ALOHA (ALSO MEANS HELLO) ALOHA!

Veteran Sea Magazine Managing Editor Mike Werling, who steered this ship for the past 10 years, has decided to jump, but not without training me to take over his duties these past few weeks. Bon voyage, Mike! And good luck at your next port of call! Born in San Francisco and raised primarily in Southern California, I am the son and grandson of U.S. Navy veterans. My grandfather served on the USS Navajo, a tug whose sailors helped with the salvage operations after Pearl Harbor, and my father served in communications on various U.S. Navy ships, and on Midway Island in the late 1950s. As a navy brat, I’ve had the opportunity to live in a few places: California, Utah, Hawaii and the Philippines. With a family summer home in Hawaii, I often hang out with my friend Mark Guerin on his Albin 36, moored in the Ala Wai yacht harbor. I’ve also cruised Manila Bay and of course, Newport Harbor, where I spent many a summer fishing as a kid; as an adult, I’ve often cruised the harbor on my Seaswirl Striper. For most of my life, I have lived close to the ocean, as it is where I feel most at home. My conservation and advocacy work includes coastal cleanups and writing for Clean our Oceans Project, a non-governmental organization based in the Philippines that works to reduce the amount of plastics that end up in our oceans. CoOp collects, cleans 6

and segregates plastic water and soda bottles, shampoo and coffee sachets, and other plastic recyclables, and then upcycles them into durable goods such as school desks and chairs. In recent years, I’ve learned to scuba dive as well, seeing the world below the surface that most of us cruise and recreate on top of. Some of the sea life you see underwater is just breathtaking. I worked as a writer and editor during the early days of the desktop computer and digital camera revolution, handled some fairly large constricting snakes as the web editor for REPTILES magazine, and even smoked some Cubans while managing the website for Cigar & Spirits magazine. I look forward to the opportunity to get out on the ocean on the latest class of 45-footers and call it a job (Thanks, Mike!), and learn more along the way about what is arguably one of the most interesting industries in the world. I anticipate this ride to be challenging and productive, and a “hull” of a good time (not too late!). I look forward to working with the freelancers, manufacturers and icons who have helped shape the pages of this soon-to-be 112-year-old storied magazine. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to drop me a note at jvirata@seamagazine.com. I look forward to hearing from you. Mahalo!

A NEW LEADER FOR THE SQUAD

SWANKY NEW BRIT debuted in Cannes, France, earlier this fall. Flagship of the Fairline Yachts Squadron range, the Squadron 68 combines the best features of its two smaller predecessors and adds another 15 feet to accommodate up to 10 passengers in comfort and fashionable luxury.

Designed by Alberto Mancini, the Squadron 68 takes its exterior play areas seriously. The aft cockpit is built for entertaining while the bow showcases an expansive sunpad and lounge, which could host their own separate party. However, the real attraction is up top on the flybridge where folks on the forward sunpad can keep the captain company while guests at the dinette amidships have a perfect dinner spot. If someone’s feeling antisocial or contemplative, he can move to the aft lounge, which has a view of the wake trailing behind. When it’s time to entertain inside, the single-level salon with 360-degree views and a highgloss finish won’t disappoint. The aft galley is well situated for serving people both inside and out, and the two-seat helm station in the opposite forward corner is a high-tech wonder with triple multifunction displays and every other gauge and bit of gear within easy reach. Below, buyers have a choice of three or four cabins, including a full-beam master amidships and separate crew quarters aft of the engine room. Like all models in the haute couture Squadron range, the 68 offers four interior décor schemes from which to choose, and they carry fantasy-inducing names such as Amalfi, The Hamptons, Capri and St. Tropez. Each color and pattern combination will make passengers think they’ve sailed to one of these lovely destinations to enjoy summer wines and local cuisine. MEXICO REPORT

By CAPT. PAT RAINS

With proper logistics and a plan, everyone can enjoy the convenience and joy of this nautical adventure.

ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN putting off invit-

ing friends or family to travel down to the boat in Mexico should consider now to be the time. The widest range of cruising grounds opens for what’s called “winter” in Mexico, exactly when everyone would love to flee chillier climes up north.

WHY IT’S DIFFERENT

Mexico’s traditional December and January holidays provide a welcome contrast to the “wanton commercialism” we all disparage — but can’t avoid. Instead of constant exhortations to “buy, buy, buy,” the theme south of the border is more refreshing, with constant reenactments of stories about Mary, Joseph and the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Mexican villagers trek up to the mountains to cut wagonloads of pine boughs and dig up living Christmas

trees, carting them back so the whole community can turn out to decorate the plazas, churches and parade routes with fragrant green foliage. Decking the halls is a time-honored tradition, before the tinsel and strings of lights go up. Crèches and Virgins of Guadalupe (patron saint of Mexico) are more common than plastic Santa Clauses. December is when special Christmas foods appear in the markets and restaurants, such as Noche Buena beer, Navidad pork tamales steamed in banana leaves and stuffed with pineapple or guava, spicy green or red pozole soups, champurrado chocolate drink, and Rosca de los Reyes (bread of the kings).

WHERE TO TAKE GUESTS

Plan A: In this active itinerary, crews will spend each day fishing, diving, hiking or cruising to the next anchorage, and

every night swinging on the hook somewhere new and exciting. From Los Cabos or La Paz, it’s best to run up the Baja side of the Sea of Cortez, cross over to San Carlos or Topolobampo, then run down the mainland side and cross back to the starting point. This works well with guests who are physically agile, and if they aren’t already boat savvy, they may at least enjoy learning and sharing the daily tasks. Plan B: Relaxation is the rule for Plan B. Keep the boat in a comfy marina the whole time guests are aboard — maybe a week. Every day, whoever wants to can step off the boat merely to walk around the marina grounds, sample nearby restaurants and perhaps take a taxi to see the local sights. Entertaining two-week guests might entail a move to another marina area for the second week. This plan is ideal for pleasant nautical ports such as Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, La Paz, San Carlos, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Barra de Navidad, Ixtapa and Acapulco. Plan C: This is a blend of Plans B and C. An example of a good location for Plan C is the 115-mile route from La Paz up to Puerto Escondido. Mix a couple of leisurely

cruise days with two- and three-day stops in the more interesting anchorages, giving guests a look at what life is like overnight on the hook. Try to begin and end with a couple of days docked in full-service marinas. This also works from Mazatlan down to Puerto Vallarta, or along the Gold Coast from Manzanillo to Acapulco.

FLY THEM DOWN

Guests who will be enjoying a loop itinerary probably need a simple round-trip ticket from the U.S., such as from LAX to Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta, the latter of which is an easy airline destination from most major U.S. cities. It has a choice of comfy marinas and several interesting anchorages are within a day’s motor along the south side of Banderas Bay. At the end of their visit, guests can fly north on the second half of their round-trip ticket. If, however, the plan calls for a one-way cruise from, for example, Puerto Vallarta straight up the mainland coast to Mazatlan — a nice resort port with several marinas — plan to pick up guests in PV and cruise them north for seven to 10 days. Visit several pleasant stops and then arrive in Mazatlan, from where they can fly back to the U.S. For such an itinerary, they’ll want to book

two flights, such as one-way from LAX to Puerto Vallarta and then one-way from Mazatlan to LAX. That may be more convenient and save everyone time and hassle by avoiding a redundant backtrack leg by boat or bus. Generally, I try to avoid flying through Mexico City due to long layover times. Guests who are intrepid travelers might consider booking on Volaris or Calafia airlines, which start in Tijuana at the Cross Border Express (CBX). For an extra $20, passengers simply walk from the U.S. directly into the Tijuana airport in Mexico and vice versa on their return, thereby avoiding long border lines.

WHAT TO BRING

Every person must have a passport that’s valid for at least 30 days. The other piece of paperwork each visiting tourist must obtain is a one-page FMM form (formerly known as a “tourist card”). It’s good for up to 180 days but it’s “single entry,” not valid for multiple entries. Airlines, bus lines and border crossings give arriving visitors a blank FMM to be filled out before they go through the Aduana (Customs) gate. Directions are on the form, but in the Residence in Mexico field, they’ll need to write the name of your marina, such as Marina CostaBaja in La Paz. Prescription medicines from home? Yes, a personal supply of up to 30 days is legal to carry through the Aduana. Anything narcotic must be accompanied by a paper prescription in the guest’s name. Tell them what kind of clothing to pack based on the itinerary. Mexico is mostly tropical, but Copper Canyon is at a higher elevation and gets chilly, so they’ll need jackets, socks and sturdy shoes if it’s on the itinerary. If they won’t have access to a clothes washer for a couple of weeks, they should bring hand-washable items. Will the host supply everything — dive fins, masks, snorkel tubes, fishing rods and reels — or do they need to bring their own? Gifts need to be unwrapped before they pass through inspections, as in the U.S., so if you’re immediately whisking guests away to remote places, they might want to pack empty gift bags, wrapping paper and tape.

NEXT-GEN DIESELS

The manufacturer’s popular D4 and D6 diesels get serious upgrades.

SWEDEN’S VOLVO PENTA TOOK a good idea and made it better — and not just by a little. More than 100,000 units of these models have been produced, and Volvo’s D4 and D6 diesels have just been through a comprehensive helm-to-prop redesign, including increased power and reliability and a significant reduction in operating costs — by as much as a third, in some cases.

These overhauled engines are offered for inboard, pod drive and sterndrive applications, and the newly introduced benefits cover almost every aspect, including performance, durability, running costs and ongoing maintenance. The 3.7L D4 now has a maximum output of 320 hp, while the 5.5L D6 delivers up to 480 hp. Both numbers represent approximately a 10 percent increase at the top end over the previous two versions. Most of the engine components were reengineered to deliver more torque but not at the expense of fuel consumption. In fact, the new engines are on average 1 to 7 percent more fuel efficient than their predecessors. The new upgrades include changes in the fuel-injection system and a new turbocharger and supercharger. The cylinder head, pistons and valves have been enhanced to manage the increased performance, and the crankshaft was

also strengthened to handle bigger loads. Additionally, new high-pressure pumps and a new air filtration system were added. Perhaps of greatest importance to boaters is that these engines will cost less service intervals. longer carry and to maintain The IPS driveline was updated for greater durability and reliability, and the inboard version is available for shaft or water-jet transmissions. By far, the biggest differences were made in the sterndrive version. The DPI Aquamatic features a hydraulic clutch that boasts smooth and silent shifting. Steer-by-w ire is now standard for DPI, and with the hydraulic clutch, joystick docking has been improved. Dynamic positioning functionality is an option too. Volvo Penta’s EVC2 centralizes information into one connection point for software downloads and diagnostics. The integrated “On-Board Service Assistant” provides maintenance information such as time to the next needed service. This works well for boat owners to remind them of their maintenance schedule, and it’s a plus for boat builders, who are always looking to simplify the design process and experience fewer warranty issues in the future. Each of the D4 and D6 propulsion packages comes as a complete system. Installation has been simplified but the dimensions remain mostly the same as with the previous generation, so anyone in need of a repower is likely to find the new engines will fit. Both models are available in 12v or 24v.

THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA is privileged to have two free ferryboat systems. One is across the river in the area where I used to live, the other just northeast in an equally tiny area. The ferries connect two relatively vibrant promontories that, without the ferries, would be 35 miles apart. With the ferries, the distance can be covered in about 15 minutes if you time your arrival well. When I began driving in 1960, boys of my age considered it romantic to take our date on the last boat ride over and then “run out of gas” on the 35-mile ride home. The ferry boat at that time was a 25-foot workboat named Arminta Arminta, powered by a slant-six Chrysler engine and tied beside a flat barge capable of carrying perhaps three vehicles and passengers. Good ol’ Pat would attach bow and stern, and with a perpetual smile, head for the other side of the river. Just before he got there, he’d chop the throttle, swing Arminta around, reattach the bow and stern lines so he was headed the other direction, apply power (his “reverse” for the barge) and ease the barge into the slip, allowing vehicles to drily disembark. Lest you envision this as having excessive latitude for error, an underwater cable was attached to the barge, allowing for no drift or turns from one side to the other. In the early 1980s, the state determined it most efficient to replace Arminta with the type of ferry used in Massachusetts: a wide barge with a pilothouse midway on one side. The powerplant was a 4-53 Detroit Diesel with a rotating drive assembly mounted just about directly below the engine. The operator — remember, the ferry went both directions guided by the underwater cable — used a joystick to spin the drive around when he got to the end of the cable, so the passengers could debark. Well, that was the theory. In actuality, most operators didn’t understand the dash gauge that showed the position of the drive unit. The cable had just enough slack to allow the boat to have its own mind at either end, just not the middle. Exorbitant amounts of money were spent getting the myriad operators to comprehend the gauge. No luck. The rides became more exciting, the landing repairs more expensive. Finally, Occam’s Razor: one of the V-DOT welders came to the barge and welded a vertical rod to the top of the drive unit, then welded an arrow to the top of the rod. As the operator moved the joystick, the arrow’s direction responded. Trips became boring, and less expensive for the Commonwealth! I took the ferry today for the first time in about 10 years. I noticed the arrow was no longer there. In its place was a laughing gull, telling the operator in no uncertain terms how to pilot the boat! The gull directed the operator the entire trip, then departed. I hope the ferry’s return trip was safe. SEAMAGAZINE.COM DECEMBER 2019

VIKING 46 BILLFISH This midsize convertible melds fishing features and cruising amenities.

VIKING’S NEW 46 BILLFISH overflows with bluewater DNA, long the hallmark of the company’s 55-year heritage. Beautifully proportioned with a graceful sheer line that complements the flybridge, deckhouse, accommodations and cockpit, this new Viking redefines the purpose of the midsize convertible yacht, with features and performance that not only satisfy offshore fishermen with tournament mettle, but equally appease casual cruisers longing to rack up hours of water time in total comfort.

Well suited for an owner/operator, the 46 Billfish is equipped for offshore duties. Its 140-square-foot cockpit includes a molded nonskid surface for solid footing, scuppers in the corners, an average depth of 26 inches and a 35-inch reach to the waterline for fast marlin releases. Four flush rod holders are standard, and the cabin-side haunches have room for three more per side. A pair of 52-inch by 19-inch by 17-inch insulated fishboxes in the sole

handle the catch of the day or serve as stowage compartments. A walkthrough transom door with a lift gate and a transom livewell are standard. A deck hatch provides access to the bilge to reach the Seastar Optimus steering ram, as well as plumbing fittings for the bilge, the high water alarm, fishbox macerators, and livewell pumps. The bilge area is finished with bright white Awlgrip, and the workmanship throughout is top notch.

Well suited for an owner-operator and featuring a fully outfitted helm that includes Palm Beachstyle controls, the 46 Billfish is equipped for offshore duties.

FISHING ARENA

The observation mezzanine is equipped with port and starboard seating. Thick cushions keep anglers comfortable as they watch the baits in the wake, and the flybridge overhang protects them from sun and spray. Our test boat had the available air-conditioning vents built into the bridge overhang, which should deliver plenty of chilled breeze between bites and are a nice touch for fishing in tropical waters. In cold weather, the cycle can be reversed to deliver warm air. A large refrigerated box is built into the starboard mezzanine step, while underneath the seat is a clever arrangement of tackle drawers and a bank of Dometic controls for refrigeration. On the port side is a large freezer with a removable upper tray for the day’s bait, and a separate insulated stowage compartment below. Beneath the port coaming is a manifold that facilitates lube oil transfer from the engines and generator via quick-disconnect fittings. Nearby, other quick-disconnect fittings accommodate a dockside freshwater inlet, and fresh- and raw-water outlets. A pair of 24v 30-amp outlets beneath the coaming serves as power sources for electric kite reels. Tricolor LED lighting illuminates under the coaming and flybridge overhang.

INSIDE

A Costa Clear three-panel enclosure keeps the weather out of the salon command-deck area, which features 80 inches of headroom from the sole to the fiberglass headliner. I would consider putting a grabrail in the overhead for added security. A flat-screen TV on the starboard bulkhead, stereo speakers and a stowage cabinet to port add convenience and entertainment. A U-shaped vinyl-cushioned lounge to port features a fiberglass highlow table, and a second lounge to starboard includes rod stowage and offers extra napping room. Each lounge rises on an electrically actuated lift to provide access to the machinery compartment. Our test boat, which was headed for Costa Rica, had a pair of MAN I6 800 mhp diesels, a 13.5 kw Kohler generator

Despite the amount of machinery, the overall installations were quite neat, so most daily checks — oil, Racor fuel filters and raw-water strainers — could be accomplished via a centerline hatch between the engines. As in the lazarette, the engineroom is finished with white Awlgrip and the valves and fittings are clearly labeled for ease of operation and routine maintenance. A ladder or step would be a nice addition for entering and leaving the engine compartment.

The interior benefits from the 15-foot 4-inch beam and 6-foot 4-inch clearance to maximize living and sleeping space. LED lighting creates a nighttime spectacle on the flybridge and in the cockpit.

ACCOMMODATIONS

A powder-coated aluminum and glass bi-fold door leads below, into a plush environment. At the bottom of the teak staircase, the interior takes advantage of the 15-foot, 4-inch beam and 6-foot, 4-inch clearance to maximize living and sleeping space. To starboard, the galley features plenty of teak cabinetry and drawers with maple-lined interiors. Polished Corian countertops brighten the interior and meld nicely with the Majilite headliner and the Amtico vinyl flooring. The galley is equipped with a Samsung microwave/convection oven, a Kenyon two-burner electric cooktop, an Isotherm drawer-style refrigerator and freezer, and a stainless steel sink. An electrical panel on the aft bulkhead is full height for easy monitoring. To port, the generously proportioned head is air conditioned and has a fiberglass shower stall with a light, Corian countertop and sink over the vanity and a Dometic portable toilet. Forward of the head are upper and lower bunks. The air-conditioned private master stateroom is in the bow.

It features an island queen bed, a pair of maple-lined hanging lockers, starboard hullside cabinetry, a Samsung 32-inch flatscreen TV, a CD/DVD player and a stereo. Natural ventilation is provided by an overhead Bomar hatch. An alternate version in this stateroom offers crossover berths.

UP TOP

The flybridge on the Viking 46 Billfish features the builder’s signature layout: a center console helm, a forward-facing lounge and flanking lounges. The low profile of the console does not give passengers much to hold on to, so I would add grabrails on each side of the console for more security. A Release Marine teak ladder-back helm seat gives the operator an unobstructed 360-degree view and a comfortable perch that reduces fatigue on long runs. The faux-teak fiberglass helm pod includes a stainless-steel wheel and single-lever Palm Beach-style ZF engine controls with Side Power bow-thruster buttons built into the handles. A raised fiberglass dash is home to a pair of 17-inch Garmin navigation screens, and additional electronics and engine instrumentation are installed in the hardtop overhead. Navigation, communication and entertainment systems are factory installed while the boat is on the production line, thanks to Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics, which provides turnkey delivery.

TEST TIME

With a light breeze from the southeast, the ocean off Atlantic City, N.J., provided modest seas of 2 feet, with an occasional 3-footer. A touch of trim with the tabs kept the prow in the water, and the raked entry maneuvered through the slop nicely. Top speed approached 39 knots with four people aboard, full water and approximately 400 gallons of fuel. While this speed is helpful while racing the clock to be at the weigh-in dock in time, midrange

performance is especially notable. At 1435 rpm, the boat recorded 20.7 knots and the twin MAN diesels burned 30 gph, delivering a range of 440 n.m. based on 90 percent of the 709-gallon fuel capacity. At 1600 rpm and 25 knots, the engines consumed

Handling is impressive and response is quick and definitive. 36 gph, for a range of 443 miles. Running 30 knots at 1800 rpm, the MANs drank 44 gph, providing a 435-mile range. At wide-open throttle, 2340 rpm, the engines consumed 80 gph, for a range of 311 miles. Clearly, the MAN engines are the right choice for the 46 Billfish. Handling is equally impressive. The response is quick and definitive — the wheel goes five and a half turns lock to lock — and makes it a fun boat to operate. Buyers will certainly want autopilot but its sporty behavior is enjoyable. At cruise

som crown worked nicely to move water away from the stern. Like all Viking models, the 46 Billfish is built using composite construction with closed-cell foam and end-grain balsa coring in its layup. Foam coring also is used in the command deck floor above the engines to provide thermal and acoustical insulation. Fuel tanks are molded fiberglass, designed and built in-house, as is 90 percent of the boat, to ensure quality control and advanced engineering by Viking’s design group.

SEA TRIAL

By CAPT. TOM SERIO

SIRENA 64

Italian styling and Turkish craftsmanship combine in a family cruiser. “NEITHER SNOW NOR R AIN nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from

the swift completion of their appointed rounds” is the unofficial motto of the U.S. Postal Service. I think marine industry writers and boat reviewers should have a similar motto: “Neither size of seas nor strength of wind nor pelting of rains stays these sea trialers from their scheduled appointments.” We cannot always wait for perfect conditions and test boats on flat seas and in calm winds, like readers see in the photos that accompany a story. Due to builders’, brokers’ or our own schedule, we go when scheduled. Which brings us to the sea trial of the Sirena 64. Two weeks of steady 20- to 30-knot east winds caused erosion along the Florida shoreline and fetched sizable capped rollers, and the conditions persisted as I

tested the mettle of the new Sirena 64. Withholding a potential reputation for breaking new boats, I mentioned to Sirena Yachts Capt. Mike Giles that we may want to reconsider as we exited Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, into the frothy sea. Giles gave me a look that essentially said, “Are you kidding?” But he did say

Twin Cat C12.9 850 hp diesels are standard and are mounted in a V-drive configuration that results in more interior living space.

A very sharp axe bow cleanly slices the waves and a long and wide chine about halfway up the bow keeps the ride dry.

he recently undertook a sea trial in worse conditions, with an owner. “We hit close to 10-footers” he said, assuredly. Basically, this day was a walk in the park for the Sirena 64. Here’s a tip. Before you plunk down good coin for a boat, observe the hull. I was able to see the Sirena 64 on land a few days prior to our sea trial and had an idea how it would handle the 4- to 6-foot waves we experienced. A very sharp axe bow for entry is coupled to an aggressively long and wide chine that starts about halfway up the bow, creating a configuration that not only cleanly slices the waves but also reduces slamming and adds buoyancy. There’s no diving into the waves with green water crashing over the bow like in an old Navy movie. The bow stays up and the only water we received at the flybridge helm was from the wind-whipped spray. Most folks may not head out on a day like this, but if getting home is required, the Sirena 64 is up to the job. And for those calmer, flatter days, it’s a great platform for family and friends.

POWER UP

Powered by optional twin CAT C12.9 1,000 hp engines — standard are twin CAT C12.9 850 hp — we made good headway despite the tough conditions. We cruised at 16.4 knots at 1800 rpm, at which point the twin CATs were burning 53 gph total.

Pushing it, 2100 rpm yielded 22.6 knots, averaged on a reciprocal course, and an 80 gph fuel burn. Wide-open throttle, 2350 rpm, yielded 25.6 knots and a 100 gph burn. This is a touch lower than the spec sheet speed of 28 knots, but then again, in these conditions I was surprised to see what this yacht could do. On a calm day and with the ability to work the trim tabs, the Sirena 64 should easily attain 28 knots. Those CAT engines, by the way, are mounted in a V-drive configuration, which pushes them a little farther aft. The net

Calm conditions and trim tabs manipulation should enable the Sirena 64 to attain 28 result is more interior living space on the lower level, making the 64 feel larger. In the engine room, diamond-plate floor coverings provide sure footing. Daily maintenance items such as dipsticks and Racor and CAT fuel filters/water separators are easily accessible. Each floor plate has a small metal plate affixed to it that specifies what is below, removing the guessing game. If chosen, the optional Seakeeper stabilizer gyro is mounted centerline, creating a raised box that is also covered and can be walked on/over. The CATs are surrounded by safety rails, which serve to keep exposed

skin off the hot engines and offer a grab point. Beats touching a hot turbo.

MORE THAN A SLEEPING PLACE

Forward on the lower level are three staterooms (a fourth smaller room can be optioned and fits under the staircase). Amidships is the full-beam master. And its design is simple elegance. Large hullside windows — 22 inches high by 80 inches long — and 6 feet, 4 inches of headroom will cure any feelings of claustrophobia. The light and airy room is finished in light oak wood and fabrics. A portside full-length, contoured settee is great for private lounging. The master berth has storage below it, and a uniquely designed double-seat vanity runs along the starboard side. Full beam is the master head, with Corian countertops, his-and-her Vitra basin sinks with Artema faucets, a separate toilet room (Tecma toilet) and an oversized shower stall with teak benches and flooring. From the lower foyer, there’s access to the twin-bunk guest stateroom to port. A center nightstand, a hull window with an opening port, a hanging locker and 6 feet, 4 inches of headroom are essential. An en suite head includes a glass shower stall with a teak bench and flooring. Forward is the VIP, which features a centerline double berth with storage below, a locker, a vanity with a seat and an overhead hatch with a ladder for egress. “Why divide two key social areas by putting the galley aft?” he said, adding that with the galley forward to port, the salon/aft deck work in collaboration for guest enjoyment. Del Rosario also pointed out that the galley has a pass-through window and is open on the side, all of which can be enclosed by glass that becomes translucent at the touch of a button, as Sirena yachts are semicustom vessels. Using dual L-shaped sofas, wood flooring and Nubuk materials, Sirena creates a casual yet classy environment. (Nubuk is the outer side of a hide, while suede is the inner side. Nubuk is more durable and more expensive.)

Up top, the flybridge is a statement in comfort. Fitted with Miele appliances, the galley is fully functional thanks to the full refrigerator/freezer, a four-burner flat cooktop, a dishwasher and a microwave/convection oven. Twin Franke stainless sinks include an area for an angled dish drain. Good thinking. Across the galley is a glass dining table with a bench seat and chairs. Forward is a pantographic door for starboard deck access. The lower helm is to port and features a double-wide helm seat. An additional lounge seat next to the helm is perfect for guests. With a full array of electronics, including dual 10-inch Garmin GPSmap XSV displays, separate engine monitoring displays, thruster controls, left-side joystick and throttle controls, and every other required control, the helm is busy but functional. With a low-profile design at the helm and throughout the yacht, lines of sight are exceptional forward, sideways and even aft.

FLY HIGH

Up top, the flybridge is a statement in comfort. Passengers can dine at a large U-shaped settee with a teak table or relax on the sunpad next to the port-situated helm. The refrigerator/freezer console has a foldout countertop, which creates an L-shaped serving counter. An electric awning is built into the hybrid carbon-fiber hardtop. Buyers can add a crane and water toys on the flybridge aft deck.

NORDHAVN 41

Benefiting from more than 7 million miles of on-water experience, Nordhavn launches a new hull to replace the iconic N40. 40 became the fastest circumnavigating trawler, taking 172 days to circle the globe. How does one follow that? If you’re Nordhavn Yachts, you partner with Dutch design firm Vripack to build a new model from the keel up. Then you have the boat built in Turkey, giving new owners the option to cruise the Aegean Sea before shipping it home. SPECS Efficient, safe and sea-kindly, the N41 hull was developed to incorporate LOA 41 ft., 4 in. computational fluid dynamics and is powered by twin Beta Marine 75 hp diesels. Beam 13 ft., 11 in. With 900 gallons of fuel, the N41 is expected to have a range of 1,000 miles at 9 Draft 4 ft., 6 in. knots. Slowed down a little, to 6 knots, it will cruise 8,000 miles without a fill-up. Displacement Designed to CE Category A standards, the N41 can take on Force 8 winds 43,300 lbs. (more than 40 knots) and wave heights of more than 13 feet. In easier waters, its Fuel 900 gal. twin screws and thruster will make putting it in a tight slip a snap. Water 300 gal. The N41 comes packed with standard equipment including ABT Trac 220 Power Twin 75 hp Beta stabilizers with 6-square-foot fins, a Side Power bow thruster, 1,000 amps of Marine diesels AGM house batteries, a Nick Jackson 800-pound davit, 400 watts of flexible solar panels, a Revere four-person canister life raft and a full suite of Garmin electronics, including an engine room camera and an AIS transceiver. Since it’s a Nordhavn, the N41 is luxurious and comes in two configurations: an owners’ version with a single cabin and a walk-in closet, or with two staterooms. Hull #1 will debut at the Dusseldorf Boat Show in January 2020. Hull #2 has been laid up.

When room aboard is limited — it always is — small things that become big things are important. The StandUp by Loeva is constructed of a polymethyl methacrylate that is colorless and transparent. Paddlers can see through it into the water. How cool would that be if a whale or dolphin came along? Loeva isn’t revealing a price, but expect this board’s price to run into five figures.

Wood SUP ThreeBrothersBoards.com, $1,499 Space is at a premium on most boats, but man does a wooden standup paddleboard look great, even if it doesn’t fold or deflate. ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

DECEMBER’S QUESTION:

YOUR CREDIT HISTORY

will be reviewed for continuity and satisfactory repayment of present The boat loan decision and past credit process is simple and obligations, looking straightforward. There are for loan amounts two major aspects that comparable to are examined: You and your request. Of The Boat. particular interest will be the level of revolving debt (credit cards) you have and the limits of your credit cards, expressed as available credit. Another important factor is debt-to-income ratio. The lender will look at present monthly obligations and add the monthly payment for the boat loan (they also may add presumed operating and maintenance costs of the boat) to determine your monthly debt. This is compared with current income as stated on the credit application or verified in the tax returns. Your net worth may be considered for stability and as a secondary source of repayment. When it comes to “the boat,” the lender will verify that the selling price reflects a realistic market value of the vessel, your down payment meets their guidelines and is in line with your credit profile, and they are comfortable with the loan-to-value calculation. Other factors include the type and age of the boat you are buying. The lender will research the market value of your boat through various sources that include price guides, comparable boats on the market, and discussions with dealers or yacht brokers about the

boat. A marine survey by a professional marine surveyor is often required. This answer is excerpted from the National Marine Lenders Association’s Boat Loan Basics page at marinelenders.org/ resources-for-boat-buyers.

What are the most important components of a sales agreement/contract?

THE CARDINAL RULE is: get it in writing. Your broker will outline the terms of the sale in writing to protect your interests. That includes spelling out obligations that you and the seller have agreed to, and when these obligations will be fulfilled. It’s a legally binding contract of each party’s intentions. What your sales agreement and contract should contain: A description of the boat and engine (if it’s outboard powered), including the make, model, year, Hull Identification Number and (outboard) engine serial numbers. You can get the equipment list from the survey and the written specification sheet from your broker. This should include: The purchase price, including any deposits you have paid and how you will pay the balance — by cashier’s check, for example: •  Details about when and where the boat will be delivered and the sale finalized; •  Language specifying that the sale depends on a satisfactory survey and sea trial — and your ability to get acceptable financing and marine insurance. A statement confirming the boat is free of liens and encumbrances that might block the sale-the seller should also take responsibility for debts incurred during the seller’s ownership. The answer to this question is excerpted from the California Yacht Brokers Association’s Buy Smart guide, available to everyone at cyba.info.

Cruising with guests requires proper planning and polished procedures. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP

To assist in a successful visit, most boaters have guidelines to make visits go smoothly, because it’s all about being a good host.

+ Sea CARegionals 2.indd 1

10/30/19 2:56 PM

IF YOU HAVE A BOAT and cruise to interesting locations, sooner or later a family member or friend will want to join a cruise. Having guests aboard can be stressful. It requires forethought and adjustments in routine to ensure that it’s a fun visit for all. First, a caveat: If overnight guests aren’t your thing, no problem. Know what makes you happy and how you can share space. For many of us, boating is a way to escape — and that’s OK. For a successful experience with nonboating guests aboard, whether for a short tour of local waters or for an extended multiple-night excursion, managing expectations and fostering communication are important factors for success. To assist in a successful visit, most boaters have guidelines to make visits go smoothly, because it’s all about being a good host. For us, their first impression reminds us how

luggage; appropriate clothing, foul-weather gear, and even what you supply, such as lifejackets, towels, linens, sun and insect protection. Plus, make clear crew daily duties and responsibilities, from cleaning to tending lines.

WHAT THEY NEED & DON’T Space is limited on board, so guests need to bring their personal items in a soft-sided bag, such as a sports bag or day pack. On most boats each berth will have at least a drawer or two, or possibly some hanging locker space available for guests. Once the contents of the duffel bag are stowed away,

sunglasses, rain gear and sunscreen. Also, don’t forget the prescribed medications. If the experience is going outside the United States, guests need their passport and any other required documentation.

CLOTHING The temperature aboard tends to be several degrees cooler. In the Pacific Northwest, where we do our boating, we tell our guests it’s smart to bring a warm jacket, especially one that’s waterproof,

Discuss money issues prior to the visit so the crew understands fully their fiscal responsibilities. even if it’s the middle of summer. In California, summer isn’t always as warm as out-of-towners expect, especially at night on the water. We also suggest planning on dressing with layers. Non-marking softsoled shoes are a must, and deck shoes for safety reasons are preferred.

EXPENSES

Share the itinerary and activities with guests well ahead of time, and share where and when you can match their expectations.

As we all know, traveling by boat incurs more costs than living at home. On extended trips, although happy to share their boat, and all the toys that go with it, boaters appreciate their crew sharing in the expenses, such as provisions, fuel, moorage and so on. Discuss money issues prior to the visit so the crew understands fully their fiscal responsibilities.

N

FLOAT PLAN lucky we are to own a boat. It’s important to be clear with guests about the limitations of boat travel in order to keep expectations reasonable. Share the itinerary and activities with guests well ahead of time, and share when and where you can match their expectations. There is a whole spectrum of topics that should be discussed beforehand: soft rollup

CA-2

the soft-sided bag can be rolled up and stuffed into any nook or cranny to get it out of the way. Because of the limited space aboard, let guests know what to bring and what to leave behind. Power is generally limited, so curling irons and hair dryers should be left behind. Be sure they bring a camera with a charging cord and good polarized

Guests’ arrival and departure should be clarified before they leave home. Location of arrival and departure for visitors may differ, so flights or ferry times should be scheduled with some “weather time” built in as a buffer. Flexibility is key, because plans can and do change. Things happen, including weather and equipment failure. Keeping guests busy is also key. Most guests aren’t happy to spend lazy days

aboard doing next to nothing. Visit anchorages with plenty to do and rediscover some of your favorite places through their eyes.

ON ARRIVAL Once your guests arrive, make sure they have a space of their own and have a chance to stow their gear before giving them a quick tour of the boat and providing a thorough safety briefing before leaving the dock. Even seasoned boaters need to know about hazards and operations on a “new-to-them” boat. Walk guests through the boat and point out the location of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, flares, life jackets, EPIRBs, the VHF radio and the first-aid kit. And ensure they know how to use them. Go over sensitive systems such as life jacket fitting and operation, EPIRBs, head use and how to make a mayday call on the VHF. Some skippers like to conduct a man-overboard drill. Yes, it’s rare for someone to fall in the water, but preparation can make the difference if it happens. Explain what’s off limits. We prefer guests not mess with the GPS, chartplotter or radar, so there’s no risk of deleting or reprograming our routes, waypoints or settings.

HEAD OPERATIONS The last thing any captain wants to experience is a clogged head. Nothing will spoil a cruise for owners and guests faster than a broken toilet. Demonstrate the proper operation of the head, even if the guests are seasoned boaters. Different marine toilet systems vary, and each has its idiosyncrasies. A good basic rule to share with guests is never flush anything that you haven’t first eaten, unless it’s marine system–approved toilet paper. This is also a good time to explain the tankage limitations for the black water and fresh water.

WATER IS PRECIOUS Even on large yachts the freshwater supply is limited. It’s easy for guests to be unaware of this, since they don’t worry too much about it at home. Another concern is hot water, since the hot-water tank on a boat is much smaller than the one in their home and it takes some form of power — electric, diesel, propane — to

GET TO KNOW

NEWPORT HARBOR ENTRANCE AS BIG AS NEWPORT HARBOR is, it has but one entrance, between Corona Del Mar State Beach and the Wedge. Constant boat traffic is a given at the harbor mouth, and the jetties are usually topped by anglers looking for lunch or dinner.

THE BELL BUOY marking the entrance is at 33 degrees 35.06 minutes north, 117 degrees, 52.69 minutes west.

THE GREEN LIGHT on the west jetty flashes every six seconds. THE RED LIGHT on the east jetty flashes every four seconds. SPEED DROPS TO 5 mph immediately upon entry into the harbor. NO FEWER THAN eight sea lions usually occupy the buoy’s base. How they all fit, we

don’t know.

heat it. Explain to new crewmembers it is appropriate to shower in “installments” to both reduce the quantity of water they use and conserve the hot water supply, so the rest of the crew can take a hot shower too. This just means they get wet first, then turn off the water while they shampoo and lather, then turn the water back on to rinse. It might seem a bit awkward at first, but they will get used to it, and it will keep fellow crewmembers happy.

POWER CONSERVATION If the cruise is planned for longer than an afternoon, skippers need to explain the need for power conservation. Avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer unnecessarily. Turn on lights only when needed, and turn them off when not needed. Remind guests that charging cellphones and computers uses power. Small appliances are not to be used unless the boat is plugged into shore power or the generator is running. If you are like us — our cruising lives revolve around daylight, early to rise and early to bed — and a guest is a night owl, suggest he bring a head lamp rather than drain the ship’s batteries by staying up all night.

LIFE ABOARD Most boats have what we refer to as a “one-butt galley.” If guests would like to help in preparing meals, there’s nothing wrong with allowing them to help prepare some of the meals or doing the dishes. We have heard stories of guests eating and drinking food that was for particular occasions or for when the next crew came aboard. It may be necessary to explain which provisions are available for consumption on which days.

DEPARTURE & ARRIVAL When it’s time to push off the dock, the guests are usually anxious to help toss lines or lift fenders, but leaving the slip is not as easy as pulling the car out of the garage and heading down the road. Many skippers will ask their visitors to sit and relax while they work through various steps, sometimes in a specific order, to ensure the safety of the vessel and crew. The same holds true when docking or anchoring.

retired from his position as harbor operations manager for Santa Barbara Harbor. After almost 20 years with the harbor, Kronman plans to write, speak and spend more time with his wife. During his tenure with the harbor, he was involved with several lasting projects, including the Clean Marinas Program, the revamping of the Harbor Festival, the developments of the Lost at Sea Memorial and others. No replacement has been named yet.

NB HARBOR DEPARTMENT GETS NEW BOATS

TO REPLACE TWO catamarans the city was renting from a nonprofit, the Newport Beach Harbor Department bought two new fiberglass monohull boats. The center console models, called Maritime Patriot 210 and built by Chislett’s Boating, are powered by a 115 hp outboard, and they should be on the water sometime this month. The Log reported the boats cost about $59,000 apiece.

SHUCKING GOOD TIME

At San Juan Island’s Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm, visitors can take part in a longstanding tradition that was recently renewed. BY DEANE HISLOP

ARRIVING AT LOW SLACK TIDE, under a clear cobalt sky, with a light breeze from the west made for a glorious afternoon. We arrived in Westcott Bay on the west side of San Juan Island and set Easy Goin’s hook in 16 feet of water over a sticky sand and shell

bottom. We took shelter for the day, to enjoy all that the bay had to offer.

APPROACH The approach to Westcott Bay is via Mosquito Pass, which connects Roche Harbor and Haro Strait. It’s narrow and meandering enough to make things interesting, and tidal currents must be considered most of the time. SEAMAGAZINE.COM DECEMBER 2019

The narrow navigation channel winds through what appears to be a wide, safe passage between Henry Island and San Juan Island. Passage is not difficult if you’re vigilant and follow the navigational aids that mark the curving channel. There is a 6 knot no-wake speed limit in the pass, and the navigation is pretty straightforward, but I’m always surprised how many boats cut a corner and tap the sand bottom. Midway through the pass, a channel leads east and into Westcott and Garrison bays.

SHELLFISH FARM Westcott is surrounded by homes, summer cottages, National Park forest lands and the family-operated Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. Arlene and I enjoy fresh oysters, so we take advantage of the shellfish farm’s fine selection of tasty Pacific

oysters, Manila clams and Mediterranean mussels, from May 1 through Labor Day. The farm is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the offseason the farm (westcott bayshellfish.com) is open on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. for takeaway and barbecued oysters. During our visit in July 2019, we heard the owners are considering expanding the offseason operations and suggested we monitor the farm’s website for any announcements. In the late 1970s, the bay’s tidelands were home to Westcott Bay Seafarms, a thriving shellfish company. Over the years the farm went into steady decline and was put up for sale as a home site. Henry Island residents Erik and Andrea Anderson bought the shellfish farm in 2013 with the vision of restoring it to its former glory. For the past six years they’ve worked hard to breathe new life into the farm by replanting the depleted shellfish crops, rebuilding and replacing farm infrastructure and making improvements to the property. They continue to grow the operation year after year.

GOTTA EAT Once settled we launched the dinghy, set two crab traps and headed to the shellfish farm for some barbecued oysters on the half shell. The farm is an easy dinghy ride from Garrison Bay and Roche Harbor. Boaters can tie up at the farm’s dinghy dock — they request bow tie only — go ashore, and purchase shellfish to go or shuck their oysters at the farm’s park-like area, which features picnic tables that overlook the farm and bay. The oysters are sold in various sizes: High Beach Sweets (petite and plump); Salty Franks (a classic oyster); Westcott Chubs (large, meaty and great for grilling); and Booters (a darn big oyster). Visitors can also purchase locally baked bread, cheese, and Westcott cider, beer or wine to accompany their oysters. The farm staff will teach visitors so inclined to learn how to shuck an oyster, so they can be slurped fresh. Less adventurous visitors can purchase oysters barbecued on the half-shell by the staff. events can take advantage of the Ned Shed, a newly constructed, rustic, barn-style building in an open field just steps from the water’s edge. THE CROP

How to Shuck Oysters SHUCKING OYSTERS IS SURPRISINGLY EASY once you get the hang of it. Two tools are all that’s needed: an oyster knife and something to protect your hand (kitchen towel or rubber gloves work best). Follow these steps: 1. Use a kitchen towel and hold the oyster cup side down with the hinge facing inward. Make sure the oyster is as level as possible to save the brine. Grip the oyster and wiggle the knife in its hinge, applying light pressure until the shell pops up. 2. Wipe off the knife and run it around the perimeter of the shell to sever the muscle that attaches the top of the shell to the oyster meat. Toss the top shell. 3. Slide the knife under the oyster meat and free it from the bottom shell. 4. Slurp from the shell or add mignonette sauce.

Make Some Sauce WE HAVE A COUPLE OF favorite mignonette sauce recipes. To make traditional mignonette sauce: 1. ¼ cup white wine vinegar 2. 1 tsp finely minced shallot 3. ¼ tsp freshly ground pepper 4. Stir together all ingredients, let sit

for 30 minutes To make hot mignonette sauce, simply add one teaspoon of sriracha sauce.

Each oyster starts at about the size of a sunflower seed and reaches maturity in two years. During their life cycle, the oysters are handled three times. The seed start is placed in a high-density 2,000-per-bag/rack system and planted in the farm’s tidelands where they feed on the algae that drifts in Westcott Bay. During the next two years, the owners decrease the density in each bag to give the oysters more room to grow. In the last six months before harvest, workers transfer the oysters into hanging bags at a lower density, where they can tumble with the tide and wind. Tumbling produces a deep-cup and plumper oyster. Westcott Bay oysters are renowned for their briny bite and slightly sweet aftertaste. In 2019 they harvested a little more than 1 million oysters and production is growing each year. In 2020 they will be introducing triploids, a sterile oyster that won’t get milky or soft during the spawning season of May through August. Doing so will dispel the adage “for the best taste, only eat oysters in months spelled with the letter r.”

MOLLUSKS TO GO We purchased a pound of mussels and took them back to Easy Goin’. We steamed them in white wine, garlic, butter, and a little grated carrot for color, and then enjoyed them as an appetizer during happy hour. They were delicious. Farm staff advises that shellfish purchased to go be placed in a dry bowl, covered with a damp towel and stored in the refrigerator or ice chest. Keep them cool and damp, and they will be good for three to four days. Do not store them submerged in water.

REAP THE REWARDS On the way back to Easy Goin’ we checked the crab traps and were rewarded with one legal Dungeness. It made two large crab cocktails for dinner. The next morning, we enjoyed the beauty of Westcott Bay and its mirror-like surface while sipping on our morning coffee, before we moved on to our next destination. We will return, however, for more of the mouth-watering mollusks raised with tender loving care.

If it wins, your name and chosen moniker will appear in the February 2020 issue of Sea, and you’ll win one pair of Costa sunglasses, valued at up to $279.

YOURS FREE! COSTA SUNGLASSES Whether you choose the Rafael style with a matte olive teak frame and green mirror lenses (pictured) or one of Costa’s many other styles (costadelmar.com), you’ll have your choice of frame width, frame type and lens color, to create a pair of sunglasses that’s all you.

HOW TO PLAY: The first person to submit the best boat name

will win one pair of Costa sunglasses, valued at up to $279. Submissions are due by December 15.
