GetMyBoat— A Platform for Non-Boat Owners, Created by Boaters to Help Both

Whether you want to rent a boat or rent out your boat, GetMyBoat is the smartphone app that is the “Airbnb for boating” and connects users to the water one reservation at a time.

Southern California is a desired destination because of everything we have at our fingertips. Within a matter of hours, we can be boating in Big Bear, the Pacific Ocean, or Pyramid Lake, and these boating adventures have become more accessible for those who are not boat owners.

The GetMyBoat app allows users to rent someone else’s boat by the hour while helping boat owners make a profit.

GetMyBoat began when serial entrepreneurs and co-founders Sascha Mornell and Rafael Collado were out on the water and noticed all the boats sitting unused in dock slips at marinas. They asked themselves, «How can more people access great boating experiences for less?»

A few years later, and with the emergence

of the sharing economy, Sascha and Rafael brought GetMyBoat to life, officially launching in 2013.

Founded originally as a boat rental marketplace, GetMyBoat has grown to offer every type of on-the-water experience – from whale-watching tours and eco-kayaking trips to houseboat rentals and private sailing lessons. Its goal is to help people of every age, background, and budget experience everything the water offers in a fun, safe way.

Applications such as GetMyBoat combat the boat charter industry, a specific market inaccessible to most of the public due to the general cost of the boating industry. In many cases before, the only access to boats was via a travel agent, two levels removed from the boat owner. In addition, the boating industry is less likely to bring in a new generation of boaters. The difficulties of going boating are unfortunate because boating is one of the best ways to have memorable experiences, and it should be easier to find, book, and enjoy.

The GetMyBoat app strives to create a platform that connects people with the water or to generate charter boat businesses that need customers.

GetMyBoat is similar to other rental apps such as Airbnb, where the listings on the platform are boats that individual private owners, charter companies,

and boat rental operators own. GetMyBoat does not have a fleet of boats in various locations.

“We are the platform that brings together renters and boat owners,” said Val Strief, Marketing Manager for GetMyBoat. “The majority of bookings on GetMyBoat are captained charters, and these are often through local charter companies that use GetMyBoat as a tool to book more customers in addition to their own marketing efforts. There’s no

rule against having an independent business and using GetMyBoat. We have over 150,000 listings across 9,300 destinations worldwide.”

Toxic Algae is Poisoning Sea Lions and Dolphins, but What Does it Mean for Boaters and Anglers?

SANTA BARBARA — Hundreds of dead sea lions and dolphins are washing up along the coast of Ventura County, and experts believe it is due to a high concentration of toxic algae. While algae blooms are not uncommon, this is concerning as beachgoers are having to navigate around a shoreline of carcasses.

Over 100 dolphins have been discovered washed up, while others have witnessed sea lions having seizures on the sand.

According to Michelle Kowalewski, the executive director of the Channel Islands Cetacean Research Unit (CICRU), a non-

profit that works to assess any manmade or natural detriments to whales, dolphins, and porpoises in and around the Sanat Barbara Channel, the deaths are likely due to a domoic acid toxin produced by algae.

“That algae gets eaten by anchovies, and then the dolphins and the sea lions eat the anchovies and get sick from the toxin,” said Kowalewski in an interview. “It affects their brain, and then they die.”

Beachgoers and researchers see an average of ten dead dolphins washing ashore daily. The blooms are nothing new, but this level of intensity is, and CICRU hopes the peak of the event is already behind them.

What does this mean for boaters, anglers, and those in the ocean?

Don’t worry, anglers; according to Kowalewski, “this toxin is found in tiny algae cells,” she said. “It would take quite a bit to make a person sick. It can accumulate in shellfish and cause Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning if ingested, but again, concentrations need to be high. A boater jumping into the water would probably not be able to ingest enough to make them sick.”

“Domoic Acid is water-soluble,” said Kowalewski. “This makes it pass through the body pretty quickly without being stored in body tissues. As long as the fish is properly gutted and the intestines are removed, the muscle is fine to eat and not contaminated. Shellfish

are not gutted, and that is why there is a shellfish closure. Levels in shellfish are monitored by the Department of Health, and closures occur when concentrations reach a certain threshold.”

The toxin in the algae mimics a neurotransmitter, essentially causing neurons in the brain to fire continually. This makes the animal seizure and possibly feel disoriented. According to Kow-

alewski, aggression most likely stems from the stress of a wild animal feeling sick and fearing predators. Wild animals become stressed around humans, dogs, and other predators. This is when they bite to protect themselves. Beachgoers are urged to stay away from any distressed animals to prevent any attack. For more information visit fisheries.noaa.gov.

Celebrates its 22 Parks with a Proclamation for Parks and Recreation Month

SAN DIEGO —On July 11, the Board of Port Commissioners authorized a resolution proclaiming its support of Parks and Recreation Month. The Port of San Diego’s Parks and Recreation department manages public access to 22 parks as well as public boat launches, fishing piers, event facilities, and a diverse collection of public artworks for the benefit of public recreation, passive enjoyment, community gatherings, and special events.

Celebrated since 1985, Park and Recreation Month raises public awareness about the role of open public space and recreation in communities and people’s lives. It encourages individuals and organizations to participate in outdoor recreational activities and allows governments and businesses to show their commitment to planning and maintaining green spaces in urban settings.

“As a port of communities, the Port of San Diego prides itself in offering community members and visitors 22

parks along the waterfront, giving the public access to some of the most precious views in San Diego to all,” said Chairman Rafael Castellanos, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners in a press release from July 11. “As we reflect on what a true treasure our waterfront parks are, we would [also like] to recognize the many women and men working at the Port of San Diego that maintain and manage our parks so we can all enjoy them.”

The Port provides opportunities for community events and several other activations through its event sponsorship initiatives called the Tidelands Activation Programs (TAP). TAP was recently amended by the Port’s Board to increase event sponsorship opportunities and to provide a better balance of public access and support for public events at Port parks and venues. Some free TAP events the public has grown to love include the Big Bay Boom, San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, South Bay Pride, Symphony by the Sea, and more.

The Port of San Diego will soon go from 22 parks to 23 following the construction of Sweetwater Park, which is anticipated to open in 2024, giving community members and visitors another waterfront park to enjoy. A 24th park, Freedom Park at Navy Pier, is expected to open in 2029.

Division of Boating and Waterways now Accepting Grant Applications for Boating Infrastructure from Marina Operators

California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is now accepting applications from public and private marina owners for federal Boating Infrastructure Grants (BIG) for 2024. A total of $18 million is available for BIG projects nationally, and the grants can fund up to 75 percent of total project costs, with a maximum available grant award of $1.5 million. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 1.

Funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program, BIG is a competitive program open to both publicly and privately owned marinas to renovate or construct visitor docks, restrooms, gangways, and dockside utility hook-ups to serve transient recreational boaters with vessels 26 feet or greater in length, staying fewer than 15 days.

Approved grant projects would provide the following resources to the recreational boating community:

• Enhance access to recreational, historical, cultural, and scenic resources.

• Strengthen community ties to the water’s edge and increase economic benefits.

• Promote public and private partnerships and entrepreneurial opportunities.

QUESTION:

I made an offer to purchase a boat through a yacht broker and the offer was accepted. The offer was contingent on a sea trial and survey, but I had to back out of the deal for personal reasons before the date of the survey. I sent the broker a written notice as required by the purchase agreement, advising that I was rejecting the vessel. The seller and his broker now claim that I did not reject the boat for a legitimate reason because I never did a sea trial or survey, and they are refusing to return my deposit. What are my rights in a case like this? Do I really need to do a sea trial or survey when I know I will be rejecting the boat? Can they keep my deposit?

ANSWER: Under the circumstances described by our reader, the broker and seller will probably be required to return his deposit. But the answer will ultimately depend on the language of his purchase agreement. Brokers in California use a variety of form contracts, but the agreements published by the California Yacht Brokers Association are the most widely used. Under the terms of the CYBA purchase agreement, the vessel is “deemed rejected” unless the buyer signs a final acceptance prior to a certain date. The agreement does not require the buyer to give a reason for the rejection.

This is the same approach used by the California Association of Realtors in their form agreements for residential real estate transactions, and it dramatically reduces the likelihood of a dispute involving a purchase deposit.

tice of his rejection of the vessel. This would not have been necessary under the CYBA agreement - he would simply decline to execute the final acceptance, which would be deemed a timely rejection of the vessel, at which time he would be entitled to a return of the deposit.

The outcome may be different if your broker does not use the CYBA contract or a similar agreement drafted by an experienced attorney, which may have been the case for our reader. Many yacht purchase contracts are drafted by brokers w ho piece together various provisions from several different documents that they find online. These documents may be created without the benefit of any legal advice, and they may be very ambiguous. For example, many of the non-CYBA forms make no provision for the “signing off,” or acceptance of the survey or other contingency, or they fail to describe the circumstances in which the buyer’s deposit may be at risk.

The question of whether the sea trial and pre-purchase survey must be completed prior to rejecting the vessel may g ive rise to some confusion. After all, the seller and the seller’s broker have both invested time and resources into the transaction, and they may feel like that investment has been wasted if the vessel is rejected for a frivolous reason. But vessel purchase contracts - even when they a re drafted without the benefit of legal counsel - rarely (if ever) require the buyer to provide a reason for rejecting the vessel. And if the buyer already knows that he will reject the vessel there would simply be no reason to follow through with the pre-purchase inspections.

The USFWS ranks, and scores grant requests according to need, access, cost efficiency, matching funds, and innovations that improve user access to the waterways.

DBW, as the pass-through entity for the grant application process, reviews each application and sends the most eligible projects to the USFWS to compete against applicants from other states and territories. contract. Problems arise when, due to ambiguous contract language, it may be difficult to determine whether the contract has been breached. Even in the event of a breach, the contract must include some language which ties the deposit into the seller’s remedy for a buyer’s breach of the agreement. If the language of the contract is so ambiguous that it is impossible for the parties to determine whether a breach has occurred or whether the deposit should be returned, the entire mess will end up in court.

The best advice that I can offer a buyer regarding the purchase deposit is to read the contract carefully and be sure that all of the buyer’s obligations in the contract and the disposition of the deposit are both clearly spelled out. A “form c ontract” published by an organization such as the CYBA will probably favor the broker, but it has been drafted by attorneys and vetted over time, so the ambiguity described above may be avoided. A lso, don’t be afraid of “legalese.” If the language of a contract is so convoluted that it is impossible to understand, a jury won’t understand it either. Ask the broker to explain your rights and obligations in plain English, or - better yet - talk to an attorney.

Killer Whale Seeks Revenge on Boaters, Scientists Say Orcas stay in the spotlight as they have repeated interactions with boaters. While orca interactions in the wild are typically harmless, there has been a spike in aggressive behavior towards boats since 2020, according to Alfredo Lopez Fernandez, a biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Reports of orcas dismantling boat parts off the coast of Spain and Scotland have been making the biggest headlines. Still, more recently, an orca called White Gladis is supposedly acting out of retaliation after being “traumatized” by a boater, and scientists believe the other orcas are learning from her aggressive behavior. Experts claim that White Gladis had a “critical moment of agony,” such as colliding with a vessel or being trapped in illegal fishing activities, LiveScience reported. An event of this nature is believed to make the whale unhappy, resulting in retaliation in the form of ramming boats. South-Wind Shelters around the Sea of Cortez

Early July is a good time for Mexico cruisers to pick out a string of anchorages that provide overnight shelter in southw ind conditions. Why? Because, as a rule of thumb, summer in the Sea of Cortez either brings zero wind (Sailors have to motor a lot.) or boaters get wind from the south or southwest.

Due to the 575 n.m. length of the Sea of Cortez, winds tend to parallel the mountainous spine of the Baja Peninsula, and in summer those winds usually flow from the southeast toward the northwest. Below are 46 of my favorite summer cruising anchorages.

But first, here are three summer exceptions to be aware of.

ELEFANTES

In early summer, one exception to the south-wind rule of thumb is the infamous Elefante. It starts as a finger of cold northwest wind off the Pacific Ocean squeezes through any one of several low gaps in Baja’s mountains.

Then, surprise! That finger blasts down onto the coastal waters of the northern Sea of Cortez and fans out. Elefantes have been known to suddenly smack down unsuspecting sailboats traveling as far as 10 miles offshore, hitting them with a gale-force blast from the west. The only tell-tale is a horizontal tubular cloud (an elephant trunk) up in the mountain gap, which is invisible at night. (See photo.) Two popular cruising grounds, Bahia de Los Angeles, and Gonzaga Bay, are notorious for these unpredictable Elefante blasts.

Corumuel winds are a similarly localized exception to the summer southerly rule of thumb, this time created when e xcessive heat in the lower Sea of Cortez actually sucks cooler Pacific wind up over a low spot in the Baja Peninsula. Corumuels are received as a blessing when t hey cool the breathless, sun-baked anchorages around La Paz. They usually range from five to 12 knots.

CHUBASCOS

By mid to late summer, a different south-wind exception can affect boaters cruising both sides of the mid and lower Sea of Cortez. On the mainland, the taller Sierra Madre Occidentales (10,863’) of southern Sonora and Sinaloa generate daytime thunderstorms, sometimes violent ones. By evening, those active storm c ells roll west down the foothills, plow across the low coastal planes then blast out onto the Sea of Cortez.

Cruisers in certain south-wind anchorages that normally promise a tranquil night might be in for a nasty surprise. Peels of thunder from the east are the first audible warnings that a Chubasco has formed, then lightning crackles across the twilight sky. Suddenly, 30-knot winds from the east whip the anchorage into froth, followed by a thunderous downpour that can last an hour. Big Chubascos

can travel west all the way across the Sea of Cortez. For example, Agua Verde is vulnerable to Chubascos from the mainland.

SOUTH-WIND SHELTERS

OK, let’s look at 46 of my favorite summer cruising (south breeze) anchorages around the Sea of Cortez, from Baja Sur up and around to Banderas Bay.

1. Buena Vista and Los Barriles, the fishing resorts in Bahia las Palmas.

2. P unta de la Ventana, just around the lighted point from Muertos cove.

3. B alandra, Caleta Lobos, Gaviota, False Bay, Playa Erindira, El Mogote: all on the way into La Paz.

4. Espiritu Santos Island: all bays on the west side except Bahia San Gabriel. (See 2 photos, Partida.)

5. I sla San Francisco: north end of the island or southeast corner of The Hook.

6. I sla San Jose’s Amortajada Lagoon: north of the estuary and inside the lagoon.

7. San Evaristo: Either end of Village Bay and north of Playa Estanques.

8. G ato and Toro: above Punta Botella, behind El Toro Reef or off El Gato sandstone ledge.

9. Playa San Telmo.

10. A gua Verde region: Bahia Juanaloa, six spots inside Bahia Agua Verde.

SOUTHERN SEA OF CORTEZ

Rather than repeat standard stops on the well-beaten gringo trail, let’s look at a few lesser-known gems that may prove useful to you in surprise south winds.

7.) La Ventana: Curving around East Cape, Punta Arena de la Ventana lies due south of Isla Cerralvo, and its western flank is a 3-mile powdered sugar beach. We anchor half a mile west of the landmark lighthouse.

8 .) Rincon Bay: Ten miles up the Baja coast from San Evaristo Bay is the wide and uninhabited Bahia Rincon, excellent shelter in south wind behind the bulbous Burro Point. Rincon refers to an inside corner, and you’ll see why, yet this anchorage has views across the channel to

9.) Isla Carmen off Loreto: Puerto de la Lancha on the north side of Carmen Island provides roomier shelter than the t iny south shelf in more popular Bahia Balandra. A trail leads across the island to the ghost town of La Salina.

10.) Playa Santa Barbara: Coyote Bay in Bahia Concepcion has lots of beaches rife with RVs and jet skis. But Playa Santa Barbara is a pristine turquoise gem with 100% south wind shelter and no road in; developers dropped plans to build a hotel here.

11.) Trinity Coves on the northwest facade of Isla San Marcos are safer in south w inds than Sweet Pea shelf, and Trinity has sea caves and snorkeling reefs for entertainment if you get pinned down during a long Southern. From Trinity Coves, you have a great view up to the harbor breakwaters at Santa Rosalia.

UPPER SEA OF CORTEZ

By late October, boaters who summered over in this region’s well known hurricane holes (San Carlos, Guaymas, L.A. Bay, San Felipe, Puerto Peñasco) have developed a serious case of cabin fever and are now eager to move on.

12.) Punta Trinidad: At 37 miles up the

coast from Santa Rosalia, this is red headland is good radar target and a small but handy refuge if you’re caught along this 70-mile stretch between Santa Rosalia and San Francisquito. Anchor off the village beach northwest of Punta Trinidad.

13.) Although more remote, tiny Las Animas Slot has better south shelter than the larger and better-known Bahia Las Animas five miles southwest of the slot.

14.) In the L.A. Bay region, the three best spots are Puerto Don Juan, Puerto Remedios farther north, and Isla Mitlan off c one shaped Smith Island. On Guardian Angel Island, three anchorages with south wind shelter are spread along the island’s remote east side are Isla Estanque, Caleta Pulpito and Puerto Refugio.

15.) Gonzaga Bay’s south end has good shelter two miles southwest of Punta Final’s landmark northern tip (Snoopy Rock); then we tuck into the fjord-like canyons to port. Avoid the broad windswept beaches west of Punta Final camping village.

16.) Punta Bufeo six miles up from lighted Willard Bay has a good anchorage and small village close west of the headland. If rain accompanies the southerly conditions, avoid the flash-flood prone beaches northwest of Punta Bufeo. Also, avoid

t he delta shoal that juts two miles southwest from the southwest corner of Isla San Luis; it breaks at low tides and in strong winds.

If you mark your charts with an “S” symbol near these 16 anchorages that provide south wind shelter, you’ll have more op tions handy, no matter what time of year you are cruising Mexico.

After three days in Florida learning to skipper a big trawler, the author comes away with confidence and a new arsenal of skills

My ankles and back ached as I folded into the front of the engine compartment, alongside the twin diesel powerplants and systems, in Uptick , the 36-foot Grand Banks trawler on which I was ramping up knowledge of handling a larger boat. Captain Chris Day, instructor of trawler training classes for Southwest Florida Yachts Florida Sailing & Cruising School in Coral Springs, Florida, was our teacher for three packed days of close-quarters boathandling and docking, skills I’d been accumulating on smaller boats over the years – plus the hands-on workings of all the onboard systems.

My goal? To take big boats out myself with confidence and possibly skipper a c harter or flotilla vacation with family or friends. Reading and editing stories about boat handling and mechanics is one thing, and I get lots of that in my job at BoatU.S. Magazine. But to move beyond theoretical knowledge, like most

boaters, we’ve got to get hands-on to really know what we’re doing.

Day one – Down the hatch

Chris started by reviewing the boat’s many systems – engines, batteries, filters, heat exchanger, solenoids, generator, air conditioning, freshwater and septic systems – explaining how each works.

“I don’t expect you to know how to fix them,” he said. “But you need to know where to look when something goes wrong.” The word “when” was not lost on me. After all, it’s a boat!

Chris had me locate all the seacocks, explaining the importance of exercising them to ensure they can be closed if needed. We investigated the bilge pump, diagrammed the fuel system, and learned how the engine cools itself and the batteries charge. In addition to being an instructor and delivery captain, Chris is a marine surveyor, and teaches from that perspective, pointing out anything that could be an issue.

By 10:30 a.m. that first day, I’d consumed enough information for a week! It was fascinating to learn how the “leg bone is connected to the knee bone,” so to speak, learning which systems are where and how they work, a process that was slowly removing my fear of “what happens if?” while out on the water.

‘Slow, slow, slow’

An hour later, the only other student on our boat, my friend Rich, and I cast off the lines while Chris took Uptick out of her slip and into open water outside the marina. There he reviewed basic boat handling techniques – pivoting in our own length as well as shifting and steering. As soon as I got behind the wheel, my previous training with the BoatU.S. Foundation’s On-Water Training Program came back to me. I hadn’t run a boat since the previous summer, but the muscle memory was still there.

When it came time to bring Uptick back to the dock, a stressful maneuver

for even seasoned skippers, Chris asked, “What’s the most important thing to remember when docking?”

“Slow is pro?” I replied.

“Close. Slow, SLOW, SLOW!”

After entering the marina and approaching the fairway, Chris had me pivot the boat 180 degrees, back into the

fairway, then pivot 90 degrees into the berth, coaching every step. When I got a little too close to a piling, he calmly encouraged the use of the bow thruster to make tiny tweaks, and … success! There’s little that makes a person feel as empowered as docking a big boat on the first try.

nothing,” said Chris, explaining that when a maneuver doesn’t go as planned, lots of people panic and try to do too much to fix it. “It gets you into more trouble than if you just wait it out.” There are three stages to docking, he said: approach, set up, dock. I’d identified my biggest issue while docking: forgetting to turn the wheel before engaging the gear. I craved more practice.

Gaining experience

“Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it,” is a favorite quote of mine. Nothing was truer during the afternoon docking lesson. After lunch, when we took Uptick out, Chris offered less coaching, and observed. Since the morning’s session, the wind and current had shifted, and my results were wobbly. The wind thrust me down the fairway, I didn’t shift to neutral soon enough, and found myself pushed toward the left side of the fairway. Not only had I overshot the slip, but Uptick was crooked, so I didn’t have room to pivot into the slip.

Rather than fight it, Chris calmly advised going past, turning around, trying again. I took a deep breath, reapproached at a slower speed, set up, and slid Uptick into the slip. Fist bumps! Chris closed the day by giving us piles of homework, plus workbooks and study guides to prepare for our final exam at the end of day three.

Day two – Charting a course, of course

Chris arrived, grabbed coffee, reviewed our homework from the night before, then pulled out a paper chart, parallel rules, and plotters.

“ This morning you’re going to plot our course for today,” he announced. But we had a chartplotter. Why do this on paper, I wondered? He pointed to our destination, Sanibel Lighthouse, and showed how to figure out distance and direction. I had a momentary flashback to my childhood, pre-chartplotters, watching my mother and grandfather teaching navigation for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. It seemed mystical and arduous to a youngster. Turns out, it wasn’t rocket science. Using the plotters, I went from buoy to buoy, measuring the distance against the scale on the chart, then walking the parallel rules to the compass rose to deter -

mine the heading. Chris mentioned that, a s a rule of thumb, running at 6 knots would get us 1 nautical mile every 10 minutes, which I calculated and added to my notes.

Once Chris checked my work, we went through our predeparture checklist, tossed lines, and Rich took us out of the slip and into the ICW. As navigator, I gave him directions based on my notes while spotting the next markers. He watched the compass. We arrived at the lighthouse in exactly the time calculated, never once looking at the chartplotter other than to check speed.

We pulled outside the channel to drop anchor for lunch with Chris on the bow working the windlass, and teaching us anchoring hand signals.

The first time we dropped anchor, it wouldn’t grab the packed mud bottom. We hauled, tried again, and the second time worked like a charm. Over lunch, Chris told us the biggest challenge students have is understanding boat mechanics, that many people take these courses because they’re looking to buy a boat or planning to do the Great Loop, and learning from a pro builds confidence. It was doing that for me.

I plotted the course home using the 200/20 trick – for a bearing less than 180 degrees, add 200 then subtract 20 (essentially adding 180 degrees). I took the helm a nd headed back along the ICW’s Miserable Mile, the infamous narrow channel besieged by strong currents and shallows on either side. ing it tricky to stay centered. It seemed like every time I got back in the middle, I’d find myself hugging the channel markers again – frustrating, but a good lesson in vigilance and the power of current.

The end of the day brought more homework from Chris, cocktails on deck for Rich and me, and more studying. The written test was looming and there was much we needed to go over. After a few hours of cramming, I turned in after midnight, hoping I was ready.

Day three – The final exam

Chris emerged from the morning fog,

hopped aboard at 8:15, and reviewed our homework before taking us over to another Grand Banks in the marina, an older boat with more stripped-down engines, so a little easier to follow the flow, so to speak. The three of us once again pretzelled ourselves belowdecks, and spent a n hour reviewing fuel and oil systems, Chris quizzing us on how each work. Just when we didn’t think we could stand straight again, he sent us to a Sabreline a few slips down with instructions to study the engine room, identify where each system was located, then meet back at the Southwest Florida Yachts office.

There, we found him standing in front of a table of parts. He identified the two types of primary filters/separators, a heat exchanger, impeller, and shaft saver, and explained how they work. He showed us how to remove/replace an impeller – a common part to go bad and a fairly easy fix. Everything was making sense.

After an early lunch, the weather began to clear, and Chris had me take the boat out to the ICW, this time heading toward Fort Myers – a great day for more advanced learning. There was a good bit of traffic in the channel with some bigger, faster boats passing us with large wakes. To avoid getting bounced around,

Chris instructed how to turn hard into the V of a boat’s wake once it passed. We cruised about 5 miles, each one building my confidence. Rich took over as we turned back toward home, pods of dolphins playing and feeding around us. He had his own battles trying to stay centered in the channel, which I admit made me smile, as the day before he’d kept asking why I was having such difficulty.

Back at the fuel dock, Chris taught us how to “spring off” the dock. He held the line at the bow while I shifted into port engine forward, kicking out the stern and rotating the bow pulpit over the dock. Once the boat reached a 25-degree angle to the dock, I shifted into reverse, backed into the fairway, then pivoted to head toward our slip while running the previous days’ lessons through my head.

It was show time. I put the boat into neutral early and glided until I reached the slip. I set up the turn by spinning the wheel all the way before putting the boat in gear. The stern got a little close to the piling, so I added a little starboard engine forward while still allowing it to swing. Once we cleared the piling, I shifted into reverse, used a smidge of thruster to make a small correction, then backed right in. YES! I’d watched others do this maneuver countless times, so impressed, and now I was doing it myself!

After tying up and shutting everything down, Chris handed out the written test of 50 questions, including diagrams. Thankfully it was open book, and I felt

prepared. In the end, Rich and I both passed and received our certificates. But even better, I came away feeling a deep sense of accomplishment. There are few things more empowering than successfully docking a boat that size on the first try and without leaving any gelcoat on the pilings. And we had so much fun! For the first time in my life, I could see myself skippering a charter boat on a beautiful vacation somewhere. Now I knew I could do it!

Take a women-only boat handling class near you

According to industry statistics, an increasing number of women are buying boats these days – almost one-third higher than the percentage of women in the general boat-owning population. Also, women make up nearly a third of those using peerto-peer boat rental services, like Boatsetter. Why take a boating course with students (and often instructors) who are all women? “Women tell us they thrive in an on-water learning environment when they don’t feel pressure or intimidation from husbands or partners,” says Alan Dennison, BoatU.S. Foundation On-Water Training coordinator. “It’s a really different feel than our regular courses, which offer the same curriculum. The women who take our Women Making Waves classes encourage and celebrate each other, and many times come off the boats making plans together.”

Even if you’re not planning to take a boat out by yourself, it’s important for women to learn basic boat-handling skills, especially in case your partner goes overboard or has a medical emergency. Plus, being in control helps reduce anxiety and fear, increasing your enjoyment of being on the water.

DBW is Accepting Grant Applications Until Aug. 10 to Help Keep California’s Waterways Clean.

California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is currently accepting grant applications for t he Clean Vessel Act (CVA) Education and Outreach Grant Program. A maximum of $276,937 is available in federal funding per targeted region to organizations for educating coastal and San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary recreational boaters about proper vessel sewage disposal and the use of pump-out facilities, a nd monitoring pump-out and dump stations.

Congress passed the CVA in 1992 to help reduce pollution from vessel sewage discharges into U.S. waters. The g rant program operates as an important educational prospect for all boaters on how to help keep California’s waterways clean. Releasing sewage overboard creates environmental and human health concerns. To reduce the negative impacts of this harmful action, all recreational boaters are urged to use sewage management facilities, including pump-out stations, dump stations, and mobile pumpout services.

The grant program targets two geographic regions of California:

Everything to Know About Boating in Two Harbors, Catalina Island

TWO HARBORS — Catalina Island is comfortably located off the coast of Southern California, making it a boater’s paradise. Two Harbors, colloquially known as “The Isthmus,” is a small community island village on the Island with a population of 298 (according to the Census of 2000). It is the second center of population on the Island, besides the city of Avalon. Two Harbors is predominantly a resort village, but its location on the west end of the Island is a popular destination for many SoCal boaters. Isthmus Cove near the village of Two Harbors and the secluded coves nearby have mooring and anchorage options to help you make the most of your Catalina Island boating experience.

Once settled, boaters can explore miles of hiking and biking trails or swim through a giant kelp forest and spot up to 50 species of fish and invertebrates in visibility that often transcends 60 feet. Whether you spend time on the water or come ashore and explore, boaters are destined to have a good time in Two Harbors.

The Two Harbors system offers over 700 moorings and anchorages in more than a dozen different sites, including Isthmus, Fourth of July Cove, Cherry Coves, Emerald Bay, Howland’s Landing, Little Geiger, White’s Landing, Moonstone, Hen Rock, Buttonshell, Catalina Harbor and Wells Beach. There are multiple options for the location that fits perfectly for your west-end adventure. Mooring reservations are available starting at 8:00 p.m. each Thursday evening for the upcoming weekend. A 2-night minimum stay is required during regular weekends, and holiday weekends require a 3-day minimum stay.

The moorings around Catalina Island are leased to private parties but are rented out when available. Mooring charges are based on the size of the mooring and

the length of your stay. Moorings are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Check-out time is 9 a.m., and if you wish to extend your stay, contact Harbor Patrol on VHF Channel 9 to check availability.

Mooring Sites:

Catalina Harbor

Catalina Harbor has 96 moorings and anchorage for over 200 boats. Ballast Point, a natural sand spit, extends across a portion of the harbor entrance. A public dinghy dock, picnic facilities, and free pump-out service are available. Contact Harbor Patrol on VHF Channel 09.

Isthmus Cove

With 242 moorings and anchorages for well over 100 vessels, Isthmus Cove is second only to Avalon Harbor in boating activity on Catalina. Shoreboat rides are available year-round, with 24-hour service in the summer.

4th Of July Cove

This gem is west of Isthmus Cove, with 42 moorings and deep water (100+ feet) anchorages.

Cherry Cove

Cherry Cove has 99 moorings and deep water (100+ feet) anchorages. Lion’s Head, a prominent land point on the west side of the cove, protects vessels from afternoon winds.

Little Geiger & Big Geiger Coves

Leased to the Offshore Cruising Club, Little Geiger Cove is an intimate cove with only one mooring. Blue Water Cruising Club leases facilities at Big Geiger Cove, which offers anchorage for ten boats.

Howland’s Landing

The next cove west of Big Geiger,

Howland’s Landing, has moorings for 40 boats. Catalina Island Camp is onshore, and the Los Angeles Yacht Club has shoreside facilities. The Howland’s Landing watershed is the largest on Catalina’s West End.

Emerald Bay

Located west of Howland’s Landing, Emerald Bay has 102 moorings and anchorage for five to ten boats. This cove has a long strip of natural sandy beach for boaters.

Button Shell Cove

Button Shell Cove sits seven miles east of Isthmus Cove. Button Shell Cove has seven moorings and anchorage for ten boats.

Hen Rock

Hen Rock is located a smidgen south of Long Point, which offers 25 moorings and anchorage for 40 boats. With abundant sea life and several reefs, Hen Rock is a great location for diving enthusiasts.

LOS ANGELES — The Port of Los Angeles will host a marine flare collection event on Sept. 9 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. This drive-through event asks visitors to place marine flares in the trunk of their vehicle before arrival. The maximum weight of flares per vehicle is 30 pounds.

E-flare and West Marine coupons will be available while supplies last. In addition, free California Boater

Kit vouchers are available to all participating.  Eligibility extends to residents, businesses, or berth boats within Los Angeles County, and proof of eligibility is required (i.e., license, registration, or slip fee). The Dutch Shoe Marathon Celebrates 50 Years

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Yacht Club and Coronado Yacht Club have co-hosted the summer’s staple Sabot race, the Dutch Shoe Marathon, for five decades. Over 150 junior and senior Sabot sailors sailed from La Playa (SDYC) to Glorietta Bay (CYC) to celebrate this special anniversary this year.

This event proves successful as it enters its 50th year, a n achievement not many regattas have claimed. If you ask San Diego Yacht Club natives, you might hear the phrase “rite of passage.” You might catch a story about generations sharing in the tradition or parents m aking on-the-water memories with their little ones. To honor the anniversary, the regatta is sporting a new theme this year – the 70s. There will be tie-dye tees and groovy Dutch Shoe prizes.

“The Dutch Shoe is a rite of passage for new sailors—regardless of their age— and a reminder of the simpler things in life for those of us who are a little older,” said SDYC Director Alli Bell. “There’s nothing quite like being part of the pilgrimage of more than 100 8-foot boats sailing down the Bay. Anyone near the water that day notices that it brings our sabot community closer and is a good ambassador for the sport.”

Fishing Continues to Benefit Those who Partake

According to data collected by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation for its 2 023 Special Report on Fishing, Americans who fish recreationally share they are experiencing “enjoyment, companionship, and peace of mind on the water.”

In 2022, 54.5 million Americans ages six and over went fishing, an increase of four percent over 2021 and just under 2020’s high of 54.7 million. As mental health awareness becomes more of a focus for Americans, especially adolescents, fishing and boating provide the opportunity for connection, as the report indicates. Last year, only 19 percent of anglers fished alone regularly. Additionally, research showed that eight in ten fishing participants chose to fish in groups of between two and five people.

Those who partake in fishing ranked spending time in nature, escaping everyday stresses, and spending time with family and friends among the top benefits of fishing. The results also showed a comprehensive look at the state of fishing participation in the U.S.:

• 19.8 million women went fishing in 2022, a 40 percent increase over the past decade.

• 4.1 million Americans tried fishing

Eighty-six percent of current fishing participants began fishing before the age of 12, and 23 percent of those considering but not yet partaking in fishing were under the age of 18. These findings underscore the importance of introducing fishing at a young age.

Count Down to the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Fishing Tournament

LOS CABOS — The countdown to the multimillion-dollar tournament, the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament, has begun. The event takes place from Aug. 1-5, with fishing days taking place from Aug. 2-4. The last day to enter the tournament is Aug. 1.

The base entry fee for the East Cape Tournament is $1,500. That does not include the optional daily jackpots that anglers can choose to enter for an additional cost. This Base Entry covers (1) team and all crew members on board. For this tournament, anglers are targeting tuna, Dorado, and black or blue marlin.

“We are looking to have 100 boats or more for this year’s tournament in August,” said Director of Business Relations Jordyn Bisbee in an email to the Log “East Cape seems to grow each year!”

The first Bisbee’s Tournament was in 1981 and was created by Bob Bisbee, with an original purse of $10,000 and six teams. Now, Bisbee’s Offshore Fishing Tournaments host three- multimillion-dollar yearly tournaments: Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore, Los Cabos Offshore, and the infamous Black and Blue. These tournaments draw the best participants in the world from all over the United

States and over 15 countries worldwide.

In 2000 Bisbee expanded the Bisbee’s to the east side of the Baja California Sur peninsula with the East Cape Offshore Tournament in Buenavista. The Tournament is on the east side of the Baja California Sur peninsula and is held at the Buena Vistas Resort the first week of August annually. This tournament became so popular that a third event with the same format was started in 2002 –the aforementioned Los Cabos Offshore Tournament.

BLUEFIN TUNA AND YELLOWFIN TUNA BITES SURGE WITH THE WARMING WATER!

• To date, the 2023 Southern California fishing season has had cooler water than in recent years, but the past week has seen water temperatures increase to where there are currently areas with water temperatures that are as warm as 71.5 degrees.

• What has been exciting for offshore anglers is that the recent warming of the water has been accompanied by an increase in the numbers of yellowfin tuna biting offshore and has also coincided with a few dorado arriving in offshore waters. Coastal and island anglers have also enjoyed improved fishing for some of the near-shore species in step with the warming of the water.

• In offshore waters the good fishing for bluefin tuna continues and there is now a chance at more variety in a day of offshore fishing with the increase in yellowfin tuna and dorado activity.

• There are two main areas that are producing most of the tuna. The more northern sector is producing good catches of what are mostly 40 to 180-plus pound bluefin tuna and

an occasional yellowfin tuna in spots ranging from the deep water outside of the back side of Catalina, out to the waters above the West End of San Clemente Island and from that area on up to the Osborn Bank. Specific productive spots within that zone have been the 499 Spot, Snail Bank, the deep water outside of the Farnsworth Bank, the area to the southwest of the West End of Catalina, the area to the east of the Osborn Bank and the area out to the west-northwest of the West End of San Clemente Island. A recent 2 day trip aboard Condor out of Fisherman’s Landing saw 31 anglers catch 65 bluefin tuna that ranged in size to 183 pounds.

• The more southern bluefin sector is producing good numbers of 20 to 40 pound bluefin along with a few bigger bluefin to 100-plus pounds. This area is also producing good numbers of 15 to 40 pound yellowfin tuna along with an occasional dorado. Productive areas in the southern sector have been around some of the offshore banks below and outside of Los Coronado Islands such as the 371 Bank, 425 Bank, 101 Spot and 475 Knuckle. The area around and about the 425 Bank has been the best in recent days.

• Bluefin have been biting both day and night with the night time hours often providing the best fishing. Flylined sardines, sinker rigged sardines, kite fished flying fish, knife jigs, trolled Nomad Madmac jigs and slow trolled sardines have been productive for bluefin. Yellowfin have been biting on sardines fished around kelp paddies, porpoise schools, bluefin stops, yellowfin trolling stops and spots of working tern birds. Cedar plugs have been reported to be working well on the troll for the yellowfin. Most of the dorado activity has been found around kelp paddies and the few dorado that have been hooked have been caught on sardines.

• The recent warming of the water has seemingly lit a fire under the surface fishing at Los Coronado Islands with very good mixed bag fishing being reported for yellowtail, barracuda, calico bass and assortment of bottom fish species. Mission Belle out of Point Loma Sportfishing fished a recent trip to Los Coronado Islands and had 26 anglers on a full day trip catch 27 yellowtail, 70 barracuda, 40 whitefish, 17 sculpin, 12 rockfish, 9 calico bass and 2 lingcod.

• The Middle Grounds, Pukey Point and the north end of South Island have been the best areas for the surface fishing around Los Coronado Islands with the South

Kelp, Rockpile and the Lighthouse at the south tip of South Island also producing some surface fishing action.

• Sardines and surface iron have been working well for barracuda and yellowtail with yo-yo iron also being worth a try for the deeper water yellows off North Island.
