NEW CUSTOM EVO R6. HERE COMES THE PARTY!

12/29/20 8:25 AM

A THIRD EVO R6 unit, fully personalised for transformation into a “party boat”, has been recently launched. The shipyard and the designer worked together to adapt the layout and décor of this flagship to meet the various requirements of the owner, who received his new custom Evo R6 a few days ago.

December 2020. Maximum comfort when underway combined with all the fun that the R series flagship model can offer. A new unit was recently launched of the Evo R6, the 18-metre yacht that epitomises the long-term vision of the Blu Emme Yachts yard. Compared to her two sisters, this custom EVO R6 features new layouts, both externally and internally, and alternative furnishing solutions developed together with the German owner, who envisaged a boat with a more aggressive look perfect for celebrations and parties. “Boats by Evo Yachts have always been admired for their

transformability,” said the Mercuri brothers, owners of the Blu Emme Yachts shipyard, “but in this case we’ve shown how a model that was already outstanding in terms of its flexibility of style and use can be revolutionised still further to meet all the owner’s requirements”. The exterior layout has been modified to create a bar with a linear and functional design behind the stern sunpad. The brushed stainless-steel structure and apparently suspended teak counter are seamlessly integrated with the unit containing a fridge, freezer and icemaker unit. The spacious sunpad sofa is a small masterpiece of design. Technological, transformable, and extendable, it encapsulates all the brand’s distinctive characteristics. Guests can use this feature to revolutionise the layout of the area in seconds: the backrest can be adjusted manually and transformed into seating for the bar, while the sunpad can be extended in width using an electric mechanism to form a C-shaped sofa overlooking the water.

Even the smallest details have been designed with the greatest care: the sofa seems to hang in the air thanks to its clever structure and, unlike the previous two units in which the sunpad has a 2.8-metre tender housed beneath it, here there’s a special hatch to gain access to the jet boards. The lateral Extension bulwarks, on the other hand, contain two seabobs, with a sliding system for ease of use. In the cockpit, the kitchen unit is in the same style as the bar and has been redesigned to accommodate a bigger grill. Also transformable are the new hanging pilot’s seat, the cockpit sofa with a backrest that can be used as an extra seat, and the cockpit table, which has an electric “up and down” mechanism and can be used either for lunch or drinks. The windscreen has two openings at the bottom to allow fresh air to circulate and make the cockpit even more comfortable. The forward sunpad and sofa have also been revolutionised in this new version of the Evo R6 by adding mobile backrests. Below deck, the interior design is in a Northern European minimalist style, with clean, simple and squared off lines combined with a palette of pale colours. The owner has chosen a layout with three cabins plus a spacious dinette that can be turned into a fourth cabin. Once again, the Yard and designer Valerio Rivellini have shown their ability to customise the layout of a 58-footer and translate the owner’s needs into a masterpiece of functionality and design. First presented with two cabins + crew and then revisited in a three-cabin version on the Open model, this third version of the Evo R6 offers four guest cabins and three bathrooms. The already exceptional technical performance characteristics remain the same, while consumption levels have been kept low. Propulsion is provided by a pair of 725 HP Volvo Penta IPS engines (IPS 950) that take the Evo R6 to a top speed of 35 knots and a cruising speed of around 28 knots.

THE CHOWDER BARGE FLOATING CAFÉ

AS I ENTER THE gravel access road, crossing the railroad tracks into a small parking area that overlooks a sea of paint peeling unkept boats, I’m having second thoughts not only about parking and leaving my car in this seedy, oops I must have made a wrong turn, let’s get the hell out of here location but also about walking the plank down to the questionable on multiple levels, concrete lopsided block that might actually be on the verge of submission all the while asking myself, why didn’t I just go to Shoreline Village for lunch? My questions are answered as I walk through the open door and step inside. I am mesmerized by the charm; floor to ceiling nautically themed art and tiki Knick knacks that have been accumulating over the years. I am a lover of the ocean and all things tiki and nautical so seeing all of this brings a smile to my masked face. As I give the place a good look, I am in awe of the beautiful ambered wooden tables and bar, the historical photographs and oh my goodness, the bright red fireplace with the human-like skeleton

heads inside! “This is Fantastic”, I say! Then I’m greeted by a wonderfully kind masked woman and immediately think to myself “Wow! I can’t believe I’ve never been here!” If you are a little more adventurous and looking for somewhere unique with a lot of character and history to grab a bite and a beer, look no further than The Chowder Barge. What started as a floating support vessel to hold movie equipment for the 1935 movie Mutiny on the Bounty filmed on Catalina Island is now a famously hidden gem anchored in Leeward Bay Marina, Wilmington CA. It is LA Harbor’s one and only Floating Restaurant.

The woman who greets me just happens to be the current owner Nyla Olsen. I introduce myself and she graciously sits and chats for a bit. We talk about the history of the barge and what a history it has! After the barges stint on Catalina Island, it was moved to Long Beach at the end of 7th street where it set in limbo for quite some time. Over the years it has been said that the barge served many purposes anything from a brothel to a floating houseboat. In the 1960’s the Panter family purchased the barge and it eventually made its way to its current location, Leeward Marina. At its lowest point in 2009, the clientele was shady,

der Barge favorite. The Famous Chowder Burger or as Nyla refers to it as “Shit on Shingles”. It is a cheeseburger swimming in Chowder, served up with an ice-cold Caption’s Schooner! How on earth did she come up with this burger chowder combination? She didn’t. Nyla admits her son had been out surfing, came in stoned and was craving a cheeseburger soaked in chowder. And wah-la, the Chowder Burger was born! And I must say, it lives up to all the hype!

it stunk of the holding tank and was scene of a fatal stabbing. It has changed ownership a few times since then. In 2010, Zack Connor and Susie Richman bought the restaurant and gave it the overhaul and internal facelift it deserved, including upgrades like Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs, Radio and a fireplace in the center of the dining area. At that time, Nyla had been working from home for 13 monotonous years. Needing a change, she found herself at cafe picking up a few waitressing shifts. Three years later Nyla purchased and became the proud new owner of The Chowder Barge. That was 8 years ago this coming March. As we continue our conversations, Nyla asked the chef to make me the local Chow-

The Chowder Barge isn’t just famous for its Chowder Burger it is also famous for being a go-to in the movie filming industry. The 1935 film Mutiny on the Bounty wasn’t the only cinematic spotlight the barge has been a part of. Since then, it has been the setting for countless series and movies including: Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, Wanted, Sunken City, Inherent Vice and most recent Homecoming, season one with Julia Roberts. We spoke of the many actors that had been on set there throughout the years. Nyla fondly that Joaquin

Phoenix from Inherent Vice was the most down to earth friendly person. He would drive himself to and from set, sometimes barefoot and hang out with the locals. The Chowder Barge, with its cinematic appeal and long history still flies under the radar but to those in-the-know, it is a magical place. Pre COVID, the restaurant would be crowded daily with “foodies” from long beach, bikers, families, long shoremen, politicians, surfers, locals and boaters. Covid-19 has plagued all of us, especially the food industry. Nyla commented and we can all relate, “the things that I took for granted and complained about, now seem like a dream that I long to have back!” Nyla was referring to the line of people that use to wrap around the side of the barge and not having enough tables to serve them, the overcrowded parking lots and boaters having to wait for a tie off. As we talked about the crazy world we are currently living in, Nyla offered me her favorite Helen Keller quote “Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.” As I left, wearing my new Chowder Barge baseball cap, I felt inspired and excited to share my experience with all of you. Hope to see you there! For now, only takeout is served, but soon we will all be back to a “new” normal and will once again be able boat right up to The Chowder Barge’s 40ft dock, tie off and go in for a great hearty breakfast, lunch or dinner. On the menu: steak and eggs, chowder, wings, burgers, fried fish and wash it down with a cold schooner, wine and champagne Price range: $6.00 - $27.00. For a full menu visit : https://www. chowderbarge.com

Nyla lives on her 43ft Grand Mariner Coastal Cruiser in the Leeward Bay Marina. In a past life Nyla was afraid of the ocean but has since overcome her fear of the water and grown to love the maritime lifestyle.

SEA TRAVELS of Denson Sales, a beloved friend to many and Sea reader is our first ever Sea Travels Spotlight! Born in 1940, a California native Jack has lived his life as we all should. Always looking for new adventures and ways to challenge himself. One such adventure was in 2006 when he decided to sail solo from Long Beach to Desolation Sound, Vancouver roundtrip. Sailing over a month to reach the Strait of Jaun de Fuca, anchoring in San Jaun Islands, Jack spent the next three months exploring both sides of Vancouver Island and the San Juan Islands. He hiked Chatter Box Falls, experienced Vancouver’s Honda Celerbaraton of Light and cycled around the Island on a tiny fold-up bike he had brought along for his journey. In 2007 after dipping his back wheel in at Anacortes Washington, Jack cycled from Anacortes, Washington to Bar Harbor Maine. Only this time dipping his front wheel into the water. Turning back to the open waters, In 2008 he sailed to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. In 2011 -2012, Jack cycled a complete circle around the United States with friend Bill Yocom. Then in 2015 Jack was diagnoised with throat cancer and has been battling with it on-and-off ever since. Not letting Cancer be his story he continued to do the things he loved. In 2017 he biked the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage and in 2018 made his last ride with friend Mike Connor from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. Jack commented that when he made the decision in 1988 to buy his Hans Christain 40 sailboat to sail and live aboard he knew he was buying a lifestyle. He hasn’t regretted this decision one single day. Since turning 65 years of age he’s had more fun than any other time in his life. In November 2020 Jack made the hard decision to stop the chemotherapy opting to spend more quality time with friends and family, to get a few day sails in here and there when able. ASK THE EXPERTS THE EXPERTS By GRID MICHAL GRINDING GRID’S GEARS

PUT PEN TO PAPER FOR YEARS I’VE BEEN flogging you to write: write your boat manufacturer to let him know how great his product is, or how it could be improved, in your (humble) opinion. Write your dealer: is he doing a good job? Has the sales-to-service experience been good, or a disaster? Skip the Facebook approach. Nothing beneficial on your purchase level gets accomplished that way. WRITE ON PAPER, DANG IT! The recipient can push DEL from his computer, but he will have a hard time ignoring a piece of tree in front of him. Websites have CONTACT US plastered on them. Some college grad spent a sunny afternoon figuring out where to put it, so make him happy and use it!

This year I took my own advice. Being sequestered for 8+ months can bring that itch on. Fortunately I temper it by picking steamed Chesapeake hardcrabs for the meat to make crabcakes for winter lunches, or a soufflé, or crab dip if and when neighbors come over. Lots of widows and

widowers here haven’t had a good crabcake since their partner died, and I enjoy swapping crabcakes for local lore. So I stopped picking one day and wrote. I wrote my state senators and representatives. According to the form-letter response to my letter saying GROW UP!!,

I discovered several had skipped high school English classes to watch the girls in PE. They were all too happy to tell me what they’d voted for…while the attendance record noted their absence those days. I wrote my big-time congressmen, same message. I had doubts I’d catch them between vacations and campaigning, but it was worth a try. I got the same “canned” responses, except now I’m on their mailing lists, and I get campaign recording calls. That was dumb. I gave up on congress (if I respected them I would have capitalized the word) and went for the banks’ jugular. CitiBank and Capital One send email after email

saying “LOOK HOW MUCH WE’RE DOING TO HELP YOU IN THE COVID19 CRISIS! CONTACT US!” I bit. I ended up “chatting” with a “virtual Emily.” Hi! I’m Emily! What can I help you with today? Hi, Emily. I’d like to know what your bank is doing with the 17.9% interest they charge me—that’s about 16.9% more than what the money costs them—to ease this pandemic. What are they doing with seventeen cents on every dollar? I think you’re good looking, too. HUH? One of those words tripped a seriously weird response! I reverted to paper. I’d noticed my FICO scores were dropping as quickly as I was concentrating on paying down debt from being hospitalized, unable to work. I wrote the banks. Their replies? “We don’t have anything to do with that” (form letter, of course). Strange---it’s on your webpage where I

bank on-line, has your name and mine on it…are you sure you don’t have the teensiest bit to do with it? Nope, not our deal. Try Equifax. Not gonna try Equifax. Don’t you use my FICO score to determine the usury rate you’ll charge me? According to my score of 703 (good), my quick payments of way more than the minimum are excellent. I’ve held the same credit cards for over half a century. What’s the problem? You have no home mortgage. I know: I paid it off in 2006. Isn’t that the American way? You have no car loans. Same answer. The car and truck are doing well. Why should I indebt myself? Your debt to available credit is too high. (Two Visas, one Mastercard and three gas cards—all reporting to Citibank—have offered me $50,000 credit, which I don’t use. I owe $7000 on a bank note and am paid up through 2021.) So what do I do to improve my credit

score and reduce the Visa rate? Or does that rate cover your bonuses after inefficiency? You’ll have to work with Equifax. At that point I remembered that saying about never wrestling with a o pig: you’ll never win and it enjoys wallowing in the mud. With that in mind, I went thirty miles south to friendly Langley Federal Credit Union and traded a 17.9% Visa for a 7% Visa. I also opened a checking account, and not knowing what effect the upcoming election would have on my meager investments, opened a savings account as well. Yesterday my new checks arrived. Except they’re not checks anymore. They came in what is called—honest!!—a “payment activation kit.” That’s 5 book for checks glued to the inside of a small cardboard binder. Hey—for 10.9% less interest and 95% less idiocy, they can call it whatever they want! I still say “WRITE!!”….but pick who you write to. Remember the pig.

HELMSMAN TRAWLERS 43E PILOTHOUSE Helmsman Trawlers has launched a new 43E Pilothouse Trawler model, with the first boat delivered to its Seattle-area owners in November.Â

12/29/20 1:30 PM

THE 43E IS A N evolutionary step forward from the original 43 Pilothouse, first introduced as a 2015 model, with several aesthetic and functional changes. Molds and tooling have been modified to alter the camber of the pilothouse roof and to retract the forward windshield position, additional Interior sound attenuation methods are employed, the volume of space in the guest stateroom and in the forward head have been increased, and exterior styling changes have been added. All these changes were in response to feedback and

experience with earlier 43s, and the result is a more refined and attractive boat. Helmsman Trawlers advertises their boats as Superbly Crafted and Surprisingly Affordable. With a base price of $585,000 USD the 43E Pilothouse is a lot of boat for the money. Two staterooms, two heads, flybridge, raised pilothouse — and built with exceptional craftsmanship and top-quality materials. The second 43E is complete and shipping to Seattle, and the third is already under construction for a Vancouver, B.C. couple.

A NEW HORIZON FD87 SKYLINE HAS LAUNCHED This latest FD87 is the first Horizon build for her experienced owners

2020) - Another Horizon FD Series yacht has launched and will soon be delivered to her American owners. Configured with an enclosed skylounge, the FD87 Skyline is the 20th FD Series yacht sold in less than three years. The new FD87 is the first Horizon build for the experienced owners, who were drawn to the Cor D. Rover-designed FD Series by the amount of volume this design affords in comparison to traditional motor yachts. The owners also appreciated the opportunity to customize their yacht

KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN (DECEMBER 8,

to suit their lifestyle and, while they were originally seeking a bigger yacht, they found the space offered within the FD87 Skyline met their requests with ease. The new FD87 Skyline features five spacious staterooms, including a full-beam on-deck master suite in which the owner specified a full-beam his-and-hers ensuite – the first of its kind aboard an FD87. Crew quarters for four are situated aft of the engine room, next to the fully equipped beach club with a Hi/Lo swim platform which the owners had upgraded to accommodate 2,500lbs.

On the main deck, a large aft deck lounging area leads into the main salon, which features full-height windows and emphasizes the yacht’s 23’ 3” beam. Here the owners specified light anegre as the main wood to maintain a light, open feel, while stitched leather paneling creates an atmosphere of elegance. A walnut sole in a beautiful herringbone pattern perfectly complements the hi-gloss walnut accents and Cambria Britannica gold quartz surfaces in the salon. The salon’s seating area comprises an L-shaped settee and

The al fresco space is protected by sliding glass enclosures to either side and is fitted with a U-shaped dinette, a large bar area with stools and a BBQ grill and chest freezer. The Hi/ Lo tables serving the dinette convert into a full dining table, and sunshades can extend protection to the aft open-air portion of the boat deck. On the foredeck, a large U-shaped settee faces two cocktail tables and the large sun pad for three. This area can also be shaded

with awnings and offers refrigeration and an icemaker for added convenience. Sporting a custom light grey hull requested by her owners, the latest FD87 Skyline is powered by twin CAT C32 diesels of 1,600hp each and fitted with Zero Speed stabilization. She will be delivered to her new owners this month.

IT ENVELOPED OUR yacht, closing off the beach and the reef from view, and it pounded the calm bay into colorless slate, pockmarked by pellets of water. Standing under the cockpit awning as water cascaded off in hissing sheets, the sheer impact of this tropical deluge made it seem hard to breathe, as though the air was being sucked away by the falling rain.

But it departed as quickly as it had come, leaving behind dozens of tall waterfalls on the sheer mountain sides, while the coco palms along the beach glistened with silver in the sunlight. In the distance, a double rainbow arched over the reef, and the trade winds soon filled in with their warm softness. I realized I’d been holding my breath..... But then, the sheer beauty of French Polynesia had taken my breath away from the moment that I arrived in Tahiti for a week-long charter starting on the island of Raiatea. Stepping out of the cool airplane, you are struck by the almost palpable scent of flowers and the heavy cloak of humidity makes shorts and a light shirt worth any strange looks when passing through the San Francisco airport. The Society Islands of French Polynesia are the stuff of dreams...picture postcard lagoons with white-fringed barrier reefs and monolithic mountains stabbing the sky. Tahiti, of course, is in the mind of every armchair traveler but Tahiti, and particularly Papeete, have grown grimy and jaded, while the outer islands remain fresh. The Iles Sous le Vent (Leeward Islands) where the charter activity takes place, still have pretty villages, good food, friendly people and perfect beaches. On a seven-day charter, you’ll have to make some tough decisions since there is too much to be seen in such a short session. It would take weeks to fully explore the cruising area of the Iles Sous le Vent, and most charterers will be happy to touch on the four most popular islands: Raiatea, Bora Bora, Tahaa, and Huahine. Bora Bora, of course, is a must, if only to sail through the pass like thousands of adventurers before you, and see the magnificent peaks wreathed in cloud. Huahine, particularly the southern end, is unspoiled, as are the southern and northern areas of Raiatea and Tahaa. The starting point for most charters is Raiatea, the “sacred one” to Polynesians, for we are not the only ones to set sail from this largest of the Leeward chain. All the great Polynesian sea voyages began from a marae, or temple, on this island, including the long migrations to Hawaii and New Zealand.

I REALIZED I’D BEEN HOLDING MY BREATH.....

COPRA AND VANILLA ARE THE PRIMARY CROPS,

AND YOU’LL SMELL THEIR DISTINCTIVE SCENTS ON THE DOCKS AT FARE AS THEY AWAIT SHIPMENT TO PAPEETE.

When much of the world was still gazing at the sea with fear, the ancient Polynesians made epic voyages from Baie de Opoa on Raiatea, including those led by King Turi, which established the Maori race in New Zealand. Sharing the same barrier reef with Tahaa, Raiatea isn’t on the usual tourist route, but it is very important for Tahitians since it was the heart of culture and religion for the huge area of Polynesian influence that stretched from Hawaii to New Zealand to Samoa and the Society Islands. Today, Uturoa is the main town as well as the center for the French and Tahitian administration for all the Leeward Islands. Inside the reef, the passages are wellmarked but you need to keep track of each marker so you don’t get out of sequence. There are a number of good anchorages on Raiatea, including Motu Taoru and Baie de Tepua. Baie de Faaroa is fjord-like with tall mountainsides and a long slash of protected harbor. It is also the outlet for the Aopomau River, which you can explore carefully with your tender, watching out for logs and shallows. After Raiatea, we headed for Huahine, ending up power-sailing as the breeze died during the crossing. Huahine, a single island divided by a narrow channel into Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti (Big and Little), is called the Garden Island, steadfastly cultivating crops rather than tourists, so it remains much as Captain Cook might have seen it and, like Tahaa and Raiatea, it remains off the tourist radar. Copra and vanilla are the primary crops, and you’ll smell their distinctive scents on the docks at Fare as they await shipment to Papeete. All so-called “French vanilla”, such as you find in your Haagen-Daz ice cream, comes from French Polynesia and 80% comes from the valleys of Huahine. Huahine also has wonderful watermelons, which you can buy at local shops. There are numerous marae, or religious sites, notably the one near Baie d’ Avea, and you can

arrange to visit the many black pearl farms to take home a memorable souvenir. The passes through the reef into the Huahine lagoon were well-marked, navigation between the islands mostly involved steering for the cloud-shrouded pinnacles on the horizon, and we were anchored off the village of Fare well before dinnertime. The anchorage was quiet, although there was the background booming of surf on the reef, and we had a casual dinner at Hotel Huahine after watching a spectacular South Seas sunset. The following day, after exploring Fare, we sailed inside the lagoon to Baie d’Avea at the south end of Huahine, a pretty anchorage with a hotel/restaurant ashore and a good sand bottom. The afternoon was spent snorkeling through the crystal clear water as brilliantly colored and completely fearless tropical fish peered into our masks. Cocktails, grilled beef and a lazy evening in the cockpit ended day two. From Huahine, we sailed to the island of Tahaa, which shares the same barrier reef with Raiatea. We anchored temporarily at Baie de Haamene to have lunch at the Hibiscus Hotel which, at the time of our visit, had an immense pet pig named Lala. Here you can book a four-wheeled island tour and visit the Turtle Foundation. Our meal was leisurely, with music from several Tahitians practicing on their guitars for the evening entertainment. Later, we headed north inside the reef and picked up moorings off one of the low motus on the tip of Tahaa. Nearly round, Tahaa serves as the gateway to Bora Bora for bareboaters. Small villages dot the island and, though Motu Tautau is private, it has a superb restaurant at one of the finest hotels in all of Polynesia, and your charter company may be able to make a dinner reservation for you. Passe Paipai is your departure point for Bora Bora, and it is the main shipping entry to Tahaa, so give way to ferries and inter-island freighters. Though Bora Bora is only 12nm northwest of Tahaa, it is 22nm

to Passe Teavanui. Bora Bora, with its two extinct volcanoes rising from a cobalt sea, is one of the world’s most recognizable landfalls, and was the inspiration for the mythical Bali Hai in the movie, South Pacific. It is also a paradise found in the dreams of every cruising sailor. Follow the channel carefully because the pass is deceptive but, once inside, you’ll find deepwater anchorage in Vaitape, which is a pleasant little village with the local gendarmerie. Most charterers head for Bora Bora Yacht Club, which has attracted sailors for years, serving as a meeting place and a message drop for cruisers in mid-Pacific. Anchorages, motus and reefs for snorkeling are everywhere around Bora Bora, and the background is uniformly spectacular. Motu Tape has the Lagoonarium where you can swim with fish, rays and even sharks without fear, but many motus are private, so respect the “Tabu” signs. On our last day, sailing inside the lagoon at the end of Raiatea, we were joined by a huge school of dolphin that practically begged us to play. We powered around in huge circles as the fish frolicked in our bow waves until they finally tired of us and sped away. Back at the charter base, we showered, dined on Chinese food on the lawn, and headed reluctantly for the airport and our homeward flight. Our week had slipped past in comfortable indulgence: we anchored for lunch, swam, explored the motus covered with coco palms, strolled the streets of lazy villages, and had not a care in the world. It’s no wonder that the French insist visitors have a return ticket from Tahiti. As singer Jimmy Buffet noted about his time in French Polynesia, “It’s one of the few times in my life that I thought about not coming back!” Chris Caswell was the Editor of Sea Magazine in the ‘70s and is publisher of the online bareboat charter magazine, Chartersavvy (www.chartersavvy.com) SEAMAGAZINE.COM  JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH 2021  27

IF YOU LOVE OUTDOOR adventure June Lake, California is the perfect year-round weekend getaway with ample hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, snowboarding and skiing. June Lake is a quaint resort community fondly known as Little Switzerland that nestles at the Great Basin and Range Province and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. With a population of 508, the main village sits between June Lake and Gull Lake. It has a post office, a general store, library, lodging, camping areas and a few restaurants. Quiet during the summer and fall, the town comes alive during the winter filling the resorts full of skiers and snowboarders. If you’re driving from the coastal area, make a pitstop in bishop to check out (1) Erik Schat’s Bakery. This German bakery is a must see and the food is delicious. Arriving in June Lake, we stayed with

We spent one day on Gull Lake fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding but if you prefer cruise the waters on a pontoon (available for rent at the (3) Gull Lake Marina) In the morning, I suggest you walk the lake a couple times so when you’re ready to hit the water you already know where the cool hangouts and the best fishing spots are. Bella and I walked it several times seeing rabbits and deer along the way. Side note, if you have a lazy day in mind, head over to June Lake. It has a nice sandy beach, also dog friendly and a stunning backdrop of the Sierras. After a long day of adventure and sun, Jason and I left the campground for a child free experience and an adult beverage. Since everything is within walking distance, we soon found our way to (5) June Lake Brewing. Offering a great selection of beer, friendly atmosphere and a Hawaiian food truck, we had arrived at our little piece of heaven. Other local favorites: (6) The Tiger Bar and Cafe (7) The Lift Coffee Shop. On our way back to the campsite, we stopped

into the June Lake General Store grabbing any groceries or camping supplies that we needed. Wrapping up the evening sitting by the campfire we head to the RV for a good night’s sleep. On the second day at the crack of dawn the guys mountain bike Yost Meadow in June Lake Loop then head over to Mammoth to tackle Mammoth Lakes Trial System. After lunch we all head out for an afternoon of hiking. I recommend hiking the 4.2-mile Rush Creek Trail up to Agnew Lake and the iconic (4) Horsetail Falls. It is the largest waterfall along the June Lake Loop and rushes 300 ft from Agnew Lake at the top, to the valley floor. The hike up is steep, has a series of switchbacks and crosses the Agnew Tram. As you hike the granite mountainside you have a breathtaking view of the falls ahead and the lakes below. The hike is dog and kid friendly but lacks shade so do not forget your sunscreen. GETTING THERE: A 368-mile drive from San Diego, 313-miles from San Francisco or a quick flight into the small Lee Vining airport. June Lake is in Mono County, CA along a 5-mile stretch of California State Route 158 better known as June Lake Loop Road. Closest City is Reno, NV. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH 2021  29

ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

JANUARY’S QUESTION: I’m still in the “I know I want a boat but I’m not sure how to go about it” phase of boat buying. What are some things I need to know at this stage?

For an answer to this month’s question, we consulted the National Marine Bankers Association’s publication “Understanding Boat Financing.” In the section titled Before You Shop for a Boat, we find the following. Do your financial homework and run a budget, check your credit history, and consider getting pre-qualified for a boat purchase. Before you visit the boat dealer or buy a boat: Determine how much you can afford in a monthly payment. Your credit score is more important than ever. Obtain a copy so that you have the chance to correct any misinformation that could impact your ability to obtain financing or a more favorable finance rate. Credit reports disclose your payment history for paid and current credit obligations, as well as any public records and consumer statements you may have added. Any negative reporting is problematic, so check closely for errors and work with the credit reporting agency to correct before going any further. If there are public records that have been resolved but appear to still be open issues on the report, have them updated. Most lenders expect credit scores above 700 and no public records. Some lenders will work with you, even with lower scores, if the problems are behind you and new credit has since been established. Boat loan interest rates, though driven by current economic markets, are generally based on your history in paying loans to financial institutions. This is measured by your credit score, found on your credit report. The higher your credit score, the more favorable your interest rate may be with a particular lender. If you are financing with a dealer or a service company, be sure your credit history and lender options are discussed before your loan application

is submitted. Compare current finance rates from various lending sources. Discuss loan qualifications so you know what is required to obtain financing. This will help you determine if there are any restrictions on getting the best rate available. Ask the dealer for any special manufacturer incentives or finance programs that may be available on new boats. Ask about fees. Some boat loans come with application fees, loan document preparation fees or early payoff fees. Know that some lenders charge them and others may not. Loan terms, your monthly payment and your cost of a boat loan are related. Typical boat loans have 10- to 15-year terms,

compared to car loans that are generally five to eight years, depending on the amount borrowed. Remember, it is always the wisest choice to finance your boat at the lowest term that allows the monthly payment to fit into your budget. Fixed-rate vs. variable-rate loans. Look for fixed-rate, simple interest loans. Variable-rate loans often offer a low “introductory” rate but have payment-adjustment features that could significantly raise your payment and interest expense. If you are considering a variable-rate loan, be sure there is enough difference in the interest rate, compared to a fixed rate, to make it worth the gamble. Check boat buying guides, websites, and other resources to determine what your needs are in a boat and where you can find a dealer with that product. Read boat reviews and pre-owned pricing guides to become better informed about values on both new and pre-owned boats. — MarineLenders.org
