter Island was born. A Polynesian theme was chosen for the Island and by the 1950s the Island had taken on a whole new life catering to the maritime industry. Stinking to its roots, you will be pleasantly surprised that the Island continues to honor that tradition. There are four hotel/ resorts on Shelter Island, all of which are

unique and have excellent amenities. I myself decided on Humphreys Half Moon Inn for a weekend of adventure. As soon as I entered the lobby, I felt like I was

transported to the South Pacific. There is a Polynesian vibe throughout the entire grounds, and a feeling of tropical paradise as you sit by the café, pool and fire pits. The resort also offers up Humphreys Concerts By the Bay, an outdoor venue overlooking the water, providing some of San Diego’s best live entertainment April through October. After enjoying a complimentary cocktail, Bella and I were off to explore just what the Island had to offer. Right across from the Inn is Shelter Island Walkway with views of downtown San Diego. It’s the perfect place to bike, run or walk your dog. While walking the 2.3-mile loop, I noticed seven notable art sculptures strategically placed for your visual excitement, including

The bar, known as Christians Hut, is named after Clark Gables character, Fletcher Christian. The movie wrapped in 1935 and the bar was moved to Newport Beach CA and spawned a franchise. None of the other locations still exist except the one on Shelter Island, which became known as Bali Hai in 1954. It remains one of the oldest and largest original mid-century Tiki establishments in the world and a world-famous San Diego landmark. Bali Hai means “your own special island”, making its location even more perfect. The food is top notch, but Bali Hai is better known for their signature drinks. To date, they have sold over 2.5 million Mai Tais and still going strong. And when I say strong, I mean that literally, limited 2 per person!

Looking for something a little lower key but just as unique, check out Fathom Bistro, Bait and Tackle located on Shelter Island Pier. Another example of what makes Shelter Island a destination to put on your “to do list”. Fathom Bistro is San Diego’s only Tap House on the water. Where the kegs are stored in the water for coldness and 15 craft beers on tap, it’s a great place for weekend brunch or try one of their homemade sausages and watch the sunset. Whatever your likings, you will find it on Shelter Island. As the weekend came to a close and coffee in order, a chocolate iced mocha and Lox Lover’s Bagel hit the spot at Portside Coffee and Gelato. Located at the entrance of Shelter Island, this cute outdoor café was the perfect way to end our quick escape. Shelter Island dubbed by the media in the 1960s as “a testimonial to human ingenuity”, “something from nothing” and “a man-made wonderland of sub-tropical splendor “and from my experience still holds true today. Shelter Island is a beautiful intoxicating little piece of paradise and I look forward to my next visit.

DON’T MISS LIST 2021 NORDHAVN RENDEZVOUS - NAPS MAY 7 – 9 IN POULSBO, WA NAPS (Nordhavn’s Around Puget Sound) was started in 2018 by Kevin and Alison Jeffries as a fun way to cross paths with other Nordhavn boat owners in the Pacific Northwest. The first and second years were potluck dinners with 9 boats attending in 2018 (Port Ludlow) and 19 boats in 2019 (Anacortes). Sadly, the 2020 Rendezvous that was to be held in Victoria, BC had to be canceled due to COVID. This year, the Rendezvous will take place in Poulsbo, WA and has 36 Nordhavns of all sizes confirmed to be in attendance with 10 other Nordhavn boat owners flying in to participate in the festivities. TOLLYCRAFTERS NORTHWEST CELEBRATES 36 YEARS Tollycraft Northwest (TNW) is celebrating 36 years on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers this year. Formed in 1985 as a “Why Not” idea for all Tollycraft owners. It started as a forum to get together and share ideas regarding our boats and the changes that owners have made to improve their boats. Tollycrafts Northwest members have a wealth of information regarding where to get parts and upgrades for the Tollycraft line of boats. Size of boats in our club range from the 17-foot Runabout to the 48-foot CPMY and many sizes in-between. TNW has cruises each month, starting in March and ending in October, cruising to destinations both on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. We have

no clubhouse; we are a cruising club and many of our club members are members of other yacht clubs in the Portland/ Vancouver area. Many owners cruise up north and/or fish during the summers at the coast, and many of the TNW members are Christmas Ship participants in one of the longest Christmas Ship parades in the

nation. If you are looking to add something interesting to your Tollycraft boating experience, please contact us for further information. For further information please contact Past Commodore/Membership Lois Simmons at (360) 835-2666 or at hiouchi@comcast.net.

ASK A BROKER

HAVE A QUESTION?

Please send your questions to: seaeditor@goboating.com (please indicate Ask a Broker in the subject line).

BROKERAGE ADVICE

APRIL/MAY’S QUESTION: Q Buying a boat entails writing some rather large checks. How do I know those funds are safe?

Yacht sales professionals will safeguard funds in an escrow account. They will assure that any existing loan or other encumbrances will be paid off, or otherwise satisfied, at the time of closing and that no other liabilities remain outstanding. This is critically important to the buyer and the seller, and can be a potentially serious hazard in a private transaction not involving a broker. Answer from Certified Professional Yacht Brokers (cpyb.net)

Q

If a broker represents both parties to a transaction,

does he get paid twice? Since the member may be representing one or more parties to a transaction, he should not accept compensation from more than one party under any circumstance, without the full knowledge of all parties to the transaction. Answer from the California Yacht Brokers Association (cyba.info) Code of Ethics, Section 3, Dual-Agency

Q

How difficult is it really to set a yacht’s sales price? All I need to do is look at comparable vessels on the market.

establish the fair market value of a boat to help you determine a fair asking price or a realistic offer price. There is a bit of an art in pricing a boat. A professional broker will know comparable boats and where a specific boat fits in the marketplace. If you are a seller working on your own, improper pricing means fewer qualified buyers will be attracted to your boat and it will likely sit on the market piling up expenses without selling. A realistic price is one of the keys to successfully selling a boat. Anyone can look up asking prices on boats in the marketplace, but it takes someone in the business to accurately assess all the factors that determine the value of a specific boat (e.g., condition, outfitting, location) and to be familiar with selling prices.
