Two extremely rare orange lobsters were rescued from Red Lobster in two locations within a month of each other. On July 13, a team at a Red Lobster in Hollywood, Fla., was stopped in their tracks when they discovered a rare orange lobster in their daily shipment. The team called Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach, where the brightly colored crustacean was taken and lovingly named Cheddar after the restaurant chain’s well-known biscuits. Less than one month later, on Aug. 9, Cheddar was joined in the news by Biscuit when a second rare lobster was found in Meridian, Miss., and sent to a new home at the Ripley’s Aquarium of the TheSmokies.discovery of the pumpkin-colored crawlies is considered a 1-in-30 million chance.Lobsters normally have a dark exterior in hues of brown and grey with some red undertones, which made Cheddar and Biscuit stand out amongst the group. Usually, lobsters colored this brightly are more likely to be spotted by predators and rarely survive in the wild. According to the team at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, this bright coloration can be caused by pigments they ingest in theirWhilediet. the lobsters are rare, the team thinks they may not be as rare as once thought. The lobsters may be getting their color makeover from their localized diet where they are harvested.RedLobster told USA TODAY Biscuit is from the same fishing area as Cheddar, supporting the theory that this uptick in unusual coloration has to do with what the lobsters are Aeating.third lobster was found in a New York grocery store which has made its home in the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada.Ripley’s Aquariums and Red Lobster announced that they would be teaming up to study the curiously colored crustaceans to better understand the anomaly. With Red Lobster’s access to daily catches and local fishermen, the aquariums will have better access to the clawed buggers.

Horie was not a life-long sailor but took to the sport in high school, joining the sailing club and finding what he called a “burning passion for the sea.” Horie hired a shipyard to build the sloop and named the boat after the company that donated the sails. The company, which was looking for publicity, had a mermaid logo painted on its sails, and so the boat wasThenamed.Mermaid was donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum Horie's return to Japan. Horie made a second trans-Pacific voyage in 2002 in a boat modeled off the original Mermaid, known as the Malt’s Mermaid III, made of entirely recycled materials.

DARLING Kenichi Horie, a 23-year-old man from Japan, was the first person to make a non-stop solo crossing of the Pacific, leaving Japan on May 12, 1962, and arriving in San Francisco aboard his 19-foot plywood sloop sailboat the Mermaid on Aug. 12, 1962.The 5,300-mile journey took 94 days, and Horie arrived in San Francisco without official clearance. He was briefly arrested before Mayor George Christopher saw to his release and presented him with a visa and key to the city, according to the National Park Service website. According to an Aug. 25, 1962, article from the Gadsen Times, Horie left Japan at almost 9 p.m. and encountered several storms, including a gale on June 2, just three weeks out of Japan.After hitting another storm, Horie cut off three feet of his 22-foot mast to prevent another gale from damaging the mast. After 94 days, Horie spotted Point Reyes, 40 miles north of San Francisco, and after being tied up at a yacht dock by US Coast Guard, the sailor offered sake and beer to everyone to celebrate his accomplishment. In his book “Koduko: sailing alone across the Pacific,” Horie states that his reason for making the voyage was purely because he could and wanted to.

Despite some protest and incredulity from family and friends, the sailor took to the open ocean with fierce determination. “If you make up your mind to do something--if you are determined to do it--there is only one way to go about it,” said Horie on page 51 of his book. “Work out your own ideas on the general course you are going to follow and stick to them; stand on those basic ideas and assume responsibility for your actions. You yourself have to work out what you think is the best plan and carry it out to the end. You may make mistakes, there may be details in your plan that could have been improved upon by relying on someone else’s advice but basically it has to be your personal responsibility to conceive and carry out the project.”

STATE/NATIONAL/ INTERNATIONAL NOAA Predicts Above Normal Atlantic Hurricane Season  The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s update for the 2022 hurricane season, covering a six-month period that ends on Nov. 30, calls for 14-20 named storms with wind reaching 39 miles per hour or greater. Of those storms, 6 to 10 could become hurricanes with winds reaching 74 mph, and 3-5 storms could reach winds of 111 mph or greater. NOAA provides these ranges with 70 percent confidence. “I urge everyone to remain vigilant as we enter the peak months of hurricane season,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo in an Aug. 4 article on the NOAA website. “The experts at NOAA will continue to provide the science, data, and services needed to help communities become hurricane resilient and climate-ready for the remainder of hurricane season and beyond.” So far this season, there have been three named storms and no hurricanes in

Channel Islands Construction Update for August

On August 20, Matthew Thomas – a coma survivor who was once given a five percent chance of life– will pedal his hydrobike (essentially a bicycle on pontoons) from Avalon to the Orange County Sheriff Harbor Patrol Station in Newport Beach. Thomas will attempt to break his previous record from his 2011 ride, which took him from Catalina to Long Beach. The 30-mile journey is expected to take roughly seven hours. In 1991, Thomas was a passenger in an alcohol-related DUI crash where the car went off a 30-foot bridge near Lake Sherwood. He was thrown from the car through the windshield, landed on rocks, and went into a coma with a grim prognosis of a five percent chance of survival. After three months in a coma, he began the years-long road to recovery. “I woke up paralyzed on my left side – couldn’t read, write, talk, shower, shave, eat or dress,” said Thomas in a press release. Today, Thomas is an in-demand public speaker, brain injury consultant, wildlife photographer, runner, bodyboarder, snowboarder, and avid golfer. “He healed himself in a way that far exceeds any conventional medical wisdom,” said Dr. Philip O’Carroll, Thomas’s neurologist, in the press release. — The application period for Request for Proposals for Fisherman’s Wharf and the property where the previous Whale’s Tail Restaurant was located has closed. The Harbor Department received three applications for the Whale’s Tail RFP. Two from developers seeking to build restaurants and one from a developer who wants to build an aquarium in the area. The department has met with all three developers and consulted with the Harbor Advisory Committee and may go forward to the Board of Supervisors soon and recommend entering an Exclusive Right to Negotiate with one of the developers interested in building a restaurant. There were four applications for Fisherman’s Wharf. Three applications wanted to build projects, specifically visitor-serving in accommodations, restaurants, foods, and other services. Another application was a mixed-use project, combining those visitor services with a residential component. Again, the harbor will look to consult with the Harbor Advisory Committee. The Harbor Department also requested Bids to repair the revetment around Peninsula Road. This project is necessary for the Hyatt House Hotel and new Peninsula Anchorage projects to move forward.

QUESTION: During their regular monthly service on my boat, my dive service broke the threaded studs that are used to secure one of the zincs to the hull. This would normally be a minor fix, but the studs are molded into the foam core in the bottom of the swim step and the repair will apparently require the boat to be hauled from the water at a shipyard. Boat owners may be reluctant to ten der a claim like this to their insurance company because it may let the respon sible party - in this case the dive service - escape liability for the damage. Howev er, if this is a significant and straight-for ward claim, the insurance company will probably initiate their own “subrogation” claim against the dive service. Subroga tion is a process spelled out in a provision t hat is found in most property damage insurance policies. Under that provision, the policy holder (the boat owner in this case) assigns his or her claim for damage to the insurance company, which allows the insurance company to pursue the re sponsible party after they pay the claim to the boat owner. The question of whether a claim like this will be paid depends on a long list of criteria specific to our reader’s claim. We can’t really address those specifics here, but we can look at this in gener al terms. I will go out on a limb and say that a claim like this will in many cases be covered. Marine insurance is designed to cover damage caused by negligence. That negligence is not limited to you fall ing asleep at the helm and running your boat aground. It covers all kinds of neg ligence, including the negligence of the people you hire to work on the boat. Recreational marine insurance pol icies are generally “all-risk” policies, which means they cover everything un less the policy expressly excludes a partic ular peril. Boat owners should familiarize themselves with the itemized “exclusions” listed in their policy, but negligence of a hired repair or maintenance worker will usually not be excluded. The bigger risk of denial will come from the physi cal condition of the threaded studs. Dam age caused by corrosion is excluded from coverage in every marine insurance pol icy, and our reader’s claim will probably be denied if the studs were significant ly corroded.Ourreader will face other roadblocks if the threaded studs were corroded. If the insurance claim is denied, the next logical step would probably be to pur sue a litigation option. A litigation claim against the dive service would seek to es tablish that the diver was negligent when he broke the threaded studs. A claim of negligence will compare the actions of this diver to a hypotheti cal standard of care for all divers, and if t his diver failed to meet that standard, he will be found to be at least partially negligent. This type of evaluation usually requires expert witness testimony to es tablish the standard of care, and the ex pert would look at all of the circumstanc es surrounding the incident. Here, those circumstances may include the corrosion of the threaded studs. The corrosion may let the diver off the hook if it is established that any diver working on the boat would have broken the threaded studs. Or his liability may be reduced to a percentage of fault if the evidence is not entirely clear. In any case, the claim against the diver may be com plicated by the same issues that may com plicate the insurance claim. As noted ear lier in this article, litigation will involve a very long road to recovery, and as such most claims should be tendered to the insurance company before considering litigation. Gary Clausen passed away on July 25. Gary was born and raised in Antioch, California, and spent most of his life in his beloved hometown. He was the youngest of three siblings and was just as close with his brothers Tom and David as he was with his parents, Carolyn, and Hardy, rarely missing a chance to spend time with them or simply give them a call. He had a long career in the marine industry, starting in boat sales before switching gears to sell boating insurance. He co-founded and owned Twin Rivers Marine Insurance in Antioch which recently expanded to Newport Beach. Gary was also a former president of the Northern California Marine Association. Few people shared his expertise when it came to boating and insurance, and he loved to share his passion for boating with others. Gary was also a barbecue enthusiast, frequently waking up at 4 a.m. to put a pork shoulder on the smoker, then working all day to share a good meal with his friends and family. Anyone who knew Gary would put it simply; he was a nice guy. His friendship and love showed no bounds, and he had a major impact on nearly everyone he Garymet.will be missed by his wife Mary, his son Andy, his brother David, as well as many, many others. A memorial service will be held at St. Ignatius of Antioch Church on August 19 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Antioch Historical Society.

The beloved diner that resided at the end of the pier since 1996 will now be replaced by a new restaurant. By: KATHERINE M. CLEMENTS HUNTINGTON BEACH — The new restau rant, Bud & Gene’s, debuted on July 26, t aking the place of the beloved local restaurant, Ruby’s Diner, at the end of the Huntington Beach Pier. Bud & Gene’s will be open daily to serve a casual, sea food-focused menu highlighting the day’s c atch, plus a separate take-out window for beach-inspired eats, by Chef Jason Witzl, best known for Long Beach favorites Ellie’s, Lupe’s De La Mar, and Ginger’s.Thenew restaurant gets its name from two of Huntington’s first lifeguards nearly a century ago. The names repre sent a lot of history from Huntington Beach as it was named after lifeguards Delbert “Bud” Higgins and Gene Belshe, who surfed on 135-pound surfboards and organized the first surf contest in 1933. In later years, Higgins became the Huntington Beach fire chief, and Belshe became the assistant police chief. Bud & Gene’s is a work in progress and will specialize in sustainable seafood and burgers, with possible plans to mod ify their concept in the future and pos sibly expand. For now, the restaurant is operating as a “pop-up” of sorts. The cur rent menu ranges from casual to gourmet entrees and, as of now, operates from 11 a.m.- 8 Restaurantp.m. group RAV LLC is devel oping the new restaurant. John Cunin, t he director of development for the restaurant group, told the OC Register in an interview that «everything is on the table with respect to change.» Howev er, Cunin also said there is also perma nence, “I don’t mean to be cryptic, it’s just the Accordingtruth.” to Cunin, Bud & Gene’s is only in its first phase while the concept for the restaurant waits to be finalized. The future will bring a possible hiatus for additional renovations. Ruby’s Diner lived at the end of the Huntington Beach Pier since 1996, re placing The End Café, the diner filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and ultimately closed in Feb. 2021 due to financial struggles that couldn’t survive the COVID-19 pan demic. The 50’s-styled diner was part of a chain of 32 other restaurants known for their malts, burgers, and fries. A significant reason for the company prematurely opened its unfinished proj ect early was to be open during the Vans US Open of Surfing which ran from July 30 through Aug. 7, an event that draws in thousands of visitors. Before striking out on his own, Witzl held the executive chef post at Her ringbone Santa Monica and worked in some of the world’s most esteemed kitch ens, including the James Beard-nomi nated M.B. Post in Manhattan Beach, t hree-Michelin-starred Martín Bera sategui in Spain, Campanile in Los An geles, and The Water Grill in Los Ange les. At Bud & Gene’s, Witzl applies his scratch cooking and fine dining culinary techniques to seasonality and a sincere commitment to responsible and sustain able sourcing by leveraging his longtime relationships with local growers, purvey ors, butchers, and fishermen. W itzl has modified the vibes of the former diner by introducing raw ahi, chili prawns, and whole grilled fish to the menu. Although certain items may be fancier than what was offered at the diner, Bud & Gene’s also offers a burg er, fried chicken sandwich, fries, and soft serve ice cream. The outside takeout window that Ruby’s slung to-go malts from will remain a feature for take-out orders.“Growing up in Whittier, I have fond memories of coming to Huntington City Beach and walking down the pier with my family,” said Witzl. “Opening Bud & Gene’s is a full circle moment for me and I’m looking forward to welcoming generations of beachgoers to this icon ic location.”Thealmost 26-year-old, 6,905 square-foot former Ruby’s Diner building has finally been stimulated with its significant deferred maintenance needs being addressed. In the assessment, we determine that reintroducing sea otters to parts of their former range could help restore nearshore ecosystems, increase gene flow between sea otter populations, benefit the threatened southern sea otter, and provide overall economic gains to coast al communities. The assessment isn’t a r eintroduction proposal though. As we go forward, we’ll be working with scien tists and a broad range of stakeholders to make sure any actions we’re considering are fully vetted and that we’re taking into account input from everyone who might be affected.”Thereintroduction of the species would occur over a 13-year period, and the estimated cost ranges between $26 million to $43 million. The estimated range of cost was created based on a se ries of scenarios from capture techniques t o reintroduction sites chosen. DARLING A feasibility report released this sum mer shows positive signs for the future possibility of the reintroduction of south ern sea otters to parts of their former habitats in California. While the report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is not a recommendation to reintroduce the species or a proposal for reintroduction, it does assess the effects of sea otter reintro duction and studies known information. Sea otters lived throughout the north Pacific Rim, spanning from Japan down to Baja California. They became a targeted species for the fur trade in the 1700s, a nd by 1911 the species was almost ex tinct, with the population remaining in a few small pockets. The study is a com panion to a study released by an Oregon n onprofit, Elakha Alliance, which re leased a study in Aug. 2021 for the rein troduction of otters in Oregon. The study released this summer fills in for the fea sibility of reintroducing the species in the a rea between northern California from around San Francisco Bay into Oregon. In 2021 Congress directed the USFWS to conduct a feasibility study for reintro ducing sea otters to the West Coast. The m andate zeroes in on the otter’s “criti cal ecological role in the marine environ ment as a keystone species that signifi cantly affects the structure and function of the surrounding ecosystem.” Sea otters have been the subject of re introductions in the past, and the study s tates that roughly one-third of the world’s sea otters are the result of success ful reintroduction efforts in the past in parts of Alaska, British Columbia, Wash ington, and Oregon. I n the study, the USFWS found that the reintroduction to otters in northern California and Or egon is feasible but “ would require work to overcome some challenges particu larly in the socioeco nomic sector.”

If they move forward, the USFWS would need to initiate a National En vironmental Policy Act review process which would include a public review and other stakeholder consultation before any formal decisions are made.

The Mayfly Project is committed to a 1:1 mentor ratio when working with children in foster care to ensure valuable time with their mentor and create the most efficient way to teach fly fishing.

Jess Westbrook reached out to the famous fly-fishing artist, Andrea Larko, to have her create a logo for The Mayfly Project because Jess wanted to have a captivating symbol they could share with their community.

The Mayfly Project aims to support children in foster care through fly fishing and introduce them to their local water ecosystems.

A small insect called a mayfly has become the inspiration behind a nonprofit organization that has 63 ongoing projects across the United States to educate foster children and bring excursionsfly-fishingtothem.

Lastly is The Big Catch Stage, where the kids have their final fun day fishing in a special location and receive their fly rod and“I’vegear.been taking kids in foster care fly fishing for a long time,” said Barn hart. “I have a mental health background a nd was taking kids up here [North ern Idaho], but I didn’t actually have a non-profit set up. It was just something I loved to do and would do it on the side.”

Today, TMP has 62 active projects across the United States, and one in the United Kingdom. Projects reoccur yearly once they have begun. First, a lead men tor is sought out and assigned a proj ect in their region. That lead mentor is then in charge of recruiting more mentors to participate in the project. Once that foundation is solidified, then TMP is tasked with reaching out to foster homes or group homes and finding children to participate.“It’sbeen pretty easy to find men tors, honestly,” said Barnhart. “Fly-fish ing people and the fly-fishing communi ty, they are just so generous. People are e xcited to really, you know, share their sport.”Each project is five sessions with a group of about ten mentors and ten chil dren. The one-to-one ratio ensures that e ach child has their own mentor and doesn’t become overwhelmed in the large group setting. The smaller the group, the better quality of the lessons. The children are taught the basics of fly-fishing, from tying knots to how to catch the fish. TMP only practices catchand-release, and the children are intro duced to conservation efforts such as protecting against invasive species and picking up trash. The project is limited to five sessions because foster children often move in and out of their homes. The proj ects are organized as something the chil dren can start and finish; it gives them time to get to know their mentor and al lows the opportunity to fish in different locations across their current residential region.“Our LA project just started this last year, and it’s this really neat group of peo ple too,” said Barnhart. “If anyone wants t o mentor or support that project, that would be huge. Our first-year projects are always like, you know, looking for ways to fundraise and just get more kids out. The LA project is the second project to hit California after the San Francisco project. The L.A. project is led by Jane Miller, a 27-year-old educator who also mentored for the Seattle project in 2018. It is a team of 12 mentors and 6-8 chil dren from the foster care Olive Crest and t he Department of Health and Welfare.

This project is sponsored by RFO Hold ings Ltd and the Fontamillas family. “ We have a uniform process for add ing projects, but they’re all pretty much the same, just in different locations,” said Barnhart. “They [mentors] go through an application process, and then we decide who were going to choose for that year.” For those interested in becoming a mentor, The Mayfly Project website has application forms for current, specific, and new projects. CLEMENTS ARKANSAS — Motivated by the birth of his son, a Benton, Arkansas, man and his wife developed a unique idea for a pro gram based on the life cycle of a mayfly t hat brings fly-fishing to foster chil dren. Jess Westbrook and his wife Laura formed The Mayfly Project in 2015, one year after the birth of their son sparked the inspiration to help children in foster care in their surrounding neighborhoods in Arkansas.Fourmonths after its launch, Idaho native Kaitlin Barnhart caught wind of the project and was intrigued to tie in her own efforts and work alongside the West brooks to expand TMP beyond Arkansas. This was the birth of the national pro gram, which hit the streets of the United States in 2016 after the three part nered up. T MP’s name and a structure are mod eled around the life cycle of a mayfly, a fly often used as bait in fly-fishing. The first stage is the egg stage which resem bles the introduction to fly-fishing, the fly rod, and TMF project mentors. Stage two is the nymph stage. The nymph stage is when insects undergo partial metamorphosis, and for TMP, it’s when the children learn casting, knot tying, catch and release, and it’s time to start catching fish. Stage three is the emerging stage, when the mayfly makes its way to the top of the water. For TMP, it’s when the kids practice setting the hook, practice conservation and education, and can cast on their own. After the mayfly emerges, it emerges as a dun. The mayfly then flies to a bank-side vegetal area and trans poses into a spinner. This happens with in a few minutes up to a day. During a T MP dun stage, the kids learn to read the water, mend lines, and roll casting.

3. Make a second half hitch by pass ing the working end behind the standing part, back over the top, and through the loop as shown. Then snug up everything nice and tight. 4. This is how the completed hitch should look. It can be made even more secure by whipping the working end alongside the stand ing part; but only do this if you h ave no plans to take the hitch apart in the future. Sheet Bend The sheet bend is used for joining two ropes of similar or differing diameters to each other. One of the easiest knots to learn, it’s quick to tie, and very useful for extending dock lines.

2. Pass the working end down and behind the standing part, then tuck it through the loop formed by the round turn.

5. For additional security, or ropes that are slippery, pass the work ing end around the back of the k not a second time, to form a dou ble sheet bend. Bowline Easy to tie, the bowline (pronounced bow-lin) is probably is one of the most useful of knots that the boat owner can learn. Used for making a temporary loop in the end of a rope, a bowline is easy to untie, even after it’s been under considerable load.

Fisherman’s Hitch A fisherman’s is ideal for securing a rope to a shackle, anchor ring, or other such thing, and is the perfect solution for attaching an anchor rode to an anchor. When done correctly, it is very secure. Al though it can be made even more so by whipping the working end to the stand ing part of the rope once completed. Un like many knots, the fisherman’s hitch w ill pull itself up very tightly, and can be almost impossible to untie if any strain has been placed upon it. 1. Start by passing the working end around the ring twice, from back to front, to form a round turn.

Hybrid propulsion is any vehicle propulsion sys tem that includes two or more propulsion sources in one design. They can be used together or alternately. “So, let’s say we’re dealing with a Volvo,” said Means. “So, you buy the Volvo 220 horsepower diesel that comes with a transmission from Volvo, we unbolt the transmission, we drop in our piece which is a clutch and an electric motor, bolt on the transmission, put it in the boat, and then you select whichever one. So, if you want to go fast, you’re not limited.” The boat features no generator. Ac cording to Means, a generator is unnec essary on a Greenline Hybrid because the solar panels power the electricity. “The solar recharges the LiPo bat tery packs, which will then turn the elec tric motors, in whatever model [of yacht] you’re in, and then if you want to, you flick a switch, and you’ve got the Volvo or Yan mar diesel, or Cummins diesel, in front of t hat so you can go full power. [Go] full speed to Catalina, get into the moorings over there, switch back to electric power, and move into your mooring. Spend the entire week or weekend on the boat. If it’s sunny, you can stay there indefinitely. It’s literally the best bug-out boat you could ever imagine.” said Means. The hybrid system features four modes of operation with a simple and easy-to-use control system. The user in terface is as simple as pushing a button to switch between diesel and electric navi gation modes. In addition, the Greenline Hybrid can collect, store, and use electri cal energy from the sun, the shore con nection, or the engine. While the boat is in electric mode, it is designed to navigate in and out of mari nas or anchorage with no noise, smoke, or little wake. If the vessel is traveling at four knots on a fully charged battery pack, the boat has roughly 20 miles of range. In ad dition, the diesel engine propels the boat and drives the alternator, which also re charges the battery pack. “A lot of these new electric boats, un less they’re the new ones on the foils, but a nything that’s in the water, there is no range because no one has come up with a battery that’s going to give you any se rious range,” said means. A lthough diesel is involved, the Green line Hybrid Yacht is an admirable system to enter the world of electric boating. Ac cording to Means, the current all-electric boats on the market are limited to about 40-60 miles at true cruising speed. “The batteries have to catch up for us in boating in order to have a viable sys tem,” said Means. “Whereas in hybrid system, you buzz from the jetty opening to Avalon, you shut the diesel back off you back on to the full solar-powered electric engine and you don’t use any further fuel for the rest of your trip until you want to leave Avalon and come back to Newport or Long Beach, wherever you’re going.” Currently, in the United States, Green line Hybrid Yachts are sold in five states, Florida, Illinois, California, Maryland, and Washington. Bayport Yachts is the only broker in California that sells the model.“Here in the U.S., there’s only about six of us Greenline dealers all over the U.S. and Canada,” said Means. “It’s really a niche boat with some specialized train ing. The guy that walks in and he knows what the battery capacity is before you do. He knows how much solar is being generated on a sunny day. So, it’s a fun sale, but it’s also very technical because the buyer is very well educated.” J.R.’s father, Jack Means, his wife, and some partners opened Bayport Yachts in January of 1987. J.R. joined the team in December of 1988 after graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in engineering. Catalina Has Bison and Now Buffalo…Chips That Is.

A lumber schooner, the Azalea San Francisco, anchored at the Redondo Beach railroad and shipping wharf between 1904-1910. The weather-beaten wharf contains tracks used by small railcars to transport materials after being unloaded from the boats. At the center, tall wooden structures serve as a primitive crane device to lift cargo off boats and onto the railcars. A large rope is laid out across the left side of the wharf. With the sails down, the schooner is parked along the left side of the wharf. Its deck is loaded with lumber. Men on the schooner and the wharf are working hard to unload the lumber. A small rowboat is parked behind the schooner on the left. By 1890 the Hotel Redondo had opened, and Redondo Beach became a place for tourists. The railroads and steamships brought people along to the city, but they also brought the lumber and oil industry. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Redondo was the first port to open in Los Angeles County, according to the Redondo Beach website. San Pedro Harbor was developed in 1899, and by 1912 the Pacific Steamship Company stopped calling at Redondo. Lumber schooners like the Azalea San Francisco continued to use Pier No. 3 at Topaz Street until the railroad pulled out in 1926.

Each year, more than 200 visitors head over from the mainland for a chance to break a record and take home a trophy in this lighthearted competition.

“The board of directors of SOY always believes in providing access to the water and wonderful water activi ties for our local teens who live on t he Westside of Costa Mesa,” said Mary Cappellini, executive direc tor of SOY. “They live so close to t he ocean and Newport Harbor but do not have the same ability to pay for expensive sports, like sailing, surfing, and boating because of theNewportcosts.”

S OY seeks to empower teens within Newport-Mesa Unified School District through academic and social programs that motivate them to learn, grow, and make positive life choices. SOY has pro vided free sailing lessons for youth for 25 years in collaboration with the OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship.

Coast College’s School of Sail ing & Seamanship is offering scholar ships to students served by the Costa Mesa nonprofit Save Our Youth allow ing them to partake in a week-long sail ing camp where the kids are taught boat ing basics and then allowed to get out on t he water for a hands-on lesson. In ad dition to sailing camps, SOY also offers water activities, including whale watch ing during spring break and surf camps during the summer.

Harbor and Corona del Mar high schools in Newport have sailing teams and programs that Estancia and Costa Mesa high schools don’t. “ Newport Harbor high school has a sailing team, and we are hop ing to get students from SOY who learn to sail to try out for the team,” saidACappellini.ccordingto Cappellini in an interview with the Daily Pilot, giv ing kids a chance to sail helps cre ate more equity between schools in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. The program prepares kids to think about the courses they might take at a school like OCC which has conducted a sailing program for more than 70 years and preserves an annex facility in New port Beach, where the camp is held. A lthough OCC’s sailing program of fers lessons to hundreds of young peo ple each summer, SOY students can now at tend thanks to a grant awarded by the California State Parks’ Division of Boat ing and Waterways, which works to sup ply safe public access to the ocean, lakes, and rivers.

LONG BEACH — The Shoreline Yacht Club, Dana Point Yacht Club, and Dana West Yacht Club are collaborating to host the 38th Annual Labor Day Race from Long Beach to Dana Point. The race will start between two orangewhite flags between Oil Islands White and Grissom in Long Beach Harbor. The race is open to ocean racing or cruising sailing vessels whose owners are members of a yacht club or sailing association recognized by US Sailing or the Southern California Yachting Association. Monohull boats will need a current PHRF rating certificate; multihull boats will need a current ORCA rating, and all boats must meet United States Coast Guard requirements. The first warning is set for 10:55 a.m. the race committee will be stationed in Dana Point until 6 p.m., after which racers will be responsible for keeping their own time. PHRF and multihull boats will each have their own fleet, and boat fleets will be divided into classes based on type and number. There will be double-handed and allwomen scoring classes within PHRF spinnaker classes. By: JORDAN B. DARLING REDONDO BEACH — The Santa Barbara Yacht Club, in collaboration with the King Harbor Yacht Club, hosted the 49th Annual Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race on July 29 and 30. Seventy-five sailboats took to the wa ters to travel 81 nautical miles around A nacapa Island with a long downwind leg that finished out in South Bay. The race offered a beautiful view of California’s coastline as competitors from thirty different yacht clubs grouped into nine fleets raced to the finish. Fleets were separated by performance and included a cruising fleet and a multihull fleet. Yachts reached up to 60 feet in length. The first boat, a Reichel/Pugh 63, GoodEnergy , skippered by George Hershman of Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, crossed the finish line just before 11 p.m. Hershman finished with the lowest elapsed time of just under 11 hours. Craig Reynolds of Balboa Yacht Club on BOLT was the overall winner with the lowest corrected time. The lowest corrected time and the overall multihull winner was the Corsair 37, Mental Floss, skippered by Jeff Cohen of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. The lowest elapsed time and the low est corrected time in the ULDB D class were taken by a Hobie 33, Flying Dutch man, skippered by Jason Herring of King Harbor Yacht Club. Several social events were held throughout the weekend, including a cocktail party, a barbecue at SBYC with an awards party, and a traditional big shrimp feed at KHYC after racing. Pacific Halibut Fishery Closed After Three Months Due to Catch Limits

The recreational Pacific halibut fishery has closed as of Aug. 7 after projections showed that California would reach or over exceed its 2022 recreational quota.Theannouncement from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife came on Aug. 4 after data released on Aug. 2 showed that California was already at 35,778 net pounds out of the allotted 38,740 pounds for 2022, the season opened on May 1. The CDFW tracks the progress of the fishery throughout the year, receiving monthly catch estimates from the California Recreational Fisheries Survey to ensure that the state remains within the allotted catch. The CDFW tracks progress throughout the season and confers with the National Marine Fisheries Service, the International Pacific Halibut Commission, and the Pacific Fishery Management Council to review projected catch amounts and determine the closure date for the fishery. The annual quota is determined by the IPHC, which meets in January of each year to determine the yearly Fishery Catch Exploitable Yield, which is reported in net pounds. Once the FCEY is set, the NMFS takes over at the federal level, collaborates with state agencies to distribute portions of the FCEY to each state, and sets the fishing season dates as federal law; the California season typically opens in May. In September of each year, the PMFC meets and proposes changes to the Catch Sharing Plan for the three west coast states, Washington, Oregon, and California. At this point, the public can make suggestions to the CDFW about changes to the CSP. On July 28, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced upcoming changes to California’s groundfish sport fishing regulations expected to start next year. These changes are in response to recent scientific information implying some nearshore groundfish species are in decline. As a result, fishing seasons will be shorter in nearshore waters to reduce pressure on these stocks. However, new opportunities in deeper water are foreseen. The Pacific Fishery Management Council designed the upcoming changes over the past year. They reflected the results of a public decision-making process where the CDFW worked with fishing industry representatives, non-governmental organizations, and state, federal, and tribal governments to balance the need for fishing season closures in nearshore waters with the necessities of these communities and industries. The PFMC approved the recommendations for 2023 and 2024 at its JuneBasedmeeting.onthese recommendations, the National Marine Fisheries Service has begun amending federal regulations, which are predicted to take effect in January 2023. In addition, the California Fish and Game Commission is considering identical changes to ocean sport fishing regulations for state waters. California’s sport groundfish regulations separate the state into five “Groundfish Management Areas,” where the fishing seasons, Rockfish Conservation Areas or depth constraints, and bag limits may vary. In 2022, the nearshore groundfish fishing season ranged from eight to 10 months, but in 2023, they are expected to shrink to less than five and a half months in all areas. The 10-fish daily limit for rockfish, cabezon, and greenling, with sub bag limits of one fish each of quillback and copper rockfish, and four vermilion rockfish will hold in 2023. These sub-bag limits have been in effect since January 2022 and were critical because the information presented in 2021 revealed severe declines in quillback and copper rockfish populations off California. In addition, recreational vermilion rockfish catch continued to be more significant than sustainable harvest limits. The sub-bag limits and shortened fishing seasons are expected to complete necessary reductions in copper, vermilion, and quillback rockfishWhilecatch.groundfish fishing seasons will be shorter for nearshore waters and some bag limits are reduced, new opportunities to fish in deeper water beginning in 2023 will allow anglers to target healthy populations of shelf and slope rockfish in deeper waters. Opportunities such as mid-water schooling of widow and yellowtail rockfish or bottom-dwelling black gill rockfish will become an option for anglers. Additionally, the sport fishing seasons for some other federally managed groundfish species like sablefish (sometimes called “black cod” or “butterfish”) will be open yearround without depth constraints. Access to these formerly closed depths means access to unknown ventures for anglers as they explore new habitats, new fishing locations, new target species, and new gear configurations to assemble and deploy.“Next year is expected to bring a momentous shift in the sport groundfish fishery as all but one of the overfished shelf species that drove management decisions for the better part of the past two decades are now healthy,” said CDFW Environmental Program Manager Marci Yaremko in the July 28 press release. “While concerns for quillback and copper rockfish will impact the nearshore fishery in the coming years, there are also a number of new opportunities for anglers, and CDFW looks forward to supporting their development.” To stay up-to-date on in-season regulatory changes, call the Recreational Groundfish Hotline at (831) 649-2801 or visit CDFW’s summary of recreational groundfish fishing regulations.

FEATURED CATCH “Offshore some fantastic opportunities,” said Donna Kalez, COO of Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching in an Aug. 9 email. “The Fury has had a great week getting in on that kelp paddy fishing. Nice yellowtail counts a few days this week with some good mahi in his counts too…Dana Pride crewman Otto Knottnerus with the gaff on the mahi for this lucky angler.” Mahimahi or dolphinfish are native to tropical and sub-tropical waters and can reach speeds of up to 50 nautical miles per hour, according to an article on Sciencing. The fish is identifiable by a sail-like dorsal fin extending nearly its entire body and the iridescent bluish-green and yellow color. The largest recreational catch of a mahimahi on a rod and reel is an 87-pound fish caught off the coast of Costa Rica in 1975.

The summer offshore fishing season keeps getting better with bluefin tuna, dorado, yellowtail, and yellowfin tuna providing memorable action that continues to improve. fishing for yellowfin tuna has been hit or miss with a lot more yellowfin being seen than what are biting. Anglers are hoping and expecting that the yellowfin will change their habits like the dorado did and start biting with better consistency sometime soon. The yellowfin being caught have included some nice sized fish that have ranged in size from football-sized 10 pounders up to 60-plus pounds with a recent report of a couple of 90 pound yellowfin being caught by a private boater fishing out of San Diego.

• There has been a massive influx of dorado into Southern California and Northern Baja waters! During the past 10 days dorado fishing has improved in a big way with a lot of the dorado changing their habits and biting better. Dorado are being caught around kelp paddies and from spots of breezing fish found under working tern birds. Sardines and small trolling feathers are working well for the dorado which have been running from 5 to 20 pounds.

• The kelp bed calico bass fishing and other surface fishing has responded to the improved water conditions with calico bass going back onto a good bite and with some improved yellowtail activity being reported at the kelp beds at La Jolla and Point Loma. There is not yet much yet to report in the way of biting yellowtail but improved numbers of yellowtail are being seen in both areas since the water conditions improved.•Productive calico bass bite kelp bed areas have been at the upper part of Point Loma, La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Leucadia, Carlsbad, the Barn and San Onofre.

The past weekend saw one marlin caught and released off Church Rock at Catalina and I have an unconfirmed report about another having been caught and released by a boat fishing the ridge above the West End of Catalina. In the San Diego area there was a recent marlin catch and release made at the upper end of the 9 Mile Bank and there was a marlin jig bite incidental to fishing for dorado at the middle part of the 9 Mile Bank. Outside of Oceanside there was a recent marlin hookup incidental to fishing for dorado for a boat fishing 13 miles off Oceanside. Further up the coast, there have also been occasional marlin encounters reported in the region of the 267 Spot off Dana Point and in the area 4 to 6 miles off Dana Point.

• The fishing at Los Coronado Islands has been very good for a mix of yellowtail, calico bass, barracuda, bonito and an assortment of bottom fish species. Some of the better days of fishing have produced limit catches of yellowtail. A recent fish count from Mission Belle out of Point Loma Sportfishing was that 23 anglers on a full day trip caught their limits of 115 yellowtail along with 29 calico bass, 1 halibut and 7 bonito.

• The best spots for calico bass and barracuda have been at the kelp bed areas around South Island and at the Middle Grounds with the hard bottom at the north end of South Island also being a productive area for both calico bass and barracuda.
