Secrets on the Cruise Ship

If you’re lucky enough to be cruising on the sea, then you’re lucky enough. For those who have never boarded a cruise, you may be imagining laying out by the pool and enjoying all-inclusive food and drink packages. But there are secrets on a cruise ship, some of which might take you by surprise.

1. The walls are magnetic—what? Most cruise ships are made of metal walls. This feature was implemented in case of a fire. The metal walls would prevent the fire from spreading. But that also means if you bring a strong magnet hook, you can hang things from your walls, a tip that will come in handy when you see how small your room is. For example, you can use magnetic hooks to hang clothes, bags, and towels to keep your room tidier.

2. This next secret might make you scratch your head. Cruise ships are legally required to have a morgue onboard. In the case that someone dies from natural causes, a mishap happens by chance, or even the pos-

sibility that someone has an incident such as an allergic reaction, cruises are required to not only have medical facilities, but those medical facilities must be capable of dealing with a limited number (usually three to four) of passenger deaths. The morgue is located on the ship’s lowest deck. According to thepointguys.com, this is the area where the crew often refers to it as the “I-95.” The long passway lets you get from one side of the ship to the other. The morgue must be kept away from all areas where food is stored.

3. Rumor has hit that cabin designers know how limited space is in the cabins and that they have created hacks for extra storage. Frequently you will find additional storage behind a mirror, under the bed, or in a decorative ottoman. Sometimes you can find USB charging ports behind your cruise cabin television. If you’ve searched your cabin for extra space but have yet to find it, asking a steward for a tour of your room doesn’t hurt.

4. Cruise ships will host Alcoholics Anonymous meetings while at sea. Oftentimes you will find “Friend of

Bill W” meetings on the ship’s schedule. The cruise will host meetings and refer to them as the “Bill W” as a reference to William Wilson, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. The meetings are a support system for each other as alcohol is a visible and present temptation on a cruise.

5. On a cruise, a port day is when your cruise is docked or tenders to a port of call or private island. This is the time when you are free to do what you want. You can exit the ship and explore, but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, consider taking advantage of the ship’s low capacity and discounted deals during this time. The cruise’s spa often offers discounts to generate business, or you can enjoy the pools, attractions, and amenities with less foot traffic.

6. My last tip is for those staying in a windowless “Inside” cabin; these rooms are dark. But there is a trick.

Most cruise ship televisions have a feature called the Bridge Camera Station. This station is a live webcam. If you set it to this channel at night, you’ll see the nighttime sky, and as morning comes, the light on your TV will grow brighter. It’s a strange way of creating a window in your windowless cabin.

Cruise ships are large passenger ships used mainly for vacationing. Unlike ocean liners, which are used for transport, cruise ships make round-trip voyages to various ports of call, where passengers can make shore excursions.

Chain of Command— The Bosun and Their Role

The term Bosun, less commonly written as bos’n, bo’s’n, or bo’sun, defines a merchant ship’s petty officer in charge of hull maintenance and related work. It also represents a naval warrant for the hull and all related equipment. The word Bosun comes from the word Boatswain, the most senior rate of the deck department. The word’s first known use was before the 12th century, spelled bootswein, from boot (boat) plus swein (boy, servant) — more at the swain.

Today, the word is most known to describe people working in the profession— but you may have learned it from the hit television show Below Deck.

Before becoming the Bosun, a trainee OS (ordinary seaman) will work in this role to gain experience onboard. After successfully being promoted from the OS role, they are awarded the title of AB (able-bodied seaman). Once having mastered the role of AB, the person can then be promoted to Bosun.

A bosun’s duties are to be thorough with seamanship practices. Therefore they must possess a wealth of maritime knowledge, such as knots, hitches, bends, whipping, and anchoring the vessel. The Bosun must also delegate duties to the deckhands as their role is the senior deckhand. From there, the Bosun reports to the First Mate, the Captain, or the Second or Third Officer, depending on the size of the yacht.

According to Dockwalk. com, while no document lists the mandatory qualification requirements for a bosun, most yachts will only consider a deckhand for a senior deck position with an STCW or ENG1 medical certificate and PB2 or IYT Tender Driver License. In addition, a bosun is typically required to hold an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or, at minimum, an IYT Master of Yachts < 200GT (or higher).

Part of the role of the Bosun is to ensure that the workers below them are performing at an effective and efficient rate, meeting quotas without directly being involved in the work and all other aspects that affect the junior deckhands.

Bosun salary generally ranges between $3.5-$5 per month, but some factors can make that amount vary. For example, a higher-paid Bosun might possess a watersport certification such as diving or kitesurfing credentials and engineering experience or qualifications.

Before ships were equipped with technologies like GPS equipment and computers, the Bosun was required to have technical knowledge about a ship’s geographic positioning and many other essential details. However, after the progression of technological equipment hit the markets, the need for Bosuns to have technical know-how stopped being a mandatory requirement.

Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup is Another Success After Being Delayed

AVALON — After being delayed due to the severe weather that California was experiencing, the 41st Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup was a significant success for the city. This was the first year Catalina Dive Supply hosted the event after taking over the duties for the University of Southern California’s Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies.

“Even though we had to reschedule the event we were thrilled with the participation, both from divers and sponsors,” said Christy Lins, owner of Catalina Divers Supply, in a press release from April 18. “We’re very grateful for everyone who stepped up and helped us make this cleanup such a success.”

This year’s event saw almost 500 registered divers and 70 non-diving participants, and more than 60 volunteers. In addition, nearly one ton of trash was collected and removed from the harbor. The event also raised more than $10,000, which was awarded to the Avalon Rotary Club Foundation and the USC Hyperbaric Chamber.

After the dive cleanup had finished, an award ceremony took place where winners were awarded to most interest-

ing items collected from the seafloor. This year the top prizes were:

• A toy train.

• A fire extinguisher.

• A pirate hat.

• A cell phone.

• A clutch purse with a $10 bill inside.

Additionally, Christy Lin was honored with the Golden Flipper Award for her efforts in organizing the event, and Mark Guccione who received the Jon Hardy Award for his efforts in promoting the Casino Point Underwater Park. Raffle prizes were also awarded.

The event for 2024 is scheduled for Feb. 24, with the Catalina Dive Supply expected to host the event again.

“We’re exploring several new developments for next year,” said Lins in the press release. “We’ve learned a lot and are excited by how many people, businesses and organizations are eager to come together to preserve and protect our ocean world.”

LOS ANGELES — On April 12, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that a Los Angeles Superior Court judged against a group of people and businesses importing and selling live, non-native abalone in Los Angeles—

a violation of California law.

The discovery that non-native abalone was being unlawfully sold was first discovered in 2019 by the CDFW; the abalones sold were still alive at the West Olympic Blvd Galleria market.

The discovery was made when undercover wildlife officers purchased a live, non-native abalone from the store. Then the CDFW’s Wildlife Forensic Laboratory conducted a DNA test on the purchased specimen and confirmed it was a disk abalone— a species not native to California. Additionally, it was determined that the abalone was being illegally imported through the Los Angeles International Airport from South Korea.

It was estimated that the store unlawfully purchased at least 797 abalones and sold at least 719.

The court’s verdict prohibits Galleria Market, LP, HK Galleria Holdings, Inc., H.K. Partners, LLC, and Young Jun Kim from further importation or sale of the live, non-native abalone unless permitted by it California law. The court ordered the defendant to make a public announcement regarding the illegality of their sales, to pay $174,242 in civil penalties and $4,757.03 to the CDFW to reimburse investigation costs. In addition, the defendant must pay $20,000 to the California Wildlife Officer Foundation’s Turn in Poachers and Polluters (CalTIP).

Can you explain the property tax allocation after purchasing a used boat?

QUESTION:

I bought a used sailing yacht through a California broker earlier this year. We used the California Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA) form purchase contract supplied by the broker, which called for the parties to check a box to pro-rate property taxes for the year. I have a few questions about the procedure for the tax allocation, starting with whether a buyer legally required to participate in the pro-ration? I don’t live in California and I don’t understand why I was asked to pay a share of the seller’s Orange County property taxes. Second, I have heard varying reports about the proper tax year to use for the allocation of tax. And finally, the contract did not spell out the exact amount that I would have to pay. Can you clear this up?

ANSWER: The allocation of personal property tax between the buyer and seller of a yacht is a common provision of most purchase contracts in California. However, like most other contractual terms, the allocation is not required by law and it may be negotiated between the parties.

Under the circumstances described in the reader’s question, the buyer may want to opt out of the allocation provision since he is not a resident of the county that assessed the tax. On the other hand, the seller may require the allocation since he will not be the owner of the boat for a part of the year for which the tax has been assessed. A well drafted purchase contract such as the form produced by the CYBA will include a provision which allows the buyer to “opt out” of the allocation, but this will ultimately depend on the negotiations between the parties.

When the parties agree to allocate the property tax assessment between them, the most logical basis for the allocation is to divide the calendar year based upon the closing date of the

transaction. Under this method, the percentage of the calendar year that the boat was owned by each party is calculated, and that percentage is applied to the tax assessment for that year. The buyer will then be required to pay that amount to the seller at the closing of the transaction. Note that the seller will be the “taxpayer” for that calendar year regardless of the closing date of the sale, so the buyer’s portion is paid to the seller as a reimbursement, rather than directly to the County.

As evidenced by our reader’s question, there is some confusion over the proper tax year to use for the allocation of property tax. A boat owner’s annual tax bill indicates the fiscal year covered by the bill, which typically spans from July 1st of the current year through June 30th of the following year. However, the legal obligation to pay the tax to the County is assigned to the person who owned the boat on the “assessment date,” which in California is always January 1st . Since the person who owns the boat on January 1st is responsible to the County for the entire year’s property tax payment, the allocation of the tax between buyer and seller should be based upon a calendar year pro-ration.

If the buyer and seller agree to prorate property taxes for the year of the purchase, the closing statement prepared by the broker will spell out the exact amount of the property tax allocation between the parties, but this may not actually be listed in the purchase contract since the CYBA form does not include a place for that amount. This may cause some confusion, but the exact amount may not be available at the time the contract is signed because the parties won’t know the exact

closing date until after the completion of the buyer’s survey and satisfaction of other contingencies. The brokers should nonetheless be able to provide an estimate so there are no surprises at closing.

The broker will be prepared for this since, if the purchase is made through a California broker, he or she will be required under California law to specify the applicable tax year in the purchase agreement, as well as the actual pro-rated amounts payable by the seller and buyer.

The question of whether to pro-rate property tax on a boat purchase, and the allocation of that amount between the parties, both fall squarely within the duties of a yacht broker in California. The Broker and Salesperson license examinations conducted by the California Division of Boating and Waterways actually include property tax questions to ensure that the licensees know their way around this issue. Buyers and sellers seeking additional information about their obligations under a purchase agreement should nonetheless talk to a maritime attorney with experience in yacht purchase and sale transactions.

Lower Sea of Cortez Options for Summering Over

Last issue we transited the tricky Gulf of Tehuantepec to reach safe summer harbors south of the hurricane-genesis zone.

This time, let’s explore some options for where to summering over in the lower Sea of Cortez. As prudent mariners, we incorporate local weather wisdom into our boating itineraries. And, hey, hurricane season is approaching. Check that your boat’s insurance covers it down here throughout hurricane season.

WHEN IS HURRICANE SEASON?

Good question. Before climate change became so obvious, we thought hurricane season always began on June 1 and ended on November 1. But we’re not in Kansas anymore. Warming oceans worldwide have boosted the strengths of many cyclonic storms. Tropical Depressions now sometimes bloom into Hurricanes earlier than June 1, or last beyond November 1.

The chilling effect of repeated La Nina cold-water up-wellings pushing north from near the Equator may have been shielding Mexico’s Pacific coast from early hurricanes, as boaters in previous years saw a couple Tropical Depressions (1006 mb) form off southern Mexico prior to May 15 – but then they peter out.

However, on April 13, Emily Becker of NOAA’s El Nino Tracking Office predict-

ed for 2023: “There’s a 62% chance that El Nino (warm up-wellings) will develop during the May – June period, and more than 80% chance of El Nino by fall.”

The prudent mariner will make slip reservations early, because many of the so called “hurricane hole” marinas are already getting booked full. Ask for their discounted multi-month rate.

WHERE TO HIDE OUT?

From south to north, here are some suggestions for where to berth your boat over summer in the lower Sea of Cortez and down to Barra. (We’ll investigate upper Sea of Cortez options next time.)

Barra de Navidad, Jalisco: Historically, boats berthed within the enclosed yacht basin of Marina Puerto de la Navidad (200 slips) have suffered no hurricane damage despite that coast taking direct hits from a couple hurricanes. Why? That basin was excavated into the backside of massive Punta Graham which shields it from storm wind and seas. However flash-flood runoff scoured the adjacent lagoons, so don’t try to hide there.

Puerto Vallarta, Nayarit-Jalisco: Counter-clockwise spinning hurricanes get blocked by the Sierra de Cuale above Banderas Bay’s south coast. Try for a slip in any of the three yacht harbors along Banderas Bay’s north shore. They are at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle (Marina Riviera

Nayarit, 300 slips), inside Nuevo Vallarta Inlet (Paradise Village Marina’s 200 s lips, and Marina Nuevo Vallarta’s 90 slips), or inside Puerto Vallarta’s municipal harbor Marina Vallarta (350 slips).

Mazatlan, Sinaloa: The narrow entrance to the Marina District gets closed out by south wind and swells long before a hurricane arrives, so get inside here early. Marina Mazatlan (260 slips) and Marina Fonatur Mazatlan (21 slips) are farthest inside, so theoretically that matters. Although Marina El Cid (103 slips) is next to the entrance channel, in a pinch they sometimes have a couple side ties tucked inside a residential waterway farther inland.

L a Paz, BCS: Reserve a secure slip in the La Paz area at either Marina CostaBaja (250 slips), Marina Palmira (180 slips), Marina de La Paz (120 slips), or Marina Fonatur La Paz (40 slips) off the south end of the La Paz Channel. Otherwise, look for beefy breakwater enclosures and recently reinforced dock structures.

Topolobampo, Sinaloa: Located 7.5 miles east of open water, Marina Palmira Topolobampo (20 slips) is shielded f rom storm seas by three angled channels. Safe temporary berthing may also be found next door at Marina Club (30 slips) if members haul out their own boats before an approaching storm.

Puerto Escondido, BCS: Historically, the enclosed Bahia Puerto Escondido (Hidden Port) has served as a hurricane refuge. Marina Puerto Escondido has about 100 slips in the main marina, and a dozen more in the back basin and island channel. Besides its land perimeter, P uerto Escondido is shielded by 3,000’ peaks of Sierra de la Giganta to the east.

ALTERNATIVES?

If you expect to keep your boat in Mexico over the summer, discuss your plan with your insurance provider. Their coverage determination might depend on whether or not you or some responsible boater is to be living onboard (and presumably caretaking the vessel) throughout hurricane season. Your land-lubber nephew flying down with his pals for an occasional long weekend? No, that probably doesn’t count.

How about a mooring? Ask your insurance provider, because most won’t in-

sure boats summering over on a mooring, “especially if the boat’s to be left unattended on a mooring,” said Craig Chamberlain of Novamar Insurance, a U.S. –Mexican company that covers hundreds of West Coast boats in Mexican waters.

Who’s responsible? Because summers are so dang hot down here, hundreds of avid boaters plan to fly home for a ll or part of hurricane season, leaving their vessels safely berthed in a marina. It’s not considered wimping out, merely a normal phase of Mexico cruising.

Most good Mexican marinas (all of those listed above) offer a menu of caretaking services. Those may range from visually inspecting fenders and dock lines for chafe, to a monthly topsides wash and wax, to a vetted skipper coming aboard daily to check the bilges and, if you wish, to run certain of the boat’s equipment every day or so. You determine what your boat needs and how often.

I suggest you and the marina walk through your boat and write down exactly what caretaking services the marina will provide in your absence, and how much each service will cost. Be sure they have all your contacts for future questions or in case of emergency.

D ry-storage yard? Some harbors have dry-storage or haul-out yards that might be a less expensive option for summering over during hurricane season. Look for their wind shelter, haul-out method, maximum width and tonnage of lift or trailer, type of jack stands, durability of yard surface, distance from sea conditions. Discuss this alternative with your insurance provider to decide if that yard is safe enough.

Here’s my yard list: In Banderas Bay, haul-out and dry-storage yards are La Cruz Boat Yard and Opequimar Marine Center. In Los Cabos there’s Cabo Yacht Center and Marine Group Boat Works. In Topolobampo, Marina Palmira hauls and stores boats on hydraulic trailers. In Mazatlan, see the SENI boat yard and Marina Fonatur Mazatlan. In La Paz, they are Bercovich Boat Works, Atalanta Marine, Abaroa’s Boat Yards, La Marina Palmar, and Astillero Fonatur La Paz. In Puerto Escondido, the dry-storage yard is part of Marina Puerto Escondido.

Why Yacht Transport Benefits the Buyer, Builder, and Broker

There is a lot of anticipation after buying a boat, and whether you’re the buyer, the broker, or the builder, having your yacht delivered is the exciting final step in the process.

A fter the purchase of your new yacht is complete, the next step is delivery. Of course, you can hitch it up to your trailer and tow it home yourself if you have the means— but there are many variables to consider. Do you have a vehicle that can pull the boat? Have you ever driven a trailer? Does your schedule allow you enough time to do so? If those variables factor into your equation, you can consider yacht transportation as an option. Yacht transportation is the shipping of a yacht to a destination instead of sailing or motoring it yourself and is a great option that will expand the yacht’s lifespan.

Sevenstar Yacht Transport was founded in 1985 to serve the North European market. After being acquired by the Dutch worldwide shipping company, the Spiethoff Group, in 2000, Sevenstar expanded its network and now has offices in the United States, the U.K., Australia, and Turkey, with agents in Monaco, Germany, Russia, and New Zealand.

S evenstar’s yacht transport process begins with the client requesting a quote and receiving an answer within 24-48

hours. From there, if an agreement has been reached on the sailing dates, destination, price, and insurance coverage options, the operation side takes over.

Safety and communication are a perk of the service. Throughout the yacht’s voyage, it is kept locked up for the entire duration, it is inspected daily, and the client is regularly sent updates on the transport’s progress. In addition, if you have a sailing yacht that cannot stand on its own keep, Sevenstar will supply specifically designed cradles to accommodate your vessel. All sailing crafts are transported without removing standing rigging or spars. When the yacht reaches the end of its journey, the keys are only handed over to the owner or the nominated representative.

“ The client always has one single point of contact throughout the process, keeping them updated about ETAs, documentation prep, [and] Yacht prep weeks pr ior to loading,” said Kris Caren, who serves Sevenstar’s U.S. East and West Coast operations. “Local port and customs agents on both ends are looped in before loading. Then on the day of loading, the client or their skipper or both will bring the yacht alongside the ship. We lift from the water using [diver-placed] slings around the hull. We then stow the yacht on deck with our Lloyds Certified Cradles ([Sevenstar is the] only company with such quality equipment), all supervised by our [in-house] team of loadmasters, which boasts a damage rate of less [than] .05%. We arrange launch boats on both [ends] to bring the yacht’s crew back to shore at loading and back to their yacht at discharge. ETA communications are done every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in order to keep everyone informed throughout the process. All customs documents are exchanged with local agents v ia email using scanned digital copies.

[A] 25% deposit is due at invoicing and the rest at loading paid by wire transfer.”

One significant advantage of a 48V DC system is the broad range of compatible electrical equipment available for yacht re-powering. Retrofitting or replacing house loads with a 48V DC system is generally a straightforward task for marine electrical technicians, and often even for boat owners, as it avoids the complexities associated with high-voltage systems. Inboard motors for propulsion, like the Newport-25, operate on 48V DC power, eliminating the need for any high-voltage systems on board. Other essential components such as power inverters, battery chargers, and solar chargers are also more readily available and affordable for 48V DC systems compared to higher voltage alternatives.

Simplified and Cost-Effective Power Conversion:

Converting power from the main battery to support various onboard loads is a crucial aspect of re-powering a yacht with an electric propulsion system. With a 48V DC system, it is simpler and more cost-effective to convert power to the commonly used 12V DC for house loads, such as pumps, lights, cockpit instruments, and radios. This conversion can be easily achieved using a DC-DC converter that steps down the voltage from 48V to 12V DC. With the exception of the windlass and bow thrusters, high-power 12V DC systems can be easily accommodated with this setup.

In Summary:

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced on April 19 that the 2023 recreational Pacific halibut fishery will open May 1 and remain open seven days per week until Nov. 15 or until the quota is reached, whichever comes first. The 2023 Pacific halibut quota for the California subarea is 39,540 pounds –the same as the 2022 allotment.

On the other hand, many people really wanted to go sailing but didn’t know any boat owners. Thus, the idea behind the club is to suit the desires of both the skippers and the crew. It brings them together to participate in outstanding sailing days with knowledgeable, enthusiastic and involved people.

In 2008 in keeping with changing demographics and to attract a more extensive base, the term “Singles” was dropped from the club’s name and replaced with “Sunday,” reflecting our ongoing practice of meeting and sailing on Sundays.

The Sunday Sailing Club in Marina del Rey called the Marina Sunday Sail Club (MSSC) welcomes everyone from beginners to experienced crew and skippers to test and learn new skills out on the water.

The course begins at 10 a.m. with a light brunch followed by afternoon sailing in Santa Monica Bay and a dock party with wine and cheese (BYOB). The entire experience costs $15, and participants will learn, practice, or sharpen their sailing skills.

The club meets every 2nd and 4th Sunday at Burton Chase Park Clubhouse from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. For those interested in becoming a member, the cost is $100 per year. That fee will include 22 brunches, 22 sails, and 22 dock parties, including annual holiday parties and 4-8 sails

A Dictionary for Those Learning to Sail

Suppose you want to learn to sail or are just beginning; knowing that sailors speak another language when on the water is essential. Here is a complete list of terms and definitions in alphabetical order for sailors to learn and better communicate while sailing.

Aft: at, near, or toward the stern of a ship. “Aft,” in nautical terminology, is an adjective or adverb meaning towards the stern of the vessel, aircraft, or spacecraft when the frame of reference is within the ship, headed at the fore.

Astern: behind or toward the rear of a ship.

Bow: The bow is the forward part of the hull of a ship or boat, the point that is usually most forward when the vessel is underway.

Keel: The keel is the bottom-most longitudinal structural element on a vessel. On some sailboats, it may also have a hydrodynamic and counterbalancing purpose.

Leeward: situated on or toward the side sheltered from the wind; downwind; the side sheltered or away from the wind.

Mainsail: the principal sail of a ship, especially the lowest sail on the mainmast in a square-rigged vessel; the sail set on the after side of the mainmast in a foreand-aft-rigged vessel.

Port: Port refers to the left side of the boat when the boat is looking forward.

Rudder: A rudder is a primary control surface to steer a ship, boat, or submarine— the propeller.

Starboard: Starboard refers to the right side of the boat when the boat is facing forward.

Stern: The stern is the back or aft-most part of a ship or boat, technically defined as the area built over the sternpost, extending upwards from the counter rail to the taffrail.

Tacking: change course by turning a boat’s head into and through the wind.

Windward: Different from leeward, windward is when the boat is facing the wind or situated on the side facing the wind.

Crew members are not expected to be [at the level of] Joshua Slocums but must progress to the point where they can assist the skipper. Safety has always been of primary concern, as has the member’s desire to enhance their sailing skills.

The first meeting was held at Don the Beachcomber’s in Marina del Rey, and 150 people attended. The interest has never been wanted in the ensuing years. However, with no specific meeting place and no present Sunday sails, it was necessary to call all the members and let them know when and where to meet.

The three founders did all the telephoning. Did you ever try to call over 150 singles in California before the days of answering machines? It was a significant problem, as was finding a place to gather before sailing to make boat assignments. But, difficult as it was, we managed to survive until Burton Chace Park was built, and the club was allowed to meet there bi-monthly.

The concept of an easygoing yet serious sailing club persists today. Members are active in various offices and activities, including four parties and four trips to Catalina each year. In addition, there is a once-a-month cleaning of a member’s boat and a monthly safety class. This, in addition to two Sunday sails each month, gives a well-rounded sports activity that is one of the most desirable aspects of life in Southern California.

LONG BEACH — The Long Beach Yacht Club announced

to all ASPBYC Member Clubs that they are accepting challenges for the “WALT ELLIOTT HARBOR CHALLENGE,” which will take place on May 7. The Challenge race will be sailed in monohull yachts propelled by sails. Each yacht must be skippered by a member of the club that it represents, and only a club member may helm the yacht during the races for the Cup. Any member club of the ASPBYC may challenge LBYC for the

Challenge Trophy. Such challenge shall be in writing, signed by a flag officer of the challenging club, state the name of the challenging club, and submitted to the LBYC Race Office at raceoffice@ lbyc.org no later than February 28, 2023. The challenge shall state the class or handicap rule under which each yacht must be rated, and if a handicap rule, a rating with which each challenging and defending yacht shall have a rating that is not more than (5 percent) higher or lower. We would welcome a one-design challenge in the Long Beach Sailing Foundation-owned Catalina 37s. The Racing Rules of Sailing will govern the race. CDFW Provides $36 Million for Project to Save Salmon and Other California Fish

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced on April 13 that they would be supporting nearly $36 million in projects to benefit salmon and their habitats and to continue supporting climate resiliency, wildlife corridors (a strip of natural habitat connecting populations of wildlife that are otherwise separated by cultivated land), and wetland restoration.

According to the CDFW, many key actions for future Californians will be required in or to save salmon and rebuild their populations. Acts will include:

• Investing in and restoring salmon strongholds as climate refugia.

• Increasing partnerships.

• Working with Tribes.

• Incorporating more large-scale restoration faster.

• Modernizing old infrastructures.

• Creating fish passage around migration barriers.

Awards will be distributed as the following:

Salmon Strongholds: Klamath, Scott, and Shasta Rivers.

The CDFW will award $20 million in Drought Emergency Salmon Protection Grants to 10 projects that will provide support by collaborating with Tribes a nd landowners in the Shasta and Scott rivers and their watersheds. Support will be provided by habitat improvement, removing barriers that black fish passages, and groundwater recharge projects. N ine million from the funds will go to Tribes in the Klamath River mainstream for post-McKinney Fire debris flow damage remediation, slope and sediment stabilization, and restoration for salmonids.

Climate Resiliency and Nature-Based Solutions.

The CDFW will award $6.9 million to nine projects to expand support to nature-based solutions, climate resiliency, w ildlife corridors, and restoration of wetlands. Projects funded with these grants w ill go toward planning and implementation of wetlands and mountain meadows, including expanding habitat for Lahontan cutthroat trout habitat on the Upper Truckee River, addressing urgent degrading water and habitat conditions due to c limate change impacts in Shasta and Sonoma counties, and creating habitat connectivity through wildlife corridors funding for species such as Clear Lake

hitch and newts, among other projects.

While awaiting the commencement of these projects, t he CDFW will continue to accept applications for new projects and make awards on an ongoing basis as long as they emphasize a strategic approach to rebuilding salmon and other species through the removal of barriers to migration, improving water management and quality, restoring core salmon strongholds, and taking substantial steps to modernize older infrastructures for salmon-friendly results.

The CDFW announced in late 2022 that $200 million in new funding was available for restoration, including $100 million in emergency drought funding for protecting salmon against drought and climate change.

F unding under the Addressing Climate Impacts and Nature-Based Solutions initiatives provides:

• Grant funding for projects addressing water and habitat impacted by climate.

• Restoring wetlands and mountain meadows.

• Creating wildlife corridors.

On March 7, 2023, CDFW announced its first round of awards totaling $22.5 million for 19 projects from this funding.

To achieve that goal of California accomplishing more restoration faster, the CDFW has developed a single set of General Grant Program Guidelines with an overview of eligible project types, priorities, and i nformation on the application process, available at www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Watersheds/Restoration-Grants/ Concept-Application.

Sport Fishing Magazine Shares Ten Weird Ways to Catch Fish

If you always thought the ways to catch a fish were limited to rods and nets, sportfishingmag.com has something to tell you, and they’re saying you can leave the rod and reel at home.

Unsurprisingly, in a world where technology blossoms daily, drones can now be used for fishing— hunting for kelp patties just got easier.

A ccording to S port Fishing , landbased shark and tuna anglers have begun using drones to chauffeur their bait past the breakers where the bigger fish commonly are found— a technique that is easier as the advancement in technology lowers the price of drones.

The article by Joe Albanese reads, «These anglers rig their drones with remote triggers, allowing them to place baits exactly where they want them. This also permits them to use whatever rod and reel combo is needed to beat big game, including the largest Penn Internationals or similar.»

N ext, S port Fishing a nd Albanese talk about electrofishing. Electrofishing is a fishing technique using direct electricity flowing between a submerged cathode and an anode. This affects the movements of nearby fish, so t hey swim toward the anode, where they can be caught or stunned. According to Albanese, this method is generally used for sampling. The stunned fish are placed in holding tanks, and then bio -

The cutest way the article suggests to fish without a reel and rod is by using an otter to fish. Using animals to catch fish has been around for a while. Birds and mammals have both been used. Cultures, including the Chinese, Japanese, Greeks, English, and French, use cormorants— an aquatic bird— to catch fish, whereas, in Brazil, fishermen coordinate with dolphins to catch fish.

In Albanese’s article, “10 Weird Ways

to Catch Fish,” he says, “Now typically only practiced in Bangladesh, anglers i n Scandinavia, Germany, Poland, England, Scotland, China, and even North a nd South America used otters to catch fish. An illustration on a map from 1539 of what was then known as Scandinavia depicts an otter fetching a fish for its handler, who is ready to fillet and cook it.”

I n a 2014 report from Phys.org, Shashudhar Biswas, a fisherman from Bangladesh, says that the otters do not actually catch the fish. Instead, similar to how the Brazilian fisherman works with the dolphins, the otters will chase the fish toward the net that is placed next to the boat.

BLUEFIN TUNA AND YELLOWTAIL ARE BITING OFFSHORE!

• After a winter and an early spring that saw lots of rain, wind and high seas, Southern California anglers have finally seen a stretch of decent weather conditions. The good news is that the stretch of good weather has been accompanied by good fishing for a mix of bluefin tuna and kelp-paddy yellowtail. Sportboats have regularly been returning with near limit to limit catches of bluefin that sometimes have a some 10-to-15-pound yellowtail in the mix. The past week has seen some private boaters out on the tuna grounds catching some bluefin tuna and yellowtail as well.
