KEEP THE CRUISE MOVING BY NOW, CRUISING SEASON is well underway

(though many Pacific Northwest boaters tell me it doesn’t really fire up till July 4), and plans have either worked flawlessly, been an utter disaster, faced numerous obstacles or are about to be tested. I’m pretty sure not a single boat owner will be surprised by the statement “Plans are going to change on the water.” Weather, mechanical issues, illness or an unexpected kinship with a particular place can derail the best plans. Zuzana Prochazka is a boat captain and charter sailing vacation facilitator (she has run boats in the South Pacific, the Caribbean and other locations), and she has fallen victim to and been vanquisher of many potentially cruise-ruining issues. She knows a thing or two about planning, planning for the plan to go to heck, re-planning on the fly and bringing things to a successful conclusion. Her story on page 34, “Cruise On,” highlights a dozen often-overlooked items that have the potential to sink a summer cruise. From the obvious — forgetting safety items and spares — to the maybe less obvious but no less important — making sure your towing membership is up to date (hers wasn’t) and having off-the-boat toys aboard — Prochazka does her best to make sure your 4

family cruise doesn’t end before it’s supposed to end. Such cruise-ending scenarios were kept at bay by Lawrence and Penny Talbot when they undertook a weeklong shakedown cruise of sorts earlier this year aboard their Nordhavn 50, Northern Ranger II. Their story is evidence that a systems- and equipment-testing cruise doesn’t have to be all business. Their son and his girlfriend joined them in La Paz for a Sea of Cortez trip that proved family, fishing and fun fit into any shakedown cruise. Check out their adventures on page 28, and then consider how well you checked on things this spring — and how much more fun you might be able to have next spring. For something new and different, flip to page 20 and check out the Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence. It’s smaller than 50 feet. It’s a center console. It’s outboard powered. And, yes, it’s an OA. The smallest and fastest Princess is also among the builder’s most technologically advanced. PRINCESS YACHTS IS CALLING its new R35 a “performance sports yacht,” and its 50-plus mph top speed, carbon fiber monocoque hull structure, all-aluminum Volvo V-8 gas engines and Active Foil System all point to the type of cutting-edge design that backs up that designation. But it also looks like a sleek dayboat, a superyacht tender and a couples’ weekender. Sleek, angled, swept back and highly collaborative, the Princess R35 is the smallest Princess model and, according to the company, the fastest boat it has ever built. With a hull design aided by Pininfarina, an Italian styling house that has designed world-renown cars, and a foiling system designed with Ben Ainslie Racing Technologies, the R35 is aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, bespoke and fast. Seating and lounging spots abound from the helm to the swim platform, and a cabin in the bow includes a dinette/berth, a galley and a head. At the helm, twin 17-inch glass bridge displays, engine controls, a Volvo Penta joystick and the Active Foil System control panel give the operator, who is situated at a triple-wide helm seat, full control. When people see the words “foil system” they think of those spidery appendages that lift a boat out of the water, but the foils

on the 35-foot, 9-inch Princess R35 AFS are more subtle, leaving the boat in the water. Integrated into the 10-foot, 8-inchwide hull, the foils work with the hull to reduce drag — up to 30 percent, according to Princess — by articulating independently of each other to adjust the heel angle and attitude of the boat. An onboard computer calculates the foils’ position up to 100 times per second for maximum efficiency. Dayboat. Day cruiser. Yacht tender. See-and-be-seen wakemaker. As a new boat, the Princess R35 is still open to categorization by buyers. The reaction from observers, no matter the category, is likely to be stares.

CROSS THE GULF OF TEHUANTEPEC Pay attention to the weather and other marine traffic, and getting across the once-feared T-peck doesn’t have to be nerve-wracking.

SCARY LEGENDS ABOUT THE Gulf of

Tehuantepec persist from the 1960s, before the world had GPS and accurate weather reporting. These days it’s much safer and easier for recreational boats to cross the gulf. Doing so requires a competent skipper in a reasonably well-equipped cruising boat. On a boat that has GPS, radar, a depthsounder and some method to monitor weather forecasts, crossing the gulf is a breeze. You just have to pay attention. Tehuantepec’s north shoreline curves 250 nautical miles from the resort port of Huatulco, on the east end, around to Puerto Chiapas on the southwest end. Sheltered marinas in both of these small ports are comfortable spots where dozens of recreational boat crews monitor the weather reports, waiting for a weather window that allows them to scoot across. Salina Cruz is a small commercial port

at the head of the gulf where recreational boaters avoid ships in the vessel traffic separation lanes. However, along most of this north shore boaters find calm seas in the lee of the land — even while a gale is blowing south across the isthmus. The narrow Isthmus of Tehuantepec is so low it allows certain winds in the southern Gulf of Mexico to funnel south and amplify in a Venturi effect, the source of the Tehuantepec gale. When a gale does blow, it can blast 100 miles offshore and fan out, so it’s impossible to outflank it by going farther south. Boats that get caught too far offshore when a gale begins find it difficult to bash back north into the calm lee of the land. So you have to pay attention.

WEATHER REPORTS

From Acapulco south, the Tehuantepec weather report is what all southbound boat-

ers are paying attention to. It’s the primary topic in the marinas, anchorages and on all the cruisers nets and internet groups. All the port captains broadcast it daily on local VHF radio and post the reports on their office door. (Look at the “T-peck WX” sidebar for other weather resources.) There’s a way to predict the start of a T-peck gale. In advance of a cold front moving southeast into the Gulf of Mexico,

T-peck WX Resources The closest and clearest SSB weather reports and predictions for the Gulf of Tehuantepec come from New Orleans, via the Coast Guard’s SSB station NMG (November Mike Golf) on Khz frequencies 4317.9, 8503.9, 12789.9, 17146.4. The most recent schedule is broadcast at 2025 Zulu, and as we go to press, the “Tehuantepec Forecasts” start at 0000Z, 0600Z, 1200Z and 1800Z. The five NMG WX-fax charts (TIF and GIF) of most importance are: • 00Z and 12Z, Sea State Analysis for the areas 0°N to 31°N and 35°W to 100°W. • 00Z and 12Z, 24-Hour Wind/wave Forecast for 0°N to 31°N and 35°W to 100°W. • 12Z, 36-Hr Wind/wave Forecast for 0°N to 31°N

When that high moves over Texas, any wind in the Gulf of Mexico clocks around to blow from the north, lines up with the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and funnels strongly south into the Pacific.

Top off in Huatulco and wait for your required no-gale weather window. Use the radar vigorously to coast about three miles off the scalloped western side of the gulf. As you approach Salina Cruz, track all ship traffic (AIS, radar, VHF) and avoid any ships that pop out of the lighted breakwaters. Download the Windy.com app, which delivers constantly updated global weather, then zero in on the Gulf of Tehuantepec and use the prediction mode at the bottom. Saildocs.com is a free service from Eric “Sarana.” He provides grib files (graphic weather presentations) via HF email, cellphone or satellite phone. To initiate contact, send a blank email to gribinfo@saildocs.com and in the subject line write Tehuantepec Forecast. WWV at 5, 10 and 15 megs broadcasts at 10 minutes after every hour and announces any WX warnings across all the Pacifi c, including one specifically for the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

the gulf from Huatulco to Puerto Chiapas. This “straight across” route is 220 miles — a 30-mile shortcut — and can bypass the shrimping boats that may be working close to shore. But it carries the risk of getting caught too far offshore if a T-peck gale arises. What if you foul a prop? Even during a T-peck gale, my husband and I have many times crossed the Gulf of Tehuantepec by running in a manner known as “one foot on the beach.” We run nonstop in about 30 feet of water for 25 hours straight, constantly hand steering. The benefit is that wind waves remain small this close to shore, no big seas can build up and we can keep moving. Doing it is draining on all crewmembers, who have to stand watch around the clock, but we were professional mariners deliv-

a half miles off the beach, staying in about 45 feet of water. At two places along this eastern shore, be prepared to jog three and a half miles off the beach due to seasonal shoals: Boca de San Francisco and Boca de Tonala. After clearing each shoal, jog back to about two and a half miles off the beach in about 45 feet of water, continuing to Puerto Chiapas. This slightly farther offshore method still requires careful navigation by radar — course needs to constantly be adjusted to accommodate the gently curving coastline — and by depthsounder to avoid drifting too far offshore. If a gale suddenly comes up, you’re still close enough to turn closer to shore or anchor in the lee of the beach until things calm down.

IS THE GENERATOR READY? Generators need tender loving care to be a reliable source of power. BY DEANE HISLOP MARINE GENERATORS DON’T HAVE it easy. They labor away in tight, stifling corners of the

engine room or lazarette and, all too often, are overlooked until something goes wrong. If it’s been a while since your generator was pressed into service, chances are it could use a bit of care. This is especially true if you are planning a summer cruise, which likely starts very soon. The time to ferret out potential problems isn’t at anchor in a secluded cove.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Before the trip, review your generator’s operating manual and perform all necessary services: oil and filter changes, zinc replacements, belt inspection and replacement, air filter cleaning or replacement, and leak checks. It’s important to begin the process well ahead of the departure date, because if you detect a problem, you will have time to schedule service or repairs. Service centers can be busy at the peak of boating season. I also suggest the following inspection and troubleshooting routines: • Ventilate the compartment, remove any debris such as oily rags or stray parts from the

area, and clean the generator’s exterior surfaces and the surrounding area. • Make sure the starting battery is fully charged and the terminals are clean. • Check and tighten all hose clamps and fittings, especially the exhaust connections. • Inspect all electrical connections, and tighten and clean them as needed. • Inspect all mounting hardware and other mechanical nut-and-bolt connections to ensure they are secure. • Check all fluid levels and add or replace as necessary. • Verify all through-hulls are operational. • Make sure the generator can be started from all onboard control stations. • Turn-on all electrical loads that would be used during generator operations, being sure not to overload the generator. Also, make sure the generator will handle the load it is rated for. As the ammeter climbs, make sure the frequency doesn’t drop much

A generator that can’t carry its rated amps is just as unhealthy as a main engine that won’t turn at full rpm, and whatever problem is causing the lost power will likely get worse. Run the generator under at least 80 percent load for 30 minutes and watch the temperature gauge to make sure the cooling system is up to the task. Note the generator’s current operational hours and add the number of hours you expect to log during the trip. Based on the total hours and the service intervals outlined in the operation manual, determine if any service will be required during the trip. If service is required, identify the necessary replacement parts and fluids, and purchase them ahead of time.

The next night I had about 300 questions and was up most of the night answering them, counting dollars in my mind. From then on I felt I had a solid base and got a system set up where I took major credit cards for the privilege. I went from 300 questions a night to zero. I learned folks don’t mind asking for free but hate to pay for answers — a hard lesson. One of the final emails as I was closing the site was from a guy named Mike, who had a Bertram like mine powered with new twin 250 hp Yamahas. His problem was the outboards were not achieving maximum rpm and, consequently, speed; the low 20s was all the boat could manage. I went out to my boat, took measurements as if I were going to install a stern bracket with the same engines, and emailed him with the dimensions and engine setup. Virtually moments later a hurricane hit

and we lost power for several weeks. As soon as power and phone service had been restored, the work phone rang. “Motor Doctor.” “Hey, this is Mike!” I assumed, wrongly, he was a grandpa who needed a boat running by the weekend. In my least pleasant voice I said, “What?” “I want to tell you that you walk on water,” Mike said. “I’m the one with the Bertram you gave the specs to.” My interest was piqued, my ego massaged. “How did it do?” “Fifty-two mph at 5500 rpm! I had the MerCruisers removed, installed a 300-gallon fuel tank, had the interior professionally decorated, installed black glass and had the hull Imroned. I want to take you fishing so you can see what you’ve created!” I told him I had personally unintentionally destroyed more expensive rods and reels by having to use them left-handed

than he’d believe, and generally was invited to go fishing only once. “Don’t worry about that,” Mike replied. “I’ll even send a plane for you. You have to see this thing run!” I thanked Mike for his generosity, but declined. Then I asked, “How do you get away with pouring pretty near a hundred grand into your boat reconstruction? I get a dollar, put it into my Bertram fund, my wife wants to know where the dollar came from and why it’s going to the Bertram.” “I don’t tell her anything,” Mike said. “I’m governor!” “Haha,” I laughed, “and I’m Queen Elizabeth!” We ended the call. That was Sunday night. Tuesday, FedEx delivered a packet that had a picture of a Yamaha-powered 25-foot Bertram on a trailer, ready to launch. The envelope’s sender was Mike Foster, governor of Louisiana. I have eaten crow many times, but never served in jambalaya.

Building a gasoline outboard-powered boat smaller than 50 feet might be a departure from Ocean Alexander’s current lineup, but the builder’s owners had a point: OA could do a better job producing a boat in this category. Such a departure from the norm led to an appropriate name for the new center console: Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence.

was entering this market, I figured its boat would be special. With a focus on larger motoryachts, OA’s line featured boats from 70 feet to 155 feet, so why would a motoryacht manufacturer start building a gas outboard center console? As is often the case, it came down to the marketplace: yacht buyers. Ocean Alexander motoryacht owners who own multiple boats expressed dissatisfaction with currently available center consoles. They wanted a center console with the high-quality fit and finish, amenities and customization they were accustomed

powerboating today is outboard power. More specifically, outboard-powered center consoles. In some parts of the country, center consoles are as ubiquitous as SUVs. Their open design provides an excellent platform for fishing, diving and day cruising, and many come complete with heads, cabins and other amenities. Outboards used to have a bad reputation, but new engine technology has brought outboard power forward. Today’s outboards are quiet, efficient, dependable and boast weight-to-horsepower ratios that help boats accelerate quickly and achieve high speeds. In a crowded center console field, it can be difficult to get excited about a new model, but when I heard Ocean Alexander

THE HOTTEST TREND IN

I first saw the 45 Divergence at its evening debut at the Miami International Boat Show. Two new models were lined up next to each other. Blue underwater lights (Lumishore) blazed, abovedecks accent lighting highlighted their silhouette and music played, showcasing the entertainment aspects of the vessels. Guests wandered through the boats and made it easy to see how the open layout and multiple gathering areas really work for entertaining. With a forward lounge, popup lighting, a central helm, a cabin with a head, and the cockpit opened wide with “balcony doors” extended, the boat can accommodate large numbers of people in a cocktail setting. The balcony doors are an unusual feature on the 45 Divergence. Sections of the hullside fold down to allow access directly through the gunwales to the cockpit. Like side doors on steroids, they are lowered by electric actuators to form wing-like platforms on either side of the vessel. At 6 feet, 11 inches by 2 feet, 7 inches each, they add 18 square feet on each side, stretch the beam to wider than 19 feet when open and create 168 square feet of cockpit area. Removable carbon-fiber stanchions with safety rails protect the outboard edges. When there is not enough room to fold down the balcony, a patented “door within a door” provides normal side door use. A retracting swim ladder in one of the balconies can be deployed when the door is

BUYERS GOT CHOICES

With more than 400 options available, a 45 Divergence can be set up to suit a specific owner’s needs and tastes. After the show I was able to connect with the gray-hulled fishing version for testing at Ocean Alexander’s Merritt Island, Fla., factory where these boats and the OA 70 are built. The folks at Ocean Alexander appropriately call the 45 Divergence a “day yacht,” since they use their experience with larger vessels to ensure these boats, despite their size, have yacht-quality construction, finish and features. The 45 Divergence’s Evan K. Marshall–designed cabin is extremely versatile thanks to 6 feet, 7 inches of headroom, a drop-table dinette, and a galley with a refrigerator, a microwave and a sink. The galley comes complete with cookware, cutting boards and dinner china for four people, including all plates, bowls, flatware, napkins and glasses. The inside dining/ sitting area converts to a comfortable sleeping area with a queen-size bed by folding down

the forward wall to reveal twin reading lights and nightstand shelves. The head has ample room and a convenient separate shower compartment finished with an elegant stone floor.

OUTDOOR LIVING

On deck is where this boat really shines. The cockpit area has the fold-down balconies, twin couch seating and a table that raises out of the sole with help from an actuator, which allows the area to be fully open for watersports, fishing or entertaining. With the table up, it is a great open-air dining area, a place to lounge under the SureShade automatic awning, or have movie night on the retractable cockpit TV. An outdoor galley features an electric Kenyon grill, a stainless sink, an induction cooktop, drawer refrigerators and an ice-maker. Forward, ahead of the helm, is a lounge seating area with drink holders, a Fusion Apollo series stereo, a sunshade on carbon-fiber poles and a windlass with a

washdown system. A hardtop covers the triple Lebroc bolstered helm seats, all of which feature arm- and footrests. The carbon fiber– accented dash has a full Garmin package with triple 8617 MFDs, a FLIR Thermal Night Vision M324S w/stabilized gyro, AIS, Sirius weather, an Octoplex NMEA 2000 network-controlled electrical system and all engine gauges. The tilt wheel, throttles and the Smartcraft joystick for the Mercury outboards with optional Skyhook are within easy reach of the helm seat. Visibility was good all around, and the helm air conditioning was refreshing as we eased our way through the cut to get to open water.

PERFORMANCE

Cruising at 1100 rpm for a no-wake speed of 5.4 knots gave us a 593-nautical-mile range based on 90 percent of the boat’s 607-gallon capacity. Once in the clear we pushed up to speed. The Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence is a large vessel packed

with features and amenities, including an 870-pound Seakeeper 6 gyro on our test boat, but the quad Mercury 350 Verados pushed it up on plane smoothly. At a fast cruising speed of 35.9 knots, 5500 rpm, the four Mercs burned a combined 87.7 gph (0.41 nmpg), which yields a range of 224 n.m. At wide-open throttle the 45 Divergence reached an exhilarating 41.2 knots (47.4 mph). During high-speed hardover turns at about 33 knots, speed dropped nearly 10 knots but the boat stayed on plane and felt secure. Back on the straightway, it quickly came back up to speed. This boat is easy to maneuver — joystick controls make docking simple — and fun to drive. The Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence is equally adept as a day yacht, a weekend cruiser, or a fishing or diving platform for family and friends. It’s also a solid open-air entertainer. Yacht-quality construction, features and amenities will impress boaters moving both up and down the boat size spectrum.

I won’t call them RIBs, because most of them are not really inflatable. Life Proof has taken the RIB concept in a different direction by collaring its boats with closed-cell foam that’s custom formed into a D shape that is then covered with heavy-duty polyester fabric that’s coated with urethane. The arrangement provides all the benefits of inflatable collars — buoyancy, stability, impact protection —without need of inflation. Some Life Proof models have air in the tubes, but they also contain the same EPE (expanded polyethylene) foam as the collared boats. FACTORY TOUR

After seeing the Life Proof 33 on a trailer at the 2019 Seattle Boat Show, I was ready to tour the factory and test one of the boats. I brought my 18-year-old son, Avery, with me; rather, he brought me, as he is a licensed pilot and offered to fly me from Everett to Bremerton, thereby avoiding the traffic and the ferries. We arrived at the Bremerton airport, which is nearly across the street from Inventech Marine Solutions where Life Proof Boats are built in 30,000 square feet of manufacturing space, and were met by company CEO Micah Bowers. THE SETUP

Like all Life Proof boats, our test boat, the Cabin 33 Limited, was semicustom. The hull, safety and performance features remain constant, but the accommodations, layout and features are set up to suit each individual owner’s needs. After a few days of organizing the boat, a Nordhavn 50 named Northern Ranger II — six months away from it, there’s always work to be done — it was time for our shakedown cruise. Our crewmembers, son Andrew and his girlfriend, Adrienne, flew in and made it from Cabo to La Paz on the Baja Ecco bus with no problems. They even had time for a “welcome to Mexico” margarita at one of the bars outside the airport.

S H A K E D O W N offered, with the proviso that it’s for mail only. No Facebook or movie streaming. (So much for posting a blog entry.) But that was nice of him. We all checked our mail for important news and that was it. Lunchtime rolled around and we deemed it a good idea to try out the cantina on the beach, although it was Sunday and I wasn’t sure the proprietor would be there. Unfortunately, when Lawrence went to start the big dinghy, after we dropped it into the water, the engine started pumping gas into the water. After much deliberation, and discovering the steering was frozen, we realized we wouldn’t be going on any adventures in the big dinghy this trip. Something else to fix when we got back to the dock. First trips are always a crapshoot, although now I am thinking maybe we need to conduct a systems check on everything before we go. Just a thought! A trip to the beach in the little dinghy — all four of us — didn’t seem possible, so I took off in the kayak. The closer I got, the more I realized fish tacos were not to be. The beach was deserted, probably not unusual for a Sunday. We opted for a walk through town to the tienda, where we picked up avocados, limes, beers and fresh goat cheese. Agua Verde is known for its goats, and we have read extensively about the cheese but never had a chance to buy any. The young woman at the store asked if I wanted queso de cabra. At least I think that’s what she said. She took me to the cooler outside and showed me two large blocks of fresh cheese. Heaven! Back at the boat I broke off a corner. Amazing stuff. Almost made up for not having fish tacos. We spent the afternoon in and on and around the water. I did some walking as I tried to get the best pictures of the bay from way up high. No drones for us. New rules require licenses for operators, and down in Mexico, only Mexicans can get a license, so we had already sent the drone home. We know the chances of getting caught droning are slim, but the price for getting busted makes taking that chance not so attractive. Besides, every time we flew our drone last year it got chased by seagulls and osprey.

e spent the next day getting ready, and the following day we cast off and headed out to Isla San Francisco, because we had all been there before and loved it. It’s one of those places that makes you think you are somewhere in paradise: long, white, sandy beaches and aquamarine water. The weather was great and, hallelujah, we caught two fish within 30 minutes of leaving the dock. One was a smaller male dorado that we decided to let go, and the other was a skipjack that we also released. Our early good luck made us excited about the prospect of catching something we could keep before we got to San Francisco, but it was not to be. We spent a lovely day hanging around in the bay, walking, snorkeling, fishing and eating. The newest addition to our crew, a thermometer shaped like a shark that we immediately christened Bruce, told us the water temperature was 25 degrees Celsius, or around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. That’ll do! I swam over to the reef and found lots of exotic fish, and Andrew and Adrienne took the little dinghy out with the electric Torqeedo motor to try to catch some dinner. They caught something with lots of teeth, but unfortunately they couldn’t bring it in. They lost the fish and the lure. And then the Torqeedo ran out of battery power, so they had to row the little rubber dink back against the wind. All that work for no fish.

The next morning [two days later, actually] dawned clear at Agua Verde. We woke early to watch the sunrise and make coffee, and then the kids organized breakfast. A benefit of having them on board is they cook. We brought Bruce out and discovered the water was 25/77 degrees. Perfect. We threw all the toys in the water — paddleboard and kayak and dinghy — with the hope that later we could go to the beach for lunch. I took off in the kayak and went to talk to our neighbor — most of the other boats had left. I was interested in a satellite dish we spotted set up on the beach, so I asked our neighbor about it, and it was his. He and his wife had spent a month in the same spot and set up the satellite for themselves … and anyone who asks politely. I didn’t ask but he

When they were close, Andrew waved at us and yelled “start the car, start the car,” so I knew something was up. They got to the boat and whatever was on the other end of the line was still fighting. After some hard work we could see what it was: a big beautiful rooster fish. Totally took us by surprise. Not something we would keep, but it was certainly a memorable catch. We did the trophy fish photo and then released it. After some gentle persuasion the fish came to its senses and hurried off, a little sore but otherwise fine. It was big enough that it actually towed the little dinghy around the bay.

… Monday morning we headed back south, with a plan to hit San Everisto and the beach tacos at Lupes, but the weather, as usual, had other ideas. Welcome to winter in the Sea of Cortez. After an hour or two of rocking and rolling, we decided to head into Tembabichi and give the wind a chance to die down. Andrew and Adrienne threw the little dinghy into the water and went to fish the rocks. Some fierce needlefish took their lure, after giving them a good fight, and they brought nothing back for dinner to show for three lures lost. I took the kayak to the beach to conduct some exploring. I was going to paddle all the way but the wind was strong, so I opted to land and walk to the pink palace, or Casa Grande. The building has an interesting history. Built in 1910 and, for most of that time, abandoned, someone inherited it in the 1970s, but the locals weren’t keen to have a hotel in their town. Mostly the place is where fishermen drive their pangas to the beach and head out for a day of fishing. Even they were hesitant to head into the north wind this day. One panga crew came to ask us if we knew what the wind was going to do. As usual my Spanish gets tongue-tied when I am called upon to use it. “Frio” had me running to the refrigerator and offering them ice. Doh! The kids wouldn’t let me forget it the rest of the trip. At least that is one word I will remember. Never let it be said I don’t learn from my mistakes.

… We continued the run down to San Everisto the next day and arrived in time for a late taco lunch at Lupes. I performed a reconnaissance run with the kayak, checking to make sure it was open before I called the mothership, so they could come over in the little dinghy. Lunch was superb. Cold beers, crispy fish and prawns, delicious tortillas. Finally! And Lupes offered us more and more. What a wonderful host. We arrived back at the boat in time to watch the other boaters around us all climb into their dinghies and head to Lupes for dinner. He was having a good day, I think.

Next day we retraced our track to Isla San Francisco. The wind was going to blow up, but we figured it was the best place to hunker down, and it was not so far that we couldn’t get back to La Paz by noon the next day. We did some serious fishing for a few hours — no luck — and headed into the bay, which looked mostly empty and very inviting. We deployed Bruce and found the water was, once again, around 75 degrees, so the kids and I headed to the north rocks for some snorkeling. It was amazing.

doubleheader: big skipjacks that made for some initial excitement and a nice dorado that was not quite big enough to keep. We kept one of the skipjacks, cleaned it and threw it in some soy sauce and pineapple, on the off chance that it might taste good later. So we ended on a high note! We made it back to the dock before noon and had lots of time to clear up and clean up, and then go to the hotel pool to spend the last afternoon with the kids, enjoying someone else’s margaritas and mojitos. After that, we changed, cleaned up and headed to Azul for our last dinner together, courtesy of Andrew and Adrienne. Before we left for dinner, we tried the marinated skipjack, paired with pineapple and wrapped in bacon. The marinade and the pineapple and the bacon were lovely. The fish … well … there’s a reason people throw them back. Everyone actually enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to catch and prepare another one. Next time, tuna or dorado or … anything else.

We saw lots of the same fish, but there were more guinea puffers and one big puffer in mid-change from black to yellow. Pretty cool. We also saw a number of moray eels — big, long, green ones. I swam down to shoot video, but I have to confess those toothy mouths were a bit frightening! I had never seen such big eels, though, so I was determined to get down there and have a look.

… Our last night out on the hook we ate another great meal, Lawrence finally made a pitcher of his famous margaritas and we all played a rousing game of cards. This trip we didn’t really have Wi-Fi and the satellite TV wasn’t working. We could use the DVD player but it only played on the TV in the bedroom, so one night we all sat on our bed to watch “Galaxy Quest” — it’s a tradition on our boat — but that was it. Mostly we read and played cards. Quite a different holiday for all of us. Refreshing, actually. Next morning we left before the sun rose, and we had our lines back in the water as soon as we cleared the bay. The wind had totally shifted to the south, which was odd, but it meant we only had a bit of a swell coming at us, and the sky was a clear blue. And we managed to go right through a school of fish, with a

A new coffee shop at the marina offers fancy coffee, western-style pastries and some very cool branded gear and, as we noticed during an unscheduled walkthrough, cinnamon buns. Adrienne was out the door as soon as she woke up the next morning — she and Andrew were going to be picked up at 0930 for their trip to the airport — and came back with a couple of the buns, which were huge. It felt just like the old days, when we used to hunt down the best cinnamon buns in the Pacific Northwest. Most anchorages in Desolation Sound and the Broughtons have someone who makes quality baked goods. Another of our traditions is cinny-bun runs first thing in the morning; we deposit them hot and yummy on our friends’ back deck, so when they get out of bed, breakfast is waiting for them. Up in Alaska I found the tradition of boating and cinnamon buns was also well represented. Nice to find we have a supply down here. And that was the week. We didn’t get as far north as we would have liked, but that is winter cruising on the Sea of Cortez. The northers will have their way with boaters and there’s nothing we can do about it, except plan for an alternate anchorage. For us, the water was warm, there were (a few) fish to catch and tacos to eat, and great memories to be made.

… Now it’s all about carrying on with chores. A freezer needs to be replaced; we ordered a new one today and actually managed to get the old one out from behind the settee in the pilothouse with no lasting damage to us or the boat! When we come back down in January, we will be out and about for several months and will need everything to work. Shower pumps need to be replaced; Honda outboards need to be fixed; water-makers need maintenance; and oil changes need to be done. And for sure there will be other things that need attending to. I would love to have turned around and gone back out to the islands right away, but in hindsight, it was a much better plan to just get ’er done. And be ready for our next adventure! Cruise On Don’t let a well-planned summer cruise get derailed by one of these 12 often-overlooked items. BY ZUZ A NA PROCH A ZK A

SHIP’S PAPERS & PERSONAL DOCS You need papers. If you’re taking a boat to Mexico or Canada, proper ship registration or U.S. Coast Guard vessel documents, import permits and/or permission from the owner if the boat isn’t in your name are vital. All persons aboard will need a passport, a tourist card or a visa, depending on their nationality. If you’ll be going ashore in the Channel Islands or at other preserves, you’ll need the requisite cruising permits. And even if you stay in the U.S., you need insurance documents, especially if there’s an accident. Papers that aren’t on board don’t count, so make sure all legal documents are up-to-date and with you.

SUMMER’S HERE, your boat’s out of mothballs and you’ve squirreled away enough vacation days for that extended cruise that becomes your happy place each year. Well beyond a weekend getaway, this is the one escape you, your kids and maybe your dog have been waiting for since last summer. The boat received a thorough spring commissioning, so it seems ready, but there’s a lot riding on this cruise, so don’t blow it by overlooking a few little things that can turn that happy place into a bummer.

CREW CHOICES Compatible crew makes for a happy cruise, so choose wisely. For a cruise that’s longer than a few days, or maybe it’s really a delivery of the boat to a new location, don’t just take the last guy standing on the dock, or that friend who never stops talking. If you’ve never cruised with kids or grandkids, test them out on a shorter run. Not everyone loves being aboard, and some passengers will be so sick that their misery could ruin everything. Last-minute crew additions can backfire, because boats are strange societal microcosms that require special people to get along. As you know, Aunt Betsy can be a handful after enough boxed wine.

SAFETY ITEMS If the boat has been laid up for a few months, it’s time to check some variable safety items. Sure, you have enough PFDs and your life raft is within spec but when was the last time you checked your flares for expiration dates? How about your fire extinguishers? Are they still full and up-to-date? Will you pass if you’re stopped for an inspection? If you haven’t seen the contents of your medical kit in 12 months, check for expired medications, leaking lotions and creams, and the general condition of the essentials. And don’t forget to add your personal meds, because they may have changed since last year.

SHORESIDE NECESSITIES

Speaking of going to shore, consider some of the little things that you may never use while aboard. A nice breeze may keep bugs away on the boat, but hiking through the bushes could bring swarms of mosquitos or other fun visitors, so remember bug spray. Have a dry bag for phones if you have to make beach landings in the dinghy. Pack hiking shoes that are never allowed on deck, bring the car rental reservations for extended exploration, grab any prepaid tickets to concerts or other entertainment, and remember the pre-arranged flights back for crewmembers who hop on oneway only. It’s easy to get wrapped up in all things nautical and forget about the things you’ll need when you actually arrive.



CRITICAL SPARES You or your mechanic may have gone through the boat’s critical systems, so the engines, genset and refrigeration should be good to go, but a boat is a changing environment, so bring some spares along for when things inevitably break. Do you have enough fuel filters if you get bad fuel? Do you have fuel additive for the stuff that’s been growing in the fuel tank and will be kicked up on a rough cruise? Do you have spare belts and maybe an extra prop or a spark plug for your outboard? If it’s been a while since you’ve seen the spares locker, get reacquainted with it.

PLAN B DESTINATION So you’ve researched your intended destination and everyone is excited about it. What happens if you can’t get there? B Weather may be a factor that could keep A you in protected waters or force you to head downwind, away from a storm. Did you forget to make dock reservations and get shut out? The busy summer season can cause crowded marinas and anchorages, and unless you want the kids giving you the evil eye on the dock, you’d better have an exciting Plan B. Don’t want to bash to weather for six hours? Boldly state that you know of other fishing grounds that are just as good, or maybe even better.

NAVIGATION & COMMUNICATIONS So you did the right thing and fired up the boat’s electronics periodically throughout the rainy season to dry them out, and you’re confident that the chartplotter, radar and fixed VHF radio are in good working order. Great. But did you download the latest charts, especially if you’re heading to new places? Are the transducer and/or speedo working after the last bottom cleaning? Is the handheld VHF charged, so the kids can use it when they take off in the dinghy? And speaking of being charged, how are the flashlight batteries? Things tend to go wrong in the dark and require a little light to be shed on the situation — even if it’s just to avoid burning the steak on the grill.

THE TENDER You may have gone over the big boat with a finetooth comb and everything is shipshape, but what about the tender? It is your taxi and your escape vehicle when it’s time to get some distance from Aunt Betsy. If you haven’t run it in a few months, the fuel may have gummed up the outboard, or a leak may have manifested itself. How will you explore, visit with friends on other boats, run the dog to the beach or get to the bar? The little boat is critical to shoreside operations, and it could even save the crew in case of a serious issue with the mother ship while underway.

TOYS & DISTRACTIONS Say you’ve made it to your intended destination but now everyone is stuck on the boat because it’s raining or the wind is blowing 30 knots? Close quarters make for tense relations, so lest you want a mutiny, have ready entertainment at hand. This could be as simple as board games, a few movies on DVD or a working satellite TV. It could also mean providing lots of opportunities to charge phones and tablets. Better have Wi-Fi access for teenagers, too, who wouldn’t recognize a book. Even if the weather is cooperating, bring lots of water toys — inflatable pool noodles, snorkeling equipment, SUPs and kayaks — to keep the energy flowing in a positive manner on or off the boat. 9

TOWING ASSISTANCE The only time I’ve ever needed a serious tow, I realized I was three days out of my service date with on-water towing assistance. That’s a bad realization. Check to make sure your TowBoatUS, SeaTow or local towing contracts are updated and paid and that you’re covered for the cruising grounds you expect to be visiting and not just your regular home coverage area. In Mexico, you may not have much professional assistance available, so think through how to get somewhere if your engine seizes or you drop a prop.

10 Checklists aren’t just for the compulsive among us. They’re for organized, safety-minded mariners intent on having a good cruise. In fact, you should make several checklists prior to a big outing, so you can rest easy if and when things do change. Maintenance tasks are just one list. Make other lists of spares, toys, medications, and especially meal planning and general provisioning. Because you don’t want to be caught short on snacks or run out of that box wine, now do you?

Let someone know where you’re going, how long you expect to be away (or out of radio contact), and when you’ll be back. That’s a given for almost any outing. However, if you’re distance cruising, whether dock-to-dock or down the remote coast of the Baja peninsula, file a detailed float plan. This can be done formally through an on-water towing service or the Coast Guard or loosely with a trusted friend who knows how to reach you or the proper authorities in case you don’t show up on schedule. BOATS HAVE BEEN ON THE move in Blaine Harbor for centuries. Canoes carved from huge western red-cedar logs carried the Coast Salish people along these shores to their fishing grounds and villages. With few roads, settlers depended on boats to move goods and people. In the late 19th century, a fleet of steamboats known as the Mosquito Fleet delivered mail and supplies to Blaine. At the beginning of the 20th century, Blaine was the third-busiest seaport in Washington state, as steamships and schooners crowded the harbor, waiting to whisk goods to market. The lumber and shingle mills that would help rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake lined Blaine’s shore, and the first salmon cannery in Whatcom County

as are the Canadian Gulf Islands and the waterfront community of White Rock, B.C. Operated by Port of Bellingham, Blaine Harbor Marina includes a two-story boating center that houses the harbor master’s office, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities and a 65-person conference room with a kitchen. Its fairways are wide and easy to maneuver through. Visiting boaters have access to a wide concrete float that has more than 800 feet of side-tie moorage, 30- and 50-amp power hookups, and was across the mouth of the harbor at Semiahmoo Spit. Blaine Harbor is strategically located in the northern portion of Puget Sound on a peninsula, near Washington’s San Juan Islands and British Columbia’s Gulf Islands. Established in the mid-19th century as a seaport for the fishing and logging industries, Blaine is a seaside village steep in history. Its main street is still lined with turn-of-the-century lampposts adorned with colorful hanging baskets, and its marina, which is state of the art, offers plenty of amenities for visiting boaters from either side of the border.

MARINA Blaine Harbor Marina is the northern most harbor on the West Coast of the U.S. and is tucked inside the entrance to Drayton Harbor, a shallow body of water in the lower curved shoreline of Semiahmoo Bay. The U.S.–Canadian border slices through the middle of Semiahmoo Bay, which takes its name from the Native American term for half-moon. The safe approach to Drayton Harbor is to stay offshore, pass between the entrance markers, keep an eye on the depthsounder, and follow the channel to the marina entrance, which is to port. The marina is home to 600 pleasureboats and a small fleet of commercial fishing boats that swells to more than 100 boats during the summer. From the marina, the Peace Arch border crossing at the 49th parallel is within sight,

The harbormaster (VHF Channel 16, switch to Channel 68) offers unoccupied resident moorage slips up to 120 feet for guest moorage, when they’re available. The marina offers Wi-Fi, pumpout stations and a summer courtesy shuttle. There is no fuel available in the marina, but it is available across the entrance to Drayton Harbor at Semiahmoo Marina fuel dock.

TO THE PARK Across the road from the marina is Blaine Marina Park, a birdwatcher’s haven, with ample opportunities to sight a significant number of avian species in the vast tidelands. The park includes a sculpture of orcas, a children’s playground, an amphitheater, grassy areas, picnic sites, a view of the international border crossing and access to the beach. A gravel path winds its way through the park’s waterside greenway to the Blaine Public Pier at the end of the peninsula; it’s a popular spot for anglers to cast their lines and patiently wait for a bite. During crab season, folks line up to toss their traps over the side, in hopes of Dungeness for dinner. A short walk from the marina is the 67-foot-high Peace Arch, which straddles a tiny portion of the 3,000-mile-long U.S.–Canadian boundary. The arch was

compared to other border towns, Peace Portal Drive boasts a veteran’s memorial park, gift and specialty shops, boutiques, bookstores, espresso bars, pubs and restaurants.

VARIETY OF TASTES Café Rawganique serves organic and plant-based juices, smoothies, coffee, pastries, hot meals and more. Its adjacent lifestyle store offers sweatshop-free sustainable clothing and home products made in the U.S., Canada and Europe. For breakfast, the Peace Arch City Café and Bar, and Tony’s Just A Bite have can’t-miss options. Another nice discovery is Edaleen Dairy, which serves scream-worthy ice cream and features a bakery, cafés and a selection of restaurants. The Vault Wine Bar offers a vast wine selection and Northwest fusion cuisine, but if a mouthwatering steak sounds better, Jack Niemann’s Black Forest Steak House is the place to go. For something that satisfies an international craving without the requisite border crossing, several restaurants are available. A Washington state park is on the U.S. side of the arch, and a B.C. provincial park is on the Canadian side. The park’s gardens are bejeweled in color by more than 200 perennials and 55,000 annual plants, ponds, picnic areas, a sculpture exhibit and expansive views of Semiahmoo Bay, Point Roberts and the Canadian Gulf Islands. It’s one of a few landmarks in the world that is listed on the Register of Historic Places in two countries.

The downtown district is only three blocks from the marina, and in those three blocks visitors pass the abandoned Blaine railroad station, an artifact of the 1920s and ’30s that provides a sense of what life was like back then. COMMUNITY EVENTS Blaine’s 5,000 residents know how to celebrate life and the town’s history in a small-town way by hosting several lively events. They begin in March with Wings Over Water Pacific NW Birding Festival. June includes the annual 5K Run to the Border Race and the opening of the Saturday Blaine Gardner’s Market. July ushers in the annual seven-day/six-night Blaine Harbor Music Festival and performances from world-class musicians. Also in July is the Drayton Harbor Maritime Festival and an old-fashioned July 4 celebration, with a parade, street vendors, food, a car show, live entertainment and extravagant firework show over Semiahmoo Bay. And finally, the free Peace Arch Park International Concert Series takes place every Sunday in August.

AFTER A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP, we begin the day with breakfast on the patio of Nancy’s Bakery 1 . While devouring apple-cinnamon buns and French toast, we watch a fisherman moor his trawler and hose down the deck. Beside him, a family loads supplies onto their sailboat for a trip to Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, a popular nearby boating destination. Beyond the marina, we can see the Vancouver Island mountain ranges receding into the distance. The village of Lund, located at the northern end of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, is easily walkable, featuring a waterfront boardwalk that winds from the historic Lund Hotel 2 to the Boardwalk Restaurant. In the center of the village, the Mile “0” marker 3 celebrates Lund’s unique position atop Highway 101. What’s so great about that? The Pan American highway system begins 9,446 miles south, in Chile, and ends at Lund. Or vice versa. That’s more than one-third of PNW-6

For centuries, the Tla’amin First Nation people have enjoyed the abundance that the land and sea provided, and they call the area Kla ah men. In 1889 the Thulin brothers from Sweden settled here and named the community Lund. Today, a general store, restaurants, a marina, a hotel and marine services combine to make a vibrant community. Boaters need not travel all the way to Hawaii for a tropical island getaway. SAN DIEGO’S SHELTER ISLAND IS technically not an island at all; a narrow strip of land connects Shelter Island to the mainland. During World War II, the land was formed with dredged material when the channel was deepened to meet U.S. Navy requirements. A single street, Shelter Island Drive, runs the length of Shelter Island. Today the “island” is a haven for boat enthusiasts, fishermen, and recreational watersports fans alike. It’s also a hotspot for superyachts, as three of the island’s main marinas can accommodate vessels 190 feet and larger. WHERE TO MOOR Kona Kai Marina 1 , located on Shelter Island, offers temporary slips at a rate of $3 per foot per day, with a three-day minimum stay. Shelter Cove Marina, at the northeast tip of the island, and Shelter Island Marina, at about the midpoint, both also offer short-term

moorage at $2 to $2.50 per foot per day. When boat owners need work done, they will find many yacht brokerages and boat repair shops along the artery that connects the mainland to Shelter Island. ISLAND TIME Humphreys Half Moon Inn 2 is a beautiful sprawling campus of suites where visitors might find a parrot squawking over a koi pond during an evening stroll of the lush grounds. An elegant seafood restaurant, a concert venue, a luxurious pool and a spa are all available to guests. One Shelter Island activity boaters shouldn’t miss at some point is catching an outdoor concert at Humphreys Concerts by the bay. The 1,400-seat outdoor theater presents a variety of major acts from April through October. Shelter Island is a great place to perch for the July 4 Big Bay Boom fireworks display, for folks who want to leave their boat in the slip during the hectic evening, as there are plenty of open areas to spread a blanket and take in the bay views. Every September, YachtFest spotlights superyachts and is held at Shelter Island Marina. There is also a mock gun battle between two replica tall ships at the event, 1

Its menu offerings include specialty hot dogs (chicken

Shelter Island Pier 11 extends 200 feet from the shore and spans 500 feet. And since it is a public pier, visitors don’t need a fishing license to fish there.

Director of Communications at Marine Group Boat Works LEAH YAM STARTED HER CAREER in boating as an account manager at a PR firm that represented Marine Group Boat Works, a full-service yacht repair facility in Chula Vista, Calif. Her work got noticed by the folks at MGBW, so they hired her, and she’s been there for more than a decade. Yam’s work for MGBW in recent years as director of communications got her noticed by the folks at Boating Industry, a leading marine-industry trade magazine, which honored her by naming her to its 2019 40 Under 40 list for young professionals. SEA: What does making Boating Industry’s list mean to you? LY: I went into PR to hide behind the scenes of the media — not get in front of it! But I must admit, now that I’ve been exposed, it’s a rewarding feeling receiving the positive recognition from people in the industry, friends and family, all agreeing with the judges of the list. What is a typical day at the boatyard for you like? There is no typical day, and it’s probably driven by the variety of boats we service. One day I’m working with our estimating and contracts team to transition owners and yacht crew to the yard period, and the next day I’m writing a 100-page proposal to build a patrol

What position were you hired for, and how did you end up where you are at today? I was fresh out of college and became the account manager at a PR firm that represented Marine Group Boat Works when it rebranded and spent $6.5 million renovating its facilities. We received a ton of publicity for having the largest Travelift in the nation at the time. Not long after I booked them on The History Channel show “Modern Marvels” did Marine Group Boat Works realize hiring me in-house was the way to go. I started as the communications director managing all of our marketing, communications and concierge services, and now I oversee sales and estimating and serve as a member of our executive leadership team. What Marine Group project that you’ve worked on is your favorite? There have been several, but the ones that stick out are the unassuming ones. I can remember when we hauled MY Minnow, a 110-foot aluminum expedition yacht, thinking it’d just be a quick bottom paint job with some routine mechanical work. Two years and $2 million later, we cut the boat in half, added 20 feet to the hull and gave it a brand new luxury paint job. We worked collaboratively with the owner’s interior designer and European see Leah Yam on page 6

They had this idea to tow a large yacht in a Travelift. In two months, we pulled it off with the live PR stunt going viral world-wide. Why has San Diego become a superyacht destination? If you build it, they really do come. When Marine Group Boat Works launched our new superyacht refit capabilities, we had owners like Larry Ellison and Rupert Murdoch signing up who never before cruised their superyachts to San Diego. But of course it’s complemented by our location. San Diego rivals international destinations like Sydney, London and New York and is home to historic landmarks, chef-owned restaurants, outdoor events, craft breweries, music festivals, etc. — all the things that appeal to the tastes of superyacht owners and crew. MICHAEL SACHS, FOUNDER of

Westrec Financial, died; he was 77. He died April 11 at his home. Sachs founded Westrec Financial in 1987 and was also the brain trust behind the formation, development and capitalization of Westrec Marinas. Prior to Westrec, Sachs practiced law and was a partner at Agnew, Miller and Carlson; he also practiced law at Kindel and Anderson. He started his own firm, Sachs and Phelps, in 1982 and served as the executive vice president and general counsel of Public Storage Inc. between 1982 and 1990.

Washington state. What are my tax responsibilities in Washington?

Non-resident boaters purchasing a boat in Washington will not be required to pay sales or use tax, providing the boat is required to be licensed and registered in another state and is not used on Washington for more than 45 days following a purchase. Non-resident boaters who bring a vessel to Washington for temporary use are not subject to use tax for the first 60 days, if the vessel is properly registered in another state. The 60 days may be extended to six months if the non-resident applies for a temporary Washington State Vessel ID document. Sales or use tax previously paid on the same vessel in another state will be deducted from the tax collected in Washington, providing the registrant can show proof of payment. Vessels purchased for use as a charter boat are not initially subject to sales or use tax; but tax will be collected each time the vessel is chartered.
