LEAD BOAT || REGULATOR 26XO

All-Day All-Star

With a fishin’ mission enhanced by family-funday features, the Regulator 26XO encourages more time on the water. Sometimes the word crossover, when applied to a boat, means the manufacturer is trying to appeal to owners who want to do more than one activity, whether they be fishing, watersports or dayboating. Regulator is a bit different. Its newest model, the Regulator 26XO is a crossover — the XO doesn’t mean hugs and kisses — but in a nod to the builder’s mission, the boat is a fishing machine, one that can make inroads in skinny water and head offshore, thanks to a 14-inch draft with the Yamaha F300 up and a 17-degree deadrise.

>regulatormarine. com

2

Oh, and it’s capable of pulling tubers, skiers and boarders, and it can cruise all day. OK, so it is a multi-activity crossover boat. It can cross over between fishing environments and between missions. But its fishing features abound. A 60-inch trolling motor and a 10-foot Power Pole Blade are

options. The bow has more than 200 gallons of storage in three fishboxes, locking rod storage and a 56-quart cooler seat. The helm includes a Garmin 16 Fish package, and under-gunwale rod storage flanks it. Built into the helm seat console is a tackle center with a 32-gallon livewell; folding transom seats convert

to a casting platform. Rod holders and outriggers complete the fishing look. It’s ready to roll. When the rods are put away and the coolers and fishboxes are full of food and beverages, family activities are enhanced by a removable tow bar (optional), an integrated swim step, a retractable swim ladder, a T-top for shade, seating for at least 10 people and a standup head compartment in the console. Heading to shore for anything won’t cross anyone’s mind. Powered by a single 300 hp Yamaha, the 26-foot, 9-inch multitasker reached 45 mph during Yamaha testing and cruised most efficiently at 28.8 mph, where the outboard attained 2.36 mpg. Seating abounds on the 26XO, and storage hides under almost every seat. The compact but fully functional helm is protected by a hardtop and windshield.

TRAILERING RAMP CRISIS

DEAL WITH A RAMP CRISIS Know what to do when the tires start slipping and a viral moment seems imminent. a trailerboater has, except for not being able to back up smoothly in front of spectators, is having the tires start to slip as the boat — and tow vehicle — goes into the water. A quick “Launch Ramp Follies” search of YouTube yields dozens of videos that show sport utility vehicles underwater and pickup trucks being dragged out as water pours from the cab.

PERHAPS THE GREATEST FEAR

Many factors can lead to this slow-motion disaster: launch ramps slippery with algae, steep ramps and tow cars pulling heavy boats. Here’s how to avoid going swimming. First, eyeball the ramp and talk to other skippers. If you can’t walk down to the water’s edge without slipping, stay away or

find a spot on the ramp that isn’t so slippery. Once you’re set to launch, go slow. Really slow. The gang at the tiki bar overlooking the ramp was split on whether to use reverse all the way to the water or go into neutral on the slope and just roll backwards, out of gear, riding the brake. I like neutral, because then I know I’m never

going to hit the wrong pedal. The weight of the rig pulls the tow vehicle backwards, but slowly. As a precaution, the driver should be the only person in the car, seatbelt off and windows down, in case he has to make a hasty departure. If it ever gets to the point where the boat is ready to launch and the driver has to get out of the car, he should apply the handbrake. Hard. Put the tow car in park or the first manual gear forward. If you don’t have to get out of the car to launch the boat, stay behind the wheel,

4  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2020

+ Sea WCF new3.indd 4

7/27/20 8:38 AM

don’t use the parking brake and keep your foot on the brakes. Hard. The parking brake only locks the rear wheels on most cars, so keeping your foot on the brake adds the friction of two more tires higher up the slope to prevent slippage.

SLIP SAVE Feel the car starting to slip? You have a couple of choices that may, or may not, work. Pump the brakes several times, which may help the tires grab. Or drop into low and try to power out moving forward. Some of the tiki hut watchers said they’d seen drivers literally smoke the tires, but they agreed that was one way to burn through the algae. Launch regularly at a slimy ramp? Make a couple of tire chocks out of lumber. A 4-inch-by-4-inch board works best. Tie ropes to them so they’ll follow the tow car up the ramp, and set them about where you expect either the front or rear tires to stop for launching. They are especially useful on ramps that have a grooved finish where the lumber can snag. Another possibility — beforehand, unfor-

tunately — is to rethink the tow car’s tires. In many cases, so-called “off-road” tires, or snow tires, have less actual tread on the road than a conventional tire because of their deep sipes or grooves. One experienced trailerboater said he always carries a bag of sand in the back of his truck for just such a slippery slope, and another has a 10-foot trailer extension that allows him to keep the tow vehicle on the flat (and dry) area when launching.

OTHER RAMP CRISES You back the trailer into the water to retrieve your boat but find that you can’t pull the trailer out because the wheels have dropped over the edge of the paved or concrete launch ramp. What has happened is too many skippers have raced their boat engines to load onto their trailer, and those powerful underwater currents have eroded the bottom away from the end of the ramp. This is usually a low-tide/low-water problem, but it is still your problem. Start by unloading the boat, because you’ll never pull the weight of the boat and trailer up a 2-foot wall without a skyhook. Have

someone deal with the boat separately, so you can focus on getting the trailer wheels up onto the ramp again. If you have room, crank the car wheel hard left or right and back up slowly as far as you can go, being careful not to T-bone and bend your trailer. Get right to the water’s edge, straighten the wheel, go forward and repeat the process. Doing so allows you to take the trailer out at an angle. The trailer wheels are more likely to climb the edge if it’s just one side at a time. Pull forward slowly and see if one side pops free, then get the other side onto the ramp. To retrieve your boat in the same spot, back up carefully to the ramp drop-off, but no farther. You can usually find the drop-off easily by having someone wade (carefully) to the edge and guide you, or by using a boat hook from inside the boat to probe the depths. This is one of those times when it’s a good idea to talk to other skippers familiar with a ramp, because they’ve probably gone “over the edge” themselves and know where the safe launch areas are located.

TRAILERING RAMP SIGNALS

HANDY AT THE RAMP Hand signals and visual cues are an important part of launching and retrieving a boat. experienced trailerboaters can feel stress while launching and retrieving a boat. There’s often a crowd watching, and one false move can lead to a boat-ramp mishap. Most of the time, however, having a friend who knows how to guide the driver onto and off of the ramp is a big help. If, that is, both parties know the best hand signals and visual cues to use.

LET’S FACE IT, EVEN

Going Down Backing the boat down the ramp is often the toughest part of the job. But your assistant shouldn’t just point a finger in the direction you need to go. A fully outstretched arm is much easier to see in the side- or rearview mirror. Obviously, he should point his arm and fingers left if the boat needs to move to the left, and right if the boat needs to move to the right. When the backing job just won’t cut it, the assistant should stretch

VERBAL EFFICACY Wait a sec. Why are we focusing on hand signals? Because truth be told, it’s rare parties can communicate verbally in an effective fashion from the dock to the tow vehicle, even with a raised voice and the vehicle’s window open. Outboards are idling, people are chatting and trucks are driving nearby. And trying to hear someone standing 20 or 30 feet away often can lead to miscommunication. One exception: a loud “Stop!” shouted by an assistant is pretty easy to interpret most of the time, and it is one of the most commonly used verbal signals. But even when yelled at full volume, a “Stop!” should be accompanied by a palm-out, hand-up visual signal, to make sure there’s zero confusion.

both of his arms toward the vehicle with his palms showing forward in an unmistakable sign to stop. To let you know you need to pull up to straighten the boat, he should wave his arms forward with fingers pointing forward, by bending at the elbows and then extending slowly but repeatedly. You should know that when your helper’s arms stop waving forward, you’ve moved forward sufficiently to straighten out the trailer, but he can communicate this directly by

leaving his arms up with a pair of closed fists, indicating it’s time to hold position. Then, he can turn his palms back and wave his arms away from the vehicle, to indicate it’s time to start backing down the ramp again. Right and left signals can be used to keep the trailer on track, and when the boat’s sufficiently wet to float off the trailer, another palms-forward stop sign lets you know to hit the brakes. He should follow this up with a display of closed fists to tell you to shift into park and hold position again. When the boat’s off the trailer and secure at the dock, a simple and easy-to-understand thumbs-up or “OK” sign will let you know it’s time to safely pull away and park the rig.

Going Up The same process can be repeated with the same hand signals when backing the trailer down for a retrieval. But pulling a boat out of the water often requires more exact trailer placement than dropping it in, because the bunks have to be submerged at the ideal depth. In this case, the assistant can indicate small adjustments need to be made by holding his left arm at a 90-degree angle out from the body, bent another 90 degrees at the elbow and pointing straight up, with the pointer finger and thumb extended but slightly separated. Then he can extend his right arm to either side or wave it forward or aft, as appropriate, to communicate whether the trailer needs to go slightly left, right, forward or back. Once the trailer’s position looks good, a simple palm-out stop signal can let you know to stop. If a closer look verifies that the trailer is exactly where it needs to be, he should hold up closed fists to indicate it’s time to shift into park. Then the assistant can step in, winch the boat into position and attach the chain to the bow-eye. Once the boat’s ready to be hauled up, he can then step clear and give you another thumbs-up/OK sign to indicate it’s safe to pull the boat out of the water. Use these visual cues to get the boat into and out of the water without any hassles. There’s one other hand signal — guess what it is — nobody should ever have to use at the boat ramp.

motion, window/door and pressure sensors under mats and rugs. Water sensors detect high-water levels in the bilge and pump cycles. In addition to sensors, many surveillance systems include cameras (that record) and GPS for geo-fencing, which means keeping a boat within a set perimeter. Comprehensive systems that include the above are many.

ELECTRONICS MONITORING & SECURITY

Electronic boat monitoring and security are available for trailerable boats … and on a budget. REAL-TIME MONITORING HAS BECOME a way of life. Parents can track their teenager’s

date, adult children can monitor their mother’s blood sugar, and pet owners can follow their dog’s visit to the park, all via a cellphone. So why do boats still sit at the dock alone and unprotected? According to BoatUS statistics, more than 5,000 boats are stolen annually, and only one in 10 stolen boats is recovered. Almost 75 percent of these are less than 26 feet long. Nearly 50 percent of boat thefts occur in Florida, and 75 percent of those are boats on a trailer. Nearly 70 percent of boats that sink do so at the dock, so even if a boat stays put, it may not actually be afloat. With today’s technology, boat owners don’t need to be a Rockefeller with a superyacht to have the latest tools at their fingertips to both monitor a boat’s health and track its whereabouts. The latest

budget-minded solutions can update boat owners with notifications via text, voicemail or email, and owners can remotely watch video surveillance footage over Wi-Fi, cellular or satellite networks.

SENSORS & BEYOND

Most electronic monitoring systems include a few different critical components, of which sensors comprise the lion’s share. Sensors can monitor batteries for low voltage, the refrigerator for loss of temperature, and on/off switches such as lights or an ignition start. Boarding and intrusion alerts are made possible by

Yacht Protector offers an all-in-one-box solution — literally in a box — with colorful wireless sensors that communicate with a core unit that can be powered by a battery for up to two weeks. Installation requires no wire cutting, the system is expandable and monitoring is comprehensive. Alerts include instant push notifications via email or text, and the system works via apps on mobile devices or on a computer. An outlay of about $1,300 includes the system, four sensors and a year of subscription service, which may be split into two six-month periods, so buyers can ostensibly cover two boating seasons. Surveillance and tracking are done via 3G or 4G, Wi-Fi or satellite. Trailerboat owners may only need a geo-fencing function. Siren Marine’s MTC system includes GPS/geo-fencing tracking with wired or wireless sensors. The basic system starts at $599 plus a buyer’s choice of variously priced sensors that track location, high water, temperature (in case of fire) and motion, and detect unauthorized entry. Buyers can install the system on their own but will need Siren’s free app for iOS or Android and a subscription for $18 per month. Boat Command is another comprehensive DIY-ready solution. The base unit costs $300 and most of the sensors and a relay unit are about $30 each. The monthly subscription is $8.99 and the system monitors numerous aspects, including leaks, unauthorized entry, low battery

JUST ARRIVED in Seattle: NEW APOLLONIAN YACHTS 52

It’s here.

Finally a boat BY Northwest boaters FOR Northwest boaters. Designed by renowned naval architect Howard Apollonio and overseen by Vic Parcells and his Northwest-based team. We started from scratch with brand-new tooling, building these boats with state of the art, all vacuum-infused deck and hull. This first boat came out great, and is fully deserving of Howard’s signature. The new Apollonian 52 has a 16’ 8” beam, great walk-arounds, with a massive interior, three huge staterooms, three heads, a day head in the pilothouse, and an engine room to be marvelled at. Finally, a new boat to replace your Meridian, Navigator, or Carver, but all-new from the keel up. We will have three boats available over the next six months.

Apollonian Yachts Contact: Vic Parcells (206) 229-3134 vparcells@crowsnestyachts.com

ASK THE EXPERTS voltage, anchor drift, low or high interior temperatures, or unintended shore-power disconnections. The Android and iOS apps have a straightforward interface and the system works on 3G cellular service, so it’s effective even if a marina or personal dock doesn’t have Wi-Fi. Another solution is Spot Trace. A small unit, just 2.6 by 2 inches, it can be kept aboard in a hidden location. It costs $120 and operates with a subscription fee of $10 per month. Spot Trace sends texts or emails with the boat’s latitude/longitude if the vessel starts moving and crosses its geo-fencing parameters. The waterproof unit runs on AAA batteries and acts like a watchdog as it rides along, out of sight. If a boat is moving at 70 mph down a highway when it should be on its trailer in a storage facility, the owner will know. Today’s electronic surveillance and tracking solutions are affordable, easy to install and reliable. Boat owners don’t need to break the bank to have an eye in the sky.

GRINDING GRID’S GEARS

Mondays suck. THERE ARE JUST AS many Mondays in a week as any other day. Count them yourself. Sometimes there are more Mondays than other days in a month, but those are months when the banks float my customers’ payments and I have to wait an extra day or so when a holiday is involved. So if there are an equal number of Mondays as there are any other day of the week, why do folks say “Mondays suck?” I’ve had ugly Tuesdays and Thursdays, some irritating weekends trying to take care of people who forgot that this year, like most, had Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, and the engine didn’t get better by itself over the winter just because the grand-kids were coming. Who says Mondays suck? Everybody. Who’s everybody? You know, the people on Instagram, or Facebook, or texting or twooting. That everybody. I don’t know those people because I just got rid of my bag phone and got a flip phone. Before you laugh about my being mired in the 20th century, dip your fingers in some engine oil and swipe the face of the phone as though you’re going to answer it. Whatever happens when you do that, believe me when I say that

those new style phones don’t float when you get frustrated and throw them. Wasn’t sure you knew that, so I feel better now. Okay, this week “everybody” is right. This Monday sucks. I have had a boat since I was 6 years old. All of them leaked and sank until my brother and I got a 16’ aluminum boat in the late 50s. I had just begun work for my father as an OMC mechanic-trainee and took no time at all to discover the benefits of a boat that floated. As I rigged boats, and corrected wiring problems I saw that builders had no consideration for anyone who had to work on their product, and contortion became a way of life for me. By the time I was forty, I could assemble a string of epithets describing a boat manufacturer’s heritage that would have his mother denying she had anything to do with his being on earth.. The older I got, the more I realized the last boat I had where everything suited me was the aluminum boat with the outboard and

the gas tank. Period. Over a period of years, spouses, and children, I went from one unserviceable boat to the next until one day I discovered that under a beautiful layer of fiberglass in my latest center console were worms that couldn’t stop reproducing.. Burn pile material. It was serendipity that I had a customer with a 19’ Wellcraft that had a blown engine, and I’d just bought a beautiful low-hour Johnson 150. A marriage made in heaven! I installed a bimini, hydraulic steering, replaced the stereo, added a hand-held VHF and a nice Garmin GPS and I was ready to boat. Everything had a meaning/function, everything was done right, everything was easily accessible.. Then winter came, we covered the boat. Then summer came and I was working on other boats. My brother used it with his family, as did my brother in law. I enlisted their help tarping it for storage. Spring came, same scenario. The phrase

Patent No. US 8,109,221 B2

“Repeat if necessary” comes to mind. And then I became older. Lots of replacement parts that didn’t like jumping, and getting in customers’ boats required a lot more skill and adroitness than I had even when I was supposed to have it. We put the boat up for sale: honest description, honest price, non-negotiable. The first person to agree to the price and to treat it the way I would bought himself a boat. The Nurse says I sounded like a father giving his daughter away (I have had ‘sperience, y’know), but I want to know the boat is being taken care of the way I would have. He’ll be here tomorrow for a test drive with ME. I have a checklist a fighter pilot would yell at. I have a shut-down list that the pilot would come to tears with. This Monday, and subsequent Mondays, will suck. I’m not selling the boat because I want something else. I’m selling the boat because I’m “infirm.” That sucks. And so will tomorrow, Monday.

With the R-27, Ranger Tugs takes the classic tug-style boat and powers it with a Yamaha F300 outboard.

MOST BOATERS HAVE FELT the urge to leave

all their cares behind, jump in their boat and go cruising, and a tug/trawler-style vessel epitomizes this lifestyle. Then reality sinks in. Most boats of this ilk are heavy, slow and awkward to tow, which limits owners’ cruising options to locations adjacent to their backyard. Fantasy killer. With the R27, Ranger Tugs takes the classic tug-style boat and powers it with a Yamaha F300 outboard. Doing so transforms it into a go-anywhere, do-anything machine that fits the lifestyle of most recreational boaters.

UNIQUE FACTOR

The first things that jumped off the spec page at me were the Ranger Tug R27’s 8-foot, 6-inch beam and its 7,000-pound weight, which isn’t unduly heavy for a 27-foot hull that stretches to an overall

length of 32 feet, 9 inches, including its expansive swim platform. Owners can tow this pocket cruiser to any of the 49 continental states without acquiring wide load towing permits or jumping through any hoops, such as displaying flags or signs. And it can be towed by conventional vehicles, such as a Ford F-150, which can handle up to 13,200 pounds with its smallish 3.5L V-6 EcoBoost engine. This opens up all the famous cruising grounds, including the Inside Passage to Alaska or the Great Loop. Got cabin fever during a brutal Michigan winter? Hook up the Ranger Tugs R27 and head to the Florida Keys or to Ft. Lauderdale for a quick hop to the Bahamas. While one might think the relatively narrow beam would make for cramped quarters within the pilothouse’s salon (yacht-speak for the enclosed social area),

the interior feels spacious. Of course something had to give, and in this case it’s the narrow perimeter walkaround. But Ranger Tugs found a workaround to this by bolting on a Starboard strip overhang that’s slightly canted inward to the walkway to provide sure footing. The combination of that strip, tall grabrails and a bow rail along the way provides a secure feeling during the transit forward. And on the bow is one of the boat’s coolest features, a tall doublewide lounge seat.

PERFORMANCE

Boats such as the classic Nordic Tug 26 are pure cruisers that feature diesel engines — a Volvo Penta D3 150, as one example — mated to a straight inboard, which vectors off some of its power due to the driveshaft angle. Combine this with a displacement hull and we have a boat that cruises at 9 SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2020  15

Ranger Tugs, rangertugs.com This fuel economy and a generous 150-gallon fuel tank give the boat a range of 270 miles, after subtracting a 10 percent reserve. To really stretch the boat’s reach, 1000 rpm yields 4.33 mpg at 5.2 mph, according to Yamaha tests, which translates to a theoretical range of 585 miles.

I jammed the throttle with trim down and without using the standard Lenco trim tabs, and the R27 just seemed to come up on plane with little bowrise or a defining moment when the bow dropped down. While cruising in the mid-30s, I spun the vertical wheel hard over and the boat carved a tight turn, though I did momentarily lose visibility because of the cockpit roof. To make docking easy, a bow thruster is standard.

BEST USES

The Ranger Tugs R27 is fully equipped for cruising with a standard features list that includes a Garmin 8612 chartplotter with an xHD radar array, autopilot, a full galley, and 140-amp solar panels. Many tugs and trawlers are designed for living aboard, but the R27 really shines as a

plugs and pads. But it also works for social gatherings thanks to twin fold-down bench seats and a convertible dining seat that faces aft. The front half of the convertible dining seat flips forward to create a doublewide helm chair. The inward side of the teak dining table flips up to conserve space when it’s not in use and reveals a grabrail and cupholders. The table also drops down to create a berth. The forward V-berth is the master. Add the extra wow factor of a stern electric grill, and parties take on an extra dimension. The grill is easy to remove when not in use and reveals a large insulated cooler that can be converted to a livewell. A standard popup ski tow will likely see heavy use, and the rear swim platform is large and well-suited for watersports staging. Topside is a rack that can hold kayaks or standup paddleboards.

PREFERRED SETUP

Ranger Tugs couldn’t have made the choice easier when it comes to equipping the R27. Buyers have two choices that are largely based on their geographic whereabouts. The Northwest Edition ($199,937) is, as its name would imply, for cooler climes, such as the area where they are built near Seattle. In addition to the aforementioned downriggers, which are useful for targeting salmon and halibut, this version includes a diesel forced-air furnace. The Luxury Edition ($199,937) includes inverter powered AC. A look at the standard equipment list should explain the prices, as both versions are absolutely loaded with features; owners can go cruising the day they take delivery without checking a single option box. The list of big items that are usually options includes a windlass complete with an anchor, chain and line; a yacht-like standup head compartment with a vessel sink, a hot shower and an electric head; a 2,000-watt inverter and a six-speaker Fusion stereo with zone control. The galley includes a propane stove and oven with two tanks, a refrigerator/freezer, plenty of food prep space, a sink and storage. To make the dream of cruising any place, anytime a reality, one need only add a EZ-Loader triple axle for $13,670. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2020  17

W FE ATURE

BY CHRIS CASWELL

Wooden boats are to fiberglass boats what books are to tablet computers. Wooden boats, like books, are something to hold, to savor, to cherish. Perhaps it has something to do with the heft of a wooden boat or a book, and that substantial quality adds to one’s pleasure, whether on the water or reading a mystery tale. Wooden boats have been with us since the first caveman floated past on a tree trunk, eventually hollowing it to get his feet out of the water. Today, vintage wooden boats are celebrated nationwide at gatherings of “woodies” with legendary names from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s such as Chris-Craft, Gar Wood and Hacker. Acres of varnish and polished chrome harken back to a gentler time of golden afternoons

on a lake or river, with the warmth of varnished wood and the tingle of spray on the skin. Then, of course, came fiberglass, the miracle material that promised to be maintenance free (sound of laughter). Boats made of it were called plastic toys or worse: legendary yacht designer L. Francis Herreshoff compared fiberglass to “frozen snot.” With the advent of fiberglass, wooden

speedboats were devalued and many once-gorgeous runabouts ended up being chain-sawed as firewood. But those of us of a certain age tend to celebrate the objects of our childhood dreams, which accounts for so many middle-aged men driving (or at least collecting) ’58 Corvettes or wire-wheeled Jaguars. There is a downside to owning anything vintage, however. It is old, as those with vintage ’Vettes or Jags soon discover. Classic “woodies” require maintenance. Lots. Of. Maintenance. They require varnishing regularly and re-caulking to keep those deck stripes white. Old can also be a synonym for unreliable, because the world has moved so far forward in technology that you never SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2020  19

+ Sea feature Wooden new.indd 19

wonder today, as you put the key in the ignition of a car or boat, whether your treasure will actually start. The good news, at least for skippers lusting for an oldie speedboat, is they can now choose from several boat builders that are still using wood to build “contemporary classics” with all the lines of those childhood runabouts and none of the problems. The difference is that these boats benefit from modern engines, modern electrical systems, modern everything. And they not only offer the reliability of today’s systems, but owners can get parts and service everywhere. WHAT THEY ARE First and foremost, they are still wood. Mostly. Mahogany remains the material of choice, often with oak for frames and/or teak for cockpit floors, but here’s where the similarity stops. Vintage boats were nailed or screwed together, while modern incarnations often rely on high-tech resins such as West System epoxies to hold the wood together better than even screws.

When they’re streaking atop the water, modern wood classics such as the Grand-Craft 27 Custom Classic — a Mercury big-block engine and a bow thruster are up-to-date touches — harken back to the early days of powerboating.

The craftsmen at Grand-Craft, located just three miles from the original ChrisCraft factory in Holland, Mich., prefer Philippine mahogany for its flexible strength and sound/shock absorption, but especially for its lasting beauty. Each piece is selected for a particular use, with straight-grain for the sides and ribbon grain for the transom, while walnut and oak are used on dashboards and storage compartments. Comitti boats, built in the foothills near Italy’s Lake Como, start with African mahogany logs that are cut and seasoned for a year. Grand-Craft uses two layers of color-matched mahogany on the sides with three layers of one-quarter-inch mahogany on the bottoms (larger boats get

added layers). Using laminated keels and chines and modern cold-molded mahogany for the sides, each Sea Sonic deck is finished with mahogany strips separated by blond Canadian maple dividers for a classic look. One advantage that old-time builders lacked was precision when it came to fitting pieces: every piece of wood was hand-cut and relied on the craftsman for a proper fit. Today, five-axis computer-controlled routers such as those used by Comitti shape the mahogany precisely, making complex shapes such as the transom, frames and stringers with extreme accuracy. Builders of modern classics can also change the “look” of a woodie by careful wood selection: the StanCraft Darkside 35-footer uses black mahogany for a stealth-fighter look. But there are still secrets. Boesch from Switzerland uses a proprietary “laminate construction” that the folks there claim eliminates the disadvantages of conventional planked wooden hulls and is as easy to maintain as fiberglass.

7/27/20 1:54 PM

COATED BEAUTY Modern epoxy resins have come to the rescue of buyers who fear cans of varnish, badger brushes or dreaded sandpaper. With gleaming mahogany hulls encased in epoxy coatings, the pain of owning a woody is gone. At Comitti, the modern vacuum-bagging technique created for building cored fiberglass boats is used to fully saturate the mahogany planks with epoxy resins, encasing the hull with epoxy to create a low-maintenance hull that looks great. Other builders use two- and even three-part epoxy finishes that offer up to eight years between refinishing. At Hacker-Craft, the entire hull is sheathed in fiberglass, which provides long-term protection in fresh or salt water and gives the builder the ability to add color to the hull.

Even with modern epoxies and other building techniques, wooden boats such as those built by Van Dam (below) require lots and lots of the human touch. Even before it’s complete, the Grand-Craft 26 Super Sport being framed here takes on a beauty that aficionados of traditional boatbuilding techniques can appreciate.

WHO DESIGNS THEM? Some boat builders have resurrected old designs, such as Gar Wood and Hacker, while others, such as StanCraft and Sea Sonic, are creating new designs with classic styling. Chris Casparis, the owner of Sea Sonic, has a passion for Riva Aquaramas, collecting and restoring them since learning his trade in Switzerland, so it’s no surprise that his boats, now built in British Columbia, draw on Riva styling. Van Dam, a family-owned builder in Michigan, works with many notable designers and is currently building a Michael Peters design, among others. Peters has drawn up Cigarette race boats but also loves classic styling. Gar Wood, located on Brant Lake in New York, started by restoring Gar Wood’s classic boats, so its custom limited editions are naturally inspired by designs by Wood, a legendary boat builder and racer.

WHO BUYS THEM AND WHY? Modern classics appeal to skippers who want to reinvent childhood memories, or simply because a wooden boat is undeniably a delight to behold. “‘It’s a work of art’ is perhaps the comment we most often hear,” said Eric Badcock of Hacker Craft. “The retro/timeless look of wood boats offers a classic with great lines. They are, simply put, beautiful to look at.” Several of the builders offer custom construction, which has been embraced by the owners of megayachts who not only want a tender that is unique but one that can even match the styling of their yacht. WHAT MAKES THEM GO? One of the problems owners of vintage vehicles face, whether it’s a 1940s Jaguar or a 1920s Chris-Craft, is they can’t just pop in to a neighborhood auto supply for parts.

22  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2020

7/27/20 1:54 PM

After World War I, Chris Smith bought huge quantities of engines from surplus Jenny biplanes, and these inexpensive but “powerful” — 90 hp! — engines allowed him to not only reduce the cost of his boats but also increase the performance at the same time. While it may seem laughable today, his 1923 guarantee that the Chris-Craft three-cockpit runabout could reach a speed of 28 mph was a powerful selling tool. Even Chrysler Crown inline-six engines of the ’30s maxed out at … wait for it … 120 hp. And they usually had cloth-covered wiring to route the feeble 6v power to the sparkplugs. Fuel injection? Unknown. Low emissions? Who cared? Fuel efficiency? Why bother at 20 cents a gallon for gas in 1930? Today, however, you’re more likely to find a current Detroit V-8 (or two) in these woodies, punching out 400-plus hp without breathing hard. Grand Craft uses 430 hp Ilmor engines, derived from modern NASCAR racers, to push its 26-footer to 53 mph. A StanCraft Rivelle 380, with twin MerCruiser 8.2 Bravo engines, tops out at 62 mph. Van Dam is working on a 35-foot speedster with a triple-planked mahogany hull and a pair of Ford 550 hp engines. No final speed estimate has been projected, because the engines are being custom built, but we expect it to be fast. Comitti, with its European background, offers both MerCruiser and Volvo diesel engines, and its SanRemo 21 and Portofino 25 models still top 55 mph. COOL STUFF Modern fiberglass boats have features that are so expected we don’t even think about them but,

(Top) Folks who owned an original 1930s wooden boat wouldn’t recognize the 375 hp engine in Don Don, a ’30’s style deep-V model from Van Dam that can reach more than 60 mph.

for example, there was no such thing as a swim platform in the 1930s. Modern builders don’t let that tradition interfere with stern-situated accoutrements. StanCraft includes transom platforms on all of its models, Hacker-Craft has a seamless boarding package on its Sportabout models, and the Riva-styled Sea Sonic and Comitti boats naturally have integrated platforms. And the custom builders will gladly add platforms to make swimming and waterskiing easy. An offshoot of the transom platform is the freshwater shower for rinsing off after a swim, which didn’t occur to early builders because of the voluminous “swimming costumes” worn by both ladies and gents. Another “modern” invention is the bow thruster, which can change docking a triple-cockpit woody that is 36 feet long but just 7 feet wide from a white-knuckle procedure to finger-tip easy. Speaking of finger-tip easy, most of the original classics had wireand-pulley steering systems to turn the rudder, which not only kinked but could fail or jam at the most inopportune moments. Modern classics rely instead on hydraulic and mechanical steering that adds power as well as reliability. On boats with enclosed cabins, such as the Grand-Craft Commuters, options include air conditioning and heating, electric toilets, and even microwave ovens. And, of course, today’s sound systems were unheard of (bad pun) in boats of the ’20s and ’30s, but every modern classic offers a full sound system with plug-and-play or Bluetooth capability for mobile music, as well as recharging ports for cellphones. NEWPORT BEACH—HALF PONTOON BOAT, HALF bicycle, Newport Harbor newcomer Newport Beach Brew Boat hopes to create a fun and unique experience out on the water with music, drinks and good friends.

NEW HUMAN-POWERED BREW BOAT

PEDDLING IN NEWPORT BEACH HARBOR Newport Brew Boat allows passengers to bring beer, wine, cider and canned mixed cocktails aboard for a 90-minute cruise around Newport Beach Harbor with a licensed Master Captain. BY LINDSEY GLASGOW

36

“I love being out on the water just as anyone else does and I love being around people and I feel like this is a fun way to do both and explore my entrepreneurship goals,” said Michael Kapusta, one of Newport Beach Brew Boat’s owning partners. The recently launched business offers 90-minute tours of the harbor for up to 16 passengers. Docked behind the Peninsula Kitchen and Bar at 2406 Newport Blvd, the bright green and blue cycle boat features a large peddle wheel in the back, which is human-powered by 10 peddle seats onboard. The boat is also equipped with a small motor for when passengers get tired of peddling. The 31-foot pontoon cycle boat is modeled after the land-based pedal taverns popular in many cities. The brew boat supplies a captain, who is certified with a U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain License and one deck hand, who according to the website, makes “sure you have a cold beverage in your hand at all times.” The boat does not provide drinks or food, but passengers can bring their own beer, wine, cider or canned cocktails to drink while cruising the harbor. Due to Covid-19

related regulations, right now, passengers can only book a private tour, but the brew boat will eventually also offer public tours, where individuals can pay per seat. “It’s meant to be fun, interactive, unique,” said Kapusta. “It’s something different, there’s nothing like it in Orange County.” Kapusta runs the business with Chris Ferren-Cirinio and Matt See, who run two similar, successful operations in Sacramento - Sac Brew Boat and Sac Brew Bike. “They were looking to expand their business down into Southern California and it was kind of just a perfect match,” Kapusta said, who runs most of the daily operations in Newport Beach Harbor. Ferren-Cirinio and See have been operating Sac Brew Boat for about three years; they now have two boats operating on the Sacramento River. Ferren-Cirinio said they were connected to Kapusta through the boat builder. “So we just kind of discussed his operation and what it would kind of take to get going and he was asking me for some advice, which I was just happily there to give him,” Ferren-Cirinio said over the phone.

He said eventually the discussions evolved into a business partnership and friendship. There are cycle-powered boats in major cities across the U.S. including New York, Florida, Chicago, Cleveland and Oregon, but Newport Brew Boat is the first operation in Southern California. The business partners have been working on getting permits and the operation up and running since July 2018; Kapusta and Cirinio presented to the Newport Beach Harbor Commissioners in November 2019. Newport Beach Brew Boat took the first tour out over the Memorial Day weekend and is now officially open for bookings. Newport Beach Brew Boat, along with all other businesses, is navigating the new “normal” brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. Kapusta said it has been challenging to open a business during this time, but they have been able to successfully run tours with safeguards in place. “We’ve restricted our capacity, we have our crew wearing

masks, we have a giant screen up there for our captain, we want to social distance as much as possible,” Kapusta said. Capacity is currently limited to 10 passengers and private tours only. Kapusta said they provide hand sanitizer onboard and they spend extra time disinfecting the boat after each trip. Covid-19 is not stopping water lovers from getting out; Kapusta said during these first few weekends of operation, the harbor has been packed. “I’ve heard people say that there were as many boats out there as Fourth of July last year,” Kapusta said. Both Kapusta and FerrenCirinio said they hope to eventually expand in Southern California and add more brew boats. “I always saw myself owning a business that was always the goal,” Kapusta said.

The cycle boat is operating under extra precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Capacity has been reduced from 16 to 10 to allow passengers to social distance, the captain is required to wear a face mask and they are spending extra time disinfecting the boat.

POST-PANDEMIC BOATING:

NEW NORMAL – BUT FOR HOW LONG? Social distancing and strict public health guidelines are in place for people to return to waterways. Will the guidelines be permanent?

BY LINDSEY GLASGOW AND PARIMAL M. ROHIT

SPECIAL FROM THE LOG NEWSPAPER

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA—BOATING THIS YEAR HAS undoubtedly been different than in years past. Masks, restrictions on gatherings, social distancing at launch ramps and even some launch ramp closures are part of the new Covid-19 induced normal for boaters.

However, getting out on the water remains an activity that for the most part, is not off limits. For Owen Sharp and Virgil Talbott, Covid-19 has provided them the opportunity to get their sailboat out for the first time in a year. “It’s easy to stay 6 feet apart,” Sharp said while prepping the sailboat with Talbott in the parking lot at the Davies Harbor Launch Ramp in Long Beach on May 20. Boaters in Long Beach never lost access to waterways; however, the number of open boat launch ramps has been reduced from five to two. Davies and South Shore are the two ramps that remain open. Long Beach Marine Bureau Marine Operations Superintendent Todd Leland said the other three are connected to beach parking lots, which were still closed in the city as of the time this paper went to press. remain open for boaters. “Priority number one is keeping everybody safe and priority number two is making sure everybody gets the opportunity to activate their boat,” Leland said. Leland said the Long Beach Marine Bureau is following the basic CDC guidelines - practicing physical distancing and requiring personal protective equipment - and all, city guidelines and the Los Angeles County Health Order. “Basically, the standard guideline right now is no large social gatherings,” Leland said. “If anyone is activating their boat or out on the water, they should be with their immediate family or those they are quarantining with.” City and county guidelines will dictate when social gatherings – including those on boats - will be allowed and when the city’s three other launch ramps and beach parking lots will reopen. “We’ve had great communication since the start of our health order on March 17 with our boaters and we field a lot of questions; is this open, is that closed, can we do this, can we do that,” Leland said. Many cities and departments – in terms of lasting effects – are evaluating the economic impact of Covid-19 and putting some projects on hold as part of budget

adjustments. “We’re still in the budget process, we’re looking at, we’re evaluating everything that we’re doing and kind of prioritizing everything from a go, hold and stop process,” Leland said. Leland did not mention any specific projects that would or could be affected. He also said he thinks across the board, everyone is going to see a lot more hands-free transactions and a lot more non in-person communications. “Pre-Covid we were taking a lot of walkins,” Leland said. “Whereas now, we’re moving more to an appointment-based and online, email and phone approach.” Like Long Beach and many Southern California harbors, Dana Point Harbor remains accessible to boaters. Signs have been placed at the boat launch ramps to remind boaters to social distance. “Although guidelines are loosening a bit,

social distancing and gathering regulations remain in place,” The Marina at Dana Point reminded boaters in an email sent out May 21. “As we continue to navigate these strange and challenging times, we must adapt to a new normal.” That new normal includes no gathering on dock fingers, gangways, sidewalks and parking lots; no raft ups; no pop-up tents on docks, sidewalks or parking lots; no tables, chairs or umbrellas on the docks, sidewalks or in parking; and no grilling on docks, sidewalks or in parking lots. “We have seen many creative attempts by boaters wishing to gather under the radar,” The Marina at Dana Point said in the same May 21 email. “Unfortunately, a gathering in any capacity is still a gathering and impedes upon safe path of travel for others. The goal is to provide at least six feet of space between you and individuals

Boating in San Diego, meanwhile, appears to be picking up steam. Boat launch ramps in San Diego (Shelter Island) and Coronado (Glorietta Bay) had a steady dose of trailer traffic during Memorial Day Weekend – even with social distancing policies in place.

with whom you do not live.” One, if not the most popular spot for Southern California boaters is Catalina Island. Avalon and Two Harbors both recently reopened their moorings to boaters who don’t live on the island. Memorial Day weekend was the reopening weekend for Avalon Harbor moorings. Avalon Harbor Master JJ Poindexter said while they weren’t up to capacity, it was nice to finally see boaters again. He reported 271 boats came in for Memorial Day weekend, down 44 from the same weekend in 2019. “I still don’t see us being – boat traffic wise – where we were last year,” Poindexter said. Boaters who call in to book a mooring are given a spiel about what to expect. They are also given a flyer upon arrival of the dos and don’ts; boaters are expected to follow

California’s “Stay At Home” order and treat their boat as their home while visiting. “A lot people, they just want to get away from there and so they had no problem coming over and staying on their boat,” Poindexter said. Poindexter said the biggest challenge has been getting everyone to comply with wearing their masks when leaving their boats for food or supplies. “People that call we tell them yea, now we’re open, you have to wear a mask, you have to social distance, the beaches are closed,” Poindexter said. Poindexter said they are monitoring the numbers of Covid-19 cases on the island to see if opening the island to boaters had any effect. As of the time this paper went to print, there had been no new cases reported since Memorial Day weekend, according to numbers from Catalina Island Medical Center. The total number of cases since testing began stood at two. Boating in San Diego, meanwhile, appears to be picking up steam. Boat launch ramps in San Diego (Shelter Island) and Coronado (Glorietta Bay) had a steady does of trailer traffic during Memorial Day Weekend – even with social distancing policies in place. The Port of San Diego, for example, restricted the 10-lane Shelter Island Boat Launch Ramp to four lanes (although, at one point on May 24, The Log’s Parimal M. Rohit observed five cars using the launch ramp, in violation of the port district’s social distancing guidelines). The Log also visited the public boat launch ramp at Coronado’s Glorietta Bay on May 24. Most of the launches were jet skis and other personal watercraft, but a few small boats also found their way onto the water. A steady stream of sailboats, just the same, navigated in and out of Glorietta

Bay Marina. In both instances, boaters and personal watercraft users had to follow new guidelines. The state issued guidelines for outdoor recreational operators to follow, as more people visit waterways and plan boating, fishing or other related trips. “All rented or shared equipment and items must be cleaned and disinfected between visitor use, including sports equipment, kayaks, surf or paddle boards, canoes, bikes, fishing gear, helmets, life vests and other items,” state officials said in a formal recommendation. “Encourage visitors to bring all of their own equipment, wherever possible, to minimize sharing of equipment,” the state’s recommended guidelines continued. “For-hire and small group charter operations must ensure customers have access to handwashing facilities or proper hand sanitizer on the vessel.” Fishing trips would be required to have fewer people aboard the vessel. The state also addressed life jackets and wet suits. “Cleaning and disinfecting ‘soft goods,’ such as life jackets, west suits, cotton lead ropes, saddle bags or backpacks poses particular challenges,” state officials said in their formal recommendations. “Such equipment requires an effective cleaning procedure or sufficient equipment inventor to allow for sufficient ‘down time’ of at least three days between uses to minimize risk of Covid-19 transmission.” The state’s most recent guidelines went into effect on June 12. Visit covid.ca.gov for the latest information and guidelines. How long will these regulations be in place? What effect will these regulations have on businesses catering to boaters and anglers? Time will tell – and The Log will continue to dive deeper into the issue. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2020  41

OCEANS GO QUIET;

WHAT IT MEANS FOR RESEARCH The Coronavirus pandemic has significantly reduced human usage of the ocean, including research. The science community at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is trying to keep data flowing as oceans go quiet. BY LINDSEY GLASGOW

SAN DIEGO—THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC HAS brought a paradox of devastation and clear skies. As many hold their breath as the economy falters, it seems Mother Nature is catching hers as smog lifts in major cities. With commercial shipping, naval and other vessel traffic down, researchers are addressing a similar paradox, investigating what the world’s oceans are like amid quieter waters and how to do so docked from shore. Scripps Institution of Oceanography conducts and is a partner in a wide range of research programs, some of which have been collecting data for

decades a few, centuries. Scripps Whale Acoustics Lab Director John Hildebrand was set to be on a research vessel in the Gulf of Mexico until Covid-19 hit the pause button on those plans. Scripps Whale Acoustics Lab uses instruments weighted to the seafloor all across the planet to study marine animal population abundance, seasonality and behavior. The devices record underwater sounds such as winds, waves, ships, sonar, sounds made by marine animals such as whales and dolphins and more. “Underwater sound is just a really nice proxy for the overall marine environment,” Hildebrand said. “All the way from invertebrates like snapping shrimp to fish and marine mammals; they all make sounds and you can get a good assessment of the state of the environment just by making a sound recording.” Hildebrand is hoping to keep data flowing to provide data on what a quieter ocean sounds like.

Covid-19 safety measures mean many ocean researchers are not able to get out to sea to service their equipment but they are doing the best they can to keep the data flowing amid strange times. Scripps Institution of Oceanography Facebook photos

“I think there will be things to learn and I’m really trying to set ourselves up so we have the data to answer those questions,” Hildebrand said. With a few exceptions, research vessels are docked and laboratories closed as part of health safety measures related to Covid-19. Hildebrand said several instruments off the Southern California coast will need to be serviced in the coming weeks. Since research vessels are docked, Hildebrand said it will be a challenge but is hoping to get permission for a small vessel and small crew to go out. If the devices are not serviced before batteries die, data could stop recording or be lost altogether.

The instrument itself could also become completely unretrievable. “That would be the worst because you’d lose the instrumentation and all the data and a year’s worth of data is very valuable all by itself,” Hildebrand said. With the U.S. experiencing a decrease in international trade, commercial ocean traffic is down significantly. Locally, the volume of shipping at the Port of Los Angeles dropped 30.9 percent in March compared to the previous March and was the lowest amount of monthly cargo moving through the port since February 2009, resulting in a significant economic toll for many industries. “It’s kind of like an experiment is being done, not willingly, but an experiment is being done to make the ocean a quieter place,” Hildebrand said. Sonar noise from naval ships and seismic airgun noise from oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico are other sources of ocean noise Hildebrand thinks will be down

during this time. “I want to keep the instruments alive and then take a really careful look at during this period when noise levels went down, what was different?” Completely preventing data gaps during this time is inevitable. For the first time in 48 years, the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations will not be able to conducts its springtime cruise off southern and central California to collect a suite of data, such as plankton and fish larvae numbers, to study the marine environment, management of its living resources, and the indicators of El Nino and climate change. “These measurements are a part of a unique ocean time series that helps us understand both natural and anthropogenic changes in ocean ecosystems, including possible perturbations associated with the Covid-19 outbreak itself,” Mark Ohman, Director of California Current Ecosystem Long-Term Ecological Research (CCE LTER) group, said in an email. Ohman said while frustrating, it is an understandable precaution that must be taken. CalCOFI surveys are part of the LTRE network and the CCE LTER group takes shipboard measurements and integrates them with measurements by ocean gliders, moorings, and satellites, as well as experimental work. The group cannot get to sea to service their deep water science mooring and cannot deploy some of their robotic ocean gliders. Ohman said continuous time series such as this are one of the important tools used to understand what the natural ocean cycles are and when ocean characteristics depart from that natural variability. He said without the measurements, they’re shooting in the dark. “The management of some coastal fisheries becomes more difficult.” Ohman said in an email. “Our efforts to understand and create future forecasts of changes in processes like ocean acidification, de-oxygenation of the coastal ocean, changes in coastal upwelling, the onset of harmful algal blooms, and the recruitment and growth of key fisheries (both shellfish and finfish) begin to stall.” He said the spring period is a particularly important time for the onset of coastal upwelling, the production of plankton – which is the base of the ocean food web – and the growth of fish larvae.

“I want to keep the instruments alive and take a really careful look during this period when noise levels went down, what was different?”

FILM SERIES ON HISTORY OF SPORTFISHING FEATURING

CATALINA ISLAND

BEING DEVELOPED By Lindsey Glasgow

AVALON—IT’S AN AMERICAN PASTIME ALMOST as old as baseball. Millions share in the passion and their stories often start the same; a young kid goes out on the water and gets hooked. This is how it started for Michael Fowlkes, who is directing and producing a nine-part video series on the history of sportfishing.

Episode one of the nine-part History of Sportfishing will feature Catalina Island’s Tuna Club and founder Dr. Charles Fredrick Holder, whose leaping tuna catch in1898 was the first tuna in recorded history ever caught on rod and reel. History of Sportfishing photo 46

“I grew up fishing the foothills of rural Virginia almost before I could walk,” Fowlkes said in an email. “When we moved to Southern California in the late 1950s I instantly became a fixture at the old Davey’s Locker #2 landing.” The “History of Sportfishing” series will feature 60- to 90-minute episodes produced in the spirit and style of award-winning documentarians, Ken Burns and Bruce Brown. Catalina is the birthplace of big-game sport fishing and will be predominately featured in the pilot episode, “The Birth of Big-Game Fishing.” The origin of big-game fishing can be traced to Dr. Charles Fredrick Holder, with his catch of a “leaping tuna” on Catalina Island on June 1, 1898. This was the first tuna in recorded history ever caught on rod and reel. The catch inspired Holder to start the Tuna Club, which is the oldest fishing club in the U.S. Word spread and sportfishing landings

began to spring up to meet the demand, barges were anchored off the piers and people flocked to the coast to fish. “Offshore sportfishing as the world knows it today was born right here in Southern California,” Fowlkes said in an email. “It’s such an amazing story and one that simply needs to be told.” Following chapters titles in the series are The Birth of Bass Fishing; Birth of Fly Fishing; The Evolution of Rods, Reels and Line; The Evolution of Fishing Boats, Motors and Electronics; Spirit of Competition - Freshwater; Spirit of Competition- Saltwater; Women in Sportfishing and The Future of Sportfishing – Conservation. Fowlkes said the idea for the production has been percolating in his mind for years and he has consciously been trying to put the project together for about four months now. “Even though I have a good idea of the direction, look and feel of the overall project, at this stage it’s still very much a work in progress,” Fowlkes said in an email. “So hearing stories about unsung individuals and what they did back in the day makes it all that more exciting.” Fowlkes started working in the boating and fishing industry at 9 years old as a deckhand. He later earned his U.S. Coast Guard Operator’s License, bought his first charter boat and ran charters in San Diego for six years with his wife Kimberly. He transitioned into a career in television, producing shows for National Geographic, Showtime/The Movie

Channel, Disney, Discovery, Paramount Pictures and ABC Sports. In 1989, Fowlkes created the series Inside Sportfishing, which ran on Fox Sports West for 27 years. The “History of Sportfishing” production includes digitizing thousands of feet of old 8mm, 16mm and 35mm fishing film and hundreds of photos that have been collected over the years. Some of these films are nearly 100 years old. Fowlkes said it’s important to digitize them because time has caused the celluloid filament in the film to dry out and they could soon become dust if not digitized. The digital conversions will then be entrusted for safe keeping to the International Game Fish Association. Funding for the digitizing and the video production is being crowd sourced through a GoFundMe page, gofundme.com/f/ history-of-sportfishing. At this point, it’s not yet clear when the film series will debut. Fowlkes said they are in preliminary discussions about having the theatrical world premier inside the Avalon Casino Theatre. He said they’re also in discussions with the major rev-share services regarding the re-release of the Inside Sportfishing library of over 600 episodes. “The premise being that the series will lead into the release of the ‘History of Sportfishing’ films,” Fowlkes said in an email. “Still too early to know for sure, but it’ll be available world-wide.” For more information on the project visit thehistoryofsportfishing.com/.

YACHT PROFESSIONAL con’t from page 26

three key considerations) of many boats. A professional broker will listen closely to your wants and needs and how they will fit into your lifestyle. The broker will help you find the right boat for you at the best value.

WORK WITH A NETWORK OF CONTACTS A Yacht Sales Professional will offer you a network of contacts by making use of: broker-to-broker relationships established over years of experience; yacht multiple listing systems (MLS); and, the best electronic media, some of which is only available to members of the boating industry.

ESTABLISH VALUE A Yacht Sales Professional will help you establish the fair market value of a boat to help you determine a fair asking price or a realistic offer price. There is a bit of an art in pricing a boat. A professional broker will know comparable boats and where a specific boat fits in the marketplace. If you are a seller working on your own, improper pricing means fewer qualified buyers will be attracted to your boat and it will likely sit on the market piling up expenses without selling. A realistic price is one of the keys to successfully selling a boat. Anyone can look up asking prices on boats in the marketplace, but it takes someone in the business to accurately assess all the factors that determine the value of a specific boat (e.g. condition, outfitting, and location) and to be familiar with selling prices.

current condition, advising how to put it in “show” condition, and recommending services specializing in whatever type of work may be required. A Yacht Sales Professional will outline an advertising and promotion strategy that is tailored for your boat. This will include print advertising, electronic promotion, MLS systems, and boat shows. A Yacht Sales Professional will respond to inquiries and arrange for showings, with a broker present. A seller working on his own can be swamped with unqualified inquiries, no-show appointments, people “just looking,” and maybe, somewhere in that flood, a few people ready and willing to buy your boat. A professional broker takes care of this for you, ultimately finding the buyer for your boat.

NEGOTIATE ON YOUR BEHALF The Yacht Sales Professional facilitates negotiation. The art of negotiating is one of the most important benefits of using a professional broker; they will provide you with one of the best negotiating tools you will ever have – the person who can say, “I’ll have to discuss this with my client and get back to you.” The element of time and insulation from immediate answers is one of the biggest leverage factors that both parties bring into any negotiation. Further, a broker can often help to structure a deal in creative ways to reach an agreement that might not have otherwise been possible. A Yacht Sales Professional will keep small obstacles from becoming insurmountable problems.

GET YOUR BOAT TO MARKET A Yacht Sales Professional will prepare a complete and accurate listing of the specifications of your boat that will be used to develop the print advertising, electronic advertising, and entry into the multiple listing services (MLS). In a matter of hours, a full description and photographs of your boat can be made available to brokers and buyers around the world, or right next door, with a central contact person—your professional broker—available to answer questions, qualify buyers, and arrange showings. A Yacht Sales Professional will help you prepare your boat for sale by evaluating its 50

COMPLETE THE WHOLE TRANSACTION Once an offer is accepted, the Yacht Sales Professional can ease the process of finalizing a transaction. This will include:  Preparing the maze of necessary paperwork.  Making sure all aspects of a deal are properly conducted in a timely manner pursuant to the contract.  Helping the buyer obtain financing with the best possible rates and terms.  Providing the buyer with a list of recommended marine surveyors to represent

him in determining the condition of the boat.  Orchestrating the haul-out or launch and sea trial.  Providing the buyer and seller with the knowledge to properly address the nearly inevitable yacht survey issues. The buyer will have the severity of any identified problems put in context and the names of people who may estimate costs and perform necessary repairs. The seller will get advice on how to adjust the transaction, if necessary, after survey, as well as advice about who to contact to confirm repair estimates.

SAFEGUARD FUNDS A Yacht Sales Professional will safeguard funds in an escrow account. They will assure that any existing loan or other encumbrances will be paid off, or otherwise satisfied, at the time of closing and that no other liabilities remain outstanding. This is critically important to the buyer and the seller and can be a potentially serious hazard in a private transaction not involving a broker.

PROVIDE AN ETHICAL ATMOSPHERE FOR THE TRANSACTION Yacht Sales Professionals subscribe to, and abide by, a stringent Code of Ethics. The role that they play between the buyer and seller requires substantial ethical responsibilities to ensure that both parties are treated honestly and fairly. Without a professional broker, this ethical standard is left to chance and blind trust between unknown parties.

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS You will find that when you work with a Yacht Sales Professional, you will build a lasting relationship and partnership. They will be available to answer questions and provide assistance even after the transaction is completed. They will value your loyalty, anticipate referrals and future business and will be rewarded by having helped you fulfill your boating dreams.
